WHY DOES MY DOG PANT WHEN HE SHOULD BE COOL INDOORS?
- MRS. CLEMANS For dogs, panting is a means to cool off. Dogs are not able to effectively cool off after activity by sweating so panting is their mode of staying cool. A dog at rest may pant for reasons including discomfort, anxiety or may be resting after play. If this is unusual for your pet, seek a veterinary evaluation.
WHAT PEOPLE FOOD SHOULD I REALLY AVOID SHARING WITH MY PET?
- MRS. ORREGO
Feeding human foods to pets is risky. Some important foods to avoid are high fat snacks including trimmings such as off steak or ribs as well as desserts including chocolate. Why does your dog pant? And why the wet puppy nose? Ask your pet questions for Dr Jennifer Hennessey at Facebook/AnimalERnwh to see if answers you have been curious about appear in our column each month!
Mugs Rescue Squad and Boston Terrier Rescue will be attendance. The first 200 registrants will receive an event t-shirt, goodie bag, and a FREE night of Lodging at Rover Oaks Pet Resort. All proceeds go to the homeless pets at the CAP shelter. Visit cap4pets.org to register.

tions are printed below and only the candidates’ answers are printed on the following pages.
1
One of the most pressing questions on the minds of animal advocates in Houston is our severe pet overpopulation problem. According
to AVMA, 600K to 1.2M stray animals are roaming our city streets annually; many are in pain, poor health, or run in dangerous packs. Our city faces animal welfare issues as well as public safety issues. Recently, BARC opened a low cost spay and neuter clinic and partners with Emancipet, SNAP and Friends for Life to provide free spay and neuter in low income neighborhoods to combat this problem. Although this is a step in the right direction, this effort is not substantial enough to address the problem. What would your solution

The improvements to BARC have been outstanding since it was put into the Administration and
Regulatory Affairs Department. The 80% live-release rate reported recently is the direct result of the hard work by the department’s employees with adoption events around the city and work with rescue groups that foster pets and transport them to Colorado for adoption. Providing low-cost spaying and neutering, along with educating the public about its importance, has also made a difference. As Mayor, I want

BARC can expand its current efforts. Like cities across the country, Houston is experiencing severe budget challenges. Our animal
welfare efforts need additional resources to be maximally effective. Given the tough budget climate, I believe that the city should seriously explore partnerships with private groups to provide needed

resources. I support increased education and public awareness around animal welfare and pet care is-
sues. Mahatma Gandhi said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. We face serious overpopulation and animal cruelty challenges as a city. Addressing these issues with our young people is one way to lay a strong foundation for future improvements on these issues.

