6 News Celebrating HM The King of Thailand’s Birthday His Majesty, King Bhumibol, Rama IX of Thailand was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on December 5, 1927. This year will celebrate the King’s 87th birthday on Sunday, December 7, 2014. This celebration is also referred to as Thai Father’s day since the King is the symbolic father of Thailand. The King and Queen are revered for they generosity and caring for the Thai people. Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world’s longest-reigning monarch, is revered by many Thais as a unifying force, especially in times of crisis. His portrait hangs in government buildings and in many shops and homes. The King’s father, Prince Mahidol, was studying medicine at Harvard University at the time of the King’s birth. The King’s grandfather was King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), one of the most famous kings of the Royal House of Chakri. Prince Bhumibol’s father died at an early age and his mother moved to Switzerland where the young prince lead as “ordinary” life as possible. Prince Bhumibol’s interests during this time were photography, tinkering with electrical & mechanical things, and science. While in Switzerland he entered Lausanne University. While in Switzerland he met and fell in love with a charming young Thai lady. They were married just prior to the King’s coronation in 1950. It is worth noting that Thailand has had a constitutional monarchy since 1937. King Bhumibol is the longest reigning king is the world. About HM The King of Thailand – some interesting facts you may not know! The King’s complete name is: Phrabat Somdej Phra Paramindra Maha Bhumibol

Adulyadej Mahitaladhibet Ramadhibodi Chakrinarubodindara Sayamindaradhiraj Boromanatbophit Or in Thai language:

พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมพิ ลอดุลยเดช มหิตลาธิเบศรามาธิบดี จักรีนฤบดินทร์ สยามินท ราธิราช บรมนาถบพิตร. When the King was born (in USA), the hospital room was declared as Thai territory for the duration of the birth so that he can be said to have been born ‘on Thai soil’. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, His Majesty has been awarded more honorary academic degrees than anyone else in the world, a grand total of 136! His Majesty has composed 46 beautiful and eternal songs such as Love at Sundown, Falling Rain, and Near Dawn, which are loved both in Thailand and abroad. His first song, Saeng Thian (Candlelight Blues), was composed in April 1946. On 12 December 2000, the Thai Cabinet approved the proposal by the Office of National Identity Promotion to honour His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand as the Father of Technology of Thailand and also declared 19th October “Thailand’s Technology Day.” He is the world’s only monarch to hold a patent, holding several patents on rainmaking since 1955: the “sandwich” rainmaking patent in 1999 and lately the “supersandwich” patent in 2004. The King loves Jazz music and can play the piano, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, and cornet. He has played with many of the world’s most famous Jazz

musicians such as Benny Goodman, Jack Teagarden, Lionel Hampton, and Stan Getz. In addition, he is a painter, photographer and best-selling author and translator. His translated works are “Tito” (The biography of Josip Broz Tito, former Yugoslavia president, by Phyllis Auty) and “Nai In Phu Pid Tong Laang Phra” (The Man called Intrepid by William Stephenson). The National best-seller “Phra Mahachanok” is based on a traditional Jataka story of Buddhist scripture. “The story of Thong Daeng” is the story of his dog Khun Thong Daeng.

His favourite sport is sailing, and he won the Southeast Asia Peninsula Games gold medal on 16 December 1967. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, has recently been treated for a swollen intestine and remains in hospital after surgery to remove his gall bladder in October. The health of the King is a subject of keen public concern as he is revered by many Thais as a pillar of national unity and morality. Our congratulations to HM the King on this important day; our best wishes for a speedy recovery and a long life.

Five top-20 players led by world No 5 David Ferrer and Milos Raonic will play the World Tennis Thailand Championship, in Hua Hin from December 31st to January 2nd. HUA HIN TODAY, December 2014

The friendly tournament, with a US$2 million budget, will replace the Thailand Open, which was scrapped last year due to lack of spectator interest. Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand (LTAT) president Suwat Liptapanlop believes the new format will suit the taste of Thai fans who want to see star players in a shorter format. Suwat said the Hua Hin exhibition would be used to promote tennis in Thailand as well as boost tourism and the local economy. “We want to continue promoting tennis locally. The Thailand Open, which we first organised in 2003 and featured super stars like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray and the Hua Hin World Tennis Invitation featuring Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Caroline Wozniacki are examples of the work we did to promote the sport,” said Suwat. Revealing the competition format, Suwat said the top two seeds will receive bye on Day 1, when a special match between Berdych and a Thai Davis Cup player will

be played. The second day will feature the semi-finals and a play-off between the first-day losers. January 2, the final day, will see the final and the thirdplace match. Match-winners will receive US$10,000, while the champion will take home $40,000. Suwat said players would also be invited to take part in cultural activities such as giving alms to monks on New Year’s day, cooking lessons on Thai specialities like tom yum koong (spicy shrimp soup), visiting the Baan Khao Tao handicraft royal project and stopping by at the Vana Nava Hua Hin Water Jungle. The LTAT will also use this opportunity to sharpen the skills of local Davis Cup players, who will practise with the six players. Thailand will play host to South Korea in the Davis Cup zone Asia/Oceania Qualifying Group I first round tie in February. The Hua Hun event will be televised live on True 2, True HD670 and Digital TV Channel 24. Tickets at 1,500-6,000 THB can be purchased at Thai Ticket Major, Siam Continental Hua Hin Hotel and all Major Cineplex branches.

14 GOLF Asia Pacific Golf Summit Black Mountain & Banyan Share the Honours

Hua Hin has once again shown the quality of regional golf courses and golf course management with Black Mountain and Banyan being awarded top honours at the 2014 Asia Pacific Golf Summit. This comes on the back of Hua Hin being named by the International Association of Golf Tourism Operators as 2014 Golf Destination of the Year in Asia/Australasia.

“This is a very special new category and the Best Caddie of the Year Award which went to our girl Kannika Namthong was a totally overwhelming experience for her. To get on an airplane for the first time in her life and fly to a venue like Marina Bay Sands Resort in Singapore blew her away – a life-time experience for her,” said Stuart Daly, director of golf operations at Banyan.

