HOW me those amazing doggies! It’s summertime fun in Houston with the return of the INDOOR (oh yes!) palooza for dog lovers, otherwise known as the Houston World Series of Dog Shows, where thousands of dogs will strut, jump, race, pose and fly through the air to the delight of the crowd. The show comes to H-Town for the 41st Annual event, July 18-22 at NRG Arena. Many moons ago (1996), I showed my first Briard at this event and although I found showing was not for me, I fell in love with the show itself. I enjoy the energy, the fascinating specimens of canine varieties, the shopping, the athletic ability of the dogs and the educational opportunity to learn about everything from grooming to nutrition. At this year’s event, Agility is not on the menu, however, the show is bringing back AKC's My Dog Can Do That!, inviting all dogs of different breeds and mixes to test their skills in agility style courses. With the help of professional trainers, your dog will run a condensed version of an Agility course, so bring your dog and give it a try.

Issue 06: Volume 18 www.houstonpettalk.com

After a run-through, check out some of the other things to do at the show including the student art exhibit (you’ll be blown away by the talent!), meet the breed interaction, shopping, conformation, flyball, grooming and much more. As always, we invite you to stop by PetTalk's booth, "Henrietta's Doghouse", near the Meet the Breed ring. You can pick up past issues of PetTalk, spin the wheel for prizes, shop for t-shirts or just hang out and chat with us. We love meeting our readers! Check out the feature story to learn more about the show and plan your visit to get the most out of the activities. As a reminder, the exhibitions that are super-popular, like Disc Dogs, Canine Freestyle and the Grooming Competition, are presented only on the weekend. Also in this issue you’ll find a fun product guide with a theme that’s perfect for July Red Hot! From flames to sizzle and bright red colors, shop for your little furry fireball and treat him or her to a new bed or collar. And, while you’re in the mood to spoil your pup, check out our feature on Prestonwood

Kennels where luxury and comfort await canine guests at this 5-star resort. A few other valuable articles you'll want to read include how to avoid ER visits with your pet, straight from the ER doctor at VERGI 24/7. Plus, an important matter for feline owners, what you need to know about urethral obstructions, on page 52. You’ll also find in this issue great photos shared by our readers. A few issues back, we started showing off Instagram pics from our followers and we hear you when you say “keep them coming", so we will continue to share! Be sure to follow us on Instagram or Facebook for both Houston PetTalk and PetTalk GoFetch (our pet business and event directory) for details on contests, photo-sharing opportunities, news, events and more. We look forward to seeing you at the show…it’s an affordable, indoor, multi-faceted way to entertain family and friends or get out and about with your dog. See you there!

It's Showtime!

If you love dogs, there is no better place to see every size, breed, color and skill than at the Houston Dog Show! This indoor, family-friendly event will wow you with the thousands of dogs that are competing in a variety of events. Henrietta On: Country Music, Losing Weight and Dumb Blondes

www.houstonpettalk.com

As I see it, no other genre of music has paid more homage to canines than Country Music and I’m going to return the favor by making it my music of choice and my weight loss muse. Classics like “I Wouldn’t Take Her To A Dog Fight ‘Cause I’m Afraid She’d Win” or “I Was Drinkin’

longer available. I heard the howls of pain all the way down at the Piggly Wiggly. Yeah, I’m movin’ on to Tim McGraw (I’d love to crawl up in that hat of his) or better yet, Blake Shelton makes my tail wag so hard my butt wiggles. I thought he was hot but when I heard Hillbilly Bone, I knew any man that sang about bones was the one for me. It might be far-fetched but if he’d write a song for me, it might go something like this: Went down to Houston where I’d never been before I ain’t seen such pretty girls with as many legs as four There’s really a special one that’s just right for me She loves a good steak and a sniff of a tree Our future together would be filled with lots a’ fun She’d bring me the paper and I’d rub her belly in the sun As she drinks from the toilet, I’d have a bottle of beer She’d lick my nose and I’d scratch her behind the ear

Out Of The Toilet When Life Gave Me The Flush” are must haves on my playlist. And, there’s one more reason to hitch my leash to Country Music. The men are FINE! I’ve posted notice at the local watering hole that I’m no

Love would fill our hearts right up to the brim She’d tell all her friends, “I’m crazy about him” Yes I know she’s for me I feel it down to my cowboy boot Where else can I get a gal with 20 digits and a 6-breasted swimsuit… Yee Haw!!!

