THE 11th HUA HIN VINTAGE CAR PARADE

Dear Readers, As many of you have noticed the newspaper in the last issue wasn’t the quality paper that we used to have and this happened because the printing company ran out of stock paper. Now as you can see we are back to the normal paper. The month is starting with a big event “Vintage & Classic cars at the 11th Hua Hin automobile concours and car parades” . The event is taking place both to the Amari Hua Hin and Centara Grand Beach Resort and many other revenues for the gala dinner such us The Venezia and Majestic Greek. Hua Hin makes us proud once again by been chosen as the number 1 Golf destination in Asia and Australasia. In June next year, Hua Hin will host the Centara World Masters Golf Championship. Another event is coming to turn the night into day and I am talking about the International Firework Festival on 21 of December. There are expecting 30.000 fireworks that night. It will be an amazing event and I hope everyone enjoy it, or by the beach or from a viewpoint like Kao Takiab. Now is Christmas time and even those who don’t have the feeling will get soon the Christmas spirit with a movie or a song. The weather doesn’t help a lot to get in Christmas mood but there are still some people who are decorating their houses, the city is full of lights and we love that. Christmas is all about how to bring the greatest happiness to the others, let’s focus on this, not only for Christmas but keep it all year. Because after Christmas the new year is coming and it’s time for rebirth, to start all over from the beginning. Did you prepare your New Year resolution? I am waiting for you to send me by email your suggestions for new year resolution and we will publish the best the best in our next issue. I am looking forward to read your letters. Pizza Casa Mia - Eat like an Italian! Slow and make sure to eat lot of good food!

Do you love pizza and pasta? If you do we have a great place to recommend to you.

P

Road close to Big C and has indoor air-conditioned space as well as outdoor space if you so prefer. The restaurant is owned by the Hansson family that spent many years living in Italy and now they have settled in Hua Hin. They know their food, especially Italian. They also happen to own a furniture shop and have experience The restaurant is located on Nongplub in IKEA as purchasers; so the décor is pleasing to the eye and very cozy just like an Italian restaurant should be. This family together with their Executive Chef Pasquale Parisi enjoys the good things in life. They were going to teach us how to eat the Italian way; by eating a lot of good food over a long dinner. izza Casa Mia is an institution in Hua Hin. They make more than 25 types of Pastas and there is enough choices of pizza for everyone to find something they love. On top of that they have many popular Italian appetisers, steaks, fish dishes, salads, reasonably priced wine and desserts.

We were not prepared for the amount of food that was going to come our way. We started with the pizzas, sampling pizza capriciosa with tomato, mozzarella, mushrooms, ham and olives and then pizza campagnola with tomato, mozzarella, spicy sausage, bacon, bell peppers and olives.

I personally love pizza, because I just like anything with cheese. Once you add items such as bacon, mushrooms, ham it only gets better. Pizza Casa Mia has many years’ experience in making the dough, the main part where a pizza can go wrong or right. In this case their pizza base is really thin and crispy without being dry. Add on that items such as spicy sausages, mozzarella, bacon and you can’t go wrong. So I ate, and ate and I ate so much and at this point that I really should had stopped if I knew what more was coming … After all we were doing it the Italian way. Next came the pastas and this are generous portions I am talking about; Spaghetti Amatriciana & Spaghetti alle Vongole. I had never heard of Amatriciana Pasta before but I found out this is a very popular dish in Italy. It is a slightly spicy tomato and bacon pasta dish that I really liked. Apparently, the sauce originates from the town of Amatrice in the Lazio region in Italy

and is hugely popular. How I missed eating this before I do not know but if you are like me and like to experience new favorites you can now try in comfort at Pizza Casa Mia. Spaghetti Alle Vongole I have had before but I really like the portions and taste, plus it has a liberal dose of clams in white wine sauce. Very refreshing; if you love seafood like I do this is yum! Last but least when we thought there is no way could eat more we were offered a tender steak literally covered in gorgonzola and mushroom sauce. This was lovely. I love Gorgonzola and

I really wish I hadn’t gone crazy with the pizzas and pasta’s because this was also delicious. This will be an item I want to eat again soon although this time making sure I have more space in my tummy. Overall we had a lovely evening eating dinner with the owner of Pizza Casa Mia’s Mr. Jan Hansson and in the care of Executive Chef Pasquale. Great food, great ambiance and a great time; and what else can you ask for! Grazie Pizza Casa Mia! Pizza Casa Mia Tel: 032 535 332

In Hua Hin some property developers have followed the trend of green living and using eco friendly products from the beginning. One of those is the developer of GreenScape Residential Villas on Soi 112. At GreenScape each villa covers a land area of between 400 m² to 2,000 m² and a builtup living area of between 200 m² to 1,000 m². All units are adorned with quality fittings and finishes. The Villa layout is creatively designed to exude an ambience of spaciousness, luxury and comfort; with a 3.2 metre ceiling height, and 3.0 metre high windows and external doors. But more importantly for the clients, the project has been built with nature and clean living in mind. So what does that exactly mean? The first obvious answer is that GreenScape is situated in a mature mango orchard of over 100 Rai, where the villas are surrounded by thousands of big trees. The location is between the new western access road to Hua Hin, Soi 112 and the “Banyan Road” to the Banyan Golf Course. This area is fast developing into a preferred upmarket residential area. The prestigious THB 2.7 billion Maha Samutr Project is a neighbour to GreenScape. Other major developments at the start of Soi 112 are the 26 storey condominium Baan Kiang Fa by Sansiri and the THB 3.75 billion Vana Nava Jungle Water Park with a future adjoining condominium and hotel. With traffic in the centre of town getting more and more congested, there is a definite move towards the area around Soi 112.

Christmas-Our favorite time of the year

o matter how old we are, Christmas brings us joy, happiness, blessings, sharing and respect for each other.

do become meaningless. You could also explain that gifts are essentially rewards for being a good human being with positive traits.

For some of us, the meaning of Christmas is about gathering together with our loved ones during the darkest, coldest times of the year, (or like us gathering together in the warm sunshine) and sharing love and good wishes for the coming year.

A couple of things can be followed by all of us without being religious by bringing a Christmas atmosphere into every home.An Advent Wreath, a crown which can be hung at the entrance door or as a centerpiece on the dining table adding four candles which represent the four weeks before Christmas.

In Hua Hin and other parts of Thailand, many kids come from multicultural families or live in a multi-cultural environment. It can sometimes make things a little confusing to a young child, who can’t help but wonder what Christmas is really celebrating. Here is how we can explain to our little ones the meaning of Christmas. It means different things to different people. To some it’s a very holy time. To others it’s a time for fun and celebration with friends and family. So why not once a year try to put everything else aside and enjoy the tradition and iur loved one’s.

Candles are lit on the four Sundays before Christmas, this year it will start on the 1st of a baby named Jesus more than 2,000 years ago, December. and that Christmas is their way of celebrating Where to buy Christmas decorations: You will that baby’s birthday. No matter where you are most likely find your items in Index Living Mall, it is very important to note that many people Makro, Tesco, Villa Market...For your Christmas view this holiday as being spiritual and culturally tree, It is up to you of when you start installing it significant. in your house. If you go for a fake tree, then you It is important that children realise that Christmas can start decorating it the same weekend as the is not just about receiving gifts, and important for Advent wreath. If you go for a real one buy it inly 2 them to learn and take on board the meaning and weeks before Christmas, to avoid too many pine significance of the gifts themselves. Christmas is a needles falling.

Even if people aren’t Christian, I think Christmas still brings out the best in all of us. The simplest time for selflessness, forgiveness and community With all this advice we wish you all a way is to say that Christians believe that God had and without these things being considered gifts wonderful Christmas Holiday!!

