REPORTS
By the time that you see this issue, the AGM will be over. Looking back on the last year, members of GenCom will admit to it being a very busy year, but most has been on ‘back of house’ issues, which set the scene for a better managed Club. Despite all the external issues, both GenCom and management have been extremely supportive in maintaining focus on the objectives. Please read each of their comprehensive reports that reflect this resilience. The Club has largely remained untouched by illness caused by COVID-19. But the individual lives of our membership have been affected as jobs are lost and members leave the Club. In this regard, it is, and will continue to be, an extremely challenging time for many this year across almost every sector. Most people in this situation will face serious personal challenges going forward, but I also believe that, in the long run, most will adapt and find a good Plan B.
DON JOHNSTON Commodore
As you know, with the onset of the Northern Hemisphere winter, there has been a resurgence of infections and deaths, and it is now likely that, globally, there will be no relaxation of travel restrictions until next summer. But Hong Kong is doing much better than most, and our Club is seeing a welcome increase in activity both on and off the water … and that is great news! Last weekend my wife and I observed the HHYC Scallywag Foundation Open Dinghy Regatta 2020. It was truly impressive to see around 150 dinghies competing in four locations and 13 classes over the weekend. There were around 200 sailors, but there were around another 100 adults in support, including power boating members are being encouraged to get qualified by the RYA to manage safety boats. The weather was sunny with a good light breeze making for ideal conditions for the enthusiastic young sailors and very professional race management. I am grateful to Sun Hung Kai through its Scallywag Foundation for its support for this Regatta. In passing, the Club trains around 4,000 young sailors each year. Don Johnston Commodore

REPORTS
Hi everyone A lot is happening, as ever, and here’s the overview of where we’re up to right now… Masterplan overview and progress update Stage 1 new kitchen storage area & access lift With the impending Hiram’s Highway widening planned for April 2023, it’s imperative we keep the pace of projects up to ensure we get government approval for the alternative plans for our kitchen storage areas, with the existing storage areas being affected by the Highway’s Department works. As such, we are preparing submissions to the relevant government departments for a replacement kitchen storeroom planned in the current void behind the inner restaurant. We are submitting this together with the alreadyprepared detailed plans for the access lift, which will provide much-needed better access for disabled members and guests.
PAUL ARKWRIGHT Vice Commodore
Inge has produced some concept designs for the lift, which we will mock-up the entrance to and get disabled members to trial and see which is more workable from their perspective. Stage 2 new terrace (1/F) and sail training areas (G/F) (estimated completion date 2026) As per government directives, we need to regularise the tent covering garden bar area, i.e. remove it at some stage in the future. This process will not be happening overnight, as the tent is currently providing essential shade for the sail training and Sailability activities, and we are in the lengthy process of submitting initial plans for this to be replaced with a permanent single-storey structure. The new structure will be functional yet sympathetic to the club environs and is being planned as follows: •
•
1/F Open terrace extension to the sundeck all the way out to near the sampan steps—so we will be able to look out right over the water while still retaining sight of original clubhouse. G/F Underneath will be covered area for sail training & prizegivings etc.
Knight Frank has already submitted an explanatory letter to the District Lands Office (DLO) about such plans, and we are in the process of applying for regularisation of the garden bar tent to the Town Planning Board in this regard. This is a relatively lengthy process as, after the TPB application, we then must apply to BD with the detailed design and then apply for lease modification to accommodate this additional covered area.
project—comprising six works zones, which will be used rotationally to minimise operational impact, while the seabed around the marina is professionally surveyed, as there are no records in the last 20 years of seabed data around the vicinity.
Seawall repairs AECOM are submitting documents for the required excavation and lateral support (ELS) works and relevant works planning to BD in November 2020. Get ready for a phased repair project, and please be patient while works are on-going, which will provide not only a fully-reinstated and safer seawall, but also a bit of extra boatyard space to boot.
Boat Racks Safety Walkway CY, Rene and Sonny are working on appointing an AP to start the initial design work on the safety walkway.
Marine Pile interim cap fixing The protective white caps have been delivered and fitted to the tops of the existing piles. All caps have now been successfully fitted, excluding six piles which already had plastic protective caps fitted to the same height. Marina Pile long-term replacement project While the interim caps provide greater interim security across the marina, we are also preparing for the complete long-term replacement of piles, as the existing marina was built almost 20 years ago. AECOM will manage the relevant GI works for this
Compliant disabled access to pontoons The AP, Yin Lee, is preparing a letter of reply to BD’s letter.
Foundations for new crane AECOM will conduct works to ensure that the loading capacity of the ground in the boatyard is sufficient to support the new crane. OpsCom will cover the purchase and oversight of the operation of the new crane itself. Widening of Hiram’s Highway CY sent our follow-up letter objection reply to Highways Department (HyD) on 15 September 2020, in the meantime, we will go ahead with preparations for the inevitable road widening and plan to have alternative kitchen storage in place before the 2023 HyD works so the kitchen can store their food and equipment. We will also need to relocate the staff canteen. Paul Arkwright Vice Commodore

