King at Worshiping Ceremony for a Guardian Spirit

On Sunday morning 7th July, His Majesty the King privately attended a worshiping ceremony for Phra Chai Mongkhon’s spirit shrine located at the Klai Kangwon Palace. The ceremony is held by the royal command of His Majesty when in residence at the palace. At the shrine, His Majesty lit candles and joss sticks at the altar laid with objects offered in worship at the Phra Chai Mongkhon Statue. Court Brahmins then played traditional instruments while His Majesty sprinkled lustral water on the objects of worship. This was followed by the Chief Brahmin reading out verses of worship. The shrine was built by King Rama VII following his dream one night during his first visit to the Palace in 1928. In the dream the King met a lady with four arms pronouncing herself as guardian spirit of the palace, and indicating her intention to protect the king and queen during their stay. The next day King Rama VII ordered a royal artist to sketch a design and send it to Italy for an artist to create a marble statue of the guardian spirit.

2014 King’s Cup Elephant Polo;

Packing It’s Trunks and Moving to Bangkok This year Hua Hin has lost the King’s Cup Elephant Polo as the 2014 tournament is moving to the Siam Polo Park at VR Sports Club in Bangkok. The popularity of the tournament is cited as the reason for this move. The event is being staged from August 28th - 31st and promises to have more nail-biting action both on and off the field. The four day festival will have something for everyone including an impressive opening parade, Children’s Day, Ladies Day and wide a range of fun elephant related activities for the whole family.

Fundraising from last year’s event has been donated to a number of projects in Thailand including supporting research and clinics using elephants in therapy sessions for children living with autism; building the first elephant hospital in Krabi in the southern part of Thailand and donating a gantry to help lame elephants stand to the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre (TECC).

Last year’s event which had 16 teams encompassing over 50 players, including Thai supermodels, professional horse polo players, the New Zealand All-Blacks rugby team and Thailand’s famous transgender cabaret team Miss Tiffany’s was a far cry from the small two teamed event back when it started in 2001.

A total of 50 street elephants will take part in this year’s tournament, during which they are well fed, provided with a native forest environment, and receive essential vitamin supplements, full veterinary checks and care for the duration of the event. Street life and ‘unemployment’ can be tough for an elephant, walking through crowded tourist areas and busy roads for ten hours a night, forced to rest during the day on small green spaces within the cities, often without shade and water. The King’s Cup schedule is deliberately designed to give these elephants rest and relaxation on a scale they are never afforded in their ‘normal’ lives.

Over USD 750,000 has been raised and donated to projects that better the lives of Thailand’s wild and domesticated elephant population.

For more information on the 13th Annual King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament, please visit www.anantaraelephantpolo. com

The annual tournament, now in its thirteenth year, has become one of the biggest charitable events in SE Asia.

Also as part of the worshiping ceremony, His Majesty commanded performances of a theatrical folk play called Lakhon Chatri, and the Lakhon Ling or monkey’s show, both of which are popular kinds of entertainment.

7 This Month in History

Interview : Rick Erdos, General Manager of Hilton Hua Hin Resort & Spa 1. What is your personal and professional background? I have been an International hotelier travelling around the world for around 10 years. I am from Australia, finishing hospitality in Australia in the 80’s then I just worked in hotels. My first time in a General Manager position was back in 1993, still very young but experienced.

1. The first Olympic games opened in Berlin, Germany, 1936

Living in Australia and working with the Radisson Hotels and then from Australia I worked in Shanghai China then to the Middle East. I worked with another company called Okwood in Manila, there is an Okwood in Bangkok and then to my first job with Hilton. I enjoyed the Middle East a lot, I enjoyed Bahrain, Oman in Muscat and certainly Hua Hin is such a lovely location.

2. Thomas Edison received a patent for his mimeograph, 1876

3. The first professional American football game was played in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. For Latrobe’s team, he hired a substitute quarterback named John Brallier for $10 in expense money, making him the game’s first professional player, 1895.

2. The hotel changed ownership recently, who are the new owners and what are the plans? The new owners are called the Saha Unions Public Company. This is the first hotel in Thailand that they have purchased to widen their business interests and in real estate hospitality. I took over in the middle of June. With the new ownership we are discussing plans for renovations and to upgrade the hotel. But at this stage just general idea nothing is concrete so far. We are hoping that maybe in the next quarter there will be some more plans and updates. We already have completed some renovations in the rooms. We have also renovated the lobby and moved the Sky Bar over to the other side; it will be an indoor and outdoor bar and really quite unique. We thought it was a little bit restricted having only outdoor areas and now that the rainy season is coming we can also sit inside bar; it’s multipurpose. The lounge used to be upstairs and now it on the first floor so the public can use the upstairs all day. I am very happy with these changes. 3. Compared to the other places you have worked in, how do you find Hua Hin as a tourist destination?

4. Isaac Merrit Singer was granted a patent for his sewing machine, 1851

It’s a great beach side resort town. I’ve been here for over three months and I enjoy it very much. The potential for Hua Hin is really unlimited. It would be good if we can see infrastructure growing a little bit and have some more tourists’ attractions like the theme park down the road. Shopping centres are also getting involved. Last weekend we were full and I didn’t go far, looking outside was crazy. 4. Do you feel that the political situation in Thailand will have an impact on the coming high season?

5. The first National Labor Congress was held in Baltimore in 1866.

When the initial changes were announced we definitely saw an impact into June and at the beginning of July but we are starting to see more positive signs now. So for us we are still very confident of a good high season. Many of our regular guests stay virtually every year and are booking again to come back. We are pretty confident of a good season. The signs show that we are starting to

get back to normal. We just have to hope that international governments will start to relax and see the bigger view. I think this is starting to happen, so we are pretty comfortable.

environment that Hua Hin has, that’s what people like.

5. What can you tell us about Chinese Tourism in Thailand?

We have a combination of old management and new management, so the newer team is working with the old staff to understand the history of the hotel. We also have some new management staff that moved from the Hilton in Bangkok. We are now integrating each other’s experiences.

We think this is a big potential for us, we see a little bit of Chinese business, but we are definitely start to get a feeling that enquiries for next year will be very strong. Hilton is a big brand known in China so attracting Chinese tourism to the Hilton in Thailand is a bit easier for us. Our restaurants cater for the Chinese taste, including breakfast. We want to build this up and are planning for Chinese menus to be placed in every room. So yes we are very comfortable about Chinese business. 6. What do you believe are the main attractions in Hua Hin? Golf definitely the number one, for men. Couples enjoy the beach, the markets, the seafood restaurants and just the relaxed

7. How do you promote good teamwork amongst the staff?

Integration is going really well; we still stick to the principles about how to run a hotel, good service, high energy and enthusiasm. There are many returning guests; we have guests who have been coming here for 15 years from Europe who often stay for 4-6 weeks. The goal is for the old staff to recognise them and the new staff to try to enhance their experiences. There have been a few new managers over the last 6 months. Teamwork is very important. To engage and get the same message we basically communicate once or twice a day in formal meetings with the staff to discuss issues and hotel matters. Every topic that’s important is raised amongst the team with continual communication both verbally and by email; there are no secrets. We have an online system for guests’ feedback so the management team has access to that feedback and checks it all the time. Continual communication is very important for us. The management staff walks around the hotel and is not just office bound. 8. What is your favorite place is Hua Hin so far? I love the beach and I walk there most days and I enjoy many restaurants. At the Hilton I enjoy our 17th floor, La Grappa is a very high quality restaurant and for a casual pub meal we go to Buffalo. We have many places at the hotel so I cannot mention them all. We would like to wish Rick an enjoyable stay in Hua Hin, the Hilton is in good hands. HUA HIN TODAY, August 2014

10 News TAT Launches New Campaigns for 2015 In a move to boost the economy, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has announced campaigns and marketing plans for next year with a revenue target of Bt2.2 trillion from local and international visitors.

Of the Bt1.4 trillion expected to be earned from foreign visitors, Bt747 billion or 53.3 per cent is expected to come from Asia, followed by Bt650 billion or 46.5 per cent from Europe and the rest from other markets, especially the United States.

TAT governor Thawatchai Arunyik said the authority expected up to 28.9 million foreign visitors next year - increasing this year’s projection of about 26 million foreign tourists by 13 per cent - and hoped to boost this year’s target of foreign-exchange revenue by 15 per cent to Bt1.4 trillion.

TAT is also setting up strategies to draw big spenders from second-tier cities in Europe such as Stuttgart and Munich in Germany and smaller cities in France. It is also eyeing alternative countries such as Morocco, Brazil, Chile, Poland, Hungary, Belgium and the Czech Republic.

TAT is also hoping to encourage 148 million trips by local travellers next year, which should generate up to Bt800 billion in revenue. Next year’s projection is increased by 9.5 per cent from this year’s. TAT has also lined up action plans and strategies for local and international markets under the long-running “Amazing Thailand” campaign. The agency is also preparing new tourism products to attract foreigners, such as “Thainess” and the “Thai way of living”, in addition to promoting the country’s natural beauty.

“TAT will hold roadshows in these countries and will work with airlines and hotels. Our targets are high-spending visitors such as honeymooners and health-conscious tourists,” Thawatchai said. The first campaign promotes attractions in new destinations, such as the timelessness of Lampang, the flowers of Phetchabun, Buri Ram’s ancient pagodas, the cool weather in Loei, Ratchaburi’s art, fruit in Chantaburi and Trang’s cuisine. The second campaign focuses on flowers, encouraging people to visit different provinces in different months.

Private sector optimistic about 3-4% economic growth

Head of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) General Prayuth Chanocha has given an explanation of Thailand’s situation to the international community, saying that the NCPO has put efforts into creating a better understanding through every possible channel. The explanation came after the European Union (EU) had expressed its concern over the situation in Thailand and considered revising cooperation with Thailand as part of its call for general elections at the earliest opportunity. General Prayuth said that the NCPO understands the demands of the EU. However, he said, holding an election under the present circumstances would only lead the country back to a cycle of conflict, continued rampant corruption among those holding political power, exposure to potential terrorism, and the use of weapons between conflicting groups.

supports efforts to end human trafficking.

