FOUR NEW ARRIVALS TO ENSURE THEIR

SPECIES SURVIVAL

Marwell Zoo are delighted to have welcomed four new additions to their Endangered Przewalski’s horse herd. All four are female and they’re all doing well. Their births are great news for the future of this previously Extinct in the Wild species.

The youngsters can be seen grazing and playing together under the watchful gaze of their mothers.

Erin Luter, Animal Keeper, Hoofstock, said: “All of the foals are doing well and can often be seen laying or sunbathing in the valley field close by the rest of the herd. The first foal was born to mother, Lena, on 3 May. She’s named Xaela which means mystical or fierce in Mongolian. The second foal was born to mother, Tsetseg, on 11 May and is named Shara after a mountain in Mongolia.”

The younger two foals were born just one day apart with Bilüü arriving to mother Tuya on 12 June and Ereen born to Speranza on 13 June. Their names are both cities in Mongolia.

Erin continued: “These horses, that were previously listed “Extinct in the Wild”, are an example of how zoo breeding programmes can help restore threatened species around the world.”

Przewalski’s horses, which come from China and Mongolia, are the last surviving sub-species of truly wild horse in the world.

All four foals will play an important role in ensuring the ex-situ conservation of their species for future generations.

Erin continued: “Thanks to breeding programmes like ours at Marwell they can now be found in reintroduction sites in Mongolia and China and have been downlisted to Endangered.”

Current estimates suggest there are 178 mature individuals living in the wild and the population is increasing. In the wild they live in groups of between six and 17 animals with a stallion, mares, foals and young up to around two years of age. All the Przewalski’s horses alive today are descended from just twelve individuals.

The foals can be found with the rest of Marwell’s Przewalski’s horses in the Valley Field, which is opposite Café Graze.

For more information about our animals and to book tickets visit www.marwell.org.uk.

TAKE ON THE FIRE WALK!

Do you think you’ve got what it takes to step up to the (hot) plate and walk over coals for Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s Disability Charity?

The charity is looking for individuals and teams to take on the challenge to raise money for children and adults with physical and learning disabilities in Dorset.

The event takes place on Wednesday, October 9 at The Treehouse, Diverse Abilities new children’s services hub based near Bournemouth Airport. The event runs from 6.00pm – 9.00pm, and as well as the fire walk, participants will be able to enjoy great food, drinks and live entertainment.

An entry for the Fire Walk costs £10, and participants are encouraged to raise sponsorship money from friends, family and colleagues. Money raised will be used to fund Diverse Abilities’ much needed services.

Mariana Swain, events executive at Diverse Abilities, commented: “This is the first time we have held this event, and we are really looking forward to meeting the people who are going to take on this exciting challenge for us. It will be a great evening, with a really supportive atmosphere to encourage those who are apprehensive about the challenge. It’s a great team building exercise, or an excellent challenge to take on as an individual or part of a group.”

SLEEPING BEAUTY

Dreams can come true – and just weeks after appearing in the 70th anniversary tour of The Mousetrap, Lighthouse is delighted to announce former EastEnders and Grange Hill star Todd Carty will play King Tucker this Christmas in our family pantomime Sleeping Beauty.

“I had a great time here in April,” says Todd. “It’s lovely to come back to this wonderful theatre and, more importantly, it’s lovely to be asked to come back.”

From the same team that delivered the award-winning in-house productions of Aladdin last year and Cinderella in 2022, Sleeping Beauty is being written and directed by CBeebies star Chris Jarvis, who will also play the zany Dame Nanny Nutkins. Also returning are Poole-based Production Designer James Smith, Choreographer Daniel Donaldson Todd and Musical Director Adam Tuffrey.

“Lighthouse is well known for keeping it local and keeping it topical, which I think is a lovely touch,” adds Todd. “And Chris has a real mind for this – we’ve not worked together before, but I’ve run into him a few times on the circuit and he’s a lovely chap, very clever.”

As for his character, King Tucker, Todd says it’s in the very early stages of development, but he can’t wait to get started…

Sleeping Beauty follows the traditional story about the beautiful Princess Rose who, at her christening, is cursed by Carabosse the bad fairy to prick her finger on a spinning

www.lighthousepoole.co.uk

wheel before her 18th birthday and drop down dead. That horrible spell is changed by fairy godmother Sunbeam so that if Rose pricks her finger on a spinning wheel, she will fall asleep for 100 years unless kissed by a handsome prince.

Rose is sent to live on Brownsea Island only returning to the castle on the eve of her 18th birthday when the curse will expire, but Carabosse has a terrible plan to spoil the day…

As the story unfolds, we meet the bumbling King, wacky Nanny Nutkins, and court jester Happy Harry, who’s actually the most sensible of them all.

“I’ve done quite a few pantomimes and I like to have fun in panto,” says Todd. “I know lots of people involved with panto on both sides of the curtain. We all want to put on a show that everyone enjoys – grandma, grandad, mum, dad and the children, of course.“

Tickets for Sleeping Beauty are available now at https://www.lighthousepoole.co.uk/ or on 01202 280000.

Bedroom colours loved by interior designers

Here’s the lowdown on which shade of paint to choose for a design-led finish, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

When it comes to decorating your bedroom, it’s easy to get lost in the choice of colours available.

Some hues are bang on-trend, while others are specifically tailored towards a tranquil sleeping space.

And while mood boards and colour palettes can inspire our creativity, interior designers have the expert knowledge of what will realistically work in a space, while also helping us visualise aesthetics and what’s fashionable.

Here, paint and interiors expert, Anjelica Delfino from V&CO Paint, shares the bedroom colours adored by leading interior designers – and why you should be picking the same for an always on-trend aesthetic…

A blush pink has a stunningly soft, chalky quality that you don’t get with other shades of pink, which makes it great for bedrooms, highlights Delfino.

“It provides a gentle and balanced atmosphere in the home, while also adding a touch of elegance and femininity to spaces. It pairs well with a variety of colours and styles, providing versatility in design.”

She continues, “Additionally, blush pink creates a calming and welcoming atmosphere, making it an excellent choice for both contemporary and traditional interiors.”

Bedrooms and north-facing rooms are perfect spaces for blush pink, notes Delfino. “Plus rooms filled with plants is where this colour really comes to life.”

Neutral lavender

Interior designers use soft lavender colour schemes in their own homes because this creates a calming and serene atmosphere, promoting relaxation and tranquillity, reveals Delfino.

“The lavender plant has long been associated with sleep, from scent to colour, it’s believed to be deeply relaxing. For designers, its subtle, muted tone adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to interiors while maintaining a fresh and modern appeal.”

Delfino continues. “A patterned floral lavender wall would be an ideal choice for the bedroom, with matching light lavender sheer curtains.”

Navy blue

“Navy blue is such a timeless colour, it’s no surprise interior designers love to use it,” opines Delfino.

“It’s one of those shades that adds colour to a room but also behaves like a neutral. It’s very easy to live with – not trendy, but not boring.”

She says the depth and versatility makes it a great choice for the bedroom, as it can make a spacious room feel softer and more welcoming.

“Although a darker shade, blue generally is a colour associated with calm, and therefore often a shade interior designers love to use… a navy blue statement wall is timeless.”

Feature wall painted in navy blue | Alamy/PA

Verdant green

As Delfino points out, green is the colour most associated with nature, symbolising growth, harmony, and freshness.

“Incorporating green is one of the biggest recommendations of designers who seek to bring the calming and refreshing qualities of the outdoors inside.

“A top tip would be to paint the ceiling green. So much of life is spent looking at screens, we forget to look up, it’s where the best bits are – ask any designer or tour guide!”

She says adding colour and pattern to this neglected space completely changes the look and feel of a room.

“You could simply paint a block or disc of colour around a light fitting, or take a band of colour up the wall and across the ceiling.”

Soft yellow

“Soft yellow is a popular choice because it brings warmth and cheerfulness to spaces, creating a welcoming and uplifting atmosphere,” says Delfino. “Its subtle hue brightens rooms without being overpowering, also meaning it can blend with a variety of accent colours and materials.”

It’s a popular choice for bedrooms because it can bring a lightness to the space when a room lacks natural light, or on the smaller side, she adds. “Interior designers love soft yellows because they go so well with neutrals – and it makes the bedroom feel both airy and soft.”

ABOVE

Plush plum

Plum is a popular choice for interior designers because it exudes richness and sophistication, adding depth and elegance to spaces, underlines Delfino. “Its deep, luxurious hue creates a dramatic and cosy atmosphere, making it ideal for creating focal points or accent walls.

“Plum pairs well with a variety of colours, including neutrals and metallics, meaning it lends itself to both modern and traditional structures.”

Deep colours, such as plum, evoke the feeling of heaviness and warmth, which is an ideal aesthetic for bedrooms, she explains. “Due to the depth of the colour, it works well as a feature wall, or for smaller bedrooms, an accent colour.”

Expert tip

When choosing a colour for the bedroom, she says the main thing to consider is how the colour feels. “The bedroom should feel tranquil, quiet, and peaceful.

“While it’s still welcomed to have fun with the design of a bedroom, these qualities are essential for designers!”