LOY KRATHONG FESTIVAL AT WAT CHA-AM A Balmy Candle lit Evening

December 2013

EVERYDAY PEOPLE

‘KHWAN’ AT BIG C CHA-AM

M

ingkhwan Wangchitrueng has two nicknames, Khwan (an abbreviation of her first name) and Lek (or small in Thai). We’ve known her for a number of years and the impression is that ‘Khwan’ is now become the name of choice.

Khwan is not very tall and it’s easy to understand how her family may have used Lek as a family favourite, being the youngest of 4 girls in the family, however now she has probably (at last) outgrown that image. Khwan is Cha-Am born and bred and most of the family remain in town. She grew up on a family farming property behind where Santorini is now located and two of her sisters continue to take care of the farm. Another sister is the ‘Toon’ of the Tom and Toon Restaurant on the corner of the beach Road and Soi Bus Station; a popular spot for Thai or western food, especially ay breakfast time. Khwan was educated locally and says her parents were unwilling to let her loose on the wider world as a student and the youngest in the family. She attended the Phetchaburi Rajabhat University to study Human Resources but then drifted into a combination of working in local restaurants and at the family property. She also managed to ‘escape’ for a while travelling to Europe and particularly Germany.

L

ocal people in Cha-Am were very excited to be able to enjoy Loy Krathong especially at the Cha- Am Wat with busy beach roads thronged with family groups. There had been some local concerns about weather forecasts predicting storms, however a fine and balmy evening made for a great family night out and about. The full moon was clearly visible and many candle lit lanterns could be seen drifting into the night.

this location is very close to the inlet where water flows out to the ocean; a perfect place to ensure that the floating candle lit decorations progress out to sea. One young guy named Rak (22 years old) commented that this is his second festival in Cha-Am and with the many others there, hoped that the festival will be preserved and go on and go on.

Loy krathong started in Cha-Am at 9.00 AM with Apart from Festival activities around the temple, Khun Nukul, the mayor, opening the celebrations.

he Hua Hin Today team was invited to a graduation ceremony for about 60 new teachers that graduated with a certificate showing they have completed 120 hour in class TESOL from XploreAsia . The graduation ceremony was held at Tessaban Ban Hua Hin School where the teachers had spent hours teaching the students English and at the same time getting together teaching experience hours towards there in-class TESOL. As we toured the school we saw a lot of excited new teachers getting hands-on experience in classrooms and happy Tessaban Ban Thai Students enjoying communication in English. For those of you don’t know what a TESOL certificate is, or maybe wonder what kind of business Xplore Asia conducts here is some information. A TESOL certificate stands for a Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, a certificate that most countries expect from native English speakers when they come to Thailand to teach. The certificate gives the new teachers the skills to teach English to speakers of other languages. The TESOL qualification is accepted all over the world and therefore is a vital requirement for anyone wanting to teach English in Thailand or elsewhere. Xplore Asia run both online and in-class Tesol courses all through year for people that want to teach. For in class TESOL courses they have two locations in Hua Hin and Yangon, Myanmar.

The TESOL In-class a 120 hour course is provided by expert trainers with years of industry experience. The four week course provides is comprehensive. The In-class TESOL also provides over 20 hours of real teaching experience through participation in a non-profit English camp providing community service. The Homestay Program offers clients the unique opportunity to completely immerse themselves within the Thai culture and lifestyle while simultaneously changing the host’s life forever. Recently Xplore Asia has started TEYL on-line Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL) course. The purpose of the TEYL course is to meet the growing need for teachers with specific expertise in teaching young learners (kindergarten and primary school children). I managed to chat to two young gentlemen on graduation day about to get their TESOL certification. I could almost feel the excitement brimming as I caught them after one of their last teaching days before being placed in various locations in Thailand:

Chris from Boston answered my query “Why teach in Thailand? “ I want to try something new. I love the culture and people of Thailand and teaching here is exiting and different”.

He gave his best trick to capture the kid’s attention in class “to use pantomime combined with English words to put through the meaning of what you are trying to say, thus letting them connect the action with the words yet making it fun for the students”. For older children with better English standards “using some Thai phrases if they get restless or frustrated, as that always gets their attention and a guaranteed laugh. Austin from USA described his feeling on the last day before heading to his placement job in Lopburi: “Scarry, exiting, yet fun. The course has given me better confidence and I am ready put in action what I have learned”. Good luck to all our new English teachers! For more information on Explore Asia call: 083 645 3807

WANT TO GIVE A MEANGINGFUL PRESENT THIS CHRISTMAS?

Donate to RICD and help someone come out into the Sunshine this Christmas!

n the newspaper business you get to experience and see many things and once in awhile something affects you so strongly you feel you might not be able to convey your experience properly in words. Such was the case when I agreed to do a story on the Wheelchair Project of Rajanagarindra Institute of Child Development known as RICD.

The RICD was started in Chiang Mai (www. wheelchairproject.com ) as a Royal Project under the patronage of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, daughter of H.M.The King of Thailand. Units of the Project are linked to the government hospitals in Hua Hin and in Uttaradit. The RICD is an organisation that aims to assist poor people with a disability. Second hand wheelchairs are collected from all over the world and given free to people with a disability who are too poor to buy mobility aids by themselves. It is a joint venture between government and non-government organisations. The project has been ongoing since 2001 and is currently staffed by volunteers from Thailand and other countries.

a short tour of the project where I managed to feel the magic of what they were trying to accomplish. I am not ashamed to say I cried on our tour not because it was so tragic, but because what I saw out patients with an unbelievable unbroken spirit and also the amazing people caring for them in humble surroundings with genuine love and pride for what they were doing. I was brought to the area where patients that come in need of wheelchairs, prosthetics or other mobility needs. I met Khun M whose job is to build prosthetics. To me the prosthetics looked very primitive but to someone else they are a means to moving around and independence. Khun M cannot build as many prosthetics as are needed and there is always a long waiting list. The final touch to a prosthetic is the melting of nylon stockings to the resin made leg or arm to make it more durable. Donating to RICD can be as simple as making a collecting of old or new nylon stockings that will make someone’s prosthetic leg durable and water resistant.

I also met Benchamas Jinta-arjaree or Khun Ben as she is also known, who is in charge of the Prosthetics and Orthopedics Department. When we arrived she had the radio on with music so on of RICD patients could sway his hands to the music. The young man with little motor skills and obvious brain damage let me hold his hands as we danced with our hands to the music. I am not sure if he was being measured for a wheelchair but he was I was able to speak with a volunteer who told me obviously treated with much love and respect. about tragic cases. For example a lady they are I also was allowed to peek into the Rehabilitation dealing with has no mobility and cannot afford to Centre where people in hospital after accidents get to the hospital. adopted “family” the nurses, doctors, patients and the like. I am doing a story on the RICD Wheelchair project which also helped SomO and others. Hopefully they can get funding to care for other people that need wheelchairs, prosthetics and necessities to live. If someone wants to really give something meaningful for Christmas... This small snippet elicited responses from many that wanted to donate money. I even had a kind offer of second hand Batman toys to be sent to little SomO. But there are so many more that need help. It is not unheard off or unusual for the Volunteers to find patients that have no access to a toilet or that due to immobility the house is unlivable. As for SomO, he is in good care and seems genuinely happy even though they still keep operate on him from time to time to alleviate his condition (for free I might add). But he taught me that I should not complain about life so much and if I do I should think about his positive attitude and see his small fingers making the OK sign. Everything is OK.

