Kite Festival 2014

A new Attraction in Hua Hin

It started with floating markets coming to Hua Hin, now no longer a trip to Bangkok is necessary to shop at the iconic Bangkok shopping destination “Chatuchak Market”. Our very own “Chatuchak Market” is now here to provide the same appeal and bargains as its “Big Brother” in Bangkok.

You may have driven past the site on Petchakasem Road just north of the Airport and wondered what is going on there. There has been little fanfare about this new and significant development but the construction pace has been frantic with permanent stall buildings rapidly replacing temporary structures. Completion of the site is now in its final stages, with plenty room for parking unlike the one in Bangkok. The 24 Rai site will contain about 700 stalls, but this market will be much more than a weekend market, being open every day from 9 am onwards. You can expect the same variety of items available and tourism attractions that are offered in Bangkok. This includes food, clothing, souvenirs, furniture and other goods new and second hand, there is even a used car yard!

HUA HIN DOG CARE CENTRE NEEDS IMPROVEMENT

The Bureau of the Royal Household has called for improvements to the Dog Care Centre at the Wat Iti Sukhato Buddhist Temple before His Majesty the King’s proposed visit in June 2014.

Singha Funds for Kaeng Krachan Protection

The Bureau of the Royal Household is an agency of the Monarchy of Thailand and King Bhumibol Adulyadej. In addition to a range of administrative and ceremonial responsibilities, the Bureau also serves as a direct conduit for the King’s philanthropy. The Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul, said that the Deputy Secretary-General of the Bureau, Mr. Dissathorn Watcharothai called for a meeting with concerned organisations and asked for urgent improvements to the Centre. The Hua Hin Municipality will undertake renovations to the Centre’s interior and exterior and repair the fencing inside the Centre and to the gardens. Army personnel will repair the perimeter fencing to prevent dogs from escaping, the Royal Irrigation Department will repair water systems and drainage and the Animal Hospital of Thailand will carry out medical check-ups, sterilisations and implant microchips for all the dogs. Funding will be the responsibility of each organisation. However there is also there is also a budget from the Khun Thong Daeng Central Fund if required. His Majesty the King recently donated more than 140,000 THB to this fund. The work is scheduled for completion by May 2014, prior to the Royal visit. The Centre will then serve as a model for other administration offices in Thailand for establishing care centres to systematically take care of stray dogs. Thong Daeng, a female copper-coloured dog, is one of the pets owned by King Bhumibol and was adopted in 1998 from the litter of a stray dog. Her name means “copper” in Thai. Mr. Nopporn said that the Dog Care Centre at Wat Iti Sukhato was opened in 2003 under a

HIGH SPEED TRAIN PROPOSAL PREPARED

The Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning has prepared four high speed train projects to be proposed to the next government. The office’s Director Chula Sukhamanop stated that the four projects include the construction of high speed train routes linking Bangkok to four prominent provinces in different regions which include Chiang Mai, Nong Khai, Hua Hin and Rayong. Mr. Chula said that the plan had been established since the inception of the government’s 2.2 Trillion baht loan bill, adding that, despite the mega projects being on hold at the moment, his office had decided to keep the prospect opened. Mr. Chula reported on the latest developments concerning the Bangkok-Chiang Mai high speed train route, saying that the route had been divided into two parts: Bangkok - Phitsanulok and Phitsanulok-Chiang Mai. He said that the office had completed public opinion polls and is orchestrating the Environmental Impact Assessment for the first stage. Mr. Chula said public feedback surveys are currently being conducted for the latter section. The pre-construction surveys and studies for the Phitsanulok-Chiang Mai route are expected to be completed this year. Director Chula said his office would gradually complete the necessary studies for the projects, adding that once a new Transport Minister is installed the project would be ready for proposal and implementation.

royal initiative of His Majesty the King to take care of stray dogs in Hua Hin. Despite an ongoing budget from the government and the Khun Thong Daeng Central Fund, there have been some problems with the management of the Centre. The Mayor of Hua Hin will now address these issues. There are about 1,800 dogs at the Centre under the care of 17 staffs. Sixteen sacks of dog biscuit worth around 9,000 Baht are consumed daily. During the 11 years since it was established, the Centre has suffered from a lack of maintenance and an increasing number of dogs being cared for. The Animal Hospital of Kasetsart University in Hua Hin is opening a special clinic in the afternoon on Monday and Wednesday. The clinic, offering water therapy to strengthen dogs’ joints and muscle and help sick dogs, will provide services as cheap as 100 Baht from qualified veterinarians.

Boon Rawd Brewery Co. Ltd. has launched a funding to protect Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi by donating 1.3 million Baht to the Director of the Park. The fund was officially launched on 17 January 2014 at Ban Rai Chaiyapruek in Kaeng Krachan. Mr. Amnart Parnkaew, representing the Executive Board Manager of Boon Rawd Brewery, Mr. Santi Bhirombhakdee handed over the money to the Director of Kaeng Krachan National Park Mr. Chaiwat Limlikitaksorn. The fund will be used for a variety projects at Kang Krachan National Park. Mr. Amnart said that the Company understands that funds were needed by the Park, so the Park’s Director was asked to set up the fund. Some of the donation will help vulunteers who work hard protecting forests in Phetchaburi and neighbouring areas. Without them, the forest would be endangered. Mr. Chaiwat added that in January, His Majesty the King paid a visit to Kaeng Krachan and asked him and all the staff to take care of the forest area. Grateful for His

Much of their work is about preventing deforestation, illegal logging, animal hunting and slash-and-burn farming. Even though some of the officials feel tired and discouraged with the amount of hard work, they keep working without any complaints because they realize the importance of forest protection. Mr. Chaiwat also said that, besides the current donation, Boon Rawd Brewery had previously given a satellite phone to Kang Krachan National Park so that the officials use it to communicate with their colleagues conveniently anywhere in the forest. Highly thankful with His Majesty’s concern and the support of Boon Rawd Brewery, Mr. Chaiwat said that he and all the staff of Kang Krachan National Park would work very hard and dedicate their life on forest protection at their best.

