C

ome one, come all to the canine extravaganza that dog-loving Houstonians flock to every July: the 38th Annual Houston World Series

of Dog Shows at NRG Park. Billed as one of the largest dog shows in the United States, dogs of every size, shape, breed, color and skill will enter the various rings hoping to perform their best and wow the crowd at the show July 15 - July 19. Over the last 38 years, the show has continually added more events to make sure attendees are never disappointed. This year, the show is taking it up a notch adding two new events. First is the Barn Hunt which is open to any dog. This competition tests the hunting skills of canines as they sniff through haystacks to locate a live rat secured safely inside a metal tube. A second new event is Creative Dog Grooming. This mesmerizing exhibition showcases the talents of extreme dog groomers as they scissor-cut their dogs into works of art. Show Chair Tom Pincus explains, “We are always striv-

ing to bring new aspects of the dog world to the attention of the public to help them be more appreciative of the joy that dogs bring and more responsible pet owners.” Of course you will want to see the established events such as conformation (breed judging), agility, obedience, flyball plus exhibitions, shopping, art exhibits, designer doghouse competition benefiting CAP Shelter (see page 22) and much more! Find out all about the show here in PetTalk - map out your schedule and be sure to visit us next to the Meet the Breed ring for past issues, games and all the information you will need to have fun…it’s showtime! When you watch a dog show on TV you typically see only the Variety Group and Best in Show judging. So how does the judge evaluate the Great Dane vs. the Maltese? Each breed has a standard approved by their respective parent club. This standard specifies what the dog should look like; how it should gait, the texture and color of the coat and any disqualifications. The dog should also be in good condition. The challenge for the judge is to interpret the standard and find the dog that best typifies that standard. The difficulty comes in the fact that rarely does a single dog have all of the ideal characteristics and the judge is forced to weigh one dog’s strengths against the other competitors. Breed judging is the cornerstone of dog shows and has been around since 1876 making dog showing one of the oldest sporting events in the U.S. Many people think of conformation as a “beauty contest” but it is actually an evaluation of how closely a particular dog adheres to breed standards. Thus, the purpose of conformation is to evaluate a dog’s characteristics and determine which dogs could best be used for breeding.

ONFORMATION HOW THE JUDGING PROGRESSES The judging in conformation is a series of single elimination contests. Each breed has a winner’s dog and winner’s female and Champions competing for Best of Breed (BOB). Each BOB competes in their respective variety group for Best in Group. The seven Best in Group winners compete for Best in Show (see page 34). The Best in Show winner is the only dog that was undefeated that day. At the Houston World Series of Dog Shows there are three separate shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with no overall winner for the weekend. The breed judging divides males and females who are not champions into several classes. The males compete in classes, such as Puppy, American bred, Bred by Exhibitor and Open. The winner of each class then competes for winner’s male dog. The process

is repeated for females. Each of the winners receives points towards their championship. The winner’s male and female then go back into the ring and compete with the Champions for Best of Breed. The Best of Breed winners then move on to compete in one of the seven variety groups. The judging for individual breeds takes place for most of the day. Judging starts at 8:30 am and individual breed judging is usually complete by approximately 2 pm. Variety Group judging starts immediately after breed judging is complete followed by Best In Show.

Dog shows are a process of elimination, with one dog being named Best in Show. Only the Best of Breed winners advance to compete in the Group competitions. Each AKC-recognized breed falls into one of seven groups: Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, NonSporting and Herding. Four placements are awarded in each group, but only the firstplace winner advances to the Best In Show competition. The seven groups include:

SPORTING

These dogs were bred to

hunt game birds both on land and in the water. The breeds in this

group include Pointers, Retrievers and Setters. HOUNDS These breeds were bred for hunting other game by sight or scent. These breeds include such dogs as Beagles, Bassets, Dachshunds and Greyhounds. WORKING These dogs were bred to pull carts, guard property and perform search and rescue services. Among the breeds in this group are the Akita, Doberman Pinscher and St. Bernard. TERRIER This group includes breeds such as the Airedale, Cairn Terrier and Scottish Terrier. Terriers were bred to rid property of vermin such as rats. TOY These dogs were bred to be household companions. This group includes the Chihuahua, Maltese,

34

Pomeranian and Pug. NON-SPORTING This diverse group includes the Bulldog, Dalmatian and Poodle. These dogs vary in size and function, and many are considered companion dogs. HERDING These dogs were bred to help shepherds and ranchers herd their livestock and includes the Briard, Collie and German Shepherd Dog. Finally, the seven group winners compete for Best In Show.

AGILITY

Agility involves a human “handler” directing a dog as he races around an obstacle course soaring over jumps, diving through tunnels, zig-zagging between weave poles and climbing over A frames and seesaws. It’s fast, fun and great exercise for both the dog and handler. The agility competitions are held in the rear section of Hall B Friday-Sunday from 8am to 4pm.

Houston PetTalk Magazine

OBEDIENCE Obedience competition might not have the action-packed, fast-paced vibe of Flyball, but it requires a great deal of skill and patience in its own right. Obedience trials showcase dogs that have been trained and conditioned to behave well in the home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs. AKC trials and tests allow exhibitors and their dogs to enjoy companionship and competition as they earn AKC titles. There are three levels of competition: 1. NOVICE - where dogs complete exercises such as heal on leash, stand for examination, recall and long sit and stays. 2. OPEN - where dogs complete exercises such as heel free and figure eight, drop on recall, broad jump, retrieve over high jump, longer sit and stays. 3. UTILITY - where dogs complete exercises such as signal (no voice) exercises, scent discrimination, directed retrieve, directed jumping and moving stand/examination.

