NATIONAL MOTOR MUSEUM GRANT FROM THE WOLFSON FOUNDATION WILL ASSIST MUSEUM TRANSFORMATION

The Wolfson Foundation has awarded a £75,000 grant to the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu. The Museum will use the funding towards the cost of refurbishing the ground floor galleries - transforming the entrance and welcome, and to develop a new Ages of Motoring gallery.

The Wolfson Foundation is an independent charity with a focus on research and education. Its aim is to support civil society by investing in excellent projects in science, health, heritage, humanities and the arts.

Jon Murden, Chief Executive of the National Motor Museum says, “We are delighted that the Museum will receive this support from the Wolfson Foundation. The funding will enable the Museum to develop new and imaginative ways of sharing the story of motoring, its past, present and future, and demonstrating the way motoring has had an influence on our lives and society.  The Wolfson Foundation award allows us to take the next steps in our masterplan to reimagine the Museum and its Collections Centre.”

Paul Ramsbottom, Chief Executive of the Wolfson Foundation, says, “We are pleased to support the National Motor Museum with the redevelopment of its ground floor galleries. Through creative and engaging displays, this project will bring the story of motoring to life, inspiring and connecting broader audiences with the Museum and its collections.”

‘GREEN WIN’ AS LIGHT WORK IS SET TO PAY OFF AT LIGHTHOUSE

Improved lighting will pay for itself in little more than a year, reports Lighthouse Poole, with savings forecast of almost £10,000 and nearly eight tonnes of CO2e*. Having recently completed essential improvement works to enhance energy efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and ensure the long-term sustainability of its operations, Lighthouse is pleased to announce a significant ‘Green win’.

The project centred around the installation of LED lighting in front of house and backstage areas, complemented by the strategic placement of movement sensors. The works cost nearly £12,450, of which £5,000 was paid for by a decarbonisation grant from BCP Council with funding through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Lighthouse making up the difference.

The global environmental situation is of great significance to the artistic community and Lighthouse is conscious of its responsibility to play a part in addressing this.

Renters rights bill update

This is currently in the House of Lords having passed the first and second reading and presently in the committee stage. After this it will go to report stage and the third reading.

The proposed timeline is still this year and somewhere between May and October.

Part of the bill is anticipated to include no longer being able to take rent in advance and guarantors’ obligations to be capped to six months rent arrears. This will be of concern to many landlords and will have a negative impact on those tenants who do not pass referencing in the normal way. However, there are insurance companies (and I anticipate there to be more choice in the next couple of years) that will guarantor a tenant, where one is required with a cost around one week’s rent per annum (nonrefundable).

Are you documenting carbon monoxide?

The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (Amendment Regulations 2022) made a significant update to landlord obligations, requiring landlords to repair or replace both smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. This regulation strengthens tenant safety, but can have implications for landlords.

A landlord in Wales trying to evict his tenants, found his case thrown out of court as he was unable to provide proof that there was a carbon monoxide alarm fitted at the property. This was missing from the inventory and subsequent property visits.

This case also emphasises that it’s not just about installing the alarms; landlords need to maintain proper documentation for proof. The absence of this can create significant legal challenges, as shown in this instance.

How do you send your paperwork to your tenants?

A landlord served a Section 21 notice on his tenants. The tenants informed him they would not be moving out so he went to a solicitor to prepare the court paperwork. The solicitor advised his paperwork was not in order and would have to re-issue the Section 21 notice again.

This was due to the paperwork not being issued in the correct way and the tenants not authorising to receive legal documentation via email.

This is when you absolutely need to have full confidence in yourself as a private landlord or your agent. Far too many times, I see landlords who think they are saving pounds by either going to the cheapest agent or doing it themselves, to lose thousands of pounds later down the road.

Rent arrears

Rent arrears are becoming a significant issue across England, with a notable rise in claims, particularly after the pandemic. The increase in rent prices post-Covid likely put a strain on many tenants’ ability to keep

PICTURED ABOVE

up with payments, and now that the rental prices have plateaued, it could be a sign that people are struggling to catch up.

The rise in claims by deposit schemes suggests landlords might be more frequently dealing with unpaid rent. This trend could be partly due to the ongoing economic challenges that many people are facing, including inflation and wage stagnation, which affect their ability to pay higher rents.

IN THE COURTS

HMO’s

Councils are targeting unlicensed HMO’s across the country. In the latest crackdown, a landlord and the managing agent were both fined for breaking the rules. The landlord was fined £10,000 and the agent £17,500.

Letting agent found guilty

A letting agent from Newport has been found guilty and awaiting sentencing for defrauding his landlords of over £80,000. Landlords reported not being paid any rent for nearly a year. It was also found that the agent was not protecting deposits, with landlords having to pay the tenants back out of their own pocket.

AN OFFER OF ADVICE

It’s clear that the lettings industry is undergoing significant changes, and staying ahead of the curve is becoming more difficult for landlords managing properties on their own. The proposed reforms, alongside the growing complexity of legal requirements, make it increasingly important for landlords to seek expert advice and services.

A single fine from the council or legal mishap can end up being far more expensive than the ongoing costs of engaging a professional agent. A good agent doesn’t just manage the day-to-day

responsibilities; they also help landlords navigate the ever-changing regulations, ensuring they stay compliant and avoid costly errors.

The team at Move On are committed to continuous learning and monitoring industry updates shows the value of professional property management. For landlords, that peace of mind and expertise can be incredibly valuable.

How to work the rich and saturated interiors trend

Deeper, moody colours and precious jewel tones are very of the moment, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

Despite being hugely popular since the early 2000s, grey gradients, muted palettes, minimalism and monochromatic colour schemes have fallen out of favour – with a newfound desire for richness and warmth a key feature.

Although this can be seen simply as an aesthetic change, Sophie Alberry-King, interior designer at City & Country, says the use of bold colouring in design – like jewel tones, greens, blues, reds and citrus hues – is a fun and individual way to express oneself.

On top of that, playing with shades and contrast can give you a more colourful living experience, highlights Alberry-King, both mentally and physically.

As a result, rich, vibrant colours are emerging as a defining trend in interior design, with a resurgence in loud feature walls and bright, sophisticated accents.

Think experimenting in new ways, injecting more personality into a space and reframing bold designs as a forward-thinking vision… rather than being aggressive and brash, suggests the designer.

“The interior design world has definitely undergone a shift, with a wave of bold colours making their way into interiors, creating spaces with depth, warmth, and character,” underlines Alberry-King.

“We’re using highly pigmented, eye-catching shades; from bright hues to more muted tones like deeper wine, olive and mustard variations.

“Eclectic interiors have also surged in popularity on TikTok – the trend for ‘bold chic’ interiors allows us to play with design conventions, and be a bit more adventurous with our projects.”

As she points out: “Psychologically, bright and saturated colours are known to influence one’s mood, and people are turning to more vibrant tones as a form of visual therapy at home.”

If bold colour is something you’re wanting to experiment with, start small at first, she advises. By bringing colour into the bathroom or entrance of your home with colourful tiles or a brightly painted cabinet, she says it’s possible to add a pop of colour without seeming overbearing.

“Adding colourful dishes and utensils is also a fun way to build up your colour palette, without choosing to paint your whole home cyan blue [a greenish blue hue].”

Alberry-King continues: “Whilst bold colours can invigorate a space, they require a balance to avoid overstimulation. To achieve this, it’s important to use vibrant tones strategically to create a harmonious living space.”

For example, she says focus on using contrasting, neutral tones of wood, creamy white and complementing tones on accent walls or trimmings.

“Statement furniture and curated décor pieces can also help to introduce colour piece by piece, without overpowering a room,” observes the designer.

“Introduce your bold bright colours through accessories such as deep green vases, wine-red hardback books, and royal blue cushions or curtains.”

She says City & Country’s in-house design team incorporate rich shades into show homes through accent pieces, with plush armchairs and decorative cushions complimenting the space. “With pops of colour to achieve a timeless aesthetic throughout… big colour palettes are here for the foreseeable.”

Perfectly placed, pairing bold colours with neutrals or softer tones creates harmony and ensures longevity in design. “The trend also encourages layering a mix of textures and patterns alongside bolder colours, adding depth and interest.”

For example, she says by combining a variety of materials such as wood, metal and textured wallpaper, you can create a visually dynamic space that feels cohesive rather than chaotic.

“With a consistent style and theme across your home, blending vibrant features with neutral elements will create a (surprisingly) calming balance.

