Salimar Ceviche Bar

A Unique Peruvian Find in Oakland Park

On a Thursday evening, I arrived at Salimar Ceviche Bar on Oakland Park Blvd., ready to explore some Peruvian dishes. I brought along my sister, Sheri, who is Vegan, but will occasionally eat fish. I knew her pescatarian side would appreciate a place that specializes in ceviche and has a variety of seafood dishes.

Upon entering the restaurant, there is a nice, upscale, yet casual vibe. The dining room is decorated with cheerful bright colors and has comfortable seating.

When we walked in, we were greeted by Dali, who was very warm and friendly and showed us to our seats. She immediately explained the Peruvian history of the chef/owners – who are two Peruvian brothers –and the restaurant and handed us menus with such beautiful pictures, I wanted to try it all!

We each started with a Peruvian signature drink of Chicha Morada, a refreshing purple corn drink flavored with cloves. We also tried a taste of the Chicha De Jora, at my sister's insistence, because she read that it was a favorite of Inca royalty. The brown drink was a little sweet and a little sour.

For those who like a drink with their meal, Salimar serves beer and sangria.

20 | HotspotsMagazine.com

We were also served a snack bowl of salted dried Peruvian corn kernels.

Our food experience started with an appetizer of Papa A La Huancaina ($9.95), which are sliced, steamed potatoes covered with a “Magic Sauce” of cheeses and yellow pepper (aji amarillo). The sauce was very good and creamy and complimented the potatoes very well. The presentation was beautiful!

Being that “Ceviche Bar” was the name of the restaurant, I had to try it. We had the Ceviche De Pescado/Mixto ($18.95), which is fresh fish filets cut in cubes, marinated with limes, red onion, and Peruvian peppers. It was served with traditional corn, cancha, and sweet potato. The Flavor was excellent and had a nice mild spiciness to it! I was hesitant to share, but being the big brother, I did. The ceviche dishes start at $16.95.

Next, we planned our main courses.

Sheri wanted to change out beef for fish in her dish and the restaurant was very accommodating in making the change. Dali said that they have no problem with substitutions.

Sheri ordered the Lomo Saltado ($19.95), but instead of the traditional

beef, the chef substituted fish flambé with pisco on the wok and served it with reduction of Asian sauces, onion, tomato, cilantro, yellow pepper, served over crispy French fries and white rice.

I had the meat, of course, a ribeye grilled with a green Peruvian-style creamy paste of spinach, basil, cheese from Huarochiri. I accompanied it with sweet plantains and a salad ($25.95).

To top off the night, we split the Mousse de Lúcuma and I had a café con leche.

Overall, the presentation of all the food was beautiful and the service was excellent! The staff makes you feel like family, welcoming you into their home to enjoy their delicious food!

Why is Self-Care so Important & Innovations

This being the men's Self-Care issue, we thought it appropriate to sit down with some of our advertisers and ask them their thoughts on Men's Self-Care.

Self-Care Edition 32 | HotspotsMagazine.com

Why do you think Men's Self-Care is so important?

Promoting men's self-care is crucial to overall health and wellbeing. Often overlooked, self-care encompasses more than just physical health—it embraces mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness. Embracing self-care routines, such as skin care, nutrition, fitness, and mental health practices, is not just about aesthetics but also a commitment to longevity and disease prevention.

This comprehensive approach aligns seamlessly with functional medicine's philosophy of understanding the body as a complex, interrelated system. Aesthetic procedures boost confidence. Along with them, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can prevent chronic diseases, manage stress, and enhance productivity. Men's self-care is not a luxury but a necessity for a balanced and fulfilling life. Men's selfcare is an essential aspect of living fully and healthily, supporting a life of vitality, productivity, and sustained wellbeing. What's the newest innovation in your field for Men's Self-Care?