Fabulous Korean

‘walking-stick’ ice-cream lands in Bangkok

The craze for all things Korean has brought a new peculiar treat, the “walking stick ice-cream” for locals to taste and take selfies with. “Gi Pang Yi,” a Korean soft-served vanilla ice-cream brand has recently landed two carts in Bangkok, and has gained a fair amount of attention from locals who are curious and happy to whip out three 20-baht bills to try the weird-looking ice-cream. The gimmick of the Gi Pang Yi is the cornmeal cone shaped like a walking stick. Well that’s what they say, though it looks more like an ice cream snorkel. The cones are claimed by the owner to be thicker and tastier than normal cones.

It’s still early in 2014, but perhaps “Coco Easy” could already be declared product of the year? An invention designed to change your coconut-ing experience, Coco Easy is a soda can-like tab which plugs into the sturdy fruit and can easily be lifted to allow access to the delicious juice inside. No more cracking the shell by slamming it wildly with those giant, scary knives street merchants use. This coconuts game-changing product was developed by Banpod Klearpuangpit, who spent over five years designing a laserpowered method to cut through the shells of coconuts and preserve the taste as if they were freshly picked. So far the product has been sold in Thailand, Switzerland and Canada.

6 Cover story OUR SELECTION OF BOOKS for Kids

While the trends nowadays are to smartphones, computers and other tablets, let’s get old fashioned with our little ones and make them appreciate flipping the pages of a book.

From 7 years old and Up

Little ones: From 1 to 5 years

“My first words” - DK Great for learning new words, our 1-year old’s favourite book. A fantastic first words picture book as it has bright and colourful photos that are engaging for babies and toddlers. The pictures are so nice, and I think the way it is arranged (Around the House objects, At the Farm objects, etc) makes it easier for them to understand that those things usually are found together.

“My big (green/red/blue/pink) easy to colour book” - with stickers and handle easy to carry! Brilliant book, lasts for a long time! With over 90 pages of colouring and picture puzzles to complete, plus more than 100 stickers to have fun with! There is so much to do inside and the variety of puzzles and colouring is just brilliant.

“3-D explorer” - Safari animals - Dinosaure - Rain forest The best book for children and adults! This is not just a pop-up book, this is 3 dimensional. It is like a mini-exploration and a fantastic learning tool that is quite fun. The book has an innovative design and clever way of presenting the subject matter. It is both engaging and refreshening even to a grown-up adult like myself. I’ll surely recommend this book, young and old readers will be captivated by its compelling way of presenting facts related.

Taller ones: From 9 years and Up

“Usborne Illustrated

Stories Books” - Shakespeare - Dickens - Animals stories - Arabian nights - Stories for children - Fairy Tales - Classic for Girls / Children - Grimms fairy tales A great introduction to literature classics The book is also very wellconstructed, with a “plush” cover and nice paper stock and unusually attractive design. Usborne it knows for children’s books. The stories are no doubt the best for their illustrations and the retelling are also superb. Highly recommended.

Movies For Kids Coming Up “Mr. Peabody and Sherman” on the 06th of March in Theatre

Based on a 60’s short ‘Peabody’s Improbable History’, DreamWorks and director Rob Minkoff (‘The Lion King’) bring the original characters up- to-date in this wonderfully charming and colourful romp. The story tells of Mr. Peabody, a talking canine (voiced by Modern Family’s Ty Burrell), and his adopted “pet” son Sherman. An incident on Sherman’s first day of school leads to Peabody inviting Penny and her parents for dinner, hoping the kids will reconcile their differences and avoiding the potential loss of custody over Sherman. In an attempt to impress Penny, Sherman accidentally reveals the WABAC Peabody’s time travelling machine and ends up rewriting history that will have consequences in the future if not set right. The story is on the predictable side, but has a great message and will keep parents and older siblings entertained, while the zany energy and characters will keep the kids amused.

“The Lego Movie” on 13th of March in Theatre

The LEGO Movie is a 3D animated film which follows lead character, Emmet a completely ordinary LEGO mini-figure who is mistakenly identified as the most “extraordinary person” and the key to saving the Lego universe. Emmet and his friends go on an epic journey to stop the evil tyrant, Lord Business, who is bent on destroying their LEGO universe by gluing it all together. The Lego Movie is a winner on several levels. There is a good amount of clever gags and I was constantly bursting with laughter. Pop icons and film references are part of the cast, providing a strong nostalgia factor to older viewers like us. The animation looks absolutely stunning. The Lego Movie has plenty of heart too by the end of the journey and it’s going to be really tough for another animated film to surpass its inventiveness and charm.

“Rio 2” on 10 of April in Theatre. th

“Super heroes story book collection” - Marvel A great way to get your kid into comics! It’s a great introduction for him into all the different Marvel superhero characters. “Sound of wild 3-D scenes and soundtrack” - Ocean - Birds - Nighttime - Safari - Seashore It’s a Multisensory Experience and a super neat book for kids! The sounds are interesting and pretty realistic for this type of media. The pictures are amazing. If you open and close it slightly the animals move and the sounds keep playing. The whole experience is incredibly lifelike and multisensory. This is a wonderful break from “baby books” and will fascinate toddlers as well as older children. It can be discussed in a simple or complicated way and helps develop vocabulary in children at many different developmental levels. This book would be easily destroyed by a younger child left unsupervised, so keep it out of reach if you are not around.

After School Snack: Chocolate Banana Pops

Ingredients 1 large banana, ripe but firm 1/3 cup chocolate chips (dark, milk or white chocolate) 12 toothpicks

No recipe required. Just chop the bananas to the desired size, coat in melted chocolate and dip in the topping of choice. Of course my little guy would have nothing to do with sprinkles, he liked it best with the coconut. My choice was for the coconut and almonds combined. A few notes:

I recommend popping a mini marshmallow on before skewering the banana. The marshmallow helps to keep the banana in place when you’re holding the banana pop upright. Use ripe but firm bananas for best results. If you are making these beforehand for a party, to quick-set the chocolate place the finished banana pop in the refrigerator for 10 minutes. You can select other fruits to please everyone’s taste. For more Fun add so shredded coconut, sugar decorations... Rocky Road Crunch Bars

G Supermarket has expanded to 4 outlets, with the biggest and oldest branch, being G Hua Hin after the railway, another one in Bonkai (between soi 88 and 94), G Mart in soi 70 and the more recently, the latest branch of G Supermarket, here at G Hua Hin Resort & Mall. What core Values made your business successful? Each activity has its differences of course, but we still have the same core values for all of them and that is “Be honest to the customers”. For G supermarket, we set ourselves as a Local Discount Store, selling retail pieces at wholesale prices. That’s why we can survive now even with competition from Makro.

