-by Christina Steube

By Christina Steube courtsey of Ole Miss News Desk Over the next few years, several major construction projects will enhance campus life for students, faculty and staff. Here’s a brief look at current and upcoming projects:

HAPPENING NOW Vaught-Hemingway Stadium – Vaught-Hemingway Stadium is getting an upgrade that will completely change its look. The north end zone bleachers are being replaced with a seating bowl, creating a more complete game environment. A brick facade will be added to the exterior of the end zone, creating a more uniform look that matches other campus structures as well as serving as the new gateway to the stadium. The entry will be the new end point for the Walk of Champions. The stadium projects will be completed by September. Residence Halls 2 and 3 (Student Housing Phase II) – The rapid enrollment growth has created a need for more on-campus housing. Two new five-story residence halls will house 624 students at the former site of Guess Hall on Rebel Drive. These buildings are slated to open to students arriving on campus in August. 10

Student Union Addition and Renovation – The Ole Miss Student Union is undergoing a complete renovation. Construction on the first phase began in summer 2015, including the addition of dining areas, a ballroom, support kitchens, a loading dock and a transit center, all scheduled to be completed next summer. The new dining services area will open in the fall of 2017. Track Facility Restoration – The track facility is getting a brand-new surface after storm drainage issues were corrected. The project involves filling, compacting and stabilizing all sub-soils at the facility. After that, the rubber track will be completely replaced. The project is expected to complete in July. North Parking Garage – A new parking structure will be constructed in the north area of campus behind Kinard Hall. The seven-level parking garage will provide 1,300 additional parking spaces. Work began this summer, and the garage is expected to be open in August 2017.

Gillom Women’s Sports Center – The center will undergo interior renovation, which includes new offices, a new volleyball competition area, concessions, a new strength and conditioning facility, a sports medicine suite, ADA upgrades, an elevator, film rooms, spectator restrooms and visitor locker rooms. Work began this summer and will be completed in the summer of 2017.

COMING SOON STEM Building – Ole Miss received a $25 million lead gift from the Gertrude C. Ford Foundation for construction of a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Building in the Science District of campus. The building will provide some 207,000 square feet. Oxford-University Stadium (Swayze Field) – Addition and Renovations Starting this summer, the area behind home plate will be renovated to create a Dugout Club with club seating. A twostory Performance and Operations Center

also will be added. Minor renovations along the third base line and outfield terrace also are planned. This work will be done in phases and completed before the 2018 season. University Avenue Bridge – The University Avenue bridge near Old Taylor Road will be renovated to increase load capacity. During construction, the bridge will remain open to pedestrian traffic and some traffic lanes will be closed periodically throughout construction, but it will remain passable. Work began this summer. South Campus Recreation Facility and Transportation Hub – The university acquired a 500,000-squarefoot manufacturing plant (old Whirlpool plant) on 68 acres on the southwest edge of campus. Portions of the existing building will be repurposed to provide space for fitness activities, departmental offices, classrooms, food service and a hub for Ole Miss Campus Recreation and the Department of Parking and Transportation.

The Ole Miss Student Union is undergoing a $50 million renovation to add 60,000 square feet of space for dining, ballrooms and offices. Architectural rendering courtesy of Ole Miss News Desk. Download the hottytoddy.com app today!

Ayroeu

Ready?

an evoloution of the Grove

Originally, gathering in The Grove was an informal tailgating get-together while most serious pre-game socializing took place at the fraternity and sorority houses. By the 1950s, the Grove started to become its own pregame tradition.

Automobiles, including RV campers, have been kept out of The Grove since a rainstorm in 1991 that reduced the Grove to a rutted swamp. Today, the 10 acre lawn transforms into a giant sea of red and blue tents, some of which are decked out with anything from chandeliers to satellite television. 18

If there were a conference title for pre-game atmosphere, Ole Miss would surely win each and every year. It would be the longest running dynasty in the history of college football. The Grove is, of course, at the heart of campus. Former University of Mississippi Chancellor Robert Khayat even described it to the New York Times as a “spiritual place” during the week. But on the weekends, it’s the grounds for the state’s No. 1 party. Tailgating at the Grove is an incredible experience. Game day sees the Grove carpeted with about 2,500 pop-up tents, about 100,000 Rebels fans and visitors from other teams, and a form of Southern hospitality that only the Magnolia State can provide. So how does one have a big, Southern-style, Grove-worthy tailgate party with all the fixings while on a budget? Here’s a guide for good ol’ football fun that any Rebels fan can execute.

