MEET KAYEMBA,

THE RARE OKAPI CALF BORN AT MARWELL ZOO

Marwell Wildlife is celebrating the birth of a rare okapi calf, marking a significant milestone for the conservation of this endangered species.

The calf’s mother Niari was herself born at Marwell five years ago to Daphne and Jabari. This marks an incredible thirdgeneration success, highlighting the zoo’s expertise in breeding and caring for okapi.

The species, often referred to as the ‘forest giraffe’ is native to the dense rainforests of the Democratic Republic of Congo and faces increasing threats from habitat loss, poaching and illegal mining, with fewer than 10,000 individuals estimated to remain in the wild.

MARWELL ZOO www.marwell.org.uk

Kayemba was born on 28 October following a 14-month gestation period. In the wild, okapi mothers leave their calves hidden in dense vegetation, returning only to nurse them. This instinctive behaviour helps protect the vulnerable newborns from predators.

The okapi house is now open, however guests hoping to catch a glimpse of the new arrival will need patience, as the calf remains in a ‘nesting’ phase.

PATRONS OF THE NATIONAL MOTOR MUSEUM PRESENTS YOUNG PIONEER AWARD

The National Motor Museum’s Beaulieu One Hundred club has bestowed the accolade of 2024 Young Pioneer Award to Zander Miller from Dorset.

Twenty-one-year-old Zander Miller from Verwood has organised several large car meets across the south, all boasting some of the finest vehicles on the road.

Zander has become an inspiring young car enthusiast and entrepreneur who has organised large scale supercar events. He established a ‘South Coast Super Car Club’ which originally arose from his interest in cars and photography.

The award comes from Beaulieu 100, a car club of motoring enthusiasts, collectors and specialists that supports the work of the National Motor Museum. Each year Beaulieu 100 present a Young Pioneer Award following a member vote. This year’s award was presented at the club’s annual dinner at the Royal Automobile Club in London.

LIGHTHOUSE MAKES TOURISM AWARDS FINAL MAKING AN ‘INCREDIBLE’ TRIPLE WIN POSSIBLE

Lighthouse Poole could be celebrating an ‘incredible’ triple win after being named as a finalist in Business Events Venue of the Year category at the Dorset Tourism Awards.

As a finalist it is guaranteed Gold, Silver or Bronze status, but having won Gold for two years running, hopes are high it can retain the title when at the Dorset Tourism Awards Night on Thursday 6 February at the Marsham Court Hotel in Bournemouth.

“We’re taking nothing for granted, but retaining our title would be an incredible achievement,” says Lucy Funnell, Corporate Development Executive at Lighthouse. “Lighthouse works very hard to make sure everyone who comes here has a great experience, whether they come to see a show, attend a conference, take part in a course, or present a trade fair.”

Successful businesses in the Dorset Tourism Awards are considered for the South West England Tourism Excellence Awards in March, and possibly the national Visit England Awards later in the year.

A community art project has launched to support Weldmar Hospicecare with a vibrant trail of elephant sculptures across Dorset.

Excitement is building at Saffery’s Bournemouth office as staff welcomed an early visitor from next year’s “Stampede by the Sea” art trail.

Fundraising Lead, Fiona Hansford and fundraiser, Eden Fraser from Weldmar Hospicecare brought along a baby elephant statue for a photo opportunity, offering a sneak peek of the colourful herd set to take over Bridport, West Bay, and Lyme Regis from 28th March to 27th May 2025.

The event, organised in partnership with local businesses like Saffery, aims to raise vital funds for Weldmar Hospicecare, which provides compassionate end-of-life care for local adults with life-limiting illnesses and support for their families. At the end of the

project, each of the thirty artist-designed elephants on the trail will be auctioned at the Corn Exchange in Dorchester to raise funds for Weldmar Hospicecare.

Casidhe Baleri, Saffery Partner said, “Saffery is honoured to be part of such a meaningful project. “Stampede by the Sea is about more than art; it’s about bringing the community together to support Weldmar’s invaluable work. We’re thrilled to welcome this little elephant as an ambassador for the event, and we look forward to seeing the full herd take shape next year.”

The art trail will also feature baby elephant sculptures permanently placed in local schools and learning centres, creating lasting connections between the community and Weldmar Hospice Care’s mission.

ROCKREEF WRAPS UP ITS 10 TH BIRTHDAY

MASCOT CHALLENGE WITH A CELEBRATION!

RockReef on Bournemouth Pier is delighted to announce the conclusion of its 10th Birthday Mascot Challenge, a community led initiative that brought together local children, partners, and creative talents to celebrate a decade of fun and adventure on the Pier.

The challenge invited children across Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole to design a mascot that captured RockReef’s spirit of exploration, courage, and excitement. Over 100 creative and colourful entries were submitted, showcasing the incredible imagination and talent of local young artists.

After careful deliberation by our judging panel, 12-year-old Izabela Kaczynska, was named the winner. Her thoughtful and vibrant mascot design perfectly embodied RockReef’s ethos and was praised for its adventurous spirit and comforting qualities for nervous climbers.

Izabela said “I’m so grateful to my art teacher, Miss Witherington from St. Peter’s School, for encouraging me to enter the RockReef Mascot Challenge. I wanted my mascot to reflect everything that makes RockReef special, its tunnels, caves, and the safety ropes that give everyone the confidence to climb. I also chose bright and inviting colours,

ROCKREEF www.rockreef.co.uk

inspired by the energy of RockReef. On a personal level, I remember feeling nervous about climbing when I first visited RockReef, and I wanted my mascot to represent the support and encouragement that can help others overcome their fears. “To prepare the design for its official debut, Bennett Roberts, a BA (Hons) Graphic Design student from Arts University Bournemouth (AUB), worked to finesse the mascot’s final look. Bennett’s expertise helped bring the design to life while staying true to Izabela’s vision.

“We’re incredibly proud of how this challenge brought our community together,” said James Balcazar, Marketing Manager for Adventure Attractions. “From the talented children who entered to our partners at AUB, the Daily Echo, and BCP Council, it’s been a true team effort.”

The winning mascot, along with the top ten designs, will be featured in an exhibition at RockReef, curated by AUB, celebrating the creativity and talent of our local community.

Visit the exhibition at RockReef on Bournemouth Pier and join them in marking this milestone in a way that honours the community spirit that makes RockReef so special. For more information, visit rockreef.co.uk. RockReef is operated by Adventure Attractions.

AUB STUDENTS CHOSEN BY LOCAL BUSINESSES TO CREATE FINTASTIC DESIGNS

Three third-year students from the BA Illustration course at Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) have had their designs selected by local businesses to appear on a mermaid tail sculpture as part of The Great Tail Trail next spring.

Lily Skip, I’Eisha Haywood and Beck O’Hara impressed the selection panel comprising representatives from LV=, AFC Bournemouth, BH Live and trail organiser, Julia’s House children’s hospice. Their original designs will now feature on three of the giant sculptures sponsored by these businesses in key locations across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

Vincent Larkin, AUB’s Course Leader for BA Illustration, said, “Receiving and responding to a live brief from these local businesses and having their designs chosen has given Lily, I’Eisha and Beck a wonderful opportunity to put their work in an audience-facing context as part of a major public art event. In the process, they are also learning how to work with a client and about how community art projects are commissioned and run. It’s invaluable experience for them. They’ve all done really well and I’m incredibly impressed with their work.”

The Great Tail Trail opens to the public for 8 weeks from 5 April 2025.

TRETHOWANS OPENS APPLICATIONS FOR THEIR 2026 AND 2027 GRADUATE TRAINEE PROGRAMME

Trethowans, a leading law firm with offices across the central south of England has opened its applications for trainee solicitors.

Head of People & Culture Kate Ellis said, “Every year, we look for bright, talented individuals to join our award-winning firm as trainee solicitors. On average, we recruit three to five trainees per year, and we warmly invite applications from those who have studied law, as well as those who have a non-law background.

“Trainee solicitors at Trethowans get the best of both worlds: a firm with big clients and major ambitions, but also a tight-knit, supportive team who value each new staff member from day one.

What are they looking for? “We are not just looking for academic achievement when we recruit trainees. Identifying candidates who have potential, who have the characteristics and drive we are looking for, and who are able to demonstrate the qualities we seek is of equal importance to us. Our culture is something we are very proud of, and so we are looking for people who share similar values and aspirations as us. Our aim is to recruit trainees who, upon qualification, wish to continue their career with Trethowans.

Training contracts at Trethowans: “Our twoyear training programme is usually divided

TRETHOWANS www.trethowans.com

into four six-month ‘seats’ with different teams. These will ideally take place in at least two of our five offices in Bournemouth, Poole, Salisbury, Southampton and Winchester. The seats available will depend on our growth objectives and business requirements, but we will always talk to our trainees and try to accommodate their preferences wherever possible. Throughout the programme, trainees will work closely with their allocated supervisor to make sure they are getting the most from their training.

“We aim to give every trainee a stimulating and challenging experience with plenty of direct client contact. From day one, trainees will play an active and important role in their respective team. We will expect hard work, enthusiasm and commitment –and, in return, we will offer lots of support and encouragement.

“Trainees also receive a comprehensive benefits package, including 25 days of holiday, a bonus scheme, pension, income protection, and many other benefits.”

This year they are recruiting two intakes of trainees, to start in September 2026 and September 2027. Applications for their 2026 and 2027 trainee intakes are now open. To apply visit www.trethowans. com/trainee-solicitors and submit your application by 28 February 2025.

MARWELL WILDLIFE SECURES FUNDING FOR A NEW UK NATIVE SPECIES ZONE

Marwell Wildlife is delighted to announce that it has secured funding for a new Native Species Zone at Marwell Zoo, set to open in March 2025.

The project, which has been awarded a generous grant of £49,954 from the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund, administered by Winchester City Council, will showcase UK wildlife while addressing urgent conservation needs. Phase one of the project focuses on white-clawed crayfish and sand lizards, two UK species that face threats to their survival.

White-clawed crayfish, once a keystone species in Hampshire’s chalk streams, have suffered a dramatic decline in the past 40 years due to habitat loss, and competition and predation from invasive crayfish species, and most significantly the disease ‘crayfish plague’ that they carry.

The new Conservation Breeding Centre will provide a haven for crayfish and enable Marwell, in collaboration with Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, to support population recovery across the region.

As a conservation and education charity, Marwell aims to be at the forefront of what a modern zoo should be for now and the future, backed by a record of conservation science and tangible outputs that really make a difference to nature’s recovery.

Top kitchen trends to watch out for in 2025 5

From neutrals to Japandi style, here’s what’s set to be in fashion.

