EDITOR’S LETTER
D
o you save old keys? I do. And every time I look at a particular key that sits on a shelf in a prominent spot in my house, I travel back to my favorite home and find myself standing in the foyer. It’s the key to the house I lived in when my parents moved our family to Michigan in the 1970s — the key that unlocks a treasure trove of memories as I imagine sailing through the front door and into the foyer. Above was a huge brass chandelier that hung from a more than two-storyhigh ceiling. Blue slate tile and an Oriental rug that I picked out with my mom at J.L. Hudson’s were underfoot. Two antique chests flanked the door. Inside those chests were extra dinnerware, board games, playing cards, and poker chips. The doors and drawers stuck every time we looked for more plates or a deck of cards, and I was always afraid I’d break the fragile pulls. Atop the chest were model ships built by my father. As you walked through the foyer you’d notice a gold-gilded, wood-framed mirror hung in a convenient spot for checking your appearance upon arrival or takeoff. A powder room door came next, and then it was just a couple steps straight into the kitchen/dining room/ family room. If my siblings were reading this letter they’d surely say, Megan, you’ve missed the big piece! Fear not; I’m about to divulge the foyer’s main attraction. The pièce de résistance in this space, looming large, was a huge to-scale steam locomotive that my grandfather built. I never knew the man, since he was much older than my grandmother (and was 55 when my father was born!). He worked for a locomotive manufacturer in New York and thought it would be cool to build this mammoth train, complete with a real engine. There was a switch beneath it, and we’d turn it on to hear the engine chug.
16
It was encased in museum-style glass and sat on a long wood table. In this foyer, you’d get a quick sense of the people who lived there: history and design buffs with a love for games! Indeed, a home’s entryway should evoke a welcome feeling. Inside this issue are foyers filled with cool chandeliers and natural light. Captivating art and glass, wood, and metal handiwork mingle to create an “aaaahhh, I’m home” feeling. Everything from chic opulence fit for royalty to a warm ambience complete with a record player awaiting family and guests fill the foyers. They’re winners in every way. Not unlike a foyer, the pages that greet you in this magazine also welcome. They set the stage for what’s to come, giving you a look at a couple of the Detroit Design Awards judges’ projects, interior design trends, and some astute craftsmen and their products. Next, we enter the magazine’s “great room” of sorts. Here, it’s time to sit back and take in all the winning Detroit Design Awards beauty, from powder rooms to water features, closets, and finished basements. What each of these top designers, architects, and builders brings to the table isn’t just good planning, chic styling, or quality selections and appointments. They’re also fashioning memories. The many pieces and design elements that make up a home or a room within the home possess superpowers that can generate big waves or little wisps of memories in a single glance. For example, I recently looked closely at a side table at my cottage that was once in my parents’ den. Decades ago, that table might have held a pipe and tobacco, books on trains and presidents, a glass of Scotch whisky, and a small plate of cheese and crackers. Pulling on the table’s drawer handle and wishing I’d see a pipe or some old matchbooks from my parents’ favorite restaurants, I could feel the person who’d typically sit in a nearby chair. He looked up, hearing a key turn in the front door. And in I walked, to a home I loved. A couple of weeks ago I created a tiny painting of that key and circled it with these words: “This was my key to my house on Oakmont Drive. Walking through the entryway was amazing.” Congrats to all the award-winners who make home design amazing. Memories are certainly in the making!