REPORTS
Time flies and, as we are hitting the month of November, I just realized that I have been at Hebe a full year already. As we reach the last two months of the year, it seems a good time to reflect on the past year and to start looking ahead to see what the New Year will bring. With some of the government restrictions being lifted, autumn sailing is back on track, and our sailing team is busy catching up with all the races and courses. A special thanks to our long-term sponsors such as UK Sailmakers, Carlsberg, Fragrant Harbour, Mount Gay and San Miguel for their support with our iconic races like the Port Shelter Regatta and Typhoon Series—which were all held very successfully in September. We are in the process of recruiting a new Food & Beverage Manager, and by the time this issue of the Hebe Jebes runs of the press, we will hopefully have identified the right candidate.
RENE VERHULST
We have replaced our coffee machine and are in the process of upgrading our coffee brand to the famous Italian Segafredo®, which includes the choice of Expresso Casa (extra strong!) and the Massimo. We have also changed the milk to the best and freshest milk available in HK—from Japan!
General Manager We will have our first wine dinner on 19 November, featuring Champagnes only! Join us for a Swiss Night on the 20 November with Raclette, Cheese Fondue and Swiss wines. Check out the exciting F&B Christmas and New Year programme on other pages in this magazine full of all the traditional happenings and events such as Children’s Christmas Show, Welsh Male Christmas Choir and the New Year’s Eve Party! As ever, please book in advance to secure your seats. We will shortly introduce car stickers for both cars and motorbikes for all members using the car park for identification purposes to ensure the right people and vehicles are using the car park. Please note you will also still need your membership card to open the barrier. Please contact the Marine Office to collect your stickers. At the time of writing this message, most of the preventive measures and restrictions in relation to COVID-19 remain effective. Therefore, I once again ask for your cooperation in keeping the Club a risk-free environment by continuously complying with the rules and regulations (such as wearing masks while you are onshore, and maintaining social distancing) so that everyone can continue to enjoy the Club and sailing in the midst of these crazy pandemic times! It hasn’t been an easy first year at Hebe with demonstrations going on when I arrived and the COVID-19 that followed, but I have thoroughly enjoyed all these challenges, and I believe that Hebe is a truly special one-of-a-kind yacht club. The Club’s business has inevitably been affected by all these uncontrollable outside circumstances, but with the extraordinary efforts of the entire team and the understanding and patience of all members, we will ride out this storm and sail into better weather. Thanks to you all for your wonderful support during the last year. Wishing you all happy, safe and festive holidays to come! Rene Verhulst General Manager

HHYC MULTI-ACTIVITY WEEK WITH COACH ASH
HHYC MultiActivity Week with Coach Ash 專訪白沙灣遊艇會帆船及奇趣訓練營教練 by Camellia Poon
This issue we interview coach Hassan Kennedy Ayonote, a certified personal trainer and coach, who has been getting stuck in at Hebe with the multi-activity weeks, where kids get the chance to engage in a range of activities including sailing and playing basketball—although not at the same time!
Hassan Kennedy
What sparked your interest to become a coach? I have been coaching basketball for about four years, and my interest for basketball originated from when I was growing up back in Nigeria as a kid, watching my older relatives and friends in the neighbourhood, challenge themselves to one-on-one and team tournaments. I went from watching them play for hours to picking up a ball and playing against my twin brother at every opportunity I had to practice and improve my skills for the game. I must also say that my passion for the sport is attributed to a household of four extremely competitive brothers that always had a point to prove regardless of the time, day or season we played. When I turned 14, I got the chance to join and play regularly for my highschool team, and I haven't lost my passion since then.

HHYC MULTI-ACTIVITY WEEK WITH COACH ASH
How did you get into personal training? My journey to becoming a personal trainer was as a result of my dedication and commitment to playing and studying the game of basketball. My twin brother and I would spend endless hours working on our physical strengths, and I carried on with that regiment which has helped me enormously. After moving to Hong Kong in 2011 from the United Kingdom, where I studied and played professional basketball. I quickly registered with a fitness club mainly to keep up with my physical activities and further improve my knowledge of the neuromuscular system. I quickly realised that peak athletic performance is also dependent on having a good knowledge of the human anatomy.
Being a certified personal trainer comes with numerous challenges, e.g. studying a lot about the human anatomy and understanding the needs of clients (goals) and creating systematic plans and strategies to help participants (clients) achieve their goals through hard work, fun and excitement (exercising). I like being a personal trainer because I use it as a channel to give support to anyone looking to stay fit and achieve lifestyle modifications by believing in themselves and sticking to a realistic regiment that can help them overcome any health or performance limitations.

I quickly realised that knowing how to train myself and others through demonstrations of specific movements and actions wasn't satisfying enough to win the confidence of potential clients in need of a personal trainer to help them achieve their fitness goals. Therefore, I decided to add some extra certifications to my portfolio by becoming a Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) accredited by the National Association of Sports Medicine (NASM) USA. Since acquiring this certificate, I have felt a sense of fulfilment, making me more confident in preparing clients for the next phase of their lives in regards to keeping a healthy lifestyle.

Are there any differences between coaching children and adults? Absolutely! There are several differences between coaching kids and adults. For starters, I find kids honest and innocent. Kids express their boredom and unwillingness to participate in an activity if they find it difficult or less joyful. Believe me; it can be quite intimidating and challenging; listening to kids reveal their genuine thoughts about a task that a coach may find fun and easy when they don't. It didn't take me too long to realise this when I started coaching.
Another difference between coaching kids and adults is that the kids keep you constantly thinking on your toes and prepared to provide a riposte to the extremely clever questions they ask about everything. Especially when you can sense that it's a tricky question and any made-up answer might discredit your knowledge, e.g. How far is Jupiter from Earth? or Why do rockets lift off vertically? Thank God for Uncle Google, who seems to come in quite handy (cheeky minions).
Kids can be very creative in sessions. They come up with fun ideas for games and make sure you give them your full attention for you to understand the instructions they give. I sometimes rely on their creativity because it helps to regress a vigorous activity to a contended level or progress it to a slightly strenuous activity if it is easily achieved. I appreciate coaching kids because it has taught me to be open to hard criticism and most importantly, to be an extremely patient individual.
Coaching adults also comes with its fair share of challenges and opportunities. The biggest challenge with most people in this segment is STARTING. Time constraints due to work and family commitments make it a bit challenging for most adults to become less sedentary. Furthermore, adults tend to be a bit diplomatic when giving feedback which can be easily digested and used to enhance session plans, coaching style and the relationships between the parties involved in the programme. 36
The training intensity is much higher and harder than that of kids, obviously. One difference between coaching kids and adults is time management. Kids have set times for their daily or weekly events, e.g. after school activities, piano lessons, ballet, sports etc. With adults, there is always the need to be flexible with time as the point mentioned earlier; time constraints make it a bit of an obstacle to keep up with regular timeslots.
I don't think I have a favourite segment to coach. I enjoy coaching both segments of clients because I learn differently from both parties on ways to improve myself as a person and as a coach.