So if you want to achieve an interior designer-approved bedroom, Delfino suggests incorporating these timeless shades into your colour scheme.

These sundowners will make a splash at your next soirée, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

When you want to rustle up the freshest cocktail with that all-important fizz sensation, a spritz is where it’s at.

Easy on the eye, super refreshing with a signature shot of bubbles – be it soda, tonic or Prosecco to polish up your palate – it’s a stylish serve that won’t tax your bartending skills when the heat is on.

Here’s what’s putting us in a sunny frame of mind….

ALLORA SPRITZ

When life gives you lemons… zesty or what! Allora Aperitivo al Limone (£25, 70cl, Allora) hails from the sunkissed island of Procida, off the coast of Naples. Inspired by limoncello, alongside lemon peel and leaves, the liqueur is infused with herbs and botanicals. The result? Deliciously moreish and refreshing…

INGREDIENTS

75ml Allora, 75ml soda, lemon wheel to garnish.

METHOD

Half fill a wine glass with ice. Add the liqueur, top with soda, stir and garnish with a lemon wheel.

Summer spritzes to leisurely sip in the sunshine

PALOMA SPRITZ

Sweet, sour and refreshing, if you love a classic Paloma this twist brings all the elements together, with the addition of bittersweet herbal notes of vermouth. Topped with Franklin & Sons Pink Grapefruit Soda (£20, 24 x 200ml, Franklin & Sons), it’s bright, balanced and bound to please.

INGREDIENTS

30ml blanco tequila, 15ml fresh lime juice, 30ml Cocchi Americano, 75ml pink grapefruit soda, grapefruit peel to garnish.

METHOD

Fill a wine glass with ice, add the ingredients, gently stir, garnish with a grapefruit peel.

BALDURS GARDEN SPRITZ

Mead may not be a tipple that rolls off the tongue, but this honey wine cocktail is cited as a Viking take on a refreshing Prosecco cooler. And the result? Nidhoggr Mead Co. Raspberry & Lemon Mead (£32, 70cl, Nidhogger Mead Co.) is pure nectar with its sweet, citrusedged, honeyed notes to tantalise your taste buds…

INGREDIENTS

75ml Nidhoggr Mead Co. Raspberry & Lemon Mead, 25ml fresh lemon juice, 100ml Prosecco, soda water to top.

METHOD

Chill a wine glass. Add the mead and lemon juice, stir slowly. Add the Prosecco and top with a shot of soda water. And there you have it.

GIN MARE SPRITZ

When it comes to food and drink culture, Spain is hard to beat – and this spritz marries three of our favourites for sunshine in a glass… Gin Mare Mediterranean Gin (£39, 70cl, Waitrose) with rosemary, basil, thyme and olives in the mix; sherry and Cava. Salud!

INGREDIENTS

30ml Gin Mare, 25ml fino sherry, 15ml sugar syrup, 10ml lemon juice, 75ml Cava, sprig of thyme to garnish.

METHOD

Half fill a balloon glass with ice. Add the gin, sherry, sugar syrup and lemon juice, stir slowly and top with Cava, garnish with sprig of thyme.

TANQUERAY PARADISO SPRITZ

A gin-based spritz made with summer edition Tanqueray Paradiso (£26.99, 70cl, Amazon), beguiling notes of Brazilian guava lend a citrusy twang, with fresh notes of lemongrass and London Dry gin in the mix. Versatile and open to lots of possibilities, Paradiso offers a fruity spin on gin…

METHOD

Fill a wine glass with ice. Add the flavoured gin, lemon juice and sugar syrup. Stir, then slowly top with Prosecco and soda, garnish with a lemon twist.

How to create the ultimate outdoor kitchen

Think an A-list open-plan party space to max the thrill of the grill, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

If you’ve got the area, love to cook in the open air and fancy going one step further, an outdoor kitchen is the bees’ knees – and fashioned for entertaining in style.

“And it doesn’t just have to be for balmy summer nights, which is lucky with the weather being somewhat unpredictable,” quips Looeeze Grossman, founder of The Used Kitchen Company.

“If designed well, it can be a great transitional space to last throughout the summer – and through cosy autumnal days, and chilly winter months.”

Here, she shares her expertise on how to create the most efficient layout to suit your lifestyle…

Planning

Before undertaking any DIY project, it’s important to clearly define your goals for the space, says Grossman.

Ask yourself: Do you want a simple area or full dining experience for socialising and entertaining guests?

Are you aiming for a variety of cooking choices, or will a single BBQ give you options to cook pretty much everything?

“Taking the time to answer these questions at the outset will ensure you end up with the perfect outdoor kitchen. Rather than wishing you’d installed a prep sink only to be running into the house to wash things,” she highlights.

You should also assess your budget and work out where your priorities lie. “If a top-of-the-range BBQ or woodfired oven is your dream, you may find you need to compromise elsewhere.”

Budget

Costs can vary hugely when it comes to outdoor kitchens, from top-of-the-range full kitchens which start at around £15k, to high street BBQs from a few hundred pounds, notes Grossman.

“If you already have an outside space, adding your own pergola and existing patio furniture with a BBQ and firepit can give you a great base for your outdoor kitchen.”

Ex-display styles can be an excellent choice if you’re looking for luxury on a budget, says Grossman. “We currently have a top-of-the-range outdoor kitchen which retails at £49k, on sale for £20k.

“While still at the top end of the budget, there are ways to cut your costs.”

If your budget is tight, she says to focus on essential features first, and add luxuries as your budget allows, such as fridges and additional storage. “If your budget doesn’t stretch to purchasing an outdoor kitchen in full, consider building the kitchen area yourself from bricks, reclaimed wood or concrete – and adding in your cooking equipment.”

Cooking equipment

Once you’ve decided what you want to include and set your budget, it’s time to start researching for the best bargains and best-performing products on the market, underlines Grossman.

“Remember to spend time checking reviews on Trustpilot and Feefo, and be cautious of false economies.”

“If you’re limited on space and budget, a compact high-quality BBQ should be your main focus,” suggests Grossman. “Many BBQs now offer the options to grill and smoke – and many also offer a rotisserie option.”

If space and money are no object, she says having a large BBQ and pizza oven together, with a prep area and firepit should tick the boxes.

“It’s also worth considering looking for ex-display or used outdoor kitchen equipment,” advises Grossman. “This can save you thousands of pounds and often comes with the added extras that weren’t originally in your budget.”

Key elements to include

Once you have your basics sorted, it’s time to consider additional items that will enhance your outdoor kitchen experience…

“A prep sink is invaluable as it centralises your food preparation tasks if you plan to use the space regularly – and view it as a true, second kitchen,” says Grossman. “It’s also worth adding an outdoor fridge.”

Plenty of storage and counter space are essential, she highlights. “You’ll need space to prep your ingredients and store a second set of utensils, pots, pans, and BBQ equipment.

“Avoiding the hassle of moving items between indoor and outdoor kitchens is important, so ensure everything is conveniently accessible and ready for immediate use.”

Design

With all the essentials covered, you can focus on the design element of the space…

“Having some sort of cover for your outdoor kitchen is essential with unpredictable weather, and will ensure you can use the space all year round.

“Adding heating will mean you can use the space into the autumn and winter, to cook winter warmers al fresco.”

She continues: “Cosy outdoor cushions, warm blankets, patio heaters, or even a firepit will keep you toasty when entertaining.”

“Seating is also incredibly important – you’ll want something which is comfortable, can seat all your guests, but still act as an intimate area when it’s just the family.”

Weatherproof fabrics have greatly improved, says Grossman, so you won’t need to constantly take cushions on and off. “Throw cushions will tie all the colours together, and can even co-ordinate the flowers in your garden.”

Adding a well-placed outdoor rug and decorative lighting will bring the whole space together to create a true outdoor dining experience, highlights Grossman.

“When it comes to lighting, though you might be tempted by solar, come the winter you’ll be sat in darkness, so a selection of electrical lighting will mean you can use the space throughout the year,” she advises.

Storage shouldn’t be overlooked either. “Not just for your cooking equipment but for plates, cutlery and frequently used table decorations.

“Having everything readily accessible will encourage you to use the space more often, and prevent you from having to constantly transport items from house to garden – and back again.”

An outdoor kitchen can truly become a dream space – and will expand your home’s living area, highlights Grossman. “Plan well, spend wisely, and you’ll be well on your way to creating your dream outdoor kitchen.”

Celebrate the Paris Olympics with Manon Lagrève’s Truffle Croque Monsieur recipe

The classic French dish originated in Paris, where the Olympics is taking centre stage.

All eyes are on France and the Paris 2024 Olympics, which kicked off in July.

While the athletes will be carefully watching their diets to maximise their performances, the rest of us can celebrate the Games by indulging in a bit of Parisian cuisine.

“When I think about Paris, I think about the time when I lived there, eating a ‘formule du midi’ lunch or a croque monsieur on a terrace at a café, simply living ‘la belle vie’.”

According to French newspaper Le Monde, the croque monsieur is a classic Parisian dish – first served in 1910 in a cafe on the Boulevard des Capucines.

