APRIL 2016 Annual Media Hounds Issue
Editorial
W
elcome to one of my favorite issues of PetTalk - our annual Media Hounds issue where we feature local media personalities and their pets. This tradition began 4 years ago with KHOU’s David Paul as our cover model. David is one of the biggest animal lovers I know. He and his wife are constantly rescuing a stray animal. Whether it be a kitten in a storm drain or a dog wandering around the streets, he steps up to save animals in need. His story led to the idea of featuring local media personalities in PetTalk because so many of them are animal enthusiasts. Plus, through their voice, TV presence, or written word, they help communicate important information to our city regarding animal related issues. We figured this is a great way to say thank you to our Media Hounds while letting our readers learn more about them and their furry friends. This year we are excited to have KHOU News Anchor, Greg Hurst and his dog Grissom on our cover. Plus look inside to find out who else

is showing off their pups on page 26. One of the reasons I particularly like the Media Hounds issue is that it gives me an opportunity to meet some very fascinating, successful and truly kind people in our media community. I'm always amazed at their schedules. They often get up in the middle of the night to go to work and I'm so impressed that, not only can they function with such odd hours, but they do it so well! I hope you enjoy reading their Q&A's. Speaking of helping our pet community, check out the article from Fort Bend County Animal Services who have an innovative program helping pets find forever homes after being taught skills by youth in the Fort Bend County Juvenile Probation’s leadership academy. What a win-win for everyone! Check out the story on page 54. Also in this issue, we have great health related articles. From a common killer in our pets, heart disease, to a very obscure but deadly disease called Pythiosis, find out how to identify symptoms of these diseases to keep your pet safe and healthy.
Meet Greg & Grissom KHOU Anchor Greg Hurst and his sidekick Grissom pose with editor Michelle Mantor for our annual Media Hounds issue. The backdrop is a fabulous mural on display at CityCentre, just in front of The Lofts. See our feature for more creative murals plus other media hounds and their pets. Photos by Evin Thayer. Special thanks to The Lofts at CityCentre management for allowing us to "hang out" in their gorgeous lobby due to inclement weather. PS...if you are looking for a swank place to call home, they allow pets !
Next, don't miss the biggest doggy party in town, PetTalk's Doggy Party on the Plaza, April 2 at CityCentre. Mayor Turner will be joining us as parade Grand Marshal and we will have over 70 vendors, entertainment, and contests. Find out details at www.doggypartyontheplaza.com. Being a pet owner is great fun and brings so much joy. But one of the more difficult aspects of pet ownership is finding the right services or products. We are here to help! PetTalk is launching a new tracking service that will help you find resources in your neighborhood, complete with reviews, events, classifieds and more. The project is in its infancy and new listings will be added regularly. Watch www.houstonpettalk.com for details in April. Plus, get out and take those photos in the wildflowers and enter our biggest contest of the year (see page 23). We publish all entries! Texas wildflowers are beautiful, as are all animals, so don't miss a chance to capture them both in a keepsake moment.

Henrietta On:
O
ccasionally Dragon Lady has words that come out of her mouth that actually have some value. Those words would NOT be “clean your room” or “dessert should only be eaten once or twice a week”. However, the other day, I was lamenting some things I don’t like about the rules in our town and DL said, “Henrietta, complaining is like mouth farting. I don’t mind hearing my own but I don’t want to hear anyone else’s.”
14
www.houstonpettalk.com
What??!! Dragon Lady actually farts? I couldn’t believe my floppy ears. After I got over the shock that DL is not the model of perfection she appears to be, I started thinking about how she is right, complaining is draining. If I really feel that strongly about something, then I need to take action. Hmm…what to do? Well, there’s no place to get good advice on how to proceed better than a fat chewing session at the Salty Dog with cousins Harold and Hubbell. By the way,
I don’t think you’ve met my cousin Hubbell yet. The family tries to keep him on the Down Low because, let’s just say, he hasn’t won any academic awards. If Hubbell was in a car heading toward a brick wall, he’d be arguing about where to sit. However, in his defense, he smells good. So, we are scarfing down the best hot dog wiener appetizer this side of the Mississippi at the Salty Dog as I lay out my grievances of the local government:
1. No public bathrooms. I get so tired of waiting on the Fitzwald’s oak tree. The line is ridiculous. If we had private bathrooms, no one could see how high you pee on the tree and everyone wouldn’t feel the need to show off at the most popular spot in the neighborhood. 2. Subsidizing Mike the Mastiff for laying on the couch and not working. Yes, I understand laying on the couch is a god-given right in some dog’s eyes, but who is going to make

tennis balls, flea meds and red wine if no one works? 3. Regulate This! (picture the middle digit on my front paw waving in the air). Seriously, government - mind your own business. Some of the regulations that annoy me the most include a limit on squirrel chasing except between 5am and 7am which stinks because I’m not nocturnal. Next, our owners take pictures of us humping our toys and then snapchat it and we can’t even sue for invasion of privacy. I could go on forever. “Henrietta, we get that you hate the government. No other entity can compress the most words into the smallest ideas better than a bunch of overpaid, corrupt, self-serving, hypocritical, slow-walking, government talking-heads. But what are you going to do about it?” Wow. Harold is so eloquent. “Henrietta, I agree. I’m sick of the U.S. government. I’m thinking of moving to California. Do you want to come with me?” Hubbell, not so much. “Good question cousin H’s. There is only one thing I can do and that’s to run for office!”, I pledge. “How fast do you have to run, Henrietta?” I need not tell you who said that. Yes, that's the ticket! I'm throwing my hat in the ring for President. Why