LEFT
Harlow 3 Seater Sofa, Moss Green Classic Velvet, £599.99,

“Darker shades like rich browns, earthy moss greens, and deep burgundy hues complement the natural warmth of wood and fabrics like linen and boucle, creating a cosy atmosphere to a neutral backdrop.”

Indeed, colour psychology has always played a large part in interior design trends, notes Alberry-King. “But a reinvention of this psychology has arrived with the big and bright colours of 2025.

“Vibrant but harmonious settings create a new sense of serenity and self-expression by using the perfect ratio of colour and neutrals.”

Furthermore, she says the saturated colours trend is more than just a fleeting phase. “It’s a reflection of a society in flux, with people wishing to create their own sanctuaries and fully express themselves.

“The future is to live more vibrantly in our surroundings,” she adds.

Where to take a cruise holiday in 2025

These destinations are best seen by sea in the months ahead, says Sarah Marshall.

An easy, stress-free way to see multiple destinations without having to repack suitcases dozens of times, cruise holidays are becoming a way of holiday life for many. According to industry body Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), 2.3 million people went on a cruise in 2023 – up from 1.7 million the previous year – and increasing numbers of people are likely to set sail in the future.

The Mediterranean and Caribbean are obvious destinations, but as investment in infrastructure continues, ports of call are emerging all over the world. Overwhelmed by the options? These are some of the newest voyages of discovery…

The Arabian Gulf

Ornate architecture, ancient cultures and sense-arousing souks are some of the highlights attracting an increasing number of travellers to explore the Middle East. As part of a drive to embrace Western tourism, countries such as the UAE and Saudi Arabia have invested in new cruise terminals, ports and private islands – attracting more cruise companies to introduce itineraries. Saudi Arabia, for example, aims to attract 1.3 million cruise travellers by 2035. Although there are ongoing issues in the Suez Canal, elsewhere there is greater political stability.

From winter 2025, Celestyal’s newest ship, Celestyal Discovery, will operate short trips to Abu Dhabi, Doha and Sir Bani Yas Island between November and March, with prices starting from £249pp. Sister ship Celestyal Journey already operates a seven-night Desert Days voyage through the Arabian Gulf from £429pp. Lee Haslett, chief commercial officer at Celestyal, says: “We are now confident in becoming the go-to cruise specialists of the Arabian Gulf.”

The northern Nordics Hotter summers in the Mediterranean have sparked a trend for ‘coolcationing’ in the more comfortable climes of Finland, Sweden and Norway. While the Norwegian fjords have been popular for some time, there’s growing interest in summer midnight sun cruises to Norwegian town Honningsvåg, where guests can then travel by bus to the North Cape – the northernmost point in Europe.

Ships also present an affordable option for a multihop city break to Helsinki, Stockholm and Tallinn, with all food and board included in one price. Best Served Scandinavia has a five-day Belles of the Baltic trip from £925pp (with flights).

Winter on the water is possible too. Aurora displays promise to be stronger and more frequent as we approach the solar maximum – a key point of activity in the sun’s 11-year solar cycle – and one of the best ways to observe the phenomenon is from a ship.

Ambassador Cruise Line offers a 17-night sailing from £1,099pp, departing London Tilbury on March 20, venturing along Norway’s coastline beyond the Arctic Circle. Hurtigruten’s 12-day Astronomy Voyages (from £2,648pp) feature expert-led stargazing sessions and aurora workshops. If the aurora borealis is not visible from the ship, passengers will receive a complimentary six-day southbound or seven-day northbound Coastal Express voyage to compensate.

Africa

Famous for its wild interior of dense rainforest and vast open grasslands, Africa’s coastlines are now a focus of attention. Several companies are launching voyages along the eastern and lesser know western shores, making it possible to visit previously hard-to-reach locations in comfort.

“As ports develop and interest in sustainable tourism grows, this untapped market could become a global favourite,” says Emma Sanger-Horwell, head of cruise at Kenwood Travel.

Being part of the A&K Travel Group, with its deep roots in Africa, Crystal has crafted several immersive experiences on two new voyages. A 14-night trip from Cape Town, visiting Namibia, Angola, São Tomé and Benin costs from £5,200pp. On the other side of the continent, a 13-night trip along South Africa’s Garden Route to Durban and onward to Mozambique and Zanzibar costs from £6,300pp.

Japan

A world of ancient traditions, arresting scenery and brain-bending modern technology, the Land of the Rising Sun continues to soar in popularity. It’s easy to forget that the destination is in fact a vast archipelago, with more than 14,000 islands to explore by boat.

One of the best ways to experience sakura – when the famous cherry blossoms bloom – is by boat, visiting multiple destinations to maximise the short-lived displays flourishing at different stages. Abercrombie & Kent has a blow-the-budget 14-day Wonders of Japan cruise (from £20,240pp) spanning four major islands, timed to coincide with the sakura season.

Audley, meanwhile, combines a land and sea stay in a 24-day trip, including a 14-night Azamara cruise visiting 10 ports of call (from £12,100pp).

Best places to see spring displays of daffodils, tulips, bluebells and blossom

With the National Trust in Hampshire

Nothing beats nature for an uplifting and joyous experience. And spring is surely the ultimate season for moments like this.

With a big helping hand from our gardening teams who planted thousands of bulbs last autumn, National Trust gardens in Hampshire reveal lawns and borders packed with daffodils, jewel-coloured tulips and fragrant hyacinths.

Orchards reveal canopies of pink and white blossom, and in the woods nearby fragrant bluebells mingle with other wildflowers – tiny violets, celandines and wood anemones.

Here are the best places to see spring flowers at National Trust places in Hampshire. Displays vary every year; these photographs reflect displays in previous years:

DAFFODILS (LATE FEBRUARY TO APRIL)

This year our garden teams have planted many more late-flowering daffodils, to extend displays beyond early spring.

RIGHT

Mottisfont: daffodils cover the grass under Mottisfont’s giant plane trees and spread across the lawns. You’ll find more on show in the kitchen garden - look out for fragrant Sir Winston Churchill with clusters of double petalled flowers and orange centres, and the deliciously-scented waxy white narcissus White Lion.

Mottisfont guided garden walks: Spring is a lovely time to take a deeper dive into Mottisfont, on a free daily guided walk with our Garden Guides. From its medieval past to magnificent trees find out what’s on offer when you arrive.

The Vyne: pop by in early spring for cheery daffodil displays across the gardens – packing borders in the walled garden and carpeting the South Drive at the front of the house. There are fresh bunches for sale too, at the visitor reception point.

Hinton Ampner: is famous for its spring bulb colour; it’s a true plantsman’s garden. Soak up the sight of thousands of daffodils, with cream and yellow scented flowers, on show in the pretty walled kitchen garden and littering the tufty grass in the cherry orchard.

MAGNOLIA (MIDTO LATE MARCH)

Mottisfont: look out for the magnificent ‘umbrella’ of white magnolia by the stableyard. You can take a lovely selfie from one of the benches on the other side of the flint wall, with the flowers as a snowy backdrop behind you.

TULIPS (LATE MARCH TO LATE APRIL)

Hinton Ampner: this year’s tulip displays are a colour palette of pastels – a favourite with former owner Ralph Dutton. Look out for frilly-edged candy-pink Huis Ten Bosch and purple-blue Bleu Aimable in the sunken garden’s long borders. They are paired with fragrant daffodil ‘Thalia’ and clusters of bright blue forget-menots. You’ll find hundreds more tulips in the yew garden – soft pink Synaeda Amor, slender goblet-shaped Purple Dream and the large peach-pink flowerheads of Pink Impression, mingling with ivory wallflowers. There are nearly 1,000 tulip bulbs in pots too, around the gardens.

Mottisfont: the parterre in front of the house will be a sight for sore eyes – a mass of rich purple tulip Negrita, lilac-pink tulip Candy Prince and scented creamy-white narcissus Pueblo. Stroll up to the walled kitchen garden to find large apricot-pink cups of tulip Mystic van Eiji which has a rosy red streak, and the elegant gobletshaped violet tulip Maytime.

The Vyne: in the historic walled garden you’ll find a dazzling mix of tulip colour and varieties, including dark purple Queen of the Night, towering apricot-pink Menton and the flared creamy petals of Spring Green with their green stripe.

