EDITORIAL FOREWORD

Looking at a modern version of the bible, which a lot of people including myself consider as a history book, the book of psalms tells us that we should avoid mockers and wicked who at the end of their life cycle will find judgement. Those who do right will prosper. Let it be so. However sitting back and being a good guy or girl is not the way of success and prosperity. Fortunately there are those among us that go that extra mile. One of those is Dr. Michael Moreton of Bangkok hospital whom I called upon reporting several cases of hardship, health problems and those who needed help, not tomorrow but yesterday. Dr. Michael went out of his way to immediately help those who needed it. International calls were made to assure that equipment was ready for a patient arriving from the UK, needing life saving devices in order to enjoy a few days of holidays in Thailand. I am proud to call this doctor a friend. His support has been exemplary, not only through hospital facilities but also moral support for one of our own in Hua Hin that is suffering from a brain tumour. Thanks Michael! Property sales are waking up and there is more movement in real estate. Some stunning projects are beginning to grow out of their roots and international confidence in Thai tranquillity is showing results. The season started slow but is now ever

increasing. The statistics will show us the result in a little while. I met a Swiss gentleman the other day who is well over 80 and starting a building project in Pranburi. Paul is full of life and I will ask him what his secret is. May sell it to y´all. At Sukkasart Health Institute, however, Meditation, Yoga, Reiki and other oriental alternative health practises can also contribute towards gracefully proceeding into seniority, relieving those little aches that bother us and defragmenting your hard disk whilst deleting those hardly used files that only cause annoyance when opened. Learn to forgive man! Learn to think positive. Positive thinking was among 2 entrepreneurs who wanted to make a documentary film about Hua Hin and approached businessmen in Hua Hin and elsewhere boasting the cooperation of a well known TV station in Europe and an ever better known German moderator. Someone called the TV station and they knew nothing about this. In return they approached the TV star, who correctly denied using their name since he didn´t work there anymore since 1992. Well you can try. In my language, lies have short legs as they say. It was all probably not meant that way but the bullet went backwards. Don’t boast with false feathers.´ According to an Email send to Hua Hin Today, the German General Attorney is now interested in this case. Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden

has called for the world to boycott American goods and the U.S. dollar, blaming the United States and other industrialized countries for global warming, according to a new audiotape released Friday, Jan 14. I remember it being fossil fuels earlier this year, than the Iceland volcano and now oil which comes mainly from Arab countries and for which we pay an ever increasing unjustified price punishing not the economy but the lesser financially privileged small companies driving small trucks and motorcycles to do their daily trade. Just what is Chinese New Year? There’s actually a lot more to it than lion dances and firecrackers, although these two pieces of tradition are integral and more visible, Chinese New Year to China is like Christmas to the West. In essence, Chinese New Year is spending time with family, gift giving and, the all important, food-fest. About rabbits . if you are born in 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, you are a rabbit. Diplomats, Actors. Famous Rabbits: Michelangelo, Albert Einstein, Marie Curie. I am a rooster. That is why bunnies avoid me. Did you know that up Soi 112, about 5 Km. to the west , they are building a huge market and shops place? Will be finished in September, they say. A complex with shops , lakes , restaurants. Wow we´re growing. Hopefully the municipality will take a closer look at the back streets, all the Soi ending on Petchkasem Road and budget some concrete or asphalt for the pot holes. Traffic rules ? Lets not go there today. See y´all next month. GMoss

Department Stores opens its doors in Hua Hin P

ower Buy, one of the leading electrical appliances stores in Thailand, is opened in Hua Hin to serve the need for modern household electrical equipment of local people and foreigners living in the beachfront city. Owned by the Jirathiwat, one of the most wellknown Thai families who makes famous the Central Department Stores and the Central World in Bangkok, the Power Buy is located at the entrance of Soi Petchakasem 88. Covering 4-Rai areas, the store boasts various modern electrical appliances, namely LCD TVs, DVD players, electric fans, PCs, mobile phones, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners and kitchen utensils among others, said Mr. Suthisarn Jirathiwat, the Managing Director of the Power Buy. “All of our products are A-graded from leading brands like Samsung, Sony or Panasonic. They are manufactured in Thailand and already passed the quality assurance procedure. Plus, most of them are cheaper than those sold in Bangkok because middlemen were cut out,” said Mr. Suthisarn. “Moreover, we sell a lot of digital cameras of Canon, Nikon and Sony. The price ranges from 10,000 to 100,000 Baht.” The reason of establishing the Power Buy here is that Hua Hin is now fast growing, but still

retains classic and contemporary charms as the most famous beachfront city of Thailand. Favored by Thais and foreigners alike, Hua Hin is frequented by many visitors who come to stay and do shopping. Mr. Suthisarn also confirmed that all the products sold at the Power Buy were manufactured by leading companies of Japan and South Korea in Thailand. So, their quality is superior. “The Power Buy in Hua Hin is now in the promotional period as it’s been recently opened. So, all the products here are cheaper than those in Bangkok and our customers will find it convenient to do shopping here more than in Bangkok or even in other countries. And we’d like to do business with other retailers in Hua Hin because benefit will belong to customers, not us,” concluded the Managing Director of the Power Buy.

