October 2018

Editorial

H

ooray for October! I love October because it represents cooler weather, fall leaf colors, college football, the traditional Blessing of the Animals in accordance with St. Francis of Assisi and all of the other festivities associated with All Hallows Eve. There are so many pet festivals, dog walks, costume contests - there is energy everywhere and much of it can be enjoyed with our animals! As a matter of fact, there are so many fall festivals for pets that I’m booked every weekend as a media sponsor and, although it's tiring, it's great fun to meet Houstonians who are out and about with their pet, having a good time, enjoying life as a pet owner. I am lucky enough to be asked to judge a number of costume contests and I absolutely love doing it! The creativity never ceases to amaze me and the patience of the pets wearing their costumes is equally amazing. The costumed creatures make me giggle and I appreciate their goodnatured spirits. Speaking of costumes, get that crazy creation ready because there are many chances for you and your mutt (or kitty,

Issue 09: Volume 18 www.houstonpettalk.com

or lizard,or...fill in the blank!) to strut your stuff. From PetFest in Old Town Spring and the annual CAP Howl-OWeen Walk to Bridgeland’s Howl-OWeen Fest plus more, every weekend in October offers up the chance to go have a fur ball! Come visit our booth at these events and purchase a t-shirt, Henrietta commemorative glass or take pics for our social media. For these events and more, visit our online directory and event site, pettalkgofetch.com or download the free App. In this issue's feature story, we are celebrating Fun Things To Do With Your Pet. Yes, there are many fall festivals and opportunities to compete in crazy costume contests, but there is also lots more to Houston’s vibrant community of pet lovers. We're showcasing items like pet-friendly dining, DIY projects, local travel, sporting activities, parks and recreation and much more. Check out the feature to map out some new ideas for you and your furry loved one(s). October also has a very special day designated for feline aficionados, National Cat Day on October 29. You can bet the internet will explode with

the cutest pictures ever but more important than a funfest of cat photos, this day reminds everyone to spay/neuter and ADOPT from rescues and shelters. Also in this issue, check out the story from VERGI as they stepped in to help the stray and abused dog, Gus, that became a social media sensation. See how GUS, although badly injured, helped bring the community together. And, speaking of health, don’t miss the extensive article from VCRC on the topic of essential oils for pets. They cover the basics of the benefits of the oils, how and when to use them and if you are interested in learning how to apply them to your own pet, they event teach a class! Take a look on page 58. We hope to see you at the many pet events throughout the month. When your pet has on their spooktacular costume, be sure to take a pic and enter them to win a $300 gift certificate to Sunset Animal Hospital, see details on page 20. Enjoy the Fall!

Party Pups Cover pooches "Jackson" and "Winston" were all smiles during our photoshoot at JoyBox Fine Flowers as they posed for our Birthday Bash cover, celebrating the fun things we can do with our pets. Why were they smiling? Because they were about to eat the scrumptious doggy birthday cake generously provided by Woof Gang Bakery West U. Cover by Smith House Photography/Becki Smith.

Henrietta:

On Saving Her Brethren (Again) We’d watered the hydrants and chased the squirrels, Had our typical game of fetch featuring boys vs. girls;

I went house to house rescuing two and four-leggers together, Determined to save them all from this horrendous weather;

She was clutching one Gucci shoe with eyes of fire, Staring down at me Oh yes, this was dire!

When out came our parents who said in a hurry, “Hurricane Harvey is coming, run with a flurry!”

With skill and bravery I made one rescue after another, Until it was time to save Dragon Lady A.K.A…my mother;

“Henrietta!”, she seethed clenching her teeth with displeasure, “if you did this on purpose you are grounded FOREVER!”

We scampered inside and battened down the hatches, While mom made dog biscuits by the batches and batches;

It happened in an instant and my life flashed before my eyes, I stepped on DL’s dress and the boat promptly capsized;

“Mom, of course I would never do that I swear”, As I held back my laughter when I looked at her hair;

For two days we were stranded as the rain poured down, Wreaking untold havoc on our beloved H-Town;

Up she sputtered from the dirty brown water, Instantly I wished I was not her daughter;

She was dripping wet and covered in mud, Unseemly for her self-proclaimed lineage as a Blue Blood;

I watched out the window as my street became a river, And dreamed of my favorite Zuke’s treats…chicken liver!

Harvey had definitely brought misfortune and disaster, But one shining light was the state of my Master;

But I realized as much as I enjoyed dreaming about food, Thinking of myself was just plain rude;

Serves her right for fleeing a storm in fancy designer wear, But I did feel a little sorry So I said this prayer;

My compadres were in danger as houses filled with water, Oh, how I wish I could be a superhero...a Sea Otter!

