A MAGICAL MERMAID MAKEOVER BY THE CHILDREN FROM JULIA’S HOUSE

Children supported by Julia’s House children’s hospice had a colourful and messy half term week, as they helped artist, Hannah Dosanjh, to create a very special mermaid tail sculpture for The Great Tail Trail, which opens to the public across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) next spring.

Hannah, a Wiltshire-based artist, illustrator and muralist, recently worked with the Julia’s House hospice in Devizes to create a colourful balloon dog sculpture for The Big Dog Art Trail in Swindon during 2023.

“We were delighted to welcome Hannah back to help the children create ‘Sandy’, a vibrant patchwork mermaid tail in icecream colours,” explains Natalie Sheehy, Lead Nurse for the Dorset hospice. “Each patch will features a handprint or drawing by a Julia’s House child, sibling or a member of staff. It was really important to us to involve the children in the creation of their own mermaid tail, and we can’t wait to see Sandy take its place on the trail when it opens on 5 April.”

JULIA’S HOUSE www.juliashouse.org

After visiting the hospice Sandy, who is kindly sponsored by sealing technology manufacturer, Superior, was a special guest at the Julia’s House Sibling Ball, where brothers and sisters of Julia’s House children were also able to add their own artwork to the patchwork tail.

“I’ve really enjoyed working with the children and Julia’s House staff, it’s been so much fun! The children have discovered lots of different ways of printing with their hands and feet, “ explains Hannah. “What’s really stood out for me is the enjoyment everyone’s had and I’m really looking forward to seeing the reaction the tail gets from the public when The Great Tail Trail opens.

“I came up with the design for Sandy by imagining lots of squares stitched together like a patchwork, so the children could each paint a square of their own. The colours I chose reflect Dorset because they are all seaside, ice cream colours - and everyone loves ice cream!”

LEWIS-MANNING HOSPICE CARE

CHRISTMAS TREE COLLECTION & RECYCLING CAMPAIGN

Lewis-Manning Hospice Care is kicking off the new year with its annual Christmas Tree Collection & Recycling Campaign, taking place on 9th, 10th, and 11th January 2025 across postcodes BH1–BH23. By recycling your Christmas trees, you and local people in your community can make a truly meaningful impact, helping local hospice patients whilst promoting sustainability and supporting the environment.

If you are planning to have a real Christmas Tree this year Lewis-Manning invites you to join them in this recycling campaign and register and donate online today at www.lewis-manning.org.uk/trees, where a suggested donation of £15 will allow the hospice to deliver a virtual exercise and well-being session run by one of the hospice Occupational Therapists. This vital service helps the growing community of housebound patients achieve a more active, fulfilling life and remain connected to each other.

Head of Fundraising, Vicki Gray advised, “Our Christmas tree recycling initiative is so much more than raising funds for an important local hospice - It’s an opportunity for the community to support crucial wellbeing services for Dorset hospice patients, whilst championing the environment.”

HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS

SCOOP GARDEN GOLD PRIZE FOR SECOND YEAR RUNNING

Forest Holme Hospice was delighted to scoop the top Gold prize in the Loving Care Homes category at the recent Poole in Bloom awards for the second year running.

Poole In Bloom has now been running for several years, with its main event being the awards ceremony held annually at Compton Acres, and this year Forest Holme Hospice’s four volunteer gardeners, David, Viv, Petula and Simon, were once again presented with a plaque and certificate in recognition of their hard work in maintaining the hospice gardens all year round.

Heidi Haagensen, Volunteer Manager at Forest Holme Hospice Charity, said, “We are all so thrilled and proud to be presented with this award for the second year in a row. It’s testament to the amazing work of our volunteer gardeners who look after all our garden spaces, come rain or shine, and help create a beautiful tranquil sanctuary which plays a unique and important role in patient care, staff wellbeing and our environmental impact.”

SLEEPING BEAUTY YOUR DREAM PANTOMIME

One of British television’s best-known faces, Todd Carty can’t wait to meet Poole audiences when he plays King Tucker in Sleeping Beauty, this year’s traditional family pantomime at Lighthouse.

A regular on our screens since the 1970s, it’s no wonder he’s stopped in his tracks as he poses for photos in the foyer at Lighthouse. He’s wearing full regal robes, crown and all, but to those who approach him for a selfie and a quick chat he’s still Tucker Jenkins from Grange Hill and its spin-off Tucker’s Luck, or Mark Fowler from EastEnders, or PC Gabriel Kent from The Bill.

Todd is no stranger to pantomime, although his touring commitments in The Mousetrap have kept him busy over the last couple of

LIGHTHOUSE, POOLE www.lighthousepoole.co.uk

years, and he jumped at the chance to join the cast of Sleeping Beauty. The latest in a run of award-winning in-house productions at Lighthouse, once again it’s written and directed by Chris Jarvis, who also plays the Dame, with production designer James Smith, choreographer Daniel Donaldson Todd and musical director Adam Tuffrey.

“Sleeping Beauty is a new one for me. I have played a king before in Jack and the Beanstalk, although this might be a different type of king – we’ll have to see what comes out in the wash.

“What I love about panto is that it’s open to all ages. I remember seeing my first panto, I was maybe four years old, and loving the lights and the spectacle, all the songs; you can just let yourself go, whether you’re four or 104.”

Sleeping Beauty opens on Thursday 12 December and runs until Sunday 5 January. Tickets available now at https://www. lighthousepoole.co.uk/event/sleepingbeauty/ or on 01202 280000.

ELVES ON THE LOOSE AT MARWELL ZOO

The countdown to Glow Marwell is on and a merry troupe of mischievous elves have been wreaking havoc across the park as the zoo team sets the stage for this year’s magical light event.

From taking the reins in the Chief Executive’s office to leaving their mark on animal habitat windows and gift-wrapping statues, the naughty elves have been keeping everyone at the park on their toes.

Laura Read, Chief Executive of Marwell Wildlife, said: “Everyone tells you not to work with animals and children, but nobody warns you about the elves!

“We’re delighted to be hosting Father Christmas and his elves over the festive period and their cheeky antics have brought endless laughter and festive spirit around the park.

“Our events team have been working hard to get everything ready for what we’re sure is going to be a great family event and the elves are a huge part of the magic. We can’t wait to show everyone what we’ve been working towards when the event goes live at the end of November, and we hope as many people as possible will come to experience Glow Marwell 2024.”

MARWELL ZOO www.marwell.org.uk

Glow Marwell, the zoo’s festive light event, runs from Friday 29 November to Monday 30 December with a free zoo visit from 1pm

This year’s event will also feature UV facepainting, an immersive VR headset experience, new sky and sea zones and tasty festive food offerings, including illuminated candyfloss and giant Yorkshire puddings stuffed with turkey and all the trimmings.

Father Christmas will be taking up residence in Marwell Hall and guests will be able to pay a visit to his grotto inside grade 1 listed Marwell Hall on selected dates. Tickets need to be purchased separately for Father Christmas and they are selling fast, so please check availability on Marwell’s website.

Nicky Cole, Senior Events Manager, said: “It’s great to be welcoming Father Christmas and his elves back to Marwell Hall and I know the elves are excited to be here too. I’ve had to apologise to the keepers a couple of times after elves have offered to help but caused more mess than they’ve cleared up, but we know it’s just their playful nature.

“As well as the chaos, the elves bring bundles of festive cheer, and we’re thrilled they’re here to help deliver the magic.”

TOP MUSIC AWARD NOMINATION FOR LIGHTHOUSE TECHNICIANS

Lighthouse technicians are delighted to have been nominated in the Original Music Awards. Since the monthly original grass roots music night Live and Unheard was launched in 2019, Lighthouse technicians have provided full support to the featured artists, enabling all to perform in a professional setting, often for the first time.

Run in partnership with Hangover Hill, Live and Unheard showcases emerging and established original music artists – many of them from the South West – that fly for the flag for new music without the aid of record company support.

The gigs are staged in the Sherling Studio with the same lighting and sound rigs used by professional touring artists and all bands are paid regardless of how many supporters they bring with them. The monthly gigs provide invaluable experience for bands and have seen some of them go on to play much larger stages supporting established acts. Including singer songwriter Jake Bugg at Lighthouse.

On Friday 17 January, Lighthouse hosts the Original Music Awards, a red carpet event for original grass roots music artists, performers, promoters, venues and devotees.

Trethowans, a leading law firm with offices across the central South of England, has once again been recognised as one of The Times Best Law Firms – the newspaper’s prestigious annual list of the top 250 legal practices in England and Wales.

Compiled by the international market research company Statista, the 2025 list is based on thousands of recommendations from solicitors, who vote for the lawyers and firms they hold in the highest regard. The votes cover a wide range of categories, including business, public, and private client services. Print isn’t dead: Why paper beats pixels every time

We chat with our own Ross Stallion, Director of House & Lifestyle magazine about the power of local print advertising.

House & Lifestyle magazine has been a trusted name in local media for years, and behind its success is the expertise of Ross Stallion. We sat down with him to explore the benefits of print advertising and understand why it stands out in a digitaldominated world.

Ross, in an era where digital advertising is everywhere, why do you believe print advertising is still effective?

Great question! Print advertising, especially in a trusted local magazine like House & Lifestyle, is powerful because it has a tangible presence. When people hold a magazine in their hands, they engage with it

on a personal level. Unlike digital ads, which can feel fleeting, print ads linger and leave a lasting impression. Readers tend to trust and value the content in a reputable print magazine more than what they see online, where ads are often seen as intrusive.

You mentioned trust. Can you tell us more about how trust plays a role in print advertising?

Trust is everything in advertising. Studies show that people inherently trust print media more than digital because it feels more authentic and curated. Our readers pick up House & Lifestyle knowing they’re going to see quality, credible content, including ads. When a business advertises with us, it gains a sense of credibility by association, which can be crucial in convincing local customers to engage with the brand.

What makes House & Lifestyle magazine unique in the world of local print media?

House & Lifestyle stands out because we’re more than just a magazine; we’re part of the community. We feature local businesses, artisans, designers, and home improvement professionals who resonate with our audience. Every edition is carefully curated to reflect the unique lifestyle of our readers, making it the perfect platform for local businesses to reach people who value quality, style, and a sense of home.

Some say that digital advertising provides more data and analytics. How does print advertising provide value in comparison?

While digital offers click-through rates and views, print provides something equally valuable: presence and recall. Readers of House & Lifestyle spend time with our

magazine. Our ads aren’t just glanced over; they’re seen repeatedly and in a trusted context. We offer longevity and impact, which data alone can’t capture. Plus, we often hear from our advertisers about the direct business they get from people who saw their ad in our magazine—proof that print leads to real results.

Can you explain how House & Lifestyle can actually help businesses close sales?

Absolutely. We provide a high-quality, locally-focused platform that helps businesses build credibility and trust, which are crucial for sales. Imagine a local reader considering a renovation—they see a trusted local contractor’s ad in House & Lifestyle. That ad can be the nudge they need to reach out and start a conversation. For many readers, seeing a business in our magazine legitimises it and makes them more comfortable moving forward with a purchase or partnership.

How does print advertising help businesses build long-term brand trust?

Print advertising creates an enduring brand image. When businesses consistently appear in House & Lifestyle, they become a familiar name that people recognise and trust. Over time, our readers start to see these brands as part of the community, which builds long-term loyalty.

Being in print isn’t just about visibility; it’s about becoming a trusted voice that readers know will be there edition after edition.

What would you say to business owners who feel like online ads are cheaper and “get the job done” faster?

Online ads may be quick, but they’re often temporary. Print is an investment in brandbuilding. When you advertise with us, you’re aligning your brand with a publication that readers trust and spend time with. A single print ad can continue to resonate with a reader for weeks, even months. Plus, it’s an environment without the noise of online distractions. In many ways, the slower, more thoughtful impact of print can be more valuable than the immediate impressions of digital ads.