2010 Best Year Ever for Phuket Tourist Arrivals

Hua Hin and other Tourist Destinations expected to profit from the growth

P

Courtesy of C9 Hotelworks – Bill Barnett

HUKET, THAILAND – Phuket passenger traffic smashed all previous records with 3.5 million arrivals during 2010 - or 22% growth over the previous year – with new markets such as Russia and China emerging as the major drivers of growth. Leading consultancy firm C9 Hotelworks’ latest market research report, 2010 Phuket Hotel Market Update indicates annual tourism figures soundly recovered from early political angst to hit new highs. C9 Hotelworks Managing Director, Bill Barnett, said both Russia and China have emerged as star performers, with charter and direct flight capacity fast tracking growth. “The departure of legacy geographic markets has come at a cost with shrinking average room rates,” Mr Barnett said. “While new replacement players have become dynamic revenue sources, the shift in arrival markets continues to baffle hotel strategy sessions into how to capture these new revenue sources.” Data from the report highlights market capitulations and reactionary pricing resulting in a market-wide occupancy increase of 4%, offset by a 3% fall in room rates. During 2010 there were new hotel openings adding 1,389 keys, reflecting an increase of 3.2% for Phuket’s existing 43,036 rooms registered in accommodation establishments. Mr Barnett added the real storyline remains airlift as traffic surpassed 2007’s peak year by 19% with growth of 28% over 2009. China sprouted wings, ranking second overall among international source markets. “Patong is experiencing wildfire growth and a transforming change is underway for the central entertainment district where projections show more than 50% of new hotel supply will be massed over the next five years,” he said. “This evolution will see a destination emerging within a destination for the growing price sensitive mass tourism market.” “Thai developers increasingly dominate the overall hospitality investment horizon mainly in the midmarket segment, contributing 77% of new projects in the pipeline.” Umbrella future development for Phuket sees 5,749 more rooms, representing a 12.9% increase to existing supply. Delayed openings from 2010 pushed into 2011 of which 723 keys will contribute to total of 1,472 rooms entering supply this year. “But it’s not all blue sky for Phuket’s future,” Mr Barnett added. “Supply outpaced demand for the first time in a decade which undermines market stability. Key storylines for the year will be hotel transactions and increasingly vocal Phuket business owners and residents asking the poignant question – is more better? “ For further information and highresolution images, please contact: Bill Barnett, Managing Director, C9 Hotelworks Email: bill@c9hotelworks.com Telephone: +66 (0) 8 1956 1802

ousing market in Bangkok Metropolis has enjoyed its boom time in the first half of 2010, mainly because of the incentives granted by the Government.

Developers were very bullish and launched plenty of new projects, especially condominiums, in the third quarter. However, the Bangkok housing market has probably passed its peak, and will grow at a slower rate in 2011. Rising interest rates will be a major concern, along with the central bank’s efforts to rein in protective measures such as stricter loan-to-value ratio for mortgages. Election year will also bring in uncertainties and investors may adopt a wait-andsee attitude.

N

ationalities of condominium buyers in the Thai city of Pattaya have changed dramatically since 2010 – from the Europeans and Scandinavians working in the Asia Pacific region to local Thais and expatriates who reside in Bangkok, according to the latest Pattaya Market Report published by Knight Frank Thailand. The company’s Managing Director Phanom Kanjanathiemthao said that in the past, condominium projects in Pattaya were attracting buyers from the UK, Sweden, Norway, and Finland – many of whom were working in Asian countries such as Hong Kong, Singapore and China. However since 2010, the make-up of buyers has changed to Thais and local expatriates from Russia, Germany, the Middle East, Australia and India. Most of these expatriates live in Bangkok. “Most Indians buy condominiums for investment, while the Thais tend to buy as a holiday home There are because Pattaya is quite close to Bangkok. I can say that Thai buyers who buy condos in Pattaya some areas in Bangkok with prefer a similar lifestyle as in Bangkok. ope of passing a land and building tax bill in Thailand will have to be postponed until the next government, according to a report in the Bangkok Post newspaper.

Finance minister Korn Chatikavanij had vowed to pass the law since the beginning of the Abhisit Vejjajiva administration, but he recently admitted that his target to start tax collection on land and property by June could not be achieved. The bill is designed to reduce social inequality among Thais as 10 per cent of the population own more than 100 rai of land each while 90 per cent own less than one rai. Currently, the law is reviewed by the Council of State. According to Somchai Jitsuchon, research director of macroeconomic development and income distribution for the Thailand Development and Research Institute, a land tax could increase state revenue by THB100 billion (US$3.28 billion) a year. But he pointed that incumbents might not want to risk losing the votes and money of influential landlords.

He said: “If the government could collect tax properly by including people living outside the tax system, it could increase revenue without needing to raise tax rates.” Courtesy of www.property-report.com

Intrend Java Teak new furniture showroom

ntrend Java Teak has opened to some very good comments, customers have recognized the quality of the Indonesian Teak from Central Java and the skill of the craftsmen who make the furniture, which comes in both traditional and contemporary styles. Though

the furniture is not cheap most clients recognize that in relation to the high quality the prices are very fair and represent good value, especially when you consider that this furniture was built to last a life time and actually looks better as it matures with age. The decorative items from Java and Bali have also gone down well and these inexpensive items make wonderful gifts as well as looking good in your own home.