“Dear Lord, please give me patience for this woman with the brain of a gnat, And I promise to stop my goal of trying to annihilate the species CAT."

But alas my well rounded body had no ability to float, So the next best thing was to hail a boat;

Just one year ago, Houstonians were reeling from Hurricane Harvey. It’s been a long road but we’ve proven we are #HoustonStrong! Not to relive that horrible storm, but Henrietta wanted to pay her annual respects by running her poem again. We know…she is incorrigible so we just say YES!

oin Friends For Life Shelter at their gala, themed “The Ceiling Can’t Hold Us”, to celebrate 16 years of breaking through barriers to a better pet community. Over those 16 years, FFL has created and ran the nation’s first Cohabited Public Evacuation Shelter (animals/people) during Hurricane harvey and now join the American Red Cross and other leaders in authors of the national

disaster manual. The shelter has also provided 4600 spay/neuter surgeries through the Fix Houston program. In addition, FFL has provided a home for many animals that would not have been able to withstand traditional shelter environments including seniors, bottle babies, feline leukemia positive cats, and other animals with health or behavior issues. With all of this good work Friends For

Life has provided the animals of Houston, let’s help them continue to help pets in need by supporting their gala and donating to their cause. This fun-tastic party is October 12, 7pm at Silver Street Studios, 2000 Edwards St. and will include delicious food, dancing and an amazing auction. GET THE PAWTY STARTED 1. FUN STARTS WITH ADOPTING A FRIEND

How can you pawty without a friend? One requirement to get started is that you need a furry friend to share all of this FUN stuff with! If you don’t already have a fur kid or you think you need to add to the pack, ADOPT a lovable animal from one of Houston’s MANY shelters and rescue groups. From Katy to Spring to Clear Lake and everywhere in between and beyond, PetTalk has a list of great choices for adoption at pettalkgofetch.com…find your friend today and share your adoption pic with us on our Instagram page!

Throw a Birthday Bash: Whether it's your pup’s birthday or you just want to celebrate all things dog, throw a bash! Barkday Planner, a local Houston doggy party planner that offers a variety of packages, can provide you with all the goodies you need including a yummy, specially designed cake. Find them at: thebarkdayplanner.com. Or if you decide to go DIY for the party, get a scrumptious Doggy Cake from Woof Gang Bakery - they have multiple locations around Greater Houston.

Dinner, auction, entertainment - it’s a great cause and a fun evening! Find details in our monthly calendar.

2. PARTY DOWN!

4. FERRET OUT A FESTIVAL

Houston is FULL of fun festivals that offer an outing that you and your pet will love. Shopping, photo ops, contests..what's not to love? PetTalk’s Doggy Party on the Plaza is our favorite (of course:), held the first Saturday in April at City Centre; Plus, October is the biggest pet festival month of the year. Check out the calendar for events like PetFest In Old Town Spring, Howl-O-Ween Fest at Bridgeland and CAP’s Howl-O-Ween Dog Walk in Katy.

Houston PetTalk Magazine

SHOP YOUR TAIL OFF 5. SNIFF OUT PET GOODIES

The pet supply industry has taken Houston by storm (sorry, not our favorite word!), and stores are popping up everywhere to shop for food, treats, accessories, supplies and more. Our favorites are our sponsors of course! Patti’s Pet Depot in Memorial, Carter’s Pet Supply in Spring Branch/Memorial, Arne’s Pet Supply Store in the Heights. Take your pup down the aisles and let them choose a treat!

7. SHOP FOR HEALTHY STUFF

Visit Flying M Feed Co., who recently won a national award, and check out their indoor hydroponic farm consisting of 5 Tower Gardens and one root veggie Trug where they grow organic produce, indoors, year-round, that is specifically safe and healthy for people AND pets.

8. COMMISSION A KEEPSAKE

There is nothing more personal, unique and forever as a custom painting. All you have to do is send in a photo to create a one-of-a-kind painting for yourself or a fellow pet lover. Find an artist in PetTalk: Nancy Davis Keely, Kristel Peale, Julie Dow or get a custom cartoon-version from Jim Tweedy at Hollywood Frame Gallery on Bissonnet (self-portrait shown here is customizable to your pet).

May sound crazy but that’s exactly what I did! My dog was too big for my previous car so we found a pet-friendly, size-friendly version to make our outings easier on us both. One of the best pet-centric brands is Subaru and local dealership West Houston Subaru donates THOUSANDS of dollars a year to CAP so if you’re in the market…just sayin’….