How do you ensure that ads in House & Lifestyle are of high quality and relevant to the audience?

We’re very selective about the brands and businesses we feature. Our magazine has a specific focus on home, lifestyle, and local quality, so we ensure our ads are in line with this ethos. Each ad is crafted to reflect the aesthetic and standard that our readers expect, which means it has a greater chance of resonating. We also work closely with advertisers to create content that feels cohesive with the magazine.

What kind of businesses do you think benefit the most from advertising in House & Lifestyle?

Our readers are homeowners, renovators, and people who love to invest in their living spaces and community. Businesses that cater to home improvement, interior design, local dining, and lifestyle services see great results with us. Our audience loves discovering quality local businesses they can trust. If you’re a brand that wants to be part of a customer’s journey to build their perfect home, our magazine is the perfect fit.

For a business considering its next advertising move, why should they choose House & Lifestyle magazine?

Choosing House & Lifestyle means choosing a trusted, respected local platform that brings genuine results. We offer businesses a chance to connect deeply with their ideal customers, who are ready to engage and invest in quality. Print advertising with us isn’t just about one ad; it’s about becoming part of our readers’

Kev Orkian on Christmas, Comedy, and the Magic of Panto

Quickfire questions with Kev Orkian for Jack and the Beanstalk

What does pantomime mean to you?

Pantomime is a theatre art form that I have loved from when I was a child. The most important genre of entertainment for all children and their first experience in live theatre. It brings together every style of immersive and interactive theatre under one production.

What are you going to be doing on Christmas day this year?

This Christmas, I am spending the day with my family at home with my 11 year olds, Watching a Bruce Willis special and eating a full roast with all the trimmings…

You performed in Southampton in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs last year alongside Ashley Banjo and Diversity, how do you feel to be returning once again this year?

For me, it’s like seeing my family again. The Banjo’s and Diversity are awesome human beings, and so talented…Working with them allows me to expand my opportunities and delve into new comedic ideas, that bring hilarity to all our routines…

What is your favourite Christmas tradition?

Traditionally my fav Christmas tradition is watching my kids opening their presents and watching them tick off the Christmas list….

Do you think this year is the year that Ashley Banjo lets you join Diversity? Ashley has no choice….I have been practicing all year for this…I am DIVERSITY!!!

What would you say to our audiences who are thinking about booking tickets to this year’s pantomime?

Don’t think of booking? Just book!!! If you wait any longer, you’ll miss out as tickets are selling incredibly fast…

Outside, you’ll find a pop-up sweetshop, and family activities. Tiny tots can spot hidden elves and there are fun, festive games for older kids to enjoy. Our Christmas sleigh scene in front of the house creates the perfect backdrop for family photos.

Keen to go green? Good Energy can help

Sustainability is at the forefront of people’s minds, and how you heat your home can make a big difference to your own carbon footprint.

Good Energy has been helping households to enjoy a greener life for almost a quarter of a century, originally supplying 100 per cent renewable electricity to homes and businesses but recently expanding into the installation of domestic heat pumps and solar panels too.

We source our power from a UK network of more than 2,000 renewable generators including solar farms, wind turbines and hydroelectric projects.

Last year they exported a huge amount of clean energy to the grid - enough to power almost 230,000 average houses for a whole year and preventing the emission of almost 120,000 tonnes of carbon.

One of the best ways for households to cut their carbon emissions and cut costs is to switch to a heat pump. Grants of £7,500 are available, and there are proposals for them to be the default option for all new homes by 2025.

However, a big challenge is the level of misinformation around their installation and operation. Good Energy commissioned Opinium to survey a sample of South East residents on a wide range of topics around sustainability and found 14 per cent wrongly believe a heat pump is louder than a fridge, ten per cent wrongly believe they only work in newer homes, and eight per cent wrongly believe they don’t work in the cold.

Good Energy is campaigning to combat these myths and show that heat pumps are not loud and can work well in older homes. What’s more, they’re four times as efficient as traditional gas boilers and provide consistent warmth throughout the day.

Most homes have traditionally been heated by oil or gas, but these polluting and expensive fossil fuels are exposed to the volatilities of the international energy markets.

Heat pumps use electricity instead –which is increasingly sourced from UK renewable sources – and are therefore the perfect alternative, particularly for off-grid properties with oil or LPG tanks.

Good Energy offers bespoke systems designed around your home, covering new-builds, retrofits and period properties, supported by 10-year warranties and remote monitoring capabilities for longterm reassurance.

Check out the ‘Green home stories’ on our website - featuring customers who have already saved money on their bills –and our ‘ten myths about air source heat pumps busted’.

You’ll also find our ‘Meet the Generators’ series of films which throw the spotlight on our partners across the country who are providing us with truly renewable energy.

We can support your journey towards a cleaner and greener future.

Tasteful Christmas décor tips for Scandistyle schemes

Sometimes less is more, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

With everyone gearing up for the holiday season and festive window displays being unveiled, ’tis the time when style choices are in the balance.

And with the trend for making a subtle statement, organic décor and natural textures, we’re decking the halls with a mix of chic simplicity, smidgen of twinkly and smattering of sumptuous elegance…

“The Scandinavian Christmas aesthetic is usually quite minimalist, neutral, nature focused, yet cosy,” highlights luxury interior designer, Tommy Kebbson of Kebbson & Co.

Scandi Christmas Living Room Decorations, Laura James | Laura James/PA

“Many people love opting for Scandi style as it’s a lot more neutral toned and can therefore fit with your home’s overall aesthetic, rather than bright colours that may clash,” says Kebbson.

“Scandinavian Christmas décor usually centres around neutral colours with an emphasis on nature and natural materials.”

The designer recommends using as many natural elements as possible in your scheme such as branches, pinecones, holly, twigs, berries and leaves which can be used to create homemade decorations.

Focus on cosy neutrals, says Kebbson, and suggests sticking to warm lighting throughout your home to create a comfortable, homely atmosphere. Adding plush textures such as fluffy rugs and blankets also creates a cosy atmosphere, another Scandi principle.

“Keeping your tree décor very simplistic, minimal and neutral is key… no bright, mismatched tinsel!” underlines Kebbson. As he points out, wooden elements are really popular. Think wooden Advent calendars, for example, which seamlessly blend with the natural elements.

“I personally love paring back the maximalism aesthetic,” notes Kebbson. “A tree adorned in solely warm white lights is a stunning statement, but don’t forget to add your own personality into the mix.

He continues: “Perhaps sift through your decoration collection and choose a single colour scheme and stick with it, to make it your own aesthetic.”

Suzi Samaddar, room styling expert at Furn says: “When it comes to a Scandi-inspired Christmas tree, less is more. Steer away from nostalgic or novelty items such as tinsel or anything too bright and sparkly.

“Instead, be selective with your baubles and decorations – stick to décor neutral in design, either off-white or light wooden items. Embracing a neutral colour scheme throughout your home will ensure a harmonious and cohesive feel this festive season.”

If you have a mantelpiece, Samaddar says a thin faux-fur runner would be an ideal option. “Dotting some natureinspired accents on top such as pine cones… the goal is to keep it understated and clutter-free, so resist the urge to go overboard.”

When it comes to themed schemes, she says to opt for delicate motifs like snowflakes to capture the ‘bring the outside in’ essence of Scandinavian design.

To create those cosy Scandi layers, the stylist suggests incorporating knitted throws and faux fur cushions for added texture. “You can even layer up textures to set up a cosy corner with various styled throws. “Perfect for unwrapping presents or relaxing with a glass of mulled wine.”

As far as lighting goes, Samaddar suggests illuminating your space with candles. “Choose festive candle holders in designs like antlers or tree branches.

“Tea lights are also wonderful for enhancing the ambience, especially on your dining or kitchen table. Traditional decorations, such as angels, stars and Christmas textiles are ideal for achieving a Scandi aesthetic.”

She says you can also introduce subtle hints of Christmas into your home through bedding and cushions. “Styles don’t need to be overtly festive, a soft nod to the season is enough – consider tufted designs to create a snug and inviting feel.”

Hot boozy cocktails to cosy up with to lift your spirits

These luxe libations will put you in high spirits, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

When it comes to winter warmers, is there anything more comforting than a well-spiked hot drink crowned with cream?

Making it both toothsome and fused with flavour – and this is where Larousse Cocktails comes in…

Cited as the definitive guide to timeless and classic cocktails by the world-renowned French cookery brand, the mixology experts at Larousse have created a tome on the art of mixology, with more than 200 recipes featuring rum, gin, tequila, vodka, champagne, cognac, whiskey and more.

We’ve delved inside and plucked three tasty recipes for the home bartender to rustle up as the nights draw in…

SPICY TEQUILA COFFEE

“Tequila, is uniquely distinctive because of the flavour derived from its raw material, blue agave,” highlights an excerpt from Larousse Cocktails. “Classic tequila cocktails have always been popular in the USA, due to the country’s geographic proximity to Mexico.

“Today, tequila is hugely popular in Europe, bringing success to many bars and delighting the taste buds of more and more drinkers tempted by this Mexican spirit.”

INGREDIENTS (MAKES 4)

60ml tequila, 200ml whipping or double cream, 2g red chilli, 200ml sugar cane syrup, 120ml hot black coffee. 4 bird’s-eye chillies to garnish.

METHOD

Mix the cream and chilli together, then whip in a siphon, or in a bowl using a stand mixer or a hand-held mixer with a whisk attachment, until just holding its shape. Keep chilled.

Mix the sugar cane syrup and tequila together then heat. Divide between four tall heatproof glasses. Incline each cup and carefully pour the hot coffee on top. Remove the piece of chilli from the whipped cream, then spoon just enough on top of each drink to make three distinct layers. Decorate with a small chilli and serve at once.

IRISH COFFEE

“Whisky will bring spicy, woody and even sour notes to a cocktail,” say the writers at Larousse. “This aromatic richness is particularly interesting as it allows you to create cocktails using very few ingredients or, conversely, to increase the number of ingredients without altering the spirit’s very powerful flavour.”

INGREDIENTS (MAKES 1)

40ml Irish whiskey, 15ml sugar cane syrup, 40ml hot black coffee, 30ml whipping cream, whipped.

METHOD

Heat the sugar cane syrup and Irish whiskey together and pour this hot mixture into a heatproof glass with a handle. Tilt the glass and carefully pour the coffee down the side of the glass so as to keep the layers of whiskey and coffee clearly separate.

Stand the glass upright again and, using a bar spoon, very gently spoon a layer of whipped cream on top of the coffee to create three distinctly separate layers. ABOVE

VODKA TABERNACLE

“Long considered a simple spirit made from potatoes in Eastern European countries, vodka’s image has been enhanced over recent decades by an impressive input of expertise and diversity,” underline the experts at Larousse. “Today there are between 4,000 and 5,000 brands of vodka on the market, offering bartenders around the world an almost unlimited playing field.”

INGREDIENTS (MAKES 1)

30ml vodka, 120ml whipping or double cream, 80ml vervain (lemon verbena) herbal tea, 20ml maple syrup, caramel sauce.

METHOD

Whip the cream until thick in a siphon, or in a bowl using a stand mixer or a hand-held mixer with a whisk attachment. Keep the cream chilled in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Prepare the infused verbena tea, pour it into a glass and add the maple syrup and vodka. Fill the glass with the whipped cream and carefully pipe or spoon the caramel sauce on top.

How to scent your home for Christmas

‘Tis the time to seduce the senses, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

Making your home smell Christmassy is like choosing your favourite perfume… not only can it elevate your mood, but there’s a certain style depending on the interplay of scented notes and feel of the space.