“France has an exciting summer ahead and I am looking forward to seeing our lovely French culture shine,” says home cook and author Manon Lagrève, who comes from Brittany and was a quarter finalist in the 2018 series of The Great British Bake Off.

BELOW

“The thing about French food is that it is all about elevating simple dishes using basic seasonal ingredients. I grew up watching my mum and grandmas cooking mostly everything from scratch in their farm kitchen, and today I do the same in my London kitchen,” says Lagrève.

“I still make that croque monsieur, adding some truffle Boursin for that extra ‘je ne sais quoi’, which takes me back to the feeling of dining on a Parisian terrace.”

Truffle Croque Monsieur

(MAKES 4, OR SERVES 8 AS SMALL BITES)

INGREDIENTS

1 large sourdough bread, thinly sliced

100g Boursin Truffle

100g salted butter, softened

200g champignon de Paris mushrooms, thinly sliced

4 slices of Serrano ham (or Parma ham)

Ground pepper

For the vinaigrette (to make a jar):

3tbsp red wine vinegar

1tbsp salt + 1tbsp pepper

1tbsp wholegrain mustard

5tbsp virgin vegetable oil

4tbsp olive oil

2tbsp water

For the croque sauce topping:

20g butter

20g plain flour, sieved

250ml milk

1tsp of Dijon mustard (optional)

50g Truffle Boursin

Mixed leaves to serve

1. In a large pan, cook the champignon de Paris for five minutes until softened and set aside.

2. To make one croque monsieur, take two thin slices of the bread and butter each side.

3. Add a quarter of the Boursin (you can use a fork and a bowl to soften it before spreading) on top of both slices, top one slice with a quarter of the mushrooms, a slice of Serrano ham and close the croque monsieur with the other Boursin buttered slice.

4. Bring the same pan to medium to high heat and place the croque in the middle. Cook for three minutes on each side or until golden, using a spatula to push it down and cook thoroughly.

5. Slice in two (or in four or six if served as bites).

6. To make the sauce topping, heat the milk in a small pan. Meanwhile melt the butter in another pan and stir in the flour until cooked through and paste-like in consistency. Gradually add the warm milk to the paste a little at a time, whisking continuously.

7. Once you have a thick sauce remove from the heat and stir in 50 grams of the Boursin and the mustard if using.

8. Spread the sauce over the top of the croque monsieur, crumble over some of the remaining Boursin and grill until bubbling and golden. Serve with the salad and vinaigrette that you’ve put together in a jar.

Secret wild swimming spots to cool off in as the UK sizzles

With summer in full swing, why not ditch crowded beaches in favour of wilderness lakes and pools, says Sarah Marshall.

There are multiple benefits to cold water and wild swimming. Beyond helping to shape a healthy mind and body, taking a bracing dip is also an excellent way to cool down.

With a heatwave finally about to sweep the UK, coastlines are likely to be packed with crowds. Shun sea and sand for lochs, lakes and quiet rivers instead, to discover some equally refreshing and far more enchanting spots for a paddle.

Llyn Padarn, Snowdonia, Wales

Few swimming spots hit the Instagram jackpot like this one. Loved by photographers for it’s ‘lonely tree’, Welsh lake Llyn Padarn lies on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park close to the village of Llanberis. Designated as a bathing area, its water quality is monitored throughout summer. A pontoon in Y Glyn also provides easy access for those nervous about tiptoeing over rocks. Swim between swans as sunlight dances around the surrounding mountain slopes.

Stay at the Black Boy Inn, a 20-minute drive away. Rooms from £123; black-boy-inn.com.

Glen Dye Estate, Aberdeenshire

Sitting below the shadow of Clachnaben mountain, in a gorge backed by pine forest, is one of the UK’s top peat river swims. This section of the River Dye, in Aberdeenshire’s 15,000-acre Glen Dye Estate, can easily be reached by a short trail connected to a main footpath.

Stay in a choice of cabins, cottages, a bothy or a small campsite – all with wood-fired hot tubs. A resident Wild Wellness specialist can provide tuition on cold water bathing and breathing techniques.

From £175 for a B&B room in The Coach House; glendyecabinsandcottages.com.

Cairngorms, Scotland

The late Queen Elizabeth II loved escaping to the Cairngorms in Scotland. While she was often seen riding horses on bridleways, there are no reports of HRH wild swimming (although with so many hidden spots to choose from, it’s likely we’d never know!).

A good base for water babies is the Dell of Abernethy, a family-owned collection of six self-catering lodges and cottages neighbouring the national park and within easy reach of seven lochs. Watch sunrise over nearby Loch Garten as roe deer shuffle in the bushes and golden eagles glide overhead.

From £160 per night for a two-person cottage; thedellofabernethy.co.uk.

Elmore Court Estate, Gloucestershire

For tentative dippers yet to make a splash in the wilds, there are options for easy swims without the crowds. Located in Elmore Court on Gloucestershire farmland, a spring-fed lake surrounded by oak trees is the home of Rewild Swim Club. Get changed in a yurt warmed by a wood-fired stove before making a splash, followed by a relaxing recovery in a traditional sauna.

Book a drop-in session (£18 for 1.5 hours) or private experience and stay at the Earth Treehouse on the Rewild Things Estate. From £250 per night; canopyandstars.co.uk.

Inside Olympian Dina

Asher-Smith’s stylish home

Finding peace in her home gives the sprinter the energy to succeed on the track.

Team GB sprinter Dina Asher-Smith might be one of Britain’s fastest women, but when she gets home she likes to relax and slow down.

The last few months have been a whirlwind of intense training for Asher-Smith in the led up to Paris 2024, so her house has become an important place for her to unwind.

So what does a top athlete’s home look like?

The 28-year-old opened her doors to ELLE Decoration to show off the calm interiors and muted colour palette that she comes home to after a hard day on the track.

Talking to the magazine about the reasons behind her interior choices, she said: “‘I wanted it to feel zen, like I was in a spa, and natural. I like a calm palette but I wanted there to be injections of colour and personality, whether through texture and shape or tone and depth.”

The three-time Olympian has worked closely with British paint and wallpaper manufacturer Farrow & Ball to add warmth and interesting details across her house.

The brand’s Carte Blanche range by US fashion designer Christopher John Rogers adds hint of colours to her living space.

Asher-Smith describes her thoughtfully designed home as a “labour of love”, saying it has taken her four years to get it exactly right.

The wooden furnishings, contemporary artworks and carefully chosen ornaments highlight the runner’s exquisite taste and keen eye for detail.

The athlete, who will be representing Team GB in Paris in the 100m, 200m and the women’s 4X100 relay, says creating a peaceful atmosphere at home has helped her get in the right mindset for these intense races.

“I want to come home and totally forget that there might be these incredible things that could happen,” said the sprinter.

“When you’ve got that environment and that internal peace it gives you so much more energy to convert into fantastic performances, speed and power in front of a stadium of 80,000 people.”

Dina
Dina Asher-Smith’s

Asher-Smith has won many accolades during her career, most notably a gold World Championships medal in the 200m in 2019 when she became Great Britain’s first female sprinter to win a World Championship gold, and two Olympic bronze medals for the 4x100m relay.

However, she doesn’t like to have her accolades out on display.

“I’m not one of those athletes that has a shrine to themselves,” she said. “I normally keep my medals in a safe…it sometimes takes me a while to realise that my mum has run off with my Olympic medal!”

The full feature can be found in the September issue of ELLE Decoration which is on sale now.

Discover the Greek Caribbean on these idyllic islands

There are 227 holiday islands to choose from – but which one is right for you?

A firm favourite with sun-loving travellers, the Greek Islands are a summer paradise of silky white beaches, warm seas and excellent traditional food.

A good ferry service makes it easy to hop between different locations, squeezing several mini holidays into one. But it would be impossible to join every floating dot.

Picking the right place to visit depends largely on individual preference, with options to suit all desires and needs. If you are still stuck for inspiration, try one of the islands listed below.

Corfu Old Town | Alamy/PA
Lake Melissani cave on Kefalonia | Alamy/PA
Kythnos | Alamy/PA

PAXOS

Best for being off the radar

The absence of direct flights has arguably saved this unspoilt island from mass tourism; to get there requires a short boat ride from Corfu.

There are three main towns to explore – easily done in a week – and plenty of tavernas and bars line the crowdfree pebble beaches. Hire a boat to access private coves or head over to the powdery beaches of Antipaxos if you have a hankering for sand between your toes.

STAY: Scott Williams Villas (scottwilliams.co.uk; 01749 812721) offers the blow-out five-bedroom Paxos Beach House from £2,884pp (10 sharing), including daily housekeeping and the services of a cook (ingredients payable locally). Fly to Corfu with airlines including BA and easyJet, and take the hydrofoil (€35pp each way).

KYTHNOS

Best for embracing tradition

Time moves slowly on this lesser known Cycladic island, known for its superb sunsets, friendly local fishing communities and exceptional hiking routes. Unravel the past at several archaeological sites: visit the 2,500-yearold city of Vryokastro, explore a 10,000-year-old prehistoric settlement, and uncover the remains of the Byzantine Oria Castle.