uly puts us right in the middle of bikini season and I’m still in a one piece with a skirt attached. Not good. As a believer in storing fat for the winter, I only gained a respectable 5 lbs since the Christmas Holidays. I was quite proud of this accomplishment until I was aptly reminded by my cousin Harmony that 5 lbs is 25% of my body weight. I can see why Aunt Harriet didn’t name her Charmony. To put this blonde dimwit in perspective, when I told her about my winter weight philosophy, she said, “Henrietta, you can’t just let nature run wild.” Really? Of course I rolled my eyes and then she said, “Just because I’m stupid doesn’t mean I’m dumb.” To keep her out of my business for a while, I replied, “Ok Harmony, if you’re so smart then tell me why glue doesn’t stick to the inside of the bottle and why you can’t taste your tongue?” She is still sitting on the same bench working that all out in her pretty little head. However, gastro-phobe Harmony is right. I have to shed these 5 lbs. I’ve tried Billy Blank’s “Kickboxing For 4 Leggers” and Suzanne Sommers’ “ABS-Olutely Canine”… didn’t work. I’ve tried The South Claw Diet, Cur-Tail and Biscuit Busters. No results. I’ve decided I need a new approach…I’m going to shake it off. I’m going to dance those Greenies off my be-hind to my newfound love, Country Music.

WORLD SERIES OF DOG SHOWS By: Michelle Mantor & Contributing Writers Photos By: www. photographybyprudence.com unless otherwise noted

I

t's time for parading pooches to converge on NRG Arena for one of the largest dog shows and canine extravaganzas in the country, coming to H-Town July 18-22! Celebrating its 41st year, the Houston show will host over 10,000 dogs and 30,000 visitors. This action-packed, all-things-dog event is a great way to learn more about purebred dogs, a variety of dog sports, pet care, local humane organizations, breed rescue groups and much more. There is something for everyone, from the experienced dog show aficionado to families who just love dogs!

Don’t worry about figuring out the details… we’ve got it all for you right here in Houston PetTalk! The first order of business will be to get a show schedule and map out the events you are most interested in visiting. You'll find great information in our feature story and more specific times of events at www.houstondogshows.com.

THE SCHEDULE The show is termed a “series” because it is actually three separate shows presented daily, also known in the show world as a “cluster” of dog shows. Each day, the individual show is hosted by a local club including the Houston Kennel Club, Galveston Kennel Club, Beaumont Kennel Club and Houston Combined Specialty Association. Thursday will be not be a full show day but rather a show of a limited number of breeds, with the full shows commencing on Friday through Sunday. For the inexperienced show attendee, you’ll be delighted by the variety of events, seminars, shopping and entertainment venues.

CONFORMATION

T

he judging in Conformation is a series of single elimination contests. Each breed has a winner’s dog and winner’s female and Champions competing for Best of Breed (BOB). Each BOB competes in their respective variety group for Best in Group. The seven Best in Group winners compete for Best in Show (see page 29). The Best in Show winner is the only dog that was undefeated that day. At the Houston World Series of Dog Shows, there are three separate shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with no overall winner for the weekend. The breed judging divides males and females who are not champions into several classes. The males compete in classes such as Puppy, American bred, Bred by Exhibitor and

Open. The winner of each class then competes for winner’s male dog. The process is repeated for females. Each of the winners receives points towards their championship. The winner’s male and female then go back into the ring and compete with the Champions for Best of Breed. The Best of Breed winners then move on to compete in one of the seven variety groups. The judging for individual breeds takes place for most of the day. Judging starts at 8:30 am and individual breed judging is usually complete by approximately 2 pm. Variety Group judging starts immediately after breed judging is complete followed by Best In Show judging to name the top dog of the day.

ROAD TO C BEST IN

Show...

onformation at a dog show is a process of elimination resulting in one dog being named Best in Show. Only the Best of Breed winners advance to compete in the Group competitions. Each AKC breed falls into one of seven groups: Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding. Four placements are awarded in each group, but only the first place winner advances to the Best In Show competition. Some examples of the groups include:

TERRIER GROUP This group includes breeds such as the Airedale, Yorkshire Terrier and Scottish Terrier. Terriers were bred to rid property of vermin such as rats.