He believes that most Thai people understand these problems and do not want the country to face such a situation. They have, therefore, called on the NCPO to push ahead with solutions to these problems. The NCPO stressed the need for reform as soon as possible to make Thailand become a fully functioning democracy before elections. It fully hopes that the EU will understand the situation, as most Thais do.

On 26th June, the NCPO Deputy Chief for Economic Affairs met and discussed concerns with members of foreign chambers of commerce and various groups of entrepreneurs. He also listened to their suggestions, together with solutions to prevent Thailand’s trade and investment relations with foreign countries from being affected. The entrepreneurs have shown their better understanding about the country’s situation.

The NCPO has met and talked to foreign business people from the EU, as well as the United States. Their trade and investment relations with Thailand have continued.

General Prayuth said that problems concerning labor, human trafficking, and abuse of democracy have accumulated for a long time and it will take some time to ease them. In this regard, rules and regulations will have to be revised to meet international standards and prevent the abuse of state authority. Various measures will also be taken to eliminate corruption.

Concerning the credibility of Thailand, General Prayuth said that the NCPO will try its best to address the issue as quickly as possible. On 23rd June 2014, the Security Chief of the NCPO invited the US Ambassador to Thailand to discuss and exchange views on the current situation. The Ambassador was informed of the roadmap of the NCPO and was satisfied that Thailand has clear directions. She also HUA HIN TODAY, August 2014

He emphasised efforts to formulate strategies, both domestic and international, in order to move the country forward, saying that all sectors need to adjust to the new situation.

The private sector is more optimistic about the economic recovery in the second half of this year after the military junta’s road map is making progress with prediction of 3-4 % growth in economy. The Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) said it was confident to see the economy grow during the second half of this year. The committee, comprising representatives from the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), the Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC), and the Thai Bankers Association (TBA), believes that the Thai economy has passed its lowest point, thanks to

the resolved political conflict and certain policies of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) which are determined to stimulate the economy and boost consumer and investor confidence. With progresses in process, the JSCCIB remains confident that the Thai economy will grow 2-2.5 % for this year and expand by 3-4% for the remainder of this year. In 2015, the committee forecasts that the Thai economy will grow 3.5 to 4.5% while exports for this year on the other hand, can increase to 3 to 5%.

News 11 New Hua Hin Immigration Office Now Open

Hua Hin’s Immigration office has moved to new premises located just off Soi 19 and behind the Index Shopping Centre. The new office was opened on June 27th and is situated in the area known locally as 19 Rai, which can be found behind the Index Shopping Centre, right on the beachfront. The area is often used to hold large concerts and markets and there is also a children’s playground located almost opposite the new office.

which is a great ‘marker’. After turning into Soi 19, follow the road until you reach a T Junction at the end. Then turn right for approximately 300 metres (Soi 35), the office is on the right hand side and easy to spot. The signage when we visited is limited and the old signs pointing towards the previous location were yet to be removed; hopefully soon!

Visa Runs - A Thing Of The Past?

Visa runs have been common among foreigners in Thailand. A simple search on the Net turns up several companies offering “visa trips” for expatriates staying or working here. Visa runners are those who leave Thailand and return immediately for the purpose of extending their stay. By exploiting 60-day tourist visas and 30day visa exemptions, many foreigners can work illegally in language schools, or restaurants and other businesses. It is easier for some to get jobs this way, as some employers do not want to go through the complicated process of seeking work permits and like to avoid the expense if they can. The Immigration Bureau website says: “Leniency will be granted until August 12th, but only for passengers arriving by air. Foreigners who come to Thailand must seek a proper visa in line with the purpose of their intended stay here.” Those on a visa run who are allowed back in will find an “O-I” (Out-In) mark next to their latest stamp marking entry. From August 13th, nobody with an O-I

shopping malls and hotels, travellers to Bangkok will enjoy a very high level of safety. Expatriates who have lived in Bangkok for decades know how these situations pan out and without exception they have always improved security and made the country a safer place to be. This is not a justification for military takeovers, but they do heighten law and order in the country and for a period of time end the inefficiencies of the national police force. The country’s police are also a subject of reform proposals.

The military led by Gen Prayuth and other leaders of the Thai armed forces declared they were seizing power from a caretaker government, 22nd May, to end violence and political conflict. However, savvy travellers know that this is the best time to grab a hotel bargain as five and four-star hotels attempt to shore up business.

Travel recommendation: Thailand is a safe destination right now. Holiday prices are falling and with the added incentive of a weak Thai baht against most currency, this is a good time to visit Thailand.

The Immigration Bureau has already instructed officials to deny entry to foreigners doing visa runs as a measure to stop the exploitation of tourist visas and visa exemptions to live or work here.

Thailand’s Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha says the process of reconciliation between political factions and reform will take some time after that a general election could be held. His assessment, or road map to recovery, was quoted by the National News Bureau of Thailand, the official outlet for government news.

The Immigration Bureau has instructed checkpoints on shared borders to stop visa runners from entering the Kingdom effective immediately. Immigration Division 6 chief Pol MajGeneral Tatchai Pitaneelabut, who oversees immigration affairs in the South, said visa runners come from several countries, including Vietnam, South Korea and Russia. “They come here to work as tour guides, waiters, waitresses, etc,” he said, pointing out that these visa-runners are often based in tourist centres such as Phuket and Songkhla. He said the presence of the so-called “out-in” migrants in the South had been significantly reduced because immigration officials were already enforcing stricter laws. Pol Lt-Colonel Weerawat Nilwat, an inspector at the Sungai Kolok border checkpoint in Narathiwat Province, disclosed that immigration officials at his workplace had already barred more than 100 visa-runners from re-entering the Kingdom.

The website of the Immigration Bureau in Bangkok, on 22nd July posted a new announcement regarding its rules for overstay. The new regulations iare yet to be approved by the Ministry of Interior. That means, the new rules is not yet in effect. If you currently are on overstay, you are advised to clear it as soon as possible. Good advice would be to clear the overstay at the Airport and fly out to a neighbouring country and obtain a relevant visa at a Royal Thai Consulate or Embassy. The announcement details the proposed penalties for overstay as follows: Warning ! The aliens who violate The Immigration Act, B.E.2522 by overstaying more than 90 days in the Kingdom of Thailand will be forbidden from re-entering the kingdom for a certain period of time as follow ; Overstay more than 90 days forbidden 1 year Overstay more than 1 year forbidden 3 years Overstay more than 3 years forbidden 5 years Overstay more than 5 years forbidden 10 years In the case that alien is being apprehended Overstay less than 1 year forbidden 5 years Overstay more than 1 years forbidden 10 years The previous rules regarding overstay described a fine of 500 Baht/day up to a maximum of 20,000 Baht. With regards to arrest, detention, deportation or blacklisting, each individual was reviewed by the Immigration Bureau on a case by case basis. Immigration has recently taken a number of measures to stop foreign nationals abusing the system which is in place to assist bonafide tourists only and has looked to prevent those who complete regular ‘Out/In border runs’ from being able to stay in Thailand long term.

“We have to be strict because we have to uphold laws and properly control immigrants. Efficiency on this front will also reduce crime,” he said.

There are also an increasing number of reports that foreigners are being asked to sign a form acknowledging the penalties for foreigners who overstay.

“We have made it clear that if they want to work in Thailand, they must seek a work permit and get the right type of visa,” Thirachai said.

An immigration source commented that the time has come for foreigners to show disregard for the rules and regulations in order to stay in Thailand legally. “It is time to stop. If you live in a country, you respect its rules.” The Thailand Immigration website is www.bangkok.immigration.go.th HUA HIN TODAY, August 2014

14 GOLF Casual Water – The Wet Season is Here…………… The adjective ‘casual’ usually means relaxed, informal or carefree. But for golfers, especially during the wet season in Thailand, ‘casual’ water has a very different meaning. It’s not to be feared, but it’s also not totally carefree. According to the rule book ‘casual water’ is any temporary accumulation of water on the course that is not in a water hazard and is visible before or after the player takes a stance. Casual water is considered an abnormal ground condition. If a golfer’s golf ball rests in casual water, or casual water interferes with the stance, there is an entitlement to free relief. (Rule 25)

The nearest point of relief must not be in a hazard or on a putting green. The key word here is nearest, not the best for you or out of trouble.

Dew and frost are not casual water. A lake is not casual water. A temporary puddle because of rainwater (or overzealous watering) is what this rule is all about.

In A Bunker Casual Water in a bunker can be a problem because relief without penalty can only be taken within the bunker. However if the bunker is full of water, unlike other parts of the course, you are permitted to drop in a spot where complete relief is not taken but where the water is less of a problem.

Water on the golf course (including off the fairway) that is easy to spot is an obvious case of casual water, but even if you can’t see the water when you get to your ball, the rule may still apply. Sometimes just taking a normal stance brings water to the surface. However you must to be able to see water when you take your stance, jumping up and down on the spot is not OK. Soft, damp, muddy or spongy ground is not casual water. The key word is visible. What Are Your Choices - Look Before You Lift! 1. Play the ball as it lies. Taking relief is not compulsory; sometimes playing it from the water is the best option. Always carefully assess the situation before lifting the ball. Know where the relief must be taken; but also how your significant other will react to mud all over your clothing! 2. Lift and drop the ball, without penalty, within one club-length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief.

If this means dropping into the jungle or behind a tree - bad luck, or onto the fairway - good luck! If the ball becomes unplayable after dropping, further relief can only be as unplayable with a penalty. Complete relief must be taken. It’s not within the rules to drop the ball in a more friendly position but still in casual water for either the player or the ball.

Launching The Hyatt Open 2014 Anyone who played this event over the past 4 years will tell you that it is simply one the best Amateur events in the region. This is a two day event; on the 6th and 7th September at the Banyan Golf Course. Due to the huge success & popularity of the Hyatt Open, Hyatt will be allocating the majority of the playing slots available. There are only a handful of places available. Once those spaces are full, your name will be put onto a waiting list for available slots. This will only be confirmed in the last week of August.

