EDITORIAL FOREWORD

riving to Bangkok is a surprise every time again. It may go swift or you may be stuck long before the toll over the bridge. Taking the new airport highway which is not indicated as airport signs direct you straight through to the Rama bridge would be an alternative. Going through Bang Na is way around and not any faster. If you want to go to IKEA and the new Mall, well yes than it is ok. Once you enter BKK, you are stuck anyway. I usually park the car somewhere near a BTS and take the Sky train from there. Don’t think logical if you drive through BKK cause there is no logic behind the traffic regulations, traffic light times, blocked U turns etc. The Sky Train will take you anywhere and if not, the Subway will. Authorities plan and plan and plan and we wait and wait and wait. So our friend Obama has made it again, small margin but then as in tennis, no one asks how you won as long as you won. Mitt goes back to the Mormons and may hope for a second shot at it in 4 years. As a good friend of mine said ; USA will eventually pull out of the hole whereas Europe may find it more difficult. The US has a two party system who could eventually agree on measures to fire up the economy, get rid of deficit by printing some more money and follow that American Dream or Dilema whatever you interpretation. Europe is a multi state, culture, mentality and language community, which may eventually get into social trouble as rich state´s taxpayers are being ransacked. Retirees having to put up with less so other Mediterranean billionaires can keep up their yachts and transfer monies into offshore accounts whilst European state heads still debate whether they should bail out, help, pay these poor countries that are so helpless. Hov dumb do politicians think we are? We are pretty Dum to accept all this. Now more events coming to Hua Hin. Soon we will really be on the map. Wish there was more culture. Hyatt and Dusit do do classical concerts and we need more, Ballet, Elton John, Vernisages, Pop concerts, International Jazz,

Tennis Tournaments, you name it. The Banyan will bring International Jazz to Hua Hin with Daniel Humair and Ensemble. Daniel is one of the world´s best drummers. Must see, go …Lucky draw, 1 year free membership at the Banyan Golf Club for all you Tigers… Got a call from Jack Mairoo, gentleman at large. He dwelled in Myanmar studying what he called Homo Sapiens, I call it Les Femmes. He will be back and report on his life again soon. Had a presentation about Insecticide and Chemical “Safe” Vegetables. Very impressive and yes let´s go for it. I was told even watermelons get food colour injections to look redder inside… chemicals ? Well if tourist smear themselves with tanning lotion, Thai people indulge in whitening creams, why can´t melons fancy reddeners. We all want to look as good as possible. Thai doctors love antibiotics. Any doctor´s visit may see you loaded with some kind of ant-biotic for a cold, a sore throat, clogged sinus or even a scratch. Do we all realize that in the end they become less and less effective as our bodies and bacteria get used to them. Antibiotics are useless when combatting a virus and are pure ant bacterial. Try alternative medicine. It takes a bit longer but it is much healthier and more harmless to the body. Last but not least. Will Thailand adapt to the ASEAN visa changes. In this hostile Visa environment where we have to be grateful being granted a Visa to stay here although we contribute importantly towards the BNP, I wonder why temporary Immi laws can not be adjusted to residents that buy homes, cars, motorbikes, employ Thai nationals and contribute towards making Thailand a top tourist and investment destination. Pitifull. Anywhere else we could go ? According to a news report, a certain private Catholic school was recently faced with a unique problem. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine provided it was of a natural or neutral skin tone, but after they put

on their lipstick, they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints. Every night the maintenance man would remove them; and the next day the girls would put them back. Finally, the principal, Sister Mary, decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian, who had to clean the mirrors every night (you can just imagine the yawns from the little princesses). To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, Sister Mary asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror. There are teachers...... he Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul has lately informed that the celebration for the New Year in Hua Hin would take place at 19-Rai Quuen Sirikit Memorial Park between 26 December 2012 and 3 January 2013. According to the Mayor of Hua Hin, the 1st of January is internationally known as the New Year. Formerly, the New Year in Thailand was in April during the Songkran Day. Later, the Thai government changed the date to 1 January to suit international tradition while maintaining Songkran as the traditional Thai New Year. Although Thai people celebrate the New Year the same as people around the world do, they also

have some unique traditional activities for this festive event, namely offering alms to Buddhist monks, cleaning their house and sending New Year cards to friends and relatives. To bid farewell to 2012, the New Year celebration in Hua Hin highlights a singing contest, selling of good and cheap products and many stage performances, such as a famous Thai drama on stage or ‘Likeh’ by Watthana Anan Group, concerts of Kung Suthirat, Sao Mad Megadance, Blueberry, Khlerm, Paowalee, Khanom Jin, Ice Saranyu, C Manthanawee and other famous Thai stars. In the evening of 31 December 2012, there will be a big countdown to 2013 with a Buddhist ceremony of holy water springing and praying by Buddhist monks. On 1 January 2013, a Buddhist ceremony of giving alms to Buddhist monks will be held to welcome the New Year. To celebrate its 3rd anniversary, Plearn Wan will undergo some renovation and remodification with additional zone, “Trok Wan Suen (literally, “Yesteryear Lane”)”. In Thai, “Trok” means a small street or lane of communities or villages where, in the past, Thai teenagers hung out together, had some small talks and even did activities. At Trok Wan Suen of Plearn Wan, visitors will walk down the memory lane when they pass a lot of old styled shops and restaurants that bring back the atmosphere of Hua Hin in 1954, a year well known among Thai people as the period dominated by ruffians, said the Managing Director of Plearn Wan Ms. Pattra Sahawat. Established in December, 2010, Plearn Wan will celebrate its 3rd anniversary on 15 December this year. To thank its valued customers, the 3rd anniversary celebration will consist of a concert by Jetrin ‘J’ Wattanasin, a famous Thai pop singer and rapper. Throughout the past three years, over 3 million visitors haven been to Plearn Wan. A living museum of Hua Hin,

it features vintage atmosphere of Thailand and classic local culture and tradition of Hua Hin. Besides many interesting shops, coffee houses with vintage style and tasty food, Plearn Wan boasts Thai cultural performances, such as Thai boxing, Thai stage drama or ‘Likeh’, Thai dancing and outdoor old Thai movies. These are the major selling points of Plearn Wan. Currently, Plearn Wan has its own accommodation, “Piman Pa Plearn”, of which the interior is decorated with vintage and classic items. Visitors can go there and celebrate the 3rd anniversary of Plearn Wan with the new Trok Wan Suen from 15 December onwards.

