Lamar Lounge Mach II expands food offerings—with a mission By Michael Harrelson Oxford restaurateur John Currence long ago mastered the recipe for running successful restaurants. Any other foodservice entrepreneur with a restaurant portfolio that included the likes of City Grocery, Bouré, Snackbar and Big Bad Breakfast might be content with doing nothing else but replicating the proprietor/customer formula that has allowed him to prosper and helped to turn the city into a sophisticated restaurant destination. Yet with his newest Lamar Lounge acquisition — branded around the popular and ubiquitous phenom-

enon of Southern barbecue with a capital B — Currence is now bringing the community of Oxford, Ole Miss and Lafayette County to the table as well. Restaurant number five came about serendipitously, Currence says, after the former owner of Lamar Lounge approached him for assistance in running the popular though still fledgling bar and restaurant concept. “I could see immediately that Lamar Lounge was the perfect venture for giving back to the community directly,” Currence says. One big asset it had going for it was the customers who

came in droves and adopted the North Lamar getaway as their favorite hangout after the venue opened last fall. “It is an important segment that we did not reach at Bouré, City Grocery, Big Bad Breakfast or Snackbar,” Currence says. The makeup of the clientele — young, college-age individuals and families with children — and the relatively quick, bar-food footprint of the concept were attractive to Currence for another reason as well.

Giving Back As a supporter of a local advocacy group Good Food for Oxford Schools, he saw immediately the marketing potential of operating Lamar Lounge as a not-for-profit to address food issues and the crying need for better nutrition at local schools — thus bringing the community and the entire state into the value equation with every meal served. “We are the fattest state in the Union,” Currence says. “We want to help propel Mississippi forward in the eyes of the country. I can’t sit idly by on the sidelines while we are being laughed at without picking up the mantle.” The profit margin from sales — say $2 on a $6 sandwich item — will go to designated local organizations such as Good Food for Oxford Schools and other food and nutrition groups working to eliminate fried foods from school lunch programs, promote physical education and introduce fresh local vegetables to school lunch menus. “We are giving back by not taking from,” Currence says. The barbecue will be the chef ’s own unique take on the southern delicacy that varies markedly, from the

simple East Carolina version to Memphis style barbecue with its cole slaw accompaniment and beyond, to the whole different animal of Texas barbecue. “The thing that is interesting is that when you talk about barbecue and regional variations, you can identify the different geographical differences, but try to define Mississippi barbecue, and there is no identity to it. I don’t feel beholden to any location,” Currence says. “My idea is to create the Frankenstein of barbecue, cobbling together the best of each variation that appeals to us.” To do that, the Lamar Lounge’s barbecue will be prepared with a dry rub that Currence recently introduced. And other distinctions will include the use of chili sauce instead of ketchup that Currence says references Mississippi and Memphis traditions at the same time.

Old and New Patrons who were happy with the Lamar Lounge the way it was before will be glad to know Currence has kept items such as the Lamar Burger. Among the additions customers will see are a couple of new plate lunches and a weekly special. “The menu needed a little variety to it,” Currence says. While Currence says the news of Lamar Lounge changing hands left some people scratching their heads, others overjoyed and still others wondering what the angle was, he is confident that patrons will be pleased with the result. “Once folks see what is happening, they will see that it is something they can get behind,” he says. The Hotty Toddy Cheer: Its History and Significance

shout it anytime they get the chance, fans from other schools often wonder what the saying and chant even mean. It’s actually a very good question, so

let’s dig a little deeper into the mythical Hotty Toddy.