BLOSSOM (BETWEEN LATE MARCH AND LATE APRIL)

Mottisfont: from late March, Mount Fuji cherry trees burst into flower in Mottisfont’s orchard, releasing a honey fragrance that makes them a favourite with visiting bees. In the tussocky grass you’ll spot splashes of colour from naturalised narcissi, species tulips and snakeshead fritillaries. In the walled garden gnarly fruit trees display candy-pink apple buds and white pear blossom.

Hinton Ampner: frothy pale pink and white Japanese cherry blossom gradually unfurls in Hinton’s cherry orchard. You’ll find more blossom beside the ornamental pond, and in the walled kitchen garden beautifully trained espaliered fruit trees bear tight clusters of pink and white petals.

The Vyne: the orchard reveals delicate blossom displays from heritage plum, pear and apple trees - a much-needed food source for our spring pollinators. There are arching fans of fruit blossom in the walled garden and displays of almond-scented ‘bird’ cherry blossom in the wild garden.

Sandham Memorial Chapel: some of the apple trees in Sandham’s orchard are over 90 years old. You can picnic on benches close to the trees for a lovely springtime experience. Behind the chapel, young crab apple trees line the garden path with a mass of white blossom.

BLUEBELLS (MID-APRIL TO EARLY MAY)

Hinton Ampner: a gentle one hour stroll across Hinton’s parkland takes you into ancient woods, transformed into a sea of blue as scented native bluebells fringe woodland paths. This really is an amazing spectacle.

The Vyne: if you follow the path beyond the garden at The Vyne you’ll discover beautiful beech woods. In late spring they’re awash with native bluebells.

Mottisfont: there are some terrific opportunities for bluebell-spotting on Mottisfont’s estate walk, which actually starts in a bluebell wood a few minutes’ drive from the garden – at Spearywell.

Always bring wet weather footgear or check terrain conditions with property before setting off on a woodland walk.

If you’re looking for a letting agent who’s fast, fearless, and utterly unforgettable, then Aleina Cameron’s Letting Agents is the only name you need to know. Not only does Aleina fill properties faster than you can say “Why is she wearing that?”, but she does it while sporting a full-body wetsuit, a leather gimp mask, and fingerless gloves. Why? That’s a secret she’ll never tell. But does it get results? You bet your perfectly rented property it does.

There’s just something about being shown around a flat by a wetsuit-clad, mask-wearing powerhouse that makes tenants sign their contracts without hesitation. Maybe it’s the sheer confidence, maybe it’s mild confusion, or maybe they just know you don’t mess with Aleina Cameron.

Why Choose Aleina Cameron’s Letting Agents?

Lightning-Fast Lettings – Properties rented out before other agents have even finished their morning coffee.

Top-Tier Tenants Only – No rent dodgers, no troublemakers, just solid, responsible people who know better than to test Aleina’s patience.

Total Property Management – From maintenance to compliance, Aleina handles it all, probably while adjusting her wetsuit and plotting world domination.

Strict Rent Collection Policy – Tenants who don’t pay? They don’t stay. Instead, they get turned into glove puppets, and Aleina puts on a dramatic, one-woman puppet show for the landlords as a cautionary tale to others. Some say it’s disturbing. Others say it’s the best entertainment they’ve had in years.

So, if you want a letting agent who gets results, respects your investment, and isn’t afraid to get a little theatrical, call Aleina Cameron’s Letting Agents today. Because in this game, you pay your rent – or you become part of the show.

Tom Hanks showcases wild wonders of the Americas in a new blockbuster BBC nature series

Sarah Marshall speaks to executive producer Mike Gunton about working with the Hollywood star and the bucket list destinations visited.

Sir David Attenborough is Britain’s undisputed national treasure, but across the Atlantic another charismatic, captivating figure is emerging as the voice of natural history in America.

TV producer Mike Gunton recalls mentally identifying the talent several years ago. Sat in an office pitching to Hollywood execs, he recalls scribbling down a name in his notes.

“I’d just finished working on a project with David Attenborough, and I was thinking, ‘Who’s the equivalent? Who does everybody want to be with? Who does everybody trust? Who does everybody want to hear?’ It’s got to be Tom Hanks.”

Several years later, the multi award-winning actor can be heard narrating a new 10-part natural world series sweeping the enormous breadth of the Americas.

Covering two continents and spanning multiple ecosystems, the ambitious show was filmed over the course of five years and 180 expeditions.

“As far as nature is concerned, this is one super landmass,” says Gunton, creative director of Factual and the Natural History Unit for BBC Studios, whose past accolades include Planet Earth II and Dynasties.

“It’s the only place that reaches right up into the Arctic and right down into the Antarctic. It splits oceans and has the Tropics of Cancer, the Tropic of Capricorn, the Equator and every type of habitat.”

An American bison | BBC Studios/NBC/ Donald M. Jones/PA

Commissioned for an initial US release, the blockbuster series intentionally aims to instil a sense of national pride in the destinations featured. Entertaining whilst being educational, it’s a visual safari and Tom Hanks is very much along for the ride.

“It feels like Tom is sitting here with his arm around you, saying, ‘I’ve just seen this most incredible thing’ – rather than a voice of God saying this happens here and this happens there,” adds Gunton.

From bison on the Great Plains to polar bears in Hudson Bay, countless bucket-list wildlife experiences feature along with behaviours captured for the first time –including several male blue whales racing along the coast of California, a sequence which Gunton highlights as one of his favourites.

“This is an animal that is the size of a jumbo jet, almost going at 30 miles an hour and then leaping out of the water. That’s a lot of energy. We don’t really know why they were doing it, but it’s incredible. One of the most impressive animals of all time doing something that is some of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen.”

Mike Gunton and Tom Hanks in the studio | BBC Studios/NBC/ Austin Hargrave/PA

But it’s not just the animals that shine.

“You don’t just go to the giant redwood forest to see the giant redwoods,” Gunton points out. “You go there to experience the whole environment. We work very hard to invoke the character of individual places. These aren’t just locations.”

In every episode, efforts are made to make the wild world feel relatable. At a time when political upheavals in the USA threaten to unravel years of environmental protection efforts, connecting with audiences is more important than ever before.

“It’s a good time to remind people that this is special,” admits Gunton diplomatically. “You’ve got something incredible here, it should be treasured. But it’s vulnerable. It’s like that Joni Mitchell song. You don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone.

“Tom feels that very strongly as well. He was keen to make sure that we reminded the audience that these wonders are on their doorstep, but they’re fragile, they’re precious, we have to treasure them.”

Mike Gunton shares several standout sequences from the series…

Pumas in Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile

“It’s hard to find real wilderness, but this is definitely real wilderness. There’s been a lot of protection of pumas and numbers are increasing but the reason why it’s hard to find them is because they’re brilliant at camouflage.

“If you’d asked me, I’d say filming pumas was one of the hardest shoots, just because physically it’s so demanding. As a filmmaker, it’s tough because you can’t go in vehicles. You have to do it pretty much all on foot.

Now, if you ask Tom Hanks [about the toughest shoot], he’d say, filming army ants in the Amazon, because they want to bite you.”

Blue whales in California, USA

“Blue whales are notoriously difficult to film – this is the biggest animal that’s ever lived. They’re mysterious. We know very little about them.

“We found this one camera operator who had incredible access to a secret location, and he managed to film not just one, not just two or three, but four blue whales.”

Burrowing owls, Florida, USA

“The natural habitat of these tiny owls is close-cropped prairies, where they can see over the grass for predators. But they’ve moved into human habitats where people beautifully mow their lawns.

“Males build these burrows and do a bobbing dance to attract a mate. Our story is that we join this community of owls, all of whom are paired off. There’s one guy who was too late to the party, and he mournfully does this little dance. We do a kind of Sleepless in Seattle montage where the days go by, the sun sets, the sun rises.

“He does one last dance and he hears a female. She’s also late to the party, and he goes into a hyperdrive. It’s hilarious. There’s this lovely moment where they meet, and she turns and does this big wink at him.”

Blue-footed boobies, Mexico

“The story here is one of infidelity. To attract a mate, males do a dance and show off their blue feet. We filmed a courting pair, but when the male goes off to find food, the female’s head is turned by another male who has even bluer feet, and she starts to sort of flirt with him.

“The other male then comes back, and they have a bit of a barney. We gave Tom a script but encouraged him to extemporize. He does it perfectly exclaiming, ‘He’s not gonna put up with that’.

“It’s so unlike a narrator. That’s what is unique about this project. There are these moments where, as an audience, you’re brought into the shows through Tom almost the breaking the fourth wall.”

