DRY CLE ANING & L AUNDRY SERVICE

AWA R D British Fires took their latest product, the New Forest electric fire (pictured) to New Orleans in the USA last month and won the prestigious industry award for “The Art of Fire” at the American fireplace show for their stunning new flame, log effect fuel bed and innovative heat outlet design. Michael Athay, Sales & Marketing Director said “It is not only a great achievement for us as a company but also for flying the flag for the UK in a highly competitive US market. This was our first time displaying our products in the USA and as you can imagine we are extremely proud to bring home this award”. You can see the award winning New Forest fire in the West Country fires showroom at 27-33 High Street, Totton, SO40 9HL.

Dorset based Barker, the largest domestic laundry in the UK and a leading specialists Dry Cleaner, is promoting its contactless dry cleaning and laundry services and advises its clients that effective laundering and dry cleaning will help to kill Coronavirus germs. MD Matthew Barker said, “We already provide a private laundry service across Greater London and southern England to approximately 3,500 customers, providing a weekly collection and delivery laundry service. “In the current Coronavirus pandemic we have decided to extend our collection and delivery services. Maintaining a clean environment is more important than ever to protect our health and we urge clients and potential clients to use our services to help eliminate the risk of catching and spreading COVID -19. “There is much ongoing research currently being undertaken to establish the temperature at which the virus is killed, albeit this is currently undetermined. In our dry cleaning process and our ‘fully finished’ laundry service process we subject fabrics to way in excess of 60 degrees celsius and are confident that these temperatures are sufficient to kill the virus. Our service washes, however, are at lower temperatures.” Anyone wishing to enquire about prices and further details on how to book a laundry or dry cleaning collection slot is advised to contact the Barker Group on: Tel: 01202 291295 or email sales@barkergroup.info

CITY COUNCIL

EFFECT ON HOUSE DESIGN?

URGES PEOPLE TO STO R E WAST E R E S P O N S I B LY

Winchester City Council has reminded would-be fly-tippers that they risk large fines and imprisonment, following a recent spate of incidents in the district. The most recent case was a large trail of waste, including various kitchen items and building materials, that blocked a rural road in Southwick. The council’s waste removal team spent a morning clearing up the site at Portchester Lane and discovered evidence at the site to aid a prosecution. The latest incident comes as there has been an increase of waste being dumped across the district with five reported in the last ten days, including a hoover and a mattress being dumped on the A32 between Wickham and Droxford. Fly-tippers can be fined up to £50,000 and may also be imprisoned for up to five years.

While the global outbreak of Covid-19 has touched all of us and every industry, not least the world of house building, what many have experienced, perhaps for the first time, is working from home. For some this prolonged period of home isolation has meant we’ve needed to create somewhere in the house where we can properly work, somewhere other than perching on the sofa with a laptop while the kids do their morning PE session with Joe Wicks! What the home worker needs to be truly successful is dedicated space. Over the ten years that Alfred Homes have been building throughout Winchester we have, where possible, incorporated this sort of space into our specifications. Sometimes with children in mind it’s been a neat homework area in a family kitchen, a good-sized study or expansive rooms on top floors; properties that have been snapped up by the already committed home worker. Our three new homes under construction in Shawford (and all recently sold or reserved), follow this trend with ground floor studies plus well-planned, third floor accommodation including a large games room that makes an excellent office. We have also created extra space above the double garages. We have similar designs at our current development of 11 properties at Meadowlands in Winchester, making home working a viable option, not least because these homes are also conveniently located close to the mainline station for those essential trips to the city. There are many pundits who are predicting that Coronavirus will have a lasting effect on all of us. We believe that by incorporating home working spaces into our designs we are future-proofing for a world where remote working might well become the new normal.

INTERIORS | CALMER HOME

Simple steps to make your home calmer and less cluttered Spring is here and it’s the perfect time to treat your home to a detox. Gabrielle Fagan taps up the Topology design gurus for tips. The start of this new season often makes us yearn for clean, calm, refreshed spaces at home. Amy Brandhorst and Athina Bluff, aka interior design duo Topology, have teamed up with Habitat to share expert tips on how to banish your home’s winter hangover and make it warm weather-ready and fabulous. The stylish pair have taken a lot of inspiration from Feng shui. Although it might sound a tricky concept to get your head around, the traditional Chinese practice basically centres on the belief that the specific arrangement of shapes, furniture and objects can have an effect on the unseen energies around us, and combine to harmonise and balance a space. Creating a positive home environment, it’s believed, benefits our mental and physical health too.

