COACHES CORNER By Adam Brown

O

le Miss head football coach Matt Luke has Rebel blood that runs deep. The bloodline began with his dad, Tommy Luke, who played defensive back for the Rebels in the 1960s. Luke and his brother Tom grew up listening to their dad's stories of his time on the field. These stories instilled a passion in Luke for Ole Miss football. “That’s my dad's helmet right there (on his table in his office) that he used, and it sat on our bookshelves growing up,” Luke said. “So, for my brother and I, that was a dream of ours.” As Gulfport natives, they both played football growing up. Tom, who is seven years older than Matt, came to Oxford in 1989 to play quarterback for the Rebels. Luke said he played high school football on Friday nights, then the family would make the drive north to see Rebel games on Saturdays. Luke’s dream of playing for the Rebels came to fruition in 1995 when he played center for four seasons. Following his playing career, he served as an assistant student coach at Ole Miss in 1999, assisting the Rebels to an 8-4 mark with regular season wins against Auburn, South Carolina, LSU and Arkansas, as well as a 27-25 triumph over Oklahoma in the Independence Bowl. He graduated in May 2000 with a degree in business administration. 8 | Sign up for Daily Headlines from hottytoddy.com

Matt Luke | Ole Miss Head Football Coach

Luke then spent two years (2000-01) coaching the offensive line at Murray State before returning to his alma mater to coach the Rebel tight ends and offensive line for four seasons (200205). Luke had two other assistant coaching stops at Tennessee and Duke before returning to Ole Miss in 2012. “I got into coaching and my next dream was to be a coach at Ole Miss. And then that came true,” Luke said. “I think very few people get to live their dream and I’m getting a chance to do that. At one point or another, I have been a fan, player, coach and now the head coach. I just know how people feel and I want to put a product on the field that all Ole Miss fans will be proud of.” Luke said the 2017 season opener was emotional for him as interim head coach. The interim tag is off this 2018 season, and he’s ready to hit the ground running. “At the end of last season, the culture of the program was good with an unselfish attitude that the guys are playing for each other,” Luke said.

“The motivation is for the guys to play for the guy next to them. Also, to play the game the way it is supposed to be played.” The momentum after the 31-28 victory over Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl carried the Rebels well into recruitment and the early signing period to produce a Top 30 sign class. “I am proud of these group of young men,” Luke said.

Kermit Davis| Ole Miss Men's Basketball Coach Photo courtesy of Ole Miss Athletics

A new era begins when the men’s basketball season tips off for the Rebels this November with Kermit Davis at the helm. Davis is the 22nd head coach in program history. He replaces former head coach Andy Kennedy who stepped down after 12 seasons. Davis discovered his love for the game of basketball at an early age from his father and coach Kermit Davis Sr. “My dad was a high school basketball coach,” Davis said. “He was a coach at Tupelo High School, and then was an assistant head coach at Mississippi State. I just grew up in it and I knew when I was about five or six years old that I was going to be a basketball coach.”

The Leaksville, Mississippi native went on to play at Mississippi State from 1980-82 and signed to play for legendary coach Jim Hatfield. Davis’ Mississippi ties extend to the junior college ranks with a head coaching stint at Southwest Mississippi, where he amassed a 39-20 record in 1985 and 1986. Before arriving at Middle Tennessee in 2002, Davis spent five seasons as the associate head coach at LSU. With Davis assembling multiple top-five recruiting classes, the Tigers captured the SEC title in 2000 and reached the Sweet 16 for the first time in 13 years. Davis came to Ole Miss after spending 16 seasons as head coach of the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders. He took MTSU into the second round of the National Invitational Tournament against the Louisville Cardinals. After arriving in Oxford and hitting the recruiting trail to sign talent for this upcoming season, Davis joined the Rebel Road Trip to meet fans all over the country. “I have been so impressed by the Ole Miss spirit, fan base and their care for their school,” Davis said. “The transition has been a whirlwind, but I think we have made some progress with our team for five weeks on the floor with a lot of work ahead of us. I think our whole staff has felt a reenergized effort, and it is fun to be right here.” Ole Miss takes to the hardwood November 10 against Western Michigan to open the 2018-2019 season.

Yolett McPhee-McCuin | Ole Miss Women's Basketball Coach | Photo Courtesy of Ole Miss Athletics

The Ole Miss women’s basketball team is under the new direction of Yolett McPhee-McCuin, the ninth head coach in the program’s history. She replaces Matt Insell who led the Rebels for five seasons. McPhee-McCuin started playing basketball on outside courts in Freeport, Bahamas where her dad was a coach and her mom was a principal at the high school she attended. She moved to the United States to play collegebasketball for the University of Rhode Island. “I have been around educators my whole life," McPhee-McCuin said. “My college coach said I need to get into coaching.” McPhee-McCuin’s coaching career began in 2005 at Frank Phillips College in Texas as an assistant coach with stops at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Portland, Pittsburgh, and Clemson. “I started at the bottom, worked my way up the whole time and just continued the grind,” McPhee-McCuin said. Before arriving in Oxford on April 4, McPhee-McCuin spent the previous five seasons transforming Jacksonville University into a perennial power in the Atlantic Sun Conference. During her tenure as head coach, McPhee-McCuin led the Dolphins to a 94-63 record (5024 in ASUN play).

