Editorial
I
t's no secret to those that love animals that one of the reasons we feel compelled to help them is because they can't help themselves. With forlorn eyes and a disposition of unconditional love, we inherently understand that we need to protect them, be their voice, be their stewards. It's in the spirit of helping animal causes that many of Houston's media devote their time and resources to supporting the Bayou City's vibrant animal rescue scene. From television to print to radio and digital formats, Houston media offer their time and celebrity, for FREE, to apprise the public of pets in need, lost animals, cruelty cases, pets looking for forever homes and more. Whether it's a DJ promoting a charity event or a TV Reporter working a pet adoption telethon, we have many media to thank for their generosity. It's that spirit of giving that prompted PetTalk to start the annual Media Hounds issue 7 years ago and it's now one our reader's favorite issues of the year! In this issue, we feature Deborah Duncan of KHOU's Great Day Houston, along with
Issue 03: Volume 18 www.houstonpettalk.com
other talented media, as we showcase their pets and share a little peek into their private lives with their furry family members or, in the case of two of our "hounds" who don't currently have pets, we are showcasing adoptable animals from the local rescue group HOPE. The April issue is not only an annual event for our feature, but we also have two other happenings that we LOVE promoting each April. First, is our annual Pets in the Wildflower contest that begins April 1 and concludes April 30, sponsored by BINGLE VET. Be sure to snap a pic of your pet in the beautiful Texas wildflowers and enter the contest (see details on page 17). All entries are published in the June issue! Second is PetTalk's 9th Annual Doggy Party on the Plaza, April 9 at CityCentre (see ad page 27). Enjoy shopping with vendors, entertainment, demonstrations and the one-of-a-kind Rescue Parade featuring 12 area rescue groups competing for prizes. It's a great family event, so bring your pup and the kids and join us as we celebrate all things DOG! I don't know what it is about April, but it
2017 Wildflower Contest Entry, “Mango & Buffet”
has become the event month of the year! Check out the calendar for more pet happenings AND, because there are so many events that we couldn't publish them all, find more opportunities for fun by visiting our online calendar, pettalkgofetch.com for events, business listings and more. In addition to events, we have lots more for you in this issue including shopping (check out the pillow featuring my cute pup Jeda on page 42), adoptable animals, informative articles on equine assisted learning, dangers in the yard, pet allergies and much more. Enjoy!
Media + Hound Local funny girl and talented media personality Deborah Duncan of KHOU's Great Day Houston has a little fun with her rescue pup, Bandit, during our Media Hounds photoshoot. Bandit was a bit "overwhelmed" by the camera, lights and action of the celebrity world and figures she'll be happy to stay home with a tasty bone while Deborah glitters in the spotlight! I
love to get pawdicures. From picking out some outrageous color, to the hot tub soaking of my quadpaws, to those blue scrubbing bubbles and the hot stone massage, and on to the finale - the painting of my 20 digits, I love it all! I'm sure there are lots of great nail shops but mine is divine...it's relaxing and I love the Vietnamese "atmosphere". The workers are so calm and even though it seems they are muttering slightly above one decibel, the gal across the room responds. Canine hearing is exceptional but in the two-legger world, Vietnamese could give us a run for our money. Of course I also love Vietnamese food (which goes without saying) - Vermicelli Bun, Bánh khúc, Bún Thit Nng and Pho. But I digress. I'm here to talk about our government's financial debacle, not my love for the Vietnamese. While relaxing in the midst of my nirvana nail experience, some nitwit asked for the news to be turned on. Off went the relaxing Vietnamese chanting music and on came CNN's Wolf Blitzer. It was like being yanked out of a dream that you're lying in bed with Matthew McConaughey, all to find you are being prepared for a colonoscopy. Ok, fine. What's a dog to do but the same thing we always do - make a little noise of objection but in the end, settle down and try to ignore our surroundings. So as Wolf droned on, I fought to
12
www.houstonpettalk.com
get back to my state of bliss from Blitzer. Just as I started to daydream of a chocolate infused meaty bone, I heard Wolf talking about proposed budget cuts by Congress and there was CONTEMPLATION of a government shutdown if agreement wasn't reached. Not sure why this caught my ear but probably because I thought I heard him say
CASTRATION and I immediately thought of cousin Henri. Anyway, during Wolf's lengthy diatribe of how this budget crisis would cause untold destruction of civilization as we know it, I became increasingly alarmed at how this phenomenon would affect me. It should be embarrassing that I was only thinking of myself in this serious time of national belt tightening, but I moved on from that thought. It all started when Wolf said one of the first things affected by cutting costs might be National Security and Border Control. Although Border Control in our country is an oxymoron, (I actually think Border Collies could do the
job), my mental alarm bells started ringing. If the budget for our military to protect us is cut, then any rogue nation could penetrate our borders. That includes the Chinese and we all know what they like to eat. Worse yet, Kim Jong-un and Dennis Rodman could take over the airwaves and create their own reality show called "Bad Boys Rain". Of course neither one of them will be savvy enough to catch the typo in their show title. In addition to our military deficiency allowing a foreign invasion, budget cuts could also bring about cuts that are closer to "my heart"...disruption of the food supply and food safety. Without the ever watchful eye of the FDA, we could have more in common with Europe than we ever wanted. Our allbeef hot dogs could become all-equine hot dogs, giving a whole new meaning to "dog and pony show". Adding further Bite to this debacle is the chance that other countries will view our inability to curb spending as a sign they should not sell us more stuff we can't pay for. I'm not sure I can withstand a shortage
of Grey Goose Canadian Vodka, French Champagne or Worcestershire Sauce. Whether or not our country actually goes to hell in a hand basket remains to be seen but all the doom and gloom discussions sure have made for interesting chatter at the Salty Dog. I'll share a few comments with you... According to Lonnie (he's a Lab who had his tail docked and has STS - Short Tail Syndrome), he is worried that there will be a teacher layoff thus reducing the quality of education in the classroom and therefore people will be stupider. Yes, he used the word stupider leading me to ask if there had been a layoff when he attended school. Next was Rocky the Rottweiler who firmly believes that cuts in government spending means all Forest Rangers will die of starvation and there will be an invasion of Grizzly Bears. I think Rocky had a few too many knocks in the head at the boxing gym. As for me, I think the answer to this dilemma lies in secession. Texas should just secede from the Union. It's obvious we have everything a country would need: Everyone in the world knows where it is, the odds of meeting an astronaut are high, we don't need to conceal handguns - we'd rather you know we can shoot you, we invented Dr. Pepper, we have Tex-Mex, ZZ Top and Schlitterbahn. And the best reason is what we don't have.. State Income Tax - duh!

