Songkran Festival or known as Thailand Water Festival, is the most important festival for Thai people. Celebrated as the traditional Thai New Year, Thai people sprinkle water on the elders in show of respect and pay respect to Buddha images.

Songkran Festival, the Water Festival, is very closely associated with water. Originally, people gently pour water on elders and family hands to give good fortune, but now it has evolved to splashing strangers on the streets with water, either with a water gun or a bucket of water, all in the spirit of good fun. International tourists have mixed preference about this. Hua Hin Kite Board World Cup 2011

H

ua Hin turned celestially fabulous again and was a great success as Asian and European kite boarders attended the Hua Hin Kite Board World Cup 2011 from 12 to19 March.

The opening ceremony for this event took place on 12 March at 4 p.m. on the beach at the Intercontinental Resort Hua Hin. It was attended by the Prachuab Khirikhan Governor Mr. Weera Sriwattanatrakul, the Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Jira Pongpaiboon and more than 100 kite board competitors. ...Read more on page 4...

I hope my picture of 25 years ago is appreciated. Revenge of nature?

Apart from talking about it, there is little action of environmental groups.

There is practically no evidence of real endeavours but we keep on discussing, great symposiums , presentations, people come from afar to manifest and celebrate their visions but it all than somehow strands on political beaches and nature lets us know it doesn´t agree.

We have solutions to recycle plastic bags and bottles so someone else can make money on it, but the money unfortunately does not flow back into nature.

Saw a Utube movie of a world famous circus, “teaching” baby elephants to follow orders, chained up and tortured rather than trained, completely dehydrated in order to learn to obey. Farang trainers stranding around laughing as the baby Elephant cried in agony and pain. Any political or governmental body take any immediate action or do we have to discuss it first in Helsinki in March next year? Amasing Sukkassart Institute of Health is now really doing a lot of alternative health programmes. Saw a little boy,

seven years old from Bangkok that could hardly move due to a brain malfunction. After treatment by Dr. Buathon over several weeks, the boy moves , talks , laughs and is a very happy little boy enjoying his own progress.

Amazing Villa Maroc once again hosted a Spa visit by yours truly. It is a bit out of the way on Pranburi Coast, but worthwhile. Check out my Spa review. A presentation of the Thai Prachuab Revenue Office at the Banyan Resort, started off with the remark “nobody wants to pay taxes”. A trip through the tax jungle highlighted some of the unanswered questions. It remains a game between accountants, customers and Tax office. Will it ever be transparent and clear? The long awaited SOS bar at the Hilton was supposed to open on Friday the 18th but moved a week or two later due to bad weather. Thirst can be quenched at the Beerhouse in the mean time. CrashCarBurn band of South Africa performed at the Beerhouse as well. Not exactly my music but it filled the place and the youngsters stretched their guitars to the max. as well as my eardrums.

Very much in fashion these days are wine tastings and wine dinners. Wine

makers from all over the world come to Hua Hin to present their wines at well respected places, usually with a gourmet dinner at which the executive Chefs try their best to present their best fresh food with vintage wines.

We learn a lot from the winemakers such as Torres, Hardy, Darenberg etc. and I must, however say that sitting at the Vineyards up Pala U road at sunset, with the amazing views of the Monsoon Valley and hills and a bottle of pure Shiraz, personally and graciously served by excellent host, Khun Hanna, is another grand evening in Paradise . By the way, there will be a new Executive Chef at Monsoon in April with a promising new menue. Fortunately Hanna will stay and be among us another year.

We offer at least 10 different kinds of curries from North to South with rice noodles, yellow noodles or spaghetti. Famous Kao Soi from Chiang Mai and other goodies are served at Thai local prices.

We also have a fresh vegetable buffet, Thai dessert specialties, Ice cream and herbal teas and other fresh drinks.

WBA - PABA Boxing 100 ปี หัวหิน มหกรรมมวยโลก

T

he boxing championship WBA - PABA will take place in Hua Hin on 11 April 2011 from 3 - 5 p.m. at the Phon Kingphet Memorial Park. This big event is broadcasted via the Channel 5 Thailand, too.

This year’s highlights are the 110-pound light flyweight WBC bout between Saen Muang Lei Koh Kiat Yim and a foreign boxer, the 105-pound minimum weight PABA championship of Phaiphaarob Koh Kiat Yim and a foreign boxer, the 105-pound minimum weight PABA Interim of Big Mee Koh Kiat Yim and a foreign boxer, and the 107-pound WBC bout of female boxers: Nong Muay Koh Kiat Yim and a foreign boxer.

The upcoming boxing championships are held annually in Hua Hin on 16 April to commemorate Phon Kingphet, the first worldclass boxer of Thailand. Born in Hua Hin on 12 February B.E. 2478, Phon’s real name was Mana Seedokbuab. He liked boxing since he was a schoolboy. With a dream to be a world champion, Phon was trained by Niyom Thongchit and Thongthot Intarathat, a manager and an owner of Kingphet Boxing Gym. On 16 April B.E. 2503, Phon won his first flyweight world championship against

Pascal Peres at the Lumpini Boxing Stadium.

He won from Peres one more time at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Phon was also awarded many championships before he officially quit boxing in B.E. 2509. The legendary boxer of Thailand passed away on 30 May B.E. 2525. To honor this Hua Hin local boxer, his statue was erected at the Phon Kingphet Memorial Park in Hua Hin. A Buddhist ceremony is held every year to pay respect to him.

The boxing championship bouts of the WBS-PABA are free and anyone can attend.

Hua Hin Kite Board

T

he competition for this event was divided into 3 categories: the World Class, the Grand Slam and the Free Style kite boarding.

The trophies were awarded to winners of each category by Mr. Suwat Liptapanlop, the former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand. Not only is the Hua Hin Kite Board World Cup 2011 an annual water sport event of Hua Hin, but it also encourages Thai youths to participate and hone their kite boarding skills. This event will enable kite boarding to be an option for national and international sport competitions.

Above all, it will promote Hua Hin as one of the premium venues for kite boarding to the world.

added that the recent earthquake and Tsunami in Japan, fortunately did not affect the event as all competitors registering attended the event.

The weather, particularly in the afternoon, was ideal for the competition. The closing ceremony was chaired by Mr. Suwat on 19 March and he handed out the trophies to the winners. He said that this year’s event was highly successful in spite off strong winds and some bad weather. There were kite boarders from 30 countries in Europe competing in the event, which was held for the second time in Hua Hin. In addition, since the Kite Boarding Association of Thailand has been officially registered, Thai kite boarders can compete in both regional and international competitions.

In the next few years, the association will

nominate Thai contestants to take part in an Olympic kite boarding in Brazil.

Throughout the event, many Thai and foreign tourists gathered on the Hua Hin beach to watch the competition which was also aired on TV in Thailand and many other nations.

This year’s highlight also included a beach fashion show with Thai models.

Thanks to its huge success this year, the next Hua Hin Kite Board World Cup 2011will definitely be held in Hua Hin again.

