Very Superstitious X X X
Ole Miss Game Day Superstitions Are A Part of Life for Rebel Fans By Sam Dethrow
T
he sun is beginning to rise on a crisp fall Saturday. Elvis Presley’s “An American Trilogy” is barely audible as a silver pickup truck makes its way to the drop-off area. Grass glistening with the morning dew, a sea of red and blue tents and trash cans seem to cover everything in sight. Several first-year Ole Miss students are seen riding in the back of a truck and sitting on coolers. This is no ordinary day; today is game day. Game Day brings a special feeling in the air. Dates are marked on calendars months in advance. The institution of higher learning transforms overnight into a mecca for fans. Down South, a fall Saturday is sometimes just as important as church on Sunday. Fans often dress in their Sunday best and spend considerable time preparing for tailgating and other game day activities. 8 | Sign up for Daily Headlines from hottytoddy.com
People who love their team the most are notorious for having peculiar ways of going about business on game day. These are the superstitious fans who believe their actions or anything around them directly affects the outcome of the game. Ole Miss boasts a fan base that famously adheres to tradition. With every anxiously-anticipated athletic season comes a new fan superstition that the fan truly believes is the reason for his team’s not being more successful the year before. Grayson Weir, a senior at Ole Miss, has worn the same pair of underwear to every game since the 2014 Alabama game. The Rebels upset Alabama and earned a third place ranking in the country. Weir believes that should he not wear that same underwear a loss by Ole Miss would be his fault, a belief that started with the Rebel loss in the 2014 Peach Bowl.
Looking back, Weir said, “That (Ole Miss-Alabama game) was one of my favorite days being a Rebel.” Who could blame him? College GameDay aired from the campus; Katy Perry brought fire to the show and stands and Ole Miss upset Alabama. However, Weir admits to not wearing the same pair of underwear at the Peach Bowl, where Ole Miss was devastated by TCU 42-3. This was when he vowed to never attend another game unless he was wearing the same pair. In spite of the fact Ole Miss has not yet won another national championship, he remains optimistic.
Elizabeth Perkins, a 1993 Ole Miss graduate, insists her family’s Grove tent be in the exact same spot every year. She remembers an “incident” in 2016 that did not allow her tent to be placed in its normal place; Ole Miss lost to Alabama, thus missing the highly-coveted “three-peat” defeat of the SEC team. Perkins recalls being nervous about the Rebels as the day progressed. Her nerves proved to be a good forecast. In spite of quarterback Chad Kelly’s throwing for more than 425 yards, the Rebels lost 48-43. Then head coach Hugh Freeze attributed the loss to a lackluster third quarter performance. Visit hottytoddy.com for news, arts, sports and fun! |
9
However, Perkins felt the loss was her fault. She dramatically explained, “The third quarter would have been better…if our tent had been in our spot. This tent will remain in our spot for every game day from now on.” Some feel these fans are crazy; some say these superstitions help make game day is the experience it is. And there are many stories beyond underwear and Grove spots. Harris Jones has been going to Ole Miss games since he was a child. “The superstitious fans help to promote a serious atmosphere in a humorous way,” he said. In other words, the “normal” fan base depends on these superstitions believers to represent the overall fan base and dictate the expectations of the fans as a whole. While not every Rebel fan has a superstition, some have been swayed into believing the magic. Weir and Perkins both hope that with a little Matt Luke magic, mixed with a few superstitions, the Rebels will make it to the College Football Playoff in 2019. The 2018 season will kick off Sept. 1 in Houston vs. Texas Tech. What will your game day preparation look like?

