Asia’s top sailors

turn attention to 2011 P

Top of the Gulf Regatta

ATTAYA – Anticipation in the sailing world is building as the Gulf of Thailand prepares to welcome sailors from around the region to the 2011 Top of the Gulf Regatta (TOG Regatta). Set to take place 29 April – 3 May at Ocean Marina Yacht Club, Jomtien Beach, Pattaya, the TOG Regatta incorporates the one-design Platu Coronation Cup and Thailand Optimist Nationals.

Hot on the heels of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, Royal Langkawi International Regatta and Singapore Straits Regattas, keel boat and multihull sailors from around the region are eying this, the penultimate event of the Asian Yachting Grand Prix Championship, as the ‘one to win’. “The 2010 Regatta was a great success. We welcomed big fleets of all kinds of boats to the Gulf of Thailand. Planning for the 2011 event is well underway and we are looking forward to another great year. With strong support from Host Sponsor Ocean Marina Yacht Club, we are expecting to further increase the number of participants in 2011,” said William Gasson, Regatta founder and Chairman of the Organising Committee.

The 2010 TOG Regatta saw a record ‘big boat’ fleet with 51 keelboats and multihulls taking part. Second only in size to the big boat fleet of the 25-year old Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, the TOG Regatta saw over 120 Optimists, dinghies and beach catamarans also take part in 2010, actually making it the largest sailing event in Thailand.

We are warned to save water these days. Good thing and, but however, what happened to the overloads of water that fell down last season? Time to dig some more reservoirs? They don’t do it to locals, so why to expats? There are many living off a retirement income and limited, often outpatient, insurance which makes them pay in cash for any ambulant medical treatment and medication. A call on a doctor at one of the Hua Hin Hospitals with a common cold can set you back more than 2000 Baht if you can avoid any suggested X-rays. I was criticised by a Hua Hin resident for claiming that you could get a plate of Pasta with a glass of red wine for less than 200 Baht. Well you can, at Bella Mia, Soi 94. The resident got quite nasty about this, but than again . We all agree, the CD generation has not really given us some great product. I played some old tapes on my dad´s Phillips stereo tape recorder and dumped it on my modern Stereo system. It sounded great. The old Herp Alpert trumpet solos, Charli Antolini on the drums, Simon and Garfunkel, Neil Diamond. The sound was great, no deterioration, no interruptions. My compact cassettes, run great with a Dolby noise filter, even the more vulnerable thinner metal tapes, run great. With CD´s, we often couldn´t finish a movie, much to our frustration. Some discs actually corrode from in between the layers. We decided to buy a few USB sticks with solid state memory banks and record our music and movies there. Hard drives? Not until we get some good solid state 300GB upwards for a reasonable

ith an earlier announced floating market project, a second Mall, a green Hotel, Property Sales growing, Visitors numbers increasing, a new hospital and the Municipality creating main connecting roads to the bypass highway, any doubts of Hua Hin being properly put on the map? This progress goes parallel with ever increasing traffic jams, congested city, no parking spaces. Where are the announced parking alternatives and policies? It is all as it was. I wonder or don’t I wonder? Every start is not necessarily as smooth as one expects,. At the new hospital, expectations were sky-high. However minor mistakes were made and will be made as professionals adjust to their new environments. However 2, it goes observed that medical advise is closely connected to up selling medications and treatments! As I queried this, it was explained to me that it seems to be an Asian thing to get medicine regardless of the cause. So even if you are not ill, the doctor is expected to give you some tablets. Dutch people rely a bit more on their personal stamina to heal minor illness, Americans love pills and so on. Discuss with your doctor if you are not satisfied or do not understand why he or she wants your sinuses to be x- rayed. Some hospitals seem very eager to up sell and charge unreasonably just because you are insured. Some of us are unwilling and unable to participate in this rip off.

See if I got this right?

Hua Hin Up up in

the Air at the Balloon Festival

T

his upcoming summer in Hua Hin will never be the same as the city is organizing a balloon festival to promote its tourism during the high season. Initiated by the Rest Detail Hotel in Hua Hin in collaboration with the Stafford Edison Co. Ltd., the Classic Event Group, the Hua Hin Hill Vineyard Group and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the balloon festival features a skywards trip in hot air balloons at the Hua Hin Hill Vineyard. The trip, started at 7 a.m. and taking about 1 hour, allows 4-5 passengers in a balloon with an experienced balloonist. Up in the air, the passengers got to admire scenic landscape of the mountain ridge at the Hua Hin Hill Vineyard. The balloon took them to the south of the Hua Hin city for an international breakfast with live jazz. Then, the passengers could take pictures with the balloon and receive a certificate.

