DECEMBER 2017

Editorial

H

appy Holidays! What a great time of year–we get to celebrate with family and friends, pause to reflect on 2017 and think ahead to our dreams for tomorrow. And what a year it has been! As I write this, I'm sitting at my makeshift office in a friends house, still displaced from my home that flooded during Hurricane Harvey. Little did I know on that fateful day my family left our home by boat, that I would still be struggling to put my home back together. It has been a challenge for sure, but it's also been reassuring to know that people have our backs and are more than willing to help in a time of crisis. Our city took quite a blow but we also showed our Houston Strong spirit by helping one another through the storm and beyond. And that includes our animals! So many people stepped up to rescue, vet and provide homes for stranded dogs, cats, horses, farm animals and more. In reflecting back on this unprecedented flooding, I can say I've experienced a myriad of emotions from fear and sadness, to feeling very grateful for the help offered by so many. There have

Issue 11: Volume 17 www.houstonpettalk.com

been some valuable lessons learned as well. But mostly, I've found that the flood and loss of my belongings prompted me to be more aware of how I can live with less "stuff" and that I'm blessed to have a healthy family, friends that support me, a job that gives me purpose and of course, a World Series win for our home team! I know many of you have struggled as well or you've been the one reaching out the helping hand, so I just wanted to have a big group hug to wrap up this tumultuous year LOL! Looking ahead to the Christmas holidays, I'm not sure where I'll physically be, but I will definitely hang on to my traditions with my family, no matter where we end up because tradition to me is so grounding. This issue is one of those traditions, as we embark on the 10th year of our Annual Notable Houstonians Values Issue, which is my favorite issue of the year. Why is it my favorite? Because I get to meet the most interesting, diverse, talented, giving people! This year, with a little luck and help from my friend Wendy Phillips of Haute Pets Mobile Grooming, PetTalk was fortunate to get iconic rock star Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top

Rock On! If ever there was a Notable Houstonian, iconic rock star Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top is definitely among The Top! Billy and “Gringo” make quite a striking cover. Shown here, Billy with Editor Michelle Mantor and Photographer Evin Thayer, plus a tasty bottle of Pura Vida Tequila, of which Billy is an investor (learn more on page 54). Read Billy’s take on the Value of TIME in our annual Notable Houstonians Values feature.

to participate by gracing our cover with "Gringo" and sharing his thoughts about the value of TIME. Billy was in town for a concert just days after the hurricane and he was so kind to share his TIME with us and also donate part of the proceeds from the concert to hurricane victims. I owe a special thank you to Stewart Skloss for assisting with the details. Stewart is President of Pura Vida Tequila, of which Gringo is the "spokesdog". Check out the winner and runners up of our ZZ Top Pet Look A Like contest on page 20. Stewart secured a bottle of Pura Vida signed by Billy for our winner, along with prizes from sponsors VERGI/ 24/7 and Haute Pets Mobile Grooming. I hope you enjoy the words of wisdom from our Notable Houstonians and as always, I thank you for your loyalty to PetTalk and support of our advertising sponsors who make the publication possible. Enjoy your holiday with your family, both two-legged and four-legged, and may 2018 be your best year yet!

hat is TIME...? For some, there’s never enough. For others,

it’s about great moments enjoyed through a day. And, having a good Time is, for most, the aim from morning and onward through noon and into the night. There’s the imminent value of keeping track of Time. Knowing “when” is all about Time. And, as many have come to know, Time sometimes flies. Or not... It can be favored or feared, elusive or stand-still, fleeting or long lasting, constant or evaporative. Whatever it may be is certainly of the moment. Time is absolute. And, after all, it is a singular subject. As the saying goes, a man with one clock always knows what Time it is, a man with two is never sure. Enjoy...and... have a good Time!

