f ever there were an industry changing at warp-speed, fragmented in the eyes of the consumer and totally overwhelming with so many product choices, the pet food business would be the hands-down poster child. Just a few decades
ago, there were only a handful of dog and cat food brands in the form of moist canned food and extruded pellets (kibble). Today, pet owners can choose from moist, semi-moist, dry kibble, frozen, freeze-dried, raw, breed-specific diets, sizespecific diets, ailment-specific diets, all natural ingredients, supplements, treats and so forth. How do we make sense of all these choices and figure out the nutritional needs of our pets? Enter the pet food dude, Reagan Stevens. Armed with decades of knowledge and an intense passion for quality and customer attention, Reagan has been educating consumers about nutritional choices and helping to advance their pet’s health and well-being through his relentless pursuit of “the best food for your individual pet”. As owner of Premium Pet Products, a Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi distributor of Natura Pet Products (makers of Evo, California Natural, Innova, HealthWise, Mother Nature and Karma), Reagan spreads the gospel of feeding quality pet food
This trademark painting adorns the walls of Animal Tales and was created by Michael Huggins depicting Reagan’s dog “Butch” and co-worker Tracy’s dogs “Madison” and “Toby”. Jim Tweedy’s art is also plentiful in Reagan’s collection.
to his many retailers across all three states. When asked about his philosophy for his pet food distributorship, Reagan quickly responds, “The quality focus at Natura is intense and at Premium Pet Products we echo that same attention to providing only the best products to our customers. We distribute several other products such as treats, stainless steel bowls, organic shampoos and so forth and we are unwavering that ALL products we distribute have to be top notch.” Pet nutrition is truly a “big bowl” of information to digest. When Reagan begins explaining food ingredients in terms of the good and bad as well as the elements of metabolism, fat intake, energy, protein sources, digestion, absorption, immune system and so forth, his passion and knowledge of the subject are undeniable. If you’re willing to listen, he’s willing to teach! With a degree from Texas A&M in Community Health & Wellness and working experience in the human food service industry, Reagan has what one might call an “unintentional” background that provided a great building block for his current expertise in pet nutrition. He notes that building his pet food distributorship happened by chance and he grew the business from a “side business where we literally started out delivering pet food to homes” into a substantial player in the market. Not only does Reagan teach consumers one-on-one at retail locations, he also conducts nutritional seminars at veterinary clinics. The growth of Premium Pet Products was based on several factors including Reagan’s passion for helping each customer solve issues regarding their pet’s overall health, his hard work ethic and the quality of the product he was distributing. “In my opinion, Natura is unquestionably the finest manufacturer of pet food in the U.S. today, if not the world”, he says with a charming yet direct delivery of his thoughts. Why is he so declarative? Reagan goes on to detail how Natura’s manufacturing process works, the certifications they have attained (Natura is the only pet food manufacturer in the U.S. to receive ISO Quality Management compliance and they have also received AIB superior rating certification and organic production certification, among others) and the quality standards set by Natura themselves that consists of 121 quality control checks that each product must pass before the food is shipped. “I believe the same thing Natura believes. This isn’t just pet food. It’s the foundation for your pet’s long-term health and that’s why we are a good partnership. We both want to set the benchmark”, notes Reagan. Houston PetTalk Magazine

how many animals are euthanized each year due to lack of available homes. According to The Humane Society of The United States, six to eight million dogs and cats enter US shelters each year, and three to four million of those are put down. If you plan on breeding or showing your pet in the future, and have the financial resources to purchase from a high quality breeder, then a pedigreed cattery or kennel may be the way for you to go. However, if you are searching for a pet to be your companion, and you have your heart set on a purebred pooch or purr baby, you can still take advantage of the fulfilling opportunity to save a life by adopting a rescued animal.