TAT’s Advertising Campaign Paying Big Dividends in Hua Hin

ourism Authority of Thailand’s advertising campaign promoting Hua Hin is paying big dividends. Tourist arrivals in Hua Hin were up over 49 percent from 2010 to 2011 with over 1.6 million tourists visiting our royal resort city and 2012 will undoubtedly break new records. With double page adverts placed in International magazines such as the Economist, Hua Hin is being portrayed as Thailand’s Riviera where you can rub shoulders with celebrities while taking in its sophisticated charm. Along with the tourists are large numbers of property buyers looking for a holiday or retirement home. Both Thai and foreign developers have

seen the trend and have responded to the opportunity. Large multi billion baht projects, unheard of a few years ago, are now the norm. North of Hua Hin’s airport property developer Baan Rajprasong Co. is building The Energy Hua Hin an enormous 6,000 unit condominium development worth a total of THB20 billion (US$650 million). Nearby is Baan Thew Talay, a joint venture between property developer Charn Issara and the Sahapat Group, a THB2 billion (US$65 million) condominium project situated on 13 rai of land with 57 meters of beachfront. The Sahapat group owns an additional 80 rai next door with plans under discussion to build another condominium and hotel project with a THB10 billion (US$325.3 million) price tag. SC Asset has come to town building a THB2 billion condominium project with a villa and townhome project planned next. Sansiri, a long time player in the Hua Hin property game can’t build fast enough with several of their developments selling out in just two days. The list of new projects seems endless. And then there are the shopping malls. The Mall Group, developers and owners of Siam Paragon and The Emporium in Bangkok have announced in a joint venture with the Proud Group a THB5 billion (US$162.6 million) shopping mall across the street from the InterContinental, Hua Hin’s latest 5 star hotel. To the north is Venezia, THB1.2 billion Venice themed shopping lifestyle mall under construction which will include condominiums and serviced apartments. So why Hua Hin? recently hosted a group of Chinese clients who had been touring Thailand for the last month deciding where to invest. They chose Hua Hin to build their housing development because of its easy going beach lifestyle, relatively low land costs, ready infrastructure, strong services and facilities and its close proximity to Bangkok. Their particular target market is buyers from Shanghai where residents can

leave their home in the morning and be in their holiday home in Hua Hin by the afternoon. It is the same travel distance as Hong Kong whose residents have already invested heavily in Hua Hin. Another driving force behind Hua Hin’s boom is the now retiring baby boomer generation. With the U.S. and Europe’s printing presses working overtime printing money to try to buy us out of this financial crisis taxes will have to be raised and services will have to be cut. More and more retiree’s will and are looking for alternate places to retire. A recent article in the US News and World Report magazine was entitled “The Ideal Retirement Haven You’ve Never Heard Of” and opens by saying “Few places in the world meet all the criteria of an ideal retirement haven. Here’s one place that does that most of the world has never heard of: Hua Hin, Thailand. Dollar for dollar, you likely could enjoy a much higher standard of living in Hua Hin than back home, no matter where back home happens to be”. It goes on to say; “Perhaps the best part about retirement in Hua Hin is that you are not obliged to give up comforts and conveniences from back home. You’ll be able to live better and enhance your quality of life, because the infrastructure and services to do so are both available and affordable.” Hua Hin’s future is looking bright. A new high speed train from Bangkok to Hua Hin is in the works and Hua Hin’s airport is getting ready to start receiving international travelers with regional airline BerJaya Air flying from Kuala Lumpur to Hua Hin three times per week.

“There´s a Place in the Sun” Hua Hin, Thailand

T

hailand has been listed as the best place for retirement by the 2011 HSBC Expat Explorer survey. 82% of those surveyed said that it was a great place for retirement compared with 78% of those who had relocated to France and 62% of those who had made the move to Spain. Thailand rated highly with expats for the ease with which they were able to integrate into the community, establish a local support network and maintain a positive life/work balance. And buying a property in Thailand could also be a positive move for your career with 78% of those who had relocated to the country reporting an increase in salary, compared to a global average of 71%. The poll discovered that quality of life is the most important consideration for those retiring abroad, with 83% citing this as the main reason when deciding on location. 62% of expats surveyed listed the weather as their main reason for moving, while 27% were relocating because of friends and family who had already made the leap. The survey also found that almost half, 47%, of expats aged over 55 are planning to retire in the country that they currently live in and only one fifth, 19%, plan to return to their home country. It may not be the most traditional choice for a second home, but overseas investors looking for something a little different are being encouraged to invest in Thailand. Property in the country’s oldest resort of Hua Hin, with its beautiful beaches and gentle pace of life, could be an ideal investment for an expat looking further afield than the Costas. Situated 145km South of Bangkok, the area has a reputation for being one of the safest and cleanest in the country and is already attracting a growing expat community. And with over 500 properties available, from budget condos to luxury villas, the most real estate agents are ideally placed to give you all the advice you need for Thailand relocation. As well as selling and renting property in the area, the company will also recommend legal services and property caretaking firms to make sure your home is kept secure while you’re back in England. Two bed townhouses within a resort featuring a shared pool and balconies can be purchased from around £50,000 while one-bed beachfront condos can be picked up for around £50,000-60,000. Or for the more adventurous investor, land can be purchased for prices in the hundreds.

Thailand is fast emerging as one of the most preferred destinations for Westerners looking for a new life abroad according to HSBC’s 2010 Expat Explore Survey. The survey by HSBC, analyzing views of more than 3000 expats, in over 100 countries placed Thailand at the top of its list of countries to relocate to, beating other popular destinations including Australia, Canada and Spain. The report rated expats’ experiences of starting their new lives in their chosen host country, and their general quality of life in comparison to where they used to live, including such factors as: accommodation, cuisine, entertainment, healthcare, work-life balance, social life, opportunities for sports and travel as well as the relative ease in which they were able to organize life’s essentials such as schools for their children and set up finances in their new country of residence. In other recent surveys, Thailand was also listed number one. At the 2010 Travel and Leisure Magazine World’s Best Awards, Bangkok was voted the number one city in the world and Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second city came in at second place. It’s easy to see why an increasing number of foreigners are calling Thailand home, drawn to the country’s exotic charm, year-round climate, low cost of living and quality of life.” Courtesy of APITS - London

Economic concerns not slowing investment in Asia Pacific

Fitzroy Place Popular for Thai Buyers

A

I

nvestors’ continued caution over the slowing economy and Eurozone debt crisis has not slowed buying momentum in key real estate investment markets in Asia Pacific, according to a CBRE press release. Investment turnover of US$19 billion was 21 percent above the three-year quarterly average, with q-to-q transaction volume declining just at 4 percent. The sub-US$250 million market segment drove activity this quarter, posting a 17 percent increase in activity q-to-q. “Investors remain optimistic regarding the medium to long-term outlook for the region, despite the ongoing worries over external factors including the Eurozone debt crisis and weak United States economy,” Nick Axford, executive director and head of CBRE Research, Asia Pacific commented.

“There is increased interest from investors outside the Asia Pacific region and a structural increase in demand from expansion of Asian institutions.” Investment flows remained high in several major markets including Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan and Australia. Hong Kong saw an increase in deals involving office properties, and the bulk of office deals in this market were transactions for stratatitle floors in decentralized locations that continue to record rental growth, the press release noted. Over the quarter, domestic buyers continued to dominate investment activity, accounting for 80% of transaction volume. Australia, China and Japan remained the preferred destinations for foreign investors, while Singapore recorded its highest quarterly volume of net disposals by foreign investors since 2005

multi-award-winning developer based in London, Exemplar, exhibited their London W 1 project, Fitzroy Place, at a two-day exhibition at the St. Regis Bangkok hotel. This is the first time that a major exhibition has been held of truly central London property, and as the attached aerial photographs shows, Fitzroy Place could not be more central to the heart of London. The developer and their agents, CBRE Thailand and Savills, were delighted with the results. From the exhibition and with a few keen buyers placing deposits before the exhibition doors even opened, a total of over GBP 25 million worth of UK property (approximately over THB 1.25 billion) has been sold. The agents noted one of the main reasons for the strong response was the strong level of confidence in the London property market, representing one of the safest and most secure investment locations in the world. Buyers can readily appreciate the prospects of steady capital appreciation. More specifically, a number of buyers were seeking apartments with an eye to overseas education and the need to find safe and secure home for their children and a base for family visits. Fitzroy Place is now releasing the current phase, with prices range from GBP 800,000 to GBP 12.5 million for studio, 1 to 3 bedrooms and penthouses. One of the main attractions is the very central location of the property in a new and comprehensive re-development of an entire central London block.