6. BUY A CAR FOR YOUR DOG

10. BUILD OR PURCHASE AN OUTDOOR ENCLOSURE

FOR THE FELINES

9. CO-BUILD A PROJECT WITH YOUR KITTY

Check out this info-packed book with plenty of ways to keep you and your kitty busy on a project. Available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Stimulate your cat by providing them with their very own "kitty-space" in the great outdoors. There are many outdoor enclosures, and indoor structures, you can purchase but if you have the space and you're a DIY type, build an enclosure. Check out this AMAZING "burrow replica" my friend had built for her cats, as seen in the Harry Potter series. She hired a carpenter to produce this super-cool creation and she also constructed an indoor catwalk, lounging alcoves and an enclosed outdoor catwalk to her husband's office, providing her felines with their own special spaces. Yes, she is a wonderfully crazy cat lady! Go ahead and spoil your cat with some creativity... they will LOVE the many splendid things they can observe outdoors!

11. INTRODUCE A LEASH OR HARNESS If you want to expand your indoor cat's horizons in a safe way and add to the fun you can have together, try teaching your cat to walk on a leash/ harness. The ASPCA has a great "how to" article: www.aspca.org/pet-care/ virtual-pet-behaviorist/cat-behavior/teaching-your-cat-walk-leash.

12. CELEBRATE NATIONAL CAT DAY

October 29th is National Cat Day so take advantage of this feline focused day and spend some extra playtime with your kitty and maybe even buy him/her their favorite treat, catnip toy or wheat grass. Flying M Feed Store in NW Houston has an entire kitty section with gifts, treats, food and more to choose from and your kitty will appreciate the extra attention!

Houston PetTalk Magazine

BE A GOOD SPORT: GET MOVING 13. HIT THE TRAIL OR DO THE DOG PARK

You might be surprised to learn that the Greater Houston area has over 50 dog parks, each with varying amenities including water features and enclosures for small and large dogs. Find a list at pettalkgofetch.com/listing/dog-parks. You can also visit state parks like Big Thicket, Inks Lake State Park or Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge - just do your research to learn the policies or to find other pet-friendly state parks. Other good rails to consider are Memorial Park, Terry Hershey Park, The Woodlands Trails & Pathways, Seabrook Trail…there are plenty more to choose from!

15. GO DOCK DIVING

www.houstonpettalk.com

Jumping from a dock into a pool of water to fetch a “bumper” might be one of the most exciting things a sporting dog can do (in their mind)...and it wears them out which is good for you as the owner! Dock Diving facilities typically offer training and you can also go on to compete if your dog rocks the dock. Houston Dog Ranch offers a state-of-the-art program, houstondogranch.com. Also check out houstondivedogs.com.

16. LEARN AGILITY

Great exercise for the mind and body, agility is a sport that you can participate in WITH your dog. Find instruction at pettalkgofetch. com and search listings for agility training.

17. HEAD TO THE HILL COUNTRY Just a few hours away, the Texas landscape changes and when we need a break, a change of scenery is an awesome reset. Hill country is a favorite destination and it’s the perfect place to vacation with your dog. Two of our top choices include Abundance Retreat in Wimberley and The Hyatt Regency Lost Pines. At Abundance, you’ll find two unique and cozy cabins on Cypress Creek that provide a peaceful place to relax and plenty of fun for your pet too

(kayak on the creek together!): abundanceretreat.com. At the Hyatt, pets are welcome at this beautiful resort that sits between Bastrop and Austin. Pups receive a bowl and bed during their stay, plus an amenity. There is a cost and weight limit so be sure to check out the rules in advance. The resort offers hiking, lazy river, sports, horseback riding, campfire smores and more! Find details at hyatt.com.

TRAVEL TIME 18. SOAK UP THE SUN AND SURF IN GALVESTON

Runner-Up Sand N Sea Photo Contest 2018

If you have all day or even a few days to enjoy coastal canine fun, head to Galveston Island where dogs are welcome and there is plenty to do. My family recently headed to the island to enjoy Schlitterbahn - which was crowded, not to mention other problems we encountered - so although I am not inclined to ever do that again, I do LOVE just chilling by the water and enjoying all the other fun things Galveston has to offer pets and their humans. For a one night stay, I choose La Quinta Inn & Suites on the Seawall because they are not only pet-friendly, but they Do Not

charge a pet cleaning fee or have size restrictions. Plus, breakfast is free! If my stay is longer than overnight, I book a pet-friendly home through Sand N Sea Properties. They have over 45 homes to choose from on the Bay and Gulf side. In addition to walking on the beach (pups must be on leash), you can kayak with your dog or head to the dog park where off-leash romping is welcome (Lindale Park at 400 Marine Drive ). Strolling the Strand is also fun for peoplewatching and several restaurants allow pets on their patios including Olympia Grill and Yaga’s Cafe. Sometimes you’ll

even find artists on the square who’ll be happy to create a keepsake painting of you and your furry family members. Cap off your trip with some nature watching on a BayWatch Dolphin Tour. Your dog can ride for free on this cruise that visits dolphins in their native habitat. The 45-minute tours are held on a boat with a covered interior, and the boat (which has no propeller) is designed to keep the dolphins safe. Your dog will love the sights and sounds of Galveston Bay and may even get an up-close look at a friendly dolphin!