How did you come to know about Hebe? I have known about Hebe since I started living Sai Kung. It's quite a popular entity in the Sai Kung community. I was invited several times to the Club to get a feel of sailing and encouraged to pick it up as a hobby. Unfortunately, for an unknown reason to myself, I couldn't make the time to get around to it. Nevertheless, at the start of this year just as the COVID-19 pandemic kicked in, I was approached by Rob Allen the Sail Training Centre Manager of the Club, who shared the possibilities of what could come out of a relationship between 'Coach Ash' and Hebe. The first project I was involved in was the Summer Multiactivity Week which was a very interesting experience for me.

I had the privilege of coaching a large number of kids in basketball as well as overseeing some land activities, including beach Olympics. Unfortunately, this fun-packed programme was cut short due to the second wave of the pandemic that hit Hong Kong at the start of last summer. Nonetheless, I am proud to say I was part of that event which, in a way, exposed me to the Hebe culture and values. Furthermore, being part of the Hebe family as a part-time staff has given me a sense of belonging with more responsibilities to the Sai Kung community.

How does fitness training for sailing compare to training for basketball?
Similarities Just like basketball, sailing is a team sport that requires all the players of the team to play unique roles that can be integrated into a program to help develop team culture and spirit that can help achieve a team's goal. I have gotten quite familiar with sailing over these past few months, and I have seen some similarities with basketball. For example, It is a competitive sport that requires its participants to possess a high level of speed agility and quickness, using fitness variables that require great discipline, attention to detail and cooperation for success.
In addition, respect for rivalry and sportsmanship regardless of how confident and technically sound the participant may be or not giving in to intimidation from opponents prior to a competition. Above all, one key similarity between both sports is the amount of fun the sports give either in defeat or triumph.
Differences Then, of course, there are differences, the most obvious difference between the sports is that basketball is played on land and sailing is done on the sea—thanks to Mother Nature for keeping that pretty straightforward. Basketball is played within a shorter time period compared to sailing; there are numerous breaks known as timeouts during basketball matches, I am yet to see or hear a sailor call for a time out during competitions. I don't think it would sit well with teammates. Personally, I find sailing a bit more demanding than basketball because it requires the production and control of force in quite an unstable environment, which can be extremely challenging.
Fitness training is something I am quite passionate about just because it is a form of challenge that requires you (the personal trainer) to assist someone (a client) through trials and tribulations to achieve specific goals in improving his/her lifestyle.
As a personal trainer, I always have to empathise, and sometimes sympathise, with clients— especially when taking them through tough physical variables during sessions. I think one common challenge in this field is the consistency of the fitness lifestyle because some clients may relapse into old habits which may be hard to get off and even when they do it sometimes is tougher starting all over. Hence, my slogan for my clients is #theresnofinishline. This reminds all of us of the need to keep working hard and keep going because it's never enough with fitness, just don't go too hard sometimes. 38
What are your personal goals? My key goal at the moment is to grow the game of basketball in Sai Kung. There is some awareness, which is really good; however, I believe Sai Kung has so many talents in basketball not just to show to Hong Kong but to the world at large. Thanks to the first-ever basketball programme that was launched by Hebe last summer through the multi-activity camp—this revealed that there are a lot of local kids with good knowledge and skills of basketball. That was an eye-opener to the prospects in Sai Kung. Hopefully, with more plans in the pipeline, similar to that of last summer's multi-activity camp, I believe basketball will become more popular than it is right now, reaching a wider range of households and youngsters in our community.
I am also keen on building a female basketball league that will consist of a few teams competing against themselves to help give the girls some competitive and social experience. I am currently working with some young female talents in the community and have been impressed by their development in the game and their attitude towards this vision. I believe that the involvement of residents and businesses in the community in promoting the participation of not just girls but boys as well in any sport can help turn goals similar to mine into reality.

In this challenging year, what health tips would you share with members and families? Although a large part of 2020 has been quite exigent for many people. Nevertheless, for some, myself included, it has been an inspiring year. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a rapidly changing world that we live in, and these changes are evident in almost all forms of life, from Zoom sessions replacing physical contacts in schools and offices to being cut off from family and loved ones for the sake of quarantining for 14 days. Notwithstanding this, I have also witnessed how creative people have been in their thoughts and works, which has helped them adapt to the circumstances they find themselves in.

According to an article by Mind HK on the recently concluded Hong Kong Mental Health Conference 2020 with the theme, "Youth in focus". A survey carried out between 27 June and 14 July, which involved students sitting the Diploma of Secondary Examination (DSE), revealed that 52% of the candidates returned a stress reading of 7 or above on a scale of 1-10. This represented an increase of 4% on the previous year's result. Some of the reasons that led to the rise in the stress reading include less schooling, re-evaluation of marks and test delays. All these left students felt unprepared and less interested in writing their annual exams. The organisers also pointed out that such low morale regarding examinations and university acceptance negatively impacted the overall mental health of students.

This is just one example of some of the things people are accustomed to, and I sympathise with them. However, a way of alleviating these burdens is to regularly participate in one physical activity or another to keep the mind distracted on accomplishing a physically demanding task that can be low-tomoderate or advanced. Run 1-5 kilometres 3 times a week or walk instead if you are not a fan of running. Try out some strength or circuit training exercises. I usually see pods of people training together outdoors around Sai Kung, which I find impressive.

Finally, talk to someone if you can. We are in a society that sometimes feels closed, and in such a setting, you hold close to heart matters of great concern to friends and loved ones. It does help to share these issues with those you trust cause as the saying goes, a problem shared is a problem half solved. This may help take some stress off your chest. Remember to stay hydrated by drinking lots of fluids, e.g. water of course (a lot of it) and sports drinks like Gatorade, vitaminwater® and Lucozade.

