ecently, I was looking at a Facebook page that is community focused and created for the purpose of allowing people in my community to trade, sell and buy items. I was looking for a piece of furniture for a photoshoot and I happened to see a post trying to find a new home for two Sugar Gliders. And, this was right after a friend had just told me about getting two Sugar Gliders for her kids but quickly got rid of them. "Too much trouble", she said, "Plus, they are up all night and sleep all day so when they want to play, the kids are asleep". I wanted to say "Well, duh, they are nocturnal animals", but I bit my tongue. Unfortunately, too many families get an exotic small pet for their kids, all to find out that the pet doesn't fit their lifestyle or there are negatives they just can't get past. Even with doing some research, it's still possible to find that what you get in reality with these animals is not what you thought it would be. So, I figured what a great topic for PetTalk! Let's see if we can shed some light on the REAL lives of

these critters and hopefully help potential pet owners make a better informed decision and also help the animals by making sure they aren't bounced around from one place to another. There are plenty of choices for small pet ownership but we chose to focus on five: ferret, chinchilla, rabbit, bearded dragon lizard and dwarf hamster. I have to say the photoshoots were too much fun and I even found myself thinking about a few of these critters for our house but I quickly reminded myself that I was only seeing the cute part. I wasn't cleaning, feeding, managing, etc. In our feature, each of the owners (all children) tell us what it's like to care for an exotic pet, including the good, the bad and the ugly (mostly stinky). Enjoy meeting these cute little souls and if you are planning on getting a small pet, just be sure to talk with several people who have that species and get the real skinny on what it's like to be their pet parent. Also in our June issue, you will find a few fun things that are
Aren't I Cute? Yes, you're a very adorable ferret! Small and exotic pets can be quite tempting because they are...well...exotic! Not everyone has an unusual pet and there is something compelling about small animals that are more on the "wild" side than a cat or dog. However, they often come with some undesirable qualities that potential owners should be aware of. Read our feature to find out the good, the bad and the ugly (or should we say stinky?) of small pet ownership. Photo By: Prudence Allwein www.photographybyprudence.com.
traditional for this month. First, Father's Day is celebrated June 19 and we always like to give a shout out to pet dads. Check out our fabulous finds on page 60. Next, our annual Pets in the Wildflowers Photo Contest brought in record entries and some amazing photos! As we have in past years, we publish ALL of the entries and this is the only contest where we provide that much space but we think the photos are so cool we just make it happen! Finally, I'm excited to announce we have officially launched our new online business tracking service, PetTalk GoFetch! offering business listings, classified ads, deals, reviews and more. Check out your favorite businesses and give them a boost by rating them. We would love to have your feedback about this new service as we work to improve it daily. us all dying from a meteorite hitting earth, let’s get back to some pawsitive thoughts here.” So, let’s see. Pawsitive. Well, what kind of animal would not have to worry about a flood? A giraffe! Yes, how cool would it be if you were that tall? Here’s a few perks that came to mind: While waiting in line for dinner reservations, you could just snack on some trees in the parking lot. A night on the town with a Limo would be unbelievable. If you think you get a lot of looks when your Limo pulls up to a nightclub, wait until it pulls up with a Giraffe’s head sticking out of the sun roof! No one would ask you to take a Selfie with them. You could be employed by the Rockets as a practice partner to

bring comedic relief to the morning seriousness at Starbucks when you order a “Tall” latte. Well, enough of that. I sufficiently got my mind off sad thoughts. But then another bad thought popped right into my brain. Tomorrow DL is back and she said we’re going on a “slimming program” to get ready for bikini season. She’s totally crackers. She does not know what it’s like to try to get 6 boobs into a bikini top. And one thing is definitely for sure, I’m not getting a bikini wax! I mean, like, where would they stop? I really need to rethink this whole relationship with her come to think of it. Why am I listening to someone who pees in her water bowl, exhibits masochistic behavior by bathing everyday, never sniffs anyone's butt and puts the best food in the garbage and then yells at me for trying to eat it? Yes, that’s the most pawsitive thought I’ve had all day. I’m marking that on my calendar. Note To Self: Redefine relationship with DL. Following calendar day - Note To Self: Start looking for new place to live.