19. STYACATION’S ARE FUN TOO!

Try a little pampering right in your own “backyard” by booking a stay at a luxury hotel that welcomes pets. Hotel ZaZa, The Downtown Marriott, The Westin at The Woodlands (on the waterway!), The Hilton Hotel NASA in Clear Lake - the list goes on. Enjoy spa treatments, long walks with your dog, nearby pet-friendly restaurants, and just enjoy being hanging out and getting a little R&R together.

Don’t be limited to just riding in Houston if you have a horse. You can explore the whole darn state if you want! To find Texas horseback riding trails, visit tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/parks/thingsto-do/equestrian…or head to the shore for a beach ride. Giddy Up!

25. SAVE AN EQUINE Get your horse a “mini” friend. Houston Humane Society has lots of miniature horses that need homes!

26. GET BLESSED

Each year in October, Christian communities across the globe celebrate the Feast of St. Francis with the Blessing of the Animals. The celebration is named for St. Francis of Assisi who believed all creatures to be spiritual beings. Take your horse to St. Andrews Episcopal Church’s pet blessing October 7. Some of the HPD Mounted Patrol horses have been blessed in past ceremonies so horses are welcome! See the calendar for details.

27. EXPRESS YOURSELF

Equine therapy programs actually have participants paint Mandalas on their equines. It’s a creative way to express yourself and spend time with your horse. Here’s a photo of me in Costa Rica with a Mandala I painted, with the prompt: "What is something you would like to change in your daily life?” My painting depicts that I feel overwhelmed and overscheduled every hour of the day from sun up to sun down. I still haven't solved that problem but I am more mindful of it! Painting horses goes back hundreds of years and was a predominant practice of Native Americans. Give it a try..it’s very powerful, thought-provoking and personal.

Officer Horace Mann, Jr. and Officer Tyson Hufstedler

Hooved Heroes A s Houstonians, we can’t deny that little feeling of pride that wells up within us when our city stands out for some endeavor or our team wins a championship. Let’s face it... we enjoy bragging rights like any other patriotic, proud member of a unique U.S. city. In Houston, we can be proud of many things including our World Championship Astros, our Oil & Gas industry that powers the world, our exploration and accomplishments in space, our world-class cuisine, our vibrant art and museum scene and the heroic spirit we displayed to the nation during Hurricane Harvey. But there is one important element of our city that we should be duly proud of as well that may surprise you–our Houston Police Department Mounted Patrol, which

is part of Strategic Operations, Homeland Security Command and Special Operations Division. Policing a city atop a massive sized animal is by no means easy but when you learn more about Mounted Patrol’s duties and accomplishments, you’ll understand why they are to be admired. "For example", shared Officer Horace Mann Jr. during our interview, "did you know that one Mounted Patrol officer equals 8 or more officers on foot?" I was totally impressed by this statistic because it embodies why the department is both valuable and unique in its capabilities. Officers and their horses can go into areas that a car or motorcycle cannot. Plus, they sit up high giving them a better vantage point and, of course horses are

faster than man! Not only is the 8 to 1 ratio of officers impressive, but the feat of riding a horse

f you are interested in learning more about HPD Mounted Patrol or you would just like to stop and pet the horses when you see them on duty, the department welcomes the public. Members of the mounted unit are also available to provide demonstrations for schools, civic clubs, and other community based programs. At these programs, the mounted officer will explain the duties of the officer on horseback as well as demonstrate the effectiveness of the horse in a law enforcement capacity. If you would like to stop by and visit the department and their equines, you can visit between 12-2pm M-F, or you can schedule a visit on Saturday or Sunday by calling 832-394-0372. in such rigorous conditions can be quite precarious and deserves our full respect. If you’ve ever ridden a horse or even attempted to ride, you know how difficult it is to get a 1500 lb. animal to maneuver where and how you want them to. Take that one step further and imagine trying to handle your stead in a crowd of people on a downtown street with traffic and various ground surfaces. Not easy! But Mounted Patrol has to take this scenario a step further yet again. As police officers, they do the same tasks as any other officer including traffic stops, searches, arrests and handcuffing…all from atop their horse! They can't just jump down, complete the task and hop back on their horse, lest they lose their leverage with the situation. Try staying on your horse when a “bad guy” is trying to pull you off. Now, that’s impressive! It's also important to consider the horses themselves. Barefoot and brave, these hooved heroes work 6 (or more) hour shifts to protect our citizens in ways that we might fail to appreciate. Along with their mounted officers, they deal with traffic, people coming at them from all directions, loud noises, tight spaces… all the things equines are innately fearful of. Yet, with the guidance of their human

