Annual Double Issue: January / February 2010

Editorial

I

t’s a New Year and at Houston PetTalk we are celebrating a new look and many new opportunities to connect with our readers in 2010. I’ve always enjoyed the “freshness” of a New Year…it’s a chance to try new approaches, change up something you’re tired of or even start with a clean slate. This year is going to be our best year yet and I encourage all of you to email us your ideas and let us know what we can do to make your experience even better with our brand (info@houstonpettalk. com). Part of Houston PetTalk’s fresh start for 2010 is a minor “facelift” of our magazine design, ushered in by our designer, Andrew Burwell. We thought it would be fitting to have Houston’s most famous plastic surgeon, Dr. Franklin Rose, give us our official send off into the new year with our “rejuvenation”! Dr. Rose, along with his wife Cindi and their

two children, Ben and Erica, share their family pets with us and talk about the importance of supporting animal charities. Our January issue is the only double issue we produce each year, otherwise, you’ll find us on the shelves every month! As this issue takes us into Valentine’s Day, our product guide is full of “sweet things” for your pet so be sure to stop by and shop with our advertising sponsors. Without your support of our area businesses, PetTalk would not be possible. Purchasing their products and services is the key to our continued mission of bringing the latest pet news, events, photos, education and charity support to the Houston community. I’m sure you have all recognized the cultural shift in our country toward “getting back to nature” and protecting our resources. Yes, we all love our modern conveniences but

it’s also very grounding just to watch a Cardinal land on a fence post and look for food. With our need to be eco-conscious and feel a part of the natural elements of our earth, we have launched a new section, Back To Nature, in order to bring you the latest information, products and ideas that help you and your pet stay connected with the things that really matter. In this issue we also offer a travel idea. If you are a wine lover and a “whine” lover, take your pet on a wine tour...see the details on page 30. We are looking forward to a great year of publishing Houston PetTalk and houstonpettalk.com as well as sponsoring area events, participating with other media to reach the pet community and making our city more pet friendly. We invite you to join us for the ride! Best wishes for a successful, fulfilling New Year from all of us at Houston PetTalk.

appy New Year from your loyal hound about town! 2010 is going to be a “spark”tacular year. First, just the year 2010 sounds like it has to be remarkable. When I was a young pup, we thought that by year 2010, we would have colonized the moon and humans would be our pets. We missed on the moon thing but I know plenty of my four-legged compadres that “own” their human. 2010 is a big year because Houston PetTalk is turning 10…that’s 70 dog years in print and from what I hear, it’s even more in magazine years! We have a big anniversary issue planned for later in the year…I’m already shopping for a dress (it takes very little incentive for me to make a trip to Gone To The Dogs And The Cat Too to have Susie create a one-of-a-kind habiliment…yes, I know my big gal

status makes off-the-rack a challenge and no, I do not hold it against her that she works in a place that services felines). I live by the mutto: party for no reason but if there is a reason, then really party! So, I’m hatching a plan for a soiree that will be the pièce de résistance of the party season (yes, I just got back from the famed City of Love…I learned a few phrases but mostly I uttered: Pierre, Pierre, ton amour est précieux comme l’or…well, maybe with today’s price of gold that was a bit of an exaggeration but that’s a minor detail in the throes of passion!). Now that I’m back from my “lovely” vacation, I’ve made my annual New Year’s Resolution List. I figure sharing it with my devoted readers will perhaps give me the added pressure of actually trying to stick to them.

Here’s the reveal: 1. Work harder to achieve my resolutions. 2. Drink less bottled water to save the planet. Toilet water has some good attributes..it’s free. 3. Be nicer to cats 4. Stop meddling in my cousin Henry’s love life. I advised him to lick his plate after dinner on his last date and also offer to lick hers as an act of consideration. I haven’t heard from him since. 5. Exercise more. I think I’ll walk to the Salty Dog three times a week instead of two. 6. Stop looking for love in all the wrong places. Walmart is overrated anyway.

The Man With

H

ow do you launch a “facelift” of a magazine? After much “noodling” on the subject, I thought it would be fitting to invite one of the most renowned plastic surgeons in the U.S. that resides right here in the Bayou City, Dr. Franklin Rose, to help us kick off our new look. I have met Dr. Rose and his family at numerous pet-related events over the years and I thought with his connection to animals and his extraordinary eye for transforming things into a more beautiful version of its former self, he was the man for the job! As you have hopefully noticed, our “look” has changed to reflect the start of a new decade and also to celebrate Houston PetTalk turning 10 in 2010! Reaching a 10th anniversary in the world of print magazines is quite an accomplishment and we are thankful to our advertising sponsors (we wouldn’t be here without them) and our loyal readers. We would love to hear from you regarding our “facial rejuvenation” and any ideas for content that you would like to see in this coming year.