Hua Hin to promote Sports and Culture T

he Deputy Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced that Hua Hin will welcome and impress its visitors with local sports facilities and culture events whilst solving traffic problems and other problems in the ‘red light areas’ in the city. Mr.Prakit Piriyakiat, the TAT Deputy Director, said that Hua Hin was a much favored venue for events of various kinds of sport, such as golf , kite boarding, polo, tennis, sailing and marathon events. Hua Hin beaches and the city can easily accommodate these events which take place regularly. This is a good occasion to encourage more Thai and foreign visitors to come to Hua Hin. Some events have been published in many other countries worldwide, making Hua Hin a wellknown tourist destination among foreigners, particularly the Scandinavian and European ones. Now, the city is reportedly as popular as Rio de Janeiro in Brazil whose annual samba is globally known.

Apart from the sport events, Hua Hin boasts several local and national traditions, namely the Thai New Year or Songkran, the Buddhist Lent, the Loy Krathong Festival, the Chinese New Year or even Christmas. Another problem in Hua Hin concerns the traffic congestion caused by bad urban planning and lack of control by the local police. The TAT Deputy Director urged the Hua Hin authority to study how Bangkok Metropolitan officers deal with traffic in the China Town and adapt it in Hua Hin as this is an effective way to solve traffic congestion in the city.

“Hua Hin’s also famous for its local products like Thai clothes made by Khomapas and hand-made cloth of Baan Khao Tao. The Hua Hin Municipality should foster this local intellect as it allows local people to earn more income and it symbolizes the Hua Hin city,” said Mr. Prakit. “But Hua Hin needs to pay more attention to its traffic systems, especially during the weekend, as the Petchakasem Road, which is the only main road of the city, is very congested by visiting cars. It was announced again, that the Hua Hin Municipality and its traffic police are actively working on this.

he mangrove forests encompassing Baan Khao Takiab Community and Khao Krailas will become a preservation area for further studies on mangrove forest ecological systems and prevention against currently threatening global warming.

องผูว้ า่ การการท่องเทีย่ วแห่งประเทศไทย เน้นย�ำ้ การดูแลพัฒนาเมืองหัวหินทางการท่องเทีย่ วให้ใช้การกีฬาทุกชนิดประเภทในระดับ ชาติทอ้ งถิน่ และวัฒนธรรมงานประเพณีรบั ผูม้ าเยือนทัง้ ชาวไทยและต่างชาติ แต่ตอ้ งแกไขปัญหาการจราจร แหล่งโลกีย์ นายประกิตติ์ พิรยิ ะเกียรติ รองผูว้ า่ การการท่องเทีย่ วแห่งประเทศไทยฝ่ายสือ่ สารการตลาด เปิดเผยว่าการทีท่ งั้ ภาครัฐและเอกชนในระดับ ชาติได้มาจัดการแข่งขันกีฬาต่าง ๆ เช่น ไคท์บอร์ด โปโลม้า เทนนิส เรือใบ การเดินและวิง่ เทิดพระ เกียรติ ฯลฯ ซึง่ ก็มที า่ นสุวจั น์ ลิปตพัลลภ อดีตรองนายกรัฐมนตรี คุณกฤป โรจนเสถียร ประธาน ชมรมพิทกั ษ์หวั หิน และอีกหลาย ๆ ท่านซึง่ ก็จะใช้ทงั้ ชายหาดทะเลและทีต่ า่ ง ๆ ของเมืองหัวหิน เป็นสถานทีจ่ ดั งานตามห้วงระยะเวลาในแต่ละเดือนนัน้ ถือว่าเป็นสิง่ ทีด่ เี นือ่ งจากกีฬาแต่ละชนิด ประเภทนัน้ มันเป็นการชักจูงให้ผคู้ นทัง้ ชาวไทยและต่างชาติได้เข้ามาเทีย่ วชมซึง่ เมือ่ มาแล้วก็ยงั จะ มีการใช้จา่ ยในเรือ่ งทีพ่ กั อาหาร ขนส่ง และอืน่ ๆ ท�ำให้รายได้เม็ดเงินก็จะตกอยูก่ บั ประชาชนผู้ ประกอบการกลายเป็นระบบเศรษฐกิจจรและเคลือ่ นทีเ่ ข้ามา และทีส่ ำ� คัญนัน้ กิจกรรมงานบาง อย่างก็ยงั มีการถ่ายทอดทีวผี า่ นออกไปยังทัว่ โลก แต่ละประเทศซึง่ มันก็ทำ� ให้ชอื่ เสียงของ เมือง“หัวหิน” นัน้ ได้รจู้ กั มากยิง่ ขึน้ จึงท�ำให้ทงั้ กลุม่ นักท่องเทีย่ วชาวยุโรป สแกนดิเนเวีย ฯลฯ เมือ่ ทราบก็จะเข้ามายังประเทศไทย แล้วก็มายังเมืองหัวหินเหมือนกับประเทศบราซิลทีม่ มี หกรรมการ เต้นแชมบ้าประจ�ำปี นายประกิตติฯ์ ยังกล่าวอีกว่านอกเหนือจากการจัดเทศกาลกีฬาต่าง ๆ แล้ว สิง่ หนึง่ ทีภ่ าครัฐในท้องถิน่ และชาวเมืองหัวหิน จะต้องช่วยกันดูแลอนุรกั ษ์และจัดท�ำให้เป็นประจ�ำ นัน่ ก็คอื งานประเพณีอย่างเช่น ปีใหม่ สงกรานต์ เข้าพรรษา-ออกพรรษา ลอยกระทง ตรุษจีน คริตร์มาส ฯลฯ ซึง่ งานเหล่านีเ้ มือ่ มันมีวนั เวลาทีก่ ำ� หนดเอาไว้แล้วในปฏิทนิ ของเดือนในแต่ละปี แล้ว มันก็จะท�ำให้ชาวต่างชาติได้กำ� หนดระยะเวลาทีจ่ ะมาได้ ซึง่ ในส่วนนีก้ จ็ ะได้ทงั้ รายได้และขาย ความเป็นไทย ๆ ย่านกิจกรรมงานประเพณีให้ผคู้ นได้รจู้ กั อีกด้วยในส่วนของสถานบันเทิงแหล่งโลกียน์ นั้ เมืองหัวหินไม่มคี วามจ�ำเป็นอะไรที่ จะไปสนับสนุนส่งเสริม เพราะว่าต่างชาติสว่ นหนึง่ ทีเ่ ข้ามานัน้ เขาต้องการเมืองทีเ่ ป็นธรรมชาติ สงบ พบกับผูค้ นทีย่ มิ้ แย้มแจ่มใสและงาน ประเพณีตา่ ง ๆ สิง่ เหล่านีแ้ หละคือจุดขายทีแ่ ท้จริงของเมืองหัวหินจากอดีตจนถึงปัจจุบนั “ได้มโี อกาสมาทีเ่ มืองหัวหินบ่อยครัง้ ซึง่ ก็พบว่า เมืองหัวหินนัน้ มีอาหารประเภท “ซีฟดู ส์” มีชอื่ เสียงและอร่อยทีส่ ดุ ดังไปทัว่ โลก รวมทัง้ อาหารไทย ๆ อย่าง ผัดไท หอยทอด ก๋วยจับ๊ ก๋วยเตีย๋ วหมู และตลาดโต้รงุ่ นัน้ ก็ยงั เป็นทีเ่ ชิดหน้าชูตารับแขกบ้านเมืองทัง้ ชาวไทยและต่างชาติได้เป็นอย่างดียามค�ำ่ คืน แต่วา่ รูปแบบ ความเป็นระเบียบไม่ดที งั้ การวางร้านทีแ่ ออัดเส้นทางเข้าออกทีค่ บั แคบ ซึง่ ก็อยากจะให้ดรู ปู แบบของเยาวราชในกรุงเทพฯ เขาจัดระเบียบได้ ดี” “สินค้าพืน้ บ้านพืน้ เมืองของหัวหินนัน้ ดีมาก โดยเฉพาะเสือ้ ผ้าพิมพ์ของโขมพัสตร์ ผ้าทอมือบ้านเขาเต่า สิง่ เหล่านีจ้ ะต้องคงเอาไว้ เนือ่ งจากมันเป็นจุดขายทีด่ ี เพราะว่าเมือ่ ผูค้ นทีม่ าในเมืองหัวหินแล้วอยากจะมีสงิ่ ของติดมือกับไปก็จะหาซือ้ ได้เพือ่ เป็นทีร่ ะลึก”

