Game Day 101:

A Freshmen’s Guide to Surviving Football Season

ame day is a magical time in Oxford and on campus. Our usually quiet small beautiful town and campus become home to some of the nicest, passionate and well-dressed fans in the college football world. However, learning to survive football season without a few bumps, bruises, blisters and headaches can take some time unless you have some guidance along the way. For the years incoming class, I have assembled the top ten tips from recent graduates and upperclassmen. This should help any freshmen or transfer student learn the best way to survive football season and make memories that will last a lifetime.

1. Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen

Wear sunscreen! With the student section having moved to the north endzone last year, the student section is in direct sunlight for most of the day. “I cannot stress this enough, you will need sunscreen for early games and night games. You think the tents will protect you in the Grove but you will burn.” – Lindsey, Class of 2015.

2. Be in the Stadium for Pregame

“Be there in time for pregame festivities. There’s nothing like ‘Locking the Vaught’ for the first time as a student with your best friends.” – Kate, Class of 2015

3. ‘Lock the Vaught’

“This is one of my favorite traditions from football season. If you don’t know what ‘Locking the Vaught’ is, you will soon. Link arms with your neighbor and sway until your team runs onto that field. It’s the best part of game day.” – Tyler, Class of 2013

4. Be Prepared to Stand

“If you are sitting in the student section and you want to be able to see the game, you will need to stand. Be prepared for this. There is very little sitting for the four or more hours that you are in the stadium.” – Jontae, Class of 2018

5. Wear Comfortable Shoes

“Yes, those heels are cute, but can you stand in them for multiple hours? My biggest tip I can give is to wear comfortable, closed-toed shoes. “One of the best parts of game day is seeing everyone dressed up for the game and decked out in red and blue. But remember to check which color the game is. You will get a lot of comments if you show up to a red game wearing blue. Also, my biggest pro tip, don’t wear anything you mind getting dirty. You never know when you’re going to encounter a drink shower.” – Taylor, Class of 2014

“If you want a seat, especially for SEC games, show up early. If you want a good seat, show up really early, like an hour and a half early. The student section fills up quickly because it’s general admission.” – Alison, Class of 2016

8. Stay Until the End

“If you were performing and half of the audience got up and left, it would be understandable that your confidence would be shaken. Do not do this to our team. Even if we are losing, do not leave. Stay and support your team until the end, they deserve it.” – Kyle, Class of 2014

9. Learn the Chants, Cheers, and Songs

“Learn the HottyToddy, the Fight Song, the Alma Mater, when to yell Ole Miss, and when to be quiet. Do not be the person yelling the wrong thing at inappropriate moments, such as when a player is hurt. Be proud but be respectful.” – Hailey, Class of 2018

10. Have Fun

“Football game days are some of my best memories from college. Being surrounded by so much Ole Miss spirit all day long, celebrating a win or consoling a loss with your friends on the Square afterward, and supporting your team and your school. I cried when I left the Grove to head to the game my senior year because I knew it would never be the same again. It is some of the best 28 Saturdays of your life, or more if you stay a student longer. Enjoy them. Care Walk Continues To Bring Awareness & Philanthropy To Ole Miss Campus By Peyton Day

ednesday, September 6, hundreds of college women gathered in the Grove at 5:00 in the evening to celebrate the University of Mississippi’s 11th annual Care Walk. Care Walk is a charity event hosted by Ole Miss Panhellenic each fall. The proceeds of the event go to the Baptist Cancer Center of North Mississippi to provide breast cancer screening services to underinsured patients. Care walk is planned each year by Panhellenic council in conjunction with Jennifer Eastland, coordinator of marketing at the Baptist Center.

“This tradition showcases the dedication of Greek women at the University of Mississippi to philanthropy. College Panhellenic President Caitlyn Clegg stated, “Many of our chapters are top fundraising chapters for their respective organizations, and it is heartwarming to see everyone come together to help fight a cause that affects all women, regardless of affiliation.” This year marked Clegg’s fourth year participating in Care Walk. Having served on the judicial board last year, she found herself well equipped to help plan and supervise this year’s event as part of the College Panhellenic Council. Because the event is held before rush each year, the participants of Care Walk are distinguished by shirt color: active sorority members wore fuchsia shirts, while potential new members (PNMs) wore light pink shirts. “This event helps PNMs understand how important philanthropic obligations are when joining a sorority,” said Clegg, “However, CARE Walk is an LOU community event that is not recruitmentfocused.”