The well-known restaurant district of Charlotte Street and Oxford Circus is only a short walk away. Fitzroy Place now moves onto Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Hong Kong and it is significant that they chose Bangkok as the first stop for their Asian roadshow. “Thai buyers are definitely interested in the London market,” said Ms. Aliwassa Pathnadabutr, Managing Director of CBRE Thailand. There is a broad awareness of the main features of Central London but buyers at present are still educating themselves on specifics such as locations, pricing and the general underlying supply and demand trends of the market. Mr. Robert Collins, Chief Executive Officer of Savills Thailand, joint agents for the project and a noted London property specialist locally said “Fitzroy Place is considered to be the most successful launch of London residential property to the Thai market.” Mr. Richard Shaw, Residential Director of Exemplar said “We were impressed with the questions and interest in London and the quality of Thai buyers. Previously, we have focused our attention primarily in Hong Kong and Singapore where people have been buying London property for decades. However, this exhibition and trip have been eye-opening for us in terms of the sophistication of Thai residential market and Thai buyers. We look forward to forming a long and positive association with both the existing buyers and the Thai property market.”

oble Development announced plans to launch three new high-end condominium projects in Bangkok’s Central Business District with a total value of over THB7 billion (US$228 million) during the first half of 2013. Noble also announced its Ploenchit project has made positive strides with promising sales and is scheduled for completion in four years. “Next year, Noble Development will continue to build our business based on our expertise in developing high-quality condominiums with inspiring design in Bangkok’s CBD,” Kitti Thanakitamnuay, chairman and chief executive officer, Noble Development Public Company Ltd., said. “Our main focuses in 2013 will be on two areas. Firstly, we will accelerate construction and sales for Noble Ploenchit luxury condominium project. Secondly, we will launch at least three new projects in the best locations in Bangkok CBD close to the BTS line. The new projects are located in Ratchadapisek, Thong Lor and Sukhumvit areas and will strive to accommodate different financial needs of

customers, a Noble Development press release said.“We will continue to grow our business with focus on developing high-end residential projects, both in Luxury High End and Affordable High End segments,” Thanakitamnuay said. “Although it is quite difficult to find good locations in Bangkok, that’s not a problem to us. We will continue to be committed to offering only the best to our customers.” Noble’s expansion in 2013 is based in part to the company’s successful 2012 in which they reached THB3 billion (US$98 million) in sales.According to Thanakitamnuay, the Thai property market continues to have a strong outlook, especially when considering investment potential.“The AEC integration in 2015 will also encourage free flow of investment and money. That means greater opportunities for business operators to enter into high potential cities, especially those which are gateway to our neighboring countries, and in neighboring countries,” Thanakitamnuay said. “Noble sees this potential and is studying possibility for this plan.”

SET-listed property developer Sansiri Plc has revised up its presales target this year to 36 billion baht from 33 billion targeted earlier after better-than-expected first-half presales of 20 billion baht, said CEO Apichart Chutrakul. The good performance has prompted it to set 2013 presales target at 40 billion baht. Mr Apichart said first-half revenue was better than expected, thanks to the better sentiment after the deluge dampened demand last year.

from public and private organizations, namely Hua Hin International Airport, Tourism Authority of Thailand, Tourist Police Office, Customs Officers and local business in Hua Hin, gave a warm welcome to 30 tourists and representatives of tourism business companies from Malaysia who took the ATR-72 plane of 72 seats from Malaysia. The flight was operated by Berjaya Air, Malaysia. According to Mr. Nopporn, Hua Hin is now becoming one step more international after the Malaysian airline and tourism business entrepreneurs there realized the capacity of Hua Hin thanks to its safety, hard working officers and excellent accommodations. More importantly, the city is a gateway to southern provinces of Thailand like Chum Phon, Surat Thani, Phuket and Had Yai besides other neighboring provinces like Phetchaburi and Nakhon Pathom. Mr. Nopporn added that Malaysian tourists like Hua Hin because they are attracted to high standard golf courses here. When Thailand becomes a member of

ASEAN Community in 2015, Hua Hin and Malaysia will certainly be connected in terms of tourism. Mr. Cheng informed that the flight made from Malaysia to Hua Hin was the first one made to Thailand. It was also an official opening of the Hua Hin-Malaysia and vice versa flight made by this airline. He added that Berjaya operated direct flights from Malaysia to Hua Hin without any transit in Bangkok, thus saving time and money spent for a visit to Cha -Am and Hua Hin. The Malaysia-Hua Hin flight will attract Malaysian golfers to play golf in Hua Hin more because they can conveniently come to Hua Hin and play golf here at many famous golf courses, such as The Eagle, Banyan, Black Mountain, Majestic and Springfield among others, said Mr. Cheng. Berjaya Air will offer 3 flights weekly on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Each flight takes around 2

The Mall Group

to Launch BLUPART Hua Hin

T

wo big business companies of Thailand: Prayurawit and The Mall Group, will invest 4 billion Baht to transform Hua Hin to a new recretational, shopping, entertainment, fashion and restaurant hub of the country for both Thai and foreign visitors. On 20 October 2012 at the Intercontinental Hua Hin Hotel, the former Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Suwat Liptapanlop organized a ceremony to declare and celebrate joint-business cooperation between the Managing Director of Prayurawit Co. Ltd. Mrs. Jaraspim Liptapanlop and the Vice Chairperson of The Mall Group Co. Ltd. Mrs. Supalak Ampuch. The two companies will carry out the BLUPART project on

the 25 Rai western area in front of the Intercontinental Hua Hin Hotel. Worth 3,500 million Baht for all buildings and 500 million Baht for the plot of land, the project will be completed within the next 2 years and 6 months. With complete facilities including hotels, resorts, shopping complex that boasts all Thai and foreign fashionaable goods, famous restaurants, banks, cineplex and fitness centers, the BLUPART project will be bigger and supercede any lifestyle venues in Bangkok and other provinces of the country. It will also create a unique identity of Hua Hin, a famous beachfront town of Thailand. According to Mr. Suwat, the BLUPART will upgrade Hua Hin as the Riviera of Thailand because the city enjoys the longstretching beaches of hundred kilometers and top-notched accommodations and entertainment venues the same as the French Riviera or beaches in Morocco and Italy. He added that it was a good opportunity that Prayurawit and The Mall Group joined the project to fulfill the charm of Hua Hin and attract small and medium sized business onwers as well as Thai and foreign tourists who like to visit the city in either high or low seasons. With the BLUPART, Hua Hin will create the first super high season for tourists and will be ranked the 5th most grequented tourist

attraction apart from Koh Samui. Phuket, Pattaya and Chiang Mai. “An urban development plan was initiated for Hua Hin during the government of Dr. Thaksin Shinawatra because the city boasts tourist attractions, such as Klai Kangwon Royal Palace, Hua Hin Royal Golf Course, Chatchai Night Market and Chiva Som,” said Mr. Suwat. “As a result, a new innovation needs to be made to keep the city up with modern time.” Mr. Suwat added that, when he was the Transport Minister, he worked with the owner of Chiva Som H.E. Bunchoo Rojasathira to successfully renovate the Boh Fai Airport (Hua Hin). Now, he is campaigning on the high-speed express train from Bangkok to Hua Hin of which construction of the railroad has already been completed in Ratchaburi. The current government already approved in principles and budget, so this project will hopefully be finished in 2017. In terms of traffic congestion in Hua Hin, Mr. Suwat informed that he discussed about the problem with the government and got a 160 million Baht budget to construct a bypass from Tab Tai to Hua Na-Nong Kae. This expressway, to be completed in 2013, will faciliate those who would like to come to Hua Hin without passing its central area and effectively improve the city’s urban plan system and traffic in the future.