29th March : Coca Cola is invented by John Pemberton. It was sold as a patent medicine for five cents a glass and it supposed to cured morphine addiction, dyspepsia, headache and impotence (1886)

HUA HIN TODAY, March 2014

I joined the supermarket around 3 years ago and then we started the G House. Originally it was meant to be a Serviced Apartment. My father in law already had an idea in his head, he had thought about this business before we did. He wanted us to take care the G House and so we did. The first thing my husband and I realized was that G house is too good to be only a Serviced Apartment. So we started making some changes but not too far from the original idea. We still wanted to keep it as a budget hotel and then it came the idea of being a hotel for golfers too. It all started with some guests who confirmed golf bookings. The golfers don’t need swimming pools, they don’t need anything else but good accommodation. G House is 5 years now and it is doing very well with the online marketing and bookings.

3 years after starting G House, the idea of G Hua Hin Resort & Spa was created. For me G house was like a hotel school, which gave me good experiences, how to run a hotel. The big hotel of course is something different but the basis for me is the same. The product is different but the way of doing business is still the same. Because it is a big

hotel, we of course don’t do all the work ourselves, we have a management team who help. I have to say that we are lucky to have experienced people in our team. In my opinion, it is good to have hotel experience as an owner and that we got from operating G house, Budget and Golf Hotel. My husband is very good in online marketing, when we started building that hotel we had already the first bookings online. With G House, it took us a long time to make people trust us online and that’s why we started creating our new website well before the hotel was ready. Building a hotel is a big project that needs a lot of preparation and attention. We opened November 2012, the hotel has been operating 1 year and 2 months now. My brother, as an architect, help us designed the building and what you can see here is what we’ve tried our best to suit our theme of “City Resort” with a minimalist style. Can you name a person who has been a mentor to you? My mentor is my father in law. He does not have a university degree, but he could see the challenges in life and ways to overcome them, so I just had to follow him. What cores and vision make your business successful? 1st Honesty. My father in law taught us that we have to be honest to our guests. We follow this guideline in our businesses and life. Be honest with your guests, tell them the truth about what they get and they will come again. 2nd Cheap price and Good product. You will have the product like anyone else but if you give it in a better price the guest will come again, creating repeated customers.

and much more. The only thing we have to be careful is with the infrastructure. Hua Hin need to change this, we have already now problems with the traffic every weekend imagine when all these developing start operating. They should think about this also. How this developing will influence your business? In the tourist business I have to focus on how to improve my work. When there are more customers there are more offers also. Of course it is more challenging for us now, but now we have to grab the chance to maximise our business.

What is important in your life? “Learn every day”. The thing that we have to do is to try everything. It is nothing to be scared of, just try and learn every day. When you try and you use your experience, you will succeed. In which direction Hua Hin developing? I think the tourist industry in Hua Hin has grown a lot. From when we started G Hua Hin, we already have many more competitors than before. If you look at Agoda, you can see how many more hotels are added every year. From 65 when I started, there are over 200 hotels now. But Hua Hin is developing not only in the number of the hotels but also in entertainment, relaxation and shopping. So many new things are happening, new Shopping malls, Water Parks, Condominiums etc. All the big developers are here in Hua Hin. Don’t forget that in Hua Hin there are many powerful people that own the businesses and want their investments to be successful and they would not have made these if the future did not look positive. There are some policies to boost up the tourist industry and many new things happening in Hua Hin such us high speed train and big events like world cup tennis

As a mother how you combine work and family? I have three children 11, 8 and 7. Usually I work with my husbandso we take turns. Now when one works, the other one is taking care the kids. But before when we there was a lot of work, because Chinese Thai people work around the clock, I was lucky to have my mother in law to help me. While I was working in the supermarket business, I had only 5-6 hours to relax. Now that my children have grown up we need to spend more time with them. Where do you usually go with your kids? I prefer to take my kids to natural environments. I like the Mangrove National Park in Pranburi. You can take the boat on the river, it is very beautiful and fun for everyone. Nowadays the kids are play a lot with computers, which is why I prefer to take them out to be in nature. What are you doing in your free time? I don’t have free time, but right now the little free time that I have I spend to make plans for my holidays. What is your favorite Restaurant in town? It must be sea food restaurant. One of my favorite is So Par restaurant in Khao Takiab. It started from a small restaurant and now is doing really well. I start seeing more and more people there every time.

THE ASIAN TOUR QUALIFYING SCHOOL FINAL STAGE HIGH FLYING TANI GRADUATES IN STYLE

tarting from 12thFebruary, a total of 238 players teed up in the Final Stage played at the Imperial Lakeview Golf Club and Springfield Royal Country Club in the first two rounds of the Asian Tour Qualifying School while Springfield Royal hosted the final two days. Japan’s Akinori Tani won the Asian Tour Qualifying School Final Stage after Lam Chih Bing of Singapore surrendered in the play-off on Saturday.

Tani, a two-time winner in Japan, shot a oneunder-par 70 but the story of the day belonged to Lam, who returned with the day’s lowest score of 64 at the Springfield Royal Country Club. Knowing that he had done enough to earn a Tour card, Lam decided to forfeit the playoff without hitting a single shot as he rushed home to celebrate the birthday of his daughter, who turns two on Sunday.

“The goal was to finish inside the top-40 and once I knew that I made it, I had to rush to catch my flight so I can spend time with my family, especially my daughter whose birthday is on Sunday. It really means a lot to me that I have earned a Tour card again,” said Lam, who is the Chairman of the Asian Tour Tournament Players Committee. Thailand’s wonder-boy Poom Saksansin was a qualifier with a final round of 73 and a total 279.