Several survivors gave their testimony to the crowd from the Grove stage, including a former Rebelette who was active in the Ole Miss Greek community when she attended the University. The participating women were then led by the speakers on a walk around campus. Campus UPD was posted along Rebel Drive and Fraternity Row to control traffic while the women walked. This year, the walk concluded with snow cones, and a photo booth for the women to document their experience. A tradition for over a decade, Care Walk is sponsored by many Oxford businesses. The businesses that contribute vary from year to year. There was also a table that gave participants the opportunity to write a breast cancer survivor’s name on a piece of paper headed “I walk in honor of ”, which could then be safety-pinned to the back of the participant’s shirt. “My stepmom had breast cancer, and seeing the effects that this awful disease has on people is heartbreaking,” Clegg shared. “It was such a great experience,” recalled New Orleans native and PNM Brooke Williamson, “all the girls who went out to support this cause truly embody how service-oriented and selfless the Ole Miss community is.”

BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL Jackson Beer Company Brings Craft Beer Expertise To Oxford By Steven Gagliano

ackson Beer Company’s shelves have been stocked with 300 unique craft beers from 40 breweries since the store opened in December 2016. There’s no doubt that Oxford is a drinking town, and owner, Allen Jackson saw a need for a bigger selection of craft beer in town. “I try to bring in something new every week. Sometimes it’s 10-15 new things, other weeks it’ll maybe be one or two,” Jackson said. “With craft beer, it’s all about what’s new. I enjoy when people come in and ask what’s new because It gives them a chance to try new things.” While Jackson realizes some may not think they’ll enjoy craft beer, he also knows that when curious customers find the store, he can find something that they’ll like.

Happy to Help “Craft beer can be intimidating because there are so many to choose from, and people may think of an overpowering flavor each time, but if you give it a chance, you’ll find something you like,” Jackson said. “When someone says ‘I don’t like beer’ that’s like saying ‘I don’t like food.’ You haven’t tried it all.” Jackson mentioned the importance of connecting with his customers, and that’s why he takes the time to get to know each person who comes in, learning what they like and don’t like. In an effort to allow customers to find their favorites, Jackson Beer Co. allows them to build their own six packs from the individual beers on the shelves. “Building your own six pack gives you the chance to try new things without worrying about being stuck with beer you don’t like. I like to let customers choose for themselves, but I am always

here to help when someone is looking for a recommendation,” Jackson said. “Connecting with customers is one of my top priorities. I don’t look at this as a beer store. I see it as a destination where people can come hang out, try different beers, talk about the beer, and learn new things.” Don't Worry, Be Crafty Jackson came to Oxford after spending time in Washington D.C. which is a top-5 market for craft beer. Mississippi is currently ranked 51st in the country in terms of craft beer sales, according to brewersassociation.org, and while that may seem like a challenge for Jackson, he enjoys what that means for his business and the people of Oxford. “I don’t look at that ranking as a bad thing; I look at that as a positive because there’s a lot of opportunities to bring new people in and educate them in craft beer as they develop their own style and tastes,” Jackson said. With a large population of out-ofstate students, Jackson emphasizes the importance of bringing in a variety of breweries from around the country. “So many people come to Oxford from out of town and want their local beer, and they know a lot about craft beer,” Jackson said. “I’m proud to offer them a place where they can find what they are looking for.”

Jackson keeps ten kegs on tap at the shop for customers to sample, and to fill up the growlers. Jackson describes the growlers as a “big to-go cup.” The growlers are sold in 32 oz. 64 oz. and 128 oz. sizes. The 128 oz. can also be turned into a personally sized keg with the use of a special cap. Reason for the Season “My goal is to always keep something new on the board. I would never run the same beer back-to-back, never have, never will. Keeping different beers on tap is a key part of what we do, keeping seasonal beers up there that people can enjoy. New Students Experience Game Day at Ole Miss By Amy Goodin | Sponsored by U Club Townhomes The first weekend of September brought with it cooler temperatures, football games, and a flood of new students to the Grove and the student section at Vaught Hemmingway Stadium. Many of these students, including freshmen, transfer students, and even graduate students, were experiencing game day at Ole Miss for the first time. With all of the popularity and coverage that tailgating at Ole Miss has gotten over the years, it is easy for outsiders to believe that it is more hype than substance. students to describe their first game day experience. Some of the students were in awe of the beauty that surrounded them in the Grove, some were excited by the community they discovered among other Rebel fans, but all of them discovered a place and a family that they will return to for many years to come. “I feel like if I was to look up tailgating in the dictionary, they would have a picture of the Grove,” said Daniel, a freshman from Tennessee. “Although the Grove contains unending beauty just on a

