he Lone Ranger and Tonto went camping in the desert. After they got their tent all set up, both men fell sound asleep. Some hours later, Tonto wakes the Lone Ranger and says, ‘Kemo Sabe, look towards sky, what you see? ‘The Lone Ranger replies, ‘I see millions of stars.’ ‘What that tell you?’ asked Tonto The Lone Ranger ponders for a minute then says, ‘Astronomically speaking, it tells me there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets.

Complain, complain..let´s face it we complain a lot , about the weather , the traffic , our neighbours , the stray dogs, the authorities and often about where we are. I get a lot of feedback on situations which in our part of the world , wherever that may be, is better regulated , safer, cleaner, whatever. Folks, my answer is simple; why do you stay in a place which you don´t like? Why did you move away if it is so much better where you come from. I find it great to stay in Hua Hin. The weather is reliable, you can always plan something whenever you want, if you smile, you are smiled back to. You hardly hear a car honk, a driver swear, some cat cutting you, sticking that typical Italian finger up in the air…fanculo. Sure, Zebras are there to cross the road at that spot, but no one teaches drivers to wait until you crossed the road, no matter what colour you give to them. Yes we need traffic lights. With a limited budget, the municipality invites philanthropists to donate some and have their names stuck to the posts on a metal plate. Arabs don’t like Arabia, it is burning wherever you look. They like it in Europe, America and immigrate by the millions yearly. There they can taste real “democrazy”. They demonstrate in London, Amsterdam, Paris..you name it and our authorities protect them until one day they will take over. It may come sooner than we think. Ever tried building a Christian church in Syria? This is as far as I go, had to release some steam. Really it is very good in Thailand. It is safe, relaxed, simple and negotiable and yes it has become expensive to live in Thailand. Oil prices up, petrol up, vegetables up, rice up. A cup of coffee (tall) at Starbucks now costs 135 Baht. I get a double portion at Smile Coffee next to McD. Even at McD, a cuppa costs 40 Baht only. Household spending up at least 25%. UBC “all” 2.000 Baht, paying for all the commercials and repeats, Internet 2000 Baht ( still slow and unreliable). Salaries unchanged. A family of 4 need at least 100.000 Baht to live comfortably including rent or mortgage. Hua Hin is boring? Got more to offer than Alicante! More than Brindisi, more than Kreta, more than St. Tropez and definitely more

here are people among us who study the currency markets and predict a total collapse of The Euro, The Dollar, The Yuan, The Pound and The Yen. Apparently, banker Heads want to create a separate world currency controlled by them. But than, what is reality? Well, Japan has the 3rd biggest economy in the world, but they are also deeply swamped in debt. At well over 200%, the Japanese government has the biggest debt to GDP ratio of all of the major industrialized nations. In fact, it is estimated that this massive pile of Japanese government debt amounts to approximately 7.5 million yen for every person living in the entire nation of Japan. Several large European nations would have already defaulted on their debts if they had not been bailed out last year. Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Belgium and Spain are all on very shaky ground right now. Several of them have already had their credit ratings slashed. The United States has the biggest national debt of all. The 14 trillion dollar threshold has just been crossed, and the national debt is now less than 300 billion dollars away from the 14.294 trillion dollar debt ceiling. If the U.S. Congress does not raise the debt ceiling, the U.S. government will shortly begin to default on its debts. Of course everyone fully expects that the U.S. Congress will indeed raise the debt ceiling just like they have every time before. A currency collapse is when the value of the currency falls so fast that all those who hold the currency panic, and sell them at any cost. In this scenario, sellers would include: foreign governments who hold U.S. Treasuries, traders in exchange rate futures who trade the dollar versus other currencies, and individual investors who demand assets denominated in anything other than for example dollars. The collapse of a currency means that everyone is trying to sell their currencydenominated assets, and no one wants to buy them, driving the value of that currency down to near zero. Don’t look that good at all does it? We will need to buy gold bars, carry them around and cut a piece of if we pay for things. May need to have a body guard with all that gold.

On 21 June 2011 at 11.30 a.m., a diplomatic delegation from the American Embassy, headed by the charming Ambassador Kristie Kenney in Thailand paid a visit to the Hua Hin Municipality and discussed about issues on tourism, environment with the municipal executives. The American diplomat met the Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Jira Pongpaiboon, the Deputy Mayors Mr. Athikhun Butying and Mr. Suwit Rienrungreung as well as members of the Hua Hin Municipal Council. After receiving a welcoming bouquet, the American diplomats handed over a written well-wishing in front of His Majesty the King’s portrait at the Municipal Office. The American diplomatic corp then attended a presentation on current issues and problems in Hua Hin. After the presentation, Mrs. Kristie Kenney, realizing how important of Hua Hin is on tourism promotion in Thailand, will be pleased to promote and encourage more visitors from the US to come and stay at this beachfront town as less Americans come to Hua Hin than Europeans and Scandinavians. In terms of business investment in Hua Hin, the US ambassador asked the municipal executives to give support to American businesspeople who would like to do business on retirement

institutions for the senior as Hua Hin is also famous for top notched retreat accommodations. Mrs. Kenney was glad to learn that, despite some environmental and infrastructural problems, Hua Hin, unlike Bangkok, is the city where people live in unity regardless of their nationality. She said that she liked Thailand very much because the country is peaceful with nice people. Besides its exceptional cuisine, Thailand also has unique traditions and culture. In Hua Hin, for example, there are many interesting sport and music events throughout the year, namely world-class golf tournaments and a yearly Jazz festival. So, if Hua Hin needs any help, the US Embassy is pleased to do so. The Hua Hin Mayor Mr. Jira said that the municipal executives were happy to welcome the American diplomats here and it would be a good opportunity if American people did business on retirement for senior citizens in Hua Hin. The Hua Hin Municipality is going to collect, analyze and report on problems of investment in Hua Hin to present to the American ambassador soon. In doing so, the tourism business will be expanded to the US, a new target for business and investment on tourism for Thailand apart from the regular ones from Europe.

Hua Hin to Enforce Jet Ski Order and Kiteboard Training

By Chamnan

T

he Hua Hin Municipality in cooperation with the royal patrol fleet of the Klai Kangwon Royal Palace and the Harbour Department will implement policy to encourage well-organized jet ski business on Hua Hin beaches and safe kiteboard training for visitors. The Deputy Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Suwit Rienrungreung said that the owners of 24 jet skis, banana boats and water scooters in Hua Hin beaches were asked not to increase their water sports equipment. Parking and keeping the jet skis and boats should be done properly within the specified area – approximately 50 to 100 meters from the beach – for the safety of

beachgoers. In terms of kiteboarding, trainers should be officiated with a license and registration. The training area should be clearly identified for further inspection. Trainers have to inform their trainees about safety rules and regulations on kiteboarding, especially how to use life vests and apply for life insurance before the training. In addition, all trainers have to pay taxes to the Municipality. According to the Deputy Mayor of Hua Hin, jet skis play a major part in tourism promotion in Hua Hin as visitors here want to enjoy riding them. However, the officials have to control the number of jet skis because too many of