“Fragrance can be a very powerful tool all-year round, but it’s especially important at Christmas when you’re transforming the home into a rich and sophisticated festive haven that transcends the everyday,” says Jennifer Genson, WoodWick R&D director of fragrance & sensory science at Newell Brands.

“Part of the magic of Christmas is that it means something different to everyone and gives you the chance to experiment with bold and unusual fragrances that reflect your unique personal style – and evoke what the holidays mean to you.”

When thinking about scent-scaping for the festive season, Genson recommends starting with the kitchen and living room as these are the focal points of the home.

She suggests a scented candle which pays homage to classic seasonal notes with woody, incense-like aromas, alongside notes of tobacco leaves, amber and vanilla powder if you’re looking for something a little out of the ordinary.

Moreover, Mark Winstanley, chief creative officer for The White Company says you can’t beat spicy smells for Christmas which make a room feel warm and cosy. “Scents such as sweet orange, clove, vanilla, cedarwood, sandalwood, cassis, fig and pomegranate all help us to feel more relaxed and at home when the days have turned darker.”

A large candle in a signature wintry scent makes the perfect welcome in the hallway, suggests Winstanley, who finds a diffuser or great-looking bowl of potpourri in the living room offers the perfect ‘light’ scenting for day.

When night falls, he says to up the scent levels with a scented candle or two, and a quick spritz of room spray is the perfect boost – for that seasonal finishing touch, you can even spritz your faux fir tree with the fresh scent of pine, adds Winstanley.

Indeed, scent-scaping and ritual of lighting these flickering flames have become so popular, the huge choice of candles out there reflects the sensory experience they gift us.

As Natalie Schober, founder of Atelier Noitē puts it: “The scent of freshly baked Christmas cookies, the woody notes of a freshly cut Christmas tree, the aroma of table tops and mantelpieces adorned with winter fruits and berries – the scents of Christmas are as evocative as they are inviting.”

If you’re entertaining guests over the festive season, she suggests the fresh, dewy notes of iris, lily, white rose and jasmine work well to sharpen the senses before you sit down for dinner.

“Later in the evening, the balmy notes of amber combined with the purity of precious woods, ylang ylang, and orange peel will create the perfect atmosphere for special moments spent with your loved ones,” opines Schober.

BELOW

The White Company Clementine & Juniper Large Candle, with notes of orange peel, pink pepper and juniper, £65, The White Company | The White Company/PA

After dinner, she believes a candle with the alluring scent of datura flowers: “With their warm, seductive notes of storied night blooms paired with soft amber, is a tempting invitation to stay for an after-dinner drink over meaningful conversations.”

Lastly, when you’re winding down for a restful night, Schober suggests scented top notes of cassis with a base of cedar…

“The rich blend of black cassis, fig leaves and raspberry notes, enveloped in a warm woody base, will help you relax and unwind from the last minute stresses of preparing for Christmas Day!”

Or for something more subtle yet equally opulent, Genson favours a blend of fig and bergamot: “A great choice to light in the bathroom when enjoying a hot bath during those cold winter evenings.

“Combined with rich aromas of amber sands, vetiver and guaiac wood offering a luxurious sensorial experience that pushes the boundaries of a ‘traditional’ Christmas, whilst capturing the essence of the season.”

Chatting with James Griffiths

We’re chatting with James Griffiths, Director at Portman Stone, a company renowned for its exquisite stone worktops and surfaces.

To kick things off, can you tell us how Portman Stone got started? What inspired the creation of the company, and what was the vision in those early days?

Portman Stone’s story began not in kitchen worktops but in limestone and marble fireplace production. Originally a fireplace factory, the company specialised in crafting elegant, high-quality pieces for homes. However, as trends shifted and demand for fireplaces naturally declined, we saw an opportunity to adapt.

With the right machinery already in place and a passion for working with stone, we transitioned into creating bespoke stone worktops. This pivot allowed us to leverage our craftsmanship and expertise in stone to meet the growing demand for kitchen worktops. Today, we’re proud to serve the

Dorset community and beyond, offering premium local worktops for kitchens, bathrooms, and more.

Portman Stone is known for beautiful stone countertops and surfaces – could you give us an overview of the main services you offer?

We specialise in bespoke stone fabrication and installation, offering a wide range of services including kitchen worktops, bathroom vanities, and bespoke surfaces such as custom table tops for residential and commercial spaces.

Our services cover every step of the process, from the initial phone call or visit to our showroom, to sourcing and installing your new stone surfaces, ensuring a seamless experience for all our customers.

What makes working with natural stone so special, and what are some of the unique qualities of the materials you work with at Portman Stone?

Natural stone is truly one of a kind; no two pieces are ever the same. Each slab has its own unique character, veining, and colour variations, making every project a personalised work of art. At Portman Stone, we pride ourselves on working with the finest quality stones, including granite, marble, and engineered stone.

Our Sergio Range, for example, has been meticulously curated over the years to ensure it meets the highest standards of quality. These engineered stones offer both beauty and durability while keeping up with modern design trends. We’re always ahead

of the curve, selecting colours and finishes that are in high demand to ensure our clients’ projects are as timeless as they are stylish.

What do you think really sets Portman Stone apart from other companies in the industry? What’s your unique edge?

Our commitment to quality and customer service is at the core of what we do. We offer a personalised service from start to finish, with all our work carried out in-house, ensuring that customers are supported at every step of their journey. Our expertise, combined with our focus on understanding our customer’ visions, sets us apart and ensures each installation is perfect for its space.

The process of choosing and installing stone surfaces can be quite personal.

How does Portman Stone guide clients through that journey to find exactly what they’re looking for?

We offer a personalised consultation process where we take time to understand our clients’ style preferences, functional needs, and budget. From there, we guide them through options, from selecting the perfect stone to choosing the ideal finish. Our team is always on hand to answer questions and provide advice, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience.

As you reflect on Portman Stone’s growth, what have been some key moments or turning points that have shaped the company’s path?

One key turning point was our investment in advanced CNC machinery, allowing us to improve precision and efficiency in our stone fabrication. Expanding our range of stones and finishes has also been instrumental in broadening our offerings. These moments, along with our growing client base, have solidified our reputation in the industry.

Looking ahead, what’s next for Portman Stone? Are there any exciting projects, expansions, or goals you’re particularly excited about in the coming years?

We’re incredibly excited about the arrival of our new CNC machine in January, along with other cutting-edge equipment that will enhance the quality of our work. This advanced technology will refine every stage of our process—from templating to cutting and installation—delivering exceptional results every time. Looking ahead, we’re eager to strengthen collaborations with designers and architects, embracing new opportunities to innovate and explore the possibilities of craftsmanship and design.

How is Portman Stone addressing sustainability concerns in the worktop industry, and what specific actions are they taking to reduce environmental impacts? We prioritise sustainability by bulk buying slabs directly from the source, cutting CO2 emissions from long-distance transport. By working with local kitchen companies, recycling water, minimising waste, and offering eco-friendly options like recycled glass worktops, we’re leading the way in creating a greener future for our industry and customers.

If you’re searching for stunning, high-quality worktops on the South Coast, paired with exceptional craftsmanship and outstanding customer service, look no further than Portman Stone. Whether you’re replacing kitchen worktops or managing a full renovation, their team is here to bring your vision to life. Working with both residential clients and trade professionals, they ensure every project is tailored to meet your specific needs, combining expertise with a seamless process to achieve outstanding results.

Continental Europe may lay claim to being the birthplace of the Christmas market, but judging by the variety of events planned for this year, there are plenty of great options closer to home.

Can you tell us a bit about the story behind Make Studio; how did it all begin, and what was the initial vision?

Make Studio began in 2008 with a simple goal: to create high-quality CGI visualisations and marketing materials for local developers, blending architectural design with compelling storytelling.

A turning point came when Garmin invited us to become their creative agency, broadening our scope from CGI to full-scale marketing campaigns. This partnership helped us evolve into a studio that specialises in innovative storytelling for brands.

In 2015, we expanded internationally responding to a growing demand for our architectural CGI expertise, particularly from Norway. This move led us to create Make Believe, a dedicated arm for architecture-focused projects, while Make

Studio continued innovating in branding and product marketing. This evolution allowed us to specialise and grow while staying true to our creative roots.

What kinds of design services does Make Believe offer, and are there any areas you’re particularly known for?

We focus on a core set of services that help our clients visualise their designs to the highest level of detail and quality. These include the following:

• Architectural Visualisation

• Interior Visualisation

• Commercial Visualisation

• Animation, Film, and Flythroughs

• 360° and Virtual Reality Tours

• Cinematics

• Photography and Drone Photography

• Post-Production

We are particularly renowned for our attention to detail, creating CGI visualisations with a level of realism that delivers a more photographic end result.

Can you share some standout projects or partnerships that have helped shape the studio’s journey?

Working with clients like Garmin was a gamechanger, opening doors to the commercial and product industries and expanding our portfolio beyond its original focus.

We’ve grown from being the go-to CGI agency for local developers and architects in Bournemouth and Poole to partnering with global brands like ABB, Swarovski, and Monsoon. These collaborations showcase our ability to adapt across industries, delivering top-tier CGI visualisations, product campaigns, and marketing strategies.

The trust we’ve built with these clients has cemented our reputation for creativity and innovation, making us a key player both locally and globally, while continuing to push boundaries.

What would you say really sets you apart in the design world? What’s the secret sauce that clients keep coming back for?

The CGI industry is tough, but we stand out by delivering top-quality visuals and building strong, lasting relationships.

As a small, dedicated team, we work closely with clients to understand their unique needs, ensuring tailored results that go above and beyond. Our mix of technical expertise and personal collaboration fosters trust, making clients feel confident and valued—that’s what sets us apart.

What’s the creative process like – how do you approach new projects and develop unique designs for each client?

Our creative process starts with understanding the client’s vision and goals to find the best approach. Through a clear, collaborative workflow, we ensure clients can review and refine concepts early, keeping everything aligned with

their expectations. This flexible approach helps us deliver a polished, impactful final product that truly brings their ideas to life.

Could you tell us a bit about the team behind Make Studio?

We often compare running our studio to running a successful restaurant—success depends on exceptional talent. Our team is highly skilled, passionate, and thrives on collaboration, continuous learning, and innovation.

By fostering an open, dynamic environment, we encourage each other’s creativity and elevate our work, consistently delivering outstanding results for our clients.

Make Studio’s portfolio spans various industries and project types. Are there any dream clients or industries you’d love to work with in the future?

We absolutely love working with new architects and developers, and right now, we’re creating visuals for the Middle East, which has been a fun challenge for our designers!. We’re also thrilled to be in talks with a top watch brand, exploring fresh opportunities.

Every project we take on is unique, with its own challenges and opportunities, and that’s what keeps us inspired. We’re always aiming to deliver amazing results for every client, no matter what industry they’re in!

What’s on the horizon for Make Studio?

Design drives everything we do, inspiring us to push creative boundaries. From stunning architectural projects to innovative products, we’ve embraced challenges that fuel our growth.

Recently, we’ve been diving deeper into the world of virtual reality (VR), a powerful tool for creating immersive, lifelike experiences, such as building flythroughs and product interactions. By advancing VR and simulation software, we’re unlocking new creative possibilities. We have a large corporate client, that deals with Water, Gas and Flow and we have some great projects up ahead with them.

How an air fryer can make Christmas dinner a breeze

Michelin-trained chef Poppy O’Toole runs down the best festive dishes you can make in an air fryer.

We’re all looking for ways to make Christmas dinner easier – and if you’ve got an air fryer, festive food could be a whole lot simpler.

