FIREWORK CRUISE AROUND POOLE HARBOUR TO RAISE FUNDS FOR DIVERSE ABILITIES
Join Diverse Abilities this summer on a cruise around Europe’s largest natural harbour on August 22, setting sail at 7:30pm.
This is an incredible opportunity to experience panoramic views of Studland Bay, Sandbanks Peninsula, and Poole Harbour’s islands including Brownsea Island returning to Poole Quay to enjoy the spectacular firework finale at 10pm.
You’ll be greeted aboard the Purbeck Princess with a glass of prosecco, and have the opportunity to purchase drinks from the on-board bar, and enter a raffle to win an epic hamper.
Mariana Swain, events executive at Diverse Abilities, commented: “We are really looking forward to our fireworks cruise again this August, particularly after the success over

the last couple of years. We can’t wait to welcome our supporters on board for a relaxing evening cruise and firework finale, all in aid of Diverse Abilities.”
This is a great chance to get together with friends and family to enjoy summer evening in style, as well as raising money for Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s Disability Charity. The money raised from the evening will go directly to Diverse Abilities to support over 1,000 adults and children with disabilities with more than 200,000 hours of care delivered across Dorset.
Tickets for the three hour cruise are available at diverseabilities.org.uk/fireworks for £25 per adult and £15 per child, with an option to add on a delicious fish and chip supper (or one of our other options) for £8.50.
SAMARITANS
BOURNEMOUTH RECEIVE FUNDING FOR DEFIBRILLATOR
Samaritans’ Bournemouth Branch has received a cheque for £1,000 from the East Dorset Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA). The money was raised as part of the Poole Real Ale Festival which took place at St Aldhelm’s church hall in a 2-day festival.
Samaritans Branch Director Charlie advised, “We are delighted to receive this kind donation. We have decided to use it to purchase a defibrillator which will be fixed to our Bournemouth branch in Durrant Road and will be available to the local community.
“Recently one of our volunteers had a significant heart attack and thankfully he is now recovering well. It has focused our minds though that now would be a good time to make this purchase and it will be a fantastic community asset too, providing reassurance to our branch members and the wider public.”

THE GREAT TAIL TRAIL WELCOMES
The Great Tail Trail has welcomed more new businesses keen to show their support for local children’s hospice charity, Julia’s House.
Running over eight weeks from 5 April until 1 June 2025, The Great Tail Trail will feature 40 giant mermaid tail sculptures in popular locations across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP). Each sculpture is sponsored by a local business or organisation, given a unique and colourful design by an artist and once the trail is over, will be sold at auction to raise vital funds for Julia’s House.
Leading UK life and pensions mutual insurer, LV=, which has its headquarters in Bournemouth, has confirmed that it will sponsor a sculpture on the trail.
“For many years, we’ve proudly supported Julia’s House through a number of different initiatives such as Charity of the Year, fundraising and colleague volunteering,” explains Harry Hanscomb, Chief Operating Officer for LV=.
“We’re delighted to be part of the Great Tail Trail to help raise much needed funds for Julia’s House and the children and families it supports. The trail is going to be a fantastic addition to Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch and we’re looking forward to seeing our tail on the seafront.”
Other businesses confirmed as mermaid tail sponsors are Poole-based MSP Capital, a specialised provider of bridging and development finance, construction company Beard, who join as installation partner for the trail after their involvement in last year’s Big Dog Art Trail in Swindon and Holt Recruitment Group, who specialise in automotive, aerospace, defence, satellite and engineering recruitment. Organix, one of the original companies to sign up as a trail sponsor, joined the latest sponsors at the Julia’s House Dorset hospice in Corfe Mullen to announce their involvement.
The Great Tail Trail is brought to BCP by Julia’s House and Wild in Art, the leading producer of spectacular public art events. Wild in Art trails can be found across the UK and worldwide, bringing communities together and leaving a lasting legacy. Julia’s House and Wild in Art have collaborated on art trails previously, in 2011 with the Pride in Bournemouth lion trail and in Swindon last year with The Big Dog Art Trail, both of which raised awareness and funds for the children’s hospice charity.

POOLE’S
FIRST PRIDE TO MAKE ‘A POSITIVE, LASTING IMPACT’
Hosted by Lighthouse, Poole’s first ever Pride event has made ‘a positive, lasting impact’ on the town and the wider community.
A celebration of identity in all its forms, the day-long Poole Pride event on Saturday (8 June) featured a variety showcase hosted by CBeebies star Chris Jarvis, storytelling with Pop ‘n’ Olly, the Proud Pooches dog show, OutSpoken poetry slam and Writing Out Loud spoken word performance, as well as two shows of the Come On Out Cabaret, with local Queer performers, and self-styled dark cabaret drag darling Joe Black in session. Local support groups and charities were on hand to signpost, offer advice and provide information.
“Poole Pride far exceeded all expectations, it is making a real and lasting positive impact,” says Tim Colegate, Lighthouse Head of Programming
“We said that if we could make a difference for even just one LGBTQ+ person to feel more seen, more valid, more welcomed, and more supported, then Poole Pride will have done its job – and from feedback received on the day and since, we have succeeded in that regard multiple times over.”
Delivering the first Poole Pride was not without challenges, not least the removal of the planned evening concert after the headline act withdrew. The rest of the bill, Drag Race star Bimini, Charlotte Devaney, Ellie Sax and Woody Cook, will now appear at Bourne Free in Bournemouth’s Meyrick Park on Saturday 6 July.

LEAP OF FAITH: JUMP FOR A NURSE!
Registrations have opened for the LewisManning Hospice Care Skydive, which takes place on Saturday 21st September at Old Sarum Airfield in Salisbury.
Participants will be taking an adrenalinepumping 10,000ft leap into the skies to raise essential funds and awareness of the hospice nurses and the vital services they provide in our community at Lewis-Manning.
This unique event not only promises an unforgettable experience but also offers participants a chance to learn more about the incredible work that the hospice nurses do supporting patients and their families impacted by life limiting illnesses across Poole, East Dorset, Purbeck and West Hampshire. Skydivers will be paired up with a hospice nurse and will support the vital work they do in our communities every day in hospice hubs and in patient’s homes.
A ’Meet the Nurses’ event will be held at the hospice in Poole on the Thursday 4th of July, from 12.30 – 2pm, where skydivers can visit the hospice and hear about the vital work first hand from the clinical team.
The nurses are proudly supporting the campaign, and many have signed up to skydive themselves. Staff Nurse Hannah Quick said “I have seen first-hand the amazing people this money will support. My patients show me every day how brave and courageous they are, so I feel it’s only right for me to do something out of my comfort zone!”
LEWIS-MANNING HOSPICE CARE www.lewis-manning.org.uk/skydive/
Among the brave individuals taking part is Ian Girling, CEO of Dorset Chamber of Commerce. With a life-long fear of heights, Ian is facing the challenge head-on.
Ian advised, “I cannot wait to skydive for Lewis-Manning! I have been absolutely terrified of heights my whole life and even experience vertigo when looking up at the sky. When I was asked to take part, I realised it would be a great opportunity to face my biggest fears, as well as raise money for a vital cause. The nurses at LewisManning need our help, and I am proud to support them as much as I can, to allow them to continue delivering extraordinary hospice care.”
Area fundraiser India Turner said, “We are super proud of our amazing team of skydivers signed up so far. Their bravery will have such a positive impact for our nurses and allow them to continue delivering extraordinary hospice care. We would urge anyone interested in joining in, to register on our web site. It’s going to be a fun day!”
POOLE HOSPICE CELEBRATES SUCCESS OF POOLE PARK MEMORIAL EVENT
Hundreds of people braved the elements and gathered in Poole Park to write a dedication in memory of a loved one at Forest Holme Hospice’s Tie A Yellow Ribbon event.
The free event, which was sponsored by MSP Capital, took place on Saturday 15th June to give the local community across Poole, Wimborne and the Isle of Purbeck the opportunity to come together to remember their loved ones and write a dedication and tie a yellow ribbon.
The event was open to everyone, not just those with a connection to Forest Holme and featured many local craft stalls, special performances by the Citrus Singers choir, the Academy Singers from Poole Academy of Dance and free craft activities for children.
For those who were unable to attend but would still like to make a dedication, the hospice will happily make one on their behalf, which will then be displayed the garden at Forest Holme over the summer.

Summer home trends you need to know about 5
From wabi-sabi styling to fun fusion.
With warmer weather reviving our creative energy and putting us in a sunny mood, now’s the time to take your interiors to the next level with playful updates, stylish touches and pops of colour to elevate your outdoor space.
Here’s what’s hot in homewares and leading the way in furnishings…
Clean Girl aesthetic
Inspired by the vibe of off-duty models, the Clean Girl trend is sophisticated and stylish, yet understated, says Anjelica Delfino, paint and interiors expert at Valspar Paint. “This aesthetic is definitely more of a lifestyle than a fashion statement, and so it also extends to our interiors – a key part of the Clean Girl trend is minimalism and neutrals.”
This is easily infused into the home by opting for a neutral colour palette with accents of linen and wools to soften the space, says Delfino. “Layering these textures elevates the home, ensuring it feels homely and comfortable, yet curated and luxurious – our homes are places of protection, but also of rejuvenation from our busy and fast-paced lifestyles.”
“Decorating with indoor plants will also help create a calm atmosphere making your space feel more zen.”