Seminar on the World and Provincial Economic Trends in Prachuab Khirikhan A

seminar on the world and provincial economic trend has taken place recently in Prachuab Khirikhan at the Wannara Hotel. Participated by interested people from governmental and private sectors, the seminar was officially opened by the Deputy Governor of Prachuab Khirikhan Mr. Apinan Chantarangsi. The keynote speaker is Asst. Prof. Dr. Thanawat Pholwichai, the director of the Center of Economic and Business Prediction of the University of Chamber of Commerce. Its main aim is to enable concerned participants to discuss and share opinion about future trends of the economy in Prachuab Khirikhan according to the 4-year provincial plan between 2010 and 2013. As reported by Mrs. Wasana Banluphol, the treasurer of the Prachuab Khirikhan Provincial Office, current economic situations are unstable and somewhat risky for business activities due to impact of world problems, namely oil price fluctuation, strong Baht value, natural disasters that caused damage to agricultural products as well as political instability in Thailand which affects confidence among foreign investors. These factors are major concerns for economic policy-makers and concerned agencies in dealing with any possible situations in the future. Mrs. Wasana also added that, in accordance with the 4-year provincial plan, Prachuab Khirikhan will serve as a production hub for processed

ith strong concern about the increasing number of vehicles in Hua Hin which causes traffic problems in the city, the Prachuab Khirikhan Governor Mr. Weera Sriwattanatrakul and the Deputy Governor Mr. Apinan Chantarangsi, in close cooperation with the committee for traffic problem solutions in Hua Hin, have succeeded in tackling traffic in congested areas. The first area is the entrance and the exit of Soi Hua Hin Thansamai for which authorities allowed the one-way entrance and exit. This will enable cars to enter into and get out of the Soi in a different way. From 2pm to 5pm, black-plate taxis can park in the area behind the Wat Hua Hin Buddhist temple, especially the one behind the temple wall adjacent to the Wat Hua Hin School. Authorities have already marked a clear parking lane for those taxis. 30 motor taxis can park nearby the Clock Tower in front of the Wat Hua Hin instead. Around 80 motor taxis in front of the Sirin Hotel on Damnern Kasem Road can park on the footpath close to the Hotel’s wall. The diagonal line was marked on the footpath to let the taxis park while leaving 1.5-meter space for passers-by. The area on the Damnern Kasem Road, which the taxis once used to park, is now used for picking up visitors. Drivers who park their car on the road will be charged and the area is declared a special zone where legal requirements and municipal acts

Traffic Problems Solved are piloted for traffic problem solution in Hua Hin. On Amnuaysin Road (in front of the Suphamit Hotel), only 2 to 4 cars are allowed to park. The 2 vans owned by an Indian tailor must be parked elsewhere. This area has only 3 parking spaces for motor taxis on the footpath: by the entrance of the Thanawit Hotel, next to the Khun Toy restaurant and by the house of khun Khai Ngamlue. The Hua Hin Municipality will soon mark and provide clear parking signs for taxi vans, motor taxis and cars for rent in all the above-mentioned areas. Finally, the area on the Sra Song Road behind the fresh market will be marked to allow cars to park temporarily to pick up and transfer goods. Those cars can park at the two western points by the market or the eastern point next to the former bus terminal. For better understanding among owners of taxis and motor taxis, Pol. Col. Damrongsak Thongngarmtrakul, the superintendent of Hua Hin Police Office, has discussed this matter at a meeting on 24 June at 1 pm. already.

Should it be promoted well, Thai kiteboarders can become famous national and international water sport players in the near future. The Hua Hin Municipality will work with beach patrol police to closely monitor both the jet skiers and kiteboarders. Charities involve residents of Hua Hin who spend generously to support Christianity and among others, children and families in need.

ristie Kenney The US Ambassador to Thailand paid a visit to Hua Hin to visit a school and boarding institution for autistic and down syndrome children on the Bypass Highway. Later in the afternoon, the Ambassador was interviewed by Holiday TV Thailand and SURF-FM 102.5 Radio Station. Holiday TV moderator and director

Andrew has supported charities and people in need as long as he can remember. His mottos are “give and you will receive”. “Love and you will be loved”. At the Church of Love the congregation celebrates Christianity with happy songs and sermons. Even though a pastor leads the service, members are encouraged to hold a sermon as well. Joanna of Smart Kids has “preached” a couple of times now. Hua Hin Today wishes Andrew many healthy years of the good work for Christianity, the needy and the troubled.

Ton Gerrits recorded the entire visit of her Excellency for TV 11 in Bangkok and the visit was broadcasted live on TV. Surgical Dept. Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin T

Bangkok Hospital

he Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin reached an important milestone in May when the first surgical operation was performed at the hospital. The Operating Room Suite (OR) on the second floor has three separate rooms or theatres. The architecture and construction of ORs has to be perfect and enormous efforts are made to ensure patient safety and prevent infection. The ventilation system is completely separate from the rest of the hospital and the air is filtered and treated to ensure its purity and the air supply is delivered in such a way as not to affect the patient.

If you have Rh-negative blood ,we invite you to join the Rhnegative club,by registering during 08.30 a.m.-04.30 p.m. on Mondays-Fridays at Blood Service Unit of Hua Hin Health Station where situated on Damnoen Kasem Road in Hua Hin District , Prachuap Khiri Khan. For More information, please call (032)512-370

Many people are needed to perform an operation; the surgeon and the surgical assistant, an anesthesia doctor and at least two nurses. We have well trained and experienced staff for all these roles. Good Anesthesia is very important for the safety of the patient and the skill of our Anesthesia staff is first class. Operating room nurses undergo a rigorous training and have to be extremely disciplined and careful in their work and we have a great team of professional nurses. The amount of equipment that is needed to perform the hundreds of different operations is enormous and the care and maintenance of them is another special skill. Among these instruments are the many scopes used to perform minimally invasive or ‘key-hole’ surgery. We recently performed our first laparoscopic removal of a Gall bladder using these instruments. We have several surgeons available on staff and in our first month we have performed several different operations including two Cesarean operations for the birth of two healthy, happy babies. Some of our surgeons are full-time in Hua Hin, others will visit from Bangkok and so were will be bringing the best of our expertise from Bangkok to Hua Hin. A few patients will be transferred to our flagship hospital in Bangkok but this will happen less and less as we increase our capabilities. We are being very cautious and will only perform surgery when we feel 100% confident of our capabilities. Some operations have to be performed as emergencies and we are fully functional twenty four hours a day. Other surgery is termed ‘elective’ this is when a surgery needs to be performed but does not have to be done immediately. In this case the patient and surgeon can spend time discussing the need for the surgery and planning the time to fit in with the patient’s schedule. The Chief of the Surgical department is Dr Thawatchai who has recently returned to Thailand after having spent most of his surgical career in the United States. He is Board Certified and twice re-certified by the American Board of Surgery. He has vast experience in abdominal surgery and surgery of the Breast and Thyroid. His English and Thai are fluent and he is a very easy-to-talk-to doctor. Care of the patient after surgery is very important. Many patients will go to our Intensive care unit ICU) for the first twenty-four hours, as our ability to observe them and monitor their vital signs is better here. We do not make our patients go home too early, as is the case in many countries, and you will stay until you feel comfortable in going home. Many patients, especially after Orthopedic surgery on their bones and muscles need physiotherapy and rehabilitation care following surgery. We have an excellent department and the wonderful reputation that we have built up in the network for this work will be provided in Hua Hin. Families can be at the hospital during the surgery and can wait in the comfortable lounge area on the second floor and speak with the surgeon after the operation. If you have any questions about surgical issues please contact me -Moreton@bgh.co.th We also have an expert in Diabetes Dr Nattanon, an endocrinologist from Bangkok who sees patients at BHN every THURSDAY.

for beachfront homes in Hua Hin, Thailand

S

trong demand for beachfront homes in Thai resort town Hua Hin is leading to growing competition for seaside land amongst developers and rising prices. According to Risinee Sarikaputra, associate director of research and consultancy at Knight Frank Chartered (Thailand), beachfront condominiums are be difficult to find due to the scarcity of beachfront land in the area, thus the selling prices are expected to increase. There will also be more demand from foreign buyers due to the convenience of the location with its complete facilities. “The lack of good beachfront land plots in Hua Hin has resulted in condominium development moving south to Pranburi and north to Cha-am,” said Risinee. “Currently, there are many big players entering the market. This will increase the tension to smaller-scale companies and privately owned ones that have developed in the area. The next surge in condominium developments is most likely to take place in Khao Takiab, Chaam, and Pranburi”