The kitchen is the hardest working space in the home and central to everything close to our heart… but what if it could be so much more, and marry function with trendsetting flair. Especially if you’re looking to upgrade your kitchen in the new year, remodel the layout, or considering a fresh lick of paint to inspire supper parties and funk up your tablescape.

“Whether you want your kitchen to be modern and bold or a welcoming, intimate space, there’s a style that will match everyone’s taste and preferences,” says Harriet Goodacre, style consultant and brand communications manager at Topps Tiles.

Here’s what’s hot as we draw on the latest trends for 2025…

Japandi inspired

“What do Scandinavia and Japan have in common?

Despite having miles [and miles] between them, both regions master the art of simplicity,” opines Goodacre.

RIGHT

“Japan is renowned for its functionality whilst Scandinavia is synonymous with minimalism. Pair them together and you create a contemporary, clutter-free style that’s rooted in nature.”

She says this will make an impact in 2025 as we embrace creating spaces which are contemporary and uncomplicated in appearance.

“Japandi-inspired kitchens boast clean lines, natural materials and colours to create a warm and grounded kitchen space,” notes Goodacre.

“Wood is a prominent feature in this design, with dark walnut shades and lighter oak featuring on cabinets. Pair with ceramic, porcelain and stone, to create a calm yet minimalist look that takes inspiration from nature.”

The idea is to create a space of tranquillity, so the less clutter the better. “Kitchens that have smart storage solutions and push-door cabinets or handless designs will allow you to keep to the simplicity of Japandi without missing out on the functionality a good kitchen needs.”

Tiles are also key for this trend. “Something that’s simple and doesn’t compete for attention with the rest of the kitchen, yet still looks stylish and special.

“Consider a marble or marble-effect tile with subtle veining to add a touch of luxury, and be sure to use the same tile on both the walls and floors for a unified look,” suggests Goodacre.

Pair this look with gold taps or a standout light, for example, and to bring an extra touch of luxe to your Japandi-inspired kitchen, she adds.

Moody and expressive

If minimalism isn’t your style but being bold and expressive is, then having a kitchen that uses deep, moody colours to stand out may be your cup of tea, suggests Goodacre.

“Our kitchens are often the space we use to host and impress our guests, so it’s natural that some people will want more than just their cooking skills to create drama,” highlights Goodacre.

“With that in mind, we expect to see more expressive kitchens that tap into the current colour-drenching trend.

ABOVE

Black kitchen to illustrate moody and expressive trend | Alamy/PA

This is all about using deep, strong colours, such as forest green and smoky charcoal or inky blacks, to create a kitchen that’s slick and dramatic,” she explains.

If you’re colour-drenching your walls, tiles and cabinetry in a bold, statement colour, picking a contrasting countertop or tiled backsplash in a lighter colour creates an instant focal point, says Goodacre.

“Breaking up the room while being visually striking.”

“But don’t be afraid to play with more than just colour, as adding texture also adds to the boldness of expressive kitchens,” she continues. “Choosing tiles with a gloss finish to go with matt cabinets and walls creates contrast that catches the eye.”

New neutrals and warm tones

“With 2024 being the year we connected more with our wellbeing, it makes sense calming tones which bring nature inside has bled into interior design,” notes Goodacre. “Neutral and warm tones are versatile, timeless and allow homeowners to tap into their desire for creating a calm, warming space.”

You can pick from the usual rich creams, shell shades and caramels which will all stand the test of time, says Goodacre, and continue to be popular in kitchen spaces. “Or play with a more modern take on neutrals, which we’re hailing as the ‘new neutrals’.

This includes shades such as pale blue, very soft lilacs and pinks, as well as warmer, earthy, terracotta hues, she explains.

“Using Scandi wood-style panelling on cabinets or earthy pink tiles will allow you to create a very modern, but welcoming feeling kitchen which draws inspiration from natural materials and colours.”

Smart tech and gadgets

Looeeze Grossman, founder and CEO of The Used Kitchen Company says: “Homeowners are increasingly embracing advanced technology in their homes and this trend looks to continue into 2025 and beyond.”

“From smart speakers connected to intelligent lighting and small appliances, to touch sensor bins and full-on smart appliances with connected apps, kitchens will become even more integrated with smart technology.”

These advancements not only make your kitchen run more effectively, says Grossman, but also promote energy efficiency, helping to reduce long-term utility costs.

In addition to convenience and efficiency, smart tech enhances safety in the kitchen. “Features such as remote-controlled hobs and fridges which alert you when burners are left on, and doors left open, are particularly beneficial for busy households with small children,” highlights Grossman.

Colourful cabinets and walls

“Painted kitchens have had another surge throughout 2024, a trend that shows no signs of fading as we move into the new year,” notes Grossman.

“From bold colours such as pink and green to timeless neutrals, homeowners are opting for kitchens with a mix of colour choices which reflect their own style and add a bit of personality to a kitchen.”

Earthy greens and warm blues combined with neutral shades of cream and white have definitely been on trend this year, says Grossman, as people opt for a more warm and cosy environment. “Paired with natural materials such as stone countertops and wood accents, painted kitchens create a harmonious and balanced aesthetic.”

Grossman continues. “A fresh coat of paint can transform a kitchen, breathing new life into a tired space without a complete overhaul.

“Whether you choose to repaint cabinets, walls, or even smaller details like trim and doors, the right colour combo can redefine the look of your kitchen.”

Prue Leith’s easy leftover Christmas cake ice cream recipe

Here’s an effective way to use up all that fruit cake.

Great British Bake Off judge and chef Prue Leith says: “Few children like Christmas pudding, but I’ve never met one who didn’t like ice cream. About 40 years ago, I started using the leftover Christmas cake or lump of Christmas pudding in a Christmas dessert made mostly of vanilla ice cream.

“Now everyone expects this version of Christmas ‘pud’. Some years the ice cream is flavoured with leftovers, sometimes I just buy a jar of mincemeat and use that. Sometimes it’s crumbled mince pies. But the essential thing is to get enough of that Christmas flavour – so taste as you mix, and add a bit of powdered cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and ginger, if you need to.”

Life’s Too Short To Stuff A Mushroom by Prue Leith is published in hardback by Carnival. Photography Ant Duncan. Available now.

Christmas cake ice cream SERVES

INGREDIENTS

1L/35fl oz shop-bought softscoop vanilla ice cream

About 350g/12oz leftover Christmas cake, pudding or mince pies, roughly crumbled

3tbsp brandy

1. In a large, chilled mixing bowl, combine the softened ice cream with the crumbled leftovers and the brandy. Take care not to over-mix – you want to see nice big pieces of Christmas pudding, or whatever, throughout.

2. Line a large plastic pudding bowl or a large loaf tin with cling film, making sure to leave plenty of overhang so that you can wrap the contents fully. Transfer the mixture into the container, then cover the top and freeze the ‘pudding’ for at least six hours.

3. When it’s time to serve, unwrap the ice-cream pudding or loaf and either turn it out to serve in slices or scoop it from the tin.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS: Before you start, chill the cake or pud that you want to incorporate, and chill the big bowl you are going to mix it in and the small container you are going to freeze it in. Line the smaller bowl or tin with cling film to help you un-mould the ice cream later.

Use soft-scoop ice cream, so you can mix without having to melt the ice cream first. It’s better to have patches of plain ice cream than to beat all the air out of the mixture and end up with a rock-hard frozen dessert.

You want the result to be two-thirds plain vanilla ice cream and one third added pudding/cake/mince pies.

2025 and the lettings market: Navigating a year of transformation

The lettings market is bracing for a transformative year as 2025 looms on the horizon, bringing with it significant changes that could reshape the landscape for landlords and tenants alike. Amid rising rents over the past two years and the anticipated implementation of the Renters Rights Bill, stakeholders are facing critical decisions. Will landlords weather the storm or exit the market? How will tenants adapt to new tenancy norms?

We talk to Sharon Canning, Owner & Director of Move On Sales & Lettings, to explore the challenges, opportunities, and her expert advice for navigating a year of regulatory shifts and evolving dynamics in the rental sector.

What does 2025 look like in the lettings market to you?

We have a year of change coming in. The market has seen an increase in rents being charged over the last 18-24 months, but I feel that this may have reached its peak at the moment. Depending on how many landlords look to exit the market due to their concerns on the Renters Rights bill, this will leave less properties in the rental market and when there is less stock, prices will rise. But I do believe, landlords should wait it out over the course of this government, if they were always going to be holding their rental property for the long term. But for those who have retirement plans, or it was only a short-term plan, that the capital gain increase may sway their decision.

What impact will the Renters Rights Bill have on landlords?

2025 is a significant year for landlords as we look to the Renters Rights Bill, which will be coming in (not ‘if’). The Government is very keen to bring this into force quickly and are looking to go to Royal Assent in the New Year and come into force anywhere between Easter and the latest October 2025. But be in no doubt, it is coming in.

Most landlords will be aware of its existence and there have been many reports on what may come in or not come in, but it is looking highly likely that the following will be.

1. Section 21’s to be banned.

2. New Grounds under Section 8 to accommodate the ban of Section 21

3. No fixed term Tenancy Agreements

4. Higher Civil Penalties

5. New terms for rent arrears- going from 2 months to 3 months

And others….

How do you feel about ‘No Fixed Term Tenancies’?

Great Question! I am against it for a few of reasons. I believe that the majority of tenants like to feel secure in their home and giving them a fixed term tenancy gives them peace of mind that they cannot be asked to leave (unless they are in breach of their tenancy agreement). Giving security to a tenant allows them to make roots, this could be planting flowers in the garden to see them bloom, join and become part of the local community etc. The landlord likes fixed term tenancies, as this gives them security that their mortgage is being paid for that fixed period too.

Banning the Section 21 will involve adding new grounds to the Section 8 notice. This will still allow a landlord to request the property back if they wish to sell the property, move into the property or move a family member in. At the moment the bill is looking at the landlord not being able to re-rent the property after a tenant vacates under this Section notice for 12

months (just in case the landlord’s situation changes after the tenant vacates)

What will attract civil penalties?

The magic number for civil penalties seems to £7,000 and in some cases if the reason for the first fine is not resolved this will increase to £40,000! Civil Penalties go to the local council in full!

Any landlord offering fixed term tenancies to tenants attracts a £7,000 penalty. Any landlord discriminating against a tenant will impose up to £7,000 penalty. Any landlord not having an active entry on the PRS database will attract up to a £7,000 penalty. Not being part of a redress scheme will £7,000 fine, if you are penalised and fail to join within 28 days this could be up to a further £40,000!! Decent Homes Standard will carry a £7,000 penalty. These are just a selection.