W

hat does it mean to PERSEVERE? The technical definition is “steadfastness

in doing something despite difficulty”, and honestly – that’s a pretty good definition. I have worked as a veterinary surgeon at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists (GCVS) since our doors opened in 1989, and have lived, worked, and raised my family here in Houston. No year has been as difficult as the one we experienced post hurricane Harvey, but the courage, teamwork and determination of our GCVS family has redefined the word Perseverance. During the historic flooding that devastated Houston, our 54,000 square-foot, multilevel hospital sustained significant damage. Water levels rose above ceilings on all levels within minutes. The immediate priority was to ensure the well-being of our patients and staff members. Shortly thereafter came many crucial decisions that would determine the fate of our organization, including finding ways to continue care for existing patients, relocating to a temporary facility, and locating and designing a new permanent home. Throughout this process, the dedication, resolve and heart of our GCVS family truly shone. Despite cramped working spaces, long hours and changing schedules, our staff covered multiple remote locations (thanks to the generosity of the Houston veterinary community), and extended emergency hours at our 3800 Southwest Freeway location to continue to provide exceptional veterinary care. They are the embodiment of Perseverance, and I am proud to be part of such a hardworking, caring, and compassionate family of professionals. Despite the loss of our main hospital building on West Loop South, we have not lost Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists. GCVS is not a building or location—it is a family that has Persevered, and remains proudly committed to the pets and people of our amazing city as we work out of our new temporary facility at I-10 and Wirt Road and design the new 82,000 square-foot hospital that is scheduled to open late 2018.

S

ince I was a young child, my parents have always told me that I displayed a deep concern for others and an urge to help those in need. This intrinsic COMPASSION toward others continued throughout my teenage years and led me to eventually choose a career in SpeechLanguage Pathology. I completed my bachelor and masters degrees in this field and have had many incredible experiences along the way in which I have been able to put my desire to help others to work. I feel extremely fortunate to have chosen a career in which I am able to be of assistance to those suffering from a multitude of impairments and in which I am given the opportunity to make an enormous difference in their lives. My husband Lance, a pitcher for the Houston Astros, and I, met in high school and his similar Compassion for helping others, especially animals, is a major reason, I believe, that we have always been such a great fit for each other. In 2016, we decided to create our own foundation, the Lance McCullers, Jr. Foundation, in order to help advocate and raise funds for as many local animal rescues as possible. Through our foundation, we provide medical care for critically injured animals in shelters. We also have a long term goal of one day making Houston a “no-kill” city and opening up our own dog sanctuary. I am proud to say that we have raised tens of thousands of dollars and saved hundreds of animals from being euthanized over the last year. I encourage the city of Houston, and of the world in general, to become more aware of the value of Compassion in which we show love and sympathy for one another, allowing us to make our world a better place for all. As the Dalai Lama once said, “Love and Compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive”. Houston PetTalk Magazine

Kindness Senior Minister, Unity of Houston

MICHAEL GOTT WITH ADOPTABLE KITTEN FROM CAP

I

’ve noticed people can sometimes lose their manners on Facebook. And in traffic. Whenever we are separated from others in some small way–through the anonymity of the internet or the bubble of our individual cars—it becomes easier to be cruel and harsh with each other. Our animal companions can teach us a lot about KINDNESS. My last rescue was a long, lanky 65-pound terrier mix named Gracie. I was living in northern Nevada at the time. She had been abandoned and was found wandering along the north shore of Lake Tahoe in the middle of winter with six feet of snow on the ground. She was terrified, skinny, and mistrustful, but surviving somehow. Once we had bonded, she couldn’t bear to be apart from me. Major separation anxiety. It was so hard—by far the hardest experience I’ve ever known with an animal companion. Her coping behavior when the anxiety got to her was to find food, or something that she thought might be food. I came home many times to the garbage can being turned over and contents strewn. I bought a can with a secure lid. She took it off. She was a smart girl. And determined. I eventually had to place the garbage in a closed pantry and that worked. Until she learned to open the door. A change of hardware finally solved it. Without opposable thumbs, she couldn’t turn the small knob I installed. I wish I could say that I was a perfect petparent. I wasn’t. I yelled sometimes. And then I’d see her cower and my heart broke. She had been through so much. Couldn’t I extend myself in Kindness to this amazing creature? I got better. She got better. She repaid my Kindness a million times over. We both healed. I became a Kinder man.