regular school day, the tailgating tents add something extra that cannot be found anywhere else. At my first tailgating experience I learned that the Grove reflects unity among the student body and fans from all over, thus making this a place where we don’t just go to school, but a place we can also call home. “The Grove was everything and more than I had imagined,” said Austin, a junior transfer student from Picayune, MS. “There is so much diversity and culture all happening at once. It’s a place where everyone comes together to support one team, one family. We are Ole Miss and I am proud to be a part of the Ole Miss family.” “The atmosphere you experience in the Grove and the stadium is hard to describe,” said Haley, a junior transfer student from Hattiesburg, MS. “The Grove is a magical place

that is filled with lively people who welcome you to join in on their fun. The stadium is packed full of students, parents, alumni, and fans that are there to support and cheer for every second of the game. It’s like no matter where you are from, we are all one big family just celebrating the game together.” “The Grove on game day is absolutely perfect,” said Jessica, a graduate student from Arkansas. “It’s amazing meeting new friends and the energy of the crowd during the game was like nothing else I’ve ever experienced. My first game day as a student is definitely something I will never forget.” Though each of these new students had a unique experience for their first game day, all of them were overwhelmed by the beauty, openness, and family they discovered at Ole Miss. On this day, every new student became part of the Rebelnation family.

Taxis There are about 10 taxi services offered in Oxford, and while prices vary, the ease and convenience is worth the price. Taxi services include Angel Taxi, Austin Taxi, Rebel Taxi, Oxford Taxi, among a few others. Simply google “list of taxis in Oxford, MS” and a list, along with the number for the taxi service will appear. Prices may vary but are usually about $10 per person. The City Council sets acceptable rates for the taxi services to prevent price-gouging on Ole miss Game day weekends.

Uber Uber has entered the Oxford community for the second time in the past few years. Under a new Mississippi law, Uber has been available in Oxford for a year or so now.

Apartment Shuttles There are a few apartment complexes in Oxford that provide free shuttles to and from The Square on weekends for their residents. This option is very convenient for students given the cost efficiency. Who doesn’t love a free ride? Locations that offer this service are The Hub, Highland Square, and The Retreat. Just in case you’re all out of money for transportation.

“Uber approached the city of Oxford a few years ago wanting to become a “vehicle for IN hire,” but didn’t want to follow the guidelines that have been set on other vehicles for hire in the state," according to Oxford Mayor Robyn Tannehill. When Oxford police made the announcement in 2016 that Uber would return on its Facebook page, it was met with an overwhelming reaction of 601 shares and well over 700 reactions ranging from “likes” to “love” to “wow!” You can access Uber through the Uber app that can be downloaded on your phone. Type your pickup location into the search bar, and an uber should be coming your way! Payments are taken via PayPal or by entering your credit card information.

Highland Square offers free shuttles on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and runs from 9 p.m. until an hour after the bars close.

Pedi Cabs If you want a unique open-air experience, try catching a ride with one of Oxford’s Pedi Cabs or The Flying Tukk. OXFORD These little peddling cabs are positioned along the square and are willing to take you on a cruise to nearby locations. So, sit back and enjoy the night air.

The O.U.T. Bus The Oxford’s Public Transit system (OUT bus) runs many routes around Oxford as well as Ole Miss. Fare for a single ride is $1, and students may ride for free. For a schedule of transit routes visit www.oxfordms.net.