W
hen you arrive at Pelican Reef Villas Resort (PRV) in San Pedro, Belize, you will notice the luxurious resort grounds, the gracious staff and the resort’s proximity to the beach. However, guests who walk past the resort’s cascading infinity pool may spot a personable and happy hound named Duke; PRV’s rescue dog and frequent visitor. When I visited Belize 10 years ago, I fell in love with the country and recently joined the property management company for PRV. I became a managing partner and I brought along my lifelong commitment to abandoned animals from Texas into this unique Belizean property. As a native Houstonian, my passion for protecting strays began in my hometown, but has turned into a personal mission against a global issue. I have rescued, fostered, chaired and been a board member of numerous animal rescue organizations for the past 20 years . As a Board member of Houston PetSet, an organization dedicated to making a difference to animal welfare-related nonprofits, I became aware of the ever increasing issue of abandoned pets; not only in my own local communities, but in other countries as well. No stranger to homeless animals, Belize offers up plenty of opportunities to rescue and PRV stepped in to help with their first rescue, India. Rescued as a puppy, India was with PRV family throughout the property’s development. She quickly became a staple around the resort through her unique personality. She would make her way to guest’s doors or tables just in time to greet everyone for breakfast and would run up and down the pier alerting guests when fish were nearby. As
40
www.houstonpettalk.com
India aged, she was diagnosed with cancer and we made the decision to move her back to the U.S. where she lived out her final days. India is very much missed and she began a tradition we have continued to support. Upon arriving to Ambergris Caye Island, I also began to notice the mistreated and hungry street dogs in other parts of the city outside of the property. Of the 200 Belizean islands, Ambergris Caye is the largest and leaves many dogs abandoned and stranded on the island after being brought in from visitors. As a board member of Houston PetSet, I quickly teamed up with SAGA, the Humane Society in Belize so that I could also begin helping my fourlegged friends on the island. SAGA is a non-profit, non-governmental organization whose mission aligns with my own vision of rescue and is also PRV’s main local charity. I met Duke through my connections with SAGA. He had been brought in from the U.S. to assist with hunting but was abandoned thereafter. Our newest addition, Yoshi, was not well cared for by his owner and would often escape and find his way to Pampered Paws, our local doggy daycare on the island. His owner eventually surrendered him to Pampered Paws and spent over a month at Fort Dog, SAGA’s shelter on the island. Since then, Yoshi has made his way to a nurturing home at PRV. In adopting these two rescues, I realized SAGA’s mission and its importance on the island. Based in a developing country, SAGA is limited in resources but through incredible volunteers, hard work, and dedication, the organization has been able to provide a humble shelter. SAGA is
currently in the process of building a new shelter with an adoption center. In addition to its shelter, Saga sponsors adoption programs, humane education campaigns as well as spay/neuter procedures and the island’s only nonprofit veterinary clinic. At PRV, we are committed to supporting animal rescue both in Belize and Houston where we raised over $12,000 for Houston PetSet in 2014. In addition to supporting the local shelter in Belize, we are also dedicated to changing the attitude towards animals. With the support from patrons raised through promotions and partnerships on the island, we continue to assist Saga in their mission. In particular, we offer special rate vacation packages throughout the year, with a percentage of the proceeds donated to SAGA. Our mission at PRV is to provide guests with the ultimate vacation experience while visiting our property, but we also support our local pet charities’ missions both in Houston and Belize to propel important changes. At home in Houston, I’ve had the pleasure of helping Stella, one of my most recent rescues, through my longtime volunteering and support of Lucky Dog Rescue. Stella is from BARC Houston and has been brought back to health. She is now ready for a loving permanent home. Please visit www.luckyrescue.org for additional information. Stay tuned for specials benefitting SAGA through our website at www. pelicanreefvillas.com and Facebook. If you plan to stay with us anytime soon, don’t be surprised to find Duke or Yoshi lounging poolside. These resort pets love to give animal-friendly guests a small comfort away from their own pet companions.

Tail End The Gift of Unique Art Just In Time For The Holidays
G
iving is an art form in itself, so this year we encourage you to give the gift of art to
someone you love...especially if they love pets! Artwork captures the essence of the individual or subject matter and can convey our feelings and thoughts in a way a photo cannot. Art can be whimsical, realistic, vibrant or even humorous. As the holiday season approaches, consider a custom work of art or a print. It’s a gift that keeps on giving and one that will never be forgotten. Here are a few of our favorite artists!

PALM OIL PRODUCTION AFFECTS MULTIPLE SPECIES

As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we will bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo or other local organizers such as the TWRC Wildlife Center. This issue, we are highlighting conservation of several species such as orangutans that are affected by the production of palm oil. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.
alloween is right around the corner, which means lots of candies and chocolates for
trick-or-treaters. You are probably familiar with the idea that there are ingredients in our food might not be healthy for humans, but what if some ingredients pose a danger to animals? Palm oil is a common ingredient in everyday items like candy, chocolate, shampoo, snacks, and lots more. It is found in so many products, there is a good chance that you have already eaten or used something with palm oil in it today! Because palm oil can be so widely used, the demand is rapidly increasing, and that means farmers need more land to keep up.