The Tournament fee is 6,200 THB for Banyan Golf Club Members and 8,000 THB for non-Members. Do not delay getting yourself registered for this event which will sell out very quickly.

On The Green Additional free relief is available if your ball is on the green and there is interference from casual water in the line of your putt. It’s also important to note that the nearest point of relief may be off the putting green.

For further information phone: 032 616 200, fax: 032 616 222 (completed form) or by Email: reservations@banyanthailand. com

However if you are off the green and casual water is between you and the hole, there is no free relief. Chipping over or just attempting to go through the water is all you can do without penalty. A Final Word Checking with your marker before you opt to take relief applies to every situation. Casual water is no exception. Don’t let caddies take matters into their own hands; that could be expensive, take control. Just talk it over with the other players and allow common sense and fair play to prevail.

Should you wish to guarantee your playing slot in the Hyatt Open 2014, please contact Hyatt Regency Hua Hin on reservations.hrhuahin@hyatt.com for full tournament package deals.

The Camel Republic Cha-Am – It’s Open; But The Camel’s Are Running Late! What do you call a camel with no humps? ………….……………. Humphrey (hump-free!)

What Can you Expect: The Moroccan inspired architecture; complete with golden spires, Persian styled tiling and archways set the scene. You may think you are approaching a medieval castle in Casablanca.

Cha-Am Today has been keeping an eager eye on the Camel Republic’s progress. We last paid a visit on 25th July. On that day almost everything was up and running; it’s open for visitors.

Apart from camels and camel rides, there are many other animal attractions and the latest mechanical rides. You’ll see alpacas and many other cute and furry creatures for the kids to touch.

However management at this latest ChaAm attraction is anxiously awaiting the arrival of their most prized attraction – the camels. They were due on the day of our visit but no show. We hope that by the time you read this article they will be in place and feeling at home in Thailand. Perhaps these ‘ships of the desert’ had a rough passage.

The rides include the ‘Midi Dance’, the ‘Drop Twist’ and ‘Macaw’. These are the latest high tech and high flying thrill rides for the more adventurous. You can also test your own wings, flying above a windy updraft within the cage of the ‘Skyfly’.

Camel Republic in Cha-am is a project of Pena House Group, the same company which opened Santorini Amusement and Water Park a few years ago. Pena House Group Camel Republic claims that the first attraction of its kind in Thailand. The total cost of the project amounts to 300 million baht. About 900,000 visitors are expected annually.

There are many photograph opportunities, souvenirs aplenty and you won’t go hungry or thirsty.

She Sells Seashells By The Seashore The bounty of the ocean comes to Thailand in many guises, some edible, some recreational and some decorative. Our Regional coastline provides all of these and more. One of the least heralded of these benefits is clearly visible at many tourist coastal locations, but particularly by the seashore of Cha-Am. Seashells have been used as jewelry or in other forms of decoration or adornment since prehistoric times. Making and selling shell decorations of all shapes and sizes follows this tradition as a significant cottage industry for Cha-Am. The city is probably the biggest supplier to many other coastal venues, including Phuket, Krabi, Bang Saen and Pattaya.

Around Cha-Am this industry can be found at all levels; from shell suppliers, family handcraft operations to retail outlets and wholesale businesses. On the beach front retail operators may be either casual vendors strolling along the sands, mobile shops (from motorcycle sidecars to loaded pickups) or at more permanent shops. Vendors seem to miraculously appear whenever a crowd is drawn to the beach, especially on weekends. Items range from children’s’ novelties for a bedside table selling for 2 or 10 THB, through to large decorated mirrors which could be up to 1,000 THB. The most popular version is a doorway ‘curtain’ or archway which goes for around 150 THB. So how does this happen? Cha-Am Today was invited to the ‘workshop’ of Khun Au and Him. This is a family business about 5

years old, which sources the shells, processes them and then arranges for the handcrafting of each item. The shells may be from the Thailand coastline, particularly around Phuket Island, but also from Vietnam or China. They may come in bulky sacks, cleaned and ready or in smaller quantities requiring sorting and cleaning. One important feature is that they are both white and naturally coloured, never dyed. Colours range of pastel shades of delicate pink or purple through to red, brown and orange. Decorations may be over 10 years old but show no signs of fading or otherwise deteriorating. Also a variety of shapes from the almost flat, ‘fanned’ species through to ‘snail’ shapes and ‘prickly’ extended cones. Not living creatures, but the remnants of what once was. Otherwise destined to become beach sand and there is no shortage of that! No environmental issues here, just another way to appreciate ocean diversity. The small family business we visited makes around 50 of the ‘doorway style’ decorations each week. After sorting, cleaning and drilling a small hole in each shell, they ‘outsource’ the labour intensive process of threading each shell individually onto strands of thin cord or fishing line. The local ladies involved in this task give attention to detail and consistency, although ‘naturally’, each item is unique. This handcraft can be likened to knitting, including the patterns formation and colour changes. A relaxing, stress free and modesty paid hobby for some. About 80% of the shell decorations are bought by Thai people, typically on holidays, with most of the remainder destined to decorate the homes of ex-pats. If you are thinking of taking a souvenir back to your home country, customs regulations will need to be considered. This is really a good news story for the local economy. Why Cha-Am has taken the lead in Thailand is something we can’t explain. Just another example of a local initiative which has really added colour to our region.

Where: On the main Bangkok Highway about 5 kilometres north of Cha-Am. Coming from Cha-Am take the first U turn after passing Santorini and backtrack about 500 metres.

Entrance Fees: Adult: 120 THB Non-Residents: 200 THB Free Entry for Children under 100 cm in height Opening Hours: Mon – Thurs: 10 am to 6 pm Fri – Sun & Public Holiday: 9 am to 7 pm

Doing Business in Cha-Am: Short Term Pain, Long Term Gain Businesses in Cha-Am that are dependent on the patronage of foreigners tourists are struggling. The number of businesses, particularly in the hospitality sector, that are either closed, up for sale or just taking a ‘rain check’ are clearly visible on every Soi leading from the beachfront. A combination of the usual ‘low season blues’ and cancellations linked to political uncertainty have resulted in very quiet times in recent months. The bad news is the numerous reports have been received of cancellations for the coming high season. 2014 is unlikely to be a profitable year for many local business owners. However Cha-Am’s proximity to Bangkok and the continuing growing trend for Thai people to look for a weekend escape from the stresses of Bangkok means that weekends and holiday periods remain busy with many Thai visitors. The clear message is that foreign managed businesses ignore Thai customers at their own peril. A quick drive down Narathip Road after dark will reveal the strong patronage of Thai party-goers at bars and restaurants catering for Thai tastes, both figuratively and musically. Long Term Smart money people say that now is the right time to invest in business premises around Cha-Am. They predict that after the current lull the previous tourism growth of Cha-Am will return. Property and business ownership prices are unlikely to remain at the current very affordable levels, probably the best value of any of Thailand’s tourism centres. After all business investment is not about today, but a longer term outlook. Cha-Am’s location advantages, accessible beachfront and natural attractions will always remain. Add to that the nearby internationally recognised golf courses and the growing number of ‘disney-esque’ venues and the future looks bright.

Perhaps the current business closures will serve to ‘weed-out’ those which were really not up to the mark, making way for more sustainable and innovative operations. Maybe the ‘Darwinian’ process of survival of the fittest offers a stronger future. Marketing, Marketing, Marketing The reality is that many potential or current overseas travellers thinking about visiting Thailand have never heard of Cha-Am. The promotion of the usual tourist venues of Phuket, Kho Samui, Chiang Mai, Pattaya and to a lesser extent Hua Hin continues. The Tourism Authority of Thailand is now increasing this promotion of these destinations to overcome recent visitor downturns. But what about Cha-Am? Any conversation with visitors will soon reveal that most discovered Cha-Am by accident. Maybe the lack of promotion of Cha-Am is deliberate, keeping it as a hidden gem. However for those wanting to put Cha-Am and their own business ‘on the map’ some serious marketing is really needed. Perhaps not the usual suspects, but countries that have their wintertime away from the high low season months could be a target. HUA HIN TODAY, August 2014

Lady Train Service Begins August 1st The State Railway of Thailand announced today that the first lady train service will be introduced on August 1st. The lady train which provides service for only women and children will be on service on three main routes.

Coinciding with the 6th Anniversary of the Sirindhorn Park, the 2014 Photo Competition provided the region’s photographers the opportunity to showcase their talent and to highlight the beauty of Thailand’s environment. The H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Trophy was on offer as well as cash prizes valued at 100,000 THB.

It said special carriage will be a second class air-conditioned car and secondclass sleeping car on three routes - north, northeast and south. Boys under 10 years old and no taller than 150 centimetres can also travel on these carriages.

The Park was opened in 2003 as an honour to H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, aiming to revive the mangrove, beachfront and mixed deciduous forest environment back to a pristine state. It also aims to be a Centre for training and distributing knowledge in natural conservation along with methods for energy saving. The Park provides eco-tourism for the public to encourage awareness about the significance of environment and conservation for sustainable development. Sirindhorn Park was awarded a Tourism Authority of Thailand Award in 2013 for learning–based recreation. Our attendance at the Park on 19th July was not the time to check out all the displays, practical rehabilitation projects and learning opportunities. That will come another day, but sufficient to say that a visit to the Park, located at the Rama VI Military Camp, should be on everyone’s agenda. This is a modern, well-resourced and visually appealing venue to consider local environmental issues and ways of managing a sustainable environment as well as to observe the returning natural wildlife. School children are frequent visitors, with regular excursions to this Learning Centre. On the day of our visit their enthusiasm for the ideals of the Park was on display with many displays of school projects developed under the Park’s guidance. We also enjoyed a visual presentation of how photography can show environmental change with a series of ‘before and after’ shots, including the presenters personal ‘environmental change’, from small boy during the early days at the Park through to the present day. He also highlighted

The special service is introduced on special express trains on Bangkok – Chiang Mai – Bangkok route in the North, Bangkok – Ubon Ratchathani – Bangkok route, and Bangkok – Nong Khai – Bangkok route in the Northeast, and Bangkok – Sungai Kolok – Bangkok route in the South.

the visual impact of photography to demonstrate language errors (both Thai and English) in signage around Thailand; the humour of these errors not lost on the appreciative audience. I didn’t get the opportunity to talk to him about an English language entry sign at the front gate security post requesting drivers to ‘take down their windscreen’………………… How do you do that? The key note speaker and photography award presenter was the inaugural and current President of The Sirindhorn International Environmental Park Foundation, Dr Sumet Tantivejkul. Clearly a very passionate advocate of environmental protection, he offered comment and ongoing concerns about continuing Thailand forestry degradation.