Keep Up Traditions When it comes to Ole Miss pre-gaming, it’s more of a fancy picnic vibe where many partyers wear collared shirts, blazers and sundresses. It’s less of a backwoods BBQ with raucous fans sporting gaudy

apparel. The Ole Miss version of the tailgate is a gigantic family reunion, where everyone is welcome (even LSU fans). So keep that in mind when headed to the stadium to tailgate.

Food and Drink If you’re watching the game at home and hosting a tailgate party away from the Grove, keep up with the budget-friendly Grove traditions like having your favorite beverage in a red plastic cups. Even the discount beverage variety will work on game day. Your guests will just be happy to be there. For food, skip expensive meat dishes like steaks and pork chops and opt instead for traditional deviled eggs, finger sandwiches, fruit and veggie crudité and a cheese plate. Blame it on the Grove rules, where there are no open flames allowed. This saves on the high price of meat and fixins, making your shindig inexpensive but fancy at the same time. For true Southern style, serve food on silvery trays.

Craft Your Own Decor To show your spirit and pride of Ole Miss (and save money on pricey merchandise), craft your own decorations. Make banners and decorate with cardinal red and navy blue fancy paperwear to show your Rebels love. Much of the décor will be provided by your guests as they wear the team colors with pride, so you don’t have to get crazy with decorations.

Insider Tips If you’re a visitor perusing the Grove or any other tailgating pregame party, there are some freeloading strategies you can use to have the best day ever. Here’s the thing about Ole Miss Hospitality: It’s big and welcoming. With manners beating out bad attitudes, you’ll be able to rub

shoulders with the opposing team’s fans, as strangers are invited into tents, and Rebels fans happily share their goods. The Dish Insider’s Guide highlights a few tailgating strategies to help you become one with your Ole Miss compadres. Be the “extra fun” guy or gal and bring along something no one else has, such as a corn hole game or a portable ping-pong table. And arm yourself with a high-powered misting bottle to cool off during those toasty September Saturdays. No matter if you’re throwing a party or visiting the Grove for the ultimate tailgate, don your finest afternoon attire, put on that welcoming Southern smile and be prepared to make new friends for years to come

by Callie Daniels Bryant The New York Times recently published its interview with Reese Witherspoon, beloved Oscar-winning actress who hails from Nashville, Tennessee. In the interview, Witherspoon talked about her Southern roots by sharing her favorite places to shop and dine. When asked about Southern traditions tin which travelers should participate, Witherspoon said to New York Times: “The Kentucky Derby, for sure. There’s such a pageantry to it with people drinking mint juleps, and women all dressed up and men in their bow ties. Tailgating at the University of Mississippi in Oxford is another must. Football is serious in the South, and people dress up for games. They set up tents for tailgating and serve really good food and use real silverware.”

make it a 3-day weekend getaway If you are coming to Oxford for game day, plan to come a day early and experience all the fun Oxford has to offer.

Double Decker Bus Tour

Shopping in Oxford

“Visit Oxford” hosts tours on the opentop Double Decker bus each Friday before University of Mississippi home football games in the fall. Tours depart at 2 p.m. from Visit Oxford, 415 S. Lamar Blvd. Tour sites include William Faulkner’s Rowan Oak, St. Peter’s Cemetery, the L.Q.C. Lamar House; Cedar Oaks Mansion, the downtown square and historic sites on the Ole Miss campus. Tickets are $5 for children and $10 for adults. Tickets for the one-hour tour and can be purchased at Visit Oxford or by calling (662) 232-2477.

Shopping on the Square is a great way to find some cute game day fashions at places like Miss Behavin’ and Indigo’s. Katherine Beck has a wonderful collection of gifts, while Cat Daddy’s on S. Lamar is the goto spot for souvenir shirts and hats. Beyond the square, Oxford has some really eclectic gift shops and antique malls where you can shop for unique gifts and decor. Sugar Magnolia, Mustard Seed and The Depot Antique Malls have a variety of vendor booths that have everything from artwork to home decor.