The 2014 Asia Pacific Golf Summit set out to recognise the best in the Asian golf industry, showcasing some of the most exemplary people engaged in the business of golf Asia. The awards were made at the recently concluded Gala Awards Banquet of the 2014 Asia Pacific Golf Summit held in Singapore on November 14-15.

It’s Not Golf; It’s Not Croquet – It’s Woodball Perhaps one of the most unusual sports being showcased at the Asian Beach Games held during November in Phuket was ‘Woodball’. Woodball was first incorporated into the Asian Beach Games in 2008. The International Woodball Federation is based in Taipei, Taiwan. Woodball is a cross between croquet and golf and can be played on grass, sand or indoors. Players strike a ball with a wooden mallet along a course comprising of 12 separate fairways (holes). Each fairway can range in length from 30-130 metres. At the end of each fairway is a gate marked by 2 bottles through which players must strike the ball to complete the fairway. The player who complete all 12 fairways in the lowest number of strokes is declared the winners.

The Spaniard will return to the Amata Spring Country Club Chonburi, for his fourth appearance at the US$1 million Asian Tour event which he won by four shots last year. The event is held between 11th and 14th December.

Garcia won last year’s Thailand Golf Championship with girlfriend Katharina Boehm on his bag, but has decided to ‘hire’ close friend and retired tennis player Ferrero to be his caddy for the week.

16 Wellness Top 10 Reasons to See a Dentist Dentists are an important part of our lives. But some people (especially men) don’t think so! If you need convincing that regular dental check-up here are the top ten reasons to get into the habit. Dentists in Thailand are typically well qualified, inexpensive and readily available. Dental tourism is big business here. They have the best ‘almost no pain’ treatment anywhere. So put aside your phobias and give your oral hygiene that essential boost. Here’s why! 1. Maintain your teeth and bones A dentist will help you keep your teeth longer throughout your life. Maintaining the bony ridges that support the teeth are important for the health of your teeth and if you’ve lost teeth, the possibility of implant placement into the future. 2. Fight cancer Every hour, someone dies from oral cancer. Only a dentist can do a proper oral exam and catch the signs of oral cancer early. Leave this task to the professionals, and don’t forget that physicians don’t substitute a dentist in this case.

3. Periodontal diseases can be prevented Regular cleanings can prevent this serious gum disease from beginning or spreading to other sites. If periodontal or gum diseases start, they can be treated. This is important, because this is time dependent. No one can reverse severely progressed periodontitis. Since this is usually a pain-less process, it’s important to see a dentist to determine whether or not these diseases are beginning to affect you. The earlier, the better. Periodontal diseases contribute to the development of heart disease, increase the risk of stroke and poses a threat to people who have diabetes, respiratory conditions and osteoporosis.

7. Have a whiter and more attractive smile. This is for obvious reasons. A visit to the dentist can remove most of the common causes of staining. You can take it step further and undergo whitening treatments as well.

4. If periodontal or gum diseases starts, they can be treated.

8. To save money (by detecting dental problems early)

This is important, because this is time dependent. No one can reverse severely progressed periodontitis. Since this is usually a pain-less process, it’s important to see a dentist to determine whether or not these diseases are beginning to affect you. The earlier, the better.

If decay is detected and treated early, it prevents the need for more costly care later, for example, if decay reaches the tooth pulp it would result in the need for root canal therapy. If that same decay was caught earlier, just a small restoration or filling would have been just fine.

5. Periodontal diseases can be turned around (or reversed) in its early stages.

9. To set good standards for your children

This can provide benefits to your health beyond your oral cavity. Periodontal diseases have been noted clinically to contribute to the development of heart disease, increase the risk of stroke, and increase a woman’s risk of having a preterm, low birth weight baby. Additionally, it poses a threat to people who have diabetes, respiratory conditions, and osteoporosis. 6. Your dentist can spot other systemic conditions that you may have earlier than a family doctor including hypertension and diabetes. A dentist can spot things that a physician that doesn’t look into the mouth often can’t.

Having children visit the dentist early on allows the child to develop a positive view of dentists, prevent future fears from forming and additionally, these visits can be quite helpful for other reasons. Orthodontic issues can be settled early, sealants can be placed, and early decay can be detected. 10. Seeing a dentist regularly will save you lost work or leisure time Surveys have shown that poor dental health results in significant lost productivity! Dental pains can keep people from going to work or play. Secondary infections can result in serious sicknesses and dealing with advanced dental diseases means more treatment, because you didn’t see the dentist regularly in the first place.

Survey Shows 90% of Adults Unaware of Men’s Risk for Osteoporosis Osteoporosis can lead to painful fractures, disability and early death, but continues to be ignored by the general public and neglected by doctors during routine physical check-ups New survey findings released on World Osteoporosis Day by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), show that on average, 90% of 13,258 adults questioned are unaware of how common osteoporotic fractures are in men. With one in five men aged 50 years or over affected, the data confirm that although common, serious and potentially lifethreatening, osteoporosis remains a vastly underestimated and neglected health issue. The multi-national survey, carried out in adults from 12 countries showed that this ignorance was universal and independent of gender or geography. Prof. John Kanis, President, IOF, said: “The sad reality is that by not knowing their risk, men are leaving themselves

vulnerable to a future of pain, disability and possibly early death. The problem is being further exacerbated by doctors not addressing the bone health of their patients during routine check-ups.” According to the survey, men in the 50+ age group who had had a check-up were 18% less likely than women of the same age to have any form of bone health assessment.