Watch The Americas from 6:30pm Sunday, March 2 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

How vanity units are taking the spotlight in bathroom upgrades

Boosting your basin with surface and storage space makes a sleek feature, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

It’s the centre of attention for your beauty maintenance, skincare routine, men’s grooming and oral hygiene – and deserving of a talking point in your bathroom makeover.

Whether it’s serving as a stylish focal point or practical storage solution, there’s no question vanity units are the backbone of bathroom design, highlights Victoria Harrison, editor at home and design platform, Houzz.

She says given their functional versatility and statementmaking potential, bathroom vanity units are a priority amongst revamps. In fact, Harrison says two-thirds of homeowners upgrade their basin during bathroom renovations, according to the 2024 Houzz UK Bathroom Trends Study.

From elevating your bathroom style to maximising storage space and surface area, these are the features trending in bathroom vanity units…

Contemporary style

“Perhaps unsurprisingly, outdated style is a top trigger for bathroom renovations,” underlines Harrison.

“Contemporary style has continued to lead as the goto choice, and to achieve this look, bathroom designers are incorporating streamlined vanity unit features, such as flat-panelled doors and minimalist fixtures.”

RIGHT
Contemporary Style: Streamlined vanity features complement a bold contemporary bathroom scheme in this bathroom by Absolute Project Management | Absolute Project Management/Helen Rayner of Moon Street Studio/PA

Jo Sampson, design director at Absolute Project Management says: “Contemporary bathroom remodels are popular among clients and in many cases, vanity units are a key design feature – they maximise storage and complement both minimalist and bold contemporary schemes. “Thankfully, the wide range of vanity units available means you don’t have to sacrifice sleek style in the name of storage.”

The key is to choose pared-back cabinets with minimal design details and clean lines, says Sampson, with finishes that complement the rest of the fittings.

Subtle colours

While many stick to neutrals in their bathrooms, Harrison says those looking to add a pop of colour often turn to their vanity units. She says subtle hues are among the most popular colour choices, with one in five choosing wood, followed by grey, blue, green and brown.

Indeed, as the popularity with wood continues to grow – it’s durable, stylish and eco-friendly – Roxi Zeeman, designer and founder of Souq.Studio, says it’s a timeless choice. “Not only do they pair beautifully with a neutral colour palette, but they add texture, warmth and character to the space. For a touch of sophistication, incorporate unlacquered brass fixtures and hardware,” suggests Zeeman.

VANITY

Customisation

When it comes to customisation and individuality, Harrison says beyond the aesthetic appeal, investing in a bespoke vanity unit can enhance your bathroom’s value – with the added bonus of catering to your specific needs.

“Custom vanity units are increasingly popular, as they’re made to perfectly fit your bathroom space – and allow you to customise storage solutions,” outlines Amit Malhotra, founder of Aflux Designs Ltd.

“In addition to their functional benefits, custom vanity units give homeowners an opportunity to showcase their unique style.”

Organisational elements

With the desire to declutter and create an organised space, ample storage is key…

“If space allows, it can be useful to have a mix of drawers and cupboards for varying storage needs, but if you’re tight on space, look for dividers and inserts to keep things organised,” recommends Harrison. “Some units also have compact shelving and hangers on the insides of doors, helping to keep things in their place.”

Moreover, when it comes to bathroom remodels, focusing on fluid and efficient use of space with wallmounted vanity units is also a priority. “For compact bathrooms that have limited storage, smart vanity designs, such as wall-hung varieties with built-in organisers offer space-saving solutions while creating the illusion of a larger space,” suggests Paul Duffy, director and architect at BetterPAD.

Ambient lighting

“A well-lit bathroom is crucial for usability when it comes to daily routines, but ambient lighting can also be a gamechanger for bathrooms,” highlights Harrison. “By pairing an illuminated vanity mirror with the soft lighting of surrounding wall sconces or pendants, you can transform your bathroom into a cosy, inviting space,” she adds.

Linsey Skepper, founder and creative director of Muchmore Design agrees: “The vanity area is an essential zone for practical task lighting, but with the right placement, vanity lighting can also contribute to ambient lighting.”

As she points out, wall sconces, for example, extend and spread the light onto your face, but they also create softer illumination. And if you’re looking to create a more intimate space, diffused lighting is a win-win.

See more of Palace House than ever before For history lovers, Palace House is the historic home of the Montagu family and newly redecorated private rooms will be to open to visitors in spring.

The work is currently being completed, and visitors will be able look around the set of themed rooms which were once part of Edward, Lord Montagu’s private apartment

Lord Montagu said: “The design of these furbished bedrooms and bathrooms comes from a very fruitful collaboration with the interior design course at Solent University in Southampton, whose students came up with some wonderful ideas to ensure that each room has a distinctly different theme.”

The students have taken their inspiration from the gardens of Palace House, Montagu family history and the Solent which borders the estate. The new bedrooms and bathrooms will be unveiled in time for Easter visits and entry will be part of a ticket to Beaulieu.

How to introduce Feng Shui into your home decor

Usher in wealth, health and good luck in the Year of the Snake, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

When it comes to positive energy and feel-good vibes, taking a closer look at your decorative scheme can influence your wellbeing, happiness and more.

Indeed, the design principles of the ancient Chinese art of Feng Shui have harmony and balance at its core.

Think rearranging your furniture, blending natureinspired hues with key elements, and ensuring everything aligns – which are all central to boosting good fortune and wealth.

And with the zodiac Year of the Snake tied to change and renewal, there couldn’t be a better time to enhance your surroundings.

“The year of the Wood Snake brings the possibility of ‘shedding’ our skin, metaphorically, to let go of what no longer serves us,” explains Diane Shillito, Feng Shui consultant, and member of the Feng Shui Society.

“This allows us, if we choose, to take a new form – it can be a time of mystery, creativity and transformation.”

In relation to Feng Shui, it’s the perfect time to let go of clutter and have a clear out, says Shillito.

“A bit like the traditional spring clean my mum used to do… this removes ‘stale stuck energies,’ and space for more movement of energies in the home to support creativity and transformation.”

She continues: “The effects of Feng Shui can be profound. Specific object orientation can promote

physical and mental wellbeing in the home – inhabitants benefit from the harmony and connection fostered by a well-balanced environment.”

Here, Shillito has teamed up with Barratt London to share her top tips to help good things happen, and fortune smile on you….

The front door

“‘Wealth does not enter the dirty door.’ This ancient Chinese proverb directly relates the cleanliness of your front door with your prosperity,” highlights Shillito. “By keeping the pathway clear of leaves, rubbish and bins, energy can flow more easily towards your front door, like a stream.”

The living room

“The lounge is a space where we can spend quality time with loved ones, to unwind.” To foster an environment of comfort and peace, she says to consider the following Feng Shui practices…

“To enhance family interaction and a relaxed atmosphere, incorporate different light sources within the room, and maximise natural light by opening your blinds and curtains daily.”

These may be a combination of floor lamps, table lamps and overhead lighting to create different effects for different levels of social interaction, suggests Shillito.

“Natural light and fresh air are invaluable to maintain a positive energy flow so, open windows regularly and keep them clean and unobstructed.”

“A mirror can be a beneficial distraction from the TV when placed above a fireplace or positioned to reflect a beautiful view, such as the outside landscape or a piece of artwork,” outlines Shillito.

“It’s worth noting that mirrors amplify energy and enhance the room’s perceived size, creating a feeling of abundance.”

The

kitchen

The kitchen is an essential space in your home that can significantly impact your health and wellbeing, underlines Shillito. “By applying Feng Shui principles, you can create a harmonious environment that promotes nourishment, vitality, and positive energy.

“A window allows natural light and fresh air to enter the space, clearing and circulating energy to promote a fresh and positive atmosphere.”

She says to try to incorporate a range of light sources, including overhead lights, main lights, and undercupboard lighting. “This variety ensures the kitchen can be well-lit and welcoming, enhancing an individual’s visibility and a positive flow of energy.”

Integrate the five elements to create a harmonious kitchen design… Water – represented by the sink.

• Fire – represented by the hob/oven.

• Wood – found in cabinetry, floor or furniture.

• Metal – through appliances, hardware, oven/hob, granite/marble counters or metal bar stools.

• Earth – Found in colour schemes, terracotta tiles, fabrics and flooring.