Sailability Round-Up 航能香港總結 by Kay Rawbone A thank you I want to start this Sailability Round-Up by saying a huge thank you for the amazing tributes, messages, flowers, cards and donations received in memory of Mike who sadly passed away on 3 August 2020.
Also, a huge thank you to everyone who was able to attend Mike's cremation on 27 August. It was attended by around 160 people; friends and work colleagues going back to when we arrived in HK in 2003, those who have supported us and continue to support the Sailability Vision and its Legacy since 2009, representatives and staff from HHYC, RHKYC and ABC, SHK Scallywag Foundation, Charities, NGOs, Schools and local organisations plus many more, and the ''Sailability Family''; our Directors, coach, instructors and lastly our sailors and dedicated volunteers (old and new), without whom Sailability Hong Kong would not be able to do the work it does within the HK Community, Asia and beyond.
All of you being there on the day made it a very special day, and a day Mike would have been proud of. It showed the inclusiveness of what we do and that ''we are ALL the same'' as we continue the Legacy to ''Make Sailing Accessible to EVERYONE'' (see write up on page 64).

Lotus Ho—from Scallywag Foundation Programme Sailor to Scallywag Programme Volunteer Another insight into the rewards of being given the opportunity to learn to sail with Sailability HongKong's, Scallywag Foundation Programme. Lotus is now a regular volunteer helping other sailors within the Programme. Well done and thank you Lotus! Candy, LotusHo's mum, explained, "Lotus Ho is so interested in attending the sail training sessions on Sailability's 'Scallywag Programme'. He wakes up in the early morning for the class and cares for the schedules every time. He has bought himself a pair of gloves to help him with his training. He loves to get out on the sea and takes many beautiful pictures while he's sailing.
She added, "Through the programme, Lotus also learns how to take care of younger teammates. I am so glad that he comes home happy and he has grown up a lot and matured by attending this activity. Thank you for Mike, Kay, and Sun Hung Kai for sponsoring this activity for special need students."
Candy noted, "Training for kids with Autism is very challenging, and the fact they can access this training on the programme is a special gift for their parents. Mr Paul has great patience to teach and share things with the children. I've received complaints from other activities that Lotus had attended in the past, and I could not resolve those problems. But now, I am not worried anymore because of all the love and caring that is shown for my son throughout this activity. Thank you so much."
My name is Lotus ,今年13歲。
Lotus shared, "My name is Lotus, aged 13. I am so blessed to have been able to take part in the Sailability Scallywag Programme last year. Every sail-training session is so precious to me. I treasure the opportunity that allows me to boost my sailing knowledge and experience, not to mention the team spirit that I gain from the sport." He added, "I have developed a sense of satisfaction and confidence every time I finish the training with the team. My disability in sensory integration makes it so hard when coordinating my hands and eyes. Any sport is an arduous task for me, but I enjoy the challenge very much. Words are not enough to describe how much sailing has brought me, turning me into a highly adaptable and disciplined person through a number of practices. I would like to celebrate all the hard work put in by Kay, Mike and Paul, who made every sail training session a safe and fruitful one."

Hong Kong Brain Injury Youth (HKBIY)— Privately funded 'Sailing Taster Day' Thursday 1 October saw a group of five new sailors from the HKBIY join us for their first sail. They were joined by their parents and siblings and two other sailors from the Association who sailed with us last year. As always Sailability Volunteers came out in force—we had 10 join us on that day, to ensure sure all went smoothly with a number of the sailors needing to use the hoist to transfer from their wheelchairs into our dinghies and the Safety Boat, for another first-time experience, at a 'slightly' faster speed!

We were worried about the weather, with the Black Rainstorm Warning from the previous night, but it turned out to be a good weather day, not too hot and we had wind! In fact, it was so good that we were able to provide parents and siblings with the opportunity to try out our dinghies in the afternoon and to ride on the Safety Boat to view their children on the water. For the parents too it was their first time, so a great day had by all. Below are some comments received from the sailors and parents about their first sailing experiences.

Noddy:
This is my second time to go sailing. I enjoy the sport so much, and there are a lot of new friends to be made here.
John:
1 October 2020 is both the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day and, on that day, I attended the Sailing Taster Day, where I met some new friends and coaches. There is so much to learn, including rigging the boat with sails and how to organise things properly after the training. This was my first time ever to experience this! I have fallen in love with this sport and realise it can make people feel light-hearted and relaxed. I hope I can join again in the near future.
John’s mother Sallie:
The day I joined the Sailing Taster Day, I didn't have any expectation. It was a good experience to try out something new (especially for this watersport) even under the bad weather conditions. Thank God everything was in good order on the day—a sunny day with moderate winds, with everyone carrying welcoming, warm smiley faces. No one could believe the event was actually happening as it was arranged prepared and organised earlier this year but postponed till now because of the COVID-19 pandemic. From 8.00 am that morning, the volunteers of Sailability Hong Kong were already at HHYC getting the boats ready that we were to use, a big thank you to all of them! What was so touching was the big surprise of having a homemade cake from Kay! Such a great blessing for Father Choi! It is so true that when joy is shared, it is doubled! We genuinely feel the dedication and caring of Coach Paul—who made our Sailing Taster Day a special one unexpectedly. Thanks to everyone for sharing everyone, I am so much looking forward to the next event!

This time was my very first time to go sailing and powerboating. How exciting it was! Thank you so much for our coaches' guidance. I am sure I will have greater confidence in controlling the boat next time. Looking forward to participating again soon.
Gordon’s mother:
This is my first time coming to HHYC. I could not contain my excitement when I saw so many yachts and boats around the Club! It was a great arrangement to take turns sailing the boats so that we could take rests in between without waiting too long. Special thanks to Ms Kay Rawbone who shared a piece of homemade cake with us, amazingly scrumptious! Of course, not to mention all the great help from the volunteers involved too.
Gordon’s father:
It was indeed a great blessing to be part of the team participating in the event. I would love to give a special thanks to Sailability Hong Kong, HHYC and The Hong Kong Youth Brain Trauma Association who organised this event—which has given my kids great exposure to this meaningful experience.
Father Choi:
Thank God the Sailing Taster Day ended up with fantastic weather and everyone being so happy. Special thanks to Sailability Hong Kong—Kay and Coach Paul, and all the volunteers involved. Every team member had a chance to do a sailing trial and to experience powerboating. We all have had so much fun! With the coach's special arrangement, we were able to view how spectacular a yacht actually was. What a great opportunity to have enjoyed a day out and stay connected to all the lovely people.