Wabi-sabi styling
“The ethos of wabi-sabi has become increasingly popular in the interior design world and dates back to a traditional Japanese worldview,” explains Delfino.
“It’s all about celebrating the beauty of imperfection and the natural world.”
Wabi-sabi is known for its simplistic approach, she says, embracing the unique qualities found in natural materials, which creates a tactile and organic feel in home decor.
“If you want to introduce wabi-sabi into the home but aren’t quite prepared to part with your belongings, an easy place to start is with decor,” suggests Delfino.
“Pairing a fresh, brilliant white with a deep, rich brown creates a sophisticated yet understated look.” She continues. “Nature is also a huge part of this aesthetic, so refresh the mind with accents of soft greens that blend seamlessly – and bring the natural world into the home, resulting in a calming interior.
Maximalism
Colour has been at the heart of many trends this year, paving the way for a new wave of maximalism in our homes, highlights Gisela Lancaster, head of buying at Sofology.
“Better known as Maximalism 2.0, this will be the summer of intricate patterns, bold colours and abundant textures.”
The one step change to previous years will be an avoidance of anything too overwhelming, says Lancaster, so here are three tips to achieve the right balance in any living space.
“Start with a cohesive colour palette to help connect the curated clashes in a calm and contemporary way – geometric scatter cushions, graphic curtains, bold wallpaper and a bright sofa can all work together as long as your colour palette remains concise.
Lancaster continues: “Don’t shy away from lime and orange citrus shades when it comes to furniture and furnishings… energising pastels can add real zest to both contemporary and traditional schemes, while welcoming the sunshine into our homes.”
“Mix modern pieces with reclaimed and vintage finds to add character and depth to these bursts of colour and pattern,” she adds.
Fun Fusion
The Fun Fusion trend is gaining popularity, and fast, says Daniela Venturini, art director and trend forecaster at Wayfair.
“In a time where people are keen to create personal sanctuaries and escape the doom and gloom of the real world, this optimistic style brings playful reassurance and a sense of light-hearted spontaneity,” enthuses Venturini.
“Think bright colours and sculptural shapes to recreate the look!”
Fun, refreshing and accessible whatever your budget, she says it’s also ideal for outdoor spaces – both big and small.
“Extending that sense of self with a statement planter or some choice accessories, from bold drinking glasses to durable textiles, makes this an easy aesthetic to recreate.”
Retro Glam
“There’s a reason Retro Glam is a strong trend for this season and beyond, breathing playful nostalgia and reassuring comfort into our homes when we need it most,” notes Venturini. “As more and more people seek familiarity, this considered combination of classic design, traditional detail and contemporary accents really appeals.”
To set the scene, think vintage-look lighting and pretty crystal glasses nestled next to neutral furniture, says Venturini, anchoring that drama for a harmonious finish.
“It’s easy to achieve this look outdoors too, whether you have plenty of room or playing with a smaller space.
“Simply mix jewel-tone velvet cushions with a wicker garden sofa, balancing textures and colour to create just the right amount of eccentricity – choose fancy glassware to add a touch of class.”

The wild and wonderful world of John Burningham at Mottisfont
John Burningham’s Bedtime Stories exhibition and trail 20 July to 29 September
This summer, the National Trust’s Mottisfont in Hampshire celebrates the wild and wonderful world of award-winning children’s author and illustrator John Burningham with a family-friendly exhibition and activity trail.
John Burningham’s Bedtime Stories (20 July – 29 September) will feature over 60 original illustrations on display in a fun, immersive exhibition in the sunny topfloor gallery of this former medieval priory. Some of the artwork on show has never been shown publicly before, including illustrations from one of Burningham’s final published books, Mr Gumpy’s Rhino.
Burningham, whose books have delighted children across the world for five decades, was known especially for the wit and humour in his storytelling and artwork. Themed rooms in Mottisfont’s gallery focus on a number of these stories, immersing families in favourite tales such as the Mr Gumpy series, Avocado Baby (about a super strong baby based on his daughter Emily’s love of avocados), Oi! Get Off Our Train!, and Borka, The Adventures of a Goose with No Feathers - Burningham’s first picture book, for which he won the Kate Greenaway Award in 1963.
Within the playful gallery areas are comfy reading zones for kids to snuggle into with a book, colourful blown-up scenes for family photos, and dressing up inspiration. A life-size ‘magic’ bed will transport young imaginations to far away worlds, inspired by Burningham’s classic story The Magic Bed.
“John’s work is completely original, unlike anything before or since. It is unique.” Raymond Briggs
John Burningham won numerous awards and created over 50 children’s books throughout his 60-year career. He paired eccentric stories with bold illustrations, full of colour and energy. Animals cross into human worlds, and madcap adventures are described as a matter of fact – appealing to the wild imaginations of childhood. But even the most fanciful of narratives carry themes that resonate with multiple generations, from fussy eating in Avocado Baby to the plight of endangered species in Oi! Get Off Our Train!.
Burningham has been described as one of the great masters of the art of picture-book making, with a fearless, painterly approach to media – he applied car paint spray and boot polish to his Borka artworks – that put him at the forefront of a new and vibrant
era of picture books in the 1960s. His wife and fellow illustrator Helen Oxenbury described his art style as “‘everything but the kitchen sink’”, incorporating “sprays, glues, inks, pigments and I would sometimes be asked for some flour.”
As part of Mottisfont’s exhibition, sketches, annotated works, blotter pads and other personal items, including the artist’s paint palette and brushes, reveal how John Burningham created his much-loved stories.
The exhibition extends into early autumn, giving school groups and adult visitors the chance to visit outside of the school holidays.
Outside, the Beech Circle in Mottisfont’s gardens will be transformed into an outdoor garden gallery, decorated with images from Come Away from the Water, Shirley. And an energetic activity trail weaves
through Mottisfont’s spacious gardens, introducing families to more characters, with games and challenges to complete. Visitors can play a game of Would You Rather, and step bravely onto a pirate ship like Shirley. £3 per trail.
Visitors can head to the shop to purchase Burningham books throughout the duration of the exhibition.
John Burningham’s Bedtime Stories exhibition and outdoor activity trail runs from Saturday 20 July – Sunday 29 September 2024. The gardens are open 10am-5pm and the art gallery opens 11am-4.30pm daily. Normal property admission price applies (free for National Trust members, Art Fund members, and under 5s).

Of Europe’s coolest city breaks for a sweatfree urban holiday 3
As the mercury rises in the Med, try these more northerly destinations, says Sarah Marshall.
News Greece is experiencing its earliest ever heatwave might sound incomprehensible to those of us in grey and rainy destinations.
But as temperatures rise in the southern Med, a trend for coolcations in the north continues to soar.
Whether bathing in the Baltic or dining al fresco above the Arctic Circle, city breaks at higher latitudes promise to be extremely pleasant during the summer months.
HELSINKI, FINLAND
Shaping up to be one of Europe’s coolest city breaks, Finland’s capital scores highly in terms of trendiness. Summers are warm enough to spend time on one of the archipelago’s many islands which boom into life during these months.
Head to Lonna, a 10-minute ferry ride from the Market Square, to flip-flop between a hot house and the bracing Gulf of Finland at one of the city’s finest public saunas. Further south, Pihlajasaari has rocky cliffs, grilling stations and a nature trail.
Back in the city, several restaurants have been awarded stars in the new Nordic Michelin guide, including the excellent 14seat Room by Kozeen Shiwan – an edible memoir of the Iraq-born chef’s colourful life plated up in equally theatrical dishes.
A 40-minute drive out of town, Nuuksio national park also has a number of shady hiking trails and clear lakes to cool off in.
BODO, NORWAY
Designated a European Capital of Culture 2024, this rapidly growing northern Norwegian city combines urban attractions with easy access to natural wonders, making it one of the most scenic places on the planet.
Lying above the Arctic Circle on a peninsula between two fjords, it’s ideally located to experience the Midnight Sun – either on a hike, a late night dip, or a round of golf at Bodo Golfpark.
Cool off with a RIB boat ride to Saltstraumen, the world’s strongest maelstrom where 400 million cubic metres of water cross a narrow strait, or a trip to one of Europe’s most accessible glacier, Svartisen.
In town, more than 1,000 performances, concerts, art exhibitions and events will take place as part of the Bodo2024 cultural programme.

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN
There aren’t many country capitals where it’s possible to combine all the conveniences of metropolitan living with the pleasures of natural pursuits.
Made up of more than 30,000 islands, the Stockholm archipelago covers an area of more than 650 square miles and can easily be explored within an hour of leaving town.
Settle into seaside living at Hotell Furusund, a cosy historic home where maritime memorabilia decorates the dining area and bedrooms. Take kayak rides around the island or relax in a sauna suspended in the water.
Get closer to nature in one of the wooden eco cabins at Lidö Värdshus. Later this year, a new hiking trail will launch, forming part of a new route crossing 22 islands from north to south.