In collaboration with our design team of Andrew Burwell and Desiree Walton, we did a few enhancements, augmentations and reconstruction to give you a fresh new face for 2010 and beyond. The cosmetic makeover was not the only impetus behind the changes. We wanted to give you, our reader, an editorial style of more information “bytes” for quick readers while still maintaining the integrity of more informative and detailed articles. Lastly, our culture has become more focused on getting back to nature with holistic approaches to health and eco-conscious products and practices. To that end, we have created a new section called Back To Nature. You will also continue to see interesting travel editorial, product previews, compelling feature stories and local resources in support of Houston’s pet community. We hope you enjoy the new face of PetTalk and we thank Dr. Rose and his two-legged and four-legged family for giving us a great send-off as we sail into 2010!

rotations in med school, I was fascinated when I encountered cosmetic surgery. It was a way to combine my medical knowledge with my love of art.” It has been said that the best plastic surgeons are those who have an artistic ability, hence one of the reasons Dr. Rose is so well respected in his industry. Born to be a doctor is how I would describe Franklin Rose. He grew up in Colorado and followed his older brother’s footsteps to medical school. “I loved medicine but I also had a great appreciation for art. nature and animals. He, along with his wife Cindi, his son Ben and his daughter Erica, have had a plethora of furry creatures throughout the years including dogs, cats, turtles (not so furry!), rabbits, ducks and horses. But the pet that really stole his heart was a Golden Retriever named Napoleon. “When my big brother went off to college, my parents thought I needed company given that I was only 13 and would be at home for a few more years. They got Napoleon and we were inseparable. He lived to be 14 years old and he passed away when I was in med school. It was years before I could bring myself to have another pet”, says Franklin. But alas, as all pet lovers do, temptation and heartstrings take over and we find our selves “pet parents” once again. He and Cindi decided to get a Maltese because their young daughter Erica wanted something to cuddle. “Puff”, as she was called, passed away a few years ago at the age of 18. Hmm…is there some anti-aging property in the Rose’s water? As a surgeon, Franklin is nationally renowned, board certified and oversees his own plastic surgery practice and medical spa. He has

been featured on Dr. Phil and MTV’s I Want A Famous Face. His achievements are too numerous to mention but a few endeavors deserve the spotlight. First, he and Cindi created the Rose Ribbon Foundation in 2005 to provide free reconstructive surgery to post-cancer patients who are not able to afford health insurance. Dr. Rose performs dozens of surgeries annually. In addition to the Rose Ribbon Foundation, Franklin has donated his surgery expertise on many other occasions for which he was awarded the “Marvin’s Angel” award for charitable surgery numerous times. He is also involved with the American Diabetes Association, Houston Grand Opera, Houston Ballet, the Human Rights Gala and Citizens For Animal Protection.

Meet Cindi Rose

Talented and giving, Cindi is an accomplished artist, very active in charitable causes, a champion of the environment and nature and most that know her are well aware of her amazing cooking abilities. Yes, she prepares unbelievable creations every day for her family’s meals.

Dr. Rose relaxes with Shayna and Hampton

Most recently, Cindi began writing a column on beauty and health for Absolutely! In The Loop magazine. Her advice is always centered around respecting nature, never harming animals (no products developed using animal testing are allowed in Dr. Rose’s spa, Utopia Med Spa) and finding the balance and healing properties of the natural elements. One of the most notable aspects about Cindi is that she is a distinguished silhouette artist. She has been creating beautiful silhouettes since she was a young girl, all the way from Houston to Hollywood and Disneyworld. She has produced silhouettes for Elvis, Queen Elizabeth, Barbara Bush, Peter Fonda and others. Always aware of those in need, Cindi creates Silhouettes For Survivors through the Rose Ribbon Foundation and she also creates pet silhouettes and donates a portion to charity (see inset).

Meet Ben Rose

Charming and effervescent, Ben is in law school but his real challenge right now is his 7-monthold Goldendoodle, “Hampton”. Ben is quite a proud father but as puppies go (especially big

ones), Hampton is rambunctious and full of energy. After our photo session and many funny antics from the big golden boy, all agreed that Hampton would benefit from a few training sessions but that he was destined to be a great dog. And, we think Ben is destined to be a great lawyer too!

