EDITORIAL FOREWORD

re we putting 2010 behind us without giving a thought how it was? Well, it was what we made of it. We blame politicians but elect them. We are quick to point a finger but take no criticism. Not much has changed. I took an Air Berlin plane to Europe a little while back on a short visit before Xmas. Took a one way ticket through the Internet as I surfed for the lowest fares. With no return ticket I was declared insane by those who call themselves friends. It was bloody cold and when I decided to fly back there were plenty of seats available at low prices. A day later, airports were closed. Chaos of people battling for seats, flights and hotel rooms. Apparently they even got into fights. I was so glad to be back in Thailand. Motorbikes going against the traffic flow was what I am used to. Dogs on the highway, overloaded trucks and kamikaze mini busses brightened up my day as I travelled back from Suvarnabuhmi. In Germany , flashing Mercs who think that they bought the left track on a freeway when they purchased their car, swearing their way through traffic, honking, cutting, followed by BMW´s and Audis, in that order. Pushy Mercs actually never bothered me as I drove a very fast car that kept ahead of the others. In the stores I found unfriendly people, no feeling for service and extremely high food and drinks prices. A Croissant with Ham and Cheese with a Coffee at € 6,99 ( B 280 ) buys you a starter , pizza and a glass of red wine at an Italian Restaurant in Hua Hin.

Positive is that all is so well organized. The garbage is collected on time, Internet speed is what they advertise and sell, in big cities, red light only last half a minute instead of 3-5 min. in BKK. Enough Europe blues. Snow is nice for a few days. Welcome back to the sun. Our Chivasom colleagues are again marching on with Keeping Hua Hin Clean. The municipality, or rather an oil factory entrepreneur has distributed garbage bags to all the hotels in their Honourable Endeavour to be filled with empty plastic bottles and send to the plastic recycling plant on Soi 112 to be turned into crude light oil. The oils is than sold to refineries in BKK at 18 Baht a litre. The daily production of crude oil is about 4000 litres. Can you calculate? Who gets the revenue? Practically, it would be a lot more effective to place garbage containers in the less privileged areas to avoid the Klong and side roads being used as a garbage container. Side roads or pothole paths, they also need to be mended, up kept. In the opinion of reader comments, developers should be responsible for a certain section of road that stretches in front of their development. Good idea. Hopefully, this and keeping Hua Hin clean will be followed up. A while back Mr. Scott Stuart, assistant of ex Vice President Al Gore of the USA made an appearance in Hua Hin and worried us about the Earth warming and mounting natural catastrophes caused by carbon emissions. Are we doing anything against it or

We offer at least 10 different kinds of curries from North to South with rice noodles, yellow noodles or spaghetti. Famous Kao Soi from Chiang Mai and other goodies are served at Thai local prices. We also have a fresh vegetable buffet and Thai dessert specialties as well as herbal teas and other fresh drinks. Our new menu includes Spaghetti with green curry, Spaghetti with Kao Soi Soup and Spaghetti with Northern Style Tomato Sauce.

is the industry lobby just too powerful. Again, the USA, largest emissions sinner is against global regulation but they get away with it. Japanese keep killing whales and dolphins to satisfy their perverted food needs. Chinese keep wanting tiger testicles and brown bears are still “milked” for their liver juices which are supposed to make man more macho. Greenpeace keeps protesting in icy cold waters but their cold endeavors just hit deaf ears or cold wet suits. I could go on and on but would probably get into trouble if I criticized governments for not protecting children and taking no action against child porno and child abuse. Wish y´all a Merry Xmas, Happy New Year, Good Luck, Love and Prosperity and keep cool. Editor

Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin

he opening of a new hospital is always a remarkable event. The Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin (BHN) that opened its doors on November 1st is the latest addition to the hospitals owned and operated by the Bangkok Dusit Medical Services, the parent organization for all the ‘Bangkok Hospitals’. In addition to its flagship hospital in Bangkok BDMS governs twenty hospitals including ones in the all the main resort areas of Thailand, Phuket, Pattaya and Ko Sumui. Hua Hin was a big gap in this network of hospitals; now that gap has been filled.

The first phase of the hospital, the Emergency Department, opened on November 1st and is busier than we anticipated. The next phase of the hospital to open will be the Out Patient Department (OPD). The construction and installation of equipment is going very well. Originally we thought that the clinics would open in April but we now are confident that they will open in early January. These clinics will be by appointment only.

Our new hospital being a member of this network of hospitals has the advantage that all the experience and expertise that the network has acquired can be used in planning, building and operating the new hospital. Many networks of hospitals expand by acquiring the ownership of other existing hospitals, but BDMS’s expansion has also included the building of several hospitals on empty land and is very experienced in how this should be done. Bangkok Hospital Pattaya and Bangkok Hospital Sumui are examples of this approach.