FLYBALL

Flyball is for the super fast rock stars of the canine world! This high adrenaline sport appeals to dogs that take the "fetch drive" into overdrive. There are two racing lanes set up side by side with two teams racing 4 dogs each. The competition is based on speed and precision. Dogs race down a lane consisting of 4 jumps spaced 10 feet apart. The dogs trigger a Flyball box at the end of their racing lane, retrieve their tennis ball, and race back over the four jumps to the start/finish line where they pass the next dog headed out to run the course. The dogs run at top speeds with some dogs completing the pattern in less than 4 seconds. The team to finish first with all the dogs running the course correctly wins. Flyball competitors can be any breed, just like rock-n-roll “mutts. No pedigree required. Just skill and passion! Get ready to rock as you watch these speed demons in action in Hall A.

SHOW HE

Generally, the events take place in two categories, Conformation (breed judging) and Performance which includes Agility, Flyball and Obedience. In addition to the competition in these sports, there will be exhibitions to demonstrate particular sports such as Canine Frisbee™ and Canine Musical Freestyle. A few new additions include My Dog Can Do That! (see page 41) Barn Hunt which will allow dogs to test their hunting skills and Extreme Grooming, featuring top groomers transforming their pooches into elaborate works of art right before your very eyes. Other events to watch for throughout the show include Meet The Breed where curious spectators can meet the owner/breeder of many different breeds of dog and ask questions, touch the dogs and learn more about their characteristics. The Student Art Exhibit showcases super-talented student art plus the Weight-Pull Competition challenges the pulling capacity of dogs. Next, watch the hand-clapping, foot-stomping musical exhibitions of Flying Frisbees and Dancing Dogs at various times on Saturday and Sunday. Between all of this excitement sits McScotty Market - “streets” of shopping for your pleasure. Pick up a copy of the schedule as soon as you enter the arena from the information booth so that you don't miss any of this canine extravaganza!

STUDENT ART CONTEST There may be no better way to celebrate the love of dogs other than through

expression of art. Recognizing this value of art, D. Mari Jon Filla envisioned a student art contest for the dog show back in 1989. She brought her idea to life and although she passed on in 1995, the student art contest is still an important part of the show. See the displays of great talent including the winners throughout the dog show!

WHAT’S NEW AT THE SHOW?

BARN HUNT: Certain dogs are bred to hunt everything from bear to ducks. Yet other hunting dogs have a less glamorous though equally practical purpose. For the first time, the show offers dogs bred to hunt rats -- and those just naturally talented at it -- a chance at glory. The rats are safely enclosed in metal tubes and are not harmed in any way. The Barn Hunt is composed of three separate components. Rat N Gos, Hands-on Mini Clinic and the BHA Fun Test (the official, fullscale Barn Hunt Association event for serious ratters). See the schedule at www. houstondogshows.com or visit www.barnhunt.com for more general information.

CREATIVE DOG GROOMING New Event: This mesmerizing exhibition showcases the talents of extreme dog groomers equipped with colored chalk, hair spray and an overabundance of imagination, as they scissorcut their dogs into works of art and weirdness. Check out this new addition to the show, held in Hall B immediately behind the information booth.

DO THAT! AN

MY DOG C

AKC® My Dog Can Do That! This event was well received by show attendees and is back again this year! For non-registered dogs, the event invites all dogs of different breeds and mixes to test their skills in agility without the pressure of a real competition. With the help of professional coaches, attendees can have their dogs run a condensed version of the agility courses that “professional” agility dogs face. There is no additional cost beyond paying admission to the show and the event is open to all dogs as long as they are 6 months old and on a regular 4-to-6 foot leash.

• Keep all alcoholic beverages sealed or out of reach of your pets. • Only apply sunscreen and bug spray that is rated for animal use. • Always keep fire starting tools up high where pets cannot access. • Keep your pets on their normal diet. Even a minor change can give your pets indigestion and diarrhea. • Do not give glow jewelry to pets or leave them alone with it. • Keep citronella candles, insect coils and oil products out of reach. • Never use fireworks around pets! • Noisy, crowded fireworks displays can cause a lot of stress to your pets, so please resist the urge to take them to the festivities.

EAR INFECTIONS MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

D

id you know that ear infections are one of the top reasons that dogs visit their veterinarians?

Most owners may start to notice symptoms such as scratching of the ears, head or neck and shaking of the head. Ear infections, also known as otitis externa, can also cause redness of the ear flaps or a smelly ear discharge. Unfortunately, in some cases, pain is noted at home when the ears are touched. If any of these symptoms are present, your pet may require medical attention by a veterinarian. It is important to remember that ear canals in dogs are much longer than in people, so just looking at the opening of the ear is not enough. To determine if your pet may have an ear infection, a veterinarian will look in each ear to examine the canals and the

When choosing a dog, it is a very important first step to understand the amount of time and leadership required for any breed. You wouldn’t put a newly licensed driver behind the wheel of a powerful sports car like a Ferrari nor is it a wise choice for the first time dog owner to try and lead a breed not suited for their level of experience, unless they have absolute professional guidance as well as the personality type for that breed. Choose the right dog for your personality and experience level and this will help ensure the dog's success as well as your enjoyment with your new companion.

MAR ALLIANCE SHARK AND RAY PROJECT

As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we will bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo or other local organizers such as the TWRC Wildlife Center. This issue, we are highlighting conservation of marine animals. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.