5 Tips for Staying Healthy on the Road 1. Wash your hands often. Then wash them again. Get into the habit of washing your hands and don’t skimp on the soap. Carry a tube of antibacterial gel for those rare moments when no soap or sink is available. 2. Cooked is more reliable than fresh. Make sure everything is properly cooked. Fried, boiled, or baked, high temperatures kill germs. 3. When in doubt, take it easy on the meat. Meat insidiously turns faster and meaner than vegetables ever will. You never know how meat has been handled or how long it has stood before it lands in your mouth…and your stomach. 4. Look for high turnover and low fly-count. Seek out street stalls and restaurants with a high turnover of food. Freshly cooked is better than something that’s been sitting around on a tray for a while. Eye the fly-count. Flies are excellent carriers of disease. 5. Peel your fruits and vegetables. Buy the kind you can peel – bananas, cucumbers, carrots, papayas, avocados, etc. Avoid anything with a skin you eat.

R4WR – Riding For Women’s Rights Across Thailand (and the world)

Four young Dutch women have passed through Hua Hin on a journey through 22 countries to raise the profile of women’s rights and gender equality. Best Funny Animal Videos

“When we look at our own environment, we see that chances are often taken for granted. The possibilities we get in our home country to study and determine our own future, are denied to women of all ages all around the world. A discrepancy that we cannot and will not accept. It is from this thought that we founded R4WR” Just For Laughs - Wrong Toilet

The four women --Carlijn Bettink, Lidewij Ponjee, Sophie Van Hoof, and Monique van der Veeken --are founders of the Ride 4 Women’s Rights Foundation, who are now riding their red tandem bicycles across 22 countries in an effort to raise awareness on women’s rights. “Though our travels, we’ve seen opportunities are not the same everywhere, and we can’t take our opportunities for granted,” said Bettink, chairman of the foundation.

In every country they visit, they briefly interview women and girls in the cities and rural areas, schools and institutions to find out their stories and give them a voice through the foundation’s social media websites. “We post their profiles on our website. We always present them in a positive way, not negative, in order to raise awareness and hope.” Bettink said. The women say their experiences are very important to their followers back home, since it gives them a chance to see what life is like for women in different countries with different cultures and backgrounds. Their journey began in Jakarta in early September on two red tandem bikes. Their journey continues through 22 countries across Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Western Asia, Eastern Europe and Western Europe in 400 days before journey’s end in the Netherlands.

The 14,000km bicycle-journey is their effort to raise awareness on women’s rights and to understand the opportunities and rights of women in Southeast Asia. The reason this route was chosen was because the mission and focus points are of relevance in the

countries crossed. The three focus points, right to education, right to gender equality and right to family planning are relevant starting points. “Though our travels, we’ve seen opportunities are not the same everywhere, and we can’t take our opportunities for granted,” said Bettink, Chairman of the foundation. On 25th October they arrived in Hua Hin, in the evening they there was a meeting with members of the Rotoract club of the Webster University where they discussed women’s rights. Frances Luns was host for the visiting cyclists. Frances offered them the comforts of her own home, introduced them to local people and groups such as Rotary and Webster University so that so the girls can collect as many information (and donations) they could about local issues related to women’s rights.

As an avid golfer Frances was even able to offer them a golf lesson at Black Mountain as an aside to their more ‘esoteric’ cause. After Two days of charging their ‘cycle batteries’, the four progressed to Bangkok where they were welcomed by Soroptimist Club Members. The Soroptimist Clubs en route will offer hospitality and contact with local people. On 2nd November 2nd the group left on their way to Cambodia. About Soroptimist International: Soroptimist International is committed to a world where women and girls together achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in creating strong, peaceful communities worldwide. Soroptimist International Club of Bangkok has a Facebook page with more information. For more information about R4WR see their Facebook or via their website www.r4wr.org

Constitution Day 2014 and a Big Day Coming For Petchaburi Province

in 1999 and the Administrative Court started operations in March 2001. Since then it has progressively strengthened its operations, making it easier for citizens to lodge their complaints. The Administrative Court’s main jurisdiction is to settle litigation between private citizens and the State; including government ministries, departments and independent agencies. Accordingly the completion of the Petchaburi Administrative Court has direct relevance to Constitution Day. To say the least the new building is impressive. Dubbed by locals as the ‘White House’, it’s easy to see why. The US version of the White House is the official residence and principal workplace of the President of the United States, located in Washington, D.C.

December 10th is a public holiday in Thailand to commemorate Constitution Day. The significance of the date goes back to 1932 and a time of great upheaval in Siam (the former name for Thailand) which resulted in the end of the absolute monarchy. In the early 1930s, the Siamese economy was suffering from the effects of the Great Depression and the monarch, King Prajadhipok (Rama VII), was seen by some as too young and inexperienced to deal with the various problems facing the country. In June 1932, a bloodless

coup was led by a group of intellectuals and military men known as the People’s Party. An ultimatum and a provisional constitution were presented to the King. Despite an initial refusal, the King did sign the charter and in doing so ended the absolute monarchy in Siam. Internal disputes amongst the People’s Party and opposition from the Palace resulted in a new and revised permanent constitution being agreed which was duly signed by King Rama VII on December 10, 1932. The monarchy would no longer have any say in government and instead would be a constitutional monarchy. However,

the sacred and inviolable nature of the monarchy was established. In April this year Cha-Am Today reported on the progress of the new Petchaburi Administrative Court under construction. Construction of the 293 million THB Petchaburi Administrative Court commenced in May last year and is due for completion this month. However the formal opening of the building will not be until 19th January 2015. The Constitutional Court of Thailand was promulgation through the 1997 Thailand Constitution, an enabling Act was passed

The USA White House The Petchaburi ‘White House’ bears a striking resemblance to the original and is a real ‘head turner’ for commuters between Hua Hin and Cha-Am. It’s located about 15 kilometres from Hua Hin on Petchakasim Road (Western side). We’ve made contact with the Director elect of the new Court and hope to have access to the facility and report further next month.

Cha-Am – ‘A World Away From Worries’

That’s the title of the latest Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) Newsroom Report that now features on their website. The recent report vindicates Cha-Am’s claim to being amongst the Kingdom’s top attractions and provides some muchneeded publicity to assist in promoting the future development of tourism here. Amongst the information provided and featured photographs, the report comments on: “Long sandy beaches, fresh, juicy seafood dishes and green hills have helped make millions of happy memories here over the years.”