Khun Lek the owner says as with her old company Java Teak on Koh Samui clients are already asking her for custom designed furniture. On Koh Samui this became a large part of the business and the results were quite spectacular and the customers expectation always surpassed. . Sometimes this was a customer changing ome furniture item that they saw in the showroom, adapting the style or dimensions to suit their home, but often a customer brought in a sketch or a picture of what they were looking for. . The process is fairly simple, a quotation for the furniture is made and very detailed architect drawings are made to ensure that the furniture is the right design.. On a complicated piece during the production process pictures are sent over to Thailand so that progress can be monitored. Our supplier is quality controlled orientated and they actually enjoy working on

new styles, some of which they adopt and ends up in the suppliers own catalogue Lek’s house on Koh Samui has two old Javanese doors, customers loved them so much they have been copied on numerous occasions and adorn many of the finer houses on Koh Samui . The renowned Buriraya Hotel has a door to the entrance to their boutique shop and one was even sent to Vienna, an Austrian couple wanted one to use as the doorway to their walk in wardrobe. The size had to be exact, it was. Lek says if anyone is interested in making furniture to their own design come on in, it’s fun.

Black Mountain starts the year off in style

fter rounding off 2010 by hosting the Asian Tour’s season finale event, the “Black Mountain Masters”, and being voted as “Best Host Venue” by the pro players, the local golfing icon welcomed in the new-year with all guns blazing when it brought in the big names from Europe and Asia’s golfing ranks for the Royal Trophy Golf Championship this January. Players from a variety of nations in both continents arrived in Hua Hin in the early days of the new year in preparation for what is now a passionately fought out match play competition. Early honours were split with the scores tied after Fridays play, however things quickly swung in favour of the Asian Team after a very dominant Four Ball effort on the Saturday. With his usual large following, Thai golf hero, Thongchai Jaidee, turned the tables on his first days performance with an emphatic win with his playing partner Yuta Ikeda in their Four-ball game against the Swedish pair of Peter Hanson and Fredrik Andersson Hed The large crowds were treated to a special days play by the Asian Team who took the 2nd days lead with 6 points to 2, holding off a strong European Team effort to keep them to no points for the day, a first for the event. The scene was set for the final day, with Asia possibly thinking that they had the competition in the bag with only 2.5 points needed to take out the whole competition. In the singles on the Sunday, all started well for Asia with China’s Liang Wen-chong birdying the first few holes to take a 2-up lead and an easy win was on the cards. However, things quickly changed when his opposition, Sweden’s Hanson hit back by winning five on the trot. He finished off Liang in brilliant fashion by chipping in from forty feet for a birdie at the 12th and a 7&6 victory to close the gap to 6-3 points. Welshman Rhys Davies kept the momentum going for

the Europeans by picking up the second point with a comprehensive 4 and 2 victory over Japanese teenage sensation Ryo Ishikawa, and Fredrik Andersson Hed of Sweden further raised Europe’s hopes by downing Japan’s Yuta Ikeda 2 and 1. Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, who holed the winning putt for Europe in 2006 and 2010, produced more heroics with a birdie at the final hole to square his match with Asian Tour number one Noh Seung-yul and pick up a crucial half point. The 19-year-old Noh was never behind against Stenson but failed to close the door on the vastly experienced world number 53, who drew Europe within a point of Asia. “It was important to get a half point - if I had not things could have turned the other way,” said Stenson. Captain Montgomerie leveled the scores 6.5-6.5 with a 3 and 1 triumph over Japan Tour number one Kim Kyung-tae of Korea, the highest ranked player in the field. The 47-year-old Scotsman bounced back from a heavy defeat in the four-balls on Saturday, keeping alive his astonishing record of never having lost a singles in eight Ryder Cup and two Royal Trophy matches, to put Europe within touching distance of a famous victory. Italy’s Matteo Manassero, wounded by two defeats to Ishikawa in foursomes and four-balls, restored his reputation by beating Japan’s Shunsuke Sonoda one up, to put Europe a point ahead and set up a dramatic climax. With 2 groups to go, the scores very close, and Thongchai Jaidee and Johan Edfors anchoring the teams battling it out in a close game, Spain’s Pablo Martin was also fighting an epic battle with India’s Jeev Milkha Singh. Having finally drawing level at the 18th, Singh managed to chip to the green to about 12 feet from the hole for a chance to make a handy Par to give Jaidee a chance at an Asian Victory.

After Martin hit his second shot behind the large Marque, leaving him with a very difficult chip over a bunker and not much room to stop the ball on the green, Asian hopes were on a high, however, they were soon dashed when he hit an amazing shot to only 12 inches and his putt sealed a dramatic 9-7 victory. “To come back from 6-2 behind and not to lose a match today against the strongest Asian team we have seen in this event was a fantastic performance, and all credit to the players,” said a delighted captain Colin Montgomerie. “It was one of the most remarkable days that I have been part of, and I have been part of a number of remarkable days for European golf. Today probably beat the lot,” he said. Asia captain Naomichi “Joe” Ozaki said that the loss reflected the fickle nature of matchplay. “I did not think it was going to be easy to win today -- I expected the European team would come back at us and try hard,” he said. “It just shows the difficulty of matchplay golf. Black Mountain Golf Club General Manager, Mr Harald Elisson said “what an amazing finish. I honestly thought that Pablo would find it diffucult to get the ball close to the hole but he hit one of the best shots we’ve seen here at Black Mountain”. “It’s been a fantastic event. The crowds have been great and we really feel that it’s going to help promote golf in Asia and the area of Hua Hin as Thailand’s best golfing destination” he said. “The players have all enjoyed their time here at Black Mountain with many of them staying on to utilize the great facilities in preparation for their next tournaments. Some will just take a much deserved break and relax as well. Either way, we enjoy having the stars here”, he concluded.