“ส�ำหรับในส่วนของปัญหาของเมืองหัวหินนัน้ ก็คอื เรือ่ งระบบการจราจร ซึง่ ก็พบว่ามันมีเส้นทางเมนหลักอยูท่ างเดียวคือถนน เพชรเกษม ซึง่ เมือ่ มีกจิ กรรมงานแห่ขบวนหรือว่าช่วงวันหยุดแล้วรถมันก็จะติดกันมาก ซึง่ ก็ทราบว่าทางเทศบาลฯ และ เจ้าหน้าทีต่ ำ� รวจ ก็ได้ดแู ลแก้ไขอยูซ่ งึ่ ถ้าระบบการจราจรดีแล้วก็เชือ่ ว่าจะท�ำให้ผคู้ นทีม่ าเมืองหัวหินนัน้ ไม่เดือดร้อน” นายประกิตติฯ์ กล่าว

Red Cross Fair 2011 in Hua Hin

T

he Retro Hua Hin, one of the most famous festive events of Hua Hin, will coincide All the activities have been carried out for 7 years with the Red Cross Fair 2011 from 28 April to in close collaboration with Mr. Prasong Pitoolkitja, 8 May at the 19-Rai Queen Sirikit Memorial the former Governor of Prachuab Khirikhan, and Park.

Since the mangrove forest area in Khao Krailas is one of the most near-perfect environmental areas of Thailand, it is worthwhile witnessing the progress. The next step is to set up an information center, small shelters and wooden bridges to accommodate visitors throughout the area.

However, all these steps will cost approximately 1.8 million Baht to complete.

According to Mr. Somsak Khiewkham, the chairman of Baan Khao Takiab Environmental Conservation Group, local people and fishermen of Baan Khao Takiab are now taking of care of a 20-Rai mangrove near the Khao Krailas Buddhist Temple. To balance the ecological system there, they planted mangroves and red wood and released Nile tilapia, sea crabs and vinegar crabs.

Doing so will enable the marine fauna to breed.

Moreover, the area will serve as a research center for students and academics.

Apart from the mangrove forests in Khao Krailas, there is another one at Khlong Takiab.

Encompassing 64 Rai areas, the mangrove forest in Khlong Takiab has been trespassed and owned by investors from Hua Hin and Bangkok. Local people are now working with Baan Khao Takiab Environmental Conservation Group to claim back the area. If they are successful, it will serve as a 2nd conservation area allowing local fishermen to live and work while helping to prevent global warming.

เขาตะเกียบ ครู – นักเรียนโรงเรียนบ้านตะเกียบ และ พระครูขจิตธรรม โสภณ เจ้าอาวาสวัดสุขส�ำราญ ซึง่ ดูแลวัดเขาไกรลาศ ซึง่ พระคุณเจ้าท่าน ก็อนุมตั ใิ ห้ใช้พนื้ ทีด่ งั กล่าวซึง่ เป็นของวัดฯ เป็นทีจ่ ดั ท�ำโครงการซึง่ ขณะนี้ ทุกอย่างเริ่มที่จะเป็นป่าชายเลนที่สมบูรณ์ในระดับหนึง่ จึงท�ำให้มีทั้ง นักศึกษา นักเรียน และสือ่ มวลชนของทีวใี นกรุงเทพฯ มาถ่ายท�ำเผย แพร่เพือ่ ให้ผคู้ นได้รจู้ กั และน�ำเอาไปเป็นโครงการรูปแบบมากมายหลาย แห่งส�ำหรับโครงการทีต่ นเองและคณะกรรมการฯ จะด�ำเนินการต่อไป เพือ่ ให้เป็นทีใ่ ห้ความรูท้ มี่ นั่ คงและถาวรต่อไปนัน้ ก็คอื ทีท่ ำ� การ-ศาลา ทีพ่ กั เส้นทางการเข้าชมป่าชายเลนเป็นสะพานไม้ การขยายพืน้ ทีป่ ลูกป่า ซึง่ ก็คาดว่าจะต้องใช้เงินงบประมาณอีก 1.8 ล้านบาท ซึง่ ถ้าในสัดส่วนนี้ ส�ำเร็จแล้วก็จะท�ำให้การต้อนรับเข้าเยีย่ มชมพืน้ ทีฯ่ นีส้ มบูรณ์มากยิง่ ขึน้ นายสมศักดิฯ์ ยังกล่าวอีกว่า ส�ำหรับพืน้ ทีป่ า่ ชายเลนนัน้ ก็ยงั มีอยูอ่ กี แห่ง หนึง่ คือ “คลองตะเกียบ” ซึง่ มีเนือ้ ทีอ่ ยูป่ ระมาณ 64 ไร่เศษ แต่ได้ถกู บุกรุกและออกเป็นเอกสารสิทธิข์ อง “นายทุน” จากกรุงเทพฯ และ หัวหิน ซึง่ ในเรือ่ งนีต้ นเองและกลุม่ ชาวบ้านฯ ก็ได้มกี ารเรียกร้องเพือ่ ขอ คืนซึง่ เรือ่ งก็อยูใ่ นชัน้ ศาลซึง่ ถ้าเราได้พนื้ ทีป่ า่ ชายเลนดังกล่าว ซึง่ เป็น พืน้ ทีท่ มี่ มี าตัง้ แต่รนุ่ ปูย่ า่ ตายาย ซึง่ ปัจจุบนั นีก้ ย็ งั มีปา่ แสม โกงกาง และ น�ำ้ ทะเลท่วมถึง ให้เป็นทางกายภาพได้แล้วก็จะด�ำเนินการอนุรกั ษ์พนื้ ที่ ดังกล่าวให้เป็นป่าชายเลนแห่งที่ 2 และเป็นทีอ่ ยูอ่ าศัยของกลุม่ ชาวเรือ ประมงเล็กพืน้ ที่ และเป็นพืน้ ทีช่ มุ่ น�ำ้ เพือ่ รองรับความชุม่ ฉ�ำ่ ของทาง ธรรมชาติปอ้ งกันสภาวะของโลกร้อนสืบต่อไป

With the main aim to raise funds for activities of the Hua Hin Red Cross Center, promote tourism in the city and encourage local people to foster traditional art and culture, this year’s events will focus especially on solidarity and unity of all Thai people to celebrate His Majesty the King’s 84th anniversary on 5 December.

from governmental and private organizations and local students, performances to honor His Majesty by local students, selling of the One-Tambon-One-Product (OTOP) as well as the fascinating light and sound show relating historical background of Hua Hin. This will enable visitors to know more about the much beloved beachfront town of Thailand.

