GENEVIEVE MCNEILL AND ARCO360 PIRATA DE SUSAETA

Level of competition: Medium Tour

HQ: Please provide a brief description of your riding career up to this point.

GM: I had a wonderful Trakehner, Saint John, that I backed and started dressage with. We headed up through the grades and ended up competing at Grand Prix; he had a heart of gold. I had always loved the Andalusian breed, so I sold another Warmblood I had produced to Advanced level to buy Pirate as a three-year-old from Spain. He has been the most amazing horse to train; we have fun, which is what it’s all about. I have a younger Andalusian who is at Medium level, so I have the two Spanish boys that I am producing now.

HQ: What are your ambitions for your horse going forward?

GM: To compete at Grand Prix, hopefully next year.

HQ: Does your horse have a favourite treat?

GM: He loves bananas and carrots!

HQ: Give us a fact about your horse that our readers might find interesting.

GM: He just loves people. He will always nicker every night when I pop in to say good night. He nickers

even before I enter the stables. He knows the sound of my walk. I tell myself the nicker is for me, but it’s probably the little treat I bring with me for him and his Spanish brother Llapis…

NEENA DE KLERK AND CALLAHO LARANO

Level of competition: Novice

Breeding: Larison/Sandreo

Coaches: Marianne Conlynne

Groom: Gibson

Horse’s nickname: Larano

HQ: How long have you owned your horse?

NK: Four years.

HQ: Please provide a brief description of your riding career up to this point.

NK: My riding career started with SANESA, which meant I rode in every discipline. However, a large part of my background is in dressage, and I believe it is a fundamental part of riding. I took a step back from competition when I went to study law, but I never stopped riding, especially dressage. Much of my riding now is focused on training youngsters, which is a passion of mine.

HQ: What are your ambitions for your horse going forward?

NK: This is Larano’s first proper year of dressage competitions. The reason for this is that he had a colic op, which set us back an entire year. Next year, we are aiming for Elementary, and once perfected, we will move up. Larano also competes in jumping; we are currently jumping 1.10m. His dressage is extremely important for his jumping career as well. He is so special.

HQ: Does your horse have a favourite treat?

NK: Carrots

HQ: Give us a fact about your horse that our readers might find interesting.

NK: I used to have his half-brother

Callaho Landreo (same mom); however, during COVID, he had a paddock accident, and, unfortunately, we had to put him down. I was devastated; he was my heart horse. The Callaho Auction was happening during

this time, and there was Larano. I never tried him out; I only had his video and picture. I decided I wanted a piece of Landreo and gave him a chance. I am incredibly grateful I did. Larano is one of a kind and has given me so much.

HQ: What are your ambitions for your horse going forward?

JK: To get through Champs with a smile! I would like to ride Advanced one day.

HQ: Does your horse have a favourite treat?

JK: Hay pellets.

SF: I hope to produce Damon to ride in the Grand Prix one day; he is extremely talented and shows much potential to go far.

HQ: Does your horse have a favourite treat?

SF: Carrots and apples

HQ: Give us a fact about your horse that our readers might find interesting.

SF: Damon’s sire, Dreamline, is from Blu Horse in Denmark, so he has some Danish blood in him, and Dreamline has Jazz blood in him from his sire’s side, so this is believed to be where his electric nature comes from.

HQ: Is there anything else you wish to add?

SF: Damon has been in the country for one year now, and I started riding him about six months ago. Although Damon is very sharp and skittish, he is starting to trust me more each day.

Coaches: Siobhan Records for dressage and Carl Boonzaaier for showjumping

DE: I bred him. We bought the semen off the auction (the last time they sold it) and leased the mare from Govett Triggol.

HQ: Please provide a brief description of your riding career up to this point.

DE: My main focus is showjumping, but Liberace and I fell last July in our first 1.50m GP, so I have been doing some dressage to get him strong and fit.

HQ: What are your ambitions for your horse going forward?

DE: I’d love to get him to Medium, and obviously, our main goal would be to get him up to the 1.50m classes.

HQ: Does your horse have a favourite treat?

DE: Oh, anything! He would probably eat a lemon before he realised what it was. He inhales his treats.

HQ: Give us a fact about your horse that our readers might find interesting.

DE: I always said he’s my ‘misunderstood child’. He comes across as grumpy in his stable and paddock, but he’s actually a sweetie.

DR: Ten months

HQ: Please provide a brief description of your riding career up to this point.

DR: I rode lower levels for about 20 years while life, studies and work took priority. About two years ago, I decided that I could finally put my riding first, so I started riding with Karen Keller. Unfortunately, my mare couldn’t go any further up the grades due to an old injury, so in November 2023, we bought Bug, graded Grand Prix at that stage, as a schoolmaster for me, and he’s been teaching me patiently ever since.

HQ: What are your ambitions for your horse going forward?

DR: We would love to ride Grand Prix within the next two years.

HQ: Does your horse have a favourite treat?

DR: Top Red apples

HQ: Give us a fact about your horse that our readers might find interesting.

DR: He will turn his bum to you in the stable for scratches.

RB: To get as far as we can go in all three disciplines while having FUN before I get too old or scared to jump anymore, then I will focus more on the dressage.

HQ: Does your horse have a favourite treat?

RB: Inga loves horse biscuits; she will do almost anything for a bicci.