“So what’s Cha-Am Beach like? Well it is wide and sandy with large umbrellas and low-set seating where you can relax in the shade and snack on seafood. Cha-Am lies parallel to the beach so everyone has a sea view, whether they’re in tall hotels or small bungalows.” “The sea itself teems with life – so you can enjoy fine seafood dinners in the local restaurants – with tasty crabs, squid and shrimps as gigantic as a giant’s thumbs to feast upon.” “Cha-Am is the sort of place where tourists are soon on first-name terms with the locals – who are happy to chat.” “Cha-Am is so relaxed that the only major decision you’ll need to make here is where to have dinner – not a fraught process, as all the restaurants serve excellent seafood.” “If you want a nearby seaside bolt-hole, with a relaxed vibe and fine food, Cha-Am is perfect. What’s more, you’ll be following in the footsteps of three generations of Thai holidaymakers, who are known for taking their beach holidays very seriously.” Our thanks to the TAT for featuring ChaAm; it’s often left off the list on mainstream websites visited by ‘surfers’ wanting to

find out more about where to visit or stay during a Thailand trip. We certainly endorse the Newsroom Report and hope for more promotion to come from the TAT!

HUA HIN TODAY, December 2014

22 News Adjusting to the Move toward the ASEAN Community The Prime Minister explained that the Government would implement measures favorable for increasing trade and foreign investment. At the same time, efforts would be made to reduce trade and legal barriers, as well as make procedures less complicated. Appropriate incentives would be offered to investors, while national interests must be protected. Thailand needs to work out long-term planning in order to move the country forward in the long run.

Thai people have been urged to adjust themselves in the move toward the full implementation of the ASEAN Community in late 2015. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, in his national address, spoke about the importance of readiness for ASEAN integration and rapid changes in the world. In preparation for the ASEAN Community, he said, Thailand must strengthen its capacity on a sustainable basis and develop human resources in terms of education, employment, and language skills. This will help cope with growing trade and investment and greater competition. It will also enable the country to keep pace with development in neighboring countries, the ASEAN region, and the world at large. Moreover, he said, large, medium-sized, and small businesses should adopt modern technology and support one another. They should also strengthen their networks, use

more domestic raw materials, promote Thai wisdom, and create Thailand’s brands, so that they would be able to open up new markets and compete more effectively with other countries.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda has instructed all provincial governors to prepare for the ASEAN Community. He said that the provinces that share borders with neighboring countries and are located in special economic zones must work with the private sector in developing infrastructure and market channels. The Government will establish special economic zones in five provinces by

December 2014. The five provinces include Tak, Mukdahan, Songkhla, Sa Kaeo, and Trat. More special economic zones will be established in 2015 and 2016 in such provinces as Chiang Rai, Kanchanaburi, Nong Khai, and Nakhon Phanom. The special economic zones will boost Thailand’s border trade and prepare for the arrival of the ASEAN Community. The Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board has worked out strategies that will enable Thailand to be ready for the ASEAN Community. The strategies seek to enhance Thailand’s competitiveness and involve the development of quality of life, social protection, infrastructure and logistics, and human resources. They also seek to improve laws and regulations, create better understanding and awareness of ASEAN, enhance security, and increase potential for greater opportunities from ASEAN connectivity.

TAT lists 22 best places to see beautiful flowers in Thailand The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has listed 22 best places to see beautiful flowers in Thailand under the ‘Dream Destinations 2’ domestic tourism marketing campaign. TAT Governor Mr. Thawatchai Arunyik said, “Last year’s inauguration of the Dream Destinations campaign was a success. For this year, we continue the project with a new highlight – flowers. Thailand is a tropical country, and there are plenty of exotic tropical flowers to appreciate and enjoy in different locations every month of the year.” The 22 best places to see beautiful flowers in Thailand have been categorised in a calendar of seasonal flowers that bloom in different regions and at different periods throughout the year. Bike Across Thailand

It’s a menu item that would make any Australian recoil in horror. The platypus is one of the country’s classic animal symbols, a national treasure and an endangered species of native animal protected by Australian law. However, there it was listed on a Cha-Am restaurant menu – ‘Fried Platypus’; at only 80 THB! We are happy to report that this was just a very bad translation. The platypus is sometimes called a ‘duck-billed platypus’ because of the shape of the muzzle which resembles the bill of a duck. The Thai language version of the dish is a delicacy referring to the tasty part at the base of a duck’s bill, so in Thai - ‘fried duck bill’.

The restaurant owner was also horrified when we explained the error. He was very eager to reassure customers that platypus is definitely not on the menu. We agreed not to report him to the wildlife authorities! Join dozens of cyclists who will bicycle across Thailand on Thursday 18th December. Leaving at 11:am at the Thai-Burma border at Singkhon near Prachuapkhirikhan it is all downhill to the Thai Air Force 5th Wing at beautiful Ao Manao where you reward yourself for winning this challenging achievement with some refreshments at the food court on the beach. All you need is a functioning bicycle and the desire to ride completely across

news 23 Elephant ‘kidnaps’ tourists Barbecue Safety The Griller Inside Every Man The weather is glorious and barbecue smells have started drifting over fences each evening, awakening the cooking instincts of men through the neighbourhood. There’s something primal about barbecues that appeals to men. Perhaps the smell of cooking steak sparks a link back to caveman ancestors who hunted woolly mammoths and tossed chunks of meat into the coals of a fire to sizzle. Although women can be excellent outdoor cooks, it’s widely accepted as the territory of men. A bloke with only a hazy idea of how to operate the kitchen appliances will confidently stride outside to the barbie, briskly snap his tongs and start turning sausages.

An elephant trampled its handler to death and ran off with two Russian tourists — a mother and her nine-year-old daughter; who were riding it during a trek in southern Thailand, police have reported. Rescue teams tracked the elephant about 3 km away and tranquillised it to rescue the tourists clinging to its back, police said, adding the animal began attacking the 60-yearold handler soon after the start of what was supposed to be a scenic ride for the tourists near a waterfall.