There are numerous places to relax too. Take a dip from one of several pristine, untouched beaches or head to the Katafiki cave, one of the largest in Greece.

STAY: Headwater (headwater.com; 01606 720199) offers the six-night self-guided Walking on Kythnos Island tour from £1,229pp, including flights, B&B accommodation, transfers and activities. Departures in September and October.

CORFU

Best for idyllic nostalgia

Loved by literary giants Gerald and Lawrence Durrell, there’s a lot to write home about from this postcardperfect island. Although mass market resorts have sprung up in some areas, it’s still possible to dodge the crowds and find a quiet spot to unwind below the shade or cypress-dotted hills.

There are more than 60 sandy beaches to explore and numerous fishing villages, including Kalami Bay where you’ll find Lawrence Durrell’s whitewashed house, which is now a waterfront restaurant. After a dip in the water, enjoy a splash of colour in UNESCOlisted Corfu Old Town, decorated with pastel-coloured Venetian architecture.

STAY: TUI (tui.co.uk) offers a seven night all-inclusive stay at Kerkyra Blue Hotel & Spa from £759pp, including flights and transfers.

KEFALONIA

Best for beautiful backdrops

Lapped by emerald waters and kissed by cobalt seas, all Greek islands are attractive – but there’s something extra special about the largest of the Ionians. From mountain tops to valley floors, it’s packed with natural wonders.

Paddle across a lake inside a cave at Melissani, watch mesmerising sunsets from the west coast village of Assos, and swim with loggerhead turtles from beaches in the south. And it’s not just the sun that sparkles. Look out for goats with golden teeth – a strange phenomenon caused by munching on inorganic metals on the island’s soil.

STAY: Ionian Holidays (ionianislandholidays.com) offers seven night at the two-bedroom self-catering Throisma Villa with pool in Assos from £1,309pp (four sharing), including car hire, transfers and flights.

Disney’s Aladdin

An interview w h the ars of Aladdin, coming to May ower eatre

As Aladdin embarks on a UK tour, we sat down with Gavin Adams (Aladdin), Desmonda Cathabel (Jasmine), and Yeukayi Ushe (Genie) to delve into their experiences, challenges, and what audiences can expect from this enchanting production.

What are audiences in store for when they come see Aladdin?

Yeukayi Ushe: They can expect a night of Broadwaystyle glitz, glamor and magic with true heart. The dedication of everybody involved in this company is going to ensure that this production is a magical night that you are not going to forget in a hurry.

Gavin Adams: They’re in for a show full of laughter, tears and perhaps nostalgia if like me they’ve seen the movie growing up. They’re in for a lot of shiny things, glitz and glamour, and a lot of comedy. Basically it’s just a fun night out.

How would you sum up your characters, and can you relate to them in any way?

Gavin Adams: Aladdin is an underdog who wants more from his life. He’s a man of the street. He’s scrappy, charming, cunning, courageous and more importantly he has a heart of gold, which is why everyone other than Jafar and Iago love him. I can relate to his physicality and his boyish nature. He’s also quite cheeky and I can sometimes be quite cheeky too. In terms of his nature, he’s very loving and he just wants to make everyone happy, and I think I try to embody that as much as I can.

ABOVE

Gavin Adams | Photo credit Deen Van Meer

Desmonda Cathabel: Jasmine is fierce, she knows what she wants, she won’t settle for less and she’s very sure of herself, which I really like. Jasmine is very strong-willed and, as I say, she goes for what she wants for herself, and I think I’m the same. Once I know what I want and what I need to do to get it, I’ll just try my best to go for it. Like me, she is relentless in a very good way.

Yeukayi Ushe: Genie is this magical being who is full of sunshine, wit, energy and vibrance. I can only hope to live up to the massive list of incredible people who have played the role before me and he’s like nobody I’ve ever played before myself. He is just so full of energy, so front-footed and so much fun. Hopefully I can relate to his sunshine and warmth. When I enter a room, I try to be that person who people can come up to and talk to. He’s like your best friend really and the kind of person who will help you come rain or shine. [Laughs] Obviously I’m not an immortal magical being who lives in a lamp inside a cave but I try to live my life with those values.

BELOW

What attracted you to the show?

Gavin Adams: I grew up watching Aladdin alongside a lot of other Disney movies. Aladdin especially stuck with me because of how relatable it was. so doing the show is such a good opportunity that I just couldn’t say no to. I mean, who wouldn’t want to jump at the opportunity of being a Disney Prince?

Yeukayi Ushe: Genie is a character where you have all of this creative license, all of this comedy and all of these iconic songs that he gets to sing. Having played Simba in The Lion King, to get to play another iconic Disney character is amazing. There is no way that I was going to pass up this opportunity.

Desmonda Cathabel: I feel like I’m very lucky to even to be in the show because I’m playing a very iconic character in a very iconic musical. Everyone knows the story of Aladdin and Disney’s Aladdin especially. It is a part of everyone’s childhood growing up. It’s such an amazing piece of pop culture and I’m really happy to be a part of it.

Yeukayi Ushe | Photo credit Deen Van Meer

Can you recall when you first saw Aladdin and what e ect did it have on you?

Gavin Adams: I think I was about six or seven years old when I first saw the Disney film and I was completely entranced by the story and the magic of it all. It was just such a cool story, then when I found out that it had been made into a theatre production I listened to the music and I was like ‘I have to be a part of it’.

Yeukayi Ushe: The movie came out in 1992 and I’m not gonna give away my age but I watched it when I was younger. I’m a massive Disney fan, so I’ve watched it a fair few times since. Before I knew it was Robin Williams in the movie I was like ‘Is this really just one actor voicing this character?’ I was inspired by his performance and then you’ve got the underdog story of Aladdin as well. It made me think that I can be anything, I can shape shift and do whatever I want. And then the music. My God, the music!

Desmonda Cathabel: I saw the Disney movie during my childhood, along with the other movies featuring the renaissance of Disney Princesses like The Little Mermaid. I remember that Aladdin really stuck with me because it’s so funny, especially Robin Williams as Genie. He’s just so funny and smart and witty, and the film is so magical. Even though I didn’t really know it at the time, Lea Salonga as Princess Jasmine singing A Whole New World was so meaningful. The fact that she is a Southeast Asian musical theatre actress adds another layer of empowerment. I am seeing someone where it’s like ‘Oh my gosh, she’s also Southeast Asian and she is voicing this Disney princess’. That really makes me happy.

ABOVE

Gavin Adams | Photo credit Deen Van Meer

What makes the story relatable to today’s audiences?

Yeukayi Ushe: In terms of representation, with the company and the cast that we have there is somebody on stage that everybody can look at and feel like ‘that could be me’. Then in terms of the story itself, it’s about three main characters - Genie, Aladdin and Jasminewho are all trying to escape the circumstances of their birth. All of them feel trapped and casting our minds back to lockdown, we were all trying to escape in some way, right? The show allows you to dream and it gives you this sense of hope, this sense that anything is possible. It’s a tale that fills you with inspiration, hope, and magic.

Gavin Adams: All of the characters are rooted in truth and I’m sure most people can relate to being the underdog. Most people can relate to wanting more from their life. Most people can relate to romance as well.

Desmonda Cathabel: First of all, the jokes are all so current still. It’s such a funny show that changes with the times and in that way it’s timeless. Then there’s the message of the show, which will always be relevant. People will always connect to it because of the underdog story and the message of being true to yourself and being honest. The idea that things will come to you when you are true to yourself is a universal message that will always be current.

If you could be granted three wishes, what would they be?

Desmonda Cathabel: I would like an unlimited co ee to just appear in front of me whenever I want it. Then I really want to be able to have the ability to teleport, so I can be at rehearsals, then in my bedroom or in a restaurant or back home in Indonesia in the blink of an eye. Maybe a magic carpet is kind of close to that but I want it even faster. Then for my third wish, I’d like free tickets to see all live theatre from the past, in the future and current ones all over the world. I want to see everything!

LEFT
Ensemble | Photo credit Deen Van Meer
RIGHT
Desmonda Cathabel | Photo credit Deen Van Meer

Gavin Adams: Firstly I would love to travel to every single country in the world, to visit all the cultures, eat all the great food and meet all the incredible people that there are around the world. Secondly I would love to have an endless supply of ramen because I love it more than anything in the world. And my third one, which is probably quite niche, is that I would love to be on a show like Whose Line Is It Anyway? The people on there are so intelligent and quick-witted, and I know that if I went on that show I would fall flat on my face. They would end up taking the mickey out of me and I’d love that. I’d be laughing the whole time.

Yeukayi Ushe: I would wish for the ability to eat anything that I wanted with the proviso that wouldn’t gain any weight. I would wish to be able to travel to so many beautiful places across the world without having to queue up and get on a flight; I’d just click my fingers and I’m there. And then lastly, I would wish for my family and my friends to be comfortable and happy.

Don’t miss your chance to experience the enchantment at Mayflower Theatre in Southampton from 5th - 29th September. Book your tickets now for an unforgettable night of Broadway-style glitz, glamour, and pure Disney magic!