waste time running for Mayor when you can lead the entire nation? I ponder my platform and of course what I'm going to wear. I decide to focus on what I do best to get rid of the other candidates and then once I have the world watching, I can mold minds. You may not know this but my secret weapon is that I'm a dance machine. Yes, I know you're having a hard time visualizing but it's true. So I get to work on my choreography for the pawlitical TAKE DOWN. First, I work on the Clinton Scandal Shuffle which will be similar to the 1985 Super Bowl Shuffle by the Chicago Bears but rather than football players, it will feature a team of computer geeks dancing around their computers as they wait for 30,000 emails to delete. Next will be the Cruzin' Texas Two Step featuring Ted and the only other friend he has in the world country dancing right into the sunset. And then the big finale, The Trump Bump featuring me and the King of Orange going mono a mono doing the 1970's classic, The Bump. With my rump, we know who will be the only one left standing on the stage. Viva Americana!

Harris County Builds New Transfer Center, Saving Thousands of Animals The Harris County Health Department has announced their ability to increase the "leave alive rate" at the Harris County Animal Shelter. This February, the department hosted a groundbreaking at the shelter for a new Transfer Center. The Petco Foundation has provided a $180,000 grant to fund the center. As a government shelter, the department must take in all animals, even those that are sick, vicious, or difficult to adopt, even when the shelter is full. Sources say the shelter is almost always full, ever since the year it was built in 1986. The new Transfer Center will up to hold up to 87 adoptable dogs and cats for
10-14 days, keeping them separate from the general shelter population. This will ensure that sick animals do not contaminate the healthy, allowing the animals to be transferred to no-kill shelters and other counties or organizations that aren't as saturated. The department now hopes to adopt out up to 3,100 additional animals each year. CAP Doghouse Competition Returns Go green! Go high style.

MEDIA HOUNDS INTRO BY MICHELLE MANTOR PHOTOGRAPHY BY EVIN THAYER
H
ave you ever stopped to think about how much information we receive from local media regarding pet-related information? If there is an animal abuse case or puppy mill raid, our news media shares the story and even tells us where we can adopt the survivors. Various radio stations and television shows highlight adoptable animals weekly. And, many of our news media and TV personalities volunteer their time and talent to emcee pet events throughout the year. These are just a
few examples of how the communication reach of television, radio, print and online media can impact our pet community. Houston, like other big cities, has a pet overpopulation problem that is staggering. Hundreds of animals are euthanized weekly in our city and it’s a constant struggle, for those of us that want to change this disheartening paradigm, to find ways to turn these tragedies into heartwarming rescue stories. Here in the Bayou City we are fortunate to have MANY media outlets and personalities that are dedicated to making a positive
impact on improving the outlook for our stray, abandoned and neglected animals. In our 4th Annual Media Hounds issue, we at Houston PetTalk want to thank Houston’s Media for their willingness to highlight pet information by showcasing a cross section of media personalities that deserve our gratitude. Each of our "hounds" are photographed with their "sidekicks" so you can see who they snuggle up to when they go home! Enjoy learning more about these pet parents who have a "gift of word" that they use for the greater good.

GREG HURST KHOU 11 NEWS ANCHOR WITH "GRISSOM" How did you and Grissom find one another? I Saw Grissom’s dad at a dog show and thought he was a beautiful dog so I set my sights on one of the puppies from a new litter. We've been together for 14 years! What do you love about your relationship with Grissom? I’ve had pets all my life, but never a buddy like Grissom. He swims laps with me in the pool, he loves the outdoors (which keeps me active) and he's also a people person which makes life with him fun and easy. If Grissom could ask you a question, what do you think it would be? After dinner he’d want to ask if he could have “seconds.” If you could give Grissom a “human job” what would it be? Definitely security guard, although his bark is worse than his bite. Does Grissom have a favorite toy or sleeping place? His favorite toy is anything he can chew on! As for sleeping, he has his own room and loves sleeping with our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Sadie. If Grissom could ask you to take him somewhere, where would that place be? He wants to go everywhere with me, unless it’s late at night and then he's Lights Out. What is the number one thing you would want to tell the public about responsible pet care? A lot of people will talk about spay and neutering, which is important, but to me, neglect is also a big problem. The primary responsibility of a pet owner is to love and care for your pet.