Diethelm Travel brings world’s biggest corporate golf tournament to Asia Thailand chosen to host launch tournament

The world’s biggest corporate golf tournament has arrived in Asia. The launch of the World Corporate Golf Challenge Asia series will take place in Thailand on 17th March 2011. Part of an international network of amateur corporate golf tournaments, Diethelm Travel have secured the rights to the World Corporate Golf Challenge Asia (WCGC Asia) from global rights holder, Madrid-based OM Premium. Speaking at the signing, David Pettigrew, Director of Golf, Diethelm Travel, said “We’re very excited about launching the World Corporate Golf Challenge Asia. It’s a unique concept where corporate two-player teams compete against other amateur corporate teams, with the winning team of each national final going on an all-expenses-paidtrip to the World Finals where they have a chance to become World Champions.” Diethelm Travel have chosen Thailand to be the first World Corporate Golf Challenge Asia event. The 2010/2011 Thailand Finals will take place on 17th March at the only Greg Norman course in Thailand, the Thana City Golf & Sports Club, just outside Bangkok. The event provides a playing environment where competitors will feel like they are playing in a PGA tournament, whilst at the same time having fun with plenty of opportunity for networking. Upto 72 teams (144

participants) will take part in the Thailand Finals. All World Corporate Golf Challenge events are amateur handicap golf tournaments where two players are eligible to represent the entrant. The Thailand Finals are open to any company or organisation based in Thailand. The Finals consist of an 18 hole stableford competition.\ The programme for the Thailand Finals starts with

registration at Thana City Golf & Sports Club followed by breakfast. Tee-off time is at 10am. Refreshment and snacks are provided on the course, with drinks served at the Clubhouse upon completion, followed by a late afternoon buffet dinner and prize presentations. The overall winners of the Thailand Finals will go on an all-expenses-paid-trip to the World Finals which will be held 3 – 8 May 2011 at Simola in South Africa, where they will represent not only their company but also their country. An annual event, the World Corporate Golf Challenge attracts over 60,000 executives playing in 15,000 teams from more than 25 countries. Since it started in 1993, more than one million golfers have competed in the World Corporate Golf Challenge for the chance to represent their country. Diethelm Travel will launch a number of Asian events as part of the World Corporate Golf Challenge for the 2011/2012 series and will expand further into new markets in 2012/2013, having secured licences for events in the following countries: Cambodia; China; Hong Kong; Indonesia; Japan; Laos; North Korea; South Korea; Singapore; Sri Lanka; Taiwan; Philippines; Thailand and Vietnam. Wealth Management & Offshore Planning of Home Ownership Specialists In Thailand - Part IV

Taxes & Fees on House Transfers

Legal Problems

L

By James Finch and Nilobon Tangprasit of Chavalit, Finch & Partners, Ltd.

ast time we told you that if you buy a house and rent the land on which it sits, you should take title to the house separately from the land, and not have it included in the lease of the land. This time we will discuss another reason that your landlord may have put the house on the lease, and what to do about it. The second reason the landlord may object to letting you take outright ownership of the house is the taxes and government fees, since the landlord, as seller, may have agreed to pay all or a part of these. Home purchase deals in Thailand may, for example, often provide that the seller or landlord agrees to pay half the taxes and fees. Of course, real estate taxes and fees have to be paid on a house transfer, and the seller may have wanted to avoid these. Here’s how the taxes and fees work. The registration fee on a lease is 1.1 percent of the value of the rent for the entire period of the lease. One option is to include the value of the house for the entire long lease period in the lease and pay 1.1 percent of this as the fee. Alternatively, since you as a foreigner buying from an individual may own the house in your own name, you may pay the taxes and fees on the sale, not the lease, of the house and register it directly in your name. The taxes and fees on the transfer

of a house in this manner would be the following: - a registration fee of 2 % of the assessed price plus - a specific business tax of 3.3% of the sale price and assessed price, whichever is higher or, in case the Seller has owned the house over 5 years, a small stamp duty plus the income tax to the seller on the sale. What should you do if the house is on the lease? Ask the landlord to amend the lease so that it only includes the land and to convey the house separately to you. You may have to cover the taxes and fees on this, but this won’t be much to put out in exchange for much better rights to what you’ve bought. If you own the house outright, for example, you may convey it to others without worrying about getting the approval of the landlord. And you can be much more sure that if you die it will go to your heirs. * Chavalit Finch & Partners, Ltd. are lawyers specializing in real estate and business transactions. Stefan Edberg: Still Courting Success

I

t may be nigh on 20 years since Sweden’s Stefan Edberg was in his heyday, but his name still demands enormous respect in the world of tennis. Therefore it was a great honour for all of us at Dusit Thani Hua Hin when Stefan and his lovely wife Annette selected our resort to celebrate their New Year in style together with their two teenage children, Emilie and Christopher.

Awards and also kindly agreed to give up his time to conduct a tennis clinic for local Thai children together with Thailand’s current number 1 ladies player and former world top-twenty star, Tamarine Tanasugarn, better known simple and affectionately as Tammy. It was a great day thoroughly enjoyed by all who were able to see the Swedish legend

