Welcome to the Capital Stud Auction 2022.
The last twelve months have seen much growth at Capital Stud. The year has been filled with highlights - our inaugural Broodmare Auction, the continued development of our team, the increasing opportunities available at our incredible stud and facility at Summerhill Equestrian, the brand new pastures for our new horses, and our brilliant ‘Class of 2022’ at The School of Equine Management Excellence. However, as always our main excitement comes from watching our beautiful horses grow and develop day by day; from foals in the pasture, to Auction day, to their journey up the grades, to their ultimate success in the top classes. They are perfectly bred and perfectly born.
Henning’s commitment to breeding horses that are consistent and can compete and win in the top grades and on the international stage remains steadfast, and this is embodied by the 2022 Capital Stud Auction Collection. Each year the offering improves, and with Capital Stud horses already proving a dominant force in the 1.50m classes in South Africa, we eagerly await the inevitable ascent of these young athletes to the very top.
Our dream would not be possible without our loyal supporters and the clients who patiently produce these youngsters to fulfil their potentials. We are thankful to each and every one of you for the parts you play, and wish you a successful Auction and year ahead!
“ There are proven horses for a reason – blood doesn’t lie. Our goal for the stud is to breed and produce the best horses in the world, and that is going to require the best damlines and the mostsuitable stallions.” - Henning Pretorius
With very best wishes
Capital Stud’s goal is to breed modern sport horses with all the best attributes and qualities to meet the market’s ambitions to reach the top of the sport. Nobody has made bigger investments in the equestrian industry in southern Africa than Henning and, as a team, our desire and commitment to see South African showjumping thrive at an international level has never been stronger.
Capital Stud’s philosophy is consistent and the results affirming. From Capital Don Cumarco, the little grey foal in the headlights who grew together with Nicole Horwood to become legends in the sport in South Africa, to Capital Colnardo, who was spotted as an athletic young colt at the Holsteiner Stallion Selection, Henning has sought and reproduced the qualities he knew were required to produce top showjumpers.
When looking at showjumping, the 1.50m class is the ultimate measure; it is where riders, coaches, teams and horses are tested, proven and rewarded. Through the levels, the quality and consistency of Capital Stud horses is plain to see; Henning’s vision and the traits he breeds and believes in cultivating are confirmed time after time. Just five years after the first Capital Stud Auction of 2017, we are delighted with the growth and development of the Capital horses, the patience and perseverance that has gone into their production, and the results we ultimately see, with over a dozen horses consistently claiming tickets and podium finishes at the 1.50m level.
And yet, our team are not willing to rest here and simply follow our own formula. There is always more to do and more improve ments to be made. Henning continues to seek out the best in the world and deliver it to South African equestrian sport. He never allows Capital Stud to fall behind, because, as he says himself, “you have to keep up with Europe is doing. You can’t sit still.”
Capital Stud’s latest crop of stallions and mares imported from Europe add to the entourage of greats that already bear the illustri ous Capital prefix. These top international sporthorses are, in the words of Dirk Zagers, “Set to be the future play-makers of the sport. They are sure to create serious waves across the country and further afield.”
Our ambition, drive, dedication and passion for equestrian excellence is the golden thread running through South African Show jumping and the Capital Stud legacy. There is much growth anticipated in the next few years in the equestrian sport, and this 2022 Collection is set to play a sizeable role in that future.

This combination of Caretino and Cassini I has produced numerous world-class horses, like the exceptional Berlin. Caretino is all about top-minds and rideability and Cassini I delivers quality and athleticism. Levubu is so very special for breeding in South Africa, because he embodies all of their traits - athleticism, blood, quality and mentality. Under Bronwyn Meredith Dos Santos he is a dominant force in the 1.50m classes, and his offspring all bear his stamp. You will know when a Levubu walks into the ring as they embody his qualities; they are sure to follow in their captivating father’s footsteps.
Capital Colnardo’s pedigree includes the lines of Cor de la Bryere, Capitol I and Ladykiller xx. He showcases the best Holsteiner blood, including Carthago, Lord, and Corrado I. Most significantly of all, however, his bloodline features Marlon xx who is one of the most influential Thoroughbred stallions in showjumping.
There have been so many amazing Colnardo offspring with his world class signature; from Capital Colman to Capital Claribel and many, many more. On this auction we have a host of Colnardo offspring, each expressing the signature stamp of their father. They have exceedingly good rideability, with top canters and natural balance that sets them up for success.