By Chamnan Puengjoh

The balloon trip is 15,000 baht for those who do not stay at the Rest Detail Hotel, 400 US Dollars for those who stay one night at the Hotel and 1,167 US Dollars for 2 persons who stay 2 nights at the Hotel. The Hua Hin balloon festival is taking place until 6 March to celebrate the upcoming summer holiday in Thailand. An innovative event of Hua Hin, the festival is originated in France by the balloonist and the vineyard owner. According to Mr. Chakri Rujirat, the General Manager of the Rest Detail Hotel, the balloon festival will certainly promote good images of Hua Hin in terms of tourism as the city will be the only one in Thailand that organizes this event. Once the festival is favored by visitors, local authorities of Hua Hin and hotel and guesthouses entrepreneurs should work together and promote it as one of the best choices for travelling to Hua Hin.

They should work with local people on promoting local tourist attractions, networking with local people and fostering local intellect. All the regulations were formulated by the Director of the Bureau of Volunteer Graduates Ms. Surasawadee Hunphayon. They should be strictly followed to standardize the quality of hotels and guesthouses in Hua Hin and prevent the earth from threatening global warming. According to the Director of the Bureau of Volunteer Graduates, the 3 regulations are well responded by both hotel entrepreneurs and local people in Hua Hin. In the future, the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion will expand the project throughout Thailand as a national environmental friendly campaign in which governmental, private organizations and civil society can work together.

Illustrious Anniversary Celebration at Coco 51

O

ne of our popular expat residents, Sven Vermelin celebrated his anniversary at Coco 51. Sven did not want to reveal his age at this point and guessing about it didn´t get us any further. Sven looks back on a successful career as a hotelier and CEO of a

large international Hotel group. Sven spend quite some time in Russia and it is whispered that he shook hand with Khun Putin on several occasions. Hua Hin has Sven in it´s ban as he plays quite a lot of golf to keep fit and lower his handicap. Sven celebrated with a small group of close friends and his ever lovely wife Ling a resident of Chendu China. The 5 course evening dinner in a romantic setting on this valentine´s day was delicious and perfectly balanced with the wines served. The Grilled Australian Beef Tenderloin melted on our tongues ! Rounding the dinner off with a Chocolate Mousse Cake ended this St. Valentine´s dinner and Birthday Party.

Can you really make money online fast?

Y

ou can make money online fast if you look in the right places. That is the catch that keeps most people who want to make money from doing so. Instead, they look at the wrong places and end up falling for frauds and schemes to just separate them from more of their money instead of letting them earn some. The best way to fall into fraud is to believe that you can make money fast online and get rich soon. Of course there are plenty of people who make a good living online doing various things. Whether through free lancing, Internet business, websites, marketing and other methods, many people earn their living completely online. It is legitimate to make

money online but it ain´t anything fast. A few people have gotten a lot of money online and scams love to refer to those and try to convince you to do the same. The people that became wealthy are in the minority. Yet many people fall prey to the scammers and frauds who claim they can make them rich fast but than just end up losing hundreds to thousands of whatever fast as well. You have to be practical to look for an income over the Internet. Be reasonable and don’t dream of millions which you won’t make anyway. Look for jobs and services which pay without you having to pay them upfront or paying to retrieve the information. Companies, for example, will pay you for surveys without you having to pay them. Filling out special offers by companies answering polls and giving them detailed information are also ways to make some money online. Take a close look at what is requested and how it is remunerated. Don’t fall for fraud with payments upfront or investments which then disappear into someone else’s bank account!