HERDING GROUP These dogs were bred to help shepherds and ranchers herd their livestock. The Briard, Collie, German Shepherd Dog and Corgi are some of the breeds in this group.

SPORTING GROUP These dogs were bred to hunt game birds both on land and in water. The breeds in this group include Pointers, Retrievers, Setters and Spaniels.

Photos ŠThinkstock Photos

HOUND GROUP These breeds were bred for hunting game by sight or scent. These breeds include such dogs as Afghan Hounds, Beagles, Borzoi, and Greyhounds.

WORKING GROUP These dogs were bred to pull carts, guard property and perform search and rescue services. Among the breeds in this group are the Akita, Malamute and Newfoundland.

TOY GROUP These dogs were bred to be household companions. This group includes little dogs such as the Chihuahua, Maltese, Pomeranian, Pug and Papillon.

NON-SPORTING GROUP This diverse group includes the French Bulldog, Dalmatian and Poodle. These dogs vary in size and function, and many are considered companion dogs.

FLYBALL 30

www.houstonpettalk.com

eveloped in the 1930s, Obedience is one of the AKC’s oldest sporting events. Obedience is a test of how well a dog is trained. In order to qualify, a dog must correctly accomplish a number of exercises. Essentially, the handler issues commands and the dog must immediately perform the skill. Training a dog to participate in AKC obedience trials increases a dog's understanding and reliability in responding to commands such as "sit", "down", "stay", "come", and "heel." Obedience can be a sport enjoyed by anyone of any age and with any dog breed. The sport offers various designations for competition based on the handlers experience - from novice to expert, there is something for everyone!

F

lyball is for the super fast rock stars of the canine world! The sport is high adrenaline and appeals to dogs that take the "fetch drive" into overdrive. There are two racing lanes set up side by side with two teams racing 4 dogs each. The competition is based on speed and precision. Dogs race down a lane consisting of 4 jumps spaced 10 feet apart. The dogs trigger a Flyball box at the end of their racing lane, retrieve their tennis ball, and race back over the four jumps to the start/finish line where they pass the next dog headed out to run the course. The dogs run at top speed with some dogs completing the pattern in less than 4 seconds. The team to finish first with all the dogs correctly running the course wins. Flyball competitors can be any breed, just like rock-n-roll “mutts. No pedigree required. Just skill and passion! Get ready to rock as you watch these speed demons in action, located in Hall A.

MUSICAL FREESTYLE M

FRISBEE™

T

he pure athletic ability of these pups is worth coming out to see as they fly through the air, jump over their handler's back and race to catch the disc, all to hand-clapping music. The precision and teamwork between dog and handler is fascinating. The dogs truly love it! Check the schedule for exhibition times (this is not a competition but it's definitely a crowd pleaser), Friday through Sunday.

CANINE

eticulously trained canines keep perfectly in step with their festively costumed owners as they dance to music. You’ll enjoy this charming display of discipline and affection. The object of musical freestyle is to display the dog and handler in an original dance, using music and intricate movements to showcase teamwork, artistry, costuming, athleticism and style in interpreting the theme of the music.

t’s that time of year again. Groom Texas is scheduled in conjunction with the Houston Series of Dog Shows. Groom Texas brings great educational seminars to our local Texas groomers and it also brings grooming competition. Although the seminars aren’t available to the general public, the competitions are. This show brings In world class groomers from all over the United States. Many of them travel the country from trade show to trade show accumulating points to achieve Groom Team USA status. Most people will see a contest ring full of groomers. However, what’s really going on is a multi-experience level competition. Groomers representing 3 levels of grooming experience are represented within the grooming ring. Levels include Novice, Intermediate and Expert. Before the contest begins, judges will prejudge dogs. They are looking at prep work. It is important to start with clean coats and ears. Proper drying, combing, brushing and nail length are all taken into consideration. Contestants are judged on Profile, Technique and Finish. Profile refers to how the outline of the dogs is shaped and balanced when looking at it from show side, dogs head to the right hand side of handler, tail to the left. Technique refers to the grooming tools and motions used to achieve the proper look on

Techniques include but aren’t limited to scissoring, clipper work, hand stripping, carding combing and brushing. Finish is the final appearance of the coat. Hand strip dogs must be tight and lay flat. Scissored coats will be combed up and out to check if all hair is even. Some coats should have a shiny appearance while others must have a marcel finish (sprayed with water to give a wavy look). All dogs must be groomed to breed standard with exceptions in the Creative and Potpourri/Mixed Breed class. Contests have time limits according to breed and size. Expert level groomers receive points according to the number of competitors and placement level of their competition. Points are accumulated over two years. The top 10 at the end of two years earn a place on Groom Team USA. Generally the top 5 travel to the World Team Competition. Our team proudly brought home the Gold from Belgium in 2017.