was laying under the big oak tree in the front yard the other day feeling joyous about having nothing to do but chill. I was doing nothing because Dragon Lady was away for the day relieving me of the endless stream of words coming at me that usually begin with something like: “Henrietta, why didn’t you…”, “Henrietta, I thought I told you to…” Henrietta, for the last time I’m telling you to…”, and on and on. DL has a way of making you want to exchange her chap stick for glue stick. So, I was enjoying my freedom from speech and letting my mind wander where it may. But, as much as I try to be a cheerful spirit, my mind jumps from the “happy” side of my brain to the “fretting” side of my brain. Just like that. Jumps straight over to the other lobe. My worry gene kicked in and I started thinking about the recent Houston floods. What a terrible thing for both two leggers and four leggers. I imagined all of the ruined homes and then I was thinking about all of the poor critters that had no way to save themselves because they were either trapped in cages or just too small to deal with the torrent of water. Then I thought, “Ok Henrietta, before you have

Does my cat urinate on the carpet now to misbehave? He started it this week. -Mrs. Garza Cats commonly suffer from urinary tract health issues and may suddenly develop new patterns of urination such as in the bathroom sink or bathtub! Any changes in urinary habits should be evaluated by your veterinarian to make sure it's not bladder inflammation (cystitis), infection, an issue linked to possible urinary obstruction, or other health issue like kidney disease. Behavior issues and "acting out" can happen when your cat is stressed but the medical issues should be checked off the list first. Why does your dog pant? And why the wet puppy nose? UNIQUE PETS

The Pros & Cons S
o cute! But so wild! Yes, these adorable little critters that we call small animals or exotics are the "other" pets beyond cat and dog ownership. Often gotten to quell the pleas of young children, the lure of "something different" beckons but these creatures come with both good and bad elements of ownership. Just the other day a friend asked me if I knew anyone that would like two sugar gliders along with all of their accessories. I responded by asking why since I knew they had just gotten them and I thought her kids were enjoying their new pets. She replied, "Well, they liked them at first but now the novelty has worn off. Plus, they play all night and sleep during the day so the kids are sleeping when the sugar gliders are awake so it doesn't work out very well." "Duh" is what I thought to myself. Of course they sleep during the day because any bozo that bothered to research these wild animals before getting them as a pet would know they are nocturnal. This scenario plays out all too often which gave me the idea for this feature story. Too many people get a pet that they aren't prepared to own. Each species comes with pros and cons and if you are not ready for the responsibility, don't get the pet. For the story, we chose a few of the popular exotics to give you an inside look at what it's like to own them...from their owners! We asked each pet owner (all children between the ages of 7 and 17) to give us the inside scoop and help our readers decide if these pets are a good fit for their family.

FERRET “Ash” owned by Logan A.
What made you choose a ferret as a pet? I wanted a ferret because I think they are cute and I thought it would be fun to play with and take care of.
What kind of research did you do prior to getting Ash? I did some research before I got her but I really should have done more. They are very social animals; you can't just leave her in the cage and look at her. When we got her, we were told her scent glands had been removed. But, to know how the ferret will smell in your home, smell around the neck area and this what the room they stay in will smell like.
What is the best thing about having Ash as a pet? I love that she is so playful. She does really funny things and entertains our whole family. She is very curious and gets into everything.
Did You Know: FERRET FACTS ❖ ❖
What is the worst thing about having this type of pet? The worst thing is that their poop smells really, really bad (they poop up to 10 times per day and the consistency is like toothpaste, not pellets). Also, their fur has a bad smell, kind of musky. She needs a bath once per week in addition to cleaning her cage and litter pan everyday.
What are some of those funny things Ash does? She does this thing where she'll bounce around and swing her head. Kind of like a crazy dance and we all laugh. I think she knows she is entertaining us. She also likes to get your attention by biting your toes. She doesn't bite your hands, but gives kisses instead.

❖
Expected life span is 7-10 years Ferrets are known to suffer from several distinct health problems. Among the most common are cancers affecting the adrenal glands, pancreas, and lymphatic system. Viral diseases include canine distemper and influenza. Domesticated form of the European polecat, a mammal belonging to the same genus as the weasel. Often used to hunt rabbits but more recently have become common household pets. Spends 14-18 hours a day asleep and are most active around the hours of dawn and dusk, meaning they are crepuscular. They poop many times per day

because their digestive tract is so short. The smell is bad because they are meat eaters. They are prone to biting so they may not be the best pet for young children. An experienced pet owner is best for ferrets. They are intelligent animals with high energy and need lots of playtime. Otherwise, they can be very destructive, messing up litter trays, food, water, and even chipping their teeth through constant biting of their cages. In addition to being prepared to spend several hours per day playing with your ferret and cleaning their cage daily, you might need to be prepared to have two - ferrets do better when they live with a buddy.