TOP TIP: An interior furnished with natural materials earthenware, linen, marble-based lamps and objects, woollen cushions and blankets - will increase that feeling of being connected to the great outdoors. Lift items off the floor Lifting furniture, clutter and everyday objects up and away from the floor can easily create a lighter, detoxified and more uplifting space, according to the pair. “Seeing more floor space and light through and around objects in a room helps a space feel much more weightless and clutter-free,” they explain. TOP TIP: Sofas or chairs with high legs make furniture appear less bulky and dominating. Open storage and wall shelves will complement the style and add to an airy, uncluttered effect. Use rounded shapes Shape - not size - is everything! Spherical, round, or gently curving furniture and home accessories can not only create a sense of balance but is visually pleasing, say the designers. There’s even science behind the theory, they point out, as research has found that receptors in the brain light up dramatically when people are around the presence of curved or round objects, rather than angular or jagged shapes.

Introduce more nature Biophilia is a bit of a buzzword in the worlds of interiors and wellness right now - and in essence is a nod to upping the greenery in rooms with indoor plants, to harness our innate need to connect with nature. The Topology pair point out the powerful potential effect on our wellbeing of filling our homes with plants, as it’s thought we’re significantly happier when we’re surrounded by the natural world.

Designate a clutter drawer No home can be completely free of clutter - so create a place specifically for tucking it away. Try the designers’ two-step plan for a clutter-busting solution. First, home in on that clutter and gather it into one place (at some point, you can work out whether you can sort it, reduce it, or get rid of it altogether). Next, select one drawer to store unsightly or practical items that can’t be stored elsewhere in a home. Unsightly electrical cables, newspapers, children’s toys or spare accessories could be the perfect candidates for that ‘tidy away’ compartment, they suggest. Create a multi-sensory home Finally, finish with a flourish by making your home a multi-sensory space, urge the interior gurus. This simply means a space which appeals to all of our senses: touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste. Apparently, if all those needs are catered for, explain the duo, it helps us feel relaxed and nurtured in our homes - what’s not to like? TOP TIP: While in general, the scent of lavender and vanilla and soft fabrics such as cashmere make us feel comforted, it’s more important to focus on what makes you feel good as an individual.

Experiment with different colours, textures, fabrics and scents to help you find the perfect ingredients for your special sanctuary, suggest Brandhorst and Bluff. “After all,” they say, “our homes should be personal to each of us and adhere to our needs.” As part of The Home Detox campaign, Habitat will host a series of interior design, houseplant and cookery workshops in its London stores throughout March 2020. 3. 3. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F/Gas 6). Place a sheet of parchment paper on a baking tray (do not use foil as the bhajis will stick to it). Using a spoon or your hands, make 20 equal-sized onion balls and place them on the parchment paper. Bake for about 40 minutes, or until nicely browned. Remember, ovens vary, so check the bhajis from time to time. Serve with a good chutney and/or raita. Note: If you would rather deep-fry the bhajis for up to 27 extra calories per bhaji, heat 10cm (4 inches) of rapeseed (canola) oil to 165°C/330°F in a wok or saucepan, and fry them for about two minutes - until just turning brown. The bhajis will probably still be a bit raw in the middle. Remove from the oil and heat the oil to 185°C/365°F, then fry again for about two more minutes until crispy and brown and completely cooked through. You will need to do this in batches. Transfer to paper towels to soak up any excess oil.

University of Winchester launches £3.4m fund to support students living in halls of residence

The University of Winchester is making available funds of £3.4 million to support its students who have returned home because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and are no longer living in their University accommodation. Students who have gone back home to their families for the Government lockdown period will pay no rent for their accommodation from 27 March onwards until the end of their housing contract. Students who continue to stay in their University accommodation during this period will receive a 50 per cent discount. The University is also working with the Winchester Student Union and national bodies to call on private providers to do what they can to support those students who have private accommodation contracts outside the immediate control of the University.

Vice-

Chancellor of the University, said: “These are unprecedented times and so we have made the important decision to launch this fund in the best interests of our students, to support them during this very challenging time. “Our students are amazing and I want to thank them and our fantastic staff for their commitment, hard work and agility in the face of the huge shock wave we all face from Covid-19. I, along with the University’s senior managers and governors, have been hugely impressed with the way students and staff have rapidly adapted to a new way of learning and working, and all at the same

including providing accommodation for frontline staff.” The University is operating but currently responding to the Government lockdown, with all teaching moved online and the majority of staff who are able to do so working remotely. Only critical on-site services are open. Other support for students includes a newlylaunched coronavirus helpline, while the Student Services team continues its usual support on a variety of students matters, including academic skills, remotely.