Moreover, mini-concerts of many famous Thai singers and actors will be held together with the big parade to honor His Majesty around the Hua Hin town.

According to Mr. Somchai Bamrungsap, the District Chief of Hua Hin, currently, a lot of people are staying in the city whether temporarily or permanently. The more people are living here, the more actively the Red Cross staff are working. The staff is now providing help to the poor, the disabled and those affected by natural disasters. Besides, they represent the Bangkok Red Cross Headquarters on blood and organ donations and the support of boy scouts and girl guides.

Pranburi’s Market – 200 years old Yesterday once more – The Carpenters P

ranburi is located close to Hua Hin. Founded 200 years ago during the Ayudhaya period, the Pranburi market used to serve as a gathering point and business area for both Thai and foreign merchants, especially Indian sellers. Since the former district office was moved from Pranburi Railway Station to the Pranburi intersection on Petchkasem Road, the once bustling old market lost a lot of it´s cultural heritage and glamour.

Wilas Taengket and local people from Pranburi communities are organizing a walking street to the Pranburi old market.

This project aims to promote eco-tourism on Thai culture and tradition, preserve old Thai wooden houses in the market area and in particular promote local business and boost community unity in accordance with His Majesty the King’s self-sufficiency principles.

To revive the good old days back to the Pranburi old market, the The newly renovated Pranburi Old Market boasts traditional Chairman of the Pranburi Old Market Conservation Group Mr. Thai utensils used in the past, some souvenirs, old books,

handicrafts and local products, namely Thai desserts and traditional Thai coffee. Visitors can go back to the yesteryear and admire its charm while taking pictures on the second floor of the old wooden house which is now transformed into a Thai coffee shop.

Visitors are now welcome to admire romantic, sweet and lowdown charm at the Pranburi old market. Open every Saturday at 4 p.m., it is located 1 kilometer after the present Pranburi district office. And 2 kilometers before the Pranburi railway station.

Thailand’s demand for new homes remains strong

D

emand for new homes in Thailand remained robust in the first quarter despite measures passed by the Bank of Thailand limiting loans to 90 per cent of the value of condo units.

A survey by The Nation reported that the top 10 Thai listed property developers recorded presales of almost THB40 billion (US$1.32 billion) from January 1 to the middle of March.

Pruksa Real Estate, for example reported THB5.5 billion (US$181.5 million) in presales; Sansiri reported THB4 billion (US$132 million); Asian Property Development THB2.1 billion (US$69.3 million); SC Asset THB1.3 billion (US$42.9 million); and Supalai and LPN Development reported THB2.5 billion (US$82.5 million) each.

Asian Property Development’s chief executive Anuphong Asavabhokhin said his presales in the first quarter of 2011 were much more than 2010, when presales reached only THB900 million (US$29.7 million). He attributed the increase to the improved operating environment and in particular to political and economic stability. Anuphong said there had been stronger demand for single detached houses and townhouses than in the first quarter of last year because home-buyers believed that mass-transit routes to outer suburbs of Bangkok would be completed within the next two years.

There continues to be demand for condominium units, but growth in demand in the first quarter was slower than in the corresponding period last year because fewer new condominium projects have been launched this year, he said.

came from townhouse projects. Prasert said most of the demand for new residences – both low- and high-rise – was “real” demand, rather than speculative buying.

There has been little impact on demand for condominium units from the Bank of Thailand’s new rules restricting mortgages for condos to 90 per cent of value. This is because most new condominium projects are taking 18 to 24 months from down payment to completion, and this is sufficient time to cover the cost of the down payment, amounting to 10 per cent of the value of the residence, he said, adding that in the case of existing condominium projects, most buyers purchasing completed units that are ready for them to move in have saved enough money to make the 10-per-cent down payment.

he Hua Hin Municipality, in close cooperation with the State Railway of Thailand and the Community Organizations Development Institute(Public Organization) (CODI), will set up a pilot project entitled, ‘Baan Man Khong’, for 3 communities in Hua Hin, namely Klai Kang Won, Tawan Si Thong and Faa Si Khram. Once completed, this project will be carried out for the community located along the Hua Hin railway.

According to Mr. Narong Krittikhachornkul from the Ministry of Social and Human Security Development, the Baan Man Khong project aims to provide Thai people who have lower incomes with a reasonably-priced properly-constructed home.

With regard to Hua Hin, the project will begin in the northern area where the above-mentioned three communities are situated before it is extended later to the community along the Hua Hin railway. Lately, the cabinet has approved a total budget of 27, 706, 393 baht, 9 million baht of which is for 50 families in the Klai Kang Won community, 2 million baht for 13 families in the Tawan Si Thong community and 15 million baht for 80 families in the Faa Si Khram community, said Mr. Narong.

The officials from the Hua Hin Municipality and the State Railway of Thailand will be responsible for considering types of house for each of the families. However, all houses under the project must face the road along the Hua Hin railway in case they are built there and the back of the houses must be 20-meter

away from the railway to enable additional tracks to the South of Thailand .Presently, the State Railway of Thailand is considering a rental rate for all houses to be constructed along the Hua Hin railway. Approval will be finalized in the mid of this year.

The Hua Hin Municipality hopes to find a contractor to realize this project. “This is a pilot project for Hua Hin and its people here,” said Mr. Narong. “When people from the 3 communities get a house, we’ll continue this project for families living in the Hua Hin railway areas like Boh Faai, Rai Nun, Bon Kai and Nong Kae.” Mr. Somboon Det U-Dom, a caretaker of the Thonburi State Railway of Thailand, said that, as he was monitoring the area from Hua Hin’s downtown to Wang Phong, this project will bring a lot of development and improvement to the city. Now, many people from other places are trespassing the state-owned area to live and work, claiming they are poor and homeless.

This causes problems to Hua Hin, particularly environmental problems. So, he would like to ask people who live in the Khao Tao and Boh Faai communities not to seize any more state owned areas and live there. “Those who break the rule will be liable to immediate legal prosecution against trespassing and seizing state owned areas. We’ve been reported about the matter and many cases are now under legal procedure,” concluded Mr. Somboon

property revival expected new land in Thailand P T he Thai beach resort town of Hua Hin is expected to experience a property market revival in the next year, it has been reported.

According to Thai newspaper the Bangkok Post, local broker Engel and Volkers has painted a positive picture for the market thanks to numerous buyers overcoming concerns regarding political instability in the country.

It revealed that although prices will not post big gains this year, an increasing amount of potential investors had been expressing an interest in the area, looking to take

advantage of potential rising prices.