How to ace up your attic conversion and make the most of every cranny
It’s all in the detail when it comes to utilising your floor and vertical space, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
The only way is up… nothing beats a well-designed attic space, especially when looking to maximise every inch of your home.
No wonder so many homeowners are creating more room for today’s living – and increased value for tomorrow, meaning that extra space at the top of your house is a win-win situation – but one which requires some carefully considered choices.
Whether it’s a bedroom, office or dressing space, experts share their top tips for working creatively around sloping ceilings, awkward angles, limited lighting and smaller proportions.
Unlock the layout with sloping storage
“Often an under-utilised space in the home, attics are perfect for creating something from nothing,” highlights Rachal Hutcheson, national retail manager at Sharps.
“Getting the storage right in such an awkward space will help unlock the layout of an attic, especially when it comes to sloped roofs and asymmetrical walls.”
ABOVE
Desk and bespoke shelving in loft conversion | Sharps/PA
LEFT
Fitted wardrobe and shelving in loft conversion | Sharps/PA
“Freestanding furniture can be a bulky option for unique spaces, and take up critical floor space,” warns Hutcheson. “Fitted wardrobes for example, designed to the exact contours of a room, offer around 40% more space than freestanding pieces.”
Creating a work-from-home area in the attic is something we’ve seen grow steadily over the years, notes Hutcheson, which is an attractive and incredibly practical use of the space.
“Made-to-measure designs will maximise desk space for files and folders, with additional open shelves for easy access and drawers to help declutter with ease.”
Maximise space with multifunctional furniture
As Patricia Gibbons, head of buying at Sofa.com, puts it: “Attics are often required to be multifunctional spaces, doubling up as combinations of guest rooms, playrooms and living areas.
“Maximise your space in a converted attic by introducing functional furniture that is compact, practical and of course comfortable.”
“Opt for a two-seater sofa bed that serves as a seating area during the day and bed at night. Alternatively, modular sofas with built-in storage make for a versatile option to help with space issues.”
She says Jack in a Box Beds are a great space-saving piece, where a storage bench transforms into a comfortable double bed. “Perfect for impromptu sleepovers.”
Consider flexible lighting options to save on floor space
Mara Rypacek Miller, managing director and founder at Industville says: “Lighting is essential to the aesthetic of an attic, and can be critical in such a space where natural light has not usually been considered in the design of the building.
“Where possible, attempt to introduce natural light to enhance the attic’s spaciousness and create an airy atmosphere – before installing fixtures, define the attic’s purpose.”
For storage, she says bright overhead lighting is essential; for a home office, task lighting near work areas is crucial; whereas an additional bedroom space can benefit from softer, ambient lighting for a cosy feel.
“In low-ceilinged attics, wall-mounted lights or table lamps on tables or desks are a great choice to create a more dynamic lighting scheme.”
“When it comes to materials, consider opting for pewter and brass light fixtures – these warm toned metals add cosiness and character to the space, complementing an attic’s unique charm,” adds Rypacek Miller.
Raise the style stakes with statement seating
When it comes to making the most of a space, furniture plays a key part, underlines Gisela Lancaster, head of buying at Sofology.

“People tend to play it safe with attic styling, opting for white and neutral schemes to maximise the appearance of light and space.”
“A considered approach to seating will not only inject personality into a room – but also help elevate whatever aesthetic you’re aiming for.”
Attics with sloped roofs will naturally feel more compact, and so the proportions of a sofa or chair are particularly important in this space, says Lancaster.
“Consider the silhouette of your seating carefully –armchairs with beautiful details, such as curves, fluting or sculptural cutouts will add interest to a space and effortlessly transform a room.
“If you’re looking for something to stretch out on, a corner sofa with a low back can also help make a room feel bigger, and make the sofa feel less imposing in your space,” she adds.

Pro tips for the best summer BBQ ever 7
From two-zone cooking to grilling sweet treats, these hacks will make you a BBQ legend this summer.
The weather is tentatively starting to play ball, which means one thing: BBQ season is well and truly here. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just dipping your feet into the world of grilling, everyone needs a helping hand along the way.
Experts have given their top tips for taking your BBQ to the next level this summer…
Don’t be afraid to try something new If you’ve spent the last few summers slapping burgers and a few sausages onto the BBQ, it’s time for a change. While you can’t go wrong with a good burger, there are so many other options out there that can take your BBQ’ing to the next level.
“Don’t be afraid to try grilling new ingredients – most things that are cooked indoors can be cooked outdoors too,” says Helen Graves, author of BBQ Days, BBQ Nights (Hardie Grant, £22).
“Try grilling new potatoes, for example (they become beautifully tender with a smoky crust) or try skewering smaller vegetables like peas to get some smoky, charred flavour into them.”
Use natural fire
“When it comes to BBQ, cook with natural fire,” urges Nathaniel Smith, author of Flayvaful (Murdoch Books, £22).
“This might seem obvious, but you can’t beat cooking with coal or wood.”
In the same vein, he adds: “Stop using BBQ fluids, they ruin your food.”
Plan ahead
The best BBQs come from a bit of careful planning. “There’s nothing worse than having everyone wait for you because the meat is taking longer than expected,” notes Smith. “Think about what time you want to start serving people and work backwards. Allow time for your BBQ to come up to temp and if you’re really serious, invest in a chimney starter to speed up the lighting process.”
If you did want the best out of your BBQ experience, you could go one step further and invest in a good thermometer. “Nobody wants to spend money on ingredients just for them to be overcooked,” Smith says.
“Let’s face it, most people don’t BBQ often and if you’re not used to being on the BBQ you can easily underestimate the heat source. Any decent food thermometer will give you precise temperatures, which takes out the guesswork!” Plus, you don’t just have to use the thermometer when you’re grilling – it’s also handy when checking food you’ve cooked in an oven too.

Try ‘two-zone’ cooking
If you don’t set up your BBQ for ‘two-zone’ cooking, now’s the time to start. This is where you place all the coals on one side of the grill, with Graves explaining:
“This leaves you with a cooler ‘coal-free’ zone – use this when your BBQ is getting too hot (for example when too much fat is dripping and is causing flare-ups), for storing food that is cooked but that you want to keep warm, or for cooking ingredients more slowly, for example larger pieces of meat or vegetables.”
Smith is also a big fan of the two-zone method, saying: “So many people burn food because they just put everything on at high temperatures. Have your BBQ set up so the charcoal is on one side for searing and the other side is effectively an oven once you put the lid down.”
Keep the lid closed
Anyone who has BBQ’d before knows the insatiable urge to continually open up the lid and check how your food is cooking – but this could be a major mistake.
Keeping the lid closed is “more economical, it locks in more flavour and keeps your temperature nice and steady”, says Smith.
“This obviously depends on what you’re making, but if it’s not a quick cook, there’s absolutely no need for your lid to be open constantly. This is honestly one of the keys to making the best jerk, because jerk is a method –it’s not just a seasoning.”
Keep things hot and clean
Genevieve Taylor, author of Scorched (Quadrille, £25), specialises in cooking fish on the BBQ – and there are some specific techniques that will lead you to seafood success. “When cooking any sort of fish on the BBQ it’s essential that the surface is very hot and very clean before the fish goes on it, this really helps to minimise sticking,” she says.
“I like to cook fish on a perforated grilling tray that I get really hot over the charcoal before I cook on it – it just means that if things do get a little ‘sticky’ you can lift the whole tray off and use a fish slice under calm and controlled conditions, rather than trying to unstick it directly from the fiercely hot grill bars. Using two skewers per kebab is also a great idea to keep things secure and stop the prices spinning around.”

It’s a good piece of advice for any BBQ – Smith also recommends cleaning your kit regularly, saying: “A dirty BBQ is not only a little bit disgusting, but it also contributes towards temperature spikes and flare-ups.”
Use the dying heat
When you’ve cooked the main meal and the heat is flickering out, use this as an opportunity to cook a sweet treat. “Use the dying heat of your BBQ to cook dessert,” says Graves. “While we’re eating the main course, I love to throw a roasting tray of stone fruits (eg. peaches) into the BBQ with some white wine and spices – close the lid and let them cook in the remaining heat. They’ll become sticky and soft and are perfect served with ice cream.”