The two hotels will be located in Sukhumvit area, Bangkok’s main lifestyle, entertainment and residential area. Hilton Worldwide currently operates five hotels in Thailand: the newly opened Hilton Pattaya; Millennium Hilton Bangkok; Hilton Hua Hin Resort & Spa; Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa and Conrad Bangkok. Conrad Koh Samui is scheduled to open in June 2011, while Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok and DoubleTree by Hilton, Sukhumvit Bangkok are due for completion in 2012. Khun Panot Sirivadhanabhakdi, Senior Executive Vice President, said, “This collaboration with Hilton Worldwide will add depth and breadth to our hospitality portfolio. We will be able to bring other world-class hotel facilities and services, and the traditional reputation of Thai hospitality to business and leisure travelers in Bangkok. The Hilton Hotels & Resorts brand is an award-winning brand, and we are pleased to welcome the first DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Thailand. meters and meeting rooms totaling 697 square meters. The hotel will also have a fully-equipped business centre and an executive floor for the convenience of business travelers looking for enhanced services. DoubleTree by Hilton, Sukhumvit Bangkok The conversion involves a comprehensive multi-phase redesign and refurbishment which includes extensive upgrades in guest rooms, food and beverage outlets, conference facilities and public space. The hotel will reopen as DoubleTree by Hilton, Sukhumvit Bangkok in 2012. The 24-storey property will feature 182 modern guest rooms including 12 suites. Food and beverage outlets will comprise an all-day dining restaurant and a lounge. Leisure facilities will include an outdoor swimming pool and a fully-equipped, state-of-the-art fitness centre. The hotel’s meeting and event facilities will include a main conference room of 512 square meters, which can be divided into three meeting rooms, as well as a fully-equipped business centre. About TCC Hotel Group TCC Hotel Group is a member of the TCC Land Group, one of Thailand’s largest and most prominent conglomerates. Its core business is to develop and to invest in a wide range of real estate projects that include the residential, office buildings, hospitality, and retail sector. TCC Land’s expertise also extends to property and land management not only in Thailand but also in other potential markets across the world. The company has a strong determination to develop a new era of property development by incorporating the importance of creating a sustainable foundation for society that based on community happiness and a complete harmony with the environment into the planning of its projects.

Sansiri targets budget buyers

hailand’s second biggest property developer, Sansiri PLC, has set itself ambitious targets over the next 3 years in order to capture more of the low end property market. The company’s chief operating officer, Khun Wanchak Buranasiri recently announced new targets that will see revenue increase by 10% this year to eventually reach THB29 billion (US$947 m) in 2012 and then THB35 billion (US$1.1bn) by 2013. Wanchak said the revenue increases will come from 23 new projects, which include 12 townhouse and detached housing estates worth THB13 billion (US$424m) plus 3 condominiums projects with a total value of THB17 billion (US$555m). Until now, Sansiri has focused primarily on high-end residential projects, but reduced demand at this level prompted the company to shift its strategy to target middle- and low-

income buyers. New lower-income properties are generally condominiums priced from one million and and the company expects strong demand in this sector. In terms of the wider Thai property sector, Wanchak says the main challenges will be rises in the cost of construction materials, which are expected to go up by 1-3 per cent, while inflation may also cause a drop in buyer demand. However, he also maintains that the market will improve on last year’s performance thanks to the continued strength of the Thai economy Only 10 major players dominate the property market in Bangkok, and these account for some 70% of all residential projects. Mr Wanchak said he believes developers learned hard lessons during the 1997 financial crisis and that most companies now have strategies to cope with any issues of oversupply. Although some areas are showing signs of a surplus, he said, the situation is still controllable.

Significant rise in Asian Bangkok stock real estate investment of luxury condos to rise Andrew Batt R to 22,834 in 2011 eal estate investment in Asia picked up significantly in the second half of 2010 with Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and China the most active markets. These four markets alone accounted for more than US$29 billion of transactions in the period between July and December 2010, a massive 83 per cent of the total regional volume. The fourth quarter saw a slight slowdown in investment activity, with total transaction volume falling slightly to US$16.5 billion – compared to the US$18.5 billion recorded in the third quarter. The Asian real estate investment market

nevertheless ended 2010 on a strong note, with total transaction volume reaching US$62 billion, a surge of 59 per cent year-on-year, according to CB Richard Ellis’Asia Investment MarketView report for the second half of 2010. Real estate investment activity declined in most locations in the fourth quarter with the exception of China, Malaysia and Singapore, all of which posted positive quarter-on-quarter increases in transaction volume by increments of 60 per cent, 53 per cent and 31 per cent respectively. China was one of the first markets to recover in the present cycle and continues to be dominated by domestic corporations, while foreign institutional investors mostly disposed of investment properties in the country at a gain. Institutional investors have been shifting to other investment markets, with Singapore witnessing a record quarterly investment volume of more than US$5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2010, a total of 31 per cent of the