The Origins of “Hotty Toddy” While it’s a great question, there’s no definitive answer. The mystery is part of what makes it so unique. One suggested origin story is that it was developed by a Virginia Tech Regimantal Band called the Highty Tighties, which derived “Heighty Tighty” from a cheer used throughout World War II. Others associate Hotty Toddy with the description of a warm alcoholic drink. Actually, as an official Ole Miss reference, the first documented evidence of the phrase (then written as “Heighty! Tighty!”) appeared in a November 19, 1926 copy of the student newspaper, The Mississippian. In the newspaper that day, the following words appeared: Heighty! Tighty! Gosh A Mighty! Who in the h–l are we? Rim! Ram! Flim! Flam! Ole Miss, by D–m Ever since the first print appearance in 1926, the Ole Miss cheer has been passed down from generation to generation of Rebels fans. Today, only the spelling is different than it was in 1926. Most importantly, it’s the answer to “Are You Ready?”.

What’s It Mean Anyway? Outside of being part of the answer to the question “Are You Ready?”, Hotty Toddy is also a way one Ole Miss fan greets another. It’s no different than an Alabama fan saying “Roll Tide” or a Texas A&M fan shouting “Gig’ em Aggies”. ESPN’s Doug Ward wrote,

“Hotty Toddy has no real meaning, but it means everything in Oxford. For students, fans and alumni, it is a greeting, cheer and secret handshake all rolled into one. Hotty Toddy is the spirit of Ole Miss.” He’s spot on, as the cheer embodies the spirit of the school. While it’s commonplace to hear Hotty Toddy in the Grove and at Ole Miss games, what’s special to Rebel fans is how much further the saying extends past athletics. It only takes seeing an Ole Miss logo or design on a shirt, hat, etc., for a fellow Rebel to proudly say, Hotty Toddy. In return, the other person proclaims a warm Hotty Toddy. Some of the random places I’ve received an unsolicited Hotty Toddy include Walt Disney World, Augusta National at the Masters, New York City, the Las Vegas Strip, and even a Target in Auburn, Alabama of all places.

Are You Ready? Sorry, Tiger fans, it’s true. From Roll Tide, to War Eagle, to Hotty Toddy, it’s the seemingly small things that come together as a whole to make the SEC a tradition-rich conference. If you really want to hear the answer to “Are You Ready?” in its full glory, be in the stands at VaughtHemingway Stadium in Oxford five minutes before kickoff. Every home game, immediately before kickoff, a truly “secret” celebrity guest appears on the jumbotron to hype up the crowd and ask, “Are You Ready?” Just hear it from the stands once, and you’ll know the words forever. Hotty Toddy!

Ford Center Knows When to Hold ‘Em October and November bring a variety of entertainment opportunities at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts at Ole Miss. Not the least of them is a performance by award-winning singer, songwriter, producer, photographer, actor, and author Kenny Rogers. The Gambler himself hits the Ford Center stage October 10 at 7 p.m., drawing from a vast repertoire of hits. October 15 brings the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble. Regarded as one of the greatest folkloric dance ensembles in the world, the group performs the traditional folk music and dance of Hungary and Hungarian-inhabited areas. Showtime is 7 p.m. The Ford Center dials up the heat on November 4 at 7p.m. with a presentation of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, one of the most revered novels of the twentieth-century. The production tells the dystopian tale of a bleak future where literature and knowledge are on the edge of extinction.

An Acoustic Evening with Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin on Stage Together is November 10 at 7 p.m. The two acclaimed songwriters and longtime friends share the stage as an intimate duo, performing material spanning their vast catalogues, as well as some of their favorite songs. On November 13 at 7 p.m., “Letters Home” puts the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq front and center by bringing to life actual letters written by soldiers serving in the Middle East. Mississippi Symphony Orchestra with the University of Mississippi Chorus will perform Giuseppe Verdi’s “Verdi’s Requiem,” one of the monumental choral/orchestral works of the Romantic era, on November 17 at 3 p.m. “Verdi’s Requiem” is set in seven movements: Requiem and Kyrie, Dies Irae, Offertorio, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, Lux aeterna, and Libera me. Roast of the Town: Emileigh’s Meaty Makeover By Tad Wilkes Emileigh’s Bakery and Emileigh’s kitchen made a name with housemade cakes, delicious lunches, and much more, but owners John and Linda Fleming believe they can do even better. Their new vision is now open under the name Roasted. “We are taking the restaurant side of what we do, and we are turning it into Roasted Food Company,” explains John Fleming. “Roasted will be a better version of the restaurant than we were before, and we’re going to be heavier on the market side than before, as far as casseroles, chicken salad, pimiento cheese—all kind of quick gourmet items you can grab and go with.” The bakery will still be within the same space, with a bakery case, and customers will order and pick up cakes and pastries there. But the meat of the matter is, well, the meat. “The name ‘Roasted’ is because we’ll have three meats every day: a mojo roasted chicken, jerk roasted pork loin, and a slow-cooked beef brisket,” Fleming explains. “We’ll have six rotating sides every day. What’s special about our meats is they’ll be put in a brine before they are roasted. It is making a huge difference in the taste. The brine locks in the flavors and juices.” Roasted will be open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week for dining, with the market open all day until 7 p.m. The lunch menu will fea-