Christmas dinner normally requires a lot of effort to pull together all the starters, turkey and side dishes, and chef Poppy O’Toole says she’ll “definitely” be using her air fryer to help everything come together.

Michelin-trained O’Toole, 29, is something of an early adopter of air fryers – she first fell in love with them in 2018, and says: “I was working in kitchens at the time, and I was like, I don’t know how chefs are going to feel about this. It might fade, but I was intrigued – and it’s got bigger and bigger.”

She adds: “It was so easy to get on board with because of how convenient they are. As a chef, I wasn’t at home a lot – so my partner could use it really easily without me having to be over his shoulder.”

They’ve got speed and energy efficiency going for them, O’Toole suggests, and she’s even dedicated her most recent cookbook to air fryer recipes.

Her air fryer will go into overdrive on Christmas day, “because I need all the space for everything”, the Worcestershirebased chef says, “I’m going to be feeding a lot of people”.

“There’s not enough space to do everything, but what it’s really good at is giving you the capability to do more stuff at the same time,” she notes.

“So you’re not just relying on the oven and the hob – you’ve also got this other piece of equipment, which is amazing at cooking things and it can be done quicker and more energy efficiently.”

Before diving in, there are a few mistakes O’Toole warns against making with your air fryer on December 25.

“Make sure you put a timer on. I’ve done that a few times, where I’ve gone, it comes out in 20 minutes or whatever and you go, ‘yeah, I’ll come back in a few minutes, it’ll be fine’. And I’ve left it in there the whole time and it’s burned to a crisp.”

The second thing to watch out for? “Don’t overcrowd,” she says.

“It can be very easy to throw it all in, it’ll be fine. But it doesn’t work that way – the whole point is that the air circulation gets around everything, so it needs a gap where that can happen.”

And if you’re looking to impress your guests with beautiful-looking food, O’Toole recommends keeping your air fryer clean.

“This is another thing that I do very regularly, and I think a lot of people do – I don’t wash it enough, I don’t clean it enough. I end up getting these little dark bits on the rest of my food, which is fine when you’re cooking for yourself – that doesn’t matter.

“But when you’re cooking for other people, if you’ve got family coming over, you want to make sure it’s the best. So make sure in between each thing you cook, you give it a little wipe down.”

Interested in using your air fryer this Christmas? This is what O’Toole recommends doing…

STARTERS

“I always like little nibbly bits on Christmas,” admits O’Toole – and these can be easily whipped up in the air fryer.

“It’s something a little bit different around lunchtime, because I have my Christmas dinner a bit late – I have it more as a dinner

DESSERT

While O’Toole doesn’t plan on making Christmas pudding in the air fryer this year, there are plenty of sweet treats you can do in there instead.

Her sister will be clamouring for a pecan and pretzel blondies recipe (or you can try any variation on brownies you like –even mince pies would work), and O’Toole adds: “Custard tarts – they’re so simple and something about doing them in the oven is always terrifying to me, but being able to put them in the air fryer for literally a few minutes is perfect.

“That’s definitely something I’ll be doing.”

around three, so around 12 you’re getting a bit peckish. So I do some lovely little nibbles – like crispy wontons, spring rolls, samosas, that sort of thing. They’re really tasty and fill everybody up, without having to do much.”

If you’re feeling industrious you can make these yourself, but they’re just as delicious from frozen – and you can save all your cooking efforts for the main meal.

THE MAIN EVENT

For O’Toole, the best way to use your air fryer is for all the festive sides.

“It’s really good for roasted parsnips, roasted carrots, sprouts or chestnuts,” she says. You can cook the parsnips and carrots together.

“And then they can be ready and waiting for when you want them – you can get them into a tray, and once they’re cooked, you can keep them at the bottom of the oven or in a tray that you can warm back up”.

And one of the most important parts of any Christmas dinner: “I’ve got to say roast potatoes are very good in there, and you don’t have to pre-boil them – so that’s given you more space on the hob.”

How can you pull off perfectly crispy roasties in the air fryer?

“Chop them up, get them in a bowl, add a tablespoon of water, a little bit of oil and salt – give it a mix, so we’ve got a bit of moisture on them. Then you get them into the air fryer and cook them about 160 or 170°C for about 20 to 30 minutes, so they’re a little bit cooked, then you whack it up to about 200°C to get the golden crispy outside.”

INGREDIENTS

4 carrots, peeled and sliced in half lengthways

Vegetable oil, for spraying

2tbsp runny honey

1tsp butter

Salt and ground black pepper

Air fryer honey roast carrots

SERVES 4

“This one goes out to all the lost carrots over the years that have been just cut into rounds and boiled,” says chef Poppy O’Toole, who goes by Poppy Cooks on social media.

“I’m sorry you went out like that. We will do better. Here’s to more carrots being roasted in honey and going out in style. They deserve it.”

To make this dish vegan, replace honey with maple syrup and use a dairy-free alternative to butter – and you can boost the flavour even more by adding a crushed garlic clove to the honey and butter mix.

1. Heat the air fryer to 180°C/350°F. Get the carrots in the air-fryer basket and spray them with the vegetable oil. Then cook them for 10 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, in a microwaveable bowl, melt the honey and butter together for about 30 seconds, until liquidy, then season well.

3. When the carrots have been in the air fryer for 10 minutes, tip them into the honey and butter mixture and mix well so that they are all coated, then pop them back into the air fryer for a further 10 minutes, until sticky, glazed and tender.

INGREDIENTS

4 Maris Piper, russet or red skin potatoes, peeled and cut into quarters

2tbsp vegetable oil

1tsp fine salt

4. Depending on the size of your carrots, you may need to cook them for a little longer, so cook in fiveminute intervals until tender.

Air fryer Christmas potatoes

SERVES 2-4, DEPENDING ON GREED

“Believe it or not, I’m no stranger to a roast potato or two (or seven), and I’ve made it my life’s work to ensure you have the best potatoes on your plate every time,” says chef Poppy O’Toole.

“With an air fryer, the process is much quicker, which means potato gets to your mouth in half the time –always a good thing.

“For me, the perfect roast potato has a crispy exterior while still maintaining a beautifully fluffy interior, and this recipe does exactly that.”

1. Heat the air fryer to 160°C/325°F. In a mixing bowl, toss the potatoes in the oil and salt, and tip them into the air-fryer basket.

2. Cook for 30 minutes, giving them a proper aggressive toss every 10 minutes, and even poke them with a fork if you want to fluff up the insides further.

3. Increase the heat to 200°C/400°F and cook for a further six minutes, until golden and crispy.

Air fryer chestnut and bacon sprouts SERVES

4

INGREDIENTS

50g butter, melted

500g fresh or frozen Brussels sprouts (if fresh, cut in half)

100g bacon lardons

50g pre-cooked chestnuts, chopped

Sea salt flakes and ground black pepper

“Sprouts are underrated and can be such a delicious vegetable side. When they are cooked right, and not pure mush, they add texture, flavour and colour to any dish,” says chef Poppy O’Toole.

You can easily customise this dish to your guests’ dietary requirements – skip the bacon if anyone is vegetarian, and swap out for vegan butter if necessary.

1. Heat the air fryer to 180°C/350°F.

2. In a large bowl, mix the butter with the sprouts, season with salt and pepper and place in the airfryer basket. Just chuck over the bacon lardons.

3. Cook for five minutes then add in the chestnuts. Cook for another five to 10 minutes, checking at five-minute intervals until cooked to your liking.

Why the Swiss Alps will invigorate your soul this winter

Unwind and get back to nature at the beautiful Grand Hotel Kronenhof, says Rosalind McKenzie

The translucent, pastel blue water of the Ova da Roseg river gushes over the rocks, as it tumbles from the pristine Swiss Bernina glaciers above Pontresina. My trackie bottoms are rolled up to my knees and I am barefoot. It’s 9am and it’s about 1C.

Our yoga teacher has already waded into the icy, slightly raging, torrent. She is ‘Kneipping’ – a traditional holistic therapy involving paddling in freezing water. The therapeutic practice is named after Sebastian Kneipp –a catholic priest who pioneered hydrotherapy healing. We’ve been warned that no one does Kneipping at this time of day because it’s too cold – even for the Swiss.

Stood ankle-deep in the water, I wonder what all the fuss is about – for ten seconds. And then the burning shock begins. This is a glacial ice-creek. I breathe in deeply and hop out. I quickly grab a towel and am told to pummel my feet to bring the circulation back. The feeling gradually returns.

And then I get the point of it. There is tingling warmth in my toes which radiates quickly through my entire body. It’s like an adrenaline shot – and puts a zip in my step all day. Invigorated, I climb back up the slippery, frosty banks and into the welcoming warmth of the Grand Hotel Kronenhof.

Pavillon

For 176 years, the property has been a glorious fixture of the fairytale Upper Engadin valley, expanding from a humble inn to become a luxurious five-star hotel with 112 rooms and a heavenly spa.

Unlike most high-end hotels, including those in nearby St Moritz, Kronenhof stays open throughout the autumn for visitors to experience the incredible changing seasons – from blazing yellow larch trees to enchanting snow-covered forests.

And while the area is best known for its winter sports and 300 days of unbroken sunshine, the crisp air and pine-scented forests are a perfect tonic for wellness enthusiasts. There are plenty of alternative activities to skiing, which starts early here in mid-November.

Exploring the area

One of the best ways to experience the nearby woodland, is the 1.5-hour magical trek from Pontresina to St Moritz. Or you can cycle too; bikes are easy to hire and are fitted with spikes when there is snow on the ground. The paths are clearly marked, with shallow inclines, and a visual treat at the beautiful calm Lej da Staz. It appears like a giant shimmering mirror reflecting the hillside and sky. It’s still possible to swim here in early November before it freezes over.

View the magnificent Pers and Morteratsch glaciers close-up by journeying to the peak of Diavolezza mountain via a dramatic cable car ride. You can have lunch up here on a sun terrace at the stunning Berghaus restaurant, dining on deer terrine and tagliatelle with wild boar ragu. There is also a charming single-track alpine railway from Pontresina that can take hikers to various stations to start their walks.

The perfect base

If the weather is dreadful, the spa and restaurants at Kronenhof would be enough to revitalise the most world-weary of souls.

The hotel is led by charismatic general manager Claudio Laager, who grew up in nearby town Samedan and began work as a dishwasher at a hotel in St Moritz. He speaks five languages including Romansh (a local dialect).

He is passionate about nature and personally takes guests on deer watching tours, fire torch walks at night and a snowshoe hike. He is also responsible for the return of snow shovel races held on the hotel’s ice rink.

The vibe is very relaxed. Pets are allowed – even cats. Dogs are pampered with their own room service menu, a selection of dog beds (depending on their size) and a doggie daycare service provided by the concierge.

Aside from two of the restaurants and spa, they’re allowed anywhere and appear impeccably behaved. There’s no barking, begging, tugging or yapping during my stay. The wellness mood must be contagious.

Spa essentials

There is a gorgeous indoor infinity pool that looks out to the mountains, framed by a gigantic triple-height curved window. It is especially lovely to drift there in the early morning as the sun creeps over the mountain peaks.

You can also do Kneipping indoors when the river outside freezes over, or the ground is covered in snow. The spa has pools at different temperatures, along with a salt water grotto, stone grotto steam bath, aromatherapy sauna and a flotation tank. Spa treatments range from facials to massages. I have the five senses full body massage and finish with a float in the Jacuzzi, listening to the wind whisper through treetops. Clear crips skies and glistening glacial rivers are the only winter blues you’ll experience in this part of the world.

Behind the scenes of Hairspray: Brenda Edwards on inclusion, joy, and timeless lessons

Why Hairspray’s message of unity and hope resonates today more than ever

What is Hairspray the Musical about?