ongratulations to AniMeals, a program of Interfaith Ministries (IM) for Greater Houston that feeds the pets of Meals on Wheels’ homebound seniors, for raising over $100,000 at this year's Best Friends Brunch! Susan Boggio, a long-time AniMeals supporter and a champion of animal welfare causes, was this year’s honoree. More than 200 attended the event, which was chaired by Brigitte Kalai and Sippi Khurana. After a vegetarian brunch, a pet fashion show ensued as television personality Casey Curry humorously personified the bios of the furry models. All 18 animals, including one super chill feline, were dressed to the nines! AniMeals provides 10,000 lbs. of pet food monthly to more than 1,200 dogs and cats, and new programs transport seniors’ pets to the vet for routine care and medical procedures. Fun was had by all 84 humans and 70 greyhounds in attendance. One highlight of the day was Speed Alley - a special “track for the retired racers to showcase their stuff and prove to the world they still can run. The winner, Ollie, was clocked at 38 mph! Other fun activities were the crowning of the King and Queen (oldest male and female dog present), Shiney Hiney contest and the tallest and shortest hound, among others. Internet sensation, Dory also made an appearance, and four littermates held a family reunion. Learn more about greyhounds as pets and Greyhound Pets of America-Houston at www.gpahouston.org.

DLS provides a safe and loving environment for dogs that are considered “unadoptable” because of advanced age, chronic illness, or physical disabilities, ensuring they will no longer live on the streets, experience abuse and neglect, or be euthanized. Please visit doglodge.org for more details.