STUDENT ART SHOW T here may be no better way to celebrate the love of dogs other than through expression of art. The annual Dr. Mari Jon Filla student art contest is always a fan favorite. Area students compete in various categories and their talent never ceases to amaze the crowd. Stop by to see the displays of creativity including the winners throughout the dog show in the center of the hall next to the Conformation arena.

MY DOG CAN DO THAT A few years back, a new event was added to the show: AKC® My Dog Can Do That! This event was well received by show attendees and is back again this year. For non-registered dogs, the event invites all dogs of different breeds and mixes to test their skills in agility without the pressure of a real competition. With the help of professional coaches, attendees can have their dogs run a condensed version of the agility courses that “professional” agility dogs face. There is no additional cost beyond paying admission to the show and the event is open to all dogs as long as they are 6 months old and on a regular 4-to-6 foot leash. Houston PetTalk Magazine

CAP DOGHOUSE AUCTION

S

ee some of the most luxe dog houses available, all designed by Houstonians to be auctioned off for charity. GROOMING & CRATING

P

repping and pampering for the show ring can be quite an ordeal! Each breed standard has specific requirements for the dog’s coat and hair “style”. The groomers and handlers work diligently to make sure their entry puts his or her best paw forward in the ring. Take some time to tour the crating and grooming area to see the action. But, remember these pups are being prepared for the ring and are on a tight time schedule so use your dog show etiquette and please don’t disturb the dogs/handlers, just observe.

Prestonwood Kennels

By Michelle Mantor

An Oasis of Learning and Fun!

L

ike most things in life, good pet parenting takes more time and resources than one might think. From healthcare to choosing the best food, training or care while we are away, stress can quickly set in if we have to juggle these important decisions. Thankfully, there are pet facilities that offer quality, convenience, safety and very importantly, a good time for our pups to take your stress away! One such oasis for dogs is Prestonwood Kennels. Although Prestonwood is essentially in an urban environment in NW Houston, as soon as you enter the property you feel like

you’ve left the kinetic energy of the city behind and stepped into a relaxing, country atmosphere with space to breathe and room to romp and play. Set on just over 5 acres, Prestonwood Kennels offers just the right mix of safety, comfort, mental stimulation and exercise all at a very reasonable rate. To be sure, there are plenty of boarding facilities in Houston but some rise above to offer a plethora of services and amenities and Prestonwood Kennels is among this select group. Whether you are in need of boarding while on vacation or a business trip, daycare to help your pup release some energy and

socialize or perhaps a little training or grooming is in order, you will find it all just minutes from Sam Houston Parkway and Hwy 249, near Willowbrook Mall. The facility offers spacious suites and traditional boarding, allowing pet owners to choose the level of amenities for their pet's stay. But no matter what package of boarding or daycare you may choose, rest assured that Prestonwood's staff is experienced at pet care to ensure your pet has a safe and pleasure-filled experience. The property is monitored at all times and the owner Guinette Peebles lives on the property. She is also quite a stickler for cleanliness. She notes, "We care about the health and safety of our guests as well as the amount of fun they have. Here at Prestonwood, we use all GREEN cleaning products and we are proud of our sanitation practices." Just to prove her point that she strives for perfection, Guinette invites any pet owner to tour the facility, front to back, at any time and she also notes the facility is protected by a back-up generator for any weather emergencies. The real key to a successful boarding business is the passion of the owner because it is definitely an endeavor that requires the love of dogs. Not only can doggie guests at Prestonwood have a good time, but they can have a productive experience as well with the training