Regenerative Aesthetics is the newest innovation in men's self-care. Regenerative Aesthetics represents an advanced branch of medicine that merges aesthetic treatments with regenerative medicine's principles. This

discipline focuses on stimulating the body's natural heali ng processes to enhance and restore physical appearance. The approach utilizes biologically active substances, such as stem cells, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and growth factors, that are either derived from the patient's own body or biocompatible sources.

Rather than relying on synthetic fillers or surgical interventions, regenerative aesthetics addresses signs of aging or damage by boosting the body's inherent capacity for repair and renewal. This approach can be applied to a range of concerns from skin rejuvenation, hair restoration, to overall body contouring. Regenerative aesthetics signifies a promising advance in the field of men's self-care, providing natural, sustainable, and potentially longer-lasting results, thus exemplifying a shift towards a more holistic approach in the pursuit of beauty and health.

Jose: Why do you think Men's Self-Care so important? Well, it's all about taking care of yourself, inside and

out. We're living in a fast-paced world, dealing with stress, work, and all that jazz. Self-care is about looking after your mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Dr.

Why do you think Men's Self-Care is so important?

Men's Self-Care is critical as we age. Many times, the tendency is to put ourselves last by nature focusing on caring for others, especially partners or family members as they age. I see this all the time in my clinic when couples and caregivers come into the office and share that they have been dealing with their family, or their spouse or significant others. The story goes the same consistently that they've been dealing with an delaying addressing their skin health whether it is a lesion that has been changing and results in being a skin cancer that was neglected, or uncontrolled inflammatory skin diseases like eczema or psoriasis that allows for staph and other bacterial infections, or simply not having a cosmetic enhancement procedure that will provide mental nurturing and resolve restoring their ability to care for others. It is so important for us to understand and embrace what science has documented in numerous studies: what you say about what and who you see when you look in the

mirror truly impacts the rate at which you age and your overall well-being.

What's the newest innovation in your field for Men's Self-Care?

This is one of my favorite questions to address as there is a technology available that is patented called high frequency electromagnetic stimulation (HIFEM). Essentially studies have shown using patented BTL Aesthetic platforms such as EmsculptNeo, Emsella, and Emface can stimulate stem cells in muscle fibers to permanently differentiate into functional muscle mass! This is huge when you take into consideration what happens as we age. Aging results in a loss of muscle mass and resting tone. This is detrimental to your health as studies show that your vitality is directly correlated to muscle mass as you age. Many people are unable to use performance-enhancing supplements or have mobility issues preventing them from a regular gym routine. With these

technologies we can increase muscle mass in 12 muscles regions in the human body adding 25% more muscle mass that can result in improved tone, greater agility, stability preventing falls, and reduced nighttime urination and incontinence that can occur as we age. We can treat biceps, triceps, anterior and lateral abdominal muscles (which improving core tone reduces back pain), circumferential thigh muscles improving gait, calf muscles, the pelvic floor muscles to improve tone to the anus, reduce incontinence and enhance ejaculatory force, and most recently facial muscles allowing for lifting and redraping of the jowls and neck skin. This technology will permanently alter history in that we now have a choice in how much stability we have as we age.

Why do you think Men's Self-Care is so important?

Men are traditionally taught to be stoic and strong when faced with difficult situations, rather than taking the time to practice selfcare. However, this outdated notion of masculinity is doing more harm than good. Self-care is not a luxury – it's a necessity. It gives us the chance to practice positive habits, unwind from stress, and take some time to look after ourselves, there are plenty of simple and affordable ways to practice self-care every day. From getting enough

sleep and eating nutritious meals, to spending quality time with family and friends, these are all forms of self-care that can have a positive impact on our mental and physical wellbeing. By practicing positive self-care habits, we can ensure that we stay healthy and happy in body, mind, and spirit. Taking time out for self-care also gives men a chance to check in with themselves and reconnect with their feelings and values. This can lead to increased feelings of fulfillment, joy, and contentment. We think that self-care for men is essential for their overall health and wellbeing. It can help them feel more energized, better able to cope with stress, improve their mental health and give them a greater sense of purpose.