Nightlife on the Square

Relax at the Spa

There is no doubt Oxford has some of the best places to eat in Mississippi, but experiencing the Square after dark is when it really comes alive. Thursday nights before games day, several venues host live performances after dining hours.

Oxford has some wonderful day spas to help you relax and take time for yourself. Treat yourself to a mani/pedi at Marie’s Salon. Have a massage at Live Well Therapeutic Massage Center might just help you unwind and enjoy your weekend.

Visit Rowan Oak

Bike The Rail-Trails

Step back into time and experience the quiet place that William Faulkner called home. Noted as one of the most renowned authors in American literature, Faulkner spent most of his time as a writer at Rowan Oak. Walking around the grounds is free to the public, while the home tour is $5. It is well worth the price of admission to capture a glimpse into an era of the past. Rowan Oak is open 10am – 4pm Tuesday through Saturday, and 1pm – 4pm on Sunday. The grounds are free to visit and are open dawn till dusk every day.

The Oxford Depot Trail and the Thacker Mountain Rail-Trail are part of a network of bicycle and pedestrian trails that link the communities within Oxford. The 1-mile Oxford Depot Trail extends from Molly Barr Road to Old Taylor Road. Through a series of bike lanes, sidewalks and roadways. The Oxford Depot Trail connects with the Thacker Mountain RailTrail. Once part of the Mississippi Central Railroad, the 2.79 miles run from Front Street to Thacker Mountain Road and create the Thacker Mountain Rail Trail.

Catch Some Tee Time

Outside of Oxford

Looking to spend some time on the golf course as part of your extended weekend? Oxford offers a variety of golfing options. The Ole Miss Golf course and the Country Club of Oxford both offer 18 hole golf courses while the Links of Oxford has a great 9 hole course if you want to grab a quick match.

If you need a break from the hustle and bustle that game weekend brings to our town, take a ride out to one of the State parks in our area. John W. Kyle State Park and Wall Doxey State Park offer camping, fishing and hiking to outdoor enthusiasts. Both areas offer RV parking and comfortable recreational areas. Puskus Lake Recreation Area features a lake and a 5 mile trail.

Getting around in Oxford after a long night on The Square can be a challenge. While it seems like a great idea to “do it yourself,” be aware that you don’t have to. Oxford offers many forms of transportation, Here are few tips:

Taxis There are about 10 taxi services offered in Oxford, and while prices vary, the ease and convenience is worth the price. Taxi services include Angel Taxi, Rebel Taxi, Oxford Taxi, among a few others. Simply google “list of taxis in Oxford, MS” and a list, along with the number for the taxi service will appear. Prices may vary but are usually about $10 per person. One of the most popular taxi services is Angel taxi. All drivers are screened by Angel Taxi and in addition are screened municipally. Bill La Crosse, brother of the owner of Angel Taxi said that his sister, Sue La Crosse, started the business to help students, hence it’s name “Angel” Taxi. The City Council sets acceptable rates for the taxi services to prevent price-gouging on Ole miss Game day weekends.

Uber Uber has entered the Oxford community for the second time in the past few years. Under a new Mississippi law, Uber is available for the upcoming school year. “Uber approached the city of Oxford a few years ago wanting to become a “vehicle for hire,” but didn’t want to follow the guidelines that have been set on other vehicles for hire in the state according to Oxford Board of Aldermen member Robyn Tannehill of Ward II.”

by Collin Brister and Mia Sims When Oxford police made the announcement that Uber would return on its Facebook page on June 29, it was met with an overwhelming reaction of 601 shares and well over 700 reactions ranging from “likes” to “love” to “wow!” You should be able to access Uber through the Uber app that can be downloaded on your phone. Type your pickup location into the search bar, and an uber should be coming your way! Payments are taken via PayPal or by entering your credit card information

Apartment shuttle There are a few apartment complexes in Oxford that provide free shuttles to and from The Square on weekends for their residents. This option is very convenient for students given the cost efficiency. Who doesn’t love a free ride? Two locations that offer this service are The Hub and Highland Square. Just in case you’re all out of money for transportation. Highland Square offers free shuttles on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and runs from 9 p.m. until an hour after the bars close. The Hub is starting their service on August 2. It will be a free shuttle for weekends and also sporting events

Pedi Cabs Lastly, if you want a unique open air experience, try catching a ride with one of Oxford’s Pedi Cabs. These little peddling cabs are positioned along the square and are willing to take you on a cruise to nearby locations. So, sit back and enjoy the night air.

