TailgatingTraditions
The ZebraTent by Steve Vasallo
Experiencing tailgating in the Ole Miss Grove the first time can be a bit overwhelming to say the least. Each home football game, swarms of Rebel fans flock from near and far to the 10 acre plot of land, in the center of the Ole Miss campus, to host parties that are beyond the normal extravagance of a common gathering.
If you have ever ventured out during a tailgating weekend to check out other tents, you have probably noticed the “Zebra Tent” stationed along the coveted Walk of Champions. Several families host the Zebra tent each year including: Lantz and Jane Foster, Suzanne and Ron Camp, Mike Slaughter, Anne Blair, Teresa Hubbard, Katrina Harris, Michelle and Brad Hill, Wilson Harreld, Jo Lynn Michael, Martin and Barbara Mesecke, Ken and Madeline Morris, David and Deanna Berry, Michael and Wendy Tate, John and Erin Noble, Jan Collins, Robert and Angie Ochoa, Bill and Karen Mosby. When asked how their tent came to be know so well in the grove, Jane Foster from Canton, Mississippi said,” We decided to do something different so our friends could find us. So we asked our artist friend Noel Web to paint the tent in a fun way. She decided to do Zebra.”

The Zebra tent has hosted a list of celebrities, such as Tim Tebow’s family and Make-a Wish children, Greg Isles, James Meredith, Brian McFadden, Cliff Stout, Ray Perkins, Sam Ponder, and quite a few former Rebels who are in the NFL now. One of the best moments Mrs. Foster can recall is, “Probably the New York City Fireman that had a bachelor party at the Zebra tent. Their reactions to all the pretty girls kept us entertained.” They began tailgating 14 years ago, and are positioned in a prize location, being six tents deep along the Walk of Champions. They enjoy hosting friends and family and have positioned their space to allow friends to experience “The Walk” from the Ole Miss team hours before each game.
So, the next time you are in town for a game and find yourself wandering the Grove looking for inspiration on how to dress up your borrowed piece of real estate, swing by the Zebra tent and check out their décor. These ladies are inviting and friendly and are full of southern charm.
Each weekend, the ladies of the tent “family” plan and execute a theme to express their creativity and add a twist to entertaining. They start planning months in advance of football season. Foster added that pregame day, ”Our Friday nights are full till midnight preparing, and we start setting up at 6:00 a.m. that morning.”

The Jersey Girls A New Trend In Grove Fashion
By:Abby Bailey
For decades, Ole Miss has been known for over the top tents, beautiful people and formal game day attire. On Saturdays in the fall, the Grove is overflowing with men, women and children of all ages dressed to the nines. Outfits consist of guys in seersucker suits, women in tight dresses paired with fourinch heels and children in their Sunday best.
14
Ole Miss fans have always had a flair for straight-forward fashion, never being afraid to over-dress or try new trends. Over the past few years, a new trend has emerged in Oxford, Mississippi: the football jersey. While the male Ole Miss fans have always worn football jerseys, paired with khakis and dress shoes, women have taken this outfit choice to another level.

For female Rebel fans, jerseys are styled in many different ways on game day. Jerseys can be worn tucked into skirts, shorts or pants, and many wear them as dresses. In order to give the outfit a trendy, formal look, the jerseys are paired with high heels, boots or booties. The addition of bulky necklaces, big earrings and lots of bracelets creates a more fashion forward look for the jersey style. Somehow these boxy articles of clothing that were meant for guys have been modified to become a must have piece in an Ole Miss girl’s closet.
So, as you prepare your outfit for the biggest college football game of the weekend, you can choose the traditional Grove attire or decide to sport your own version of the Ole Miss jersey trend. This just might become your lucky game day attire!

While most juniors at Oxford’s Lafayette High School were only thinking about the adventures senior year had to offer, Hunter Knight was paving a path for Properly article his future Tied success. In 2013, just before his senior year, Knight found his talents designing t-shirts for clubs and classes had launched him into a career path even he could have never imagined.
the intention of entering Ole Miss in 2014. But, the summer before his senior year, a simple little summer job he created for himself altered that course. Now, three years later, this young entrepreneur has built a business most anyone would envy. His company, branded Properly Tied, is marketed as “Timeless Apparel for the True American Lifestyle.”
Having been accepted into PrePharmacy program at Ole Miss, Hunter had spent his entire high school college prep with
Hunter started his company in summer 2013 with a simple product base -- eight neckwear designs, two t-shirt designs and a couple of hat designs. When asked about how it all began, Hunter commented, “I figured it would be a part time job online through high school and maybe college -- maybe provide a little spending money

here and there. But, after a short time, it became its own living, breathing thing.” Although his first line included some t-shirts, they were not his initial product base. Hunter said, “We started with some higher-end items like the ties that were all hand made and popular at the time, and we sold a ton of them. But then we wanted to offer something a little more universal and easier to mass market, so the t-shirts were an additional product we added to the ties.” He added, “It did not seem like we were trying to mass market and sell a bunch of t-shirts. They were more of a “gimme” type of addition to the brand we had already started with the ties.” He launched Properly Tied, June 7, 2013 and pushed it online through Facebook, bloggers and other social media. “And we sold a few thousand of one print of a t-shirt overnight essentially. That is what started it and blew it up by getting the name out there,” he said.
When asked about how you follow that type of initial success, Hunter laughed and said, “After the first launch, we added another print to spice it up. The following month, for the Fall, we released a whole collection, adding polos and this and that. Fall of 2013, was our first season where we had the first collection, and that was when we picked up our first retail accounts.” Keep in mind, this was all before he graduated high school. He initially started out in his bedroom, or, what he refers to as his “real estate” in his parents’ home.
Then, he grew into the extra bedroom and invaded the dining room and kitchen until his parents “kicked him out,” so to speak.