The service is introduced to safeguard the safety and convenience of female passengers.

More foreign firms allowed to do business in Thailand

However this was really a day for celebration with a demonstration of traditional dance and goodwill amongst the gathered visitors. The displays of the winning photography were outstanding with some very colourful and varied photos of the flora and fauna encouraging further exploration of the Park. Our congratulations to the many winners; a world class display of photography with a message. We hope to be part of encouraging that exploration with a review of the Sirindhorn International Environment Park coming soon! For more information: www.sirindhornpark. org.th

News 25 The Science of Jet Lag... and how best to beat it It’s the curse of the long-distance traveller: how to stay awake in Bangkok when your body is telling you it’s in London. Jet lag is exhausting, disorientating, and can even make you lose your appetite and libido. According to Air & Space magazine the term “jet lag” may have been first coined in February 1966. “If you’re going to be a member of the Jet Set and fly off to Katmandu for coffee with King Mahendra,” wrote Horace Sutton in the Los Angeles Times, “you can count on contracting Jet Lag, a debility like a hangover. Jet Lag derives from the simple fact that jets travel so fast they leave your body rhythms behind.”

It’s only in the last few decades that humans have been able to jump time zones, and we’ve yet to find a way to adapt. To overcome its effects, travellers have turned to everything from taping plant seeds to acupressure points behind their ears to swallowing Viagra. But what actually happens to our bodies when we leap across time zones, and how is research helping us understand how to ease the effects? Jet lag is the result of a disruption in our body’s internal clocks. Our biological clocks drive our circadian rhythms, which anticipate dawn and dusk, and controls everything from blood pressure to how hungry we are. The system is synchronised to a period of around 24 hours – a “master clock” in our brain that is sensitive to our exposure to light coordinates all the body clocks within our organs and tissues. All these clocks are controlled by the hormone melatonin, which is produced by the master clock when it gets dark to make us feel drowsy, and controls our body temperature when we sleep. When we fly to a different time zone, all the clocks in our body go out of sync – or, to use the technical term, “desynchronise”. Each clock

then takes a slightly different amount of time to re-adjust, which is why we feel so bad. It takes most people a few days to fully adjust, depending on not only how many time zones have been crossed, but also the direction of travel. Adjusting to eastward travel is harder because of the way our internal body clock functions. As this clock follows a period of just over 24 hours, our bodies compensate every day by contracting this to synchronise with the regular 24-hour sun cycle. When you travel west, you gain several hours, and so your body has extra time to make this adjustment. Travel east, though, and your day is shortened, which makes the adjustment more difficult. So how possible is it to fool our biological clocks? “There is no silver bullet – so far – to treat jet lag,” says Horacio de la Iglesia, professor of biology at the University of Washington. “Typically, the best way involves a combination of strategies that include restricting light exposure to specific times, restricting rest and meals, as well as activities such as walking and running to specific times, and the use of the hormone melatonin in very small amounts.” Simon Archer from Surrey University agrees, at least in principle. “A combined approach can be helpful, but in practice it may be difficult to get all the timings right – it may be very difficult not to be exposed to light at an inappropriate time.” Also melatonin isn’t available in every country, and people with epilepsy or those that use warfarin, a drug used to treat blood clots, are advised against taking it. All these strategies are aimed at speeding up the adjustment of our multiple clocks to the new time zone. Work over the past 15 years has led to an amazing increase in our understanding of the circadian clock, light input and jet lag, says Stuart Peirson of the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology at Oxford University. The master clock is in the hypothalamus of the brain – the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN). This mechanism relies on so-called “clock genes”, expressed in the neurons of the SCN. Altering these genes also alters the 24-hour behaviour of the organism – “be it a fly, a mouse or a human,” says Peirson. Our circadian mechanism relies on “clock genes” that code for proteins, whose levels rise and fall in rhythmic patterns (Science Photo Library)

85% of Thai Cigarette Packs Must Now be Covered with Graphic Warnings The Supreme Administrative Court of Thailand approved a new regulation for cigarette manufacturers that will force them to cover at least 85% of their cigarette packs with graphic warnings regarding the health of smokers and second-hand smokers. Warnings currently cover 55% of cigarette packs, by Thai law, but now it will be mandatory for cigarette makers to up the coverage to 85%. Tobacco giants like Philip Morris and others, including over 1,400 Thai retailers, sued the Ministry of Health when it implemented the new law last year. Because of the furore, the Supreme Court temporarily suspended the order, but it has now brought it back into force.

standards, they will be liable to penalties. The grace period has been given to allow retailers to clear out their old stock.

This means that from 23rd September 2014, Public Health officials will begin random inspections on retailers, and if retailers are found to be selling cigarette packs which do not comply with the new

The second highest cause of death among Thai people are tobacco-related diseases (the first is alcohol). It’s no wonder the new 85% coverage is now the highest in the world.

Together with his team, he has been studying how light changes the expression of clock genes in the SCN. Increased expression of certain clock genes effectively moves the molecular ‘hands’ of the clock to the correct time, says Peirson – but there seems to be a limit on how much the clock can be shifted: it’s just one hour per day. “Our work in this area has identified a natural brake – a protein called SIK1 – that is activated by light and actively prevents the clock shifting. Normally it would take five or six days to adjust to a six-hour shift in time zone. “When this [SIK1] mechanism is blocked, it enables mice to shift their clocks much more quickly – shifting six hours in two-to-three days,” says Peirson. Work published last year by researchers in Japan suggests a hormone plays a key role in re-setting the body clock. Mice lacking receptors for the hormone arginine vasopressin were much less affected by jet lag and adjusted more quickly to time shifts, says Peirson. However, turning this intriguing finding into any potential jet-lag cure will be far from simple. Some scientists are looking at how we can avoid jet lag by preparing for it in advance. “We believe it is important for many people to start the process of shifting your internal rhythms before the flight, so that you arrive with little or no jet lag,” says Charmane Eastman at Rush University in Chicago, Illinois. “Most recommendations and computer-based programs only make recommendations for what to do after landing in the new time zone.” Together with colleagues, Eastman has been investigating how people could reset their body clocks before flying. The scientists gave volunteers melatonin sold over the counter, and altered their light patterns using a big light box. They found that a combination of as little as 0.5 mg

of melatonin (common doses are 3 and 5mg) with morning intermittent bright light advanced people’s sleep schedule, resetting the circadian clock earlier in time, and thus making all the circadian rhythms of the body happen earlier. So to avoid jet lag when flying east, says Eastman, you have to take melatonin in the afternoon for a number of days before the journey, and use the light box in the mornings to wake up earlier each day. This can be done for the number of days equal to the number of time zones that will be crossed, helping the body to completely adjust to the new time before the trip. Most people, however, use fewer days, and then jet lag upon arrival is reduced and you get over your remaining jet lag sooner, says Eastman. When flying west, Eastman recommends using the light box at night, and perhaps taking melatonin in the morning. There might also be ways to adjust the body clock without drugs. Another group of scientists has designed an app called Entrain that uses mathematical modelling to determine how our body can shift from one time zone to another in the quickest way possible. If users type in the timezone they are travelling to the app calculates a schedule that tells the user when they should expose themselves to light. The researchers say it’s probably easiest for travellers to divide their day into two parts, one where they seek as much light as possible and another where they should try to be in darkness – essentially corresponding to dawn and dusk. The software “should allow an individual to get over jet lag in less than half the time than if one used other well-known recommendations,” says Daniel Forger of the University of Michigan, a coauthor of the study.

Watching 3 Hours of Daily TV May Double Early Death Risk People who watch three or more hours of television daily may be twice as likely to die prematurely than people who watch less, according to a recent study. The research in the Journal of the American Heart Association is the latest to describe the potential dangers of a sedentary lifestyle, which include high blood pressure, obesity, cancer and heart disease. “Our findings are consistent with a range of previous studies where time spent watching television was linked to mortality,” said lead author Miguel Martinez-Gonzalez, chair of the department of public health at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. The research was based on records from more than 13,000 people who had graduated from Spanish universities. Their average age was 37, and 60 percent were women. Researchers wanted to find out if there was any link between dying young and the amount of television watched. They also looked at how long people spent at a computer and daily driving time and whether these influenced death risk.