Spaces that Wow! Multiple-room remodel leads to workable rooms that impress TEXT BY JEANINE MATLOW PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARTIN VECCHIO
D
ayna Flory Rasschaert, designer and owner of Dayna Flory Interiors in Bloomfield Hills, took on a Birmingham family’s kitchen, breakfast room, laundry, and mudroom remodel, and the results are stunning. “This project was the perfect example of how moving walls and changing materials can completely change a home,” she says. “My clients wanted an open and cohesive feeling. Led by the wife, the appearance of the space also called for a certain level of sophisticated ‘pretty,’ ” she says. Working with the homeowners and the trades, led by Masterworks custom home builders in Macomb, the residence was transformed into an elegant, livable space. “The 11-foot original first-floor ceiling height and overall footprint was exciting to reinvent,” Rasschaert says. “Bringing in light and achieving a fluid feeling between spaces was the main design objective.” The open floor plan provides modern living in a traditionally designed home. The challenge was removing interior walls while maintaining the structural integrity of the home. A clever solution came from a floor-toceiling, double-sided glass cabinet that provides ample storage and display space. The tower of stacked cabinets fabricated by EuroCraft Interiors in
Sterling Heights creates a striking feature. Black frames add contrast to the crisp white kitchen with its thick marble countertops and chrome accents. A breakfast nook blends a cozy banquette with an oval shagreen table and brass armchairs. An organic concrete pendant layered with abstract art contributes to the sophisticated seating area. “Symmetry was a key design element,” Rasschaert says. This is evident in the perimeter cabinet elevations contained in drywall surrounds and a pair of paneled Sub-Zero fridges and freezers along the window wall. A Wolf range set off by a full-slab marble backsplash also highlights the symmetry.
ORGANIZED LIVING
Ample storage is a must in this sophisticated kitchen. Note the creative doublesided glass cabinet.

More walls came down to create a new mudroom with custom lockers that combines open and closed storage. The walnut bench, metal lattice, and brass hardware contrast with the painted iron cabinets. A cerused black-and-white wood console table offers the perfect landing spot for personal items, while an iron chair provides a place where you can sit down and put on shoes. On the second floor, a cedar closet became a convenient laundry room that was relocated from the main level. “Layering black-based cabinets with white uppers made the space feel larger. The black cabinets also help visually reduce the size of the washer and dryer,” Rasschaert says. “It’s the first room you see walking up from the first floor, and the umbrella-shaped tiles are a happy greeting.” The designer hesitates to take all the credit for this project, as she praises Masterworks, the contractor, and EuroCraft Interiors, the cabinet manufacturers. “I couldn’t have done it without them,” she says. The woman of the house can’t say enough about Rasschaert and the creative team. “Dayna is so talented and so nice to work with,” she says. “We were new to the area and we loved the location, but the house needed updates. The kitchen was very choppy, and we wanted to open it up and make it light and bright. We’re extremely happy with the outcome.” MORE INFORMATION: daynafloryinteriors.com

involves beating the material with leather straps in a process akin to distressing. “It produces a worn finish versus a polished one, reducing worries about spills and maintenance,” she explains. Marble countertops are among the many highlights of two kitchens Herzlinger recently completed. Before the much-needed renovation, the white kitchen with the leathered countertops had “a white wash on wood, which looked very dated,” she says. Designed for a family that owns a well-known restaurant, the 30-by-15-foot space features two roomy islands, including, one outfitted with a sink and dishwasher tailored for a sous chef. Other highlights include modern light fixtures, dark wood floors, glass-front cabinets, multiple sinks, and lots of room to spread out.

“They use the kitchen not only for their family, but also for visiting chefs,” Herzlinger says of the homeowners. The designer says white continues to be the most popular kitchen color among her clients because it “always looks clean.” She occasionally gets requests for a kitchen with a dominant color or black, but it’s usually for second or third homes, not typically a primary residence. The “before” of the black kitchen, which also features marble countertops, was a pre-fab red oak kitchen with a faux marble top that Herzlinger recalls “definitely wouldn’t do.” Materials in the black kitchen were chosen to be “classic yet fun,” and to function smoothly for the homeowners’ many catered events. Located in an alcove, the 15-by-15-foot space has a distinctive Shojistyle screen that allows it to be easily closed off when entertaining. “It’s in a condo,” the designer explains, and the homeowner “wanted to be able to see, and at the same time close it off.” The kitchen’s walnut island is used by the caterer but it’s also a favorite spot to have cocktails, the designer says. Warm woods on the island counter, in the bar stools, and on the patterned parquet floors complement the trim on the nearby screen. SCREEN TIME
This kitchen has a Shoji-style screen that allows it to be easily closed off when entertaining.
Gold accents and hardware add elegance and gleaming contrast to the dark cabinetry. Whatever the project, it’s the details that makes the difference, Herzlinger says. “The hood, the hardware, the edge detail — it’s like a monogram,” she says of the personalized spaces she designs. She reports that she’s getting more requests for gold or silver inlays, steam ovens, and special appliances. “Every kitchen I’ve done is tailored to the client,” Herzlinger explains. Even when it’s part of a whole-house project, the kitchen is one of her top priorities, and it’s given lots of thought and attention. “The kitchen is always treated like a star,” she says. hen Jeff Smith and Shayn Smith met in 2014, they discovered they had more than a surname in common. Over the following year, the two highly skilled woodworking artisans collaborated on several projects and found they shared a similar passion for their craft. It seemed a natural next step to combine their talents by launching their fine woodworking company, SmithMade. With a mix of nationwide residential and corporate clients, the Shelby Township-based business offers luxury custom flooring, furniture, cabinetry, and decorative surfaces. SmithMade’s unique specialty is custom veneer designs — an art form known as marquetry. Among their many upscale projects, they’ve created artful staircases, fireplace

