ZILDJIAN YOUNG DRUMMER OF THE YEAR
The beat goes on as Lighthouse Poole hosts the Zildjian Young Drummer of the Year 2025 on Sunday 16 February.
The event, now in its 23rd year, has been staged at Lighthouse since 2023 and is the brainchild of professional drummer Mike Dolbear, best known for coordinating the spectacular Pandemonium Drummers –a thousand-strong drum corps – as part of the opening ceremony for the 2012 London Olympics.
“It’s a competition because there’s a winner, but it’s much more than that,” he says. “It’s a full live show that celebrates the amazing musical creativity of young people in this country.”
The judges are only revealed on the day but previous panels have included superstars such as Nick Mason (Pink Floyd), Stewart Copeland (The Police), Ian Paice (Deep Purple), Matt Helders (Arctic Monkeys),
LIGHTHOUSE POOLE
www.lighthousepoole.co.uk
Cherisse Osei (Simple Minds), Sarah Jones (Harry Styles), and the late Aaron Spears (Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus).
Previous winners have gone on to forge stellar careers in music – most notably perhaps Stormzy drummer Matty Brown –and last year’s winner Jared Agyekum hit the headlines when it was revealed he had never owned a drum kit.
There are ten finalists, all under 16, each playing one of three kits arranged onstage. They draw lots for the running order on the morning of the final and are then isolated from each other’s performances with no access to phones or social media. Each finalist faces three challenges – a two-minute drum solo, followed by their response to an original piece of music recorded for the final, before joining a band on stage and playing another original track they will have heard for the first time that day.

Renters rights bill update
This received its third reading in the House Of Commons in January with 440 MP voting for and 111 against. It then passed the first stage in the Lords and will be debated at the second reading in the Lords on the 4th February. There were a couple of amendments on restricting rent in advance and the role of a guarantor.
The proposed amendment to rent in advance is to be capped to a maximum of one month. This will have an impact on landlords accepting tenants who may not pass referencing in the normal way and accept the added security of rent in advance. The amendment is also suggesting a £5,000 fine by the local
authority if a landlord is found to have taken more than one month in advance.
The proposed amendment for guarantors is to cap their obligation to pay any rent in the event the tenant does not pay the rent to six months. They are also looking to amend their responsibility in the event of the tenant dying.
These and others will be debated, but will have consequences where landlords prefer the additional security of a rent in advance or guarantor, when a tenant may not be able to proceed due to bad credit, not enough income, self employed people without 3 years accounts etc.
GOVERNMENT’S DOUBLE STANDARDS WITH SECTION 21!
You seriously couldn’t make this up! The Renters Reform Bill was originally brought in by the Conservative Party and the Labour have continued with this and changed the heading to the Renters Rights Bill. Part of which, the Section 21 has always been on the agenda to ban as they feel it is used to easily by landlords and not fair on tenants. In fact Angela Raynor said she felt Section 21 evictions were a contributing factor to the homelessness!
And yet… The Daily Telegraph has reported that a Labour run council, ‘Lambeth Council’ to be precise has used the Section 21 to nearly 200 people before the bill comes in, to gain the properties back –how can this not be classed as double standards! It will be very interesting to see if they recommend these families to stay put until they have received a court order or bailiff as we all know that is what they usually say and that if they move out prior it would be classed as making themselves voluntarily homeless!
RENTERS RIGHT BILL
EPC UPDATE
The previous government wanted to impose and EPC rating of C on all rented properties from 2025 for new tenancies and 2028 for existing tenancies, this was put on hold in 2023. Labour are looking to re-introduce this to take affect from 2030!
IN THE COURTS
HMO’s have become increasingly popular over the years, especially those that have decorated to a high standard, giving almost hotel standard rooms with en-suites. The landlord undoubtably receives more money than renting the property out as a whole and tenants are able to rent lovely rooms at a much reduced price without very often the added costs of utility bills. BUT… if the landlord is not doing their due diligence regarding Right to Rent checks, HMO licensing rules etc, they can easily fall foul of the law and land themselves with hefty fines, rent repayment orders and struck off for being a landlord in the future. Here are a couple of examples.
£20,000 FINE FOR LANDLORD
A landlord was ordered to pay back to 3 of his tenants a rent repayment order of nearly £20,000 for breach of the HMO licensing rules. This was due to renting to 3 individual people, thus making the property a HMO to which the landlord claimed he was unaware that he needed a license, the property had a Category 1 hazard for excess cold, inadequate fire safety arrangements (required under the HMO License) and one of the rooms being too small. The landlord had claimed ignorance of the rules, to which the judge ruled was not a defence.
£35,000 FINE FOR LETTING AGENT
A Portsmouth letting agency was given a fine of nearly £35,000 and 200 hours of community service, for failing to license multiple properties under the HMO rules. The council became suspicious of overcrowding in the properties and were refused entry by the tenants as they were told by the agency to do. The council then had to gain a warrant from the magistrate court. The director pleaded guilty.
AN OFFER OF ADVICE
We are heading for the major reform in the lettings industry. A good agent will be reading and monitoring and ensuring their clients are safe. It is becoming harder and harder for landlords to self-manage, (unless they consider it their job and regularly attend courses). To be frank, one fine from the council, could easily cost a lot more than if you had engaged an agent to manage the property.
At Move On, we are always attending courses to ensure we are abiding by the rules and safe-guarding our clients. If you have considered looking for an agent, then give me a ring and I will personally happily chat through any concerns or questions you may have.

Pink: From blush to rose, how to make the most of this timeless shade
Pink may be the defining colour for sweetness, love, happiness and romance, but it’s also one of this season’s most trending tones – with dusty pink cited as the new neutral for a contemporary update.
Timeless too, rose coloured interiors are hardly a new aesthetic – it’s been a popular choice for hundreds of years – but this time round it’s with a 21st-century spin for the second quarter.
Striking just the right balance, softer shades of pink sit beautifully with cream, off-whites and warm browns (think Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2025 – Mocha Mousse) as we shift away from those cool greys which have dominated colour charts since the early 2000s.
Add a splash of rose
“Pink is and has always been hugely adaptable in design – from the delicate nudes and pastel shades of the art deco period to more contemporary, bold shades, this welcoming hue offers endless possibilities to home styling,” highlights Helen Shaw, director of marketing (International), Benjamin Moore.
“Nudes and bolder pastels are set to be a standout for this year, with more people looking to use these ‘in between’ hues for a subtle and comforting take on colour.”
Easy on the eye, pink is right on point in home décor, says Sam Wylie-Harris. RIGHT
Benjamin Moore Rosy Blush 2086-30, Countryside Pink 1361, Benjamin Moore Paint | Benjamin Moore Paint/PA
Moreover, she says these more muted shades create a fresh and liveable atmosphere. “Perfect for a sophisticated living room scheme paired with crisp white woodwork, touches of subtle pattern and fluid, sculptural furniture.”
“Alternatively, opt for a playful, more casual take on pink with hand-painted motifs in a monochromatic scheme,” suggests Shaw. “A mid-tone shade across four walls in a living room pairs beautifully with an electric shade of magenta pink flush in a painterly approach, to give a fresh dimension to the space.”
A style tip Shaw shares is to introduce stripes. “A timeless motif that can tie a scheme together when paired with accessories in this pattern such as a stool, rug or cushions.”
Take a futuristic approach
Gisela Lancaster, head of buying at Sofology says: “People are hungry for brighter and bolder living rooms, with saturated pinks delivering design-led cosiness, character and comfort. The living room is without doubt, a place where comfort and style collide, with individuality high on people’s priorities for 2025.”
She says this will translate into bolder colour choices, with many of us leaning into ‘new neutrals’ for our schemes, where a variety of soft pinks complement more experimental creative features such as tiled walls and terrazzo flooring.
“Think Miami brights and slightly more futuristic styling that welcomes light into your home with laidback and playful schemes. Pink creates a much less formal atmosphere whilst staying contemporary and surprisingly warm.”
Consider teaming soft pastels with leafy hues for a calming mix of colours that pay homage to the easy decorative style of America’s East Coast, suggests Lancaster. “And have fun with furniture shaping, embracing soft curves and fluid contours with pared-back silhouettes, combined with graphic lines for contrast.”