HQ: Give us a fact about your horse that our readers might find interesting.

RB: Inga is very opinionated; she told the animal communicator that she could see a stride better than I can

(which is true, by the way), and she likes doing the dancing thing because I laugh a lot while we are doing it.

HQ: Is there anything else you wish to add?

RB: I am having the best time with my horse of a lifetime

DEBBIE RANGOUSIS AND

WÖHLSTAND IRRESISTIBLE

Level of competition: Medium

Breeding: He is by Wöhlstand Icon out of Wöhlstand Lucy Lin

DR: Three years.

HQ: Please provide a brief description of your riding career up to this point.

DR: I have represented Gauteng twice on two different horses for showing, and this is the third horse I’ve schooled to Medium. I still have so much learning to do, but I love every second of this journey.

HQ: What are your ambitions for your horse going forward?

DR: I would love to compete Dutch in Prix St George. I wholeheartedly believe that with time and careful training, we can get there together.

HQ: Does your horse have a favourite treat?

DR: Red apples! He gets one before every ride, followed by a stack of carrots. He looks so good because he eats so good!

HQ: Give us a fact about your horse that our readers might find interesting.

DR: Dutchy is only seven. He has the biggest love for dressage; he loves the limelight and hates sharing the warmup arena with others. He also adores galloping. He is really FAST, and his tail whizzes around for extra speed! His favourite trick in every lap of honour

I’ve ever ridden is to try to buck me off. My grooms call him The Gangster. He is bossy, very playful and has no concept of personal space. He loves fiercely; he does not like me riding anyone else and doesn’t like any other horses except Captain Oak getting a cuddle from me. Quite simply, he is lovely, until he isn’t and then

you better hold on for dear life!

HQ: Is there anything else you wish to add?

DR: He is very proud of his work, and when my daughter rides him, he likes to show her his big boy stuff - especially his extended trot and gallop. He believes collection is for babies!

ROBYN RAMSAY AND RIEGERS

BLACK JACK

Breeding: I am sure he is somehow related to Bart Simpson – he is always up to something! He is a very lucky find; his bloodlines are unknown.

Coach: Karen Keller

Grooms: William and Sam Horse’s nickname: Blue

HQ: How long have you owned your horse?

WM: Blue is owned by Sharon Meyrick, and I've been riding her since 2023. I was looking for a safe horse to ride after suffering from a deep vein thrombosis, and she was recommended to me. She's become so much more than that, though. She absolutely loves dressage. Her owner and I share her, so she's lucky to get double the love.

HQ: Please provide a brief description of your riding career up to this point. WM: I have been riding since I was five years old but never owned my own horse until I was an adult. I've ridden to Advanced on a horse called Conan. I've also ridden a few other horses and done quite well. I'm passionate about dressage and how beautiful and strong it makes every horse who is trained correctly.

HQ: What are your ambitions for your horse going forward?

WM: She is incredibly intelligent and learns very quickly, so we'll see how far she goes. I dream of riding her in Small Tour, but we'll see!

HQ: Does your horse have a favourite treat?

WM: Blue loves carrots but has never said no to anything we've offered her.

HQ: Is there anything else you wish to add?

WM: I hadn't ridden a Thoroughbred in a long time, and I've loved my journey with Blue. She's by far the easiest horse to

school that I've ridden, and she has a great mind. I absolutely love working with her; she has a great work ethic and tries so hard. I'm very grateful that Sharon shares this lovely girl with me.

Coaches: Calet de Vos (local) and Jenny Veenstra (international)

Horse’s nickname: Llapis, in English, means pencil. I even checked when I bought him: “Did you really call him Pencil?” They said, “Yes, because he’s a good student,” so his nickname is Pencil.

HQ: How long have you owned your horse?

GM: Since he was three years old, and he’s now eight years old.

HQ: Please provide a brief description of your riding career up to this point.

GM: I have competed at Grand Prix with my Trakehner, Saint John, who I backed and we went up through the grades together. I then imported my first Andalusian, Pirata de Susaeta, as a three-year-old. He is now in Medium Tour, and Llapis is my youngster, who is following Pirata up the grades. GM: When he was being imported from Spain, he travelled up to Holland to quarantine to come to SA, and then the world closed down due to COVID, so he spent an extra five months in Holland (lazing in the sunshine) waiting for planes to fly again until he could eventually fly out to SA.

HQ: How long have you owned your horse?

CH: Five years.

HQ: Please provide a brief description of your riding career up to this point.

CH: I have been riding since I was five. I was taught by British Horse Society instructors who focused on management and care before riding and instilled strong, correct basics. I always had young horses that I produced and sold before any level higher than Novice, but Pandora is staying. She is feisty and opinionated, just like me, and it's taken a few years to understand each other. It's a dream come true to ride at a competition like this and be in the team.

Coach: Adriaan van Wyk

Groom: Maxwell

Horse’s nickname: Flori

HQ: How long have you owned your horse?

SN: Twelve years.