European investors eye Asian Real Estate

uropean investment into commercial real estate in Asia is likely to increase in the next three to five years. European real estate investors are likely to invest more funds in commercial properties in Asia in coming years as they gain confidence in a region that is leading growth, according to Steffen Wolf, a senior executive at Savills Asia-Pacific. The property services firm believes investment will increase significantly in the next three to five years and argues that focus has changed substantially in the past 1215 months. The entire Asian region including

North Asia, Australia and India are of interest to European investors. Wolf’s main role is to help Savills’ many European clients to invest in and manage commercial properties in Asia, mainly in offices but also for other commercial purposes such as retail. “”It doesn’t make sense to buy one property in one market. [Investors] want to get some scale out of managing properties. They also want to de-risk themselves by owning not just one property but two or three,” he said. According to Reuters, Savills plans to set up its own investment fund to acquire real estate in Asia, which is expected to drive the global rebound in commercial real estate as strong economic growth and rising property values attract investors. Other real estate service firms such as CB Richard Ellis and Jones Lang LaSalle are also diversifying their practices to include fund management in order to reduce dependence on transactions, which tend to be more volatile. JLL’s investment arm LaSalle Investment Management currently has US43 billion worth of assets under management globally. Wolf added that Savills is recommending its European clients to invest in commercial real estate in the financial hubs of Asia, Singapore and Hong Kong, because prices can appreciate in coming years despite already high levels. The region’s economic growth will continue to drive demand, he said. For investors more confident with Asia and with a willingness to take higher risks, Wolf points to China. “If you can get comfortable with China, then Shanghai and Beijing, for commercial properties, is something a longterm investor should not avoid,” he said

In Bangkok’s “super prime” market, location is everything

I

n every established property market, the super prime properties are a segment on their own. Super prime properties do not follow the mass market, neither do the super rich buyers whose criterion and judgement are far removed from the general market trends. London, for example, clearly reflects this. While the majority of the UK market has not recovered back to its peak, the super prime market has continued with its own momentum and doesn’t track the general overall market. Transactions and prices are driven by strong demand from international investors from Russia, China, India and the Middle East for a limited and specific super prime stock. London has traditionally been the most sought after global property market and one which has proved to be a good long-term investment. London offers super prime projects such as One Hyde Park which in itself attracts affluent international investors. While elements of the Bangkok market are experiencing a glut of supply and their prices are flat, Bangkok lacks variety in the super prime market. My definition of super prime properties is those priced over THB 200,000 per sq.m. with an outstanding location, quality and facilities. In late 2007, The Sukhothai Residences was the first super prime property to sell off-plan and attracted both elite Thai and foreign buyers. After the global crisis, the market for luxury properties declined globally, but demand is now rebounding. In Bangkok, we have recently seen a few more super prime projects being launched off-plan including The Ritz Carlton Residences and the St. Regis Residences which is completed. Many people tend to raise the question why these properties command a price premium over and above the market average of THB 125,000

By Aliwassa Pathnadabutr, Courtesy of www.property-report.com

to 150,000 per sq.m. for other highend condominium projects, and how strong the demand is for super prime properties in Bangkok. My answer is yes, demand is strong, but only if the projects tick all the right boxes which is expected from a super prime project by international standards. Location is undoubtedly the most important factor. From an international perspective, Bangkok is a popular tourist destination and a regional hub in Southeast Asia. Location wise, the prestige addresses in the CBD which are well connected with an upmarket surrounding are the most desirable. The areas which can compare to Manhattan in New York and Knightsbridge in London will be the areas commanding the premium. One key criteria for location includes uninterrupted spectacular views such as Lumpini Park or the skyline which can add value and premiums. However, it is important to ensure that if all units do not face the main views or are on low floors, they are offered alternative views such as pool or landscaped gardens. Iconic designs and celebrity architects often go hand in hand with super prime properties. While it is difficult to attribute the percentage of premium generated by a celebrity architect, they often add intrinsic value to the project in addition to design values. The quality of design and functionality is ensured and in many instances the projects become a landmark itself. For example, Mahanakorn where the Ritz Carlton Residences is located boasts a cutting-edge building design by OIe Scheeren. Interior design, whilst subjective in its appeal, must also be the right style and reflects the project’s character and express the feel of

luxury through the design, use of quality materials and workmanship. Along with the design, quality specifications are mandatory for super prime projects and an aspect which developers cannot compromise on. Buyers of super prime properties will expect a level of quality and the latest technology to be incorporated. The use of premium brands for sanitary ware, kitchen cabinets and fittings, appliances and branded furniture, for example, will convey a sense of quality. Branding is another aspect which is closely associated with super prime projects, from the use of five-star hotel operators, the architect which sometimes is a brand itself, or a developer such as Aman which is an internationally known developer and hotel chain. In Bangkok, most super prime projects to date are associated with five-star hotel chains- The Sukhothai, Ritz Carlton and St.Regis. The use of a brand guarantees a level

of service and property management which ensures the property upkeep and value appreciation. The project scale also directly impacts exclusivity. Most successful super prime projects globally feature under a 100 units. Low density and exclusivity are mandatory for the super rich market. However, the number of units will also depend on factors such as pricing, market conditions, planning regulations and financial feasibility. Lastly, the services and amenities offered by the development must also exceed the basic amenities offered in other projects. Facilities such as a sizable pool and gym, steam and sauna rooms are expected, but to achieve the premium, super prime projects must offer the additional extras such as a spa, private lounge and concierge services. All the above factors are achievable, but Thailand needs to work on construction standards and workmanship as many luxury projects today still suffer from defects and delivering flawless quality is essential for super prime properties. Buyers for super prime properties are driven by preference in choice rather than price and if all the key criteria have been met, I believe there is room for more super prime properties in Bangkok. The challenge in selling super prime off-plan is in conveying the level of luxury and quality as attributes such project facilities, services and the overall atmosphere are not tangible until project completion. US Open winner Rory Oath to Tiger Woods McIlroy has the ability I to electrify golf like Tiger Woods

By Colin Montgomerie

R

ory McIlroy fell out of the cradle swinging a golf club. We have known for a long time about his talent. There were questions to answer following that Sunday in Augusta but he dealt with those brilliantly at Congressional.

M

ajor achievement: Rory McIlroy hopes that his US Open victory will just be the first of many major titles Photo: ACTION IMAGES The question now is how will he deal with the expectation that his US Open victory has created. It wasn’t just any old victory. The manner of it took the breath away and drew the obvious comparisons with Tiger Woods. Take away the final round of the Masters and he has dominated seven of the eight rounds of major golf this year. Go back to last year when he shot that opening 63 at St Andrews and at Whistling Straits, where he had a putt to make the play-off in the US PGA Championship and he has been a contender in the last four. That is very rare. Everyone is mentioning the name Tiger Woods. I think Rory needs to do that half a dozen times to reach the Tiger bracket but he has the ability to do so, no question. America loves him. It is a youthful country. Doing well as a young gun is part of the heritage. They love their sports stars and he is one of them. They took to him after his 62 at the Quail Hollow Championship on the final day and at the Masters, especially with the way he took defeat. There is a way of taking victory and a way of accepting defeat. The former is easy. The latter less so. McIlroy dealt with the whole thing with dignity and came back to win so impressively. What do you do for an encore? This is the problem he has created. The next major is The Open in three weeks. The expectation has not been this high since Tiger won at Pebble Beach by 15 shots in 2000. He then went to the Open at St Andrews and won by eight, shooting 19 under, the all-time major record. Rory is in this territory. The pressure is on. There are very few players good enough to cope with that, but he is. I played with him at the Irish Open in one of his first tour events and a couple of times since. I saw great potential and was impressed by the way he came through the ball. But nobody is sure of anybody’s potential until they do it for the first time. So it is fantastic, incredible that he has come through. I got to know Rory a little better at the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor obviously. He was quiet there, along with Martin Kaymer. But that was not unexpected. I knew he would be nervous and that is why I partnered him with Graeme McDowell, who was very much the senior partner. Rory has grown from that experience, from being part of that team that we had in Wales. When you are in a room with experienced operators like Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Luke Donald, Miguel Angel Jimenez and myself, not to mention my vice captains you are bound to learn from that. He showed just how much last week. He was impressive every day at Congressional, particularly the second. I know from experience