Oliver Lutzi, Hua Hin office manager of the brokerage, claimed that the market currently belonged to the buyer, with prices reasonably stable due to the fact that “economic turbulence has only had a marginal impact on property” in the region.

Furthermore, the newspaper also reported that the property market in the Thai city of Pattaya will also experience growth this year.

It stated that a pick up of around five to ten per cent was likely to occur thanks to rising property costs.

The company’s managing director Patima Jeerapaet said that Bangkok’s strong position is a springboard for the city to benefit from the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015. He said: “The service sector will be a key factor in the changes that will occur in 2015 and the fact that there is a significant amount of office space already and potential for more is a huge advantage for the city.”

The recent research shows that Bangkok has around 7,900,000 sqm compared to Singapore’s just over seven million. The other cities of Manila, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur are further behind but not by much, according to Antony Picon, Associate Director for Research at Colliers. Most of the supply in Bangkok occurred in the 1990′s. “Other cities are catching up but opening up the service sector in Thailand should lead to the next wave of office development,” he added.

Meanwhile, Patima recognised the great potential for Bangkok to be a key service sector provider in the coming decades. He believed that concerted action by both private and public sectors should take place as soon as possible to ensure that 2015 will be a positive for the country.

“If this happens then we will see a renaissance of the office market in the second half of the decade and Bangkok will continue to lead the way”, he concluded.

uxury property developer Raimon Land will invest THB300 million (US$9.9 million) to open a boutique fusion mall adjacent to its The River condominium project along the Chao Phraya by the end of this year.

The Vue, located by The River’s main road entrance on Charoen Nakorn Road, will be comprised of four-stories featuring a selection of restaurants and specialty retail shops catering primarily to residents of The River and to the neighbourhood’s increasingly affluent community.

The Vue project also marks the start of Raimon Land’s new business line. It is expected to generate a profit of THB22 million (US$727,000) per year. Newlyestablished Raimon Land Investments (RLI) will be in charge of the development and

management of new income-generating assets adjacent to Raimon Land’s residential properties.

“This is the first time that we are adding a boutique shopping mall alongside our property development,” said Hubert Viriot, Raimon Land’s chief executive officer.

“We foresee two key benefits to this diversification: first, it enables us to offer additional services to our clients. Secondly, we anticipate that income-generating assets such as Vue could contribute 10-15 per cent of our revenue within the next few years.

ewly formed Thai property firm Country Group Development Plc (CGD) is planning to invest nearly THB14 billion (US$462.9 million) to develop two projects in Bangkok this year.

TAT Steps Up Promotions for Golf in a Kingdom

he Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is to adopt a high-profile presence at the North America Golf Tourism Convention to be organised by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) between May 18 - 21, 2011, Monterey County, California.

Thailand is the only Asian country to be featured as a major sponsor of this event. With more than 100 buyers of golf tourism expected to participate, TAT plans to make full use of this opportunity to disseminate information about the kingdom’s amazing golf facilities, expand its range of contacts and boost networking with golf operators worldwide.

Mrs Juthaporn Rerngronasa, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing (Europe and the Americas), said, “This year, we have set a strategy to expand quality tourists in the American region by stepping up our promotions of the golf tourism market.”

“This is due to the fact that golfers still have high spending power. In times of recurring and

unpredictable crisis every week and a highly competitive market, the TAT needs to continue to attract market segments which still have the desire and the means to travel. Golf tourism is one such segment.”

Set up in 1997 with headquarters in London, IAGTO has a membership of 1,600 companies from 82 countries. Its membership has expanded in recent years to include golf resorts, golf courses, hotels, specialist ground handlers, car rental and transportation companies, airlines, tourist boards, media, and a wide range of business partners who provide services for the golf tourism industry.

Late last year, TAT organised a familiarisation trip for 22 golf tour operators, all members of IAGTO, to survey golf courses in Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin and Chiang Mai. According to IAGTO, its membership includes 370 golf tour operators from 51 countries who only sell golfing holidays. Of these, 144 companies sell golf tours to Thailand.

Mrs Juthaporn said, “The IAGTO has stressed that Thailand has great potential to expand its profile among the rest of the golfing operators who are not yet selling Thailand. We will work with IAGTO more intensively in the future to find ways to cooperate in promoting the golf market.”

In addition to cooperation with IAGTO, TAT also participated in the PGA Merchandise Show in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, last January. The event was attended by nearly 42,000 PGA professionals and industry executives from 88 countries and nearly every

U.S. state.

Two marketing activities targetted at the golf sector are under way in Thailand between 2029 March.

A group of 16 golf industry journalists from the United States, Canada, UK, Italy, Sweden and Denmark have been invited on a fam trip that will take them to some of the popular golf courses of Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin and Chiang Mai. A group of 10 Teaching Professional Golfers from USA are also visiting Thailand to survey the golf courses and supporting facilities and services, and also get ideas for organising golf holiday packages.

Golfing has become a major component of Thailand’s increasingly diverse tourism product.

There are over 200 high standard golf courses nationwide, many of them championship level designed by the world’s top designers; such as, Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones Jr, and many others.

Arnold Palmer talks Tiger Woods’ swing

iger Woods is going through his fourth swing change in his 15 years on the PGA Tour.

Arnold Palmer played a half-century without changing his swing once.

“I really did not make any swing changes in my career,” Palmer said Wednesday. “I started with a pattern when I started playing the tour, and I stuck with it until today. And I will go with it today in the pro-am, and hope to hell I can hit it in the fairway, and hope I can hit it longer than what I’ve been hitting it.”

These are different times, indeed.

Jack Nicklaus used to have his longtime mentor, Jack Grout, take a look at his swing at the start of a season and rarely called him the rest of the year. Palmer’s only coach was his father, Deacon.

“I saw him at least once a year for about 70 years,” Palmer said. “And he never changed anything. He watched me for five minutes and went home. He put my grip on the club and my hands on the golf club when I was 6 years old and he said, ‘Boy, don’t you ever change it.’ Well, I haven’t changed it.”

Palmer said he was surprised that Woods is changing his swing again, although he doesn’t know what he’s trying to do with it. Palmer recalls the first time he played with Woods,

at the Masters during a practice round when Woods was an amateur, and he thought Woods was doing everything just right.

Palmer and Nicklaus figured that Woods might win as many green jackets as both of them combined -- 10. Woods has four.

“So changing? Well, that’s up to Tiger,” Palmer said. “I don’t want to inject anything into something I don’t really know enough about to talk about.”

Oddly enough, Woods mentioned his father as the coach he never had for his putting.

Part of Woods’ struggles lately have come on the greens, which is why he hasn’t seriously contended.

“I went back to all of my old stuff that my dad and I used to work on,” Woods said. “And that’s when I felt that my stroke started becoming more sound, more solid, my speed became better. I don’t know what that dude saw in my game, but he really knew putting and he knew my stroke. My dad really knew my stroke.

“I miss him for a lot more reasons than just the putting, but as far as bouncing ideas off of him and what I was feeling and what he would say, I do miss that, certainly,” he said.