ture a number of new salads at lunch, including as a no-mayo salad, not previously available in Emileigh’s Kitchen. The layout remains almost the same, but with new furnishings and a refrigerated case to expand the market portion’s offerings. Four or five homemade condiments each day—such as red onion marmalade, sundried tomato jam, and various chutneys—allow guests to customize sandwiches. Q&A With Abner White

Abner’s celebrates 20th anniversary Throughout 2013, Abner’s Famous Chicken Tenders restaurants — now a Mississippi institution — are celebrating 20 years of providing great food and service to our state. Neil White talked with Owner Abner White to get his perspective at the 20-year mark. When you opened your first store, what kind of space did you have and how did you expand? About 600 square feet and five tables— and eight parking spaces that we shared with a gas station and a liquor store. During the second year of operation, I bought the gas station. A year later, I bought the entire building. So, at the age of 25, I purchased an expensive piece of real estate on the corner of University Avenue and South Lamar. It was scary, but it turned out to be a great move. And it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of a young banker named Ben Bolton. He believed in me when I was just starting out. His ability to assess my business and our potential in Oxford has meant a great deal over the years. You’ve adopted Mississippi as home, but your roots are in Alabama, right? Although I received my degree in Business Administration from Ole Miss in 1992, yes, I was raised in Alabama — where Alabama vs. Auburn was this huge game. What I look forward to is seeing the Egg Bowl determine who goes to Atlanta. My hope is that the Egg Bowl will soon become a more mean-

ingful game nationally. That will be a good day for Mississippi and the SEC — and I think it’s coming. My wife and her family are also Oxford natives, so that further strengthens the connection that I feel to Mississippi. Any advice for emerging entrepreneurs or young people? It’s never too late to get your act together. I was always in trouble as a youngster. Not sure if it was undiagnosed ADHD, or me just being a knucklehead, but I simply goofed off in high school. But when I got into college, everything changed. I wasn’t going to let myself fall short again. I got focused. I worked hard in school. Eventually, I was named an Academic All-SEC student athlete, and nominated for Academic All-American. School and sports are similar. For some, God-given talent makes it easy, whether in the classroom or on the field. For the rest of us, it takes hard work, attention and focus. Our media always focuses on the superstars. They overlook the kids on every team who quietly work hard, often unnoticed, but who are vital to the team. Even if I was in over my head at times, I knew no one could out-work me. I want young kids today to know that there are opportunities out there for them. And supreme talent isn’t in the requirements. A little talent and a lot of hard work go a long way. Their dreams are achievable.

In The End Zone: Larry Wells remembers the ‘92 Egg Bowl

As with so many of life’s happy decisions we came to the end zone by chance. Throughout the 1970s, my wife Dean and I had season tickets to the Ole Miss home games as well as those in Memphis. Dean had attended the University of Mississippi as an undergraduate and had been a Rebel fan practically from birth. Her father, Dean Swift Faulkner, youngest brother of William Faulkner, had lettered in baseball at the University in the 1930s and had briefly been a football scrub. In those days we sat on the student side of Vaught-Hemingway. They weren’t great seats but we were happy to have them. Archie’s Army was on the march, and in those heady days I assumed that Ole Miss would always be a contender for the conference title. It was during the Sloan era that we became south end zone regulars. Willie Morris had recently moved to Oxford and had begun his brilliant tenure as the University’s journalist-in-