Trout, asparagus and orange with mint garlic oil from Scorched | Jason Ingram/PA
BBQ trout with asparagus & orange
SERVES 4
INGREDIENTS
500-600g chunky trout fillets, skinned
200g asparagus, washed and trimmed
1 orange
2tbsp olive oil
Flaked sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
For the mint garlic oil:
A good handful of mint leaves, about 15g, finely chopped
100ml olive oil
1 garlic clove, crushed to a paste
1-2tsp red wine vinegar, to taste
You also need 8 metal skewers
1. Dice the trout into three-centimetre chunks. If you have thinner sections on one side of the fillets you can stack them to make thicker pieces. Cut the asparagus into similar-sized lengths. Leaving the skin on, slice the orange in half, then into quarters and cut into little wedges.
2. Thread everything alternately onto metal skewers, double skewering if you can to make life easier for yourself. Drizzle generously with the olive oil and season all over with salt and pepper. At this point you can slide into the fridge for a few hours until you are ready to cook.
3. Fire up the barbecue ready for hot direct grilling, letting the coals fully burn, and set a grill tray over the fire to get hot. Scoop the mint leaves into a small bowl. Stir through the olive oil, garlic and red wine vinegar and season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
4. Take the skewers to the grill and set on the hot grill tray. Cook for a couple of minutes each side until the trout is golden and crisp. Try to avoid turning the skewers until the crust has formed to minimise the chance of sticking.
5. Serve drizzled with the mint oil, and don’t forget to nibble the orange flesh off the skin as you eat.

Hotel chic: How to create and enjoy ‘everyday luxury’ at home
Style up your space for the look of luxe with these expert tips, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
No longer just for vacations, if a luxurious living aesthetic is on your bucket list and looking to revamp and glow up this summer, a five-star vibe is where it’s at.
Indeed, if wanderlust takes you as far as focusing on the overall feel and functionality of your space, touches of boutique style ‘hotel chic’ will truly elevate your home.
Here, with a curated mix of furniture, lighting and accessories, experts share their top tips for day-to-day comfort crowned with lush accents, without having to stray too far, or jet off….
Bespoke bedroom
“As people continue to invest in their existing homes rather than move into new properties, the appetite for elevating spaces is ever increasing, especially within the bedroom,” highlights Rachal Hutcheson, national retail manager, Sharps.
“Transforming unused box rooms into dressing areas or walk-in wardrobes is a consumer trend we don’t see slowing anytime soon, with many designs centring on an aesthetic commonly seen in premium hotels,” notes Hutcheson.
As well as being a beautiful addition to any home, she says a bespoke walk-in dressing room will also help maximise every inch of space, using clever design features to give you the most storage possible.
“For a boutique appearance, design the space using neutral tones, utilising designated shelving to display fashion favourites, plenty of mirrors and task lighting to make the space feel bigger,” suggests Hutcheson.
Moreover, for a bespoke boutique look, imbibe a sense of calm with a statement bed boasting a low padded headboard, loose linen covers in ivory and putty, strewn scatter cushions and a vase of fresh flowers.
Handsome hallway
The hallway is often the big reveal where you can make an entrance, suggests Jo Plant, Pooky’s head of design. “Of course, while you should keep perspective in mind, you can afford to be quite bold in this space – no one dwells here, so you can be daring with size and colour, without disrupting the space beyond.”
Think about what features you have in your hallway and use lighting to frame and draw the eye, says Plant. “Perhaps it’s an alcove, a console table or large decorative mirror – use wall lighting or lamps to accent these features and break up a long hallway.”
Rather than using strong overhead lights which tend to have a pool effect, she says to opt for wall and table lamp combinations to layer light levels.
However, this only works if you have the space for table lamp options in your hallway. “If not, wall lights are a great option as an added layer, and combined with ceiling lighting with dimmers fitted, you’d be well set-up for a balanced, layered lighting scheme,” she adds.
Statement seating
There’s no doubt the hotel chic trend is having a moment, yet getting it right is just as much about comfort as it is aesthetic, says Gisela Lancaster, head of buying, Sofology.
“Elegant and natural tones, sumptuous fabrics and a combination of clean and beautifully curved furniture all work toward creating an elevated feeling to most living spaces.
“Our homes often cry out for a more cosseting approach and curvaceous, sculptural designs are the perfect solution.” She continues. “For a hotel experience that lasts, look for tactile fabrics such as plush velvets, boucle or even faux fur to offer a real touch of luxury.”
Design elements such as curves, fluting or elegantly turned legs can also maximise comfort while making an impact visually, says Lancaster.
“And enhance the ambiance of a space while injecting individuality into the room.”
Standout lighting
“The key to creating a five-star designer look in the dining room is to invest in statement pieces that inject a refined elegance,” advises Mara Rypacek Miller, founder, Industville.
“This can be achieved most effectively through pendant lighting and quality rugs that not only serve as focal points but combined, evoke a considered and thoughtful scheme.”
Laying down a well-chosen rug will make any room feel brighter and more inviting, says Rypacek Miller. When considering rug styles, she says to opt for handcrafted designs and unique textures that will add depth and a sense of subtle luxury.
“Investing in durable, high-quality lighting fixtures ensures longevity, but also adds an element of instant sophistication to your interiors.”
“Artisanal rattan brings texture to any room and creates a bold statement, casting light in unique and interesting patterns. For high visual impact, clustering pendants will give a high-end finish with timeless appeal.”
Rypacek Miller continues: “These investments may carry a higher upfront cost, but will provide value for money in the long run, keeping your home looking and feeling luxurious for years to come.”

Pretty Woman The Musical
Interview with Kathleen and Barbara Marshall, by Simon Button
Based on the smash-hit film that turned Julia Roberts into a superstar, Pretty Woman is the big musicalbig! huge! - that’s about to get even bigger. Following record-breaking runs on Broadway and in the West End, as well as on a US tour and in cities around the world, the show is now embarking on a tour of the UK and Ireland.
And according to his wife Barbara and daughter Kathleen, director of the film and co-writer of the musical Garry Marshall would have been thrilled to learn of its ongoing success. He passed away in 2016, after working on the production with the movie’s writer J. F. Lawton for many years and dreaming that it might open in New York some day.
“Had someone told him it would such a hit around the world he wouldn’t have believed it,” Barbara smiles proudly. “Not only did it make it to Broadway, it’s bringing joy to so many people in so many other places.”
Speaking in a London hotel on a visit to see the show’s final performances at the Savoy Theatre, Barbara adds: “He’d be here with us if he could and he’d have come to all the places we’ve seen the show.”
Kathleen agrees. “As well as being a director my dad was a writer, which he saw as a lonely profession. He always said ‘Once you finish writing something you just have to bask in it because you’re going to be back in the room writing again soon’. So he would be just basking in the excitement that the show is doing so well.”
ABOVE
Bronx-born Marshall was a Hollywood legend who studied journalism and in the late-50s landed a job writing gags for Rat Pack funnyman Joey Bishop. He broke into TV on the writing staff of The Tonight Show before adapting Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple for the small screen. An even bigger breakthrough came when he created Happy Days in 1974, followed by spin-offs Laverne & Shirley (starring his sister Penny) and Mork & Mindy.
He went on to direct such feature films as Young Doctors in Love, The Flamingo Kid, Overboard and Beaches before Pretty Woman gave him the biggest hit of his career. Set in the late-80s and released in 1990, it was conceived as a much darker story, with LA streetwise sex worker Vivian (Roberts) struggling with a cocaine addiction and Edward (Richard Gere), the rich businessman who hires her for a week, abandoning her at the end.
Known for his heart-warming stories and flair for comedy, Garry worked closely with screenwriter J. F. Lawton to refashion it as a fairy tale romcom in which Vivian falls for Edward’s charms and she rescues him right back.
Marshall decided to make Vivian a more resilient character than she was in the preliminary draft. “After he got the script,” Barbara recalls, “he freshened it up and he made her into this strong woman.”
Garry was a canny choice to direct the movie, given his track record with uplifting women’s stories. “And it’s sort of my dad’s story too,” his daughter points out, “because he came from the Bronx and he went to Northwestern University, where everybody was sort of a little fancier. Then he came to Hollywood and he was constantly his own fish out of water.”
Kathleen appeared in the film, as she did in all of Garry’s movies, as a desk clerk and she recalls it being an easy shoot. “It was a small movie at the time and the studio left them to get on with it. In my memories there’s a lot of Julia and Richard and my dad together, sorting out ‘How are we going to do this?’ and ‘How are we going to do that?’ He was very collaborative and there wasn’t a
lot of stress because they didn’t know what it was going to be and if it was going to work. It was scripted but it was an interesting collaboration, finding little bits about Julia that he could then put in there.”
Fun fact: Barbara is in the film too. “But you can only see my red jacket and hear my voice say ‘Goodbye’. I had a whole scene in Gucci before Julia comes in but when I saw the first cut I said ‘Where’s my part?’ and Garry said ‘It wasn’t necessary’.”
Marshall kept his family close (he was also a father to Scott and Lori) and he had a reputation for being great to work with, as Barbara points out: “He was not a yeller or a screamer. It was a party on set. He wanted to keep everybody’s spirits up because it’s a lot of work and everybody’s tired.”
The budget was $14 million and Marshall was amply rewarded when the film became the most successful romcom ever, with a worldwide gross of $463.4 million.
It continues to enthral viewers and the scene where Roberts returns to a store that snubbed her and declares “You work on commission right? Big mistake! Big! Huge!” has launched thousands of GIFs. “Julia says it is the most quoted line to her from all the things she’s done,” Kathleen notes. “It’s this great scene in this wonderful romantic
comedy, with this woman going ‘You can’t treat me like that’. I like the way that still resonates today.” Barbara adds: “I think it’s also about dreaming and wishing and showing that wishes come true sometimes.”
The idea of turning Pretty Woman into a stage show was her idea. Garry went on to direct the likes of Runaway Bride and The Princess Diaries. “But I kept saying to him ‘You know, this could be a musical’ and he’d say ‘Yeah, OK’ but nothing happened. Finally, maybe 15 or more years later, he and J. F. started writing together one a day week, every Wednesday in Garry’s office for five years.”
Marshall himself said of the rewrite: “It’s always nice to do something again because you saw what you missed the first time. I must confess that the original Pretty Woman was terrific and a hit but I always felt that creatively I didn’t do justice to Richard Gere’s character. So in the musical we have some great new moments for Richard’s character. As much as he changed her life, she changed his life. That wasn’t totally clear in the picture, so we make that much clearer.”