Hairspray is about championing the underdog. A young girl, Tracy Turnblad, has big dreams and wants to be famous. She wants to be liked, she wants to be loved, she wants to get the boy! She is judged by some people for how she looks. Unfortunately, it is still very relevant to the world we’re living in today where you’re dealing with racial tension, discrimination and people just not being able to be themselves. Everybody has a dream, and everybody should be able to pursue that dream.

Tell us about Tracy Turnblad, the main character. Tracy is a young girl who is very naive in a lot of ways in that she doesn’t understand why things are segregated. She thinks everybody should be integrated. I think it’s beautiful the way that she ends up pulling two communities in 1962 Baltimore together against all odds. It’s a story that talks about racial discrimination, but it doesn’t shove it down your throat. It’s not a preachy musical. And all of the songs in Hairspray are wonderful, you really do leave joyful. I just want audiences to leave feeling inspired by Tracy. As one tagline says, she is a young girl with a big personality and even bigger hair. I think a lot of adults could learn a lot from Tracy Turnblad.

You talk about dreams, and you had a dream to become a performer. We saw you on shows like The X Factor trying to make your way before launching an incredible musical theatre career including multiple stints in Hairspray the Musical as Motormouth Maybelle. But in this show you’re making your debut as a director! What made you want to switch from performing?

RIGHT
Brenda Edwards as Mama Morton in CHICAGO | Photo by Paul Coltas

The producers approached me, and because I’ve been behind the scenes and on the stage performing in this great musical, I have another way of looking at it. Our producer says it’s like seeing it with a different lens through my eyes. I’m not going to be changing the central story, because it’s fantastic, but I’ll be investigating and developing it a bit more and getting people to think about it maybe in a slightly different way. Every action has a reaction, and: “How would you react to that?” When I came into the show for the first time and they were singing “The Nicest Kids in Town”, one of the lyrics around race was quite eye opening for me. It’s about exploring that and exploring how times were in 1962 Baltimore.

I’m working with Paul Kerryson, who directed Hairspray for all the productions that I’ve been in and he’s wonderful. I’m really looking forward to learning from him because this is new to me and I’m here to take advice and learn. I want to bring a fun factor to the show, so that people leave feeling good. Just for those few hours I want to give people some release from whatever they’re going through in their daily lives.

Does the in-depth knowledge from being an actor in this show help you now as a director with the technical side of things, like where characters can exit and quick changes and who needs to be where?

Yes, being backstage in a show, you get to see the (organised!) mayhem that that goes on. When we come on stage it looks like this finished article. But I can appreciate all the running up and down that goes on behind the scenes and I want to try to find ways of making it easier for all the performers and for wigs, wardrobe and make up. It’s about letting the performers know that we’re all part of a team: the backstage crew and production, we’re all there to work together. We want to keep the lines of communication open so that we have a big, happy touring family, and we’re supporting each other as actors and performers, and working well with the other departments so we’re all in it together putting on this wonderful show.

You mentioned Paul Kerryson, who has so much experience as a musical theatre director, including previously directing you in this show! What have you learned from him about being a director so far?

He has taught me to listen and that’s very important. I might go in there with an idea: I want to do this and that. And he’ll say: “Well, step back, think about the bigger picture.” He’s a very organic director and his style of directing was very different to what I was used

to for other shows. With Hairspray, you can find actors’ individual personalities and bring that to the table, rather than saying, “This is the character.” I will be listening to the cast and their ideas and suggestions. People always say to me: “Don’t you get fed up with doing eight shows a week for years?” But I never get fed up with it because as far as I’m concerned, it’s a different audience every night. Every night is an opening night in my mind. And I want that energy. I want to see that energy,

Hairspray the Musical was created more than 20 years ago and is set in 1962. How is its examination of racial discrimination in the 1960s relevant in 2024? One of the things I want to do is bring somebody in to talk to the cast about what it was like in those times versus now, and to explore what similarities there are still. Hairspray addresses the story of something that really happened in 1962: the TV channel was there but black people were not allowed to be on television. It’s crazy. I think it’s important for people to not feel scared to talk about discrimination, whether that be sexual discrimination or racial discrimination. It’s a topic that I think needs to be spoken about more than it is. But not everybody understands or necessarily knows the right way to say things nowadays.

I think there is maybe a nervousness about discussing it as points and opinions can be so instantly judged and that can be frightening. It’s very important to me that the cast are able to do that and have that open forum and an open platform. I was born in 1969 and I saw racial

discrimination myself back then, and unfortunately, I still see it today. And it saddens me every time. But the one thing that I that I do is stand up for myself. And that’s again, what this story is about, Tracy standing up for herself and what she believes in. And she’s just trying to get everybody else to believe, just as she does, that everybody can exist together.

What are you looking forward to working on in rehearsal?

I’m really looking forward to working with Joanne Clifton who’s playing Velma Von Tussle. She’s amazing. She’s got such a fantastic voice and is such a talent. And there’s also Gina Murray, who will be playing Velma in the first part of the tour. I had the pleasure of working with her previously on Hairspray and she is a phenomenal actress. You know, I’m really, really pleased with the cast that we’ve got. It’s going to be spectacular.

I know you’re very passionate about inclusion and diversity, how much were you able to be part of bringing the team of cast and the creative together for this production?

I’ve always been about inclusion. And, with this show about racial discrimination as well other discrimination, it’s important that backstage as well as front of house as well as on stage, is fully representative. I think we have that down with this cast and the crew.

As part of that, you held open auditions and that’s how you found your Motormouth Maybelle!

Yes, I was very, very proud of that. Again, it’s about inclusion and just giving an opportunity to somebody who would not necessarily have had it. And we found our Motormouth Maybelle, Michelle Ndegwa, and she’s got a beautiful voice. As soon as she started singing, I got the goosebumps, my arm hairs were sticking up! Motormouth to me is the linchpin of the show with some phenomenal songs like “I Know Where I’ve Been”. I’m excited just thinking about her voice and getting that chance to work with her and develop the Motormouth Maybelle character, which was the role that I played so many times and for everybody else to hear her beautiful voice that’s got so much soul and gospel heart.

When you did the open auditions did it make you quite optimistic about the future of musical theatre in this country?

Well one of the reasons why I wanted to do them is because I came from an open audition. That’s how I started my career in musical theatre through the X Factor. I queued up, and I did my best, and I succeeded, and reached the semi-finals.

So, it’s nice to give encouragement to others who would not necessarily even know the channels to go through because it’s such a competitive market, finding an agent and getting them to sign you up and believe in you. That’s not easy to do. And yes, there’s some amazing talent out there. We had a couple of thousand people come through and I’m so glad that we managed to get some of that talent on our stage in our show.

Do you have a favourite song or number in the show?

I love “Big, Blonde and Beautiful” because it’s a fun song and it goes through so many different levels, so many different gears. By the time I used to finish that, I was absolutely knackered! “I Know Where I’ve Been” I think is my favourite song to sing in the show because of the message and what it’s about. And you can’t top “You Can’t Stop the Beat”, it’s a fabulous song. A real feel-good song. Everybody’s up on their feet, dancing, singing, clapping, and it’s just a barrel of joy and excitement and passion and Drew McOnie’s choreography is spectacular.

Will you give any advice to those newer actors on how to survive a tour playing in 33 locations over 10 months?

This is going to sound crazy, but I invested in an air fryer! And I’m telling you, I managed to cook my eggs, my bacon and my baked beans in that one pot in the mornings. But the main thing that I would say to everybody who’s coming is, just pace yourself. It’s a long time to be on the road. Emotions are high and low because if you’ve never been on the road before and you’re leaving your family and your friends behind, that can be quite hard. That’s why it’s important in the rehearsal process for everybody to come together and know that they’re touring family. That’s your family for the next nine months. Eat well, sleep well and look after yourself.

What do you want audiences to take away from Hairspray the Musical? Life is short. So come and spread the joy of bringing everybody together as one happy community. Forget your troubles for one night and come along and have some fun with Hairspray.

How to transform a bland bedroom into a festive space

‘Tis

the season to get your guest room ready, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

When it comes to dressing the home for Christmas, it’s only natural our living rooms steal the limelight and become the focus of attention.

After all, this is where the fir tree grabs the spotlight in all its twinkly glory – central to family gatherings and festive get-togethers. But spare a thought for sleepovers, namely the spare room…

Indeed, according to a recent survey by David Wilson Homes, 55% of British adults will travel to visit their families over Christmas, and 45% will host family members.

Moreover, their findings revealed more than four in ten respondents with a spare bedroom (42%) wouldn’t be prepared for a guest to stay.

To pave the way for hosting over the holidays, David Wilson Homes has teamed up with interior design expert, Rebekah Earls from Show Business Interiors, to help you get guest ready…

Declutter

“Before you begin adding festive touches, make sure your spare bedroom is clean, tidy, and ready for visitors,” highlights Earls. “Decluttering can be easier said than done, especially if your spare room isn’t often stayed in – and has become a storage room.”

Ottomans and underbed storage can hide unwanted clutter, suggests Earls, and think about stylish units for organising bits and pieces. “You can also use the walls for vertical storage, freeing up valuable floor space.”

Warm bedding

Having fresh bedding is a must, notes Earls. But as she points out, think about those little things to add that extra festive touch.

“Using rich cotton bedding will make guests feel especially cosy, and additional blankets are always welcome for cold winter nights. Think about what colours you’d like your festive bedding to be too,” underlines Earls.

“Traditional Christmas colours like deep reds and rich golds will set the perfect scene, adding warmth to the room.”

Faux fur

“Soft furnishings bring warmth, helping to create that extra sense of cosiness during winter,” enthuses Earls. “You can emulate that cosy log cabin aesthetic in your bedroom by introducing faux fur. “Faux fur rugs add comfort to a room, particularly if you have hardwood floors. Placing the rug in the centre of a large bedroom can help pull the space together.

“Or placing it by the side of the bed ensures guests have somewhere soft to change into their slippers – nobody wants cold feet on Christmas morning!”

She recommends choosing a solid colour faux fur rather than a bold pattern. “Prints like leopard or cheetah tend to give off a tropical vibe, so it’s best to stick with classic neutrals like white or brown for a more refined look.”

If your room has a strong colour scheme already, find a festive print to match. “There are lots of Christmasthemed bedding options available this time of year, so it might be easier than you think to find the right colour to fit your room.” BELOW

Fairy lights

A spare set of fairy lights might be just what you need to add a festive touch…

“Fairy lights create a beautiful ambience if used tastefully, but there are three things to watch out for when deciding if fairy lights are right in a bedroom,” warns Earls. Firstly, she says to make sure the light colour is a warm white rather than blue. “You want the room to feel warm and cosy before bed rather than icy and cold.”

Secondly, make sure the fairy lights have a slow twinkle setting at the very most, as flashing lights may make it difficult to sleep.

Finally, make sure they can be turned off easily. “Nobody wants to climb behind a bookshelf to find a plug socket at night to turn the lights off.”

Personal touches

“Christmas is a time of coming together, and you can show loved ones you care by adding personal creative touches.

“While you’ll want to save your big gifts for Christmas Day, providing a few new toiletries for them to use can be a simple show. To make it even more special, ditch the cardboard packaging for a festive wicker basket.”

Furthermore, she says chalk marker pens are inexpensive and can allow you to decorate a bedroom in ways you may not have thought of before.

“Chalk pens allow you to draw on windows, meaning you can add mistletoe around the window edges; or even write a personalised message to greet your guests as they enter the room.”

Appeal to all the senses

Creating a beautiful space is important, but have you considered scents and sounds too?

“The Christmas period has some incredible hallmark scents which provide a peaceful and festive atmosphere,” opines Earls. “Scented candles are everywhere this time of year, with festive scents like pumpkin spice, fresh pine, winter berries, or cookie dough.”