The bedroom

The bedroom can be a sanctuary for rest, nurturing, love and relationships…

“Ensure the bed is accessible on both sides, rather than pushed against a wall, advises Shillito. “Avoid further solo furniture in the bedroom when you intend to enhance your relationship with others – and not your relationship with yourself.”

She says it’s common to have a mirror in the bedroom, but to retain your integrity and supportive sleep, ensure your reflection is not visible from your sleeping place. A dressing mirror needs to reflect your whole body and being, to enhance your energetic support.”

The bedroom can be the focus for your desired relationship, notes Shillito. “But things that don’t serve this purpose can be removed. This may include workfrom-home items, like desks or monitors, as well as any gym equipment,” she adds.

Loft conversions are the secret to a bigger, better home

Thinking about moving because you need more space? Think again! World of Lofts, based in sunny Bournemouth, has a much smarter solution – turn that dusty old attic into a fabulous new living space! Whether you fancy an extra bedroom, a stylish home office, or even a secret hideaway from the kids (we won’t tell), a loft conversion is the perfect way to upgrade your home without the hassle of moving.

More space, less hassle

Let’s be honest – moving house is a nightmare. Packing up your life, dealing with estate agents, and paying a small fortune in fees? No thanks! A loft conversion gives you all the space you need without the stress of househunting and mortgage madness.

Adds value to your home

It’s not just about extra space – it’s about extra value too! A well-executed loft conversion can add up to 20% to your home’s value, making it a smart investment for the future. So, whether you’re staying put or thinking ahead, it’s a win-win!

Quick & easy – job done in just 4 weeks!

Think a loft conversion takes forever? Not with World of Lofts! Their expert team can complete most projects in just four weeks, meaning you’ll be enjoying your brandnew space before you know it. No months of disruption – just a quick, stress-free transformation!

No planning permission? No problem!

Worried about planning permission? In most cases, you don’t even need it! Loft conversions usually fall under permitted development, meaning less paperwork and more action. Of course, the team at World of Lofts will handle all the nitty-gritty details, so you don’t have to.

A budget-friendly alternative to moving

Moving house isn’t just a hassle – it’s expensive. Stamp duty, legal fees, removal costs, it all adds up. A loft conversion, on the other hand, is a fraction of the price and gives you exactly what you need – more space, without the stress.

Feeling handy? Try the DIY option!

For those who love a bit of DIY, World of Lofts offers a unique option – you can take on the project yourself! This approach allows the loft to be externally completed while providing the first stage sign-off from building control. It’s a great option to fit within anyone’s budget, giving you the flexibility to manage costs while still benefiting from expert guidance.

So, why go through the stress of moving when you can stay put and level up instead? Give World of Lofts a call today and start making the most of the space you already have. Don’t move on – move up!

Affordable luxury arrives in Dorset with Drench Outlet

We talk to Elliot Lees-Bell, Managing Director of Beyond Retail, about the launch of the Drench Outlet on Nuffield Road and what it means for the brand.

Congratulations on the opening of the Drench Outlet on Nuffield Road! For those who may not be familiar with Drench, can you give us a bit of background on the brand?

Drench is a bathroom retailer, and one of 3 brands that make up our wider business, Beyond Retail. Collectively we sell around £50m worth of bathroom, kitchen and heating products each year, to all corners of the country. We’re born, bred and based right here in Dorset, and we’ll be 15 years old next year.

Drench came about at a time when every online bathroom retailer was focused on cheap and cheerful products. We knew that across all markets, consumers were increasingly turning to online retail, even for big-ticket items. But we also knew that people really, really care about their home. They want it to look special and feel special. But no-one was really doing this online.

CONTACT

01202 925495

So we wanted to take all the best parts of bricks and mortar bathroom retail – 3D design, genuine expertise, great service –and combine that with the benefits of online retail. And that’s worked incredibly well for us. People come to Drench because they want great value. But great value isn’t just about price – it’s a big part of it, but it’s also about having a really outstanding range of high quality, design-led products, and great service and support. All of it matters.

Our new Drench Outlet was the next logical step…

What can customers expect when they walk into the new Drench Outlet in Poole? Great products, incredible prices and excellent service. As an online retailer sending out thousands of products each week, we tend to get back a small percentage of products with a slight mark or scuff, or simply a lack of packaging. We can’t sell them online as new, but we can offer them at really low prices in our local area.

SHOWROOM

Drench Outlet, 27-31 Nuffield Road, Nuffield Industrial Estate, Poole BH17 0RU

We also have a large selection of our very best-selling products on display, with new stock ready to take away, or we can deliver. And we’re also bringing click & collect to our local area, making it easy to shop online and then collect from Drench Outlet. We’re also looking to strengthen and grow relationships with local trade customers – making it really easy to shop with Drench, and giving them real confidence around recommending Drench to their own customers.

Who is the outlet designed for—do you cater to both retail customers and trade professionals?

Yes, absolutely! Everyone is welcome. We can support and advise homeowners in all sorts of ways, and trade professionals can sign up for a Drench Trade account to instantly access their discount both in-store and online – that’s on top of any sale prices too!

Ultimately, we want to be a trusted partner in the local trade community and a convenient Drench hub for any customer looking to add some affordable luxury into their home.

Follow the outlet at Facebook.com/ drenchoutlet and visit www.drench.co.uk/ trade for more information on signing up to a trade account.

Celebrate cherry blossom season by planting a cherry tree of your own

You don’t have to go all the way to Japan to enjoy glorious cherry blossoms. Here’s how to grow a cherry tree at home.

Nothing says spring quite like the white and pink of cherry blossom against a bright blue sky. Revered in Japan, where the prolific Japanese cherry (sakura) are a huge hanami (‘flower viewing’) attraction and meteorologists forecast when the hotly anticipated blooms will begin, the cherry blossom season in the UK and Ireland typically starts towards the end of March, with great clouds of colour appearing.

For gardeners wanting to bring cherry blossom into their own gardens, there’s an ornamental cherry tree for every taste and garden size, whether you want a large spreading tree, a narrow upright, or dwarf weeping form. The flowers range from white to pink with single or double rounds of petals.

Emma Allen, shares some tips on how to grow these beautiful trees and choose a suitable cultivar.

Where to put a cherry tree

Despite their delicate looking blooms, these tough trees can tolerate a variety of soil types, especially chalky (alkaline) soils, although do best in full sun and sheltered from strong winds to protect the blossom.

They prefer a moist well-drained soil, so although they don’t want to sit too wet, they don’t like to dry out in summer, especially in the first few years when they are establishing their root system.

RIGHT

When to plant

Trees are usually planted bare-root between November and March, but you can plant container grown trees any time of year. Summer is best avoided as you will need to ensure they are adequately watered in dry, warm weather.

How to plant

Dig a hole larger than the root system of the tree and add a layer of organic matter such as manure or compost to the base of the hole. Ensure the tree is planted at the same level it was originally growing, ie, the top of the root system where it joins the stem is level with the soil surface. Then back fill the hole with the removed soil and mix with more organic matter.

If the tree is larger than an unbranched whip (a small, unbranched tree), support it with a strong stake and tree ties. If planting in a lawn, you could remove a circular piece of lawn around the tree so you don’t need to mow too close. You can mulch this with compost or wood chippings.

Size and shapes to consider

Some ornamental cherries eventually form a medium to large spreading tree. One of the best is Prunus x juddii which can reach more than 12m in height and 8m broad in time and has single pale pink flowers, or Prunus ‘Ichiyo’ which can reach 8m and has double shell pink flowers borne in pendulous clusters.

Others have an upright columnar form, such as Prunus ‘Amanogawa’ which would suit a smaller garden. Although it can reach 4-8m height, it won’t get broader than 3m, and carries delicately fragrant semi-double pale pink flowers.

My favourites are the weeping forms which work well on a slope or rock garden – or anywhere really. Prunus pendula ‘Pendula Rosea’ is a small tree (up to 4m) with graceful arching pendulous branches and single pale pink flowers.

I also recommend the excellent dwarf form of Prunus incisa ‘Kojo-no-mai’ AGM which has unusual zig-zag branches, and works well in a container.

LEFT

Early and late blossom types

Some of the earliest blossom actually starts in late autumn or early winter, with the pale pink semi-double flowers of Prunus x subhirtella ‘Autumnalis Rosea’.

However, we usually think of cherry blossom appearing between March and April. Earlier flowering cultivars (midlate March) include the stunning Prunus ‘Accolade’ which has dark pink buds opening to profuse semi-double pink flowers; Prunus ‘The Bride’ which is a small rounded tree with large petalled pure white single flowers; and the pale pink/white flowering Prunus x yedoensis.