They suggested building a space next to their home to work from. But, even that 2,000 square foot space was soon too small to accommodate the space for Properly Tied. This year, he expanded to another facility for a total space of 6,000 square feet. What started out with 12 different products essentially has evolved into 4,000 different products. Hunter reports that he invested all he had saved from doing odd jobs like mowing grass and setting up tents in the grove into his first product launch, and he has not had to borrow any money or seek investors to continue the growth of his company, debt free.
In the spring of 2017, Properly Tied will be launching 6,000 products. The Properly Tied brand can now be found in over 400 specialty stores in the Southeastern United States, with a few outliers in other areas of the nation. The future of his company is building momentum into new product areas. Future expansions include an entire youth line of clothing and an entire ladies line as well. Properly Tied now employs over 12 young people, all under the age of 26! Each person offers insight into how to keep Properly Tied grounded in the roots of a proper southern lifestyle while keeping a pulse on trends and traditions for future generations.

St. Peter s Pumpkin Patch
...the harvesting of a community
Story by: Meagan Robinson
St. Peter’s Episcopal Church holds an annual pumpkin patch sale that gives Oxford residents a unique opportunity to give back to the community. For the past 21 years, proceeds from the pumpkin patch have helped support youth and children’s programs at St. Peter’s Church. Earnings help with student funds and help send youth on mission trips.
The pumpkin patch in Oxford does not make people pay to look at the pumpkins, and they do not have business hours. Local chain stores such as Walmart and Home Depot sell pumpkins, but the experience is different. St. Peter’s is on the edge of the Square attracting college students and other community members.
St. Peter’s has been known throughout the community as the pumpkin church. Several Elementary school classes have a pilgrimage to the patch to pick the perfect pumpkin, while several families find the backdrop of bright orange winter squash perfect for a fall portrait session. 28 Sign up for daily headlines from hottytoddy.com
This is one of the only places in Oxford where customers can walk up and pick out a pumpkin without having to travel to a farm. The closest pumpkin farm to Oxford is 30 miles away in Pontotoc. The Pumpkin Patch is run by volunteers from the church and college students. Marty Dunbar has been volunteering at St. Peter’s for over 20 years.“I’m a member of St. Peter’s, and we all chip in to man the patch,” Dunbar said. “Being on that corner is a definite advantage because of the visibility.” “Located in a college town has helped the pumpkin patch continue throughout the years” said Kara Howland. “Many college students support it, and out-oftown guests associated with the college help increase pumpkin sales.”
The Pumpkins are offered vary in size, ranging from as small as softballs to as large as car tires. Pumpkins USA is located in North Carolina and is a fundraiser for nonprofit partners that provide products and services. They send sample price pumpkins to help St. Peter’s determine the prices. The local police and citizens help keep watch over the patch when church volunteers are unavailable. The patch runs on the honor code. Citizens can even take pumpkins and give money at a later date. Many people drop off money they owe in the church mailbox. “St. Peter’s is so lucky to have a supportive community for this project,” said Howland. “Everyone loves the patch and helps take care of it. It is truly a community event.”

OXFORD FILM FESTIVAL
CELEBRATING THE ART OF INDEPENDENT FILM MAKERS MAKE PLANS FOR FEB. 15th -19th, 2017
A little-known secret road to Hollywood where actors and filmmakers travel runs right through Oxford, Mississippi. Each year, independent filmmakers gather in Oxford to showcase their films in a culmination of events known as the Oxford Film Festival, held in February. When asked to explain the Film Fest to the novice, Oxford Film Festival’s Executive Director Melanie Addington said, “To me, the Oxford Film Festival is a way to dive into independent storytelling. With 140 films available within a five-day span, the Film Festival provides opportunities that you would not normally have to see and interact with films, offering interactive ways to experience cinema. The
filmmaker is there, and the guest can ask questions and meet the actors and such.” Independent Films are motion pictures that are produced mostly or completely outside of the major film studio system. They are distributed to audiences by independent entertainment agencies through festivals and small-screen viewing. This independence allows artists to keep their vision pure and bring all the elements to the screen that they envision, free from the bureaucracy of major studios and political interests. The ownership remains solely to the writer and/ or filmmaker. Addington added, “Normally people go through sources like Netflix as a way to view
36 Sign up for daily headlines from hottytoddy.com
Independent film, but Oxford Film Festival offers ways to see and experience the film with people and meet the makers.” The Oxford Film Festival entertains and educates its participants with a variety of films attracting filmgoers of all ages and backgrounds. The festival also supports moviemaking in the area through the production of the community film and support of OxFilm Society, which loans equipment to filmmakers filming in Oxford “A full schedule will be released in December, but we always kick off the Film Festival with Oxford Community Film, which this year is called “Firemax.” The film will debut on the first night, which is Wednesday, February 15, 2016 and it is free to the public.” stated Addington.
In addition, this year’s event has an interactive event sponsored through a grant from the Mississippi Development Authority called Fest Forward. This includes a virtual reality exhibition and educational programming for youth that will allow the Festival to shine a spotlight on emerging technologies where some of the most interesting evolutions in cinematic storytelling are taking place. Cost to attend the festival ranges from $10 to a VIP pass of $150 which will get you into all the films. There are student discounts as well. Last year over 3,800 people attended the Film Festival, which was a growth of over 100 attendees from the previous year. More information and schedules can be found by visiting OxfordFilmFest.com.
Oxford Film Festival is slated to take place Feb 15-19, 2017 and will showcase films, offer discussion panels and provide learn experiences from industry leaders. Locations vary from Malco Commons, The Powerhouse, and Oxford Conference Center as well as a few others in the works.
