e live in a world that encompasses both GOOD and EVIL. There are souls that are devoid of empathy, feel no remorse and have no guilt for the cruelty they enact. Yet, thankfully, there are souls that feel and share love, work to make the world a better place and give of themselves to those in need. This story is about GOOD prevailing over EVIL. This is the story of FREEDOM. On May 16, 2016, Houston Humane Society stepped in to save 5 starving, neglected, disease ridden animals from a property in Northeast Houston, including a puppy with mange, two pregnant pigs and two very starved horses. One of

As Renee details, I called her one day out of the blue with this zany request to help me save this stallion. We visited him once and I declared at that moment that if she would take him in at her home with her other horses, I would do what needed to be done for him. He began cantering on the lunge line in a frantic pace and all I could do was bring him down to a stop and get the heck out of there. I nearly ran to my car and I drove home in shame that I didn’t know how to handle the situation. In the horse world, whoever moves their feet first loses. You are the weak one. I lost that day but I gained knowledge that I could take forward with me about how running

Working on “The Ride”

Working Freedom on a lunge line was as much a learning experience for me as for him.

Over the months, Renee continued to work with Freedom toward the goal of breaking him to ride. She had made incredible strides with getting him to accept a saddle but no rider yet when one day she called to say Freedom needed to find a new home, and somewhat quickly. Before I met Renee, she had planned a breeding for a foal she would keep. A few months prior, she had brought the pregnant mare to live on her property through the birth, weaning, etc. The mare Jack’s first ride on Freedom.

was close to giving birth and she had an extreme dislike of Freedom. She was not comfortable with him being around and for her safety and the new foal, it made sense not to have a rescue horse on the property whose reaction to a new baby would be unknown. It was not news I wanted to hear because I knew Freedom and Renee were good together and he was happy, but I also understood the reasons and was deeply appreciative of all she had given. This move would be the first of several moves for what we began calling “Project Freedom”. From Renee’s house, Freedom was moved to a property that had 50 lush acres and several horses. The owner was very kind to allow us to move him there temporarily while we searched for a longer term solution. Freedom didn’t take the move particularly well. Who knows why, but Renee I suspect he thought we had abandoned him just when he finally

integrated into the herd and Renee and I visited and worked with him. Her comment on that day was really all I needed to hear. “Michelle, I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to see Freedom so relaxed and healthy. He’s a happy boy.” And I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to have embarked on what some called a preposterous journey - a girl who is afraid of horses adopts an abused stallion and who is looking at years of boarding and expense. Yes, that is one lucky girl!

The Journey Ahead The mystery of my decision may always remain. It was one of the most spontaneous, outlandish things I’ve ever done but for reasons only my God may know, I felt a calling and I listened. For once, I listened. And Freedom hasn’t disappointed. He’s been a teacher for Renee and I both and for our part, we gave him the chance he needed to become his very best self. That’s really what we all want and need - a chance to be our very best selves. Maybe Freedom and I are old souls together and have known each other through the ages. Maybe there is no such thing. Not having all the answers is what makes life so intriguing. I for one actually believe there is an eternal connection between us, otherwise I find my actions inexplicable. But whatever we have been and will be together, I’m enjoying the ride!

We were back roughly a day when Michelle reached out about going to meet the rescue. She had sat with the idea for two weeks, and nothing changed. This would be the first time I was wrong on the journey. On August 2, we headed to Houston Humane Society and Michelle filled in the background on the animals seized from this particular property. At this point, my expectation was still for the reality of what she was proposing to set in, and for her to change her mind about the adoption of the young stallion. This would be the second time I was wrong. We arrived at Houston Humane Society,

which was my first visit to the facility and I was duly impressed (I encourage you to visit and see for yourself). One of the caretakers responsible for the stallion’s care met us and took us back to see him. My first impression was a horse not only starved for food, but also starved for affection. It was clear he LIKED people. I asked for a halter and played with him for a few minutes to see if I could get some insight into what he knew and his willingness. I really, really liked him and told Michelle as much. But, I also cautioned her, once he is getting good food and gets weight on him, we could be looking at a completely different horse. The horse was incredibly underweight, as neglected horses typically are, and without good nutrition over the years, we didn’t know what other problems he might have. When a horse has been neglected, you must handle them as you would any animal that has been starved, slowly bringing food into the diet. On the drive back in the car, we discussed further the practicality of the adoption and how I could support Michelle in the process should she decide to move forward. She never wavered from her decision

It has been a dream come true for me to be immersed in the world of horse culture and share this equine obsession with other horse lovers. So what is it that draws us to these four legged miracles of fight or flight? I believe the answer is relationship. Horses are no longer a necessity in the age of technology. Their days at the

body language and energy, so we have to learn a new language to share with them and become acutely aware of the influence our energy and body language has on them. The human-equine bond is made up of boundaries that must be respected on both sides and unspoken messages that must be deciphered by learning to read each others intent. A horses size; and power is the distinct difference between a cat or dog, which influences this profound relationship. Asking a 1,000 pound flight animal if you can sit on their back or direct them from the ground is one of the boldest and bravest things a person can learn to do. The nature of this unique interaction builds character, develops leadership and fosters connection. In these three actions we find the amazing gifts the horse has to give us. A horse is a non judgmental, silent partner who can reflect back to us our strengths and weakness in how we relate to others. We began to notice that when Jack was giving horse-

manship clinics his students experienced profound personal change. In my own life this has been true in regard to overcoming fear and building self esteem. I was given a beautiful black mare 8 years ago but I was afraid to ride her outside of the arena and this frustrated me because I wanted to be outside enjoying the trails. I had to look deep within and find a way to overcome my fear that would work for me. I succeeded by allowing myself to start out with small steps such as riding her from one tree to the next until I slowly built the trust that now gives me the confidence to ride her outside for hours at a time. My horse has helped me learn that I can come up with my own way of dealing with fear which empowers me now in other areas of my life. When I am challenged I use the same method of breaking things into small steps to reach my goal. Horses have an innate ability to reflect back to us the changes we need to make in our lives. An old companion gives us a new perspective and way of looking at ourselves. The horses role in the 21st century will be to help humanity improve relationships.

a problem (Leo LOVES to eat!). She was worried that he might have eaten something that upset his stomach, or possibly gotten into the trash again and ingested a leftover bone from Thanksgiving. As Leo started to pant, however, his owner realized that one of his front canine teeth was broken off – he had fractured his tooth! Animals can fracture teeth in many ways - from chewing on hard bones or toys to rough play or trauma such as running into something or being hit by a car. When an animal fractures a tooth, many times the tooth’s blood supply and nerve, called the pulp, is exposed. Pulp exposure is painful, and can cause infection or

ove and Rescue is a 5013c organization ran by a team of fellow animal lovers on a strictly volunteer basis

so that all resources received are allocated 100% to the animals in need. Of the many purposes that Love and Rescue has, its chief objective is to educate the public on animal welfare and responsible pet ownership. Through the generosity of donors and volunteers, this budding organization has been able to help hundreds of animals get off the streets, receive medical attention, and ultimately get adopted into loving, permanent homes. To learn more, contact Love and Rescue at: loveandrescue.com or email: admin@loveandrescue.com.
