What have you loved most about your time at Ole Miss?
FRESHMAN ADVICE COLUMN
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR
Ole Miss
EXPERIENCE
by Abigail Bailey
As I enter my senior year and reflect on my past three years at the University of Mississippi, what I have loved the most is the family. The Ole Miss family. The University of Mississippi is home to so many different people from around the world and having the opportunity to grow as a student alongside so many other great people has truly been a privilege.
– Elam Miller
It takes time to make friends! I was so stressed out the first few weeks about finding my best friends, and luckily I did get to know a handful of girls who ended up being my best college friends. But there were so many others I didn't know until sophomore or junior year.
– Savannah Smith
What do you wish you would have known going into freshman year?
If you could go back and do freshman year again, would you do anything different? If so, what?
There were some instances where I hoped a week would be over because I was really busy with school, or I was dreading a meeting that I had to attend and didn't know anyone else going. I learned overtime to appreciate every moment and look for the good in everything. At the time, I wish I had appreciated how beautiful campus looks at midnight walking back from the library. I wish I had appreciated those new people I met because I put myself in a different setting. Time at Ole Miss goes by so quickly, and there is so much joy and beauty in everything. It is crucial to open your eyes and be grateful for every moment.

What was your favorite campus organization that you were involved in during your time at Ole Miss?
From Textbooks to Grove Gear We have everything you need
The Big Event has been my favorite organization on campus since my first year. Being able to give back to the community that gives us so much is one of the most special things in my heart. Each year, the town of Oxford welcomes thousands of students from all over with open arms to Ole Miss and the Oxford Community. The Big Event is a great way to say thank you by volunteering to help out with projects around the city and greater Lafayette area–
Mikhail Love WE PRICE MATCH TEXTBOOKS!
I learned that it is ok to not do what everyone else is doing. College is your four years and you get to do your own thing. After I got that, I was much more comfortable in my own skin and felt free to be and do exactly what I wanted to.
– Savannah Smith

What’s your advice on maintaining good grades freshman year (and throughout college)?
My advice for maintaining good grades would be to go to class, try your hardest on every assignment, and get to know your professors. Going to class is crucial. Teachers give most of the information, extra credit, and test assistance during class. Every assignment, even a small homework grade, will help. Getting to know your professors will help them want to help you. The more you meet with your professors and show interest in the course, the more they will show interest in watching you succeed and helping you get there. Work your hardest, so that when you get to the final you know you've done everything you can do to get your grade. Most importantly, get sufficient sleep. No one can do well on a test when they haven't slept.
Success starts here !

F
inding a place to grab a bite to eat can be challenging for freshmen on campus. Luckily, Ole Miss offers a variety of places for students to choose from including places in the Ole Miss Student Union, The Pavilion and the Johnson Commons. Although the Student Union is under construction, its reopening is slated for January 2019. Students currently have access to the dining hall in the union, which includes McAlister’s Deli, Qdoba and Chick-fi l-A. According to Bradley Baker, director of the Ole Miss Student Union, the renovations will include a new and extended student lounge, dedicated student organization space, new administrative offices and the Center for Inclusion and Cross Cultural Engagement. “The renovation also includes a chamber room with theater-style seating as well as eight meetings rooms of various sizes ranging from 400 square feet to 2,540 square feet,” Baker stated.

WHERE TO STAY
WHERE TO STAY Neutral palettes are your best friend. Most of the dorms on campus have beige or beige-toned walls. Sticking to a simple, neutral color scheme will help you avoid having a room that seems cold or clashes with your walls. Keep it cozy. Using lamps or string lights will not only warm up a room, but it will make it feel more inviting than the glaring overhead lights that come with every dorm.
Dorm
SWEET
Tip: Placing your bed on risers will add a little drama and a lot of extra storage. Custom bedskirts are also a must.
Dorm
Add antique ďŹ nishes. Bringing in a few nonconventional pieces like this one not only adds texture to a room, but also makes it unique.
Create dimension. Mirrors always help a room appear bigger (it helps if they are cute). Clear chairs like these provide seating without looking cluttered.
HOW TO TRANSFORM A CINDER BLOCK CELL DORM ROOM INTO A PLACE TO CALL HOME
Tip: Clark Jewelry & Interiors has a great selection of lamps and room decor.