The Deputy Director of TAT’s Prachuap Khirikhan Office Mr. Natpakhan Akkharawit said that it was a good occasion that Berjaya Air offered a new route to Hua Hin directly from Malaysia because more tourists there would come here easily and spend more time for their holiday here. He added that, in 2011 alone, 1,900,000 visitors from Thailand and other countries came to Hua Hin. This means an income of over 17 billion Baht for the business here. It is expected that at the end of 2012, there will be 3% more of tourists and income to the city. Suan Dusit Rajabhat University (Hua Hin Campus) is going to offer Thai students overseas courses at universities in China as a plan towards the upcoming ASEAN Community in the next 3 years.

ccording to the Director of SDRU (Hua Hin Campus) Dr. Suraphol Siriseth, the campaign on flood relief carried out by the university was successful thanks to a donation of 100,000 Baht from Thai and foreign tourists in Hua Hin and the university itself. This amount of money was already spent for 19 fiber glass boats which were recently given to schools and universities in the lower north and upper Central of Thailand where the floods occurred. The boats will be used should flooding hits the areas. Dr. Suraphol also informed that the SDRU (Hua Hin Campus) would offer a new educational opportunity for its students in the beginning of 2013. The University President Dr. Sirot Pholphanthin lately officiated the learning and teaching program for Thai students in China. The program will be

carried out both in short-term and in 4-year bachelor degree courses. Previously, the courses were launched as a pilot project and enjoyed huge success. In terms of short-term courses, Thai students will be able to study at Hu Nan University from 1 March to 30 April 2013, or at U-Chow University from 5 March to 4 May 2013, or at Kwang Zhi Teacher College from 7 March to 8 May 2013 and at Yu Zhi University from 11 March to 10 May 2013. All of them concern mainly Chinese language and cost 38,500 Baht which includes an airplane round trip ticket, accommodation, textbooks and tuition fee. In case the students’ parents would like them to study for a bachelor degree, the Chinese government

allows SDRU to send highschool students from Thailand who already completed grade 12 to study there without taking any Chinese speaking tests. The 4-year course costs 320,000 Baht altogether. 80,000 Baht will have to be paid each year for tuition fee and accommodation. For more information on the two courses, please contact tel. 081 852 4973 and 086 505 4505 before the end of this year so that the university will make a travel schedule. “It’s a good opportunity for Thai students who can enjoy higher education at Chinese universities because China is becoming more powerful in terms of world economy. Currently, Chinese is used as also a language of business negotiation, so knowing the

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, except Papa’s mouse. The computer was humming, the icons were hopping, As Papa did last minute Internet shopping. The stockings were hung by the modem with care In hope that St. Nicholas would bring new software. The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of computer games danced in their heads. PageMaker for Billy, and Quicken for Dan, And Carmen San Diego for Pamela Ann. The letters to Santa had been sent out by Mom, To santaclaus@toyshop.northpole.com Which has now been re-routed to Washington State Because Santa’s workshop has been bought by Bill Gates. All the elves and reindeer have had to skedaddle To flashy new quarters in suburban Seattle. After centuries of a life that was simple and spare, St. Nicholas is suddenly a new billionaire, With a shiny red Porsche in the place of his sleigh, And a house on Lake Washington that’s just down the way From where Bill has his mansion, the old fellow preens In black Gucci boots and red Calvin Klein jeans. The elves have stock options and desks with a view, Where they write computer code for Johnny and Sue. No more dolls or toy soldiers or little toy drums (ahem - pardon me) No more dolls or tin soldiers or little toy drums Will be under the tree, only compact disk ROMS With the Microsoft label. So spin up your drive, From now on Christmas runs only on Win95. More rapid than eagles the competitors came, And Bill whistled, and shouted, and called them by name. “Now, ADOBE! Now, CLARIS! Now, INTUIT! too, Now, APPLE! and NETSCAPE! you are all of you through, It is Microsoft’s SANTA that the kids can’t resist, It’s the ultimate software with a traditional twist Recommended by no less than the jolly old elf, And on the package, a picture of Santa himself. Get ‘em young, keep ‘em long, is Microsoft’s scheme, And a merger with Santa is a marketer’s dream. To the top of the NASDAQ! to the top of the Dow! Now dash away! dash away! dash away - wow!” And Mama in her ‘kerchief and I in my cap, Had just settled down for a long winter’s nap, When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, The whir and the hum of our satellite platter, As it turned toward that new Christmas star in the sky, The SANTALITE owned by the Microsoft guy. As I sprang from my bed and was turning around, My computer turned on with a Jingle-Bells sound. And there on the screen was a smiling Bill Gates Next to jolly old Santa, two arm-in-arm mates. And I heard them exclaim in voice so bright, Have a Microsoft Christmas, and to all a good night.

he play, Vivaha Pra Samut, was written by His Majesty, King Rama the Sixth as a vehicle to educate his people toward peaceful social evolution and the use of the art of diplomacy during times of great change. The play tells a story about the King of an imaginary island during a moment of tremendous social change. Faced with choices between the old and new ways, pressured by both domestic and foreign influences; the plot hinges on whether or not the King will sacrifice his daughter to the Sea God as his bride according to an ancient custom; if the King ignores the custom he risks reactions from one direction but if he follows it, he risks following an idea that may not be valid for his contemporary society. His Majesty, King Rama the Sixth gifted his people with this play as a way to learn about and to consider important social choices that can create an intelligent, compassionate and progressive society.

Jacques and Mandy are both originally from South Africa but met while living in London. They were married in 2000 and spent the next 7 years in the UK working to travel. In 2007 they packed up and went to Australia where they did their first 4x4 trip up the east coast of Oz from Brisbane; to Cape York, across to Darwin and then down the middle to Melbourne and up to Sydney where stopped and settled (but not for long!). “Our dream (and plan) now is to do a trip from Australia to London taking in Russia, Mongolia, the Stans and western Europe and on to London, after which we will then head from London down the east coast of Africa to our native land - South Africa.” Jaques : “I think the whole idea started just before Christmas 2011. We were always going to do another trip; it was just a matter

By GMoss of how and when. We played around with a few ideas of which one was to go on my motorbike. We chatted about it all for a little while and before we knew it, we were standing in Brixton cycles, talking to the very helpful staff, test riding some of the bikes and getting the correct frame size. Just like that, in a blink of an eye, we were committed to it all. We paid our deposit and were told the bikes will be ready to collect the next week with all the changes we asked for. It was as easy as that, or will it really be? Only time will tell.” They started off after Australia through Indonesia in june 2012 and spend a few nights in Hua Hin in November before continueing through Thailand on their trip to London ! Did you know – Bicycle dimensions for a touring bike is completely different to that of a normal road bike or mountain bike. Their bikes are made by Surly and They´re using the ‘Long Haul Trucker’. A ‘no-frills’bike which should be able to do the job. For excellent service and good advice on the Surly bikes, go to Brixton cycles in London.

aged about 20 years old walked up and sat on his lap. Now, we all know that Santa doesn’t usually take requests from adults, but she smiled very nicely at him, so he asked her, ‘What do you want for Christmas?’ ‘Something for my mother, please,’ replied Emily sweetly. ‘Something for your mother? Well, that’s very loving and thoughtful of you,’ smiled Santa. ‘What do would you like me to bring her?’ Without turning a hair Emily answered quickly, ‘A son-in-law.’