Any advice to landlords for 2025?

These will seem terrifying, but there are a lot of good landlords out there who

420 Poole Rd, Branksome, Poole BH12 1DF

WEBSITE

www.moveonrentals.com

understand the tenancy law, but for those who have been self-managing, may find now is the time to look at a local reputable Agency and hand over the reigns so to speak to ensure the remain compliant. Good agents will always hold the landlords’ hand and see them through.

It is also really important to ensure your paperwork is 100% together before this Bill comes in, as any discrepancies after, could find a landlord with a very long-term tenant in situ! I welcome any landlord to contact me if they have any concerns.

At Move On Sales & Lettings, Sharon Canning and her team are dedicated to helping landlords navigate the complexities of the evolving rental landscape. Whether you need advice on staying compliant with the new regulations, assistance with tenancy management, or just peace of mind in uncertain times, Move On Sales & Lettings is here to support you. As we approach the end of the year, it signifies a perfect time to wrap up warm and get some fresh sea air.

Spending time near the coast has an abundance of well-documented health benefits, including making people feel happier and more relaxed – which is just what we need as we enter the colder months.

So, get your walking boots out from the bottom of the cupboard as the following picturesque coastal walks are sure to inspire you to get outdoors…

The Durdle Door to White Nothe Walk, Dorset, England

This circular coastal route offers breathtaking views of one of the UK’s most photographed coastal landmarks, Durdle Door in Dorset – an iconic natural limestone arch on the Jurassic Coast near Lulworth.

The moderate challenging walk takes around three hours and commences at the Durdle Door Car Park, and takes ramblers on a scenic journey of chalk stacks, arches and Instagrammable coastal landscapes.

Once you reach the White Nothe chalk headland, the route circles back to the car park via Old Daggers Gate Road.

Stack Rocks to St Govan’s, Pembrokeshire, Wales

This gorgeous coastal walk begins at the Stacks Rocks Car Park, where waves gently lap against two impressive detached limestone pillars. Grass paths guide visitors around the coast, down a flight of steps to a chapel dedicated to St Govan – an Irish abbot of the 6th Century – and the journey concludes at St Govan’s Head.

Keen hikers can take the challenging adventure 6.3-mile route, and those looking for a relaxing afternoon stroll can opt for the shorter 3.1-mile walk.

Cruden Bay to Bullers of Buchan Walk, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

If you are craving a sense of adventure and adore dramatic landscapes, this 8.7km coastal walk is for you. It passes through the Slains Castle ruins, which is believed to have inspired the Gothic setting of Dracula.

After following an easy-to-follow path for approximately two hours, you will reach a spectacular end destination – The Bullers of Buchan, a 30-metre-deep collapsed sea cave. Some parts of the trail can get muddy, so take extra care after a spate of wet weather.

The Kilkee Cliff Walk, County Clare, Ireland

A popular trail for birding, hiking, and running, the 5.6km Kilkee Cliff Walk takes an average of one hour 26 minutes to complete.

Enjoy uninterrupted coastal views, rugged cliffs and the sound of crashing waves as you make your way along this stunning seaside route.

This trail commences and ends at the Diamond Rocks Car Park, where there is a cafe to start and conclude the walk with some refreshments.

There are several fantastic viewpoints dotted across the route, and if you are keen to extend your adventure, you can carry on walking to Bunlickie.

Dunseverick Castle to the Giant’s Causeway, County Antrim, Northern Ireland

Nearly nine kilometres of road adventures, heritage sites and unspoilt landscapes, this is Irish walk is definitely one to add to the bucket list.

It begins at Dunseverick Castle, famous for being the place where St Patrick baptised Olcán, a local man who later became the first Bishop of Ireland. Today, only the gate lodge survives after the castle was destroyed in the 17th century by the Cromwellians.

After a three hour walk, dedicated ramblers are treated to one of Northern Ireland’s famous World Heritage Sites, The Giant’s Causeway.

This unique historical treasure is made up of some 40,000 black basalt interlocking columns sticking out of the sea, and has inspired legends of giants striding over the sea, to Scotland.

How does exercise improve memory?

Sufficient sleep and regular exercise lead to sharper cognitive function and improved memory retention, say the experts.

New research from the University College London found that 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity and sleeping for at least six hours at night could contribute to improved cognitive performance the following day. For the study, 76 adults aged 50-83 years old wore accelerometers for eight days to monitor their physical activity and sleep. The participants also took daily cognitive tests of attention, memory, psychomotor speed, executive function and processing speed.

Writing in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, the researchers reported: “We found two key results. First, participating in more MVPA (moderate to vigorous physical activity) on the previous day was associated with better episodic and working memory performance, while more sedentary behaviour on the previous day was detrimental for working memory.

“Second…longer sleep duration overall on the previous night was associated with better performance for episodic memory and psychomotor speed, while more SWS (slow-wave sleep) was associated with better episodic memory and more REM (rapid eye movement) sleep was associated with better attention scores. Taken together, the results suggest independent contributions of MVPA and sleep characteristics to next-day cognitive performance.”

We have spoken to some experts who have explained the reasons why regular exercise in conjunction with sufficient sleep helps boost our memory.

What happens in the brain during physical activity that helps improve memory?

“Exercise indirectly improves memory by improving mood and sleep, and by reducing stress and anxiety which impair memory,” says Rachael Mackenzie, neurological physio and director at Workathlete.

“A number of mechanisms directly influence memory by increasing blood flow (and therefore nutrient/ oxygen availability) and by promoting the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus, the region of the brain that is primarily responsible for memory.”

BDNF plays an important role in growth.

“Exercise stimulates the release of BDNF, a protein that supports the growth and survival of neurons and enhances synaptic plasticity,” explains Steve Allder, consultant neurologist at Re:Cognition Health. “This process strengthens connections between neurons, which is critical for learning and memory formation.”

Does exercising regularly enhance the impact of this?

“Yes, regular exercise amplifies these positive effects on the brain,” says Allder. “Consistency in physical activity maintains elevated levels of BDNF and promotes long-term improvements in neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity.

“Over time, these processes help to build a more resilient and efficient brain, enhancing memory and cognitive function.”

Regular exercise can also help reduce some of the risk factors associated with a sedentary lifestyle. “Exercise has the double effect of reducing the inflammatory and cardio metabolic risk factors associated with a sedentary lifestyle, which result in poorer blood flow to the brain and neuronal atrophy alongside the neurotrophic effect of exercise,” notes Mackenzie.

“In fact, there is some evidence to suggest that combating sedentary behaviour is one of the most important factors in reducing cognitive decline. People who exercise regularly are less likely to develop dementia and if memory problems start to occur, increasing exercise can improve their presentation.”

ABOVE & LEFT

Does sleep complement these benefits?

“During sleep, the brain consolidates memories, transferring information from short-term to long-term storage,” explains Allder. “Exercise promotes better quality sleep – it reduces stress, regulating the sleepwake cycle and enhances deep sleep stages, which are crucial for memory consolidation.

“Together, exercise and sufficient sleep form a powerful duo: exercise enhances the brain’s ability to encode and retrieve information, while sleep ensures this information is efficiently consolidated and stored. This synergy leads to sharper cognitive function and improved memory retention.”

Here are four 30-minute exercises you can try at home to sharpen your memory…

1. Brisk walking circuit

“Alternate between three minutes of steady walking and two minutes of fast walking,” recommends Michael Betts, personal trainer and director of TRAINFITNESS.

“Change routes and terrain to engage your spatial memory. Add arm movements to increase intensity.”

2. Dance cardio

“Combine basic aerobic moves with dance steps,” suggests Betts. “Create simple sequences to follow and gradually add complexity as you get better.

“This combines cardio with coordination and memory practice. Dance games on games consoles can be excellent for this.”

3. Bodyweight circuit training

“Rotate through exercises like squats, push-ups, lunges and star jumps,” instructs Betts. “Do each exercise for 45 seconds with 15 seconds rest.

“Create different sequences to challenge your memory while keeping it intense.”

4. Mixed-mode cardio

“Combine five-minute blocks of different activities like marching, step-ups, boxing moves and knee lifts,” says Betts. “This keeps you engaged while giving you consistent cardio benefits.”

Now That’s What I Call A Musical

This January, audiences at the Mayflower Theatre are in for a nostalgic treat as Craig Revel Horwood, the acclaimed director and choreographer, brings NOW That’s What I Call A Musical to life. Running from 14–18 January, this brand-new production promises a dazzling blend of iconic 80s hits, heartfelt storytelling, and breathtaking choreography.

What sort of night are audiences in for when they come to see NOW That’s What I Call A Musical?

They can expect some fantastic tunes, a blast from the past, some amazing dancing, some great singing and a great story. It’s a little bit like Stephen Sondheim’s Follies in the fact that it’s set at a reunion and there are flashbacks. The main characters flash back to how they were as teenagers, the music they listened to back in the 80s and the things that led them to live their lives the way they have. It explores all of that and we also have a twist towards the end where we go ahead in time too. It goes through various time zones [laughs] so it’s a little bit like Back to the Future.

How does it tie in with the NOW brand?

The flashbacks are all about the time when the NOW albums were so famous and so beloved, and the story is about two girls exploring how they’ve lived their lives through music. So those albums and that music were a big part of the leading characters’ teenage years.

The show is written by Pippa Evans. How is it collaborating with her?

She’s fun and she’s funny. She’s got a really great sense of humour and she’s a fantastic writer, not to mention a fantastic comic writer. She’s come up with some great twists in the tale and she’s quite sensitive as a writer towards young teenage girls and their relationship with their parents whilst they’re growing up.

It’s a brand new musical. That must be an exciting thing to be a part of?

It’s really exciting because with a brand new musical there’s nothing to really base it on, so when you get into the rehearsal room you can be really creative and you have an open mind. That’s what I love about doing new work. With this it’s about weaving all the great songs through the story. That’s one of the challenges, as well as making sure the story is strong. Comedy is a huge element in the show as well as a lot of heartfelt moments, and we’re using songs from the 80s to help push the story forward. There are so many creative opportunities with a new show and when I’m directing I really let everyone

have a bit of a say. We all create the show together in the room and I think that’s really important. The actors can bring their creativity and their thoughts and ideas for the characters, then it’s about structuring it.

How are the guest artists like Sinitta, Sonia, Carol Decker and Jay Osmond weaved into the story?

[Laughs] It’s sort of a moment of madness really, where the musical goes into a little bit of fantasy. The singers the girls idolised and were totally in love with come to life to offer them wisdom and advice. It’s a bit like Beauty School Dropout from Grease only the advice they give is much kinder!

