NOW YOUR DOG CAN BE A SHOW DOG!

THREE EVENTS AT THE HOUSTON WORLD SERIES OF DOG SHOWS ARE NOW OPEN TO YOUR DOG — any dog, any breed, or no particular breed at all, as long as it meets the physical requirements of participation. The AKC My Dog Can Do That! event gives your pet a chance to try out an agility course while you receive training tips from professionals. In the Weight Pull, big dogs and little

dogs alike can power their way to prizes in several weight classes. And, new this year, the Barn Hunt challenges your mighty hunter to sniff

out a rat, secured safely inside a metal tube and hidden in a haystack. Please visit www.houstondogshows.com for details.

hrough the generosity of Rockets owner, Leslie Alexander, Rescued Pets Movement celebrated the

opening of The Jack C. Alexander Building on April 23rd. To the guests’ delight, Clutch, the Rockets’ mascot, was in attendance. The Building serves as RPM’s headquarters for saving thousands of Houston’s homeless animals. Through its partnership with the City, RPM has saved over 6,700 death-row dogs and cats since September 2013. Laura Carlock, co-founder of RPM, says, “The Jack C. Alexander Building will help us save many more pets because we will cut our veterinary expenses and better control the spread of illness. All thanks to Mr. Alexander.”

he official results are in for those of you anxiously awaiting the “make-up” of Juan Pablo Pickles. In January, PetTalk hosted the Show Us Your Mutt

Photo Contest sponsored by VERGI 24/7 Emergency and Critical Care Hospital and Wisdom Panel Doggie DNA Tests with the winner receiving a free DNA analysis. Houston PetTalk fan, Kristy Thackerson-Bridges, won the contest and received a Doggie DNA Test from Wisdom Panel. It took only a few weeks to arrive once submitted and the identities of her pup’s parents were definitely a surprise...So, who is the father? It turns out that dear Juan Pablo Pickles is an American Staffordshire Terrier, Boxer, English Springer Spaniel, Miniature Poodle cross. This means that one of his parents may have been half-poodle! Congratulations again to Kristy, and if you want to try out the test for yourself, visit www.wisdompanel.com.

Jungle KING OF THE

(OR AT LEAST ROYALTY IN OUR HOMES) INTRO BY MICHELLE MANTOR

L

et’s face it...cats are cool! As the most popular pet in the United States (88 million pet cats to 75 million dogs), cats are natural hunters, agile jumpers and climbers plus they are self-reliant, intuitive, quiet, possess

an excellent memory...and they are oh so clever! Over thousands of years, a new species of cat has evolved naturally making its home around people: felis catus. Today, pet, stray, and feral cats belong to this species that we call the domestic cat. Just ask any cat parent - they make the perfect pet for many: they are docile, independent, can live full time indoors making them ideal for apartments and high-rise living, they are typically less expensive to care for than dogs, they are not noise hazards to neighbors, they are not aggressive by nature, they can amuse themselves and they can also cuddle and provide companionship and even entertainment with their humorous play antics. Yes, cats are great pets and with their incredible resumĂŠ of skills, there is a reason that cats are KING OF THE JUNGLE! For our annual cat issue, we asked our readers to submit questions on our Facebook page and tell us what they most want to know. We reached out to our sponsors for answers to some of those questions. Enjoy learning some interesting feline facts! Houston PetTalk Magazine

VA CC I N E S By: Sara Kaplan-Stein, DVM, Animal Avian Hospital of the Village VACCINES: What vaccines does your cat need? The core vaccines for kittens and cats include the upper respiratory vaccine (ie panleukopenia, herpesvirus, and calicivirus) and the rabies vaccine. The non-core vaccine is feline leukemia. Overall these vaccines prevent against potentially life threatening conditions. Vaccines as a whole do not prevent against parasites, but if a kitten or cat were to become immunocompromised from one the diseases listed here, they may be more susceptible to contracting a parasitic infection. CAT POISONS: There are several common household items that can be toxic to cats. The most dangerous and usually fatal item is ethylene glycol otherwise known as antifreeze, which will cause acute kidney failure. The substance is sweet, so cats like to lick it up. Additionally many plants can be toxic to cats; however the lily tends to be the most common and can be potentially fatal depending on the species. The Lilium or Hemerocallis species are the most dangerous. Lastly, dog specific flea and tick preventatives can be fatal when applied to cats. The pesticide, Permethrin, is safe for dogs and humans, but causes severe neurologic abnormalities in cats. Please be aware of what household items that may be safe for a dog that are possibly fatal to a cat. Cats are not small dogs. Â

DESTRUCTIVE SCR ATCHING HOW DO I KEEP MY CAT FROM SCRATCHING THE FURNITURE? 1. UNDERSTAND THE BEHAVIOR: A cat doesn’t scratch to tear up your furniture, but rather a cat scratches because it’s a form of exercise for the their muscles from the claws to the legs, shoulders, and down the back. Scratching also sharpens claws, cleans the exterior sheath and leaves a scent mark to proclaim territory to other animals. Scratching is necessary and normal so with that in mind, you need to find ways to redirect the behavior, not stop the behavior. 2. REDIRECT Purchase a scratching device for your cat and

Glucose is a simple sugar that serves as the main energy source for most of your body’s cells. The body regulates glucose levels very tightly, as both too much and too little glucose can prove life-threatening. There are numerous mechanisms for regulating blood

CORAL RESTORATION FOUNDATION As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we will bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo or other local organizers such as the TWRC Wildlife Center. This issue, we are highlighting the environmental challenges coral faces in our oceans. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.

More than 75 percent of coral reefs worldwide are classified as threatened, and reefs in the Americas are among the most heavily threatened reefs in the world.

Since the late 1970s, the coral reefs of Florida have undergone tremendous declines. Two cornerstone species, Elkhorn and Staghorn coral, have experienced losses exceeding 90 percent. There are many reasons for this decline: temperature changes, emergence of human-associated diseases, collapse of sea urchin populations, pollution, physical destruction, ocean acidification and food web changes brought about by human activity. Though corals are proven to be survivors over the long term, having existed in essentially their current form for many millions of years, they are declining rapidly and may disappear almost completely in the next century if they are not afforded special protection and assis-