We will have clinics in General medicine, Children’s Clinic, Women’s Care Clinic, General Surgery and some surgical specialty areas such as Orthopedic Surgery, Urology and other specialty areas.

The construction of any building, a condominium complex, shopping center, school or hospital needs particular expertise in its design. Hospitals are incredibly complicated and there is a whole sub-section of Architects who specialize in this work. Time to Celebrate 20th Anniversary T

Dusit Thani Hua Hin Hotel

he Dusit Thani Hua Hin Hotel organized its grand 20th anniversary celebration on 15 December 2010 in Cha-Am, showcasing a big dinner banquet, pool revues and awesome fireworks.

Did you know this? “Stewardesses” is the longest word typed with only the left hand And “lollipop” is the longest word typed with your right hand. No word in the English language rhymes with month, orange, silver, or purple. “Dreamt” is the only English word that ends in the letters “mt”.

According to the Hotel’s General Manager Mr.Victor Sukseri, the Dusit Thani Hua Hin Hotel started working on 14 December 1990 with an investment of over 900 million Baht and more than 300 rooms of different types to suit every customer. At that time, its supervisor was Than Phuying Chanat Piya-ui.

Our eyes are always the same size from birth, but our nose and ears never stop growing. The sentence: “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” uses every letter of the alphabet.

Now, the hotel is 20 years old already with 400 qualified staff members. A public company with its shares at the Stock Exchange of Thailand, the Dusit Hua Hin Resort has accommodated many national events and conferences, including the previous ASEAN Summit. It also welcomed a lot of national leaders of Thailand, namely Mr. Chuan Leekpai, Mr. Banharn Silpa-acha, Mr. Anan Panyarachun, Maj. Gen. Chavalit Yongjaiyut and Dr. Thaksin Chinnawatra. Even Thai ministers, ASEAN leaders and royal families of Thailand and other countries stayed there when they visited Hua Hin or Cha-Am.

The words ‘racecar,’ ‘kayak’ , and ‘level’ are the same whether they are read left to right or right to left (palindromes). There are only four words in the English language which end in “dous”: tremendous, horrendous, stupendous, and hazardous There are two words in the English language that have all five vowels in order: “abstemious” and “facetious.” TYPEWRITER is the longest word that can be made using the letters only on one row of the keyboard.

“Both national leaders and guests like to stay here because of our sincere staff members and executives who are serviceminded by nature. Plus, we present Thainess in everything we give to the guests, such as services, food and beverage. To fulfill the wish of Than Phuying, we still foster traditional Thai identity and share it with our guests,” said Victor, adding that the Hotel’s business is not run only in Thailand but also in other countries like England, Germany, India, China and the Philippines.

A cat has 32 muscles in each ear. A goldfish has a memory span of three seconds. A “jiffy” is an actual unit of time for 1/100th of a second. A shark is the only fish that can blink with both eyes. A snail can sleep for three years. Almonds are a member of the peach family. An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain.

Having been working for the Hotel for 20 years, the General Manager, who said he already married his work, is a beloved executive for all of the staff as he often takes care of his team

Babies are born without kneecaps. They don’t appear until the child reaches 2 to 6 years of age. members. Moreover, he encourages his staff to participate in all activities arranged by the Hotel so that they can fully show their talent and potential to others. In so doing, all the staff of the Hotel feel that they are working as a family. That’s why working for the Hotel is the happiest job ever. Even though Victor is now 60 years old, he said he would continue to do his best for the Hotel, especially promoting Thai identity to compete with other foreign hotels. Finally, the General Manager wishes all guests at the Hotel a Happy New Year for 2011.

February 1865 is the only month in recorded history not to have a full moon. In the last 4,000 years, no new animals have been domesticated. If the population of China walked past you, 8 abreast, the line would never end because of the rate of reproduction. Leonardo Da Vinci invented the scissors. Peanuts are one of the ingredients of dynamite! Rubber bands last longer when refrigerated. The average person’s left hand does 56% of the typing. The cruise liner, QE 2 moves only six inches for each gallon of diesel that it burns. The microwave was invented after a researcher walked by a radar tube and a chocolate bar melted in his pocket. (Good thing he did that.)

The winter of 1932 was so cold that Niagara Falls froze completely solid. There are more chickens than people in the world. Winston Churchill was born in a ladies’ room during a dance. Women blink nearly twice as much as men. Bonus!! All the ants in Africa weigh more than ALL the Elephants!!

Now you know (a little) more than you did before!!

Panorama Pool Villas Grand Opening

gainst the backdrop of disheartening economic turmoil across the globe, comes some very refreshing financial news from our own backyard. An unprecedented agreement designed to restore consumer confidence amid these turbulent times was announced in Hua Hin a few years back between Para Development Company and Bangkok Bank Public Company Ltd. The agreement, the first of its kind in the Hua Hin property market, would secure the funding necessary for the construction of infrastructure, a clubhouse and perimeter walls for Para’s groundbreaking Panorama Pool Villas resort project.

