Big Budget For Hua Hin Development S

ubsequent to the Mayor, Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul, asking for proposals for budget planning with a policy of promoting tourism in Hua Hin for purchasing new materials and urban improvement, he has announced the budget for urban development in Hua Hin in 2014. This is aimed to improve living conditions for people in Hua Hin and to boost municipal works. Included are new water supply trucks and microphone-equipped cars for public relations campaigns, installing more CCTVs, buying walkie-talkies for municipal officials,

renovating offices of the Hua Hin Municipality and improving the Chat Chai Market.

Nine million THB of the total budget will now be spent on water trucks for fire extinguishment and providing water for areas in need. An allocation of 384,000 THB will be used for chainsaws to cut down trees during natural disasters, 700,000 THB for 32 CCTVs to be installed, 240,000 THB for walkie-talkies for municipal officials and 8 million THB on multipurposed cars to be used for public relations campaigns. Some of the budget will be also used to improve Chat Chai Market and renovate the offices of the Hua Hin Municipality. The total budget for all these activities will be over 50 million THB. Mr. Nopporn also asked all Chief Officers to monitor the budget expenses carefully as they will audited in the future.

Besides improving Chat Chai Market, especially its wastewater management, the Hua Hin Municipality is planning to renovate the market and promote it as the second local market in Hua Hin. The renovation will be be carried out by a private company. In relation to processing garbage in Thab Tai, the Mayor said that he has asked a private company to resolve the problem by processing garbage into raw material suitable for electricity generation. This work will be at no cost to the Municipality. Mr. Nopporn asked all public officers in Hua Hin to work cooperatively and actively help the administrative office of the Municipality, particularly for Annual Events in Hua Hin. All public offices should send their representatives to attend such Events.

SWITCH FROM ANALOGUE

TO DIGITAL TV STARTS THIS MONTH

F

rom February this year the broadcasting industry in Thailand will be reshaped after the birth of digital terrestrial TV channels for 22 million households. This will change the way we view content from free TV channels with more choice and better viewing experiences.

From about February 24th 2014 new digital, terrestrial, commercial channels will take to the airwaves. Some of these will be operated by leading content providers, namely GMM Grammy, RS, Workpoint Entertainment, the Nation Group, Post Publishing, Amarin Group, True Visions and the publisher of Thai Rath, Daily News and Siam Sport newspapers. Existing analogue broadcasters such as Bangkok Entertainment, the operator of Channel 3; Bangkok Broadcasting and Television, the operator of Channel 7; and MCOT, operator of Modernine TV, will also transform themselves into digital operators by offering channels for particular audiences. For example MCOT aims to have its own children’s channels.

Twenty Four Digital TV Channels Will Be Divided Into Four Groups.

The first group is variety TV with a high definition (HD) service. There are seven channels in this category. The second group is called variety TV with channels in a standard definition (SD) service. There are also seven channels in this group. The third group also has seven channels in SD for news programmes. The remaining three in the fourth group are set for producing TV programmes for children and families. These will also be telecast in SD.

After the transition from analogue to digital terrestrial TV begins, we will learn more about functions of public broadcasting services on top of their experience with Thai Public Broadcasting Service (Thai PBS). Continued on Page...4

Makha Bucha Day February 14th

This important day on the Thailand calendar commemorates two separate events that occurred on the same date 45 years apart, during the Buddha’s lifetime 2,500 years ago. On February 14th this year, Buddhists across Thailand celebrate Makha Bucha Day, one of the most important Buddhist holidays in the kingdom. Many private and public organisations have plans to mark this holy holiday.

The first event was the coming together of 1,250 monks from all locations and directions, to meet and be ordained by the Buddha. This event occurred seven months after the Buddha began his teaching. The second event, which occurred 45 years later, was the Buddha delivering his teachings shortly before his death. Both of these events occurred on the day of the full moon of the third lunar month, a month known in the Buddhist Pali language as ‘Makha’. The ‘Bucha’, also a Pali word, means to venerate or to honour. Makha Bucha Day is for the veneration of Buddha and his teachings on the full moon day of the third lunar month. Makha Bucha Day represents a great deal in terms of the development of Buddhism in Thailand. It is a highly ceremonial event and in Thailand it’s an event that was only recently revived as part of Thai Buddhist tradition. The Supreme Patriarch of the Marble Temple in Bangkok, Kittsobhana Mahathera, did this in 1957. GROUP ORDINATIONS Numerous temples and religious centres nationwide will organise a group ordination to celebrate Makha Bucha Day. Male Buddhists may take part in a group ordination at various temples or religious centres. MASS MEDIATION Apart from making merit and listening to sermons at temples during Makha Bucha Day, Buddhists are also encouraged to mediate and pray in commemoration of the Lord Buddha’s Buddhist teachings.

...Continued from Page 1 Under the NBTC’s broadcasting master plan, 12 channels are reserved for public services. These include Thai PBS and two state-run TV broadcasters - the Army’s TV5 and NBT, the channel run by the Public Relations Department (PRD). In the near future, TV5 will transform to be a public TV station for national security, while NBT will change to public relations. The transition will also provide communication channels for each community in the country to own and participate in broadcasting services by community-based digital terrestrial TV channels. The NBTC has reserved about 20 per cent of total available radio frequency for this purpose.

