Originally released as a mix for Dummy Magazine in summer 2012, it is technically an original, 20-minute composition in four seamlessly arranged parts and was inspired by the artist’s research into the eponymous Soviet signal transmitter - the ‘Duga - 3’. The transmitter was characterised by the repetitive tapping sound it broadcast which was sufficiently powerful enough to intercept transmissions across the world. And, in truly Conet Project style, the array was abandoned as mysteriously and unexpectedly as it had appeared, leaving behind a legacy of intrigue and enigma that sparked the dilated curiosity of young Joshua Leary aka Evian Christ.

Brief ‘We’re gonna be releasing a limited edition 12 of a mix Evian Christ made last year called Duga-3... We were discussing artwork concepts and Josh wondered if there was any way you could graphically represent the 10hz tapping sound that makes up the Duga-3 transmission? Important to mention right now is that we don’t have a lot of time to do this, as this release is intended for the Record Store Day and they have super tight deadlines, so we need this by the end of today?’

Duga 3 Starting in 1976 a new and powerful radio signal was detected worldwide, and quickly dubbed the Woodpecker by amateur radio operators. Transmission power on some woodpecker transmitters was estimated to be as high as 10 MW EIRP. As well as disrupting short-wave amateur radio and broadcasting it could sometimes be heard over telephone circuits due to the strength of the signals.

Imagery Record sleeves come in a whole range of aesthetics varying from just simple typography to full bleed imagery or somewhere in between the two. The design of Duga 3 record should represent the short-wave radio bands, although they’re invisible to the naked eye a photographic element will work best in this situation as visual representation via typography may lose it’s quality.

Concept The concept behind the record sleeve is simple; the image of Duga 3 is manipulated through scanning and manually glitching the image by hand gibing the effect that resembles the short-wave radio bands. The darkness and heavy contrast of the image reflects the cold bleakness of the Soviet Union around the time the systems were deployed.

Duga 3 was a Soviet over the horizon radar system nicknamed the ‘Russian Woodpecker’ because of the shortwave radio bands sounding like a sharp, repetitive tapping noise at 10 Hz.

Previous Artwork The original artwork for previous singles and albums are visually stimulating as if they are a visual representation of the suns surface bubbling. The colours are vibrant throughout and represent the sound of the band well.

Visuals Running with the aesthetic they currently use I developed it further and tried to visually represent the description of their latest album ‘The band split the two sides of their record between sour and sweet, with the aggressive first half being followed by the second side’s pretty comedown.’ The use of colour partnered with smoke represents aggression but the softness of the ‘pretty comedown’