HQ: Please provide a brief description of your riding career up to this point. SN: I sat on my first horse bareback with no bridle at the age of five, and I was sold; every day since then, my life has revolved around horses. In my early thirties, I heard about a lovely oneyear-old Warmblood mare for sale at Compton House Stud who had excellent bloodlines. I loved her, and within 10 minutes of viewing her, I was sure she was for me. I have owned Floresanna for 12 years. Her initial training was inconsistent as motherhood was demanding and seldom allowed me free time to go to the stables. It was only later in life, when I moved to new stables and met some truly wonderful, passionate, and knowledgeable dressage riders and horse lovers that I felt I could make something out of our union. Adriaan Van Wyk has also played a key role in our development as our primary dressage trainer. She is sensitive to ride, calm, intelligent and

sensible. She is truly a lovely soul, and I'm very blessed to have found her.

At 13 in 2017, I had major spinal surgery and had to relearn how to ride after recovery and rehab. The first time I heard about para-dressage properly was in 2019 when I started riding a pony called Galaxy, owned by Jessica Turner. This is when my competitive career really began! Galaxy took me to my first SA Champs at KPC in 2021. I since competed at SA Champs in 2022, so this is my third time competing at this show.

AM: If para is allowed, I would love to compete at an International this year. I am having spinal surgery in November, so this would definitely be a dream to accomplish before I’m not able to compete for a long time. Otherwise, cracking 70% before the year ends would be fantastic!! Long term, my dream is to compete at the Paralympics.

HQ: Does your horse have a favourite treat?

AM: Tosh cannot resist a Likit Treat Bar or Likit Snaks. I have very luckily been sponsored by Likit for three years now, so Tosh has an endless supply.

AM: Tosh’s favourite thing in the world is a flying change. If you point him down a diagonal at a canter, he is too eager to launch himself into a series of tempi changes in pure excitement. Before my spinal surgery, my goal is to just do a single flying change!! Tosh is 24 and schooled up to Advanced, though he is very happy to be a slow and chilled schoolmaster for me.

HQ: Is there anything else you wish to add?

HQ: What are your ambitions for your horse going forward?

HQ: Give us a fact about your horse that our readers might find interesting.

AM: KPC has sponsored my entry fees and membership for three years now and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to be able to compete at shows like these. With a brilliant team of brands and people behind me, the sky is the limit!

SHELBY DOS SANTOS AND LOCARNO HIP HOP

Level of competition: Preliminary

Breeding: Sired by Locarno Challenger, dam is Locarno High Note, and sire of dam is Locarno Caprivi

Coach: Maxine de Villiers

Groom: Wisdom Horse’s nickname: Poppy or Pops

HQ: How long have you owned your horse?

SS: Two years

HQ: Please provide a brief description of your riding career up to this point.

SS: I have been riding for eight years and much of my experience was gained from riding inexperienced horses. I am a multidisciplinary rider having ridden in showjumping, dressage, eventing and a bit of showing. I have always had a love for dressage. My first extensive dressage training was when I was stabled at Bekker Equestrian in Pretoria. I later bought Hip Hop, after having moved to stables in the Kyalami area. Within the past year since, I have stabled at Maxim’s Equestrian, Hip Hop and I have flourished under Maxine’s guidance.

HQ: What are your ambitions for your horse going forward?

SS: Going forward, I plan to train Hip Hop up the grades in both dressage and showjumping.

HQ: Does your horse have a favourite treat?

SS: Biscuits.

HQ: Give us a fact about your horse that our readers might find interesting.

SS: My first show with her was an eventing show, at which I discovered Hip Hop was scared of other horses in the warm-up ring. It probably stems from herd mentality, but she still spooks very often in the warmup arena.

HQ: Is there anything else you wish to add?

SS: Hip Hop can be very sassy under saddle, but she has a heart of gold.

LYNN BREMNER-CLARKE AND BON ESPRIT

Level of competition: Small Tour

Team: Gauteng

Breeding: By Bonheur out of a TB mare

Coach: I ride when l can with various coaches, but no single consistent coach.

Groom: Abraham Chakwira

Horse’s nickname: Spritzi

HQ: How long have you owned your horse?

LB: Since he was four years old. I backed him myself. He is now 17.

HQ: Please provide a brief description of your riding career up to this point.

LB: I first rode at an interprovincial level in 1996. I rode for Western Province on three different horses. I returned to Gauteng in 2005 and rode for the team in the following year. Being a single mom at that time, my riding became more limited due to financial restraints. After 2020, l suffered a long spell with COVID and some foot surgery. This year l was only too delighted to be able to start competing again, and l am delighted with Esprit's joy at being out again. We are both well and looking forward to Medium Tour next.

HQ: What are your ambitions for your horse going forward?

LB: Nothing short of Grand Prix.

HQ: Does your horse have a favourite treat?

LB: Everything!

HQ: Give us a fact about your horse that our readers might find interesting.

LB: As a young horse he was quick with his teeth and heels, and it was not very safe to just walk into his paddock or stable. He was also very reluctant about accepting a rider and even learning. Now, he loves his work. In fact he became quite sickly and grumpy when l could not ride these last few years.

HQ: Is there anything else you wish to add?

LB: My little orange horse makes my heart smile. He is not well conformed, and certainly no dressage rider would pick him out of a field as a dressage horse, but he is brave, clever, and has the guts to keep trying even when the job is harder for him than it is for the classically bred horse. I respect and admire that.

Eighteen months later, I got a phone call from Mike saying he’d send him up the following week so I could back him. The original plan was to sell him, but after looking at a video of him cantering, I bought him.

