Shannon’s September Snippet (Say that 10 times fast)

W

ell, here we are - I can’t believe summer is waning and kids are in school. I was waxing nostalgic for September (fall is my favorite time of year) and thought I’d kick off the newsletter with some September song lyrics. Some of you may have caught my moon phase references above (waning and waxing). This is what comes of paying attention to what my kids are learning! And speaking of learning, I’ve got two things for you, one fun and one that will change your business for the better, if you let it. First, the fun: Apparently September is a popular theme for song writers: http://www. thecavanproject.com/20-songs-aboutseptember/ . From Plain White T’s to Carol King, Earth, Wind and Fire and Frank Sinatra, September has inspired musicians.

Second, more “good stuff”!

For those of us in the real estate world, back to school generally signals a bit of a breather from the crazy summer months; hopefully you found time to relax over Labor Day (instead of laboring) and to start thinking about how you want to end this year in your business and start the new one. It is never too early to start planning for next year’s success. As we move into the fall market and prepare not only for winter, but for next year as well, the importance of future planning cannot be underestimated. In this Business Insider article entitled, “Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail” the author emphasizes the fact that, “One of the common reasons given for business failure is the absence of a workable marketing plan.” He even goes on to discuss that marketing plans have two main elements – (1) Goals and (2) Strategies to achieve them. M O N T H LY B I T E S Let’s talk food wine It’s all about the EXPERIENCE Even if you are not a dyed-in-the-wool oenophile (that means wine connoisseur for you non wine drinkers), Bin 105 is worth checking out. I know, because I took one for the team and visited - just so I could write this review. Oh, the sacrifices we make for good newsletter content! Right by the viaduct on 8th and P Streets Bin 105 is a hidden gem. Steve, the proprietor, was a wine distributor for many years. He recognized that most wine shops stocked the same wines; mostly from large vintners. He saw an opportunity to create a more personalized wine experience, providing inventory from a wide range of small batch vineyards and matching them to each individual’s taste. So, he jumped at the chance to take over a 750 square foot space next door to his current location, and when his model proved successful, he expanded into his current space. Bin 105 provides a specialty foods and a curated wine experience like no other in Lincoln; great for closing gifts, for

pairing wine with your dinner party menu or for just trying out a glass of wine as you wander around the shops in the Haymarket. Over the last several years the shop has expanded its in-store offering, so you can enjoy a glass of wine on location. There are high-tech refrigerated containers with several bottles of wine on tap, so you can try a pour from several different bottles, in a variety of sizes. The self-served wine is very convenient and helps in deciding what wines you may want to purchase. All in all, the experience at Bin 105 is top notch, personal, fun and not to be missed. I’m sure your friends, family and clients would enjoy it as well, so get yourself on down there and raise a glass to fall! Michael Jordan, Ruth Bader Ginsburg , Serena Williams, John McCain. When I think of excellence, these images appear. In their chosen fields, they are considered outstanding, but they are not perfect. They all claim failures or defeats. Michael Jordan was once cut from his high school’s WE ARE WHAT WE REPEATEDLY DO. varsity basketball team. Ruth Bader Ginsburg graduated at the top of her Columbia Law School class but had a hard time finding a EXCELLENCE THEN, IS NOT AN ACT, job. Serena has withstood many losses and injuries, and John BUT A HABIT. - ARISTOTLE McCain suffered several political losses. Despite their failures, these people all continued to excel because of their commitment to and expectation of excellence. They are not ok with status quo or good enough. They are all known for zealously practicing their craft and continually seeking improvement opportunities. Their excellence is fueled by their relentless passion for learning and achievement. Achieving excellence requires commitment. HomeServices of Nebraska is committed to providing excellent service to our agents, customers, and employees. We know excellence does not just happen which is why we value the pursuit and are committed to a culture that seeks and develops opportunities for learning, practicing, and continuous improvement. As Vince Lombardi once said, “perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.”

THE REALTOR®

TRADEMARK

Two Strikes and You’re Out

Here’s the Top 5 Things You Need to Know

REALTOR® = Member of NAR

A REALTOR® is a member of the National Association of REALTORS®. The term REALTOR® should never be used as a substitute for "real estate agent." The REALTOR® trademarks include: REALTOR® REALTORS® REALTOR-ASSOCIATE® The REALTOR® block "R" logo The REALTOR® marks let people know that you are more than just a real estate practitioner: you adhere to a strict Code of Ethics that protects clients, the public, and other real estate agents. The term REALTOR® is not only a trademark owned by NAR and protected by federal law, it's a valuable membership benefit that distinguishes members from other real estate licensees.

Members can use the REALTOR® trademarks, with limitations Members may use the REALTOR® marks only in the context of identifying themselves as members of NAR. To maintain the value of the marks, it's important that they be recognized by the public as identifiers of NAR members, and never used generically to denote a vocation or a business. Members are licensed to use the marks only in connection with their real estate business and in connection with the place of business with which their membership is associated.

Non-members may not use the REALTOR® marks

Non-members are never allowed to use the REALTOR® trademarks in reference to or in connection with their businesses or themselves. Certain nominal uses of the marks are permissible. For example, newspapers, magazines, or radio or television programs may use the marks to accurately identify an individual as a member of NAR or in reference to a Member Board.

Design standards for REALTOR® marks must be followed The preferred form of the term is REALTOR®—in all caps, and using the registered trademark symbol. If using the symbol isn't possible, then the next best form is in all caps: REALTOR. The REALTOR® block 'R' logo consists of a letter R set in Futura Typeface on a sharply contrasting rectangular background to form a block “R” with the term REALTOR® centered underneath. The rectangular block and the term REALTOR® centered under that block must be the same contrasting color.

The Commission is now taking a “two strike” policy on non-compliant ads. First notice will be a warning with a note to correct or pull the noncompliant ad, if further violations are discovered a formal complaint will be filed.

Marketing with Football: the Dos and Dont’s While football season is quickly approaching, it’s important to be aware what you can and can’t use when marketing during this exciting time! It is a violation of Nebraska law to use someone else’s name for commercial gain without that person’s permission. There was recently an article in the newspaper regarding Husker Refuse’s use of his name. We do not want to be next. We recommend steering clear of any use of his name in any form. See article below:

The REALTOR® marks can be used on the internet & in marketing

politics/city-hall-company-discovers-using-

In usernames, members are allowed to use the REALTOR marks only to indicate membership in NAR by using the marks with a member’s name or with the legal name of a member broker’s real estate business.

In usernames, email addresses, and domain names, the REALTOR® marks do not need to be separated from a member’s name or real estate business name with punctuation, as they do elsewhere. The marks may be used on merchandise such as T-shirts and ball caps, as long as the item includes the member’s name or firm name. However, the marks may not be used in institutional advertising by franchisors.