M

y fondest memories all the way back to my childhood are some of the most simple moments of love, laughter and quality time with friends and family. As an only child, I consider my closest and dearest friends to be family. I think this is such an important role to hold in anyone's life. To be a good friend requires many attributes but one I feel is most important is LOYALTY. So much of what is best about us is bundled up in our love for family and friends. Loyalty provides a measure of stability to me which is so important. It is key on so many levels. To be a good mother to my two boys, I must be Loyal to their needs and happiness first and foremost. Being a mother to my beautiful boys is the greatest gift I have been blessed to receive. I strive to show them how to be Loyal to themselves, their goals, their passions and to be their own advocate and to be the very best at whatever they set their minds too. To be a good business owner, I must be Loyal to my clients and provide a safe place that allows them to share their goals and desires in order to help facilitate the "best version of themselves". This requires listening to their needs and assisting them with the tools needed to establish their personal goals and assist them as they grow into the person they see internally, I assist externally. This is so rewarding–I truly love what I do! I consider it a gift everyday. Lastly, my sweet doggie Bravo is Loyal in the most organic sense of the word, even though he was abused and weak when we adopted him from the Poodle Rescue. He still had an abundance of loyalty and trust left to share with both of my boys and myself. He became a part of our family and has shown unconditional love and Loyalty that is absolutely priceless. Anyone can give us attention for short periods of time or compliment us when the time seems right. But someone who loves you and will show you respect, honesty, trust and Loyalty are kept near and dear to my heart, be it pets or people. It is truly one of the greatest attributes one can share.

hile the concept of PREPARATION may seem more like a formality than a Value, I have come to feel that while many know of its importance, very few take it to heart. To be Prepared shows consideration, dedication, and focus not just for yourself in the fulfillment of a task, but for everyone else affected by that task as well. Success is a product of Preparation; being Prepared to take the opportunity presented, or to avoid the folly of unexpected circumstances. As a band, Oceans of Slumber operates from a place of Preparation. We

36

www.houstonpettalk.com

remain Prepared for the opportunity of tours and shows that may arise. These opportunities have the habit of being scheduled quite suddenly, sometimes with little notice. It is a necessary and upheld aspect of our musicality to hone our crafts and maintain a level of proficiency even when things seem idle. I believe a foundation of this is what has afforded us the success we continue to expand on today. Failure is not an option and to let others down, when so much is expected of us, is something we would never do. Our fans are our life blood. Alternately, being Prepared for disaster is something many of us have

had to come to terms with this past year. Hurricane Harvey caught many off guard even with advanced warning. Meadowlake Pet Resort & Training Center has become a place very near and dear to my heart. Their ability to mobilize employees during a time of such distress, and to streamline a response that allowed for the utmost of care for all their furry residents, proves nothing less than their strong foundation in Preparation and consideration for those that count on them the most. Seneca, the Roman Stoic philosopher, said it best, “Luck is what happens when Preparation meets opportunity".

hristmas 2004, a neighbor of mine found a dog thrown in a trash bin behind a gas station. If not for the neighbor, this dog would have been dumped and crushed in a garbage truck. My neighbor was HONEST enough to know he couldn’t care for him. This presented me with an opportunity, an opportunity I Honestly did not want. I already had Maggie, a black lab mix, who was in the last year of her life. Nevertheless, I took in this dog and we named him PV because he was full of @#*@ and Vinegar. That night, while feeding Maggie and PV, a blue heeler mix, I put the food in the bowls and PV started to growl. I was taken aback as I thought he was food aggressive and was growling at Maggie. We had a discussion, and I explained to him that we don’t growl. He looked at me with the sorriest eyes as if to say he understood. The next morning, he again growled as I was placing food in the dishes. Again, we had a talk. Then it dawned on me, it wasn’t really a growl. It was a noise he makes when he is excited and happy with what is going on around him. He was actually letting me know he appreciated being treated as one of the family and having a full bowl of food to himself. He was just being Honest. He was Happy.

As PV grew older and my time was occupied with work, we decided to find him a younger sibling. As a belated Christmas gift, we adopted Zoey, and we celebrated Christmas in July when we rescued Chloe as she was being led into the euthanasia room at BARC. In between we took in Charlie, a puppy-cat, off of the streets. While Zoey was a planned gift, Chloe and Charlie, well, Honestly, I wasn’t looking for either of them at the

time. However, that doesn’t mean they weren’t looking for us. I Honestly can say finding PV was the best thing that ever happened to me followed by Zoey, Charlie, Chloe, oh, and yes, my girlfriend Julie who PV introduced me to at the park. I wouldn’t change a thing about my life because all of the roads led to me being in the right place and time to find ALL OF THEM.