The shelter took in a wide range of small dogs and I went in “just to look at the puppies.” Rookie mistake! I kept playing with Comet’s brothers, and she just tried harder to crawl onto my lap; she had no intention of letting me leave without her. If Comet could ask you a question, what do you think it would be? “Why do you want to leave me when you know I love car rides?” After taking her with me places all weekend, she looks so confused when I leave for work Monday morning. What is your favorite animal? In addition to how great dogs are, I love elephants. I'm fascinated by how they feel emotions like humans; they love, they grieve, they recognize family members even if they’ve been separated from the herd for a long time. Plus, and I don’t know if this is some magic trick I keep falling for, but I’ve totally seen them play soccer!
HALEY HERNANDEZ KPRC2 TV WITH REPORTER WITH "COMET"
If you could give your pet a “human job” what would it be? She would be an acrobat. I’m pretty sure she trains for it by jumping on/off my furniture. She moves more like a cat than a dog. Where does Comet sleep and what is her favorite treat? Comet sleeps in her bed on the floor… just kidding! That dog bed is for decoration. She always ends up at my feet. As for treats, she’ll do anything for a Pupperoni. If Comet could ask you to take her somewhere, where would
28
www.houstonpettalk.com
that place be? Back to the beach in Charleston. When we lived there, we would walk on the beach several times a week. She could smell the
salt air miles away and would start freaking out in the car. I’m sure she wonders why we never go there anymore.
How did Saber come into your life? Saber found me by way of a friend who must have known that our family needed him. His previous owner saw that Saber had medical problems and instead of helping him, they kicked him out. He roamed the streets for 9 months until he came to be a HUGE part of our critter family. What is that you love about animals? I was 3 years old when my folks brought home a baby armadillo that I named Tex. Since then, I have been in LOVE with all animals that I come across. Right now, me and my family live on a farm in Magnolia and we proudly call our 33 critters FAMILY. Dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, raccoons, opossums, pigs and even a skunk. They all come and go as they please and they all get along like
COWBOY DAVE DJ FOR 100.3 THE BULL CBS RADIO WITH "SABER" family, because we are family! The harmonious atmosphere teaches my kiddos that no matter what color you may be, your size, language or even species… we can all get along. Do you have a favorite animal? That’s a TOUGH question… I’d say that raccoons are my favorite critter and always have been. They get a bad rap but I know the truth. I’ve helped rescue quite a few in my lifetime and have gotten to know them and they are the most amazing critters to me. If Saber could ask you a question, what do you think it would be? "Can we go fishin’ everyday?" Saber LOVES hittin’ the pond with me as often as possible. When the kids are with us, he sneaks over to the minnow bucket and all the sudden. we are outta minnows.
If you could give Saber a “human job” what would it be? Counselor! Saber is the best listener I have ever met. Everyone who meets him gets an overwhelming feeling of calm and happiness! Where do you pets sleep? All of my critters sleep on the bed or couch. There is also an 8 ft pillow in front of the fireplace that at any given time, you’ll find any combination of species sleeping. Dogs, cats, ducks, chickens—all together. If Saber could ask you to take him somewhere, where would that place be? Saber LOVES going to the Magnolia Little League baseball park while they are practicing… he chases and returns EVERY ball thrown or hit. What are you doing or have done to support animal welfare causes
and/or events? Me and my entire family volunteer at the Montgomery County Animal Shelter as often as possible and I host adoption events throughout the city. What is the number one thing you would want to tell the public about responsible pet care? There is a big difference in CAN’T and WON’T. Before you give up on an animal, really think about them and listen to them. They will tell you what they need and if you let them into your heart, you’ll hear them and the relationship will last a lifetime. There is no more loyal love on this planet than that of an animal.

MIA GRADNEY KHOU 11 NEWS ANCHOR WITH "GEORGIE" Who is this cutie pie? This is Georgie, my Boston Terrier. It's Geoooooorgie if he's been naughty. He also has nicknames including Georgie Biscuit and Biscuit. It's the perfect compliment to my 9 yr. old daughter Avery who I affectionately call Muffin. How did Georgie join your family? My daughter really wanted a pet and begged for a dog so my husband I caved nearly five years ago and made Georgie a member of our family. He was the castoff in the litter because he was the runt but we couldn't resist

him. I mean, look at that face?!! Did you grow up with pets? I grew up with big dogs, mostly German Shepherds. Most of my relatives had Chihuahuas and Poodles. I remember thinking back then I wanted a dog somewhere in between those two sizes. Funny how that works out. Georgie is the perfect size. and he is a great running partner. He's truly the best dog my daughter could ever have. What are some of Georgie's favorite things to do? He loves to run, chase tennis balls and he can be
a bit mischievous too. He likes to run off with my daughter's Little Pet Shop toys but she lures him with a treat to get them back. I think Georgie knows exactly what he's up to with Avery and her toys. She cares for him and loves on him. He's more like her sibling. Is Georgie always on "GO" mode? He is quite active and very fast. But after all of the crazy running around, Georgie likes to chill-ax in his doggie bed. He enjoys alone time just as much as being at our heels, especially mine.
How did Molly come into your life? She was a gift for my birthday in August 2014. Tell us why you are an animal enthusiast. I haven’t owned a pet in 40 years, however, I started thinking about getting a rescue dog a few years ago while puppy sitting for my friend's dog. I enjoyed coming home to a wagging tail and bigger than life enthusiasm. Plus, I've always enjoyed my friends pets, but I just had a life style (and still do) that wasn’t conducive to owning an animal. Then when I got Molly, my life changed. Not socially, but my priorities changed. If Molly could ask you a question, what do you think it would be? "How come you don’t call when you know you’re going to be late!" What human job would Molly have? Official Greeter at any event! If Molly could ask you to take her somewhere, where would that place be? Lake Tahoe for sure. She loves to swim and hike there and play with her cousins, who live there too. What is your favorite animal? I have always been a dog lover….Labs, Setters, Retrievers. Where does Molly sleep? She sleeps with me. It’s very cozy…no matter how much room there is she is always next to me. What is the number one thing you would want to tell the public about responsible pet care? Treat your pet the way you would want to be treated.