residence. Ole Miss football had been one of the attractions with which we lured him back from New York. At first our group was small: Willie and Dean and me, occasionally joined by our sons, David Morris and Jon Mallard. Then David Sansing and Ron Borne of the Ole Miss faculty joined us, along with their families. During a Georgia game, Morris was interviewed by both the Bulldog and Rebel radio networks, and the south end zone began to come into its own. In the early ‘80s Barry Hannah moved to Oxford to teach at the University. He and his wife Susan soon became fellow citizens of the end zone. On any given Saturday our number was swelled by movie producers, actors, magazine editors, literary agents and former Rebel players. A colony of writers and artists had sprung up in the end zone. “Where else could this have happened,” Morris asked, “except in a stadium named Hemingway?”

The day of the State game dawned grey and chill. Fortified by determination and other spirits, our little band of Bums and Rowdies took our places behind the goalposts. We were surrounded by Bulldogs. The aluminum bench seats were like ice. Blankets and cushions were absolute necessities. The game began. As if through a single pair of eyes we watched the score seesaw back and forth. At halftime State held a 10-7 advantage. Then the Rebels came from behind in the third quarter and were leading by a touchdown in the fourth.

The Ultimate Test of Manhood Now came a rare sequence of events which Hannah called “the ultimate test of manhood”−11 offensive plays by the Bulldogs from inside the Rebel 10 yard line. Somehow the Rebels held. Defensive tackle Chad Brown saw the opposing guard pulling and shot through to tackle the ball carrier for a loss. Frosh safety Michael Lowery intercepted a pass by State quarterback Todd Jordan. On the next play, however, the Rebels fumbled it back. Susan Hannah was holding up her Haitian mojo with her eyes closed, repeating a mantra: “Stay out of our end zone, stay out of our end zone.” Her prayers were answered when three passes fell incomplete. State was reeling and we, the south endzoners, were rowdy. I was about to light a Cuban cigar when Dean tugged at my sleeve. A pass interference call had given State a first down at the Rebel one yard line. “Four more tries?” we asked each other in stunned horror. Some of the Bulldog fans actually clucked in sympathy.

The end zone can be both heaven and hell. If one doesn’t feel anything, he is either a humanoid or a saint−and in the south end zone of there was neither.

Holding Strong In his grey overcoat Barry Hannah had the stone-like concentration of Rodin’s “The Thinker.” Having lost her voice Dean could only whisper, “De-fense, de-fense!” For an eternity, State and Ole Miss fans watched a goalline stand that Coach Billy Brewer later declared impossible. Four more times the Rebels held−against two thrusts into the line, a quarterback bootleg alertly sniffed out by strong safety Johnny Dixon and All-SEC linebacker Dwayne Dotson, and then, finally, Greg Plump’s desperation pass which State’s receiver almost caught. Like a priest giving final absolution, Ole Miss quarterback Russ Shows took the last snap, knelt to the turf and it was over. Ole Miss had beaten back the Bulldogs’ valiant onslaught and was Liberty Bowl-bound. Of all the things that matter, birth and death and forgiveness and humility and hope and love, what else could have made us weep and laugh and grasp the hands of strangers in red and blue? We were one tribe, one nation, indivisible, with victory and glad tidings for all. I leaned over the end zone railing and thought, “But isn’t football only a game?” And the walls of VaughtHemingway resounded with the celestial voices of Bruiser Kinard, Tad Smith and Merle Hapes, now scrimmaging with the SEC Immortals under Coach Bear Bryant, speaking to bum and emperor alike: Satisfaction is no game. www.hottytoddy.com

In 1848, the Lyceum was the first building constructed on the University of Mississippi campus. It serves as both an academic and administrative center. Bullet holes remain in the columns from the riots when James Meredith became the first African-American to enroll at the University of Mississippi.