How to make Nigella Lawson’s Lemon Dessert Cocktail ‘The Sgroppino’

The Sgroppino is a tangy drink that will transport you to Italy.

Trust Nigella Lawson to bring us the musthave cocktail of the summer. Mixing together the tang of lemon sorbet with refreshing vodka and pizzazz of Prosecco, this drink is summer dessert in a glass.

“This is a very special drinkable dessert which you can whip up in mere moments,” says Lawson, who created the drink with Ocado.

“Moreover, if you make sure to keep the sorbet and vodka stashed in the freezer, and the Prosecco in the fridge, you are ready to deliver near-instant delight to even unplanned guests, infusing last-minute gatherings with sunny spontaneity.”

Lawson says she first tasted this “divine concoction” when she was living in Italy at 19, adding: “This is about creating something heavenly with minimal effort. It’s hard to convey exactly or adequately the wondrousness of a Sgroppino, for these three ingredients combine to create an icy froth that seems neither quite solid nor liquid, but the minute you take your first grateful gulp you will know exactly what I mean.

“More than a frozen cocktail or a drinkable dessert, a Sgroppino is heaven in a glass!”

The Sgroppino

MAKES 1×150ML

INGREDIENTS

100g Remeo Lemon Sorbet

25ml chilled vodka (1 shot)

25ml chilled Prosecco (1 shot)

1. Get a small 150ml coupe or martini glass and a small wide-ish jug. Scoop the lemon sorbet into the jug.

2. Pour over the vodka, followed by the Prosecco. Mix swiftly but gently with a couple of forks, pulling the sorbet apart and into the liquid rather than beating the ingredients together.

3. When you have a lump-free cohesive mixture resembling a cloud of frosty froth, pour into the prepared glass.

4. Raise to your lips and prepare to be transported!

In fact, it can offer all of that in the same week – and potentially even in the same day for those with deep pockets. Los Angeles, the Golden State’s largest city, isn’t all lights-camera-action. And nor is it sunshineall-the-time.

After our 11-hour plus flight from London Heathrow to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) – a film-bingeing transatlantic flight if ever there was one – we are greeted with driving rain that proves that, even when it comes to the weather, the US revels in being OTT.

Taking the saying to heart that there is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing, ponchos are adorned for an escapist day out at Universal Studios, home to a film-inspired theme park and the studios where many of the blockbusters are shot.

Universal makes for a fun way to escape the worst that mother nature has to throw at you, especially if travelling as a family. For those wanting more of an adult-style escape, there are a slew of cocktail bars waiting to be discovered among LA’s skyscrapers.

In better weather, the Walk of Fame pavement stars along Hollywood Boulevard offer a guide to the rich and famous who have graced the city on California’s southern coast. A quick car ride out to the hills provides opportunities for a few selfies with arguably LA’s biggest export – the Hollywood sign. It is doubtful that hike guides will ever bore of telling shocked tourists that it was Mr Playboy himself, Hugh Hefner, who helped restore the dilapidated lettering in the 1970s.

The City of Angels also has a plethora of beaches on its doorstep, but more about those later.

First, we are off for a very different style of escapade some 300 miles away. Cruising east and inland, as Beverly Hills disappears behind us, the minivan carrying our group goes through what can only best be described as John Wayne country as we head on a fivehour journey to Mammoth Lakes where the powdery slopes await.

It is certainly true that Mammoth is not the closest place to LA for skiing – the San Gabriel Mountains are about 90 minutes away and another half-an-hour on is Big Bear Lake – but it is quite possibly the finest.

The drive there alone is stunning. Highway 395 takes its paces across the Mojave Desert before steadily climbing into the Sierra Nevada mountain range, with the temperature dropping with each passing mile.

For those with a penchant for road trips, there is the chance to break it up with a stop-off to learn about one of Hollywood’s favourite backdrops.

A little over three hours from LA is the small town of Lone Pine, home to the Museum of Western Film History, where you can find out about the shoot-outs Clint Eastwood and Humphrey Bogart were involved in along the region’s terrain.

Another two hours on, and the dry habitats of Inyo County give way to the snowy peaks of Mammoth Mountain.

Not only is it one of California’s largest ski resorts, boasting 175 pistes and 25 lifts across 3,500 acres of skiable terrain, its high altitude helps it to revel in regular snow dumps, making the slopes luscious and gleaming.

Our arrival had been preceded by about three metres of snow fall, creating perfect conditions. Locals and guides were still waxing lyrical about the 2022/23 season when the ski gods pumped out so much snow that patrons had to dig themselves out of homes and hotels each morning. The steady snowfall means ski seasons can often run into the summer, ensuring that skiing does not just have to be a winter pursuit.

There are hair-raising black diamond slopes by the plenty towards Mammoth’s peaks for the extreme thrill seekers but, for everyone else, there is an array of weaving green and blue runs that offer the prospect for speed along with serene moments to soak in the stunning view of the range.

“That was nice and cruisy,” our Aussie instructor Lockie enjoys announcing at the end of a particularly scenerysoaked run through the alpine trees.

The town itself leans more towards the “wellness” spectrum than the apres-ski heavy resorts found in Europe, with visitors able to relax in a thermal spring or make time for a massage.

That is not to say booze isn’t part of the equation. Clocktower Cellar, a dive bar with a long line of beer pumps, is there for the basic fix of a pint and a game of pool, while Mexican restaurant Gomez claims to have at least 1,000 bottles of tequila and mezcal behind its counter. Mammoth Brewing Company ensures a taste of something unique, with its seven-glass flights offering a snapshot of its regular beers.

This is where the trip gets fancy. As if by magic, we are back in LA, landing in the titchy airport of Hawthorne Municipal Airport thanks to a one-hour flight on a 30-passenger Dornier 328 jet via Advanced Airlines. It is the perfect short-cut for those with time pressures, with the added bonus of a free shuttle to LAX for those transferring to long-haul flights.

I mentioned those Pacific Coast beaches. Well now we are heading to one, this time swapping the snow for the watery surf at Huntington Beach, less than an hour from Hawthorne.

Huntington has far more to offer than just surfing. Its nine-mile sandy stretch of beach and jutting pier attracts yoga classes, sun-seekers out on rental bikes and hordes of tourists hungry for fish tacos and a mai tai at Duke’s restaurant. But Huntington’s Surf City nickname — it is home to the US Open of Surfing — comes from it being one of the most reliable spots in southern California for waves, drawing surfers out early each morning to catch the choppy morning swash.

For total newbies, surfing tuition is available via a few spots on the beach. It is worth taking the time to research which classes maximise the time in the water before shelling out. Even for beginners who don’t manage to stand up on their surfboard, feeling the sheer power of the waves as you go through the motions will be enough to induce an adrenaline rush.

Not many destinations can brag about offering the chance to pack both a wetsuit and salopettes for a trip, but California ticks both boxes, with plenty of others in between.

BELOW

A surfer at Huntington Beach | Alamy/PA

And for those wanting the double whammy, locals swear an early morning surf, followed by a quick flight inland to Mammoth can result in the completion of a few afternoon slope runs all in a single day.

For adventure hunters, that is a challenge few will be able to turn down.

Labour is in! How will this a ect landlords and the property market? It will certainly be interesting times ahead as Labour promises to go ‘where no man has gone before…’ or ‘refreshes the parts other ‘parties’ could not reach’.

Let’s hope they are able retain one Housing Minister instead of the 16 we had over 14 years under the previous government!

• Will they reach the target of building 1.5m homes in the next five years? The target of 300,000 homes a year has been a target for at least 10 years and has never been reached. Since 2010 there has been 2.2m homes built (an average of 169,000 a year!).

• Will they relax the rules on Green Belt? (now introducing ‘grey belt’)

• Will Interest rates start coming down? (There are already some at below 4%)

We all know that the economy bounces back quicker when the property market is fluid. When the interest rates start falling, the house builders will start building/ finishing o projects on the go. This in turn will create movement in the market.

Over the last six months we have been steadily renting out properties that would normally have gone onto the market to sell, however, they have come to us to rent them out for 12-24 months whilst the market settles. The high Rental prices are here to stay and are definitely settling down. The one thing we can almost rely on is property will always be a great investment!

Marwell Zoo ask the big question this summer - cream or jam first?

This summer we’re opening a tearoom in our historic Grade I listed Marwell Hall and inviting guests of all ages to enjoy a decadent afternoon tea at the heart of Marwell Zoo.

Indulge in freshly prepared sandwiches, warm sausage rolls and elegantly filled wraps before tackling the age-old scone debate – will you spread strawberry jam or clotted cream first?

Handmade cakes and pastries on stands are accompanied by cafetiere coffee or a range of teas beautifully presented in teapots.

Tables dressed with crisp white cloths and elegantly folded napkins await in our charming tearoom with views across our Wild Explorers paddock.

Guests will be able to enjoy their afternoon treat a stone’s throw from where our white rhino, Grevy’s zebra and scimitar-horned oryx graze.

There are also options for children with fun caterpillar and butterfly themed treats, sure to capture their imaginations and keep rumbly tummies at bay.