Now, after completing the Panorama project in a high quality fashion with happy house owners, Panorama celebrated it´s grand opening with an appropriate open house party. The relationship with the Bangkok Bank, the superior building quality and professional supervision guaranteed a

top of the charts development seeking its equal among other developments. “Bangkok Bank has known and had a very successful business relationship with Udorn and his family for more than 20 years. And their business, such as hotels and various other retail outlets have flourished over those years. I would personally say that we have experienced ‘win-win’ situations over the years,” said Khun Suchart in his speech to guests and members of the press. “Time and time again Udorn has shown himself to be not only entrepreneurial and successful but has always conducted himself honourably with the Bank and customers alike. This high moral standing has earned him many like-minded friends and the respect of Bangkok Bank,” The Panorama development has stunning panoramic views of the mountains and the sea. Set on a slope of lush green vegetation and bordered by protected Forestry Park land and the Thai Royal Family, the villas are just minutes away from a superb golf course and natural beaches. ...more on page 29...

Black Mountain Masters Tournament in Hua Hin

Golf Masters tournament at the Black TheMountain Golf Club was a great success.

HUA HIN : Japan’s Tetsuji Hiratsuka broke Thai hearts when he beat local hope Namchoak Tantipokakul at the first playoff hole in a thrilling finale to the Black Mountain Masters yesterday. Namchoak is happy with his performance despite losing the play-off. It was a fine victory by Hiratsuka who had played top class golf throughout the tournament, although he showed signs of nervousness in the last round, missing some putts on his way to a 71. In the play-off at the 18th hole, 23-year-old Namchoak overshot the green and landed in the bunker. His bunker shot left him too much to do and Hiratsuka was able to clinch victory with a short par putt. On a dramatic day, Namchoak, who had begun the round seven strokes behind the leader, had played inspired golf, hitting a 65 to haul himself to the top of the leaderboard. Namchoak then had to suffer an agonising wait to see if his clubhouse lead of 14-under would hold up as Hiratsuka and South Korea’s Lee Sung both missed opportunities to finish it off in regulation. Hiratsuka, who has been very consistent all year, was overjoyed at topping the year off with a victory.

“It is amazing, unbelievable. I love the Asian Tour,” he said. He said his iron play was good but he found putting quite difficult.”It was hard to read the greens. There were no easy putts,” he said. He hopes this win will move him on to bigger things. “I will concentrate on my world ranking. I want to improve and get into the big events,” said the Japanese. ...more on page 16...

To further complicate the situation Ruby also suffers from eczema, which makes her skin very sensitive and prone to being itchy. Dust mites are the main culprit and although we oil her skin a number of times a day if she comes into contact with anything like carpet her skin becomes inflamed and she starts scratching it.

Mountain Masters Tournament in Hua Hin

espite losing the play-off, Namchoak was happy with his performance. “Yes, it was disappointing not to win. I was feeling slightly nervous and I couldn’t control my shots as much as I wanted,” he said. The Thai player had rallied really well as his third round score of 77 had appeared to have put him out of contention. One consolation for Namchoak was that his good showing enabled him to secure his Asian Tour card for next season. “That is a great Christmas and New Year present for me,” he said.Sharing third place were two Thais, Piya Swangarunporn (73) and Kiradech Aphibarnrat (66), along with Australia’s Scott Hend (65) and Lee (70). Piya, who began the day leading the field, said nerves got the better of him. “I was feeling very nervous on my first five holes but it was not too disappointing as I had played well all week,” he said. “This is my best finish on the Asian Tour. It has been a really great week for me and I gained a lot of experience. Maybe next time I wont be so nervous.” Unfortunately for Piya he just missed out on securing his Asian Tour card. Thongchai Jaidee finished in lone seventh place after a disappointing 71. The Thai star, who many were tipping to win the tournament, was looking in good shape after making the turn at threeunder, but he suffered a disastrous run on the back nine with a double-bogey at the difficult 11th and bogeys at 12 and 13. Two late birdies were not enough to challenge the leaders. Hua Hin hero Prayad Marksaeng, cheered on by supporters wearing Prayad is Back t-shirts, finished well with a 67, sharing eighth spot with three others including compatriot Thaworn Wiratchant. Last night the players enjoyed the annual Asian Tour awards dinner at the Hyatt Regency hotel

Strong vacancy rates in Bangkok condo market

The ThaiSwiss SME Ind. Centre invested in 8 to 10 Rai of land which could be used for a business area (ThaiSwiss Village) and some 30 Rai for residential purposes. On the 3d picture the residential development is shown.

Rama III-Riverside area is the location with the lowest occupancy rate. Thailand’s Agency for Real Estate Affairs (AREA) said in its latest survey that there’s no sign of oversupply in the Bangkok condominium market, with its modest 21 per cent vacancy rate. According to AREA president Dr. Sopon Pornchokchai, the company surveyed 103 condominiums completed within the past eight to 12 months in central Bangkok. Of the 40,027 units in total, 79 per cent, or 31,584, units were occupied. Of the occupied units, 73 per cent of 22,914 units were owner-occupants, while the rest ware tenants.