Meet Erica Rose

Erica has always been a pet lover and she laughs as she explains the numerous pets she has somehow managed to talk her parents in to over the years. Her current love is Shayna, a five year old King Charles Cavalier. Currently in law school with an intent to utilize her skills in the entertainment industry, Erica spends time in L.A. where she has been involved with animal charities including the Amanda Foundation and the Cesar Millan Foundation. Here in Houston, Erica and Cindi competed in the TV reality show “The Great Raise” where they won the “raise” part of the contest raising the most money for charity and they have both been honorees at the Citizens For Animal Protection Gala.

Silhouettes by Cindi Rose Cindi is one of the preeminent silhouette artists in the U.S. To have a silhouette created from your pet’s photograph, contact Cindi through her website, www.silhouettesbycindi.com. A portion of the proceeds go to Citizens for Animal Protection.

Pawprints On Our Hearts… Forever

Compassionate Pet Memorial Services By Michelle Mantor, Photography by Evin Thayer

Catherine Dalrymple, Founder Paws Memorial Service, www.pawsmemorialservice.com.

O

ur pets introduce a dimension into our lives that cannot be filled by a human. Many of us find this element unexplainable but we just “know” that we get a sense of comfort from our pets. They love us no matter what, they give us something to love in return….and they are loyal to the end. For all of the immense joy and love our pets bring to our lives, one day our furriest family member is gone from our daily routine. No more evening walks, no more cuddling on the sofa, no more endless ball throwing sessions. Where there was once affection and laughter, there is now emptiness and sorrow. In the not so distant past, the bridge of support needed to help us through the process of our pet’s passing was virtually nonexistent. After euthanization, we struggled with what to do and where to go. Today, new services in “aftercare” embody the more integrated role of pets in our families. Enter Catherine (“Cay”) Dalrymple, founder of Paws Memorial Service, who knows the importance of pets in our lives and recognized the need for another level in aftercare. She felt in her heart that the personal touch was missing and she wanted to offer all the comfort and peace of mind possible so owners could walk away knowing their “special baby” was treated with the utmost care. “We are not just taking care of a dog, a cat or a bird, we are taking care of someone’s family mem-

ber. The personal touch is of utmost importance to us”, says Cay. Not only did Cay strive to create a memorial service that is an outstanding facility with a warm, welcoming environment….but she succeeded beautifully. Situated on almost 20 acres just south of Sugar Land, Paws Memorial Service offers a peaceful setting, a sympathy garden and a premier facility replete with a comfort room, books and grief support materials and a wide selection of urns and keepsakes to honor the memory of a pet. When I first traveled to Paws Memorial Service to meet Cay, I was intrigued by what type of person would have the ability to deal with such a sad process. I must admit I was a bit uneasy on my way to learn about cremation and the realities of transitioning a once vibrant family member to the finality of ashes. With my dog in her final chapter of life as well, I couldn’t help but think of myself going through this situation in the very near future. Meeting Cay is like meeting sunshine when you expect rain. Her smile and kind demeanor belie her true gift for comforting a troubled soul. There is not a shadow of a doubt that her motivation for helping us through a difficult time is empathy. All I could think was “thank God for people like Cay because without this invaluable service in our community, our choices and thus our experience would be very diminished.” Cay’s story is one of life leading us to destinations that we don’t plan

or foresee. She grew up on a small horse ranch and followed many family members in obtaining her degree from Texas A&M. With a love of outdoor life and dogs always by her side, she and her husband Alick fulfilled their dream of owning and operating a full service training and boarding facility. In 1997, they completed construction and opened Parkland Kennel in Richmond, Texas. Everything changed a mere two months later when Alick suddenly became ill and lost his life to a brain tumor. Cay was left on her own, with the demanding schedule of a new business and kennel life along with raising their then 3 year-old son Ross. “The high demands of the industry on weekends and holidays became a huge sacrifice for Ross,” notes Cay. Though a very tough decision, Cay eventually sold the kennel in late 2006 so she could devote more time to her son. Thus began the next chapter of Cay’s life. With a passion for animals in her blood, Cay knew her calling was still in the animal realm. She also had a huge understanding and compassion for people during a time of loss….she had been there so many times herself. “After the loss of my second border collie, Ellie, I knew for sure that I wanted to build an aftercare facility above and beyond what I had found available; I wanted to build the nicest, most welcoming facility with an open door environment in support of the pet owner. It was a long process, but we are finally here,” says Cay. Houston PetTalk Magazine