Self-Care Edition 54 | HotspotsMagazine.com

While other physicians and nurse practitioners perform routine on-label and skin rejuvenation procedures, Dr. Leonard pushes the boundaries of what's possible without surgery – earning him a welldeserved reputation as the man behind some of Miami's most notorious faces.

It was a pleasure to sit down with this issue's cover model, Dr. Leonard Einstein, for this exclusive Hotspots interview.

what you expected?

We opened the doors in 2019 and unfortunately the next year we were hit by Covid. However, after we recovered, I am happy to say we have been very successful, and the practice keeps growing and expanding.

What is your most popular service?

What is super popular is the non-surgical Rhinomodelation (liquid rhinoplasty) which is an alternative to surgical Rhinoplasty. In addition, another popular service is the male enhancement (penis augmentation) with Dermal Fillers. Do you take insurance?

We take insurance for all the primary care needs, but not for the aesthetics. Private and government insurance. We do offer financing for aesthetics procedures.

What is the most rewarding thing about owning You and I?

I can make the best decisions for my patients without having any administrator involved. No bureaucracy or management involved.

Were you always interested in medicine or when did it start?

I have been interested in medicine since I was a teenager, and I always wanted to practice in the medical field since I can remember.

What does the term Med Spa mean?

I want to be clear, although we use the words “Med Spa” in our name, this office is actually a medical facility, and everything that is performed in this facility is carried under physician orders and carried out by board certified nurse practitioners who are highly trained and educated medical professionals. The word “Med Spa” is used as most of those procedures are elective, and it sounds more appealing, but we must not be confused with regular “beauty spas or salon” which are not medical facilities. Also, there is more about aesthetics than looking good. It also makes people feel good, which helps with depression, etc.

What are some of the services that you offer at You and I?

We offer general family medicine and nonsurgical aesthetic dermatology services. How long ago did you open You and I and is it

You work with your life partner, how is that going?

Yes, he is the practice manager. We have been together since I was in college, and we are celebrating our 10-year anniversary in August.

What do you do for fun?

I like the outdoors, yachts, and jet skiing. I also love to work out, play video games and read books.

Describe yourself in 3 words?

Creative, dedicated, and passionate

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I look much younger than my age. What does the future hold for you and for the med spa?

I hope to be doing this for the next 20 years, and I hope the spa gets more technology and gets more services for our patients so they can stay healthy and young without going into surgery. You

Alice in Wonderland, A Musical Cirque Adventure at Arsht Center

July 28th & 29th

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County presents the South Florida premiere of Alice In Wonderland, A Musical Cirque Adventure, a nonverbal spectacle perfect for all ages, for a limited run of two performances on July 28 at 8pm and July 29 at 2pm in the Center's Ziff Ballet Opera House. This summer, fans of the beloved story are invited to follow Alice down the rabbit hole to Wonderland, where she will embark on a series of wild circus adventures! Guests will experience seeing all their favorite characters come to life on stage, including The White Rabbit, The Mad Hatter, The Cheshire Cat, The Blue Caterpillar and The Queen of Hearts, played by acrobats, aerialists, jugglers, dancers and contortionists. The all-star cast has appeared in Cirque du Soleil, films such as The Greatest Showman and TV shows such as “America's Got Talent.”

The cast of Alice In Wonderland, A Musical Cirque Adventure will perform to a live, original score starring LC Powell a multi-Grammy and Emmy winning creative with work spanning two decades of film,

66 | HotspotsMagazine.com

television, recording, and stage, perhaps best known for their extensive vocal arranging and performance on Disney's Phineas and Ferb. Mx. Powell serves as music director and contractor for clients including Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon, Dreamworks, Cartoon Network, Disney and more

Alice In Wonderland, A Musical Cirque Adventure features an original score by Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel Award nominee, Quentin Chiappetta; and an opening poem narration by Vaughan Reilly from the upcoming Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (Lionsgate).

It was a pleasure to sit down with Quentin Chiappetta for this exclusive Hotspots Interview:

Were you always musically inclined or when did you get into music?