Pack a punch with lighting
Lighting experts pin the popularity of pink accent lighting to its versatility – and ability to bring ambient illumination to interiors. “Pink can bring softness, energy, or sophistication to your space, depending on the shade you choose,” says Jo Plant, head of design, Pooky.
“From soothing pastel pinks ideal for bedrooms to vibrant magentas that inject bold personality, there’s a shade to suit every mood and room.”
To add to the aura of a rosy glow, she says the material of your lamp base or shade makes all the difference to the colour. “A pale marshmallow linen shade exudes elegance, while vibrant patterns like pink stripes or paisley bring charm and whimsy.
“Pink glass pendants and chandeliers feel luxurious and delicate, reminiscent of pink champagne.”
On the other hand, a lacquered wooden base in hot pink, creates a bold, modern statement perfect for adding a punch of colour, adds Plant.
Her top tip is to pair pink lighting with neutral palettes for balance and harmony, or mix it with rich tones for an eclectic, dynamic look.
“Just remember, the right shade of pink can enhance your space beautifully, but lighting plays a key role in how it comes to life.
“Natural light softens pink tones, while artificial light can deepen or brighten them, so experiment to find your perfect glow,” suggests Plant.
Weave in natural materials
Using pink as a base colour and incorporating wooden finishes and nature inspired accents creates a coherent colour scheme…
“Pastel pink offers the perfect entry point to incorporate pink into your home without it being overbearing,” says Kellie Wyles, head of upholstery, DFS.
“A pastel pink sofa in a blush offers a soft and sophisticated take on the look and has the power to anchor a living room, particularly when paired with a crisp and contrasting colour on the walls.”
Teamed with the subtlety of natural furniture such as oak coffee tables, stone based lamps and dark wood bookshelves, she says you can then tie the scheme together with subtle nods to pink in smaller furnishings such as rugs, lamps or decorative accessories.
“For those who prefer a maximalist approach, a vibrant watermelon sofa against crisp white walls will create a striking focal point for the room,” recommends Wyles.
She says this also works particularly well for open-plan spaces, with the sofa subtly zoning the space. “
To take this look to the next level, add pops of green, blue and gold in decorative accessories – and a dash of vibrant pattern in wall art, rugs or cushions, to create a joyful yet grown up look.”

I’m Sean Kiani, an Independent Financial Advisor and Estate Planner. With over 25 years of experience in business recovery and insolvency, I specialise in turning complex financial challenges into clear, actionable solutions. Since founding Inheritance Made Simple in 2023, my mission has been to guide clients through the critical steps of securing their future.
Your Legacy, Protected
Let me ask you this: If you were gone tomorrow, would your assets go exactly where you’d want them to?
For many, the honest answer is no. Succession planning isn’t about avoiding the inevitable—it’s about giving your life meaning and your assets purpose.
The reality is simple: tomorrow doesn’t belong to us. Wills, trusts, and lasting powers of attorney are not just documents; they’re shields against uncertainty. They ensure your health and financial affairs are managed with care and precision, even in the face of life’s unexpected challenges.
I take a holistic approach, carefully assessing your unique circumstances and goals. My process involves providing you with a comprehensive report that outlines practical recommendations to achieve your objectives.
One powerful, yet underutilised tool in estate planning is the Limited Liability Partnership (LLP). Unlike trusts or company structures, LLPs allow you to:
• Transfer residential and buy-to-let properties—both in the UK and overseas—without triggering capital gains tax or stamp duty.
• Seamlessly bring family members into ownership.
• Avoid the legal fees, tax pitfalls, and complexity of traditional trusts.
An LLP acts as both a trust and a will— a versatile financial instrument that can protect your legacy for generations.
Property owners: don’t let outdated advice cost you your family’s future. My bespoke approach ensures that every aspect of your estate is carefully planned, documented, and safeguarded.
Call me today on 07479 739139 or visit www.inheritancemadesimple.com to book a consultation.
The choices you make today will define the security of your tomorrow. Let’s make them count.

These are the most affordable holiday destinations in 2025
Spend pennies wisely by booking a break to these affordable holiday spots, says Sarah Marshall
A new year promises fresh beginnings – but it also includes an inevitable rise in prices. But while inflation continues to push up costs in some parts of the world, there are still places where the cost of living is refreshingly low or even falling.
Swap popular, high-demand holiday spots for up-andcoming regions, or take advantage of places where currencies are weak.
Fortunately, there are quite a few options to choose from if you want to save money without compromising on sunshine or the quality of experiences. These are some of the best bargain breaks to consider booking for the year ahead.
Best for beach: El Gouna, Egypt Far cheaper than the Canary Islands but with even higher temperatures and more hours of sunshine, this purpose-built Red Sea beach destination has undergone a large amount of development since the first marinas and artificial islands were constructed in the early 1990s.
Now there are 18 hotels and resorts and more than 100 restaurants and bars lining the 10km of coastline. Recently renovated, the five-star Steigenberger Golf Resort has rooms from £60 per person per night with breakfast – a bargain compared to most winter sun resorts. Due to favourable exchange rates, cocktails cost less than £2 while a meal for two is just over a tenner.
HOW: A four-night B&B break at the adults only Cook’s Club El Gouna from £309 per person including flights. Departs January 13. Visit lastminute.com.
Best for nature: Bosnia and Herzegovina
Born from a history as colourful and complex as its diverse landscapes, this relatively undiscovered Balkan nation only attracts 3.6 million tourists per year – almost six times less than Croatia. Yet the scenery, beaches, food and culture are equally attractive, while prices are much lower.
According to flight aggregate site Skyscanner, capital city Sarajevo has seen the largest drop in airfares across Europe, with new routes recently launched from London Stanstead with Ryanair. Set along the Miljacka River and surrounded by the Dinaric Alps, the city features several museums and historical buildings from eras of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian rule. Further afield, it’s the country’s natural beauty that shines – from the fairytale Kravica Waterfall to the never-ending Tara Canyon which runs into Montenegro.
HOW: Exodus offers a nine-day group walking trip from £1899 per person, excluding flights. Various departures from June to September. Visit exodus.co.uk.
Best for ski: Voss, Norway
A few years back, it would have been inconceivable to see Norway feature on a list of ‘affordable’ destinations. But a drop in the value of the Norwegian krone has made it a more economical and appealing destination to visit – at all times of the year.
Winter tourism to the Nordic country has always been dominated by the northern lights, but glowing reports for the region’s many ski resorts are attracting even more travellers. Located 100km from Bergen, Voss is one of the largest ski resorts in Western Norway with 40km of groomed alpine trails and 24 varied descents, including an international giant slalom course and a SuperG course. Yet it’s far better value than many Alpine winter resorts and promises good powder with the support of snow cannons.
Being so far north, snow tends to last longer in Norway and some resorts – including Trysil on the Swedish border – even promise a refund on your lift pass, accommodation, ski rental and tuition if the coverage isn’t sufficient.
HOW: A seven-night half board stay at Park Hotel, Voss, costs from £1,195 per person (two sharing), including flights and transfers. Departs March 16. Visit inghams.co.uk.
Best for adventure: Albania
Whether strolling through cobbled streets, gazing up at mountain peaks or swimming in sparkly blue waters, it’s easy to mistake Albania for its chic neighbour across the Adriatic Sea. But compared to Italy, the beaches are quieter, hidden spots are more plentiful, and the prices are significantly cheaper.
Specialising in trips for 18-35-year-olds, Contiki is the first youth tour operator to offer an escorted journey across the Balkan country. Learn about the past through capital city Tirana’s Ottoman, Fascist and Soviet architecture, hike trails in Valbonë National Park and relax on the golden beaches of the Albanian Riviera.
HOW: An eight-day trip costs from £911 per person, excluding flights. Departs June 22. Visit contiki.com.
Best for families: Galicia, Spain
While the mercury is rising to uncomfortable levels during summer in the southern Med, destinations along the north-western Iberian Peninsula are hotting-up in demand. Low-cost flights from the likes of Ryanair and Vueling have made it easier to access areas along Spain’s Galician coast, where green hills roll into cool Atlantic waters. Specialising in villas with pools, Vintage Travel has added several new properties in the region.
Head to cathedral city Santiago de Compostela to marvel at one of Europe’s finest pieces of religious architecture, where dozens of pilgrims gather after multi-day walks. Alternatively, visit ancient fishing port Coruna, also famous for its Roman lighthouse known as the Tower of Hercules, and dine out on excellent seafood.
HOW: Casa de Descanso, a newly restored threebedroomed house in Galician village Mosende, costs from £798 for a week in May rising to £1150 in August. Visit vintagetravel.co.uk.