Stefan Edberg was a world top-ten ranked play for 493 weeks from 1985 to 1995 and won six majors during his glittering career, with two titles at both the Australian Open and US Open, while perhaps the highlight of his career was a hat-trick of singles finals at Wimbledon against Boris Becker, including the title in both 1988 and 1990. Other accolades that Stefan notched up include four Davis Cups and three Grand Slam Doubles titles. Alongside John McEnroe, he is counted as one of only two players to have also been ranked number one in both singles and doubles. Rather than slide down the slippery slope to an also ran, Stefan elected to retire in 1997, while his powers were still relatively near their peak, having been ranked 14th in the world at the end of 1996 and he was subsequently elected to the prestigious International Tennis Hall of Fame in July 2004. During his week-long stay Stefan The 2011 Season promises to be very tight as considerable improvements, engine demonstrated the humility that saw him (Lotus) and driver changes will improve performances. become five-times ATP Sportsmanship

show off some of his still-impressive skills and pass on never-to-be forgotten advice to budding Thai tennis stars of the future. Dusit Thani has established a fine reputation in Thailand for its support of tennis and for 20 years Dusit Thani Pattaya has hosted what is now known at the PTT Pattaya Open, the Asian leg of the Ladies WTA tour, with this year’s event scheduled for 6th – 13th Febuary with such household names as Vera Zvonerava, Ana Ivanovic, Daniella Hantuchova, Maria Kirilenko and Thailand’s Tammy slated to top the bill. Don’t forget that you can walk the same courts that were so recently graced by Stefan Edberg and Tamarine Tanasugarn here at Dusit Thani Hua Hin. Our courts are open daily from 7.00A.M. – 9.00P.M. with no charge made until 6.00P.M. and a small Baht150 cover charge made after that. What we say about others is a perfect description of ourselves

H

ere in Thailand where the belief of ‘gum’ or karma or the belief that every action has an equal reaction, or more simply put; what you give, is what you get, is what the Thai people live by. A great philosophy, because everything you think and do will bring about an equal reaction and affect yours and others lives, either positively or negatively. Maybe that’s why the ‘face’ thing is so woven into the Asian culture, understanding face one can succeed in negotiations and avoid conflict with all egos and relationships intact. We know that seeing others positively reveals our own positive traits, and what we say about others really does say a lot about ourselves. The judgements we make about other’s faults, we will usually find within ourselves. If

by Jilly

those faults were not within us, we would not recognise them in others. The simple tendency to see people negatively indicates a greater likelihood of depression and various personality disorders. My kids always said that when you point a finger at other people, there are always four fingers pointing back at you so the words you use, will come back on you, so make them worth receiving!!! Watching the floods in Australia and the people’s reaction was truly amazing because each person interviewed, stressed that the way people were pulling together and helping each other, during the time of great disaster, was just amazing. Nobody mentioned that strangers had also been helping themselves

Goodbye Hua Hin

H

ello my beloveds out there – well my beautiful time in the little seaside village of Hua Hin has come to an end as have the savings and thus I am moving back to a town just outside Bangkok called Pratum Thani and taking up residence at the beautiful temple where I will be instructing the monks in the use of English and setting up international Vipassana programmes and hopefully replenishing my now empty coffers – yes and will be study with the Dhammakaya Open University – a BA in Buddhism which will no doubt lead to other good things

The community living at Wat Phra Dhammakaya now numbers 3,000 monks, novices, laymen and laywomen - making it the largest temple in Thailand in terms of inhabitants. Congregations on Sundays and major religious festivals reach 100,000, which since 1985 exceeded temple capacity and influenced the temple’s decision to expand the site to one thousand acres (4 km²) with the building of the World Dhammakaya Centre project. Leaving my little cottage at the sea is not easy but got to move on I guess and really have to start travelling again – have become far to settled - Japan , I believe is my first test of creating a mediation programme, so that is something to look forward to as I have never been there - and I loved my job here as a roving reporter for the local newspaper but just did not pay enough- so onwards we go

to the possessions of those unfortunates not there to protect their goods. However, the general feeling was that the Australian people really were a strong, caring community and the impression it left of that nation was truly positive. Again within the Thai Buddhist belief; the Buddha said, do no harm to any living creature – also something the Thai people are supposed to live by and yet the amount of diseased, desperately ill and maltreated animals around Hua Hin is just appalling. You can really understand what a nation is, by the way they treat the animals in their domain. – Why is it that such seemingly caring people are so cruel and able to turn a blind eye to the horrifying state of the suffering dogs around the town??

It really spoils the experience for many tourists that come to Thailand and oh yes – what about eating animals???? Ah no, proclaim those in the know, if we ourselves do not kill the pig to eat it, we are not guilty of doing anything wrong!!! Does that mean in the case of a hired gunman, that only the gunman is guilty??? I have lived here a long time but still find it difficult to understand the group consciousness or the way things are thought out or not thought out here in Thailand. I suppose generally all things have two sides – good and evil, kind and cruel, and it’s a matter of how one manages all the stuff around us on a day to day basis while trying to attain some sort of enlightenment that counts!!!

MORE QUESTIONS THAT HAUNT US

Why do you have to “put your two cents in” ... But it’s only a “penny for your thoughts”? Where’s that extra penny going to? Once you’re in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity? Why does a round pizza come in a square box? What disease did cured ham actually have? And can it have a relapse on my plate? How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage? Why is it that people say they “slept like a baby” when babies wake up like every two hours? If a deaf person has to go to court, is it still called a hearing? Why are you in a movie, but you’re on tv? Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground? Why do doctors leave the room while you change? They’re going to see you naked anyway. Why is “bra” singular and “panties” plural? Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat? If jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a stupid song about him? Can a hearse carrying a corpse drive in the carpool lane? If the professor on gilligan’s island can make a radio out of a coconut, why can’t he fix a hole in a boat? Why does goofy stand erect while pluto remains on all fours? They’re both dogs!