what it is like to tee up on the second day after shooting a 65 on that course. Granted schedules are different now. Rory’s preparation was less congested than mine. Nevertheless to have a four for a 64 on the second day after shooting 65 on the first was amazing. I was working for Sky. We had a lot of players coming through talking about it and they were using the word power a lot. It is a raw talent that he has. You can not teach someone to come through the ball like he does. You either have it or you don’t. He is one of the few players I have seen who hits a ball that well. He is really exciting. And it is great that he is European. I said before hand that I thought the winner at Congressional would be European. My tip was Westwood and he came close. I didn’t see the winning margin but who did? Like everybody I can’t wait to see how he goes at Royal St Georges in the Open. He is not playing until then, which builds the sense of anticipation. I think the course will suit him. There is no golf course in the world that is not right for him. He has the talent of Woods. Look what Tiger did on the bouncy course at Hoylake. He put that twoiron in the bag and played it properly. Rory knows all about links golf and there is no reason why he can’t go on to win the Open now. I only hope that I’m in the field to witness that and hopefully take him on. I need a top-five finish in France to get there or the same in Scotland if I don’t qualify in Paris. So I’ll be doing my best.

n the course of nearly 15 years, Tiger Woods racked up a CV that few in golf history could rival: 71 PGA Tour wins; 14 professional majors; PGA Tour Player of the Year in all but two seasons. Until 2010, he had missed in just five PGA Tour events – two of them being majors and one after the death of his father and best friend. Woods racked up millions in on-course earnings and multiple times more off of it. His career earnings tally is $30 million higher than the Vijay Singh, who is the next best on the list. For all intents and purposes, Tiger Woods was golf. With a reputation like that – not the one that has developed since Y.E. Yang beat him in the ’09 PGA Championship — Tiger devoured an entire generation of players. Now that his career oscillates between different forms of frustration, be they injury, malfunction or otherwise, the peers he soundly hammered do not know how to act. There were probably a dozen guys in the last decade-and-a-half that had the cursed label “the next Tiger Woods.” None of them turned out that way. And now Woods is not winning. He hasn’t won in nearly two years. Woods very well could have been watching Rory McIlroy from the

bench in Orlando, Fla. But while he was not at Congressional, his presence continues to be felt by a generation of young PGA Tour players who have been charged with taking up the mantle for the American style of golf. With apologies to the Golf Boys for lumping three-fourths of them into the conversation, Tiger not only decimated a generation of his peers with his play, but he is suffocating the current crop of young American players that are expected to live up to his standard. From the time these guys in their 20s have been spotted by someone in the game, the pressure mounts in this country on them to usurp Tiger. There is little patience for these kids to win. They have to do so now, or yesterday, because every day that is crossed out on the calendar is another that pulls them further from Woods’ torrid and unrealistic pace. So here we are. Americans haven’t won in the past five majors and seven of the past ten. Someone has to step up, but they may be years behind. Maybe that’s why guys like Patrick Cantlay figure they can wait to take the leap. They want to make the jump when the predator is gone – or at least unable to fight any longer.

Banyan Golf Club, Hua Hin

“One of the World’s Top Golf Courses”

by ROLEX

T

he first edition took 3-years to complete by the legendary Swiss watchmaker Rolex and golf publisher D’Algue Selection who have produced a unique and independent guide that determines the world’s top 1000 golf courses. Banyan Golf Club, Hua Hin in Thailand is clearly commended in this compilation for it’s all round rating of excellence. For the first time ever, courses from every golfing continent have been critically reviewed to select the very best - by recognized experts for golfers. Each course entry features a wealth of descriptive information on all aspects of every course is given, from its architectural brilliance and the particular challenges of how the course is played to seminal moments from its history. ‘’The Rolex World’s Top 1000 Golf Courses’’ is an essential companion that not only recommends the best fairways and golfing experiences, but with listings for points of interest, it gives the discerning golfer everything they need to know before playing the course. Whether it’s planning an international golf trip or simply seeking

T

a great course near home, this is the perfect guide so don’t miss the opportunity to include Banyan Golf Club, Hua Hin on your next golf tour to Thailand. Stacey Walton comments “Europe’s Top 1000 Golf Courses by Rolex has always been the definitive guide for serious golfers and has been in existence since 1995. It is great that they have now taken to the World stage to acknowledge the best and am proud to experience that Banyan Golf Club, Hua Hin has been featured in the first edition. You’ll find the framed certificate in our Mulligan’s Pub on your next visit”.

he Banyan Golf Club Hua Hin recent held it’s inaugural Club Championship for members of the Club. The event was played on Sunday June 5th at the course, and the management had set the course up firm, but fair for all participants. Many players were playing from the Blue Tees for the first time, and they all experienced the true challenge which the golf course can present. The grounds team had the green running at 11 feet on the stimp meter, and most players really enjoyed the challenge. The wind on the day kept the golfers thinking about club selection whilst also keeping them cool in the warm humid afternoon. Prizes were awarded for the top 3 best Nett scores, but the overall Club Champions (Men’s & ladies) were awarded for best Gross scores. The trophies will be on permanent display

at Mulligan’s Pub and the Club Champions name will be added to the Champions “Wall of Fame”. Announcing the overall winners, Banyan Golf Club General Manager. Stacey Walton commented, “It’s great to be finally running our first ever Club Championship here at Banyan. We hope to grow this event over the coming years into our members preferred event. We will try to ensure that the event is run at a time when the majority of our Club members are preset so they can all aspire to having their names on the trophy and on the wall of Mulligan’s. Thank you to those who participated, and we look forward to seeing you back to challenge for the title again next year.” Banyan Golf Club Champions 2011; Ladies: Yu-Kuei Rothfuch Men’s: Steve Brighton

Mitsuoka Motors Japan

Unusual Cars from Mitsuoka Motors Japan Anyone ever heard of Mitsuoka Motors?

I

At Market Village, Hua Hin Today discovered a series of curious super cars from Japan

n Japan we can find many strange looking customized cars. Mitsuoka Motors is famous for creating such unusual cars with their slogan ‘A small factory with a big dream’. Mitsuoka Orochi is one of them which is named after a Japanese mythological eight headed snake. Orochi is Japan’s only super car. This model was first created in 2001 and recently updated for 2007. Mitsuoka will started to manufacture this super car in 2008. The weird geniuses at Japan’s Mitsuoka Motors showed off the radical Orochi concept, based on the Acura (Honda) NSX, appearing to be the result of a botched George Barris experiment involving a late-model Mercedes-Benz SL, a Lamborghini Murci lago and five or more hits of brown acid. This year, the company unveiled a spider version of the Orochi, literally “nude top,” in Tokyo this week. We’re not sure if it still rides on the underpinnings of the discontinued NSX, but it sure is, er, something. The eight headed monster on wheels will be priced at around 89,000 US dollars!!