Sweet and savoury Ella’s Kitchen baby food pouches will also be available for our youngest dining guests.

Vegetarian options are available and there’s a prosecco upgrade for those marking a special occasion, celebrating making it to the end of the week or enjoying something special just because!

The concept of Afternoon Tea can be traced back to the mid19th century shortly after Marwell Hall was refashioned into the building guests see today.

Steeped in history and royal connections Marwell Hall is the perfect setting. Parts of the roof date back to 1320 when the original medieval stone and timber hall was first built. The building has been through several renovation projects over the years but was rebuilt for the last time in 1816 and has stood proudly at the heart of the estate for 700 years.

Guests will need to select whether they’d like to arrive between 1:45pm and 2pm or between 2:15pm and 2:30pm, afternoon

tea will be served every day throughout August. The adults menu will cost £18.95 and the children’s option will be £9.95. Baby food pouches will be available for our youngest guests at £3 each. Upgrading to add prosecco will cost an additional £6 and drinks from the bar will be available at an extra cost.

We’re making Afternoon Tea the icing on the cake of a great day out. Marwell is home to more than 140 different species of animals, five adventure play areas for little ones and 140 acres to explore.

Don’t forget our animal experiences make the perfect gift for special occasions and membership is a great way to support our work throughout the year.

How to perfect the lighting in your home

Because ambient lighting can be a game changer, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

When it comes to decorating, furnishing and the finer details in your home, lighting can sometimes get lost when you’re arranging and artfully placing your prized pieces. Not always considered on the list of priorities, it can sometimes take a back seat.

As Anjelica Delfino, paint & interiors specialist at Valspar Paint points out, it’s not until the house has been lived in for some time that you understand the importance of lighting – and how it can completely transform a space.

Luckily, updating your lighting doesn’t have to be a time-consuming or expensive task, underlines Delfino.

“A few small updates can dramatically transform a home, and there are plenty of ways to do this that are simple, effective and timeless.”

Here, she shares some top tips for all styles and aesthetics…

Directional decorating

“Lighting can have a big impact on the way colour looks in a room, and as natural light changes throughout the day, so will the appearance of the colour.

“Therefore, before deciding on a colour scheme, check which way the room and windows are facing,” advises Delfino.

LEFT

She says you’ll need to paint according to how much light the room will get, as it will look completely different depending on the sun.

“This is especially true, not just for colours, but for tonal choices and whether you opt for warmer or cooler tones is really important.”

Old-school chandeliers

For those looking to embrace authenticity and regal country living, Delfino suggests looking for a couple of statement chandeliers that can take over the focal point of a large, communal room.

“This adds a touch of mood lighting to the room for ambience, and also completely changes the feel of the room with one simple swap. “Shop second-hand for an authentically vintage chandelier.”

Create ambiance

The perfect lighting isn’t just about creating more light in a space, or decorating with lamps – it’s also about changing the mood of the room, says Delfino.

“For a warm and cosy feel, consider adding fairy lights and candles – this works particularly well in gardens and bathrooms.

“Be careful when adding fairy lights to a bedroom or living room as it can look quite young,” she warns.

Depending on your budget and style, she says small, warm-toned wall lamps work well too, if string lighting isn’t your thing.

Small spaces

When it comes to achieving the perfect lighting in a smaller space, the lighter the better, notes Delfino. “Brighter walls are reflective and create an airy, open vibe, which is ideal for small bedrooms, bathrooms or offices.

“Soft whites and creamy colours are the perfect paint palette to maximise your space, and going lighter on wall trims and mouldings makes the walls appear further away, too.”

Adding pale shades of colour also works well in smaller rooms and can still help to bring in natural light, she continues. “Add decorative lamps and multiple small lights, rather than one large light, to enhance the space even further.”

Smoke and mirrors

The addition of mirrors is also a fantastic way to create the illusion of a bigger, lighter space, observes Delfino.

“Mirrors reflect light and bounce it back into the room to keep it bright, and reflecting the view tricks the eye into seeing a larger space than there really is.

“Strategically place mirrors of all shapes and sizes based on where you need some extra light – rather than just where you want to put a mirror.”

Lighting needs layers

As Delfino points out, the ideal source of light for each room in the home, is in fact, three…

“Layering lighting in this way is one of the best tricks to achieve perfect lighting.

“It’s balanced, cohesive and provides homeowners with a few options for light depending on the mood or occasion. These lights can be added to emphasise certain areas of the room, or to take the focus away from other parts too.”

Check the scales

“The important thing about lighting is that it shouldn’t overpower a room, instead it should complement it,” says Delfino.

“The rest of the decor should still be noticeable, and actually enhanced by the lighting in the room.”

She continues: “Poor reflections and shadows can make the design of a room look totally different and mismatched.”

Check the length, height and brightness of a light before adding it to the design of the room, advises Delfino, and make sure it’s first and foremost, complimentary.

Things to do before you start a home renovation 5

It’s all in the forward planning, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

If you’re getting to grips with the dynamics of a renovation – be it altering the layout or an extension –you’re not alone.

According to a recent study by leading home and design platform, Houzz, our enthusiasm for home improvements continues, with nearly half of homeowners in the UK completing a project in 2023.

With this comes careful planning and preparation, regardless of its scope, to achieve your exact needs.

Here, experts share an indispensable guide on what to expect before you embark on a home renovation…

Establish your priorities and do your research “The more time you invest in planning your renovation or design projects before you get started, the better,” says Amanda Pollard, senior editor, Houzz.

RIGHT
Couple reviewing finances for home renovation | Alamy/PA

“Before you charge ahead with renovation plans, consider the needs of everyone in the space, and use that as your starting point when establishing your priorities,” she advises. “From there, you can figure out what’s realistic given your budget constraints.”

It’s helpful to make a list of practical issues that need to be addressed, such as lack of light in a particular room, a corridor that’s too narrow, or a room that’s too cool, says Emilie Mauran, director at EMR Architecture.

“Once you’ve established the must-haves, you can create a mood board to determine the look you want for each space,” says Mauran.

“I encourage my clients to save photos to an ideabook on Houzz that showcases their preferences for joinery, stairs, tiles and even door handles.

“That way, we can decide on these details early on and avoid having to make quick decisions later in the process.”

After you’ve established your priorities, you should sketch out the scope of work envisaged, says Pollard.

“To get a clear picture of exactly the look you want, pull inspiration from online resources.

“Determine which types of professionals you’ll need to hire, research pros in your area and review their portfolios,” she highlights.

Assess your budget

As Pollard points out, in any renovation project there’s a balancing act of controlling your costs while making the most of your investment. “Cost plays a significant role in renovation choices, as evidenced by the 2024 Houzz & Home UK Study, where 68% of respondents said price was a major factor in their decision process.

“To effectively allocate your budget, know how much you have to spend from the outset of a project and add at least 10% as a contingency fund for unexpected costs,” underlines Pollard.

ABOVE

An open-concept living space seamlessly integrates the indoors and outdoors | EMR Architecture/PA

Simon Orchard, owner of Simon Orchard Garden Design says when establishing a budget, it’s critical to educate yourself on realistic project costs, which will likely require an initial conversation with a designer.

“From there, you can start to budget for the whole project, and of course, add in a contingency for costs you may incur throughout the project.”

“I focus on complete transparency when generating quotes,” outlines Orchard.

He continues: “I always give the client a fixed-fee quote at the first stage of the project (a survey of the project and a detailed brief), and the second stage of a project (concepting and master planning).”

Along with that fixed fee at the initial fee proposal stage, he creates an estimate for the latter stages of the project, which include construction drawings and planting plans, which is firmed up once the client approves the masterplan.

Depending on the quote, you may need to make revisions to your scope of work, notes Pollard.

“For example, perhaps you were hoping to re-do your cloakroom along with your kitchen. But since you’ve opted for major structural changes like moving a loadbearing wall or relocating the cooker in your kitchen, you’re willing to wait on the cloakroom.”

Find a contractor

Once you’ve done your initial research, aim to get at least three competitive quotes from contractors, suggests Pollard. “While it’s important to be cost-conscious, bear in mind the lowest price isn’t necessarily going to be the best.”

“You might find the under-priced job is under-specified and little ‘extras’ may appear later, because they weren’t accounted for from the start,” notes Pollard. “Avoid oversights by asking for a highly detailed specification, and making sure the specification is exactly the same for each company you approach.”

Agree on lines of communication

Timely communication between homeowners and contractors is key for a smooth renovation process, so make sure to align on communication expectations before you kick off a project, warns Pollard.

She says to agree on communication channels so you can stay in the loop. “Even better, many contractors use software for sharing real-time information, so their customers can easily access updates and stay on top of project status.”

Alicja Wawrzyniak, director and founder of Alwa Design Studio Ltd, agrees: “Establishing an effective system for client communication is essential for a successful project.

“Houzz Pro tools have been pivotal for not only collaborating with clients, but managing their expectations. Clients have access to real-time information, can comment quickly and easily, and they appreciate the transparency throughout the process.”

Pick your products and materials

Over half of renovating homeowners go over budget because products or services were more costly than expected, according to Houzz research, notes Pollard.