Health Alternative in Hua Hin How To Stay Sukkasart Instutute of Healing Arts

Healthy In 2011 By GMoss H

ealth is a very important factor in our lives. It is closely related to wellbeing, happiness, mobility and survival. In our modern world, we go through health checks, our blood is monitored, we are put on diets, we work out and our cardio-system is closely watched. Yet very often we abuse of our health and are abused off as well. Through healthy food, moderate alcohol intake and avoiding smoking we can reach a relative happy and healthy seniority. However, by unsaggurated fats intake, fried foods and combinations of protein and carbohydrates, abuse of alcohol and nicotine, our live can be shortened considerably. Emissions, polluted cities and contaminated water and dirty food will help shorten it even more. Thailand possesses a fine selection of modern hospitals with state of the art equipment to recover us should anything go wrong. I have tried to shed some light on two alternative healing. One being medicine treatment as we know it when we visit a physician and the other being alternative healing methods including alternative, natural herbal medicine, yoga and other healing practices. As partners we chose the newly opened Bangkok Hospital, represented by Dr. Michael Moreton and the Health Alternative – Sukkasart Institute of Healing Arts. There is no competition as both offer alternative services whereas a clinic is irreplaceable when it comes to emergency, life saving treatments and therapies. Healing Arts include sound and light therapies, massages, yoga exercises’ and herbal treatments. All for the best of us and each one an attribute towards long, healthy life.

As today´s modern lifestyle stress seems to be considered as a major influence to overall health and has major effects in our well-being. Most of discomfort and pain such as neck and shoulder tension, lower back pain, stiff fingers, cold hands and feet including poor digestive problem of constipation, gastric reflux and sleeping disorder have become common dis-ease to our living. Once the stress takes over your body, it has major effects on muscle tension that could result in poor circulation and poor nerve impulse. People may respond to these problems as weakness and try to overcome these conditions with hyperactive movement. Stress has been seen as a factor that affects body, mind and emotional well-being. Once the body stresses it loses their natural resource of energy thus result of poor motivation and could be shown as poor posture. In general if we all have energy to cope with difficult situations we can foresee this task as challenges to overcome, however once the body is weak and it will be unable to overcome the situation, stress will start approaching your body, mind and emotion condition. General relaxation techniques could be used to prevent you from accumulating too much stress, positive thinking is a better tool to deal with the situation, and mind training also helps everyone sustain the mind to rest and not be over active. At Sukkasart, integration of body and mind is the key to nurture

empted as always to indulge in some serious curry, what is more apparent than crawling along Hua Hin famous Klong Channel until I reach the Pinky bridge , on the bridge turn right and left and here is this little Irresistible curry destination Krua Araya! Krua offers 12 different curries, geographically evenly spread from different areas of Thailand. Being a Kao Soi fetishist, I ordered two portions to make sure I have my share before they run out. Mind you, Mama as I fondly call the first Lady, cooks all the food , makes fresh sauces every day…so , bravely , after finishing my Kao Soi I tried some of the others including a Krua Bolognese Sauce(Thai Northern style)with Spaghettis, spicy and all and a green curry with vegetables. All delicious and very affordable. As a matter of fact 4 of you could go there and eat until you can´t walk anymore and still have spend about as much as you would alone downtown. There is a Thai salad bar, a sweets corner and plenty of herbal tea from Lemon Grass to Chrysanthemum. Other soft drinks available. Get there early for lunch as the place filled after I showed up with 6 guests who will all come again and spread the word. Krua Araya is for Thai curries! All the way! Resort facilities include Lemongrass Restaurant & Bar and the Splash Pool Bar & Playground. Just moments from one of the region’s most impressive golf courses and a short drive from the heart of Thailand’s royal resort town, Banyan Resort & Golf, Hua Hin, Thailand offers guests an enviable lifestyle and is the ideal choice for relaxation with the family and memorable golf holiday. Hua Hin Today was invited to join a tasting of the famous Fondue Bourguigneonne at the Lemongrrass Restaurant. Let´s explain : Fondue is a Swiss and French dish of melted cheese served in a communal pot over a small burner (rechaud), and eaten by dipping long-stemmed forks with bread into the cheese. It was promoted as a Swiss national dish by the Swiss Cheese Union in the 1930’s and became popular in North America in the 1960’s. Since the 1950s, the name “fondue” has been generalized to a variety of other dishes where a food is dipped into a hot liquid, including chocolate fondue, where pieces of fruit are dipped into a melted chocolate mixture, and fondue bourguignonne, where pieces of meat are cooked in hot oil. Fondue Bourguignonne consists of a fondue pot filled with hot oil into which diners dip pieces of meat to cook them. Various sauces are provided on the side. The dish is first attested in the mid-1950s and apparently originated centuries ago in Burgundy’s famous vineyards. When the grapes were ripe, harvesting became a priority, often without time for a noon meal. According to fondue history, a monk by the name of Johann du Putzxe, had the idea of heating oil to dunk and cook pieces of meat he had taken from the Abbot’s private supplies - to help him eat it on the run! The Swiss then took this idea and developed it to its present day form. They give credit to the Burgundian grape pickers by calling Beside serving dipping sauces with the fondue, you might want to add a crisp green salad, some fresh sour dough bread and a dry, red wine. And Oh boy! What a great meal and fun to eat at the same time. We were served a salad with the meal and French fries on request. The fondue set contains a gas burner with and soon our oil was up to temperature. Some potatoes slices floated in the oil preventing it from spattering out of the pan. You take your fork or the designated forchettine to pick up the meat and dip in the hot oil until it finished cooking to your taste. I liked the rare to medium grade and enjoyed covering it with one of the sauces served with the dish. A choice of : Sour Cream Mustard - Béarnaise Sauce - Hollandaise Sauce – Sauce Andalouse and Sauce Tartar made a gourmand out of me. The sauces were delicious. The Lemongrass Restaurant has the perfect setting for a meal like this as you sit outside enjoying the nice sea breeze of colder air in January. A nice bottle of vintage red wine rounded off the sumptuous delight. Will I come back for some more! Definitely but also to explore the rest of the menue, composed and created by Chef Nokyung Singkarawong There are regular Buffets and daily promotions over lunch and dinner. Sukkasart Institute of Healing Arts