SR: It’s wonderful to see so many horses in the Big Tour classes at this show that have been produced up the grades by their riders.

NICHOLA MOHR AND CALLAHO WINSTON – OUR NEW SOUTH AFRICAN CHAMPIONS!

Level of competition: Big Tour

Breeding: He’s a Warmblood by Wenckstern out of a mare by Idocus

Coaches: Linda Mohr and Carsten Peters

Grooms: Bonga and Liefe take great care of our Mr Winston Horse’s nickname: Winnie

HQ: How long have you owned your horse?

NM: We bought him from the Callaho Auction in 2013 and I've had him for 11 years.

HQ: Please provide a brief description of your riding career up to this point.

NM: There were a lot of tears for the first few years; Winston was always such a tense young horse. There were many championship shows we had to skip because he wouldn't settle and relax in his work. It took me a long time to get Winston confident and strong for his piaffe and passage work; he used to stress so much with it. Our most difficult movement to learn in the Grand Prix was the canter zigzag. I think what's helped him relax is spending his days in a grass paddock with his friends.

HQ: What are your ambitions for your horse going forward?

NM: To enjoy every ride with him and keep him happy and enjoying his work.

HQ: Does your horse have a favourite treat?

NM: He loves carrots, sugar cubes and apples. Winston also loves scratches!

HQ: Give us a fact about your horse that our readers might find interesting.

NM: Winston isn't like your usual gelding; he doesn't like being told what to do; you have to ask nicely.

NM: I started working with him in the middle of 2020.

HQ: Please provide a brief description of your riding career up to this point.

NM: He was given to us in 2020, and my mom told me that I could start riding him to sell. I thought that was a good idea because I wanted an iPad, and I could use his money to buy one. Well, it turns out I'd rather keep the horse! I still don't have that iPad, but I really love this little horse. I can't believe how far he's come in such a short amount of time; he was originally a trick pony!

HQ: What are your ambitions for your horse going forward?

NM: I would love to be able to ride the Grand Prix with him one day It will be such great experience.

HQ: Does your horse have a favourite treat?

NM: He loves his carrots and cookies.

NM: Sisley only has one eye and he's a trick pony; he loves to show everyone how well he lies down.

WIUM VAN HUYSSTEEN AND KALVIN FÂN STALL

BELLEFLEUR (STER SPORT ELITE AA)

(JACOBUS IS HIS SPORT REGISTERED NAME)

Level of competition: Medium Tour

Breeding: Sire: Tsjalle 454. Dam: Ilse van Sweins

Coach: Have been training on my own for years but recently started training with John Smith.

Groom: Sacharia (Sac)

Horse’s nickname: Koosie van Heidelberg/Koos

HQ: How long have you owned your horse?

WH: The owners are Henriet and Gawie Stoltz. My very first ride on Kalvin was on the 14th of January 2022. Kalvin was graded in Elementary Medium then. I have always had this secret little crush on him, and I have to say he has been a true gentleman since day one.

HQ: Please provide a brief description of your riding career up to this point.

WH: I started riding at the age of 11, and I’m 36 now. I was really a young boy who just loved horses. At age 22, I got the opportunity to work at Adelprag Friesian Stud, where I did mostly backing of young horses. I didn’t really know much about dressage but the owner Nickie Pienaar gave me so many amazing opportunities. I worked my way up the grades with many horses until we got to the Big Tour. The first Big Tour horse I trained was Menno, and after that, I rode Watch Me (both Friesian stallions). Then, my riding world changed when I started riding FirnHill Derry.

Then, at the end of 2021, I decided to take a leap and go dancing on my own. I took some training horses in and started teaching. I have always had a great desire to be on the ground with people and make riding fun. I have not looked back for one second. In 2022, the owner of Henson Friesian Stud asked me to train some of their horses. At first, it was only Koos, but now I have so many beautiful ‘black pearls’ that I am training for the Stud and also have other private clients who are based at Henson Stud, as well as my own clients.

HQ: What are your ambitions for your horse going forward?

WH: Myself and Koos are working our way to Grand Prix. We did our very first Grand Prix test at Gauteng Championship this year, and Koos took it all in his stride.

HQ: Does your horse have a favourite treat?

WH: Carrots.

HQ: Give us a fact about your horse that our readers might find interesting. WH: Koos was imported from Holland as a three-year-old. He received his Predicate as a stallion with breeding permission for SA from the KFPS at the age of three.

HQ: Is there anything else you wish to share?

WH: It is truly an honour and a privilege for me to be riding this 17hh Friesian stallion. I absolutely adore him. I have never worked with such a gentle, kind soul like this in my life. I am extremely grateful to the owners Henriet and Gawie for allowing me to have Koosie as my absolutely breathtaking, most amazing, loving dance partner.

BUILDING THE HYPE

THE TOYOTA SOUTH AFRICAN DERBY 2024

If there is one title most showjumpers dream of one day claiming, it is that of the South African Derby. The South Africa Derby has been running since 1965 and is considered one of the three biggest showjumping derbies in the world, alongside the British Hickstead Derby and the German Hamburg Derby.

A Derby is the ultimate test of a horse and rider’s bravery, stamina, and carefulness and it is, without a doubt, one of the greatest highlights for spectators on the showjumping calendar. It is also the final leg of the famed ‘Triple Crown’, and this year, with Toyota as sponsor, the winner of the ‘Toyota Triple Crown’ series will be taking home a Toyota Crown of their very own.