10 Questions to Ask Your Future Landlord The time to start looking for next year’s housing will be during this school year. 1) What kind of security is available? • Ask your landlord if there are security cameras, security patrol and if the entire property is gated or not. 2) Are pets allowed? • There is usually a special fee if the facility allows pets, and the fee could change depending on how many pets you bring. 3) Is there a bus shuttle near? • Traffic can get heavy in Oxford in the morning times. If you are interested in a facility that is not walking or biking distance to campus, ask your landlord where the nearest bus shuttle is and what bus route runs at that shuttle. 4) Is there shelter for my vehicle? • Some facilities have carports that you can rent to park your car underneath for protection from the weather. 5) What type of amenities are included in my rent? • There are a lot of facilities with different types of amenities in Oxford. Some have gyms, study rooms, pools, golf courses, tennis courts, game rooms and even coffee shops. 6) How much insulation is there between the walls? • Old buildings may not have as much insulation between the walls as newer buildings, therefore, the noise level might be more sensitive in buildings with less insulation between the walls.

7) How far is this facility from campus? • The closer to campus, the higher the price. Apart from price, knowing the distance from campus will give you a better understanding of the travel time to and from campus for classes. Again, this information could alter your transportation decisions to class or the Square. 8) How many parking places are assigned to me? • This is especially important to know in case your parents or other guests visit you. Ask how many guests are allowed to visit you at a time and where they should park. Some facilities assign certain parking places to certain cars and units. 9) Remember to read the fine print of your lease and ask about every deposit you need to provide. • Apart from pet deposits, some facilities require a cleaning deposit. Depending on how clean your place is when you move out could depend on if you get your cleaning deposit back or not. • Look for other fees and ask if utilities are included in your monthly rental price. 10) What is the plan of action in case of an emergency? • It is important to be prepared in case of an emergency, whether it is bad weather, a fire or another type of emergency. Ask your landlord for the emergency plan in case of a disaster or bad weather. Download the hottytoddy.com app today!

CHICKEN-ON-A-STICK An Oxford Tradition

by: Shelby Warner Around 1 a.m. on a Friday night in Oxford, you’ll find some students at a Chevron gas station famously named “Chicken on a Stick.” Located on the four corners where North and South Lamar Boulevards and University Avenue intersect, this gas station is a town favorite for food and beverage purchases before heading to a late night venue. Chicken-on-a-Stick is no ordinary Chevron gas station. After hours, they offer delicious late-night food ranging from hot crispitos, pizza sticks, potato logs, and of course the chicken on a stick. “A chicken-on-a-stick is basically a giant floured, battered, and deep fried chicken tender put on a skewer, which makes it easy to eat while walking,” Ole Miss student Libby Woodbury said. “It’s something you would probably find at a fair, but luckily, we have it available to us every night.” Ole Miss student Waverly Reeves said the crispitos are his weakness. “After I went out Monday night, I found myself eating five of them,” he said. With several friendly workers there to serve you 24 hours-a-day, seven days a week, there is never a bad time to stop by and grab a drink or snack. Fresh chicken, crispitos and pizza sticks are made every day in their kitchen, and the cook doubles the quantities on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday in preparation for the students

who will make their nightly visit on the way home from the bars. Around 1 a.m. on a Thursday or Friday night is when you’ll see a line that has formed out the door of the gas station filled with students craving something hot and deep-fried. With Chicken-on-a-Stick’s target audience stopping by after several hours on the Square, there is always a funny story following this after-hours food joint. Students have been known to create their own specials and have a “usual” order every time they arrive. One of the favorites is called the Schoerke Special that includes a chickenon-a-stick, a pizza stick, and a crispito all served with a side of ranch dressing. While famous for its late night food, many people don’t know that this locally-run gas station also offers plate lunches and catering for your Grove tent, during football season. Chicken-on-a-stick has even been mentioned in a BuzzFeed article naming the best late night food in college towns nationwide. They have been featured in Bon Appétit Magazine twice and on the Travel Channel. Leave it to the small town of Oxford to be known for its delicious gas station food. Chicken-on-a-Stick has been a trademark of Oxford for 30 years and doesn’t plan to change anything about themselves anytime soon.