total regional volume for the period. Elsewhere in South East Asia, the Malaysian investment market received a boost from Starhill REIT’s acquisition of eight hospitality properties for a total of US$330 million. Cross border real estate investment activity continued to pick up in 2010, accounting for US$11 billion of total transaction volume, a huge increase of 96 per cent year-on-year but still well down on the 2007 peak of US$27 billion. Investment by non-Asian international investors also picked up markedly during the year, reaching an estimated US$4 billion, while investment activity by institutional investors and REOCs (Real Estate Operating Companies) also took off with total investment volume collectively reaching US$13 billion, a 74 per cent increase on the previous year. Investment activity by Asian REITs rose significantly in 2010 by 195 per cent to US$10.5 billion. Investor interest in the second half of 2010 remained focused on prime assets offering stable income streams generated from existing anchor tenants and providing growth over the longer term. The office sector attracted US$26 billion worth of transactions in the second half, 43 per cent of total investment volume, while investment in retail assets also picked up during the July – December period, accounting for US$7 billion or 21 per cent of total investment turnover. “Both foreign and domestic investors continued to be active in 2010. We expect that levels of activity will increase in 2011 as both foreign and domestic investors tap into the growing pool of capital looking to secure or increase its presence in Asia,” said Greg Penn, CB Richard Ellis’ Executive Director of Investment Properties for Asia. “The Asian real estate investment market enjoyed an encouraging end to the year and prices for prime investment property have now recovered substantially,” added Nick Axford, CB Richard Ellis’ Head of Research for Asia Pacific. “The market outlook remains generally optimistic and we expect further real estate investment and portfolio expansion from Asian pension funds, sovereign wealth funds and REITs across Asia’s mature and emerging markets in 2011.”

Jones Lang LaSalle Thailand (JLL) report says that a slew of high-end condominium projects will launch in Bangkok this year, bringing the total stock to 22,834. According to the company’s managing director Suphin Mechuchep, luxury condo developers are now more confident in both local and the world economies. Several projects postponed their launches last year due to political instability and a lack of confidence in economies. She said that the renewal of demand from overseas buyers would also help increase the number of high-end launches in 2011. According to JLL research, the newly launched condominium units in central Bangkok and priced around THB150,000

(US$4,860) psm were 1,180 last year, dropping from 2,300 in 2009. Newly completed units were down to 2,678 from 3,589 during the same period. The report also says that around 1,894 units in the high-end segment will be completed within this year, while the total stock of luxury condos will rise to 22,834 this year, from 20,940 units in 2010 and 18,262 in 2009. As reported in the Bangkok Post newspaper, average prices of new high-end projects are expected to increase at least 5 per cent due to a rise in land and construction costs. Last year, they dropped from THB162,000 (US$5,250) psm toTHB155,000 (US$5,020) when developers adjusted their products to fit demand at the time.

For the last five years, the town of Cha Am has been quietly concentrating on improving and expanding its infrastructure. As the town grows, so will the potential value of your Chaum Haus home. Inside, in the fresh and modern office, we meet the two owners, Khun Einar and Khun Fai. “The idea of establishing an advertising agency in Hua Hin, came when we were looking for professional help to produce a brochure” says Einar. “We asked around and we were told that we had to go to Bangkok”. “The agencies we found in Bangkok were expensive and we were not really impressed with what they showed us. Khun Fai is educated as a graphic designer and has worked with packaging design, branding projects and other kind of related communication tools. Myself I have my background from one of the big American advertising agencies. The decision of starting up our own advertising agency was easy. ” “I must say we have had very good response so far, even if we have been modest in our advertising” says Fai. “Most of our clients come from Scandinavia and we are very proud of what we have done for them. Hua Hin Police Inspector promoted to Bangkok Position

By Chamnan Puengjoh

T

hanks to his constant effort on tourism promotion and good work on crime suppression in collaboration with provincial police in Hua Hin throughout 2010, the Hua Hin Police Inspector is now looking forward to a promotion in Bangkok in February. Pol. Lt. Kuekkong Dissawat, the Police Inspector of Hua Hin, has worked with local police and tourist police for three years on monitoring tourist attractions in the city, such as beaches, archeological sites and providing a procession-leading car for cultural or traditional events. At night, he also patrolled several tourist spots, namely the Hua Hin night market, beach restaurants and night festivals. His colleagues and staff can speak English fluently, thus being able to solve problems, cases and misunderstanding among tourists, most of whom are from Europe and Scandinavia. In 2010, there was an incident that tainted the good image of Hua Hin – a murder of a foreign correspondent and two disabled foreigners. But Pol. Lt. Kuekkong, with cooperation of Hua Hin local police, was able to track down and arrest the wrongdoer for further prosecution. This work has impressed a lot of tourists in Hua Hin. “Hua Hin is the most famous holiday getaway for both Thais and foreigners due to its ideal location and atmosphere. A lot of events are organized each month. Although tourism in