DEBORAH DUNCAN KHOU's Great Day Houston With "Bandit"
M
eet Deborah Duncan, one Houston's most talented, giving and funny personalities. She is the Host of KHOU's Great Day Houston airing weekdays at 9am. Deborah is a great supporter of the Houston animal scene, often volunteering her time to emcee events (including PetTalk's Doggy Party on the Plaza) and highlighting various rescues and shelters on her show. Thanks Deborah for your dedication to Houston's pets!
Tell us about Bandit. Bandit was found wondering around a business office and my husband brought her home. She was definitely affected by being a street dog. She’s afraid of everything (as you can see in her photo, she is also camera shy!).
What other animals do you have? Tina the bearded dragon that belongs to my son (who has always been obsessed with lizards), Violet the cat, plus Chester the terrier we got from CAP.
Have you always been around animals? I had cats and dogs; my grandmother had pigs which I thought of as my pets until one year they were in the freezer so that changed everything.
If Bandit could ask you a question, what do you think it would be? Can you please let the lizard out to play just once please?
If Bandit could ask you to go somewhere, where would it be? To the meat counter
What animal charities do you support? I emcee events for CAP including their annual gala; We provide a voice for many rescue organizations on the Great Day Houston show as well as featuring animals from Houston SPCA and Houston Humane Society.
If you could be any animal, what would you choose? Black Panther - it’s my new super hero right now!
Tell us a secret about yourself that our readers would be surprised to learn. My weight loss program is only two 10 lb. weights and I only sleep 4-5 hours per night. Houston PetTalk Magazine
29
ERICA RICO
Host of The Q Morning Zoo on The New 93Q WIth "Black Dog"
What type of dog is Black Dog? Black Dog is a total country dog! She loves running on our land and will only come in the house when it’s too cold or hot outside. Since Houston weather is so amazing, she is like me and loves to run free outside. It is the most beautiful thing to see her run and play with the kids.
What is your favorite animal and why? My favorite animal is the Tiger. I love how beautiful and regal they move around like they own the place. So beautiful yet so tough.
If Black Dog was a super hero, who would she be and why? She would be Wonder Woman. She is
30
www.houstonpettalk.com
so smart and can figure anything out.
What is one of the worst things Black Dog has ever done?
What is the number one thing you would want to tell the public about responsible pet care?
My dog is super smart and once she wanted to play with my son and she opened the door herself and let them both out to play. Good thing I was right there to stop them. We now make sure to have that door locked at all times.
I would say if you wouldn’t like it, your pet probably wouldn’t either. I think that especially with the extreme weather Houston has been having, if you don’t want to be outside neither should they.
If you could be any animal in the world, what would you be? If I could be any animal in the world I’d be an extinct bird. I would be able to fly anywhere I wanted, no one could harm me because of how high I could get, therefore I would be protected and I could see everything.
Tell us a secret about you that our readers would love to know? I play the violin and every time I play it, my dog lays down and goes to sleep. Not sure if it's soothing to her or she’s trying to get out of listening to me.
Tell us about your beautiful pups. They are both Australian Shepherds. My wife, Erica and I got them in Oklahoma. Bloopy is the red merle Aussie and Jareth is the blue merle Aussie.
What would Bloopy & Jareth choose as their favorite place to go? They'd for sure want to go to a snowy meadow in the countryside somewhere to herd sheep. They want to work. It's bred into them. They end up herding each other and herding us, in the reality of suburban dog life.
If Bloopy & Jareth could ask you a question, what do you think it would be? Can we go for a walk now? When can we walk? I want to walk. Let's walk now? So, walk now or later? Now, please. Let's walk?
What super hero roles would Bloopy & Jareth be best at portraying?
have a signature greeting that's warm in its own way.
Batman and Robin for sure. They're great together as Jareth takes the alpha role planning things and Bloopy backs him as a sidekick with power, speed and stamina.
Is there a special animal organization that you would love our readers to help, become a part of, or learn more about?
Give us a peak into their secret, private life of sleep and play. The dogs have their own beds in the den, but usually they find one of the couches to curl up on. They are super, super crazy about Frosty Paws frozen dog treats. It's without exaggeration, a religious experience for them to get one of these once in a while! They also love their Kong toys and frisbees. When we come home, Bloopy always brings a present (like one of his toys or a bone) to offer me, and Jareth curls up like shrimp, wiggling and barking. They both

SNAP is such a great organization. (www.snapus.org/spay-neuter). I believe the only way to solve Houston's homeless dog problem is to legislate a mandatory dog and cat sterilization policy. Violators would be fined and proceeds would go toward SNAP efforts for free spay and neuter.
How did you and Max meet?
Do you have any favorite animals?
His elderly owner took him for a walk in Hermann Park, dropped his leash and walked away. Four teenagers chased her down, but she tearfully said that she couldn’t afford to take care of both of them. As the teens waited for park police, a kind couple from Canada (who happened to be staying on my street during their vacation) offered to take the pup in temporarily. A friend of mine posted the story on Facebook, and that’s where I saw Max!
Oh lord, I grew up obsessed with penguins, ducks, Siberian tigers, raccoons… who knows why. I used to “rescue” frogs and snails and all sorts of things. My mother always made me release them, of course. Heck, there’s a possum that runs along our Upper Kirby fence at 1am (I’m a night owl). I’ve named him Chevrolet after those Ramona B. Quimby books.
What attracts you to animals?
Why do you leave me everyday?!
As a reporter, I spend much of my day sharing other peoples’ stories and experiences. Animals can’t speak, so it’s our job to stand up for them.
Where does Max sleep and what are his favorite toys?

Definitely Whole Foods. He gets very excited when I bring grocery bags home.