One of the volunteers brought me to Hua Hin The Physiotherapist in charge of the RICD Hospital where the Director of Hua Hin Hospital, Dr. Wheelchair Project in Hua Hin Hospital khun Nirun Juntrakul is very involved in this project. I did Nattanun Saetang (khun Nam). Additionally I was truly touched by a little boy of 5 years called SomO with a beautiful energy who lives in the Hospital and More About RICD has received a wheelchair from RICD. The following tasks are currently being carried out in close cooperation with the Hua Hin Hospital: Providing second hand wheelchairs and other mobility aid to poor people with a disability in the region in close cooperation with the physiotherapists of the local government hospitals. Hamper Project: providing hampers to poor people with disability in the same region, on a monthly basis. These hampers are bought with money from individuals who can ‘adopt’ a patient. Building patient lifts with the help of donor money. The reason for this project is that patients tend to become heavier and it becomes more difficult to take care of themselves. The Project does not donate these rather expensive patient lifts but will lend the lifts to the patients. I would like to thank everyone involved in RICD just for letting me have access just a moment. I hope that instead of spending money on presents this Christmas some of us may give freely to RICD Hua Hin and let someone come out of the shadows and into the world. Let there be light this Christmas for all!

Warm Welcome for ASEAN Visitors in Ranong

he Chairperson and Members of the Hua Hin and Cha-Am Tourism Business Association recently visited Ranong to give a warm welcome to tourism entrepreneurs from ASEAN countries on a field trip in Thailand.

WILDLIFE FRIENDS FOUNDATION TRY A DAY TRIP SOON!

The need for donations of wheelchairs and other medical equipment remains a great need for many people in Thailand. Another limitation for the RICD Wheelchair Project is the lack of funding. The Project doesn’t receive any assistance from the Thai Ministry of Public Health, nor can The Project charge its beneficiaries as these are all poor people.

The Chairperson of the Association, Dr. Rungrot Sileungsawas, said that he went to Ranong between 6th and 8th November 2013 to greet business people from travel agencies from Myanmar, Malaysia and Singapore. The visitors took the field trip to Thailand to gain more experience and exchange knowledge about tourism issues. During the field trip, many delegates commented that many Singaporean and Malaysian tourists like to visit Hua Hin if they prefer a peaceful holiday getaway and natural attractions. Those who would like to experience bustling nightlife may opt to Had Yai in Songkhla, reported Dr. Rungrot. Myanmar is welcoming both Thai and foreign visitors to see its archeological and historical attractions, namely the glowingly gilded Chawedagong Golden Pagoda and Mandalay Palace. Additionally the the Singkhorn checkpoint in Prachuab Khirikhan has been accepted as a permanent checkpoint at the Thai and Burmese border. The Director of Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)’s office in Prachuab Khirikhan Ms. Phasitta

Inphan said that from the end of the year, many Chinese and Russian visitors would come to Thailand and Hua Hin. The TAT has recently issued some measures to take special care of these tourists and provide them with knowledge about Thailand’s traditions and culture, while enhancing English skills among Thai people and tourist police officers. Such measures are effective solutions for tourism issues in Thailand. Pol. Lt. Weerawat Kruasombat, as the Deputy Commander of Prachuab Khirikhan Immigration Office (Hua Hin), added that foreign tourists were allowed to stay in Thailand up to 30 days without any visa and up to 90 days with a visa. Some Russian people have been known to have stayed longer than these limits and may be required by law to pay a fine of 500 Baht per day up to 20,000 Baht. To avoid this some have tried to own a restaurant or a bar. In addition, they may ask friends to apply for a Thai visa on their behalf. Doing so is illegal and can result in persecution for unlawful entry into Thailand. Finally, Pol. Lt. Weerawat asked all hoteliers and guesthouse owners in Hua Hin to take care of Russian tourists as well as other foreigners and inform Thai immigration officers immediately in case of any problems.

Fruit and Vegetable Carving in Thailand

he exquisite carvings of fruit and flowers that accompany Thai dishes are the result of painstaking work and like their ice-carvings, are not meant to last

It says a lot about the culture and artistic heritage of a country that the people will spend time and effort in carefully fashioning a papaya or watermelon into a bouquet of flowers or a picture to grace the centre of a table. Or why they would carve a carrot into a rose just to decorate a plate of rice. Nevertheless Thais do this even when they do not have an oversupply of time. What they do have in abundance of course, is patience and a flair for an eat the beautifully prepared raw fruit shaped like art that is too often overlooked, perhaps because an orchid, or risk disturbing the display of choice vegetables that spill out of a water melon made of its association with the kitchen. into an elaborate basket complete with handle. Fruit Carving in Hotels and Restaurants: Old Siam and Form and Content Hotels and restaurants employ people to sit all day and carve fruit and flowers to decorate tables and In Thai culture, form is as important as content dishes. Often one is unsure whether one should and this applies even to the preparation of basic food. Perhaps this came about because Old Siam was a country with an over abundant supply of fruit and vegetables where people had enough to eat and time to spend on decorating the table. Without the need to be hunters/gatherers, there was time for art to flourish. Historians claim that this art began in the 14th century when a floating lamp was decorated for the Royal Festival on the night of the full moon of the 12th month of that year. One Nang Nopamas shaped fruit and vegetables to look like flowers and used them to decorate the lamp. The king was so impressed with this that he encouraged the women of the royal household to take it up. Not, of course, the princesses.

Food Embellishments in Thai Restaurants

In classical Thai restaurants, the food will always arrive embellished with exquisite carved decorations composed of simple flowers like roses made from chilli peppers to orchids made from root vegetables and other elaborate blooms made from carrots and white radishes.

The most skilled practitioners can demand a high price for their talents and their work can be seen gracing the buffet tables in the best hotels. Often too, they will give demonstrations before a meal at which their dexterity with knife and fruit can be appreciated. To a Thai, the food on the table should attract first the eye, in colour, shape and presentation.

A HEALTH RISK FOR WOMEN

he obsession of many Thai women to avoid the sun to ensure a white complexion could lead to a vitamin D deficiency and an increased risk of bone disease when they get older, according to a study by Chulalongkorn University. Thanomwong Kritpet, a lecturer at Chulalongkorn University’s faculty of sport science, said a study of women aged 25-40 years showed that they had an average vitamin D level in their blood of only 20 nanogrammes per millilitre, which is below the minimum health standard of. 30th. She attributed this low vitamin D level to the obsession of many women to have white skin. She said they avoid direct sunlight and outdoor activities, use sun block cream and wear clothing to protect them from the sun. Many of them spend all their time indoors, further reducing the opportunity for their skin to be exposed to the sun. She said exposure of the skin to sunlight stimulates the production of vitamin D in the body, which helps the absorption of calcium in the intestines into the blood. Vitamin D also helps slow the release of the parathyroid hormone which leaches calcium from the bone. Ms Thanomwong said, the consequence is these women will face a higher risk to bone-related diseases such as brittle bone and osteoporosis when they get older. DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE OR BE A DRINKING PASSENGER!

he Office of Alcoholic Beverages has announced that the occupants of vehicles of any kind who drink alcohol during travel are subject to six months imprisonment and/or a 60,000 THB fine. The penalties will also be imposed on drinkers in vehicles parked on sidewalks or shoulders of public roads, including sois, regardless of whether the vehicles are moving, OAB director Samarn Footrakool said.

sellers) and can only sell in quantities above 10 litres.

The reason given in the text of the relevant Ministerial Regulation is to enhance ‘’the government’s policies towards controlling the consumption of liquor and tobacco for the benefit of society, in the case of liquor by decreasing the times for retail liquor sales’’. Yet the choice of the hours of 2pm to 5pm must have had a more specific purpose than that. One popular school of thought is that it is designed to help prevent underage drinking. Classes typically finish for the day by 2pm, and the theory is that wayward students might then run to the nearest 7-Eleven and start drinking. Yet the ban is in place seven days a week.