Capital Cancoon is the son of the legendary Capital Colnardo out of a Capital Don Cumarco mare. With these bloodlines he is destined for greatness!
Cancoon is in some ways the easiest, but also in others, the most difficult, horse I have ever had the privelege of riding. He gives me a world class feeling in the ring.
Together with my instructor Neriske Prinsloo Hill we plan everything around Cancoon and what he needs to ensure he gets the absolute best for his future career.

This scopey stallion is built with agility, athleticism and speed; qualities he passes on to all of his offspring. In the words of Dirk Zagers “Kronos’s offspring are sharp as razor blades. They are modern, intelligent, scopey and blooded. Produced well they are fabulous bets for the future.”

Rendement, who previously competed with Johan Lotter, had a remarkable competition record of his own. He was a proven talent and we are honoured to produce his exceptional progeny.
Rendement’s greatest asset was his temperament and he passes this on to all of his offspring. In Dirk’s words “He always wanted to go, no matter how high or how difficult the track. His offspring are exactly the same; they want to do well. They don’t overjump - air is for the birds - but they carry their rider safely from one side of the fence to the other, with intelligence, sharpness and all the scope in the world. Whether under a professional or amateur, they are serious contenders for the top.”

She has moved from the 80cm classes up into the 1.10s in under 6 months and has won or placed in most of the classes she’s been entered in. She is a playful, rideable mare with a great work ethic, who also has an incredible temperament for performing under pressure. She is highly intelligent, and each week her scope is growing beyond our expectations. Reine Marshall of Optima Sport Horses has done an exceptional job with her production so far, and in 2023 we plan to start taking Tina to more competitions out of province and continue her excellent record up into the open classes” - Amy Engelbrecht

This time, Darco (one of the best sport sires of all time) is recognised in the direct bloodline as Homerus’ sire. Homerus’ dam-line comes from the very successful Holsteiner line no. 162 (Carthago and Canturo) out of Cash/Lord.
Homerus’ half brother, Couscous van Orti sired by Nabab de Reve competed in the CSI5* classes under Samuel Parot and continues to excel today.
Homerus was the winner of the free-jumping competition for three-year-olds at President’s Cup in 2010 and developed up through the grades, competing in the 1.50m classes with Leona van der Merwe.
In the words of Dirk , “ Don’t buy work, buy success - and that’s Homerus.”

This stallion has provoked great excitement both internationally and here at Capital Stud.
Capital Cornetblue Floreval Z at his 30 day test received a 10 for his freejumping, and 9.24 in the partial index for jumping. Under Nicole Horwood, this ‘bred in the blue’ stallion is already establishing himself in the 1.20m classes.
In Nicole’s words “Cornetblue has insane rideability – he’s adjustable and balanced with an exceptional mouth. His nature is amazing. He reminds me very much of Capital Colnardo –he’s intelligent, efficient and fast. This is a VERY exciting horse.”

Capital Qorland is demonstrating great promise for the future. In the words of Nicole Horwood, “ He has a big scopey jump, is balanced and careful.” He is jumping in the 1.20m classes and it’s fair to say he’s throwing ALL the right shapes.
Capital Qorland is the son of Corland VDL and Zinnia I. Zinnia I is the mother to Capital Levubu, Capital Pretorius, Capital Ayden and Capital New Star. With a list of progeny like this, it’s hard to argue that the damline is not crucial for creating your champion.

Figaro is a stallion of the future and certainly one to look out for in the showjumping arena.
Capital Figaro D’Isigny was purchased at the Fences Auction as a foal. Figaro is sired by Kannan GFE and out of a Dollar Du Murier mare, Miloust D’Isigny. Figaro is the full brother to top mare Albfuhren Paille, who partnered with Steve Guerdat to win the Longines FEI World Cup held in Las Vegas in 2015. Capital Figaro’s first offspring were born in 2019.
This impressive stallion is begining his competive career under Nicole Horwood.

With bloodlines like these, Enturo issure to shape the future of breeding within South Africa.
Enturo’s sire, Canturo, is one of the top 30 stallions in the world. Canturo is also the sire to Goodluck, winner of the Gold with the Irish team at the European Championships in 2017. Enturo de Thetan is out of the same mother as Relamm de Fetan, who jumped in the 1.45m classes with Otto Streuer for Switzerland. Capital Enturo de Thetan’s second dam, Harmony de Fetan is the dam of Lamm de Fetan – Winner of the Nations Cup in Aachen with the French team and ridden by Timothee Anciaume.

Kicky Queen is also the mother of Moeen, who competes in the 1.60m classes internationally.
Capital Impossible is currently competing at the 1.40m level with Nicole Horwood. The best is still to come.