Participants were healthy when they began the study and were followed for a median, or midpoint, of 8.2 years. Those who watched television more than three hours per day were more than twice as likely to die young as those who watched an hour or less, the report said. The most common cause of death was cancer, which killed 46 people. Thirty-two died of other causes, and 19 deaths were linked to cardiovascular problems. Research did not find any association between computer time and premature death, or between driving and dying young. It also did not prove that television watching caused the early deaths, just that an association could be found between more TV-viewing and a higher chance of dying, even when researchers adjusted for other potentially confounding factors. “Our findings suggest adults may consider increasing their physical activity, avoid long sedentary periods, and reduce television watching to no longer than one to two hours each day,” said MartinezGonzalez. Handicaps are a way for golfers of different abilities to compete. However golfers who only play socially will not have an official handicap or perhaps a handicap that’s out of date. Asking them to guess isn’t good enough. If someone’s response to a question about their handicap is a blank stare or a comment about it being between their ears or a ‘gammy’ leg, chances are they don’t have one. We’ve all seen those outrageous results with a gross score totally out of range for someone who claimed a handicap in the late 20’s or higher. To resolve this problem there are at least two systems which provide a formula for manufacturing a handicap based on performances on the day. These systems are not perfect with an element of luck involved, but at least there’s an even playing field and no ‘sandbaggers’. Here’s how the ‘System 36’ and ‘Peoria System’ work, two of the most popular ways to calculate a ‘one day handicap’. A prerequisite for using these systems is a way of calculating the results quickly, preferably with a computer-based program. Getting the score cards to the scorer without delay (not after a shower) will also save time and losing golfers tired of waiting. At the recent Springfield Charity and Masters each returning group was greeted as they returned outside the club house by a ‘card collector’, a really good idea! PREORIA The basis for this system is that your handicap for the round is calculated using the scores of six predetermined holes, although none of the players know which six holes have been selected. These holes are typically two par 3’s, par 4’s and par 5’s; spread over the eighteen holes. When the card is returned the players score for the six holes is multiplied by six (e.g. 30 strokes x 3 = 90). The course par is then deducted (e.g. 90 – 72 = 18). The last step is to award a handicap of 80% of that number (e.g. 80% of 18 when rounded off = 14). If you are clever: Just score badly on the 6 selected holes and then excel on the rest! But expect accusations of the organisers ‘leaking’; their selections to you ……………. SYSTEM 36 This system uses your score on every hole. Points are accumulated as follows: Double bogey or worse – 0 points Bogey - 1 point Par or better – 2 points Using this formula deduct the points accumulated from 36, this is now your handicap. For example if you score 1 birdie, 6 pars (14 points), 6 bogies (6 points) and the rest double bogie or higher (0 points) 36 less 20 = 16 handicap. If are clever: Score either birdies or double bogies only! For example 3 birdies and 14 double bogies will give you a handicap of 28 and a net score of 64. Good luck ……! What About A Shotgun Start? As most golfers know, this means each group (or two) is assigned a different starting hole. Everyone starts at a given signal (perhaps something like a cannon?) and finishes around the same time. The prerequisites are transport to and from the starting and finishing hole and clarity about where and when the start happens. Having score cards with this information provided at registration is the way to go. This means a significant saving of time before the results can be announced, an important part of a social day. Golfers arriving at the course as a group are also accommodated. However are there enough showers for 60 or more golfers wanting to refresh at the same time? The success of every social or even competitive golfing day is not to underestimate the organisation required and always think about fairness and golfer’s convenience.

News 31 Bangkok University & Hua Hin Municipality

Cooperate To Prepare for ASEAN

Bangkok University (BU) and the Hua Hin Municipality have released information about the preparation of local communities for the upcoming ASEAN community era. Both organisations talked about mobilising Thai youth to become the new global generation with knowledge and resources for the modern labor market to compete with other member countries. The Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul said that local communities and administrative organisations play a major role in improving the life of Thai youth. Now is the time for people to be fully equipped with foreign language skills, especially English and other ASEAN languages. Administrators should encourage local schools to implement foreign language training without delay. Mr. Nopporn said he was determined to develop the beachfront city so that it becomes the most charming, modernised and lively tourist attraction in Thailand. To achieve this, improvement in the quality of education to reach international standard and achieve academic excellence is paramount. Teaching staff should be academically knowledgeable and versatile. Cooperation between BU and the Hua Hin Municipality is a good sign for the success of this preparation. The President of BU, Dr. Matthana Santiwat, added that she was pleased the Hin Municipality, private sector operators and local people were considering the future of the ASEAN Economic Community. Many ideas have been put forward about using education to improve, strengthen and mobilise local communities. The main income of Hua Hin is derived from an increasing number of Thai and foreign

visitors. Local administration, management and mobilisation are imperative with the proficiency of human resources being a major indicator of success as an Asean nation. Education is a way to increase the capacity to compete against other countries and to enhance living conditions for Thai people. Human Resource development is a primary mission of BU to enhance the national capacity. The university is formulating 3 policies to this end. The policies aim to promote student creativity, entrepreneurial skills and universality. Successful professional people need academic knowledge, professional ability, creativity and vision to equip business owners to be able to work anytime and anywhere. BU was the first private academic institution in Thailand to provide courses on business administration together with hotel and tourism management. For over 50 years university graduates have established businesses or work successfully as business executives. Many of them are living and working in Hua Hin. BU is available to help local organisations and communities prepare themselves and receives strong and active support from these graduates. A seminar to encourage Thai youth to be competitive has been held, Chaired by the Project Director of Development and Internationalisation, Dr. Jiraporn Kerdchuchuen. Dr Kerdchuchuen was joined by the Manager of the Institute for Business Development, Assistant Professor Suwinai Torsirisuk, and the Deputy Mayor of Hua Hin Ms. Bussaba Chokesuchart. This seminar provided specific knowledge about business management to entrepreneurs, students, teachers and other local people.

FIFA 2014 World Cup It’s Over!

And the Winner is ……………..Football; and Germany!

It’s been called the biggest and best sporting event on the planet. For some it’s been total focus on football for the length of the event and in Thailand many sleepless nights watching TV at the least friendly hours of the morning. For others, now that it’s over, just relief that they don’t have to give an opinion about a sport they know very little about.

The Final The sceptics may have thought this match would be an anti-climax with Germany the firm favourites after a series of clinical though exciting team performances. They were expected to be the first European winner on South American soil.

This year’s World Cup has been called the best ever; no shortage of brilliance, controversy, tragedy, euphoria and dismay. Here’s some of the more memorable happenings…………………………….. Spain, the 2013 Champion, bowing out in the first round. A 5-1 defeat by The Netherland’s in their first game set the scene. Brazil’s double tragedy. Their Champion striker Naymar suffering an horrific injury with a fractured vertebra, followed by the team being humiliated by Germany in a 1-7 defeat at the semifinals stage and being beaten again in the decider for third place.

Argentina’s Lionel Messi (the ‘Hand of God’) had the weight of his nation’s hopes on his shoulders and the possibility of captaining a World Cup winning side the only missing achievement as the successor to the immortal Diego Maradona.

Uruguay’s serial ‘biter’ Louis Suarez as a repeat offender receiving a penalty some say didn’t fit the crime.

In the end the pundits were correct as a solitary goal in extra time was all it took for Germany to be declared the champions.

Costa Rica’s great performance as a ‘minnow’ in the field, doing the nation proud.

Put on your leather shorts, get thigh slapping, the German party has started!

The master stroke of Dutch coach Van Gaal to substitute the team’s goal keeper moments before the winning penalty shootout against Costa Rica, a strategy which could not be repeated in the losing semifinals against Argentina. The final as a classic Europe V Latin America contest; Germany V Argentina.

farmers will monitor the plant growth and guide the students to produce the highest quality and yield. The new garden hosts a variety of organically propagated plants from the Chiva-Som Organic Farm including Thai basil, lemon basil, pandan, lemongrass, green and red lettuce, bitter melon, angled loofah, baby corn and zucchini. Special thanks have been offered to the Chiva-Som Social Welfare Department for organising this great initiative with the full support of the Organic Farming Team. HUA HIN TODAY, August 2014

34 Motoring Thailand’s Eco-Car Future The Thai auto market is experiencing a transformation. Consumer preference in Thailand is shifting toward smaller cars because of their lower prices as well as operating costs.

small cars, this one is a winner. Great packaging of interior space, great design and a peppy drive are the Brio’s talking points.

Eco-cars have received a positive response from consumers. It has also attracted investors who have been given incentives to produce environmentally friendly vehicles.

in this automotive age of excess: a back-to-basics, no-nonsense ride intended primarily as sensible transportation. Flashy and powerful it isn’t, but the diminutive, affordable hatchback does offer a surprising amount of passenger space, excellent maneuverability and combined fuel economy.

An eco-car is a motor vehicle that emits either modest or no greenhouse gases. It is less harmful to the environment, in comparison to conventional internal combustion engine vehicles running on gasoline or diesel. The eco-car models also offer lower fuel consumption. Thailand is likely to produce 3.4 million car units in 2017, against three million targeted earlier. With this number, Thailand will rank among the world’s top automotive manufacturers.

Here’s Out Top Ten

10. Nissan Almera

The Suzuki Swift is a smart-looking supermini that handles neatly, is well priced and has lots of equipment for the money. It’s cheap to run, too. It can’t match the class leaders for refinement, practicality or interior quality. The 1.2-litre petrol engine is a little weedy. The Suzuki Swift offers sharp handling in a package that’s affordable to buy and run.

3. BMW 320D

(2,899,000 THB)

But more than that it is the first Japanese hybrid to offer a competitive, well-packaged, small hatch alternative.