THE HUA HIN ‘BIG DOLPHIN’ ALMOST WINS AT

Another reason for the ban may simply be that the government is trying to curb all-day ‘’benders’’, or afternoon drinking by people who might be inclined to play hookie from work after lunch with their colleagues. Legal Drinking Age and Alcohol-Free Zones

Passengers of railbased transport who drink are not subject to the penalties. Drinking occupants and drivers will be equally liable for such violations. “The only exceptions under this law are occupants of vehicles parked in front of their homes,” he said. Some Other Alcohol Rules In Thailand

Since January 1st 2006 Thailand has enforced a law that only allows shops to sell alcohol between 11.00 am.- 2.00 pm. and 5.00 pm.- 2.00 am.

Staff at some stores have difficulty in explaining to foreigners why they cannot be sold alcohol between 2 and 5 PM. Angry outbursts by customers who think they are being singled out are not uncommon. However remember it’s not up to them; it’s the law!

The Election Commission of Thailand bans the sale of alcohol at any retail outlet, and the serving of alcohol in all bars and restaurants during elections. This ban only applies to so-called Type 3 and Type 4 sellers, those who are licensed to sell liquor and spirits in quantities below 10 litres per occasion. Retail shops such as 7-Elevens and Big C supermarkets are put in the same position as wholesalers (being Type 1 and Type 2

Thailand introduced the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act in 2008 , which amended some of Thailand’s previous alcohol laws and increased the drinking age from eighteen to twenty. The Act has specific language making it illegal to sell alcohol to anyone under twenty years old. The Act also set forth laws and penalties for designated areas where alcohol cannot legally be consumed. For example, drinking alcohol is illegal in the following locations: temples or places of worship; infirmaries and pharmacies; public offices; education institutions; petrol stations or petrol station shops and public parks. There are exceptions to many of these locations. For example, if you are attending an authorized banquet at an education institution or public office, or if you are within a temple at which consuming alcohol is part of the worship, then you may legally drink an alcoholic beverage. The penalty for drinking alcohol and one of the aforementioned locations without proper authorization is up to 6 months imprisonment and/or no more than a fine of ten thousand baht. Selling alcohol to anyone who has previously lost consciousness from drinking is also against the law in Thailand. Additionally, if you are considered intoxicated and provoke an altercation with a law enforcement official, the penalty can be up to one year imprisonment and/or a fine up to twenty thousand THB.

REVISED DECISIONS AND RULES OF GOLF FOR 2014-2015 ANNOUNCED

clarifies that players are permitted to access information on the threat of an impending storm in order to protect their own safety.

T

hai professional golfer, Prom Meesawat, is nicknamed the ‘Big Dolphin’ due to his burly physique but also because he comes from Hua Hin. Prom almost triumphed in this latest golf Asian Tour Event with a final round of 65 and a score of 16 under par but succumbed in a sudden death play-off to Chinese Star Liang Wen-chong in the 2013 Resort World Manila Masters in the Philippines.

Prom grew up idolising Boonchu Runagkit and fellow Hua Hin resident Prayad Marksaeng and won numerous junior tournaments, including the Thailand Amateur Open Championship in 2001, 2002 and 2003. The son of Suthep, the first Thai to win the Thailand Open, Prom won his first title in the 2006 SK Telecom Open in South Korea. Hampered by injury in 2009 and 2010, he bounced back in 2011. “When I was very young, I saw a lot of Thai golfers like Prayad (Marksaeng), my dad and Boonchu. They were always playing in tournaments on my home course. Every day before I went to school I would watch them tee up and I thought to myself that one day I want to play professional golf like these guys,” said Prom. Prom also finished second in August’s 2013 Singha Hua Hin Open. He is known for his accurate tee-to-green golf game but what makes him stand out is his calm demeanour in the heat of battle.

The 27-year-old said his ability to stay cool is due to praying and meditation. A follower of Buddhism, Prom says that regular visits to the temple and prayers have often helped him to achieve success. “Every day when I have time in the morning, I will go to the temple and pray. I also pray every night before I sleep,” said Prom.

The next Asian Tour Event in Thailand will be held on Dec 12-15; the Thailand Golf Championship at the Amarta Springs Country Club in Chonburi Province.

Holographics - End the year with the most edgy trend of the year!

Perfect for a New Year’s Eve party, when or where else would you wear it?

S

ince we noticed Hussein Chalayan iridescent metallic leggings we are completely obsessed with this new trend. Before it was more likely to see metallic leathers and shimmering plastics in some sportswear collections but now we hope that we will be able to see it everywhere. In our opinion accessories with holographics will be especially attractive. We think that wearing holographic leggings requires a lot of courage but you can be risqué and go for accessories, makeup and nails art. In terms of artistry, holographic fashion is three dimensional and very metallic. It’s one of the biggest trends internationally. Brands like Hussein Chalayan, Burberry, Alexander McQueen, Diesel, Forever 21 etc have all used holographics in their runway creations. You too can incorporate this trend in pants, jackets, skirts, leggings, dresses, or more safely in your shoes, bags, belts and jewelry, or even for your home by creating your own Christmas ornaments, frames, vases, necklace piece, or even your shirt collar (check out the pictures).

How to wear the trend: The easiest way to pull off a holographic look is to pair it up with neutral colours like black and white. For a more luxurious evening look, wear black and pair it up with jewel in iridescent tones. Wear a holographic top with basic black leggings for a simple yet sleek style. Even a pair of jeans shorts look sophisticated. Another option for wearing this trend is to team it with pastels to balance it out. This combination adds a mysterious sheen of rainbow colours. You can get for a futuristic look with the help of metallic make up and nails polish. But keep everything else to the minimum! If you are not feeling bold or confident enough to sport this trend in your clothes, wear it in statement accessories. Team them with subtle, neutral garments. For example, choose one focal point and wear either a stilettos, a chunky

neckpiece or carry a huge envelope clutch in holographic leather. It seems like more and more often we can’t seem to take our eyes off this new intergalactic trend! Holographic nails use the sunlight to reflect the sparkle and shimmers of rainbow colours, playing with our eyes depending on how the light hits them. And to a party till the end of the night,

THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A ‘BIKER’????

‘Wind therapy; only motorbike riders know why a dog puts its head out the car window.’

M

ost readers will have seen or heard about the horrific statistics related to vehicle crashes and particularly motorbike crashes in Thailand. Too many Thai people and foreigners are the daily victims of injury and death. However riding a motorbike is also recognised as the most convenient, inexpensive and pleasurable means of transport. Eventually many visitors, particularly those who stay for more than a holiday, will decide that riding a motorbike is the ‘way to go’. If it’s not for those romantic notions of freedom on the open road, it’s recognition that a motorbike is probably the easiest and quickest way to get around town. So if you’ve decided to join the two-wheeled set, here are some thoughts on how to avoid becoming a statistic and how to keep smiling as you ride.

RENTING A BIKE

Traffic flows here differently than anywhere else, it’s more instinctual and less about rules.

Don’t take passengers until you are at ease with your own abilities, including making sharp turns. A passenger, especially if he/she is not used to ring on a motorbike, may affect the bike’s stability. We’ve all seen bikes with multiple passengers (mum, dad and the kids) but they’ve grown up riding a bike To legally drive a motor bike in Thailand, you need to almost as soon as they could walk, that’s not you! have either an international licence or a Thai driving licence for that class of vehicle. A good idea is to photograph any blemish in the presence of the other party and have it recorded on the contract.