KIDS & EDUCATION

Encouraging Creativity

Volume 8 issue 9 July 2011

in Early Childhood Classrooms A

dults are often amazed by young children’s unexpected perceptions of the world and the unique ways in which they express their imagination. We also know, however, that children usually need adult support to find the means and the confidence to bring forth their ideas and offer them, day after day, to teachers, parents, and friends. This digest considers both teacher-initiated and child-initiated strategies for enhancing young children’s self-expression and creativity. While trying to explore new and better ways of bringing the arts to young children and children to the arts, it helps to examine not only what American teachers do but also what teachers in other nations have discovered. Models developed in other countries, such as in the preschools of Reggio Emilia, Italy, can be a universal resource. 1. Young children are developmentally capable of classroom experiences which call for (and practice) higher level thinking skills, including ANALYSIS (breaking down material into component parts to understand the structure, seeing similarities and differences); SYNTHESIS (putting parts together to form a new whole,

rearranging, reorganizing); and EVALUATION (judging the value of material based on definite criteria). 2. Young children want and need to express ideas and messages through many different expressive avenues and symbolic media. Young children form mental images, represent their ideas, and communicate with the world in a combination of ways. They need increasing

competence and integration across formats including words, gestures, drawings, paintings, sculpture, construction, music, dramatic play, movement, and dance. Through sharing and gaining others’ perspectives, and then revisiting and revising their work, children move to new levels of awareness. Teachers act as guides, careful not to impose adult ideas and beliefs upon the children. 3. Young children learn through meaningful activities in which different subject areas are integrated. Open-ended discussions and longterm activities bring together whole-language activities, science, social studies, dramatic play, and artistic creation. Activities that are meaningful and relevant to the child’s life experiences provide opportunities to teach across the curriculum and assist children in seeing the interrelationships of things they are learning. Teachers have many opportunities to integrate curriculum. For example, the arrival of a new sibling is a common occurrence. Teachers might ask parents of children in their class to contribute photographs of the children as infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, so that the children who are interested can make scrapbooks. If such photos are unavailable, the children can draw or cut pictures from magazines, or dictate stories about remembered foods, toys, or bedroom furnishings. Such activities, designed to help a child deal with a new baby, also help children to use spoken and written language and to select and organize materials. 4. Young children benefit from in-depth exploration and long-term, open-ended projects which are started either from a chance event, a problem posed by one or more children, or an experience planned and led in a flexible way by teachers (Edwards & Springate, 1993; Clark, 1994). The adults act as resource persons, problem-posers, guides, and partners to the children in the process of discovery and investigation. They take their cues from children through careful listening and observation, and know when to encourage risktaking and when to refrain from interfering. WHAT TEACHERS CAN DO

Given what is known about young children’s learning and about their amazing competence to express their visions of themselves and their world, how can the classroom be modified to best support children’s emerging creativity? TIME. Creativity does not follow the clock. Children need extended, unhurried time to explore and do their best work. They should not be artificially rotated, that is, asked to move to a different learning center or activity when they are still productively engaged and motivated by a piece of creative work. • SPACE Children need a place to leave unfinished work to continue the next day, and a space that inspires them to do their best work. A barren, drab environment is not conducive to creative work. Rather, children’s work is fostered by a space that has natural light, harmonious colors, comfortable and child-sized areas, examples of their own and others’ work (not only their classmates, but as appropriate, also their teachers’ and selected adult artists), and inviting materials. • MATERIALS Without spending great amounts of money, teachers can organize wonderful collections of resource materials that might be bought, found, or recycled. These materials can include paper goods of all kinds; writing and drawing tools; materials for constructions and collages, such as buttons, stones, shells, beads, and seeds; and sculpting materials, such as play dough, goop, clay, and shaving cream. These materials are used most productively and imaginatively by children when they themselves have helped select, organize, sort, and arrange them. • CLIMATE The classroom atmosphere should reflect the adults’ encouragement and acceptance of mistakes, risk-taking, innovation, and uniqueness, along with a certain amount of mess, noise, and freedom. This is not a matter of chaos, or of tight control, but instead something in between. In order to create such a climate, teachers must give themselves permission to try artistic activity themselves, even when they have not been so fortunate as to have had formal art training or to feel they are naturally “good at art.” Through workshops, adult education classes, or teamwork with an art teacher or parent, classroom teachers can gain the confidence for, and experience the pleasure of, venturing some distance down the road of self-expression in a medium in which they

did not know they could be successful. Their skill will then translate into the work with the children. • OCCASIONS Children’s best and most exciting work involves an intense or arousing encounter between themselves and their inner or outer world. Teachers provide the occasions for these adventures. Children find it hard to be creative without any concrete inspiration. Instead, they prefer to draw on the direct evidence of their senses or memories. These memories can become more vivid and accessible through the teacher’s provocations and preparations. For example, teachers can encourage children to represent their knowledge and ideas before and after they have watched an absorbing show, taken a field trip, or observed and discussed an interesting plant or animal brought into class. Teachers can put up a mirror or photos of the children in the art area, so children can study their faces as they draw their self-portrait. Teachers can offer children the opportunity to check what they have drawn against an original model and then let them revise and improve upon their first representation. CONCLUSION All of these activities can be combined with the teachers’ goals of gradually introducing children to new art materials and techniques. Finally, there is no “one right way” for helping young children achieve their creative potential. Teachers will need to continue to experiment and test alternatives to see what is effective in their situation. Source: ERIC Clearinghouse on Elementary and Early Childhood Education Urbana IL.

Hua Hin Ballet Dance Academy

Offers excellent dance education for students from beginners through professionals

H

ua Hin Ballet Dance Academy has produced many talented young dancers for generating. The school offers dancers in Ballet, Jazz , Spanish Dance , Contemporary Dance , Hip Hop and Stretching Class. Ballet follows the Royal Academy of Dance, London (R.A.D) syllabus and offers ballet examination each year. 1. Children Syllabus - Starts from Pre-Primary age 4 year old up to grade 1 – grade 8 2. Major Syllabus - is a professional course starts from age 11. The Syllabus starts from Intermediate Foundation – Intermediate Advanced Foundation - Advanced 1 - Advanced 2 3. Special Examination (Solo Seal)

Solo Seal Examination is a special exam for the most outstanding students who has passed their Advanced 2 Exam with the most distinguished result distinction. Aree School has, at the present, teaching in all levels, and has entered students for Solo Seal Examination with the successful results. 4. Open Class Hua Hin Ballet Dance Academy also offers ballet classes for experiential dancers both trained R.A.D. and non R.A.D. method. ours The Hua Hin Ballet Dance Academy is wellknown for its Genuine Jazz dance style. Students will learn basic vocabularies of Jazz that are used in Jazz classes around the world. As the technique is developed, the students will gradually learn the different styles of Jazz such as real jazz, Broadway, Latin, lyrical and street Jazz. The classes are divided into 5 levels. Jazz 1 – Jazz 5 The School also offers Hip Hop classes for enjoyment and fun. cle Ballet is beneficial to children in many ways. First of all, they will learn one of the oldest art form that has been passed on from generations. Ballet

also strengthens the body especially the abdominal and the muscles of the legs which creates graceful movement and good control of balance. The aerobics aspect of ballet enhances the better working of blood circulation and of the lungs. Ballet is also another way for children to be familiar with classical music, which, in the present time, they have very little contact with. Apart from gaining more physical skill, children who are well-taught will possess good manner and discipline since ballet requires strong discipline of body and concentration of the mind. Ballet is the most interesting hobby for children since it is art as well as sports. Ordinary children will attend once or twice a week lessons while the more serious training will require more classes per week. Selecting a good school and teacher is the most

important step to start learning ballet. Since ballet is an art that personally transferred from one person to another, selecting a good teacher with advanced knowledge of ballet, good personality, good taste and articulate verbally will be the first choice to look for. Although not many children will grow up into the professional ballet career, children with ballet background will progress more physical ability, ready to take part in social activities with confidence. They are usually selected to participate or represent their schools or higher institute. These children will grow up with interests in many other forms of arts, with deeper understanding of their own culture as well as the others. Their regular exercise habit since childhood will also establish the health conscious which in many cases, lead to the love of exercising all through their adult lives.