AMMADELLE

An 1859 Itallianate villa mansion designed by architect Calvert Vaux located at 637 North Lamar St. Private residence of the Tatum family.

THACKER MOUNTAIN Located South of Oxford off Old Taylor Road, Thacker Mountain is 571-ft above sea level with an abandoned fire tower at the top where one can enjoy the view of Oxford and Lafayette County. Thacker Mountain can be accessed by the Thacker Mountain Trail at the end of Coliseum Dr.

OXFORD CONFERENCE CENTER Over 25,000 sq. ft. of bookable spaces, and can accommodate banquet events for over 650 people located at 102 Ed Perry Blvd.

COLLEGE HILL CHURCH

Built in 1853, the church is surrounded by century old cedar trees, and a cemetery that dates back to the date of construction. The church sanctuary has been maintained essentially original, except for the addition of modern conveniences. The historic church is located just outside Oxford at 339 College Hill Rd.

SWAYZE FIELD

Home of the Ole Miss Rebels Baseball team for 25 years, Swayze Field is one of the finest baseball facilities in the Southeastern Conference. The infamous right field student section is known for all-day tailgates with barbecues.

WILLIAM FAULKNER’S GRAVE William Faulkner is buried in St. Peter’s Cemetery located on 16th St, across from St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church. THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI

The University of Mississippi, best known as Ole Miss, is a public, nationally recognized research university, founded in 1848. The main campus is in Oxford with four branches located in Booneville, Grenada, Tupelo, and Southaven as well as the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

THEORA HAMBLETT HOUSE

Theora Hamblett was a self-taught primitive artist best known for her brilliantly colored tree, dream and vision paintings. Her former residence, now a private home, is located at 619 Van Buren Ave.

WALTON-YOUNG HISTORIC HOUSE

The registered Mississippi Landmark was built in 1880 by Horace H. Walton, who owned a hardware store on the Oxford Square. The typical middle class home of the Victorian era is located at the corner of University Ave and 5th St.

ST. PETERâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S EPISCOPAL CHURCH

The church was built, following the designs of famed 19th century church architect Richard Upjohn, and organized in 1851. The building is the oldest religious structure in Oxford, having survived the burnings during the Civil War. The church is located on South 9th St just off the Square.

Stocked with new and used vinyl records, Oxford’s only record store is located at 1423 North Lamar Blvd. Separated into Rock, Blues, Soul/R&B, Gospel, Jazz, Country and a large collection of 45 singles.

CEDAR OAKS

Built in 1859 by William Turner, Cedar Oaks is a Greek revival structure surviving a tumultuous past. Now used as a rental site for civic clubs, receptions, weddings, and tours. The historic home is located at 601 Murray Dr.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Founded in 1837 by early settlers of Scottish decent, the First Presbyterian Church was build in 1861. The church has been home to many community leaders and three University Chancellors: Waddel, Fulton and Hume. The church is located on Van Buren Ave just off the Oxford Square.

BLUES ARCHIVES

Located in the J.D. Williams Library, sits the world’s most extensive collection of blues recordings, books, periodicals and photographs. Notable collections are The B.B. King Collection, The Kenneth Goldstein Folklore Collection and The Living Blues Archive Collection. The library is located at 1 Library Loop.

THACKER MOUNTAIN RADIO Oxford’s original live radio show features weekly author readings and a wide array of musical performances from around the area. The free show is taped and broadcasted every Thursday at 6 p.m. at Off Square Books.

THE LYRIC

1006 Van Buren Ave has enjoyed a long life since its original construction in the 1800’s as a livery stable once owned by William Faulkner’s family. In the 1920s the stable was converted into a theater and in 2007 the restored Lyric began operating as one of Oxford’s performance centers. The Lyric has hosted some 1200 concerts featuring national artists like Bela Fleck, Modest Mouse and STS9.