The stage version strengthens the characters even more, Kathleen feels. “And they made it a little more modern but it’s still got the nostalgia and those iconic moments. I mean, people still love to see Edward arrive at that fire escape.”
Bryan Adams and his songwriting partner Jim Vallance were commissioned to write the all-new score, which is very much influenced by late-80s and early-90s rock and pop. Roy Orbison’s ‘Oh, Pretty Woman’ was added a few months into the show’s Broadway run, and Wesley and Alex Orbison even joined the cast on stage to perform the track as a tribute to their late father.
Eventually producer Paula Wagner came on board, as did director Jerry Mitchell. Marshall passed away in July 2016 at the age of 81 but the team was determined to carry on and fulfil his dream of having a show on Broadway. “He was so excited about that,” Kathleen says. “He loved revisiting the story and transforming it into a musical, adding the songs and changing some of the structure. As Jerry Mitchell said ‘It’s all the things you love from the movie and more’.”
The original production played Chicago’s Oriental Theatre in March 2018, with Britain’s Samantha Barks and US actor Steve Kazee as the leads, and opened at
Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre that August - breaking box office records and enjoying a year-long run. Andy Karl took over from Kazee and during previews on August 2nd a performance was dedicated to Marshall, with none other than Julia Roberts in attendance.
“She came and met the cast and we took pictures on the stage,” Barbara remembers fondly. “She was very cute. We were sitting together during the show and she would lean over and say ‘I wrote that line’.”
The show played Hamburg in Germany in 2019 and the West End production opened at the Piccadilly Theatre in March 2020, with Aimie Atkinson as Vivian and Danny Mac as Edward. Forced to close because of the Covid pandemic, it reopened at the Savoy Theatre in July 2021, playing to packed houses until the final performance this June.

The musical also toured the US from October 2021 until May this year, and there has been a Polish-language production in Cracow, an Italian version in Milan and a Spanish version in Barcelona.
As it sets off around the UK and Ireland, Kathleen ponders why audiences respond so positively to this particular story. “There’s a beautiful moment in Pretty Woman where you know that Edward really sees who Vivian is and Vivian really sees who Edward is, and that’s where they connect. There’s a joyousness in the way that people connect in my dad’s shows and films, and he did that in life as well. He really thought you should be there for people when it’s a hard day and be there for them when it’s a fun day.”
Barbara adds: “I think everybody remembers that movie as a happy moment or it helped them with something in their life.” She grins. “Now people come to this musical wearing the clothes, like the famous red dress or the trench coat with the same Julia outfit underneath, in the high boots and blonde wigs.”
And, as Kathleen points out, it’s not just for female audiences. “They bring their husbands and boyfriends, who then end up really enjoying it too,” She smiles. “There’s a lot there in the storytelling that’s really beautiful and romantic and uplifting, and I think everyone can connect to that.”
Tickets for Pretty Woman The Musical (Monday 22 –Saturday 27 July 2024) are on sale at mayflower.org.uk.
In the last 12 months, we have issued more Section 21’s than we have probably in the previous 5 years!
The Ministry of Justice recently released data saying in the first three months of 2024, there were nearly 25,000 cases currently going through the courts, which was up by 6% on the first three months of 2023.
Of course, we must remember, this data is only on those that are going through the court system, therefore the figure will be considerably higher as many tenants will vacate at the given time, meaning the landlord has no need to go through the courts.
I am also mindful, that the current 25,000 cases, was a decision made by the landlord most probably in the summer of 2023, as the courts process the backlog. As I said in my opening paragraph, we have issued more Section 21’s than ever before, and the main reasons for these have been due to the landlord either selling the property or moving back in. Only a very, very small percentage of these are due to the tenant being in rent arrears or other reason.
The main reason for tenants not moving out at the end of their notice period, is due to the increase in rental prices over the last 12-18 months (which has been fuelled mainly by the increase in mortgage rates) and the tenant not being able to find suitable accommodation in the open market.
By the time this column comes out we will know the outcome of the General Election and this no doubt, will change the landscape of property rental sector.

How to get the Bridgerton look at home without blowing the budget
With the world of interiors revving up for Regencycore, it’s time to generate a little grandeur, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
If the viewing figures are anything to go by – Bridgerton became the most-watched show on Netflix when it debuted on Christmas Day 2020 – a summer fling with high society is on the cards.
A costume drama with all the trimmings… risque sex scenes, debutante dresses, glittering room sets and lavish locations; the third season premiered on May 16 and promised to be even more magnificence, with filming at Blenheim Palace for the first time.
Moreover, it’s a marvellous excuse to toy with an aristocratic aesthetic while balancing the budget.

“It’s no surprise viewing habits often influence our home decor,” says Gisela Lancaster, head of buying, Sofology. “This is especially true with a series such as Bridgerton – an exquisite feast for the eyes for any interiors fan.”
“If chandeliers and antique mirrors in every room aren’t quite within reach, then focus on sumptuous fabrics such as velvet and chenille for your seating and wider styling choices,” suggests Lancaster.
Both of these cosy fabrics provide extra opulence to a room, and a simple way to tap into what is best known as Regencycore, says Lancaster.
“Seating with carefully sculpted silhouettes, curvaceous arms and elegant feet all align with an era where decadence and glamour was key.”
She says to keep things light with colour combinations that include pastels, greens, yellow and oranges; and to complement with vintage and antique finds where brass and gold add to a high-society aesthetic.
Flush furnishings
“In Bridgerton, each family home stages magnificent architecture, elaborate decoration, and fancy furnishings,” notes Alison MacLean, who looks after the show homes at St. Modwen Homes.
“Often crafted from dark woods and adorned with Greek and Roman-inspired details like fluted columns and laurel wreaths – Regency-era furnishings ooze extravagance.”
To establish this style in your own home, she suggests utilising contemporary furnishings with inspired elements, such as ornate armchairs featuring slender backs and delicate proportions, tufted sofas, and antique-style wooden consoles or dressers, mirroring the classical style.
“Think graceful curves, delicate details, and luxurious finishes – with a soft pastel colour palette juxtaposed by strong dark woods and glittering gold accents.”
Head to your local charity shop, search online on reselling sites like eBay, or check out Facebook Marketplace for some authentic deals, advises MacLean.
Aspirational architecture
If you love the Bridgerton look but aren’t sure how to achieve it, simple and affordable design additions can make all of the difference, highlights MacLean.
“In 19th century homes, period features such as panelling, coving, and carvings adorned every wall of the abode – creating intricate details that elevated each space.”
Today, our homes generally come as a blank canvas, meaning adding these details is a super easy, highly effective task. “Affordable panelling kits are available from most DIY retailers, and easy-to-fit decorative coving can be sourced simply online,” says MacLean.
Symmetry
In many of the Bridgerton sets, symmetry also plays a crucial part in dressing the scenes, she adds. “You can establish this in your own home by keeping balance in mind when laying out your spaces,” suggests MacLean.
“For example, placing your bed against a wall centrally, and adding two matching tables either side of it; or placing your TV in the centre of the wall rather than the corner. This will help to build classic tropes in your modern space.”
Grand gardens
Exquisitely grand outdoor spaces including suave shrubbery, quaint patio sets and beautiful blooms are all part of Bridgerton’s bewitchment – but how can you glam up your greenery?
As Andrew White, outdoor expert at luxury outdoor living retailer, Harbour Lifestyle, puts it: “The outdoor scenes show us a glimpse into the grandeur of Regencyera gardens.

“Think sophisticated seating areas to court your romantic interests, enchanting florals and greenery, and charming structures to spend an evening under the stars. And believe it or not, this magnificent style isn’t too difficult to replicate in modern gardens.”
Firstly, he recommends creating zones in your outdoor space. Even though Bridgerton is all about large, stately gardens with multiple areas, White says you can still utilise different spots of a garden to create a diverse space.
“Consider building a patio which is ideal for al fresco dining, placing a pergola to encapsulate a cosy seating area, and nurturing a grassy corner to let your bulbs and blooms thrive.”
In case you missed the memo, the Bridgerton set dressers love wisteria, willow and sweet peas; so even containers of potted summer lilac will beautify a balcony.
“The Regency era was defined by high-society gatherings and socials – so your outdoor space should have an adequate area to entertain lords and ladies… or your next-door neighbours!” quips White.
Consider a chic patio set, wooden outdoor benches for afternoon tea and whimsical swing seat to spend those intimate evenings together,” he adds.