BIANCA BUCARAM THE BUCARAM PUBLIC RELATIONS GROUP WITH "DIAMOND"
Who is this lovely lady in your arms? This is Diamond who is essentially my GodDog. Technically, she belongs to my friends that own A Dog House Pet Salon but I borrow her often! My lifestyle makes it hard
34
www.houstonpettalk.com
to have a full time pet and I respect that, so I "rent" LOL! Wow, so you really go out of your way to spend time with Diamond. What do you find so special about her? I have always loved animals,
and “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” I love her heart and her kind demeanor. It’s amazing to me how much soul an animal can have. The clarity of Diamond’s love shines through to my heart and is so comforting. Connecting with a dog, cat, rabbit, guinea pig, whatever animal you have, is a special experience. It makes me so happy to have the unconditional love of this little one around me. If Diamond could ask you a question, what do you think it would be? “Can we go get pampered at the spa yet? I need to get my nails done.” If Diamond could ask you to take her somewhere, where would that place be? Seaside, probably somewhere in the Bahamas. Give us a peak into Diamond's personality as well as her likes and dislikes. She is one of a kind, like any diamond. She’s soft spoken, but don’t underestimate her. She’s got a bark and a bite! Diamond loves latin food, and can salsa all the way home. Just like me, she loves to boogie, dance, and have a good time! I should add that she is quite independent and likes to make her own friends. She’s picky and choosy… but she picks them well! What I love about her is that Diamond is well mannered and acts like a lady when she goes out in public. She’s also very talented—she is bilingual and speaks several languages including her native tongue. Do you work with any animal charities? I love working with MyPetCredentials to support animal welfare. It's very important to keep animals off the streets and be responsible pet owners!
MEERA NANDLAL OWNER, MAHARANI MEDIA WITH "RAJ" We hear you have a new animal project. Tell us about your new adventure. I am working with Houston Television (HTV) at the City of Houston on a new webisode, Animal Life on HTV. It's very exciting! It’s an investigative show to eradicate Houston’s pet overpopulation problem by focusing on education. I work with all animal welfare groups, our legal system and others in our community to bring the facts to the public. You can check it out at: www. facebook.com/AnimalLifeonHTV. Tell us about your pets. I have three rescue pets. Raj is my 5 yr. old German Shepherd mix that I adopted from the Houston SPCA when he was 7 months old. I fostered him to save him from being euthanized and never let him go! I also have Joey, a rescue cat that was my late father's pet and Phoebe, another rescue cat that came to our family at 8 wks. old. Joey needed a friend and she was the cutest kitten I ever met. Why are you drawn to animals? My love for animals began at the Bronx Zoo in New York. I was fascinated with all animals, but it changed one day at the petting zoo. I was given a baby’s bottle at the age of 5 to feed a small lamb. It was the day I bonded with an animal and understood that they were just like me. They wanted to be loved and needed to be cared for. From that day on, I begged to go to the zoo more often and wanted my own pet. I got my first dog at the age of 10 here in Texas. He was a 2 month old puppy we named “Handsome,” who lived to be 13. He is the reason for my love and understanding for all animals. All my dogs and cats of the past and present have taught me respect, responsibility, patience, kindness, compassion and how to love unconditionally. If Raj, Joey and Pheobe could talk, what would they ask you? Raj would
say, "I’m craving a puppy latte, can you take me to Starbucks?” Joey would ask, “Can I get my own Facebook account?” but he would say it in French, because he’s sophisticated. Phoebe would ask, “Are you sure you want to keep Raj?” What do you think their human jobs would be? Raj’s human job would be modelling. He’s quite a poser and a looker. He’s been tagged “A Ladies Man”
at day camp. Phoebe’s human job would be as an exterminator. She’s a wiz at killing insects. Joey’s human job would be a computer technician….he loves computers! Phoebe’s would be an exterminator. She’s a wiz at killing insects. What would you tell the public about responsible pet care? Animals can live 10 to 15 years or longer. The most important thing to do is to make sure that your pet is spayed/neutered to cut down on pet overpopulation. Also, have them microchipped and don’t let them roam and breed. They are a member of your family, so treat them with love and respect.

RANDY WALLACE REPORTER FOR KRIV FOX26 WITH "BRODY" Tell us about this cute pup. This is Brody, my dachshund/beagle mix. I also have a pit bull whose real name is Sugar but I call her big head. Why? Because she’s got a big head. Have you always had pets? Yes. I’ve always been a pet lover but it seems the older I get the more I prefer dogs to people. In 2012, I had to put my miniature dachshund named Simon down and it nearly broke my heart. I swore off getting any more

dogs (I still had Brody). Some friends kept bringing their pit bull puppy (Sugar) for me to pet sit. I was one of those people who was anti-pit bull but after a few months, I fell in love with her. Now I think pit bulls are the best dogs ever. What jobs would your dogs have as humans? Sugar would be a great Walmart greeter. Brody would be a good telemarketer because he likes to yap so much. Watch for more on this story at
If your dogs could talk, where would they ask you to take them? Sugar will go anywhere and everywhere. She jumps for joy if she hears me say "let’s go bye bye". She and Brody both love to go to the park. What advice would you offer the public regarding responsible pet care? Don’t buy a dog or cat when there are so many great ones in shelters desperately waiting for a home.