“We try to focus on the help we can give to pet owners in dealing with their loss. It is very devastating. People want to know they have provided the best for them to the last; they want to know someone is handling them with care. So often, they want to tell us their story and we are here with ears to listen and shoulders to cry on. Giving that time and lending a helping hand is what makes our work meaningful to us. We want to help make a difficult journey a little easier, preserving their good memories forever.” Paws Memorial – Catherine Dalrymple

The stated mission of Paws Memorial Service is quite simple: “Caring, compassionate, professional people providing the finest pet aftercare services available with dignity and respect.” Whether they are providing the service to veterinarians on behalf of pet owners they may never meet or directly to the pet owner as is sometimes the case, the highest standard of care and attention to every detail is provided. At Paws Memorial Service, an open door policy is maintained for the comfort and ultimate peace of mind needed by so many. Cay explains, “There are absolutely no secrets in what we do. We want pet owners to trust and feel good about the process and manner in which their pet is taken care of.” After visiting Paws Memorial and touring the facility, I was curi-

ous to understand how the “process” unfolds and what a pet owner could expect in this time of grief. Cay explained that Paws Memorial Service is always available to pickup from a pet owner’s personal veterinarian or they often meet owners at their homes. Even when the unexpected happens after hours or on a Sunday, they will make arrangements to assist people with their loss, 7 days a week. Cay also went on to explain that a pet owner can choose to come to the facility and stay to witness their pet’s cremation. “People want to tell us their stories. They want us to know who we are taking care of and what they meant to each other.” The waiting room and sympathy garden area were incorporated into the plan for just that purpose...a place to listen and provide comfort. In addition, Paws Memorial Service offers an array of options for preserving the memory of pets from beautiful and unique urns to stones and other keepsakes. Some options include a pet’s pawprint in clay or one-of-a-kind individually turned wooden urns signed and numbered by the artist. In addition to helping grieving pet

owners, Cay also strongly supports animal rescue. Finding homes for animals at local shelters is always on her “to do” list and she has carried this passion into her business plan. Part of the profits of Paws Memorial will always go to animals in need. “It seems only natural, like the ‘Circle of Life’, that out of the loss of a pet that has been so loved can come good for one who has not been so fortunate.” Saying “good-bye” is never easy but with a service like Paws Memorial, you can gain comfort in knowing that you can trust them to handle your pet as if it were their own. If you are ever in need or want to inquire about their services, contact them at 281.342. PAWS (7297) or visit them on the web at www.PawsMemorialService.com. Cay, thank you for all you do…. thank you for your understanding, your strength that holds us up as we falter in sorrow and the tears on our behalf that you can’t deny. And, thank you for giving a little piece of your heart to everyone that passes through your doors, both human and animal.

eekend trips are always a nice break from the rigors of city life. Next time you’re thinking about a “road trip”, you might consider a “whine” trip with your pet. Ranked second only to the Napa Valley by Orbitz, The Texas Hill Country Wine Trail (THCW ) is a local gem for wine lovers and yes, even the pets that love them. Playing host to wine tastings is what THCW vintners do best but that doesn’t mean there isn’t more to explore. Take advantage of the many seminars, demonstrations and tours offered at the THCW. Taking a journey with friends, family members or pets to the Texas wine region would be a fun trip to put on your to-do list for 2010. The beauty of the Hill Country is what keeps five million annual visitors coming back for another glass, not to mention the beautiful wildflowers in the spring. To give you a head start on where you and fido might wander to, we’ve put together a map of wineries that allow leashed pets on the property. We called each winery individually to get their policy on pets (the list is not comprehensive so there may be other wineries that allow leashed pets), but that doesn’t mean things can’t change so before you head out, it might be wise to verify pet policies at wineries as well as hotels.

Mandatory Spay Neuter Laws Enforceable or Practical?

ouston we have a pet overpopulation problem. As a leader in animal euthanization, Houston is not only trying to get a leash on BARC, but also find a solution to the underlying problem. The Humane Society notes that in six years, 420,000 new births can result from two breeding cats and their offspring and 67,000 puppies can result from breeding dogs and their offspring. These numbers, lax animal control policy and irresponsible pet owners has resulted in a safety and health crisis in Houston. An influential force in December’s runoff election, the mayoral candidates vocalized their stance on spay

and neuter initiatives. But, just how far will they go? Discussed as a viable option under the White administration, adding Mandatory Spay and Neuter Laws to Houston’s animal control legislation are among the most controversial methods of addressing the pet population problem. The proposal, modeled after the statutes enacted in Los Angeles in 2008, would make the failure to alter your pet illegal, punishable by both fines and criminal charges. Yet, many are asking, “Is this really a reasonable solution?” The City of Houston is not a big spender in terms of animal care and control. We appropriate significantly