Enter the South Korean Dragons
Leading South Korean choreographer EunMe Ahn brings her magical spectacle Dragons to Southampton to open her UK tour.
South Korean culture is currently riding a huge wave of popularity with both K-pop and Korean film crossing boundaries and being embraced by people worldwide.
Now iconic choreographer Eun-Me Ahn is hoping a tour of her work Dragons will spark the imaginations of UK audiences for Korean contemporary dance.
Eun-Me Ahn, 61, has been a dance trailblazer at home and abroad for decades. Eun-Me Ahn Company, which she founded in 1988, is one of the leading South Korean contemporary troupes, playing theatres and festivals around the world including the FIFA World Cup in South Korea in 2002. She has recently worked with Gucci, posing for an exhibition exploring the contributions of legendary Korean artists.
Her show Dragons was a hit with audiences in London and Salford in 2023 and this spring Eun-Me opens an eight-venue tour at Mayflower Theatre, Southampton on 24 and 25 February.
Eun-Me believes the world has finally woken up to the powerhouse which is South Korean culture.
“The Korean people have a special kind of talent, really truly,” she says. “We combine historical background with personal vision. We have had to struggle to survive. Since the Korean War ended, we have tried very hard to develop our country and prove ourselves.
“Culture can be more powerful than armies and the Korean people want to share their culture with other people.
“Education was very important. People studied dance and music and history. At the same time, we accepted modernity and new ideas of politics and economics. And we did that in a very positive way, importing ideas from the West, from Europe and America, but also keeping our own culture and traditions. It was very natural for us to mix them together.”
This blend of past and present is captured in Dragons where Eun-Me wanted to draw on one of Asia’s most significant and iconic creatures.
“The dragon is a very symbolic creature. Everybody knows it and we have many, many stories about the dragons. But the dragon in Asia has many sides. Sometimes it is very good, sometimes the dragon has humour, sometimes it is a brave hero and sometimes it becomes very bad.”
In the show, the traditional heritage of these mythical beasts is combined with cutting-edge technology to create a stunning kaleidoscope of past and present. Dragons features a cast of seven dancers live on stage –who interface with six guest performers who appear as holograms. These six young dancers come from Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan and South Korea and five of them were born around the year 2000, a Year of the Dragon.
The idea of combining holograms and stage performance was first sparked by having to use technology to communicate during Covid-19 lockdowns.
“I needed to develop a way that people could communicate with each other and the only solution was online technology,” recalls Eun-Me. “And so Dragons is a piece about the condition of the world, the young generation who are in the world and how they had to fight.
“It was the first time for them. Young people had never had this kind of world disaster through their life. It didn’t matter which country, it happened to all of us suddenly.”
Eun-Me and her team spent months directing and filming the six dancers and the development of the piece was painstaking.
“This process took a long time because we had to do it one-by-one,” Eun-Me says. “We had to teach them the movement using cell phones and sometimes we couldn’t even see their whole bodies. But we never gave up. And when we made the final show, I saw it in the theatre and I just shouted ‘wow’. It was unbelievable, we had made a beautiful moment.”
Eun-Me chose non-professional dancers as the guest performers as she believes they bring their own magic.
“I’m trying to introduce the culture and traditional dance of each of their countries and then the young people’s energy - how beautiful they are - that was a very important development,” she says.
“They bring their originality to our dance, which can’t be learned. The body is a pure land and when they dance and do something, it tells us a lot. I said ‘whatever you say, say something’ and they really said something! It’s not through professional eyes but they are smart and beautiful and they tell us more sometimes as they are.”
Renowned as an exceptionally charismatic performer, Eun-Me takes to the stage as one of the dancers in Dragons. She has also designed the spectacular costumes and overseen the creation of the dazzling sets.
The Dragons tour is presented by Dance Consortium, a group of 21 large-scale venues across the UK and Ireland who aim to bring top quality contemporary dance from across the world to local audiences. Now Eun-Me is looking forward to sharing her production with those audiences.
“I care about the whole world, how we can use dance to communicate with all people - it’s a very beautiful weapon to use,” she says. “I love travelling, to go abroad and meet new people, especially the kids. They love my piece because I put sunlight and salt and pepper in it for them!
“It’s good to be touring to new cities in the UK because it’s a way for us to bring our stories to those audiences. Historically the country has a strong art and culture scene but our Korean approach is different. So, two countries meet together and we can learn more about each other.
“This show will give audiences lots of new ideas. Visually it’s sparkling and shiny. Dragons is a dance of miracles.”

How to style Pantone’s 2025 Colour of the Year – Mocha Mousse
This warm, creamy brown has the wow factor, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
The story behind Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2025, Mocha Mousse, is one of inviting ‘sensorial warmth into home decor and interior design’, according to the Pantone pros.
Every year the experts at the Colour Institute make their prediction for the hue which best expresses the current climate and year to come – 2024’s Peach Fuzz, a gentle peach tone, caught our eye with its sense of playfulness and this latest pick is full of promise.
Cited as ‘a warming brown hue imbued with richness’ with ‘delectable qualities of chocolate and coffee, answering our desire for comfort’, with a ‘tasteful touch of glamour’ for good measure.
Celebrating the beauty of brown, it’s all about creating a calming aesthetic with creamy cappuccino and espresso in the mix… and one that’s resonating with designers.
“I think it is a fitting shade for 2025 and sets the precedent for comfortable luxury and grounded elegance within our homes,” says interior designer Tommy Kebbson of Kebbson & Co.
“It’s a colour that can belong with the minimalist, neutral tones which were so popular in 2024, but it also gives way for a brighter colour palette that lets you incorporate pops of colour with the grounding base of Mocha Mousse.”

Moreover, as designers begin to step away from the popular neutrals of years gone by, Kebbson thinks Mocha Mousse is a great example of this versatile shade can be incorporated into a colour palette of light pinks, deep purples or blues.
“This can build a colourful, fun profile alongside Mocha Mousse as the foundation colour,” suggests Kebbson.
Daniela Venturini, Wayfair’s art director and trend forecaster is also a fan: “Mocha Mousse captures a global longing for comfort, contentment, and everyday indulgence. This warm, mellow brown offers a harmonious balance of sophistication and approachability, making it perfect for interiors that feel both timeless and modern.”
She continues: “Mocha Mousse speaks to a broader design movement that celebrates simplicity, authenticity, and connection.”
To get your caffeine fix, here’s how to embrace this light brown hue and give your space some snug appeal….
A new era of warm minimalism
Mocha Mousse heralds a softer, more tactile approach to minimalism, notes Venturini. Instead of stark whites and greys, she says this colour brings depth and a sense of calm to clean-lined interiors.
“Imagine a serene living room with neutral-toned furniture, accented by soft Mocha Mousse walls or accessories to create a cocooning effect.”
Artful layering with colour and texture
“This shade works beautifully with dusty pastels and sun-kissed brights, offering endless opportunities for play,” enthuses Venturini.
“Pair it with soft cool matcha greens for a fresh, organic look, or combine it with panna cotta and coral tones for a summery vibe.”
“Add textural depth with boucle, linen, or rich velvet, ensuring every piece feels as comforting as it looks.”

Nature-inspired luxuries
Mocha Mousse reflects our continued desire to bring nature indoors…
“Introduce organic elements such as jute rugs, terracotta planters, or wooden accents, all anchored by the warmth of this hue. A centrepiece of fresh florals or preserved grasses in warm, earthy tones ties everything together,” highlights Venturini.
Culinary-inspired spaces
The comforting richness of this colour makes it an ideal choice for kitchens and dining areas,” says Venturini.
“The hue adds depth without overwhelming smaller homes, whether it’s a feature wall in a cosy lounge or an accent in an open-plan kitchen.”
“Picture mocha-toned kitchen units or a feature wall, paired with brass fixtures and creamy marble countertops. These elements come together to create a space that feels inviting yet elevated, perfect for hosting intimate gatherings.”
Cultural and global influences
“Mocha Mousse connects to a broader trend of drawing from global aesthetics,” underlines Venturini. “Its grounding, earthy tone works seamlessly with handcrafted ceramics or woven textiles. These touches add a sense of heritage and storytelling to modern interiors, making spaces feel meaningful and soulful.”
Styling Mocha Mousse
Use this colour on feature walls, but also consider unexpected places such as inside cabinetry, on the ceiling, or even on trimming for a dramatic, enveloping effect, outlines Venturini.
For furniture and accessories, she says a plush armchair, velvet ottoman, or lacquered side table in Mocha Mousse makes a subtle yet striking statement.
“Pair with handcrafted ceramics, heritage fabrics, or dark wood accents for a timeless feel… complement these with brass vases, metallic trays, or soft throw pillows for added flair.”
Balance and contrast
For a vibrant, upbeat look, she suggests layering Mocha Mousse with stimulating brights like coral pinks or sunny yellows. “To create a more tranquil environment, pair it with complementary shades like midnight plum or muted shade of green for a harmonious blend.”
Embrace comfort
“Mocha Mousse is all about indulgence,” opines Venturini. “Use it to create nooks for unwinding – a chaise lounge by the window with throws in varying shades of brown; or dining corner featuring mochatoned textiles and ambient lighting.”