The Hong Kong Youth Brain Trauma Association is definitely an organisation that I need to thank. They have held so many great events, including the Sailing Taster Day. My son and I feel honoured to be part of it, and I would say, the opportunity we were given was not only one filled with kindness but was a truly precious experience.
Jikun’s family:
The weather was perfect for sailing. Special thanks to The Hong Kong Youth Brain Trauma Association who organised such a great event for every one of us. There was a rehabilitation shuttle bus transporting us back and forth so that we could enjoy this sailing activity without much hassle. What a marvellous day to learn something new and exciting.
Harry’s father:
We were so blessed to have participated in this event. Special thanks to the volunteer team and coaches' assistance, of course, Ms Kay Rawbone and Coach Paul too, who organised everything so well. The food at the club restaurant was superb with great variety. Thumbs up!
Harry’s mother:
Harry's personality is kind of timid. We could never have imagined he would participate in such an exciting sport like sailing and we have never thought of letting him try anything like this. But thanks to Rita and Father Choi's tremendous encouragement and family support, we finally made up our mind to let Harry a go. We did the registration very last minute. At first, there has been so much fear and reluctance to let Harry sail. Apparently, he felt scared, together with a bit of seasickness, he just tried once without making the second time. When it came closer to the end of the event, Coach Paul requested everyone's help to tidy up the sailing boats. Everyone has done a great job and undeniably; these jobs have increased the confidence of all the participants. Overall speaking, the event would not be such a success without everyone's hard work. A big thank you to everyone!
Harry:
This is my first time to go sailing. I hope I can go powerboating next time.
Marco:
I felt so frightened to go sailing on my own for the first time. But soon after the coaching by my instructor, I felt so much more relaxed and comfortable. I realised that if I wanted to get the most from the sports, I needed to learn how to take the helm, control the boat, get to know it. There is no way to stay closer to the ocean than by sailing. What an unforgettable experience!

Rita & Man Kin:
There has been a long wait for this Sailing Taster Day to come. With countless postponements of the event, and having been cooped up for months, I had no hesitation in getting out on the water again! Mother Nature did a great job—the weather was perfect with a cool autumn breeze. Thanks to Sailability Hong Kong, without their excellent arrangement, there was no way we could enjoy such a lovely day out on the water, not only sailing but also powerboating for family members who came along. Coach Paul is undoubtedly a passionate person who let Man Kin and Jia Wei to try out powerboating. Clear-blue skies with white clouds—this is what we should compose for an instagrammable panoramic picture!
A special thanks to Mr Lee Chi Chung, who subsidised this event's operation and administrative costs, which played a huge role in contributing to the success of the event. Thanks also to Kay who has been the early riser to make such a fabulous cake for us, not to mention her being so hands-on when getting things organised for disabled sailors—making their sailing experience such a carefree one. Coach Paul's dedication and passion are overwhelming. For sure if not because of his drive and planning, and calling for support of volunteers, the event would not be such a success. Thank you so much, Paul!

Thank you so much for all the volunteers who sacrificed the family time on the Mid-Autumn Festival Day for the sake of sailing at this event, getting each one of us a chance to sail one-on-one. And thank you so much for your unconditional contributions. It's hard to put into words exactly how much sailing has changed me as a whole, my life philosophy and my values. Be bold to go beyond your comfort zone. Stay adventurous to new things while "being present".

At a recent webinar hosted by the Asian Paralympics Committee, Massimo Dighe, Para World Sailing Manager, World Sailing, talked about how to get more people with disability and other challenges out on the water and what is needed to host a Paralympic Development Programme. You may remember we were the first to do this in Asia in 2017—well done HK. Then came this wonderful accolade from Massimo, "Sailability Hong Kong is the most advanced in Asia".

Jelik 7 claimed the honours in the Regatta ahead of JazzCN-Sailing Team. Footloose took the honours amongst the four J80s contesting the Typhoon Series with JiveTeam Triton 2nd and Jelik 7- Hebe Dragons 3rd.
Most managed to cope with the one- to two-metre swells, although the Swan 53, Athena, saw its colourful kite disintegrate and almost lost crew overboard. Despite this, it still took line honours in HKPN A but finished 3rd on handicap in the Typhoon Series. Crossing the line 2nd, behind Athena, XT took line honours in Race 1 of the Regatta as well as handicap honours in both along with Amaze 2nd in both and LoTech 3rd in the Regatta.
Finally, Jibulai took line and handicap honours in HKPN B with La Vida Loca 2nd and Scrumpy 3rd in both events. It took a surprisingly patient race management team to await the finish of Ma Cherie 2e some 36 minutes after the penultimate boat.

The schedule was two geometric races for all classes. The windward mark A1 for IRC A, B, C and Sportsboats was set at a distance of 1.4nm and A2 for HKPN A, B and J80s at 1.1nm, both at 90 degrees with offset marks. Away on schedule, at noon, were the 10 boats in IRC A and B, with nine in the Regatta on three laps of the long course.

Unfortunately, Ambush became entangled in a fishing net and was forced to retire. Meanwhile Alpha+ raced around the circuit, finishing seven minutes ahead of Zannekin.
Juggerknot in IRC B had a very close finish under kite with Daydream just managing to find enough room at the pin end to squeeze ahead by one second. 48

A second race followed on the same courses with IRC C and Sportsboats away first at 1335. IRC A and B followed 20 minutes later, but both Quest and Zannekin were caught on course side (OCS) and obliged to restart. HKPN A and the J80s followed with HKPN B the final start at 1405.