Criminal Law in Thailand Part IV Getting Arrested—What the Police can do

by James Finch and Nilobon Tangprasit of Chavalit, Finch & Partners, Ltd.

L

ast month we began our discussion of the force the police in Thailand can use to make an arrest. We’ll continue this below, because it’s intended to help you understand what may or may not happen in connection with a police emergency in your life.

As with last month, let’s assume the police have a warrant to arrest Mr. X. They go to his house, Mr. X’s wife lets them in but inside Mr. X resists arrest. Can they use force to arrest him? Yes, but it must be suitable force. If Mr. X, for example, shoves the arresting officer and refuses to let the officer near him. The officer could forcibly handcuff Mr. X or grab him and force him into a police car. What, however, if Mr. X happens to be an unarmed person confined to

wheelchair and the officer happens to be on his first arrest? Mr. X shakes his fist menacingly at the officer, who panics, pulls a gun and shoots Mr. X, seriously wounding him. If the police officer unreasonably shot Mr. X in the above circumstances, Mr. X would have a civil claim against the police officer, in other words be able to sue the police officer for damages. Also, the police officer might be exposed to criminal penalties under section 157 of the Thai Criminal Code, for wrongfully exercising his or her official functions. Now let’s change the facts. Suppose Mr. X isn’t in a wheelchair and is young and able-bodied. There are two arresting officers. When they go in the house, Mr. X pulls a gun and shoots the first one, leaving him on the floor. Mr. X then, turns around to point his gun at the second officer, who shoots him before he shoots her. Would the second officer be justified in using this deadly force? It is likely that the officer would be considered justified in shooting Mr. X in this case. In practice not in theory, the Thai legal system takes particular note of the kinds of weapons used in the enforcement. If the weapon used by the perpetrator is the same or more deadly than that used by the officer, the officer is usually considered justified in using it. In this case, for example, both Mr. X and the officer had guns, and a court would probably consider the officer justified in shooting Mr. X. But what if Mr. X had not had a gun but instead knocked the first officer unconscious

with a lamp that had been sitting nearby in the room. Then Mr. X came toward the other officer, brandishing the lamp and she shot him? With this situation there is a real discrepancy in the dangerousness of the weapons used. It is more likely that the officer could have used other means to arrest Mr. X, for example, withdrawing and calling for backup rather than shooting Mr. X then and there. For one thing the likelihood the officer could avoid death or serious injury from a lamp is a lot more than if Mr. X had been using a gun. The case is a complicated one, though. What about the first officer lying unconscious on the floor? Doesn’t the second officer have to protect the first one? All of these factors would be taken into account by a judge in deciding if the second officer overstepped her authority by shooting Mr. X. It should be emphasized that a judge has wide discretion when it comes to deciding whether force used by a police officer in the course of an arrest is reasonable. May police officers handcuff someone they have arrested? In Thailand they may do so only if it’s to protect against likely violence or flight. Thus, in the case of white collar crime or a small infraction such as illegal gambling where there is little threat of violence or that the perpetrator will try to flee, this would not be allowed. In particular, the Thai Supreme Court has fairly recently decided that an arrestee cannot be handcuffed for the purpose of embarrassing him or her. As you’re probably aware, in some countries, whenever one is arrested, one is handcuffed. This leads to what is called the “perp walk,” (“perp” for “perpetrator”) where one arrested

for a minor regulatory offense is led by police from his or her home in cuffs, just as they might lead an arrested mass-murderer or gangster. The “perp walk,” particularly if shown on the evening news, is humiliating and often used by prosecutorial authorities in other countries to create an atmosphere in which the defendant is eager to make a deal with the authorities. For a minor crime in which the defendant was not a risk of violence or flight Thai law would not allow the defendant to be cuffed in this manner. * Chavalit Finch & Partners, Ltd. are lawyers specializing in real estate and business transactions. The Water Spa by Amana Spa at Dhevan Dara Resort

P

ractically built in a big pond, the Salas form The Water Spa. Watch your step, unless you want to have an algae water treatment before your actual package. The water Spa is located within the Dhevan Dara Resort on the road to Pala U just west of the By Pass highway, 500 meters from the newly built round about. The entire resort is built of like a tribe village with thatchroofs and adobe huts. Needless to mention that all is quite luxurious and comfortable. A bit remote but populated during weekends by Bangkokians and Japanese, HongKongians and Koreans through travel agents. Also a favourite resort of Skandinavians. So it must be good! The Spa reception, by Khun Yim was very friendly. Yim explained al the packages, especially tailored for aging men, 80% of Hua Hin farang men population! So what do we vintage luxury bodies want. Get rid of wrinkles,

get rid of fat, get rid of brown spots on our hands and face. Feel younger, fresher……it is all in “A Secret of Rejuvenation”. A famous person once said: “Let the beauty of what you love be what you do”. At the Water Spa, they can freshen you up like no where else. However make sure you tell them if you have any allergies, diseases, hypertensions or broken muscles. I asked for a recommendation. After carefully analyzing my present state of body and mind, Yim recommended a Golden Lightening Bady scrub which nourishes and revitalizes your skin by removing dry and chapped skin in return for a smooth and moisturized surface. The scrub is worked in gently as the Golden hands of my therapist Khun Fong lid along my 1.86m. long body. After this invigorating exercise, I showered and had to lay for 30 minutes in a mineralized warm water bath garnished with flowers and made me feel like Julius Ceasar in Roman times. After that, Fon invited me to the Sala Massage Table where I glazed through the face hole staring at a bowl of white beach sand and some shells arranged in a circle. Thinking about this, plus the massage made me fall asleep, woken up by a gentle “please turn around Khun Jerry” . The Golden Aromatic Massage with Natural Coconut and Pure Gold was now due. This Swedish massage is gentle and thorough and takes about 1 hour. I tried to scrape the Gold of my

body before I took a shower after the treatment, in view of the currency disaster facing us in the near future but Fon advised me to leave it on as the Coconut oil is good for your skin and the Gold makes you shine. There are several packages from which to choose with promotional prices that are very reasonable and worth every satang. There are even early bird discounts if you book a treatment from 10:00 am till 13:00. Couples get Hot Deals with a 40% discount. There is a couples package with Cookies & Tea served at your mineral bath. The Water Spa Village was a special experience for this experienced Spa reviewer and definitely

recommendable. I would give it a 5 Star rating anytime. Great Team, professional Therapies and feeling a lot rejuvenated after the session. Thank you so much Khun Yim and Khun Fon. Hilton Hua Hin Resort & Spa H

ilton resorts hold an international reputation for excellence. The mere mention of the name typically evokes instant approval and prestige. From its central, landmark status in town, the Hilton Hua Hin Resort & Spa embodies every connotation of the name. The Hilton Hua Hin Resort & Spa, 33 Naresdamri Road, facilities dominate the majority of tourist pastimes as they offer nearly every conceivable vacation recreations of cafes, cocktail bars, beer gardens, adventure clubs, multiple restaurants, and shopping facilities. It should come as no surprise that the Hilton Hua Hin Spa operates with the same level of excellence and iconic class.