Why do you think pop music is so important to everyone’s lives?

The 80s was a great time for pop and music in general helps people through lots of emotional journeys in their lives, especially with teenagers because their hormones are running riot. As an older person you look back to those moments that made you happy and music is a huge part of that. This show taps into that nostalgia but it will also appeal to younger audiences because a lot of the 80s tunes are coming back or they’ve been covered by other artists. There’s something in it for absolutely everyone and I think teenagers will associate with the two girls - how they’re living their lives, their hopes and their dreams, and their aspirations - as much as adults will. Those are themes that are universal.

NOW That’s What I Call Music is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Why do you think it’s such an iconic brand?

Again it’s because music is so important to people’s lives and also the NOW albums first came along at a time when people would make compilations for friends and lovers. They were like ready-made mixtapes, where you’d get so many amazing hits on one album, cassette tape or on CD whereas before you’d have to buy individual singles or albums. I think a lot of teenagers now will be shocked and surprised that we had tape decks back in the day! Before the NOW albums you’d wait for a song to come on the radio, then record it onto a cassette, and you’d never manage to get the full version of it.

What was the first single and the first album you ever bought?

The first single I ever bought was Monster Mash, bizarrely, when I was growing up in Australia. And I think the first album I totally fell in love with was Dare by the Human League. I loved all the songs on that album, the tone of it and the freedom of it. It was like a whole new experience because it was so modern.

Which pop pin-ups did you have on your wall during the 80s?

Coming after ABBA and going into the 80s it was Whitney Houston because I thought ‘How can someone sing like that and look like that?’ She was like a supermodel with this incredible voice. I loved Annie Lennox and the Eurythmics as well, plus Duran Duran.

What were your 80s fashion choices?

I used to have headbands and I had a long side parting, sort of like curtains. Looking back, my fashion was pretty bad actually but of course at the time I thought I was cool. I used to tie rags around my feet as well, around my calves, over my boots. It was a bit weird. I never got completely punky with it but I used to love that trendy headband and long hair combination. That and baggy jeans.

Have you ever met any of your popstar idols? And who would you most like to meet?

I’ve met Boy George, who was a real inspiration to me growing up. I just loved how outspoken he was and how he dressed. I’ve met him a few times actually and he’s great company. I got to meet Whitney Houston before she died, which was amazing, and Olivia Newton-John. I’ve also met Liza Minnelli, Bette Midler, Annie Lennox... quite a few people, in fact. I haven’t met Barbra Streisand yet but I’d really like to because I’ve been listening to her music my entire life.

You work a lot on TV but what do you most love about the theatre?

I grew up with theatre and the first show I saw was Jesus Christ Superstar. Then I became a professional dancer and my first musical was West Side Story. I’ve been in the theatre all my life really and I’ve never, ever given it up. I’ve either been directing, choreographing, dancing performing or whatever. My favourite thing is directing and choreographing. I only started performing for panto, then in 2015 I was asked to do Annie and this year I’m doing The Wizard of Oz as the Wicked Witch. I love performing but, as I say, directing and choreographing is what I enjoy the most.

What do you hope people take away from seeing NOW That’s What I Call A Musical?

I think people will learn something about themselves. The story will prompt them to reflect on their lives to date and how it’s all worked out for them - what their hopes and aspirations were and how that fuelled whatever passion they had to help them become who they are today. People will see themselves in the show and that’s one of the many things that’s really great about it, along with the story, the costumes, the dancing, the comedy and all that fantastic music.

Don’t miss out on this unforgettable journey through music and memories—book your tickets now for NOW That’s What I Call A Musical at the Mayflower Theatre.

Expert tips to bring warmth and harmony to your home

From period conversions to Victorian homes, here’s the lowdown on heating older buildings, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

One of the luxuries of living in a listed or period property are the decorative features such as a fireplace, tiled flooring or stylish sash windows.

But compared to a new build or modern apartment, what you gain in aesthetics you sometimes lose in warmth – namely double glazing, insulation and better sealing around windows and doors.

And with the chilly cold snap, blocking out those draughts is a hot topic of conversation – and a golden opportunity to introduce soft furnishings and considered choices to put the ‘welcome’ into your home.

“This often means focusing on creating a warm, cosy atmosphere that enhances everyday living,” says Nick Cryer, founder of Berkeley Place, who specialise in residential renovation, and refurbishment of listed and period properties. “These buildings often come with an abundance of charm, unique architectural details and the character inherent in period homes.”

However, as Cryer points out, they also bring the challenge of seamlessly integrating contemporary features essential for modern comfort and efficiency, especially where preserving historical elements is key.

To bring a warm embrace and cushy up your space, Cryer shares his top tips for snuggle season…

ABOVE

Insulation

is key

“A good place to start in creating a cosier environment is with the building envelope itself,” advises Cryer. “The better insulated a space is, the more effective it will be at retaining warmth. Adding insulation and double glazing, where feasible, can dramatically improve a home’s thermal performance while maintaining its original aesthetic.”

He says slimline double glazing, in particular, is ideal for period properties, as it offers the insulating benefits of modern windows with a slim profile that fits in seamlessly with historical frames.

“By upgrading the building’s envelope in this way, warmth is retained more effectively, ensuring a consistent, comfortable temperature in winter,” notes Cryer.

“It’s equally important to address issues such as dampness or poor ventilation, as these can detract from a space’s cosiness and impact overall air quality.”

Create

chalet-style cosiness

For a truly cosy atmosphere, ski chalets offer inspiring examples of design that’s built to counter winter’s chill, suggests Cryer. “Designed as warm, inviting retreats, chalets are made to feel welcoming after a day outdoors.”

“Central to this aesthetic are open fireplaces or woodburning stoves, which provide not only heat but also the comforting ambiance of a flickering glow.

“Fireplaces are often the heart of a chalet’s living space, with cosy seating areas arranged around them, layered with plush throw blankets, woollen or faux fur pillows, and other soft fabrics that beckon people to settle in and relax.” We’re in.

Cue heavy curtains for colder months

Much more than window dressing with some wow factor…

They can be hung on a curtain pole in a hallway, in place of a door, with extra length for insulation to double up as a draught excluder. Or in an entrance hall to make a stylish statement and stop cold air passing through.

As Cryer puts it: “Adding heavy, insulating curtains in natural fabrics like wool or linen is another way chalets create warmth and comfort.

“Thick curtains help prevent draughts, providing insulation while adding visual softness and a sense of enclosure that makes the space feel protected from the outside elements.

“Floor-length curtains, in rich earth tones or deep hues can add a touch of rustic elegance that complements period details – and helps draw warmth into the room.”

Soft lighting scheme

Lighting is another powerful tool in creating a warm, inviting atmosphere, highlights Cryer. “Overhead lights can sometimes feel harsh, so consider replacing them with softer options such as table lamps, floor lamps, or wall sconces equipped with warm-toned bulbs.”

“This softer, diffused lighting creates an intimate glow that enhances a room’s cosiness. Candles are particularly effective at adding warmth and ambiance, and they bring a flickering light that’s perfect for creating a snug setting.

“Fairy lights or string lights add a whimsical, soft look when draped over shelves, mirrors, or headboards, and they’re particularly ideal for winter evenings when extra warmth is needed.”

Bring the outdoors in

Natural materials like wood and stone are foundational in chalet interiors, contributing to a grounded, rustic charm, says Cryer. “These materials help bring the outdoors in, echoing rugged landscapes and creating a sense of being connected to nature.”

“By incorporating some of these elements into period properties, such as warm-toned wood accents, stone detailing or reclaimed wood beams, recreates a cosy, grounded feeling that complements the historic beauty of listed homes.”

He continues: “Wooden elements, whether in the form of furniture, wall panels, or even small accents, add warmth and character that lend a sense of heritage to the space.”

Texture and tone for snugness and timeless appeal “Finally, layering textures throughout the room adds both physical and visual warmth. This can be achieved by adding plush throw blankets to sofas, mixing pillows in different fabrics like wool, velvet, or faux fur – and placing area rugs underfoot to soften the space.”

“Textures add dimension and cosiness, inviting people to interact with the space in a tactile way that enhances comfort – by choosing rich fabrics and layered textiles, you create a warmth that’s as much about feel as it is about appearance,” underlines Cryer.

Indeed, integrating modern efficiency with the charm of period details results in spaces that are as cosy as they are beautiful, adds Cryer, making homes feel like true sanctuaries from the winter chill.

How Phuket is combatting overtourism to reclaim its spiritual appeal

Thirty years after it opened, Banyan Tree Phuket is restoring a sense of calm to the popular Thai island, says Luke O’Reilly.

Lying flat on the floor of a dimly lit room, I feel a soft vibration ringing in my chest. The sensation gets stronger and louder until chimes break in, releasing any tension and causing me to sink further into my exercise mat.

I am taking part in an early morning singing bowl meditation session at Banyan Tree hotel in Phuket. The serene setting is a world away from the chaotic streets and packed beaches of Thailand’s popular holiday island, where white sand beaches fringed by swaying palms create the perfect postcard scenes.

But this is a very different stretch of the South East Asian destination; a hideaway recalling the blissful days before mass tourism arrived.

Phuket, which has a population of around 400,000 people, saw more than 11 million visitors in 2023, with around eight million of them from abroad, according to Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

For several years, concerns of overtourism have been bubbling away, particularly when it comes to overloaded infrastructure; in high season, roads can be jam-packed with traffic.

RIGHT

But Banyan Tree Phuket, a grand dame of the island celebrating its 30th birthday at the end of October, is making every effort to restore a sense of calm.

Humble beginnings

Founded on the site of a former tin mine, the hotel is a sustainability success story. Owner Ho Kwon Ping and his wife Claire Chiang bought the land it sits on due to the remarkable blue colour of its lagoon.

However, upon further investigation they realised the colour had been caused by the mine, and the land was in need of regeneration.

With the help of local workers, they restored the land bit by bit, creating a verdant paradise of tropical flowers and birdsong.

Instead of building a holiday home, they decided to construct a hotel, founding what would become one of the largest luxury hotel groups in Asia, and transforming the Thalang District of Phuket.

However, as the hotel’s success grew, so did the popularity of Phuket, with the island becoming one of Thailand’s premier tourism destinations. Recognising the impact of tourism, both positive and negative, Banyan Tree has taken a proactive approach by working with the local community.

Supporting the local community

As part of several ongoing outreach projects, hotel guests are invited to get their hands dirty. I experience this first hand when I’m handed a pot of paint and directed towards the playground of the local primary school. School kids smile shyly and tell me their favourite subject is English, while I get to work painting the slide and climbing frame.