In the morning many Thai people wake up early to give alms to monks. In the evening, temples are full of people listening to sermons. They often perform a ritual known as the candle ceremony where they walk clockwise three times around the temple holding flowers, incense and a lighted candle. As part of the observance, Thai Buddhists are encouraged to do their best to observe the “Five Precepts (Rub Sil’),” even for just the next couple of days. The “Five Precepts,” which is the basic Buddhism code of ethics and is a practice of renunciation, tells Buddhists to abstain from harming any living thing; from stealing; from taking intoxicants; from backbiting, gossiping and telling lies; and from engaging in immoral sex. Devout Buddhists may also observe additional precepts during the period. They will abstain from eating after midday; from using a soft chair or a high bed and from wearing ornaments or perfume, and from public entertainment, dancing, or singing. Those who observe these precepts strictly, practice meditation and mental discipline, stay in the temple, wear white robes, and eat only vegetarian food for a number of days. For visitors to Thailand, “Makha Bucha Day” presents a great opportunity to observe firsthand the Thais’ religious practices and the local lifestyle.

Besides having more choice and more participation, audiences will also enjoy high quality pictures and sound from digital TV, even programmes telecast in SD service. Broadcasts via a digital system will support a 16:9 widescreen display, and for viewers it will be like enjoying a movie at the cinema. Another important benefit is that digital TV signals penetrate into areas that analogue signals can’t reach, such as inside a tall building.

language, as well as emergency warnings. However, before getting access to these new services, people must purchase an integrated digital TV (iDTV) set or digital TV set-top box. An iDTV is a television set with built-in digital TV tuner. Viewers will also be able to use a digital TV settop box to convert digital signals to analogue for old TV sets.

With digital technology, TV broadcasters can not only provide better quality service, they will also be able to offer new “cutting edge” services such as TV on mobiles, interactive TV, three-dimension TV (3D) and multimedia and data broadcasts.

To make this transition smooth and fast the NBTC plans to give subsidy coupons to all households, approximately 22 million across the country. Discount coupons valued at about 690 THB per household will help people buy an iDTV set or a set-top box.

Natee Sukonrat, Chairman of the NBTC’s Broadcasting Committee, said: “The benefit of digital terrestrial TV is that the digital content can interface with different platforms such as online, on mobile and on air.”

In 2013 there were about half a million iDTV sets and digital TV set-top boxes available. The NBTC expects the distribution to discount coupons to begin in about April while the country’s first digital TV channels will go on-air in February. In the near future equipment and TV sets used for analogue broadcasts will not be sold.

People will get access to digital TV programmes anywhere and anytime. Viewers will also be able to listen to digital radio via TV sets and watch archived TV programmes via digital ondemand services. The NBTC Commissioner Supinya Klangnarong said digital terrestrial TV was equipped with an assertive technology for disabled and elderly people. This includes audio descriptions, with spoken subtitling, closed captions and sign

At the 10th Conference of Asean Ministers in Vientiane in 2009, Ministers responsible for information agreed that Asean should adopt a phased “switch off” of analogue from 2015 to 2020. The Analogue Era of TV in Thailand is drawing to a close!

VALENTINE’S DAY HISTORY

E

Yummy Corner

very February 14th, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious Saint and why do we celebrate this holiday?

Fun Facts In the United States Miss Esther Howland is given credit for sending the first valentine cards. Commercial valentines were introduced in the 1800’s and now ... well ...

We’ve found 2 different legends ...

Approximately 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.) Women purchase approximately 85 per cent of all valentines.

The first legend, and perhaps the best known began in Rome when the Emperor, Claudius II, was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. “Claudius the Cruel” as he was called, was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that Roman men did not want to leave their love-ones or families. So, he cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome! The good Saint Valentine, who was a priest in Rome in the year 269 A.D., together with his friend Saint Marius, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered he was sentenced to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. But while in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl who may have been his jailor’s daughter, who visited him during his confinement. Before his death on the 14th day of February it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed “ From your Valentine” . In 496 A.D., Pope Gelasius set aside February 14thto honour St. Valentine. Another legend says that Valentine’s Day started in ancient Rome, on February 14th, a holiday to honour Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. Thefollowing day, February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia. In those days, the lives of young boys and girls were strictly separate. However, on the eve of the Festival of Lupercalia, the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars. Each young man would draw a girl’s name from the jar and would then be partners for the duration of the Festival with the girl that he chose. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year and often they would fall in love and would later marry. What’s Cupid Got to Do with It? According to Roman mythology, Cupid was the son of Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. Cupid was known to cause people to fall in love by shooting them with his magical arrows. But Cupid didn’t just cause others to fall in love - he himself fell deeply in love. As legend has it, Cupid fell in love with a mortal maiden named Psyche. Cupid married Psyche, but Venus, jealous of Psyche’s beauty, forbade her daughter-in-law to look at Cupid. Psyche couldn’t resist temptation and sneaked a peek at her handsome husband. As punishment, Venus demanded that she perform three hard tasks, the last of which caused Psyche’s death. Cupid brought Psyche back to life and the Gods, moved by their love, granted Psyche immortality. Cupid thus represents the heart and Psyche the (struggles of the) human soul.