How Ole Miss student Bella Gonzalez launched her planner and stationary company, Lala Letter By Savannah Woods
I
nside Meek Hall, Ole Miss’ art department and the oldest building without renovations on the Oxford campus, fifth-year student Bella Gonzalez bops around to ’80s tunes oozing from the stereo, riding on the buzz from the air conditioners that line the wall of thin glass windows where her studio is housed. She pulls month-emblazoned paper dividers and earth-colored filler paper out of a closet, spreads them out on a paintsplattered art table and crunches them in a massive hole-punch machine to make one of her signature Lala Letter planners.

Lala Letter, a shining, new stationary line, made its debut with this signature planner this past spring, but the idea was born in summer 2016. It was Gonzalez’ favorite day of the year – the day she bought a new planner for the upcoming school year. She clicked and browsed, but a wave of disappointment swallowed her when she couldn’t find a planner that fit all her needs. She rallied and resurfaced with the “overwhelming urge” to make her own. “I thought to myself, ‘Bella, this is what you know how to do. You’re a graphic designer, you know how to market it. Just make your own!’” Gonzalez said. “It was that day that I knew I would make a planner, but it was when I had to come up with a project for my BFA thesis that it came to life.”
Gonzalez’ thesis, a final project required to graduate with a bachelor of fine arts degree, needed an exhibition of products that included the Lala Letter planner, Lala listers, pens, greeting cards and other earthtoned stationary and paper products. She combined her BFA thesis with her honors thesis by creating a business plan and officially launched Lala Letter into business orbit.
The Sales In preparation for her
exhibition in April, Gonzalez handmade 50 planners and sold all 50 before she defended her thesis. The next round of sales is set to launch at the end of May and will be limited to 500 planners. A portion of the sales will go to conservation programs.
“If this is going to be successful, I want other things to be successful, and people are going to buy things they believe in,” Gonzalez said. “I believe every dollar that’s made here should benefit something; so this year, five percent of proceeds are going to nature and ocean preservation.” Nature is where Lala Letter affectionately draws the names for the colors of its products – ocean, cotton and rust. The colors may change from year to year to coincide with whatever cause Lala Letter chooses to support, making each item produced a limited edition. “Whatever the cause may be, I want it to be a cause that I believe in and that my

WHERE TO SHOP customers believe in,” she said. “That way, I’ll constantly stay up-to-date with those that I’m servicing.”
The Inspiration Derived from the last letters of her name, Bella said her most prominent desire for Lala Letter is to empower women by inspiring them to internalize the idea of being a “girl boss” – a term coined by Sophie Amoruso, founder of Nasty Gal Fashion. From the organization of the planner to the witty quotes inside, it was all crafted by talking and sending out surveys to hundreds of girls about what they needed in a planner. “My biggest inspiration is the women around me, and I went to those women for every single thing,” Gonzalez said. “I’d see a girl pull out a planner in a coffee shop, and I’d walk over and be like, ‘Can I ask you about that planner?’ And they’d look at me like, ‘Who are you?’”
She learned to assert herself, though, and to defend her ability to produce her vision with confidence and tenacity. And that energy – that Gonzalez hopes will osmosis to those who use her products – has been driving Lala Letter. “I want to show people, ‘Yeah, I have a good product, but there is a girl behind this product who will stop at nothing,’” Gonzalez said with a smile. “I just think that millennial women are some of the most amazing and world-changing individuals, and I am so proud to be a part of that group.” To buy a Lala Letter planner or to see other products, visit LalaLetter.com.
She laughed and added, “This is a conglomeration of 250 different girls’ problems with their planners… and a way for me to solve it.” Gonzalez said it’s been difficult to be taken seriously as a woman in the printing industry, and she has often times been “written off.” “It was hard sometimes to be taken seriously as a young, stereotypical sororitylooking girl, walking into a print shop like, ‘Hey, can you print me 100 planners,’” she said as she imitated those she encountered, waving her hands and rolling her eyes. “They were like, ‘Uh, you can’t afford that,’ or ‘you should go to this other little website.”
OXFORD, MISSISSIPPI