It’s tough work under the gruelling Thai sun, but the laughter of the children and the upbeat attitude of their teachers makes the time fly by. Our work finished, we are rewarded by bottles of freshly squeezed orange juice handed to us by the children.

LEFT

The hotel is deeply embedded in the local community, organising beach clean-ups, maintenance of a mangrove plantation, and a yearly sea turtle conservation project. It also runs a vocational training program that provides education and employment in the hotel.

A stand-out property

Outreach visits are just one of the ways Banyan Tree sets Phuket itself apart from the average luxury hotel on the island. Despite being a short walk from the sea, the hotel lacks a waterfront. Instead, it focuses on offering guests a unique holistic experience, complete with spa and golf course.

I’m staying in one of the property’s Serenity Pool Villas, which features a private swimming pool and jet pool as well as a tree-lined sunbathing area.

On my second morning at the hotel, I order the floating breakfast. Two waiters arrive at my villa carrying an enormous wicker tray filled with food platters, which they carefully lay in the pool.

I swim after my meal and push it around the pool as I tuck in. The spread includes perfectly steamed prawn dumplings, chicken and fried rice, as well as coffee and juice.

As well as room service, the hotel includes five distinctive restaurants and two bars including Thai restaurant Saffron and the new Tin Tapas bar, which pays homage to the hotel’s origins as a tin mine.

I try both during my visit. The cooking at Saffron is delicate and refined. For my starter, I have a light and fluffy sea bass salad with sour green mango, followed by the flambe tenderloin with Thai whisky sauce for my main. However, my highlight of the meal is the dessert: chestnut with caramelised plum sugar and salted coconut sauce.

ABOVE

The private pool at the Serenity Pool Villa | BanyanTree/PA

At the Tin Tapas bar, which is set on a pier in the middle of the lagoon, I order a negroni and watch the sun set over the trees. There is something magical about the sunset in Thailand, you will see shades of red and orange that you never knew existed. Birds dip and swing over the lagoon as the light fades into dusk. I have never felt more at peace.

I can see why guests keep coming back to Banyan Tree Phuket year after year. Far from any crowds or chaos, it is truly a sanctuary and a reminder of why Phuket is such a special place.

Print isn’t dead: Why paper beats pixels every time

We chat with our own Ross Stallion, Director of House & Lifestyle magazine about the power of local print advertising.

House & Lifestyle magazine has been a trusted name in local media for years, and behind its success is the expertise of Ross Stallion. We sat down with him to explore the benefits of print advertising and understand why it stands out in a digitaldominated world.

Ross, in an era where digital advertising is everywhere, why do you believe print advertising is still effective?

Great question! Print advertising, especially in a trusted local magazine like House & Lifestyle, is powerful because it has a tangible presence. When people hold a magazine in their hands, they engage with it

on a personal level. Unlike digital ads, which can feel fleeting, print ads linger and leave a lasting impression. Readers tend to trust and value the content in a reputable print magazine more than what they see online, where ads are often seen as intrusive.

You mentioned trust. Can you tell us more about how trust plays a role in print advertising?

Trust is everything in advertising. Studies show that people inherently trust print media more than digital because it feels more authentic and curated. Our readers pick up House & Lifestyle knowing they’re going to see quality, credible content, including ads. When a business advertises with us, it gains a sense of credibility by association, which can be crucial in convincing local customers to engage with the brand.

What makes House & Lifestyle magazine unique in the world of local print media?

House & Lifestyle stands out because we’re more than just a magazine; we’re part of the community. We feature local businesses, artisans, designers, and home improvement professionals who resonate with our audience. Every edition is carefully curated to reflect the unique lifestyle of our readers, making it the perfect platform for local businesses to reach people who value quality, style, and a sense of home.

Some say that digital advertising provides more data and analytics. How does print advertising provide value in comparison?

While digital offers click-through rates and views, print provides something equally valuable: presence and recall. Readers of House & Lifestyle spend time with our

magazine. Our ads aren’t just glanced over; they’re seen repeatedly and in a trusted context. We offer longevity and impact, which data alone can’t capture. Plus, we often hear from our advertisers about the direct business they get from people who saw their ad in our magazine—proof that print leads to real results.

Can you explain how House & Lifestyle can actually help businesses close sales?

Absolutely. We provide a high-quality, locally-focused platform that helps businesses build credibility and trust, which are crucial for sales. Imagine a local reader considering a renovation—they see a trusted local contractor’s ad in House & Lifestyle. That ad can be the nudge they need to reach out and start a conversation. For many readers, seeing a business in our magazine legitimises it and makes them more comfortable moving forward with a purchase or partnership.

How does print advertising help businesses build long-term brand trust?

Print advertising creates an enduring brand image. When businesses consistently appear in House & Lifestyle, they become a familiar name that people recognise and trust. Over time, our readers start to see these brands as part of the community, which builds long-term loyalty.

Being in print isn’t just about visibility; it’s about becoming a trusted voice that readers know will be there edition after edition.

What would you say to business owners who feel like online ads are cheaper and “get the job done” faster?

Online ads may be quick, but they’re often temporary. Print is an investment in brandbuilding. When you advertise with us, you’re aligning your brand with a publication that readers trust and spend time with. A single print ad can continue to resonate with a reader for weeks, even months. Plus, it’s an environment without the noise of online distractions. In many ways, the slower, more thoughtful impact of print can be more valuable than the immediate impressions of digital ads.

How do you ensure that ads in House & Lifestyle are of high quality and relevant to the audience?

We’re very selective about the brands and businesses we feature. Our magazine has a specific focus on home, lifestyle, and local quality, so we ensure our ads are in line with this ethos. Each ad is crafted to reflect the aesthetic and standard that our readers expect, which means it has a greater chance of resonating. We also work closely with advertisers to create content that feels cohesive with the magazine.

What kind of businesses do you think benefit the most from advertising in House & Lifestyle?

Our readers are homeowners, renovators, and people who love to invest in their living spaces and community. Businesses that cater to home improvement, interior design, local dining, and lifestyle services see great results with us. Our audience loves discovering quality local businesses they can trust. If you’re a brand that wants to be part of a customer’s journey to build their perfect home, our magazine is the perfect fit.

For a business considering its next advertising move, why should they choose House & Lifestyle magazine?

Choosing House & Lifestyle means choosing a trusted, respected local platform that brings genuine results. We offer businesses a chance to connect deeply with their ideal customers, who are ready to engage and invest in quality. Print advertising with us isn’t just about one ad; it’s about becoming part of our readers’

How to make the most of your living space as the nights draw in

Architect and TV presenter George Clarke reveals his top tips to style up your sitting room.

With winter in full swing and everyone gravitating indoors, our living rooms are about to see most of this season’s action.

Whether it’s cinema nights with the kids, socialising with friends or simply curling up with a good book, your communal space will undoubtedly become the centre point of everyday living.

So how to bring the feel-good factor to your downtime?

Here, architect and TV presenter George Clarke, highlights a few ways to accommodate the needs of multiple generations… whilst catering to the demands of awkward spaces in a smart and stylish way.

Create intimate zones

The layout of our living rooms has changed markedly over the years, as we all aim to create multi-functional spaces to serve many needs, notes Clarke.

Practical as well as aesthetically pleasing, think elements to help us relax, entertain and possibly work from home, alongside other activities.

“Creating intimate zones, however small, is key in designing a space that delivers on multiple briefs,” explains Clarke.

“And although many rooms don’t offer symmetrical proportions – many being long and narrow with special considerations, such as doors in awkward places – there are a few ways to achieve breakaway zones.”

The key when working to the quirks of your layout, especially when rearranging furniture, is to consider comfort, ease of movement and flow, highlights Clarke.

ABOVE

LEFT

RIGHT

“Avoid placing everything around a room’s edges, which can result in too much empty space at the centre.” He continues. “Instead, opt to delineate your scheme, pulling furniture into more intimate arrangements.”

The back of a sofa can work well as a room divider, but be sure to choose furniture that looks appealing from all angles, as sides and backs will be on display as well as fronts, notes Clarke.

“And remember, it’s not just sofas that create convivial family zones. Beautifully crafted armchairs are also having a moment.”

“Think about pieces that complement each other rather than match, and try out informal circular groupings anchored by a generous footstool to encourage lingering.”

Large rugs stretched across rooms are a simple and effective way to create a natural divide for seating, eating and working, suggests Clarke.

“And bespoke bookshelves as room dividers and cabinetry that contain pull-out desks are a useful design solution.”

Put comfort first

“Comfort is king when it comes to the ideal living room,” underlines Clarke. “In fact, it was voted as the number one requirement by a long way in Sofology’s How We Live Now report which included independent consumer research, with the TV coming in as a not-soclose second.

“Whether you go for modernist-shaped seating, scrolled arms, button tuck detailing or tapered legs, it turns out the style of our seating is a matter of personal taste, but the feeling of wellbeing it elicits is non-negotiable.”

Modular sofas with flexible configurations work well, as does a selection of moveable furniture, including lightweight side tables that can be pulled into place for a spot of home-working, advises Clark.

“Task lighting that can be directed with ease, deep ottomans and plenty of plugs and USB ports,” he adds.

Entertain a seasonal cinemascape

If the TV promises to be central to enjoying your living room over the winter, Clarke recommends switching things up with a more cinematic experience, depending on your budget.

“Although screening rooms are often found in basement spaces and middle rooms of period homes benefitting from reduced natural light, they can also work within a regular living space,” suggests Clarke.

If a cinema-style sofa isn’t on the cards this Christmas, he says to consider layering the seating you have – and surround it with sumptuous textures and rich colours to create a cosseting escape.

“There’ll be some classic movies showing at this time of year, and a comfortable set up will make long winter nights all the more enjoyable.”

Get colour happy

As Clarke points out, incorporating bright colours and bold patterns adds depth and vibrancy that can help bring a welcome lightness to winter months.

Most people opt for white or neutral walls to help make a room appear larger, notes Clarke, but a single colour wash wall or brightly painted shelving can help brighten things up.

“Stylists I’ve worked with in the past have said when it comes to colour and pattern, breaking the rules rather than following specific trends often produces the best results.”

“I love this idea, especially as one in five of us updates our living spaces on a yearly basis. Changing the colour of a living room doesn’t have to cost the earth or represent a long-standing commitment – and the results can be surprising.”

Think social

It’s the season for socialising and where better than in the comfort of your own home…

“Open plan kitchens-cum-living rooms are perfect for enjoying a more relaxed approach to hosting,” says Clarke. “We know people migrate to the living room in winter, so rethinking the space slightly to cater for this can really help take the stress out of having people over.