In order of popularity, Valentine’s Day cards are given to: teachers, children, mothers, wives and sweethearts. Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages, though written Valentine’s didn’t begin to appear until after 1400. The oldest known valentine still in existence today is a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. The greeting is now part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England. Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois. In addition to the United States, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France and Australia. In Great Britain, Valentine’s Day began to be popularly celebrated around the 17th century. By the middle of the 18th, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by 1900 printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one’s feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine’s Day greetings. Valentine’s Day Superstitions & Traditions Every February 14th, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? Having been celebrated for many hundreds of years there are many, many superstitions and traditions linked to Valentine’s Day. 1. Traditionally, spring begins on St Valentine’s Day, the day on which it is also believed that birds choose their mates. 2. The first man an unmarried woman saw on 14th February would be her future husband. 3. If the names of all a girl’s suitors were written on paper and wrapped in clay and the clay put into water, the piece that rose to the surface first would contain the name of her husband-to-be. 4. In Medieval times, girls ate unusual foods on St Valentine’s Day so that they would dream of their future husband. 5. In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. 6. In Wales, carved wooden love spoons were given as gifts. There were decorated with

People in Business

Peter Kirketerp

Owner of Mondo Vino, Partner of La Grappa and Le Bistro Peter came to Bangkok when he was 28 years old to work for a Danish construction company as an accountant and with an audit background from his native Denmark. He has been back for three years only since he came to Thailand first time in 1983. With retirement around the corner, he found an opportunity to move to Hua Hin permanently and to start a business here – Peter had visited Hua Hin on a regular weekend basis for many years since the early nineties, so to relocate here was like a dream coming true. Peter bought a house here fifteen years ago. At first sight, an Italian restaurant (La Grappa) and being an auditor, did not seem to be the ideal mix, but it worked and it worked well. Later a wine bar (Mondovino) and a French restaurant (Le Bistro) were added to the business portfolio. 1. Can you name a person who has been a mentor to you?

3. The “Communist manifesto pamphlet” was published by two young socialists, Karl marx and Friedrich Engels. It advocated the abolition of all private property and a system In which workers own all means of production, land, factories and machinery. (1948)

I don’t have a professional mentor, but I know many people who have, but I have been lucky to have had a number of good colleagues over the years. I will divide my life into 2 different styles - first was the professional side based on the particular professional background I have, which came to an end in 2008 and the second part, which is completely different side and with a life full of laughter and fun. When I was about 47 years old, I spent a lot of time walking on the beach here in Hua Hin partly to reflect and one Christmas time I was reading a book called “ A pirate looks at 50” by Jimmy Buffett. This guy, an American guy, had a rough start to his life, after school, I don’t think that he went to a university but he started to use dope etc. and went to Florida to chill out. Eventually, he started a band and over the years it became very successful band. He was writing about turning fifty and I myself was approaching 50. But there he was sitting on the beach in a Hawaii shirt whilst I was going to work every Monday morning in a suit, white shirt and with tie! Reading the book, I made a decision, that I would look for an investment in Hua Hin, which could bring fun and laughter, not necessarily profit, but something different from the socalled corporate life. And out of that came what today is La Grappa. It didn’t start as its is today, it started with an old friend who is a well known person in Hua Hin. Some five years ago at La Grappa, we were asked if we would be willing to represent a wine import company in Hua Hin and that is how Mondo Vino was born.

there is an issue, the customer is always the first person to be taken care of and the customer is always right (also when he / she is wrong). That is the only way to deal with customers. I saw the opportunity in Hua Hin with the wine business , because at that time, Hua Hin didn’t have a well serviced wine business. Service is the only parameter by which you can operate a wine business successfully anywhere in the world. We can offer a better service than the big Bangkok based importers can do here as their delivery time is pretty long compared to our delivery time being just up the road. This service concept has worked out quite well for us, but as usual, there is always much more that can be done to improve affairs. We decided then to focus more on a different kind of business development and we now go to meet with customers as part of our service, not with a book full of wines and proposals, but just to communicate with the customers and see how we can be help them better. We have got a good team and this is something you do not see too often in Hua Hin and we are pleased with that and as well with the teams at our other places, La Grappa and Le Bistro. Teamwork is very important to any business. To make a business successful the first thing that you have to do is to analyze the problems that you are meant to deal with. Is there a market for the products you intend to sell and is the market attractive? Are the products you have, of a the quality worth selling and can you sell them attractive prices? If the answers are all yes, then you have to look at your own organisation and build a team that is effective. If you have all these elements in place : an attractive product range and attractive prices at a competitive level, an attractive market, and you have an effective internal organization, then you have all the reasons to bring a business to success and it is just a matter of getting on with it. 3. What is the core of your business? The core of our business is commercial wholesale and larger scale retail business. Honestly, I don’t mind to say that the wine bar concept, which we operate, doesn’t work if you look at it from a business profit perspective. I think the wine bar works as a forum for promoting your business. Every Thursday we have a free flow and the Mondo Vino Shop is packed. From time to time we do arrange wine lunches and this is something we plan to develop with more interest in the New Year. I am happy to say, that we have a solid group of followers and this group is happy to come for lunch as the individuals know they will have a great time, a decent meal pared with some decent wines and that is a simple formula for making everybody happy – we refer to these events as civilized lunches. We are the first original free flow wine provider in town and these events started about 3 years back. The idea was great, but I believe that the concept of a wine bar in Hua Hin is to be seen more as a service than as a business. Because of our location and because of the facilities already being in place, it is nice to have the wine bar, but it does not make sense to keep it open until 10 PM when you consider staff’s time etc. against a limited number of customers. It is fine in the high season, but there is no reason to keep the bar open just for the sake of it and we are considering how to balance the wine bar demand with our services.