Tailgating Taylor Grocery The “South’s Best Catfish” Tailgating Menu is Now Available for Home Games

F
year, and as much as we appreciate their business and commitment to Taylor Grocery Special Events Catering,” Stewart said. “We are thankful we can help them out by not having to go through all the physical work to enjoy their favorite foods.”
Taylor Grocery is partnering with the Inn at Ole Miss to provide the new tailgating experience began on Sept. 8 when the Rebels took on the Southern Illinois Salukis.
Customers will need to place their orders by 4 p.m. the Wednesday before a home game. Those orders must be picked up from 120 Alumni Drive (between the Alumni Center and the Inn at Ole Miss) on that Saturday. Pick up times are dependent on the game time.
inger foods, red Solo cups and laughter are always in abundance during Grove football Saturdays. This year, other items can be added to that list — Taylor Grocery’s “The South’s Best Catfish”, chicken tenders, hushpuppies, coleslaw and more.
Taylor Grocery is offering a special tailgating menu with several of their staples available in large portions to complement the tailgating experience. The restaurant may add and remove items as the season progresses, said Briana Stewart with Taylor Grocery’s Special Events Catering. “We have had a large number of customers order food and lug it from their vehicle to the Grove year after 18 | Sign up for Daily Headlines from hottytoddy.com
Stewart said Taylor Grocery is grateful for the abundance of fans in and around Oxford who trust them to make their tailgating experience the best. “As always, customers are welcome to place orders for their private college football events off campus; however, they are not limited to this specialized menu,” she said.

How a Visit to the Magnolia State Can Inspire You By Charlie Adams
O
ne weekend, my three children and I visited my native state of Mississippi for a family reunion. While walking around the Square in my hometown of Oxford, we came across this print below of well known people that are from Mississippi.
It is quite a list. Jimmy Buffett. Elvis Presley. Oprah Winfrey. Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears. All from Mississippi. This week I wanted to share the back story of some of them and a memorable quote from some to inspire you. Author John Grisham got his undergrad in accounting at Mississippi State and law degree at Ole Miss. Squeezing in time to write during his lawyer days, he now has over over 245 million copies of his books, mostly legal thrillers, in print. In the early 90’s, when his success was taking off, I called his publicist and asked to do a phone interview with him for one of my motivational articles. Within five minutes I got a call back and it was Grisham. I have always remembered that… “My mum was never too keen on TV, so we kids all went to the library and got books out. Right from the start, I loved the works of Mark Twain.

WHERE TO STAY Every time I read about Tom Sawyer, I’d go out and do something low-level naughty, just like him.” – John Grisham Oprah Winfrey is from Kosciusko, Mississippi. Her alma mater, Kosciusko High School, is who knocked me and my Lafayette High basketball team out of the State Tournament my senior year. If I ever see her I will be sure to give her grief over that matter. “Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” – Oprah Winfrey The great actor Morgan Freeman grew up in Charleston, Mississippi. On one of the group travel trips I host, he graciously spoke to the group at a restaurant he used to co-own in Clarksdale, MS. He ended his talk with this: “We have a saying down here in Mississippi. ‘Ya’ll come back, you hear?’” “I always tell my kids if you lay down, people will step over you. But if you keep scrambling, if you keep going, someone will always, always give you a hand. Always. But you gotta keep dancing, you gotta keep your feet moving.” – Morgan Freeman Retired football star Jerry Rice grew up in Crawford, Mississippi and was a standout wide receiver for tiny Mississippi Valley State University. He became the greatest wide receiver
in the history of football as a star with the San Francisco. Determined to be the best ever, I once heard him say he did not take one vacation during his first ten years in the NFL. One of the reasons his hands became so good at catching the ball was that he was the son of a brick layer. Growing up, he would catch bricks that needed to get high up in houses. “The Enemy of the best is the good. If you’re always settling with what’s good, you’ll never be the best.” – Jerry Rice Singer Faith Hill is from Ridgeland, Mississippi and grew up as an adopted child. Attending an Elvis Presley concert when she was nine made a big impact on her future dreams. “I think beauty comes from within. If you’re happy and look at life in the best way you can, even when there are problems, it can make you beautiful on the outside.” – Faith Hill While in my hometown of Oxford, my kids and I visited Rowan Oak, the home of writer William Faulkner.