The training menu includes obedience class, puppy training, conformation class, board-ntrain and private lessons. Prestonwood’s philosophy is built around providing the

best life possible for your dog and training is an important step in a rewarding partnership. There’s no need to banish your dog to the bedroom when guests arrive or sneak out for midnight walks to avoid other dog walkers. The training staff at Prestonwood can help you build

that bond of trust and communication that’s essential to a fun life with your pet. Along with the attention to safety and quality, Prestonwood offers something else that every pet owner craves, convenience! You don’t have to travel to multiple locations for your dog’s essential needs because Prestonwood offers most everything from training, to daycare to boarding and yes, the big one, grooming. Many pet owners fret about various aspects of grooming - Is the groomer experienced? Will they handle my pet with care and safe techniques? Will they be kind to my pet so that they don’t fear grooming? Are the products good for my pet’s skin? Will they butcher the haircut I request? Are the prices too high? These are all legitimate concerns but no need to worry with Prestonwood’s grooming staff. They have the experience needed and the heart for loving pet care to put your

good game of fetch to release some energy, a siesta, then a late afternoon dip in the pool and an evening hair brushing session that would leave the hardiest of pups wilting in relaxation. It’s entirely possible that your pet will have more fun on their Prestonwood vacation than you have on yours! With resort style

living, it’s no wonder pets come bounding through the door ready for their stay in VIP suites, bunkhouses with indoor/ outdoor access or special services that can be added to any stay including doggie ice cream treats or extra playtime. Health KEEPING Pets Safe

Tips From an Emergency Care Doctor

P

et ownership is thought by many to be a privilege, a luxury by some and a convenience by others. Regardless, it is certainly a commitment for the life span of your pet. As the owner, you have to be vigilant about the dangers that can bring harm to your pet and be attentive to safety. Heat Stroke - As an emergency doctor, I see many situations that could have been prevented with the proper knowledge. All too common in Houston is the case of heat stroke. We mostly know that we cannot leave our pets in a hot car with no ventilation, but what about that ten-minute walk around the block? Dogs cannot perspire like us so they rely on panting for effective heat exchange. If the temperature and humidity are too high, heat stroke can occur within a few minutes. Elderly or weakened dogs only compound the problem. Your dog may have been able to jog a mile last year, but cannot do it this year. Also, there are medical conditions that might adversely affect your dog’s ability to breathe. The number one breed we see in our hospital with heat stroke are Labrador Retrievers yet theoretically, any dog can suffer from the demise of heat stroke. Snakes - The Houston and surrounding areas contain cottonmouths (water moccasins), copperheads and rattlesnakes. There are even a few coral snake bites, but these are far less common. Dogs are mostly bitten on their face and cats receive bites to their paws. Know your area, what these snakes look like and even consider adverse training. Stuck By A Vehicle - The third preventable danger is being hit by a car, especially with dogs. Do not allow your dogs to be off leash, unless in a protected area, away from motor vehicles. Your

50

www.houstonpettalk.com

dog might be the most obedient dog, but they can all be momentarily distracted by another animal. Toxins - Toxins and medications are another reason your dog or cat might make a trip to the ER. Chocolate, caffeine, Tylenol, ibuprofen, rat or mouse baits, grapes, raisins, sugar free gum containing Xylitol, snail bait, macadamia nuts, sago palm ingestion, lily plants, and yesterdaytoday-tomorrow plants make up the majority of toxicities that we encounter. Monitor Urination - With cats, monitoring their litter habits can save their life. If a cat or dog cannot urinate, they can accumulate toxic amounts of potassium in the blood and that can stop the heart. Any cat that is straining to urinate, vocalizing during urination, or even passing blood should be evaluated immediately. Intestinal Blockages - Another large population of pets has something lodged in their intestines and it needs to be surgically removed. These pets will have a loss of appetite, vomit or may have diarrhea. Cats like to eat things like string, tinsel or dental floss. Dogs seem to favor

By: Dr. Laura Noaker vergi247.com

undergarments and things best left to the imagination. Ignoring the signs can only lead to increased hospital stay, expense and possibly loss of life. This also applies to large dogs that are unsuccessful at vomiting. The ER doctor will feel the abdominal cavity for air distention and often order an X-ray. This is because large dogs can twist their stomach on its axis, requiring emergency surgery. Some know this as bloat, torsion or gastric dilation/volvulus (GDV). Untreated Wounds - Pets that have an argument can lead to various cuts, abrasions and dangerous abscesses. Many dogs seem to challenge each other to a duel in the dog park while cats will fight over territory and breeding rights. Many dog housemates will fight over food, toys or affection. Squealing children can sound like a toy to a dominant dog and extra caution should be taken with small children. Infections - Infections abound in our area because of the humid conditions. All puppies should be vaccinated for Parvovirus and all puppies and kittens should receive medication to control internal and external parasites. Both should be vaccinated for rabies and diseases specific to their species. Geriatric Needs - The final category is reserved for those special pets that have spent their lives devoted to us, bringing us cheer, loyalty and solace. These are often geriatric pets that look to us for comfort in their final days. It is our last act of humanity and kindness in the face of our own sadness as we say our final goodbyes. I am convinced that we carry a piece of their souls embedded within us, to call upon their memories to remind us that once, we were loved as only a pet can love.