Ways to spruce up your outdoor space for summer 5
A little TLC goes a long way when skies are blue and the sun has its hat on, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
A golden ticket for garden glow-ups, the old adage of make hay while the sun shines comes into its own this time of year.
From giving your furniture a fresh lick of paint to pruning your plants, experts give their top tips on how to transform your garden into an outdoor oasis that’s perfect for enjoying during the hottest months on the calendar…
Trim trees and prune plants
“Plants and shrubbery are a great way to invigorate your outdoor space with colour,” says Rachael Munby, chief marketing officer at Anglian Home Improvements. “However, it’s important to keep on top of their growth to stop them from getting out of hand.”
“Overgrown trees and hedges are not only unsightly, but they can also attract pests and cause damage to your property, not to mention fallen leaves or blooms are a nuisance to clear up.”
She says to pay attention to any bushes, hedges or trees that overhang your property or conservatory, as an accumulation of leaves and twigs can block guttering or cause damage.
LEFT

Not only will trimming your hedges and trees mean your garden looks lovely and tidy, but it also means some of the sticky sap which can fall from certain trees won’t build up – or cover your conservatory roof or windows, warns Munby.
“When left in the sun for too long it can become tough to remove, so this will save you the job of regularly having to clean it off.”
Give your garden a quick makeover
“For a quick garden glow-up you can do yourself in a few hours, consider laying your own patio,” suggests Harriet Goodacre, style consultant at Topps Tiles.
“Look for an outdoor specific tile which can be laid on your chosen substrate to create stylish paths, or patio areas that blend in seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.”
If you’re laying tiles onto a concrete or cement surface, she says you’ll need a flexible powdered tiling adhesive and a cementitious grout.
“If you’re worried about staining, apply the grout to a few tiles in a small trial area,” says Goodacre. “If discolouration occurs, you can use a protective sealer to protect the tile.”
To apply the grout, she says to use a suitable grout float, holding it at a 45-degree angle. “Fill the joints and smooth the grout over the tile surface using diagonal strokes until the gap is completely filled.
“Remove any excess using your float before proceeding. Once all joints are grouted, allow to dry for approximately 15 minutes before using a dampened sponge to clean the surface.”
Goodacre reassures: “There are various easy ways to lay an outdoor tile, so you needn’t be a veteran DIYer to get the job done.”

Revamp your existing patio
If you’ve got a lovely patio space, ensure it’s looking its best… “Most outdoor tiles can be cleaned using a pressure washer; however regular washing can affect your grout over time,” notes Goodacre.
If the grout is cracking, falling out, or becoming discoloured, she says to remove at least 3mm of the existing grout so the new grout can have a firm base – and larger surface area to adhere to. “You can do this manually using a grout rake, applying firm pressure as you move it up and down along the grout line.”
For a less labour-intensive method, she says to remove the grout mechanically using a reliable multi-function tool and grout removal saw blade. “Work the blade straight into the grout between two tiles, applying gentle pressure – you may need to use a grout rake to scrape out any remnants.”
Whether removing the grout manually or mechanically, work slowly and carefully to avoid damaging the edge or surface of the tile, she advises. “And always wear a mask. Remove any excess adhesive with a damp sponge.
“When it comes to applying the new grout, do a little research into a permeable grout suitable for outdoor tiles as this should hold up better against pressure washing in future,” Goodacre adds.
Refresh exterior paintwork
With a little paint and a lot of creativity, you can give your outdoor space a completely new look, enthuses Kerry Murfin, VP marketing, Europe at Keter.
“Outdoor paint allows for bolder, braver colour choices – and more opportunity to apply your own personal style to garden fences and furniture.”
Murfin continues: “Neutral shades provide the perfect backdrop for colourful flowers or your outdoor furniture, while vivid jewel tones will give your space an instant facelift and inject personality into the space.”
To create a natural extension of your home, she recommends sprucing up your seating area with an outdoor sofa, fire pit and soft furnishings which can be safely stowed away in weather-resistant storage, should the rain make an appearance.
When choosing storage, she says to look for items made from a durable, easy-to-clean resin or recycled plastic for an easy, low-maintenance solution.
Look after your shed for a longer lifespan “Quality, robust sheds shouldn’t need replacing often, providing they are well looked after,” highlights Murfin.
“And longer evenings mean we can finally get into the garden and tick those niggling chores off our list –summer is the perfect time to assess whether your shed needs some TLC.”
Whilst the weather is dry, she says to check for any holes or signs of leaks, such as pools of water, water marks or discolouration.
“Leakages are usually caused by holes or cracks in the shed or damaged shingles on the roof.” Murfin continues. “If you catch the problem early, it can soon be rectified to stop any further damage.”

Gardeners’ World’s Adam Frost shows how to create a farmto-plate garden
He’ll be cooking up a storm with the help of some celebrity chefs.
This summer, BBC Gardeners’ World presenter Adam Frost will be surrounding himself with edibles as he creates the headline show garden, ‘The Chef’s Table’, at BBC Gardeners’ World Live at Birmingham’s NEC.
The designer and plantsman says it’s a self-indulgent project because he loves cooking. “I probably was that kid that when I left school, they said you could be a gardener, or a chef or join the army.”
Over the years he has come across many chefs and cooks who have taken up the farm-to-plate ethos and he’ll be welcoming guest chefs including James Martin to cook in the outdoor space his has created.
Here he offers tips and tricks about how to create your own farm-to-plate space.

1. Work out your preferred spot
“Working out where you’re drawn to in your garden. If you’ve got a little spot that you love to go and sit but also how are you going to use your garden?”
2. Think about interplanting
“I always feel that people who venture into veg gardening either fall in love with it, or they get frustrated because it doesn’t quite work first time, or they haven’t necessarily got the space just to grow veg by itself.
“This garden is all about interplanting. You won’t necessarily tell that it’s purely a veg garden, as it will interplant the vegetables, the herbs and the ornamentals all in one space.”
Frost’s garden will feature a layer of both fruit and ornamental trees. “The premise is that I’ve found some old apple trees which will go in the centre of the plot, then a selection of other edibles and ornamentals. There will be a second layer of shrubs mixed in with fruit.
“I’ve found that if you interplant in gardens, your garden won’t take as much water as a standard veg garden.”
3. Flip your choices
“We grow ornamental and edible currants and ornamental and edible rhubarb. Think about flipping from ornamental to edibles and you’ll find that it can still look beautiful in an ornamental setting.
“A lot of herbs are really beautiful to look at, like sweet cicely, which is about to come into flower. It has a lovely aniseed scent and can be used to sweeten rhubarb instead of using sugar. We have masses of lovage in our gardens with a celery-type flavour which is good for a lot of meals. But there’s a smaller one called Scottish lovage, which has a lovely umbellifer flower on it.
“Then you have sorrels. You might have a normal green sorrel that we use for fish or stews, but there’s also a silver sorrel which has a lovely silvery variegated leaf which becomes a really good front-of-border plant. It’s just looking at herbs in a slightly different way.”

4. Consider fruit trees
“If you think about fruit trees, we don’t always necessarily consider that we’ve got enough room. But there’s a whole array of fruit that you can grow fanned against walls or in containers on patios.
“You can grow them as little step-overs, which are tiny dwarf fruit with a T-bar on top of them and they go on the edge of a border. So there’s an awful lot more fruit that looks ornamental because of the way that it’s pruned or looked after.”
5. Make the most of the prettiest veg
“You can use leaf beet, with wonderful different coloured leaf beets, different coloured beetroots and carrots. There are some wonderful squashes, a whole array of courgettes, and fennels.
“They’ve all got interesting foliage so if you think about interplanting those with some of the flowering plants, from late primulas to astrantias and salvias. This wonderful foliage gives you points of relief and all ties together.”
6. Create ‘picking’ paths
Instead of having a full width path, put in a path 4050cm across to give you enough space to access the plot but which is softened by the planting, he suggests.
If you have gravel, let herbs seed into it, including borage, which has a soft blue flower and will give a softening effect to usable space, he suggests.
7. Don’t alienate the cook
“A lot of people want to have barbecues and there’s always some poor old guy over in the corner doing the barbecue while everyone else is miles away. The whole principle of the Chef’s Garden is that the person cooking is looking out on to the table.
“You could build a little bench and sit the barbecue next to it, making the surrounding area more inviting.”