It’s virtually care, equipment, training and other unheard of for a government agency to be cost-free to taxpayers. The department accomplishes this feat in several ways. First, the horses are donated by citizens. To be considered for the team, a horse must be even-tempered, healthy, trainable and exposed to various situations. The mares and geldings that are brought into the program go through a 90 day trial period before being accepted. The second way the department covers its cost is through sponsorship of the horses. Given that the Mounted Patrol often works downtown, there are just too many slippery surfaces that caused the horses to lose their footing when wearing steel shoes. Going barefoot has been a big success and the foot health and safety of the horses is better for it. As pendulums often swing one way then another, only to land in the middle, that’s the track the department’s philosophy of horse management has followed as well. as such, there is thousands of years of instinct telling them to always be on the highest of alert and when necessary, flee or fight. And believe me, that’s a decision they make very quickly so if they are startled, scared, see a strange object, hear a loud noise or anything out of sorts, they react. The horses on the police force essentially have to do the opposite–they are taught to stay calm in these situations and follow their officer’s lead. "Their training is meant to make them 'bomb proof' as they say, by desensitizing them to all sorts of noises, touch, moving objects and more", notes Officer Tyson Hufstedler. During out interview, the officers shared stories about the public and their love of the horses. From adults to children, most everyone wants to check them out, pet them and learn more. The department welcomes the attention, but they also want citizens to be mindful of safety. For example, they've had small children come and stand under their horse (which shows how large they are) without them knowing or being able to see underneath their horse. Another officer had to warn them not to move and of course they had to rely on the horse not to react. It's these type of situations that, although they do their utmost to handle, can be very dangerous. The message here: it's ok to approach and ask to pet the horses, but don't allow children behind or under the horse please! There is much to be respected about Houston’s Mounted Patrol, from the skill of the officers to their dedication and even their notable attainment of running the department on donations and sponsorships. But the real feat in my mind is the accomplishment of training and gaining the trust of a 1500 lb. animal whom they ask to do the opposite of their instinctual DNA. That mutual faith and knowledge of each other’s intent is only realized when time, respect, fairness, work ethic and dare I say love is present. Go ahead…be impressed…I am!

Health BATTLING Obesity Head To The Doggy Gym!

W

hen skipping on treats and cutting back on meal portions isn’t enough, exercise is one answer to help combat obesity. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, “an estimated 60% of cats and 56% of dogs in the US are overweight or obese”. Obesity can develop from a multitude of reasons from our challenges of exercising pets daily between our overlapping responsibilities, from spoiling ‘em with extra treats and snacks, and even from medical conditions including thyroid disease, arthritis, etc. Pappy, the “singing” Papillon, was enrolled at Wonder Pet Rehab & Recovery in the Fitness Paws Program on July 31st of this year. Even though days included a one-mile walk and a prescription weight management diet, he was obese. At 9 years old, Pappy had steadily put on weight which his owner notes hindered him on walks and could lead to other health concerns. The importance of “lightening the load” was shown in a 2002 Purina study, where dogs who were fed to remain in lean condition had a ~2 year (15%) increase in life span. Obesity, mirroring issues for us humans, leads to higher risks for disease and medical complications including increasing the

52

www.houstonpettalk.com

predisposition for diabetes, certain types of cancers, arthritis, etc. To help Pappy battle his bulk, he visits Wonder Pet three times per week for a 30-minute gym workout. Pappy enjoys the warmth and fun of the underwater treadmill to burn calories and soothe his muscles, then spends time on the dryland treadmill with our therapists at his side. The land treadmill inclines for added intensity in workout sessions. While training, though the goal is a super slim-down, Pappy is benefiting from cardiovascular conditioning, muscle strengthening and activities that are mentally stimulating as his “trainer” changes up his routine to keep it fun. Working out in a physical rehab center also provides an indoor opportunity to safely play, avoiding the humid, warm Houston weather as well as the risks of injury from being on a roadside stroll. Proudly, precious Pappy has already lost 2 pounds since joining Wonder Pet and his owner notes that “he