FELINE Urethral Obstruction Why it matters...

"M

y cat is going to the box all of the time, but he isn't doing his business." Whenever I hear that (or something similar) my heartrate goes up, because whether the owner realizes or not, we may have a true medical emergency on our hands. I am talking about urethral obstruction in male cats, a relatively common problem that requires immediate medical attention. The urethra is the tube that connects from the urinary bladder to the outside and allows the bladder to be emptied. Although both males and females have a urethra, the urethra of male cats is quite narrow and longer than that of females, making male cats more likely to get a blockage. Although there are numerous diseases that could cause a blockage, the most common is a urethral "plug" made of mucous, crystals and cells of the bladder lining that clump together and cannot pass through the narrow male urethra. Once the urethra is blocked, the cat cannot void urine from the bladder. This is a life-threatening condition. The kidneys of the affected cat will continue

52

www.houstonpettalk.com

By: Andrew Tesh, DVM, Bingle Vet, www.binglevet.com

to produce urine and the bladder will continue to expand to hold the urine. Eventually, the bladder will get so big that it cannot expand further. At that point, the tissues of the bladder will begin to weaken and even die due to the pressure. The kidneys themselves can also suffer this pressure necrosis. Also, since the cat can no longer excrete excess electrolytes

from his body, he may have a dangerously slow heartrate. Treatment for urethral obstruction almost always involves placing a urinary catheter through the affected urethra. This will dislodge the blockage and allow the urine to be released from the bladder. Most cats will require deep sedation or anesthesia to place the catheter. Without the catheter the bladder could burst,

which would necessitate emergency surgery. Once the pressure has been relieved, the veterinarian may use IV fluids, injections, medications or special diets to help treat any underlying disease he/she may find. Most cats will require several days of hospitalized care to become stable enough the remove the urinary catheter. Unfortunately, some cats will suffer catastrophic kidney damage due to the obstruction. These pets may never recover and may not even survive. Early diagnosis and intervention is the key to a better prognosis. Most cats will "tell" their owners something is wrong. They may visit the litterbox more than normal and they may even vocalize while attempting to urinate. After straining to urinate there may be little to no urine present in the box. As the pressure in the bladder increases, the affected cats may become quite painful or uncomfortable. As electrolytes become unbalanced and the heartrate decreases, the cats may become very lethargic or sleepy. Please do not hesitate to take your cat to a veterinarian if you notice any of the clinical signs above, or anything else that worries you. It is always better to be safe rather than sorry when it comes to a medical emergency like urethral obstruction.

Tail End DOG DAYCARE What's New?

By: Debbie Oliver CPDT-KSA www.missdaisys.com

W

hen I started in the pet care business in 1995, dog daycare really wasn’t even a thing. You certainly didn’t need to worry about overcrowding or how many dogs per attendant. You were mainly explaining to your customers what dog daycare was and why it might be beneficial for their dog. As one of the pioneers in the industry, I’m not quite sure that we knew what we should be worried about, after all, how hard could it be to let dogs play all day? Fast forward to now and lots of owners want their dogs to attend daycare. Daycare facilities are everywhere and the more dogs the merrier right? Well, not so much. With the increased number of pet owners wanting to get their dogs out for the day, we quickly learned that when you have a larger number of dogs together, you really can’t let them play because high arousal in large groups is simply not safe. Daycare attendants can’t safely play with the dogs or even allow much prolonged play with each other. Toys, balls, chase, many of the activities that our dogs love cannot be allowed. Now we just have to watch and observe, similar to a life guard at a busy pool! Owners picking up their dogs at the end of the day are happy because Fido is tired from a full day of play right? Well, now that daycare has been around for more than 20 years, many dog daycare professionals admit that complete exhaustion of the dogs is unhealthy and should not be the goal. Today, there is a new kind of daycare focused on enrichment and many call it Dog Daycare 2.0. The Dog Gurus is a company that consults with pet care