Before they could even say ‘get on yer bike’, it was time to pack up once again and make final preparations for their next adventure. They still don’t know how they actually decided on this one, probably another one of those ‘spur of the moment’ ideas. They started just south of the Equator, in Indonesia, heading north from there through SE Asia into southern China before making a u-turn to go south once again through Vietnam before hopping onto a plane to continue in India to finally reach Nepal. They had a few short trips to try and prepare theirselves for things ahead. The first was to the Netherlands, one of the most bicycle friendly countries in the world. If they couldn’t hack it there, then they would have been in real trouble. It was also used as a test for Jacques’ knee and Mandy’s ITB injury. Both injuries healed fairly well, but still in need of some physio work. Fingers crossed the trip will be injury free. “ We’ll see you when we get there!” Check out their entire adventures on : www. seeyouwhenwegetthere.com

t was a positive surprise how many people reacted and commented on my thoughts on Europe. One question, however, came up more than others: What’s at present happening in the USA. Is it all same same like in Europe? Is it even worse? Reason enough to take closer look:

Looking at US budget figures is indeed no walk in the park and requires no academic background to get the picture. Spending roughly four trillion dollars a year and having an income of a little more than two trillion dollars won’t work in the long run. In the past no problem as banks, companies and even foreign governments like the Chinese had been buying US bonds and therefore included the United States into their prayers. Lately, this is changing, the trust of creditors to get paid back in non-inflated dollars is almost destroyed, but as long as Uncle Sam comes up with interest payments the show goes on. Not long ago total US debt passed the mark of 14,000,000,000,000 trillion dollars, what equals the entire GDP of the United States. The US Government is in a classic catch 22 situation. If they cut spending, US citizens have less to spend. Increasing taxes on the other hand to solve the problem is –as a figure of speech- not exactly the American way. Only easy way out: Print money! This is what we see for some time now. The facts are painful, but undisputed. Even, if the US cut all government spending, there would still be a deficit (!). No suspense there. But what are the consequences? How to get out of this vicious circle?

By Christian Rasp Is hyperinflation in the US really the only way out? Will this necessarily trigger a global economic collapse as many experts foresee? I don’t think so, because that would be the worst alternative for the whole world. Sure, we will see more inflation than in the past. But let crisis day X come. I would assume in the light of an acute crisis Democrats and Republicans might find a way to agree on both, substantial tax raises on the one hand and spending cuts on the other. Maybe even a controlled haircut of all debt (enough to get out of the hopeless end of the scale, but not as much to upset the whole world) in combination with substantially increased income figures from e.g. gas exports, might do the trick. My point is, don’t count out the United States too early. Comparing the States to Europe, it is true that debt is a huge problem in both worlds. But let’s not overlook, the US are in trouble, because they lived beyond their means for too long. Their system itself, however, is working properly. All States like California, Arizona, etc. clear their debt once a year. No accumulation of problems at this level! If a haircut should become necessary one day, those who lent the money lose in the first place. In Euroland on the other hand, the system itself doesn’t work. Competitive nations in the North share one currency with less competitive nations in the South and have consequently to finance their deficits one way or the other. The day the system bounces, the European taxpayer will directly pay for losses the EZB has socialized without having a mandate to do so. Big difference! At the end of the day, I am less concerned about the United States than about Europe. Let’s see what happens. Winner takes it all! Courtesy of Christian Rasp Director CRMC (Thailand)Co.Ltd. fter the debacle with Guernsey and HMRC, the whole QROPS market went into a frenzy of activity, the various jurisdictions looking to be the front runner in this huge Market. For those of you who aren’t familiar with main bone of contention between Guernsey and HMRC, the main argument HMRC put forward was that, for any approved jurisdiction, the tax regime for drawdown payments to beneficiaries should be the same for residents and non-residents alike. When Guernsey dropped income tax for its own residents to zero in response, thus creating an income tax free environment for pensions, HMRC replied by de-listing over 300 of the schemes based there, notwithstanding the fact that any tax payable would not benefit the UK Exchequer in any way. This action related to new cases and was not retrospective, thereby leaving those already holding their QROPS in Guernsey unaffected from a tax perspective. There is little doubt that HMRC do not like the advantages afforded to Expatriates by the QROPS legislation. The way they reacted to Guernsey and the fact that they ‘tinker’ with the rules clearly demonstrates this. Nonetheless, the EU insists on ‘portability’ of pension benefits for Expatriates who are non-resident for tax purposes and that means the UK has to comply. From this whole affair, there are certain jurisdictions with existing approval and, in some cases, new schemes which now have approval from HMRC, based on a very low tax rate on pension drawdown. Seemingly, we are reverting back to a system reserved previously for legitimate tax planning arrangements where every year the budget would try to block or move the goal posts for new applicants but leave those with schemes in force alone. Therefore, this adds an element of urgency

f you are applying as a teacher then read no further, different regulations apply. Preparing and Reviewing of Documents. First, check some basics about the commercial company. This is the most important thing! If you are applying to be a teacher or journalist, please don’t read further. For your occupation, different regulations and requirements are followed. For other occupations, please continue… 1. REGISTERED CAPITAL. The minimum amount of registered capital required per work permit in the company is dependent upon the status of the company and the work permit applicant. If your company requires one work permit and the applicant is married with a Thai national, then the required amount of registered capital is 1,000,000 Baht. If your company is registered with BOI (Board of Investment), you can obtain multiple work permits without needing to increase the registered capital, depending upon the agreement reached with BOI. However, it is important to note that BOI companies need to be set up with a minimum of 1,000,000 Baht of registered capital. If your company does not have BOI approval and your foreign employees are not married with Thai nationals then you will require 2,000,000 Baht of registered capital per work permit holder. 2. THAI EMPLOYEES. There are requirements for minimum numbers of Thai employees per work permit; this is dependent upon the status of the company. BOI approved companies usually have a relaxed ratio of Thai employees to foreign work permit holders. However, other companies will require 4 Thai employees for every work permit. It is important to note that there is an exception to this rule. If the company was formed less than one year prior to submitting the work permit application, the officer will accept 2 Thai employees per work permit. However, when coming to renew the work permit, the usual regulations will be enforced and the company will therefore require at least 4 Thai employees per work permit. Whereas, when applying for the extenstion of stay the immigration requires the company to have at least 4 Thai employees listed in Social Security Fund 3 months prior to the application. This is a compulsory requirement from the Immigration. 3. TAX, VAT AND SOCIAL FUND. Your company is paying tax and VAT and has the paper work in order. If your company address is in Bangkok, you will also need to ensure that you have paid the first month’s social fund for your Thai employees, keeping the receipt as evidence of this. In other locations around Thailand, you may be required to show more than one month’s social fund receipts, dependent upon the regulations in your province. This is very important. Companies with “office in the pocket” are not eligible to apply for a work permit for you!