4. “Black History Month”, also known as African-American History Month in America, is an annual observance in the United States and Canada, for remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. It is celebrated annually in the United States and Canada in February. (1976)

4. In which direction is Hua Hin developing? 2. What core values and vision made your business successful? I do believe in Honesty, Integrity and Trustworthiness and these elements form part of our core values. Many people say the same, but they don’t act on these values, they just talk about it. We prefer not to talk about it, but just act as we believe. That means for example to take care of the customers, and if

HUA HIN TODAY, February 2014

I hope and I do believe actually, that Hua Hin is attracting more and more quality investments on the property side including large scale department store facilities and with these will obviously come better serviced infrastructure and demand for tourist orientated investments as well. This in turn will bring more people with spending power, which will have a knock on effect for the business in Hua Hin in general and with that will follow a steady flow of new smaller and quality orientated businesses. It also looks like Hua Hin is waking up to the need

for improving it’s infrastructure of the center of Hua Hin, which is great for all of us and fulfilling a need, the town has had for many years. It would be good to have the center of Hua Hin redeveloped providing decent good pedestrian walkways, shops, restaurants, boutique hotels etc. to the benefits for all locals and the many visitors. There is no doubt, that Hua Hin has to come to terms with the increase in traffic, which is not an easy thing to fix, but it has become very difficult to get around town during the weekends. I also believe, that Bangkok based issues of different character could result in more Thai people considering relocating to Hua Hin as an alternative place for retirement. The Bangkok regulars visiting Hua Hin are not likely to prefer Pattaya or the eastern side of Thailand as for them Hua Hin is the right choice and has been for many generations. For a project like the BluPort shopping mall to get a go ahead status by its initiators and investors, a the market analysis must have been made prior to the decision showing that the population here has sufficient disposable income and spending power to support it’s business model. However, as have been the case in other similar developments, the initial opening of such department stores may take a couple of years to settle down and to develop into successful operations, but I am certain, that is not alien to the investors plans. There is a very prominent property development coming up near The Black Lotus Resort & Spa, called Maha Samutr, offering houses from THB 35 million upwards. Of course the property developers behind this project will have done their research and are convinced, that the project will fly and I assume, that the prime target customer group for this project is Bangkok based residents of Thai nationality. The influx of these kind of investors will have a very positive effect on Hua Hin from a business point of view provided, that Hua Hin will be able to service the demand, which may follow from such a prominent project and the BluPort. 5. What is your favorite Restaurant in Hua Hin? What should I answer here ? We go to different restaurants for different reasons, we could not eat in any particular restaurant every day. We happily eat in both basic local and more international cuisine restaurants, without any particular favorite. It just depends on our mood at the time we decided to have a meal. 6. What is your personal favourite wine? I am bound to say “Villa Pillo Borgoforte 2011” because there is a lot of history for me with this wine, which comes Tuscany – the 2011 vintage has a score of 93 points by James Suckling (independent wine guru) and is reasonably priced. There is only a limited production of 12.500 cases and we managed to secure a reasonable quantity of this delicious wine at Mondo Vino.

Honey Wash: —1 tablespoon honey —Cover face with warm water and rub honey over your face. Let it sit for a moment and wash away with cold water. Honey-Oats Face Scrub: —1 tablespoon honey —2 tablespoons dry oatmeal

Honey-Oatmeal-Milk Mask: —1/4 cup of fine ground oatmeal —1/4 cup of milk —2 teaspoons of honey Add the 1/4 cup of oatmeal into a bowl. Slowly add 1/4 cup of milk. Do this until the mixture becomes gooey. Stir in the two teaspoons of honey and mix well. Apply the paste to your face and relax for 10-15 mins. Rinse with cool water. Did you know that the most aphrodisiac ingredient: “Chocolate” could be used as a facial mask? It is used to impart much needed moisture and hydration to dry and flaky skin in winter. Chocolate facial mask consists of cocoa solids that, along with milk, treat the dry skin condition, making it softer and smoother. Besides, chocolate also exfoliates dead cells from the epithelial layer of skin, removing stubborn black heads, white heads, etc. Choco Face Mask: —1 bar dark chocolate —1 cup milk —3 tbsp salt Mix salt and milk together in a bowl. Next, melt the chocolate in a double boiler. Put the bowl of chocolate in a pot containing water. Place this pot on the stove. The chocolate will begin to melt with the steam of the water. Continue to stir it until the chocolate gets melted and turns creamy.Remove the melted chocolate from the boiler and add it to the milk and salt combo. Stir it until all the ingredients are mixed thoroughly. Let the mix get cooled for some time and then, apply it all over your face. Allow it to sit for 1520 minutes. As it gets dry, rinse it with warm water and use a mild cleanser if you want. Hope you know now what to do, have a blissful love day and make the best of it. Cheers!

The first weekend of 2014, started under the sign of Glamour in Beautiful Hua Hin... With the wedding of Emmy and Antoine at Black Lotus Resort & Spa This was indeed a “Red Carpet Wedding”. Bright, vibrant and beautiful long gowns were very much the order of the day with gentlemen in neutral colour suits. Well after all, the bride and her girlfriends had to be the center of the attention. Despite most of them going for a Rainbow of colours, some opted for tones going from blush to peach tones for a Romantic look. Best dress choice for the night.

A gorgeous lace gown in a vibrant red colour, the corset details at the back were to die for!! The colour red is the colour of energy, passion and action. This colour is a warm and positive, associated with our most physical needs and our will

Fashion Police

to survive. It exudes a strong and powerful energy. Red is energizing, it excites the emotions and motivates us to take action. It is often used to express love, as in Valentine’s Day, however it relates more to sexuality and

lust, rather than love – love is expressed with pink. In Eastern cultures such as China red is the colour for good luck. Although times are changing and many Chinese brides now wear white, it is still the traditional the colour for

weddings. In Indian culture it symbolizes purity and is often used in their wedding gowns. So here we go! the mood of the year has given its firsts senses... It will be full of Energy, Harmony, Love, Parties, sharing with Friends and Family, and Colourful!!!!

The Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand (LTAT) under His Royal Majesty’s patronage and the Hua Hin Municipality have introduced beach tennis to Hua Hin, a new type of tennis well-known to players worldwide. The Chairman of LTAT Mr. Suwat Liptapanlop said that the Beach Tennis Championship was organised at Centennial Park Hua Hin to celebrate the new year of 2014. It included 32 pairs of foreign tennis players, 16 male and 16 female. The opening was officially hosted by world renowned tennis players Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenca. Beach tennis is played on a beach area, 6 metres in length, 8 metres in width with a 1.7 metre high tennis net. Beach tennis uses the same rules as lawn tennis. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) is certifying the sport for future championships and tournaments.

HUA HIN TODAY, February 2014

Russia, Spain, England and Italy were invited to compete with one another and show their own techniques of playing the sport to tennis lovers in Thailand. “I’d like Thai people to practice beach tennis in Hua Hin because the City has long stretches of beach where it can be played. This will help promote both tourism and sporting activities in Hua Hin. Once beach tennis is approved as an international sport for Thailand, it will be a way to make Thai sportspeople internationally famous because our people can play it as skillfully and professionally as foreigners,” said Mr. Suwat.

Mr. Suwat added that the Beach Tennis Championship in Hua Hin was a most important event and marked the emergence of this sport for the next generations.

The Advisor to the Mayor of Hua Hin, Mr. Suwit Rienrungreung also stated on behalf of Executive Members of the Hua Hin Municipality that he was proud to learn that Hua Hin was is first place in Thailand where the beach tennis has been introduced and wouldthat it would probably become internationalised. Once the sport is officially approved by sporting authorities an ideal place will be found on Hua Hin beaches where Thai people and foreigners can practice it together.

Not only does the sport boost good health among Thai people but it also promotes Thai beach tennis for international tennis championships in the future. Seventy players from many countries, including

Originating from Italy, beach tennis is a popular sport and has been played and adopted in many countries of Europe. It is the first time the sport has been ‘imported’ to Thailand by the LTAT’s Chairman.

KING’S CUP HUA HIN 2014 AT BLACK MOUNTAIN LOCAL PLAYERS STAR ON THE BIG STAGE

Local players Prayad Marksaeng and Prom Meesawat finished first and third (tied) to demonstrate the strength of the Thai and Hua Hin contingent at the January (16th – 19th) 2014 Royal Cup Golf Hua Hin.

This was an Asian Tour Event and for the first time ever broadcast live, over four rounds on the Asian Tour’s global television platform which reaches over 180 countries and 640 million homes, ensuring extensive exposure for Hua Hin as well as the sponsors and the Kingdom of Thailand itself. Plans are to move forward the Event in the future to increase the recognition of his Majesty, The King of Thailand’s birthday. One of the reasons for this extensive coverage was the credentials of the international and Thai professional golfers, a world class field with 22 countries represented. Prize Money totaled US$1,000,000 with a winner’s purse of US$180,000. As well as the strong Thai contenders consider international names names such as, Johan Edfords, Rikard Karlberg, Pelle Edberg and Fredrik Anderson Hed (Sweden), Scott Hend (Australia), Juvic Pagunsan and Juvic Pagunsan (Phillipines), Siddikur Rahman (Bangladesh), Anirban Lahiri (India), Lu wei-chih (Chinese Taipei) and Alex Cejka (Germany).

Thailand’s Prayad Marksaeng completed a Royal double when he posted a six-underpar 66 to win on Sunday. After adding the Queen’s Cup to his trophy cabinet in June, the popular winner claimed another deserving victory at the Asian Tour season-ending event with a winning total of 12-under-par 276.

Sweden’s Rikard Karlberg, who had taken a share of the lead for the first two rounds, had to settle for second place after signing off with a 67. Thailand’s Prom Meesawat will have to wait longer for his second Asian Tour win as a final round 71 saw him finish in equal third alongside compatriot Chapchai Nirat and India’s Anirban Lahiri. “I’m extremely happy to win the King’s Cup because it’s a great event and also staged in my home town here in Hua Hin. This win is especially special as it’s dedicated to all the Thai people,” said Prayad, who took home the winner’s prize purse of US$180,000 to surpass the US$3 million career earnings mark on the Asian Tour.

The Event was a great opportunity for local golfing enthusiasts to enjoy seeing professional golfers on the ‘golfing stage’. The ‘stage’ itself was golfing architecture (Course, buildings and facilities) at its best. It’s hard to imagine how Members of Black Mountain could ever be satisfied playing more pedestrian Golf Courses. There is no entry charge and once you are ‘on Course’, how you spend your time is your choice. Some probably never leave hospitality areas where you can wine and dine all day or others walk the Course all day following their favourite player. Golfers will all know how important it is to allow players to play their shots without distractions from unnecessary noise or movement. The first time you go to a professional event the thing that you notice is that when a stroke is being played its deadly quiet. Briefly; the golf. More pedestrian golfer would be in awe of the performances of these highly skilled sportsmen. I usually have no trouble seeing ‘average’ drives from the tee to the landing point. However when the drives on show were often well over 300 metres …………. where did it go? I could blame the mountainous backdrop, these guys literally hit the ball out of sight AND straight. However, take heart; we all know that we could have sunk that missed short putt anytime………………………