“Sitting rooms with alcoves offer a wealth of opportunity when it comes to socialising, so switch out books for something more appetising and useful,” suggests Clarke.

“Built-in bars might not be to everybody’s taste, but temporary pieces like a retro drinks trolley can help create a zone within a living room – offering muchneeded storage and help bring the fun to an evening with friends.”

Lower heating bills and boost comfort with Poole Joinery’s expertise

As the new year unfolds, it’s the perfect time to assess your home’s energy efficiency and consider improvements that can create a warmer, more comfortable living environment while reducing heating bills. Poole Joinery, with over 25 years of experience serving Poole and the surrounding areas, offers a range of highquality, energy-efficient solutions tailored to your needs.

Enhancing Energy Efficiency

Windows and doors are critical components in maintaining your home’s thermal performance. Inefficient or outdated installations can lead to significant heat loss, causing your heating system to work harder and increasing energy costs. Poole Joinery provides a variety of window and door options designed to enhance energy efficiency:

• Double-Glazed Windows: Our doubleglazed windows are engineered to improve thermal insulation, helping to keep your home warm during the colder months. By reducing heat loss, these windows can contribute to lower energy bills and a more comfortable indoor environment. Is triple glazing better than double? Yes and no – in some circumstances, double glazing can provide better insulation and soundproofing than triple glazing, proving that 3 is not always better than 2. Contact us for more information.

• Composite Doors: Combining durability with excellent thermal performance, our composite doors help prevent heat loss and enhance your home’s energy efficiency. Available in a range of styles and finishes, they also add aesthetic appeal to your property.

Additional Benefits of Upgrading with Poole Joinery

Beyond energy savings, upgrading your windows and doors with Poole Joinery offers several advantages:

• Enhanced Comfort: Improved insulation leads to a more consistent indoor temperature, eliminating cold drafts and creating a cosier living space.

• Increased Property Value: Energyefficient upgrades are attractive to potential buyers, potentially increasing your home’s market value.

These are the key 2025 interior trends to know about now

Here’s how to get the look and be ahead of the game.

Whether you’re looking to transform a room or introduce a design aesthetic for the new year, it’s important to consider what kind of style statement you want to make.

Alysha Alli, interior design lead at Redrow, says she’s seen hundreds of trends come and go. “And whilst following a trend can have a strong impact, be careful when making major changes in the home,” notes Alli. “Rather than committing fully, opt for small accessorybased changes as opposed to entire redecoration projects – and always remember to have the forward vision to see what’s coming up next,” advises Alli.

Throughout the year, the designer says she’s seen many interesting projects and emerging themes set to take 2025 by storm.

Here’s what should be on your radar…

Set on sustainability

“Sustainability will continue to be at the forefront of interior design,” states Alli. “People are consciously choosing to shop local, support small businesses by sourcing items from Etsy, upcycle things they have –or have found on a marketplace or in a charity shop –rather than buying mass-produced interior items.”

The ‘life cycle’ of a product is key too: tracking where something is from, especially opting for British-made items, is going to be a real growing trend for 2025, notes Alli.

“Think fabrics, pottery and other crafts involving artisanal techniques that will lend authenticity, but exuberance to your interiors. These techniques and values in craftsmanship lend amazing keepsake value to your interiors – and also the environment.”

Adaptable spaces for modern lifestyles

The concept of flexible living is gaining traction as homeowners seek spaces that can adapt to their changing needs, says Ali.

“Function-first and adaptive design are key, with a focus on long-term investment. Think modular furniture that can be reconfigured for different uses, rooms that serve multiple purposes – making the most of the spaces available to you.”

This trend is all about creating versatile spaces which can evolve with the homeowner’s lifestyle, highlights Ali, making every square foot count. “It’s all about making the space work for you, rather than you having to work for space.”

For example, you may decide to set up a workstation within a bedroom set-up, using a sofa bed and dressing table-come-desk, suggests Alli.

Or invest in a coffee table or console with a hidden compartment that folds out to become a desk – and can be folded back down and stored away at the end of the working day.

Lowkey luxury

“Lowkey luxury is set to redefine what we see as elegance in 2025,” opines Alli. Think natural materials and soft minimalism, as she says this trend emphasises timeless pieces that exude understated sophistication. “Because shouting about luxury is no longer considered trendy.”

Kitchen with natural wood finishes and neutral palette to illustrate lowkey luxury trend | B&Q/PA

Wood, stone and linen should take centre stage, complemented by a neutral colour palette that creates a serene atmosphere, advises Alli.

“The focus is on quality over quantity, with carefully curated pieces that add a touch of luxury without overwhelming the space.

“As the trend suggests here, less is almost certainly more in this instance.”

Bold and bright

If dopamine decor, showy shades and pattern is more your vibe, the bold and bright trend is all about unapologetic colour and form, explains Alli.

“This trend re-contextualises contemporary silhouettes with vibrant hues and daring patterns,” underlines Alli. “It’s a celebration of individuality and creativity, encouraging homeowners to experiment with bold colour combinations and eye-catching designs.

“Layering bold purples, oranges and greens with paint, then matching a heavy fabric on window treatments and sofas to set this off will be prevalent next year.”

She continues: “The Dulux Colour of the Year 2025 True Joy [uplifting yellow] is another example of the trend for bold and bright colour choices. Yellow tones bring a sense of optimism to the home along with pops of colour.”

It’s a great gender-neutral way of adding colour to a nursery and works well in older children and teenagers’ bedrooms, says Alli. “Fabrics with a pop of this specific yellow tone, such as accent cushions, offer a subtle way to style your home with this trend.”

For those who are averse to too much tech then the 5 E-Tech may not be entirely your thing as it’s filled with the latest technology including built-in Google services with EVoptimised navigation to its ability to power electric devices from the car.

Standard fare across the range includes 18-inch diamond cut alloy wheels a 10.1inch central display and 7-inch digital driver information display, auto air conditioning, wireless smartphone (Apple CarPlay + Android Auto), cruise control, driver attention alert and traffic sign recognition with speed alert, rear parking sensors and full LED front and rear lighting.

Further up the range adaptive cruise control with stop & go, wireless phone charging, rear-view camera, two-tone paint options, heated steering wheel, heated front seats with lumbar adjustment, adaptive cruise control and hands-free parking are included.

The interior of Renault 5 has denim upholstery, made from recycled materials, while the top line trim level has seats in heather yellow bearing a large printed ‘5’. A choice of body colours will be available from launch, two of which – Pop Yellow! and Pop Green! – are reminiscent of iconic shades that were present in the 1970s Renault 5.

The 120hp 40kwh battery model reaches the benchmark 62 mph in 9 seconds with its larger capacity 150hp 52kwh version shaving just over a second in a time of 7.9 seconds. From a performance point of view these aren’t especially quick times but one suspects the 5 E-Tech will prove my longheld view that a car doesn’t need to be fast to be fun.

The 5 E-Tech EV, is what Renault call a modern reinvention of the iconic original and like the Fiat 500, although it came from a combustion vehicle originally, should bring some interest to the world of small electric vehicles.

LAND ROVER DEFENDER – IMPRESSIVE, ASSURED, CAPABLE BUT EXPENSIVE

It was one of the most eagerly anticipated launches in recent years, it followed on from a truly iconic predecessor that had a world-wide following and a history from back in the immediate post war years. The new Defender had a lot to live up to, and I think it fair to say it has done the job. Initial criticism about it being a ‘soft’ version of the original was arguably right but missed the point that Land Rover has moved all its products upmarket and the Defender was the last of the old guard.

Unbelievably it is not far short of five years since the first new Defender models were delivered to eager customers. While they have become a more common sight on the road, they still retain a certain head turning ability. The range has grown and now encompasses three wheelbase variants from the 90 through to the more heavyweight 130 and there’s the traditional power sources of petrol and diesel but with the addition of both mild and plug-in hybrid. There’s even a V8 in the petrol line-up

Prices start from a not inconsiderable £58,310 for the lead-in Defender 90, even the commercial version starts at £57,420. There is a plethora of optional extras that can mount alarmingly on the cost front to the extent you’d think the folk at Land Rover have been taking lessons from German motor manufacturers.

The standard specification across the range is actually quite good and the interior looks and feels special. There’s lots of space, an open dash incorporating a central touchscreen and storage, and also buttons. Hallelujah! The touchscreen

provides near perfect clarity and is intuitive in its operation, not something one can say about many such systems.

The Defender is big! However, its large size, especially in 110 form as tested, means it’s a surprise how easily it is guided through any situation whether on or off-road. Part of that ease is undoubtedly the excellent visibility and on-board assistance tech, however it’s also down to the steering and confidence inspiring ride.

My 110 X-Dynamic SE test model costs from £67,820, and its 3.0-litre straight six diesel engine, and smooth changing 8-speed automatic transmission, is immensely capable. Point the Defender in any direction, quite literally as roads not necessarily required, and it’s an impressive and comfortable cruiser, assured off-roader and capable load carrier. It should be given the pricing, but the Defender is an object lesson in how to produce a car for all seasons and all occasions.

SUZUKI REVEAL FIRST FULL EV –THE E VITARA

It may look like a standard update and facelift of the Vitara, already a capable and hugely popular model for the Japanese car maker, but this is a Vitara with a difference.

Suzuki has unveiled its first massproduction full EV, the e VITARA. Production will commence at Suzuki’s plant in India in spring next year, with sales expected to begin in various countries, including Europe, India, and Japan, in summer 2025.

e VITARA is based on a concept model which was showcased at the Auto Expo held in India in January 2023, and at the JAPAN MOBILITY SHOW in October of the same year. It marks Suzuki’s first global strategic BEV model and e VITARA features

an electric 4WD system, ALLGRIP-e, that provides not only off-road capability but also powerful performance.

The exterior features a striking design characterised by large-diameter tyres and a long wheelbase, while the interior incorporates an integrated display with advanced equipment and tough-looking panels and centre console.

Its BEV powertrain consists of the highly efficient eAxle that integrates the motor and inverter, along with the lithium iron-

phosphate batteries designed for safety and reliability. It achieves the characteristic EV nimble acceleration from standstill and sharp acceleration during overtaking from low to high speeds.

The electric 4WD system is driven by two independent eAxles and an electric 4WD system that utilizes Suzuki’s acknowledged expertise in four- wheel drive technology, including a Trail mode that enables a smooth departure from rough terrain by applying brakes to spinning tires and distributing drive torque to the opposite tyre (LSD function).

This is a new and exciting addition to Suzuki’s line-up and carrying the Vitara name will surely assist in attracting buyers. Key to the e VITARA’s success will be its range and charging options, but more important will be price as Suzuki has always been able to offer competitive pricing and make their cars eminently affordable.