Wellness 35 Alternative Medicine at Hua Hin Hospital The Alternative Medicine Department is located on the 2nd floor of Hua Hin Hospital. You can ask for help in the foreigner’s service department of the hospital located in the main lobby of the first floor. They are very helpful. This Department was opened on 1st May 2013. It is open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 3.30pm. The staff at the Department are two young ladies, Ms Sunantip (Dr. Noi) and Ms Tusanee (Dr. Nan). Ms. Sunantip Kentasil is a Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctor. She is 26 years old and a graduate of Hanchiew Chalermprakiet University. She previously worked at Biangplee Hospital and at Hua Hin Hospital. She also trains other staff. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) originated in ancient China and has evolved over thousands of years. TCM practitioners use herbal medicines and various mind and body practices, such as acupuncture, moxibustion (burning-herb above the skin to apply heat to acupuncture points), Chinese herbal medicine, tui na (Chinese therapeutic massage), dietary therapy, and tai chi and qi gong (practices that combine specific movements or postures, coordinated breathing, and mental focus). Chinese herbal medicine; the Chinese Materia Medica (a pharmacological reference book used by TCM practitioners) describes thousands of medicinal substances—primarily plants, but also some minerals and animal products. Different parts of plants, such as the leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds, are used. In TCM, herbs are often combined in formulas and given as teas, capsules, liquid extracts, granules, or powders. Acupuncture is a family of procedures involving the stimulation of specific points on the body using a variety of techniques. The acupuncture technique which has been most often studied scientifically, involves penetrating the skin with very thin, solid, metal needles that are sometimes manipulated by hands, or by electrical stimulation. Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves the burning of mugwort, a small, spongy herb, to facilitate healing. In traditional Chinese medicine, moxibustion is used on people who have a cold or a stagnant condition. The burning of moxa is believed to expel cold and warm the meridians, which leads to smoother flow of blood and qi. What conditions can Chinese Medicine treat? Acupuncture is effective for treating 28 conditions including tension headaches and migraines, office syndrome, neckShoulder-back pain, insomnia and stroke. Cosmetic acupuncture

can help reduce wrinkles, diminish fine lines, remove age spots, lift droopy eyelids, acne, face, lips and weight loss. How long is needed to complete a treatment? The treatment is for 20-25 minutes and if you want to combine 2 techniques then 10 minutes more. A popular combination is acupuncture and cupping to heal deep pain. Is Acupuncture painful? Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles through the patient’s skin at specific points on the body. The needles are inserted to various depths. According to traditional Chinese medical theory, acupuncture points are located on meridians through which chi vital energy runs. The needle which scares many people is very fine, like a hair. The pain if any, is not more than a mosquito bite. Ms. Tusanee Somboom (Nan) is a Thai Traditional Medicine Doctor. She is a 25 year old graduate from Rajamangala University Thanyaburi. Traditional Thai Medicine (TTM) is an officially recognised part of the healthcare system in Thailand. Every formally trained TTM practitioner is required by the government to study a standardised curriculum, which typically includes one year of classes to become a traditional pharmacist and another two years to become a full physician. The arts of therapeutic massage (nuat phaen boran) or traditional midwifery (pradung kahn) can be taken during a fourth optional, year. Students graduating from these programs are examined by the Ministry of Public Health, and are licensed and regulated by the national government through a process parallel to that which regulates medical doctors, nurses, and other practitioners of Western medicine. Court-type Thai traditional massage has been passed down from practitioners who worked for royalty in the old days. It has the benefit of stimulating blood and lymphatic circulation as well as stimulating the nervous system. It also helps relax muscles. Other benefits include treating diseases and conditions from ailments such as stroke, paralysis, back pain, frozen shoulder, and stiff limb joints. Patients usually feel relaxed after the treatment. This type of massage is also used as a proactive approach in health. Treatment with a hot herbal compress has the benefit of stimulating blood circulation, reducing swelling, relieving muscular inflammation and relieving aching pain.

How to eat healthy for weight loss and lean muscle gain First off, let me tell you the hardest part is deciding and committing to eating healthy, eating with a focus on nutrition first. Why? Because most of us eat for the wrong reasons. We eat for the pleasure of taste, for emotional reasons, cravings and to fill ourselves up quickly.

in rejuvenating itself and increasing your energy levels as well. TRY NOT TO MIX YOUR PROTEIN AND COMPLEX CARBS TOGETHER IN ANY MEAL.

Postpartum care has the benefit of returning women to health after delivery. It may consist of court-type Thai traditional massage, treatment with a hot herbal compress, a hot salt-pot compress and a herbal steam bath. Thai Traditional Medicine includes history taking, physical examination, analysis for etiology, diagnosis, planning treatment and counseling, emphasis on common or non-complicated symptoms/problems or diseases, matching the symptoms/ problems and diagnosis with modern medicine. Thai Traditional Therapeutic Massage includes history taking, physical examination, diagnosis, planning management, court type Thai traditional massage, counseling and techniques of management for common symptoms/problems or diseases. Thai Traditional Pharmacy involves the formulation of herbal medicinal recipes, dispensing herbal medicines according to symptoms/problems and giving pharmaceutical advice. Herbal compress balls are bags of herbs, especially those containing essential oils which, when exposed to heat, will give out aroma and oil at the same time. These herbs are zingiber, curcuma longa, zedoary, lemongrass, kaffir lime and camphor. It is an old Thai tradition medicinal that can be used along with Thai massage when the massage is finished. Please Note: Hua Hin Hospital is very busy in the morning hours and the parking is almost always full. It is suggested that you park just before or just after on Phetkasem Road where there is always free parking. The effects of these modalities can be quantified by measuring before and after Biopulsar® analysis by Manida White (www.manidawhite.com), who introduced me to the department. want to gain muscle, you have to increase your protein intake, a good rule is about 3/4’s to 1gram per pound of body weight…. Use good oil….. Rice bran oil is good to cook with as well as Coconut oil, DO NOT COOK WITH OLIVE OIL…. use it raw….. eat avocado’s, good veggie fat, and eat a little more meat fats…. such as 2 strips of bacon a day or every other day, this will help to convert your starches and sugars into energy…. do not think a “FAT-FREE” diet works, it doesn’t. Your body needs some fats to help it work properly, not a lot so don’t go crazy, but some.

So no meat and potatoes or pasta and meat sauces for dinner…. eat Vegetables and meat…. or Vegetables and Carbs…..

If you want to jump start the process of losing Body Fat and gaining some lean muscle tissue, you can do the following for 3 days;

Eat more FRUIT!!! for mid-morning snack, and afternoon snack… simple sugars that are used more readily and won’t get stored. The will help in creating energy.

EAT ONLY; Protein and Vegetables…..for breakfast, eggs, boiled or steamed, and some veggies, steamed, raw or lightly cooked and/or fresh veggie juice with greens.

I will assume most of you want to shed body fat and gain lean muscle mass, If anyone has more questions that I don’t address, please send an email to powerfit102@gmail.com. This is a general outline for you to consider when you are at home or out eating.

LUNCH; Eat half as many carbs ( Brown rice, whole flour/ grain bread, spelt bread) as you had for breakfast with more protein…. Tuna salad with a tomato, meat, Chicken without skin, Vegetables, raw juices.

Lunch and dinner, meat, fish, chicken, steamed grilled or lightly pan fried…using rich bran oil…..raw or juiced veggies is best….. juiced is higher in content and more concentrated in vitamin’s, you can get it pre-made for you at our juice bar, for the day.

STAY AWAY FROM ANY PROCESSED CEREALS AND FOOD LIKE SUBSTANCES. NO PASTA’S, BREAD’S, WHITE RICE, CREAMERS, FAKE SUGARS, SODA’S including “DIET”, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYUPS, and STOP OR MINIMIZE YOUR DRINKING ALCOHOL!

Mid-day snack; Protein drink, fruit, salad, chicken, nuts and dried fruit mixes are great.

Don’t eat any sugars, NONE…..maybe a piece of fruit now and then if you’re feeling tired or are craving something sweet, but keep it minimal.

So mostly we eat from a physiologically dis-advantaged point. We don’t think about the nutritional reasons of why we need to eat. We eat to satisfy our minds, not our body. Eating well and simply does not mean eating with without taste or enjoyment.

Take a PROTEIN drink at least 2 times a day….. 1-2 scoops per glass of water….. mid morning and after lunch or training….. 3 times if you want to take it as a breakfast replacement, you can mix yogurt and fruit, beet root, carrots, greens, celery, apples, etc. We can make it for you or you can blend it at home. Make it so you enjoy the taste, otherwise, you’ll drink it once and then stop. it is better than candy, cookies or cake if made properly so make it tasty.

Instead of drinking beer daily, drink more water, fresh lemon or lime in it, and try to drink (beer) only on the weekends. Beer, is the worst as it spikes your insulin levels and increases your sugar intake….. sugar which your body has no use for… so it stores it as it just doesn’t know what to do with it, and keep your wine to a few glasses, not bottles…. Also you must chew your food to almost a liquified state. Digestion starts in the mouth, not the stomach, so try and chew your food at least 20 times each bite, I know it is a lot for us as we mostly chew 2-3 times and then swallow, the stomach is not designed to break down chunks of food, you will also eat less if you chew more, allowing your body to give off the ‘Full signal” earlier. Basically for Breakfast you have two choices; 1. Eat Carbs such as Oatmeal, (porridge) with fruit, yogurt, etc., about a medium size bowl, with honey if you need a sweetener, with very little milk. Tea or coffee is fine with very little cream, try not to use any sugar if you can, if you need to use sugar, use honey or a pure brown cane sugar that has not been refined, no white sugar. You can also eat a bowl of Yogurt with fruit. Eat Yogurt that is sugar free and has good pro-biotics for digestion. Which will help in your weight loss. This will give you good energy in the morning and will last for a few hours. 2. Eating an all protein breakfast, such as 3-4 eggs, 2 strips of bacon, or meat…. no carbs,(toast)…. this has been proven to raise you IGF 1 levels for several hours, (HGH) which will aid your body

Take a good pro-biotic to aid in digestion, also a good multivitamin with minerals will help and drink more water!!! We as a society, don’t drink enough water….. water is the great cleanser…..

