Leader of the pack Creating Great Dogs With Cesar Millan By Michelle Mantor, Photography by Todd Spoth, toddspoth.com

www.houstonpettalk.com
Are you often at odds with your dog? Do you want him to stay and instead he jumps on you with muddy paws? Does he pride himself on relandscaping your yard? Are you hoping for a mannerly “sit stay” when the doorbell rings and instead he jumps on your guest, covers them with slobbery kisses and “sniffs” in inappropriate places?
H
mm. These scenarios are familiar to many dog owners and if your dog rules your house, then we invite you to sit,
stay and read about the man who has changed the face of dog and owner relationships, Cesar Millan. Recognized by the moniker, “Dog Whisperer” from his hit TV show with the same name, Cesar has become the darling of dogdom with a success story that is inspirational and an impact that is no less than cosmic in the world of dog training. Understanding that the antics of many well- intentioned, healthy and sound-minded pets have landed them in animal shelters, Cesar brought an awareness to pet owners that bad situations can be turned around by rehabilitating the dog and training the owners.

Most of this list seems self-explanatory, right? Well, it is but there are many pet owners who struggle with following these leadership behaviors. Cesar notes “Many of my clients call their dog their soul mate or their baby, but the dog tears up the furniture and drags them all over the neighborhood on a walk. Why doesn’t the dog listen when the owner begs, cajoles or offers treats to get the desired behavior? Because dogs are dogs, not humans. In the wild, dogs don’t need humans to achieve balance. They have a pack leader, work for food, and travel with the pack. But when we bring them into our world, we need to help them achieve balance by fulfilling

He explains, “animals do not speak through words; they communicate through constant energy… the ‘beingness’ of who and what you are at every moment. Dogs sense energy from other dogs or humans when you enter their space. So our dog acknowledges our mental state because we are constantly projecting energy.” The obvious lesson here is to think about your mental state when you are with your dog and what you are projecting. You must see yourself as the leader and project that image with your energy. Again, project a calm, assertive demeanor. The other important thing to remember about a dog’s energy is that each dog has energy that can be classified into one of four levels. Cesar notes, “Dogs have natural energy that is very high, high, medium and low.” In addition to energy levels, dogs can also be dominant or sub-

Cesar’s Tips: Find a canine solution.
Often, the solution we would use for a human is totally wrong for solving a dog’s issues. For example, when a human sees a scared or nervous dog, he or she will first offer comfort and consolation. This would never happen in the animal world and can make the problem worse instead of better, because it reinforces unstable behavior. Speak the animal language. When dogs come into our homes, they meet emotional energy for the first time. We shower them with affection and babble at them in high-pitched baby-talk, so they see us as excited energy. This is why many dogs don’t listen to their human caretakers. Their mothers never acted this way; where did that calm-assertive leadership go? Treat your dog like a dog. We often develop a different agenda for our dogs. We want to make puppies our babies. From day one, many humans forget to fulfill and understand their dog’s needs and instead project their own needs and desires on the animal. Be the pack leader! In the absence of a clear leader, a dog, even a submissive one, will seek to fill what they see as the vacant leadership role. The dog will ignore the owner, act out, and can lead to serious behavior issues.