Fortunately the breeze held, easing slightly at times but still gusting 18. This still resulted in carnage on the course with numerous broaches. Finishes were also close with seconds separating many, including Kingsman and Juggerknot in their second race.
In IRC A, Alpha+ won both geometric races as well as overall in the Port Shelter Regatta and Typhoon Series. Blue Bunny finished 2nd in both races as well as in the Regatta and the Series, while Zannekin finished 3rd in both races and 3rd in the Regatta losing out to Ambush for 3rd in the Typhoon Series.
Daydream in IRC B won both races as well as the Port Shelter Regatta and the Typhoon Series. Juggerknot finished 2nd in Race 6 and 3rd in Race 7 for 2nd overall in the Typhoon Series, while Rampage finished 3rd in Race 6 and 2nd in Race 7 for 4th overall in the Typhoon Series and 2nd in Races 2 and 3 and 2nd overall in the Regatta. Kingsman finished 3rd the Regatta and the Typhoon Series.

This is the second of three articles which follow the voyage of Mark and Juliet Ashton aboard their 40 ft catamaran Ate, from Hong Kong to a new home in Langkawi. In this article, we join Ate in Sabah as she continues her journey down the western coast of Borneo.
Our night-time arrival off the western tip of Borneo meant either heaving-to until daylight to visit the many pretty anchorages in the North-West, or carrying-on. Carry-on we did, now motoring to arrive at Gaia Island off Kota Kinabalu at first light. We were immediately struck by the change in the shape of the local boats. Gone were the graceful bancas with their inboard engines. Here we saw light fibreglass speedboats, bows high in the water and propelled by Japanese outboards. We rounded Gaia Island and entered Sutera Harbour Marina, where we were met by the marina staff, who were determined to see our insurance certificate before letting us tieup. This seems to be a feature of some marinas in Asia. As many cruisers find out, getting insurance, even just third-party, can be difficult for those with mature yachts no matter how well maintained. We have a 30-year noclaims history which seems not to count for much in the world of marine cover.
Sutera Harbour, like most Malaysian marinas we saw, was part of a government-backed land development deal. In this case, swish hotels and nice pools were the order of the day. Prices are very reasonable compared to Europe, and we enjoyed the various comforts. The lack of breeze inside the complex made life aboard uncomfortable without a/c, which it seems was a common feature of the boats here. With the help of Alfons Grieb, a marina resident and longserving past treasurer of our home yacht club, HHYC, we tracked down one of the few places still selling the old window style a/c units. Setting this up over a forward hatch soon did the trick. The added benefit was lowering the humidity from 95+ to 65 or so, into the zone marked “Comfort” on our multi-tasking barometer/hygrometer, something we had not seen in a long while.

The clearing-in process for Sabah involved a trip to the customs and immigration offices in Kota Kinabalu and then a 15 plus km trip north to the new port near Sepuk Sepanger, where the Marine Department or Jabatan Laut had been relocated. We have found the officials in Malaysia to be helpful and efficient, which makes the arcane shenanigans of the whole CIQ process for pleasure boats easier to bear. We were a bit put off at the thought of a forty-minute taxi ride but were advised to install the Grab taxi-hailing app which is ubiquitous in Malaysia. Car hire is also affordable at 70-100RM per day. We made our first trip courtesy of a tour with Alfons and the second in a hired car as part of a day’s drive up to Sandakan and the base of Mt. Kinabalu. We had previously climbed Mt. Kinabalu and were content this time to sightsee by car. The giant Rafflesia plants were not in evidence, but we found a spectacular waterfall where we swam, pummelled by its rough water and delighted to be cold!

We were joined at KK by a Hong Kong friend Bridget Chan, who had sailed the leg from Hong Kong to Subic with us. Bridget was keen to see the Borneo coast down to Kuching and possibly the Anambas Islands, time permitting. At this point, I made a mistake that would cause a sleepless night later, reasoning that since Bridget had cleared into Malaysia at the airport, we would only need to add her to the crew list if and when we were to depart together to Indonesia.
Our trip down the coast was to be swift on account of wanting to get around Singapore in mid-May at the latest. We also planned an intermediate rendezvous at Miri to pick up another friend, Rob Cook and to wave him goodbye in Kuching at the end of his short holiday. My reasoning on crew lists would also be applied to Rob, whom I figured didn’t count at all given his plans to both arrive and depart from Sarawak.
The immediate coast south of KK and the nearby off-lying islands were attractive, and we stopped at pretty Tiga Island, site of the Survivor TV series. Tiga is a National Park and under Bridget’s urging (we have to blame someone) we hiked up a slippery, mud bespattered timber walkway to the cold volcanic mud pools. These looked and felt hideous, cool, slimy with some scratchy bits and slightly sulphurous. “Type B fun” probably describes it best, but it was somehow pleasant

to be suspended in this cool, oily slush and surrounded by tropical jungle. The walk back down the slippery boardwalk proved much trickier than going up, and we were very glad to reach the beach, rushing past the “beware of stingrays” sign to jump in heedless and sluice the mud off.

From Tiga, we made our way south towards the autonomous island state of Labuan, situated just off the Bay of Brunei. The Sultan of Brunei had recently announced the imposition of cutting off hands and stoning in accordance with Sharia traditions. Whilst we didn’t plan any thievery or extramarital stuff, this crossed Brunei off our visiting list. We entered Victoria Harbour with lightning crackling around just as dark was falling, but fortunately with no wind or rain. We felt our way in and, revealed in the daylight of the next morning; we found ourselves anchored off a clean beach by the maritime museum. Going ashore that evening, we dined at a Japanese restaurant run by a man from Hong Kong, such a small world.
The next day we visited the mall, shopping for duty-free grog, as any sailing boat in this area should do. We did well on the duty-free beer and rum but alas were hasty with the choice of wine which we were to regret at leisure travelling in Malaysia and Indonesia. Our next duty-free shopping was to be much later, nearly 1200 miles away in Langkawi. The maritime museum in Labuan was small but informative, and we enjoyed strolling through the grassy and treeshaded playing fields near the marina, so reminiscent of England.
From Labuan, we planned to proceed directly to Miri, just inside Sarawak, passing through the offshore oil fields en-route. These fields of flaring rigs are each guarded by large vessels, standing like terriers we thought, placing themselves between you and the rig and slowly turning as you sail by. Alfons had told us in KK about a potential overnight stop in a partially constructed, but abandoned marina at Jerudong off the Brunei coast. This large rock breakwater structure was shown on our Navionics chart. The breakwaters enclose a small island, behind which anchoring was possible in 15 ft or so and affords perfect shelter.
We arrived a few hours before dark and decided to stop; we were taken by how clean and tranquil it was; there wasn’t another boat in sight. We left early the next morning like illicit campers, making it past the headland at Miri later in the day. Here we anchored just off the beach, too dark to chance an unfamiliar marina entrance. During the wee hours, the breeze switched, bringing us downwind of a large smoke plume which smelt of bushfire. We were later told this was more likely to be underground peat burning, a hazard of deforested terrain. In 54