McPhee-McCuin was the first Bahamian woman to sign a Division I letter of intent to play basketball, becoming a trailblazer in the process for other aspiring athletes from her home country. She is the first Bahamian woman to coach at a Division I program and was the first black female head coach at Jacksonville before becoming the first black female head coach in Ole Miss women's basketball history. She is also part of two Halls of Fame from both her playing and coaching careers. In 2016, McPhee-McCuin was inducted into the Bahamian Athletic Hall of Fame alongside Buddy Hield (of the NBA's Sacramento Kings) and Jonquel Jones (of the WNBA's Connecticut Sun). In 2013, she was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame and was one of 10 recipients of the Pathfinder Award for their distinguished achievement outside of New England. Th is offseason, McPhee-McCuin, and her staff have been hot on the recruiting trail to replace eight spots from last year’s squad. They have brought in some new faces to play for the Rebels this season. “We will have a full roster of players,” McPhee-McCuin said. “We have been going at it pretty hard for the past two months to be able to put a team together.” Away from the court, the city of Oxford has made McPhee-McCuin and her staff feel right at home in the community, she said. She said she intends to bring a competitive product to the court this season with a lot of excitement and hope.

rchive Oxford, a new student living facility, offers brand new, luxury apartments with a community atmosphere. Assistant General Manager Tre Dozier said that the complex is set apart from other Oxford living facilities due to its uniqueness of being the only Archive in the U.S. “We are the only Archive to be built through this ownership,” Dozier said. “[The owners] made sure that Archive didn’t compare and stood out from other properties.” Amenities can be found at almost every apartment complex, but Archive wants to set the stage for customer services and making residents feel like a community, according to Dozier.

“We want [residents] to know that they can come to [Archive staff ] for anything,” he said. “Whether it is for maintenance, classes or just need to vent, we want to have the best customer service.” Dozier said it is also important how the amenities are offered to residents. Archive offers workout classes in their fitness gym, using the jumbotron for different events and eventually a grill and cook-out competition. With superb customer experience and a variety of events using the facilities provided, Archive wants future residents to feel like this student living facility can feel like home for years to come, Dozier said. THINGS TO DO

PNM tips By Cameron Riser

Sorority and fraternity recruitment may seem intimidating, but thankfully, there are members who have stood in your shoes and want to help. While the recruitment processes and chapters vary across the country, there are various pieces of advice that can help every potential new member. We tracked down two Ole Miss students who have braved recruitment to offer their best advice for those going through the process of joining Greek Life.

Sadie Wilson Sophomore Tri Delta (Major: Dietetics and Nutrition)

1. Wear cute, comfy heels or pack band aids. 2. Make a decision for yourself—even if your friends choose differently.

3. Be prepared to answer the same question repeatedly.

4.

Tell them about yourself. The sorority members want to get to know you, so be ready to share your qualities, interests and passions.

5.

Enjoy being a potential new member (PNM) because rush goes by fast.

8. Be honest and don’t try to be someone you are not.

6.

7. Get a good night’s

9.

10. Always be happy

Be open to asking questions about what the sorority is involved in.

Do not mention any houses or if you are affiliated with another sorority.

THINGS TO DO

Harriman Abernathy

Junior Kappa Alpha (Major: Mechanical Engineering)

1.

Wear a dry fit shirt. The heat is nothing to mess with.

2. Be yourself. Don’t be who you think they want you to be. It’s best for everyone if you put your true self on display. Be proud of who you are.

3. Wear comfortable dress shoes, because it makes all the difference. There is a lot of walking.

4. Meet as many people

5. Keep an open mind.

7.

8. Bring a snack. There

as you can. Connections help you out, so don’t be afraid to go out of your comfort zone and be more talkative.

Get to know your rush group. This is a good way to make friends early so you are comfortable throughout the process

The atmosphere varies from house to house.

will be water provided but probably nothing to eat.

6. Focus on the house

you’re currently in. You will be going to 11 houses in one day, so it’s easy to immediately like one house and not the rest.

9.

Ask questions. It will show the guys in the house that you might have an interest in academics or service over partying.

10. Enjoy it. Don’t get too nervous, because it’s just like talking to your friends.

Say yes to the Nest By Cameron Riser

P

icture a cozy home gallery of stylistic stationary cards lining the walls of a show room and bright lettering popping into midair with each gaze around the room. This picturesque scene exists in Nest Paper Studio, located in Oxford.

Kara Giles, entrepreneur and owner of Nest Paper Studio moved to Oxford from Memphis to obtain her master’s in art education at the University of Mississippi. “I have always been passionate about art from an early age,” she said.

The studio is a hometown business with the objective of merging fashion and paper products. Specializing in beautifully unique wedding invitations, save-the-dates, cup designs, birth announcements, party invitations, personalized paper gifts and stationary cards, Nest Paper Studio has a flair for all things paper.

Twelve years ago the stationary store opened on the Square, but Giles said clients contacted her more via mobile. So, in 2016 she closed the storefront and transitioned to a home location.

Her favorite item to sell is Grove cups when Ole Miss football season comes around.

WHERE TO SHOP “I remember one year Ole Miss played Texas, and I came up with a phrase like ‘bigger in Texas, better in the Grove’ she said. “Those sold like crazy.” The mobile business has two links customers can shop from. First is the personalized, more valued price stationary and second is the fun-filled stationary including birthday cards and baby announcements. “I stay super busy,” Giles said. “I wouldn’t like it any other way. I get to work from wherever I am but still be there for my family if needed.” Appointments are encouraged when considering wedding suites, birth announcements, or corporate events. Emailing Giles at kara@ nestpaperstudio.com is the best way to contact her for pricing or availabilities. Giles does consultations with clients, but business is primarily mobile, she said. Nest Paper Studio can be reached on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and the NestPaperStudio.com website.