“I’m so happy I earned my Asian Tour card because this is a big Tour and I want to be a part of it. I hope I can get more experience here and become a good golfer. Qualifying School is very difficult and you must be very focussed and serious. You really need to plan your shots well and do not make too many mistakes. It was quite stressful this week but I’m happy I made it. I turned professional this year and the reason why I did it is because I want to earn money by myself and not always ask from my father or mother! I don’t have too many goals this year but the main goal is to keep my card. To be honest, I do not want to return to Qualifying School and go through this again!” All Qualifying School entrants were eligible to compete on the burgeoning Asian Development Tour (ADT), which has become a career pathway for professionals to hone their skills and gain experience before entering into the premier Asian Tour.

Banyan Golf Course Celebrates 5th Anniversary

In just five years Banyan Golf Club in Hua Hin Thailand has won both international awards and many friends to become one of the top courses in Asia. The list of VIP’s who took part in the club’s 5th Anniversary tournament in February showed the club’s ability to attract golfers, celebrities and politicians to this popular Hua Hin club.

The governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Thawatchai Arunyik, spoke to the 200 guests after playing in the 5th anniversary tournament, and praised the management for creating a superb golfing experience, which he said was a credit to Thailand’s golfing experience.

Golf course architect Pirapon Namatra and Smith Obayawat, Principal Clubhouse architect (OBA) have achieved the perfect blend of a challenging 18 holes across some beautiful countryside. Pirapon Namatra and his company Golf East have built and renovated over thirty courses, including the Banyan, Singha Park and the Santiburi courses plus renovations including Blue Canyon and Alpine.

Namatra said ‘I am currently building the new Waterside golf course at Siam Country Club in Pattaya, however I have many fond memories of creating Banyan which we actually complete in just 18 months. It’s a beautiful piece of land, and I think the final product is proof of that.’ Namatra added, ‘The owner didn’t want us to touch any of the trees so we left them alone too. All but one, the big Banyan tree that was in the middle of the 10th fairway which we moved about 50m to the left. Perhaps one of the highlights is driving along to the course and seeing the magnificent club house overlooking the front nine holes. Designed

by famed architect Smith Obayawat, Principal Clubhouse architect (OBA) who has also created several iconic projects including the So Sofitel and K Village in Bangkok and the Thai Consulate in Guangzhou. ‘Our Thai style clubhouse has been awarded several international awards, including winning Best Clubhouse in Asia Pacific for two consecutive years, which were very gratifying. The location is beautiful and the weather is always nice in Hua Hin, and thanks to the owners they allowed me to exercise my imagination, ‘said Obayawat. The Dutch based owners are continually looking at ways to improve the golf club and their 75 villa Banyan Resort. But perhaps

the biggest success has been the dedicated behind the scenes work headed by General Manager Stacey Walton and Stuart Daly Director of Operations. After just 12 months of opening the club was recognized as the “Best New Course in Asia Pacific” in 2010 by Asian Golf Monthly, and has continued to collect a number of awards annually. General Manager Walton said, ‘The demand for golf in Hua Hin is still growing and our long term plan, using land we own adjacent to the current course, would be to eventually create a sister course with the same natural feel of the Banyan, but a bit different in character.’ Source: Banyan Golf Club For more information visit www.banyanthailand.com

Some Bad Practices To Be Avoided On The Golf Course

There are many ways golfers can upset other players or create uncertainty by not following correct etiquette on the Course. These may not be ‘illegal’ or lead to a penalty, but are still incorrect. Here a few examples of what not to do!

green, it does not incur a penalty. Rule 16-1(ii) specifically permits this action, providing the player does not press anything down. If they do press their club down on the ground as they address their ball they incur a penalty under Rule 13-2.

is when one player marks all the cards for the group, including his own scores. Perhaps surprisingly, this does not breach any Rule of Golf. Committees may introduce their own club regulation to prohibit this lazy and potentially inaccurate practice.

Cleaning a ball by rubbing it on the putting green. This is permitted (Decision 16-1d/5), providing the act is not for the purpose of testing the surface of the putting green. However, it is recommended that a ball be cleaned in other ways to eliminate any question as to the player’s intentions.

Standing behind a fellow competitor while he makes his stroke. Again this action does not breach any Rule, but it is extremely poor etiquette. Players should never stand close to or directly behind the line of play, or directly behind the hole, when a fellow competitor or opponent is about to play.

Not marking the nearest point of relief or club-lengths when taking relief. The Rules do not require that these limits are marked, but it is best to do so to ensure that it is obvious that the drop is made within the permitted limits.

Using a putter head, a tee or a loose impediment to mark a ball on the putting green (Decision 20-1/16). Players should always use a coin, ball-marker or other similar object for this purpose.

Not entering the player’s score on the score card after each hole when acting as their marker. Some markers only update the card every 3rd/4th hole, or even wait until the end of a round. There is no penalty for this, but the Rules say that the marker should check the score with the competitor and record it at the end of each hole (Rule 6-6a).

Placing a club, usually a putter, in front of a ball when addressing it. Even though this unusual pre-shot routine means that the player is touching their line of putt on the putting

An even worse practice than the one above

Not marking your ball when lifting it to take relief. Rule 20-1 means that players only need to mark a ball before lifting it if they are going to have to replace it at the same spot (unless a Local Rule does require marking before lifting, e.g. ‘Preferred Lies’). However, always marking your ball before lifting it under the Rules is a good habit that could avoid an unnecessary penalty. Not putting recognisable identification marks on each ball played. Time and again

players find that they are not able to positively identify their ball in play. Rule 12-2 states that each player should put an identification mark on his ball.

Playing out a hole in a Stableford competition when no points can be scored. Although Rule 7-2 confirms that strokes made in continuing the play of a hole, the result of which has been decided, are not practice strokes, players should avoid doing so, especially if it could delay the play of others in any way (Rule 6-7). The same Rule 6-7 could be applied to players who spend time in retrieving abandoned balls from water hazards. This can be frustrating to fellow golfers and should be avoided during competitive rounds. The above bad practices on the golf course may annoy and frustrate fellow competitors or opponents and can sometimes lead to penalty situations. Try to avoid them so that you, and those that you play your rounds with, can all enjoy your games.

PREFERRED LIES - WHAT’S FAIR?