to anyone considering transferring the pension pot to a QROPS because it appears that every year HMRC will, in some way, try to narrow the terms, or place restrictions and/or obstacles in the way. Also, for the time being, HMRC are not approving many new schemes, anywhere. That being the case, the schemes that do have approval, with attractive terms for those looking to move their pension benefits are seeing exceptional levels of enquiry. For anyone considering moving their pension fund to a QROPS, who is imminently moving abroad, or already an expatriate, keep in mind that if HMRC change the rules again, or de-list a jurisdiction for future applicants and your transfer is in process, it will not go through. Last April, when the aforementioned spat with Guernsey occurred, many people were left in limbo for a while until it became clear that unless the actual funds had been transferred, the QROPs application would no longer be able to proceed. Submitting an application for a QROPS was not sufficient. In some cases, where individuals had pension monies coming from 2 or more previous schemes, unless all the schemes had transferred by the HMRC deadline, the application had again to be cancelled with any money already transferred to be either returned to the original scheme or another home found that suited the client which, in many cases, meant waiting for ‘the dust to settle’ until suitable schemes became apparent, which is only very recently. The transfer process is close to being as long as a piece of string. We’ve had cases take 3 or 4 weeks and many that have taken months. With that in mind and the next budget in the not too distant future, those interested in moving to a QROPS should be thinking about getting things underway sooner rather than later.

4. Prepare all the paperwork for work permit application. Make three copies of everything that you will need for Immigration listed below. 5. Collect all the required documents for the Non-Immigrant “B” visa application. You will also require 2 passport photos. 6. Make 1 copy of the photo page of the passport and 1 passport color photo. 7. Check that your passport is valid for at least 12 months when processing the extension of stay. Otherwise, you will run the risk of having the extension of stay end on the date of the expiration of the passport.

Obtaining a Non-Immigrant Visa

Your foreign employees will need to obtain a NonImmigrant visa before they can get the actual work permit. This can sometimes be obtained at Immigration if going through 2 step process from visa exempt entry/tourist visa to Non-B visa to extension of stay based on employment(see below) but most of the time outside of Thailand at a Thai Embassy or Consulate. Please note that work permits can also be applied for if you have a extension of stay based on marriage or a 90 day “O” visa if you show proof of marriage, but cannot be applied for if you hold a 90 day NON-O Retirement Visa or an 90 day Education Visa or extension of stay based on education or extension of stay based on retirement. If the foreigner holds either a 30 day visa exemption stamp or tourist visa entry or a 60 day tourist visa, this can sometimes be converted into a Non-Immigrant entry inside the Kingdom; providing your company and the foreigner have the complete set of documents required by Immigration for extension of stay. To ensure that enough time is allocated to complete this visa conversion process, we recommend having at least 21 days remaining on the foreigner’s permitted entry before processing the Non-Immigrant “B” visa. Please be aware that a change of visa cannot be carried out at One Stop Service and some offices will require it be done in Bangkok. Some cities such as Pattaya refuse to convert a tourist visa or tourist visa exemption stamp to a “B” visaas part of the 2 step process. It should be note that some Thai Embassy or Consulate would only be able to grant a 90-Days Single Entry Non-Immigrant “B” Visa, while some Thai Embassy or Consulate would be able to grant 1-Year Multiple Entry Non-Immigrant “B” Visa. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to check the eligibility policy of the Thai Embassy/Consulate that you would be traveling to. ...How to get a Thai work permit continued next issue...

aghdad Gourmet Society is an illustrious collection of people who likes to gather, enjoy a drink and/or glass of finest wine, cook, talk, being together and eat. It was founded in 1983 by four expatriates working in Baghdad, Iraq, with the purpose to have a break once a week from work and to make the leisure time a bit more interesting. In the beginning it was a mix of restaurant visits and cooking in their own kitchens, but after a while, their own cooking became the main focus, even though no member had any education in this field. Since then, the Society has grown and now counts 16 active members, scattered all over the world and focus is still on cooking. The Society meets once a year for a “cook-vention”, with a long weekend together, where a 5 - course dinner, served on a Saturday night is the focal point. The hosting changes every year; and this year, the creative exclusive meeting took place in Hua Hin on November 8-11 with 10 participating chefs, preparing the dinner, this time with a Thai flavour, a fusion of herbs, a lot of cream, precious liquors and superb beef and fish. It was an honour to be invited to these captains of industry that meet ever year. Scattered all over the world, they fly to their cooking destination, exchange news, plan the menue, go to the markets and local suppliers to buy only the finest ingredients for their creations. Compositions vary from a simple but tasty consommé or mushroom cream potage as an entrée combined with a royal tapas creation to Soul Muniere with a local touch as an intermediataire course whilst preparing a perfect cooked Grand Filet de Beouf carefully fried and touched off on a charcoal grill to give it this touch of Barbeque. It may go unmentioned that the side dishes are there to complement the main dish but they are as carefully prepared as the main dishes. The dinner was accompanied by the best matching wines and liquors served at the right time and right temperature. Undeniably fascinating is the way these gourmets deal with each other. They work together as a perfect team which you would only find at Paul Bocuse in Lyon. Once at the table the conversation turn on daily pleasant things of life as if the food wasn´t already a top treat. Needless to mention the beautiful feminine company that some of the Chefs brought with them. A great event, a great experience ! Let me know where on earth the next one will be. If I can I will come! .........Congratulations guys ! Check their Website at : http://www.baghdadgourmetsociety.com/

Heart disease is the No.1 killer in America. And this is true for not only men but also women. In fact, heart disease kills more women each year than all cancers combined. And yes, that includes breast cancer. But what really shocked me was this : Nearly one-third of ALL deaths are because of heart disease! The American Heart Association has identified major factors that put you at higher risk for developing this killer. Obviously, some can be changed or modified, and some can’t. So please indulge me for a few seconds. Check off all of these known risk factors you and your loved ones have: • Increasing age — Those 65 and older make up more than 83 percent of people who die from heart disease. • Heredity and race — Children of parents with heart disease are at higher risk to develop it themselves. And certain non-Caucasian races are also at higher risk. • Male gender — Men not only are at higher risk of heart attack but also have attacks earlier in life. • High blood pressure — This condition increases your risk of stroke, heart attack, and congestive heart failure. • High cholesterol — As I’m sure you know, this increases your risk of coronary heart disease. • Physical inactivity — A sedentary lifestyle puts you at higher risk. • Obesity and overweight — If you have excess body fat (particularly belly fat), you are more likely to develop heart disease and stroke — even if you have no other risk factors. • Tobacco smoke — If you smoke, your risk of developing coronary heart disease is two to four times higher than a nonsmoker’s. • Diabetes mellitus — This disorder seriously increases your risk of developing cardiovascular disease, particularly if your blood sugar is not well controlled. • Stress — Your response to the stress in your life also may be a contributing factor. • Drinking too much alcohol — This factor not only can elevate your blood pressure and lead to stroke or heart failure but also can contribute to many other problems for your heart and other organs. And clearly, as you can see from the sad statistics above, you should be worried. Live a healthier life – avoid sugar and salt – have your glass of good red wine – don´t smoke – eat less fatty food – avoid deep fried food – eat less shrimp and prawns – eat more deep sea fish – drink plenty of water daily ( 2 liters plus) - avoid mental stress – be happy – exercise regularly but do not exagerate !

f you were playing a game of word association and heard the word “yoga,” what would be the first thing that popped into your head? A lot of people would say “pretzel” or “hard,” but yoga can actually be quite simple. If you got out of bed and stretched your arms up this morning, you already did a yoga pose. Yoga introduces a mindfulness to stretching, so that you pay attention to your alignment and how the positions really feels in your body. A lot of basic yoga postures can feel very familiar, even if it’s been a few years since your last P.E. class. Here is a sequence of ten poses that look simple but will stretch and strengthen your major muscle groups.

