The orphanage is supported by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, a charity established in memory of David Sheldrick, a famous naturalist and founder Warden of Kenya’s giant Tsavo East National Park. The orphanage’s mission is to rescue baby elephants and rhinos that cannot be reunited with their mothers. Feeling compelled to contribute to this incredible mission to protect a species, Lori and Darryl “adopted” a baby elephant named

Darryl, Lori & Sharky at CAP Event

Kimana that was found when he was about three weeks old. Kimana had wandered into a Masai Manyatta (homestead) seeking the company of their cattle. The owners called for help and a team of anti-poaching and de-snaring specialists scouted via air for a herd in hope of returning the calf to her mother. There was no sign of a living elephant anywhere within the Kimana Springs area. Kimana Springs is within the Amboseli ecosystem with Masai pastoral people who have peacefully coexisted with elephants for a long time. However, the Masai landowners have recently leased land to agricultural tribes who grow crops due to the availability of water from the

springs. This new development has made the elephants unwelcome and Kimana was most likely orphaned due to this human-wildlife conflict in the area. Lori invites anyone to contact her at lorischroeder@ bigplanet.com that would like information about this charity or to donate to the trust. Far from the extreme survivalist nature of Africa, Sharky happily perfects his sporting abilities and brings lots of joy to his extended family. He seems to understand that he landed a fabulous home that fateful night at the auction and he’s enjoying every minute of it. Through their philanthropy, the

Housing Temperature Light

Screened enclosure. Direct sunlight aids in absorption of Ca+. Vitalite as artificial UV light source. Hot rock for focal heat source. * Needs a hiding place for visual security.

Hatchlings in aquarium. House older/larger turtles in large aquarium or outdoor pond. Need adequate room for sunning. Water level should be at least as deep as the turtle is long. Air and water temp. should be 70-80 degrees. UV light aids Ca+ absorption. Vitalite is artificial source.

Depend on environmental temp. to regulate their body temp. External heat sources that mimic radiant heat from the sun are preferred. Glass aquaria is common but a poor insulator. Plastic-coated wood is better. Humidity very important. Balance ventilation with sufficient water.

Diet and Feeding

Juvenile – Daily feedings. Older Iguanas – 2-3 x/week. 1 part protein (tuna, cooked chicken, scrambled eggs) 2 parts vegetables (broccoli, Swiss chard, spinach) Vit / mineral mixture added. Rabbit pellets. Standing water source, spraying water on artificial plants.

For the most part Water Turtles are carnivorous (meat eaters). Water turtles must be fed within the water daily or 3-4 times a week depending on age and size. Feeding within the water will contaminate the environment so routine cleaning required. Commercial diets available: Purina Trout Chow. Live or killed fish (guppies, bait minnows) should be offered whole.

Should be based on snake’s normal feeding strategy. Most eat mammals. (Python, Boa, Rat, Corn, etc) . Diets consist of rats, mice, gerbils, rabbits. Best to train snake to eat stunned, dead, or thawed frozen prey. Insect eating snakes (Brown, Ring-necked, Green) should be fed crickets, mealworms, earthworms. For all snakes, fresh water should be provided at all times. Provide container large enough for soaking.

Hygiene

Cage floor can be covered with butcher paper or indoor outdoor carpet. Cage must be kept fastidiously clean. NO PineSol or Lysol.

Filtration system is necessary to maintain optimum water quality. Adding small amounts of vinegar to maintain a water pH of 6.0-6.5 may help keep bacterial counts low.

Remove feces daily. Thoroughly clean weekly. Use a freshly prepared solution of 0.15% or one in thirty dilution of sodium hypochlorite (household bleach).