“The data we have doesn’t show any signs of oversupply at the moment. However, we have to keep an eye on unfinished units, which might affect a number of supply in the market,” he said. “If the new condo units keep coming up in a big amount, the oversupply could be really occurred in two years time.” As reported in AREA’s research, Ramkhamhaeng was the location with the highest occupancy rate at 91 per cent, followed by Ratchada-Lad Phrao (86 per cent), Phahon Yothin-Phaya Thai (83 per cent), Sukhumvit Soi 1-69 (80 per cent) and Sukhumvit Soi 71-103 (79 per cent). The lowest occupancy was in the Rama III-Riverside area at 30 per cent.

La Villa Restaurant

t was about 23 years ago in 1978 when Khun Marco and Khun Sai came to Hua Hin to open an Italian Restaurant. We may well say that they were the first Italian restaurant in Hua Hin. La Villa brought the Mediterranean Culture to Hua Hin. As you approach La Villa , you can scent the Italian smells coming from the Pizza oven and kitchen. La Villa is very busy, any time of the year. The reason being that they are the oldest , best known and quality wise most stable one. It is not always easy to get a table at La Villa. Especially on weekends, it is recommended to call and make a reservation in advance. The ambiance is very Italian and a recent renovation has taken another culture step towards a typical Italian Restaurant as you may find in Milano , Torino, Modena and Rome. The staff was very helpful and friendly in finding us a table . A moment later, it was already arranged.

The waitresses know exactly what to do ant the right moment. The menue leaves no wishes open and it is quite difficult to make the right choices as all is delizioso ! We relied on the recommendations of Marco. As we were seated , Tomato Bruschettas were served almost immediately to get out taste buds orientated and focused on Italian food. As starters we had a Mussel au Gratin and shrimp cocktail and a seafood cocktail basically made with fresh seafood and a three thousand island dressing accompanied by an Italian ( what else) fresh Italian wine Chatting along about the past and the discouraging flow of tourists this year , we moved on to an antipasto which consisted of several Pasta dishes. One of my mum´s favorites , Penne Quattro Formagio ( 4 Cheeses Penne) , Marco suggested Spaghetti Seafood and a Special Rigatoni al Granchio (crab sauce) finishing off with a

Papa John P

apa John is well known in and out of Hua Hin and the owner Bernd Grabow is Papa John. Formerly opposite the Sofitel , Papa John moved to the Kao Takiab area a couple of years ago. There is more parking space now an within reach of some of the Hotels along the coast, a stone throw away from Cikada Market. Papa John ranges from the Finest Steaks in town to International, Asian, European and Traditional Thai Cuisine. Oven baked , fried or BBQ grilled. It is all there. The restaurant is focused at excellent meals in a cozy and friendly atmosphere and opens seven days a week from 8 am until 23.30 pm What a better way at a German owned restaurant than to start off with a cool Erdinger beer from the tap. Bernd, Papa John, suggested we start off with an entrée but I suggested a salad instead. I must have been misunderstood because we got serving of small tuna salads , escallops in their shell and bound together little dough bags with delicious contents of which I was promised the recipe which will go into the next Food Lovers. At first, I searched for all kinds of German food like Schnitzels, Klöse (potato dumplings), thick sauces and maybe some Sauerkraut (fermented cabbage) or a great Schweinebraten ( Pork roast). Papa John insisted that he has the best steaks in town and challenged this remark knowing that I am a Steak Fetishist. and indeed, his selection is quite impressive. You can get Wagyu, Ostrich and of course New Zealand Beef ! Now Wagyu is not my kind of beef. Steak lovers may slam my likes. I love a Rib Eye with a little bit of fat, nice and thick and medium rare. Bernd ordered a grilled

sirloin from New Zealand beef, medium rare and tender as a steak can get. It practically melts on your tongue. A steak need not be accompanied by other specialties so I chose some steamed vegetables, boiled potatoe’ and a red wine sauce. The Papa John Menue is very comprehensive and serves an international public. You will find most popular European and German dishes on it. The Thai menue is also quite extensive and one can safely say that the quality of Thai food is superior class. A glass of dark red wine ( Cabernet Shiraz) goes well with any beef. A variety of ice creams and other desserts rounded of the wonderfull evening. Papa John is highly recommendable as it certainly pleases an international public. The portions are rather large and the prices fair. Anyway you get a good value for money. Friendly , prompt and good service! Here is where they are : Slightly South of Hua HJin Kao Takiab Road opposite the Amari Residence Project. Ample parking space on both sides of the road. Call 032 6551 172 if uncertain.