by GMoss

A

s I approached the Sukkasart Institute I had no clue what to expect as my earlier call did not reveal a Spa or any treatments my face and skeleton so desperately need and deserve. I was greeted by the owner Khun Buathon. As I entered and I am deliberately extending this opening section , Khun Buathon told me I was low on energy and asked me what was bugging me. She saw it in my face , aura , clouds , whatever. She was right however. Daily life , no holidays , bad pay, barking dogs, fuel prices, they all influence us men. “You need to forgive” was next. Who do I need to forgive ? Oh yes, there was this thing or two in my life that seems to float up once in a while. Yeah , I will need to forgive, however why does that influence my energy? Well, Khun Buathon compared me with a computer hard disk that is going to it´s limited capacity , need to defragment , clean and delete files, if not yout boot- up is slow, you react sluggish and forget a lot as fragments are not saved. Good comparison. Sukkasart Institute is situated right before the airport runway tunnel on the left side as you go towards BKK. There are three stories in the building. Reception – Treatment and Meditation and Meditation , Yoga , creative Dancing classes. There are several holistic treatment categories and Arts, to name view : • ZenNaTai An ancient therapeutic medical massage treatment working through the abdominal area - the center of chi or energy flow in the body, and chest area for improving digestion and breathing qualities, including head and scalp to release cranial tension and improving concentration, this treatment stimulates the lymphatic flow, helping to detoxify the body getting rid of toxins and negativity, brings comfort and relief to the abdomen, induce the deeper state of relaxation and peaceful mind. • Reiki - Experience the connecting vibration energy that moves within and around you. This treatment will help analyze any deficiencies and balance the body’s energy field to promote a sense of vitality. This is a very empowering treatment and may help in many areas of your life.

• Sound Healing - Experience the vibration of sound, with singing bowl that guide you to deeper state of relaxation and allowing this sound frequency to vibrate the body subtle energy to be energize and align as its own body pace, you will be guided to opening your heart and expand your own loving and kindness vibration to your own harmony. • Private Yoga Class - A basic class consisting of 18 postures or Asanas. The postures are based in the style of Hatha Yoga which is the most common practice nowadays. Meditation and Breathing exercises and techniques (Pranayama) are introduced in this class. • Private Meditation Coaching - Embarking this journey of awakening by connecting to your own busy mind and learning to utilize various tools to fulfill your meditation experience, and let the mind to be calm and serene. As Khun Buathon diagnosed me with energy deficiency she selected the sound healing with a ZenNa Tai treatment. The sound therapy was very intense and relaxing as the singing bowl transmitted the sound waved to my brain and other parts across my body. The cranial and neck massage is nothing compared to downtown massages. Immediately I could sense that here there was a professional at work. It all starts at the head , neck and is carried through the body crosswise. If your little toe acts funny, look for the cause in your neck! My relaxed Spa review soon became a hard working but extremely rewarding session. The abdominal treatment felt like a battle between my intestines and Khun Buathon´s hands. Do I remember that I have a liver , kidneys and a few meters of intestines ! However , again , I felt absolutely relaxed afterwards. It felt as if someone fed me with jet fuel. I could move easier , my vision was more aware. Fresh and ready for anything to cross my path. Rose tea kept my heart cool as insiders would say. It quenched my thirst.