CHINCHILLA “Dot” owned by Cayden U.
What made you decide to get a chinchilla? My big brother had one when I was younger, and it could jump really high, so it interested me.
How did you prepare for having a new chinchilla? A family friend had one so we read a few books about it and thought it would be good for everyone. And, since my big brother had one before, we already knew pretty much what to expect.
What is the best thing or most fun thing about having Dot? The most fun thing about Dot is watching her when we let her run around, either in her ball or on the ground. She runs really fast around the house so it’s hard to catch her but it's a lot of fun too.
What are some difficult aspects of caring for a chinchilla? When we let her run around outside of the ball and we can’t find her, she will chew on the baseboards and wooden furniture. Also, she is nocturnal so most of the time at night she will run on her wheel and keep us up.

Do you have any regrets about choosing Dot? No, she’s fun to play with, and my mom says it helps me with responsibility, like when I have to change her cage or feed her.
Did You Know: CHINCHILLA FACTS ❖ ❖
If you were to give tips to someone thinking about getting a chinchilla, what would you tell them? If you let your chinchilla run around, keep track of it or put it in an area that it cannot jump out of so it won’t ruin your furniture. Also, change their cage often. Because it doesn’t smell much, it's easy to forget and then there is a lot to clean when you do remember.
What is something funny or unusual that Dot does? It's not safe to wash a chinchilla so instead, they take "dust baths" in lava dust. When we put her in the lava dust, she will start rolling over and running around really fast. It’s so cute!
❖
Lifespan is 10 years Currently listed as a critically endangered species by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Human hunting for the fur trade has caused the severe population decline. One full length coat requires 150 pelts. Please DO NOT purchase a Chinchilla coat! Native to the Andes mountains in South America. They instinctively clean their fur by taking dust baths, in which they roll around in special dust made of

A chinchilla's diet should consist of 30% fibre, 14-16% protein, 35% carbohydrate, 3.5% fat and oil, 4% sugar, 6% minerals and 10% moisture/trace element, 32.400 Vitamin D, 14.000 Vitamin A, 80 Vitamin E. REX RABBIT “T-Rex” owned by Riley B.
What made you decide you wanted a Rex rabbit? They are really cute and soft!
What kind or amount of research did you do prior to getting T Rex? We researched their behavior, diet, best type of enclosure, type of vet care and their ability to get along with other pets. We wanted to make sure we had enough time to care for him

Did You Know: REX RABBIT FACTS ❖
❖
❖
Lifespan is 5-6 years; Neutering can extend this life span. The Rex is a variety of rabbit that has plush fur and is often described as having a velvety texture. Should be fed high-quality hay and rabbit pellets, as well as
❖
fibrous green vegetables (cabbage, kale, dandelions and nettles, all of which will help keep teeth worn down). Keep fresh water available at all times. Easy to litter train and as such make excellent house rabbits. Avoid cedar-based litter because it can be harmful.
and know how to feed and play with him.
What is the best thing or most fun thing about having T-Rex? Watching him run and slide across the floor and do random jumps and twists.
What is the worst thing about having a rabbit? He's fun to watch but he's not cuddly and affectionate like cats and dogs.
Do you have any regrets about getting a rabbit? No, we are enjoying taking care of him and playing with him.
If you were to give advice to someone thinking about getting a rabbit, what would you tell them? If you are looking for a cuddly pet, a rabbit might not be the best choice. They require a lot of maintenance and time so you have to be willing to have a pet that's not very affectionate and needs lots of care.
Tell us something cute or funny about T-Rex. He likes to bite his toys and flip them in the air. He also loves sliding back and forth on the exercise mat.
What is the daily, weekly or monthly schedule like? He needs fresh food, hay and water twice a day and the litter box cleaning 2-3 times a week. He needs to get out of the hutch for play, exercise and stimulation at least an hour a day. He doesn't really like being picked up from inside the cage so we let him come out on his own. It takes patience to work with him daily on getting used to us and our other pets. He is pretty cautious and fearful so we try to respect that and be patient with him. Houston PetTalk Magazine