1. Mountain Pose - Tadasana

Just because these poses are simple doesn’t mean that they are going to be easy. Bringing new awareness to a position you think your know can actually be very challenging. Take mountain pose, which may look like just standing around. In a yoga context, however, there is a lot going on in this position. The heels root down, the muscles of the legs are engaged, the bones are stacked with the shoulders directly over the hips, the shoulder blades slide down the back, and the crown of the head rises. Don’t forget to breath!

2. Raised Arms Pose - Urdhva Hastansana

Inhale and bring your arms up and over your head. This is your basic morning stretch, but you are focusing on keeping the good alignment you established in mountain pose, particularly staying grounded in the heels and keeping your shoulders moving away from your ears at the same time that you reach up through your fingertips. Your gaze can come up to the hands, which can be shoulder’s width apart or palms touching.

3. Standing Forward Bend - Uttanasana

Exhale and fold over your legs into a forward bend. If the hamstrings feel a little tight at first, bend the knees so that you can release your spine. Let the head hang heavy. Slowly straighten the legs if you like but keep the head hanging. The feet can be touching or hip’s distance apart, whichever feels better.

4. Garland Pose - Malasana

Move your feet out to the edges of your mat and bend your knees, coming into a squat. The toes may turn out if necessary. If your heels do not reach the floor, take a rolled up blanket under them. This is a position that is quite natural for children but we lose the knack for it as adults. It’s great for the hips and to counteract the effects of too much sitting in chairs and riding in cars. It’s also a very useful pose.

5. Lunge Pose

Straighten your legs and move your feet back under your hip before stepping your left leg to the back of your mat and bending your right knee for a deep lunge. Try to bring your bent knee directly over your ankle so your right thigh is parallel to the floor. Keep the left leg straight and strong with your heel reaching back. If this is too intense, you can drop your left knee to the mat instead. Stay five breaths before returning the left foot to the front of your mat next to the right one. Then repeat the lunge with the left foot forward and the right leg back.

6. Plank Pose

After your second lunge, step the left foot back so that it is next to the right foot at the back of your mat. This is the classic preparation for a push-up. Stay five breaths here while making sure that your hips do not drop too low or rise too high. If your elbows tend to hyperextend, microbend them. Bring your knees down if necessary. After five breaths, release your knees to the mat and come back to sit on your heels, resting for a moment.

7. Staff Pose

After catching your breath, swing your legs around so that they are outstretched in front of you. This is the seated equivalent of mountain pose, in that it seems very simple but has a lot going on. The legs stay strong with the feet flexed. The shoulders stack over the hips so that the spine is long and straight. The arms may be straight or slightly bent.

8. Seated Forward Bend - Paschimottanasana

On an exhalation, bring your torso over your legs in a forward bend. Your hamstrings should be warmer now than when you did your standing forward bend earlier. Work with your breath, lengthening the spine on each inhale and deepening your forward fold on each exhale. Stay for five breaths, keeping the feet flexed.

9. Head to Knee Pose - Janu Sirsasana

Come back up to sit and bend your left leg, bringing the sole of the left foot inside your right thigh. Use the same technique described above to deepen the pose using your breath. After five breaths, sit up and switch legs.

10. Happy Baby Pose - Ananda Balasana

Lie down on your back and hug your knees into your chest. Then separate your knees and bring each ankle directly over its knee so that the shins are perpendicular to the floor. Flex your feet and hold onto them from the outside as your draw your knees downward. Roll side to side a bit on your sacrum if it feels good. This is a position that is familiar to anyone with children. Resist the urge to put your toes in your mouth. After five breaths, stretch your legs out on the

Mondo Vino

Written by Elizabeth Frantz Larson A good glass of wine is a much missed treat for many foreigners living and traveling in Thailand and it can be hard to find the right place that serves fine wines from all over the world at an affordable place in a relaxing setting. Look no further, we have just the place! Mondo Vino is located in the center of the city of Hua Hin on Naeb Kaehat Road, and is the perfect spot to try specialty wines from around the globe and relax in the pleasant atmosphere. Mondo Vino promotes, sells and distributes a variety of wines to customers in Thailand at competitive prices but never compromising on quality. With a perfect outdoor garden setting, high vaulted ceilings and modern but inviting interior this high end wine bar and shop is your wine oasis in the Kingdom of Thailand.

Owners Peter Kirketerp and Khun Sirikorn Kirketerp (Nee) opened the location in 2010, taking inspiration from their favorite shop in Verona, Italy, and they offer a huge selection of wine and specialty beers. The assortment of wines at Mondo Vino come from the some of the best wine making countries on Earth including Italy, Spain, South Africa, Argentina and New Zealand and the staff at Mondo Vino serves only the best. The couple started Mondo Vino when they saw a need and good potential for a place where people could buy classic, fine wines in Hua Hin, and it was the perfect match for their Italian restaurant. Mondo Vino is not only a wine shop but also a high-end classic wine bar. The wine bar hosts events such as wine tasting from guest vineyards, exclusive art exhibitions and popular weekly social nights.

Hua Hin Floating Market located

The architecture and decoration is based on the identity of old Hua Hin and they want travelers who visit there to be able to experience the lifestyle of the Thai people. Shops are fashioned in the style of 1920s Hua Hin, offering a broad range of merchandise ranging from artsy handmade crafts to yummy snacks. Many of the spaces here are kept by local Thai families selling specialized and homemade products and you are supporting the community and local people when you shop at this market. A shopper’s paradise, the management at this floating market is adamant about keeping customers happy and no more than 2 stalls in the market are allowed to sell the same things. The creators of Hua Hin’s floating market wanted to make a place that took the well known traditions of Thai floating markets and combine it with quality products to make for a fun- filled day shopping with the family!

on soi 112, about 6km from the town centre, has been open since August 2011 and is the perfect way to spend a day with family or friends. Each one of the buildings surrounding the large lake in the Thai countryside, are named after cities in several provinces in Thailand and there are signs in Thai and English to help you navigate your way around the sprawling market complex. The market has a circular layout and a wooden walkway meanders through the market, with people being able to cross over the bridges and reach all the shops in one complete circle. It is one of the area’s top destinations and has the feel of a traditional market with monks riding through on their alms rounds and boats with vendors selling food and goods to Thai and Western visitors. Unlike any other floating market in Thailand, this one was built in an elegant and vintage style, but still lets guests experience traditional Thai culture, making it a must see when visiting Hua Hin.

