Here at Capital Stud, we have invested in ‘growing our own’ champions for many years, and know the dividends this process pays. It therefore gives us great pleasure to introduce you to our first ever Broodmare Auction, where we offer our clients the opportunity to purchase their own mares in foal from our exquisite Broodmare Collection. This opportunity seeks to allow owners to experience the process, whilst also providing a more affordable way of creating your own sporthorse champion from the world’s best bloodlines. We firmly believe that the growth of the sport depends on quality sporthorses being made accessible to those with the talent to produce them. These mares, in foal to selected world-class stallions, are set to deliver the very best progeny. From worldranked number one stallion Chacco-Blue to Baloubet du Rouet and Heartbreaker, and out of the proven and sought-after marelines such as the lines of Usha van’t Roosaker, Qerly Chin and more, the world’s best bloodlines are all showcased here, and we are thrilled to offer you the opportunity to harness this genetic potential and cultivate your own Capital sporthorse. For the first time we are allowing buyers to keep their mare and foal with us at Summerhill Equestrian where they will be raised ‘the Capital Way’. All mares remaining at Summerhill Equestrian will be eligible for coverings from Capital stallions, another exclusive opportunity available to those wanting to invest in their future in the sport. TIMETABLE Auction Opens The Capital Stud Online Auction will open on the Tuesday the 21st June at 10:00am. The Collection consists of 17 broodmares certified in foal, who will go under the virtual hammer on the 23rd and 24th June 2022. Scheduled Closing Times: • Lot 1 to Lot 8 closes from 18:30 - 19:30 on Thursday, June 23rd • 2 horses will close every 15 minutes • 18:30 (Lot1&2), 18:45 (Lot 3&4), 19:00 (Lot 5&6), 19:15 (Lot 7&8) • An additional 5 minutes time is added to a specific lot if a bid is placed within the last 5 minutes of the specific horse’s closing time. This does not affect any of the other horse’s schedules, and is simply to allow everybody wishing to place bids on a particular lot to do so. • PLEASE NOTE: The auction preview on the website will adjust to notify you of the amended closing time. Horses closing first will appear at the top of the screen. • The virtual hammer will drop if no bids are made within 5 minutes of the previous bid. Our stallions – An introduction This auction sees foals by many of our top proven stallions including Capital Kronos, Capital Cornetblue, Capital My Friend and others, but also introduces some new stallions from our collection who bring more of the world’s best bloodlines onto Capital Stud’s soil. All stallions have been selected specifically to suit the broodmares on the auction, and to ensure that each foal is bred with the best attributes for the top of the sport. Henning himself selects each combination of stallion and dam-line and has invested many thousands of hours over the years scrutinising the latest rankings, pedigrees and performances. Henning takes no risks with his pairings, never simply relying on breeding the top mare to the top stallion, but instead selecting each stallion and damline combination for the subtle attributes that complement each other to produce world-class athletes. Kronos’ great potential as a breeding sire is clearly evident in his offspring.

Capital Kronos is full brother to the well-known Capital Homerus. Kronos is becoming well recognised in the showjumping arena with numerous podium finishes in the 1.45m classes with Nicole Horwood, with the pair recently winning the title at Gauteng Champs. After one year in the 1.50m classes, including his SA Derby debut, his scope, bravery and athleticism are unquestionable, and we see this stamped on all of his offspring. Being a son of Darco, out of such an important dam-line, 162, by Cash/Lord, Kronos has the proven bloodlines to be a world-class sport horse. This young stallion has provoked great excitement both internationally and here at Capital Stud.

His sire, Cornet Obolensky, has consistently produced elite offspring for the highest levels of the sport, and has thus maintained a place in the WBFSH Jumper Sire rankings since 2013. His dam-sire, Chacco-Blue, requires no introduction having been ranked #1 in the WBFSH Jumper Sire rankings for the past four years. He is also the sire of the Olympic Gold Medal winning Explosion W. Then, again on the dam side, we have Berlin the number 6 stallion in the world, and sire of the Olympic horse Berlux. His second dam, Pilonia, is the dam of Chamberlain (by Chacco-Blue) who jumps in the CSI 1.55m. Capital Coronetblue Floreval Z at his 30 day test received a 10 for his freejumping, and 9.24 in the partial index for jumping. A name he’ll live up to