Tips to keep fit during lockdown

No gym? No worries! Here’s how to stay active without breaking the rules. The coronavirus shutdown could mean bulging waistlines with most of the nation’s favourite sports and activities banned for at least three weeks. But being trapped in the house doesn’t have to mean being stuck on the sofa, and with the NHS recommending everyone does at least 150 minutes of exercise per week, it is best to keep moving. Here’s how to stay fit and healthy while avoiding Covid-19. YOGA Visions of rubber-limbed Instagram yoga bunnies might be daunting but in reality it begins with just a little light stretching to improve flexibility - there are even a range of movements that don’t require a yoga mat. There are thousands of free websites offering video tutorials, so it is a case of shopping around and seeing which you get on best with.

Most websites have dozens of videos ranging from beginner to advanced, as well as routines tailored to plus sizes and to those with mobility issues. SKIPPING It might conjure up memories of playground rhymes, or even mental images of Rocky Balboa but skipping is simple and gets the heart rate up in no time. All non-essential shops are now closed and even Sports Direct has belatedly shut its doors, so you may need to rely on a younger member of the household for a skipping rope if you don’t already have one. STAIRS If you are short on gym equipment then you can always make use of a set of stairs, should you have them. There are various exercises you can try including stair pushups, reverse lunges and tricep dips - even just walking up and down them a few times will at least get you moving. SOFA The call of the sofa might be strong - but see if you can resist Netflix for 20 minutes and try a quick workout instead. It might sound simple but even sitting down and standing up again 10 times in a row will work out your thighs, or placing two hands on the sofa while extending one leg behind you will get your muscles burning. Search “sofa workout” online for hundreds of videos promising to get you fit from the comfort of your living room.

WELLNESS GURUS Endlessly chipper wellness gurus might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but perhaps a dose of their endorphin supply is what is needed to get you through the Covid-19 crisis. Joe Wicks, known as The Body Coach, has made it his mission to keep parents sane by offering daily online PE lessons to children during the lockdown, while Australian personal trainer Kayla Itsines is also popular. For those who prefer a bit of northern grit, Olympic heptathlon champion and Sheffield’s finest Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill will also be sharing tips to stay active. BALLET Thought ballet was beyond you? Why not have a go from the privacy of your own home? Tamara Rojo, principle dancer and artistic director of the English National Ballet, has launched a range of YouTube videos. They aren’t for the faint-hearted, so make sure you stay well within your limits to avoid tweaking a hamstring, or alternatively look for a barre workout - an exercise regime derived from ballet but better for those with no previous experience. GARDENING If you are lucky enough to have a garden, get out in it. In fact, the nation’s most avid gardeners probably won’t notice the lockdown at all. Now could be the time to plant an insect garden - purple flowers attract butterflies - while pots of herbs and easyto-grow seeds are available in most of the major supermarkets. You could even attempt an insect hotel with whatever you have lying around like twigs, pine cones, old roofing tiles and bricks - they need to be wedged into a frame to create lots of bolt holes for our six-legged friends.

SINGING It doesn’t burn off calories but singing can do wonders for morale and choirs all over the country are going online to prevent their voices going rusty during the pandemic. TV choirmaster Gareth Malone has set up the Great British Home Choir, while the 500-strong London City Voices is streaming its rehearsals directly on to YouTube. MEDIATION Aimed at slowing the heart rate rather than raising it, meditation might just keep you sane and save your relationships after a month cooped up with your nearest and dearest. There are dozens of apps promising to help you breathe your way to peace of mind - as long as you can find a quiet corner of your home to focus. Calm, Headspace and Insight Timer are all popular, and will really be put to the test when confronted with parents trying to be teacher, breadwinner and live-in entertainer all at once. A marriage of science and art “My palette knife technique came about by happy accident”, Hannah says. “I am a scientist at heart and my quest for anatomical accuracy would often override any artistic looseness. In frustration I moved to destroy a painting with a builder’s knife, but the paint scraped off in such an interesting way that I had to explore the idea further. I try to ‘break’ the painting and force the viewer’s brain to work harder to find the image. Why a picture is worth 1000 words when it comes to selling your home Images

are

such

powerful

things.