mouse as well. I remember a Zabaglione with Vanilla Ice to be a great dessert at La Villa as well. We tried it all. Now we could hardly walk. An Espresso and Averna on the side digested us a bit. The Grappa rounded it off ! The evening was perfect and the food even better. Marco and Sai being perfect hosts rounds of this Restaurant as highly recommendable with reasonable prices and great quality of food ! taste of the lobster linguine and Farfalle salmon e zucchine. Marco cautioned us to take it easy as there was more to come. Italians eat over hours and never rush. As a main Course we had a choice of Meats, Fish or Seafood. We took it all in small portions but we did not know the magnitude of dishes we would need to conquer. Involtini al prosciutto was very tender with a vegetable and asparagus mashed potatoes. Marco had prepared some lamb which suckled its way to my interior. The lamb with a red wine sauce was a delight and would have been enough had we known before what awaited us. On special request and ordered quite in advance, Marco would prepare any other request for a limited number of servings. Although we were served a beautiful Vongole al vino bianco , we only tasted it as we had little room for another full meal. Our main course was accompanied by a white Verdicchio, Itailan Wine, recommended for fish dishes. As La Villa makes their own Ice Cream, what else but order some to found off the evening. However Marco insisted we try chocolate

A chic style café and restaurant

he brand “The Icy Beans” was introduced about a year ago at its previous location at the Grand Hotel Night Market on Petchkasem Road. After successfully introducing its unique menu of refreshing drinks containing nutritious beans as a supplement ingredient, the expansion of the place is the next step for an even bigger success story. The Icy Beans decided to relocate and its new location on Naebkehard Rd. allows it to have grown bigger than it ever was. 4 months ago The Icy Beans was re-introduced as a refreshment house / restaurant called Naab-k-heart, open for breakfast-lunch and dinner. The new setting embraces approximately 100 seats with a pretty décor, giving cozy and comfortable feels. The charming atmosphere attracts the people passing by on this crowded road. Yes, their unique style of “drinks with beans” is still the emphasis here at this new refreshment house. I do like the idea of adding the beans to your drinks. Not only does it add healthy elements to the drinks but also adds a deliciously smooth taste. Think of whatever drinks you usually order, Thai tea-hot or cold, green tea, cocoa, fresh coffee, etc –you can add healthy beans to all. Blended mixed beans (black beans, green and red beans) in Hong Kong style is a recommendation. Talking about food, The Icy Beans/Naab-kheart, offers quite interesting menus. There are three different menus according to the time of the day. Breakfast from 7-10am, Lunch from 10am-5pm and Dinner from 5pm-10pm to be exact. As we are here for lunch, the menu suggests the ‘one dish meal’ type that most Thai people are familiar with. The

recommended ones are: Fried prawn topped with tamarind sauce (served with rice) - Imagine a plate of freshlysteamed Jasmine rice, served with luscious fried prawn soaked with the sweet and sour tamarind sauce. This one is a ‘popular’ dish here. Stir-Fried simmered pork with ‘Kiew Waan’(green cury) paste (served with rice) - It would be an advantage if you’re already familiar with the famous green curry since this one is a ‘little drier’ version of that. However, they use the simmered pork instead of chicken or other kinds of meat. The Stirfried Kiew Waan tastes very delightful with a proper blend of the spiciness from the green curry chili paste, and the sweetsalty flavors from the seasoninggood balance of flavors and textures. ...More on page 37...

The Icy Beans/Naab-k-heart Fried rice with kidney beans - Here’s another dish that you can get the nutritional benefits of beans. This one appears as a good looking plate of fried rice but made special with the kidney beans scattered around. The Icy Beans skips the meat and uses various nutritious veggies to make this dish a compelling one for those who just love healthy food. The secret of this unpretentious dish lies in its simplicity that provides such a good and balanced taste. Mackerel Clear Soup (Tom Pla Tu Hua Hin- mom’s recipe) - This soup infuses chilies, thinly sliced young galangal, crushed shallots, stalks of lemongrass and of course

the fresh mackerel. What can’t be missing are the basil leaves and Kaffir lime leaves which give a mellow flavor and aroma. It is spicy and sour, so be careful if you’re not much of a chili fan or otherwise make a suggestion about the level of spiciness you prefer! A different flavor of ice cream topped with the special homemade icy beans sauce is a great choice to conclude the lovely meal at The Icy Beans/Naabk-heart. But if you want something a little stronger, coffee or tea in a unique style of The Icy Beans is perfect to complete this eating experience. As much as these dishes keep me

Black Mountain Spa for Golfers Golfers made ready for another 18 holes

T

he Black Mountain Spa opened only two months ago under the leadership of Khun Tak. Tak is a certified Spa Manager and gained her experience through her job at The Conrad Maldives and through Study of Spa things on a College level. As Golf is one of those popular sports which can take all day, especially if you would play like yours truly, missing the ball on numerous occasions and then again, when hitting it, it wanders off into uncertain pineapple fields forever. My handicap therefore and truly may be Golf itself. The Spa however can revive the energies lost in the game by true Golfers, those, who get up a 5:30 in the morning and arrive at the course before the birds and caddies. After a painful 18 holes with all muscles aching, lost face, lost money, swearing never to play again(until tomorrow), Khun Tak is the right person to design a wonderful relaxing Spa session for all little Tigers and Mickelsons.