54

www.houstonpettalk.com

Dog Daycare at Miss Daisy’s Dog Camp

facilities and helps many of these providers to either switch their daycare program over to 2.0 or offer it as an additional option. In general this type of program will include the followingSmaller groups of dogs – 2-8 maximum Short periods of high energy play – now we can really play with them, get toys out, throw balls and let them run and chase. Since the play is higher energy and more active, quality rest time is important throughout the day. High quality of interactions with staff – which allows us the chance to really know the individual likes and dislikes of each dog. Some of our campers had been coming here for years and I thought I really knew them until we changed our daycare format. The formerly “couch

potato” pups were now very active! Snacks with food puzzles and/ or training time – mental enrichment is just as important as physical exercise. My personal favorite is supervised chill times. This allows us to put small groups of different size dogs together which may not be safe during high energy play times. I want our pups to learn that although it’s fun to play with other dogs, it’s not always appropriate. Just chill and hang out with them! After consulting with many businesses regarding Daycare 2.0, Susan Briggs of The Dog Gurus says, “This is a very exciting change to our industry. We continue to learn so many things that help our dogs not only keep busy during their days away, but they go home behaviorally and emotionally better as a result."

WHO'S WATCHING YOUR BABY? Finding The Right Pet Sitter For Your Needs

M

aking sure our furry ones are well taken care of is foremost in good pet owner’s minds. Some of the questions to consider include: Where should I have my dog groomed that I can feel secure the establishment is safe, sanitary and caring toward my pet? When I travel and need to board my dog or cat, how do I determine the best option for my pet’s needs and my budget? Who is the best veterinarian for my pet that’s convenient to my location? These are just a few of the questions that we often hear from our readers. Another area of need is pet sitting. Whether your pup needs a walk because your work schedule keeps you away from

home for long hours, or perhaps you are traveling and prefer in-home care for your pet due to age or other reasons, there is plenty of opportunity to need the valuable service of pet sitting. I can remember 20 years ago when pet sitting was virtually unheard of. If you needed to leave town, you called the

neighbor to check on pets and feed them. Unfortunately, this option proved to be fraught with problems and even danger because the “neighbor” isn’t a trained professional. Too many pets can accidentally escape, medications may not be be given properly and so forth. In the end, the pets didn’t always get the care they

FINDING Resolution

Learn To Listen To Others, Both Human & Animal

I

am a goal-oriented, list-making individual. It's how I'm wired, and it has helped me be productive and successful in many ways. However, being goal-oriented doesn't always work so well when building relationships. What if the other individual doesn't have the same goals as you do? This has been the case many times in my life, and my tendency was to bulldoze over them with my lack of concern for their goals. My goals were better, more thought out, more important, etc. What does that do to this relationship that I valued to work on so much? It completely undermines the whole thing! So, how did I learn to stop this destructive pattern in my relationships? Horses! How many of you have tried to get an animal that weighs over 1000 pounds to meet your personal goals? It's not easy. Yes, it is possible to force them to do many things, but can you catch them easily the next day? Do they really want to have a relationship with you after you have met said goals? Mine didn't. Mine ran away and fought many things I tried to “teach”. What did it take for me to listen to the horse's thought on our relationship? An unplanned dismount is the nicest way I've heard it phrased. When a horse goes to bucking, it is pretty clear it doesn't respect your leadership. A wise man once asked me what happened before that buck. I answered, “Lots of little things that I ignored, actually.” I'm too old to ignore those little signals anymore. It hurts to hit the ground with that kind of force! As I've learned to listen to horses better, it has also helped me to listen to people better. Have you ever asked a friend what they want to receive out of the relationship you have? Do they have needs that aren't being met? If they aren't treated respectfully and valued,

YES, IT IS POSSIBLE TO FORCE THEM TO DO MANY THINGS, BUT CAN YOU CATCH THEM EASILY THE NEXT DAY? they may not stick around. Setting goals is still helpful, especially in helping me think of the steps to help myself achieve them. I just want to make sure I am not ruining relationships along the way. So, my goal setting looks different now as I make sure it includes the friends I value the most. These are a few of my relational goal ideas for the next year. They are all oriented toward preventing those blow ups, like