Thailand Crowned Asian Beach Games Champions 2014

We have the perfect recipe of great weather mixed with an outdoor lifestyle but unfortunately the summer barbecue season is also linked to a rise is food poisoning cases. Food poisoning is usually mild and most people recover quickly but it can be severe or even deadly, especially to children, older people and those with weakened immune systems, so the risks must be taken seriously. A quick review of food safety is worthwhile as the barbie season hots up. The big risks are undercooked meat and germs spreading from raw meat onto food that’s ready to eat. Raw and undercooked meat can contain germs that cause food poisoning, such as salmonella, E. coli and campylobacter – but the germs can be killed by cooking meat right through. The most basic step is to wash hands. It’s especially important after handling raw meat because germs can easily move onto your hands and then anything else you touch, including food that is cooked and ready to eat.

Thailand closed the final day of the 4th Asian Beach Games on 23rd November in Phuket with two more gold medals in the beach sepak takraw to be crowned official Games champions for the second time with a haul of 56 gold, 37 silver and 33 bronze medals. Defending champions China placed second overall, with 16 gold, 11 silver and 21 bronze medals. Third place went to South Korea, with 9 gold, 14 silver and 14 bronze medals, while Iran (9-14-8) and Vietnam (8-12-10) finished fourth and

fifth, respectively. On the final day of competition, Thailand won gold in both the men’s and the women’s regular beach sepak takraw. A total of 57.73 million baht will be paid out to all Thai medalists, their coaches and the sports associations they represent. The National Sports Development Fund stands to pay out a total of 39.3mn baht to Thai athletes who won medals at the games: 200,000 baht to each gold medalist, 100,000 baht to each silver medalist and 50,000 baht to each bronze medalist.

This cross contamination also happens when people walk out to the barbie with a plate of raw meat and then put the food back on the same plate once it has been cooked. The raw meat juices mix with the cooked meat and can lead to an uncomfortable night clutching the loo bowl.

This rookie mistake can easily be avoided if there are plenty of clean utensils and platters outside, ready to use. It’s also important to keep some types of food cool because the bacteria that cause food poisoning can multiply quickly in warm temperatures. Always keep raw meat cold and don’t leave salads, dairy products, dips, cooked meat and rice out in the sun for long. Put them in the fridge. Then, the rules are the same for cooking any kind of meat whether it’s chicken, pork, steak or burgers. Make sure your barbie is hot, frozen meat has been properly thawed and turn or move it around regularly to cook it evenly. Meat is safe to eat when it is hot right through to the middle, there is no pink meat and any juices run clear. Of course, lots of people like to eat their steak or lamb rare and nicely pink in the centre and that’s fine as long as the outside has been properly cooked because that will kill any bacteria that might be on it. But poultry and minced meat like sausages and burgers should be thoroughly cooked all the way through. Finally, keep fire safety in mind. Make sure your barbecue is level and steady, away from plants and trees. Keep your barbecue properly maintained and check gas cylinders and connections. Have a garden hose or supply of water ready and use the barbecue in a wellventilated area so no one is breathing nasty fumes and gas. Maybe our hunter ancestors never worried about health and safety when they chucked a mammoth steak on a campfire - but maybe they did. If they invited a nearby tribe for dinner and made everyone sick it could have ended in war.

Launch of global Ivory Free Campaign WildAid, in partnership with the Kenyanbased African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) and former National Basketball Association (NBA) player and Olympian Yao Ming, the Discovery Channel Global initiative ‘SAVING AFRICA’S GIANTS WITH YAO MING’ is a documentary looking at the extremely concerning worldwide crisis of poaching and trafficking of elephant ivory and rhinoceros horn. About 33,000 African elephants are killed yearly for their tusks. The elephant populations of West and Central Africa have been devastated, herds have been targeted in East Africa and the crisis is spreading South. WildAid Executive Director Peter Knights said poaching is a global problem that requires global solutions, from both individuals and governments The new campaign asks consumers to pledge to never buy, own or accept illegal ivory as gifts, and to support

stronger government bans and actions to tackle the illegal ivory trade. An adaptation of the campaign for the Thai market, involving local ambassadors, will be rolled out per January 2015. This campaign will raise awareness and support current government with the development and implementation of their National Ivory Action Plan. In the documentary ‘SAVING AFRICA’S GIANTS WITH YAO MING’, Discovery Channel worked with Yao Ming and WildAid to uncover the brutal secrets of this multi-million dollar underground trade, and spotlights Yao Ming’s mission to educate and inspire his countrymen and the world in the effort to stop the killings and save these innocent creatures from the very real possibility of extinction. You Can’t Overlook Khao Hin Lek Fai

Relax, Relax, Relax The level area at the peak covers 140 acres of public park. If you are not into exercise, Hin Lek Fai is also a great place to just relax. Bring a good book to read or just enjoy some quiet time away from the bustle of the city. Weekends are always the busiest times, so go during the week if you want to have some time alone.

It’s a ‘must see’ local attraction that many ‘don’t see’! Not only the weekend visitor or holiday maker, but many people who have spent years living in in Hua Hin have only looked up at the hill, rather down over the panoramic landscape and ‘cityscape’ below. Hua Hin Today may also have been ignoring the obvious. We have had many stories about happenings such as concerts, cycling and running/jogging events; but not about the reasons why everyone should climb the hill! Here’s why! HUA HIN TODAY, December 2014

Views, Views, View There are six viewpoints on Khao Hin Lek Fai each overlooking different parts of Hua Hin and surrounds. Viewpoint 4 is a large purpose built platform facing south with a great view all the way to Khao Takiab. Viewpoint 5 is of the north towards ChaAm. Viewpoint 2 overlooks Hua Hin town centre and the ocean.