Stay ahead of the game: Aleina Cameron’s advice for landlords in 2025
In the ever-evolving property market, staying ahead of the latest changes is crucial for landlords and tenants alike. That’s where Aleina Cameron, owner of Camerons Lettings, comes in. With years of experience in the Bournemouth property scene, Aleina and her team have built a reputation for providing expert guidance, tailored advice, and exceptional service to landlords, tenants, and investors.
As we step into 2025, the rental landscape is set to undergo significant changes. From new energy efficiency regulations to the phasing out of Section 21 “no-fault” evictions, landlords need to be prepared for what’s ahead. We caught up with Aleina to discuss these updates, their impact on Bournemouth landlords, and what steps they should take to stay compliant and competitive in the market.
Aleina, thanks for taking the time. Let’s dive right in – what are the biggest changes landlords need to know about for 2025?
My pleasure! 2025 is shaping up to be quite the year for landlords. The biggest change is the government’s push for energy efficiency. All rental properties will now need to have an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) rating of at least a C. If you’ve been putting off insulation upgrades or getting double glazing, now’s the time to act!
Sounds like a big adjustment. What happens if landlords don’t meet that requirement?
Well, the fines aren’t pretty – up to £30,000 for non-compliance. Plus, tenants are much savvier these days. They’ll be looking for energy-efficient homes to save on bills, so falling behind could hurt your rental appeal.
Any other new laws landlords should keep in mind?
Absolutely. Another major change is the phasing out of Section 21 “no-fault” evictions. It means landlords will need a valid reason to end a tenancy, like rent arrears or property damage. It’s all about creating more stability for tenants.
That sounds fair. How are landlords in Bournemouth reacting to these changes?
It’s a mixed bag! Some are proactive, getting their properties up to scratch now. Others… well, let’s just say they’re having a few sleepless nights. But at Cameron’s, we’re here to guide everyone through the process.
Lastly, any advice for landlords feeling overwhelmed?
Take a deep breath! Start with an EPC assessment to see where you stand. And don’t be afraid to ask for help – that’s what we’re here for. Landlords who adapt will thrive. Change is never easy, but it’s always an opportunity!
Great advice. Thanks, Aleina! Anytime! Let’s make 2025 a win for landlords and tenants alike!

Catch Maldivesinspired winter sun much closer to home on the Turkish Riviera
Prudence Wade discovers why the new Bijal resort near Antalya is transforming this region into a luxury destination.
We might think life is much better in a world of mod cons and digital devices, but it’s always humbling to learn that ancient technologies were surprisingly advanced.
I discover this first-hand on a visit to the ancient city of Side, on the Turkish Riviera, about an hour’s drive from capital Antalya. Dated back to the 7th century BC, ruins include a Roman forum, theatre and a reconstructed Greek fountain using genius tech to help bring water into the city from the mountains.
While 70% of the city remains covered, there’s plenty to marvel at – including some novel pieces of infrastructure which could benefit modern street planning. By building pipes into the walls instead of under the street, Romans avoided having to close off areas if anything went wrong, a far-too familiar sight nowadays.
It might have been built 2,000 years ago, but according to my guide, Ismet, the ancient drainage system still works just fine, passing a test earlier this year with flying colours after heavy rain.
“This is the centre of the world,” Ismet proclaims proudly, referring to more than just the site’s significance as a key nexus of historical trading routes. Gazing out to sea below blazing sunshine, modern bars, restaurants and shops breathe new life into ancient parts of the city.
I’m one of the many tourists wising up to what’s on offer along the Turkish Riviera. Around four hours flight from London, it’s a place where there are 320 days of sun a year, according to Ismet.
“Autumn is the best season,” he says, when daytime temperatures hover around 27 C and the sea is still blissfully warm. Plus, in October and November, you don’t have the same crowds as you would in summer.
I’m staying a five-minute drive away from Side, in a resort called Bijal. The Turkish Riviera might have a reputation for cheap and cheerful package holidays, but Bijal wants to change that and bring a bit of Maldives-inspired luxury to the coastline.
BELOW
The ruins in the ancient city of Side in Turkey | Alamy/PA
In fact, the owners – the Gürok Group – are also responsible for the Joali and Joali Being resorts in the Maldives. Similarly tropical and chic influences are felt in their Turkey outpost, which officially opened in spring last year.
Bijal feels delightfully quiet and serene compared to the hubbub outside its walls. All 19 villas have a private pool so you really don’t have to encounter anyone else if you don’t want to. And while I’ve taken the time to marvel at ancient technology, I can’t help but still appreciate the perks of modern life at Bijal – like heated pools and the high-tech gym.
Art classes are one of several on-site activities designed to lure guests out of their villas. Over the course of three sessions, London-based painter and ceramicist Venetia Berry helps my creative juices flow through pottery and painting classes, with easels set up overlooking the beach and sea.
I’m not very artistically talented, but luckily it’s a lowpressure situation and Venetia teaches a more surreal style, which really gives a newbie like me a lot of wiggle room.
“It’s very meditative,” says Venetia. “You’re looking at a beautiful view and painting, and not thinking about your phone or what meetings you have planned.”
She’s right. Sometimes we really need to be forced to put down our smartphones to realise how glorious it is to be disconnected.
“People will often leave school and not paint for 10, 15, 20 years and that inner child is still there,” adds Venetia.
Staff at Bijal have reported that guests who were previously art novices – like myself – have taken a class on a whim and returned home to enrol in courses.
When not painting, I spend time swapping between my private pool and the sandy beach – just a five-minute walk or two-minute cycle away from the villas, complete with a beach club and cabanas to stretch out in. Table tennis tables, dartboards, chessboards and various games prevent me from wasting hours doomscrolling on my phone.
In just a few days, I come to realise the Turkish Riviera is every bit as appealing as the Maldives – minus the 10plus hour journey and jet lag. And who knows, maybe I’ll even have to look into some painting classes myself to keep the holiday going for months to come.

Mottisfont reveals a nineteenth-century world of art and adventure
Three Victorian Travellers exhibition, 25 January – 20 April 2025.
Step into a nineteenth-century world of art and adventure in this captivating exhibition at the National Trust’s Mottisfont in Hampshire, featuring over 80 original artworks by three extraordinary Victorian watercolourists.
Albert Goodwin, Hercules Brabazon Brabazon and Walter Tyndale were not just artists; they were intrepid explorers who travelled widely, often to places viewed as exotic and inaccessible.
Their depictions of foreign lands and the remarkable stories of their encounters abroad were keenly embraced by the newly wealthy and literate middle classes of late 19th and early 20th century England who eagerly embraced the delights of travel.
Three Victorian Artists brings together scenes from the vast continents of Europe, Africa and Asia – a lost world, seen through the eyes of these great Victorian watercolourists who captured in paint and words their extraordinary travels:
“Rosetta [in Egypt] came up to my expectations as a sketching ground, and [Henry] Simpson was soon able to show me all the choicest bits. The bazaars were at their best; some of the stalls were laden with fruit both from Syria and the surrounding country...”.
“‘The fruit stalls first attracted my brush. Oranges and lemons were in place heaped up in great piles to be sold by auction to the retailers; huge clusters of dates, baskets overflowing with pomegranates, stacks of sugar-cane, and bundles of artichokes, gave one the whole range of the palette to play with.” Walter Tyndale, 1907.
Discover bustling Middle Eastern markets and picturesque Italian harbours, a shadowy Cape Town docks lit by moonlight and Cairo’s medieval hulking Citadel, drenched in sunlight under an intense blue sky. Each artist interpreted their experiences in their own style – Brabazon with his energetic and spontaneous brush, Goodwin with atmospheric detail, and Tyndale with an illustrative flair.
Alongside the paintings on show are a number of personal items belonging to Walter Tyndale, including his suitcase which reveals travelogues, scrapbooks of preliminary drawings, and diaries.
Walter was one of the most popular and influential watercolourists working at the turn of the 20th century.
Based for a time in Bath and later Haslemere he met and became close friends with Thomas Hardy. He was one of the first artists to benefit from the printing revolution, which led to a wealth of commissions for illustrated travel books including ‘The New Forest’ and ‘Hardy’s Wessex’ for which Hardy suggested suitable locations.
Walter’s Hampshire-based grand-daughter Judy recalls: “Walter’s early watercolour commissions for travel books on Wessex and the New Forest led to a career writing and illustrating extensive travel guides, from the South of France to as far afield as Japan.
“Although successful, money remained tight and family legend has it that he left his wife and three small boys to live on credit until his return, when the commissioned book would be sold and the original paintings sold.