BEARDED DRAGON “Cooper” owned by Turner S.
Why did you decide to get a Bearded Dragon?
What's your favorite part of having Cooper around?
I thought a Bearded Dragon would be cool and easy to care for. We are an animal family - we have dogs, cats and fish also.
Cooper has a great personality! He loves to chase lasers and loves to lounge on my shoulder. He's really chill and laid back which makes him an easy pet to have.
Did you do research before he arrived? I didn't do any research except what he couldn't eat... like avocados! They are deadly to him.
30
www.houstonpettalk.com
Is there anything you don't like about having Cooper as a pet? He is really easy to take care of, and
doesn't stink at all unless he takes a big poop. That doesn't happen often but when it does, it turns hard and it's easy to scrape off.
What is involved in caring for a Bearded Dragon? He doesn't require lots of cage cleaning and when I do clean, the cage isn't hard or difficult to clean. Mainly just scraping the hardened waste and shaking off the matt. I
clean the cage once a month on average. For his diet, I add powdered calcium to some of his food, but it's cheap and easy to get at a pet store. I just dust the food he eats on occasion, about once a month.
What does Cooper eat? Cooper is easy to feed and loves lots of the food that's in the fridge at any given time. I feed him 3 times a week and water him 2 times a week on average.
Do you have any regrets pertaining to Cooper? The only regret I have is that I spoiled him a little too much and taught him that I would hold him when he drinks his water from the sink faucet. He won't drink from a bowl now. But that's probably my fault.
What sort of advice would you give to someone who wants a Bearded Dragon? I would tell someone that a Bearded Dragon is a really fun and easy pet! Just like any pet, they require being handled and loved on so they can get used to it. I think some people want lizards because they think they don't need the same amount of human handling as other pets but that's not the case. They also require a large glass aquarium with appropriate light
and heat rock. So there is some expense in setting up the proper home.
Does Cooper have any unique or funny behaviors? I swear that Cooper smiles at me and knows my voice. He will even walk in place when he get's excited about something fun to eat...like crickets. He does love them, and loves chasing them (bought at pet store). I think he just enjoys being around the family.
Did You Know BEARDED DRAGON FACTS ❖
❖
Lifespan is 8-12 years in captivity with good care. The name "bearded dragon" refers to the "beard" of the lizard, the underside of the throat which turns black if they are stressed.
❖
❖
They are found throughout much of Australia. Require UVB light to help enable D3 synthesis and prevent metabolic bone disease. They also require UVA light.
DWARF HAMSTER “Speedy" and “Whiskers” owned by London W. What made you choose dwarf hamsters for pets? They are easy to take care of plus they are fun to play with and they are really cute.
What kind of research did you do prior to getting Speedy and Whiskers? I looked on the Internet to see how to care for small pets and figure out their cage requirements and diet.
What's the best part about having these two cuties? Getting to play with them, taking them out of their cage and letting them climb on you.
Is there anything not so great about dwarf hamsters that we should know about? They are nocturnal which means they are busy during the night, usually running on their wheel so they make a little noise.
32
www.houstonpettalk.com
Do you have any sage word of advice for potential hamster owners? I would tell them they are noisy at night so keep them out of your bedroom. Plus, make sure you change the cage because it can get stinky. Also, don't forget to close the cage because they will get out! If they get out, use a treat and a store bought "safe" hamster trap to catch them. Also, just know sometimes they fight!
Is there anything funny or
unusual that Speedy and Whiskers do? They like to run on their wheel together and they run so fast they flip each other out! Also, they stuff their checks with food like a chipmunk when they are really hungry.
How do you take care of them? We clean the cage weekly, give them fresh water and food, clean the running wheel, and change their fluff. Supplies are easy to find at any pet store or even the grocery store.
Did You Know: DWARF HAMSTER FACTS ❖ ❖
❖
Life span is 3 years Roborovskis are known for their speed and have been said to run an equivalent of four human marathons each night on average. Roborovski hamsters, also
❖
known as desert hamsters or Robos, are the smallest of three species of hamster. The require dry bedding such as recycled paper or wood pulp. Do not use pine or cedar. Never use cotton type bedding. It is very dangerous and can kill them.