However, by making a list with your contractor early on, she says you can proactively make budget-conscious selections for products, materials, finishes and fixtures.

“Not only will this help you stick to your budget, but it will help keep your project on schedule,” Pollard adds.

MINI COOPER 5-DOOR REVEALED

A few months after the launch of the threedoor, BMW has now launched the five-door MINI Cooper. It comes with a choice of two petrol engines that, BMW say, deliver hallmark MINI go-kart feeling.

The new Cooper 5 Door is almost identical in dimension to its predecessor and offers three trims levels – Classic, Exclusive and Sport – and is priced from £24,050 OTR, with first customer deliveries commencing next month.

Two petrol engines with different designations of C and S are a 154 hp three- cylinder petrol unit with 230 Nm (170 lb/ft) of torque, providing a top speed of 140mph and passing the benchmark 62mph in 8.0 seconds.

The second engine is a 201 hp fourcylinder petrol unit with a maximum torque of 300 Nm (221 lb/ft), acceleration from 0 to 62 mph in 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 150 mph.

Classic, Exclusive and Sport trim levels each offer an array of exterior and interior personalisation options. Classic trim

presents a reduced overall appearance while highlighting key elements such as the MINI wings logo, which is finished in Silver.

Exclusive trim brings further customisation options, adding British Racing Green and all-new Icy Sunshine Blue exterior paint, Vescin Nightshade Blue interior, a dark interior headliner and the front grille in Vibrant Silver. Finally, Sport trim provides Sports Transmission with shift paddles on the steering wheel, a distinctive front and rear design and a rear spoiler with airblades.

Central to the MINI Cooper’s interior is a circular, 24cm OLED display, where all the vehicle’s functions can be operated via either touch or voice control. The upper half of the screen displays vehicle-related information such as speed and important information on vehicle status, while the lower area houses Navigation, Media, Phone and Climate. All other functions can be accessed via the menu with the display returning to the default setting via the home button. The optional head- up display presents the most important information in the driver’s line of sight.

In conjunction with the MINI Connected Package, the full MINI Navigation Package has 3D visualisation of turn situations, a display of the current traffic situations even when route guidance system is not active, and information on parking facilities. Built at the home of MINI, MINI Plant Oxford, the new MINI Cooper 5 Door is priced from £24,050 OTR, with first customer deliveries commencing in August 2024.

SPEED SIX EVOCATION COMPLETES TEST PROGRAMME WITH GOODWOOD FINALE

Bentley’s Speed Six Continuation Series has successfully completed a test and durability programme, whilst debuting at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The car has been meticulously created to the exact specifications of the 1930 Speed Six – and ready to race once again. Car Zero, there will be twelve, has been driven for over 8000 km over varied road conditions, speeds and surfaces at Millbrook Proving Ground.

Scrutineered by Motorsport UK to FIA Appendix K regulations to confirm eligibility for races and trials the all-new 6½-litre

engine has been tested to the limit over two 20-hour continuous bench test cycles. This year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed saw the Bedford Grey 205 bhp ‘Factory Works’ car – the second of two development cars - complete eight separate runs up the famous Goodwood hill climb without any hesitation or concern. This achievement marked the last significant shakedown activity in the development of the car.

Car Zero, the main engineering test prototype of the Speed Six Continuation Series, has passed a gruelling series of tests on the dyno and racetrack, both with flying colours. Work now will be trimmed and finished to its owner’s specifications from a choice of period-correct finishes

and materials. The 6,597cc straight six engine of the original Speed Six was designed by W.O. Bentley and powered the most successful Bentley race car of the Cricklewood era (1921-31). In period it developed around 200 brake horsepower, and the Bentley team has been at pains to follow the original specification and drawings exactly, creating the first brand new Speed Six engine in nearly 100 years from over 600 new components including engine block. Work on the first Speed Six customer cars is now under way at Bentley Mulliner Classic, with the first delivery scheduled for autumn.

According to Ben Linde, Mulliner Special Project Leader, “The Speed Six was the pinnacle of Bentley race engineering of the 1920s,” he notes. “You could drive it to Le Mans, race for 24 hours, then drive home again with the winner’s trophy on the back seat. The Speed Six Continuation Series captures that spirit in a way that is faithful to the tools, techniques and engineering drawings of the time.”

MAZDA CX-60 – VERY IMPRESSIVE AND ECONOMICAL SUV LUXURY

When asked about large, luxury SUVs most people will always mention Range Rover (of course), Audi and BMW. Think about the Range Rover Velar, BMW X3 and Audi Q5. Well, there is an overlooked rival here, and bear with me, it’s from Mazda. The CX-60 meets all the criteria, it’s large, it’s luxury and it can come with all-wheel-drive.

It may be somewhat subdued on the looks front when compared to a Range Rover or German rivals but sometimes discreet is good. It’s one of those kind of cars where those that know, know, and not least because it’s full of standard equipment, extremely well bolted together, has a feeling of premium quality and in diesel form has a superb 6-cylinder in-line straight six engine. There’s also the CX-80 to come shortly which is effectively a larger version that has more seating options.

Now I don’t dispute that those in search of badge one-upmanship will gravitate towards more well-known premium motors and dismiss my comparison, but the Mazda

is more about value for money luxury. Both in terms of running costs and the initial purchase price the Mazda offers an affordable touch of quality.

These days some may baulk at the option of diesel power, but Mazda has always supplied excellence in its engineering and the e-Skyactive D engine comes with mild hybrid assistance, excellent economy and low emissions. It also performs well, not that the CX-60 is the kind of vehicle you’ll be piloting at speed across twisting crosscountry roads, but in its most powerful

diesel form it reaches the benchmark 62 mph in just 5.8 seconds.

In my view in-line straight six engines always return superb driver feedback and the Mazda is no exception. The 8-speed automatic transmission is a smooth affair and the engine seems to offer endless reserves of ‘pull’ and in 254PS form provides 550Nm of torque.

It seemed to me impossible to not find a comfortable driving position in the CX60 and the interior is not only of superb quality but provides buttons rather than the endless touch screen mania that seems to prevail nowadays. My only real niggle is that the overall ride quality is sometimes compromised over rougher surfaces, but I suspect most would not even notice such minor imperfections.

Priced from £45,370, if you want an affordable touch of luxury SUV on your drive then the CX-60 is well worth a drive. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

ASTON MARTIN 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF GOLDFINGER WITH

007-INSPIRED SECRET EXPERIENCE

Aston Martin held a highly successful pop-up secret experience inside London’s prestigious Burlington Arcade, created to celebrate 60 years of Aston Martin’s long-running association with the 007 film franchise. The relationship began with the 1964 release of Goldfinger, the film which introduced James Bond to the now iconic DB5.

Launched alongside V57, a special James Bond anniversary edition of Aston Martin’s luxury lifestyle magazine, the House of Q by Aston Martin was accessed through a secret door within what appeared to be a magazine newsstand inside House 12-13 Burlington Arcade.

Covert messages led guests through a secret door where visiting agents discovered a speakeasy bar serving Champagne Bollinger. The bar was adorned with technical drawings and parts from the original DB5 with sketches, diagrams and schematics from the archives of both Aston Martin and EON Productions. There was also a top-secret Q flight case, along with hints at a future Aston Martin model, for those able to uncover it.

The DB5 is the car that established Aston Martin as one of Britain’s most desirable luxury brands, quickly becoming one of the ultimate status symbols of the Swinging Sixties. First launched in September 1963, DB5 had a potent 4.0-litre engine and a top speed exceeding 150mph.

Its styling, courtesy of Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera, created a sophisticated design, which when matched with its performance produced a car that people dreamed of owning. When DB5 was chosen to be in Goldfinger, laden with gadgets to help Bond fight his archenemy Auric Goldfinger, its iconic status was sealed forever.

The Bond theme was carried into every detail at the House of Q by Aston Martin where guests had a chance to see the original Goldfinger script, film posters and set photography.

From Burlington Arcade’s inception in 1819, it has positioned itself as an exclusive shopping destination for luxury brands which fitted perfectly with Aston Martin.

Achieve timeless beauty with Elegant Clinic’s Botox solutions

Expert Botox treatments for a refreshed and rejuvenated look

At Elegant Clinic, we understand that aging gracefully is a priority for many. As time progresses, our skin can show signs of wear, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity. To help our clients combat these changes, we are excited to share the latest news about our Botox treatments. Learn about Botox, how it works, and our comprehensive rejuvenation packages designed to meet the unique needs of mature skin, alongside our spotlight

BOTOX

As we age, our skin inevitably shows signs of wear and tear. Fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity are some of the most common concerns. For those looking to mitigate these e ects, Botox has become a popular option. Our client in the pictures (left) has had her frown, eyes, lips and chin treated. The outcome is a fresher eye and over all appearance without looking ‘done’.

What is Botox?

Botox, or botulinum toxin type A, is a neurotoxin derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In cosmetic applications, it is used in very small, controlled doses to temporarily paralyse muscles.

This paralysis prevents the muscles from contracting and forming wrinkles, especially those caused by repetitive facial movements such as frowning, squinting, or raising eyebrows.