Thailand Too Reliant on Mass Tourism

Thailand needs to move beyond its ‘Amazing’ brand, embrace quality tourism and build iconic mega-attractions instead of more hotel rooms that only end up being discounted, says David Keen, CEO of Keen, a global brand strategy and communications agency with its headquarters in Bangkok

David Keen, CEO of Keen On March 2, the Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva told his country’s travel industry leaders at the ‘Thai Tourism in the Next Decade’ forum that the country needs to focus more on quality tourism.

To me that means we need to attract higher yield, higher disposable income, higher spending leisure and business visitors.

Prime Minister Abhisit is to be saluted for his opinion. Thailand needs to move away from its dependence on increasingly irrelevant, low yield mass tourism.

Official government statistics show that international arrivals in 2011 will reach about 16.6 million, an increase of 4.4%. To put that in context, Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism

and Sport reports that the country recorded annual tourism growth of 7.5% between 2005 and 2010, with visitor arrivals growing from 11.5 million in 2005 to around 15.8 million last year.

However, macro statistics like this are increasingly misleading. Look closer and you’ll discover that long-haul, long stay, higher spending visitors are being replaced by shorter stay mid-market visitors who spend less per capita per visit.

A new and unsustainable trend has emerged.

The country has to run faster to stay still.

Because more tourists stay shorter and spend less, Thailand needs to maintain double digit growth in arrivals just to match the preceding year’s tourism earnings.

More hotel beds and airplane seats creates over capacity. Empty hotel rooms and low load factors are causing price dumping and desperate short-term marketing pitches to mass market suppliers.

I am increasingly concerned. The over supply of rooms and seats are among key factors pushing Thailand’s brand reputation into a downward spiral. Huge volume, costconscious tourists bring the country’s brand down, which in turn attracts lower yield tourists.

Political instability, long queues at Suvarnabhumi airport, over-crowding and environmental degradation are also damaging the brand. Such all-too-visible problems are ‘amazing’ in the eyes of tourists who are used to high quality travel experiences in Europe, Japan, Australia and the United States. Thailand’s brand is becoming more ‘amazing’ for all the wrong reasons.

Because of a toxic tom yam mix of political, capacity and branding issues, Thailand is witnessing the flight of quality to alternative destinations such as Malaysia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

Old lessons have still not been learned. More hotels are being built. In February the Thai Hotel Association reported that 2,282 new

hotel rooms would be added in Bangkok this year. No wonder a similar standard property in Singapore or Hong Kong charges US$350 a night compared to US$150 in Bangkok.

The Phuket Insider this week reported an increase of 27% in arrivals year on year to Phuket in the first two months of this year.

These numbers give serious pause to international luxury hotel brands. Luxury accommodation brands will only continue to invest in your country if they believe they can attract high yield returns.

If you’re going to build, stop building so many hotels and start building iconic mega projects.

Singapore bravely built the Marina Bay Sands, Universal Studios and added F1 night races. Hong Kong opened Disneyland and Ngong Ping 360. Malaysia has announced Legoland. Thailand has very little ‘new’ to offer except more amazing sales and discount prices. It’s not a sustainable proposition.

Bangkok has added a skytrain, an underground train network and a new airport, all in the last 11 years. The country can deliver on ambitious goals when it acts as one.

My hope is that Thailand will unite to build brand equity. We should move on from the worn out ‘Amazing Thailand’ mantra to a new era based on higher yield, higher value leisure and business visitors.

ighlighting the importance of tourism to the Thai economy, Thailand Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has said that while the government needs to invest heavily in infrastructure, such investment needed to pay attention to natural resource conservation.

According to Mr. Abhisit 15.8 million foreign visitors arrived in Thailand last year generating Bt585 billion (about $US19.343 billion) in revenue, representing 7 per cent of the gross domestic product.

If the country is able to maintain a 7.5 per cent annual growth in visitor arrivals and 11 per cent growth in income, Mr. Abhisit said the income from foreign tourism would double over the next decade.

Thailand’s largest infrastructure investment in the last 10 years has been Bangkok International Airport, which opened in 2006, with the focus in the next few years on 200km (about 125 mile) of mass-transit systems in greater Bangkok and on a Thai-Chinese joint venture to build a rail network linking Nong Khai, Bangkok and Padang Besar, expected to be completed in four years.

Mr. Abhisit said efforts were needed by both the public and private sector to solve existing problems, such as deterioration of tourism spots, with the cabinet already approving a national tourism development plan for 2012 to 2016 with special emphasis on infrastructure development and rehabilitating damaged tourism destinations.

The comments by Mr. Abhisit were echoed by Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) governor Surapol Svetaseni, who said environmental protection was a key concern for local and international tourists, and increasingly influenced their holiday destination decisions.

Highlighting a major problem visitors encounter throughout Thailand, Mr. Surapol said that “when Asean becomes a single market under the Asean Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 Thailand will have a great opportunity to attract more foreign visitors, however, communication skills of Thai people must be improved”, he said.

The problem we’ll discuss below is typical of these problems in that you may be living happily in a home that is long-leased, and not even know the problem exists. Also, it’s easy to fix, but if you don’t, your loved ones could lose the home if you die.

Thai law provides that if a tenant leasing real property dies, the lease is terminated and the property reverts to the landlord.

Thus if you’re the sole tenant on a 30-year lease that doesn’t provide otherwise, the home will go back to the landlord if you die, even if, for example, less than a year has gone by since you signed the lease.

This means your heirs wouldn’t get the remainder of the lease on the place, your landlord would.

Black Mountain Lunch Appointment I

dragged my Golf bag from my Bugatti and entrusted the valuable Tiger Wood clubs to the Caddy.

With my handicap set at par, it was the match of the day.

As I approached the restaurant I expected Tiger Woods and Ernie Els to greet me at the set table. A stingy poke reminder of Chef Peter from Bella Mia who accompanied me woke me up and made me realize, I was only dreaming. I looked into the friendly faces of Executive Chef Martin Karlsson and ever smiling staff. “Welcome to the Black Mountain Golf Club Restaurant”.

A bit out of town , this Golf Paradise is quickly developing into a full grown Country Club with facilities like a top notch, 18 hole international golf course, Tennis courts, beach sand Volley Ball Court, Water world with water skiing and all sorts of other water related sports and amusements. Kids Play ground and

hopefully a respectfully sized swimming pool.

This is not a dream. It would be a great country club to spend your Sundays or even weekend if cabins available to stay over.

A table was set for our lunch appointment with Chef Martin. Before disappearing into the kitchen, he announced a light but popular lunch which he would prepare by himself. We were invited to join him in the kitchen, but a short visit to same made me decide to wait at the table for the first course.

As a starter, an interesting toast called “ Skagen “, shrimps in dill mayonnaise on toasted white bread had a very fresh and flowery taste caused by the dill. It was presented on a rectangular plate and usually accompanied by a sparkling wine or a blanc de blanc, served well chilled.

The Main course was a lightly grilled blue fin tuna exposing the hardly grilled inside with a mouth watering roasted garlic crème and a French potato salad with pesto. The combination of this course has a lot to add to your imagination as it is a combination of brilliantly composed crèmes and pesto without any one of the ingredients ruling over the other. A perfect balance of spices and herbs. A course, which among the greedy, could be served twice. This dish would be well sided with a lighter aromatic Australian white wine from the McLaren vale. Needless to mention that there is wide selection of international wines of your choice.