less funding than most other cities, making it difficult to enforce even current regulations (not to mention the privacy concerns and accusations of intrusive governmental legislation that have some up in arms). On the other side, the focus is on the power of the message. Claiming spay and neuter legislation will influence the public, proponents say the law’s mere existence will encourage many individual citizens to take responsibility for the health of their pets, regardless of its enforceability. Speculation aside, one thing’s for sure …Houston is due for a major chan=ge. What we’ve been doing isn’t working.

Have Pet, Will T Feeding “On The Road”

W

ith new sights and smells, travel can be both exciting and overwhelming for your pet. Whether you’re heading out for a weekend road trip or journeying from the air, traveling with your four-legged best friend can be an adventure for everyone. For your peace of mind and your pet’s comfort, preparation is key in traveling. Before you hit the open road, check out these useful tips so you can plan and pack for your pet.

Feeding a Traveling Pet

Going into “foreign territories” is stressful for even welladjusted pets and can lead to drastic appetite changes. Animals are instinctively cautious about eating in unfamiliar surroundings. This reduced appetite cannot only affect bowel movements and energy levels, but even a pet’s overall health. Maintaining her caloric intake should be a primary focus for you. Make every bite count and travel armed with a tasty diet of foods that are just too good for a pet to pass up. Feeding a highly palatable, highly digestible diet can be helpful in overcoming a reluctance to eat. It is important to introduce your animal to any new foods before heading on your trip. Establishing good eating habits at home weeks prior to a vacation will allow ample time for your companion to adjust. Foods that are higher in protein and fat are generally more palatable than foods higher in carbohydrates. Therefore, selecting a low carbohydrate food like EVO® is a simple solution. For many brands, carbohydrate levels are not typically listed on packaging, but can be roughly calculated by adding all the percentages for protein, fat, moisture, crude fiber, and ash, and subtracting the total from 100%. The remainder is an approximation of the percent of carbohydrate in the food. Dry foods with less than 18% carbohydrate for dogs and 12% for cats would be considered low in carbohydrate. Canned dog and cat foods with less than 2% carbohydrate would be considered lower in carbohydrate.

No-sweat Ways to Stay Hydrated

Hydration is also imperative for pets to avoid overheating when traveling by car or plane. To beat the heat, provide your dog or cat with frequent access to fresh cool water. This can be challenging when pets are physically separated from the rest of their traveling companions, such as on an airplane. In these situations consider using water bottles that can be licked. But remember to train your pet to use them before your trip. A more convenient way to help with hydration is to feed

canned food. The greater water content in canned food (up to seven times as much as dry food) can help meet a pet’s water needs and reduce how much water it needs to drink. Plus, higher moisture foods are often more appetizing to pets, encouraging healthy intake.

Treating While Traveling

The more comfortable and satisfied a pet is during the trip, the more enjoyable the entire experience will be for everyone. Help your companion understand that traveling is fun. Provide treats at different points in the trip and make plenty of rest stops to stretch and discover new sights and smells. When packing snacks, choose ones from home that are easily stored and that come in a variety of shapes and flavors. These special pleasures will train your pet to enjoy the ride. As responsible pet parents, it’s up to us to select the right pet food for every occasion but it is always good to check with your veterinarian before starting your pet on any new feeding plans. With a little planning, new experiences, sights and friends discovered while traveling can be exciting and fun for both pet lovers and their companions. Sean Delaney, DVM, MS, Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition, is a board-certified veterinary nutritionist and Chief Medical, Scientific and Nutrition Officer of Natura Pet Products, manufacturer of EVO, California Natural, Innova, Karma, HealthWise, and Mother Nature natural pet foods and treats.

