W

hat do dogs and ballerinas have in common? Other than some dogs and ballerinas being “pointers” (or in the case of my dog, a “spinner”), Houston is about to

experience the newfound connection between the two. An intricately choreographed fundraiser benefiting the Houston Ballet, known to many as the Nutcracker Market, begins November 12 at Reliant Center and this year’s theme is sure to be a crowd pleaser for canine enthusiasts. In the tradition of year’s past, the Chairperson for the Nutcracker Market has the privilege of choosing the theme for the event. The 2009 Chairperson, Gaylon Gullquist, didn’t hesitate to choose dogs when her year to direct this mega-shopping extravaganza arrived. Aptly titled “Puttin’ On The Dog”, this year’s Nutcracker is “goin’ Muttcracker” as famed artist Jim Tweedy’s Friendly Doggies series embellishes everything from the invitations to the t-shirts worn by the volunteers at the event. “I just had to choose a theme of dogs, which I love, when I happened upon Jim’s art a few years ago at the Reliant Dog Show”, says Gaylon.

Bits & Bites Fighting Tartar and Bad Breath:

Removing plaque and tartar has taken a step toward prevention. A gel applied weekly helps prevent bacteria from attaching to teeth: OraVet Plaque Prevention Gel. Apply via applicator to pet’s teeth and gum line. Cost: $25 - $30 for package of 8 applications. Available at most Vet Clinics (purchased our trial gel at Southwest Animal Clinic, 4570 Bissonnet).

Custom Flower Essences For Your Pet:

Kim Shotola of The Lightfoot Way will create Bach Remedies for your pet ($25). To determine your pet’s need, Kim conducts a muscle testing session from a photo you provide. You may find your pet has nutritional needs, could benefit from calming remedies or may have other health issues that could be diminished by natural remedies. www.thelightfootway.com.

Eliminate “Pet Eye” in your photos:

Pet eye is the reflection from your pet’s eyes in photos that can appear in different colors including red, green or yellow. Using a flash is the culprit. Try these tips for better photos: • Try not to use a flash. Use additional light sources in the room. • Stand farther away from your subject. • Shoot from an angle, so that the flash does not fire directly into your pet’s face.

Want to keep your dog off the sofa or your cat off the counter? Invisible Fence ® Brand has indoor solutions too! No more baby gates, closed doors or overturned garbage cans.