THE BENEFITS of Home Veterinary Care For Senior Cats

By: Dr. Cornelius lastwishes.com

I

did my first house call as a veterinarian fourteen years ago. It didn’t take long to realize patients I saw in their homes were more often at ease, inquisitive, and playful, but most importantly, themselves. This effect was even more obvious when it came to my feline patients, specifically senior-aged ones. What I learned is that cat lovers do not love having to take their cat to the vet if they can avoid it. Most cats don’t like carriers, pillow cases, or the car. Terrified cats can escape during transport, and they really aren’t fond of the noises they encounter along the way. So, Fluffy starts limping…but is it really getting bad enough to put her through the stress of the carrier, the car ride, and the glare of fluorescent lights? I’m afraid that more than some of the time Fluffy’s going to have to wait on treatment until it gets a little worse….and a little worse…. and well maybe she needs to stop eating first…then it’s obvious she’s really painful, right? Call someone earlier. Much earlier. We can see felines in their own environment, explain options for care in including household modifications and medical interventions, and learn through deeper conversations what our families are and are not capable of. A large portion of the time, diagnostics such as blood pressure, blood glucose, and a relaxed heart rate and rhythm in felines can be more accurately determined at home. We may be able to feel an abnormality sooner in a quiet, relaxed cat who allows us to palpate their abdomen, open their mouth, and to perform a range of joint motion examination. Acupuncture, massage, therapeutic laser and other complimentary treatments are now possible in the home. Unfortunately, many feline patients don’t receive their medications on a regular basis or at all after they are prescribed

54

www.houstonpettalk.com

because they are too difficult for the family to administer them. Monitoring compliance is as important as prescribing medications in the first place. Houston has veterinary compounding facilities that work with veterinarians in coming up with solutions for hard to medicate cats, so sometimes it takes a bit of time and effort to figure out what custom treatments work best for each patient and family. We as veterinary professionals recognize early intervention at the start of chronically painful conditions results in a better quality of life for our feline patients

and a much more satisfied family. The Houston community is very fortunate to have many dedicated veterinary professionals in all areas of care (mobile and stationary) for our feline friends. It never hurts to start a discussion with a mobile veterinarian in your area to determine who may be the perfect fit for your feline and your family. Many well-organized mobile professionals are skilled at overall case management, communication with other veterinarians on behalf of families, and are consistent with follow-through. All great news for our favorite felines!

ABUSED DOG Gus Battles Back How A Community Helped Save Him

By: Laura Noaker, vergi247.com

W

hen a photo appeared on social media of a strange looking dog, dirty, obviously injured and wandering around an old deserted apartment complex, nobody could have guessed that this stray would have emotionally affected so many people. The story began with rescue workers from Houston K-911 Rescue who saw an image of a stray dog on Facebook with an unusually large head and neck. They set out to find this suffering canine. After searching through some abandoned buildings, looking into a dark space and commenting on the horrible smell, the dog miraculously came wandering out. Once they were able to secure him, they realized that the deformity was caused by a shoelace tied tightly around his neck causing serious wounds that were cutting into his skin. The rescue group brought Gus to VERGI and X-rays revealed that the damage was greater than anyone could imagine. This poor pooch was also riddled with pellets that had been fired at him with a pellet gun as possible target practice. Gus was immediately given pain medication, antibiotics and fluids to help treat his injuries. His neck wounds, the worst that VERGI had ever seen, were carefully cleaned to prevent further damage. But he needed specialized attention so Gus was transferred to Texas A&M Hospital were he underwent surgery with a soft tissue specialist to get the deep scarring on his neck removed and the wounds further treated. After recognizing the expenses involved, a donation page was quickly set up to help defer the costs. Many people were anxious to jump in and help. As his surgeries and treatments continued, everyone was on pins and needles

56

www.houstonpettalk.com

over the success of the recovery process. Houston K-911 Rescue continued to give updates on Facebook. Gus kept social media humming for weeks as well as garnering attention from news stations and even national magazines. The amount of compassion that was shown for this poor little stray wandering the streets of Houston showed everyone how the Houston community can come together yet one more time. So what has Gus taught us? It could be the awareness of the dangers of rope, string or chains that are being placed on pets with the possibility of those pets being abandoned in the future. Maybe

it’s that pets are not targets to be used for shooting practice. But I believe the biggest lesson of all, is recognizing the importance of the people who give their time out on the streets helping strays like Gus. This is exactly the reason VERGI has created programs designed to help rescue groups when a situation arises. Today, Gus continues to make great improvement in his condition, the swelling has been greatly reduced and he will soon be healed completely. After being abused and wandering the streets, we are happy to say that finally Gus knows what love truly is.