Miri is a handy spot with an airport connection and lively town. We enjoyed the Malaysian and Pakistani “plastic chair” restaurants and marvelled at the elaborate decorations of the Chinese temple. Bridget was busy capturing snippets of all this via her GoPro, and like her previous snaps of the trip, these short videos were both great fun for us and to share with friends at home. Robert Cook joined us at Miri, and we set off the next day after a brief visit to the opticians to check Juliet’s eye, these worries are always acute when you plan to be far from assistance. The speck on her eye was pronounced OK, but with no contact lenses to be worn until it disappeared.
We had been lucky sailing down the coast in the transition season to benefit from alternate sea and land breezes which reached 10-15 kts and meant that we were able to sail most of the way. Our plan was to reach the coast of Kuching with a day/night/day hop of about 280Nm to give some time in Kuching for sightseeing before Rob’s holiday was to end. Near the Daro Peninsula, we encountered a powerful thunderstorm which lasted several hours and found tidal streams strong enough to kick up a short and uncomfortable chop. We plugged to windward, making slow progress

We made our way around Palau Lakei, a few miles west of the Sungai Sarawak. We were now in an area of large rivers and big tides, with two or three-knot streams. We chatted with the Rangers at Lakei, who lived in fairly spartan huts while on duty and clambered up to a hermit’s cave and pool. Later we swam off a small beach in the now warm sea, having been told that we were “probably” OK for crocodiles, but on no account to swim once in the Sungai (river) Sarawak proper.
We set off with the tide the next day to ride the stream up to Marina Kuching, built on a new island a short Grab ride from Kuching riverfront. The new tidal barrier meant that the riverside anchorage at Kuching was no longer accessible to yachts. The “Pilot” (Stephen and Elaine Morgan’s Imray publication and the “community edit” notes on Navionics) warned of the dangers of large floating islands of Nippa Palm carried in the stream. We saw these and lots of other debris in the swirling chocolate water, which glistened with silt and sand. The marina entrance in Kuching is tricky on anything other than slack stream, and so we timed our trip up the river accordingly. It being a Sunday, there were no staff on duty, but two people from a nearby boat turned out to take our lines. It soon became clear that they were trying to rig lines across the docks to prevent a nearby floating island from entering the pens and explained that while they were “boat sitting” for the owner, this island of debris had been trapped before and generated a strong force on the boat.

The marina was a bit of sorry sight, of moisture, darkened and broken planks and some derelict, apparently abandoned yachts. Crocodile warnings were prominently posted. Borneo is hot and humid at this time of year, but there were no berths available with electricity (only half of the units were working). The marina showers were lamentable with nowhere to place one’s clothes. This is not uncommon we found, and it begs the question of who designs this stuff? Certainly not a person who ever uses a shower!
Keen to see Kuching, we grabbed a “Grab” as soon as we were tied up and set off in the darkness, soon finding ourselves absorbed in the sights, sounds and tastes of the waterfront. Fort Margherita of Rajah Brooke fame, the new state parliament building, and the highly ornamental cable bridge set along the attractive boulevard was all a bustle with people strolling, eating and drinking.
A slightly less tranquil prospect had been presented in a casual dockside conversation earlier that evening. The skipper of a neighbouring catamaran related a story of one of his crew being arrested at the airport and detained for a fortnight for trying to leave Sarawak without first having checked into the state. The crew member had joined the boat at Labuan. The skipper explained that checking crew into and out of each state

Monday morning arrived and with it, officialdom, who came to the boat at 0830 and requested that we present ourselves at the office before going anywhere (no time to mention our evening trip into Kuching). With some trepidation, I confessed to the situation regarding Bridget. Still, it seemed that at this stage, they were happy to stamp us into Sarawak regardless, and all would be regularised. Whew!

We were keen to travel into the interior to visit the longhouses and see the Orangutangs, translating delightfully as “people of the jungle”. After saying goodbye to Rob, Juliet found and signed us up for an excellent tour. Our Dayak guide was a stocky character who, with obvious pride, showed us the extraordinary range of plant life in the jungle and the varied and interesting diet of the indigenous people. All manner of food, drinks, medicines, utensils, clothes and of course the buildings and furniture were made from the rainforest. We were to learn of the destruction of so much of this habitat for logging and palm oil from Clare Rewcastle-Brown’s book, The Sarawak Report. This remarkable book chronicles the 1MDB financial scandal and the role of Sarawak’s governor in logging Sarawak.