Homeopathy Complimentary Therapies for Health

H

omeopathic remedies can be literal life savers for your pet in emergency situations. I carry with me a Homoeopathic Emergency Kit containing 38 commonly needed remedies. Included in this kit are remedies to counteract allergic reactions such as bee sting; distention of the stomach such as bloat and a precursor to torsion; ejection of foreign bodies such as splinters, glass or the stinger from a bee; heat stroke and epileptic seizures to name a few. Homeopathy is based on the philosophy that “like cures like”. For example, Apis is a remedy made from extremely diluted

bee venom. It will counteract symptoms that display the same as an allergic reaction to a bee sting, whether that reaction is from a bee, shellfish or some other substance. Rather than opposing or suppressing the symptoms as is done with traditional medicines (think boxing), a homeopathic remedy stimulates the body’s natural

40 www.houstonpettalk.com

defenses, working with the body to overcome the cause of the symptoms (think martial arts). Improvement is typically very swift and the resultant cure deep. If an incorrect remedy is chosen no harm will be done, but no cure will be effected either. Although its principles have been referenced in medical documentation since Classical Greek times, formalized homeopathy was brought to us in the late 1800’s by German physician Samuel Hahnemann. Hahnemann became disillusioned with traditional medicine as he believed that its cures were

crude and some of its strong drugs and treatments did more harm than good to the patients. Two documented “provings” of his philosophies are particularly astounding. In the winter of 1812/13, Napoleon’s army was retreating across Europe and had lost the battle of Leipzig, which is where Hahnemann lived. He treated 180 cases of Typhus in the stragglers and towns-

people and only 2 died, one of these an old man. When an epidemic of Cholera broke out in 1831, a student of Hahnemann treated 154 cases and lost 6 (3.9%). Orthodox doctors treating 1500 cases between them lost 821 (54.7%)! The goal of homeopathy is to not merely treat disease, but to cure it. Veterinarians are typically led to homeopathy by a frustration with the chronic and recurring nature of so many problems seen in their practice. The American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association (www.ahvma. org) is a resource to locate a homeopathic veterinarian in your area. Two good books to add to your home library are “Homeopathic Care for Cats and Dogs: Small Doses for Small Animals” by Don Hamilton, DVM and “Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for

Dogs & Cats” by Richard H. Pitcairn, DVM, PHD & Susan Hubble Pitcairn. Crista Meyer is co-owner of Urban Tails, a pet care facility in Midtown. Three years living with her pets in a 3rd world country inspired her to learn all she could about pet health and nutrition. She is passionate about encouraging others to learn all they can in order to provide best for those pets in their care.

Go Green With Greener Pup Beds

K

ari Whitman’s Greener Pup, the signature line of stylish, eco-friendly dog beds created by Kari Whitman, are taking the eco-friendly pet product sector by storm. Kari is a trendsetting interior designer to the stars such as Jessica Alba, Katherine Heigl, Denise Richards, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Kristen Bell. It is really amazing what Kari Whitman’s Greener Pup does – not only do they help pampered pooches reduce their carbon paw-print (each bed contains 70-120 recycled plastic bottles as filler, and is covered using the luxury fabrics from high end home projects, which otherwise would be headed to landfills), but 100% of the proceeds go to the Ace of Hearts Foundation, www. AceofHeartsDogs.com, Kari’s nonprofit which is dedicated to saving shelter dogs on the day they are to be euthanized and placing them in loving homes. There are four beds to choose from with many fabrics, avail-

able in sizes S-XL. Kari is a HUGE advocate for environmental preservation and lends her time to numerous environmental causes. She

has been a correspondent for Extra and has appeared on The Today Show, Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood, Inside Edition and Hollywood Green. She is a regular columnist on Pet Friendly Design in Dog Fancy magazine and is also writing a book about animal and ecofriendly design. Check out the beds at www.greenerpup.com.

PlaqueOff

A

ccording to the makers of Plaque off (who are right here in Houston!), Plaque off is the second best option against plaque and tartar (the 1st one is everyday brushing). Triple Pet Plaque Off is an all-natural solution to bad breath and tartar. It contains Yucca, an herb that promotes better digestion, thus enhancing breath. Yucca also remains in the pet’s mouth so that when food is chewed, it will rub the yucca against the teeth helping with the removal and prevention of plaque. Triple Pet Plaque Off is easy to use. Just poor a cap full into your pet’s drinking water bowl every time you fill the bowl up, and that’s it! Available at all Houston locations of Natural Pawz. Visit naturalpawz.com for info.