“Walter originally trained as an oil portrait painter, but this changed when teaching a young lady watercolours, and a new career was formed combining his observational skills with a thirst for adventure. He loved meeting people and his illustrated travel books are full of local characters and incredible experiences.
“My mother was very fond of Walter and remembers him as a generous man. In later life, he hosted my parents’ wedding reception during World War Two, in the blackout, paying all costs from his home in Church Street, Kensington.”
Helen Potts, Visitor Experience Manager: “‘This exhibition provides a delightful burst of warmth on a chilly spring day. The vibrant colours and incredible detail – aweinspiring architecture, bustling markets and ancient artefacts - really draw you in. We’ve included some of the artists’ personal recollections too, captured during their travels, and which really give these scenes life. They’re a vivid expression of a world that no longer exists.”
More delights to discover at Mottisfont this winter…
WOMEN IN ART
As well as the exhibition, there are other delights for visitors to discover at Mottisfont this winter. To mark the launch of a new book Women Artists and Designers at the National Trust, Mottisfont is shining a spotlight on four important works from its own collection, by influential female artists, Vanessa Bell and Gwen John, Barbara Hepworth and Joan Eardley.
These fascinating women were at the very centre of British and Continental avant-garde art in the early 20th century, and some were well acquainted with Mottisfont owner and arts patron Maud Russell, who turned her home into a hub for artists and writers.
Spanning six centuries, Women Artists and Designers at the National Trust is a beautifully illustrated book that takes a closer look at women artists and designers whose lives and creativity have shaped our collections and our stories.
SNOWDROP WALK
In early February, thousands of snowdrops emerge in delicate white clusters. They litter the waterways that meander through the garden. A self-led snowdrop walk winds past these displays then takes visitors up to the beech circle where 3m high willow snowdrop sculptures can be found and excerpts of snowdrop poetry by the likes of Wordsworth and Tennyson.

Racing Pride exhibition celebrates the LGBTQ+ community in motorsport
A new exhibition at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu will explore hidden histories and signpost a way forward for more inclusivity in motorsport.
The Museum has worked with Racing Pride to showcase LGBTQ+ heritage and achievement in motorsport - a fascinating part of the history of motoring in Britain.
LGBTQ+ people have always been part of motorsport, but their stories have all too often been hidden rather than celebrated. This exhibition shines a light on the unique personal journeys of LGBTQ+ individuals across motorsport disciplines from early trailblazers such as Roberta Cowell to heroes and role-models who are racing today.
‘Racing Pride: Celebrating the LGBTQ community in motorsport ‘ is in the In Focus Gallery at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, Hampshire from Sunday 9 February – Sunday 7 September 2025.
Visitors will be able to see images and objects that tell the story of the LGBTQ+ experience in motorsport from the 1930s to the present day. Archive newsreels dating back to the late 1930s show the historic perspective, with subsequent film footage - including that from Racing Pride and the organisation’s ambassadors - bringing the narrative up to date. The role models featured come from a wide spectrum of motorsport including karting, motorcycling, Formula One and stunt driving.
The exhibition recognises the crucial role of vocal, visible allies in creating a sport for everyone, from Formula One World Champions who have spoken up in support of the LGBTQ+ community such as Sir Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel, to motorsport’s global fan community. It tells the story of the rise of Racing Pride - the world-leading movement launched in 2019 which is championing LGBTQ+ inclusion through motorsport internationally from grassroots to Formula One.
Motor racing driver and Racing Pride CEO & Co-Founder, Richard Morris says, “Motorsport has a huge reach and by galvanising the sport to promote inclusivity, Racing Pride can inspire positive attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community in society
more broadly. This exhibition seeks to inspire all LGBTQ+ people who visit it that they are valid, they are valued, and they belong in our sport. “
This is the first time that the National Motor Museum has worked with an LBGTQ+ group to co-curate an exhibition. Senior Curator, Sarah Wyatt says:, “We are delighted to collaborate with Racing Pride on this landmark exhibition which is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The Museum is committed to more inclusive and diverse programming as it looks to the future and the transformation of the exhibition spaces. Highlighting and celebrating LGBTQ+ heritage can be complex. Whilst some LGBTQ+ histories are overt and well-known, others are more obscure and speculative. The influence of the LGBTQ+ community on Britain’s social, cultural, intellectual and economic spheres resonates throughout history and we are proud to present this exhibition”.

How to bring ‘spathroom’ style to your bathroom
The boons of beautifying your bathroom are there to be enjoyed, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
For those looking to promote their wellbeing, manage their stress levels and enjoy some inner peace, booking a spa break is right up there on our bucket list.
And with the benefits well storied, it’s hardly surprising we’re finding ways to recreate the same feeling at home… think scented candles, spa-inspired accessories and chilling out in a ritualistic space.
“Bathrooms have become our haven for self-care,” opines Emma Freeman, brand and communications manager for Hansgrohe UK.
“Whether it’s wanting a relaxing bath after a long day, or functional yet calm space to do our skincare routine before bed, turning your bathroom into a ‘spathroom’ is a great way to indulge in everyday relaxation.”
The key to recreating a spa experience is through the senses, says Freeman. “By tapping into sight, touch, smell, sound – and even taste – and focusing on how these are elevated when we feel relaxed, we can start to identify the accessories and design elements to create the perfect ‘spathroom’.”
Warm lighting brings a sense of calm, suggests Freeman, while cool, stone floors ground you. Soft scents of lavender aid relaxation, and rainfall showers bring you closer to nature – all these elements help create an everyday spa-like experience.
Clean lines and simplicity
As Harriet Goodacre, style consultant and brand communications manager at Topps Tiles points out: “Keeping things simple and minimalistic not only allows our mind to feel calmer, but also taps into the ‘spathroom’ aesthetic.”
When it comes to the overall look of your bathroom, keep the design simple…
“Neutral colours or stone effect tiles are a great way to bring that spa-like feel into the home, adding a touch of spa-inspired luxury,” highlights Goodacre.
When you pair simplicity with texture, such as a fluffy robe or bathmat, she says you can create a real sense of cosiness, making the space more inviting.
“Luscious and large fluffy towels add to that luxe feeling, offering a simple way to tap into the trend for creating a spa-like space with some simple but effective touches.”
Simplicity also goes well with minimalism. Goodacre suggests opting for clutter-free smart storage, including handless cabinets.
“I recommend dedicating your bathroom countertop space to decorative items, such as aromatherapy essential oils or scented candles, with calming scents like lavender, chamomile or eucalyptus.”
Freeman agrees: “Nothing will ruin the at-home spa ambience like clutter and mess. You don’t want to have your shampoo bottles scattered on the side, rusty shower caddies, or rings around bottles from sitting on ceramic surfaces. A great solution is to incorporate sleek wall niches into the shower or bathing area – this keeps everything within reach, yet cleverly hidden away from sight to create a seamless, calming aesthetic.”
Lean into nature
Nothing makes us feel more relaxed than connecting with nature…
“Add touches of natural materials such as wood, stone and bamboo for effect, whether this be through flooring, wall tiles or accessories,” underlines Goodacre. “These elements add warmth and bring a calming feeling into your bathroom.”
Colour is important, too, notes Goodacre.
“Shades of green allow you to create a soothing environment that invites mother nature into your bathroom – incorporate the shade by hanging fresh eucalyptus in your shower, adding potted plants, or by adding tiles with a soft sage green hue to your walls and floors.”
Power up your shower experience
Shower heads which allow you to select different spray patterns help create unique experiences, depending on your mood and needs, notes Freeman.
“For example, rainfall showers incorporate fine droplets of water – as opposed to strands – which cocoon your body, giving that tropical rain experience in the comfort of your own home.”
ABOVE

Other types of rain sprays turn the water into microdroplets, which mimic misty rain, creating a quieter, more relaxing experience that’s also gentler on the skin, she adds.
“To create an invigorating body experience, consider ditching the usual overhead and hand shower combination with a shoulder and neck shower,” advises Freeman.
“This can help control where the spray is directed, allowing water to hit you in the right places, with the right pressure… an at-home waterfall, if you will.”
She continues: “And for those who want a massage but don’t have a volunteer masseuse, hand showers with multiple spray options may include a massage option –providing a direct, concentrated jet of water which you can use on any areas where pressure is needed.”

Create an ambience with mood lighting
Warm lighting is signature to a spa experience…
“It can be hard to incorporate into your bathroom, if you only have spotlights or one ‘big’ light,” says Freeman. “Placing scented candles around the bathroom creates a moody, relaxing ambience, but may not be enough light for you to see.
“Here, I would recommend smart mirrors that have multiple lighting options – from different colour hues to adjustable brightness levels – an easy solution, giving you full control of the right lighting to suit your mood or bathroom ritual.”
Depending on your budget, she says a heated mirror is an underrated, but great option. “It helps avoid misted mirrors, in case you need to closely check your pores after removing a hydrating face mask… post-bubble bath soak.
“Tranquillity is embedded in all the small touches,” emphasises Freeman. “To create your own spa-like sanctuary, be sure to think about how your bathroom should feel, look, smell and sound.”