surrounds, and wall panels, as well as intricate patterned wood flooring. They recently expanded their offerings with more commodity veneered panels for use by high-end cabinet and furniture makers. “We often work in partnership with other companies or designers and the client,” Shayn says. “We get to know the clients as individuals and find out what really matters or is interesting to them, so we can bring it into the design.” Adds Jeff: “Whatever a client can imagine, we can create. We like challenges. We take the time, do the research, and feed off each other. It’s important to be open to what’s possible (so we can) create meaningful pieces. We (make) 3-D drawings to give the client a clear description of the project, but we want the finished product to be even better and have a connection.” Their designs range from refined rustic to sleek modern, and the partners work with a variety of domestic and exotic woods including walnut burl, hickory, and African wenge. Depending on the vision for a project, it might incorporate different

luxurious elements such as leather, jade, abalone, or sterling silver. Many of SmithMade’s exclusive furniture pieces will become family heirlooms. “I enjoy designing specific things for specific people, and the artistic freedom that comes with each project,” Shayn explains. “I love working with different materials. In custom work, it’s always the little details that make it special.” SmithMade recently completed a multi-room residential project in Oakland Township. The duo’s artistry is on full display in the powder room, where a fumed eucalyptus wood wall featuring a spiral pattern carries over into a coordinating vanity, resulting in a stunningly seamless design flow. The partners have worked on many memorable commercial projects, including the creation of
statement tabletops for The Roosevelt New Orleans, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel. In a collaboration with Detroit-based design studio Pophouse, the artists fashioned distinctive wood panels for the Compuware Building in Detroit. SmithMade has also produced custom woodwork for luxury yachts and private planes — which, according to the partners, requires very precise specifications, ultralight panels, and special adhesives. Jeff and Shayn reveal that time is their biggest challenge in producing pieces that meet their high standard of craftmanship. While the pair regularly collaborates and works in partnership with other companies, SmithMade is solely the work of the two Smiths, who design, engineer, build, and sometimes install projects. “(We get a sense of) satisfaction from (giving) the client a one-of-akind piece with a meaningful story as a legacy. It’s something that will be in their family for generations to come,” Jeff says. More information: smith-made.com

JOSEPH PHILIP CRAIG CUSTOM HOMES with Brian Neeper Architecture, PC The use of natural cut stone is prevalent on the exterior of this mountain modern home. Clean linear stonework with natural limestone caps adds to the natural feel of the home and its setting. Inspired by ski trips out West, this home combines rustic earthy elements with contemporary architecture. The stone continues inside, where it’s featured along stairwells and around the fireplace, providing that feeling of being connected to an outdoor setting.

Nestled between the pool and the house is an arrangement of cozy outdoor rooms including a dining terrace and covered fireplace lounge. KILANO DESIGN + BUILD Designing this pantry, located underneath the existing staircase, presented many challenges, but the result is a dreamy space that’s perfectly tucked away. In the corner, the height of the window made it difficult to continue the base cabinets and countertops, so they were pulled away from the window and designed to be “floating,” allowing light to pass beneath them. A Parisian aesthetic inspired the soft blue cabinetry, fluted nickel hardware, brass faucet, and handmade mirror backsplash.