Prayad, who turned 48 at the end of the January, showed he is still a force to be reckoned with from the opening three birdies on the first four holes. After turning in 34, he birdied the par four 10th to move within two shots back of Karlberg at nine under. The roars from the galleries erupted when Prayad sank his eagle putt from 20 feet to dethrone Karlberg from the top after the Swede succumbed to his nerves by making consecutive bogeys on holes 13 and 14. Prayad’s eighth win on the region’s premier Tour was confirmed after another birdie on the 17th ensured his

unassailable lead and victory which he celebrated by jumping into the ninth hole greenside lake. If you are a golf fan who has only seen the best on TV, next time there is an opportunity to ‘get up close’ and see it live on Course, go for it. It will be an experience to remember and a source of conversation with your golfing friends for years to come. Sporting theatre at its best! Traffic Problems of Hua Hin Need Urgent Solutions

The Co-ordinating Committee for Work Monitoring and Follow-up (CCWMF) of Hua Hin Municipality has set up a sub-committee to tackle traffic problems around the City. The Chairman, Mr. Santat Suksri, described a meeting with an advisor to Hua Hin’s Mayor and members of Municipal Council to discuss major traffic problems.

LOOKING TOWARDS A SHARED TOURISM DEVELOPMENT MODEL

23

Dr Roongroch Seelungsawat is one of those community Members who really contributes in a personal way to the ongoing development of the Region as a sustainable tourism centre. He is the President of the Hua Hin/Cha-Am Tourism Association and a very well informed spokesperson on tourism planning issues for the Region.

However one of the big issues in tourism development, as Dr Roongroch points out, is that there really is no ‘Hua Hin & Cha-Am Region.’ There are two separate Provinces involved with even the ‘small matter’ of obtaining funding for any organisation or project that crosses these borders being problematic. His ‘big picture’ issue is the lack of a joint vision for how tourism that is cooperative, manageable and provides for the long term future for the communities concerned. As the growth between Hua Hin and Cha-Am continues the boundaries become even more blurred. Suggestions of a ‘Special Zone’ including both locations have been placed on the table, but this is yet to be realised. The enforcement of regulations and requirements on developers to provide for the infrastructure needs created by the number of large projects is also a subject t he feels very passionate about.

The Hua Hin/Cha-Am Tourist Association has been drawing together a range of service providers in the tourism industry as a group with a voice in the tourism future for some 16 years. They meet

monthly and on 7th/8th March will be hosting the annual Provincial Association Conference in Hua Hin. Once again ways of managing tourism and development growth is on the agenda.

The annual Hua Hin Jazz Festival will return in 2014 to Hua Hin with tentative dates set from 20 to 24th of June.

Lauded the most recognised and established jazz festival in Thailand’s jazz scene, next year’s edition will tentatively take place between June 20thto 22ndas dates have not been officially finalised.

JAZZ FESTIVAL RETURNS TO HUA HIN IN 2014

Construction sites are mushrooming in the City’s municipal area, some contractors leave construction materials such as stones, sand and bricks, on the road. This effects traffic and impedes those who walk on the footpath. Some pick-ups and big cars equipped with speakers and billboards used for advertising campaigns park on main roads, resulting in insufficient parking for other cars. Withiout poermission this violates traffic law.

The Festival is regarded as one of the most recognised and established jazz festivals in Thailand, attracting more than 15.000 viewers each year. What started originally as an attraction by the Hua Hin hoteliers to draw tourists in the low season, has grown into a major musical event that is performed on the beach of Hua Hin with no entrance fees for the visitors.

Additionally main roads and other streets are dominated by street vendors. Little has been done to solve these issues. “We’ve found that some pick-up trucks loaded with fish use areas in Hua Hin’s fresh market and night market as private parking spaces while some restaurants use public footpaths outside to do business. Some street vendors start their business earlier than officially agreed. This violates municipal regulations and I will monitor the problems myself. If necessary, legal persecution will be carried out,” said Mr. Santat.

The company plans to offer an even broader international and local jazz line-up this year, so reserve these dates on your calendar. This is the perfect opportunity to enjoy some fantastic jazz music with your friends on the beach of Hua Hin. Hua Hin Today will inform you closer to the time about the artists, the beach venues and timings.

Mr. Santat also added that people make these problems despite knowing that it is improper and upsets other people. He has repeatedly talked about those problems without improvements and commented that he would deal with them himself.

The Hua Hin Jazz Festival will be coming back to Hua Hin’s beaches this coming June, with opportunities to partner and resell Hua Hin Jazz Festival travel packages.

According to a press release by organisers B-Concept Media Entertainment Group, the festival will offer a “broader international and local jazz line-up”.

“Environmental issues will be addressed; international production standards will be implemented. Stronger partnerships will be developed that sustain the Hua Hin Jazz Festival for the future,” it said.

Special travel packages for consumers will soon be launched on the official festival website, while partners who are interested in publishing and reselling Hua Hin Jazz Festival packages can contact Ezy-go.com and become an affiliate. The Hua Hin Jazz Festival was first organised by local hotels, drawing more than 15,000 locals and travellers to the town.

HUA HIN TODAY, February 2014

27 The start

I took up golf very late at the age of 21 and turned professional when I was 23 without taking any lessons, learning a lot from caddying in the USA, watching others play and hitting thousands of golf balls. Of course playing a lot of tournaments as well. Then I went back to the UK where I worked at the Wentworth Golf Club, did the PGA course there for 2 years. Club repair was an important part of your job at that time. I started to realize that the club pro scene was not really for me, I was more interested in the competitive side of being a golf professional and decided to leave golf and turned to my other profession, construction.

My Return to Golf

12 years later I came back to golf and got my amateur status back. I played a round of 68 in my first tournament, which was quite good and I was really enjoying the game again. About 4 years ago, I went on holiday to Koh Samui and played at Santa Buri golf course with 2 rounds under par. The Manager was quite impressed and convinced me to come back out and give it another go, which was 4 years ago. I played and won two tournaments on the Island, the Presidents Cup and the Samui Open as an amateur.