handbag placement whether I’m coming or going.
CESAR PROCEL Raul Brindis Show (102.9FM) WIth "Kirah"
Tell us about Kirah and how you came to be buddies? Kirah is an Akita that my brother bought from a pet store and kept her for about 2 years. He had to move and was going to let his friend watch her temporarily. I told him I’d be glad to take her as my own and she’s been with me ever since. She just turned 11 years old on February 27, 2018.
Tell us about your background with animals. Growing up in Mexico, I lived in the country-side so at a very young age I learned the value an animal can bring to your life, whether it be a pet or livestock. I’ve owned or cared for cats, dogs, sheep, goats, horses, cattle, lizards, and reptiles in general throughout my whole life. When Kirah first came into my life
she had NO personality, she was afraid of random objects so I slowly started socializing her with other animals and humans. I never would have expected her to be such a great dog to my kids but they absolutely love her.
Do you have a favorite animal? I’ve always loved Boxers, but after having Kirah in my life for almost a decade, I’ve learned to appreciate Akitas. I was very surprised to learn she was considered an “aggressive breed” since she’s always had a gentle demeanor.
If Kirah could ask you a question, what do you think it would be? Why can’t I play “tag” with the ducks in the neighborhood pond?
If Kirah was a super hero, who would she be? I’m not sure… which superhero sleeps 18 hours a day, doesn’t make a noise and lays around like a rug?
What does your show do to support animals in Houston? On the show we try to do topics related to pets whenever possible. We usually have someone from Houston Humane Society on hand to talk about the importance of adoption.
Tell us a secret about yourself that would surprise our readers. When I was a kid I would make it a point to ride untamed horses and would get in trouble for it. I just thought I had animalwhisperer powers. I didn’t.

Do you consider yourself as an animal enthusiast? I am definitely an animal lover! Growing up, my family always had pets - whether it was dogs or birds - and even hamsters and turtles! However, dogs have always been a huge part of my life. There is a lot of truth in the famous saying, "A dog is a man's best friend." Dogs have a way of warming your heart and bringing joy to your life.
Did you have a favorite pet growing up? My favorite memory is from a few years ago with my dogs Pancho and Bella (both miniature schnauzers). There was nothing better than coming home from a long day at work and opening the door to see their faces and their tails wagging with excitement when they saw me; I will always remember their pure and genuine love.
Do you support any local pet organizations?
Erica Work Pets Name
I am a true believer in helping animals find a forever home and this is why I enjoy helping nonprofit organizations like HOPE. Rosie is such a sweet girl. I can't believe she has been in rescue for years. She deserves a loving forever home and I hope someone sees her in this issue and scoops her up!
If you could be any animal in the world which one would you be and why? A huge Galapagos Turtle... they live in paradise and live for over 100 years.

SPECIAL "K" KEVIN KRBE, 5:30AM - 10am & Weekends WIth "Sammy Jo & Rocco"
Tell our readers about your cute little duo and how they “found you” . Sammy Jo, the white rescue, was found by the SPCA on their door step in a milk crate. Rocco, the black Chinese Crested, was the only powder puff from the litter. All his siblings are BALD!
What’s the worst thing that Sammy Jo or Rocco have ever done? I was running along the Bayou with Sammy one day on the concrete section near downtown. Sammy was tearing through the shallows and didn’t realize it dropped off. Luckily she was on a leash because when she went under, I had to literally reel her in as the current was taking her under. A scary experience but she knows now to avoid the Bayou!
What is the number one thing you would want to tell the public about responsible pet care? If you cannot properly care for an animal and give them the attention they require, do not try to take on another life. It pains me to see animals chained up in the back yard, particularly in the extreme temperatures. If I could scoop them all up and put them on a farm, I would!
If Sammy Jo and Rocco had a human voice, who would they sound like? Sammy is loud and sassy, so I’m thinking she would sound like Tiffany Haddish. Rocco would sound like Ralph Wiggum from the Simpsons. I’ve heard him try to speak!
Is there a special animal organization that you would love our readers to help, become a part of, or learn more about? Special Pals Animal Shelter in Katy (3830 Greenhouse Rd, 77084).

Tell us about your pet menagerie, because we hear Blue is not your only furry family member. I have four dogs -two German Shepherd, one Belgian Malinois and my small poodle, Blue. One of my German Shepherd is a retired K-9, but Blue runs the household. Blue was a Christmas present for my daughter but he loves me more LOL!
What do you think makes you such an animal enthusiast? As a child I was never allowed to have a dog, so when I was old enough to have a pet, I did. The first dog I ever got was from a friend of mine who’s dog was pregnant so I told her I wanted to keep 2, and she let me keep them. My mom almost had a heart attack, but they were mine and I was able to provide for them and take good care of them.
If there is one question Blue would ask you, what do you think it would be? Why can’t I eat more steak and potatoes?
Do you work with any particular pet charities? ASPCA, Lance McCullers Jr. Foundation, Houston Pets Alive, Camo; there are a lot of great animal organizations in Houston helping animals.
Where does Blue like to sleep? In bed with us, of course!
If you could be any animal in the world what would you be and why? I would be a bird to travel all over the world.
If Blue had a human voice who do you think he would sound like? Definitely Charlie Puth!