Sound is also important. “A lot of people have trouble sleeping in an unfamiliar bed, regardless of how comfortable they are in your home.” She says one way to make them feel more comfy is to provide a speaker, so they can play their music quietly at night. If your spare room has a TV, think of a few festive films to watch before they go to sleep.

Provide storage

Nobody likes living out of a suitcase, especially not over Christmas…

“Providing a set of drawers and somewhere to hang their clothes may seem simple, but will go a long way in making them feel more at home. Additionally, offering to store their bags or suitcase in another room during their stay can help free up more space – and help them settle in,” adds Earls.

For homeowners seeking to utilise their loft space without the cost and formalities of full structural changes, there are numerous creative options. These transformations avoid the need for extensive building regulations, focusing instead on functional and versatile uses.

Storage Solutions

Transforming your loft into a well-organised storage area is one of the simplest and most practical uses. Add shelving, cabinets, or custom storage to keep infrequently used items—like seasonal decor or memorabilia—tidy and accessible while freeing up space in your home.

Creative Spaces

Artists and crafters can convert lofts into art studios, complete with storage for supplies and space for easels. Families may prefer a playroom filled with toys and games, creating a dedicated area for children to enjoy.

Functional Workspaces

A loft can become a peaceful home office or study area, ideal for remote work. With a desk, ergonomic chair, and proper

lighting, you create a private, distractionfree workspace. Similarly, a reading nook with cosy seating and bookshelves offers a tranquil retreat for book lovers.

Personal Retreats

Fashion enthusiasts can design a dressing room with hanging rails and shelves to organise their wardrobe. Alternatively, fitness enthusiasts can turn the loft into a home gym or yoga studio. For entertainment lovers, a loft can serve as a snug media room or gaming hub.

Simple Upgrades, Big Impact

Basic improvements like floor strengthening, insulation, Velux windows, and pull-down ladders can enhance functionality and comfort. Elegant transformations can be completed in just seven days, providing a cost-effective and non-invasive alternative to full loft conversions.

Update your kitchen in time for Christmas

From budget-friendly solutions to pre-loved kitchens. By Sam Wylie-Harris.

You know it’s coming… with party season (almost) upon us, it’s the time of year when your kitchen takes centre stage. Probably the busiest room in the house, it’s going to be buzzing with festive activity and as Looeeze Grossman, founder and CEO of The Used Kitchen Company puts it: “Serving as the hub for holiday meals.”

So with your hostess hat on, here’s how to create the most efficient and convivial scheme, seating plan and tablescape, to make every space count.

Here, Grossman shares her top tips and tricks to update your kitchen in time for Christmas without breaking the bank…

Budget-friendly seating solutions

If it’s your turn to host family and friends, you may be worried about how to fit everyone around the kitchen table, especially if you’re working with limited space. “Fortunately, there are lots of creative solutions you can utilise in order to ensure everyone can eat together in comfort,” reassures Grossman.

If there’s an extra table or desk you can add to your existing dining space, lay out your table in an L-shape, or parallel to each other, says Grossman. “So everyone can dine comfortably and none of your guests have to eat in a separate room.”

“Another alternative is to add foldaway chairs and stools around the table so the whole family can fit in,” suggests Grossman. “And store these items away after the meal. You can always ask your guests to bring a chair or two, an easy and cost-efficient solution to accommodate everyone,” she adds.

To unify the space and create a cohesive look, she says to use matching Christmas-themed tablecloths and runners.

“Add candles and small vases of festive flowers down the middle of each table and finish it off with napkins in bold seasonal colours,” underlines Grossman.

“These simple tweaks will make two separate tables feel like one, giving the room a polished and festive touch.”

Investing in your kitchen for year-round benefits

If your budget allows for a bit of flexibility, consider making a few smart investments in your kitchen and dining area, notes Grossman, which you can continue to enjoy throughout the year.

Whether you’re planning a New Year’s party or you’re expecting to host friends and family at other times, these investments will pay off in the long run, highlights Grossman.

“If you’ve got a large table but limited amount of chairs, consider utilising a bench so you can fit more people along the table.

“You can usually find these on places like Facebook Marketplace or second-hand furniture shops – and you can make use of the bench in the house, or as garden furniture after,” says Grossman.

Another option is to invest in a table extender or foldable table. “Whilst this option may come with a higher price tag, it ensures you’re always prepared for extra guests.”

If your space simply isn’t working anymore and it’s time for a full kitchen renovation, she says to explore used or ex-display kitchens. “You can find high-quality kitchens that meet your entertaining needs while saving up to 70% off the recommended retail price – ensuring your home is ready to host all-year round.”

Moreover, Grossman says you can find kitchens starting at £1,750, including worktops and some appliances, depending on the configuration.

“The key to buying a used kitchen is to opt for a larger kitchen than you need, giving you worktops and cabinets to use as fillers and end panels,” advises Grossman.

“Painted kitchens would be my choice – they offer longterm versatility, as they can be easily refreshed with new handles and a fresh coat of paint.

“Another tip is to focus on the worktops and appliances on offer, as these elements will play a key role in creating your statement kitchen.”

Elevating your kitchen with festive decor

As the holiday season approaches, many of us fill our living rooms with cosy lights, seasonal decorations and a beautifully decorated Christmas tree, notes Grossman.

However, our kitchens often miss out on the same warm, festive vibe…

“Fortunately, there are lots of creative ways you can integrate the holiday spirit into your kitchen,” says Grossman. Start by adding candles with seasonal scents such as nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon. “Not only do they create a cosy atmosphere, but help eliminate any cooking odours whilst whipping up holiday feasts.”

Swap your everyday dish towels with Christmas-themed ones. “Not expensive and can be picked up in your local supermarkets and pound shops – definitely adding a bit of Christmas cheer.”

“Replace everyday ornaments with bowls or baskets of pine cones, holly and seasonal fruit… a glass vase full of mandarins or satsumas creates a striking talking point.”

She continues: “A small Christmas wreath hung on a kitchen cabinet door or kitchen window adds a simple yet impactful element.”

Wrapping large red ribbons to your cabinets has also been a growing trend in recent years, notes Grossman, “adding an extra layer of festive charm with minimal effort.”

Chatting with Paul Miller

We talk to Paul Miller from Stone Zone & Landscaping Supplies to learn about the company’s origins, its customer-first approach, and the exciting future of landscaping supplies.

Can you tell us a bit about the origins of Stone Zone & Landscaping Supplies? What inspired the founding of the company?

As an adult seeking some shingle for my own driveway, I quickly discovered a huge gap in the market for Aggregate deliveries. I started the business in 1998 with just a tipper delivering small loads to local trades and DIY customers.

Coming from a service background myself, I quickly realised that nobody in the industry on a local level made any concerted effort to establish business relationships or to offer continuous customer service.

This inspired me to set a high standard of customer service; prioritising customer satisfaction as the main ethos of the company’s values.

How has the company evolved since its inception?

The company has evolved hugely since its beginning; adopting the names Dorset Soils and Aggregates and Stone Zone & Landscaping Supplies to appeal to a nationwide customer base that includes both domestic and commercial customers. We operate across four Stone Zone depots across Dorset, including our original

Ferndown depot, Dorchester depot, Bournemouth depot and Christchurch showroom. The company carry out hundreds of deliveries a month all across the UK. Our product base has expanded massively; supplying hundreds of Garden Paving ranges, Decorative Stones, bespoke Soil blends, Decking and much more! We now have a diverse team of 31 staff members that all pull together to meet the same, original objective; great customer service.

Are there any standout milestones or growth points that you’re particularly proud of?

Around 2005 was the year we opened our first ever physical depot in Ferndown which created huge opportunities for us to sell to the Trade and public, as well as create inspiring displays and speak to customers face to face. In 2019, we were awarded the BALI Award for Exceptional Service. This prestigious award recognises exactly what my company has always stood for; great service.

Congratulations on the new Christchurch showroom! What inspired the decision to open this new location, and why Christchurch specifically?

Thank you! It feels like a long time coming but I’m so pleased it’s finally set up exactly as I’d pictured it. As our customer base is constantly expanding, we have seen a huge intake of customers towards Hampshire, particularly in the Christchurch and surrounding areas. Christchurch is

a highly affluent area with many houseproud homeowners looking to renovate their garden, and with our Christchurch showroom being in the Christchurch Trade Park, it makes it the ideal location for customers who are already looking at carrying our home improvements

How does having a physical showroom impact the customer’s buying journey? What advantages do you feel the showroom brings to people shopping for landscaping supplies?

Despite the impact of COVID-19 pushing customers towards buying online, we still see a huge demand for customers to ‘look and feel’ what they are buying; especially when it comes to a home investment. Having a showroom where all of our products are on display not only inspires customers with garden ideas, but cements in their mind what they are really looking for out of their garden. Being able to walk across the Porcelain Paving they’ve been looking at, or seeing how stunning our Decorative Aggregates really are in person is a huge advantage to those that are shopping around for landscaping supplies.

Could you walk us through the range of products and services Stone Zone currently offers? What are some of your most popular offerings?

We offer all kinds of garden Paving; including our best-selling Porcelain Paving, Natural Sandstone and Limestone Paving and Block Pavers. Our Decorative Stones consist of Driveway Shingle and coloured Chippings, Pebbles, Slate Chippings and many other varieties in an array of colours and sizes. Our bespoke blends of Soils are also hugely popular and well-reviewed; including ranges such as Wessex™ British Standard BS3882 Soil, Multi-Purpose Compost and then Woodland Mulches and Wood Chippings too. We also supply high quality Wessex™

Turf, Decking, Resin Bound Aggregates, Sleepers and more; if it goes in a garden or landscape – we sell it! We can also provide garden waste removal services too.

Who would you say is your primary customer base? Do you cater more to individual homeowners, landscaping professionals, or a mix of both?

We really cater to everyone and anyone! Homeowners come to us to buy as little as one small bag of Stones to a whole new garden with a new patio, flower beds, driveway etc. Landscaping Trade regularly buy products for their customers where they will carry out the work and develop the most beautiful landscaped gardens.

We also supply to huge clients that might be developing large gardens or landscapes for the public. We supplied the Wessex™ Dutch Tree Sand for the famous Poundbury Dorchester project run by the (now) King Charles and have supplied many aggregates to National Trust parks.

Sustainability and eco-friendly practices are top of mind today. How does Stone Zone integrate these values into its operations and product offerings?

Absolutely, as a landscaping supplier, the environment is always at the forefront of my mind. All of our Soils and Composts are completely peat-free. Many of our products, such as Woodland Mulch,

Wessex™ Composts, and Wessex™ Coffee Soil are also made with recycled material such as decomposed, certified green waste and used coffee grounds from local sites. This keeps carbon emissions low and encourages green waste recycling. Our Railway Sleepers are either recycled or made from 100% FSC Certified wood; our Composite Decking is also made up of FSC Certified wood and recycled plastics. We are looking at a way to be completely Carbon Neutral very soon as we recognise the transportation of our products.

In your experience, what sets Stone Zone

It has to be our level of customer service; we aim to go above and beyond expectations from the moment you step foot into our depot to the moment you receive your delivery from our friendly delivery drivers. We receive great feedback in relation to our customer service. In-store you will be greeted by a friendly and experienced Customer Advisor who will be more than happy to assist you. Over the phone you will speak to a member of the Sales Team, who can also give you product advice, assist you with any delivery queries and places an order for you. Lastly, online we have a Live Chat with the same dedicated Sales Team waiting to answer any queries you may have. We are 100% committed to providing the best customer service experience at every step of the customer journey.