Thailand was slow down in many parts of Thailand last year, Hua Hin’s was intact. And I believe that, with cooperation of local and private sectors, tourism in Hua Hin will remain good and may become better this year,” said Pol. Lt. Kuekkong. Having worked very hard for the betterment of Hua Hin, Pol. Lt. Kuekkong will be promoted as the Deputy Superintendent for the Tourist Police Office at the Suvanabhumi International Airport in Bangkok in February. Although he is leaving Hua Hin, his heart has already been given to the lovely beachfront city. The new Deputy Superintendent said he would support tourism in Hua Hin and would recommend it to visitors in Thailand.

T

he English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats and have therefore raised their security level from “Miffed” to “Peeved.” Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to “Irritated” or even “A Bit Cross.” The English have not been “A Bit Cross” since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from “Tiresome” to “A Bloody Nuisance.” The last time the British issued a “Bloody Nuisance” warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada. The Scots have raised their threat level from “Pissed Off” to “Let’s get the Bastards.” They don’t have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.. The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from “Run” to “Hide.” The only two higher levels in France are “Collaborate” and “Surrender.” The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France‘s white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country’s military capability. Italy has increased the alert level from

“Shout Loudly and Excitedly” to “Elaborate Military Posturing.” Two more levels remain: “Ineffective Combat Operations” and “Change Sides.” The Germans have increased their alert state from “Disdainful Arrogance” to “Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs.” They also have two higher levels: “Invade a Neighbor” and “Lose.” Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels . The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy. Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from “No worries” to “She’ll be alright, Mate.” Three more escalation levels remain: “Crikey!”, “I think we’ll need to cancel the barbie this weekend”, and “The barbie is canceled.” ........

Hua Hin Attractions

ost Thais see Hua Hin as a romantic Hua Hin Night Market and elegant get away holiday ituated in the centre of town between destination. This started off about 100 years the Petchkasem Road and the railway ago when Royal Family members and the line, the market encompasses one street and more privileged people would spend their summers there. As a result Hua Hin now has countless lovely seaside houses, apartments, villas and a few attractive vintage summer palaces. Hua Hin is usually full of people taking a break from Bangkok at weekends and it’s just a short drive away. Much of Hua Hin’s attraction lies in the town’s charming old-world feel, best illustrated in Hua Hin Railway Station and the Maruekhathaiyawan Palace.

This is by no means the best place to shop in Thailand; you will find a bigger variety of goods in Bangkok or say, Chiang Mai. W

e hear Spa all around us. Especially in Hua Hin, there seems to be a Spa on every second corner next to an Optical shop and a Tailor. Spa per definition is associated with water treatment which is also known as balneotherapy. Spa towns or Spa Resorts (including hot springs resorts) typically offer various health treatments. The belief in the curative powers of mineral waters goes back to prehistoric times. Such practices have been popular worldwide, but are especially widespread in Europe and Japan. Day spas are also quite popular, and offer various personal care treatments. The term is derived from the name of the town of Spa, Belgium, whose name is known back to Roman times, now a famous race track, when the location was called Aquae Spadanae, perhaps related to the Latin word “spargere” meaning to scatter, sprinkle or moisten. Since medieval times, illnesses caused by iron deficiency were treated by drinking chalybeate (ironbearing) spring water (in 1326, the ironmaster Collin le Loup claimed a cure, when the spring was called Espa, a Walloon word for “fountain”. In 16th century England, the old Roman ideas of medicinal bathing were revived at towns like Bath, and in 1571 William Slingsby who had been to the Belgian town (which he called Spaw) discovered a chalybeate spring in Yorkshire. He built an enclosed well at what became known as Harrogate, the first resort in England for drinking medicinal waters, then in 1596 Dr Timothy Bright called the resort The English Spaw, beginning the use of the word Spa as a generic description. A body treatment, spa treatment, or cosmetic treatment is non-medical procedure to help the health of the body. It is often performed at a resort, destination spa, day spa, beauty salon or school. Typical treatments include, among others: • Aromatherapy • Body wraps, wrapping the body in hot linens, plastic sheets and blankets, or mud wraps, often in combination with herbal compounds. • Facials, facial cleansing with a variety of products • Massage • Skin exfoliation, including chemical peels and microdermabrasion • Yoga and meditation & Waxing, the removal of body hair with hot wax Types of Spa • Ayurvedic spa, a spa in which all treatments and products are natural and it’s often used as alternative medicine. • Medical spa, a facility that operates under the fulltime, on-site supervision of a licensed health care professional whose primary purpose is to provide comprehensive medical and wellness care in an environment that integrates spa services, as well as traditional, complimentary and/or alternative therapies and treatments. The facility operates within the scope of practice of its staff, which can include both aesthetic/cosmetic and prevention/wellness procedures and services. These spas typically use balneotherapy, employing a variety of peloids. Mineral springs spa, a spa offering an on-site source of natural mineral, thermal or seawater used in hydrotherapy treatments. • Resort/Hotel Spa, a spa owned by and located within a resort or hotel providing professionally administered spa services, fitness and wellness components and spa cuisine menu choices.