Place for Peanut, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization founded by Megan Cardet, as a sanctuary for horses, donkeys and miniature horses and provides special programs and equine therapy to children and veterans in hospitals. The organization is devoted to the rescue of horses and other equines from slaughter houses. Since it was founded in January 2016, more than 150 horses and donkeys have been saved. The sanctuaries are in Katy, and Tomball, where approximately 30 equines are being cared for and are in therapy training. PRINCESS & MO Meet two mini horses looking for a forever home. First is Mo, who was saved from a kill pen and came to the sanctuary as an unhandled stallion. He is vaccinated, wormed and gelded. Mo is still learning to trust, but comes up and eats from human hands. He is super bonded to Princess, an older mare that arrived at the sanctuary with him on Christmas Day. Princess, an older kid-broke mare, is super gentle. She is lame as she has a permanent limp in her front end. Princess loves people and enjoys being groomed. These two must stay together. If you are looking for double the love, Mo and Princess are ready for you!

Each issue, we highlight a local 501(c)3 animal charity in hopes that our readers will find their true love with one of these rescue groups! Charities are chosen from PetTalk GoFetch, our pet directory website and free mobile App, www. pettalkgofetch.com. To be listed as a rescue group, please email info@houstonpettalk.com.

CONSERVATION Corner As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo or other local organizers such as the TWRC Wildlife Center. This issue, we are highlighting how to keep our wildlife safe. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.

id you know there are five species of sea turtles inhabiting the Gulf of Mexico? They include the Kemp’s ridley, green, leatherback, Atlantic hawksbill, and loggerhead sea turtles, and they are all considered to be either threatened or endangered. Though these species face

SMALL ACTIONS SAVE ANIMALS IN A BIG WAY

many threats, we can all perform simple acts to help protect turtles and their ocean home. One easy step to keep our oceans healthy for sea turtles and other marine animals is replacing single-use plastic with reusable options. You can take a reusable canvas bag with you when you go shopping and politely decline single-use plastic bags. You can also use a reusable water bottle and refill it at water fountains. Lastly, you can say no to single-use plastic straws. You can also learn how to protect our oceans by visiting the zoo. During a World Oceans Day celebration at the zoo, a young boy learned the importance of keeping plastics out of the ocean to protect aquatic animals

while visiting with a zoo volunteer. One item he saw was a plastic milk jug with sea turtle bite marks. After seeing the threats plastics have on animals in the ocean, the boy wanted to take action, so he and his family signed up for a beach clean-up later that summer. While cleaning the beach, the young boy came across a small plastic juice bottle, and he immediately recognized sea turtle bite marks like the ones seen during his recent zoo visit. This young conservationist was then able to share his story with family and friends, teaching them how they can all take small actions to protect sea turtles. Over the years, the Houston Zoo has committed to taking big actions to save animals, and their habitats,

in the wild. In 2015, the zoo removed plastic bags in the gift shops, keeping an estimated 80,000 plastic bags from entering landfills and the environment each year. The zoo has a collection of canvas bags designed with images depicting the animals that benefit from a reduction of plastic bags in the ocean for sale in the gift shops. Then, in 2017, the zoobased conservation organization went one step further and eliminated single-use plastic water bottles from all concession stands. The elimination of single-use plastic water bottles has a significant, wildlife saving, impact on the environment by reducing the amount of plastic waste by nearly 300,000 single-use plastic bottles in just one year!

Now, in 2018, the zoo has gone away with all singleuse plastic straws. This is just one more way the zoo inspires guests to take simple actions and protect wildlife. Removing single-use plastic straws highlights the need to protect marine animals from debris. Choosing reusable straws, instead of single-use straws, keeps these plastics out of the oceans, thus helping save sea turtles swimming there. The zoo not only helps sea turtles by eliminating singleuse plastic on grounds, but several zoo team members also aide in the rehabilitation and release of injured sea turtles annually. Earlier this summer, the Houston Zoo, along with our partners at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

(NOAA), released a total of 32 sea turtles back into the ocean. These sea turtles were found along the beaches in Galveston and picked up by NOAA to receive medical case by Houston Zoo veterinary clinic staff. The zoo provides medical care to nearly 80 sea turtles each year!

In addition to replacing single-use plastic items with reusable options, you can protect wildlife by visiting the Houston Zoo! Every time you come see the animals at the zoo, a portion of your ticket proceeds go towards saving them in the wild.