2. Be Confident But Wary

‘Calling upon my years of experience, I froze at the controls.’ Stirling Moss Driving safely on Thai roads doesn’t depend on split-second reflexes so much as it depends on observation and avoidance. A jittery tense driver can focus too much on the obvious and miss the unexpected, or vice versa. The whole point of a roving gaze and a relaxed driving mind set is to avoid getting to the point where split-second decisions are necessary. The likelihood that eventually somebody is going to do something stupid about 6 feet in front of your handlebars or that that a sleeping dog on the verge is going to suddenly launch itself in your direction is 100%; expect it! You should be constantly checking rear vision mirrors but also being aware of anything potentially mobile that may suddenly dart out into your path. Your field of vision contains everything that you are responsible to avoid. You need to be constantly aware and vigilant.

4. Speeding -

‘Never ride faster than your guardian angel can fly.’ The only place you will get to fast by speeding on Thai roads is to hospital. That includes meandering along narrow lanes, past vehicles with doors destined to open just as you draw level or through intersections where everyone but you has right of way. Don’t try to keep up with Kamikaze teenagers riding mobile chain saws. Just keep calm, slow and steady on the highway with a maximum of something like 70 - 80 KPH and 40 KPH around town. You’ll arrive 2 minutes later but relaxed and in one piece.

of the queue and using sidewalks or any other possible way to get from A to B. Don’t be tempted! Mystery Signalling (or non-signalling) by all sorts of vehicles is at best confusing. You must know that the vehicle is going to turn in the direction of the signal, don’t just trust the signal. Similarly vehicles may change lanes without notice. It’s not a good idea to stay alongside larger vehicles; you may be in a blind spot and the driver may decide to change lanes without notice. Your own signals may be ignored if you are turning off a road. Don’t be surprised if that zooming bike behind passes on the left just as you are about to turn.

WHAT IF?

‘Accidents hurt - Safety doesn’t.’ The chances are that despite your best intention at as some stage you and your bike will part company. We’ve all seen bandaged or bruised individuals, Thai or foreigners limping down the road. The scars of battle or the ‘falang tattoo’ may remain, seen by some as a ‘badge of honour. It’s not a Club we would recommend joining but if you do, don’t be too dismayed. It may be embarrassing if you just forgot to put your foot on the ground as you pulled up and did the ‘limp fall’. Just laugh at yourself and realise that others aren’t really laughing at you, it just looked funny and they have probably done the same in the past. Chances are you will be given a helping hand and no harm done.

If an accident happens, first of all stay cool. If it’s serious enough to involve the Police wait calmly until they arrive. Even if you are convinced that you did nothing wrong and feel a little angry, shouting at Thais does not mean they will listen or understand. It is quite the opposite as Thais think if you lose your temper then you are mentally weak. The best thing to do is to remain quiet and explain to the Police Officer what happened. Perhaps get on the phone for some support. Road rage is a big No No! However don’t be surprised if the ‘ruling’ about Just Joking: A police officer pulled over two right or wrong doesn’t go in your favour, after all it nuns riding on a motorcycle, and said to the rider, wouldn’t have happened if you weren’t there! ‘Ma’am, you’re driving much too slowly, could you please drive faster?” The nun says, ‘Oh, I saw the Don’t make any rash decisions or admissions until sign with the “21” and assumed the speed limit you’ve had the chance to reflect, get good advice, was 21 km/h”. Be aware that this is a voluntary service (despite the name not the Police) offering transport to a hospital. However the level of training, the equipment available and the type of their vehicles varies a great deal. It may be worth pre-considering which hospital you would prefer in such a situation, dependent upon your insurances and financial capacity. THAI COOKING

HOW TO MAKE PAD THAI

hai cooking is celebrated as one of the premier cuisines in the world. Over the past roughly 20 years, its popularity has grown so much that Thai restaurants have sprung up all over the world. Most Thai street venders would be amazed to know that “pad Thai” has become a household word in many Western countries.

Pad Thai

Pad Thai is Thailand’s signature dish. Like the word “Thai” (which means free), Thai cooks are never rigid in their approach. So be flexible in your interpretation of the recipes, particularly if you can’t find every ingredient. Sour, sweet, salty, and spicy can all be found in the basic recipe, but it’s up to individual’s taste to get the Over the centuries, Thai cooking has had many influences. balance just right. Chinese food was a major one since the ‘Tai’ people originally migrated from valley settlements in the mountainous region Ingredients: of Southwest China (now Yunnan province) between the 6th 8 oz (250 g) dried rice noodles (half a package of Chantaboon and 13th centuries. They settled into what is now known as noodles), 3 tablespoons oil, 3 garlic cloves - minced, 10 medium Thailand, Laos, the Shan States of upper Burma, and northwest shrimp or 1/2 lb. chicken or 1/2 lb. firm tofu – optional, 1/4 cup Vietnam. Foreign trade was also important influencing factor. The dried shrimp/prawns, 2 teaspoons diced pickled or salted radish – Portuguese brought their sweets to King Narai’s court in the 17th optional, 1/2 cup firm tofu, diced, 1/4 cup (2 fl oz/60 ml) fish sauce, century and some say Buddhist monks from India brought curry 1/4 cup (2 oz/60 g) sugar (palm sugar preferably), 2 tablespoons to Thailand. Other traders brought Persian and Arabian recipes tamarind juice*, 1 or 2 eggs, beaten, 1/4 cup 1-in (2.5-cm) lengths chopped chives, 1/4 cup (2 oz/60 g) ground roasted peanuts, and spices. 1 cup bean sprouts * Tamarind’s unique sourness makes pad Thai taste like pad Thai, but if you haven’t got it, throw in some lime juice instead.

Garnish: 1/2 cup bean sprouts, 1/2 cup chopped chives, 1/2 lime, cut into wedges (sour) Provide the following extras to allow each eater to balance the flavours as they wish: Ground peanuts, Dried ground chilli (spicy), Sugar (sweet), Fish sauce (salty)

Through taking a little something from each of these cultures and combining them with the area’s rich biodiversity, overtime Thailand has developed its own unique cuisine. Its amazing popularity is due to the fact that it’s healthy, easy to prepare, and most importantly, delicious.

The secret to the Thai cuisine is in harmonizing four tastes: sour, sweet, salty, and spicy. Each flavour should be balanced with the others yet remain distinctly identifiable. Although spiciness is often thought of as the defining characteristic of Thai food, the ‘heat’ must be equalized with the right mix of roots, grasses, and aromatic herbs such as sweet basil, mint, cilantro (coriander), lemongrass, and galingale (in the ginger family). In addition to taste, equally important to Thai cooking is having a variety of textures and colours. And always be sure to pay attention to presentation. As you’ll learn watching any street vendor in an alley way in Bangkok, it’s not authentic Thai food if it doesn’t look as good as it tastes!

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Drama, romance, science fiction & fantasy, comedy

Under certain circumstances, we could be talking about a film of a story that has been told thousands of times, with most of them in the same pedestrian and pointless way. Two people meet each other, fall in love and after the period in which all seems rosy, problems make the foundation of their relationship tremble. But in this case we have an important difference .The results lead us beyond any imagination and expectation. In this film characters have a choice to forget, erase the bad memories and feelings of their relationship. Lacuna Inc is a company that offers this kind of possibility but the ignorance of the consequences will make both of the characters vulnerable. The Eternal Sunshine is one unexpectedly warm movie with Jim Carrey doing his best to avoid any strange faces! Director: Michel Gondry Actor: Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Gerry Robert Byrne