Capital Legacy’s parents are both popular figures in the South African showjumping hall of fame. His sire, Capital Levubu, needs little introduction and his mother, Capital My Lady, needs even less. This pairing combines Cassini I on both sides of the pedigree. Capital Levubu has competed up to the 1.50m level with Bronwyn Dos Santos. Capital Levubu is sired by the Caretino son Cachas, who despite passing away at just 10 years of age produced 24 1.50m/1.60m horses. Levubu’s mother, Zinnia I, has produced many top horses for Capital Stud such as Capital Levubu, Capital New Star, Capital Pretorius, Capital Qorland, Capital Unicorn and recently the imported foal Capital V-Power. She has also produced top broodmares, for example, Capital Melissa who produced Capital Ayden, Capital Stud’s top seller. Zinnia I is by one of the most successful Holstein stallions Cassini I. Cassini I’s most successful offspring are the very well-known stallions Cumano and Berlin. Capital Legacy thus combines Capital Levubu, the tall horse with enormous scope and bravery, with Capital My Lady who is extremely agile, careful and, again, brave. Perfectly bred and born

Capital’s Hermes Pommex Z was sold on the Stephex Stables Auction, where he was described as being ‘perfectly bred and born’. By Halifax van het Kluizebos, who himself is by Heartbreaker, the blood running in this young stallion is laced with greatness. And yet, this stallion’s prowess in many ways lies in his damline; Nusha is out of the very best damline featuring Usha van’t Roosakker as her dam, who was not only a competitive 1.60m horse but has produced quality offspring and broodmares. Usha was widely acknowledged for being an outstanding open competitor, with a 10/10 jump and an endless willingness to perform. She has produced mares of whom five have already produced 1.50 competitors and also exciting stallions, like Kassandra van’t Roosakker. Nusha is sired by the top competitor and breeding stallion Emerald van’t Ruytershof. Emerald has competed at the top level including in the Rio Olympics in 2016. One of his most impressive offspring, Igor, qualified for the Tokyo Olympics but was unfortunately unable to compete.

It doesn’t get much better than this

Capital’s Harton van de Berghoeve Z was the top seller at the 2019 Zangersheide Auction, going for 76 000 Euros. His bloodlines see a combination of the top foundation stallions, Heartbreaker and Diamant de Semilly. Harton is sired by Heartbreaker, who passed away last year, after competing at the very top level of the sport, and producing many offspring who continue to do the same. In the 2014 World Equestrian Games there were three sons and 15 grandsons of Heartbreaker, all demonstrating his trademark blood and agility. One of Heartbreaker’s very well-known sons, Halifax van Kluizebos is the father of Capital’s Hermes. Hiamant van’t Roosakker’s damline goes back to the formidable mother of Grand Prix competitors, Usha van’t Roosakker via Atoucha van’t Roosakker. Hiamant van’t Roosakker is also the full sister to 1.50m showjumper Gatoucha van’t Roosakker (sold for EUR 570,000 as a broodmare) and half-sister to 1.60m jumper Electra van’t Roosakker. Being the daughter of the recently deceased elite foundation stallion Diamant de Semilly, who was the leader of the WBFSH in both 2015 and 2016, Hiamant Van’t Roosakker’s inherited talent is immense. Diamant de Semilly has produced many excellent stallions like Emerald van’t Ruytershof, Quickly de Kreisker, Don VHP Z, Dominator 2000 Z and Mumbai, as well as broodmares. He is known for giving his offspring a huge amount of scope and they are widely described as being ‘natural born winners’.

Out of a ‘supermare’ Capital’s Todos de Regor was sold on the Flanders Auction. His sire, Chacco-Blue, needs no introduction, still ranking as the number one stallion in the world. Similarly, Centa de Muze has a reputation for quality that precedes her, despite her young age. Described by the Flanders Foal Auction team as a ‘supermare’ Centa de Muze’s offspring are almost guaranteed to be potential international competitors. By way of illustration, her offspring including Freestyle de Muze, Horizon de Regor, Inri de Regor, Kerly de Regor and Melia de Regor all compete in the 1.50 – 1.60 level. Centa’s dam, Walloon de Muze is the second dam of the very impressive approved stallion Million Dollar. Walloon de Muze is out of the remarkable Qerly Chin who is probably one of the most well-known dams for breeding success, not only in terms of competition horses but also in terms of breeding exquisite broodmares, like Narcotique de Muze. Some examples of the offspring of the broodmares of Qerly Chin include I’m Special de Muze, Walnut De Muze, as well as many other 1.50 and 1.60 competitors.