Step Up and Let’s Dance! D

ance is known as an art form which refers to movements of the body. It has been used as a form of non-verbal expression and presented in a spiritual or performance setting. Dance has been a part of human culture for a very long time. In the old days, dance was an important part of ceremony, rituals and celebrations but nowadays dance is considered as a form of exercise or as a type of physical activity for healthy lifestyle. But do you know that “DANCE” itself has greater benefits than “just another way to have fun and to keep fit”? Dance keeps your brain active and promotes longevity and If you observe carefully most dancers seem to hold the secret of youthfulness. Dance is a powerful way to boost blood circulation to the brain and helps keep it active. When you add in a coordination exercise to music, such as learning a new dance step, it boosts the cerebellum and temporal lobes, which are two of the major processing and learning centers in the brain. Research has shown that most dancers and artists who have more Alpha brain waves suffer less tension and anxiety. The modern lifestyle and competition as well as daily pressures cause stress. This can suppress your immune system and diminishing your physical strength. You could train your brain to become familiar with Alpha waves and produce positive emotions. Alpha-type brain activity helps to produce a burst of creative inspiration, or revelation, in response to the demands of problem solving. For brain activity to result in inspirational ideas, the process needs to be able to produce a big burst of Alpha brain waves. This is a ‘left- brain’ activity. Dance trains your brain for the Alpha wave activity to produces positive emotions and positive imagery which will balance the pressure and stress you feel about obstacles in personal life and work. When you dance you increase the level of brain chemicals which encourage nerve cells to grow and dancing that requires you to remember dance steps and sequences boosts brain power by improving memory skills. Where there’s dance, there’s music. And music is said to influence the process of thinking and learning. Music also enhances your creativity as has positive effects on the right side of your brain. Music affects the brain’s center which is

By Sukkasart

responsible for creative development. When you dance, not only are you dancing to reclaim your brilliant ability to disappear into another world of your own and fall in love with the spirit in all things, you are nurturing yourself by letting both sides of your brain exercise. If you feel you are not a natural born dancing personality (but to my personal experience, everybody has got groove!), you really should come along and give it a go. I believe everything in the world has its own rhythm, therefore everything dances. Our life would be much more fulfilling if we spice it up with a bit of dance. There are various dance activities offered at Sukkasart Institute of Healing Arts. There are Creative Dance, Dancercise and Belly Dance lessons, all of which are unique and fun. Creative Dance is to explore your expressions and your body. You will experience fun and freedom with dance movements through rhythm of slow to mid tempo music. Creative Dance brings awareness to your body and you will gain sense of creative presence as well as imagination, coordination and concentration in order to flow with dance and basic movements. Dancercise energizes your body with rhythmic steps. It is a great workout with dance-based cardio. Dancercise is an excellent activity for people who want to work muscles throughout the entire body in order to improve body strength. Dancercise is dynamic and fast with simple dance steps. It is great for anyone with little to no dance background but love to move! Belly Dance is considered one of the oldest forms of dances in human history. The origins of belly dance can be traced to the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and Africa. Belly Dance movements are uniquely designed for the female body. It is firm and earthy, yet, smooth, flowing and sensual. Belly Dance improves your core muscles strength and posture as well as your confidence as a woman. Let’s take a break from the treadmills and the same old workout routines. Come dance with us at Sukkasart. Tapas Café – Hua Hin Spanish Tapas Bar and Restaurant in Hua Hin