their personalized care plan. We welcome residents’ families to visit and stay involved in the care program. With this approach, your loved ones specific needs are attended to more effectively than at other communities or in a private home setting. EO: How do potential clients know that the facility would be a good fit? Blake: We encourage each of our potential residents to come in for a visit and stay for an activity or to join us for lunch in our dining room. Th is gives them a good sense of what a day in the life of our community would be like for them. We realize this is a very difficult decision for senior adults and their families and we understand this. We want to make this move as easy as possible for them. EO: You have evolved an outstanding reputation for the cuisine. How so? Blake: Our culinary team realizes that food connects us in many ways and truly wants dining to be one of the highlights each day. Each day we offer a homemade feature designed around the preference of our residents. Residents may also order from the a‘ la Carte menu. We are proud of our wide range breakfast offerings such as Belgian waffles,
Blake: We offer several different types of social opportunities for our residents. We have activities that we do each and every week – such as our daily exercise classes, leisure rides around town, bible study, our social hours, and shopping trips. We also have live entertainment in both our communities and we go outside the community as well. Our residents enjoy attending productions at the Ford Center on campus; they love going to the Grill at 1810 and other restaurants around town. If the residents want to go, we will do our very best to make it happen! EO: If I have a loved one in need of assisted living, how can I best communicate with The Blake to get all of the pertinent information? Blake: Everyone is welcome to stop by anytime for a tour and gather information. They can call our main number (662) 234-5050 and speak with Lori Hannah, our Director of Sales or they can go online to our Web site for more detailed information – www.blakeliving. com - where they can request additional information and Lori Hannah will contact them immediately. EO: Is there currently a waiting list? Blake: We do have a waiting list for certain style apartments, but we have a very limited amount of other apartments styles available– please call us before we do have a waiting list. EO: Do you have 24/7 nurses on duty? Blake: We do have nurses on site in our
memory care and assisted living communities 24/7 as well as personal attendants to assist our residents. EO: What is your policy on visiting? Blake: The Blake at Oxford is home to all of our residents and we encourage their families and friends to come and see them just like they always have. We have residents with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc. come and stay overnight and we even have granddogs that come and visit too! For security purposes, we lock our doors at 7:00 p.m., but our residents and their family members all have a code to gain entrance into the community after hours and visitors can use the outside intercom for assistance to enter the community. EO: Tell our readers why The Blake is superior to competing properties. Blake: We expect a higher quality of care at The Blake. Visit our community and you will immediately experience the difference. Our care philosophy puts a high priority on hospitality and personal attention for both residents and family. That personalized approach is intentional and its part of what separates your experience at The Blake. EO: Are there any unusual rules or regulations that the public should be aware? Blake: Some people don’t realize that to move into any assisted living or memory care community in the state of MS you must meet MS Department of Health criteria. People often feel like they need more care and that they need to go to a skilled facility. That is usually not the case – as long as they meet move in criteria, we are able to provide the care that they need. We encourage people to research all their options before they make the decision of which type of care they need – assisted living or skilled nursing. EO: If we took a survey of your current residents, what 3-4 things would be atop their list that they enjoy most? Blake: 1. They like the security of having help when needed. 2. They are able to leave their worries behind. 3. They enjoy the fellowship of other senior adults. 4. Excursions or trips are made easy and fun!