Capital My Friend is sired by the well-known breeding stallion, Nabab de Reve. Nabab de Reve is by the world-renowned stallion, Quidam de Revel, who is consistently at the top of the World Rankings. Quidam de Revel’s sons, Nabab de Reve and Guidam, have represented him well as sport horses as well as breeding stallions.
My Friend is out of a Heartbreaker mare and it is this formidable combination of bloodlines that give My Friend all the talent and technique needed to compete successfully up the grades.

Capital Legacy’s parents are both popular figures in the South African showjumping hall of fame. His sire, Capital Levubu, needs little introduction and his mother, Capital My Lady, needs even less.
This pairing combines Cassini I on both sides of the pedigree. Capital Levubu is sired by the Caretino son Cachas. When Cachas completed his 30-day test in 2012 he scored a 10.0 for jumping ability, 9.25 for character and 9.00 for his canter. Then, Capital My Lady, who is currently competing with Thomas van Rijckevorsel in the 1.40m classes, is one of the most exciting mares on the circuit today, with an abundance of scope, carefulness, bravery and athleticism.
With proven bloodlines like these, we had high-hopes for this match, but Legacy has overdelivered on all our expectations. This stallion embodies the future ambitions of Capital Stud.
Capital’s Hermes Pommex Z was sold on the Stephex Stables Auction, where he was described as being ‘perfectly bred and born’. By Halifax van het Kluizebox, who himself is by Heartbreaker, the blood running in this young stallion is laced with greatness. And yet, this stallion’s prowess in many ways lies in his damline; Nusha is out of the very best damline featuring Usha van’t Roosakker as her dam, who was not only a competitive 1.60m horse but has produced quality offspring and broodmares.

Capital’s Harton van de Berghoeve Z was the top seller at the 2019 Zangersheide Auction, going for 76 000 Euros. His bloodlines see a combination of the top foundation stallions, Heartbreaker and Diamant de Semilly.
Harton is sired by Heartbreaker, who passed away last year, after competing at the very top level of the sport, and producing many offspring who continue to do the same. In the 2014 World Equestrian Games there were three sons and 15 grandsons of Heartbreaker, all demonstrating his trademark blood and agility. One of Heartbreaker’s very well-known sons, Halifax van Kluizebos is the father of Capital’s Hermes.
Capital’s Todos de Regor was sold on the Flanders Auction. His sire, Chacco-Blue, needs no introduction, still ranking as the number one stallion in the world. Similarly, Centa de Muze has a reputation for quality that precedes her, despite her young age. Described by the Flanders Foal Auction team as a ‘supermare’ Centa de Muze’s offspring are almost guaranteed to be potential international competitors. By way of illustration, her offspring including Freestyle de Muze, Horizon de Regor, Inri de Regor, Kerly de Regor and Melia de Regor all compete in the 1.50 –1.60 level. Centa’s dam, Walloon de Muze is the second dam of the very impressive approved stallion Million Dollar.

As an animal nutritionist, I know that despite their large body size, horses can be very sensitive if fed a concentrated diet. Indigestion is rarely caused by what is fed but rather by how it is fed.
Hindgut digestion, which occurs in the horse’s cecum and large colon, progresses most efficiently when horses are allowed continual access to forage and limited access to feedstuffs that could upset the pH of the cecum, including large grain meals.
The hay alone will not fulfill the daily nutrient requirements of all the essential nutrients of your horse. The nutrient requirements of your horse will vary depending on its age, level of activity, and gestation period.
A horse owner that can understand how the complex equine digestive system functions can better manage their horse’s feeding program to ensure that they are getting the best nutrients with the least complications.
In the stomach and small gut, dietary protein is digested and absorbed as amino acid and much of the soluble carbohydrate is hydrolzed and absorbed as monosaccharides as well as fats and essential vitamins.
Structural carbohydrates like cellulose and hemicellulose, along with starch and other soluble carbohydrates that escape digestion in the small intestine, flow into the cecum and colon (large intestine) where it is subjected to fermentation by bacteria, protozoa, and fungi.
Capital Toulouse has a presence you can’t ignore. With the same mother as young competition stallion Capital Cornetblue Floreval Z and Capital Moonlight, he is destined to be great.
Cha Cha is the daughter of the world number one breeding stallion Chacco-Blue. ChaccoBlue is known for giving his offspring a workable mindset, great front end technique, and bravery. Then on the stallion side we have Diarado, the son of Diamant de Semilly. Despite being the youngest stallion on the WBFSH, Diarado has almost 100 offspring competing in the 1.50m level and 60 approved sons in Germany alone.

Hera is also the only daughter of the very competitive CSI5* 1.60m horse, Cella (1.60m), who is by Cento and out of the legendary Usha Van’t Roosakker (1.50m). This is a stallion destined to excel.