Health Preparation For Successful Pet Ownership By: Sherry Johnson, Operations Manager VERGI Emergency and Critical Care Hospital www.vergi247.com
M
any people would love to be the proud parent of a pet, but contrary to popular beliefs, pet ownership is something that really has to be prepared for. Yes, preparation...things that are done to make something ready! In my book Your Pet's Best Life Now, the first chapter is all about preparation and it discusses things that you need to do prior to owning a pet. I can't stress enough how important research
40
www.houstonpettalk.com
is to becoming a successful pet owner. If you want a pet, then you need to be a responsible pet parent and know what is involved both financially as well as socially. This includes everything from food, toys, beds, medical, training and so much more. If you have a family, then they need to be involved in the final decision. Learn the different breeds and the pet that will work with your family. Remember, when a family is involved, especially
children, it has to be a pet that will work for everyone in the household. One crucial thing to think about is whether your current housing situation will work with a pet. Your housing may determine whether your pet will be an inside pet or outside pet, big or small, active or sluggish. Do your research and take advantage of the plethora of information available online. Just make sure you know what you're getting into beforehand. The best investments are those that are researched and well planned. Here's a snippet from that chapter in my book: “In a world where all types of information is available right under our fingertips, it’s amazing how we haphazardly decide to become pet owners. More thought and a lot of
research should be put into the idea. You can’t wake up one morning and say, “Hey I think a pet would be a great addition to this family”, without talking to your family first, and doing some extensive research. Treat getting a pet as you would buying your dream house or that fancy new Beemer X5 you’ve been eyeing at the BMW dealership. These things have been on your mind for a while and you know exactly what you expect once you’ve acquired them. Maintenance, property upkeep, possible repairs, Insurance, etc… The same holds true when deciding on pet ownership. The family has to sit down and talk about it. Seriously, have a family meeting, and during your family meeting calculate the amount of time you all may or may not have to give to a pet. Take into consideration that any pet, no matter how large or small, will always have a need.” For everyone that wants a pet, remember, it’s ok to wait on getting one if you’re not sure. Don’t allow the stereotype of a complete family package, spouse, house, children and pets to influence your decision. After you have your family meeting and before making any final pet decisions, remember there are things that still need to be researched and considered.

Sago Palms: Beautiful Ornamental Plant or Deadly Poison? By: Colleen Willms, DVM, DACVECC Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists www.gcvs.com
B
eing in a sub-tropical environment like we are on the Gulf Coast, sago palms are popular ornamental plants that landscapers love to plant and veterinarians loathe! These palms, which really are not true palms, are very common in Texas and are growing in your yard or at the very least in your neighbor’s yard. Animals are very curious and without proper supervision, they could chew on this deadly plant and succumb to liver failure and death. Sago palms are both savory and sweet, thus dogs and cats are attracted to eating them. They are especially attracted to the younger plants with “softer” leaves and mature plant’s “ball-like” seed pods, as they resemble chew toys or bones. The sago palm is not a palm at all. It is a member of the plant family, Cycadaceae, which has been around since prehistoric times. These plants contain a very potent and deadly toxin, called
42
www.houstonpettalk.com
cycasin, which incidentally is also toxic to humans. Ingestion or chewing on any part of the plant i.e. leaves, bark, seed pods leads to sago palm toxicity. If you suspect that your pet has chewed on or ingested ANY part of a sago palm, no matter what the quantity, please seek veterinary attention imme-
diately! Clinical signs post exposure includes vomiting (oftentimes with fresh blood), diarrhea, depression, bruising, jaundice (or yellow skin or whites of the eyes), lack of coordination, coma or seizures. Vomiting typically starts within a few minutes to hours of
ingestion, so please check your pet’s vomitus for plant parts. Liver failure can happen 2-3 days post-ingestion. Aggressive treatment MUST be started immediately. Unfortunately there is no antidote, so the key is prevention. Treatment is aimed at aggressive supportive care to help promote liver health with IV fluids, anti-nausea medications, activated charcoal/ cholestyramine to prevent continued toxin absorp-
to have escaped acute liver failure, it is very important to realize that delayed liver toxicity can ensue 4-6 months post ingestion. Thus, serial bloodwork must be done to monitor for this tragic development. The best advice veterinary professionals have for our beloved pet population is to remove sago palms from your yard, neighborhood and landscaper’s planting repertoire. Prevention is the key! Should you elect to have