I don’t believe that Black Mountain want to stamp themselves off as a fine dining restaurant but rather a Golf Club Restaurant with most of the restaurant guests staying for lunch. Now this will definitely change once the water world is operative and other facilities are in place. However the food is delicious, well selected balancing East and West. As many Golf players come from Japan, Korea and Singapore, Asian dishes are as popular as western dishes. The d´Arenberg Wine Dinner at the Hyatt Regency

´Arenberg is one of the most significant wineries in the McLaren Vale in Australia.

Presenting the wines was Nick James Martin, winemaker & brand ambassador, flown in from down under Australia.

Some history on d´Arenberg Winery: In 1912 , Josef Osborn, director of Thomas Hardy and Sons purchased the Milton Vineyards north of the townships of Gloucester and Bellevue , near Adelaide , Australia , now known as McLaren Vale.

At the splendid wine dinner, once more and as expected superbly organised and brilliantly set on the first floor of the McFarlane house came alive , both guests and presentation got acquainted with each other before pulling the first cork of the d´Arenberg wines.

Central Food Retail was represented by the charming general manager of their wine & spirits department, Khun Rossukol Rergsomran. Our venue was the historical McFarland House on the beach front where tables were delicately arranged in a classy setting. Excellent work of the F&B Staff.

The wine dinner was prepared by highly talented Executive Chef Mitele and his staff and presented in the usual classy

manner. Chef Mitele explained the courses as they came along.

As a starter , Asparagus with a Salmon Caviar cream sauce and a small lobster Gazpacho was served accompanied by a d´ Arenberg Sauvignon Blanc , The Broken fishplate 2009 , a fresh , flowery , full aroma young white wine, gently chilled , excellent matching the seafood delicacy.

A second starter, Smoked Salmon Crepes in white wine velloute (A velouté sauce, along with Allemande, Béchamel, and Espagnole, is one of the sauces of French cuisine that were designated the four “mother sauces”

By now there was a story about Chef Mitele chasing a herd of sheep along the beach to catch a fresh lamb. But as it was his birthday, GM Sammy congratulated him, not only for his birthday but for

the excellent food created with passion and dedication.

A Shiraz – Viogener called the Laughing Magpie 2008, a not so daily choice but nicely matching with the lamb contemplated most of the amateur connaiseurs. We all turn into a bit of an expert as we twist, shake and smell our glas of wine letting every one know that we know what we are doing and by doing so, show our expertise.

As if we did not have enough, but than what is a five course meal without cheese, Mitele served a Double baked Brie, Black Truffle Cheeese Soufflé, Peach & Nut flavoured Cheese with Spring Onion Cheese Mouse in a Parmesan Cheese with Multigrain Chips acting as little gourmet spoons. A d´Arenberg Sticks and stones 2005 with a deep red brilliance of the Shiraz grape accompanied by berries , strawberry , violets and a mix of herbaceous, in plain English : a great wine , aromatic, dry, vintage. My favourite!

A caramelized Chocolate and Coconut Brittle Tart with Mocca and Vanilla sweetened off the end of our dinner with a sweet but noble Riesling 2006.

A splendid way to end the week in a secluded compound providing a delightful evening of wine tasting and exceptional gourmet dinner. Thanks to Chef Mitele and his entire staff and Nick James Martin of d´Arenberg.

Which Form of Massage Therapy is Right for You? T

herapeutic massage therapy is the handson practice of manipulating the muscles and other tissues in the body to reduce stress, relieve pain and promote relaxation and healing. Both techniques release tension from the body, improve circulation and support the body in eliminating toxins and waste products that collect in the tissues and commonly fall under the categories of Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, sports massage and hot stone massage.

Massage techniques that developed in the East-China, Japan and Thailand, for exampleprovide many of the same benefits, but also focus on the life force energy believed to flow through the body. The philosophy behind these forms of massage therapy is that freeflowing energy results in good health and proper function of all the body’s systems. If the energy is blocked or otherwise restricted, the resulting imbalance in energy flow throughout the body may lead to illness or disease.

Experiences with massage are as individual as the people who have massage therapy treatments. Each therapist, no matter which form they’re schooled in, will also have their own unique approach to the work. Swedish Massage Swedish massage uses oil or lotion to reduce

Not all Swedish massage therapists are trained in pre-natal massage, so be sure to seek a therapist who is specially certified or licensed in this form of massage therapy.

Deep Tissue Massage With this form of massage, long strokes and frictions techniques that spread muscle fibers wide apart are used to access the deeper tissues in the body and rub them against both overlying and further underlying tissues. Deep tissue massage can be fairly intense and is often used to treat muscles that are extremely tight due to overuse or recovery from injury.

By restoring a greater range of mobility to the muscles, deep tissue massage may result in improved posture by teaching back muscles not to contract. It’s not uncommon to feel sore for a day or two after deep tissue massage.

Sports massage is a form of deep tissue massage that concentrates touch only on the part of the body that needs repair or strengthening. In that way, it’s also an effective form of preventative therapy. The targeted tissues are worked deeply into the muscle grain and this friction between tissues helps break up scar tissue and stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities.

Hot Stone Massage A gentle, relaxing form of massage, hot stone massage incorporates the use of heated stones. These stones which are comfortably warm to the touch, but not hot enough to burn are positioned on areas of the body where treatment is needed or pressure points where the practitioner may perceive a block or restriction of energy in your body. The massage therapist will use the stones in place of their hands to apply pressure to or rub your muscles. People who receive hot stone massage report feeling of deep relaxation.

Reflexology Although it’s not truly a form of massage therapy, you might see reflexology offers on the massage services menus of spas and salons. Reflexology is performed only the hands and feet and draws on the principles of acupressure. In reflexology, it’s believed

Shiatsu Massage Shiatsu literally translates to finger pressure and incorporates various principles from Traditional Chinese Medicine although as it continued to develop in Japan it became more focused on the physical body. Shiatsu is performed while the recipient is fully clothed, on a mat placed on the floor.

By applying pressure to specific points on the physical body that correspond to Eastern philosophies about how life force energy moves through the body, the primary goal is to restore energetic balance to the body. Shiatsu is also said to tap into the emotions and an emotional response like laughing or crying isn’t an uncommon effect of the session.

Instead of deep kneading and friction techniques, shiatsu massage uses applied pressure from the fingers, knuckles, elbows, knees and feet along with gentle stretching to encourage better energy flow.

Thai Massage Thai massage is similar to shiatsu in that recipients remain fully clothed and the session is conducted on a floor mat. It also incorporates some of the energetic principles from Traditional Chinese Medicine, so it too, operates on the principle that obstructed energy and energetic imbalance leads to discomfort and illness.

Thai massage does not however, subscribe to the same system of energy lines that run throughout the body. Rather, thai massage has defined its own map of energy lines and uses touch techniques that draw from acupressure, reflexology and hatha yoga to restore energy flow throughout the body.