You can extend the cherry blossom season with late bloomers (mid-late April), including the stunning Prunus ‘Shogetsu’ which is smothered in showy double pure white flowers, or the pale pink blossom of Prunus ‘Shizuka’.

More cherry benefits

They don’t just have gorgeous spring blossom, most cherries have fantastic autumn colour. Prunus ‘Ichiyo’ turns orange/red, while others have beautiful peeling bark, such as Prunus serrula or purple leaves – Prunus ‘Royal Burgundy’.

Resin bound; Stylish, strong & sustainable

Enhance your property’s curb appeal with a bespoke, long-lasting resin bound driveway or patio.

When considering an upgrade to your driveway or patio, resin bound surfaces offer numerous advantages over traditional block paving and tarmac. Colourstone, a reputable local company, specialises in providing high-quality resin bound solutions tailored to your needs.

Resin bound surfaces are renowned for their elegant and customisable appearance. With a wide variety of colours and textures, you can design a driveway or patio that complements your home’s style, whether modern or traditional. Resin bound surfaces can even include decorative borders or unique patterns, giving your driveway a bespoke finish.

Durability and maintenance

Resin bound driveways are highly resistant to cracking and weather damage due to their flexibility. They also retain their colour and texture, even after years of exposure to the elements. Additionally, resin bound surfaces are low-maintenance. They resist weed growth, are easy to clean, and require

minimal upkeep to stay in great condition. A quick sweep and occasional rinse are typically all that is needed.

For added peace of mind, Colourstone offers up to a 20-year guarantee on all installations, ensuring long-lasting performance and durability.

Permeability and environmental benefits

One of the standout features of resin bound surfaces is their permeability. This allows water to drain naturally through the surface, preventing puddles and reducing water runoff into drains. This permeability makes them an excellent choice for areas prone to heavy rain or flooding. Additionally, many resin materials are sourced from natural stones, making them a greener option.

Comparison with block paving and tarmac

While block paving and tarmac have been traditional choices, they come with certain drawbacks. Block paving is prone to weed growth in the joints and can suffer from

displacement over time. Tarmac, though functional, offers a more uniform and utilitarian appearance and is more prone to cracking and potholes, especially in extreme weather conditions. In contrast, resin bound surfaces provide a seamless, durable, and aesthetically pleasing alternative.

Why choose Colourstone?

Colourstone is a family-run business with over 20 years of experience in the resin industry. They pride themselves on reliability, customer satisfaction, and attention to detail. Their innovative design, attentive preparation, and smooth resin finish ensure a high-quality result for every project. With a wide range of designs and specifications, Colourstone can transform your driveway or patio into a stunning and functional space.

In summary, opting for a resin bound driveway or patio offers enhanced aesthetics, durability, low maintenance, and environmental benefits over traditional block paving and tarmac. With Colourstone’s expertise, you can achieve a beautiful and long-lasting surface that complements your home perfectly.

THE ORIGINALS - RENAULT’S NEW SERVICE FOR ENTHUSIASTS AND COLLECTORS

The Originals Renault la Collection is launching a new initiative with a range of services for collectors of historic Renault vehicles. Available from a new website (https://theoriginals-services. renault.com/), these services are aimed at enthusiasts all over the world, providing them with solutions to service, repair and restore their classic cars.

At the same time, the brand is announcing the certification of 25 Renault after-sales sites in 2025. These sites will cover 80% of France, with the aim of enabling all collectors to find an expert less than 100 km from their home. Eight sites are already open to collectors. Backed by experts from the Renault network, the initiative is set to be deployed outside France over the next few years.

Arnaud Belloni, Renault’s Global Chief Branding Officer for Renault said “We are deploying new services developed specifically for enthusiasts and collectors of classic Renault vehicles, allowing them to service, restore and maintain their automotive treasures. It’s a way of protecting our shared automotive heritage, so that we can pass it on to future generations.”

In 2022 Renault set up a service to verify vehicle compliance, enabling owners to obtain a classic vehicle registration document, alongside certificates showing the date on which their vehicles left the factory, with the chassis number, engine and gearbox numbers, colours and options.

Today, collectors can also find spare parts through a network of Renault after-sales sites, selected for their expertise in classic vehicles, as well as through the brand’s long-standing partners specialising in

areas such as sports cars, upholstery and mainstream cars.

Further, 50 repair manuals from the Renault archives are available free of charge on the new site, alongside a number of online educational tutorials to help collectors service and repair their classic Renault cars.

The Originals Renault Garage is rolling out this service in France with a network of eight sites that are already trained and ready to welcome customers. Ultimately the objective is to gradually expand this service to 25 sites across France, covering 80% of the country, enabling collectors to find an expert within 100 km of their home. The next step will be to expand this offering internationally, extending the network of after-sales sites to other countries.

ISUZU DMAX – GO ANYWHERE PRACTICALITY

When you think of a pick-up it’s usually as a practical vehicle for tradesmen or perhaps a dual work and family vehicle, capable of sporting adventures and other family activities. One thing that is perhaps overlooked is the off-road capability and based on my recent experience the latest Isuzu DMAX is particularly impressive in this regard.

Whether on a building site or estate the off-road capabilities of these vehicles can prove a useful, and in some cases, essential factor in the purchasing decision. With selectable all-wheel-drive and a wading depth of 800mm it’s got the capability to keep going when the terrain gets tough.

The DMAX is available in the All-Purpose range and the Utility business line-up with all bar the cheapest single cab utility model coming with four-wheel-drive as standard. It’s a selectable system via rotary dial on the dashboard so very easy to use. DMAX’s rough terrain mode and rear differential lock, along with a traditional ladder chassis

means it can genuinely cover rocky, rutted, water logged and muddy ground with relative ease. Good entry and departure angles add to its capability off road.

Standard fare, even on the entry level utility models, include such items as automatic lights, main beam assist, automatic wipers, heated door mirrors, 8-inch colour touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, air conditioning, cruise control and a ‘damped’ tailgate. Bear in mind these are all standard on the lead-in utility model that starts from £32,916.

Move further up the range and the equipment levels climb to encompass

the likes of power adjustment including lumbar support on the driver’s seat, heated seats, dual zone air conditioning, leather upholstery, alloy wheels, dimming rear view mirror, keyless entry and engine start plus front and rear parking sensors.

Power comes from a well-proven 1.9-litre, 4-cylinder turbo-diesel developing 164PS, not that much when you consider the size of the vehicle, but crucially lots of low-down torque from just 2000 rpm.

Although it takes a leisurely 12.7 seconds to the benchmark 62 mph it actually doesn’t feel like it’s struggling and is more than capable of maintaining the cut and thrust of everyday traffic.

Despite being the same engine as in the previous version Isuzu appear to worked some magic on the refinement as it sounds and feels all together smoother and more refined. If you want an alternative to a go anywhere SUV, that’s arguably more practical, then the DMAX could prove a winner.

BMW X3 –AS YOU WOULD EXPECT, REFINED AND SMOOTH

It’s sometimes easy to forget, when so many companies offer SUVs, that amongst the newer entrants to the SUV market there are some manufacturers who have some long serving models. BMW is a case in point with their X3. It has been in the sales brochures since 2003 and remains hugely popular amongst mid-sized SUV buyers. It’s easy to see why as it offers space, practicality and, despite having the usual boxy SUV design, has more than a dash of style.

In its latest form the range offers plug-in hybrid along with petrol and diesel options that have mild hybrid assistance. Prices start from £49,495 with three trim levels –X-Line, M Sport and M models.

Power largely comes from a 2.0-litre petrol or diesel engine in three power outputs, 197 hp diesel, 208 and 299 hp petrol and a 6-cylinder 3.0-litre petrol developing 398 hp. Performance ranges from 7.8 seconds to just 4.6 seconds to the benchmark 62 mph. All versions come with either mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid with the latter offering a stated 55 miles pure electric driving depending on driving style and conditions.

Even being pessimistic about pure electric range the X3 figure suggests most drivers would complete an urban commute on pure electric power. With a home charger that’s economical commuting whether to work or on the school run. It’s also worth remembering that if you don’t have access to a home charger then PHEVs by

their nature don’t take very long to charge. Therefore, unlike a full EV you’re not waiting at the charging point drinking coffee and buying unnecessary snacks! There’s also no range anxiety.