his is my rescue horse Freedom. You’ll hear a lot more about him in the January issue (the first equine issue of PetTalk) where I'll chronicle our journey together from the moment I saw his starving body and beaten down spirit in a photograph to this moment when he is healthy in body and mind. Not to steal the thunder of next month’s feature story, but I felt compelled to write about my experience with Freedom for my essay this year because it has been so profound. He has affected me in so many ways that it was hard for me to decide which Value is most germane - it could be LEARNING because he has taught me so much; it could be COMPASSION because that’s what ultimately pushed me to rescue him; it could be DETERMINATION because that’s what it took for me to stay the course with my fateful decision to adopt him. I could go on with more but what kept coming to mind was how he represents overcoming my fears and that on every level I was taking a RISK to bring him into my life. Although I have some bravado in certain areas, in others I am a self-proclaimed scaredy cat. I don’t like fast cars or boats, I don’t like sitting in the passenger seat when my kids are driving, I don’t like flying, I don’t like heights, I don’t like horror or evil genre movies, etc. etc. etc. Add to the list a healthy fear of horses (and snakes, and sharks). Although fearful, I’ve always thought horses were majestic, beautiful and strong. They fascinate me and it seems like it would be the best feeling to gallop down the beach on a fabulous horse, hair blowing in the wind, breathing in the salt air and feeling overcome with a sense of being free. But for me, that’s a Hallmark Channel commercial - something that seems so perfect but is fraught with many caveats in real life. For one, being afraid of falling off LOL! I bare my soul of my fears to you, even at the Risk of being judged irrational:), because I want to underscore that it has taken and continues to take me reaching down into that place of vulnerability and pushing myself through the overwhelming feelings of anxiety, insecurity and self-doubt to stay on this path with Freedom. I stick to my commitments as best I can but there have certainly been plenty of times when I just didn’t think I could stay the course with this animal who definitely needed saving. First and foremost, I’ve had to face my basic fear with a horse - getting physically injured.

They are big, strong animals and accidents happen. Accidents that can be serious or deadly, so I battle that cognitive thought ALOT. I used to be afraid to pet a horse but now I’m actually riding one (albeit not very gracefully or adeptly, but one step at a time). I have to admit that I thought the fear of getting injured would subside as I got used to being around horses but it’s still there, front and center, because I understand the Risk is always there for injury and it just comes with the territory. Taking a physical Risk with becoming a “horse woman” is only part of the picture. Another major risk for me was the financial aspect. I don’t live where I can have a horse, so the boarding, feeding, veterinary care and so on is significant with horses. And in Freedom’s situation, he needed gelding, chiropractic care, and definitely training. You can’t really adopt an abused stallion and not plan on training! Perhaps a more significant Risk is providing fuel to the doubters in my world and failing at this seemingly crazy-brained idea of mine to adopt a horse. Plenty of people said “What?? You are afraid of horses, you live in a townhouse, your schedule is already full, you know nothing about horses and you’re going to adopt an abused stallion? Are you nuts?” Yes, I’m nuts. The doubters certainly got some fodder on the financial Risk when my home flooded during Harvey. I took a big financial hit and I admit having a horse to pay for each month is a burden, but one I accept with grace because I knew the risk when I made the decision. I’ll find a way. Risk is the intentional interaction with uncertainty. I still get nervous on the ride over every time I go to see him. I’m not in a comfort zone but I am growing as a person. If we don’t take Risks, make ourselves a bit uncomfortable, we don’t move forward, we don’t expand our feelings of self-reliance and we ultimately may live with regrets of dreams not realized. I don’t want to regret that I “loved the idea of a horse, but was afraid to experience them”. I’m so glad my scaredy cat self leaned into the fear and stepped into the unknown - Freedom is an enigmatic, confident, fun, loving teacher and he is truly the reward for my risk. Freedom and I both wish you the best of holidays and if there is something tugging at your soul that you are afraid to try - lean in, push away the obstacles and open your heart to the opportunity and you’ll be rewarded with the joy of accomplishment.

Christmas is a time to find commonality with others, give hospitality to those in need and spread goodwill through a message of hope. Let’s experience these true gifts of Christmas this holiday season and throughout the year to come. As always, thank you to our military for your bravery, courage and gift of freedom. Best wishes to all for a magical Christmas and joyous 2018. Houston PetTalk Magazine

ZOONOSIS in Dogs & Cats CAN YOU GET A DISEASE FROM YOUR PET? By Dr. Laura Noaker | www.vergi247.com

D

ogs and cats have been sharing our environment for more than 10,000 years. As pets, they bring major psychological well-being to our modern urbanized society. However, they can still be a source of human infection by various zoonosis pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi.