Impressive photos can influence emotion, we’ve all seen images that have stopped us in our tracks and given us that ‘wow’ moment. They’re particularly vital when it comes to selling a new home. We’ve all found ourselves online searching through property listings at some point, good photography commands attention causing customers to stop and take notice.

At Antler Agency, we recently project managed a lifestyle photo shoot for one of our clients. Due to launch the next phase of an already successful development in central Midhurst, West Sussex, we were tasked with creating the brochure and marketing campaign ahead of launch. The Brief Capture the high end specification and quality finish included in a Metis home within a promotional brochure. Focus on the elements that make them unique as a developer: bespoke design, the details of the premium appliances and superior presentation. Planning Stage Extensive planning over many cups of coffee is a natural part of our process. Before we start a project, we always consider the ‘why’. What’s the purpose of the brochure? Who is the target market? How can we elevate the standard new homes brochure to make this one stand out and attract buyers?

A theme was set upon – ‘A day in the life of…’ – and the team used this as their basis to work out which areas of the home to focus on. Marwell Zoo’s animals need your help… Hampshire conservation charity Marwell Wildlife has launched a fundraising campaign to help cover animal costs during the coronavirus shutdown. Marwell Zoo near Winchester is currently closed to guests however it is business as usual for a dedicated team of zookeepers, vets and scientists. They are working tirelessly to ensure the zoo’s animals, many of which are endangered species and part of important global breeding programmes, receive the same high level of care and attention.

It is hoped the fundraising drive will help with the zoo’s daily animal expenses such as feed, bedding and heating while the zoo is unable to receive income from visitors. The 140-acre wildlife park is home to hundreds of animals, from endangered Amur tigers, snow leopards and white rhinos to giraffes, gibbons and penguins. Launching the campaign, which has already received more than £1,500 in donations, Marwell Wildlife Chief Executive James Cretney, said: “While Marwell Zoo is closed to our guests, we want to reassure you that we are keeping the care and welfare of our animals as our highest priority. Our talented teams including keepers, vets, scientists, maintenance workers and landscapers are working tirelessly to ensure there is no interruption to the dedicated and compassionate care each and every animal receives, and we are in awe of their energy during this unsettling time.

“Marwell relies on day ticket, membership, retail and catering sales; things we are no longer receiving; in order to operate. We are reducing non-essential expenses, but we simply cannot do the same for the daily care all our animals need. We are so grateful for all the kind wishes and offers of support and we feel incredibly lucky to be part of your community for nearly 50 years. You can help us through these difficult times. Your generosity will ensure we can go the extra mile caring for the animals so that future generations can experience the joy of coming to the zoo, and knowing what we can do for conservation here in the UK and the world. “We are asking for donations through our Just Giving page, as this platform also enables us to take Gift Aid. Home-grown hiking trips to plan for when lockdown ends Use time indoors to appreciate what's on your doorstep by planning a walking holiday, says Sarah Marshall. Along with limiting our social interactions, the UK's lockdown will play havoc with personal pedometers. There's only so many steps you can clock up between the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen, after all. Once restrictions are lifted, we'll all be yearning to stretch our legs and venture on expeditions far more exciting than trips to Superdrug or Sainsbury's. While now is the time to stay put, there's no harm in armchair drifting - using time indoors to plan al fresco trips for later this year. If you do dream of striding over hills and up mountains, or rambling along coastlines and through forests, consider one of these exhilarating hikes in the UK and Ireland. A novel escape WHERE: The Hardy Way, Dorset Victorian poet and novelist Thomas Hardy captured the essence of rural England in many of his great works, romanticising locations throughout the Dorset countryside. Keen rambler and literature lover Margaret Marande joined the dots between many of these famous spots by creating a long-distance 220-mile walking trail, documented in her book, The Hardy Way - A 19th Century Pilgrimage. Spend the night at The Inn in Cranborne where Hardy once stayed, visit Win Green, featured in Tess of the d'Urbervilles, and head to Shaftesbury - referred to as Shaston in Jude The Obscure. Along the way, admire quaint, chocolate-box villages and sweeping chalk downs.