The way back to Pro

After making a deal with the Santa Buri golf club, I went to the Australian PGA qualifying school, where I just missed the cut unfortunately. The same happened later in Hua Hin when qualifying for the Q-school

in Thailand at the Majestic Creek Golf Club, where my putting let me down, but I really enjoyed it. There is a good bunch of guys out there.

Hua Hin

After a short spell back in the UK. I returned to Hua Hin where caddying keeps me in touch the competitive side of golf. It makes you want to play yourself , you feel sometimes like “give me that club and let me hit that shot” ! I love the edge of competitive golf.

The Caddy

I am now 44 years old and caddy regularly for young upcoming professional golfers half my age. They hit longer, but they ask my advice on how to hit the unusual shots where my experience comes in handy. Also when it comes to the Rules of Golf, there are many ways that Rules can work well for you if you know them, as a caddy I help the players with this. You can actually take a drop to help you. These are young and very good players, but they are nervous, these tournaments are quite intimidating for them. Being a caddy entails many things, from basic things like keeping the clubs clean to club selection, working out the yardage (together with the player), working out the wind (which was very strong and swirling around this week at the King’s Cup at Black Mountain), working out where best to land the ball to keeping the nerves down. The day starts early (6.30 am) at the driving range for an hour prior to the round. You watch the distances for each club for the day and how the wind is effecting the shots on the range which helps you during the round, you also help the player build his confidence for the coming round.

The Shot Routine

Prior to the shot, we measure and discuss the distance, the kind of shot, where to land it on the green, what clubs to use (an easy 7 or a strong 8). Prior to the shot the player must have a clear mind which shot to hit so he can give it all without any doubts in his mind. It goes as precise as “the shot must hit 192 yards”, any 2-3 yards short of that and the ball will roll back off the green. The yardage book is instrumental for all caddies and professionals and shows all the distances from everywhere on the hole to the front of the green, much more detailed than the Strokesaver booklets we know.

The Mental Game

On average a round will take 4.5 – 5 hours, most players try to concentrate just before and during the shot and then relax while walking to the next shot, with some being more chatty than others. I also try to simplify things for the player, by just giving them clear targets and not mentioning the traps around there. Between player and caddy there must be a trust relationship, the player has to learn that what information you give is right. When it

Initially, there was no standard number of holes on a golf course. In the 18th Century, golf was played on common land, usually by the sea, so the available space varied. Leith Links had just 5 holes when, in 1744, they held the world’s first recorded golf competition and Blackheath, in London, originally also had 5 holes. The Old Course at St Andrews had 12 holes, which were laid out in a line and 10 holes were played twice - once ‘out’ and once back ‘in’ making a ‘round’ of 22 holes. In 1764 the first 4 holes were combined into 2, which made a round of 18 holes, but actually it was 10 holes, of which 8 were played twice. By 1857, St Andrews had put second holes in the 8 double greens of The Old Course, creating a proper round of 18 holes and The

comes to putting, some players are confident about the lines that they choose, others look for confirmation from their caddies. Whatever advice you give as a caddy to the player (good or bad), the player has the final say and responsibility, but as caddies we try to help and steer them towards the right decisions. Most players have such an commitment and passion for the game, that it is hard to pull them of the range “let me hit just a few more” and that is after a whole day of golf!

How to Recover from a Bad Hole

That is difficult and is different for each player, you try to tell them that they hit the right shot, but that something like the wind changed, you try to keep them focused and positive. It is important for them to know that they hit the right shot, but in golf there is also an element of luck.

Distance versus Precision

Most of the players driving distance is a carry of around 260 – 280 yards, and then depending on the slope and how hard the fairway is, the balls can run a lot further, like we saw last week in the Kings Cup at Black Mountain Golf Club. It is not all about distance, but a combination of both distance and precision.

All Trees are 90 % Air !

“We all know the phrase that a tree is 90 % air” and this was what my fellow player told me at the time, with a 6 foot wide Californian red wood tree right in front of me while playing golf in Tahoe (USA) so I replied “that maybe true at the top, but where I am at the bottom, it is 100% tree !”

What is in the Bag

Apart from clubs, we carry snacks, plenty water, energy drinks, umbrella’s, training aides, as many as 12 golf gloves, golf balls etc. in the bag. These bags can weigh as much 15 – 20 kg so you have to be fit as a caddy to carry this around for so many hours.

The Strategy

Most holes are seen as birdy chances, but some holes, also depending on the wind and pin position, are approached as “par” holes. I try to get the player to his comfort zone, all players have a specific distance that they like to approach the green from and we play like that. It is such a confidence game!

The Clubs

Apart from the swings, many players continually experiment with their clubs, the lofts, the lies, the shafts and grips to find something that works really well for them individually. There is nowadays so much more that can be done with the equipment.

The Caddy’s Story

Most Caddies are good golfers themselves, which helps them in giving the right advise to the players. Being a golfer yourself, you know what goes through the players mind, so you try to keep them calm and mentally distract them after a shot or hole did not work out well. We make sure that they drink and eat sufficient during the round. A caddies day will often start at 4.30 am, starting at the driving range, the playing a round, have some lunch, then back to the range and putting green for more practice and it can easily turn into a 14 hour working day!

Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews issued new rules for its Members. Rule 1 stated ‘one round of the links or 18 holes shall be a match unless otherwise stipulated.’ This R&A advice was adopted by other courses as the standard we know today. However there is another version of this story which may be more appealing to some, especially Scotsmen. Apparently it was discovered by some golfers who enjoyed the odd ‘tipple’ on the course that a standard bottle of Scotch Whiskey contained 18 standard ‘nips’. These ‘tipplers’ enjoyed a nip of Scotch on the completion of each hole. For convenience sake, a bottle per round worked for them. Perhaps it’s worth checking with an avid Scotch drinker to see if there is any truth in this story!

Centara Grand Beach Resort and Villas Hua Hin hosted and welcomed Katoy Noi on tour

Location, location, location - that certainly appears to have been top of the list for Hua Hin’s latest exciting attraction: The Lounge Bar, based here, slap bang in the centre of energetic Hua Hin. Walking distance from The Lounge Bar to Hua Hin’s white sandy beach takes less than 5 minutes. To the Hilton Hotel, Centara Hotel and a host of other top-flight hotels, bars, clubs and eateries also takes around 5 minutes or less. OK, so the location is unbeatable. But, what exactly is The Lounge Bar? What does it do; what does it offer and, more importantly, is it worth visiting? The Lounge Bar appears to have more than one focus. First impressions from outside give the suggestion of a selection of fine wines, beers and spirits. Hot and cold drinks and a fantastic selection of freshly cooked hot and cold food are also on offer. However, and on closer inspection, after ordering a glass of red wine accompanied by an incredible selection of freshly cooked tapas, and, while your ears are massaged by gorgeously relaxing music, while your eyes are clearly drawn towards beautiful images of Hua Hin and elegant images of romantic pool villas and sea view condominiums. Aside from the beautiful images on the walls, TV monitors are constantly screening a selection of all different kinds of property, from value-for-money budget property, to mid-range properties and all the way on up to luxury sea view condominiums and exclusive swimming pool villas. Private tabletop computer tablets avail themselves

to customers wishing to ‘probe’ a little deeper into what is on offer. But, in their own time, and at their own pace. Refreshingly, no one applies unwanted pressure here. For those customers wanting to know more about property; how it can be owned; how it can be bought etc., a dedicated staff member is stationed at the back of the bar and is available to answer any questions they may have. Knowing a little about property laws in Thailand, I decided to ‘test out’ the somewhat attractive looking assistant. It turned out that she was more than just attractive. She knew everything about leasehold, freehold, taxes, construction guarantees, rental potential and much more. Unusually though, and unlike many real estate agency staff members that seem to jump on you as you walk through their door, machinegunning you with a barrage of questions, The Lounge Bar, is exactly what it says, a lounge bar. The staff here does not approach you. You have to approach them! In conclusion, if you’re looking for somewhere really relaxing to kick back and relax while dining on the finest of fresh cuisine and delicious drinks, and, while watching the hustle and bustle of Hua Hin’s main Walking Street, then look no further. Whether you are interested in property or not, The Lounge Bar guarantees you a wonderful evening of people-watching, deliciously fresh food, a stunning selection of drinks, very relaxing music, all provided by a selection of really friendly staff.

‘Stamford will Keep Growing Fast in 2014’ : Executives

Executive Officers of Stamford International University’s Hua Hin Campus organised a press conference to inform media about the university’s progress in 2013 and the restructuring of educational management to facilitate the upcoming ASEAN Community in 2015.

The University’s President Dr. Boonmark Sirinaovakul, commented on using English in teaching and learning, With teaching staff from Thailand and foreign countries. The university is providing various courses for the bachelor degrees. These include the Bachelor of Business Administration in Airline Business Management, Finance and Banking Management, Logistics Management, General Management and Marketing, Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts, Advertising and English for Business Communication, Bachelor of Sciences in Information Technology and Bachelor of Public Administration. The

Bachelor

of

Public

Administration,

in particular, is one of the very important courses of the university. Managed by Pol. Col. Worasit Charoenphut, this course also provides a Master degree and is very popular among Thai public officers, business people and politicians. The university is also offering master degrees in business administration, hotel management, tourism management, banking and finance, marketing and foreign affairs. Dr. Boonmark added that during the 4 years of his management, Stamford has developed considerably. Amongst the private universities of Thailand, Stamford offers a similar standard of education. English is normally used for teaching and learning both in class and via e-teaching. Many graduates from the university obtain their dream job very quickly in leading hotels, financial institutes, aviation centres and media companies in Thailand. The fast development of the university can be indicated in terms of increasing number

of students as well, said Dr. Boonmark. Previously, there were less than 1,000 students enrolled here. Now, over 3,000 Thai and foreign students are studying at Stamford Hua Hin. In 2014, Stamford Hua Hin is expected to become an educational hub of Thailand together with the Bangkok’s campus. The university is ready to have more campuses throughout the country to welcome students of ASEAN countries, such as Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia and Myanmar who would like to study in Thailand after the opening of ASEAN Community next year. This is because the country boasts a high quality of education with tuition fees that are not as expensive as Europe or America.

HUA HIN TODAY, February 2014

In addition to teaching students, Stamford Hua Hin usually hosts academic seminars by famous Thai administrators and professors. It recently invited Dr. Likit Theerawekhin, a famous Thai academic in political sciences, and Dr. Somkiat Onwimol, a popular Thai academic in mass media, to give the students a lecture on the principles of self-sufficiency in the economy. In terms of the university’s involvement in the local community, Dr. Boonmark said that the university had a policy to encourage teachers and students to participate in social activities and experience traditional Thai culture. They can then apply knowledge gained outside the classroom for their in-class study. This policy also complies with the educational and national development plans of Thailand.