What is Zoonosis? It’s a disease which can be passed between animals and humans. In fact, major modern diseases such as Ebola virus disease and salmonellosis are zoonoses. HIV was a zoonotic disease transmitted to humans in the early part of the 20th century, though it has now evolved to a separate human-only disease. This being said, cats and dogs still can be a source of human infection by various zoonotic pathogens. Among emerging or re-emerging zoonoses, include viral diseases, such as rabies (mainly from the dog pet trade or travel abroad), but also feline cowpox and newly recognized noroviruses, rotaviruses or influenza viruses can

48

www.houstonpettalk.com

sicken our pets and be transmitted to humans. There are also bacterial zoonoses which are bacteria transmitted by bites or scratches, such as pasteurellosis or cat scratch disease, leading to severe clinical manifestations in people because of their age, immune status or closeness with their pets. Humans are not likely to catch a disease through their pets, but in rare cases it can happen. Usually contracting a pet-borne disease requires very close contact with animals or their excretions, so zoonotic diseases can be avoided with common sense, cleanliness and regular pet examinations and vaccinations.

Common pet-borne illnesses that can make people sick:

Salmonellosis This bacteria generally makes its way into human bodies through contaminated food. The bacteria can be passed through animal feces and may cause symptoms like fever, vomiting, diarrhea and exhaustion.

Roundworms Roundworm eggs and microscopic adult worms can be excreted in the feces of infected dogs and cats. Children may be at a higher risk because they play near pets or touch infected feces and put their hands into their mouths.

Cat Scratch Fever This bacteria is usually transmitted from cats to humans through scratches. The bacteria is found on nails or claws and can cause high fever, loss of appetite, weakness and swollen lymph nodes.

Strep Throat Though your pet is probably not the culprit bringing strep into your household each year, the possibility does exist. Recently, researchers have found that it’s more likely that people are infecting their pets.

Ringworm A fungal infection of the skin, hair or nails, ringworm starts as a rapidly spreading hairless, circular lesion. Humans can be infected by contact with infected animals like cats, dogs, mice, rats and guinea pigs.

Scabies Also called sarcoptic mange, scabies is a skin disease caused by itch mites which burrow under the skin. Scabies cause intense itching and scratching that can result in severe eczema. Humans can be infected through contact with infected animals. Pet-owning households with young children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems need to be aware that their animals can play host to disease-causing microorganisms. It’s just one more reason to take our pets for regular visits to a veterinarian.

CRITICAL CARE Doctors to the Rescue THE STORY OF HOW "CHIP" WAS SAVED By Kate Lawrence | Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists | www.gcvs.com

T

here he was. A wet, shivering little puppy on the side of the road, found in the days after Hurricane Harvey devastated the city with historic flooding. Most of Houston was still underwater – including the main building for our hospital, Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists (GCVS). A good Samaritan saw the puppy, picked him up, and braved the flood waters to rush him to the secondary GCVS location at 3800 Southwest Freeway. Historically the Neurology & Neurosurgery location, this facility was now serving as the home base for several of the GCVS departments that had been displaced when the main building flooded,

50

www.houstonpettalk.com

including our Critical Care department. When the puppy, now named Chip, was first assessed by the Critical Care specialists at GCVS, he was in shock from blood loss due to severe hemorrhagic (bloody) diarrhea. In addition, he was suffering from severe dehydration, severe hypotension (low blood pressure), severe hypothermia, hypoglycemia, severe anemia due to blood loss, and was significantly underweight. Chip’s condition was so severe that the doctors at GCVS gave him only a 50 percent chance of survival, and humane euthanasia was discussed as an option to keep him from suffering. One of the doctors who was part

of Chip’s treatment team described the scene: “Chip was laying on the table with everything going wrong for him except for being in our care, and we chose to test him for Parvo and give him a chance. He was negative!” That’s when things really started turning around for Chip. One of the Critical Care staff doctors brought in one of his own dogs to donate blood for a blood transfusion. Chip had been diagnosed with a severe hookworm infection, which helped explain his critical condition and blood loss. Hookworms are a fairly common condition for puppies in our area that are treated routinely by general practice veterinarians, however due to