Learn the Number One Behavioral & Health Issue in Pets By: Kim Shotola The Lightfoot Way: www.TheLightfootWay.com

D

id you know that the #1 ultimate cause is stress? It affects animals just like people. If an animal is stressed out, it can lead to behavioral problems or health conditions. So what is the key to a healthy pet? First, think of your pet on a holistic level as a whole emotional, mental, physical and spiritual. You need to look at your pet’s needs on ALL levels, not just the surface. Secondly, if you want your pet to live a happier, healthier and longer life, you start with prevention. Do whatever you can to remove stress from their life. It can be as simple as not putting food bowls near one another or adding another litter box. Look at their environment carefully. Or maybe you are stressed and your pet is reacting. Next, take a look at their diet. Your pet can be allergic to one ingredient. They may need a grain or lactose free diet or can eat only certain proteins. A healthy pet can handle stress better. If the basic diet is contributing to their health issues, then no matter what else you do for them, it may be just a temporary fix. Muscle testing is the best way to find the ideal diet and amounts. And lastly, take a look at what you can do to help your pet become and stay a happy and healthy animal. Consider natural methods such as reiki, animal communication, flower essences, aromatherapy, homeopathy or massage. While holistic methods can help prevent behavioral and health issues, they can also help resolve them by getting to core cause. They are never a replacement for proper veterinary care but are a compliment to it. For more information on this subject, visit the Natural Pet Health Blog at houstonpettalk.com. A Beach Club For Dogs? A Unique Boarding Experience Awaits Your Pet

R

ummy’s Beach Club is a new dog facility in Spring, Texas that offers customized dog boarding for dogs who need a little extra love, attention, physical fitness, activity, brushing, cuddling, training, massaging - extra anything. At Rummy’s, DOGS ARE NEVER ALONE! They have a 24/7 human dog buddy, a private bedroom with ceiling fan, window, TV and sleep in a king or queen size bed alongside their dog buddy. During the day, dogs go for walks, swim in the pool, play in the dog park, get basic training, brushed and massaged, have movie time and get lots of attention from their dog buddy. Plus – if you board your dog for 3 days or more, you may be eligible to receive free transportation for you to the airport and for your dog to Rummy’s! You can also bring your dog to Rummy’s Beach Club for private one-hour warm water swim sessions. Rummy’s pool was custom designed for warm water canine fitness - a safe, clean way for dogs to stay in shape after surgery, after intense rehab at your vet’s facility, to lose weight, increase endurance for agility or flyball

or just to have fun! Rummy’s pool has NO STEPS in or around the pool and you can park right next to the beach entry. And owners can swim with their dogs! Water exercise is more powerful than land exercise because water has more resistance than air. In addition, the hydrostatic pressure of water is a natural diuretic and anti-inflammatory,

the buoyancy of water decreases the strain on the body and warm water creates a calming ‘sedative’ effect on our muscles and mentality, reduces pain and inflammation and increases muscle flexibility – naturally. Lisa exercises the dogs with safety in mind.

So, who is Rummy?

Rummy is a blind Siberian Husky who won the 2007 Nationwide Purina Rally to Rescue contest. In 2006, Rummy wandered the streets of Houston blind, starving and bald from mange. A Houston SPCA Canine Special Investigator rescued Rummy, Husky Haven gave him the medicine, food, shelter and love he needed and entered him into the Purina contest which took him to Hollywood, California where he kissed a movie star, won the contest and $5,000 of dog food for the dog rescue that saved his life, got adopted by his foster mom, Lisa Goebel, and together they recently opened a new business, Rummy’s Beach Club, LLC. Since winning the Purina contest, Rummy and Lisa go to schools and libraries to talk to kids about dog and animal rescue, hoping to make an impact on children’s futures. Lisa shows slides of Rummy in a luxurious Beverly Hills hotel, in Hollywood kissing Emily Procter and winning the contest. She also shares photos of Rummy on the streets of Houston, starving, bald and blind. At the same time, the children are petting and kissing the very dog society “threw away”. It makes an impact; the kids experience animal compassion right then and there and hopefully are discouraged from getting involved in dog fighting or abusing animals in the future. There is no charge for Rummy to come to your school or library. Call today to schedule an appointment for your dog at Rummy’s Beach Club or to have Rummy visit your school, library, Boy or Girl Scout troop, bible school class or team meeting.

undraising efforts are underway for Bow Wow Boot Camp, an innovative program that will focus on finding permanent homes for dogs from the Fort Bend County Animal Shelter, as well as teaching skills to young people in the Juvenile Leadership Academy (JLA) of the Fort Bend County Juvenile Probation Department. The program is one of the first of its kind in Texas. “For some of the kids and the dogs, this program will be the first exposure ever to unconditional love,” said Mary Gready, Supervisor of Special Programs, Fort Bend County Juvenile Probation Depart-