Health Cardiac Diseases Commonly Found in Pets By: Rebecca Cervenec, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Cardiology) www.gcvs.com
H
eart disease can affect our loved ones, including our pets. Animals may have congenital heart disease, meaning they were born with an anomaly, or they may develop acquired disease later in life. Examples of heart disease in dogs include chronic degenerative valve disease and dilated cardiomyopathy. Chronic degenerative valve disease is a condition where the heart valves become thickened and lose the ability to function as one-way valves. This allows blood to leak backward across the valves, which causes a volume overload and a subsequently enlarged heart. Dilated cardiomyopathy is a disease where the cardiac muscle contracts more weakly than normal, which eventually causes the heart to become dilated. One example of heart disease in cats is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This is a condition where the myocardium (heart muscle)
44
www.houstonpettalk.com
becomes abnormally thickened. This causes the myocardium to become stiff and relax abnormally. One of the most reliable ways to detect heart disease is to ensure your pet has regular visits to his or her veterinarian. A heart murmur is an abnormal sound that can be detected when your veterinarian performs a physical exam on your pet. A murmur is caused by turbulence in the heart or one of the vessels leaving the heart. The most sensitive way to determine the cause of a murmur is to have an echocardiogram performed by a veterinary cardiologist. An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart. It is a test that allows a trained individual to closely study the heart, including evaluation of chamber size and heart function. Chest x-rays are another useful diagnostic tool. They can provide information about the size of the heart and the appearance of the lungs.
Not all animals with heart disease develop adverse effects. Additionally, the various types of heart disease can progress at different rates. However, animals with extensive changes to their hearts may be at risk for the development of congestive heart failure. Congestive heart failure is the condition in which fluid builds up in the lungs or the abdomen secondary to excessive blood volume. With left-sided congestive heart failure, fluid leaks out into the lungs and causes respiratory signs, including coughing or heavy breathing. These signs occur because the fluid in the lungs impedes oxygen absorption from the lungs to the blood. With right-sided congestive
heart failure, the fluid accumulates in the abdomen, manifesting as a distended abdomen. If an animal develops congestive heart failure, medications can be given to prevent fluid accumulation and to enhance heart function. Symptoms that can develop with heart disease include labored or rapid breathing, coughing, exercise intolerance, abdominal distension, and collapse. These signs can also be seen with conditions other than heart disease. If you note any of these signs, it is important to have your pet evaluated by a veterinarian so they can determine the best course of action and institute appropriate therapy.

What's Taking So Long? Animal Emergency Hospital: How It Works By: Dr. David Helcel VERGI Emergency and Critical Care Hospital www.vergi247.com
I
f you’ve ever had to bring your pet to an emergency hospital, you may have noticed that it doesn’t work like your regular veterinarian’s office visit. A primary veterinarian’s practice is typically run on an appointment basis, meaning, you call
non life-threatening cases. In triage medicine for animals, much like human hospitals, it doesn’t matter if you got there first, called ahead, or know someone who works there. The primary consideration is the severity of a pet’s illness. A triage evaluation gen-
trained to listen for and identify key phrases, to tell if an immediate (STAT) evaluation or standard evaluation is needed. The term “STAT” actually comes from the Latin word “statim” meaning “immediately”.
2. NURSE EVALUATION In the case of a STAT evaluation, your pet will be immediately taken for a veterinarian to examine. In the case of a standard evaluation it begins with a series of questions regarding your observation of your pet, followed by a veterinary examination. Emergencies are graded on a scale of 1 - 5, with a grade of 1 being the most severe.
exam, which encompasses the entire pet, will be done, and the doctor will formulate a tentative diagnosis and treatment plan for your pet.
4. TREATMENT At this point, you meet with the doctor to discuss their findings of the exams and they explain the tests and treatments your pet needs. You will be presented with an estimate and after your approval, the procedures or tests are begun on your pet, results obtained, treatments completed, and your pet is discharged to your care, unless the pet needs to be hospitalized. You may wonder why it takes so long, the short

answer is, in addition to your pet, there are usually numerous other pets in the hospital that are being cared for along with new arrivals in various stages of illness. Pythiosis The Deadly Disease You've Probably Never Heard Of By: Michaele M. Oberbroeckling, D.V.M VitalPet Kings Crossing Animal Hospital www.vitalpet.com
I
magine your young, active dog slowly becoming debilitated due to nausea, vomiting, inappetance, and diarrhea (sometimes bloody). You’ve kept up with his vaccinations and his heartworm and intestinal parasite prevention and you feed him a high quality diet. You’ve taken him to his veterinarian a couple of times for diagnostics and treatment already. Nothing significant has yet been found on his bloodwork, urinalysis, x-rays, and fecal test. He responds a little to supportive care, but relapses as soon as treatment ends. He has even been wormed to rule out intestinal parasites, which can be present in spite of a negative fecal test. Your frustration and alarm grow as your dog continues to have symptoms and is now losing significant amounts of weight. You bring him back to his veterinarian one more time, or perhaps to a different veterinarian for a second opinion. This time, a mass is felt in his abdomen. Ultrasound confirms involvement of the intestine. Surgery is scheduled and the veterinarian warns you that cancer is a possibility and if the cancer appears to have spread already, euthanasia is likely the most humane option. A heartbreaking scenario, yet this is a fairly typical presentation of infection caused by an aquatic organism, Pythium insidiosum. Unless a veterinarian considers pythiosis as a diagnosis, biopsy and histopathology might not be pursued and cancer may