What are some trends in landscaping and garden design that you’ve seen recently?

Beige is the new grey in terms of colours people are going for. Customers are opting for rectangular paving slabs as opposed to mixed size paving slabs too. There is more of an emphasis on natural greenery which

is great to see; with many people looking to plant their own fruits and vegetables, as well as bee and butterfly friendly flowers.

Looking ahead, what are some of your goals for the future? Are there any exciting plans or upcoming products that customers should look forward to?

I’d love to open up a new showroom in the Hampshire area following the popularity of Christchurch showroom. We have recently introduced Pergolas and Indoor/Outdoor Paving which we have seen some interest in. We are always adding new Porcelain Paving to the range to include new patterns and colours, as well as new Soils to meet ever-changing planting requirements.

Lastly, how do you envision the landscape industry evolving over the next few years, and what role do you see Stone Zone playing in that future?

With the rise of housing developments across the country, we are anticipating a growth in purchases for smaller gardens with Porcelain Paving remaining a bestselling garden paving option. There is also an emphasis on Urban areas going Green. There will be a demand for Soil which has a great drainage capability in urban areas for trees that are planted within pavements; Wessex™ Dutch Tree Sand would be ideal for this. As well as the growing trend of ‘Rooftop Planting;’ creating beautiful gardens on rooftops of offices and shops; This is what our Rooftop LECA Soil has been designed for. Lots of exciting evolution in the landscaping industry to look forward to!

MOTORING NEWS

Mark Slack tells us the latest news on all things motoring.

JAGUAR REBRAND –NEW ERA OR FINAL FLOURISH

Jaguar have released brief details of its new design philosophy – Exuberant Modernism! Having arguably already lost its way and only now producing SUVs, the E-Pace and F-Pace, with both of these models ceasing production shortly it means that in the UK only new cars in stock will be available with no new Jaguars being built until the company’s new electric range begins in 2026.

The new models will, say the company, focus on high-end, high-margin vehicles effectively meaning that ‘affordable’ Jaguars will no longer exist unless you have deep pockets. The rebrand is full of design, and to be honest marketing speak, statements with the next stage of the brand’s transformation to be announced in early December at Miami Art Week.

While applauding its commitment to electric vehicles and matters environmental many commentators, this commentator among them, have doubts. Jaguar’s unique appeal lies largely in its heritage and whilst looking backwards can be a mistake many other companies have capitalised on their retro value far better than Jaguar’s plan.

In the first instance why would you effectively remove your entire range from sale before you have anything to replace it? Looking at other manufacturers their transition has been a gradual one and although a different type of vehicle both BMW, with MINI, and Fiat with the 500 have made the most of their retro heritage while adopting the very best of modern technology.

Jaguar’s plan appears to suggest, despite the design and marketing speak, a dramatic move away from its heritage even though heritage and modernity can be as one.

Their plans have left many enthusiasts disappointed with the direction the company is taking, but to be fair to Jaguar they have to search out new customers of a different generation and that will involve change.

Since the introduction of the F-Pace new first-time customers have come to the Jaguar marque, but just because you want a new generation of customers doesn’t mean they don’t want their cars to be interesting in terms of their heritage. The i-Pace, Jaguar’s only EV, hasn’t exactly been showered with praise for its design and one can only hope the hype around this rebrand doesn’t end up destroying what remains a great British marque.

CUPRA BORN - INDIVIDUAL WITHOUT BEING OUTLANDISH AND VISUALLY LOUD

In a motoring world where so many cars share so much architecture, it’s rare to find anything different at an affordable price. However, I think I have found it in the stylish shape of the Cupra Born.

Although the more observant may spot similarities with its VW garage-mate the ID.3, the Born feels distinctly different. It has a more sporting, angular look that suits the overall design better in my view with detail touches such as copper highlights, subtle skirts and diffusers and a more rakish profile.

Inside there’s still, sadly, the infuriating VAG touchscreen controls, added to which the Born shares with the ID.3 only two electric window switches on the driver’s door. In order to lower the rear windows, you have to press an extra switch to effectively reprogram the buttons from front to rear. Madness!

There’s also a stalk off the steering column to operate the car i.e. Drive, reverse etc. A modern version of a column change for those old enough to remember. A bit too

quirky, as are many of the controls, but it does leave the central console clear for lots of in-car storage.

The remainder of the interior is superb with a premium feel, nice tactile materials and possibly the most comfortable seats in any car I’ve driven in some time. The sculptured, bolstered design looks like it would test the limits of Kevlar, but once seated you realise they are tremendously comfortable and supportive.

As one might expect the Cupra is a distinctly sporting drive yet manages to retain enough compliance to be comfortable, helped considerably by those front seats. It provides

good entertainment on more twisting roads and being rear wheel drive adds a delightfully old school feel for enthusiastic drivers. Even the least powerful version will reach 62 mph in 6.7 seconds.

Three battery options offer 59kwh, 77kwh and 79kwh, the lead-in 59kwh develops 230PS and will cover 269 miles. In the real world I’d suggest you would be looking at about 220 miles. Higher trim models do significantly increase range but of course the price is higher.

The top line VZ model will cover around 320 miles in real world driving and developing 326PS it passes the benchmark 62mph in a brisk 5.6 seconds.

The Born has much to commend it with a premium feel, good build quality, lots of equipment, even the lead-in model, hugely entertaining to drive and by modern standards good pricing. The range starts from £35,495. Perhaps its biggest plus though is being individual without being outlandish and visually loud.

There are relatively few cars that can bridge the automotive class divide, but one of them surely has to be the Volkswagen Golf. Launched back in 1974, when air cooled ruled in the VW line-up, designer Giorgetto Giugiaro penned a clean and sharp design that, while softened somewhat over the years, is still recognisable today.

controls for temperature control and a requirement to dig into the touchscreen menu for any further climate adaptations. At least the touchscreen itself is of a decent

There’s the usual plethora of safety kit that warns you of things you already know, this is the same on all new cars irrespective of manufacturer, but those in the Golf are among the least intrusive to their credit.

LEXUS LBX – IMPRESSIVE DEBUT FOR LATEST CROSSOVER

Sometimes when a test car turns up on my driveway, a glance is passed, and it’s back to the keyboard. Occasionally though its arrival is heralded by a bright and glowing hue cast through the window of my office. Such was the case with the latest Lexus, the LBX. Passionate Yellow, yes really, isn’t even an extra cost option. Therefore, if you like bright then Lexus can certainly deliver.

A compact crossover it has the usual stand out Lexus styling along with a distinctly premium feel. It uses the same 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine that features in the Yaris Cross (upon which it is loosely based) and with hybrid assistance. The all-wheeldrive version adds an additional motor at the rear. The hybrid technology follows the usual rules in offering electric propulsion at low speed with the engine cutting in smoothly when required.

no exception. Arguably riding a little on the firm side it’s nonetheless comfortable yet manages to prove enjoyable through the bends, feeling positive and surefooted even in standard two-wheel-drive form.

Equally at home parked at a budget supermarket or the front of a grand Schloss, evolution rather than revolution has kept the Golf at the forefront of the sales charts for decades. Classy advertising has also played its part, if you’re of a certain age who can forget Paula Hamilton in the Golf advert Changes, with the Alan Price soundtrack that gave the campaign its name. Or the Golf GTi advert The Man, which stated everyone must have something in life they can rely on.

Lexus has always managed to ensure their CVT automatic gearboxes are suitably muted compared to rivals and the LBX is

As with all Lexus models the interior has a solid and quality build and genuinely feels like a small premium car. There are also proper buttons! While there is some touchscreen interaction required the important such as climate, driving modes and sound system volume are button operated. Even the touch screen controls are less involved than many these days.

In its 50th year the Golf range today encompasses ten model lines with petrol (including mild hybrid option), diesel, and plug-in hybrid power plus manual or automatic gears. Prices start from £27,420 and base equipment includes climate control, heated front seats, lumbar support and electric multi-function door mirrors. Additionally, there’s navigation, wireless mobile phone charging, front and rear USB ports, auto LED lights, auto wipers and keyless start.

My Style model sits just below mid-range and is powered by the 150PS e-TSI petrol engine with 48v hybrid technology. Mated to a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox it makes for an easy and relaxing drive. The same cannot be said for the infuriating touchscreen technology that is fiddly at best, not least the touch sensitive slider

However, the steering wheel controls are fiddly and annoying, making hard work of something that should be simple. There are small touchpad style controls that are far too sensitive and too easily caught when driving. Don’t change what isn’t broken Lexus!

VW have also maintained the premium feel of the Golf and despite a typically Germanic lengthy list of extra cost options the standard equipment isn’t at all bad. The ride is on the firm side but draws a nice line between comfort and enjoyment along cross county roads. There’s decent performance, but as ever it’s not all about speed and the Golf handles extremely well.

Despite rivals bettering it in some aspects the Golf continues to impress with its overall package of comfort, equipment, driveability and sheer class.

The style and character of the LBX follows the tried and tested Lexus mantra of quality and refinement, there’s a decent turn of speed when required and the build quality is superb. The lack of plastic body cladding and noticeably raised ride height also helps in giving the LBX a much more premium look compared to rivals.

Prices are competitive with the range starting from £30,915 and peaking at £41,475 for the top line model. Extra cost option packs are offered but the standard equipment across the range is commendably comprehensive. Many competitors have lower pricing but the Lexus still wins out if you’re looking for a small, well equipped and genuinely premium car.

VW GOLF –UNIVERSAL APPEAL

50 YEARS AFTER LAUNCH

There are relatively few cars that can bridge the automotive class divide, but one of them surely has to be the Volkswagen Golf. Launched back in 1974, when air cooled ruled in the VW line-up, designer Giorgetto Giugiaro penned a clean and sharp design that, while softened somewhat over the years, is still recognisable today.

There’s the usual plethora of safety kit that warns you of things you already know, this is the same on all new cars irrespective of manufacturer, but those in the Golf are among the least intrusive to their credit.

FIRST NEW BENTLEY SPEED SIX IN 94 YEARS

The first Speed Six customer car since 1930 is shortly to leave the Bentley Mulliner workshop. It’s the first of 12 Speed Six Continuation Series cars, each handcrafted over the course of eight months

The completed car is soon to be dispatched to the USA – marking the first delivery of a new Speed Six since 1930. Existing Mulliner customer John Breslow will be the first person to receive his Speed Six.

Commissioned just over 12 months ago, the classically curated Speed Six is resplendent in Parsons Napier Green bodywork on top of a black-painted chassis. The iconic face of the Speed Six is dominated by the twin

round headlamps, finished in Chrome with a protective mesh and separated by a large number ‘4’ on the radiator.

Crafted by hand from scratch, each car takes eight months to complete, with the expert team of Mulliner technicians working closely with a network of specialist suppliers across the UK to recreate every detail of the original Speed Six.

The cockpit is as authentic as the exterior, with every gauge, switch and control exactly as per the specification of the Speed Sixes

that raced at – and won – Le Mans in 1930. Leather trimmed in a rich deep brown with dominant red tones, the Rust leather and carpet pair seamlessly with the Parsons Napier Green to the exterior.

At the start of the project, the Mulliner Classic team visited the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, Hampshire, to verify the five authentic period Parsons Paints that are available to customers. Over 600 individual new parts, including a new engine block casting, were fabricated for the new 61⁄2 Litre race spec engine, which at the time developed 200 bhp. Dyno testing has shown the Continuation Series engines to develop 205 bhp.

The Speed Six is regarded as one of the most important Bentleys in history, being the most successful Bentley racing car ever produced.