Canine Influenza Is Your Dog At Risk? By: Dr. Mark Silberman Southwest Animal Clinic www.swacvet.com
What is dog flu? Dog flu is a contagious respiratory disease. It is caused by two specific Type A canine influenza viruses (CIVs): H3N8 and H3N2.
Dogs with CIV H3N2 may show more severe signs than dogs with CIV H3N8—or they may show no
Is dog flu a very serious illness? Both CIV H3N2 and CIV H3N8 are contagious and nearly all dogs exposed to dog flu will become infected. About 80% of infected dogs will show symptoms. Severity—and the symptoms themselves—will vary from dog to dog. Both types can be a more serious

My dog has been vaccinated against CIV H3N8. Does that vaccine also help protect against CIV H3N2? At this time, it is unknown whether the current CIV H3N8 vaccine will offer cross-protection against CIV H3N2. Although flu vaccines
I’ve been hearing a lot about a new strain of CIV. What does that mean? The “new” CIV, H3N2, was identified in South Korea in 2006 and has been reported in several Asian countries. It was first identified in dogs in the U.S. in early 2015. The first dog flu vaccine introduced in the U.S. helps protect dogs against the CIV H3N8. CIV H3N8 was first identified in dogs in the U.S. in 2004.
As with flu in humans, symptoms and symptom severity may vary from dog to dog. Symptoms of CIV H3N2 are similar to those of CIV H3N8. They may include reduced appetite, high fever, cough, runny nose and lethargy. Symptoms can persist for several weeks.

What are the symptoms of dog flu?
How is dog flu transmitted? Both types of dog flu can be passed from dog to dog in some of the same ways we pass flu among ourselves. Droplets from sneezing or coughing and contact with contaminated objects are the main culprits. The virus also can survive on human skin—and for at least a day on clothing—so we can transmit the virus too.
What can I do to keep my pet safe? If there is a dog flu outbreak in your area, be aware that risk or exposure to the virus may be increased at dog parks, doggy day care centers, communal water bowls and in other settings where dogs share toys and come into close contact with each other. Wash your dog’s toys, bowls and bedding regularly. When you’ve come into contact with other dogs, wash your hands thoroughly before handling your own pet. Avoid contact with other pets, as the virus can persist on clothing and other surfaces for at least 24 hours.
What can I do to keep other pets safe? If you are concerned that your dog may be showing signs of dog flu, contact your veterinarian and keep your dog at home. Until you’ve received examination or test results from your veterinarian, keep your dog separated from
other pets. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling your own pet.
Can humans catch dog flu? There is no evidence that CIV H3N2 or H3N8 can be transmitted to humans.
Can cats catch dog flu? There is no evidence that CIV H3N8 can lead to clinical disease in cats. CIV H3N2 has been documented to cause infection and respiratory illness in cats.
What is canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC), and what does it have to do with dog flu? CIRDC refers to many
different bacteria and viruses that can cause respiratory disease in dogs. On the basis of symptoms alone, it generally is impossible to determine which of those pathogens is causing disease. There are vaccines that help protect against many of the pathogens that can lead to CIRDC, including dog flu. Dog-to-dog contact or contaminated objects can spread CIRDC. Environmental factors (such as dog parks) and host-related factors (such as a dog’s overall health) also can play a part in the development of CIRDC.
What treatments are available for dog flu?
medication. Supportive care, such as making sure a pet is resting, eating and staying well hydrated, can help ease some symptoms and help prevent worsening of others. Sometimes antibiotics also are given to treat or guard against secondary infections. Your veterinarian can talk with you about specific treatment options for your pet’s symptoms. Keep dogs and cats with signs of respiratory infection away from other pets until your veterinarian tells you otherwise. Source: Canine Influenza Backgrounder. What is Cat Flu?
C
at flu is the general name given to a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract in cats. It is a common disease in cats and although not usually fatal in previously healthy adult cats it can cause death in kittens and immuno-suppressed older cats. Cat flu is most commonly caused by the Feline Herpes Virus-1 (FHV1), or Feline Calicivirus (FCV). Feline Herpes Virus is the more serious of the two. It is also known as Feline Virus Rhinotracheitis which is an older term for the virus. Feline Herpes virus infects the membranes of the eyes, the lining of the nose, pharynx, sinuses, and throat. Cat flu in general is a very contagious disease and can spread quickly from cat to cat.
How is Feline Herpes Virus and Feline Calicivirus spread? Infected cats should be kept isolated from other cats. The virus spreads from cat to cat contact and with contact from the discharge from the nose and eyes. It can also spread from the cat sneezing much the same way a cold is spread in humans. The virus can live outside the cat's body for a period of time and so infection can be transmitted via bowls, bedding, cages or in fact anything your cat comes into contact with.
How can I prevent Cat Flu? There are vaccinations available for Feline Herpes Virus-1 and Feline Calicivirus (FCV) Discuss a vaccination regime with your veterinarian.