Dinner: Don’t eat any carbs for dinner and don’t eat any complex carbs after 2-3 pm…..and eat dinner at least 3 hours before you go to bed. If you absolutely cannot eat that early and need to eat later, give yourself at least 1.5 hours before you go to bed and eat lightly, a salad with a little chicken, or tuna, or salmon, or just have a protein drink with water and some fresh fruit Most people stay up late and eat late, the body is already gearing down and lowing it’s metabolism for sleep time. When you eat, your body is not in it’s energy mode of digestion so it just stores it for later. DRINK MORE WATER…. EAT MORE FRUIT AND VEGETABLES…. RAW OR JUICED IS BEST OR LIGHTLY COOKED, Steamed and EAT MORE PROTEIN!!!! Protein feeds the muscle and helps in producing energy…..if you

You must make the EFFORT to eat responsibly to gain the effects you desire. Training is the easy part, eating healthy, at first, is the difficult part. Only because we think it is…. and we give into our cravings and likes easily. It is not about being extreme in any way. It is about re-gaining control of our health and eating habits and feeling better and being more powerful in our lives. Being weak is easy. Being powerful takes EFFORT and determination. It takes a strong mind to undo years of mindless action. Now, being mindful and present to your needs, will make you healthier and more content in the long run. It might take a few weeks to overcome some of your issues with eating correctly. Do it now so you don’t have to suffer needlessly in the years to come. In Health and Well Being, Dean, POWERFIT 102. 36 Spa & Health ‘In Balance’ at the Novotel ; Don’t Be Shy

One of the reasons for our spa review at the Novotel was to look at the real differences between a massage at one of the numerous massage shops around town and a massage at an upmarket resort. After all, the price difference may be quite substantial, but is it really worth it? Our criteria included the setting, the service and the overall experience. We didn’t choose an elaborate or specialised treatment, just the sort of massage that is at offered at many premises.

Our Novotel massage was the ‘In Balance Signature Massage’. This is a combination of Thai traditional with some added aromatics. Not too many ‘herbs and spices’ but the added benefits of subtle fragrances to increase the massage effects and sensual pleasure. I have noticed that many Thai masseurs may use a rather pungent lotion or oil which can be a distraction rather than a bonus. But to backtrack, what about the setting? At ‘In Balance’, the Novotel’s Spa Centre, the answer is delightful. You wander down past the Resort’s pool area, kid’s playground and fitness centre before going into the welcoming spa reception area.

chatter between staff. This was a calming and relaxing introduction to the treatment. I was also reassured that the glass separating you from the vista is one-way, ensuring your complete privacy. Of course face down there is a slightly raised and open head support, allowing you to remain comfortable in this position; you can breathe normally. This is unusual for many massage shops which provide only a basic bench, not really designed for massage. My masseur, Khun Ben, was calm, confident and reassuring. She clearly knew her trade and was firm but gentle. She was eager to ask about my comfort level and able to give me the confidence needed to completely relax and drift into that state somewhere between sleep and awareness. Massage can be a great time to ponder the state of the world without distraction, although sleep means you may miss those ‘goose bump’ moments when just the right touch at the right place brings a smile to your face.

You’ll be immediately greeted by staff offering a refreshing cool tea before being ushered into the spacious and peaceful treatment room. Your booking will be recognised without fuss and the masseur ready and waiting. None of the uncertainty of many massage shops where you may need to wake up sleeping staff or wait until one of their food breaks is over. The treatment room is huge with expansive beach and ocean views. Not a crowded cubicle with only a curtain separating you from the next customer or listening to idle

I remember having some spare time and at a Bangkok Shopping Centre choosing to take a massage there. They wheeled in a male gorilla who probably gave me the most painful massage I have ever experienced. Not a pleasant encounter or one that was anything like my treatment at the Novotel! Time goes very quickly, probably the better the massage to shorter the time seems. I guess that was the downside of my Novotel massage experience. I could have gladly accepted more and that was my concluding remark to Khun Ben; ‘mai jute, mai jute’ (don’t stop, don’t stop)! My thanks to her for the rejuvenating experience. I also suggested to her that if I was Alexander Parry, the Novatel

General Manager, I would be a very regular patron. The conclusion is that this level of massage with the anticipated enjoyment and benefits can be much more confidently realised at the Novotel compared with the less sophisticated uncertainties posed by a visit to the ‘hullo welcome’ down town facilities. Yes, it’s more expensive but your enjoyment will be at a much higher level. For me, confidence is a big thing about the likelihood of massage being worthwhile. That’s just one of the factors that you can expect at ‘In Balance’. About In Balance: There’s not a lot of information about the Spa treatments available of the Novotel website. Apart from my ‘Signature Massage’ there another ten options, including Swedish massage, herbal compress and aromatherapy. There is also a special private couple’s spa suite which offers 2.5 hours of indulgence including a floral bath and facial, apart from massage. You may also choose to include a glass of wine and a fruit platter. Perhaps a honeymoon or birthday treat? I’m told that earlier in the Novotel’s history the Spa was a separate business and perhaps outside of management quality control. These days that is not the case and the Spa Manager, Khun Nui, takes great care to ensure your experience is the best. No need to be a guest at the Resort; just put away any anxieties and don’t be shy. Make an easy booking and the rest will be carefree. Open: 9.00 AM to 7.00 PM, Phone: 032 708 300.

Fat Soluble Vitamins

As a follow up to last month’s article by Healthlab, here is some important information about fat soluble vitamins.

4) Help increase the citrate level in blood, bones, liver and heart.

Vitamin A This can be found only in animal products. The most important sources of this vitamin are fish liver oil; especially cod and tuna, liver, egg yolk, milk and other dairy products.

Lack of vitamin D in a child will result in rickets. Lack of vitamin D in an adult will result in osteomalacia (bone softening). Too much vitamin D can be toxic. High calcium and phosphorus in blood will cause the loss of calcium in bones and result in brittle bones.

Vitamin A has many functions as follows: 1) Nourishing the retina of the eyeballs; lack of vitamin A will result in blurred vision at night; 2) Supporting growth; lack of vitamin A at a young age will result in slow growth; 3) Helping the synthesis of substances (glycoproteins and mucopolysaccharide), which are important to the composition of the mucous tissue; lack of vitamin A will result as a dry skin with blisters along the pores and dry mucous membranes; and 4) Vitamin A is also an anti-oxidation which helps decrease the risk of having cancer. However too much vitamin A with an accumulation in the body may cause loss of appetite, hair loss, rough and dry skin, chronic sores, swelling arms and legs and bone pain. Children may have brittle cartilage and bone. Adults with a high accumulation of vitamin A may have tumors in brain, liver and the infections. Vitamin D This comes from two sources: 1) Created by the skin and 2) food such as green vegetables, meat, milk, fish, egg, butter, yeast and certain types of mold. Vitamin D functions: 1) Control the balance between calcium and phosphorus. 2) Help increase the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the intestine. 3) Help control the phosphate level at the kidney. Vitamin E This is a pale yellow and viscous substance. It can be found in soy milk and various vegetable oils such as cottonseed oil, sunflower oil and extracted wheat germ oil. Vitamin E can also be found in foods such as fats, eggs, margarine, and nuts. The most important function of vitamin E is as an antioxidation agent. It also helps support the creation of muscle cell tissues and red blood corpuscles. Vitamin E is used as a treatment for heart disease and certain vascular diseases, and also used in skin care products and anti aging products. There is no apparent harm for excessive amounts and it is stored in the muscle and fat in our body. Vitamin K This can be found in green vegetable such as spinach, kale, cabbage and broccoli. Vitamin K is also found in meat, mostly in pork liver. The human intestines can also create vitamin K. Most people do not have any symptoms from the lack of vitamin K. It helps the liver to synthetise substances that aid blood coagulation such as Prothrombin. Lack of vitamin K will result in slow blood coagulation or continuous bleeding if there is any wound.

38 OFF BEAT World news World’s Most Stupid Burglar? (USA) A Minnesota man came home to find his house unlocked, cash and other items missing, and the accused burglar’s Facebook profile open on his computer, authorities said.

According to the criminal complaint, a resident called police and told them he found his house in disarray, the front door unlocked and a screen removed from a side window. He also saw that “Nick Dub’s” Facebook profile was open on his computer, the complaint said. Items missing included cash, credit cards, keys and a watch. That same day, the resident recognised him on the street from his Facebook picture and told police, who found him wearing a watch like one taken in the burglary, the complaint said. When police checked, he admitted entering the house, swapping his rainsoaked clothes for some from the house, logging on to Facebook and taking the items reported stolen, the complaint said.

Bali Hijack Alert Passenger ‘mistook cockpit for toilet’ (Bali) following a report from the pilot of a hijacking attempt after a passenger started thumping on the cockpit door. The passenger, wearing flip-flops, white shorts and a T-shirt, was dragged off the plane by heavily armed air force personnel and arrested by police. The alert prompted a shutdown of the airport and the diversion of several flights. After this, the crew handcuffed him and put him in a seat at the back of the plane until it arrived in Bali. An Australian passenger who sparked a hijack alert on a flight to Bali has denied being drunk and claimed he banged on the door of the cockpit after mistaking it for the toilet, said Indonesian police. Security forces rushed to the airport on the Indonesian island when the Boeing 737-800 from Brisbane touched down

“According to him, he was not drunk but suffering from depression due to a family problem,” the spokesman said, adding police were waiting for alcohol test results but there was no smell of drink on his breath when he was detained. He said that “He banged on the cockpit door as he thought it was the toilet door.”

Spanish Zoo Vet Accidentally Shoots Keeper Instead of Gorilla (Canary Islands) A Spanish zoo vet shot a keeper with a tranquilliser dart when a gorilla escape drill went awry, knocking out the unfortunate victim who spent the next three days in hospital. Zoo workers ran a drill “simulating the escape of a gorilla”, said the Loro Park Zoo, a popular holiday destination in Spain’s Canary Islands off the coast of Africa. “One of the animal keepers was accidentally hit by a tranquilliser dart which the veterinarians have to have ready for such cases,” a zoo spokesperson said in a statement. A Spanish newspaper reported that the keeper had been dressed in a gorilla suit, confusing the vet who then shot him with the dart.

Thieves steal 10 truckloads of beer during World Cup (Germany) German police are hunting for thieves who made off with 10 truckloads of beer while the country was distracted by World Cup football fever. “We’re following up on two or three leads,” said a police spokeswoman from the western city of Krefeld, where the pallets of beer were stolen from a warehouse. The thieves carried away some 300,000 litres (80,000 gallons) of canned beer while Germans were transfixed by their team’s heroics in Brazil, beating Argentina in the final. UK driver fails theory test 110 times (Britain) Wannabe drivers in Britain are failing their theory tests scores of times with one woman being unable to pass a record 110 times.