MOTORING NEWS
Mark Slack tells us the latest news on all things motoring.
SKODA EXPANDS PLUG-IN HYBRID RANGE
Škoda is expanding its range of plug-in hybrid offerings with the introduction of a new Kodiaq iV model, which will start from £41,935 OTR. The technology, which has been part of the Škoda range since the introduction of the Octavia iV in 2021, is being offered on the Kodiaq for the first time and comes with a significant allelectric driving range boost.
This is Škoda’s second-generation plugin hybrid system and matches a fourcylinder turbocharged 1.5 TSI 150PS engine and a three-phase permanent magnet synchronous electric motor that generates 116PS and 330Nm of torque.
As with the first-generation PHEV drivetrain, the car can be used in pure electric or hybrid modes. The motor is also used to start the engine and replaces the traditional alternator.
Pure electric mode can be used for up to 75 miles (five seat, SE model), but also gives drivers the option of using the petrol engine in hybrid mode working alongside the electric motor for longer distances.
Key to the significant improvement in range (over the first-generation system) is a larger 25.7kWh battery pack that is located under the rear seats. Equipped with integrated water cooling, the pack stores energy to drive the electric motor, accumulates energy gained from regenerative braking, and supplies energy for the heating and air conditioning compressor.
Another significant feature introduced on this second-generation PHEV drivetrain is faster charging. For the first time, a Škoda plug-in hybrid can accept a DC rapid charge. With a peak speed of up to 50kW,
it means that the pack can be charged from 10-80% in around 26 minutes. What’s more the addition of a CCS socket means that the Kodiaq iV can be charged at any public rapid charging station. As with Škoda’s previous PHEV models, the Kodiaq iV can also be charged on an AC supply via an industry-standard Type 2 plug. The maximum charge rate on AC is 11kW, which delivers a charge time of around 2hrs 30 minutes.
The new model uses the 1.5 TSI petrol engine and electric motor in three different ways that suit the selected driving mode. Drivers can change this mode by selecting the ‘Hybrid’ icon in the infotainment menu for E-mode (pure electric), Hybrid mode (the car picks the best option) and Sport mode (for maximum performance. .
The Kodiaq iV is offered with two trim level options, SE at £41,935 OTR and SE L. at £44,635 OTR. Both come with a fiveseat configuration and feature generous specification levels.
BYD REVEALS PRICES FOR SEAL SUV
Chinese car maker Build Your Dreams (BYD) has made a strong start in Europe with its three EV cars and has now revealed prices for its first plug-in hybrid in Europe. The rather strangely titled SEAL U DM-i. is a fiveseater SUV.
As with all hybrids, whether plug-in or self-charging, they are practical for longer range anxiety-free journeys. BYD say that their new SUV produces a quiet, smooth ride that feels more like that of a pureelectric vehicle, with powerful acceleration and performance to match.
Offered in two trims Design (all-wheel drive) on the road (OTR) price is £39,905 with the Boost (front-wheel drive) OTR priced at £33,205 in a choice of 4 exterior paint colours, namely Delan Black, Time Grey, Snow White, and Tian Qing.
BYD’s PHEV technology prioritises electric power with minimal reliance on fuel and comprises of a highly integrated Electric Hybrid System and a 1.5-litre Xiaoyun Hybrid Engine (two variants depending on
trim choice - Design or Boost). The Electric Hybrid System intelligently switches between EV and HEV to prioritise electric propulsion whenever possible. The engine charges the battery so electric driving is always available, with battery charge further assisted by regenerative technology.
The AWD Design version features two electric motors (150kw front and 120 kw rear and a 18.3 kwh BYD Blade battery, complemented by the in-house developed 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo powered petrol engine. When working in conjunction with the two electric motors, the maximum torque is 550Nm.
There is also the Boost trim front-wheel drive option, powered by a 1.5-litre hybrid engine producing maximum torque of 300 Nm. The single motor Boost offers an electric driving range of 49.7 miles (WLTP combined) and a total range of 671 miles when fully charged/fully fuelled.
BYD say that the interior has a premium and refined feel, and from my experience of the standard Seal EV was the case, with vegan leather upholstered seats, wrap-around multi-colour ambient lighting, crystal ‘water-droplet’ gear shift and a large 15.6inch rotatable touchscreen. A panoramic electric sliding sunroof adds a final airy touch to the interior.
The intelligent cockpit system is operated via the central touchscreen, offering smart 4G connectivity and a range of infotainment, with OTA updates. There’s a premium 10 speaker audio system and features such as Head-Up Display and Intelligent Voice Control are standard, plus two front charging points (one of which is wireless) and two rear USB charging points.
GENESIS G80 – PLEASINGLY DIFFERENT IN A WORLD OF SIMILARITY
Genesis, one of the more imaginative names for a car company, is the luxury division of Hyundai, which in turn owns Kia.
With more than a touch of the Bentleyesque in the styling, all Genesis models have the ability to immediately make you feel that you are in something rather upmarket and special. There is a real feeling of quality in everything you can see and touch with some splendid detail touches.
Along with saloons, all be they with more modern curves and sweeps rather than a traditional three box design, SUVs, both petrol and electric models, Genesis have built a comprehensive offering.
The G80 saloon line-up is priced from, for its class, a not unreasonable £43,100 and there are three trim levels with a 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol 4-cylinder engine across the range. It develops 300 bhp and is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with a classic rear-wheel-drive configuration.
On the road it’s a quiet and refined performer, with more than sufficient pull when required, and is high in the wafting stakes. All the best luxury cars make you feel like you’re wafting along in serene surroundings away from the hustle, bustle and aggravation of the daily grind. The Genesis G80 has this ability in excess. It’s no ultimate driving machine of a BMW, or Vorspurng durch technik of an Audi, more Bentleyesque. Which given some of the Genesis styling cues is quite appropriate.
Standard equipment levels are good with a basic spread that encompasses such items as LED lighting, intelligent cruise control, power adjustable steering wheel, navigation with premium sound system and connection for Apple Car Play and Android Auto, auto dimming mirrors and host of other items including comprehensive safety technology. As you might expect with such a large vehicle there is plenty of leg and headroom in both front and rear with extremely comfortable, multiadjustable seats.
Depending on what you’re driving it’s not unusual for people to engage you in conversation, but it’s rare when you’re continually about the car you’re driving. That kind of attention is usually reserved for more exotic machinery. Even though Genesis has become much better known they still attract complimentary attention.
All Genesis models draw the eye because they do look impressive in both style and stance, and in a motoring world of similarity they’re pleasingly different to the norm.
BENTLEY ENVIRONMENTAL FOUNDATION CELEBRATES FIRST ANNIVERSARY

HONDA CIVIC E:HEV - STYLING SUBSTANCE
There are many cars that have been in the sales lists for years, even decades. Cars such as the Fiesta, Corsa and Golf. One car that is arguably overlooked though is the Honda Civic, which celebrated its 50th anniversary two years ago. When launched back in 1972 it majored on maximum economy and minimal emissions, especially with the introduction of the CVCC engine which at the time beat all comers as far as reducing emissions.
In the intervening half century the latest Civic e:HEV is still following the same theme. On a journey to the North of England my test car returned an impressive 59.4 mpg even though I wasn’t trying to be a thrifty hypermiler. Unsurprisingly the one thing that has changed is the amount of technology, comfort and equipment that comes in every Civic.
The range starts from £35,005 with three trim levels – Elegance, Sport and Advance – and power from a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, petrol hybrid engine. Developing 143 PS with economy, dependent upon model, ranging from 56.5mpg to 60.1mpg and CO2 at 108g/km to 113g/km. It still fulfils that original Civic aim of frugality with fuel and emissions.
Standard fare is generous with lead-in versions having heated front seats, keyless entry and start, adaptive cruise control, Android Auto and Car Play The mid-range Sport adds such items as wireless charging and the top line Advance heated steering wheel, digital driver display and panoramic glass roof.
Mated to two electric motors and an eCVT transmission the hybrid system shifts between pure EV, hybrid and engine without needing any input from the driver. It senses the optimum drive mode that offers zero emissions in urban environments, to performance on more open, faster roads.
On the road it’s a quiet and refined drive even with the CVT transmission that can be vocal under acceleration. It’s a trait of this type of transmission irrespective of manufacturer. With nicely weighted steering and a ride that draws a near perfect line between firmness, for better body control, yet supple enough to soak up the worst of our potholed roads.
As one would expect from Honda the build quality is pretty near faultless and there’s a general feeling of quality throughout. Nice design touches include the honeycomb air vent across the facia.
The Civic is a car that will provide you with comfortable, reliable and well-equipped transport. It also looks the part, although styling is always subjective, and has that little bit of substance lacking in some more stylistically uniform rivals.