a couple of elbow locators to hit my knots in the back muscles which made me groan like a tiger with a mouthpiece on. After that, she treated the vulnerable back areas and smoothened out my back pain. She did say I needed to do this at least twice a week to get better results. My face mask was due and the composition was explained. I heard the word Caviar. Caviar was one of the ingredients. I asked for a toast or soda biscuit but I was told that it was only an ingredient. However, after the mask was applied, I secretly licked off a small piece which then was stuck between my teeth with the rest of the now drying out mask. After a while and with a foot massage whilst the mask was drying, the peeling off stated, revealing a whole new face. My wife didn’t ask me if I entered the wrong house. As a matter of fact she saw no change but I felt it. I felt a lot fresher and tighter skin on the forehead. Altogether the treatments were very professional and very good. From the health questionnaire to the after treatment tea, all was gallantly organized with grace and dedication. Khun Tak can be congratulated with a great Spa. As Black Mountain now also have Tennis courts, I may end up under the supervision of Tak in the near future again. Tennis players ´muscles are far more tested than almost any other sport as you move practically all muscles in your body at the same time.

The Spa was designed, equipped and build by a young lady with very professional views. Tak had Carte Blanche to propose the Spa design. The result is stunning. Upon arrival, I was welcomed with a nice fresh glass of Lemongrass tea. Khun Tak introduced the Spa and showed me around. There is besides treatment rooms, a barber, a beauty salon area and a pedicure corner. The colors are black and gold in Black Mountain fashion and the atmosphere is very relaxing. With due respect to my seniority, Tak politely suggested a healthy oily body massage with a special facial treatment that would make me at least 10 years younger. I accepted politely as well inquiring about the facial. Anyway I didn´t want to make it that easy for my therapist, Khun This Spa is highly recommendable - Thank Kan. I suggested she tell me where my back you Khun Tak and Khun Kan for a relaxing problem was. It took her three minutes and , invigorating treatment. and my friends very happy, I’m sure that other dishes are equally palatable and you might want to try them all. ENJOY! *** It’s also noteworthy that there’s another branch of The Icy Beans on the 2nd floor at the Hua Hin Market Village. There they offer the same recipe of delicious refreshing drinks but not food.

The Icy Beans / Naab-k-heart Open: 07am-10pm Address: 10 Naebkehard Road (opposite The Hen)

New Faces In Town HAPPY NEW YEAR FOLKS Gratitude really is the only attitude!!!

By Jilly

Y

es, I am entirely grateful that 2010 is gone for good. What a year! Earthquakes in Haiti, Chile, Sumatra, Java and china collectively killed over 250,000 people. A quarter of a million people gone! Volcanic ash grounded us and oil spewed into the Gulf of Mexico in one of the worst environmental disasters on record. The people of Pakistan were literally wiped out overnight by the floods. It seems that mother earth is expressing her anger and throwing up. Just to prove that everything must come out, good old Wiki leaks is disclosing covered up and classified, need- to –beknown information! So I am grateful, for my anonymity, for my health, for the roof over my head, for the clothes on my back and for my semi-sane state of being! And most of all for my friends all over the planet who validate my being and reflect who and what I think I am. So, New Year has always been a time for looking back to the past, and more importantly, forward to the coming year. It’s a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make and resolve to follow through on. I really love the way the Japanese do it! Throughout December, the Japanese celebrate ‘bounenkai’ (forget-the-year-parties) and everything is cleaned to perfection! It’s important for the Japanese to welcome a new year with a clean state. I like the thought of that – cleaning out the house and the mind -after all, as above so below – or, as on the inside, so reflected outside. It’s so great that we can shut down one really lousy year and embrace another with hope and determination to make this the best year ever (again)

New Doggy in Town Pooh from Mexico Little Pooh immigrated from Mexico a couple of years back. He tried many a job but couldn´t hold one for long. His Visa shows an overstay of a couple of years but grawls at any Immi Officer that tries to approach. Pooh now moved to Hua Hin and surveilles the street where he lives and makes a living as a security man or better, gets fed . Pooh likes Thailand a lot but wouldn´t mind moving back to Mexico as he left his fiancée in Guadalajara. Furthermore he misses Tequila and Burritos and Cancun as well. Pooh is a Chihuahua but at times needs to perform as a Tiger to keep intruders out. His favourite music is of course Mariachi but like hip hop of Snoop Doggy. Pluto is his favourite TV star and Lassie and Rin Tin Tin his white screen heroes. He is extremely fond of Lynne, his protégée. Hey girls, to get a date with Pooh, call 08007008009 ask for the Boss.