Walls were taken down to the studs, damaged trim and built-ins were replaced, and a new fireplace featuring custom tiles from a local artist was built. MEG CORLEY Deep tones in a saturated color palette create a cohesive feel in this unique yet classic library. The tuxedo sofa and wingback chair add a masculine and comfortable element. A nontraditional coffered ceiling floats on-center, housing a leathertrimmed drum light fixture. The client’s love of hunting is expressed through hide pillow in the chair, unique art, and a custom gun case housing a vintage collection. Grasscloth panels in the millwork add to the warmth and layering.

POPHOUSE This executive home office was designed as an extension of the client’s downtown Detroit office. The transitional stone and brass wall unit located behind the custom desk serves as a functional shelving display and is a backdrop for the client’s ever-important virtual meetings. Lighting, acoustics, and technology were designed, specified, and coordinated by the design team. The furniture and millwork were thoughtfully designed and meticulously crafted. The result is a uniquely beautiful and highly functioning home office.

NICHOLAS VANDERHOVEL, CMKBD Finding the right shade of green for this Michigan State University-inspired home was a concern. The clients wanted soft gold details, and the green needed to complement that and achieve the look they wanted. Since the home is older, there were structural issues to contend with — like a window on the wall where the range stands. An antique mirror was placed over the window, so the outside of the house wasn’t impacted. Inside, it’s now a beautiful focal wall!

MAISON BIRMINGHAM with Sullivan-Strickler Design A handsome collection of masculine materials was chosen to create this gentleman’s bar. Dark crocodile leather, walnut, darkened steel, and Greystone marble-like porcelain work together to create depth, intrigue, character, and mood. Accent lighting via concealed LED light channels in the cabinetry and porcelain shelves further enhances the deep mood of the space. ANAHI HOLLIS DESIGN A 1910 brick Colonial was lovingly updated by restoring the original woodwork, repurposing materials, and bringing the home into the present. With limited square footage, creativity was needed to achieve an impactful kitchen featuring a restored Detroit-made Chrysler icebox. A glamorous first-floor powder room is the result of combining an unused rear staircase and coat closet. An antique dresser serves as a vanity, and the original soapstone from the kitchen was repurposed for the countertop and backsplash.

Viewed from the street, the height, proportion, and materiality of the garage present a quiet, seamless extension of the original house. The pavilion-like structure is clad in a painted poly-ash siding. In the foyer, white floor-to-ceiling wainscoting was installed. This drenched the stairs in light and added classic sophistication. The original kitchen was completely closed off from the rest of the house, so all the walls were removed — making the kitchen the true heart of the home. JOSH HENRY DESIGN with Seeley Arc The goal for this project was to create a two-family home that feels like a single-family home. Relationships of lines, bold graphics, and materials visually break up the spaces while maintaining balance. LAURA ZENDER DESIGN The earthy color palette and rustic arches and beams of the Ypsi Cocktail Club relate well to this company’s original raw distilling space, and the owners also wanted to bring to mind a classic French bistro. Built-in shelving along the back wall provides great storage and display for retail items. Everything was kept clean and white so products can shine and be switched around seamlessly. Concrete flooring spans the main studio, but antique barn wood in the office warms it up and adds interest.

DETROIT DESIGN AWARDS 2022
RISING STAR
With stellar commercial and residential projects under her belt, and a growing collection of Detroit Design Awards, there’s no doubt interior designer Annie Kordas is deserving of the 2022 Rising Star honor TEXT BY MEGAN SWOYER ROOM PHOTOS BY JEFF GARLAND
S
he’s got a French-education background, so it shouldn’t be surprising that some French-inspired ooh-la-la and je ne sais quoi shows up in the work of the 2022 Detroit Design Awards’ Rising Star. Mais bien sûr, Annie Kordas, owner of Annie Kordas Interiors in Grosse Pointe Farms — who’s been named the top designer among the up-and-comers in the nominated field — has a degree in French language and culture from the University of Michigan. After years of teaching French at the International Academy Okma Campus in Bloomfield Hills and the University of Michigan–Dearborn, Kordas decided to focus on her love of design, antiques, color, and global influences, and made a move to transition her career into interior design. From her first days as a designer, working on fashioning spacious medical offices in Grosse Pointe Woods and putting her stamp on the executive board room at the Metropolitan Baking Co. in Hamtramck, to more recent projects with