How does Botox work?

When injected into specific areas of the face, Botox blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. As a result, the targeted muscles can no longer contract as forcefully, causing the wrinkles to relax and soften.

The e ects typically become noticeable within a few days and can last for three to six months, depending on factors like the individual’s skin type, the area treated, and the dosage used.

REJUVENATION

Botox rejuvenation packages for mature clients are designed to address the specific needs of aging skin, o ering a tailored approach to reduce wrinkles and restore a youthful appearance.

These packages include a series of Botox injections strategically administered by Shikha, to smooth out fine lines and deeper wrinkles, particularly around the forehead, eyes, and mouth.

By targeting the underlying muscles that cause these lines, Botox helps to create a more relaxed and refreshed look. Often combined with other treatments like dermal fillers or skin resurfacing, these packages provide a comprehensive solution to aging, enhancing the overall texture and firmness of the skin while maintaining a natural and vibrant look.

Buddy Oliver’s top tips for giving kids kitchen confidence

Jamie Oliver’s son is taking on the food world, with a new book and CBBC show getting children into cooking.

He’s got one of the most recognisable last names in food, and now Buddy Oliver is striking out on his own with a new cookbook.

At 13, the son of industry legend Jamie Oliver isn’t exactly a new face in the world of food. His YouTube channel, Cooking Buddies, has a mammoth 135k subscribers, and has seen him whipping up meals on camera for as long as three years ago – with friends and, of course, his famous father.

Oliver says cooking is “one of my all-time favourite things to do (alongside rugby, of course!)” so it’s perhaps no surprise he’s following in his father’s culinary footsteps.

He is the second-youngest in the Oliver clan – parents Jools and Jamie married in

a church ceremony in Essex in July 2000 and have four other children – Poppy, Daisy, Petal and River.

Oliver’s debut cookbook, Let’s Cook, is aimed at getting children in the kitchen with colourful, fun and simple recipes. Dishes range from staples like the ultimate burger and meatballs with spaghetti, to vegetarian options including tomato soup and greens pasta, as well as the obligatory sweet treats like rocky road.

The book is coming out alongside his new show, Cooking Buddies, which starts on July 10 on CBBC and BBC iPlayer. The series sees him swap skills with young friends –teaching them cooking while they show him something they’re good at, whether that’s salsa dancing or ice skating.

“Let’s Cook is full of the things I love to cook and eat. It’s not fancy or hard to do, it’s just simple food done nicely,” Oliver says, a food ethos that sounds rather familiar.

Oliver says he’s “always been involved in cooking at home – I can’t remember not being! But, I must have been around four when I properly started making bigger things, rather than just helping with a bit of prep.

“Me and Dad have always cooked breakfast together at weekends, as this is when we have a bit more time.”

Jamie

Aside from breakfast, Oliver says: “I love cooking fish with Dad. We almost always have fish on a Saturday – quite often mackerel. I’ve learnt to fillet it, and it feels really cool to be able to take a whole fish, prep it, cook it and serve it up for the rest of the family.”

If your kids are looking to build up a bit of confidence in the kitchen, these are Oliver’s top tips…

Start small

“Start small, and build on the recipes you choose,” is Oliver’s main piece of advice. “The more I learnt, the more I wanted to explore, so the same will probably be true for you.”

The first dish he learned to make was something super simple: scrambled eggs, which he says were “really tasty, and actually quite easy once I knew what to do”.

Oliver also assisted his parents in the kitchen – this way, he says: “I started to pick up new skills, like how to make chopped salads or simple pizza and bread doughs, and it kind of went from there”.

Learn new skills

Cooking is all about building blocks –learning core skills that will help you across a range of recipes.

That’s why Oliver recommends picking up basic techniques and recipes first: “Things like how to cook perfect rice or how long to cook a jacket potato for, as well as how to make your own simple flatbreads or oneingredient pasta.”

Because “once you’ve cracked them”, he adds, “They’ll stay with you forever!”

Embrace unpredictability

It can be easy to feel disillusioned in the kitchen if something doesn’t quite turn out how you wanted it.

But even if things don’t go to plan, Oliver says that “doesn’t matter”, and your best bet is “try to not think about it too much”.

He adds: “Sometimes you’ll end up with something even better than planned, and other times it’ll just give you an idea of what not to do next time. It’s all part of the journey!”

Have fun

Ultimately, Oliver says: “Roll up your sleeves, get stuck in, and most importantly… have fun!”

According to the budding foodie, there are plenty of reasons for kids to get into cooking – namely that you can “tweak and adjust things to make them exactly how you like them”, so you’ll “always want to eat it”.

And then when you’ve mastered the skills, Oliver says: “It’s good not always having to rely on grown-ups when you’re hungry.”

1 heaped tsp tomato purée

450g your favourite dried pasta

Parmesan cheese, to serve

INGREDIENTS

Olive oil, for greasing

100g dark chocolate (70%)

100g quality milk chocolate

125g unsalted butter

75g golden syrup

50g marshmallows

150g biscuits, such as ginger nuts, digestives

75g unsalted nuts, such as pistachios, toasted hazelnuts

75g glacé cherries or dried fruit

1. Place a large casserole pan on a medium-high heat to warm up. Squeeze the sausagemeat out of the skins. Drizzle one tablespoon of olive oil into the pan, add the minced beef and sausagemeat, breaking everything up with a spoon as you go, then cook for five minutes, stirring regularly.

2. Peel the onions and garlic, trim the carrot, celery and courgette, then coarsely grate all the vegetables on a box grater, finely grating the garlic. Scrape into the pan, then reduce the heat to medium-low asnd cook for 10 minutes, or until soft and sweet, stirring occasionally.

3. Add the balsamic vinegar, then scrunch in the tomatoes (or tip in and break up with a spoon as you go). Half-fill each tin with water, swirl around to pick up the last bits of tomato and pour it into the pan. Stir in the tomato purée and a pinch of black pepper, mash everything up with the spoon, then reduce the heat to low and leave to cook for one hour, or until thickened slightly.

4. About 15 minutes before you’re ready to serve, cook the pasta in a large pan of boiling salted water according to the packet instructions, then drain, reserving a mugful of starchy cooking water.

5. Carefully add the pasta to the sauce and stir well over the heat, loosening with a splash of pasta water, if needed. Divide between serving bowls, and finish with a good grating of Parmesan.

Rocky road

SERVES 16

1. Lightly oil a 25 centimetre x 30 centimetre roasting tray and line it with a sheet of damp greaseproof paper.

2. Sit a heatproof bowl on top of a pan of lightly simmering water, snap in the dark and milk chocolate, add the butter and golden syrup, and stir occasionally until melted.

3. Halve the marshmallows, snap up the biscuits, roughly chop or bash up the nuts, bash up the honeycomb and halve the cherries or dried fruit (if needed), then stir them into the chocolate mixture.

4. Pour into the lined tray and chill in the fridge for at least four hours, then carefully turn out.

5. Snap the white chocolate into a clean heatproof bowl and melt as described in step two (or melt in the microwave, if easier). Drizzle the melted chocolate over the rocky road, leave to set in the fridge, then slice up and serve.

Fish finger sarnies SERVES

4

INGREDIENTS

4 sweet potatoes (800g total)

1tsp smoked paprika

Olive oil

25g plain flour

1 large free-range egg

1–2 thick slices of wholemeal bread (roughly 80g)

Optional: 15g Cheddar or Parmesan cheese

4 x 120g white fish or salmon fillets, skin off, pin-boned, from sustainable sources

2tbsp tomato ketchup

4 heaped tbsp natural yoghurt

1 little gem lettuce

4 submarine rolls

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C. Scrub the sweet potatoes clean, slice each one into chunky chips (use a crinkle-cut knife, if you’ve got one), then tip them on to a large baking tray.

2. Season lightly with sea salt, black pepper and the smoked paprika, then drizzle over one tablespoon of olive oil and toss to coat. Spread out in a single layer on the tray and bake for 35 minutes, or until golden and cooked through.

3. Sprinkle the flour on to a plate and beat the egg in a shallow bowl. Whiz the bread in a food processor with the cheese (if using), two tablespoons of olive oil and a pinch of salt and pepper until fine, then tip on to a baking tray. Line a second tray with greaseproof paper.

4. Carefully slice each fish fillet in half lengthways (it doesn’t matter if they’re slightly different shapes). Turn each one in the flour until evenly coated, dip into the egg, letting any excess drip off, then turn in the breadcrumbs until well-coated all over. Transfer to the lined tray (at this stage you can freeze the fish fingers, so feel free to double up and have some extras for another day).

5. When the chips have 15 minutes to go, add the tray of fish fingers to the oven until golden and cooked through (cook them for 20 minutes if cooking straight from frozen).

6. Mix the ketchup and yoghurt together to make a kinda Marie Rose sauce, trim and finely shred the lettuce, and slice the rolls in half. Load up the bases of the rolls with a spoonful of the sauce and a handful of shredded lettuce, then place two fish fingers on each one, and pop the lids on. Serve the sweet potato chips alongside.