How vintage paint colours are making a comeback
Retro style makes a signature statement, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
Trends come and go but if we cast our eye back, it’s the classics which stand the test of time – namely our love affair with all things retro.
Moreover, the shades which come to mind… mustard yellow, earthy brown, amber, sienna and pastel blue. Inspired by nature and the spirited vibe of the Seventies era. “Colour is a powerful time machine when it comes to sparking memories and emotion, says Marianne Shillingford, creative director and colour expert at Dulux.
“So it’s natural we gravitate towards those we associate with happy moments from the past, because they are familiar and comforting.”
Indeed, grey has reigned supreme as the modern go-to colour for years, but our love for all-things retro is seeing vintage colours making a comeback.
As she points out, with noughties fashion influences reappearing and avocado bathrooms being revived, people are turning to nostalgic hues with ‘Seventies interior design’ at the core, and very current.
“I don’t think there’s a more nostalgic time than Christmas and New Year,” highlights Shillingford. “So, it’s inevitable we’ll tap into colour schemes that keep that sentimental holiday feeling alive. Vintage design and décor will always hold a place in our hearts simply because it’s a way to connect us with the well-loved and timeless looks our parents and grandparents lovingly gifted us.”
For those wanting to turn back time, Shillingford highlights five essential vintage colours to get on board with…
Yellow
“Yellow is one of the original vintage colours due to its feel-good factor that people tapped into during hard times,” underlines Shillingford. “Using bright yellows is a way of getting an instant mood boost.
“The modern ‘dopamine decorating’ is no different, inspired by maximalism and playful colour chaos. Everyone has an inner desire to be a bit rebellious – it’s way more fun than feeling like an adult with a neverending list of responsibilities!”
She says yellow is bold and unexpected, which makes it so enjoyable to decorate with. “It forces you to let your hair down and embrace feeling free.”
Orange
“Orange is the middle ground to yellow’s optimism and red’s fearless energy – two things we tend to associate and admire in our older generations,” notes Shillingford.
So, shades in the orange colour family tend to have a sentimental nostalgia, as if receiving words of wisdom from your grandparents, suggests Shillingford. “Although, like being told what to do as a kid, it can be quite like Marmite and not to everyone’s taste,” she quips.
Green
“Green transports us to the Seventies where warm muted shades that linked to nature were all the craze in interiors and fashion,” opines Shillingford.
“Avocado green was the epitome of that decade. Whether you lived through the Seventies or not, everyone can picture the green bathtubs, toilets and sinks.
We’re drawn to green today, for the same reason we were in the Seventies, explains Shillingford. “It’s a humble colour.
“We feel comfortable around green because we see it a lot in nature, so it has a unique ability to reassure us, by bringing a familiar sight into our homes that isn’t neutral, yet not-in-your-face either.”
Bedroom painted in blush pink | @cherry_at_home/PA
Blue
“Blue is known for being the colour connected to reliability – something that always seems more appropriate to the past, because it’s happened already, we know the outcome,” outlines Shillingford.
Like a trusted pair of jeans being the timeless wardrobe essential, she says blue is a staple shade with an easygoing nature. “Recently we’ve seen this trustworthy shade popping up in surprising places with the rise of the ‘unexpected blue’ interiors trend,” notes Shillingford.
“This sees bursts of blue appear against more neutral or contrasting colour palettes, in ways that almost shouldn’t work… but absolutely do. Creating a dramatic focal point – and bold, Seventies-style statement.”
Pink
“Pink that is soft and subtle, like blush pink or sorbet, offers the feeling of a caring touch, ” says Shillingford.
“These gentle hues reflect the Thirties and Forties desire for some classic glamour, as well as being the start of pink becoming seen as a feminine colour.
“As an era often romanticised for its elegance and sophistication, it’s no wonder we turn to these shades in our interiors to bring a touch of class and style.”

What to sow and grow this February
Ready to get your hands dirty? Here are some jobs to add to your gardening to-do list this February…
As the chill of winter begins to ease, February is the perfect time to start preparing for the growing season ahead.
Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a first-time grower, this month offers exciting opportunities to sow new seeds and nurture hardy crops that will ensure your garden is ready to flourish as spring approaches.
We’ve chatted a gardening expert who has shared his recommendations on what plants to sow and grow this February, plus some handy care tips which will help them thrive…
Cauliflower
The end of winter is the perfect time to get some early varieties of vegetables in the soil, and hardy vegetables such as cauliflower particularly thrive this time of year.
“Cauliflower can be sown at this time, ready for early crops,” says Andrew White, gardening expert at Rhino Greenhouses Direct. “Many varieties prefer to be planted deep and covered until they have germinated.
“Cauliflowers thrive in modules or in a seed bed, and should ready to be transplanted after six weeks.”
And mulching is the key to success.
“You’ll want to keep the cauliflowers mulched, to retain water, and if the sun starts getting strong before they’re ready to harvest, you may want to shade them with some larger leaves,” suggests White.

Carrots
Homegrown carrots often encompass a more pronounced earthy sweetness, and if you sow them now you’ll be able to enjoy them sooner.
“While carrots are usually sown outdoors from April, you can get a head start on your carrot crop with some early cultivars that can be sown in your greenhouse in February,” says White.
“Your carrots need plenty of depth to grow, so containers should be 40-50cm deep, depending on the variety.”
And remember to keep the soil well-watered, as carrot seeds love moist environments.
“Prepare your pots or planters will well-watered soil and sow your carrot seeds shallowly in rows,” advises White. “Water gently to keep the soil moist for the first 10-20 days, until the seeds have germinated, and be ready to thin them out.”
Pak choi
Growing your own pak choi will bring some lovely sweet flavours and textures to your spring dishes.
“Plant in your greenhouse in February, transplant in March and get ready to harvest as soon as April,” instructs White. “However, some baby choi varieties are ready to harvest just 50 days after sowing.”
These leafy Chinese veggies are used to hot conditions, so a cosy greenhouse with stable conditions is ideal for end of winter and into spring planting. “Plant seeds wellspaced and to a shallow depth in compost, and set it in a south-facing position in your greenhouse,” advises the gardening expert. “Water consistently, without leaving the soil soggy, and thin the seedlings out as they grow.”
Delphiniums
Add a pop of colour to your garden by planting some tall elegant delphiniums.
“This plant will thrive when planted in a greenhouse in February,” says White. “You can plant in pots or seed trays, into compost, at around just 3mm deep. Keep the soil covered until germination, and care for the seedlings by keeping the soil moist.”
Plus, there are a few extra things you can do to ensure they grow nice and tall.
“Separate them out when the seedlings get their second set of leaves, and once the risk of frost has passed, you can harden them off before planting them into a sunny spot, out of the wind, in well-drained soil,” recommends White.
Violas
Violas are another gorgeous flower that can be planted in February.
“Plant under a plastic lid and spray to keep moist, and make sure seed trays are placed in a bright location, but not in the direct heat of sunlight,” advises White. “Seedlings can be separated once their leaves are fully formed, and once the frosts have passed, can be planted out.”