The Rules of Golf rest on the fundamental principle of ‘playing the ball where it lies’. Some golfers now feel they have an entitlement to a perfect lie. But it’s a fundamental principle that golfers have to accept good and bad lies as part of the game. Prolonged wet conditions and a general lack of growth during some seasons can render a course less than satisfactory. To help promote fair play and protect the course, a committee can introduce Local Rules to counter these conditions.

Decision 33-8/34 of the Rules of Golf removed the authority for a committee to make a local rule “providing relief without penalty from a divot hole or a repaired divot hole (i.e. filled with sand or seed mix)”. Divot holes are not abnormal to a golf course and are considered part of the game.

The marker of the player should be consulted before any relief is taken. Carrying out this consultation with virtually every stroke becomes impractical and time consuming. On Thailand golf courses it is not unusual for there to be areas of the course, including on fairways where there is mud, particularly after heavy rainfall or even extensive hand watering.

Only when a committee has introduced a Local Rule for preferred lies, or winter rules, is a player entitled to prefer the lie of their ball.

There are other issues related to the ‘preferred lies’ strategy. Lower scores and consequently handicaps result. The tenptation is to “ Tee Up” the ball for every shot. Golfers being are disadvantaged and less competitive when playing when they cannot improve the lie of the ball.

HUA HIN TODAY, March 2014

Players may not understand the need to mark the ball before lifting or become confused about the allowable distance within which they must drop the ball.

When a ball has landed in, or rolled through, a muddy patch, mud may adhere to the ball and the next strokes affected. A Local Rule for cleaning the ball can then be useful. If there is such a Local Rule, the player is permitted to lift the ball, clean it and replace it on the exact spot where it originally lay. The recommended wording for the Local Rule for preferred lies and/or cleaning the ball is contained in Appendix 1, Part B of the Rules of Golf. FOOTNOTE: Prior to completion a draft of this article was forwarded to SHONA McRAE, Assistant

Director – Rules, the R&A, St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. She added this comment: “the key is to only introduce these Local Rules when the conditions merit it and not on a full-time basis.”

GOLFING – ‘ON TOUR”

If you are thinking about a golf trip away with your group or society, there are some ways the trip can be made more enjoyable AND organised. We joined the Cha-AM Golf Club for their ‘On Tour’ annual Event to look at how it can be done.

Booking the Golf Course Clearly the most important part of organising an away golf trip is booking the golf course. This may not be simple particularly if there are communication issues and many courses are heavily booked in the high season. Expect email communications to be problematic. The message is don’t leave the booking until the last minute and consider making a ‘recognisance’ trip to finalise arrangements and to checkout the accommodation. Oncourse accommodation is the preferred strategy to avoid confusion about transport to and from the course and to keep the group together.

Who’s Coming? The earlier the booking, the more difficult it may be to get the player commitment you need. Our suggestion is not to rely on verbal ‘bookings’ but insist on either email correspondence or a signature on a ‘sign up’ sheet. As you may be expected to pay for ‘no shows’ a deposit or even full advanced payments is not unreasonable.

A very clear and complete schedule, including costs is a MUST so that everyone knows what to expect. Perhaps include a website link to the golf course, their pictures will tell a thousand words. Transport Reliable, safe and insured transport is a necessity. Perhaps one bus tailored for the number of players rather than multiple smaller vehicles. This means everyone arrives at the same time and adds to the camaraderie and social side of the trip. Don’t underestimate travel time, including stopping en route and time to settle in before the first round. More planning The less uncertainty players have the better. Plan to have an information sheet both emailed and available to hand out on the bus, including flight lists and tee times. Even the most basic information should be included, such as meal arrangements and any planned presentations. Avoid any uncertainty about the format for the golf and even the most minor details such as

any Local Rules you may want to implement such as preferred lies. Being accused of changing the rules after play commences just creates controversy and disharmony. On the Day For a large group a small ‘advance party’ may be a good idea so that when the main group arrives everything is ready and no one is wandering around and confused. On the first day a ‘starter’ on the first tee is a final opportunity to make sure everyone on the same wavelength. On Tour with The Cha-Am Golf Club The Cha-Am Golf Club ‘On Tour’ Event was an overnight trip with two days of golf at the Mida Golf Course on the outskirts of Kanchanaburi. Over 50 players took a bus, leaving from the Municipal offices in town (overnight parking no problem) at 6.00 AM. All players were emailed an information sheet, including the flight list some days before. This provided all the details, including meals, prize presentation arrangements and time for the

return journey. The first flight on day 1 was at 12 noon so with a two hour plus trip there was plenty of time to settle in. Accommodation was at the course although players could not check into the rooms until after the first round (11 AM check in). An advance party of three Committee Members arrived early to ensure that all was in place and welcomed the arriving golfers. Mida golf course management was very user friendly and eager to make sure that all the players were comfortable. Two days of golf followed with a combined stableford format on a course that was a great test of golf and in excellent condition. Probably the only change we would recommend to the planning was to describe the countback system in advance as this differs from country to country and should be understood before play commenced – next time! The winners – our congratulations to Rogeir Heimstad and Wenche Utheim as the main ‘On Tour’ winners!

CHA – AM International Kite Festival 2014 The Cha-Am International Kite Festival is an annual event which may be rated as the most colourful happening of the year. This year the Festival will be held on 8th & 9th March 2014.

With each year the Festival attracts an evergrowing number of devoted kite fans, participants and spectators from all over Thailand as well as from many other countries. It presents a golden opportunity for visitors to savour the international flavour of kite culture. As well as kite events there will also be a parachute show, a radio controlled airplane show and other competitions. As with any Thai festival there will be plenty of food and handicraft booths everywhere to keep you fully occupied. This annual event is really one not to be missed. Where: North Cha-AM Beach.

Singha-Cha Am BIKINI Beach Run 2014

Runners and marathoners rejoice! The Singha 5 Bikini Beach Run will take place again this year on 17 March 2014.