young families who want her to create the perfect stylish-but-cozy home, Kordas has aimed for top results. She wowed this year’s Design Awards judges in the Home Office and Use of a Collection, Antiques, or Art categories, and placed in the top three for her design efforts. You’ll want to update your own home office once you check out the photo of her winning office in this issue’s Interiors section. (She chose a pair of contemporary Jonathan Adler lamps to illuminate four original paintings of men, and white Herman Miller soft-pad chairs are a nod to the Mid-century Modern era. The walls and drapes are neutral, to allow the antelope carpet flooring and dark green ceiling to take center stage. It’s stunning!) Last year, Kordas won first place in the Detroit Design Awards’ Children’s Room/Play Space category. A busy mom of two grade-school-age children and wife to George Kordas, the designer prefers tradition-with-a-twist. She’s told the magazine in the past, “I don’t know what makes my brain tick!” Whatever it is, that unique catalyst inspires a vintage-modern feel that’s “kind of French,” she has admitted. She also prefers pattern play, the use of dark wall colors every now and then, wallpaper (even on the ceiling, at times), marble (in all bathrooms), and a clever mix of art, furnishings, and materials. Congratulations to Annie Kordas! We can’t wait to see what she designs next.

READERS’ CHOICE | BEST OVERALL HOME
Contemporary Home Takes First Place Brian Neeper Architecture, PC with Joseph Philip Craig Custom Homes PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES HAEFNER
OPEN-PLAN CONCEPT
An airy, expansive kitchen and family room take center stage indoors. Outside, it’s all about exterior beauty, from a stunning entry canopy to metal-covered roof lines.
C
ongratulations to Birmingham-based Brian Neeper Architecture, PC with Joseph Philip Craig Custom Homes for the beautiful design work on a contemporary home in Bloomfield Hills. They took first place in the Readers’ Choice award for Best Overall Home. The winning beauty features just under 3,300 square feet, finished, on two levels. Its suburban site location evokes a rural feel within a neighborhood of gravel streets and several lots that are beyond 1 acre in size. The custom home’s design goal was to capture the essence of a ski lodge-style residence, showcasing a contemporary architectural expression that was inspired by the homeowners’ love of ski vacations. A private outdoor covered terrace in the rear of the home is especially pleasing, while an entry canopy and garden alcove to the south welcome visitors. The rectilinear exterior forms and metalcovered roof lines are streamlined and linear, balancing the rustic details of the natural cedar trim and timbers. The home’s open-plan concept focuses on a large central living area with a soaring beamed ceiling and a natural stone fireplace with a floating stone hearth.
With plenty of natural light, the interior design is sleek and modern; a wide-plank oak floor, combined with stone and white oak accents, warms the entire palette. Other noteworthy features include a European-style kitchen that opens to an informal dining space and a large family room with exterior exposure to the north; the first-floor owners’ suite, which is tucked behind a floating oak-tread stairway; and the second floor, with two private bedroom suites. All in all, this mountain-modern design exudes a warm and casual feel within the structure of clean and contemporary styling that showcases its ski-vacation influences. Well done!

ALL-STARS
A LIFE-CHANGING DECISION DESERVES AN ALL-STAR ON YOUR TEAM PRESENTED BY:
For Detroit Design’s Real Estate All-Stars 2022, we commissioned Professional Research Services (PRS) to conduct a survey of all metro Detroit brokers and agents, to determine the top agents and mortgage professionals in the area. Agents who were chosen as Real Estate All-Stars had a total residential sales volume that fell within the top 5 percent of metro Detroit agents. The mortgage professionals on our list came highly recommended by agents and brokers in the region, and the mortgage professionals with the most votes were the ones who were named Real Estate All-Stars for 2022 in the mortgage category. Inclusion in Detroit Design’s Real Estate All-Star list is based solely upon merit; there’s no commercial relationship to the listings, and listings cannot be purchased. While metro Detroit has many experienced real estate and mortgage professionals, the ones listed here are considered Detroit Design Real Estate All-Stars. These Real Estate All-Stars know the communities they serve. They can best guide you, whether it’s a buyer’s or seller’s market, and introduce you to the home of your dreams.