HQ’S HUNCHES

We expect (based on our best knowledge and the entry list) that a handful of past Derby-winning riders will be fighting it out for the Toyota SA Derby title this year, two of which will be riding horses that they have won Derby on before!

The first of these is Ronnie Healy, who will be jumping Gillian van Orshof, with whom he won last year, as well as Cornet’s Mandarino, the current leader in the Toyota Triple Crown Series.

The second is Dominey Alexander, who was the 2022 Derby winner on Athena VI. Dominey and Athena were third last year, and they will likely be giving it a go again, as he saves her for this event and only jumps her at a handful of other shows throughout the year. Dominey also has his other World Cup horses, Capital Kollier and S’Oakley, entered in the show, so he may have two rides in the Big Derby!

FAST FACT

• Hickstead Derby was first held in 1961. The track is 1195m in length and has 16 obstacles and 23 efforts.

• Hamburg Derby was first held in the 1920s. It covers 1250m and has 17 obstacles and 26 efforts.

• The SA Derby was first held in 1965. It has 18 obstacles and 23 efforts.

Nicole Horwood is a Derby expert, having won three back-to-back derbies on the Legendary Capital Don Cumarco from 2012-2014 before winning AGAIN in 2016! Nicole will be jumping ANOTHER Capital stallion, Capital Impossible, around the Toyota SA Derby this year. It will be Impossible’s first-ever Big Derby, but he placed second in the 1.40m Derby last year after jumping double clear, so the odds look good!

Nicola Sime-Riley is also a past derby winner on Elpaso in 2017. She has her two young Rivendell stallions entered in the big class: Lamborghini and Quintessence. They jumped around the Mini and Micro Derby, respectively, in 2022, so she is certainly one to keep an eye on.

Jeanne Körber hasn’t had a derby win YET, but she has always been close. Callaho Lexington LOVES Derby and Pretty Woman M certainly has the potential to be a second derby ride for Jeanne!

Lisa Williams is also a past Derby winner, winning in 2008 on Warrangal P and then again in 2021 on Campbell. She will surely be jumping Pilgrim, who jumped the Big Derby last year with Jonathan Clark and came tied third!

YOUNG RIDERS

We hope to see Kiara Burn jump Callaho Lindor around their first Big Derby after winning the 1.40m Mini Derby last year.

derby winner! She won in 1987 and 1990 on Bye & Bye and then again in 2005 on Lindenburg. She will be riding her very brave and scopey Equifox Casino and definitely hoping to win her fourth title.

van Rijckevorsel, who has already jumped the Big Derby a few times on his trusty now 20-year-old mare, Gledsmuir’s Red Ivory, and may well take his SA Championship-winning mare Capital My Lady around her first Big Derby after she had one down in the 1.40m Derby last year… Time will tell!

1.40m Derby in 2023.

• Carl Boonzaaier and Callaho Luc du Ayenne in their second Big Derby outing.
• AJ Radermacher and Ebb and Flow Count Capri.

TEXT: HANNAH BOTHA

Ronnie Healy’s compelling Derby win aboard Gillian van Orshof in 2023 and his epic form in 2024 make him a surefire favourite to seize the 2024 Toyota South African Derby title. HQ caught up with him to learn more about his preparation and how he’s feeling ahead of the big day.

HQ: Last year, you showed us that you are the master of Derby prep. What are your secrets, how do you prepare your horses for Derby, and how does that differ from prep for other shows?

RH: The main differences between this show and regular shows are the different obstacles in the form of

the Derby elements and the fitness required. The horse and rider need to be fitter than usual, and, obviously, you need a horse that is good on grass. I've always loved Derby, and I think you either love it or hate it, but you definitely need the right horse for these classes; if you have the right horse, it’s much easier to enjoy them.

HQ: Is there any particular work that you do that may be different in the weeks leading up to Derby?

RH: I certainly do more track and cardio work with the horses. It’s hard to balance getting them fit enough but not so fit that they are crazy fresh and unrideable. The jumping side of the preparation is quite normal. I keep them ticking over with small jumps, but they are in the season, so they know what they are doing by now. After taking some of my Junior clients to the Youth Festival, I went to Bryce (McCall). At Bryce’s yard, we just do some small, easy little practice on the grass and get them blowing a little. Then, on the Saturday before Derby, Gonda will be up to do our final Derby prep, so that's what we will do leading up to the event.

HQ: You've had a remarkable 12 months either on the podium or very, very close; to what do you attribute that consistency?

RH: So, my dad has always called me the ‘nearly man’, and I’ve luckily been relatively consistent at the top. The biggest thing that changed recently and, I believe, led to more wins is my mentality around winning. For some time, I was trying to find the perfect round, but I think as a rider, you always find flaws in your rounds, so knowing there is no such thing as perfect really helped. It took time and experience to understand that perfection doesn’t exist and change my mentality around it. This

has changed my way of thinking about things. At the end of the day, I think the most important thing when you look back is the titles, not the rounds. Gonda has also been fantastic in helping create this shift in my mindset. She's quite incredible with her attention to detail and it works well for me.