be assumed, which could result in a decision for euthanasia. Pythiosis is not yet well known or recognized by veterinarians. Infection is more common in the Gulf Coast states, making this disease a concern for pet owners in the Houston area. Pythium insidiosum can cause gastrointestinal disease in dogs from ingestion of water containing the organism. It can also gain entry through wounds or abrasions in the skin and cause a cutaneous infection. Cats, horses, cattle and people are also susceptible to infection. Pythiosis is typically slowly progressive and dogs may not become seriously ill until late in the course of the disease. Surgical removal of affected intestine is the preferred treatment and the tissue should be submitted for

histopathology. Histopathology alone may not confirm the diagnosis and additional testing is often required. Dr. Amy Grooters, an expert on pythiosis, offers diagnostic testing through Louisiana State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. Sometimes surgery is not an option, because the lesions are not resectable or there are multiple areas of infection. Medical treatment with amphotericin B lipid complex or itraconazole (sometimes with terbinafine) has been used, but is expensive and only about 25% of dogs have a good response to medical therapy. Immunotherapy and testing for pythiosis is available through Pan American Veterinary Laboratories in Hutto, Texas. Immunotherapy may be more successful earlier in the disease course and in combination with surgery and medical treatment. Pythiosis is a difficult disease to diagnose and treat, and the fatality rate is high when disease is advanced. The best chance for survival occurs with early diagnosis, which makes awareness of this disease by veterinarians and pet owners critically important. Houston PetTalk Magazine

ort Bend Pets Alive! (FBPA!) has had a successful meeting with the City of Stafford, Texas' city council, and things look promising as the group and city officials seem to be in full support of amendments to several animal related ordinances in Section 10. Some of the amendments include allowing a longer grace period for impounded animals which would give reasonable amount of time for owners to locate lost pets before they are euthanized, adopted, or otherwise disposed of, and several amendments to adjust wording that implies it is legal for the animal control office to sell impounded dogs and cats. The amendments would change the text to make sale of any impounded animals, especially to laboratories, completely unacceptable. Another example cited would require owners to both microchip their pets and have their pets wear a city issued license tag. The amendments will influence the city of Stafford and Fort Bend County. In a fourth city council meeting this March, FBPA! formed a work group to find the best language to amend the third draft of the Section 10 amendments. The group also hopes to increase participation in Trap, Neuter, Return programs to reduce animal populations, and to influence the laws with a goal of instituting a "no kill" mission. For Bend Pets Alive! is a non-profit,
501(C)3 organization, dedicated to helping make Fort Bend a no kill community through programs such as adoptions, education and community outreach, low cost spay and neuter surgeries, fostering, Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (PASS), and helping to rescue from euthanasia lists. FBPA! hopes to unite more pet owners with lost pets.

Canine Leadership Program Benefits both Dogs and Juvenile Handlers By: Mara Soloway
S
ince 2011, approximately 60 dogs from Fort Bend County Animal Services have found forever homes thanks to the adoptability skills taught them by youth in Fort Bend County Juvenile Probation’s leadership academy and in detention. Through the Canine Leadership

Program, youth in Rosenberg and Arcola teach the dogs basic obedience, walking on a loose leash, tricks and in some cases agility. The youth are involved in the adoption process, which is aided by the logs they keep with training and other details about each dog. The youth gain valuable leadership and trust skills and how to care for a dog. “The most important thing we teach the kids is to have line of communication with the dog – to be patient, persistent and consistent,” says Jackie Brady, program coordinator of the Canine Leadership Program. “Most of them don’t realize how you can communicate with a dog.” Called an “animal whisperer” by her colleagues, Brady picks up nonaggressive dogs from Fort Bend County Animal Services. Brady and her coworker at the time, Mary Gready of Special Programs,
Brownie got the medicine and TLC he needed, he was like a different dog, with eyes shining and tail wagging,” says Gready, who is now retired. He started working with a boy who trained him and went on to learn agility on the course that Brady built. Brownie became mascot for the program and was allowed to come in the office where he got well socialized. “Everybody that came in the office thought he was just another staff member,” Gready says. He