WIth "Venus" An adoptable rescue from Homeless & Orphaned Pets Endeavor (HOPE). Learn about adopting Venus at homelesspets.net.
Why are you such an animal enthusiast? I absolutely love animals. So much so that ironically I don’t own a pet. I know the attention and care that I would want to give and that's required and at this time I just wouldn't be able to give quality attention. Now that’s love for animals, to resist such cuteness!
What is your favorite pet? Between dogs and cats, I’m definitely a dog person. I like smart dogs, ones that like to protect and be with you and of course the breeds that shed the least. Growing up I had all kinds of dogs and many times the mutts were the sweetest! I never thought much about fish, but one day ended up owning a Siamese fighting fish. Named it Zula and swear it had a personality and enjoyed when I was around. Sounds crazy huh?
What is the number one thing you would want to tell the public about responsible pet care? Avoid abuse. Learn proper training forms for obedience. Never chain them to confined spaces, abandon them in cold conditions or use them for fighting.
If you could be any animal in the world which one would you be and why? Butterfly. They flutter around with grace and seem to live in peace. And no matter their pattern (wings), all seem to have beauty.
Tell us a secret about yourself that our readers would be surprised to learn. I once got left at sea, off the coast of Thailand.
Is there a special animal organization that you would love our readers to help or learn more about? I support Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP) and after today, I was really impressed meeting the people and pets of HOPE. I would encourage anyone that is looking for a fun, happy pup to consider adopting Venus! Houston PetTalk Magazine

Health SUMMER Hazards Protect Your Cats and Dogs
T
here are many potential problems for pets during the summer months, so it’s important as a pet owner to understand the dangers that certain flowers, plants and other substances can be to a pet’s health. Pet problems occur primarily because pets use their sense of smell and taste to investigate. When they come across a new or interesting item, their first reaction is to smell it. This often leads to tasting

damage to the stomach lining, severe liver failure and in some cases, death. Steer clear at all costs.
LILY OF THE VALLEY The Convallaria majalis plant can cause vomiting, diarrhea, a drop in heart rate, severe cardiac arrhythmias, and possibly seizures. This plant contains cardiac glycosides, which are used in many human heart medications. Pets with exposure should be examined and evaluated by a veterinarian and treated symptomatically.
LILIES
it. With these dangers in mind, here is a short list of things you should be aware of that could be avoidable dangers and you won’t need to make a summer emergency trip to the pet hospital.
SAGO PALM This plant is considered one of the most deadly for dogs and long-term survival is poor if ingested. It includes all parts of the plant and ingesting just a small amount can cause severe vomiting, bloody stools,
44
www.houstonpettalk.com
Cat owners should be aware that ingesting small amounts, even from grooming the pollen off their fur, can cause major problems. Peace, Peruvian and Calla lilies may cause minor symptoms, but other, more deadly species (Tiger, Asiatic, Easter, Japanese Show and Day lilies), are extremely toxic. If they consume any part of these lilies, or even drink the water from the vase, they will need immediate care.
SOIL ADDITIVES, PESTICIDES AND INSECTICIDES While most fertilizers are fairly safe for pets, those that contain blood meal, bone
meal, feather meal and iron can be very dangerous to pets. Large ingestions of the meal-containing products can form a concretion in the stomach, potentially obstructing the gastrointestinal tract and causing severe pancreatitis. Most pesticides or insecticides (typically those that come in a spray can) are irritants to pets but not a huge concern, however, some may contain an organophosphate which can be life threatening when consumed in large quantities. It is always best to speak to a trained medical professional if you use these products and have questions.
SLUG AND SNAIL BAITS These baits come in a variety of forms (pellets, granular, powder, and liquid). The active ingredient is typically metaldehyde, and is toxic to all pets. Walking on the toxin then licking their paws is a common form of ingestion for pets. Within 1 to 2 hours of ingestion, clinical signs of salivation, restlessness, vomiting, and incoordination are seen, they progress to tremors, seizures, and secondary severe hyperthermia. Treatment should be quick and aggressively implemented.
COMPOST Gardeners love compost, however, it’s toxic to pets so keep it fenced off. As matter decomposes, molds grow, producing hazardous tremorgenic mycotoxins. Being consumed can result in sickness in as little as 30 minutes. Symptoms include agitation, panting, drooling, vomiting, tremors and seizures. Prompt veterinary treatment is required. If your pet may have ingested something harmful, take action immediately. Contact VERGI Emergency & Critical Care Hospital by visiting www.vergi247.com.