We very much enjoyed our time in Kuching, and the wonderful Brook family exhibition at the Brooke castle museum made up for the disappointing performance of the “closed for repairs” state-run museums, a poor show for a rich state. We were, however, sans aircon and unable to swim...Just as important, the Anambas islands were glinting over the horizon of our imagination. And so, we retraced our steps back down river with a fast ebb past the Chinese temple and back to the sea once more. 58

CLUB UPDATES
As I am sitting down to write this in late October, Hong Kong is experiencing truly fabulous sailing conditions. The temperatures are dipping below 30 degrees, and the north-east monsoon has filled in nicely. Every day the Hong Kong observatory forecast reads virtually the same: clear skies, and force 4-5, with just an occasional tropical revolving storm to keep us on our toes. The challenges brought on by Covid19 have affected each and every one of us in some manner, some more than others, and the yacht club is no different, but owing to the ceaseless hard work of the staff we continue to have access to a recreational playground that is the envy of many. A ‘staycation’ is not such a bad thing, and the usage around the club has born evidence of this. Of course, there has been the constantly evolving challenge of complying with the current government social distancing and gathering restrictions, and this has wreaked havoc on club events from; the clubhouse, the sail training centre, to the dinghy and yacht racing. However through it all, we have all tried to remain positive, and keep the club functioning.
ADAM GLENDINNING Rear Commodore—Sailing
Government Restrictions caused a long delay in the completion of the 2020 Typhoon series. The postponed races were not due to typhoons, but from HAB mandated restrictions on sporting venues. As these restrictions were lifted, we were able to piggy back the final three races of the Typhoon series, with the annual Port Shelter Regatta in late September. Over the weekend, 50 yachts competed in the Typhoon series, the number being reflected of a healthy turnout. Under the current social distancing restrictions, it was impossible to hold either the 24 hour regatta or Bart’s Bash, so with deep regret both these races were cancelled for 2020. This was regrettable given how much both of these mean to the club, and also to Sailability, particularly with the recent and untimely passing of Sailability’s Co-founder Mike Rawbone. The 2020 Open Dinghy Regatta scheduled for the spring, was postponed due to Covid19 restrictions, and has taken over the date scheduled for the 24 hour regatta in late October. An amazing turnout of over 200 dinghies is expected, including for the first time in Hong Kong, a foiling class. The Monsoon Winter series also kicks off in October, and with the seasonal champagne sailing conditions brought on by the NE monsoon, the series is being eagerly anticipated. Of course we have entered a new ‘normal’ of hosting races where there is no prize giving, or formal post-race parties, but it is enough to be out on the water racing. One of the positives coming from COVID19 has been the prolific use of Zoom. The club has taken advantage of this new technology and over the summer months, when most racing was cancelled, we implemented a series of webinars and seminars. These have been a rousing success and we are continuing these events throughout the fall. I’d like to also express a big thanks to the racing office, (Rob Allen, and Queenie Ho), but in particular Lesley Anderson, for spearheading and driving this education program. Please check the club website for the latest seminar subjects, and dates. Those club members that have their own yachts have been able to take full advantage of the wonderful cruising weather Hong Kong has had this year and with the slow relaxation of sporting and social restrictions, the club will be better able to organise sailaway events for the more leisurely minded. In December, the Boxing Day cruise is a social and relaxed event for both sail, and power boats, and on New Year’s Day the club will hopefully be able to host its annual barbeque to welcome the New Year. We have all learning to adapt to the restrictions that Covid19 imposes, but it does nothing to diminish the playground we have at our doorstep at Hebe Haven. So let’s get put and enjoy the ocean. Stay safe, and see you around the club, or out on the water.

Bash

CLUB UPDATES
I want to start with a thank you for the tremendous efforts of the Club’s Marine Office team over the past year. Although we have been impacted by the unprecedented pandemic virus, with the cooperation and concerted efforts of all members, we have been able to implement appropriate preventative measures smoothly. Despite these challenges, Hebe has kept on continuously improving various facilities including levelling the imbalances in the pontoons, buoy inspections, and overseeing the repair works to make the piles more secure. OpsCom will continue implementing additional projects, including pontoon work and longterm pile replacement—to provide a safer environment for members despite the increasing severity of adverse weather and tidal surges.
EDDY LO Rear Commodore—Operations
OpsCom is also making great strides at further enhancing recordkeeping in respect of vessel documentation. We are working together with all vesselowning members to make this a reality. If anyone has not already provided their vessel license and insurance information, please do so as soon as possible. According to the club facilities rental contracts and relevant bye-laws, owners must provide valid vessel license and insurance details before using any facility at the Club. This is important to ensure that vessel owners, other club members and the Club, are suitably covered in case of any accidents. Based on the byelaws, members who fail to provide such documents will be charged an additional $1,500 monthly and may have their contract terminated if they cannot provide a valid vessel license and insurance for their vessel on a club mooring/hardstand. To reiterate: to prevent additional charges and potentially losing your mooring, the Committee urges any members who have not yet submitted the relevant documents to do so as soon as is practicable.

Fitting send off for Mike Members and family pay tribute to a shining star of Sailability 再見 Mike—香港航能裡璀璨的星星 by Paul Arkwright On 27 August 2020 a remembrance ceremony to celebrate Mike Rawbone's life was held at Cape Collinson.
Thirty-three families joined the ceremony online via Zoom, and many more in person at the event presided over by a Scottish clergywoman. The proceedings began with a tribute to Mike from his many grandchildren—remembering him among many other things (sorry, I couldn’t type that fast) for being the best grandfather ever, teaching them how to use chopsticks, taking them out on sailing boats and making sure they wore life jackets so they could float…he would always be their shining star.
Rob Allen, STC Manager, then read “A tribute to our Dad” from Mike’s children: Rachel, Joe and David who remembered how he taught them how to fix things, how to fix everything in fact, how to drive a car and how to sail...in their eyes, he was always selfless and patient in his approach to everything.
Rachel, Joe
Sailability then gave a tribute to Mike in Cantonese; I’m sure Mike caught more of that than I did, as Zoom was dropping out a bit!
The conversation then paused for a few moments of reflection Kay’s life and how empty that is now without Mike. (But we know, although we can’t bring Mike back, Kay will never be alone at HHYC).
Then they played the song, “Let them shine”, which is a moving and upbeat song that has been put together by differently-abled persons. Kay shared the link with me when I was asking the disabled sailors about the lift planned for them at the Club, here’s the link: https://youtu.be/o0w7z-MXLPM
Mike was remembered for all his outstanding work in Sailability, great work which will continue… then a brief “adios old friend” was also read out on behalf of Stu Pryke, followed by a moment of silent reflection.
Mike
After the Lord’s Prayer, people placed single white roses, handed out by Kay, on top of Mike’s coffin, as a last tribute to a life led to the full, before he went heaven.