Also, I must say that having kids has weirdly taken the pressure off whether I do well or not. When I come out, they will love me anyway, and they motivate me to do well. Having the support of Ash and the boys in my corner helps me to be more successful.

HQ: After your sensational outdoor Grand Prix win and your second place in the SA Champs, you're the favourite to win the Triple Crown series. What would that victory mean to you, and have you enjoyed the series?

RH: The Triple Crown is a really nice bonus for the year! It’s an incredible thing Toyota has done, and we, as riders, are grateful to have the opportunity.

Before all this happened and Toyota came on board, however, I wrote down my goals as I do at the beginning of every year, and my goal was to aim for the same as Nicole Horwood. Nicole is the only one to win the Triple Crown, i.e., the Outdoor Grand Prix, the SA Champs, and the Derby on the same horse in the same year, so it was a massive goal for me. Coming second now at SA Champs has put me out of it to win the three in the same year. I've never won SA Champs, but over the last three years, I’ve been second, third and second, so I can't complain. Hopefully, I'll get it over the line one day and win it, but winning the Triple Crown would be amazing now on the points system. Hopefully, we can have a good Derby, and it will be the cherry on the top to win the Toyota Triple Crown.

My goal now and my whole focus is to be as high up in the placings at Derby as possible. Obviously, my goal is to win, but we’ll have to wait and see. I've got a taste of winning Derby, and it's a really nice taste, sweeter than all the other ones, and it was definitely a highlight of my

HQ: Tell us about your string of horses and your goals with each of them.

RH: My string is probably the best string I've ever had in terms of top-level horses with the big three – Goofy, Cornetto and Capital Magic Boy. I've also got really good young ones coming up. There will be a little gap, but I'll hopefully plug it with a few horses coming through.

Magic had an inguinal hernia at the beginning of the year, and Cornetto had a small colic surgery last year; those have taken some time to recover from, but it is actually not the worst thing, as sometimes just giving them that time off is helpful. Luckily, I had a team of horses to continue with, and I could take time to bring those ones back.

Magic really stepped up last year, then I threw away the Outdoor Grand Prix with time faults, and I let him down, so I swore that I would never do that again. Goofy has been the mainstay and has been incredible. He was consistently on almost every podium last year; once I got to grips with how to ride him, I haven't been out of the prizes. He's been incredible. Conetto has been sensational this year; he's won the

Outdoor Grand Prix, won the first World Cup, came fifth in the second World Cup, and is now second at SA Champs, so he's been incredible. I’m excited to see where we go with him and Goofy and what they can do for Derby. They're both in contention for the Triple Crown, but Cornetto is leading. Tam Rueda and Liantos are in second but won’t do Derby, and then Goofy is third, so we're right up there. Fingers crossed, we can come through.

HQ : Between running so many businesses and raising a young family, how do you find the time to ride? What does a day in your life look like for you?

RH: Life is busy. Ash and I have the two yards, one in Kyalami, one in Blair Atholl, and the feed company HH Feeds. It is just really all about having the right people in charge. Kyalami is probably the biggest one of the three, so I try to be there the

most, and then I have an excellent team at Blair Atholl with Hannah Botha, who so wonderfully looks after the nutritional and general management side of things, and Jess (Kamffer) who is in charge of coaching; she is just incredible. I also have Sonya and Cayleigh at HH Feeds, who help manage the feed side of the company and keep all our loyal clients happy. They are really good at what they do, so yeah, I think the secret of

a successful business is having good people around you who you can delegate to and be happy to delegate to.

In terms of the house and kids, Ash runs it all as well as her own business, so everything on that side is owed to Ash, and I sit there and, you know, look pretty. In summary, Ash is the key to everything and then you’ve got to have good people around you.

HQ: Tell us about your new initiative at Blair Atholl and how it works with RH Equestrian.

RH: So, we bought a stand and built a house here in Blair Atholl and then the opportunity arose at the start of this year to take over the running of the yard. I didn't want to do another yard, and my wife actually pushed it a little bit, but I'm glad she did. Like I said before, we have good people in charge of helping me, so you know that's been amazing; it's growing quickly and quicker than I had imagined, and we are almost full. Jess is the leading coach here, teaching from my youngest, who is two right up to adult riders, so we've

got all different heights and levels and ages, and then I come in and teach a few days, and you know, sort of work together well. We’ve recently got a top-level showjumper in Tam Rueda, who came and joined us at the stables, which is also amazing, so now we have from little ones right up to World Cup winners here, which has now ensured the RH brand is as diverse as possible. It is probably one of the most beautiful, picturesque yards I've ever seen, what with the golf course, wild animals, and everything, and the venue is exceptional. Hence, we are very lucky and excited to grow it and see where we end up.

HQ: What are your goals for the future with your businesses?

RH: Yeah, you know, as you get bigger and busier, the first thing that generally is my main worry is not to lose the standard, and that's why it was essential to have the right people involved that can help manage the little things that can sometimes go missing from having too much on your plate. That's why when I asked Hannah to work for RH, I knew she could get everything so organised, and it's just been an absolute massive help and weight

off my shoulders. Also, clients enjoy it because they can have someone to touch base with when I am busy. Also, having Jess manage and ensure the clients get consistent, professional coaching each week allows me to spread my time around and ensure nothing changes for those currently with us.

HQ: What would your advice be to young people looking up to you and your achievements?