SNEEZING & Wheezing Allergies in Cats and Dogs
I
’m just going to say it, because we all know it’s true. If you live in Texas during the spring and summer…and fall…and winter (really all the time), you know that it’s an incontrovertible fact that Texas is one of the absolute worst states for allergies, and Houston might be Texas’ honorary allergy capital. Year after year we sneeze, cough, get sinus infections, have headaches, get rashes and deal with itchy, watery eyes. And although you may not know it, your dog or cat can (and often do) have just about all the same types of allergies that we have as people. That’s right! Dust, pollen, grass (grass!!), grains, fleas, chicken…you name it! And just like in people, these allergies can make your dog or cat’s life difficult–and itchy. Dogs and cats generally manifest allergies differently than people. We sneeze, cough, and get watery eyes, while they tend to itch, scratch and lick or chew at their skin and paws, though some can also show respiratory symptoms. Many pet owners, especially those with breeds
46
www.houstonpettalk.com
such as Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, etc., are probably familiar with “hot spots”. Hot spots areas of excessive redness, irritation and bacteria that seem to form literally overnight and can go from the size of a quarter to the size of a grapefruit in hours. The affected animal will lick and chew at their skin until it bleeds–not fun for them or for you. These types of spots, as well as symptoms such as hair loss, pustules, scabs, and areas of redness and/or irritation on the skin are all signs that your pet might have allergies. Many pets with allergies will focus on certain areas (such as their paws) when licking and chewing, so if your Cocker Spaniel is constantly licking his paws, or you see that your Westie has brown staining between his toes, you might want to talk to your family veterinarian about the possibility that your pet has allergies. Pets with allergies will often develop secondary bacterial or fungal infections on their skin or in their ears. In fact, chronic ear infections can be an indicator
By: Kate Lawrence and Dr. Sandra Merchant, DACVD, www.gcvs.com
that the patient is also suffering from chronic allergies. These skin and ear infections are often itchy, painful and very smelly, and generally require medical intervention through your family veterinarian or a veterinary dermatologist. Allergy treatment with a veterinary dermatologist is frequently very similar to treatments you might get through a human allergy specialist including allergy testing, allergy shots, oral and topical medication, etc. Some treatments (like the video otoscope that can give a clear picture deep in the ear canal for serious or chronic ear infections) are utilized often by veterinary dermatologists. Many pets with allergies can be well-managed with oral medication or as-needed topical treatment. However, for more severe or chronic allergies, ear infections, or skin conditions, scheduling a consultation with a veterinary dermatologist to assess the cause and treatment for your pet’s allergies may benefit both you and your pet. Especially here in Texas!

Tail End AWESOME Opossum
What You Might Not Know About This Critter
I
t's my opinion that the opossum is totally awesome! Now some of you will disagree with me but let me tell you about the opossum and then see if you change your mind. The first thing you should know is that the opossum is a hero in the fight against ticks. According to the National Wildlife Federation, an opossum can eat up to 4,000 ticks in one week helping to slow down the spread of Lyme disease. In addition to ticks, they eat cockroaches, rats, mice, snails and slugs—actually, they eat almost anything, keeping our environment free of all the nasty things we don’t like. Snakes? Yep. Opossums are immune to the venom of poisonous snakes. Is rabies a concern of yours? Not to worry. Although any mammal can be a carrier of rabies, the chance of opossums being a carrier are very rare. The body temperature of the opossum is very low making it almost impossible for the virus to survive. Dinosaurs roamed our earth 70 million years ago. Guess who roamed it with them? Opossums. Any animal that can
54
www.houstonpettalk.com
survive for that long deserves my respect. “Playing ‘possum” is a real thing but opossums don’t have any control over it. When frightened, some become paralyzed with fear. They drop, their lips draw back exposing their teeth and their anal glands secrete a bad smelling liquid which deters predators. They will recover in one to four hours. Some scientists believe that “playing ‘possum” evolved as a defense mechanism because opossums move so slowly and can’t outrun predators. The opossum is the only marsupial in North America. Females can give birth to up to 25 babies after a short gestation period of 11 to 13 days. The babies are so small that 20 of them could fit into a teaspoon. The babies make their way to mama’s pouch where only 13 teats are available. Obviously, not all the babies survive for this reason. The lucky ones latch onto the teat and stay attached for up to 3 months. They climb out and cling to their mother’s back for up to 2 weeks when they “fall” off. They are then on their own.
By: Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
The opossum has 50 teeth—more than any other North American land mammal. The hairless tail is used for balance, grasping branches and carrying nesting materials but is not used to hang upside down. This is a common misconception. They also have opposable thumbs on their hind feet used for holding onto branches. Are you now convinced that opossums are totally awesome? Even if you’re not, we encourage you to “live and let live.” They serve a purpose and deserve a place in our world. If you find a dead opossum with babies in the pouch, please don’t remove them. Although difficult, we ask that you place the expired mom in a box and bring her to us. We will carefully remove the babies and care for them until they can be safely released back to the wild. TWRC Wildlife Center can help you with all of your wildlife concerns. Answers to many of your questions can be found on our website at www.twrcwildlifecenter. org. If you can’t find the information you need, please call us at 713-468-TWRC. Services provided by TWRC Wildlife Center include an emergency room for injured, ill, and orphaned wildlife, as well as a help-line; both the emergency room and the help-line operate 7 days a week. TWRC cares for both native and nonnative Texas wildlife found in and around the Houston area, with a specialty in small mammals, migratory songbirds, small raptors and reptiles. Their goal is to rehabilitate with the intent to release back into the wild. Learn more about their services or what to do if you find an animal at twrcwildlifecenter.org.