Capital My Friend is sired by the well-known breeding stallion, Nabab de Reve. Nabab de Reve is by the world-renowned stallion, Quidam de Revel, who is consistently in the top of the World Rankings. Quidam de Revel’s sons, Nabab de Reve and Guidam, have represented him well as sporthorses as well as breeding stallions. My Friend is out of a Heartbreaker mare and it is this formidable combination of bloodlines that give My Friend all the talent and technique needed for the modern sport. Sadly, Capital My Friend sustained an injury that has, to date, prohibited his return to the competition arena. For now we are enjoying the way he replicates his qualities in his youngsters, and hope to see him back competing one day soon.

Why the mare? Our perspective

The best riders need the best horses. Quite how to breed one is an age-old question. To answer it, top global breeders tend to point to the dam-line. Mares that come from the best dam-lines, when put to the correct stallions at least, more often than not produce the best offspring. Quality, inevitably, breeds quality. Historically, breeders have placed the stallion front and centre; there is a growing movement, however, especially amongst some of the best breeders in the world, to give greater attention to the mare and her dam-lines. The fact that detailed information on these dam-lines is freely available certainly aids the process. What exactly is a dam-line, then? Quite simply, the dam-line tracks the succession of mares from a particular foundation mare. This foundation mare is often special in her own right, but builds a reputation on the performance of her progeny. Of course, it is possible for a weak mare to come from within a strong and proven dam-line: full sisters, for instance, might well produce different quality offspring. There is not doubt then that some branches of a dam-line will become more desirable than others. Some branches of a dam-line will also show greater consistency. The breeder’s challenge, naturally, is to select the correct branch to produce high performance animals.

Selecting the stallion tends to follow the selection of the dam-line in the best breeding programs. It generally follows that a top horse should come from the combination of a mare from a strong damline and a suitable stallion, breeding for his dominant traits. The suitability of the stallion, however, is paramount. He should enhance the mare’s potential, and counteract any weaknesses. The Stallion Index is essential when making this decision. Again, stallions are placed on this Index less for their own quality than for the performance and characteristics of their progeny. Cor de la Bryère is a case in point: not a performer himself, he ascended the Stallion Index due to the enormous success of his offspring on the competition circuit. A stallion can also balance deficiencies: if, for instance, a dam needs more ‘blood’, she can be put to a stallion that breeds ‘blood’; similarly, if the dam needs better technique, a stallion that breeds technique would be most suitable. Rarely, an exceptional mare can be bred to a variety of stallions and produce good offspring with most of them. Usha Van’t Roosakker is one such example: her entire dam-line (BWP100) has produced top mares, despite being bred to a variety of stallions. There is no doubt then that a top broodmare is an invaluable asset for any breeding programme. Some of the top producers of winning world-class showjumpers have never set foot in an arena and perhaps never jumped a jump and yet their genetics and the heritability of their genes sets their offspring apart. At Capital Stud, there are multiple treasured broodmares who produce unmistakable quality time after time and we look forward to sharing some of these broodmares with you on this auction. Our vision is that through making these broodmares available, the opportunity to create your own champion horses from your selected dam-line becomes affordable for those with the passion and talent to ride these top-end horses.

Half-sister to 2019 Auction horse Capital Chicane

This striking mare is a daughter of Capital Armani, who shares the same sire as Capital Don Cumarco (Cumano). Cumano is one of the most wellknown offspring of Cassini I, and was the world champion in 2006. Capital Almeada’s mother, Capital Calla is also the mother of the 2019 Auction horse Capital Chicane. 3. CERTIFIED IN FOAL/LIVE FOAL GUARANTEE 3.1 Pregnant broodmares have been certified ‘in foal’ by a veterinarian in the days leading up to the auction. The ‘loss of pregnancy’ risk therefore passes to the new owner upon acceptance of their auction bid. Capital Stud will not be liable for any loss of pregnancy of a broodmare sold at the auction. The only exception to this exists where the bid is accepted and the broodmare remains in permanent livery at Summerhill Equestrian.