WHERE TO STAY Faulkner, who died in 1962, was one of America’s greatest writers, arguably literary history’s most examined and studied author after Shakespeare. I have always been inspired by this part of the speech he gave when he received the Nobel Prize in Stockholm, December 10, 1950 “I decline to accept the end of man. It is easy enough to say that man is immortal simply because he will endure: that when the last dingdong of doom has clanged and faded from the last worthless rock hanging tideless in the last red and dying evening, that even then there will still be one more sound: that of his puny inexhaustible voice, still talking. I refuse to accept this. I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance. The poet’s, the writer’s, duty is to write about these things. It is his privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past. The poet’s voice need not merely be the record of man, it can be one of the props, the pillars to help him endure and prevail.” – William Faulkner Tammy Wynette, the First Lady of Country Music, is from Bounds, 30 | Sign up for Daily Headlines from hottytoddy.com
Mississippi. Her dad died of a brain tumor when she was nine months old. She taught herself to play the musical instruments left to her by her dad, and was raised by relatives. “I had a great childhood, but I thought it was horrible at the time. I was born and raised on a farm in Mississippi. I baled hay, culled corn, did about everything to do on a farm. It was a great childhood. Very simple. I wish my children could see more of the way that I was raised. They never will, but I wish they could.” – Tammy Wynette Elvis is from Tupelo, Mississippi. He is the only artist ever go to in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, The Country Music Hall of Fame, The Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and The Rythem and Blues Hall of Fame. “Animals don’t hate, and we’re supposed to be better than them.” – Elvis Presley Jimmy Buffett is from Pascagoula, Mississippi. When it comes to attitude, he sums it up nicely. “It takes no more time to see the good side of life than it takes to see the bad.” – Jimmy Buffett

Growing a
healthy Grove
By Amy Goodin
F
ootball season at Ole Miss brings with it “Trash Can Fridays,” a sea of red and blue tents, thousands of visitors, the Walk of Champions, and stress on the trees and grounds that make up the Grove. A team of thirty-three full-time staff members works to ensure that the Grove remains healthy and full all year long, but especially during football season. “Before football season we make sure we have a healthy Grove,” said Jeff McManus, Director of Landscape Services. “A healthy Grove always recovers faster than an unhealthy Grove.” The Landscape Services department stays on a perpetual calendar all year long. During each season they have a schedule for what should be done to 56 | Sign up for Daily Headlines from hottytoddy.com
the grounds to keep the Grove and the rest of the campus beautiful. McManus and his team work to reduce any harm that might come to the Grove during this time. “We try to be proactive by putting out trash cans and trash bags,” said McManus. “This way we can minimize the time it takes to clean up the Grove afterwards.” At the end of football season, the Landscape Service Department will clear off the ground in the Grove by raking away anything on or in the ground such as leaves, bottle tops, and cigarette butts. Next, they break up the ground. “We break up the soil compacted by seven weeks of fans,” said McManus. “This way the roots have room to do what roots do, wiggle around

underground and grow. Then we fertilize and get ready for graduation weekend.” McManus has been with the University for over seventeen years. During his tenure, he has completely changed the way landscaping is viewed. He took the anxiety of football season away from the department and made this a time for his team to shine.
the vision and the goal of keeping the campus healthy and beautiful. “Everybody in our department is a leader,” said McManus. “This is not about a paycheck or attention. This is Ole Miss.”
He instills his workers with a sense of ownership so that this is not just a job and everyone on the team shares

In 1978, a woman died of breast cancer, and with her the talents I never knew. She crocheted. She embroidered.
She was my grandmother.
So that history doesn’t repeat itself, it’s important to me to find the right place for annual exams, guidance and treatment if needed. I choose Baptist North Mississippi for their expertise and compassionate care. They stand by their commitment to provide advanced health care for women. Now offering 3D mammography, a screening tool that improves early detection of breast cancer, I’ve found not only the best breast care services, but a place that feels like home.
Call 662-636-4252 to schedule your mammogram