the circumstances surrounding Hurricane Harvey, Chip didn’t get the preventative care he needed to control the hookworms before the infestation became lifethreatening. In addition to the aggressive IV fluids and blood transfusion Chip was already receiving, Chip’s Critical Care team was supplementing him with Dextrose to counteract his hypoglycemia, and began immediate treatment for the hookworms. Chip was ultimately hospitalized for four days in the Critical Care unit at the 3800 Southwest Freeway GCVS location, and as he recovered, so did the city. Just like our neighbors in Houston that banded together to save their loved ones, our GCVS family – along with several nearby veterinary hospitals – pulled together to save the life of one sweet little puppy. Chip is now doing great, recently got his third round of puppy shots and a microchip, and generally behaving exactly like a four month old puppy should by digging all over the yard, jumping on the furniture without permission, and harassing all of the other dogs to play with him all the time (including the one who donated the blood that saved his life). Chip’s story ends in the best possible way. He found his forever home…with one of the very doctors who saved his life!

THE WAITING is the Hardest Part PERDY HAS TIME TO BLOSSOM

By Barbara Williamson | Best Friends Animal Society | bestfriends.org

T

hroughout their 10-year marriage, Patrick and Julie Cooney have shared a mutual passion to rescue dogs, some they kept and others they provide a refuge, getting them ready for adoption into permanent homes. “We’ve been dog-less since February when the last of our three dogs passed away and we just needed some time to honor the memory of our dogs. Then I was reading the Houston Chronicle article about the need for fosters for the dogs Best Friends has at NRG arena. I put the newspaper with that article on the table with a note for my wife:

54

www.houstonpettalk.com

“WE SAW PROBABLY SEVEN OR EIGHT DOGS THAT CAUGHT OUR EYE. BUT PERDY WAS SO QUIET AND RESERVED. WE THOUGHT ABOUT IT OVERNIGHT AND WE JUST REALLY FELT SHE NEEDED US THE MOST.” ‘This is what we need to do.’ When Patrick arrived home that night, Julie agreed. “Ok let’s go look at some dogs.” Julie notes, “We saw probably seven or eight dogs that caught our eye. But Perdy was so quiet and reserved. We thought about it overnight and we just really felt she needed us the most.” Perdy was tentative at first when she was walked out

by one of the dog caregivers to meet Patrick. Her tail was tucked, her head was down and she appeared hesitant. Patrick kneeled very slowly and gently rubbed Perdy’s ears. He offered her dry dog food which she ate out of his hand. She slowly relaxed, leaned in to him and closed her eyes. “I promise you Perdy, your life is going to be awesome.

We’ve got time for you to come out of your shell, take all the time you need.” Best Friends came in on the ground in Houston, in partnership with Harris County Public Health (HCPH) Animal Shelter to house pets displaced from Hurricane Harvey at NRG Arena, working to reunite families, and find foster homes for those pets not reclaimed. Best Friends is also partnering with Houston PetSet which is serving as umbrella for smaller local rescues involved in the effort to find good solutions for the dogs and cats affected by the hurricane. Best Friends has a big need for temporary foster homes for the dogs still in need of a home and would greatly appreciate your help. Foster caregivers have the first opportunity to adopt their foster pet if they choose. Fostering can be very rewarding and for those that have time and the space in their home to temporarily care for these pets, you can have a large impact on these animals who've been through so much stress. We anticipate the pets will need foster care for a minimum of 14 days. Please email harveyfoster@bestfriends.org for more information, or visit bestfriends.org/ hurricaneharvey.

CATIOS Cat Condos

SOLVING THE INDOOR/OUTDOOR DILEMMA By Cheri Brennan | www.catiospaces.com

C

ats naturally want to be outside where they can experience the sights, sounds and stimulation of the natural world. While indoor cats live longer than those allowed to roam freely, they still long for fresh air and the enrichment of the outdoors. Cat owners who wrestle with the “indoor/outdoor” dilemma can have the advantages of both worlds with a safe outdoor enclosure called a catio, or cat patio. Beloved pets can enjoy time outdoors while their guardians have peace of mind knowing their four-legged companion is protected from predators, poisons and other hazards. Another benefit? Fewer visits to the veterinarian. Catios come in a variety of