ISUZU LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN HIGHLIGHTING TAX CHANGES ON DOUBLE-CAB PICK-UPS
Isuzu has announced the launch of its new BIK campaign, aimed at encouraging customers to secure a D-Max before significant tax changes come into effect in April.
The company is raising awareness of the forthcoming changes, dispelling myths circulating on social media, and providing customers with accurate details to make better-informed decisions about when to order a new pick-up, whether an Isuzu or not, in 2025.
Under HMRC’s updated legislation announced in the Autumn Budget last year, double cab pick-ups will no longer be classified as commercial vehicles for Benefit in Kind (BIK) and Capital Allowances (CA) purposes. Instead, they will be treated as cars, leading to increased tax liabilities for buyers and businesses alike.
The new BIK campaign will highlight this pivotal change. The campaign serves as a reminder for businesses and buyers to act now and take advantage of the current tax benefits before the new rules come into force.
Alan Able, Managing Director of Isuzu UK, commented: “The BIK campaign reflects our commitment to keeping our customers informed and empowered. We recognise that HMRC’s decision represents a fundamental shift in how double cab pick-ups are taxed. With this campaign, we aim to ensure our customers understand the implications and
encourage them to act now to avoid higher costs later. The Isuzu D-Max has always been the backbone of businesses, and this campaign underscores the value it offers ahead of the upcoming changes.”
In brief the changes mean from 6th April, double cab pick-ups will be treated as cars for BIK purposes, shifting from the current flat rate of £3,960 to a variable rate based on CO2 emissions. Capital Allowances (CA) from April mean pick-ups will also be classified as cars moving away from their prior status as ‘plant and machinery.’
Double cab pick-ups purchased or ordered before 6th April 2025 for BIK purposes (and 1st April 2025 for CA purposes) will retain their commercial vehicle classification until the disposal, lease expiry, or 5th April 2029. Single and extended cab pick-ups remain classified as commercial vehicles.
Isuzu are a pick-up of choice for lots of buyers and the company is trying to persuade potential buyers to buy now and save costs due to these tax changes.
THE ALL-NEW ŠKODA ELROQ
Škoda’s founding fathers Václav Laurin and Václav Klement gained their first experience with electrification 116 years ago. In 1908, two electric motors joining forces with a 4.5-litre petrol engine made the Laurin & Klement E the company’s first hybrid. In the late 1930s, electric beer lorries were built in Mladá Boleslav. Between 1991 and 1994, several hundred units of the Škoda Eltra 151L, based on the Favorit and the Pick-up, were sold first in Switzerland and later in other European countries. The modern era of electric mobility at Škoda began in 2011 with the Octavia Green E Line. The engineers built ten prototypes to test the feasibility of electric powertrains. Škoda Auto’s first fully electric production model was the Škoda Citigoe iV launched in early 2020.
The all-new Škoda Elroq is the Czech brand’s first all-electric model in the compact SUV category, with a maximum range of up to 360 miles. Its standard equipment includes a rear-view camera, Blind Spot Detection, 13-inch infotainment and SmartLink. Elroq prices start from £31,500.
Elroq is the latest addition to Škoda’s growing electric portfolio, which will include various new models over the coming years. The compact SUV is the electric alternative to the Karoq and offers list price parity with its ICE counterpart. Available with three different battery sizes and powertrains outputs start at 170 PS for the entry-level Elroq 50 model and the Elroq 85 can achieve a maximum range of 360 miles
The excellent aerodynamics with a drag coefficient of just 0.26 are the result of many clever design tweaks, among them specially moulded exterior mirrors. An active cooling
roller blind behind the front apron opens automatically when cooling air is required for the battery system.
The Elroq always comes with a central, 13-inch infotainment display as standard. Drivers can define up to five shortcuts leading to frequently accessed vehicle functions and up to four shortcuts for apps. It is also no longer necessary to authenticate the user on the welcome screen; instead, users are logged in automatically. A physical button bar below the infotainment display provides quick access to menus controlling the assistance systems, driving modes, parking functions and climate controls.
The Škoda Elroq 50 with rearwheel drive and a 55 kWh battery is the entry-level model, offering a range of up to 230 miles. Located on the rear axle, its electric motor develops a peak output of 170 PS and a maximum torque of 310 Nm. The Elroq 60 has a battery capacity of 63 kWh and offers a range of around 260 miles. Its motor develops 204 PS and 310 Nm of torque.

MINI ACEMAN –PREMIUM EV FUN
There is quite an art to successfully managing history and pedigree into a modern incarnation and nowhere more than in the automotive industry. Some car makers manage it very successfully while others seem to create more of a pastiche in their efforts. One car maker that has taken an original car and created a highly popular modern interpretation is BMW with the MINI range. While the MINI may not be anywhere near as mini as it used to be there are a lot of nods to its heritage yet the line-up encapsulates the best of what a modern car should be as many buyers all over the world seem to agree judging by its popularity.
The range includes full EVs in addition to petrol engines and all-wheel-drive with a wide range of body styles. One of the new models within the line-up is the Aceman all electric with pricing from £31,800 for the Classic trim level, £34,000 for the Exclusive and £36,300 for the Sport version. There are E and SE levels within each model and the John Cooper Works model starts from £40,800. Standard equipment across the range includes such items as LED
Bluetooth,
and steering wheel, navigation and air conditioning. As the trim levels move the standard equipment levels rise and there is a myriad of different option packs available.
The interior, as with all MINIs to be fair, feels different, premium, compared to many rivals of similar pricing. A nod to the original Mini’s interior is immediately visible with the large round central display screen, now OLED so the clarity is superb. The seats are comfortable and supportive with both front seats having height adjustment. As with all
modern cars the tech with touchscreen and apps can feel a bit daunting but familiarity would undoubtedly make life easier. The system is also one of the more intuitive ones too.
On the road the Aceman is terrific fun thanks to its handling and performance. Although not overtly fast in terms of top speed it nonetheless reaches the benchmark 62 mph in a whisker under 8 seconds for the lowest powered version, that develops 184 hp, 7.1 seconds for the 218 hp and just 6.4 seconds for the 258 hp John Cooper Works model.
Range is always an issue with any EV and MINI has made great strides in this regard with the lead-in model giving 192 miles and a much more useable 251 miles for the mid-range SE versions. Style aside, which is always a subjective matter, I suspect few would find much to complain about in the way the Aceman drives, and if you remain to be convinced by EVs there is a generous petrol engine range of MINIs available.
ŠKODA CONFIRMS
SPECIFICATION AND PRICE FOR ALL-NEW KODIAQ VRS
Škoda has opened its order books for the latest member of its all-new Kodiaq family – the vRS. The sporting flagship of the range follows its acclaimed predecessor and means that, once more, up to seven occupants can enjoy the vRS experience. Priced from £52,595 and available to order now, the new Kodiaq vRS delivers more power and performance than the previous vRS range-topper, and benefits from all the practicality, comfort and design improvements introduced on the new, second-generation model.
As befits its position as the sporting flagship of the new Kodiaq range, the vRS comes with LED Matrix beam headlights, KESSY Advanced system with Open On Approach and Walk Away Locking, Canton sound system and an electrically operated boot with Virtual Pedal.
Powered by a 2.0 TSI petrol engine that develops 265 PS - an increase of 20 PS over the previous model - the new vRS is capable of sprinting from 0-62 mph in just 6.4 seconds and has a top speed of 143 mph. Despite its performance, it returns 33.8 mpg on the WLTP combined cycle. Power distribution to all four wheels is handled by a seven-speed DSG transmission.
The bespoke vRS Lounge Design Selection includes sports seats with integrated headrests and black microsuede/artificial leather upholstery with red contrast stitching. Both front seats are electrically adjustable as standard and come with a memory function. The headlining is finished in black while the dashboard panels, door inserts and centre armrest are all trimmed with black microsuede material.
The driving environment is suitably sporty with a three-spoke multifunction sports steering wheel with red stitching and a vRS badge on the lowest spoke. Stainless-steel pedal covers are included as standard while the front door sills feature Kodiaq lettering.
The laminated glass of the acoustic side windows at the front and rear improves comfort inside the car and, like the other Kodiaq models, the vRS features both a 10.25inch Virtual Cockpit and a free-standing 13inch infotainment screen as standard.
Drive Mode Select is included as standard and allows drivers to choose between Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport, Individual and Snow modes, each with corresponding electronic damper adjustment. An OffRoad mode is included as well.
Finally, to ensure that the Kodiaq vRS stops as efficiency as it accelerates, drivers benefit from ventilated front and rear brake disks and larger two-piston calipers on the front axle. The brake calipers are finished in gloss red.
BYD INTRODUCES COMPACT ATTO 2 SUV
BYD is introducing the new ATTO 2 SUV, it has the raised ride height of an SUV but in a package that is tailored more to urban streets and parking arrangements and complements the larger ATTO 3.
The front of the vehicle features full-LED headlights and slim daytime-running lights, the sides have lower cladding, broken up by highlights, to help accentuate the height of the car. ATTO 2 comes in Climbing Grey paint as standard, with three shades – Hiking Green, Skiing White and Cosmos Black – available as options.
Inside the layout has the premium materials BYD had become known for in its interiors. The cabin features padded surfaces in all key areas, and integrated handles in the front and rear doors, as well as in the lower centre console.
The centre console contains a pair of cupholders and an integrated arm rest, which
opens up to reveal one of several storage areas. The drive selector itself has a cutdiamond look, while the area surrounding it incorporates hard keys for some key functions, such as the windscreen demister, along with a volume knob for the sound system and a switch that flicks between the car’s driving modes.
The cabin is enhanced by a panoramic glass roof, which allows generous amounts of natural light for all occupants. Designed with EVs in mind, BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 has a completely flat floor, so the rear seats remain practical enough for family use.
Beyond the passenger compartment, the ATTO 2’s boot measures 400 litres and can be increased to 1,340 litres when the split folding rear seat is lowered.
The Blade Battery technology is space efficient, with cells installed directly instead of being fitted in multiple modules. This allows more cells to be squeezed into the same area than with a conventional battery construction. In addition, the Blade Battery is also 100% free of cobalt and nickel.
ATTO 2 will be offered with a choice of two battery sizes. At launch the standard range will have a rated capacity of 45.1 kWh, delivering a range of 195 miles. Its frontmounted motor produces 130 kW.
In the coming months, a larger-battery version will arrive, and full specifications on this and details on the ATTO 2’s standardequipment lists and range structure, will be announced.