How to cook: 1. Soak the rice noodles in cold water for 30 minutes, or until soft. Drain, and set aside. A quicker method is to boil noodles the noodles for about 2.5 minutes, then drain and rinse with cold water. But be sure not to overcook them or they will disintegrate when stir-fried. 2. Heat a large skillet until hot, and then add the oil. Add the garlic and shrimp (chicken or tofu), and stir-fry. Add the dried shrimp, pickled radish, and diced tofu. 3. Once the shrimp (chicken or tofu) is cooked, add the noodles and stir-fry until translucent. It may be necessary to reduce the heat if the mixture is cooking too quickly and the noodles stick. 4. Add the tamarind juice, fish sauce, and sugar. Stir-fry the mixture until thoroughly combined. Stir in the egg. 5. Turn the heat to high and cook until the egg sets, stirring gently. Thoroughly combine the mixture, and continue cooking over medium-high heat for about 2 minutes until most of the liquid is reduced. 6. Mix in the chives, peanuts and bean sprouts. The Truman Show Drama, comedy

Our protagonist is a tragic character whose whole life was being filmed without his knowledge. Imprisoned in a false and artificial world, he has no idea what is happening and he does not know how he has become entertainment for the Director and television audience. He is the only real people in his world. The cameras are indifferent to his personal rights, dignity oand private life because viewers are greedy and always ask for more and more. The reason this show was so successful on TV is because it’s a soap opera based on a true story. Viewers were not seeing a series, they were peeking inside the life of another from a safe distance. Most of all, they shared the life of the actor, including his most esoteric and secret moments. The aim of the script is to awaken us and to show how the media can affect our lives, guide our behaviour and reactions. A must see movie for those who think differently. WHAT TO EXPECT AT A THAI FUNERAL

t’s not unusual for long term stayers in Thailand to be invited to attend a Buddhist funeral. In fact you may not even be invited; but attending and showing your respects to the family of the deceased will be welcomed if you have a connection. Funeral rites are the most elaborate of all the life-cycle ceremonies and the ones entered into most fully by the monks. It is a basic teaching of Buddhism that existence is suffering, whether birth, daily living, old age or dying.

Funerals for Thai Buddhists can go on for much longer than what you may have seen before in the West. It could last from anything from one week to a year or two. Depending on how close your relationship was to the deceased, you probably won’t be expected to attend every part of the funeral. In many situations this would only be the cremation on the last day. For relations of friends you probably would attend at least one if not all of the chanting sessions. If you are close to the family then it might be appropriate for you to bring a wreath. Either that or give the family some money in an envelope.

sessions are shortened to say five days, the same amount of If you are invited to a funeral, then the first question that might go merit still needs to be created for the deceased, so on two nights through your mind is what to wear. This is likely to be either black the chanting sessions have to be done twice. or white and you should avoid any bright colours. In Bangkok, the daily chanting sessions for the deceased will The Bathing Rite takes place on the evening of the first day. You probably start at 7 p.m. and last for about an hour. Upcountry would only attend this if you knew the deceased personally. The these are often done at the house and may go on all night as body is laid out on a table and covered with a cloth. However, the deceased. They do this for only a day or two. Even though it is this might be shortened if the cremation needs to take place only for a short time, they still have to do the full ordination which on a certain day, like the weekend. It also should be noted that includes the shaving of hair and eyebrows. On the morning of the cremations cannot take place on Fridays as the name for that cremation there is more chanting and food is then offered to the day sounds like the Thai word for “happiness”. If the chanting monks. Once everyone has eaten, it is time to move the coffin to the crematorium. The coffin is carried outside and placed onto an ornate cart. A procession then takes place to the crematorium. Leading the way are family members carrying a portrait of the deceased. Behind them are a couple of monks holding onto a white thread that is attached to the coffin. The mourners walk behind the coffin. If you have ever done a procession around a chapel at a Thai temple on a Buddhist holiday you know that you have to walk around it three times in a clockwise direction.

However, for funerals, you must walk anti-clockwise.

The coffin is then taken up the steps and placed on a high table in front of the crematorium doors. The portrait of the deceased is also placed here. The crematorium itself is decorated during the afternoon with black and white cloth and beautiful flowers which were the favourites of the deceased. The cremation ceremony is often in the late afternoon. If you didn’t go to the Bathing Rite or any of the nightly chanting then the cremation ceremony is the one that you should really attend. At cremations you don’t get to see much of the ceremony. Most people are seated far away. During the ceremony, honoured guests will come forward with monk robes and place them on a pedestal in front of the coffin. The same ribbon is being used to connect the pedestal to the coffin. A monk then comes to receive the robe as if it was offered by the deceased. The monk says a prayer before receiving the robe. During the ceremony someone will also give a eulogy about the life of the deceased. There is often also some kind of traditional dance performance.

Cremation ceremonies are often over very quickly; anything from 30 minutes to an hour. When you arrive you are given a flower made from wood shavings. You will need this for the last part of the ceremony. The monks at the cremation will go up the steps first with their “flowers”. These are placed under the coffin as if you were lighting the funeral fire. Once all of the monks have done this then it is the turn of the guests. What most people do is tap the coffin a couple of times with the flower then place it in a tray under the coffin and then give a quick “wai”. You are also supposed to say a short prayer telling the deceased person that you forgive them for any wrong doings in the past. On your way down, you will be given a kind of souvenir of the funeral to take home. At this stage, most people would go home. They have paid their respects. Unless you were close to the deceased, you would go home too. It is mainly family members that stay for the actual cremation. What happens first is that the ornaments decorating the coffin are removed. The coffin is then lifted off its base and then carried towards the crematorium oven. The lid is then taken off. A coconut is cut open and the juice poured over the deceased person. The coffin is then pushed inside the chamber. This is the last chance for family members to pay their respects. The remaining sandalwood flowers are also thrown into the coffin. Everyone then goes down to the bottom of the steps where they gather around to watch the cremation. At some funerals I have attended, rockets are fired into the sky. However, this is banned in residential areas. The friends and relations don’t wait for the fire to finish. They will come back the next day to collect the ashes. A monk is present for this ceremony. Sweet smelling flower petals are mixed in with the ashes. Depending on the family, these might be placed in one urn or several. Once they are collected they are taken to the prayer hall where there is more chanting and robes and food are again presented to the monks on behalf of the deceased. What happens next to the ashes will vary. Most will keep the ashes at the temple as there will be further merit making ceremonies on the 50th and 100th days. Some people keep them at their home.

CREPE AND CO – A REAL FEAST FOR THE EYES AND THE TUMMY

hen the Hua Hin Today team was invited to taste the food at Crepe & Co I was very happy to be chosen to go because at Crepe & Co they surely know the three things you need for a successful restaurant: food, ambiance and service. They truly excel in all three, yet make it look so easy.

I have eaten at Crepe & Co before but knew that there were yet still so many things to explore in the menu. This time I asked Serge the owner of Crepe & Co to recommend something new and step out of my usual order of Crêpe Greek (filled with Spinach, Feta Cheese, Oregano and Olive oil yum yum). Crepe & Co specialize in Crepes (thin pancake sweet or savory) but also there is so much more to offer in Mediterranean food. The restaurant is owned by brothers that lived in many of the countries their food comes from, so they know their stuff and I thought it could be time to try some of their favorites. Serge recommended to start with the appetizer set for two (@325 THB) which includes these yumlicious items: calamari fritos; “anglaise” deep fried squid with dip; Moroccan briouttes (triangles filled with beef), rice and cinnamon; cheese rolls filled with gruyere cheese & ham; Moroccan salad; ensalada de pimientos asados (also known as roasted pepper salad), harissa chili dip and pita bread. I love, love the appetizer set for two! Actually I think the name of the dish should be called appetizers for one! I for one don’t like to share if something is good and this was seriously yummy. The cheese rolls were the best although the name was not as sexy sounding as the others. They were so good that if you look at the picture we took of the plate carefully you see one is missing before even started to eat because I couldn’t keep my hands of them.

and tasty and the couscous was light and fluffy. I couldn’t finish much of it after the fondue but it was one of those moments you wished you were like a camel with large sectioned stomachs that could take more food.