modeled the program after one in the Williamson County juvenile justice facility north of Austin. Both women are passionate about kids, animals and community service. The first session had two dogs; now four to six dogs gain the benefits of the juveniles’ hard work. A German Shepherd mix named Brownie from one of the early sessions was lucky enough to be chosen for the Canine Leadership Program, but he was depressed and ill. “Once
cheered children who seem depressed by letting them pet him. He got adopted, but the person brought him back a few days later saying he seemed to miss everyone at the program office. Gready stepped in as adopter and is considering working to get Brownie’s Canine Good Citizenship certification so he can work as a therapy dog. Other adopted dogs are doing their therapeutic best in their forever homes. Cane has brought new life to his elderly adopter, who
was once chair-bound. By his insistent barking, Bandit alerted adopter Josie Platz and her family that an elderly neighbor had fallen in her yard. “I don’t know what would have happened to her if Bandit had not been barking,” Platz says. “He is an awesome dog – he’s very loving and fits in well with our family.” He knows not to get in the way of Platz’s mother, who uses a walker. “By learning positive leader and direct communication techniques, the juveniles become better
dog handlers but can also use the techniques when they’re with their friends in good ways,” Brady said. She counsels those who seem interested in how to have a future working with animals. “These kids are at a crisis point. They have to deal with consequences of what they did, but at the same time, they need positive things in their lives. The Canine Leadership Program helps them learn and give unconditional love,” Gready says. The Canine Leadership
Program is a partnership between the Fort Bend County Juvenile Probation Department, Fort Bend County Animal Services, Fort Bend Partnership for Youth, which supplies dog food and equipment; and the Houston Humane Society, which provides spaying and neutering services, vaccines and heartworm treatment for free. For more information, visit www.fortbendcountytx. gov/index.aspx?page=285. To adopt one of the dogs, call 281-342-1512.

Grooming World One Paw at A Time By: Tanya Lawson www.thepetpedisock.com
I
designed the Pet Pedi Sock for my Cocker Spaniel because I prefer her nails not to be clipped. During grooming sessions when a grinder was used, her paw would sometimes be tender and sore so I decided to take matters into my own hands. I headed to the pet supply store and bought a Pedi Paws to grind her nails. It didn’t take long to figure out I had no clue how to work on those hairy paws. After trimming the paw hair on all four paws with scissors (I don’t like a shaved paw), I attempted to use the Pedi Paws. It has a nice large barrel with a dust cap. The dust cap kept catching her nails, so I took it off. I thought I had it under control until I caught her hair in the barrel. I gave up out of frustration, went back to the store and asked what their groomers used with the Pedi Paws to prevent tangling. I was surprised when the Assistant told me “Nothing… they use a Dremel instead to speed up the process.” A dremel has a tiny barrel and spins a hundred times faster than a Pedi Paws. After searching the internet and finding no solutions, I got to work designing a prototype of a sock that would force the hair away from the nails. It took my dog a little while to get comfortable with the sock plus the humming of the Pedi Paws, but I was able to grind her nails smooth. Next, I decided to have groomers in Houston
test it. Their feedback was positive. That was 4 years ago and since that time I have been marketing the Pet Pedi Sock and have applied for a patent. During the course of these four years, my product has also been identified as a great solution for clipping bird's nails too. The sock comes in 5 sizes for $12.99. You can find the Pet Pedi Sock on Etsy and wholesale purchases are welcome. My advice to first time users is to be patient. The sock will snag as many times as the Dremel would have caught paw hair. The sweat glands are in the pads of the paws, so the fabric needs to breath. See the “how-to” video on the website, www.thepetpedisock.com. Henry and Simone will show you how easy it is!

Over 150 Collies Seized Local Hoarder Convicted By: Rebecca Burwell With Contribution & Photos from Houston Collie Rescue
I
n January of 2016, "Texas Dog Lawyer" Zandra Anderson helped to find justice for over 150 Collies. Unbelievably, the case originally involved disputed ownership over just three collies at the home of a Dr. Elaine Kmiec, a local optometrist. Despite working in the eye care field, Dr. Kmiec must have had trouble with her vision as the case quickly ballooned when it was revealed that she had actually concealed many more dogs, over 150 collies in total. This is not the first time that Kmiec has been in trouble with the law. She was first forced to give up 51 Collies nearly 10 years ago in a cruelty surrender. Two seizures in 2014 resulted in over 150 Collies and numerous cats being taken from Dr. Kmiec because they were living in deplorable conditions, according to Zandra Anderson. The Texas Dog Lawyer says, "In 2013, Kara Kaufman was deceived by Dr. Elaine Kmiec who used a fake name to get three Collies. She used a pseudonym because she had given up 51 Collies in a cruelty surrender in 2007." Once Kara learned of the
60

doctor's deception, she immediately began a lawsuit to have the dogs returned to safety. Luckily for the Ms. Kaufman and the collies, the judge in the case returned the dogs. However, even when presented by officers with a writ of execution, Dr. Kmiec refused to release the animals. According to Anderson, Kmiec filed for bankruptcy on the eve of being appointed a receiver in the state court case. Famose Garner, a Houston attorney, represents Ms. Kaufman in the bankruptcy case. With the bankruptcy case underway, Ms. Kaufman's three collies were returned in poor condition. It is due to this noted condition that the court ordered Dr. Kmiec to surrender all other animals in her care. The number of dogs in her home was thought to be around 35 animals, however the final number of collies secured from the optometrist's home swelled to 97. Another shock came during a subsequent seizure that revealed more hidden animals. Nineteen more dogs and six felines were located and collected, and some of the female dogs had puppies after the