RH: It’s an incredible sport, and over the years, I've learned that

hard work beats talent. I've taught people who are not necessarily the most talented. Still, they've worked hard and become talented and won World Cups, which is amazing, so you know my first thing would be to work hard, and if you dream it, you can achieve it and then also, as the great Gary Player said the more your practice the luckier you get and it is true because the more you train, and work hard at things the luckier you get in that you know how to go that little bit further and do that a little bit extra.

Also, be humble. When you lose, you’ve got to be graceful in losing and even more graceful when you're winning. Because when you're winning, people want you off the pedestal. They don't like that you're successful, and you just have to be humble. Nobody likes arrogance, and nothing is ever a given.

HQ: What do your boys think of the horses? Do you think they will follow in your footsteps?

RH: I think Hudson will be a worldeating champion and probably a rugby player or something like that; he's more worried about snacks than riding lessons, but Tommy is really keen. Ash and I love it when they go

riding, and it gets them out of the house, and you know, not in front of the TV, so it is important. Tommy loves it, but they go through phases at this age. He's really cute, and the other day, he came home, and he told me that he did “light seats going over poles”, and he was really excited, so he's loving it, and it's such a huge thing to see. I hope they don’t ride – I’d rather they play golf or something - but if they do, I will support them all the way.

HQ: Is there anyone you’d like us to thank for you?

RH: I want to take the opportunity to thank my sponsors at Blue Turtle, Western Shoppe, HH Feeds, and

Winx. Without them, the sport would be much more difficult than it already is. I’d also like to extend a massive thank you to Toyota for being able to put together the Triple Crown. It just has an extra special feel with them backing the events, and we riders really appreciate everything they do. Sometimes, I’m sure they feel they don’t get thanked enough, but riders really appreciate it – especially me; I’m very grateful.

HQ: Thanks for taking the time to chat with us today. We wish you the very best of luck in the Toyota SA Derby 2024, and, of course, the Triple Crown Series.

INTRACYTOPLASMIC

SPERM INJECTION (ICSI) IN HORSES

A DETAILED OVERVIEW

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) has become a revolutionary tool in equine reproductive technology. ICSI is an advanced assisted reproductive technique that allows for the direct injection of a single sperm cell into an oocyte (egg), increasing the chances of successful fertilisation. Originally developed for human infertility treatment, this technique has been successfully adapted to horses, helping to overcome some of the reproductive challenges specific to the equine species.

WHY ICSI IN HORSES?

Horses are known to have relatively low reproductive efficiency compared to other domestic animals, which makes advanced reproductive technologies particularly beneficial in certain scenarios. Some situations where ICSI is used in horses include:

1. Male infertility: ICSI can help stallions with low sperm count or poor sperm motility to achieve fertilisation of a mare’s oocyte. Even a tiny quantity of viable sperm is enough for ICSI, making it possible to use stallions that are otherwise considered subfertile.

2. Limited sperm availability: In cases where semen is scarce, such as from deceased or aged stallions,

ICSI allows the use of limited or poor-quality frozen sperm to produce offspring.

3. Genetic preservation: For ‘highly valuable’ genetics, such as those of sporthorses or rare breeds, ICSI offers a way to extend the reproductive life of animals by using cryopreserved sperm and oocytes long after the natural reproductive window has closed.

4. Infertile mares: ICSI can be used to help mares with cervical, uterine or oviduct problems or other infertility issues that prevent them from carrying a foal to term by transferring embryos into a surrogate (recipient) mare. However, ICSI will NOT be helpful if the cause of the mare's subfertility is due to her oocyte quality.

DID YOU KNOW?

ICSI was first introduced as a technique for horses in the late 1990s. The technique was initially developed for human reproductive medicine in the early 1990s and was later adapted for use in animals, including horses. Early research and trials in horses began in the mid-to-late 1990s, with the first successful production of a live foal using ICSI reported around 19961998. Since then, the technique has been refined and improved, becoming a valuable tool for equine reproduction.

THE ICSI PROCEDURE

ICSI in horses involves several steps that must be carefully coordinated to increase the likelihood of success.

1. Oocyte collection

Oocytes (eggs) are usually harvested from a mare’s ovaries through a procedure called transvaginal aspiration, where a needle guided by ultrasound retrieves oocytes from the ovaries of a live mare. This is most commonly done during the mare’s reproductive cycle but can also be performed outside the cycle. Interestingly, the procedure can also be performed post-mortem.

The success of ICSI heavily depends on the quality of the collected oocytes. After collection, oocytes undergo maturation in a lab environment to prepare them for fertilisation.

2. Sperm preparation

Since only one sperm is injected per oocyte, a small amount of sperm is enough. The sperm is prepared and assessed in a laboratory for viability, motility, and morphology. For some stallions, sperm may require special handling, including thawing if frozen and removing non-viable or damaged sperm.

3. Injection of sperm into the oocyte

Using a highly specialised microscope and a micromanipulator, the embryologist carefully injects a single sperm cell into the cytoplasm of the matured oocyte. This step requires extreme precision because improper handling can damage the oocyte.

Once injected, the fertilised oocyte is cultured in vitro to develop into an early-stage embryo (blastocyst).

4. Embryo transfer

After fertilisation and development in the lab, the embryo is transferred into a recipient mare’s uterus. This mare will carry the pregnancy to

term. Embryo transfer allows mares with reproductive problems to have offspring without having to carry a pregnancy themselves.