Here’s how to take back control of your diet and cut down on ultra-processed foods
Feel overwhelmed by UPFs? Don’t be, says nutritionist Delicia Bale, you can handle them.
It’s hard to look at a packet of Monster Munch or a chocolate biscuit now without the words ‘ultra-processed food’ (UPF) flashing through your brain. It’s almost enough to put you off, but then you get sucked in by the nostalgia factor of Frazzles or a desperate need to dunk a Hobnob in a cup of tea…
Or maybe not. If you’ve read UltraProcessed People by TV doctor Chris van Tulleken, you might already be religiously checking the labels on your favourite snacks, pasta sauces, cereals, yoghurt, sausages, vegan meat alternatives and –worst of all – bread.
You might even be putting them back on the supermarket shelf when you realise half the ingredients are pure gobbledegook; a confusing blur of additives, emulsifiers, preservatives and flavour enhancers, none of which resemble any real ingredients you could buy individually.
UPFs “are industrially processed foods and contain ingredients that aren’t typically used in home kitchens,” explains food writer and registered nutritionist Delicia Bale. “They’re also normally high in calories, fat, saturated fat, sugar, salt and low in fibre and micronutrients. In research, they have been described as ‘hyper palatable’ – they’re designed to be over-consumed.”
That’s why, once you pop you can’t stop with crisps, why a packet of chocolate
buttons is gone without you even realising, and why two slices of white bread doesn’t seem to touch the sides.
And the other problem is, some things you would never expect to be ultra-processed, are, like stock cubes, shop-bought pastry (“One of the harder ones to make from scratch,”) and mayonnaise. “It’s going to go off quite quickly if you make it yourself. I swap it for Greek yogurt,” says Bale. “If you find one that’s not too sour tasting, it’ll work quite well and it also increases the protein slightly and decreases the fat in recipes.”
Even some tins of coconut milk have added emulsifiers. “I don’t really understand why, because coconut milk still separates, even with an emulsifier in it,” says Bale, bemused.
Then there’s bread, which she calls “probably the most widely consumed ultraprocessed food”. Homemade, it’s just four ingredients: flour, salt, water and yeast. But check the back of your supermarket loaf and the ingredients list may shock you.
Even when you are aware of UPFs and the many health dangers associated with eating them, including an increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers, they are ubiquitous, so can feel borderline inescapable.
Which is why Bale, 27, has written her debut cookbook, Unprocessed Made Easy. “When reducing UPFs in people’s diets, they don’t really know where to start,” she says. “So my book is focused on direct swaps for foods that typically are processed.”
She provides homemade trades for everything from granola and pancakes, to noodles, soups, pizza and burgers, while keeping costs low and, crucially, meal prepping speedy. Because this is the major issue; besides UPFs being so darned delicious and available, it seems so much quicker and easier to just buy the tinned soup or the plastic-wrapped ready meal, than buy a set of ingredients, then go home and transform it into a meal.
“People have less time, so they rely on those foods,” says Bale, without judgement. But the fact is, “a meta analysis on ultraprocessed foods found that, looking at all the different studies so far, there’s been no positive association seen with consuming UPFs.” Unless you count the taste.
Bale’s mother was a personal trainer, so she grew up eating “pretty healthy” and has been interested in eating well since. While studying nutrition at the University of Surrey, she began writing recipes and fell in love with food photography. Now she has 116k followers on Instagram and one million likes on TikTok.
She says her interest in tackling UPF consumption comes from the fact “it’s not about restricting one particular type of food. Obviously, restrictive diets aren’t sustainable, I like this [area of nutrition] because I think [reducing UPFs] is something people can maintain long term.”
Growing up in Canada has also had a major impact on her understanding of food. “The way people eat here is quite different,” she says of Britain. “[In Canada] people’s main meals would be more unhealthy, but here, people’s meals are generally pretty healthy, but then they’re eating a lot of the high fat, high sugar, high salt snack foods. People don’t really eat crisps or chocolate every single day [in Canada], and then I moved here, and that’s what people were eating in their packed lunch.”
Compared to other countries, Britain is something of a UPF stronghold. “When we’re comparing ourselves to every European country, and especially Mediterranean countries, they’re still consuming some UPFs, but it’s only about 10 to 20% [of their diet] whereas here, it’s closer to
60%,” says Bale. A study in 2019 found it was a whopping 57%, and for teenagers, closer to 80%.
She’s not asking you to go full on cold turkey though. “I still do eat some UPFs,” she admits. “It’s quite difficult to avoid, especially in social situations. I don’t think it’s something that needs to be removed from people’s diets entirely. I just think it needs to be reduced by quite a lot.”
She recommends starting off by swapping one meal a day for something non ultraprocessed and “not feeling like they have to remove everything all at once, because that can be quite overwhelming, and also not thinking they need to completely cut it out and never eat it again. A restrictive mindset makes it so people, if they eat one UPF, they think, ‘Oh no, I’ve broken my diet,’ and then they give up trying.”
Bale is adamant: “It doesn’t have to be difficult to make changes to your diet and eat healthier or eat less UPFs. It doesn’t have to be super complicated.” You can do it.

Unprocessed Made Easy by Delicia Bale ANutr is published in hardback by Ebury Press, priced £20. Photography by Delicia Bale. Available now
INGREDIENTS
For the dough:
300g Greek yogurt
135g self-raising flour
135g wholemeal flour
1tsp bicarbonate of soda
½tsp dried oregano
½tsp garlic granules
Pinch of salt
1tbsp olive oil
For the pizza sauce:
200g tinned cherry tomatoes
2tbsp tomato paste
½tsp Italian herbs
½tsp chilli flakes
Salt and black pepper
For the toppings:
1-2 balls of mozzarella, sliced
Handful of cherry vine tomatoes, sliced
½tsp chilli flakes
Chopped basil
INGREDIENTS
200g oats
60g flaked almonds
60g hazelnuts, chopped
50g pecans, chopped
50g desiccated coconut
50g pumpkin seeds
80g coconut oil, melted
100ml maple syrup
1tsp vanilla extract
1tsp ground cinnamon
Pinch of salt
Mozzarella and cherry tomato pizza
MAKES 1 LARGE PIZZA
“This pizza recipe features a wholemeal, Greek yogurt dough that is packed with protein, making it a really satisfying meal,” says Bale. “The pizza sauce is also simple to make yourself. I prefer using tinned cherry tomatoes for some recipes as I find them sweeter and much more flavourful.”
1. Preheat the oven to 180ºC.
2. Put the Greek yogurt, self-raising and wholemeal flours, bicarbonate of soda, oregano, garlic granules and salt in a bowl and mix gently until they are combined.
3. Roll the ball out into a thin circle around one centimetre thick and then use your fingers to form a crust around the edge. You may need to use some flour to stop it sticking to the surface.
4. Transfer to a large baking tray, drizzle with the olive oil and bake for 10-12 minutes.
5. Meanwhile, blend the sauce ingredients together until smooth.
6. Remove the pizza from the oven and top with your sauce, the mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, some salt and pepper and the chilli flakes, then place back in the oven to bake for 5-10 minutes until the cheese is melted and the pizza is golden.
7. Serve topped with fresh chopped basil.
Maple cinnamon granola
MAKES AROUND 6 PORTIONS
“Most cereals in supermarkets are ultra-processed, so making your own granola is a good alternative option that is similar to cereal,” says nutritionist Delicia Bale.
1. Preheat the oven to 170ºC.
2. Mix together the oats, flaked almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, desiccated coconut, pumpkin seeds, coconut oil, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon and salt until well combined.
3. Spread the mixture evenly onto a lined baking sheet (you may need to split it between two sheets as if it is too thick, it won’t cook all the way through).
4. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the granola is slightly golden.
5. Leave to cool for around 30 minutes, then break into pieces.
Baked squash mac and cheese
SERVES 4
INGREDIENTS
1 butternut squash, peeled and cut into chunks
4tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 garlic clove, minced
2tbsp chopped sage
2tbsp thyme leaves
60g plain flour
900ml semi-skimmed milk
2tsp Dijon mustard
75g mature Cheddar cheese, grated
50g vegetarian Italian hard cheese, grated
400g wholegrain macaroni
Salt and black pepper
For the topping:
4tbsp breadcrumbs
Grated Cheddar cheese
“This healthy twist on mac and cheese includes a serving of butternut squash, which makes the sauce super creamy,” she says. “The wholegrain macaroni also adds in some extra fibre.”
1. Preheat the oven to 180ºC. Place the butternut squash in a baking tray along with half the olive oil and some salt and pepper. Roast the squash for 20-30 minutes until soft and golden brown.
2. Cook the remaining olive oil, garlic, sage and thyme in a pan for a couple of minutes until fragrant. Then add the flour and mix together. Cook this for a couple of minutes. Gradually add the milk, a bit at a time, mixing in between to avoid lumps until it thickens.
3. Stir in the mustard, cheeses and roasted butternut squash and cook for a couple of minutes, then blend until smooth.
4. Meanwhile, cook the pasta according to the package directions.
5. Stir the cooked pasta and sauce together, then transfer to an ovenproof dish and top with breadcrumbs, grated Cheddar cheese and thyme. Then grill for a few minutes until the cheese is melted and golden.
