who was an artist and her family owned a prestigious private school that concentrated on art and art history. From designing cars to comic books to fashion, the Hamann’s genetic propensity for art has left a tremendous legacy in the world and as Kiki likes to say “It’s my God -given currency”…and she spends it well! Kiki’s family eventually moved to Canada and she later went to college in NYC, adding to her international experiences. When I asked Kiki how she would describe herself as an artist, she noted, “I have walked many venues and paths in the art world. I am a published writer and illustrator, a recorded singer, a sculptor, a syndicated comic strip creator, a miniaturist, a fashion designer, a fabric designer, an interior decorator, a restaurant concept designer, a painter, a canine couture designer and I have a movie script sold to Hollywood which will hopefully become a movie soon.” But, although Kiki has been blessed with so many talents, she also notes that when she was a young girl, her talents were misunderstood and she was placed in a special needs classroom. She adds, “I can't separate the artistic processes. I like to say I write with images and I design with words...my art crosses boundaries, frontiers and is definitely multi cultural.” So how did this beautiful artist find herself designing not clothes but FASHION for 4-legged divas? A dog that wandered into her life of course! A little Chihuahua became Kiki’s companion and in turn, her art took a new direction. You might say the petite chien named “Nina” became Kiki’s muse. Kiki reflects on her newfound passion: “I spent hours creating for her and re-creating her with passion. It was my objective to create Dog Products that reflected my personality and nothing on the market reflected who I was. At the time, there was no canine couture. Products were typically made of cheesy nylon patterns. Well, this Kiki would not go for that. So I created my first Dog Bag for myself and Nina. It was an immediate hit and it Photos by UKMCBO
sold on the spot. My approach has always been different, I am not a dog designer, I create for humans that have dogs. After all, the furbabies need to be comfortable and safe. A new career was born and from this date I have made thousands of bags and each single one unique, hand crafted and sold!"
CALLING HOUSTON HOME - TWICE As a young mother twenty years ago, Kiki moved to Houston where some of her family was living. She found the city full of Houston PetTalk Magazine

warm people with a nice vibe and ambiance. Wanting to raise her boys near family, Kiki made Houston home where the boys would be reared with the values that a family environment creates. Eventually the boys grew up to be nice men and Kiki’s career took her to Miami, a city where Fashion is foremost and the media duly notes the fashion focus. Miami was certainly good for Kiki and her brand, as she gained international fame for her couture products. When asked how her fame came to be, Kiki notes, "I can't say I had just one big break as many things happened at the same time. The world understood my canine couture as Fashion and so I was featured in several fashion magazines with my bags and my dog apparel. One of the first publications to notice my work was the Financial Times of Germany. I was featured among Gucci, Tiffany, LV and was highly recommended. At the same time I was an invited speaker at the Luxury Living Show in Norway.” And, to add to the glamour, the Gucci family came across her work and commissioned her to design for their Chihuahua “Prickly”. “It was quite an honor to be the designer of choice for this iconic family. We developed and incredible friendship and I was graced with the honor of having the Gucci’s fly from Italy to walk "Prickly" on my runway.” says Kiki. Yes, there is a bit of "luck" sometimes involved in getting a big break but behind the so-called "luck" is talent, hard work, persistence and a team of supporters. For Kiki, the most important person on her team is her husband and manager, Alex. His adept branding skills are behind the huge success Photo by Hather
of the Kiki Hamann brand. As Kiki says with a laugh, "Alex makes me the recognized celebrity that I am because without his management, I am a Houston PetTalk Magazine

would you be reading Pet Talk Magazine? Do you love to travel and often miss your pets while away? Better yet, ever wanted to walk or run miles of empty beaches with the sun on your back and a dog at your toes? If you answered yes to the questions above, then please sing along with me to the tune of Escape, The Pina Colada Song by Rupert Holmes: If you like pina coladas and gettin' caught in the sun If you like the sound of the ocean and the fun of 4 dogs If you like walking on the beach In the dunes of the Baja Then here is the spot that you've looked for, come with me and escape! Does this sound perfect to you? If so, then check out Los Colibris in Todos Santos, Mexico! We spent 10 days there in November celebrating our 17th annual honeymoon. When you feel the time is right – and you have clipped everyone’s claws – open the door and let the interview begin. Do not be discouraged by hissing, growling, back arching, or big-tail displays. This is not the Bachelorette Show; it will not be love at first sight. If Tom and Jerry manage to occupy the same room on three or four successive days without trying to give one another a buzz cut, you might begin to feel comfortable leaving house just yet. PROJECT RUSTY TRAINING FOR RESCUES
I

the professional trainers to this event on a warm Sunday morning, plus the rescue dogs eager to learn, and you have nothing short of magic. This is the mission of a group called Project Rusty, teaching dog rescue volunteers how to become trainers for the dogs in their care. It used to be that rescue groups called in trainers to help with individual dogs, troubled dogs. Now the focus is on empowering these same groups to use smart reinforcement-driven training techniques themselves, with all of their dogs. Training isn’t a luxury

Submitted By: Houston Zoo
THE HOUSTON ZOO PARTNERS WITH NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we will bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo or other local organizers such as the TWRC Wildlife Center. This issue, we are highlighting the amazing conservation photography that brings the plight of endangered species to you. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.