Wide open adventures WHERE: The West Highland Way, Scotland History and folklore sweep through the lochs and glens of Scotland, so choosing the best route to follow can be hard. 7 Steps for kitting out a home bar Drinks editor Sam Wylie-Harris shares her top tips for serving cocktails at home in style. We’re in the midst of a cocktail renaissance, when every bar worth its salt - a pinch of Maldon can nicely temper sweetness and highlight freshness, by the way. Likewise, if a drink is too sweet - add lime or bitters; too tart - add sugar syrup; too strong - add a few drops of water to a stirred drink, and if it’s a shaken cocktail, pour it back into the shaker and shake again with fresh ice. But I digress. Back to the original point: Whether you’re perched on a plush velvet bar stool or something more urban, chances are, the bartender has curated a well thought-out drinks list, with some new takes on the classics and a few modern twists to showcase the intrinsic beauty of a well-crafted cocktail - but what if you want to be the one fixing the drinks and calling the shots?

3. Stemware Some of us would happily drink from anything, from a trendy jam jar to a candy-coloured crystal coupe, but ideally you should have at least four styles of stemware (nothing wrong with cheating and doubling up with a similar type of glass for various cocktails). And they should look as glamorous and exciting as possible within budget - bearing in mind you need to be prepared for breakages. For short, mixed drinks on the rocks, you’ll need an old fashioned or tumbler. A high ball for long, mixed drinks. Short drinks which are shaken, strained and served without ice should be poured into a martini glass or coupe (good for cocktails with egg whites). Champagne or wine cocktails should be served in a flute or a large wine glass.

While cocktails are synonymous with the high life, there isn’t actually any secret or mystique to creating a beautifully balanced drink - you just need a few tools of the trade, and a suitably stylish setting always helps. Here’s how to lay the foundations for your own little black book of cocktails... 1. Presentation A drinks trolley always makes a great showpiece. It’s where you want to place your prized stemware (we’ll come to that later), crystal decanter (could be a family heirloom), ice bucket, tongs, and other bits and bobs. They can be pricey, but they certainly make a great investment piece if you can afford the outlay. Otherwise, charity shops are good hunting ground for vintage tea trolleys, which can be painted piano black or glossy white to look the part. A cocktail tray on a sideboard always looks attractive too, and the high street currently has some great options. 2. Bar tools The bar essentials for making cocktails are a jigger (dual spirit measuring cup), Boston shaker (two separate cups which form a tight seal, so there’s no spillage when you shake), mixing glass (if you prefer your martini stirred and not shaken), strainer (to hold back any herbs, fruit or ice when you strain the drink), long bar spoon, sharp knife and a citrus juicer.

How to brighten your home for spring with a touch of yellow Sam Wylie-Harris rounds up the sunniest yellow homeware and accessories to shop now. The power colour of spring, nothing signals happiness and hope like bright, sunshine yellow. As well as dazzling visually, yellow can lighten the mood, make everything look fresh and bright - and most importantly in the scheme of things, it’s very easy to place this pigment in the home and jazz up your space. Whereas stylists and fashionistas often cite yellow as a difficult colour to wear and suggest it should only be worn sparingly, interior designers love to incorporate yellow in their design edits. Best of all, yellow is surprisingly versatile and an easy shade to mix and match. You can use it as a colour block to break up a room, introduce pops of canary yellow, primrose or mustard to brighten up a dark corner, or for a sunlit twist, energise an open-plan space.

Here’s some of our favourite ways to work yellow into rooms right now... The Lover Sofa - 3 Seater in Barley, from £1,373, Willow & Hall A statement sofa positioned just so always looks amazing, and you can play up the sunny accents by stacking it with cushions in a warm gold (we love anything tasselled, especially velvet for a luxe boho vibe). Otherwise, go for a striking black and white monochrome print to add depth and texture against the bold yellow backdrop and keep the lines clean. Artificial Floral In Window Box, £25, and Artificial Ditsy Floral In Vase, £22, Next Bright as brass and zero maintenance, faux foliage doesn’t get more fabulous than this. Especially when you consider these trumpet blooms bring joy and cheer 24/7. Emma Bridgewater Daffodils And Narcissus Set of 2 Half Pint Mugs, £39.95, Daisy Park Bright and beautiful, you can build on this set of mood enhancing mugs by stacking them with other daffodil prints. You’ll have a host of golden daffs to add extra cheer to your morning coffee in no time.

How to create a mindfulness corner in your garden As focus on the wellbeing benefits of plants and nature grows, RHS scientist Alistair Griffiths talks to Hannah Stephenson about mindfulness corners. RHS director of science, Professor Alistair Griffiths has done a lot of research into wellbeing and gardens. Now, he’s teamed up with award-winning garden designer Matt Keightley to help more of us dig into these benefits with a new book, RHS Your Wellbeing Garden, in which the pair offer a range of ideas for using greenery and gardens to distract from the stresses of life, whether it be butterflies, birdsong, or sensory and scented plants.