any people keep caged birds for companionship, a hobby and for some, even a small business. It all started with one bird for most of us and we all did our homework before selecting, buying and bringing home our new winged companion. Birds are not like having a dog or a cat and depending upon your choice of bird, a little investigation and preparedness can make for a smooth transition for both of you. Do Your Homework: You’re taking the first step by reading this article! Determine what type of bird you are interested in. Small finches, canaries, cockatiels or parakeets require little space to own and are ideal for apartment dwellers. They can be relatively low maintenance pets. You can purchase extended seed dispensers & water containers if you travel & they should be fine for an overnight trip. They are relatively quiet animals and few things are more calming than listening to a canary sing on a sunny patio in the morning. Larger birds such as parrots require much more time, space, special diets and should be considered from all possible angles before purchasing one. A parakeet or cockatiel average 5-15 years lifespan whereas a parrot is 25-50 (or more) and that’s quite a commitment! Purchase The Right Size of Cage: Birds have wings for a reason–they like to use them! Take the time and investment
in purchasing a cage where your bird can fly and move about. A standard rule of thumb for two parakeets is a cage measuring 40 x 30 x 20 inches. Pay attention to bar spacing; limiting ½ inch spacing for finches & canaries and you can use wider spacing for a cockatiel or small parrots. If you start with one bird, you may wish to purchase a mate for them in the near future & cramped quarters can lead to aggression and stress. Smaller birds like different swings, ladders; even multiple food dishes. Unlike parrots, they never get exercise outside of their cage, so make sure they have plenty of room to fly
about on the inside. It’s a good idea to have a smaller cage on hand for transport or as a “hospital cage”. If a bird ever needs to be removed from a shared space due to injury or illness, you don’t want to run the risk of infecting other healthy birds. Sources for Further Information on Keeping Birds: Your local bird retail store can be a wealth of information, supplies and support. Join local and national bird clubs where you can meet like-minded individuals. There are even birding shows where you can enter your birds for awards that meet the breed standards. Facebook has several forums that include novice bird owners and experienced bird breeders from all over the world. Whatever your level of enthusiasm is for this newfound companion-- with a little research and preparedness, you and your new bird can enjoy many years together! EQUINE Experiential Learning Can Horses Help You Become A Better You?

C
an horses help us become our best selves? I believe they can as evidenced by an entire discipline of horse and human therapy that has been gaining recognition for the past few decades. You may see this modality of horses and humans engaging for the purpose of the human's enlightenment referred to as Equine Experiential Learning (EEL), Equine Assisted Learning (EAL), Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies
what it is horses partner with me to do? The goal in its simplest form of the alphabet soup listed above, is to help humans discover and become the best version of who they were created to be, or at least that is my goal when I work with individuals or teams. Still feel lost? So did I eight years ago when all of these designations came into my awareness. My first experience with EAAT was with a local therapeutic riding

These are all the possible generic designations, so you can imagine how challenging it can be to concisely describe

center. This came about as a result of looking for activities for my brother-in-law, Bill, who had suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in 1981 and had come to live with us. His life and his body had become such that he needed help from the family.
It was incredible to see what the weekly rides did for him, not only physically, but also emotionally. When he was riding, his “blue moods” were less frequent and less lengthy. When there were breaks in the riding schedule, he physically and emotionally became more challenging. Care giving can play havoc on relationships and my husband and I were no exception. We learned the hard way that if you don’t take care of yourself, then nothing else is going to work. Three years after Bill came to reside with us, we had fallen into our own versions of depression. During our struggles, my friend and mentor told me of an EFP program for men. The ironic thing, as I was looking for something to help my husband, I found a program for me that changed my life. If you've ever heard the saying “you don’t know what you don’t know", that was me. I was so busy taking care of the family (including our critters) that I was completely unaware of how shut down I had become. I was surviving, but barely. In the first 5-day workshop, I didn’t
connect with any of the activities until the 4th day. When we debriefed each activity, the other 7 participants had fabulous insights from their time with the horses and the reflective time we spent on mandala’s (an artistic tool to tap into the right side of our brain). I am thankful for that group of women, because there was nothing but love and support from them as I kept coming up with goose-egg after goose-egg. I’m not sure what triggered in the facilitator, but after we completed a mounted meditation, and I still didn’t have anything but darkness, she asked me if I would be comfortable entering a round-pen with two horses at liberty. I don’t know if it was bravery, stupidity or desperation, but I agreed to put myself in a round-pen with two strange horses, with the intent to move them, while a group of up-until-that-week strangers looked on. The goal: to move the horses at liberty (with no halters or lines connected to them) and get them to go the opposite direction of each other. To many, this may sound like a simple task. But to add to the difficulty, one horse was the leader, the other a dominant, two different roles in a herd of horses. When the time in the exercise came that would require them to cross, the dominant’s natural tendency would be to turn and follow the lead horse. To meet the goal, I HAD to
become the lead horse to both horses. It took quite a bit of coaching from the sideline, but once I got it, and the horses passed each other not once, or twice, but multiple times, a whole new world opened to me in that moment. At the end, the horses started bucking and playing and it felt like they were celebrating the success with me. For the first time in my life I understood empowerment. At the
end of that week, I had also come to the realization that at my core, I still loved my husband and believed our marriage was worth fighting for. The next year, the group of us came back together for Part II. It was at that time I was offered the opportunity to become an Eponaquest Riding Focused instructor. Since that time I have had the privilege of working with teams to help ascertain their strengths and weaknesses, helped a young lady who was continuously getting thrown from her horse in lessons learn how to shift her focus and connect with her horse, and helped individuals recognize they are presenting themselves based on other people's expectations rather than their true selves. The beauty of partnering with horses is they provide this beautiful mirror of how we are showing up in the world. My job as the facilitator is to provide a safe environment and to ask the questions that help individuals or teams discover their truth. Yes, traditional self-help and counseling modalities can get you there, but often take much longer. Why? It is hard to deny the truth a 1000-pound animal shows you.