AUDI Q5 SPORTBACK – SCULPTURED, SLEEK

Audi is expanding its model range with a coupé, the Q5 Sportback. On sale in the UK from January next year it will be priced from £52,450 with the first customer deliveries due in May 2025.

The Q5 Sportback combines characteristics typical of an SUV, such as versatility and space, with a more sculptured silhouette and characteristic sloping rear line. It’s sleeker than its predecessor with razorsharp, sculptural headlights that lend the car a purposeful stance.

The idea of an SUV Coupe isn’t new and other manufacturers, such as BMW‘s X6 and Mercedes Benz’s GLE, have their own entrants in this market. Audi’s Q5 Sportback arguably lacks the visual bulk of some competitors with a more design led style.

Based on a platform for conventionally powered vehicles with longitudinal combustion engines, it comes equipped at launch with MHEV plus technology. The new 48-volt MHEV plus electrical system

AND MILD HYBRID POWER

supports the combustion engine reducing emissions and increasing performance. The vehicle is also capable of limited allelectric manoeuvring and parking.

The 48-volt electrical system enables the use of an electric air conditioning compressor. This ensures the AC continues operating at full power, maintaining a comfortable interior temperature even when the engine is switched off, such as when coasting or at a red light.

The lithium-ion battery for vehicles with MHEV plus is based on lithium ferro-

phosphate chemistry and boasts a storage capacity of 1.7kWh. The primary function of the belt alternator starter (BAS) is to start the engine and supply electrical power to the battery. The BAS enables stretches of electric driving and during braking, it returns energy to the battery (recuperation) with up to 25kW of power. Partial electrification, in the form of mild hybrid will later see plug-in hybrids with a larger battery and external charger.

In the UK, the Audi Q5 Sportback specification line up mirrors the SUV will be available with three engines at launch with further variants to follow. All versions come equipped with MHEV plus technology, which briefly generates up to 24PS (18kW) of additional power. All models in the series also use the S tronic seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and quattro all-wheel drive.

Q5 Sportback is priced at £2,500 above the equivalent Q5 SUV. The powertrain line-up is consistent across both body styles, as are the specification options: Sport, S line, and Edition 1.

NEW BLACK EDITIONS BRING BAGS OF EXTRA STYLE TO VOLKSWAGEN SUVS

VW has launched some new Black editions which sit above R-Line trim and come with black exterior styling elements including 18-inch alloys for the T-Cross and 20-inch for the Tiguan. Both cars also have matrix headlamps, which can bathe roads in up to 500 metres of bright light, and LED rear tail lights with dynamic turn signals. The Tiguan Black Edition also gains a driver assistance package, and the T-Cross Black Edition customers can opt for the upgraded Pure white paint colour at no extra cost.

Two petrol engines are available for the T-Cross, a 1.5 TSI 115 PS unit, paired with either a manual or automatic direct-shift gearbox (DSG), and a 1.5 TSI 150 PS with DSG.

The Tiguan is available with a choice of two 2.0 TSI engines allied to DSG and 4MOTION all-wheel drive – a powerful 265 PS version and a 204 PS power plant that is completely

new to the UK Tiguan line-up. Prices for the T-Cross Black Edition and Tiguan Black Edition start from £29,985 and £46,605 respectively.

Black Editions have long been a popular choice among Volkswagen drivers seeking enhanced style and presence. These newcomers bring the number of Black Editions in the Volkswagen range to eight, adding to the Polo, Taigo, T-Roc, T-Roc R, Golf Hatch and Golf R Black Editions unveiled early last year.

The T-Cross was updated at the start of this year with a revamped design, enhanced standard equipment, Volkswagen’s latest infotainment technology and a newly designed interior. The Tiguan is Volkswagen’s biggest-selling model worldwide. The all-new version launched last year has a completely new look inside and out, including a multi-function driving experience switch with integrated OLED display. The vehicle is built on the latest version of Volkswagen Group’s highly successful modular transverse matrix platform, MQB-evo, which allows for a host of new systems and drive profiles to be included.

The new 2.0 TSI engine with 204 PS, DSG and 4MOTION for the Tiguan Black Edition is also being added to the Tiguan R-Line trim. It is priced from £45,605.

THE NEW MERCEDES-AMG PURESPEED

As the first model in the strictly limited Mercedes-Benz Mythos series, the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed celebrated its world premiere at the Formula 1TM Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The uncompromising realisation of a fully open, two-seater performance car with no roof or windscreen is a tribute to racing and certainly offers a different driving experience. The car

celebrates Mercedes-Benz’s tradition in motorsport with its racing car design, the exclusive small series is strictly limited to 250 models.

One of the car’s highlights is the HALO system, which the car uses instead of the conventional A-pillar. This element was inspired by the premier class of motorsport and has been part of every Formula 1TM vehicle since 2018. It protects the driver’s head in the event of an accident. The roll-

over protection system also features two rigid roll bars that are concealed beneath the aerodynamic scoops.

There are also two aerodynamically optimised helmets designed and manufactured specifically for the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed. They come in the colour of the car and have an intercom communication system. The helmets allow the driver and passenger to communicate clearly, even at high speeds.

As an additional feature, smartphones can be paired with the intercom system, allowing the driver and passenger to talk on the phone and listen to music through the helmets’ speakers.

Many other features are also a tribute to motorsport. The two scoops behind the seats bear the AMG emblem and are reminiscent of legendary racing cars such as the 300 SLR, the car that Stirling Moss and Denis

Jenkinson drove to victory at the 1955 Mille Miglia (a 1,000-mile race) in Italy. Fittingly, the PureSpeed comes in an exclusive Silver Arrow finish in mystic silver magno.

To protect the car from inclement weather such as rain or storms when parked, a protective weather cover is available as standard. It is stretched over the interior, including the HALO, and fastened to the wheel arches in the traditional way. Each customer also receives a custom-made, PureSpeed specific AMG indoor car cover. With a breathable outer skin of tearresistant synthetic fibres and an anti-static inner fabric of flannel, it protects the car from dust and scratches in the garage.

The AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine with 430 kW (585 PS) of maximum power and 800 Nm of maximum torque provides dynamic propulsion and driving performance. The radically open design makes even lower speeds feel subjectively much faster. But the objective figures are impressive as well: the car goes from zero to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds, with a top speed of 195 mph.

Expert tips for running in the dark this winter

From wearing appropriate clothing to altering your route, here’s how to stay one step ahead when it comes to running in the dark.

It can be hard to maintain your running mojo in the cold depths of winter – especially when the days begin to get shorter and darker.

Whether you’re prone to pounding the pavements in the morning or evening, battling against the elements this time of year can be challenging even for the most seasoned of runners – from both a motivational and, vitally, a safety perspective.

However, if you exercise caution, a change in routine needn’t be the case.

We have spoken to some running experts who have shared their top tips on how to achieve your PB in the dark, stress free.

Stay visible

Reflective gear helps drivers and other runners spot you from a distance.

“In low light, even a small amount of reflectivity can make a huge difference,” says Michael Betts, director at TRAINFITNESS who has coached hundreds of runners during his 30+ years as a personal trainer. “Bright colours and reflective strips ensure you’re not blending into the darkness, which reduces the risk of accidents.”

Light up your path

“If you regularly run early in the morning or late at night, consider going one step further and investing in a quality running head torch,” suggests Claire Sebburn,

experienced runner and Runners Need product expert. “A head torch will give you better visibility of the path ahead and highlight your presence to others.

“Wearable lights are also handy if you’re running the trails or out on the fells, where there’s less in the way of streetlights and other urban light sources.”

Adjust your route

Betts encourages even the most seasoned of runners to avoid isolated or poorly lit areas where it’s difficult to see what’s around you.

“Parks, alleys or areas with uneven terrain can also be risky, especially if you’re not familiar with the route,” says Betts. “Stick to well-trafficked streets with pavements where there’s more visibility and people around.”

Take your phone

“Many of us enjoy switching off when running, however I always recommend having your phone on you when you’re out and about,” says Sebburn. “A lightweight, sweat-wicking phone holder that keeps your mobile safe is an easy way to carry your phone while running.

“Alternatively, consider investing in a hydration vest or backpack, so you can keep all your belongings in one place, with access to water as a bonus.”

Run against the traffic

“When out in poor light always ensure you run against the traffic so you can take notice of potential dangers,” advises Sarah Campus, personal trainer, runner and founder of wellness platform LDN MUMS FITNESS. “This way you will notice headlights and can get out of the way of cars and other road users fast and safely.”

Be extra cautious

“Slow down if you’re unsure about the terrain, and be extra cautious around kerbs and uneven pavements,” says Betts.

Turn down your music

“Although listening to loud music is a fantastic way to keep motivated, using headphones at top volume can be a distraction that lessens how alert you are to your surroundings,” forewarns Sebburn. “When lighting conditions are poor, it’s a challenge to spot obstacles like vehicles and other runners, and with reduced hearing you’re less likely to run aware.” ABOVE

Tell someone where you are going

“Tell someone you are going running, and where abouts you intend to run and when you intend to be back so they can look out for you,” recommends Campus.

Run with others

“If your running routes are less appealing in the darker months, but you’re still keen to continue running, choose to run with a friend or as part of a group,” recommends Sebburn. “Joining a local running club is a super source of support and motivation, and that’s just what’s needed when running in the dark.”

Betts adds: “It sounds like a cliché, but there’s safety in numbers, and you’re less likely to face issues if you’re with others. If an accident does happen then it makes getting help easier.”

How to use an air fryer to make comfort food healthier!

The food content creator talks to Lauren Taylor about the influence of her grandparents on her recipes and the air fryer craze.

TikTok sensation Christina Kynigos, aka @ veryhungrygreek, is on a mission to change diet culture by proving that it’s possible to tuck into carbs, meat and cheese daily while staying healthy.

With recipes like ‘marry me chicken pie’, ‘bolognese tacos’ and ‘pepperoni pizza toastie’, some of the 34-year-old home cook and content creator’s recipes have garnered millions of views on the social media platform.

With Greek-Cypriot heritage, Kynigos says: “We have a lot of carbs in our food, we also have a lot of olive oil in our food, we are very meat heavy as well.” So she wanted to embrace comforting, delicious dishes in generous portions – but make them lighter in calories.

“I’ve lived with my grandparents literally all my life, with my mum since I was one, and they were always about big portions but always home cooked, always loads of veg, very hearty food – food you want to eat! I watched them since I was one making food, they put all their heart and soul into cooking for me and my brother.”