How to Get There It is situated about 3km west of the town centre. Follow Chomsin Road (Soi 70) over the railway line and instead of bearing right with the road to Pala U, keep going straight ahead. It’s a steep climb to the top. Soi 88 is an alternative route. The park area is open from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm and admission is free. There is an ample car park at the top. GPS location: GPS – N 12 33.590, E 99 56.449. You just can’t overlook Hin Lek Fai; that is unless you take a helicopter ride!

Cover story 25 How to Set Up Your Own DIY Photo Booth From wedding receptions to baby showers to birthday parties, photo booths are a must to get to make your receptions more fun. Skip the expensive rental booth and create a one-of-a-kind booth for your Christmas party or New Year’s Eve with our step-by-step instructions. Photography Options: 1- It can be a digital camera, your tablet, in these options you will have to get someone behind or simply use a tripod. 2- Using your computer, you will have to set it up on high level or a bar counter. 3- Using an instant camera: By far the easiest option, although it’s also the most expensive since you have to buy film ; lots and lots of film. The Backdrop

Start with your own closet: that furry scarf you got as gift but never wore, ask your friends to scavenge their own closets for similar items. Get into our Facebook page and you will be able to Download our collection of printable props in Christmas and New Years’s theme, and assemble them before your party starts. Have a look below on how to make them. Lots of choices for using a Christmas theme as the holiday background! Consider a Christmas Tree, colorful presents, or snow falling. The New York Eve’s famous ball drop is a popular background, as well as silver/gold stars/fireworks/ribbons, and party favors. Mount the camera, tablet or instant camera on the tripod and place it a few feet away from the wall. Frame the shot and angle the camera accordingly. Ask someone to stand in front of the camera while you frame the shot. Using painters tape, make an X on the floor to mark the spot for the tripod and the center and outer limits where guests can stand for photos. Assemble a prop station and display items guests can grab easily to pose with. A practical way to decorate the prop table without adding unnecessary items to the surface is to hang objects from the ceiling using twine and push pins. Make a simple signboard instructing guests to pick a prop and strike a pose and place it near the prop table.

Materials: - jumbo craft sticks or barbecue wood sticks - card stock - printable photo booth prop templates

This is where you get to show off your creative skills. A printed fabric backdrop is most common, but why limit yourself to store-bought options? Make one that adds life to the photos, it can be garlands, flowers, piece of fabrics... The Props

The Photo Booth Party:

Tools: - tape or glue gun - color printer - scissors - cutter

Be sure your camera has ample battery life and memory card space for the party, and be sure to have backups on hand. Tell guests about the photo booth when they enter your party and demonstrate how it works by snapping a few photos with each guest. Then, let guests use their creativity to experiment with props and poses.

These are great for a work party, a family gathering or just some fun times at home with friends.

Instructions: 1. Print the easy-to-use templates. 2. Cut out each item. 3. Stick pictures to the craft sticks using tape or glue gun.

After the party, create an online album of all the shots from the photo booth, or send each guest a print as a thank you note or keepsake favor. DIY CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR PROPS

A variety of props keeps things fun and guests interested. Don’t know where to look for props? HUA HIN TODAY, December 2014

A Japanese-Singaporean joint venture has won the contract to build the USD1.5 billion Hanthawaddy International Airport located north of Yangon. The bid winner — a consortium comprised of Singaporean firms Yongnam Holdings Ltd. and Changi Airport Planners and Engineers (CAPE), as well as Japan’s JGC Corporation was announced at a recent press conference. The contract for the airport was put out to tender in February 2013 for the first time, but was re-opened for tender a year later after the government was unhappy with the terms proposed by the initial tender winner. A South Korean conglomerate, won the first tender in August 2013, but negotiations on lending terms for the project broke down and the government rescinded on the contract. The Civil Aviation Department general director, Win Swe Tun, was quoted as saying that the recent offer was more attractive to the country government and reduced the risk for the nation.

Yongnam said it would take around four years to construct the airport and the airport should open in December 2019. Hanthawaddy International Airport will be located at the site of an old airport near the town of Pegu, about 50 miles north of Yangon. Yangon International Airport lacks available space for a major expansion and the government says a new international airport is needed as the country welcomes more tourists and business visitors. Upon completion, Hanthawaddy International Airport will have the capacity to handle 12 million travellers a year. Yangon International Airport is also being upgraded and will be able to handle up to 6 million travellers a year when the expansion is complete in 2016. However, there will be three critical years when Yangon airport’s capacity will be stretched to accommodate growth until the new airport opens and takes over the role as the main gateway.

„Was Baby ?

HUA HIN TODAY, December 2014

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR ! .......................Eure Dizzy Lizzy Bizzy NEXT M.C.C. EVENT IS 28TH DECEMBER AT HILTON HUA HIN.

news 31 Thailand To Build One of The World’s Tallest Skyscrapers

Qatar Airways to start A380 service to Bangkok in January 2015

The highly acclaimed A380 will commence operations to the popular Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok in January 2015 Qatar Airways A380 aircraft will soon touchdown in Bangkok, Thailand, following the overwhelming success of its inaugural service to London Heathrow introduced earlier this month. Higher than a bird, almost as high as some planes. It’s Super Tower. And it’s coming to Bangkok. A Thai property developer has announced plans to build a skyscraper in the Thai capital that will be among the 10 tallest buildings in the world when it is completed in 2019. The 125-floor tower will rise 615 metres (2,018 feet) and include a luxury hotel, offices and an observation deck with panoramic views of the Thai capital, developer Grand Canal Land Public Company Ltd. said in a statement. According to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, which maintains a

database of the tallest skyscrapers, the Bangkok “Super Tower” will be the world’s ninth tallest if it is built on schedule. It would be the second tallest if built today. The developer intends the tower as the centre of a new business, shopping and residential district in Bangkok costing 100 billion baht. The ambitious plans are a vote of confidence in the Thai economy, which has lost much of its dynamism and struggled to grow during several years of political strife. The tallest building in the world is currently Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, which has 163 floors and is 828 metrres (2,717 feet) high.