ment. She added that the juveniles in the program will gain valuable skills—responsibility, daily routine, patience, compassion and accomplishing goals—that will help them become productive members of the community. The shelter dogs chosen for the program will be behaviorally tested and selected by Fort Bend County Animal Control. After being vaccinated and spayed or neutered and microchipped, the animals will recover at kennels that will be constructed at the Fort Bend County Juvenile Detention Center. Afterwards, selected juveniles in the JLA will be responsible for the daily care of the dogs and participate in their obedience training alongside a trainer for six weeks. At the end of the training period, the juveniles will assist in promoting the dogs for adoption to a permanent home. Gready said before the initial dogs can be selected for the program, the kennel construction, subject to mandatory state regulations, must be completed. The kennels will be an of-

ficial foster care extension of the Fort Bend County Animal Shelter. “We are analyzing ways to cut costs, but our initial fundraising goal is $47,100,”she explained. The program will accommodate six dogs during each six week training period. Each dog will have a kennel with indoor and outdoor access. A program similar to Bow Wow Boot Camp has been met with great success in Williamson County, Texas. Programs in Dallas and Brazoria Counties are also under consideration.

PREPARE FOR BABY

Baby’s Coming

FUN

Preparing The Dog For Baby’s Arrival

By: Laura Koch Meadowlake Pet Resort Lodging Mgr.

in the doorway of the nursery or train your dog to stay out of the room, start this early. Either way, he should be allowed a chance to investigate the room first. Purchase a c.d. of baby noises and play it regularly for the pet. Allowing them to hear these sounds before the baby’s arrival will help the dog (and you) get used to the added noise that will soon fill your household. Purchase a small doll or wrap a blanket up and act like you are holding a baby several times throughout the day. Monitor how the dog reacts to this situation. Does he still try to jump on your lap? Start redirecting his behavior now. Every time he jumps, firmly say “no” and give him a dog toy to play with instead. The dog needs to understand that it is not play or cuddle time when you are holding the baby. This will also help your pet adjust to the decreased amount of attention that he may receive. If this experiment goes poorly, it is a very good time to enroll in a professional training class. Keep up with your pet’s regular

behaviors such as sit, come, stay and lay down. These behaviors will be needed often as visitors come and go to see the new addition to the family. Keep in mind that positive reinforcement is the best way to train your dog and ensure the retention of his behaviors. Praise him for all the good things he does and make sure that he knows he is part of the family…but not the only part! Prior to leaving the hospital, bring home a blanket or piece of clothing that smells like your newborn. The dog should be able to smell this before meeting the little one. When you do come home, mom should enter the house without the baby in arms. Typically mom has been away from the house the longest and your faithful companion will want to greet you and will appreciate being allowed to do so. With patience, solid training, attention to detail regarding routines and an early introduction to the sights, sounds and smells of the new baby, the stress of bringing baby home should be kept to a minimum.

H

aving a baby is an exciting and stressful time. Preparations include many alterations to your house and your routine, which can be quite confusing to the family dog. Their reaction to these changes can include everything from being possessive over the new baby to lashing out at you or your precious little one. However, there are many ways that you can help prepare your dog for the addition to come. Discuss with other members of the household how things will change once the baby arrives. Will someone else be responsible for feeding or walking the dog? Will the dog’s sleeping location, food bowls, toys or other items be moved? If so, gradually start the changes now. By the time the baby arrives, the dog will be accustomed to the new routine. Stock up on necessary pet supplies, so you don’t have to worry about it later. As you bring new baby supplies into the house, allow the dog to sniff and explore them. If you decide to put up a baby gate

FACT S everal months before the due date, make sure that your dog is up to date on all vaccines and is current on flea and heartworm medications.

LIL’ BITS GO FOR THE GOLD

Going For The Gold ABC Pet Resort Achieves Exclusive Accreditation

A

BC Pet Resort & Spa recently achieved recognition for completing the Level II facility accreditation program through Pet Care Services Association (PCSA). This designation is given to businesses that maintain very high standards in pet safety as well as staff training and facility operations. Suzanne Locker, owner of ABC, announced that the North Houston pet resort reached Level II Gold Accreditation after holding the Level I PCSA accreditation since 1997. ABC Pet Resort is one of only eight pet care facilities in Texas that is accredited by PCSA, and the only Level II resort!

The program contains over 250 standards in 17 separate areas of pet care facility operations, management, and customer service. Detailed information must be submitted to PCSA regarding operations, animal care procedures, and business policies. In addition, there is an onsite inspection of the facility by a trained evaluator. Houston pet owners should feel extremely proud that “one of our own” has achieved such a distinctive accreditation. ABC Pet Resort has shown a desire to increase their knowledge and understanding of pet behavior so that they may better serve our community and individual pet needs.