56

www.houstonpettalk.com

designs and sizes, ranging from compact window boxes to elaborate, free-standing structures with space for human seating and interaction. Cats can enter a catio through a cat door installed in a window, wall or door for 24/7 access. From small and simple, to large and luxurious, catios can complement a home and garden. Cynthia Chomos, a catio designer and founder of Catio Spaces, built her first catio for her tabby Serena to be able to safely enjoy bird watching and sunbathing. Her pampered feline now has four, various-sized catios offering year-round enjoyment. It’s all part of Serena’s duties as the “quality assurance expert” for the business Chomos launched in response to a

need for safe and visually appealing cat enclosures. Cats and their owners aren’t the only beneficiaries of catios, suggests Jennifer Hillman of The Humane Society of the United States. “Providing cats with outdoor access in enclosures ensures we are good cat owners and good neighbors. It means

being responsible for wildlife, responsible for community space and responsible for the safety of our cats.” A variety of catio resources are available including DIY plans for those who want to build their own or hire a carpenter. Plans include a materials list, a tools list, step-by- step instructions and diagrams plus tips for decorating and incorporating cat-safe plants or other accessories to promote exercise and enrichment. The do-ityourself catio plans, available as downloadable PDFs, are priced from $39.95 to $69.95. Catio Spaces donates 10% from each sale to an animal welfare organization. Catios are becoming a popular trend in feline enrichment and safety. If you are one of the 40 million cat guardians pondering the indoor/outdoor dilemma, a catio can be the purrfect solution to enrich your cat’s life and provide peace of mind.

PURA VIDA Tequila

COVER BOYS BILLY & GRINGO PROMOTE THIS TASTY ELIXIR

A

re those not the most penetrating, mesmerizing doggy eyes on our cover dog Gringo? He's sporting some serious baby blues. And guess what's behind those legendary shades of ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons? Some amazing baby blues! In addition to cool peepers, Billy and Gringo share an affinity for Pura Vida Tequila. Now, Gringo is a good boy and doesn't partake in this smooth tasting libation but he does help Uncle Billy, along with dad Stewart Skloss and mom Kaitlyn Skloss, promote one of American's newest tequila labels that is all the rage, Pura Vida Tequila. A glimpse at how this trio + canine mascot, came to be partners in a Mexican spirits company looks like this. Circa 1923, the Vivanco brothers worked the agave fields in the Highlands of Jalisco, Mexico under the watchful eye and loving care of Agaveros. These fields of beautiful blue agave became known far and wide for their exceptional quality, rich flavor, and high sugar content. Sugar is the lifeblood of tequila. It was here in the company of 4th generation Agaveros that the first expression of Pura Vida Tequila would soon be born. Enter Stewart Skloss, head honcho behind the Pura Vida empire. Although he had traveled the world extensively, his love of Texas and

58

www.houstonpettalk.com

Mexico took him back to his younger days with his amigos in Nuevo Laredo where they frequented the famed Cadillac Bar and drank the seductively satisfying Mexican elixir called tequila. One fateful day, while living in Guadalajara, Stewart and his amigos stopped in the town of Tequila for a two hour sampling at one of the local distilleries. What started out as a simple tasting turned into a two-day fiesta, fueling the fire in him to follow his dream of one day making the finest tequila in the world. He spent years traveling all across Mexico in search of the ultimate tequila, or “El Primero Uno.” He learned all about what separates one tequila from another and about how important the purest and cleanest water is to the process of making the finest spirit possible. Armed with the knowledge and experience

of what he wanted to create, he joined forces with the Vivanco’s and together they developed the flavor profile for the first three expressions of Ultra-Premium Pura Vida Tequila. The time had come for Stewart to do exactly what he’d dreamed of for so many years; produce the “Primero Uno” for the world to enjoy. But what would he call his beloved tequila? "Pura Vida" was phrase he often heard in his travels to Centra America, a phrase that means "the good life or pure life"...what could be more fitting? Once back in the States, Stewart met up with longtime friend, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, and tequila aficionado in his own right, Billy F. Gibbons of ZZ Top. Stewart knew Billy shared his dream of “El Primero Uno” Stewart notes, "Billy was our first investor. Initially, when I asked

him to join us he said, 'I turned my back on tequila in my 20’s because it turned its back on my in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico at the Cadillac Bar but if you make one, I will give it a shot, pun intended.' That said, he tried it and responded, 'Is that really tequila, I’ll take 100 bottles for Christmas this year, I have a few compadres that are going to really love this stuff, fantastic!' and off we went on our tequila journey!" Fast forward a few years and the story of Pura Vida continues, as this smooth, award-winning elixir tickles the fancy of discerning palates. And for his part in this success story, Gringo is content to lend his charm and good looks to the label in exchange for a few belly rubs and games of fetch in the office. HIs basic motto is "Gimme All Your Lovin" and I'll let you use my beautiful face to market your tequila. Seems to be working for both Gringo and Pura Vida Tequila!