Most of us consider some Thanksgiving dishes so sacrosanct that our holiday feast would not be complete without them. The list varies according to region and family, but always includes a turkey, dressing, potatoes, pumpkin, cranberry sauce, nuts and (since 1955) a green bean casserole. For both sides of my West Tennessee and Arkansas-Mississippi Delta family, the must-have list always included regular and oyster cornbread dressing, candied sweet potatoes, squash casserole, corn pudding, asparagus with hollandaise and a wild rice dish. Dessert always included pumpkin, pecan and chess pie, boiled custard and homemade coconut cake. And then there was my Uncle Enos’ Tennessee country ham soaked in ginger ale for 24 hours and packed with brown sugar before being smoked overnight in a pit. Memories of that ham still move me to tears. My hubby’s Appalachian family tradition included cornbread dressing chock full of turkey bits, creamed sweet corn made from ears of Silver Queen frozen fresh-picked from the back yard field the previous summer, home-canned Kentucky Wonder green beans sautéed in homecured bacon drippings, persimmon pudding, creamy mashed potatoes and sweet potato pie. Whenever the entire Triplette and Sherrill clans gathered, the array of cakes, puddings, pies, relishes, slaws, pimento cheese dips and casseroles would outshine any first-class Vegas all-you-caneat buffet. Humans have a burning drive to seek the unknown, to peek around the corner or follow the trail less traveled to taste something new and delightful. (Reference: George T. Lock Land, Grow or Die) So in celebration of our uniquely American holiday, this column features several side dishes that fall a bit outside our normal Southern culinary comfort zone. As the kids used to say to the mythic Mikey, “Try it. You’ll like it.”

THANKSGIVING VEGGIE COMBO 2-4 T olive oil 1 T balsamic vinegar 2 lb Brussels sprouts, trimmed and capped Kosher salt 4-oz pkg smoked prosciutto cubetti (cubed) 1 c butternut squash cubes 1/2 c fresh cranberries Kosher salt to taste 8-10 twists of fresh cracked pepper 1 c chicken broth 1 T Tony’s Creole seasoning Clean the Brussels sprouts. Toss in the olive oil and balsamic vinegar and lay them on an oiled baking pan. Sprinkle with Kosher salt. Roast in oven preheated to 350˚F for 10-20 minutes, turning once. Cook the prosciutto cubetti in a greased large skillet, tossing to cook on all sides. Add the butternut squash and a splash of olive oil if needed. As the squash begins to soften, stir in the cranberries and chicken broth. Add salt, pepper, and Tony’s. Simmer on medium-low until the broth reduces by half. Stir in the Brussels sprouts, bring back to a simmer and serve.

Pumpkin Kale Penne Pasta 3 T olive oil 4 c chopped kale, spinach or turnip greens 1 c chicken broth 1 T lemon juice 16 oz penne pasta 1 tsp kosher salt 2 T butter 1/4 c fine-chopped shallots or sweet onion 4 cloves garlic, minced 15-oz can pureed pumpkin Splash of hot sauce 1/2 c heavy cream 1-1/2 c shredded Parmesan, divided Salt to taste 48 | Sign up for Daily Headlines from hottytoddy.com

SAVORY STUFFED APPLES 16-oz loaf of Kroger Private Selection Multi Multigrain Artisan bread 2 slices oatmeal bread 2 T olive oil 1 medium sweet onion, fine-chopped 1/2 c celery, fine-chopped 1 lb loose-pack sweet Italian sausage 2 c chicken broth Kosher salt to taste 1 apple, fine-chopped 6-8 medium sized apples Slice the artisan loaf; cut each slice into cubes. Repeat with the oatmeal bread slices. Toss together and set aside. Sauté the onion and celery in olive oil heated in a large saucepan. Add the sausage and work with spoon or spatula until completely browned. Stir in chicken broth; simmer until liquid reduces by half. Pour over the cubed bread and stir to blend completely. Add salt to taste. Stir in the chopped apple. Prepare apples for baking by using a knife to remove the core. Press enough stuffing into each hollowed apple until overflowing. Position stuffed apples, touching, in a baking dish and add about a half inch of water to the pan, or cushion the apples on layer of leftover stuffing spread in the pan. Bake at 350˚F for 45 minutes to one hour, or until apples are cooked to soft stage.

Clean the greens and remove large stems and veins. Chop fine. Sauté in a skillet with olive oil, cover and simmer until greens wilt. Stir in chicken broth and lemon juice. Cook until liquid reduces completely. Set aside. Cook the penne pasta in salted water to al dente stage. Remove from heat and drain.While pasta is cooking, melt butter in a large skillet and sauté the onion and garlic until transparent. Stir in pumpkin puree until mixed. Add a splash of hot sauce. Simmer on medium-low, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes. Whisk in heavy cream until blended. Simmer for about a minute and remove from burner. Pour pasta into a large mixing bowl. Add pumpkin sauce and toss to coat completely. Pour in the greens, including any remaining juice and toss to mix. Add half the Parmesan and toss to blend. Pour mixture into a 2-quart casserole dish. Sprinkle remaining Parmesan evenly across the top. Bake in preheated oven at 350˚F until bubbly, about 30 minutes.