Chasing dreams on the fast track: Jayden’s story

Breaking barriers and achieving new heights in competitive Karting

From podium finishes to mastering new challenges with Nibsport Racing, Jayden’s journey has been one of relentless determination, growth, and success. In this follow-up interview, we dive into the highs, the lessons learned from setbacks, and his aspirations for the future. Jayden’s story continues to inspire, showcasing the power of passion, perseverance, and the support of a dedicated team.

Jayden, you’re so young and already achieving a lot in karting! What first got you interested in the sport, and how did you get started?

I’ve been watching Formula 1 with my dad since I was 6 years old, then when I was 8 my Uncles bought me a voucher for South Coast Karting. I absolutely loved it and have been Karting ever since.

We last spoke to you a year ago, and you were moving on from Cadets to junior Karting, how has it been going?

I moved up to the juniors at South Coast Karting and my first competition was the King of the Coast. I was excited but nervous because the Karts are bigger and more powerful but I raced really well and managed to finish 3rd which was great for my first junior race.

You also competed in the Junior Championship at South Coast Karting, which has just finished, how did you get on? I knew this championship was going to be really competitive as there were a lot of experienced junior drivers in the competition. I was really pleased with how

I did, I was consistently in the A final and gained 4 podium finishes. I was one of only 2 drivers to finish 1st twice. The last race was my best where I won the qualifying, won the Pre A final and won the final. This meant I finished 3rd in the championship which was a great achievement for me.

Alongside the Junior Championship you’ve also moved into owner Karting, how did you make the transition?

A friend of my dad’s introduced us to a team Nibsport. I did a test day for them and it went really well. I joined the team 5 months ago. It’s very different from the corporate Karts that I’m used to racing, the karts are much faster and the competition’s are at a higher level.

How has it been competing nationally since joining the Nibsport team?

It’s a huge step up as I’m racing against some of the best drivers in the country. Matt Isaacs the owner and his team have been amazing, I’ve learnt so much from them. The coaching, data analysis after each session and the encouragement they give me has really helped me progress.

You’ve only been in the team 5 months, what have you achieved in that short space of time?

I have raced in 4 competition’s now and am really pleased with how it’s going. I managed to get into the A final twice and I won top Novice in my last race, which was amazing.

What kind of support have you had?

Sponsorship is a big part of competitive karting, what does the support you’ve had and the support of your sponsors mean to you?

My family, friends and sponsors – Yesss Electrical (Poole Branch), Edgewater Group,

Fitnfix Auto (Bournemouth) and BH Live Active have all been a great support, I couldn’t do this without them. Having my sponsors onboard has helped me on this journey and I extremely grateful to them all. My dad has also been great and is now my mechanic, which helps massively.

Success at such a young age can be thrilling, but what about times when things don’t go as planned? How do you deal with setbacks, tough races and pressure when you’re on the track? Do you have a specific routine or mindset?

I’ve had some great highs this year with 10 Podiums including Enduro races and Mini Grand Prix’s. With this sport you also have lows, I’ve had my kart breakdown in a final, been knocked of the track, stalled at the start of a race. I have to just take it and move on as it’s part of racing. I’m not the kind of person to get angry or stressed about it, I find keeping calm and motivated helps me focus. The highs definitely outweigh the lows though.

Also my karting friends are great, through the good times and the bad, we all support each other and cheer each other on.

Your accomplishments must inspire a lot of young racers, What advice would you give to other kids who want to pursue competitive karting?

Start with a local club, like South Coast Karting. You get to learn essential driving skills and how to compete. Also get advise from people already in the industry. If you are thinking of moving into owner driving join a team like Nibsport, you really do get so much help, support and guidance.

Finally, what’s next for you? Do you have any specific goals or a vision for your future in karting or even motorsport in general?

Next year I will continue driving nationally with the team. I have a few more races before I am no longer classed as a novice, so it will be great so see what I can do.

My goal is to continue racing the best I can, and it would be amazing to eventually drive for a great team in a single seater car.

Chatting with Bex and Lou

We talk to Bex and Lou, lifelong friends and founders of Mint Tea Boutique, about turning their bond into a thriving business, curating unique treasures, and creating a warm shopping experience in the heart of Westbourne.

What inspired you both to turn your friendship into a business and create Mint Tea Boutique?

We always wanted to work together and after a whirlwind trip to Marrakesh (hence the Mint Tea name) we decided on our business.

Can you tell us about your inspiration behind the products you stock and how you curate your selection?

We have both always loved independent shops, the quirky gifts you can’t find elsewhere. And we now put together a collection of clothes we love (or that we know our regular customers will look fab in) from a collection of brands that we’ve slowly curated from the UK and abroad. We’re constantly looking for new and interesting gifts too - this is so much fun when we’re away on holiday or just browsing anywhere!

Westbourne is a lovely area—what made you choose this location for the boutique? How does the community here influence the vibe of your shop?

Our families love the Bournemouth area and spending time by the sea so when a shop came up in Wesbourne we were really excited to take a look, as soon as we walked in we knew it was where we wanted to be.

With the festive season upon us, what are some stand out items you’d recommend for readers looking for unique Christmas gifts?

We have gorgeous ranges of jewellery, natural bath products that smell amazing, as well as fun prints, books and lots more.

Our Nordic socks (so cosy!) are a huge hit at Christmas. From stocking fillers to that perfect dress, we have it all.

The boutique has a warm, welcoming feel—how do you want customers to feel when they walk into Mint Tea, and how do you bring that atmosphere to life?

We’ve made some wonderful friends in Westbourne, regular customers who enjoy shopping and a chat. We always want

our customers to feel happy with their purchases, no pushy sales here!

As co-founders who are also longtime friends, how do you balance your personal and professional relationship?

Do you have any favourite stories from your journey together?

There are too many stories, we’ve always said we could write a book, there have been a lot of highs and lows! and some we should definitely keep to ourselves!

But we first worked together in our early twenties (an office of 200 staff) so like our university – we had so much fun on nights out, dress up days for charity in the office and making plans for when we’d have our own business together... one day! Our 4 girls are like sisters – and we’ve supported each other through the ups and downs of motherhood. So much time drinking tea and eating cake (actually we still like to do that now!).

Any exciting plans or additions on the horizon that readers can look forward to?

There’s quite a bit going on at the moment but right now we’re concentrating on Christmas. Westbourne looks so beautiful with all the Christmas lights.

We’d like to offer all our customers 20% off their next purchase with us. Please use code MAG20 either online at checkout or in-store please bring this copy with you. This will be valid until 13th December 2024.

SERVES 8-10

INGREDIENTS

1 free-range turkey (ideally Norfolk Black or Bronze), about 5-5.5kg

Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

2 onions, peeled and halved

1 lemon, halved

1 head of garlic, halved horizontally

6 bay leaves

Olive oil, to drizzle

8 rashers of smoked streaky bacon

For the lemon, parsley and garlic butter:

375g butter, at room temperature

1tbsp olive oil

Finely grated zest and juice of 2 small lemons

3 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed

Small bunch of flat leaf

parsley, leaves only, chopped

Gordon Ramsay’s perfect roast turkey

If your Christmas turkey usually ends up dry, look no further than this recipe by a celebrity chef who currently holds eight Michelin stars across his restaurants: Gordon Ramsay.

1. Preheat the oven to 220°C/Gas 7. Meanwhile, prepare the herb butter. Put the butter into a large bowl and season with salt and pepper. Add the olive oil and mix well. Add the lemon zest and juice, crushed garlic and chopped parsley. Mix well to combine.

2. Remove the giblets from the turkey cavity. Season the cavity well with salt and pepper, then stuff with the onions, lemon, garlic halves and two bay leaves.

3. With your hands, loosen the skin on the breast from both ends of the bird so that you will be able to stuff the flavoured butter underneath it, making sure you keep the skin intact. Repeat with the skin on the legs – from the lower side of the breast feel your way under the skin and out towards the leg, loosening the gap.

4. Stuff half the butter mix into the opened spaces under the skin. From the outside of the skin, gently massage the butter around the breasts so that the meat is evenly covered. Finally, insert the rest of the bay leaves under the skin of the breasts.

5. Place the bird in a large roasting tray, breast side up. Spread the rest of the butter all over the skin. Season well with salt and pepper, then drizzle with a little olive oil. (If preparing a day ahead, cover the turkey with foil and refrigerate at this stage.)

6. Roast the turkey in the hot oven for 10-15 minutes. Take the tray out of the oven, baste the bird with the pan juices and lay the bacon rashers over the breast to keep it moist. Baste again. Lower the setting to 180°C/Gas 4 and cook for about two and a half hours (calculating at 30 minutes per kilogram), basting occasionally.

7. To test whether your turkey is cooked, insert a skewer into the thickest part of the leg and check that the juices are running clear, rather than pink. As oven temperatures and turkey shapes and sizes vary, it is crucial to check your turkey about 30 minutes before the calculated roasting time. If the juices are pink, roast for another 15 minutes and check again. Repeat as necessary until the turkey is cooked.

8. Transfer the turkey to a warmed platter and remove the parson’s nose, wings and tips of the drumsticks; reserve these for the gravy. Leave the turkey to rest in a warm place for at least 45 minutes; make the gravy in the meantime. Remove the bay leaves from under the skin before carving. Serve the turkey with the piping hot gravy, stuffing and accompaniments.

Maldon Salt/PA

INGREDIENTS

2 slices of sourdough bread

2tbsp mayonnaise

1tsp Dijon mustard

70g leftover turkey

Pinch of Maldon Chilli Sea Salt

Black pepper

Leftover stuffing

Leftover pigs in blankets

50g sliced Brie

1tbsp cranberry sauce

A knob of butter

Cornichon and cocktail stick

Warm gravy for dipping, optional

INGREDIENTS

500g turkey meat, shredded with a fork

80g watercress, chopped

2 x leeks, sliced

150ml crème fraiche

150ml vegetable stock

1 sheet of ready-rolled puff pastry

1tbsp Dijon mustard

1tbsp thyme

1tsp tarragon

Salt and pepper

Butter

Loaded leftover Christmas toastie

SERVES 1, PREP TIME 5 MINUTES, COOK TIME 10 MINUTES

1. Start by assembling your toasted sandwich. Take each slice of sourdough bread and spread the outside of each with mayonnaise. Then fill by spreading a teaspoon of Dijon mustard, followed by the leftover turkey meat. This is a good point to season the toastie with a pinch of Maldon Chilli Sea Salt and some black pepper.

2. Top this with the sliced up leftover stuffing and pigs in blankets. Then top with slices of Brie. Finally finish with a generous amount of cranberry sauce then sandwich the top slice of bread on top.

3. Place a heavy bottomed pan on a medium heat and add the knob of butter. When melted, add your sandwich, then use a heavy weight to press it down. Allow this to cook on one side for approximately three to five minutes before lifting the weight and carefully flipping the sandwich. The other side should be golden and crisp on the bottom. Add the weight back on and cook the other side for the same time.

4. As soon as the toastie is done, remove it from the pan and cut in half. The cheese should be oozy, and you can serve it with a cornichon and cocktail stick in the top. It is delicious served with warm leftover gravy for dunking.

Leftover turkey and watercress pie

SERVES 4, PREP TIME 20 MINUTES, COOK TIME 45 MINUTES

1. Preheat the oven to 180° and grease a pie dish. Cook the leeks in a little butter over a medium heat until soft, season with the thyme, tarragon, Dijon mustard, and salt and pepper.

2. Add the vegetable stock and warm for a couple of minutes.

3. Stir through the crème fraiche and watercress, and take off the heat. Add your turkey meat to the mix and stir until incorporated – pour the mixture into your pie dish.

4. Cover with the pastry sheet and trim the edges to fit your dish – you can always use the excess to make some decorations for the top.

5. Bake in the oven for 35-45 mins, until the pastry is golden brown, and the mixture is bubbling away.