Sinatra’s first driver’s license sold (USA)

The woman has the biggest number of failures under her belt, but is followed by many more including a 30-year-old man who has had 86 unsuccessful attempts.

A collector has snapped up Frank Sinatra’s first driver’s license at an online auction of cinema memorabilia. A British woman holds the record for failing the practical element of her driving test. She finally passed on her 24th attempt.

Frank Sinatra’s first New Jersey driver’s license with his last name misspelled sold for $US15,757. Sinatra’s license, numbered “549631” and bearing a large red, centred stamping of “1934,” drew much interest from bidders. It was issued to Francis Sintra, 841 Garden St, Hoboken, NJ, but he signed it Francis Sinatra in black ink. Sinatra’s physical description reads: “Age 19, Weight 130, Color W, Color Hair BRN, Sex M, Color Eyes BLUE, Height 5.8.” The identification card has a December 31, 1934, expiration date. Accompanying the license is a 1940 letter to the state Commissioner of Motor Vehicles from the lawyer of a man who had been involved in a car crash with Sinatra,

insisting that Sinatra’s driving privileges be revoked until he pays up.

Police in a Portland suburb have a sticky situation on their hands: for more than a month, mysterious vandals have been smearing pastries on cars, depositing donuts in lawns and leaving cakes strewn

“It’s an amazing piece that ties Sinatra to his birthplace, where he is still a hometown hero of the one-square-mile town of Hoboken, dating back to the days where he must have still been dreaming that he would someday make it big - here and anywhere,” said Bobby Livingston, executive vice president of RR Auction of Boston.

In the weeks since, the pastry perpetrators have occasionally turned to healthier fare, leaving yogurt, bread and potato salad on vehicles and in driveways, although most of the incidents have involved sweets, said police spokesman Lieutenant Mike Rouches.

Shop Manager Pelted With Sex Toys in Hold-Up (Australia) A shop manager was pelted with sex toys by an intruder wearing a wig and crotchless pants in an Australian erotica store stick-up, a police spokesman said. The man forced his way into the Brisbane adult shop through the roof just before 5:30 a.m., setting off the alarm.

The 18-centimetre-square cubes are used for decorative purposes because they are harvested unripe and are inedible.

“Upon being disturbed the man threw a number of items he was attempting to steal out of his hands and proceeded to climb back through the roof,” police said in a statement. “Police located the man climbing down from the roof of the business. Obviously what he was wearing was pretty amusing. You’ve got to see the lighter side of it.”

“We believe the suspects are kids in the neighborhood,” Rouches said, adding that police don’t necessarily need to arrest the perpetrators and could settle for an apology, but would like the late-night capers to stop.

“There’s definitely a funny side to it,” the manager, Fiona Coldrick, told The Australian newspaper.

Tourism to recover fast with more returning during high season end of the year The tourism sector is now confident that foreign tourists will be returning during the high season later in the year with tourist numbers reaching 26.8 millions this year.

projected which is more than the 26.5 million projected for the previous year. The increase in tourist numbers should generate about 1.9 trillion baht in income for the country.

Deputy chairman for tourism development of the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) Thanes Worasarun and former TCT chairman Kongkrit Hirankit were in agreement that the tourism sector of Thailand has come through its lowest point during the month of June.

They said that significant improvements should start to be visible from the month of August onward and by September, tourism numbers will experience positive growth.

As of the present, operators are more confident of the security issue which is reflected in the continued influx of foreign tourist despite the fact that the country is still under martial law. This has raised confidence that the tourism outlook for the country for the remaining part of the year will see an increase of about 15 million tourists. The total number of tourists for 2014 should tally with the 26.8 million tourists

The three main groups of tourists to Thailand are from Korea, Japan and China and projections are that tourist numbers will increase to about 28 million for the year 2015. This should bring in an estimated 2.2 trillion baht in tourist income to the country. “After the resolution of the political crisis in the country, tourist growth statistics has rebounded to two figures. The lowest being only 18% and it has stayed that way for a while. We plotted a graph and it showed that projections were accurate because Thailand remains the destination of choice in the region and we possess major strengths in the service sector over our competitors,” Thanes Worasarun, deputy chairman for tourism development for TCT said. Kongkrit Hirankit, former chairman of TCT also said, “If this year’s tourism figures show zero or no growth, then we expect that in 2015 the figures should show no less than 10% growth. This is because of historical trends in the tourism sector for the Thailand. Whenever there is zero growth in a particular year then the following year will almost always experience positive growth.”

42 Pet Care Summer With Your Pets Around Town! As many families embark on vacations this summer, Hua Hin Today has been searching around town where to leave your pet while away or to bring him along with you. When planning a vacation, don’t forget your beloved companions. Plan for them too. If you are planning to take them with you, make sure that they will travel with the best comfort (with plenty of potty and exercise stops every 2 hours) and that they are welcome in your hotel choice, homes renting or friends place, etc. If you are leaving them behind, make sure you have a trusted pet-sitter or boarding facility. Check them out well in advance of your trip and make reservations, provide them with a list of medications and instructions such as how to feed, exercise, etc. Leave the name of your vet as well as friends and neighbours who know your pet. Leave your own details and how to be reached. Where to leave your pet while on holiday? Hua Hin Pet HomeStay 300 Baht per night with food included. Get information on their Facebook page or phone 095 428 7954 The Dog Grooming and Spa Dog Between 200 to 500 Baht per night depending of the size of the pet. No food Included. Get information by phoning 0866882338 or 0850434400

Visit the Vet A visit to the veterinarian for a spring or early summer check-up is a must. Keep vaccinations up-to-date. This is a time when most pets come into contact with other animals in parks, beaches, lakes and fields. Don’t let your pets roam the streets. Veterinarians see numerous fight injuries and bite wounds in the summer as well as animals hit or run over by cars. Wasps, bees and hornets are also a problem during the summer. Although there is no real way for your pets to avoid being stung, they can be treated with antihistamines to reduce the swelling that follows an attack if swelling appears, see your vet! Fleas, ticks and other parasites may infest your pet. There are many good products available to keep fleas and ticks off your pet. Check with your vet! Made in the Shade Give your animal companion plenty of cool, clean water at all times. Dogs can only sweat through the pads of their feet and by panting. Evaporation from the wet surfaces of their mouth and nose helps lower their body temperature. Do not leave your pet shut in an empty house or tied outside while you’re on vacation. Know the Overheating Warning Signs Heat exhaustion is one of the most common ailments of pets during the summer months, so pet owners should be cautious. If it’s an exceptionally hot day, keep your dog or cat in the house with you and a fan and/or air conditioning. If it’s too hot outside for you, it’s too hot outside for your pet. Signs of heatstroke may include: hot skin, rapid panting, twitching muscles, salivation and a dazed expression. Wrap your pet in a towel with cool, not COLD water. Cool him down by giving him ice cubes to lick (as cold water will upset his stomach worse and hasten dehydration). Let him lie in front of a fan. To prevent heat exhaustion, make sure your outside pets have access to shade, fresh water and that you check on them at least several times a day to make sure they’re all right.! No Parking! Never leave your pet in a parked car; not even if you open the windows or park in the shade. The temperature in the car can increase rapidly and cause heat exhaustion, heat stroke or even death. On a 30 C degrees day, the temperature inside your car, even with the windows open a bit, will climb to 40 C degrees in 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, it will go up to 50 C degrees or even higher!

Pet Friendly Restaurants: Despite the huge selections of outdoor restaurants in town only a few of them will allow pets. If your dog is well behaved and/or a small breed or a puppy and just ask nicely for permission at the beginning you shouldn’t have any problem. Tried and Approved by Milo for those dates out in town Don’t forget to always bring along his essential-bag (always have it ready to go), blanket or towel so he can lay down, food, water and his favourite chewing-toy. Pick-up a table in a corner to make sure your dog won’t be too much distracted by other clients. Always have him on a leash. Week night dates: Sakura Japanese Restaurant on soi 94 Week-end family dinner: Chom Talay near Dusit Hotel in the direction of Cha-Am Week-end after dinner drinks: Lets’ Sea near the Grand Hyatt For week-end Brunches: Anantasila in Koh Takiab if you seat on the right side of the restaurant they will allow you to bring your pet. Beaches that allows dogs in town: Koh Takiab Koh Tao - Koh Sanoi Beaches Cha-Am Beach “The must have bag “ to carry with you when you travel with your pet. Always have your “Pet Travel Essentials” ready to go with everything that your beloved companion would need for any type of trip. Pictures of the kit: ( send you later I need to make one) - Blanket or towel so he can lay down, - Food, - Water, - His favourite chewing-toy, or a bone. - 2 containers - Leash and harness - Couples of plastic bags in case of potty accident - Wipes towels - Some treats to give when good behaviour I came across this Mobile Pet Organizer on the internet that hooks over the back of the seat. I think this would be cool to put Milo’s leash, harness, water, food and toys in the car. I hate things all over the car, so this would keep it all neat and organised! I love the fact that it wraps up into a bag, which makes it super easy to grab when we get back home! You can find similar items on the basement of Market Village at the “Everything for 60 baht” shop. Summer is the time for fun, outdoor activities, swimming, picnics and vacations. All of us love to share theses summer activities with our beloved companions, but it is important to remember that some activities can be dangerous for our pets. By following a few simple rules, it is easy to keep your pet safe while still having fun in the sun. HUA HIN TODAY, August 2014

Make a Safe Splash Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool (not all dogs are good swimmers). Introduce your pets to water gradually and make sure they wear flotation devices when they are on boats. Rinse your dog off after swimming to remove chlorine or salt from his fur, and try to keep your dog from drinking pool water, which contains chlorine and other chemicals that could cause stomach upset. Be Street Smart Never force your dog to run in hot, humid weather. Watch out for hot pavements, sensitive paws burn easily. After a walk or run, check your dog’s paws to make sure they are okay. Watch the exercise and diet of your pets. Overeating can result in overheating. Eating less is healthier for them. Do not encourage exercise during the hottest part of the day. Early mornings and evenings are the best times for exercising.