seizures further increasing the number of dogs. After the second seizure, Kmiec acquired more dogs that were being hidden off of her premises. In June of 2015 a third seizure took place. By this point the federal court had an agreed order stating that Kmiec would not own or possess any animals for two years, during which time she was to attend counseling sessions.
Attorney Zandra Anderson describes the state of the animals, noting "The dogs were in horrific conditions living in squalor. Every dog had giardia which is from dogs being in feces, and they were malnourished with skin conditions, hair loss and a host of other maladies." Upon seeing the condition of the animals in Ms. Kmiec's care from the two seizures in 2014, the Harris County District
PET PORTRAITS in watercolor by
Attorney's office accepted four charges of animal cruelty against Kmiec. Oh January 26, 2016 Kmiec plead guilty to two of the charges and was convicted of animal cruelty. She was sentenced to one year in jail probated to two years for the two misdemeanor animal cruelty convictions. The conditions of the probation include that she may have no animals during the probation period. Kmiec has also earned herself a felony charge for fabricating evidence. "It has been a long time coming, but justice was served today. The system worked to punish someone who is guilty of animal cruelty and while no jail time will be served, this was a true victory for these beautiful
Collies and cats that were subjected to unthinkable conditions. It is also a victory for Kara Kaufman whose unwavering tenacity paid off and for Houston Collie Rescue who did an unbelievable job in providing for every dog. All got the care and love they were missing and were adopted to caring families all over the country. Kudos to Harris County for vigorously pursuing this deserving case and getting these convictions," says Anderson on the happy conclusion of this horrific case of neglect. Pet Friendly Hyundai to support "Rescue Me" Parade
W
ith a passion for charity, both North Freeway Hyundai and Humble Hyundai are recognized in the community as benevolent businesses that give back to the community through support of programs such as “Hyundai Hope on Wheels”. This program raises awareness and funds for pediatric cancer research. So it’s no surprise when both dealerships stepped up to support Houston PetTalk’s annual event, Doggy Party on
the Plaza, which brings awareness to a large number of rescue organizations in the Houston area. At this year’s event to be held April 2 at CityCentre, North Freeway Hyundai and Humble Hyundai are sponsoring the “Rescue Me!” parade held during the festival. Through their support, Doggy Party will provide over $10,000 in prize donations to 13 rescue groups competing in the parade for much needed items such as veterinary care, grooming and hundreds of pounds of food for the dogs in their care. Hyundai’s collaboration and commitment makes a huge impact on the local rescue community just as their commitment to customers makes them Houston’s #1 Hyundai source. We at PetTalk want to thank the dealerships for their exemplary distinction as businesses that “give back” by inviting you to give them a try the next time you are in need of a vehicle or service on a current vehicle. They don’t simply “run with the pack”, they strive to be the leader with a single goal to exceed customer expectations, every time. Learn more about North Freeway Hyundai at www.northfreewayhyundai.com or Humble Hyundai at www. humblehyundai.com or stop by their locations conveniently located on I-45 N in Spring, or I-59 N in Humble! A Partnership to Protect Pachyderms
partnership of its kind, the effort will provide support for solutions to the frequent and sometimes deadly conflicts between people and elephants on the Southeast Asian island of Borneo. The entire population of the little-known Asian elephant subspecies has been reduced to around 2,000 in the wild, where deforestation — largely driven by logging and palm oil production — threatens their survival. Agricultural workers sometimes kill or injure elephants that raid their plantations, and the clashes can also separate calves from their herds. Houstonians are more familiar with Borneo pygmy elephants’ larger cousin the Asian elephant which are
also endangered. “When you are a local villager and you see your crop completely destroyed overnight, you will not be inspired to save the elephants,” said Dr. Marc Ancrenaz, scientific director for Borneo-based conservation organization Hutan. “Elephants need forests to survive, and people need to convert the forest into other types of land uses, like agriculture, to survive, hence the conflict. If we can’t make peace there, extinction is inevitable.” The partnership, formed by the Houston Zoo, Oregon Zoo, and Seattlebased Woodland Park, will focus on researching how human-elephant conflicts arise and mitigating those
conflicts through community outreach, policy, technology and in some cases, elephant relocation. The work is carried out in Borneo by the Sabah Wildlife Department and conservation organizations HUTAN KOCP and Danau Girang Field Centre. “The health of the forest is in many ways connected to healthy elephant populations,” said Peter Riger, vice president of conservation and education at the Houston Zoo, which has supported Borneo conservation programming since 2004. “Their need for protected areas and migration corridors literally protects hundreds of species, including amphibians, insects, mammals, birds and many others. In turn, the health of the landscape supports human communities in their
livelihoods.” The first line of defense in human-elephant conflict
is largely a hardware approach. Installing electric fences and training communities to peacefully repel marauding pachyderms are two such tactics. But according to Ancrenaz, elephant-proofing only works in tandem with viable travel alternatives for elephants, such as corridors along waterways. That takes money, but also a detailed understanding of elephant migration patterns, landuse planning and backing from the government — all part of the project’s strategy. “Conservation depends on local and international partnerships,” said Woodland Park Zoo vice president of field conservation Fred Koontz. “A consortium of organizations brings more resources to bear in support of the monumental effort of protecting elephants and
their habitats.” “This is the first step in a long-term, multi-zoo commitment to protecting Borneo’s wildlife and ecosystems,” said Oregon Zoo conservation and research manager Dr. Nadja Wielebnowski. “We hope this model will both strengthen Malaysia’s resolve to protect wildlife and inspire more conservation organizations to get involved.” As a zoo-based conservation organization, the Houston Zoo aims to save animals from extinction through strategic partnerships. The zoo’s main conservation focus is to foster and grow our partnerships to strengthen our conservation impact around the world.