Next we had Crêpes Fondue filed with gruyere cheese, feta, cheddar, wine & garlic Cream. This is a cheese lover’s dream. It really tastes like fondue so if you like cheese and love fondue ah then this is your obvious choice.

Thank you to Serge and his staff for a lovely evening and their company in this beautiful restaurant. The aim of Crepe & Co is to make people feel like they are home and they have reached that goal. On top of that they serve seriously good food!

We also tried the tajine of lamb a famous Moroccan dish with sautéed onions, raisins, cinnamon with couscous. A tajine dish is typically cooked in special earthenware and the tajine is a magic way of cooking meat so it melts in your mouth. The dish was fabulous, tender,

‘THE RESTAURANT’ CARVERY BUFFET

T

Simply the Best at the Dusit Thani Hu Hin

he first thing that you notice as you enter The Restaurant is the giant crystal chandelier suspended below the domed ceiling. You’ll also be taken by the views available through the front windows with views across ornamental pools, lit pathways then the swimming pool and ocean beyond. ‘The Restaurant’ is the name of this dining establishment at the Dusit Thani which offers a weekly Monday night Buffet Carvery Dinner.

Before making your way to the carvery stations, a vast array of entrée selections are so visually appealing that it’s almost guaranteed that you won’t be able to resist at least one sample. I deliberately use the word ‘sample’ because that is how these tempters are presented. It’s really a matter of choosing which of the individually prepared and presented ‘samples’ you will simply collect and return to your table. Just as well the selection is in small sample size portions, as you do want to save some of your appetite for the carvery selection and dessert.

As well as the main large dining room, on a balmy evening, tables outside may be preferred with a tree covered terrace and beautiful garden setting. Outside you will also hear the strains of a Thai musical ensemble playing gentle music from nearby pavilion outside the Thai restaurant. I almost always prefer this sort of outdoor setting for a romantic dinner for two and this was no exception. The word ‘carvery’ usually refers to a restaurant where roast meat is freshly sliced to order for customers, sometimes offering unlimited servings for a fixed price. Carveries are often found in pubs and hotels in European styled premises and are commonly held at weekends with traditional Sunday roasts for a large number of people. The image is one of a quantity rather than quality with diners often jostling for position and showing their own carving skills (or lack thereof!) as they load their plates with as much as they can hold. Not too sophisticated and often a ‘pig-out’ in more ways than one! The second important word is ‘buffet’. The term buffet originally referred to the French sideboard furniture where the food was served; in other words ’help yourself’. Perhaps a style of dining which has become tainted by the image of large corporate gatherings or parties where hoards of hungry guests wander around with stacked plates.

Similarly desserts offered beautifully prepared individual morsels so that you may choose more than one without damaging your waistline too much. The desert ‘samples’ are often layered within a small wine glass to extenuate the colours and show you what is on offer. A real smorgasbord (the Swedish version of a buffet) of sweet delights. Here are some examples of what is on offer at the carvery buffet apart at the dinner, but in this case with skilled carvery staff standing by to from the carvery itself. Not the full list but aimed to show you the plate your selection. Tender roasted leg of lamb with rosemary and variety on offer: garlic, roasted pork rack and roast Charolais grain fed beef with gravy were the features of this part of the dinner. The visible appeal of the choices is outstanding and I noticed others taking photographs before eating because the colours and presentation of the offerings were such a ‘feast for the eyes’. There’s no lack of sophistication in this buffet. One of the advantages of a buffet is that you can see before you choose, sometimes a better alternative to choosing from the words on a menu, especially if you’re not familiar with the names of menu items or for that matter your knowledge of written English is limited. You chose from what is appealing to your eyes.

But first a glass of wine (or two) to prepare the palate. Before entering The Restaurant’s version of a buffet carvery is much, much more; the restaurant you will see outside the front door a display of wine lacking nothing in sophistication and not compromising on standards bottles as an indication of the world-wide choices available from of presentation or service. Of course carved roast was a main offering the hotel cellars. In this case the chosen wine was a bottle of 2011 Californian Chardonnay. Bottled with the Dusit Thani label in California, this proved to be an ideal choice featuring light citrus aromas and delicate flavours with a creamy finish. Shredded crab and advocado salsa, king prawns with egg and paprika filling, gado gado salad, rock lobster parisienne, scallop and shrimp Service may be thought of as less important for a buffet styled dinner. thermidore, lobster bisque soup, dory fish fillet with fennel and white However our experience at The Restaurant was really enhanced by the wine sauce, fusilli with salmon and creamed vodka sauce, braised charming attention given to the table by Khun Maneehan. She offered chicory endive roll with gratinated ham and mornay sauce, assorted explanations, advice and tasting of the wine (by us!) followed by caviar, paprika sticks, Yorkshire pudding, tomota saba and MORE! doors being opened and smiling conversations on occasions. Never intrusive but always on hand and aware of any needs. 10th Anniversary of Monsoon Valley Wines Celebration @ Hua Hin Vineyard The Secret of Monsoon Valley

n Thailand, we believe that our fields, rivers, and mountains are shared with the spirit world, whose inhabitants live with us and protect us. The land of Monsoon Valley is no exception. The mystical and sacred Naga, the symbol of abundance, is believed to protect the hills, valleys, and vineyards of the Hua Hin Hills region. Indeed, the aromatic and distinctly Thai wines we produce from international grape varietals are the result not just of skill and passion, but also the benevolence of the land. From the loamy sand and slate to the balmy ocean breeze and the surrounding hills, the watchful presence of the Naga ensures the quality of our award-winning wines. Our accomplishments have been made within a short span of 10 years and we are more so proud to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Monsoon Valley Wines with you as well as looking forward to more achievements in the future. TAKING CARE OF THE HIGHWAYS – POLICE AND RESCUE

NEED ASSISTANCE? Call the emergency call centre (Police, Fire or Rescue) – 1193

T

he main Highways in the Hua Hin and Cha-Am Region carry a significant amount of traffic and with that comes a responsibility to control, ensure safe transit but also to take care of any misfortunes that may occur. Apart from the general policing duties of the Royal Thai Police, Thailand has two special additional resources to achieve these aims. Visitors or even long term residents are sometimes confused about how this is managed and the roles of the HIGHWAY POLICE and the HIGHWAY POLICE RESCUE. It’s easy to understand why many are confused as the names are very similar but the organisations are very different.

This is a 24/7 operation with those not on duty always on The Highway Police has a separate command structure to Provincial call should an emergency arise. Offices and is largely independent in its operations. One of the frequent necessities of rescue is to provide transport to What Do They Do? medical care at a hospital. The HPR is aware of some ‘bad press’ they have received in the past about this role. The suggestion (right A constant presence on the or wrong) was that ‘commissions’ may have been available if private Highways with patrolling health care facilities were favoured over public hospitals, particularly vehicles on the lookout for an issue when the patient did not have health insurance coverage. any sort of problems on the Some 3 or 4 years ago a policy was but in place to address this road. concern. The coordinator of the Cha-Am Region, Mr Somyot or Khun Enforcement of traffic Gie, commented that all staff are instructed to take a patient requiring regulations on main highways, medical care to the nearest public hospital. If a patient is insistent on including the use of speed wanting to go to a private facility, approval must be obtained from the detecting and alcohol/drug ‘office’ and recorded with the patient’s written consent. testing equipment. The need to purchase equipment to effectively deliver this service Providing an escort service is always an issue. Rescue services all over the world which attend for ‘convoys’ of multiple to motor vehicle accidents almost inevitably use what is known as vehicles to facilitate safe the ‘Jaws of Life’. This is an hydraulic rescue tool used to assist and convenient transit. This the vehicle extrication of crash victims, as well as other rescues from may be for private tours small spaces. These tools include cutters, spreaders, door busters (free!) when there are at and rams. Currently the Cha-Am HPR has no access to such a least 6 vehicles travelling device and we are told this has resulted in the unnecessary death of together. Additionally there several people this year alone. Costs for this essential equipment are may be government or Royal in the vicinity of 200,000 THB. travellers needing this sort of escort to ensure safe and unimpeded passage. Thinking About Sponsorship? Corporate sponsorship is alive and well in the Hua Hin / Cha-Am Region with many charity fund raising events arranged raising millions of Baht for a variety of causes. In this case it’s more than giving a helping hand but in a very practical way saving lives! As we have previously suggested, image cane an issue. Of course when there are suggestions of ‘kick backs’ or any form of suspicion about motivation, sponsorship becomes hard to find.

n this case a combination of a somewhat confusing name and some previous bad press has not been helpful in securing sponsorship. But as the cause is not about needing cash but equipment, perhaps a corporate project to purchase and present the ‘Jaws of Life’ could be considered. Hua Hin & Cha-Am Today will certainly do all we can to publically acknowledge your support! Contact us to get all the information you need.