Songwriter Benny Blanco on food compliments from Yotam Ottolenghi and ‘that’ deep-fried Rolex recipe
Producer and songwriter Benny Blanco talks to Prudence Wade about falling in love with food and getting complimented by chef Yotam Ottolenghi.
If you were ever curious about how to deepfry a Rolex, you’re in luck – that specific recipe is in songwriter Benny Blanco’s debut cookbook.
Most of the ingredients you’ll have in your cupboard already – breadcrumbs, salt and pepper, Parmesan, eggs… oh, and a $16,500 (£13,000) watch, preferably gifted to you by Ed Sheeran.
“Man, this one really gets everyone,” jokes Blanco, who’s had a hand in some of the biggest hits on the radio, from artists like Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Rihanna, The Weeknd and Ed Sheeran – to name a few.
He’s also previously collaborated with popstar Selena Gomez – the two debuted their romantic relationship on social media last year, and have been hitting the headlines ever since. Blanco recently went on the talk show circuit to promote his new cookbook and opened up about his relationship on the way – talking on The Howard Stern Show about his plans for their upcoming first anniversary.
But back to the Rolex – the stunt came along randomly, when Blanco was cooking with a friend and she made the suggestion.
“We literally wound up frying a Rolex that Ed Sheeran gave me and it still works to
ABOVE
this day perfectly. Honestly, I should be the spokesman for Rolex,” LA-based Blanco, 36, says.
While he might best known for penning songs for some of the biggest names in music, among his friends, Blanco is the goto guy for dinner parties and recipes.
“My friends would be like, ‘OK, I have a date in 30 minutes – what do I cook?’ Or they’ll be like, ‘OK, it’s Thanksgiving today –can you give me every recipe?’ It’s crazy,” Blanco says.
No longer will he have to text his friends last-minute recipes, because he’s written a cookbook full of his favourite dishes, called Open Wide. Instead, Blanco says: “I just send them an Amazon link.”
Getting the opportunity to publish a cookbook feels like “my most surreal, deepest, wildest dream came to fruition”, Blanco says, and other than a deep-fried watch, the other recipes are actually edible – ranging from lamb shawarma and latkes to chicken cutlets and lobster rolls.
For Blanco, his love affair with cooking started when he was 13 years old with a George Foreman Grill, something he calls “the Holy Grail”. “One of my friends had one, and we would all go home after school and we’d gather around this man’s little grill and make these elaborate sandwiches and wraps – they’d be so cheesy – and quesadillas.
“I remember making one for a stoned group of my friends, and I remember cutting one open and giving it to my friend and looking at his face as he gasped and ooh’d and aah’d. When that happened I was like, wow, I have to replicate this feeling.
“It was a feeling of giving someone an experience and I was so drawn to it. It’s the same way in music, too – it just hit me, and I was like, I have to do something like this for the rest of my life.”
Not that he eats all of his produce himself, but Blanco teams up with US charity Support+Feed, which was established by singer Billie Eilish’s mother, Maggie Baird.
“I was with the musician Jessie Ware, she’s a very good friend of mine, and we were cooking,” Blanco remembers.
“She said, ‘I have a friend coming round for brunch’. We’re all cooking, and she said: ‘Yeah, it’s Ottolenghi’. And I was like, oh my God.
“Everyone made these huge, big plates of things, and I had no idea – I was just making a salad. When we were all eating, Ottolenghi – Yotam, he was like, ‘Oh, this salad’s delicious, who made this salad?’”
Ottolenghi ended up asking Blanco for the recipe – which was a salad made with croutons from scratch that are “buttery, white winey and cheesy – they’re delicious”.
The whole experience was “the highlight of my life”, Blanco says. “I actually died.”
Words by Prudence Wade, PA
Nowadays, Blanco appreciates the mental health benefits of cooking. “As a person who can’t sit still and my neuroses overtake me, it’s always been in my back pocket,” he says. “I urge every person out there to grab an onion and cut it, it’s like Xanax.”
He’s even taken his obsession with food a step further by growing his own produce at home in Los Angeles.
“I’ve always been pretty crazy about saving food and making sure I use every last little bit of food,” he explains.
“But when you grow something from the start of it to the end, you don’t want to throw away a stem, because you saw this thing that is your little child make its way to a big carrot. You’re like, I have to eat this entire carrot and I’m not leaving one speck of it.”
“We give the majority of the vegetables to food deserts in the LA area where they can’t afford or don’t have access to healthy, clean vegetables,” Blanco says.
“We’ve been able to do such amazing things with Support+Feed… It’s such a gratifying thing, because I’m getting to grow vegetables for myself, and I’m also given the opportunity to create these amazing experiences for families who are less fortunate.”
Ultimately, Blanco is constantly chasing that initial reaction to his food: “When someone tilts their head back and goes ‘mmmm’.”
But his platform and the circles he runs in mean some higher-profile people are trying his dishes.
Open Wide: A Cookbook For Friends by Benny Blanco is published by Dey Street Books, priced £25. Photography by Johnny Miller. Available now.
INGREDIENTS
2 red or orange bell peppers, seeded and halved
Olive oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
2tsps Dijon mustard
¼ cup balsamic vinegar
1tsp honey
2tbsp mayonnaise
½tsp truffle oil
1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved
2 (6- to 8-ounce) balls burrata or fresh mozzarella, torn
Fresh basil leaves, for garnish
INGREDIENTS
1 large or 2 medium heads green cabbage, about 3lbs
2 onions, chopped
6 cloves garlic, chopped
2tbsp unsalted butter
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
2lbs ground beef (80% fat)
¾ cup uncooked white rice
2 eggs
1 can crushed tomatoes
1 cup water
½ cup chopped golden raisins
1 cup granulated sugar, plus 1tbsp for baking
½ cup ketchup
3 lemons, juiced
1 orange, juiced
½ cup sauerkraut
½ cup white wine vinegar
½tbsp cinnamon
Burrata and caprese salad
SERVES 8
1. Preheat your broiler with the rack in the upper third of the oven.
2. Place the peppers, skin side up, on a foil-lined baking sheet. Drizzle with a bit of oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Broil until well charred. Place in a bowl and cover with plastic. Let steam for about 10 to 20 minutes until softened and cool enough to handle. Discard the skin by rubbing it with a paper towel. You don’t have to remove the skin, but it feels a little bit better to eat if you do. Slice into strips and set aside.
3. In a small bowl, combine the Dijon, balsamic, honey, mayo, and truffle oil. Whisk until well combined. Spread on the bottom of a plate or platter.
4. Build the salad on top of the dressing, sprinkling the peppers and tomatoes to fill the plate. Nestle the torn burrata into the veggies. Drizzle with a bit of olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle with basil leaves.
Cabbage rolls
SERVES 6-8
1. Remove the core from the cabbage and separate into leaves. Blanch a few at a time in salted boiling water until pliable, one to two minutes per batch. When cool enough to handle, use a knife to remove the ribs. Chop one cup cabbage and reserve for later.
2. Cook onions and garlic in two tablespoons butter and a large pinch of salt over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 10 minutes.
3. Combine beef, rice, eggs, and half the sauteed onion mixture. Season with one tablespoon of salt and some fresh pepper.
4. Add a little handful of the mixture to each cabbage leaf and carefully roll it like a little burrito, folding up the sides to create a little package.
5. To make the sauce, combine the remaining onion mixture, crushed tomatoes, water, raisins, sugar, ketchup, lemon juice, orange juice, chopped cabbage, sauerkraut, vinegar, and cinnamon. Season with salt and pepper.
6. Put a thin layer of the sauce at the bottom of a 9×13-inch pan. Tightly pack the cabbage rolls in the pan, and then add the remaining sauce. You want them to be swimming. Sprinkle with one tablespoon sugar.
7. Place a rimmed baking sheet lined with foil on lower rack to catch any drips. Bake cabbage on centre rack at 350°F (177°C) until meat is falling apart and rice is cooked, two to two-and-a-half hours. Tent with foil if getting too dark.
Baklava
MAKES 36
INGREDIENTS
3 cups toasted walnut halves
1 cup pistachios, shelled and roasted, plus ¼ cup finely ground
2tsps ground cinnamon
1¾ cups sugar
Pinch of salt
1 lemon, zested
1tsp vanilla extract
½ cup honey
3 sticks unsalted butter, melted and cooled
28 sheets phyllo dough
1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
2. In a food processor, pulse the walnuts, one cup pistachios, cinnamon, half a cup sugar, and a pinch of salt until finely ground. If you don’t have a food processor, chop the nuts by hand or put them in a ziplock bag and crush them with a pan.
3. In a medium saucepan, combine one cup water, one-and-a-quarter cups sugar, and the zest of one lemon and heat over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a low simmer and stir until the sugar has dissolved, about two minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla and honey until combined. Let cool while the baklava bakes.
4. Brush a 9×13-inch baking pan with butter. Carefully layer seven phyllo sheets into the pan, brushing butter between each layer as you build. Sprinkle a third of the nut mixture over the top. Repeat two more times, then place seven more phyllo sheets on top of the last layer of nut mixture, brushing butter between each layer.
5. Brush the top layer with a lot of butter (half a cup). Cut the baklava lengthwise three times to create four equal strips. Then make diagonal cuts at a 45-degree angle about nine times, to create thirty-six diamond-shaped pieces.
6. Bake until deep golden brown, about 35 minutes. Remove from the oven and carefully pour the syrup over the baklava. Sprinkle with pistachio dust and let cool before serving.