Following the great success of last year, the event, hosted by the Tourism Business Association of Phetchaburi, Cha-Am Municipality and Singha Corporation, aims to promote tourism in this beachfront City, encourage people to exercise and to create a unique marathon Event. This will never be found elsewhere as all runners will wear only a bikini throughout the competition. The main reason why this event takes place in Cha-Am is because it is one of the most popular holiday getaways in Thailand. Its location is ideal and the City has many accommodation options. The Singha 5th Bikini Beach Run is a sporting event that will upgrade the quality of running in the country. Attendants enjoy

The competition in previous years saw a lot of Thai and foreign participants, especially those from Kenya, Japan, Australia and Scandinavian countries. They like winning awards as much as traveling. This year, the competition is divided into two categories: 4 and 10 kilometre runs. Starting at 6 a.m. in front of Soi Long Beach Cha-Am, the competition includes running on the beach and on the road along the beach. Cha-Am has a new venue for live music. It’s near the beach (but without neighbours to upset), it can accommodate big performances (but also great for quieter, individual performers) and allows for both open air and under-cover events.

‘Come On @ Cha-Am’ is just a great place to enjoy live music!

Although there has been a live band playing on the smaller stage for some time, on Sunday 23rd February, Hin Lek Fai ( English: Stone, Metal, Fire), performed on the big stage to give a crowd of passionate fans some memorable moments of high energy Thai Rock ‘N’ Roll. Pathompong Sombatpiboon (AKA Pong Hin Lek Fai) has long been one of the faces of Thai heavy metal as the leader of the legendary 90’s rock band Hin Lek Fai. He is now in his 50’s and has been entertaining Thai rock fans for more than 30 years. From a conservative Thai family, Khun Pong commented that “my parents objected to me being a musician but that didn’t bother me”.

party’. This was good-time music, including an invitation for dancers to join him on stage for the final song or two. There are more concerts coming soon. Perhaps next time rock ‘n’ roll fans of foreign extraction will also join the party. I was the only non-Thai to hear Hin Lek Fai in action at this concert. I often think that there is a certain ‘snobbish’ attitude by foreigners to Thai Rock. When the performances are of this standard, you don’t have to recognise the songs or understand the lyrics to really enjoy the music. Where: At the very southern end of Chao Lai Road. By day it just looks like just another small bar/restaurant, but by night it rocks! Check out the next concert date on posters at the venue.

His influences are described as Deep Purple, Queen and Black Sabbath although when I spoke to him after the concert, he also mentioned The Rolling Stones amongst his early favourites. His songs reminded me of a time when a heavy beat, a wailing lead guitar and long hair were in fashion. In the words of one song, the band was there to ‘welcome everyone to the

Phase One: In the December 2013 edition of Hua Hin & Cha-Am Today we reported on the Cha-Am Highway Police Rescue. At the time a priority identified by the coordinator of the Cha-Am Region, Mr Somyot or Khun Gie, was for the acquisition of the ‘Jaws of Life’. These are specialised hydraulic rescue tools primarily used to assist extricate crash victims trapped in motor vehicles, as well as other rescues from small spaces. The tools include cutters, spreaders, door busters and rams. Phase Two: In the January Edition we reported the good news that a complete set of these tools was then in the hands of the Cha-Am Police Rescue. Funding for this purchase was obtained from three individual sponsors. One of the sponsors was a ChaAm building company which wished to remain anonymous, one was a personal donation from Khun Prai (the Petchaburi Provincial Administrative Officer) and the third generous sponsor was Khun Gie himself. Although the ‘jaws of life’ where then in working order, Khun Gie was eager to replace the hydraulic hoses which were at the end of their working life. Phase Three: In this edition of Cha-Am & Hua Hin Today we can report on the final phase of this project. A ‘just in time’ sponsor has provided the necessary funding for the repairs necessary

HUA HIN TODAY, March 2014

to make the equipment reliable and fully functional. By ‘just in time’, we mean that replacement of the hoses for the equipment had become a matter of urgency as equipment failure, which could have had dire consequences in a rescue operation, had already occurred.

The project includes the Pattaya-Hua Hin East-West ferry, the high-speed train from Bangkok to Hua Hin, the development of the Singkhon checkpoint and strategic plans to protect coastal erosion.

THE CAMEL REPUBLIC It’s Underway

On 13th February, Members of the Management Committee of the Cha-Am Golf Club travelled with Rescue staff to a Tha Yang workshop to watch as the equipment was restored to ‘good as new’. The Club had agreed to provide sponsorship from its Charity Fund and handed over a payment of 19,000 THB to the repair shop for the work and materials. Club President, Paul Graff, said that the sponsorship had been agreed to by Club Members at the January Annual General Meeting. He believes that this sponsorship is a real example of the community working together to provide a very practical asset to benefit and even save the lives of anyone in an emergency situation. Who knows; perhaps one day a Club Member or another golfer may be involved in a vehicle crash travelling to or from a golf course and be thankful for the services that the Highway Rescue Police volunteers provide? Our thanks to Members of the Cha-Am Golf Club for this generous donation!

As we previously reported the Camel Republic, a new entertainment venue just North of Cha-Am will be open for business before too long. This will feature camels and other exotic forms of entertainment not usually available in Thailand. Here is an early picture as the buildings take shape. The Moroccan style architecture is clearly visible and a sign of things to come!

22 MOTORING

THE NISSAN MARCH Commuting Without Compromise

For those of you who are long term stayers in Thailand, the need for independent transport around town is a probability. If you don’t feel comfortable as a motorbike rider, you may be considering a compact vehicle that is safe, economical, easy to drive and safe.

If this is you, then the all new Nissan March is for people who love simplicity, designed as a reliable, stylish and accessible compact car, the Nissan March is engineered for great handling and an agile performance, We had the opportunity to take a test car from Nissan Cha-Am on a drive both around town and into the Tha Yang hinterland. Here’s what we found. First Impressions First of all it’s cute, or as my Thai companion exclaimed – ‘Na Lak’. “Its face had to look stylish and have an air of sophistication to it” comments Mr. Makoto Yamane, Associate Product Chief Designer. The vehicle is pint-sized (3.8 metres x 1.7 metres), but has four doors and easily able to accommodate four adult occupants with ease. The alternative is to fold down the rear seats so that golf clubs or other items can be transported. Taking the driver’s seat I immediately felt ‘at ease’ with easily adjustable seating, operating controls and clear open vision. Retaining its compact dimensions, the new car is slightly longer and marginally lower, while its longer wheelbase enables a ‘wheels-at-each-corner’ stance, the main reason behind the March’s roomier interior.