Beginning January 5, 2015, passengers travelling to and from Bangkok on Qatar Airways QR836/QR833 will enjoy outstanding levels of comfort and service on the new A380. The aircraft’s state-ofthe-art technology will provide a unique and enhanced travel experience by setting new benchmarks for all the key qualities related to passenger well-being.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, said: “Bangkok is one of the most popular destinations for travellers around the world, and we recongise the importance of offering convenience coupled with our five-star service to passengers flying to Bangkok from Doha’s Hamad International Airport. “Thanks to its popularity we have witnessed a steady growth in terms of the number of passengers flying to Bangkok over the years. Additionally, the number of Thai passengers who travel with us to destinations around the world has also increased significantly. Therefore, we are very much looking forward to kicking off the new year by introducing our new A380 aircraft to Bangkok and providing these passengers with our signature service.”

Participants will include the health ministers and senior health officials of the ASEAN Plus Three Member States, namely Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Japan, and Korea. The 2014 outbreak of Ebola in West Africa is one of the largest Ebola outbreaks in history. It has continued to escalate, killing thousands of patients and causing serious social and economic impacts in the affected countries. Thailand remains on high alert against this disease, although there have been no reported Ebola cases in the country.

32 Motoring The 31st Annual Thailand International Motor Expo Despite Thailand’s automobile market having to plough through a series of nasty road humps, as much as Bt54 billion is expected to be generated in sales during the upcoming 31st Thailand International Motor Expo. The Annual event is anticipated to likely to see 1.5 million visitors. Kwanchai Paphatphong, the organiser of the event which takes place at the Challenger Hall in Muangthong Thani from November 29-December 10, says as many as 40 automobile brands from 13 countries will be present, along with 11 motorcycle brands at the year’s last auto exhibition and sales extravaganza. The Motor Expo marks the final buying season of the year, with auto companies tripping over one another to offer attractive sales promotions and launch swanky new models. “The highlight that should not be missed is the global premiere of an all-new model,” Kwanchai said. Japanese automaker Mazda is planning to unveil the sedan version of the new Mazda2 at this year’s show, according to industry insiders. The new Mazda2, powered by a 1.5-litre Skyactiv diesel engine, is the first model to be made under the government’s Eco-Car Phase 2 project. HUA HIN TODAY, December 2014

World Superbikes is 99.9% certain to visit Thailand in 2015 It is ‘99.9 per cent’ certain Thailand will be included on the World Superbike Championship calendar for the first time in 2015.

Other models expected to gain strong interest from buyers are the Honda HR-V, Nissan X-Trail and Mitsubishi Triton. Kwanchai said that this year 1.5 million people (up from last year’s 1.38 million) are expected to visit the expo, while auto sales will peak at 50,000 vehicles (up from 41,000 in 2013). Thailand’s auto market has been hit hard this year by the political situation, a slowing economy and strict loan approvals by finance companies. Sales from January to September dived off the cliff by more than 37 per cent to 648,410 vehicles, and many expect the year to end at slightly over 900,000 vehicles. The car market this year has slowed by as much as 45 per cent to just 273,000, while the commercial vehicle market has fallen by 30 per cent to 309,034.

Having spoken of its intention to take World Superbikes to new and emerging markets in the future, Thailand’s Chang International Circuit and Chile’s venue in Codegua emerged as front runners to secure a spot on the provisional calendar for 2015, while this year’s canned events in South Africa and Russia were also still believed to be vying for a spot on the schedule. However, speaking at the final round of the 2014 World Superbike Championship in Qatar, Executive Director Javier Alonso says, of the four, only Thailand’s new venue, located in Buriram 400km north of Bangkok, is certain for 2015. “I would say it is 99.9 per cent [certain to be included],” he said. “I was there two

weeks ago - the race track is ready and that was the most important thing, the race track can host an event. We asked them for some small modifications but the reality is it can be homologated tomorrow. Since then we have been working on the contract and the deal is almost done. We are still working on some small pieces, but it will be announced soon.” Should Thailand go on to be confirmed, it is expected to fill the sizeable gap between the Phillip Island season opener in February and the start of the European leg.

35 AirAsia Introduces The ‘Asean Pass’ AirAsia, the region’s largest low-cost carrier has announced its own air pass called the AirAsia Asean Pass, which will enable travelers to utilise pre-purchased credits to book flights at a fixed-rate across selected routes throughout ASEAN. A credit-based system acts like a single currency which diminishes the hassle due to differing foreign exchange rates as routes are valued according to credits. Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, Group CEO of AirAsia said, “We are proud of being a true Asean airline, serving all 10 ASEAN member countries. With the dawning of the ASEAN Economic Community and progress on ASEAN Open Skies, we are pleased to

promote Asean integration by helping to bridge Asean communities. The ASEAN Single Aviation Market (ASAM) is something we take seriously and we are confident the introduction of this Asean Pass will boost air travel within the Asean communities, as well as attract foreign tourists to this region.” “The most convenient way to move around Asean is by air, given that we live in places separated by large bodies of water, as well as being home to the two largest archipelago nations in the world – Indonesia and the Philippines. The challenge was to make air travel affordable, and AirAsia has lived up to our promise so far; but it’s time to push the envelope further and the Asean Pass will be

the catalyst for a new chapter of air travel with AirAsia,” added Fernandes. AirAsia Asean Pass holders will be able to purchase flights to over 137 routes throughout Asean with these credits, which provides them with great value as they are guaranteed to able to fly at very low rates within Asean. The list of routes featured in the Asean Pass will be from 1 credit up to a maximum of 8 credits one way. The pass will also come with numerous benefits, including BIG points which can be used to redeem free AirAsia flights. The AirAsia Asean Pass will be made available for booking on airasia.com when it is launched in January.

For more updates about the AirAsia Asean Pass, visit the AirAsia website at airasia.com).