In addition to selling some of the best fine wines in Hua Hin, they also host wine tasting parties with their restaurant La Grappa, who serve up delicious and authentic Italian food that pairs perfectly with the wines being served. They host several wine tasting events each month for people to try new wines and meet new people. Every Thursday at Mondo Vino they have a free flow event where they feature a few red and white wines as well as a buffet. Mondo Vino is also a popular spot for Ladies Night in Hua Hin and Khun Nee says the top choice for the ladies is Prosecco, a dry sparkling wine and coming soon they will be working with a local charity hosting a Prosecco event for breast cancer. With impeccable and personal service and the best wines from around the world, it is a the

perfect low key spot to meet up with friends after a long day of work (or visiting Hua Hin’s floating market) to complete the day with a fabulous glass of vino. The owner Peter wants it to be known that the overwhelming word used to describe Mondo Vino is “enjoyment” and hopes people will seize the opportunity at Mondo Vino to enjoy a good glass of wine with friends and family in a welcoming and comfortable environment. You can visit their website http://www. mondovino.co.th or stop by to try some amazing wines that can be hard to find in Thailand. If you would like to see more about Mondo Vino, you can go to theitravelchannel. tv to watch their episode feauring Mondo Vino, where they talk with the owners and show you the inside of this trendy wine shop.

The market is also known for its food and the best part of walking around and enjoying the sights is trying a few tasty treats from food vendors along the way! There is so much to keep you busy at this market and not everyone realizes that you can spend a

whole day here and not run out of things to do! There are cute coffee shops and restaurants to spend a leisurely meal or get a ice cold Thai tea. Make sure you walk over to Hua Hin Floating Market’s farm and enter a whole new world! Not your regular petting zoo, you can bottle feed fish and mingle with goats! It is the perfect spot to play around with the kids or just unwind after a long day of shopping with some animal therapy! They also feature boat tours and three daily cultural performances, including an elephant show! The market is open daily from 9:30 to 7:30 with extended hours on the weekends. Hua Hin Mayor Opens His Heart as a good Father

very December is the month of Father’s Day E honoring our King Bhumipol. December 5, is the birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama

IX) which is a special day where the people of Thailand pay honor to the King and also for us to celebrate the day with our own fathers. Hua Hin Today has exclusively interviewed one of Hua Hin’s most iconic people, Mr. Nopporn Vudhikun, our newly elected Mayor of Hua Hin city. He is also known to all Hua Hin municipality members and Hua Hin people as “Taan Na-Yok Nui” (Taan is a personal pronoun used specifically for high ranked person while Na-Yok is a short saying for mayor and Nui is his nick name). The 47 year old mayor was born and raised in Hua Hin by his lovely family. He was schooled at Hua Hin Vithayalai School at an early age and continued studying his Bachelor degree at Ratchapat Jombung, Ratchburi and graduated an MBA at Ratchapat Suandusit, Hua Hin. With a strong determined leadership in his blood, his goal has always been to develop Hua Hin community through the voice of the people. His political career started in 1994. In 1995 he failed at this first bid to become Mayor. That did not stop Mayor Nopporn. With the support of his family and with the determination that he has a good reputation for Mayor Nopporn stands where he is today as a true leader in the community that he loves. How do you raise your children and how it differs to western culture? The father of 21, 18 and 13 year old children revealed: “I have been raised by a traditional Thai family. Our world today has changed, modern

technology and western culture have played an important role in our lifestyle. Of course, our traditional Thai way is definitely different to Western. I have been using Thai and Western combinations to raise my children. My motto is to overseeing the current reality more than sticking to the absolute old fashion.” He added “good communication is very important and it is what I try to teach my children by showing examples with consequences to let them think and decide by themselves. I will still be very close to them whenever they need”. Tell us about your upbringing? The warm-hearted father of 3 has explained “in my childhood, I have been taught that when committing a wrong thing, a whack by a tree branch would be the punishment. This is still a common practice since the old days.” “When I was growing up, we had one television to share with all family members. At the end of the day, everybody would sit and talk to each other in front of television. But today everyone has his own television in bedroom with computer and telephone or mobile. This separates us from having a close contact like the old days.” “I think to raise and understand our children today is harder than in the past when it was much easier to care for children. The reality is they have their own world with real-time communication and modern technology.” What impresses you about your children most? “They have been well behaved and highly responsible. This makes my wife and I very proud of them. I believe that most parents feel the same.”

What are your favorite sports? “When I was a child, I was very into several sports. My brothers and I were very good at table tennis. Basketball is my favorite sport.” What do you do on your free time? “I play futsal, football and golf. He smiled: “I have started to sing karaoke, oh well….still I am not a good singer, only a beginner. Is it English music? “No (he blushed) just Thai songs. In the evening, I often go to funeral ceremonies, this may sound weird, it is not my hobby, but it is part of my routine and job. There are usually no less than 20 visits in a month. I believe that every funeral I visit, I come to pay respect and pass my condolence to people who need it with my genuine contribution” What is your favorite restaurant? “I have my own busy restaurant called “Rue Rim Tharn” located in Khao Takieb we serve Thai and International food”. We understand you have many responsibilities, projects and work to take care of on a daily basis, how do you look after yourself and also be effective in getting the job done? “Before we can help others, we have to be healthy and ready ourselves to help people anytime. I exercise everyday at least 30 to 40 minutes. I used to do sit-ups and jogging, but today I do hula-hoop 5 mornings a week. I usually wake up at 5.45 am. Start with drinking at least 1 l. of water, then exercise, shower and pray before breakfast. This enables me to stay sharp and be ready to

To look after your facial skin intensively,

work hard and support my team to keep Hua Hin moving forward.” What is your view for a happy life? “We have to learn from many new situations that come to our life and learn how to live with it. Acceptance and realization of reality is the key to be happy”. (“I truly believe this” he says with a happy smile). What is your New Year wish for the people of Hua Hin? “May everyone receive the best luck and a wonderful fresh start in the new year.”

check out simple tips that many people may oversee Dr. Aorapan Lakkanawong from Dermatology and Laser Center at Viphawadi Hospital, Bangkok, revealed easy steps & techniques to pamper your facial skin.

“Many Thai women misunderstood that using only facial whitening products will smoothen and brighten their skin. It is true that a whitening product helps whitening and reduces melanin. In fact, without using sunscreen correctly and properly, you may not see the best results. “The best practice is to use a suitable sunscreen for your facial skin with minimum SPF 30+. Apply on your face at least 20 minutes before going outside or in the sun. If you need to be outdoors or exposed to sunlight for several hours, you should apply 1 hour to 1 ½ one hours, at the least half a teaspoon of cream and spread it evenly over your face. “For skin tightening and wrinkle reduction, the use of anti-wrinkle products have helped to some extent. There are new innovations that helps strengthen and tightening by Botox injections to reduce wrinkles, crow’s feet wrinkles and marks. Fillers injections are a cosmetic treatment used to smooth wrinkles or pitted scars in the skin, usually on the face. The filler raises or puffs up the affected area and it usually goes away over time. Dr. Thimaporn Pattayakorn, dermatologist specialist said about the new technology: “The latest innovation at the Dermatology and Laser Center at Viphawadi Hospital, fractional RF technology by radio frequency (RF) has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration USA (USFDA) as a safe and effective way to create collagen and re-order the old collagen that makes it possible to tighten the sagging skin and wrinkles including scars caused by acne. Technology is another alternative to help restore the smoothness of the skin.”