Yes, I have always been into music, and I

started playing music when my father bought my mother a piano for her birthday. I immediately took it over and was so good at it and my parents decided to give me lessons and I never stopped from there.

\What was your first paid gig in music?

My first gig in music was out of college when I came to NYC, and I started playing piano for modern dance classes. The director of Alice in Wonderland was a student when I was playing dance classes. Twenty something years later she reminded me.

When did you know music would be your career?

I have done music for theater, television, circus, and many other projects. I never made the specific choice, it just kind of happened. I never really looked back. You are a composer, sound designer and mixer. Do you like one more than the other?

HotspotsMagazine.com | 67
Quentin Chiappetta

I enjoy them all and they kind of all go together. One kind of feeds the other. I enjoy the balance between the two. Other than this project, what has been your favorite score you created?

I have done work for a ton of independent films; one was called “Terrible Children” and that was a very satisfying project. I did the music and the sound, and it created a sonic world to escape into and it was so much fun. What is your favorite Score that you did not create?

It's the one I have not created yet. I would love to create an installation where people can enter into a magical world where they can be transported to another place through music and sound.

What was the process of coming up with the Score for Alice In Wonderland, A Musical Cirque Adventure?

It's a new score and we are still working on it. The story is so open to interpretations there are a lot of different ways to go, so we have had a lot of conversation about stylistic approaches and then I just began to write. This has been such a blessing as I have been given total leeway to try different things. It's been a lot of fun.

What should our readers expect from Alice In Wonderland, A Musical Cirque Adventure?

Cirque performances are always amazing as it's humans doing amazing things. This show tells a story intertwined with the cirque acts. The performers are gorgeous, and I hope everyone thinks the music is beautiful also. It's a whole arc of telling the story of Alice in Wonderland and bringing us down that rabbit hole which I think is great.

Is there anything I haven't asked you that you want to talk about?

Yes, I am excited to be back in Miami and I am excited to be premiering this there. I am blown away by the creativity and artistic scene down there.

Six Simple Tricks to Start Each Day Strong

Provided By Family Features

Pressing snooze, finally waking up frazzled, rushing through the house to leave on time, skipping breakfast – if that sounds like a typical morning for you, creating a new routine to start days on a stronger note may help you feel more refreshed and accomplished.

For many people, easy, breezy mornings may sound like a fantasy. However, instituting these simple tips from the

experts at Buddha Teas – creators of fresh, organic teas with high-quality ingredients to let you explore nature's best qualities –can put you on a fast track toward less frantic beginnings to each day.

Begin a Bedtime Routine

A bright-eyed, bushy-tailed morning actually starts the night before. To help ensure you're getting enough sleep each

Self-Care Edition 92 | HotspotsMagazine.com

night (7 hours or more for adults, according to the National Institutes of Health), make sure you're winding down both physically and mentally before heading to bed. This often means skipping caffeine, turning off devices and avoiding big meals close to bedtime.

Wake Up at the Same Time Each Day

As part of your fixed bedtime routine, try going to sleep and waking up at the same times each day – including weekends. This may help your body create a natural rhythm to make it easier for you to rise in the morning without pressing snooze.

Start with Something You Enjoy

Whether you're a morning person or natural night owl, knowing you'll start the day with something enjoyable can help you dread that ringing alarm clock a little less. For example, a steaming mug of Buddha Teas Turmeric Ginger blend offers a delicious and comforting way to wake up. Turmeric's pungent flavor combined with delightfully sweet ginger warms with every sip to energize your morning.

Meditate and Move

While a meditation session may sound like a quicker way to put you back in bed than get your day going, it can actually be beneficial to harness positive energy first thing. Focus on deep breathing, calm your mind, and slow your heart rate prior to taking on the day's tasks. Once you're mentally motivated, move on to physical preparation with 10-15 minutes of light stretching to energize your body and get your blood flowing.