All-new 1.2-litre Engine and XTRONIC CVT The all new Nissan March is powered by an all-new HR12DE 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine, inheriting its DNA from the HR16 4-cylinder engine powering the Tiida. The new engine employs continuously valvetiming control (CVTC). Power is rated at 59kW (79ps, while torque output is 108Nm. At only 120g/km, CO2 emissions for this version are world-class. The Nissan March comes with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or Nissan’s allnew XTRONIC Continuously Variable Transmission (XTRONIC CVT). The wide gear coverage enables the 1.2-litre engine to achieve economy and brisk acceleration. My first word for the driving experience was ‘nippy’, it gets up and goes. You won’t be left behind when the traffic lights turn green.

Nissan engineers developed ride and handling characteristics which combine agility, refinement and poise. Mounted onto Nissan’s new signature V-platform, the suspension has been designed to be both compact, minimizing intrusion at the rear for maximum bump not at the expense of the car’s on-road dynamics. Particular attention has been paid bump absorption, meaning that the March will ride serenely over challenging road surfaces, not suffer from wallow or float, and cruise effortlessly at highway speeds. Comfort, Function and Equipment The car has superb visibility and a classtopping turning radius of 4.5m and several new technologies that assist with minimizing C02 emissions and mileage while at the same time making parking easier.

The new March is available with some key technological innovations which are designed to simplify day-to-day life for its owners. It also offers special option of Intelligent Key + Immobilizer, a push button start-stop system, automatic foldable mirror, and reverse sensor (4 points) in addition to an intelligent multi-display which supplies drivers with real time fuel economy information, cruising range and outside temperature. Safety The incorporation of the V-platform is one major factor contributing to the car’s

improved impact safety. The car is designed to absorb the forces of a frontal impact, thanks to the sophisticated crumple zones, while maintaining cabin integrity due to its highly reinforced body shell. We achieved European standard of safety under UNECE 94 and 95 (front and lateral impact). In Thailand, the March is fitted with standard safety equipment such as SRS airbags, ABS, EBD, and BA In Summary March has consistently won praise and success in Europe, Japan and other global markets gaining a reputation as a reliable, stylish, affordable compact car enjoyed by a wide cross-section of customers. Its newly developed 1.2L 3-cylinder HR12DE engine mated with an automatic transmission achieves class-leading fuel economy. This means local drivers will be well satisfied with finding the benchmark for compact cars to drive around town. Nissan Cha-Am boasts very good levels of English language communications; sometimes an issue in visiting new car showrooms. Ask for Sam, the local Manager and you will be more than please with what he has to offer.

Single Seater $600 Volkswagen Car doing 109 km per liter!

Here’s a one seater car that will get you back around on the cheap. This $600 Volkswagen’s car gets 258 mpg, 109.687 km/l or 0.9 litre per 100 km!!!

Its spartan interior does not sacrifice safety; the impact and roll-over protection is comparable to a GT racing car. The aero design proved essential to getting the desired result.

The body is 3.47 metres long and just 1.25 metres wide, and a little over a metre high. The prototype was made completely of carbon fibre and is not painted to save weight.

The power plant is a one cylinder diesel, positioned ahead of the rear axle and combined with an automatic shift controlled by a knob in the interior. The Most Economic Car in the World will be on sale next year. Better than Electric Car – 258 miles/ gallon. A single-seat car. lt be selling for 4000 Yuan, equivalent to US $600. A variety of issues were discussed including the dangers and risks to both Thai and foreign people in town and the serious injuries and need for medical treatment directly attributable to the issue. Concern about the welfare of injured or diseased dogs was expressed. The impact on tourism, particularly the loss of return visitors, was also highlighted. It was acknowledged that Resorts and Hotels

have also approached the municipality concerned about the impact of stray dogs on the businesses, however without offering funding. Tourism budgets have also not included funding for this issue. The municipality acknowledged the seriousness of the problem and agreed that ‘something must be done’. The Cha-Am Municipality representatives agreed to meet further with several of those attending. The aim and commitment given by the municipality was to arrange a forum in about a month’s time when a strategy and plans to address the problem can be offered. In addition an immediate approach will be made to the Department of Livestock to remove about 100 of the most aggressive dogs. Following the success of last year’s inaugural round at Sri Racha, Chonburi, the highflying, hardcore FIM Motocross World Championship (MXGP) circus will return to thrill tens of thousands of local spectators as well as a massive global TV audience. It will also be throwing a very bright spotlight on Thailand’s ability to organise and host major international events, blending in its unique cultural charm and sense of fun. The location of the track needs to be within a two-hour transfer time of an international airport and the local infrastructure needs to boast good roads and plenty of international-quality hotel accommodation. Thailand, has comfortably met infrastructure requirements. With Chonburi, home to Thailand’s fastest-growing commercial and tourist centres, locating the track less than 100 kilometres from Suvarnabhumi Airport, convenience, comfort and good times await international visitors. The Federation of Motorsport Club of Thailand (FMSCT) has more than three decades of experience in motocross, during which time it has developed a thriving national championship and many courses all over the Kingdom. THE ROYAL PROJECTS FOUNDATION ‘THAILAND MODELS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT’ If you stay in Thailand long enough, you will hear about the King’s or Royal Projects. You may just see a sign along the road and wonder about these Projects scattered throughout Thailand.

Fundamentally, the Royal Project Foundation (formally the Royal Project) is about the future welfare of Thai people. Conceived by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej Maharaja in 1969, Royal Projects were first launched as an alternative to the cultivation of illegal opium and poppy seeds in the North of Thailand. In addition, wide spread slash-and-burn practices in the highlands had endangered the viability of croplands. The King envisioned a future when sustainable farming practices and legal cash crops would meet the needs of his people and thus the Royal Project was established. The impetus always comes from the local people, who must agree with the proposal and cooperate to see to its success. With a three part mission of research, development and marketing; the Royal Project Foundation is now considered one of the most successful domestic agricultural projects in South East Asia.