“Our guests come to be reenergized. They handle a lot of pressure in their jobs and come looking for detoxifying treatments,” said Somsak. “We like to say ‘putting back a little of what life takes out’.” It’s relatively unclear where the spa is located on the vast resort grounds. After a simple inquiry at the front desk, I was led past the elevators in the direction of the pool and whisked up the impressive staircase to the spa. The Hilton Spa foyer is a geometric masterpiece that combines modern elegance with traditional Khmer architecture. The uncomplicated design is welcoming and encourages instant relaxation with the careful use of sleek cherry wood floors, artful vases and general cozy lodge

“We use Thalgo because our resort is near the sea and people can respond to the natural sea elements in the products,” Somsak said. Guinot, however, takes a more clinical approach to skin treatments by implementing a consultation and skin care team to ensure each guest has chosen the appropriate and most effective treatments to accomplish their beauty goals. The brand claims to improve everything from dry, dull skin, adult acne to facial sagging and

The extensive Hilton Spa, open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., boasts a list of spa treatments that could keep any tourist high on therapeutic pleasure for an entire week. However, for those who come to Hua Hin in search of more serious clinical skin remedies, the countless professional procedures offered make the spa seem more like a visit to the dermatologist’s office. According to Wilailuck Somsak, Spa & Recreations Manager, the goals of the Hilton Spa go beyond basic relaxation. She said guests choose the Hilton Spa because they want to go home feeling and looking younger, more relaxed and completely rejuvenated.

feel. The spa also offers aesthetic values as the foyer overlooks the entire beachfront and pool/ garden resort area. The spa uses two internationally renowned dermatological brands, Guinot and Thalgo. Each brand offers a range of rejuvenation treatments, and at-home products for sale at the spa. Somsak said all spa employees have been professionally trained to use both systems. Somsak said the Thalgo brand operates under the philosophy that when people come into contact with the specific natural elements needed, they can enhance their body’s healing capabilities.

wrinkles through skin brightening, firming and lifting products. On the day of my visit, I was treated to one of Guinot’s signature Hydradermie Purifying Treatments, where oxygen is pumped into each pore to brighten skin, clear blemishes and tighten pores. I was invited into one of the spa’s seven treatment rooms, which was decorated with calming yellow and soft gold fabrics, earthy stone slabs, rich brown woods and exotic amber lighting that made the space feel like a palace retreat. The hour long procedure included a series of

cleanses, scrubs, toners, lotions and a very relaxing facial massage with the electronic Guinot machine that administers the treatment from a cool, smooth ball-bearing wand. As the final stage soaked into my pores, the skin therapist massaged my feet, legs and head. While it was certainly not the typical body massage, having a professional pay that much delicately applied attention to my face was therapy of a different caliber. The Guinot procedures are typically designed for middle-aged clients who exhibit more severe skin issues, but Somsak said younger clients could also benefit from the treatments when applied with less concentration. She said Guinto is especially popular among the resort’s Scandinavian guests, who are familiar and comfortable with their trendy skin treatments. “For some clients, we do only the left side and then let them see the difference. Once they try it once and see the results, they keep coming back,” said Somsak. The Hilton Spa also features six signature massages, body scrubs and wraps, manicure and pedicure, hair salon services, and a variety of aromatherapy bath options, Somsak said. The unforgettably unique Hilton Hua Hin Spa offers an opportunity to experience a holistic approach to world of beauty treatments, and with the level of professionalism and hospitality the staff exhibits in every graceful movement, its no wonder the Hilton Hua Hin Spa remains in a class of its own.

V Villas Hua Hin

transports wine-lovers to California at monthly wine tasting dinner T

By Ashbess

hailand has never been known as a country filled with wine aficionados. However, Hua Hin has gained a reputation for its fusion of multicultural influences on cuisine and entertainment. In celebration of this European-inspiration, V Villas Hua Hin now offers a monthly Wine Tasting Dinner at the resort’s poolside restaurant, Villazzo. Each month on the third Saturday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., local and visiting wine-lovers can gather at the chic oceanfront Villazzo Restaurant, 63/39 Petchkasem Road, to sip imported wines, sample the fusion cuisine and enjoy live music from local musicians. This month, the featured wine region was California. For the price of THB 750 each, guests were offered a selection of five wines from different vineyards through out California wine country.

According to Seksit “Bird” Sritha, V Villas Hua Hin Food and Beverage Manager, Villazzo events are very popular among young Bangkok vacationers, who account for the majority of the resort’s guests. “We have a lot of functions and clubs come here. It’s like a new thing to do, because we offer the very best wines in the world. That’s difficult to find in Hua Hin,” Sritha said. Smartly dressed guests trickled into Villazzo as sounds of sizzling woks, clinking glasses and the rush of forceful waves crashing on the beach rang through the venue. By 6 p.m. the electric chandeliers were lit, the jazz musicians had begun to play, and the gleaming array of appetizers were perfectly displayed, signaling the start of a delicious evening. Each month, Sritha said Villazzo coordinates with the VIE Hotel in Bangkok to select the featured wine region. In the past, Sritha said the featured wines have come from France, Chile, Germany, Spain and Australia. At the mention of a wine tasting dinner, I expected a cohesive, semi-educational dining experience. I imagined a long table, white linens and witty conversations with the friendly new dinner companions. Most importantly, I hoped for a guided journey through the featured wine region, the wine selection and food pairings. However, without reading the

‘Wine Tasting Dinner,’ sign at the entrance of the restaurant, I would have thought the scene was simply a typical Saturday night dinner crowd. Villazzo instead offers an intimate and casual take on the traditional wine tasting. The mix of Hua Hin socialites and V Villas guests were scattered around the poolside and restaurant areas, each tucked into their own private corners and conversations. Any outer-circle interactions were fleeting conversations while deciding between vegetable samosas and tuna canapés. My expectations were slightly discontented. Had I come with hopes of sharing several bottles of wine and a gourmet buffet dinner with a group of close friends after a long week of work, I would have filed the entire experience under, ‘Best Nights in Hua Hin.’ The level of sophistication that is so easily associated with V Villas Hua Hin was present the entire night. The music was interactive, and the wine was satisfying. The buffet included a playful display of Thai-style barbeque, a createyour-own pasta station, a typical but expertly executed appetizer selection, and a variety of fresh fruits and desserts. Both food and wine were surprisingly unlimited. If the goal of the evening were to make guests feel as if they had been transported to a seaside villa in California, I would have believed it by the 6th and 7th glass of wine. Sritha said it is best to make a dinner reservation several days in advance, especially if planning a large group celebration. However, spontaneous walk-ins will not be turned away.