To donate, adopt or become a much-needed foster home for the pets in our care, please visit www.adorehouston.org.

Each issue, we highlight a local 501(c)3 animal charity in hopes that our readers will find their true love with one of these rescue groups! Charities are chosen from PetTalk GoFetch, our pet directory website and free mobile App, www.pettalkgofetch.com. To be listed as a rescue group, please email info@houstonpettalk.com.

Bagwell Bagwell was found lying in a ditch after being hit by a car. Clinging to life, Bagwell received intensive care and therapy. Although he has a “hitch in his gittyup”, he’s an ACE with his wheelchair! He’s a 4 yr old, 12lb corgidachshund mix who loves other dogs, cats and children. With such a strong spirit, he deserves a home and family who will love and care him!

Jolie

Jolie lived in the woods with her puppy after being abandoned by her owner. Sadly, her puppy became ill and died. Jolie was also sick, suffering from worms, mange, flea anemia and abrasions. Now Jolie is a healthy, happy 4yr old, 60lb English Bulldog Mix who loves other dogs her size or larger and kids. She will make you smile!

Griff&Opal

Griff and Opal lost their home and family during Hurricane Harvey. Their mom was forced to surrender them even though it broke her heart. Griff (10 yrs) and Opal (11.5 yrs) are Petit Basset Griffon Vendeens. They are an incredibly bonded pair who must be adopted together. Both are gentle and loving dogs who can’t wait to spend their golden years with their new forever family.

HOUSTON ZOO: PROTECTING ANIMALS NEAR AND FAR

T

By Lauren St. Pierre

he Houston Zoo’s mission is to connect communities with animals, inspiring action to save wildlife. Every day, the employees of the Houston Zoo are striving to make a difference for animals in the wild and inspir-

ing our guests to take simple actions to save wildlife. Every time you visit the zoo, a portion of your admissions goes straight to saving animals in the wild. Here is a look at how the Houston Zoo and our guests have saved animals in the wild this year:

Monarch Butterflies

Houston Toads

Zoo staff have fitted 70 butterflies with identification tags to track and provide protection plans for monarch butterflies.

Zoo staff have raised and released more than 900,000 Houston toad eggs into the wild. Like the Attwater’s prairie chicken, this program is saving this rare Texas toad from extinction.

Sea Turtles

Attwater's Prairie Chickens

Zoo staff provided medical support for over 80 stranded of injured wild sea turtles from the upper Texas coast.

Zoo staff have raised and released 61 Attwater’s prairie chickens back into the wild, including 49 chicks! This effort is saving a rare Texas bird from extinction.

In 2017, we also saved the counterparts of the animals here at the Zoo around the world.

Tapirs

The zoo protected wild tapirs by supporting a Brazilian veterinarian to provide medical support for tapirs facing challenges in the wild. Visit Antonio, the baby Baird’s tapir, born at the zoo earlier this year.

Sea Lions

Giant Anteaters

The zoo provided eight giant anteaters with tracking/protection device harnesses, which allows researchers to monitor their actions, plus they have reflective tape on them to protect the anteaters from getting hit by cars. You can visit Rio, the baby giant anteater born earlier this year, at the zoo!

Marine wildlife, like sea lions, have a safer ocean environment thanks to zoo staff collecting more than 200 pounds of fishing line and more than 1,800 pounds of trash from water ways. Come and visit sea lion pup Max, born at the Zoo this summer.

Elephants

The Zoo has supported efforts that have doubled Bornean elephant populations in the wild in the past 10 years. In July, the zoo joyously welcomed baby elephant Joy, who you can see during your next visit to the zoo!

Cheetahs

Wild cheetahs were saved with the Zoo’s support for local people in Africa arresting poachers and removing wire traps from areas where cheetahs live in the wild. Come and visit the two cheetah cubs, Dash and Dinari who joined the Houston Zoo family this year. Houston PetTalk Magazine