I am not a church going girl, but thought I that I would pop into the Power of Love church at the Marriott last Sunday and I was really grateful that I could keep an open mind and join in the wonderful singing and the genuine love and friendship offered there. It felt good to tap into my heart, and to feel welcomed and happy. My stress diminished for a brief interlude and I met wonderful people there, which is what it’s all about, isn’t it? Friends, happiness and connecting with the spirit?? So with my soul nourished, my house and mind replenished and cleansed and the miserable old year out on its ear and the new year in with sparkling Champagne, I would like to enforce my motto for the coming year, the only pain I want in 2011, is champagne.!!! Welcome 2011 Year of the Bunny Rabbit and according to Chinese tradition, the Rabbit brings a year in which you can catch your breath and calm your nerves. It is a time for negotiation. Let’s create a safe, peaceful lifestyle, so we will be able to calmly deal with any problem that may arise or deal with the fires that need to be put out after the year of the terrible Tiger. Happy New year – may it be blessed with gratitude, patience and authentic personal growth.

Cha-Am to Go Crabby

at Crab Festival in Feb. 2011 B

lue crab is one of the most famous seafood for beach vacationers. In Thailand, blue crab from different provinces will taste differently. And Cha-Am’s blue crab is well-known for its sweet, fresh and juicy meat.

By Sorravit

There are two local fishing communities in Cha-Am that live on blue crab catching: Baan Klong Thien in Saphan Hin and Bang Sai Yoi in Nern Sura. The local fishers of Baan Klong Thien, in particular, will use small canals in their community to moor their boat and use the area by the canals to sell the crab. How the local fishers sell the crab is also unique as they put it in a bag hung with a bridge pillar. The crab will be soaked in canal water while waiting for customers to buy. So, the name, ‘crab pulling,’ is derived from this activity. Thanks to its fresh and juicy meat, blue crab of Cha-Am is highly favored by both Thai and foreign seafood lovers. To satisfy their appetite, the Cha-Am Municipality is organizing, “Crab Pulling Festival @ Cha-Am,” from 12 to 20 February 2011 at the Cha-Am lookout on the beach. Since February is the period when most blue crabs are caught and the Cha-Am Municipality is now promoting blue crab conservation and breeding, the Crab Pulling Festival @ Cha-Am will play a key role in promoting local business and tourism of Cha-Am. At the event, tourists not only savor delicious blue crab menus but also admire local lifestyle of the fishers in the area. Highlights include selling of blue crab by local fishers at Baan Khlong Thien in which crab pulling will be demonstrated, and cultural performances nightly. Don’t believe anyone until you have a proof of the pudding. Come and join the Crab Pulling Festival @ Cha-Am from 12-20 February 2011.

Vintage Car Parade Reaches Cha-Am On เมืองชะอำต้อนรับคณะพาเหรด รถโบราณ ครัง้ ที่

By Sorravit

17 December 2010, Cha-Am welcomed a big and colorful vintage car parade which proceeded to the Methawalai Hotel. The welcoming ceremony, organized by the Cha-Am municipality, the Sofitel Centara Grand Resort and Villa in Hua Hin, the Vintage Car Association of Thailand in collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), was a part of the 8th Vintage Car Festival which took place between 18 and 19 December 2010. With an aim to promote tourism in Cha-Am, support preservation of invaluable vintage and classic cars of Thailand and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the TAT, the 8th Vintage Car Festival of this year will especially help the Chai Pattana Foundation under the royal patronage of His Majesty the King by donating some proceeds to the Foundation. The welcoming ceremony for the vintage car parade in Cha-Am highlighted a grand dinner banquet for all the car’s owners, distinguished guests and the press. At the banquet, the Cha-Am Mayor Mr. Nukul Pornsomboonsiri related the history of this famous beachfront city of Petchaburi province. He said that Cha-Am was one of the oldest beachfront cities of Thailand where many kings reportedly had taken vacation since the Ayudhaya period. Evidence is found in the name of many places in this city like Baan Tanod Luang and Baan Wang Kao or literally the old palace. Even the name of the city is derived from the word Cha-Aan (literally, ‘washing a saddle’) because the King Naresuan stopped by here to wash his horse’s saddle. During the Rattanakosin period, many Thai kings prefer having their royal residence built here. For example, the Pra Nakhon Khiri or Khao Wang was built in the reign of King Rama IV, the Pra Ram Rachaniwet in the reign of King Chulalongkorn and the

F

Maruekathayawan Summer Palace in the reign of King Rama VI. Since then, Cha-Am has been favored by Thai elites as a holiday getaway. It is reported that over 4 million tourists visit Cha-Am each year. So, given the large number of tourists, Cha-Am may be the most visited beachfront city of Thailand if compared to other beaches located in the western side of the Gulf of Thailand. Not only does Cha-Am have white sandy beaches but the city also boasts natural parks, cultural, historical and archaeological sites. With convenient location and a wide range of accommodation, Cha-Am avails itself of different recreational activities for visitors of all ages. The vintage car parade stayed overnight in Cha-Am to attend activities on tourism promotion before proceeding to Hua Hin on the next day.