Most importantly – The ‘Highway Police Rescue’ are not actually Police! HIGHWAY POLICE RESCUE

The name Highway Police Rescue (HPR) is very confusing and may be misleading to many. Perhaps it was just a bad translation from the Thai name that has stuck or perhaps the word ‘Police’ does not have the same connotation in Thai compared to English. However be assured that this organisation is made up of voluntary personnel who have neither the authority nor powers of Police Officers. We understand that the initiative for the organisation being formed came from the Highway Police originally in recognition of their organisational limitations. The primary aim is to rescue travellers in distress, perhaps the ‘Good Samaritans’ of Thailand. They may be considered as an auxiliary of the Police and other statutory services with a clear mandate to help anyone when needed.

Characteristically you are likely to see the HPR dressed in bright orange overalls attending to accident victims or taking care of broken down (have you ever run out of fuel?) or damaged vehicles. However they are also involved in other rescue ‘missions’, responding to any situation where there are people in distress. They may also be in attendance at a variety of community events ‘just in case’. You may see a variety of different vehicles of all shapes and sizes with the distinctive HPR logo displayed and equipped with emergency flashing lights. As a voluntary service the uniforms, vehicles and, for that matter, all the equipment used is self-funded. Hua Hin & Cha-Am Today attended the office of the Cha-Am Branch of the HPR to talk to the local workers and to gain some insights on how they operate. These volunteers usually have their ‘day jobs’ in this case they were builders, security staff and cooks. The very basic ‘office’, alongside the Highway Police base, is a few kilometres north of town. It was built by the volunteers and contains radio equipment

Rendering assistance for the drivers and passengers of broken down or damaged vehicles or cases of medical emergency.

In many Western countries on ‘freeways’ or other main transport ‘arteries’ services are provided so that everyone’s journey can be as uneventful as possible. In Thailand the Highway Police are there to provide these services on our main roads. What About Our Region?

Hua Hin & Cha-Am today was invited to talk with Khun Denlar at the Hua Hin Office and centre for operations in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. His area of responsibility is primarily the main Bangkok Highway south within the borders of the Province. This includes the section of the Hua Hin bypass Highway. This amounts to around 246 kilometres of road with 16 vehicles and probably half of these on the road at any time. There are 8 subdivisions and each has 4 or 5 Footnote: Recently a motorbike rider travelling along Narathip Road smaller offices. collided with the rear end of a parked car. All our readers should know that 90 kilometres per hour is the maximum speed limit on all Thailand highways. Some discretion is allowed in enforcing this limit (we won’t tell you how much discretion) but there are speed cameras on the road!

Royal Thai Police THE HIGHWAY POLICE

We’re trying to unravel the mysteries of the many jurisdictions of the Police in Thailand. The Royal Thai Police come in many varieties each with a particular role and function. Our focus in this article is the Highway Police thanks to the hospitality of Police LT. Colonel Denlar Rattanakit, of the Highway Police Division Three, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

Our host was eager to make one plea to travellers apart from the concerns mentioned above and that is: ………….. BE PREPARED FOR YOUR JOURNEY! .............. In other words know that your vehicle is ready for the trip (maintenance and fuel), plan to be rested, not rushed and always thinking about safety!

You may have seen Highway Police vehicles travelling on patrol along one of the Region’s main highways. These vehicles are recognisable with distinctive maroon and yellow colours compared with the maroon and white colours of the Provincial Police. The name Highway Police is accurate as their mandate is to take care of safety and the law when it comes to travel along the main traffic arteries anywhere in Thailand. Not just about policing the roads but ensuring that highways remain safe and uncongested. Highway Police have the same legal powers and authority vested in any of the Royal Thai Police branches. Although not strictly with a law enforcement agenda, certainly able to arrest, detain, charge or react to any unlawful behaviour. Random checks are carried out sometimes resulting in the seizure of illegal drugs or other contraband. The question of legal driving licence requirements is also on the agenda. Luckily for some, foreign drivers are not as frequently questioned as Thai people, particularly if the officers in question can

NEW! Noirmoutier “Fleur de Sel” Organic Grey Sea Salt Spa Treatment at VIE Hotel Bangkok and V Villas Hua Hin

“A present for your perfect skin direct from Noirmoutier Island in France to VIE Hotel Bangkok & V Villas Hua Hin”

A 90-minute Noirmoutier Fleur de Sel Sea Salt Treatment and Silk Oil Massage is exclusively available at both VIE Hotel Bangkok and V Villas Hua Hin from 1st October to 31st December 2013, or until this rare imported product runs out! For 1500 years, salt farmers have harvested the Noirmoutier Sea Salt by hand. Harvesting the salt is a cottage industry where the only ingredients are the sea, the sun, and man. Organic Grey Sea Salt from Noirmoutier is known as “fleur de sel” (flower of salt) and undergoes no treatment after harvesting. Neither washed, nor refined, it keeps its essential pure nutrients, which are vital to the human body. Salt farmers follow strict harvesting rules as prescribed in the ABF specifications

(Agriculture Biologique Francaise - French Organic Farming), making it very exclusive and pricy. Far from being mere sodium chloride, Noirmoutier Sea Salt concentrates countless benefits taken from the sea. As the seawater slowly moves from ocean to salt pan, exposed to wind and sun, its salt content keeps rising and the salt crystals are enriched with health-enhancing minerals which help to exfoliate dead skin, stimulate circulation, relieve stress and purify skin. Thoroughly cleansing the skin’s pores, fleur de sel is also known to remove toxins from your skin and strengthen skin tissue, while helping to regenerate new skin and keep your skin looking younger. This exotic 90-minute treatment has two steps. Start with a 30-minute fleur de sel scrub to allow your skin to breathe easier and regenerate new skin. Then nourish and brighten your skin with a 60-minute Silk Oil Treatment. Be ready to fall in love with your new soft skin, only THB 1,999 net per person including foot bath with volcanic mud bath bomb.

Their lives are continuously dependent on blood transfusions and medication. Permanent cures like stem cell transplants are very expensive and also very risky. It is advised that people getting married should take a simple blood test and ensure that both the partners are not carrying the Thalassemia trait. Rubella Test – Rubella (German measles) is an infection caused by the rubella virus. It is usually a mild illness causing a rash, sore throat and swollen glands. It occurs most commonly in young children, but can affect anyone. However if you are pregnant and catch rubella, it can cause serious damage to your unborn child. Before your first pregnancy you should have a blood test to check if you are immune to rubella. If you are not immune, you can be immunised before becoming pregnant. We hope that this article is beneficial to you and encourage anyone who plan to have a baby to take these blood tests before pregnancy; for your child’s sake.