“It’s about being in the present, backed by evidence which shows that if you spend a little bit of time just stopping and thinking about yourself and how you are feeling, it helps to be surrounded by the right elements of your natural habitat.” Researchers in Edinburgh also found people living closer to green space had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol than those living further away, he adds. “There’s a worry that we’ll get ‘Nature Deficit Disorder’, where the less nature we have within our habitat has a negative effect on our anxiety and stress,” says Griffiths. Curious to ‘grow’ some nature-inspired wellbeing or create a garden mindfulness corner of your own? Read on for Griffiths’ top tips... What should you include? “Key elements of life, like shelter and water, are relevant to a mindfulness corner, which is trying to create a refuge but with an ability to view outside of that,” says Griffiths.

“I hope this book will say, ‘Listen people, you are part of nature’,” Griffiths explains. “We’ve done lots of work into how we look after birds and bees, but we haven’t really looked at what a garden means for our own health.” There’s lots of evidence that being in nature is good for us - so why not create spaces specifically for this purpose? The idea is to create a peaceful corner, surrounded by plants, where you can practice some mindfulness. A fan of checking in for a “body health check”, Griffiths suggests: “Breathe more deeply and think about the different parts of your body and working through them to check your health status, surrounded by nature.

Where do you start? “Create an area of seating where you can sit alone, or with friends and family,” he suggests. Try to make room for plants which attract butterflies, bees and wildlife to distract you from everyday life. “Even on a balcony, if you can look at your wider view and see a wider part of nature. Picture-frame those,” adds Griffiths. “If there are trees in the city you can help to create a design to picture-frame that bit, like a window to nature.” Think about water It’s good to have an element of water, where you have the ability to see and hear the water and look at its reflectiveness, he advises. And if you only have a balcony, or no outdoor space at all? “Bring nature indoors,” says Griffiths. “You can make a mindfulness corner in your house, bringing greenery into those spaces, which will be more critical in relation to the future. Interior green walls are developing, which are becoming quite easy to maintain. “In my house, I have a couple of nice palms in selfwatering containers and some ferns in a corner. They sit in my office along with asparagus ferns along my windowsill. The greenery connects to the wider landscape. Even just having a couple of plants is the first connection people have with nature.”

Make the most out of your garden With these uncertain times ahead of us, our gardens become ever more important as a place to enjoy some fresh air and let children run around. With the warmer days ahead of us it is a great opportunity to revamp our outdoor spaces so we can maximise the use of them. At Reformed Plastics we offer a range of anti-slip decking to allow you to enjoy your garden whether it rains or shines! All of our products are made from 100% recycled plastic. We manufacture products ourselves and then sell direct to the Domestic and Commercial sector. As well as antislip decking we offer a wide range of furniture, fences, planters and gates to enhance your outdoor space.

Due to ever increasing importance to recycle and protect the environment, the plastic used is recycled in the UK and is the perfect alternative to wood. Our aims are to help rebuild the environment by utilising a commodity which people would otherwise just throw away, turning what most would consider rubbish into a valuable product for everybody. How strong is it? It is extremely solid and strong being able to withstand stress levels of well over 10x that of traditional timber. It is heavy, durable, virtually indestructible and will not need to be replaced. In short, it is worry free. Does it need to be cleaned? Our products only need to be cleaned after a spillage. The collection of airborne dirt is inevitable and we would recommend a simple spray-down with a hose or wipe over with a damp cloth on a regular basis to ensure that your purchase is kept in the best condition. Financial benefits Achieving value for money is a key driver for any purchasing

decision.

Although

products have greater up-front cost, their longevity and durability make them a more cost-effective option over the long term.

We are still here to help Our entire society is having to come to terms with the gravity of the current global pandemic caused by the COVID-19 virus and our hearts go out to all those who are being most effected and hard hit by this stark and surreal new reality we’re all facing right now. Following UK Government advice for us all to stay at home, we felt it was the right decision to temporarily close our workshop, however we will still be picking up calls, emails and processing orders from home ready for when the lockdown is lifted. Therefore please get in touch to discuss your ideas and future plans for any outdoor furniture, decking, fencing, gates, planters, raised beds and anything else so you’re all set for summer and able to make the most of your outdoor space. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the NHS staff, carers and all the other key workers who are working tirelessly during this period. Thank you too to all of our friends, customers and followers for their amazing support and understanding during these strange days. In these challenging times it is important that we remain strong, calm and look after each other!