E-Commerce can Help Local Entrepreneurs: DBD

P

etchaburi, 13 Dec. 2010 - Department of Business Development (DBD) is a government agency under the Ministry of Commerce which primarily works on promotion of potential entrepreneurs and enhancement of the business competitiveness in Thailand. In so doing, the DBD introduces the Electronic Commerce, known widely as E-Commerce, to entrepreneurs nationwide. Realizing that the E-Commerce is capable of extending business opportunities through the Internet and online communication, the DBD has thus launched the E-Commerce Clinic for SMEs – a project to provide and develop knowledge about on-line business for local entrepreneurs of Thailand. It is already carried out in Petchaburi and Lampang. According to the data provided by the Internet World Stat, over two billions people are using the Internet now. In Thailand alone, the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC) reported that over 16 million people in Thailand used the Internet in 2010. So, if business owners can apply the E-Commerce with their business, they can access to more target groups. Accordingly, the E-Commerce Clinic for SMEs focuses on how to make a website of business owners appears on the first page of widely used search engines like Google or Yahoo, how to benefit from the social network website like Facebook and how to use a blog and advertise through the search engines. Having started in Petchaburi for the first time at the seminar entitled, “Thai Business towards World Standard with E-Commerce,” on 13 December 2010, the project, held at the Grand Pacific Resort and Spa in Cha-Am, saw a lot of highly qualified speakers share and provide knowledge and experience on E-Commerce with the participants. One of the speakers, Mr. Suebsak Lewlak, a marketing specialist from Hroyy Incorporation, said that over 80% of the Internet users in the US sought for products via search engines apart from magazines and TV adverts. Should the website of business entrepreneurs appear on the first page of the search engines, more profit will be reaped. How to succeed in this is not at all difficult: write concisely and

update the website frequently to allow the search engines to get as much information from the website. Mr. Burin Kledmanee, the webmaster of ReadyPlanet.com, informed that one of common problems on E-Commerce was the website’s credibility because buyers can not see the seller face-to-face. So, the seller needs to make his/ her website as convincing as possible by providing high resolution pictures of every product. Having the website certified from the DBD will also encourage customers to buy products more from it. Dr. Waranyu Sujiworapanpong, a researcher on E-Commerce for the DBD, said that products sold better and much more from the on-line business were usually those that customers bought less via common purchase channels. Normally, shops sell highly favored products, ignoring those lesser known due to limited space. However, this does not mean that less favored products can not be sold at all. Using E-Commerce which can combine every product together in one website can help a lot as business channels will be more extensive. Even the top hit music of the world is sold on-line for 20 times a day. Plus, E-Commerce does not require its owner to open more shops. The next activity under the project will be a workshop on how to analyze business websites. This workshop will be organized in January, 2011, in both Lampang and Petchaburi. Moreover, the DBD is allowing undergraduate students to join the workshop as speaker assistants and work with local entrepreneurs in the form of a project work. This will help students learn more on how to do business in the real world – the main objective of the DBD to connect academic and professional worlds together. Business owners interested in taking part in the upcoming program can contact khun Chawanun Santinanalert at tel. 086 506 7302 or fax 02 9649110 or e-mail: chawanun@ hroyy.com.

For more information on the news, please contact khun Suebsak Lewlak at 086 556 4565 or e-mail: suebsak@hroyy.com.

Cha-Am Today Language Corner

Welcome to the latest edition of Language Corner, the easy to understand guide to speaking functional Thai. As New Year is coming we are going to look at what we will say during this time of celebration. The greeting in Thai remains the same for this event and is simple ‘Sa-wat-dee’ plus ‘New Year’ which is ‘bpee mai’. ‘Sa-wat-dee bpee mai!’ which is directly translated as ‘Hello New Year!’ Alternatively, you can say ‘Suk-san wan bpee mai!’. We say both phrases for ‘Happy New Year’ but for ‘Merry Christmas’ we say ‘Suk-san wan Christmas!’ If you just want to raise your glass and wish someone ‘Good Luck’ you can say ‘Chook-dee’ which is the Thai equivalent to the European ‘Cheers’ ‘Prost’ ‘Santé’ and ‘Skol’ Practice dialogue between Pimpa and John: Pimpa: Kun John ja bpai tiao tee-nai wan bpee mai ka? John: Pom kit waa pom ja bpai Phuket krap. Pimpa: Kor hai tiao sa-nuk na ka. John: Kop-kun krap. Sa-wat-dee bpee mai na krap. Pimpa: Suk-san wan bpee mai chen-gan ka.!