Cha-Am getting ready for Songkran

T

he Cha-Am Municipality is now preparing for the biggest Songkran festival ever in the city. The traditional Thai new year celebration, which consists of Buddhist ceremonies and festive activities, will begin throughout Cha-Am on 13 April from 7.30 am. to midnight.

The preparatory meeting for the event took place on 10 March 2011 at 10 am. at a meeting room of the ChaAm Municipality. Presided over by the Mayor of ChaAm Mr. Nukul Pornsomboonsiri, it was participated by representatives from local governmental sectors, schools, hotels and community leaders of Cha-Am. The meeting has resolved to divide the Cha-Am Songkran festival into 2 parts: the morning and the evening sessions.

he Rai Som Sub-District Administration Office, in collaboration with the Petchaburi Rajabhat University, the Royal Diamond Hotel Petchaburi and local artists of the province, will organize the 2nd Khob Laan Art Marche 2011 between 14 and 18 April in front of the Royal Diamond Hotel Petchaburi by the Petchakasem Road, said the Chief of the Rai Som Sub-District Administration Office Mr. Sirilert Sorachat.

Supported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the Khob Laan Art Marche highlights integrated lifestyle of Petchaburi people with the contemporary art. The words, ‘Khob Laan’, refer to the cow racing – a traditional event well-known among the Petchaburi local. Those who gather around the cow racing ring are thus called Khob Laan kins. Activities at the Khob Laan Art Marche include drawing exhibits, photo displays, traditional and cultural Thai performances and selling of local hand-made products and Thai cuisine, namely Petchaburi-style rice in jasmine syrup, Thai noodles with fishcake, red-stew noodles and ‘Lod Chong’ or a Thai sweets with palm sugar syrup. Thailand welcomes Buengkan as

77th Province

T

hailand welcomes Buengkan as its 77th province, which is being carved out of the country’s northeastern Nong Khai province. The new Buengkan province with a total area of 4,305 square kilometers and a total population of some 390,000, comprises of seven districts, including Seka, So Pisai, Bung Kla, Bueng Khong Long, Pak Kad, Porn Charoen and Sri Wilai.

The locals proposed that Buengkan to become a new Thai province in 1994, but the proposal was approved by the Thai government 17 years later.

Thailand’s newest province is sub-divided into 7 districts and 3 MPs will represents its about 400,000 people. Moew than 98 percent of locals wanted the district upgraded to a province, according to a Ministry of Interior survey.

Bordering Laos and four other Thai provinces, Buengkan has many temples such as Wat Phu Tokwith its woodedn stairs and ladders up seven layers and natural wonders including Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary, a forested hill area near the Maekhong River with elephants, tigers, and other wildlife. The province also has waterfalls, caves and Nog Gud Thing which is a large swamp with rich biodiversity including 20 fish species found nowhere else in the world.

At noon, there will be a beautiful procession and a big parade of Songkran ladies from the Long Beach Cha-Am. Once they reach the Cha-Am Local Culture Center on the Ruam Chit Road, there will be the opening of local game competitions and traditional Thai music performances. The morning activities will finish at 4.30 p.m.

Coinciding with the morning session, is the much favored water splashing – the highlight of Songkran that visitors can not miss.

Starting from 7.30 p.m. to 12 a.m. at the Cha-Am Municipality, the evening session boasts colorful fireworks and concerts of famous Thai artists, namely Earn the Star and Ekarat Suvanabhumi, and a comedy show from Thong Pia Super Joke. ChaAm organizes Songkran celebration every year to give its local people and visitors joy and happiness.

The main events of this year aim to foster local Thai intellect, especially the traditional performing art of Petchaburi, apart from promoting tourism in the city.

Everyone is welcome to enjoy this big festival that marks the beginning of the new year according to traditional Thai belief, stated the Cha-Am Mayor.

This year, the event will have a lot of big activities including the colorful lighting of hand-made paper lamps at all palaces and building on Khao Wang, beautiful fireworks at night, walking trail to admire frangipani planted around Khao Wang, and an exhibit about His Majesty’s self-sufficiency principles. Thai culture enthusiasts will find the chanting of 13 reincarnations of the Lord Buddha, a display of Petchaburi handicrafts, cultural performances from many artists of the Fine Art Department and selling of local and traditional Thai foods and sweets very intriguing. All those activities will be held on top of Khao Wang, said Mr. Chai.

At the foot of Khao Wang, there will be a beauty pageant of Petchaburi ladies, a golf tournament, selling of the One-TambonOne-Product (OTOP) and a fair of the Petchaburi Red Cross Group, added the Petchaburi Governor.

นายชายเปิดเผยว่า งานพระนครคีรฯี เป็นงานประเพณีของจังหวัด เพชรบุรี ทีจ่ ดั ติดต่อกันมาเป็นประจ�ำทุกปี ซึง่ ปีนจี้ งั หวัดเพชรบุรไี ด้รว่ มกับกรมศิลปากร องค์การบริหารส่วนจังหวัด(อบจ.)เพชรบุรี เทศบาลเมืองเพชรบุรี และหน่วยงานภาครัฐ และเอกชน โดยการสนับสนุนจากท่องเทีย่ วแห่งประเทศไทย(ททท.) ส�ำนักงานเพชรบุรี ก�ำหนดจัดงานพระนครคีรฯี ขึน้ เพือ่ เทิดพระเกียรติบรู พมหากษัตริยาธิราช รัชกาลที่ 4 รัชกาลที่ 5 รัชกาลที่ 6 และเฉลิมพระชนมายุครบ 84 พรรษา ของพระบาทสมเด็จ พระเจ้าอยูห่ วั อีกทัง้ เป็นการฟืน้ ฟูธำ� รงไว้ซงึ่ ศิลปวัฒนธรรมประเพณีทดี่ งี ามของท้องถิน่ ตลอดจนส่งเสริมการท่องเทีย่ วของจังหวัดให้เป็นทีแ่ พร่หลาย นายชายกล่าวต่อไปว่า งานพระนครคีรฯี ในปีนจี้ ดั ให้มกี จิ กรรมอย่างยิง่ ใหญ่ โดย ในส่วนบนเขามีการประดับตกแต่งหมูพ่ ระทีน่ งั่ ด้วยแสงไฟฟ้า โคมไฟ โคมกระดาษหลาก หลายสีสนั สวยงามตระการตา การจุดพลุเทิดพระเกียรติทกุ ค�ำ่ คืน การจัดนิทรรศการ เฉลิมพระเกียรติปรัชญาเศรษฐกิจพอเพียง ชมลีลาวดีลา้ นดอกบานสะพรัง่ ทัว่ เขาวัง การ เทศน์มหาชาติ การสาธิตงานสกุลช่างเมืองเพชร การแสดงศิลปวัฒนธรรม การแสดงจาก กรมศิลปากร การประกวดโคมไฟ การสาธิตและจ�ำหน่ายอาหาร ขนมพืน้ บ้าน การละเล่น พืน้ บ้านวิถชี วี ติ ไทยการประการจ�ำลองภาพแหล่งท่องเทีย่ วผาน�้ำหยดและกินรีสตั ว์ใน วรรณคดีไทยให้นกั ท่องเทีย่ วได้บนั ทึกภาพเป็นทีร่ ะลึก