Standard fare on the X3 is good, although like all German marques those additional ticks in the option boxes can prove costly. Power tailgate, air conditioning, LED headlights, power front sports seats, wireless phone charging and cruise control are amongst the standard features across the range.

The X3 drives as you would expect of a BMW, refined, smooth and, even at its lowest power output, with verve when your right foot prods the accelerator. It’s a comfortable ride and despite its size handling is very decent too. The interior is not so much of a success in this writer’s view. It no longer feels special as BMWs once did, with a material quality that could have come from any mid-range car maker. Thankfully you also buy a BMW for the driving experience, and even in entry level form the X3 still delivers.

ALL-NEW MAZDA6 ELECTRIC UNVEILED

Mazda has revealed its new EV for the European market at the Brussels Motor Show. An electric hatchback with a fastback saloon style, the Mazda6e will go on sale in left-hand drive European markets this year before arriving in UK dealers in the first half of 2026.

An all-new mid-sized electric car, the Mazda6e brings a new take to the wellregarded internal combustion engine powered Mazda6, which across three generations from 2002 to 2023 was a popular model with European and UK customers.

Available with two powertrain options to allow for customers differing preferences, the Mazda6e is offered with a choice of 68.8kWh or 80kWh battery. The 68.8kWh version offers a range of up to 300miles and with 200kW DC charging (if you can find one) it charges from 10 to 80 per cent in 22 minutes. The electric motor delivers 258ps for a 0-62mph performance of 7.6 seconds.

For customers prioritising longer range usage the 80kWh version enables a range of up to 345miles and with 244ps reaches 62mph in 7.8secs. Both versions produce the same 320Nm of torque with a rear-wheel drive layout. The longer range 80kWh Mazda6e will charge from 10 to 80 per cent in 45 minutes and like the smaller battery version supports DC rapid charging.

Design details of note include frameless doors, a bold lighting signature and integrated door handles - all of which create a modern appearance. At the front there are new glowing signature wing lights around the grille, dynamic illumination and the lighting also indicates charge status.

At the rear the Mazda6e’s stylish rear lamp design and horizontal taillight bar ensure a light signature as distinctive as the front, while newly designed Mazda lettering replaces the brand logo badge at the rear of the car. Another unique for Mazda feature is the electronically extendable rear spoiler.

Inside, the Mazda6e’s cabin has a panoramic roof and premium materials feature throughout both the available trim levels: Takumi and Takumi Plus. Takumi models will feature beige or black artificial leather, while Takumi Plus offers premium tan Nappa leather. Mazda have always had a premium feel to their interiors even if they are sometimes, arguably, not aesthetically exciting.

Prices for the Mazda6e will be announced nearer the launch date.

Kwoklyn Wan: This is how you make Chinese food easy to cook at home

Lauren Taylor chats to the chef about his getting classical umami flavours in home cooking.

Food from your favourite local Chinese takeaway might be comforting and familiar, but due to the speed it’s cooked – with a lot of deep frying – and cost-saving ingredients, it’s not the healthiest.

“Everything’s pretty much deep fried because it’s the speed of cooking,” says chef and restaurateur Kwoklyn Wan. “If people are able to take the time and get some nice ingredients, you can actually make really nice food at home that tastes very similar, if not exactly the same, as their Chinese takeaway flavours. But it’s not got all the horrible nasties in there.”

Wan – who’s brother is fashion consultant and presenter Gok Wan – grew up in his grandfather’s Chinese takeaway (Leicester’s first in the Sixties) and his dad’s Cantonese restaurant in the Seventies. “It was our playground. Unlike the children on our estate, who were going out to play, we were at the restaurant, hiding under tables and making dens – that was our playground,” says the chef.

In the Seventies and Eighties, even in small villages, there was a Chinese takeaway at the end of the street, says Wan. “And that’s where most people had their first experience of Chinese food.”

So how can we easily create this muchloved cuisine at home?

“We talk about MSG [monosodium glutamate] in Chinese cookery, and none of my cookbooks actually incorporate MSG at all, for the reason being, is that you get that umami kick from soy sauce, you get it from fish sauce, you get it from oyster sauce. So a lot of the ingredients already have this umami in there. If you learn to season your food correctly, you don’t need MSG.

“In Cantonese food, especially, we always season the dishes at the very, very end with a little bit of sesame oil. And that’s where you’re going to get those authentic Chinese flavours when it comes down to cooking the food.”

Prep everything first

The basic flavourings

For anyone starting out in Chinese cookery, there are only a handful of ingredients you need, Wan says: a good light soy sauce, a dark soy sauce (used for a little bit of sweetness”), oyster sauce (“a very, very small amount”) and sesame oil.

“Soy sauce is seasoning, it adds a saltiness to the dish but it’s also got that umami,” says the chef, whose latest cookbook is Chinese Made Easy.

“I always say to everybody, before you start cooking, make sure that everything’s chopped and prepared, and you’ve got your sauces out already. Because we’re cooking in such a hot wok, you don’t really have the time to disappear, go and find that bottle of soy sauce, and then get back before it starts to burn. So just make sure you’ve got everything ready.”

Keep it moving

“Get yourself a wok, and it hasn’t got to be one of these £200 woks. You can go and get a £20 non-stick wok,” says Wan.

“A traditional wok has got a round bottom, purely because of the way that it used to sit on the stove. In UK, our woks have flat

ABOVE
Kwoklyn Wan: This is how to make easy Chinese food at home
| Sam Folan/PA

bottoms so they sit on top of a gas cooker or electric induction. It’s got high sides, so once that food goes into the wok and the oil is hot, it has to move.

“When you cook your Chinese food, everything is normally done on high heat. So make sure that when you prep the veggies, cut them nice and small, and same with the meat. So everything cooks really, really quickly.

“Make sure that that oil is as hot as you dare take it, so everything actually stir fries. You actually want the food to ever so slightly burn a little bit.

“You want to let it sit long enough to get a little bit caramelisation. But when it starts to get that colour, you have to keep moving it.

“That method is called ‘wok hei’ or ‘the breath of the wok’ and it adds the smokiness to the food.”

Stay away from packet sauces

“They’re very westernised,” says Wan. “And obviously shelf-safe, they tend to have preservatives in there, so will affect the flavours ever so slightly. And chances are, when they were made, they probably weren’t made with authentic Chinese ingredients.

“A packet of black bean sauce – there’s nothing like making your own black bean sauce. If you can get to a Chinese supermarket and get yourself some fermented black beans, it makes all the difference. All you need then is a little bit of stock, a little bit of salt and sugar, a little bit soy sauce, and you’ve got a fantastic black bean sauce that isn’t from a packet.”

“If you really want to achieve authentic Chinese flavours, you have to use Chinese

ingredients. Depending on where you live, if you live in a major city, the big supermarkets will have a world aisle where you can normally get Chinese soy sauce, Chinese oyster sources, the sesame oils.

Try the velveting technique

“Velveting is a technique that we use to marinate the meat. When you go to a Chinese restaurant or takeaway and you eat a piece of meat, it’s always juicy, because it’s been velveted.

“If we got a chicken breast and just fried it off, it’d be cooked, but it wouldn’t have those flavours, it wouldn’t be juicy, whereas, because we velveted it, it’s smoother and velvety when you eat it, and makes it really tender. It breaks down those muscle fibres and the proteins. So when you actually cook the meat, it stays really juicy. It melts in the mouth.

“Always put on a pair of disposable plastic gloves and really massage the meat. The more that you handle that meat at this stage, the more tender [it will be].”

INGREDIENTS

450g-500g beef brisket, cut into 2.5cm cubes

2tbsp vegetable oil

1 large onion, sliced

3 garlic cloves, crushed

1 green pepper, sliced

1tbsp cornflour, mixed with 2tbsp water

For the marinade:

1⁄2tbsp fish sauce

1⁄2tbsp ground black pepper, plus extra for dressing the dish

3tbsp oyster sauce

For the sauce:

350ml beef stock

1tbsp light soy sauce

1⁄2tbsp dark soy sauce

2tbsp Chinese rice wine (Shaoxing wine)

1tbsp brown sugar

INGREDIENTS

24 wonton skins

Vegetable oil

Dipping sauce of your choice

300g crab sticks, finely chopped

75g onion, finely diced

75g carrot, peeled and finely diced

75g spring onions, finely diced

Pinch of salt

180-200g cream cheese

Braised black pepper beef

SERVES 2; PREPARATION TIME: 5 MINUTES, PLUS 20 MINUTES MARINATING; COOKING TIME: 1 1⁄2-2 HOURS

“Exquisitely succulent beef brisket, marinated and simmered in a robust sauce, pairs harmoniously with vegetables in this truly delightful dish,” says Kwoklyn Wan. “Enjoy with steamed rice.”