Tail End THE WORLD of Essential Oils Healthy Living For Your Pets

T

he world of essential oils has a rich and fascinating history. There are records dating back to 4,000 B.C. describing the use of aromatic substances being used during religious rituals and for medicinal applications. These extensive ancient writings describe the use of barks, resins, spices and more being used in daily life. Egyptians are considered the masters in developing the use of essential oils for the embalming process. The Grand Vizier of King Djoser (2780-2720 B.C.), Imhotep, is credited with developing the use of essential oils, herbs and aromatic plants to support physical, emotional, spiritual and mental health and wellness. Hieroglyphics found on the walls of Egyptian temples depict the blending of essential oils and describe specific recipes used in those times. The bible contains over 200 references to aromatics, incense and ointments. Essential oils mentioned in the bible include Frankincense, Myrrh,

Sandalwood, Cassia, Galbanum, Cinnamon, Calamus, Spikenard, Rosemary and Hyssop. Like the Egyptian tombs, the bible also includes essential oil recipes. The most famous being the holy anointing oil. The Greeks and the Romans also enjoyed the extensive use of essential oils. For a period of time, the use of essential oils waned. Essential oils were re-introduced around the 19th and 20th

century. During WWI many military and civilian hospitals began using them. Since that time, many scientists have studied essential oils and their ability to support various systems in the body. Research has shown essential oils can support good health for your entire body. It has been shown that essential oils have the same benefits in animals. When introducing people to the world of essential oils the most important information we can give them is an understanding of quality and purity. This becomes even more important when using oils on young children and animals. Not all essential oils are equal. In fact, many essential oils are adulterated with synthetics and chemicals. A good example of this is Lavender oil. 10% of Lavender sold throughout the world comes from the plant and the other 90% is made in a laboratory. Knowing how your oils are produced is of utmost importance.

SEED Seeds must be selected for their proper genus, species and chemotype. A good example is different types of Frankincense trees such as, Boswellia Carteri , Boswellia Sacra and Boswellia Frereana to name a few. They are all

Frankincense trees but they contain different constituents. You need to know exactly what you are getting in that bottle of essential oils. Once the right seed is chosen, we must look at how the oils are cultivated. Cultivation is the way in which the plants are grown. Plants should be grown in soil that is free of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides or herbicides. The soil should be nourished with enzymes, minerals and organic mulch. The land and crops should be watered with clean spring water, free of chemicals such as chlorine and fluoride.

HARVESTING Harvesting the plants at the correct time is one of the most important factors in the production of high quality pure oils. Harvesting the oil at the wrong time of the

season or the wrong time of the day can produce and inferior oil. The last step in the seed harvesting process is proper distillation. Essential oils should always be steamed in distilled glass or stainless-steel chambers. Each type of plant must be distilled for a specific amount of time and at a specific temperature. Once the oils are distilled they are placed in dark brown or blue bottles. Oils should always be therapeutic grade. Although most essential oils are safe for general use, the potency of some oils can cause irritation and should not be used in specific situations.

TIPS FOR SAFE USE 1. Dilute with a carrier oil. Use of a carrier oil will not dilute the effects of the essential oil but will ensure that oils applied topically are not irritating or

overpowering. 2. Never use water if you experience irritation. If essential oils get in eyes or cause irritation to the skin, flush and dilute the area with a carrier oil to alleviate discomfort. 3. Don't apply essential oils to sensitive areas such as eyes, ears and mucous membranes. When choosing your essential oils please make sure you thoroughly investigate the company you are buying from. It is important to know where they get their oils from and whether they follow the proper harvesting process. DARE to be Different

Is This White Squirrel A Display Of Leucism?

E

very animal admitted to our wildlife center is special and every one gets great care but occasionally we get one that is just a little different and very rare. This happened recently when a white baby squirrel was admitted. We posted pictures on our Facebook page and I, like others, wondered if it was an albino. Because the squirrel has dark eyes it is most likely leucistic. Leucism is a partial loss of pigmentation but the eye color remains unaffected. Albinism is a congenital disorder and the eyes would appear pink or red. White squirrels are actually a mutation of the eastern gray squirrel. It is believed that white squirrels are the result of pet white squirrels that either escaped or were released into the wild. Brevard, North Carolina, seems to have the largest population of white squirrels and goes back to 1949 when a resident received a couple of them as gifts. They escaped and began breeding and now it’s estimated that one in three squirrels in Brevard are white. They have become a tourist attraction and are celebrated every year during the White Squirrel Festival. Another rarity is the black squirrel. Like the white squirrel, black squirrels

are actually eastern gray squirrels with a genetic condition called melanism. This condition can occur in many species. Regardless of the color, a squirrel is a squirrel is a squirrel and the color does not affect its behavior. Right now, squirrels are busy finding and storing food for the winter months. This behavior is called “caching.” One interesting study published by the Royal Society Open Science says that squirrels actually organize their nut stashes by quality, variety and maybe even preference. Some scientists call this “chunking.” The study's senior author, Lucia Jacobs, compared it to the way

we organize our groceries, "You might put fruit on one shelf and vegetables on another. Then, when you’re looking for an onion, you only have to look in one place, not every shelf in the kitchen.” In order to avoid predators, squirrels will zigzag back and forth. I think we’ve all seen squirrels trying to cross a street. Instead of running a straight line to safety, they will zigzag and the result often leads to an unhappy ending for the squirrel. A squirrel’s tail not only serves as a blanket in the cold days of winter but is also used as a way to communicate. It can warn other squirrels of danger, is used to help with balance and climbing and is also used during the mating season to attract potential mates. Gray, brown, black or white, we love them and are fortunate to be able to care for fox squirrels, eastern gray squirrels and flying squirrels. Revealed RESCUE