Summary of the treatments is that if you confide in the Therapist, in my case Khun Buathon, it is easier for her to detect weak points but there is no hiding to these knowledgeable, professional limbs that feel every deficiency, lump, swollen or deteriorated muscle pack. Khun Buathon restored partly the energy flow in my body working on the meridians and allowing for freed energy to restore my flexibility and in the end my health and happiness. Sukkasart has found a true supporter for the treatments , for the Art of alternative healing and a different spa. People with movement problems , Artheritis, troubled motoric and numerous other physical problems can consult Sukkasart for a possible therapy. It is worth all your while. Believe me! or the first time, Patravadi Theatre’s Fringe Festival will cover not only one city but two! Fringe Festival 2011 will take place in Bangkok and Hua Hin from 29 January to 17 March, at both Patravadi Theatre and Vic Hua Hin. Organized by Patravadi Theatre and Vic Hua Hin, and supported by the Office of Contemporary Arts and Culture, Ministry of Culture of Thailand, this year’s Fringe Festival does not boast to be big, but small and beautiful. Creative events of performances and films are invited from both overseas and Thailand to join this annual platform of creative artistry. The festival will begin with American physical comedienne Hilary Chaplain’s solo performance “A LIFE IN HER DAY”. An original amalgam of Lucille Ball and Charlie Chaplin, Hilary Chaplain, with the aid of objects and puppets, reveals the intimate moments of a Jewish woman chasing he dream of happy ever after. Hilary’s performance will be opened with puppeteer Rima Miller’s short performance “INTRODUCTIONS”. The festival’s biggest sensation, “FAUST – Told in the Best Songs of Rock and Pop” is from Switzerland. Renowned Swiss actor Daniel Rohr blends over 40 all-time rock and pop favourites from Louis Armstrong, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Doors, to Michael Jackson and Madonna to retell Goethe’s everlasting love story of Faust. The result is a perfect concert-and-theatre combo that delivers vibrant live music, humorous acting and theatrical inspirations that communicate beyond languages. While the audience will not have difficulty following journey of the songs, the production will take care of those who have concern with language by providing Thai and English subtitles for both its original German version and English version. “FAUST” is supported by Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, Suisse Theatre, Goethe-Institut Thailand, the Embassy of Switzerland and Swiss School Bangkok. Fringe Festival has long since pioneered collaboration between Thai and international artists. This year, Thailand’s most stimulating physical theatre troupe B-Floor will pair up with Fringe’s favourite Japanese group Wangnin Bunmei to create a new performance “wanto – SPACE O DIZZY”. Wangnin Bunmei is known for its creative staging of music, idiosyncratic butoh style and its zest in engaging the audience. With B Floor’s taste for open and creative collaboration and it’s touch on social awareness, the two groups will present the uniqueness of spaces in cities in their most original imagery weaved by live music, dance and physical theatre. This collaboration is supported by Japan Foundation Bangkok. Another cross-cultural collaboration is “BOW PROJECT 2011”. The Bow project is a group of dance, music and dance film artists from Europe and Asia who first met in China and continue to collaborate ever since. In 2010 they presented “FINAL BOW”, an evening ofdance film, live music and dance at Patravadi Theatre. They will revisit with new works and new collaboration at the Festival. From Israel Fringe Festival will host the talented Yael Rasooly’s “PAPER CUT!”. An award-wining solo performance of paper and object theatre, “PAPER CUT!” is as imaginative as it is deadly hilarious. Yael Rasooly transforms herself into a lonely secretary; playing with cut-outs from old black and white magazines to escape into a world of glamour and romance, falling into a rendezvous that turns out to be a Hitchcock nightmare! The performance is supported by the Embassy of Israel.

A co-presentation with La Fete, “FANG LAO” by Olé Khamchanla from Cie. A’corps, is a uniqe and sensitive hip hop dance brings together dancers narrating their stories and experiences through hip hop, fone lao (traditional Lao dance) and khon (Thai masked dance). “FANG LAO” is supported by Culture France. Large Tourist Crowds in Cha-Am for New Year

By Sorravit

rdes of tourists and Cha-Am locals celebrated the New Year’s Eve at midnight of 31 December along the beaches and at the Cha-Am lookout where festive activities and music performances were organized. The recent New Year Celebration, held annually by the Cha-Am Municipality, took place between 31 December 2010 and 2 January 2011.

Although the Cha-Am countdown was organized for the first time this year, a lot of visitors came to the city to enjoy fun-loaded parties and admire beautiful fireworks. Those who celebrated the New Year at the Cha-Am lookout could savor delicious cuisines and enjoy lucky draws held by the Cha-Am Municipality.

According to the Cha-Am Mayor Mr. Nukul Pornsomboonsiri, the New Year Celebration in Cha-Am usually consists of a Buddhist ceremony of alms offering to monks in the early morning of 1 January at the ChaAm Municipality. This year, however, there is a countdown night at midnight of 31 December 2010 until 1 January 2011 at the Cha-Am lookout. The Buddhist ceremony is still held in the dawn of the New Year. To welcome all tourists who crowd the city every year, the New Year Celebration is lengthened for 2 nights: from 1 to 2 January 2011.

“The New Year Celebration is one of festive activities to promote tourism in Cha-Am. It is much favored by visitors and the locals alike, so the Municipality will organize it every year,” concluded the Cha-Am Mayor.

Chicky Net re-launch going International

J

anuary 2011 - November 2010 witnessed the brand new and much anticipated re-launch of Chicky Net. The site was first established in Phuket in April 2009, however as word got out that there was finally a resource for women to connect, have fun, and make new friends the site grew and expanded with networks for women in major cities throughout Thailand. Currently the network has over 1300 members, 600 events and more than 1200 active forum topics. As the site became more and more popular with new women joining every single day, there was a need for the site to grow to accommodate all needs and the masses of women joining. The Phuket site alone started around 1.5 years ago, and now has over 800 members, most of which many women in Thailand had no idea existed. This is one of the main reasons the site was formed – to show women they are not alone, and there are many women sharing similar interests, questions and simply looking to make new friends in a bid to finally feel at home in Thailand. Besides from members being able to browse in groups such as; Yummy Mummies and Sporty Chicks; start new topics in the forum whether they are looking for a new hairdresser; require visa advice; or want to know the best places to eat – Chicky Net is also renowned for

its highly successful events. For instance, one of the first events was a ‘Meet and Greet’ session held in Phuket, at the time there were 40 women who were members and an impressive 26 turned up for the very first event proving just how much women needed the site. As time has gone by, and the popularity of the site has increased so much that events are becoming more and more regular, the Chiang Mai network held its very first meet and greet event at a fun Mexican restaurant, which saw 46 women attend. The success behind the events is that ladies are encouraged to organize their own events on the site, there are book club meets, events where ladies walk their dogs together, go for weekly lunches by the sea and so much more. One of the newest additions to the Chicky Net empire is the Hua Hin network, which already has 90 members after a mere 4 months. News of Chicky Net now being available in Hua Hin is spreading extremely fast, and many women are already creating friendships with other women they never knew existed. Berthe Mandaat is the founder of Chicky Net and she commented, “Members I speak to always thought that there were hardly any women here in Thailand, the surprise they show when discovering that we are here in big numbers always brings a big smile to my face.