ome of you may know the Tapas Café from Bangkok. More fortunate ones know the original ones from Spain. Every town in Spain has a Tapas situation. Larger towns have a tapa street where you actually move from one bar to another , taking a sip of red or white wine , you don’t get more and a Tapas, typical to that certain restaurant. Tapas is the name of a wide variety of appetizers, or snacks, in Spanish cuisine. They may be cold (such as mixed olives and cheese) or warm (such as chopitos, which are battered, fried baby squid). In select bars in Spain, as well as some parts of North America and the United Kingdom, Tapas has evolved into an entire, and sometimes sophisticated, cuisine. In Spain, patrons of tapas can order many different tapas and combine them to make a full meal. The serving of tapas is designed to encourage conversation because people are not so focused upon eating an entire meal that is set before them. Also, in Since opening in late 2006, Tapas Cafe is already proving a some countries it is customary for diners to stand and move popular alternative to the more familiar international pubs and about while eating tapas. restaurants. I discovered wines from the Garnacha vineyards and the upper level Marqués de Cáceres “Grand Reserva” at the cost of a taxi roundtrip to Bangkok. Unfortunately the beautiful wines are taxed extremely high making them quite unaffordable for hard working expats. The tapas I tried were a reflection from the ones I knew from Spain , carefully prepared and delicious. My favourite were shrimp ( Gambas) in a spicy garlic sauce. The Chorizo from black Iberian Pig was a great combination with a Spanish baguette and red wine. A real Spanish Pealla de Mariscos (Seafood Pealla) rounded off this lunch adventure. r. Mon has a culinary history in Hua Hin. A couple of years ago he worked at the Siam Restaurant , behind the Wat , downtown as a waiter. His wife as a cook. A bit later he moved on to Soi 116 where he managed a restaurant for an entrepeneurishing Farang with best of intentions. It all was so so for Khun Mon.

Upon the upgrading of Soi 112, he saw his chance and rented a place a stone throw away from the Seven Eleven store, heading west. The newly established Mr. Mon restaurant now is a most popular place among Farangs and Thai residents same same. The food selection on the menue suites everyone´s taste and the prices are very easonable. Mrs. Mon took over the kitchen and the dishes taste deliciously. Valencians, in turn, regard paella as one of their identifying symbols. There are three widely known types of paella: Valencian paella (Spanish: paella valenciana), seafood paella (Spanish: paella de marisco) and mixed paella (Spanish: paella mixta), but there are many others as well. Valencian paella consists of white rice, green vegetables, meat (rabbit, chicken, duck), land snails, beans and seasoning. Seafood paella replaces meat and snails with seafood and omits beans and green vegetables. Mixed paella is a free-style combination of meat, seafood, vegetables and sometimes beans. Most paella chefs use calasparra or bomba rices for this dish. Other key ingredients include saffron and olive oil. The Tapas Café Hua Hin is managed by lovely Khun Ruby. On an evening stroll down Naresdamri Road, Tapas Café is a must! See them on www.tapascafehuahin.com or simply call 032 531 062 for directions.

A Culinary journey through The Hilton Hua Hin

I

magine you could go on a culinary journey through the Hilton Hua Hin restaurants and pretend you are on a trip around the world. Starting of in the morning at breakfast you will find a wide choice of options from simple continental, to British and American more comprehensive dishes to a healthy Chinese congee breakfast, all under one roof. A French man may swear to his big cup of coffee or chocolate milk with a piece of croissant, a Dutchman will need his cheese toast and a Brit can´t do without his baked beans and Yorkshire pudding, bacon and potato chips and Americans want their juice, coffee, toast, ham & eggs, sunny side up. Germans are easier, they will eat anything… All at The Market. As you slowly recover from the Hilton Hua Hin Brewing Company last night, you may be relaxing at the pool,