Freyja FREYJA is a 2-year old,
female, Black Lab mix. She is shy/hesitant at first but will become loving and playful once she gets to know you. She is crate trained but prefers to be with her family when home. Freyja enjoys playing with toys, cuddling and playing in the baby pool.
She is in a foster home with large and small dogs. Freyja has not been around cats and children frighten her. She would do best in a stress-free home with another doggie companion.
ODY is a 9-year ACE is a 5-year old Border MO old, 90 lb, male, American Collie mix who has been in rescue for most of his life and rarely gets any interest because he is a black dog. His only flaw is he is not good with other dogs, but he loves people! Ace enjoys car rides, long walks or runs and would
be an excellent companion for an active person. Ace is housetrained and he's great with kids and loves to cuddle. Ace is best suited for a family with older, considerate children and as an ONLY dog.
Bulldog/Boxer mix. He was rescued from Moody Park in an emaciated state with heartworms and a bad ear crop job. He'sbeen in the rescue for several years and we call him our gentle giant. Moody is good with smaller dogs and loves everyone! He is housetrained and crate trained. Since he is an older very large dog, he gets looked over, but he is a playful! He is now healthy and heartworm negative and needs to find his forever home.
Each issue, we highlight a local 501(c)3 animal charity in hopes that our readers will find their true love with one of these rescue groups! Charities are chosen from PetTalk GoFetch, our pet directory website and free mobile App, www.pettalkgofetch.com. To be listed as a rescue group, please email info@houstonpettalk.com.

and resources. When needs arise, our conservation partners are flown in to Houston to train with Houston Zoo staff members. In February, Houston Zoo Wildlife Warrior Elisa Panjang was stateside at a conference in Florida,
so the zoo brought her to Houston to meet with staff and guests! While in Houston, Elisa met with many staff members from different departments. She assisted in procedures with zoo veterinarians, learned how the Education team teaches our guests about animals and how to protect them in the wild, and learned about fund-raising events for the Development team. The knowledge and experience gained during her visit will be used to help endangered wildlife in Asia. “I was very lucky to explore the zoo and hear stories from each department and learn of their efforts in conserving wildlife,” Elisa says. “I am very proud to work with such a dedicated zoo.” A long-time partner of

the Houston Zoo, Elisa was awarded the Wildlife Warrior Award in 2017. This award is funded through the sale of saving wildlife bracelets sold by the Admissions team throughout the zoo, and recognizes exceptional staff from the Zoo’s long-term wildlife conservation partner programs and provides them with an experience that will increase their abilities and knowledge. The Admissions team was impressed by Elisa’s passion about the wildlife she has grown up with and her commitment to saving the pangolin from extinction. Born and raised in Malaysia, Elisa has dedicated her life to protecting the pangolin, arguably one of the most fascinating looking creatures in the animal kingdom. Often referred to as a spiny anteater, the pangolin is almost completely covered in scales made of keratin, the same material of which our fingernails are made. Unfortunately, these scales are highly valued in some cultures, and as a result, pangolin populations in the wild are declining. Elisa’s organization, Danau Girang Field Centre (DGFC), monitors the pangolin and
several other endangered species in Borneo, including the clouded leopard and
elephant, threatened by poaching and habitat loss. DGFC works to understand how species respond to habitat changes and how scientific data can aid in the conservation of these species. The organization also provides teaching and training programs for local and international students. “I learn a lot and gain valuable information because I’m not only doing my own research, but also have the opportunity
to experience and explore other research projects,” Elisa says. Houstonians can support Elisa and DGFC in their efforts to protect pangolins in Southeast Asia. A portion of every zoo admission ticket and membership goes to conservation efforts around the world. Simply by visiting the Houston Zoo, you help save animals, like pangolins, in the wild!