Strengthen Your Body

Another key aspect to a successful morning includes strengthening yourself physically by eating and drinking foods and beverages that provide immunity-boosting ingredients. Consuming a powerful blend of healing, protecting and preventative herbs can be a productive way to defend your body from free radicals with a beverage like Buddha Teas Echinacea Elderberry, which is packed with organic and plant-based vitamin C, antioxidants, and detoxifying herbs.

Echinacea, used for centuries to heal and protect, is combined with elderberry's high levels of vitamin C, which is essential for growth, development, and reparation of the body.

Eat a Nutritious Breakfast

Everyone knows the common refrain: “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” Yet, many people choose to skip a morning meal or simply run out of time, despite the many benefits of refueling before heading off to work or school. In fact, a nutritious breakfast offers a multitude of health benefits for your body, according to the International Food Information Council Foundation, including a healthier heart, better digestion, stronger bones, and improved metabolism. Plus, making time to eat in the morning can provide the energy you need to tackle your to-do list.

Three Healthy Habits to Protect Your Skin

Provided By Family Features

As the first line of defense against the outside world, skin is the body's largest organ and takes on an important role in maintaining overall health. While products like sunscreen and moisturizer can help skin thrive, healthy skin starts from within where food and beverage choices can play a key role.

One example is grapes: Emerging research suggests consuming grapes may help

protect healthy skin even when exposed to UV light, which is known to be damaging. A study published in the journal “Antioxidants,” in which people consumed 2 1/4 cups of grapes every day for two weeks, showed increased resistance to sunburn and reduced markers of UV damage at the cellular level.

This study reinforced previous and similar findings published in the “Journal

Self-Care Edition

of the American Academy of Dermatology.” Grapes are also a hydrating food with 82% water content; hydration is essential to healthy skin.

TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN, CONSIDER THESE SKIN-FRIENDLY HEALTH TIPS.

Protect Skin While Outdoors

While perhaps an obvious step to some, one of the most direct ways you can protect skin is by applying sunscreen – most experts recommend 30 SPF or higher – before heading outdoors and reapplying every 1-2 hours. Additionally, consider wearing protective clothing, such as a hat large enough to shade your face and neck. If you plan to spend extended time in the sun, opt for a lightweight, long-sleeved shirt and pants for maximum skin coverage.

Fill Your Plate with Healthy, Hydrating Foods

Nutritious foods, including fruits and vegetables, can play an important role in achieving an overall balanced diet with adequate hydration. Enjoying the goodness of fresh or frozen Grapes from California can provide extra hydration and a boost of beneficial antioxidants and other polyphenols that help protect the health and function of the body's cells, including those in the skin.

Drink water throughout the day, and for added flavor, infuse with fruits like frozen grapes. Simply rinse, pat dry, remove from the stems and freeze the grapes for 2 hours in a single layer on a sheet pan for flavorful ice cube replacements. For an easy, refreshing way to add grapes to your menu and stay hydrated on warm days, try this Frosty Grape Hibiscus Slush for a subtly sweet, fruity tea in frozen form.

Frosty Grape Hibiscus Slush

Prep time: 15 minutes, plus freezing overnight • Servings: 6 (1 cup each)

9 hibiscus tea bags

6 cups boiling water

3 cups Grapes from California puree (green, red, black or mixture)

4 1/2 tablespoons frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed

1 1/2 tablespoons lime juice (optional)

• Steep tea bags in boiling water. Remove tea bags and stir in grape puree, lemonade concentrate and lime juice, if desired.

• Pour into ice cube trays and freeze overnight until firm.

• In blender, blend until slushy, stirring as needed.

Notes: If no ice cube trays, freeze mixture in large container about 1 1/2 inches deep. Let soften slightly then break into pieces with knife before blending and serving.

Manage Stress

Whether it's caused by a lengthy to-do list or general anxieties, stress can negatively impact skin health while even exacerbating certain conditions. Managing stress can offer a reprieve in multiple ways, including encouraging healthier skin. Some simple ways to relieve stress include exercising, getting enough sleep, lightening or limiting your workload, scaling back on to-do lists and making time for things you enjoy.