GERTRUDE C. FORD CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

Visit the University of Mississippi’s state of the art facility featuring the 88,000 sq. ft. multi-event performance space. The Ford Center seats 1,200 in the main hall and offers dance and ballet studios, conference and office space, and a reception hall. Located at 100 University Ave.

TAYLOR GROCERY AND COMMUNITY

Taylor, as Faulkner put it, is a “postage stamp of native soil” that attracts visitors from around the world looking for Southern food, music, art and the bucolic lifestyle. The town’s centerpiece is Taylor Grocery, where catfish and hushpuppies are menu stables. Located in an old store with walls covered in signatures from visitors, the restaurant is open Th-Sun 5 p.m.-9 p.m.

THE POWERHOUSE COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER

The Powerhouse Community Arts Center is a vintage 1928 warehouse that once housed the Oxford Electric Company, and now operates as the center for Oxfordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Yoknapatawpha Arts Council. Located at 413 North 14th St, the Powerhouse houses a diverse range of events, classes, workshops and community performance space. The facility is also available as a rental for special events.

STUDIO WHIMZY

Studio Whimzy offers acrylic painting and ceramic workshops for adults and children. Studio Whimzy also hosts painting events where participants complete an entire masterpiece using step-by-step instruction in one session. Located at 807 College Hill Rd.

Sardis Lake, located northeast of Oxford, and Enid Lake, located about 40 miles south off I-55, are large flood control lakes maintained by the Corps of Engineers. Puskus Lake is a smaller lake located on Highway 30 West of Oxford.

SOUTHSIDE GALLERY

GOLF IN OXFORD

Oxford has three golf courses: The Country Club of Oxford, The Links and The Ole Miss Golf Course. The Country Club of Oxford, an 18 hole course, is located on Hwy 7 South at Grand Oaks while The Links, a nine hole course, is located on Hwy 6 West at the entrance to The Links apartments. Ole Miss operates an 18-hole championship course located at 147 Golf Club Rd.

Located on Park Dr, Avent Park includes walking trails, four lighted tennis courts, a playground for children, and a lighted pavilion.

PATSY LAMAR PARK

Located at the intersection of Country Club and College Hill Roads, Patsy Lamar Park includes almost four miles of walking trails and Lake Patsy, a small lake where fishing is permitted for children and handicapped individuals.

OXFORD PARK COMMISSION ACTIVITY CENTER

The city of Oxford’s Activity Center located on the corner of Price St and Molly Barr Rd is home to two indoor basketball courts, a gymnastics room and several multipurpose rooms.

FNC PARK

Located on County Rd 100, the park includes 75 acres of state-ofthe-art sports facilities including five soccer fields, eight baseball fields, three softball fields, a BMX track, four concession stands and a trailhead pavilion.

BAILEY’S WOODS TRAILS

Bailey’s Woods Trail links Rowan Oak, William Faulkner’s home, to the University of Mississippi Museum and campus. Stretching approximately 3,000 feet, the trail takes about 20 minutes to walk through. Bikes are not permitted. Stroll through the heavily wooded area as Faulkner once did.

HUMANE SOCIETY DOG PARK

The Oxford-Lafayette County Humane Society operates a facility located on McElroy Dr, just east of the OxfordUniversity Airport. Facilities include a dog park where Oxford residents and visitors are encouraged to exercise their pooches.

OXFORD SKATE PARK

Completed in 2006, the Oxford Skate Park provides a space for BMX, skateboarding and biker entertainment. The park also has a covered pavilion and playground located on Bramlett Blvd, across from the Oxford-Lafayette Public Library.

CLEAR CREEK BIKE TRAILS

The Clear Creek Trail is a 20-minute drive to the Clear Creek boat landing at Sardis Lake. The trail can be ridden as a complete 13-mile loop, a smaller 3-mile beginner loop or an 8-mile beginner/intermediate loop.

LOCAL COLOR

Local Color is the local ‘hippie place’ where one can find a variety of items such as insense, tapestries, tie-dyes and music posters. Stop by and say “Hello” to Willie, Local Color’s owner and resident.