The mum-of-one has also been “obsessed” with cooking in an air fryer since the craze started, and it helps her prepare food easily for her toddler, Sophia. “If you want to save money, don’t use your oven, use your air

fryer” – they use a lot less energy to run. “I can literally stick in everything in the air fryer, and it will cook within 20 minutes. And that’s it, all sorted!”

So her third cookbook, Healthy Air Fryer Feasts, promises easy, high-protein recipes in 30 minutes or less, including a fast-food inspired crispy chicken sandwich with homemade baconnaise, cheeseburger burritos and ‘the best’ sweet potato fries. As well as Jack Daniel’s sesame chicken strips, inspired by a dish from TGI Fridays.

“The glaze is exceptional, but it’s so high in calories, so I’ve made it lower. I’ve made the chicken so it’s not deep-fried, it’s air fried, so it’s crispy still, and it tastes identical.”Here’s Kynigos’s advice for getting the best out of your air fryer.

Start basic

If you’re new to air frying or get the kitchen gadget for Christmas, Kynigos’s advice is to start simple. “Stick to really easy recipes, go for your standard chips, or even roast [potatoes]. Stick with the basics first and get to know your air fryer,” she says. “Cook a chicken breast in the air fryer when you first start out, getting used to how air fryers work, how long things take, how to keep the chicken moist…”

The recipes in her book are designed for standard air fryer mode, “so that you get to grip with the basics first. Once you’ve nailed that down, you can venture out.”

And check your food while it’s cooking.

“If a recipe says, ‘cook the chicken for 20 minutes on 180’ check it halfway, or check it a third of the way, and just to see how your air frying is cooking it,” she says, while you get to know your device.

Make your own oil spray

“Get a really good oil sprayer. I’ve got a standard glass bottle, and you spray anything that you want to make crispy –chips, chicken, if it [needs] a crispy coating, spray it. And you’ve already saved loads of calories because you’re just lightly spraying it, rather than deep path frying it, or using loads of oil in a pan.”

ABOVE & RIGHT
Christina Kynigos | Ellis Parrinder/PA

Hardly any oil is needed for air frying, she notes. “Be mindful with the oil, just spray it a little bit.” And some recipes don’t require any whatsoever.

Increase the protein

Kynignos isn’t a fan of scrimping on portion sizes. “I’m making the portions bigger because you’re adding in more vegetables and more protein. You can have quite a bit of protein and it’s so filling. As long as you balance the protein with the carbs and veg, you will be full. If you don’t have enough protein you’re going to be starving. High protein is so key, when you want to lose weight, you stay sustained until your next meal.”

Don’t cut out carbs

“Carbs are life,” she says. “I did keto [a lowcarb diet] years ago. I cut out carbs for two or three months, and I was the skinniest I’ve

ever been, and I was the most depressed I’ve ever been because I couldn’t eat carbs. I had to stop.

“It’s just a fad diet. I don’t advocate anything like where you have to cut out all of your favourite things, because it’s not sustainable and it’s not long-term. If anyone wants to cut out their favourite things, what’s the point in living? Do you know what mean?”

For pasta for example, just replace some of the carbs with protein, loads of vegetables and a gorgeous sauce, she suggests.

Try lower fat versions

“I love my cheese, I love my carbs, why restrict yourself when you can just limit the amount or use different variations of cheese?” says Kynignos. “A lot my recipes,

you use loads of cheese, and I just use reduced fat, or reduced-fat crème fraîche, single cream. You can still use it, but just less of it, so you’ve still got that gorgeous, rich, fatty taste from single cream to make the recipe taste amazing, but because you’re using less of it, it’s your hundreds of calories less.

“You can still eat all the foods you love with some little tweaks along the way.”

Keep it clean

“If you’re using really sticky batter, line the air fryer,” she says. “There are so many different liners you can get for air fryer so it doesn’t stick, that you can just stick in the dishwasher [afterwards]. And it’s annoying to clean an air fryer if it’s already really bad or continuously clean it!”

How to make quick healthy food in an air fryer you actually want to eat | HQ, HarperCollins Publishers/PA

Healthy Air Fryer Feasts: Fast, Easy, HighProtein Recipes in 30 Mins or Less by Christina Kynigos is published by HQ HarperCollins, priced £20. Photography by Ellis Parrinder. Available now.

INGREDIENTS

Non-stick cooking spray

1 onion, finely diced

6 chestnut mushrooms, finely diced

500g lean beef mince

2 beef stock cubes, dissolved in 250ml boiling water

500g passata

1 heaped tsp dried mixed herbs

Pinch of garlic granules

1tsp ground black pepper

Pinch of sweetener (or sugar)

8 mini tortilla wraps

200g grated light mozzarella

For the garlic butter:

30g light butter, melted

Pinch of dried parsley

½tsp garlic granules

INGREDIENTS

40g 0% fat Greek yogurt

40g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting

2tsp light butter, melted ½tsp ground cinnamon

1tsp granulated sweetener (or sugar)

For the cream cheese icing:

25g light cream cheese

1tsp icing sugar

Garlic butter bolognese crispy taco

SERVES 4, PREP 5 MINUTES, COOK 23-25 MINUTES

“My most viral recipe, levelled up,” says Christina Kynigos.

“Tacos filled with bolognese sauce and lashings of cheese, then brushed with garlic butter and air-fried until crispy. A firm family favourite. You can freeze the bolognese, but the tacos are best eaten fresh.”

1. Mix the garlic butter ingredients together in a small bowl and set aside.

2. Spray a pan with some oil spray, place over a low to medium heat, add the onion and mushrooms and fry for a few minutes to soften, then add the beef mince and fry for a further 3-4 minutes, stirring to brown it all over and break up any clumps.

3. Add the rest of the ingredients apart from the tortilla wraps and mozzarella, mix well and simmer for 8-10 minutes or until the liquid has evaporated.

4. Let the Bolognese cool slightly before using it to fill the tortillas. Add the mozzarella, fold over, then brush with the garlic butter and air-fry at 200°C for 3-4 minutes.

5. Flip them over and air-fry for a further 3-4 minutes, until golden and crispy.

Cinnamon buns

SERVES 1, PREP 5 MINUTES, COOK 8 MINUTES

“You just can’t beat fluffy cinnamon buns with a cream cheese icing, so I’ve made a highprotein version using my trusty two-ingredient dough,” says Christina Kynigos

1. In a bowl, mix the yogurt and flour together to form a dough. Flour the work surface and using a rolling pin, roll it out into a rectangle, around the thickness of a pound coin.

2. Brush over the melted butter, then evenly sprinkle over the cinnamon and sweetener. Roll up the dough into a log, then slice in half.

3. With the sliced side facing up, use your hand to gently press down and flatten each piece slightly. Using the brush you used earlier for the butter, brush any remaining butter around a small baking dish, then place the cinnamon buns inside.

4. Air-fry at 170°C for 8 minutes until golden and cooked, then let them cool for a few minutes.

5. Mix the icing ingredients together in a small bowl. Spread the cream cheese icing over the buns and devour.

Peanut tofu fingers with a zingy slaw

SERVES 2, PREP 5 MINUTES, COOK 8-10 MINUTES

INGREDIENTS

280g extra-firm tofu

25g cornflakes, crushed

10g salted peanuts, crushed

1tsp curry powder

20g peanut butter (crunchy or smooth)

2½tbsp hot water

1tsp dark soy sauce

1tsp granulated or powdered sweetener (or sugar)

Non-stick cooking spray

Salt and pepper, to taste

For the zingy slaw:

100g red cabbage, finely sliced

30g red onion, finely sliced

1 large sprig of coriander, finely chopped

3tbsp light mayo

1tsp white vinegar (or white rice vinegar)

Juice of ½ lime

This comforting vegan dish by Christina Kynigos is super-quick to whip up. “Strips of tofu coated in a satay-style batter, dipped into a crunchy peanut and cornflake crumb for the ultimate crunch, then served with a zingy slaw to cut through the saltiness and bring the dish to life,” says Christina Kynigos

1. Preheat the air fryer at 200°C for 5 minutes.

2. Slice the tofu into 6 blocks and set aside. In a bowl, mix the crushed cornflakes and peanuts with the curry powder and some salt and pepper. In another bowl, combine the peanut butter with the hot water until creamy, then mix in the soy sauce and sweetener.

3. Dip the tofu blocks into the peanut sauce, then into the crushed cornflakes, saving any leftover peanut sauce for later. Spray the air fryer base with oil and place the tofu fingers in it. Air fry at 180°C for 8–10 minutes, until golden and crispy.

4. Meanwhile, mix all the ingredients for the zingy slaw together, adding a good pinch of salt. Serve with the tofu fingers, with any remaining sauce for dunking.

Set sail for 2025: Exploring unforgettable experiences with Dorset Cruises

We continue our chat with Jon Morgan from Dorset Cruises, delving into the unique and captivating experiences this historic operation offers to guests seeking a memorable adventure on the water.

Are there any special events or themed cruises that guests can look forward to in the coming year? Any new experiences you’re introducing?

2025 events include Afternoon High Tea, Gin & Jazz, Sunday Brunch, Sunset Party Cruise, Wareham River, Dorset Vineyard Cruise, Champagne & Oysters, Gin Tasting Cruises and much more.

A new event for 2025 is the Brownsea Music Night, held on Brownsea Island during summer holidays.

What would a typical day or evening on one of your cruises look like? Can guests expect refreshments, music, or other entertainment on board?

A private charter aboard Dorset Queen allows the guest to create their own unique event, with the assistance of our party planners. Pimms on arrival, catering options such as onboard BBQ, Canapés, Thai Tapas, Buffets, fully licensed bar on board and a multi deck sound system.

We can also source entertainment to join us on board such as singers, magicians, bands and even a casino option available.

The scenery and atmosphere look so beautiful! Could you tell us about some of the scenic highlights guests can expect to see during your cruises?

All of our cruises take in the many sights of Poole Harbour including, the five islands, Brownsea Castle, Sandbanks and the local marinas. Unless we have strong winds on the day, we can also venture outside the harbour to view Old Harry’s Rock, the Jurassic Coast, Bournemouth Pier and even the Isle of Wight.

Finally, if someone hasn’t experienced Dorset Cruises yet, what would you say to encourage them to give it a try? Why should Dorset Cruises be on everyone’s must-do list for 2025?

Dorset Cruises gives guests a unique way to take in the beauty of Poole Harbour whist enjoying fine foods and drinks, all in the comfort of the only National Historic Ship still operating in Dorset.

Whether you’re planning a special occasion, searching for the perfect gift, or simply looking to enjoy a new experience in the year ahead, Dorset Cruises offers something truly unforgettable. To book your cruise or find out more about what’s on offer for 2025, visit their website or get in