“It’s not always full, a good night is 20 to 15 people, mainly hotel guests, but we also have a small group from Hua Hin wine association,” said Sritha. Among those in attendance were Bangkok residents, Michael White and Ying LakPoolnak who recently chose V Villas Hua Hin as the location for their upcoming wedding. The betrothed couple said they were making wedding arrangements at the resort where they stumbled into the wine tasting dinner and decided to stay. “The evening has been fantastic. The wine is good. The food is excellent and the band is really hitting the spot right now,” said White. Even though the intended star of the night was the California wine, the most attention it received was a very brief debate over which varietal to try next. The evening was marked as a success and ended as fluidly as it began in a slow, familiar and relaxed style. The wine-lovers disappeared into the night as tannins of California grapes still lingered on their lips.

fail to keep you coming back. Nonetheless, the cool and classy setting definitely isn’t the only strong point of Deep Ocean. Deep Ocean serves well-prepared Thai and European dishes, however emphasizes on fusion food of their own style. I’m impressed with their careful selection of interesting dishes on the menu. They are those items that you can stop, stare and think about it for a while, not just hopelessly flipping through the menu pages because there’re only the same boring dishes. It’s just obvious that everything is very well prepared from Deep Ocean’s kitchen. The quality of the ingredients, freshness, careful and beautiful presentation, it is no different from eating in any 5 star hotels. Don’t fail to ask for the house recommendation and try some. Nothing here can really disappoint. Throughout your meal, pleasant soft jazz music is played at a low and non-intrusive level. I think this is one of the reasons why most regular guests stay for hours. Moving to the next zone, you enter The Pirate, a cool and inviting bar that seems like a perfect place to hang out with friends. More from Page 38...... here are some fun facts that will help you see food from India in a different light altogether Traditional Indian food has only ONE main course. Instead of a number of courses, food is based around a single main dish (rice or bread) served with a collection of savoury side dishes. All Indian cooking is carried out in a variety of vegetable oils like sunflower oil, mustard oil, groundnut oil and coconut oil. Animal fat is never used in cooking. Indians use gur or jaggery instead of sugar. Known as ‘medicinal sugar’, this contains minerals, vitamins and iron. Thus, it is one of the most wholesome and healthy forms of sugar known to man. Ever wonder why the Indian curry is so spicy? Well, it’s stuffed with a lot of stuff like turmeric, chilly, garlic, ginger and mint which is good for you. Indian breads are a primary food in the daily menu of most Indians. The wide variety of grains and cereals grown in the country are used to make different kinds of breads. Basically they are made of finely milled flour and water. The bread is broiled, steamed, fried or cooked over direct heat. There are dry, moist, soft, and hard breads. So depending upon the ingredients and method of preparation, a variety of breads are made in India - Chapathi, Phulka, Roti, Paratha, Naan, Appam, Dosa, Pathiri, and many more. Sajed understood that a man´s way is through the stomach and the buttered chicken was soft, delicious and filled with spice flavours. Could eat it all day. The following curries were a diversity of each other but basically based on the spices menue. The Masala beef practically melted on your tongue. As a side dish I requested steamed rice or Yellow rice, latter one making the food more interesting. Indian food can be made spicier by adding pepper or chilli but that was not until the Brits, believe it or not, introduced pepper to India. Indians drink yoghurt, either salty or sweet. Funny enough the salty yoghurt is the most refreshing whereas the sweet one takes any spicy burn away. Running down the main menue, there would be a dozen or more different compositions of Chef Sajed to try but his BBQ chicken Kebab, grilled in his self made wood burning oven just rounded off the Indian food story at this cute restaurant. As I mentioned, I came for the food and the myths behind it. I was pleasantly surprised and will return to this oasis of spices. Contact: 032 536 432 More from Page 16...... The Casa Seaside Villa project in Cha-Am is located about 200 km south of Bangkok (2 hours by car) and 25 km north of Hua Hin, the famous seaside resort. Whereas Hua Hin has more facilities and a lot to offer for tourists (shopping, restaurants, entertainment...), ChaAm is appreciated for its quiet and laidback atmosphere, its 5m km long beach, and its wide range of restaurant and accommodations. Thai people visiting Cha-Am usually come from Bangkok for the weekend. So the beachfront is very quiet during the week, and gets more animated during the weekends and national holidays. Cha-Am is also ideal for western families, as there are a lot of activities for children and no bar scene like in Pattaya or Phuket. Expats and long term tourists in Cha-Am are mostly retirees from Northern Europe If you like to play golf, there are several world class courses with a short distance. Rayong The Casa Seaside Villa project by Hat Mae Rumphueng beach in Rayong is located approximately 180 kilometers from Bangkok. Rayong is another delightful seaside province on Thailand’s eastern Gulf coast. Most of Rayong Province is marked by mountains interspersed by flat plains and large tracts of fruit plantations and forests. However, the province is most well known for its pristine beaches stretching along its 100-kilometer coastline and its scenic waterfalls set amidst exotic surroundings. Aside from these natural attractions, Rayong produces an abundance of seafood products, such as shrimp paste, fish sauce, and dried seafood, and grows

You can also order the food and have it served here. You can catch live pop jazz music here every Saturday and Sunday if you wish. Deep Ocean and The Pirate are managed by three successful partners who have experiences in different fields. I must say their experiences are shown in every aspect of this latest success. So why don’t you try out Deep Ocean and The Pirate one of these days? The food is outstanding, the service attentive and skilled, and the ambiance ... well, there is nothing else like it. You get the best at a good price. All in all, the Deep Ocean is one of the most pleasant place to eat lunch or dinner or just to take a break from the hectic shopping in this area. THE SHERATON HUA HIN RESORT & SPA RECEIVES ANOTHER AWARD OF ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS T

he Sheraton Hua Hin Resort & Spa is pleased to announce that they have met the necessary requirements to achieve the Trevelife Bronze Award from The Travelife Collection, England, for environmental awareness. The Sheraton has been increasingly active in developing the hotel’s ‘green’ policies, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and enforcing environmental protection in all of their development strategies. The aim of Trevelife Bronze Award is to ensure and protect the natural environment, to look after local communities and to encourage respect of differing cultures. In order to achieve a Travelife Award, one must acquire a good result from the Travelife Audit; this involves a visit from their auditor, who will look at employment records and energy bills, interview staff members and inspect the property thoroughly to ensure excellent management of energy and water,

safe chemical usage and excellent community relations. There are three levels of award: Bronze; Businesses that have policies and procedures in place which actively reduce their environmental impact and treat people in a fair and respectful way. Silver; Going further than the Bronze, these businesses seek ways to provide extra benefit for the local community and environment. Gold; These businesses display a very high commitment to sustainability. They encourage others to get involved, constantly seek new opportunities for improvement, and actively communicate their progress to others. “In today’s competitive environment, clients are looking for value as well as quality and we are delighted to be recognized in a new level of “success” as becoming one of the first five stars hotels to gain awareness and responsibility of the environment” said Martin Raich, General Manager of Sheraton Hua Hin Resort & Spa.

Nepal is leveraging its tourism assets to turn its political revolution of 2005-2008 into an economic one in 2011. According to PATA, NepalTourism Year 2011 has so far seen foreign visitor arrivals by air increase by 18.4% to reach 168,958 for the first five months of the year. The country is nominally on target to reach its goal of one million visitors this year, a figure that includes both air arrivals and land-based visitors, mostly from India. The government is promoting tourism to bring a measure of prosperity and continued political stability in a country that ranks in the 20 poorest in the world. Unity is a challenge. The country has 28 million people, a poor transport infrastructure, 103 ethnic groups and 92 spoken languages. Twenty-two out of 75 local government districts aren’t linked to the capital by road. Representatives of the Nepal Tourism Board and the country’s hotels and tour operators last week told travel agents in Singapore, Johor Bahru and Bangkok that Nepal’s tourism industry needs low cost carriers such as Air Asia to start flying to Kathmandu. A tour operator at the Nepal event in Bangkok on June 16 noted that Southeast Asian tourists expect their holiday destinations to have political stability and competitively priced air tickets. Only 25,000 Thais visited Nepal in 2010, despite the close Buddhist pilgrimage links between the two countries. “It should be three-times that number,” said Sunil. Adventure tourism activities such as paragliding, flying in ultralites, white water rafting and mountain biking are now being heavily promoted, especially in Pokhara, the adventure capital of Nepal. The aim is to attract younger urban residents in big Southeast Asian cites who want an adrenalin fix in a wild ‘back to nature’ setting. On the other side of the coin, gambling is available in seven hotels in Kathmandu. Nepal Airlines, THAI, Silk Air and Dragon Air offer a total of 25 flights a week into Nepal