BMW2 GRAN COUPÉ BMW is adding to its coupe line-up with the new 2 Series Gran Coupé which is priced from £25,815. There are three variants: Sport, M Sport and M Performance. terms of driving dynamics and agility within the segment, says BMW. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé is a standalone model with exclusive exterior design details including eye-catching contoured kidney grille bars, a mesh grille for the flagship BMW M235i xDrive M Performance model and, most strikingly, the all-new design of the rear lights. It will be available from launch with a choice of three engines – one diesel

and two petrol. A revised 1.5-litre threecylinder engine will power the entry level BMW 218i, where technological advances have reduced CO2 emissions by 29g/km over the previous engine, while boosting maximum power output by 4hp to 140hp. The 218i accelerates from 0-60mph in 8.7 seconds and can reach a top speed of 134mph. It will return 42.2-47.1 mpg with CO2 emissions of 123-114g/km depending on model.

switchgear and the driver can get a good position thanks to multi-adjustable steering wheel and centrally-aligned pedals. Ford has upgraded the cabin materials for a smarter look which works well, and with more rooms for occupants and boot space of 375 litres near-identical to that of a VW Golf, the Focus scores well for practicality. And when the rear seats are folded, the available load space of 1,354 litres is actually greater than that of the Golf. While you do have to move up the trim grades to get some of the kit that may be standard on rivals, there is no doubt that overall, the Focus is still a great package worthy of its top-selling status.

R O A D T E S T: M I T S U B I S H I A S X E X C E E D Mitsubishi’s ASX model has been revised with a tougher look, more powerful engine and an upgraded interior to help give it a distinctive edge in the hard-fought SUV sector, writes NICK FLETCHER. The ASX is a roomy and capable contender offering very good value for money, with prices starting at £20,295 for the entry-level Dynamic model which is well-equipped with standard features including alloy wheels LED headlights, privacy glass, heated front seats, cruise control, airconditioning, and reversing camera. It also has a digital radio, Bluetooth and smartphone link.

lane-change assist, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert. It is a substantial specification for the money and the exterior styling and smartly-designed cabin give the ASX a more upmarket appearance than its pricing might suggest. The frontal design has bold eyecatching styling with extensive chromework and large light clusters creating unmistakable presence and the cabin features quality trim materials and has a classy uncluttered dashboard with a large central infotainment screen which is easy to operate.

The ASX uses a 150 hp petrol engine with manual or CVT automatic transmission and four-wheel-drive is available on the top-range Exceed model which I tested recently.

On the road, the ASX impresses with its smooth and composed driving feel and excellent ride comfort. The 0-60 mph time is 12.2 seconds, top speed 118 mph. Average fuel economy is 38.7 mpg with emissions 167 g/km. The CVT automatic transmission has a 6-speed Sport mode with paddle shifts for those who want more involvement in the driving, and the normal two-wheel-drive system can become four-wheel-drive at the touch of a switch. Spacious, practical, versatile and with arresting visual impact, the new ASX is a strong challenger in the SUV sector and has the advantage of being more keenly priced than many of its rivals while still offering a generous level of equipment.

This version, with CVT auto gearbox, costs £25,945 and adds extra features including panoramic glass sunroof, leather interior, sat-nav, and additional safety kit including

R O A D T E S T: V O L K S WA G E N PA S S AT H Y B R I D E S TAT E While sales of SUV models are soaring, there is still a significant demand for the traditional estate car from those who require larger load capacity for family or business activities. So an estate car which is also a plug-in hybrid offering exceptional fuel economy and very low emissions would have additional appeal to those in the estate car market, writes NICK FLETCHER. The outstanding contender in this important niche sector is the Volkswagen Passat Estate, which is priced from £27,575 and is available with petrol, diesel and hybrid engines. I recently tested the Passat estate in plug-in hybrid form. Fitted with a 1.4 litre petrol engine, 6-speed DSG auto gearbox and electric motor, it delivers a punchy 215 hp for eager performance, yet has remarkably low fuel economy and emissions and can run up to 35 miles on electric power only. Top speed is 138 mph, the 0-60 mph time is a quick 7.6 seconds and emissions are just 39 g/km. The official combined fuel economy figure is 180.8 mpg and while ideal conditions would be required to achieve that figure in real-world driving, this is still a very economical estate car. In upper-specification GTE Advance trim it is priced at £40,860 and is laden with kit which