SUCCESS RATES OF ICSI

The success rate of ICSI in horses is lower compared to more natural methods of conception but has been steadily improving due to advancements in technology. The overall success rate of producing a live foal from ICSI currently ranges from 20% to 40%, depending on factors like sperm quality, mare fertility, and laboratory expertise. Given the ability to use scarce sperm resources or even previously unusable sperm, this success rate can be very valuable.

ADVANTAGES OF ICSI

The main advantages of ICSI are as follows:

• Increased flexibility: The technique offers breeders increased flexibility to manage fertility challenges, using limited sperm and enabling genetic preservation.

• Maximisation of genetic resources: With ICSI, breeders can maximise the genetic contribution of valuable stallions, even if sperm quality is low or limited in availability.

• Potential to use post-mortem oocytes: Oocytes can be collected from mares even after death, allowing breeders to extend the reproductive window for valuable genetics.

• Overcoming stallion infertility: Stallions that are not able to impregnate mares through traditional means may still contribute genetically through ICSI.

LIMITATIONS AND CHALLENGES

Despite its advantages, ICSI in horses also faces certain challenges:

• Cost: ICSI is labour-intensive and requires advanced laboratory equipment and skilled personnel, making it more expensive than traditional breeding or artificial insemination.

• Time and expertise: The procedure demands a high level of expertise in handling oocytes and sperm and in the subsequent embryo transfer. Success depends heavily on the reproductive specialist's skill.

• Ethical considerations: Like with other advanced reproductive technologies, there are ethical concerns surrounding manipulating reproduction. The selection of specific traits and the potential for overbreeding valuable genetics may raise issues within the equine industry.

DID YOU KNOW?

Callaho Warmblood Stud has produced Auction horses using a clone of the legendary Gem Twist.

FAMOUS HORSES

Several famous horses, particularly in the world of equine sports, have been bred using ICSI. Some notable examples of horses bred through ICSI include:

1. Totilas

Totilas, one of the most famous dressage stallions in history, has sired offspring via ICSI. Due to the stallion’s immense value and limited semen availability (especially after his retirement and death in 2020), breeders utilised ICSI to maximise his genetic legacy. His foals,

produced through advanced breeding techniques, continue to attract attention in the dressage world.

2. Gem Twist

Gem Twist, a legendary showjumper, was cloned, and his clones have been bred using ICSI. The original Gem Twist competed at the highest levels of international show jumping in the 1980s and 1990s. After his death, several clones were produced to preserve his genetic line, and ICSI has been employed to breed offspring from these clones to extend the influence of his exceptional genetics.

3. Chacco-Blue

Chacco-Blue, who needs no introduction here, has had offspring produced through ICSI. After his death in 2012, frozen semen from Chacco-Blue has been used in ICSI procedures to continue producing foals.

4. Baloubet du Rouet

Baloubet du Rouet, another legendary show jumping stallion, has also been part of breeding

programmes that use ICSI. His influence on the jumping world is immense, and ICSI has been employed to extend his genetic impact after his death in 2017.

5. Capitol I Capitol I, a foundation sire in showjumping, had his genetic material preserved and used in ICSI breeding programmes after his passing.

6. Calvaro V

Calvaro V, an Olympic showjumper, is another example of a stallion whose genetics have been extended using ICSI. Like many top showjumping horses, his semen has been carefully preserved and used in cutting-edge breeding programmes to produce offspring that compete at the highest levels.

7. Heartbreaker

The iconic Dutch Warmblood stallion Heartbreaker, known for

his exceptional jumping ability, has also been a part of ICSI breeding efforts. After his death in 2015, breeders have used ICSI to ensure his bloodlines continue to influence the showjumping world.

In each of these cases, ICSI has allowed breeders to extend the reproductive potential of deceased or retired stallions, contributing to the ongoing success of their genetic lines in competitive equestrian disciplines.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Swedish Warmblood Society has decided to no longer register foals produced with ICSI as of the 1st of March 2025. The Society stated, “The change is made with regard to the Animal Welfare Act, as it is a prohibited intervention in Sweden.” ICSI foals born in 2024 can still be registered with the Swedish Warmblood Studbook. The decision does not affect the reproductive technique of Embryo Transfer. Ultimately, laws and regulations regarding Embryo Transfer and ICSI procedures differ in various countries. For instance, they are more strict in Sweden and  Germany, but mare owners often have the procedure performed in Belgium, the Netherlands, or Italy to bypass these restrictions. It will be interesting to see if other countries follow in Sweden’s footsteps.

CONCLUSION

ICSI currently represents a powerful tool for horse breeders, offering solutions for male and female infertility, genetic preservation, and the use of limited or precious sperm resources. Although it is a relatively costly and labour-intensive procedure, and there are ethical concerns, the ability to overcome reproductive challenges makes it an invaluable technique in most countries for ‘high-value’ horses, particularly in sport and rare breeds.

As advancements in technology continue, it is expected that the efficiency and success rates of ICSI in equine reproduction will improve, making it more widely accessible to breeders. The question regarding the ethics of the procedure, however, is likely to remain, and it will be interesting to see the impact of the Swedish Warmblood Society’s ruling on the use of the technique going forward in other countries.