Tail End Summer Pet Safety Tips By: Rebecca Burwell-Botello
H
ouston summers are notoriously hot, up to 107°F, yet every year we are amazed when the blistering heat arrives in full force. Our pets also notice the change but there are lots of ways to keep your pet from over heating during the summer. Here are our favorite tips for keeping cool when it's too hot for comfort in the Texas summer heat.
Mix a little wet food with your pet's favorite treats (or catnip for cats), fill the bottom of a plastic cup about 1/4" up and freeze overnight for an irresistible treat your pets will be happy to munch on. Watch for heat exhaustion, heavy panting, dry or reddened gums, thick saliva, or wobbly legs are signs of possible heatstroke. Don't put your pup in cold water, but move them inside and place a cool wet towel over him or her, re-wetting as needed. Use sunscreen on short haired pets. If you can see your pet's skin through their fur, so can the sun. Protect them with a pet

Put off walks until the evening. If it is too hot for you, it's too hot for your pet. If you wouldn't walk bare foot on the asphalt, neither should your dog. If you must walk during the day, consider getting your pup some shoes. Make frozen treats for your dogs (and cats too). If you don't have time to make the awesome treats below, you can make these quick frozen snacks:
safe sunscreen (like Epi-pet Sun Protector Sunscreen) particularly on ears, bellies, around the eyes on cats, and on noses. Of course be careful of sensitive areas like nose and eyes, and never spray or apply directly in eyes or noses. Instead, use your hands. Never, no not ever, leave your pet in a car that is not running air conditioning. Interior car temperatures can rise by 19°F in only 10 minutes, even with the windows cracked. For absolute safety, keep your pets indoors as much as possible. This will definitely ensure that your best friend stays comfortable all summer long.

Conservation Corner As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo or other local organizers such as the TWRC Wildlife Center. This issue, we are highlighting efforts to protect sharks. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.

SHARKS! Most Feared Animals Need Our Protection, Too
W
hen visiting the Zoo, you may see our sharks, rays and sea turtles. The ocean is close to Houston’s heart with the Gulf of Mexico just down the road. Keeping the ocean healthy is a high priority to the Houston Zoo and sharks do just that. This misunderstood species works hard to keep a healthy
balance in our oceans. The Houston Zoo, and all of our guests, support marine wildlife organization, Mar Alliance in Central America. Mar Alliance is doing great work for big fish like sharks and other wildlife in the sea. We know that local involvement and employment is critical for the success of any long-term conservation
effort and as such, we require all of our conservation partners to be working towards local ownership and management of all the conservation and research programs. Mar Alliance hires local people to carry out monitoring and awareness efforts in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico. Houston Zoo staff regularly visits the Mar Alliance in Belize to assist with their marine wildlife protection efforts. We work alongside local fisherman who have become some of the area’s best conservationists. The fishers have a vast understanding of the ocean and it greatly enhances the research and conservation efforts. All of the local fisherman have grown up by the sea and began free diving for
conch and lobster to support their families at a very young age. They can free dive up to 100 feet! In the past, local fishermen were taught by previous generations to fear and dislike sharks. They speak about seeing hammerheads and other species while free diving when they were young and being very afraid. The fishermen that have joined the Mar Alliance team have had their perception of sharks transformed. The conservation and research activities have guided them to develop a great understanding of the shark’s behavior and a deep respect their role in the health of the ocean. Mar Alliance protection
efforts include swimming with sharks to monitor, capture, and tag the incredible animals. These fishermen have become the best advocates for sharks and are influencing a lot of change in their communities to protect them. You can protect sharks in your everyday life by eating seafood that is responsibly caught. Even though they are not the target, countless sharks are killed when fishing is not done properly. Download Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch consumer guide to learn which seafood options are best choices or good alternatives. The app is available from the Apple
Store or Google Play to help you identify shark and ocean-safe seafood. Your visit to the Zoo helps save sharks in the wild. The Zoo supports more than
25 wildlife conservation projects in ten countries around the world and your admission ticket strengthens that support.