includes sat-nav, infotainment system including digital radio, Bluetooth, smartphone mirroring and other connectivity features, a plug-in charging point in the front grille, rear privacy glass, LED lights and leather upholstery. Extensive safety features include adaptive and predictive cruise control, parking sensors front and rear, lane-keep assist, city emergency braking, and driver alert warning. Five adults have plenty of head and leg room and the boot-space of 650 litres is close to being the best in the class, and can be expanded to an enormous 1,780 litres with the rear seats folded. Elegant exterior styling and a classy upmarket interior make the Passat Estate feel very special and that feeling continues once you start driving. Docile in urban traffic, it is a smooth quiet motorway cruiser and the overall driving dynamics and wide range of driver aids evoke effortless ambiance. The Passat estate has competition primarily from other German marques – Audi, MercedesBenz and BMW - but I feel the Passat comes across as the most accomplished, especially in plug-in hybrid form.

NEW L AND ROVER DEFENDER 90 Now available to order, the new Land Rover Defender 90, a three-door short wheelbase model priced from £40,290. It follows the introduction of the Defender 110 model which generated unprecedented demand and the company expects this smaller version to be equally popular. Land Rover says the Defender 90 has “unstoppable capability, with Short wheelbase and minimal overhangs resulting in excellent off-road geometry, making it the most capable Land Rover ever made.” The Explorer, Adventure, Country and Urban packs give New Defender a range of distinct personalities. For the Defender 110, the Urban Pack – which includes a front undershield, bright rear scuff plate and metal pedals, plus a spare wheel cover – has been the most popular choice, selected in more than 35 per cent of the configurations that included an Accessory Pack, followed closely by the Explorer Pack. The iconic 4x4 embraces 21st century technologies and introduces Land Rover’s Pivi infotainment, which features an intuitive interface and its own back-up battery for always-on responses. Advanced softwareover-the-air updates also ensure customers benefit from the latest software at all times, wherever they are in the world.

R O A D T E S T: F I AT 5 0 0 X CROSS PLUS The tiny Fiat 500 is an iconic city car first launched in the late 1950s but while millions loved its chic persona, there are those who wished it was just a little larger and more practical, writes NICK FLETCHER. So Fiat created the 500X, a much bigger version which while retaining cute styling echos of the original 500, has its own distinct character. With prices starting at ÂŁ18,810, a choice of varying-output petrol engines from 1.0 litre upwards and with three trim levels, the 500X has made a significant impact in its sector with sales already topping 500,000. All models get a touchscreen infotainment system with a DAB radio, Bluetooth, two USB ports and Aux-in, and you also smartphone mirroring, alloy wheels, cruise control and air-conditioning. Standard safety features include tyre pressure monitoring, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition and a speed limiter.

M AY 2 0

My test model was the top-spec Cross Plus version with the 150 hp 1.3 litre turbopetrol engine and automatic gearbox. Extra equipment includes larger wheels, reversing camera, LED headlights, sat-nav and connectivity features. This version costs ÂŁ23,500.

The elevated driving position gives good forward visibility and underway, the 500X has as easy driving feel. While the light steering is good for parking agility, the feedback at higher speeds is a little less precise though overall handling is still very good, as is the ride comfort.

The 500X is attractively styled and the interior trim materials have had a qualityupgrade which delivers impressive cabin ambiance. I found the seating rather firm by class standards but the cabin is spacious with good head and leg-room for four adults.

The 1.3 litre turbo-petrol engine has 150 hp, giving a nippy 0-60 mph time of 9.1 seconds and top speed of 124 mph. Average fuel economy is 37.7 mpg with emissions 145 g/km.

There are plenty of storage places around the cabin, including a large chilled glovebox. Boot space is a useful 350 litres, boosted to 1,000 litres by folding the rear seats.

90

Rivals in the sector include the Renault Captur, SEAT Arona and Citroen C3 AirCross but the 500X is a strong package and exudes the same engaging charisma and charm which helped make its smaller predecessor a worldwide success.

There’s no pressure to make huge feasts or dig out hundreds of ingredients either, with Riley offering easy ‘flavour hits’ at the beginning of each chapter, to be chucked on whatever you’re eating for a little pizzazz. “If you can’t be bothered to cook the rest of the book because you’ve got no energy, if you’re getting a ready meal, you can throw this gremolata on top, you can boost the flavour, you can add interest,” he buzzes. “If you’re doing a poached egg on toast, that’s not that flavourful, but if you put this on - with garlic, lemon, olive oil and salt it’ll bring it to life.