starting to think of the next étappe to enjoy all Hilton food alternatives. At 10:00 you get restless as you need to check your email to which the world population has got so very addicted to. Well there is the World News Coffee, a few steps away, outside the lobby heading East on Naresdamri road. A coffee of your choice with plenty of food to choose from, like cakes, Bretzel, croissants, salads and warm sandwiches to enjoy. Getting back to the pool, your partner raises the question of Lunch. There is Chay Had for lunch with international dishes whilst enjoying a refreshing sea breeze, Gulf of Siam view and an ice cold beer, alternatively served at the pool. Should you prefer pasta, a wood fired pizza (best in town!) or Thai delicacies the right place is once again The Market. After lunch swim up to the Aqua Bar or enjoy some nice beats at the Sunset Beach Bar while having a New Zealand Ice Cream (around 10 different flavours are on offer) or another ice cold beer. After a well deserved siesta, it is now time for a late afternoon early evening cocktail at the swimming pool or in the lobby during Happy Hour followed by a pre dinner cocktail at the Lotus Sky Bar (the highest lounge Bar in town!) listening to a live DJ… Dinner must be planned and we are still at the Hilton. After dinner it is time to relax to the music of our Filipino Band (a new band just started a few weeks ago featuring three nice to look at girls…) for evergreens at the Milestones. An extensive cocktail and Tapas menu (here we go again) is available whilst you stretch on a comfy sofa. As midnight approaches, a short trip to the Hua Hin Brewing Company to remind you of last night can rock you until 2:00am. Do you really want to miss that Beer can chicken? In this safe environment, carefully monitored by our Samoan Warrior, you can let yourself go. There is a “carry me up to the room” service using the lobby luggage cart in case your legs let go. Oh and almost forgot to mention that whether you spend the night in a Spa Suite, Pacific Suite or a spacious Bay Room (the largest standard room size in Hua Hin), the Hilton crest reminds you of impeccable service, affordable luxury and friendly atmosphere. ...Your Editor...

Only two people signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, John Hancock and Charles Thomson. Most of the rest signed on August 2, but the last signature wasn’t added until 5 years later. In Shakespeare’s time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes, the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase...’Goodnight , sleep tight’ It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride’s father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month, which we know today as the honeymoon.

Saphan Hin Walking

ผูว้ า่ ฯ เพชรบุรี เปิด ‘‘ถนนคนเดินสะพานหิน’’

Street Recently Opened

Th

e opening of Saphan Hin Walking Street coincided with the 1st ChaAm Fishing Games on 12 February 2011 at 6 p.m. Both events were presided over by the Petchaburi Governor Mr. Chai Panitpornpan. The project on transforming Saphan Hin to a walking street for visitors in Cha-Am, initiated by the Petchaburi Governor who would like to make this tourist attraction a symbol of Cha-Am visit, was funded under the Strengthening Thailand Project 2012. With the financial support of 13,544,800 Baht, the Saphan Hin, located on the south of Cha-Am beaches, is now served as a place for recreation, exercise, art and cultural exhibition and afternoon relaxing. It is under the supervision of the Cha-Am Municipality. Even though it has been opened lately, Saphan Hin is much favored by Thais and foreigners alike as they come here to enjoy sunset in the late afternoon and do fishing. This recent tourist attraction will become one of the most frequently visited places and the symbols of Cha-Am very soon. To promote tourism at Saphan Hin Walking Street, the Cha-Am Municipality organized the 1st Cha-Am Fishing Games in which competitors did fishing for snapper, grouper, croaker, stingray, bagrid catfish and other types of fish. Winners will be judged by the weight of the fish they caught. Held between 12 and 13 February, the 1st Cha-Am Fishing Games aims to promote fishing and tourism in the area.

Mainly responsible for administrative work and management at Saphan Hin, the Cha-Am Municipality formulated some regulations which should be followed strictly. No vehicle, except motorcycles, is allowed to park in the area. Construction of any buildings is prohibited. Overnight stay, camping and permanent activities are not permitted. Sitting or standing on the octopus statues is not allowed. Moreover, merchants and sellers there do not have any right to possess the area as their own property. According to the Petchaburi Governor, the Saphan Hin is a symbol of Cha-Am. At both ends of the bridge are two big statues of octopus which visitors like to take pictures with. A night market will be opened for visitors soon. Since it is a symbol of Cha-Am, local people and tourists have to take care of Saphan Hin so that it remains with Cha-Am as long as possible.

Organized by the Cha-Am Municipality between 12 and 20 February 2011, this festive event was joined by a lot of Thai and foreign visitors.

Local fishers of Cha-Am, particularly those in Saphan Yok Community, enjoy a unique way of catching and freshening blue crab. After catching it from the sea, the fishers will put the crab into a sack and hang it at the bridge post. They said that this way could freshen the crab for a longer time than any other modern methods. Currently, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is promoting the crab pulling of Saphan Yok Community as the unmissible Unseen Thailand 3 for visitors to Cha-Am. Those who joined the festival could taste the fresh blue crab with juicy meat. The crab was sold at reasonable prices, too. According to the Petchaburi Governor Mr. Chai Panitpornpan, the 1st Pulling Crab Festival enables Cha-Am to show its potential in tourism promotion and foster local intellect on fishing at the same time. Besides, the more visitors come to the festival, the more income local fishers will gain as they can sell a lot of blue crab.