1. Begin by marinating the beef; add all the marinade ingredients to a bowl and spend one minute massaging them into the beef. This process will help break down some of the muscle fibres, making the beef even more tender. Leave to marinate for 20 minutes.

2. Place a heavy saucepan over a medium-high heat, add the oil and then the marinated beef. Once browned on all sides, remove the beef and set to one side.

3. In the same pan, add the onion and cook until browned, then add the garlic along with the green pepper and cook for a further one minute or until fragrant. Now add the sauce ingredients, deglaze the bottom of the pan and return the browned beef to the pan.

4. Once the sauce begins to come up to the boil, reduce the heat to very low, cover and cook for one and a half hours, or until the beef is super tender. (If your sauce begins to evaporate during this time, add more beef stock.)

5. To finish, give the cornflour mixture a stir and slowly pour it into the sauce, stirring at the same time. Once the sauce thickens, switch off the heat. Serve on top of freshly steamed rice with a final sprinkle of freshly ground black pepper.

Crispy cheesy crab wontons

SERVES 4; PREPARATION TIME, 15 MINUTES; COOKING TIME, 4 MINUTES

1. Place all the filling ingredients in a large bowl and mix very well.

2. Separate the wonton skins, then take one skin and place roughly half a tablespoon of filling in the middle. Pinch in the four sides so they meet in the middle, creating a star-like shape.

3. Repeat with the remaining wonton skins and filling. In a wok or deep saucepan, heat seven and a half to 10 centimetres of oil to around 180C, then add the wontons in batches and fry until golden brown and cooked all the way through. This will take around four minutes per batch.

4. Remove the cooked wontons and allow to drain and cool slightly before serving. Serve with your favourite dipping sauce and enjoy.

Red chilli paste glass noodles

SERVES 2; PREPARATION TIME, 10 MINUTES; COOKING TIME, 5 MINUTES

INGREDIENTS

100g glass noodles

150g beansprouts

60g carrots, peeled and cut into thin matchsticks

80g cucumber, cut into thin matchsticks

3tbsp gochujang

1tbsp gochugaru

2tbsp rice vinegar

1tbsp sugar

2tbsp water

2tbsp fish sauce

2 garlic cloves, minced

1tbsp sesame oil

1tbsp toasted sesame seeds

“These noodles take inspiration from Korean flavours, being bathed in a spicy, tangy sauce featuring gochujang paste and Korean chilli powder, then tossed with crisp beansprouts, carrots and cucumber”, says Kwoklyn Wan.

1. Place the glass noodles in a bowl and cover with boiling water. After two minutes, drain and set the noodles to one side.

2. Place the beansprouts, carrots and cucumber into another bowl and pour over boiling water. Steep for two minutes, then drain.

3. Mix all the sauce ingredients together, except the sesame seeds, and stir thoroughly ensuring the sugar is dissolved. Now add the noodles and drained vegetables. Mix well, ensuring all the ingredients are covered in the sauce.

4. Transfer to serving bowls and sprinkle with the sesame seeds to serve.

Southampton local Eva Phillips cast in the multi awardwinning musical Hamilton

at Mayflower Theatre, Southampton from 18 March until 26 April 2025

Eva Phllips grew up in Swanmore before moving to London to train at The Urdang Academy, where she graduated with a First Class Degree in Professional Dance & Musical Theatre. Eva’s theatre credits include Dirty Dancing on a UK and Ireland Tour, and at the Folies Bergère, Paris.

Her other theatre credits include UK and International Tours of Thriller Live, and she has performed as a dancer including for Little Mix at The Brit Awards.

She now returns to Southampton with the first ever UK and Ireland tour of the multi award-winning musical Hamilton, playing at Mayflower Theatre from Tuesday 18 March until Saturday 26 April 2025.

We caught up with Eva to find out more about her role in the hit musical.

Where did you go to school/what area did you grow up in and what were some of your local haunts growing up?

I grew up and went to school in Swanmore and was very lucky to have the countryside on my doorstep. I used to walk across a cow field to get to school and my friends were mostly in walking distance. I used to love visiting Marwell Zoo and Manor Farm, and the days when my mum would pick me and my sister up from school and we’d drive straight to West Wittering and run into the sea.

Where did you train? And where are you based now?

I always had an idea that I’d perform, but I just danced for fun in school clubs and productions until I was around 15. Then I realised that if I wanted to dance professionally, I’d need to take it seriously, so I spent the ages of 15-18 filling every moment with dance.

I started training at Laban with the CAT scheme every Saturday, spent Sundays with STP Musicals in Bursledon, and weekday evenings at Emjay School of Dance in Southampton where I was so supported despite being a late starter with them. I did a BTEC in Dance at South Downs College. I then moved to London to study Dance & Musical theatre at the Urdang Academy, and I’ve been London based ever since.

Do you have plans to visit anywhere locally whilst the show is in Southampton?

I’m looking forward to spending time back home. The show keeps us pretty busy but I’m hoping to get out on the Hamble on my paddle board if the weather allows. I’ve not been home for such an extended period for a while, so I’m going to try and see as many friends as possible and treat my spare time as a holiday at home!

What does it mean to be performing at Mayflower Theatre? Will family and friends be coming to see the show whilst you are here?

It means so much to be performing so close to home, and in what I remember as being THE theatre growing up. Despite touring a couple of times I’ve not performed at Mayflower Theatre before, and even though my friends and family show me support wherever I’m on stage, they are very happy they don’t have to travel too far this time around!

Have you been to Mayflower Theatre before, to perform or as an audience member? What is your earliest memory of the theatre?

I have really fond memories of visiting Mayflower Theatre when I was younger. One of my earliest memories is watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang with my family. I think it was one of the first musicals I’d seen, and I had so much fun. I don’t know if it was the flying car, or the chocolate ice cream in the interval, but I was sold.

When were you cast in Hamilton? Can you tell us about the process and how you found out you had been cast?

I saw the show in the West End in 2018 and loved every second. Before the show even ended, I made a promise to myself that I’d be in it one day. The audition process consisted of six singing/dancing rounds, followed by a week-long bootcamp. After a long wait, I got the news in August of last year and was over the moon!

Tell us about your role in the show?

I play “W1”, a female presenting member of the ensemble. As the ensemble in Hamilton, we portray all sorts throughout the show – one moment we’re the

jury in the first American murder trial, the next we’re a physical expression of Aaron Burr’s darkest desires, we’re constantly evolving and hardly leave the stage. The choreography is incredibly detailed and every single movement has a meaning, and although it is definitely a physically demanding show, being able to tap into that intention rather than moving for movements’ sake is really creatively fulfilling. All the cast are so talented, it’s a really special production to be a part of.

Why should audiences come and see Hamilton at Mayflower Theatre?

The show speaks to people in many different ways, some come away inspired by the messages of perseverance and hope, some feel empowered by the story of revolution and new beginnings, and others simply enjoy letting the amazing storytelling take them along for the ride. We’re really proud of this production and if people are able to come along, we promise a great show.

The time is 1897. Mankind is on the cusp of vast technological change, scientific mastery and media innovation. Poised between traditional beliefs, the threat of the unknown and the shock of the new world, an altogether darker fear is emerging. As a new shadow looms large over England, a small group of young men and women, led by Professor Van Helsing, are plunged into an epic struggle for survival.

Stretching from London, through provincial England, to the mountainous wastes of Transylvania, Bram Stoker’s timeless gothic thriller embodies the struggle to break taboos, resist temptation and stop the unknown outside becoming the enemy within.

SWAN LAKE

11 - 15 MARCH

Matthew Bourne’s audacious, rule-breaking reinvention of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece caused a sensation when it premiered 30 years ago. It has now become the most successful dance theatre production of all time, creating new audiences and inspiring generations of young dancers. In celebration of that ongoing impact, Swan Lake will take flight once more in a major new revival for the next generation of dancers, and for audiences who will experience it for the very first time.

Thrilling, bold, witty and emotive, this genre-defining event is still best known for replacing the female corpsde-ballet with a menacing male ensemble, which shattered convention, turning tradition on its head.