Gender Inequality In Thailand – National Review Report Although women in Thailand enjoy a relatively high degree of freedom, gender inequality still manifests itself in violence, trafficking, stereotypical attitudes to employment and gender-related roles, the latest national review on progress in gender equality submitted by the Thai government to the United Nations showed. The report was submitted under a process dubbed “Beijing+20 Review”. “The biggest challenge is that some people are still not fully aware of direct and indirect gender discrimination and substantive gender equality in society. In addition, some media reproduce stereotypes of women and men. Raising awareness and improving the status of women are our main priorities in the Women Development Plan,” the 51-page national review on the progress and challenges in bridging the gender equality gap recently submitted by the Thai government stated. This voluntary submission was part of

Thailand’s commitment to realise gender equality under 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

The report cited the need to tackle sexism, gender bias and gender-related stereotypes that may exist in school textbooks, adding that if such stereotypes go unchallenged, “these negative norms of behaviour and attitude could be institutionalised and gradually become part of our social and cultural code”. Other remaining challenges in bridging gender inequality include tackling what the report refers to as the “feminisation of poverty”. ‘Deadlock on legalising abortion’ “Factors contributing to poorer women are limitations of access to resources and services, such as credit, land, assets, education and training, information, welfare, as well as salary gap. Labour mobility,

specifically the migration of male family members into big cities, divorces, pregnancy out of wedlock, neglectful husbands and the fact that more women prefer to remain single are some of the reasons,” the report said. “This is partly due to the fact that women in Thailand are still under-represented in decision-making and high-administrative positions, both at local and national levels. “As a result, many decisions on important issues or areas are based on insufficient gender perspectives and consideration, such as the allocation of micro credit, utilisation of the Village Fund, or the selection process of participants in the new vocational training programmes.”

In 2011, women accounted for just 16 per cent, or 79 out of 500 parliamentary seats, even though women constitute more than half of the Kingdom’s population. Paweena

Subhimaros, a social development officer at the Bureau of Gender Equality Promotion, pointed out that one issue where Thailand was at a deadlock is on the legalisation of abortion. Paweena, whose bureau comes under the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, took part in last week’s Asia-Pacific regional meeting organised by UN Women and UN Escap in Bangkok with some 50 countries participating. The review also listed achievements such as the fact that there is an even number of women and men on social media in the country, with Facebook accounting for some 51 per cent women and 49 per cent men. It also cited the setting up of a “lady parking” area in Suvarnabhumi Airport, with 450 slots in August, as well as the “lady zone” cluster of seats for women passengers on the Nakhonchai inter-province buses.

Year-Long Celebrations to Mark Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s 60th Birthday The year 2015 is considered a significant year for Thailand, as it marks the auspicious occasion of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s fifth cycle, or 60th, birthday anniversary. As a tribute to the Princess, the Government will hold year-long celebrations from 1st January to 31st December 2015. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on 3rd November 2014 chaired the first meeting of the National Commission on the Celebrations, with the Permanent Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office as member and secretary. The meeting acknowledged the title in English for the celebrations: “The Celebrations on the Auspicious Occasion of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s 5th Cycle Birthday Anniversary 2nd April 2015.” It was told that the Office of Traditional Arts, under the Fine Arts Department, had designed the ceremonial emblem in accordance with the advice given by Her Royal Highness. The Government has asked the Office of His Majesty’s Principal Private Secretary to submit the emblem to His Majesty the King for permission to use it for the celebrations. The meeting also acknowledged various projects and activities in honor of Her Royal Highness on this special occasion. Both public and private organizations that want to join the celebrations are urged to send their projects and activities to the screening committee for consideration.

The Bureau of the Royal Household will organize a royal merit-making ceremony to celebrate the 60th birthday anniversary of Her Royal Highness. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has been assigned to hold a ceremony of giving alms to monks, as part of the celebrations. Various agencies and organizations, as well as the general public, have been invited to display on their offices and houses a purple flag with the ceremonial emblem on the celebrations from 1 January to 31 December 2015. Purple is the color of Saturday, the birthday of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The public will also be invited to wear purple shirts, with the ceremonial emblem, as an expression of love and respect for Her Royal Highness. The Fine Arts Department has been assigned to be responsible for documentation and historical records on this occasion. Prime Minister Prayut also urged the public to buy commemorative pins on the occasion of the 60th birthday anniversary celebrations. Reservations for the pins can be made at the Office of the Permanent Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office in Bangkok and at the town halls of all provinces, as well as all branches of Krung Thai Bank. Each pin is priced at 300 baht. Proceeds from the sale will go to Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Foundation to provide scholarships for needy children and youths.

36 Spa & Health Five Star Relaxation at The ‘DaySpa’, Putahracsa! When it is time for some “me time”, a spa treatment is one of the best gifts you can give to yourself. And what is better than a 5 star spa! This time my choice was Day Spa at Putahracsa; a beautiful contemporary interior with exotic design touches. I always love to try the signature treatment at a spa resort and this time it was a fantastic match with my needs. My choice was first the “ocean salt scrub” for 40 minutes and to continue I tried “the Putahracsa lava massage” for 90 minutes. My therapist Khun Nana guided me to my treating room which had an essential ocean fragrance and the temperature was exactly what your body needs to relax. I was already relaxed when Khun Nana started applying to my body the ocean salt scrub with botanic oil. Her smooth movements make the scrub even more pleasant than is usual. After I removed the scrub with a hot shower that my therapist prepared, I started my second session which was “the Lava Massage”. This signature massage is based on traditional Ayuraveda care, fused with Asian techniques using pure natural ingredients melted from hot massage candles. This stimulates blood circulation, provides relieve from daily stress and promotes the elasticity of your skin as well as preventing oxidation of the skin. I had one of the best massage experiences, my skin so smooth and my body so relaxed that it was hard for me to return to my busy day. Vanadium can be found in fish, olive and grain. Vanadium also acts similar to the hormone insulin and has been used to treat diabetes in alternative medicine. However, if you are a diabetic, do not use vanadium therapy by yourself because it may cause your blood sugar levels to drop too quickly which will cause problems afterward. Those with diabetes should consult a doctor before any use of Vanadium.