DACHSHUND RESCUE OF HOUSTON (DROH)

Dachshund Rescue of Houston has been around for almost 20 years, which makes them the oldest running Dachshund Rescue in Houston. An entirely volunteer based 501(c)(3) organization, the rescue's sole purpose is to bring the breed they love, Dachshunds, together with loving families. Thanks to their foster network, they are able to rescue and re-home dogs by allowing their rescues to decompress in safe, caring homes. Every DRoH dog is vetted prior to landing in a foster home, which allows them the first step into a new healthy life. Like all rescue organizations, donations are essential. See the Event Calendar on page 19 for DRoH's annual Halloween fundraiser.

EDNA MODE Edna is a sweet girl who loves to nap, roll around in the grass, and eat! She came to DROH under sad circumstances through no fault of her own. She was neglected and rejected by her owner. She is considered a miniature size and a senior age, but don't be fooled, she has plenty of spunk!

GILBERT HUPH Gilly is a bit larger dachshund at 19 lbs. At 8 years old he has soulful eyes that make him look sad, but he's a happy-go-lucky guy. He likes dogs and humans, and is a smart boy, excellent listener and an easily trained dog. His perfect match will be someone who loves affection and cuddling, which goes along with his favorite pastime of getting his belly rubbed. If you are interested in adoption, please visit www.DRoH.org.

Each issue, we highlight a local 501(c)3 animal charity in hopes that our readers will find their true love with one of these rescue groups! Charities are chosen from PetTalk GoFetch, our pet directory website and free mobile App, www. pettalkgofetch.com. To be listed as a rescue group, please email info@houstonpettalk.com.

CONSERVATION Corner BLACK BEARS IN TEXAS

H

ome renovations for the Houston Zoo’s two North American black bears are now complete! The Hamill Foundation Black Bear Exhibit is the first project to be completed in the zoo’s Keeping Our World Wild centennial capital campaign thanks to generous

As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo or other local organizers such as the TWRC Wildlife Center. This issue, we are highlighting American Black Bears. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.

Houstonians. This expansion more than triples the space for five-year-old black bears, Belle and Willow, to explore. The expanded habitat was designed to give the bears the highest quality of life and includes engaging features throughout like a revamped water feature equipped with a chiller to keep the water

a bear-friendly 75 degrees, specially created climbing structures, and ample shade for both the bears and visitors. Guests will be able to experience the world of bears and get nose-to-nose with them through a brandnew glass wall.

PROTECTING BLACK BEARS IN TEXAS While the top level of care is provided for the black bears at the Houston Zoo, it is important to reflect this same level of attention to black bears in the wild. North American black bears are one of the most widely distributed bear species in the world. In fact, black bears are Texas natives. But with so many people living in the state made it challenging

for the bears, and they disappeared. That’s changing. Black bears are moving back into Texas, and this gradual increase can be attributed to local organizations and communities coming together to protect these animals and their natural homes. The Houston Zoo saves bears in the wild by participating in state protection planning in Texas. The team also leads efforts to help save bears in the wild through promotion of paper reduction and the use of recycled paper products, like toilet paper. Did you know that the Houston Zoo only uses toilet paper made from recycled content in both public and behind-the-scenes areas? Bears need trees to live, and by using less paper

or recycled-content paper products, fewer trees are cut down!

BELLE AND WILLOW Belle and Willow came to the Houston Zoo in 2013 from California where they were being fed by patrons of a restaurant and appeared to be orphaned. Since they were acclimated to people, they unfortunately could not be relocated. Therefore, US Fish and Wildlife rescued them and asked the Houston Zoo if it could offer them a home, and they moved to Texas shortly after. Belle is often seen playing in the pool and roughhousing with Willow. She is the larger of the two and tends to prefer naps. Willow is the mastermind behind

the brawn of Belle. She is smaller and seems to like engaging with her enrichment. You can often see her working through a puzzle feeder. Black bears are naturally omnivorous. Belle and Willow’s favorite foods are honey,

peanut butter, and nuts. Guests can see the beloved duo playing and swimming in the pools of their newly renovated home. Every visit to see Belle and Willow helps save black bears in the wild.