We Chose Oxford

Enjoy our “Reflections” post — one of many vignettes and stories featuring memories of days gone by. This installment is from Bettye H. Galloway as seen in Issue #53 of “The Oxford So & So.”

was born in Lafayette Springs, Mississippi, just two miles from the Pontotoc County border, close enough that half of my acquaintances claimed Pontotoc as their town and the other half claimed Oxford in Lafayette County. I later learned why. It was very simple—we all thought Pontotoc was the town of choice, but the few of us who owned land had to go to Oxford, the seat of Lafayette County, to pay our taxes. Thus at my ripe old age of five, my family migrated to Oxford. Saved by the Age At five years of age, I had been allowed to study at the great Lafayette Springs twelve-grade school and had passed the primer and first grade. We moved to Oxford in the early fall of my fifth year, just shy of my birthday on January 4th. When my mother attempted to enroll me in Oxford’s school, she was informed that I was not eligible to enroll, that to attend first grade I had to be six years old by January 1st. Consequently, by virtue of three days, I had to wait out a whole year before I could start to school! The day arrived when I could finally start to school. I immediately learned that

Lafayette Springs was a really good school: I sat in the Oxford classroom day after day listening to the new students learn their ABCs, bored to tears because I was reading and writing cursive and reading from the books from the library Mama checked out for me. My first two years in Oxford were not much fun. The Good Ole Days But, when I found new friends and made my way around the new little town, things changed for the better. I discovered that the town and its people were really good. It was a place of about 2,000 people where all the kids went “out to play” in the mornings, and their parents never worried about them. We kids gathered together, roamed all over town, and if we got into or made trouble anywhere, we got a spanking from the mother of the yard we were in, and other mothers said “thank you,” and nobody yelled “child abuse.” If Mama needed me, one or two telephone calls found me and brought me home. It was a wonderful, carefree, safe life. I lived about a mile from school on the Square, which was no distance for a country girl. Each morning I would get

dressed, fasten on my roller skates with a skate key which was on a cord around my neck, and head for school. I soon learned which hills were too steep to skate up (but, boy, were they fun coming down!) and where I had to watch for uneven pavement and tree roots. I had strict orders not to play on the cotton bales stacked in the vacant lot just off the Square, and of course, I had to spend about half an hour with the other kids playing cowboys and Indians in and out of the bales. The Best of Both Worlds Mama worked with the county health department as what would now be called the school nurse. She visited the county schools, lined up all the students, and gave them typhoid or diphtheria shots or whatever they needed at the time. There was no signed permission slip from parents then, it was just a thing that was done when we didn’t have so many rules and regulations. Her school job meant that she only worked during the school year. When she was finished with work and when school was out in May, we packed up, bag and baggage, and moved home to Lafayette Springs for the summer. There we pulled off our shoes and fished and waded the creeks until August when we put our shoes back on and moved back to town to start to school. I had my country friends and my city friends; I had the best of both worlds. Now and Then When we first lived there, Oxford was a place of peace and tranquility where even the nearby college kids had manners. one town marshal, but that was all we needed. The police “station” consisted of a wooden chair and a telephone on the wall of a space between two buildings on the Square. Some years we grew in population, and some years we did not grow. Sometimes we had great mayors and aldermen, and sometimes we did not. To paraphrase a noted author, growing up in Oxford was the best of times and the worst of times. I have watched Oxford grow for over three-quarters of a century, but it grew gradually and quietly so that we were hardly aware that it was changing. From my early childhood, living in the quiet little town, it has grown to a bustling city with over twenty thousand citizens in the city proper. It is touted in national publications as the number one city in the nation in which to retire.

A city transit system boards over 60,000 people per month. Several new hotels are under construction, as are new residential subdivisions, shopping centers, and a $300 million hospital. The city continues to grow, but to me it will always be the little town where I spent my first two grades listening again to the ABCs I learned earlier in my Lafayette Springs school.