‘CHANG HUA MUN’ Thailand Farming At It’s Best

Throughout his reign, His Majesty the King has initiated more than 3,000 Royal Projects, aimed at raising the standards of rural life and helping farmers to be self-reliant. The projects are classified into categories, such as agriculture, water resources, the environment, occupational promotion, public health, public welfare and communications. To achieve its aim, each of them is based on five major principles suggested by His Majesty. To ease immediate problems Carried out step by step in accordance with necessity and cost-effectiveness Self-reliance to tackle poverty among the people Promote the use of knowledge and appropriate technology Focus on natural resource development and conservation

Next time you come across one of those signs, take the time to call in and take a look. You are likely to be very surprised at what you will find and experience Thailand as you may never have done before. On this page we describe two Royal Projects operating in our Region; ‘Golden Place’ and ‘Chang Hua Mun’.

‘GOLDEN PLACE’ Gourmet Thai Products Available in Hua Hin

As you travel into the Hua Hin City area from the North, just past the Royal Palace on the ocean side, you will see a building with a billboard featuring a large picture of his Majesty the King of Thailand, the Royal Insignia and the name ‘GOLDEN PLACE’. Golden Place Hua Hin is a City-based Royal Project offering an extensive range of products screened for quality, environmental friendliness and chemically free. If you are looking for the best of what Thailand can offer, this is ‘The Place’!

Our motor vehicle review featured in this edition of Hua Hin Today is about a Nissan March. We used this opportunity to take a drive to the Royal Project and demonstration farm at Chang Hua Mun. This was a pleasant trip of about 60 kilometres from Cha-Am through farmland in the Tha Yang District in Petchaburi Province on good roads and a recommended ‘Sunday drive’ to experience the Petchaburi farming countryside.

What’s In A Name? Chang Hua Mun literally translates as “weighing a potato”, but it’s spoken as a pun for “let it be that way” or “who cares”. It is one of those Thai emotional expressions when there is a feeling of - “Okay, I’ll face it whatever it will be”, or “forget about it”. It is also meant as an appreciation, an expression of regret, or even to say never mind. It is spoken more intimately than ‘Mai Pen Rai’, and used within a family context or between friends. Chang Hua Mun is also the name of a very successful Royal Project. A story is told about the King receiving gifts of vegetables and leaving some potatoes on small scales in his office. He next saw them when they were budding (still on the scales) so he brought them to Petchaburi and gave them to farmers to use as breeding stock. This project started in 2008, when King Bhumibol purchased in two plots of land near the Nong Seua Reservoir. The land was initially 120 Rai (47.5 acre) then a further 130 Rai (51.3 acres) totaling 250 Rai (98.8 acres). The land had been degraded and was unwanted with significant soil damage from chemical contamination. It has now been restored and developed into an agricultural and livestock showcase and a model of sustainable farming practices.

HUA HIN TODAY, March 2014

What Will You Find?

Wind Turbines and Solar Panels for power generation Organic fertiliser production Bio diesel production Fruit growing crops including many kinds of bananas, dragon fruit, papaya, lemons, pumpkin, sugarcane &, coconuts. Vegetable crops such as asparagus, sweet basil, cherry tomatoes, peppers, watercress okra & bitter gourd. Post harvesting with cleaning, trimming, grading and packing for distribution. A Dairy Farm with a free range herd of Holstein Friesians, milk production and processing. It is much more than ‘agro-tourism’ but visited by students, scholars and farmers. The aim is to provide anyone who is interested in understanding sustainable agriculture best practice and seeing it in operation. People living in the area also benefit from employment, better communication, electricity and water resources. Since the establishment of the Project in 2010, His Majesty has visited the project constantly to monitor its progress and last attended in December 2013. Our host at Chang Hua Mun was Ms Saiturn Hintong or Khun Joy as she is better known. Her role is about public relations and she proudly wears the Royal Insignia on her uniform. She is one of about 80-90 workers at the Project. She told us that there are around 26,000 visitors each month with about 10% being foreign residents or visitors. Of course Members of the Royal Family are the most eagerly anticipated visitors and every Wednesday fresh produce is taken to the Royal Palace. It’s fair to say that attracting Thai people has priority with only a minimal amount of English language information on hand. However, perhaps with a Thai friend along for the ride, it is a user friendly destination for all visitors. There are both bicycles and open motorised transport for farm tours available and a Thai restaurant to satisfy any hunger urges. Chang Hua Mun is a highly recommended destination to experience a different ‘taste of Thailand’.

The reason the King features so prominently on this building is that Golden Place is a Royal Project initiated by the King some 13 years ago. The purpose of this Project is to showcase Thai products in a retail outlet resembling a modern supermarket. Apart from in Bangkok, Hua Hin Golden Place is the only such outlet in Thailand. As with all Royal Projects, the initiation and establishment of the enterprise comes directly from the Royal family. Golden Place Hua Hin displays an amazing range of produce. Produce of the edible variety, both fresh and packaged, but also many personal care items are available. The focus of the produce is quality; tested to be chemical free and assessed for being produced in an environmentally and sustainable manner. Many items are unusual to the Western eye and are typically sourced from rural Royal Projects (including produce from Chang Hua Mun) where the production of ‘boutique’ items has been developed. One example is the humble rice crop. However here you will find something like 50 varieties on offer, some vacuum packed with names such as Red Jasmine Germinated Brown Rice, Brown Hom Male Rice, 4 Grain Germinated Brown Rice and many others with only Thai script names. One section proudly displayed ‘Luem Phua Rice’. Translated this name means ‘Forget Your Husband Rice’. Noone could explain the origin or intention of this name and we couldn’t find another version called ‘Forget Your Wife’! Mushrooms were another example of the produce available; from the very small and delicate types through to more common shapes and sizes. Fresh produce includes items not usually associated with ‘grown in Thailand’ such as apples, melons and various green leafy vegetables. You will also find some intriguing

and, to the Western eyes, strange offerings. What about packaged ‘Roasted Fish’ (“healthy, with high calcium”), Chicken Pepper Puff, Dried Lady Finger Banana or Homemade Fish Puff? There is also a huge range of tea and other drinking options. Drinks infused with saffron, jasmine, pandan or senna as well as many more mysterious herbal offerings. Many of the items are packaged in way inviting purchase as a small and unusual gift. When you are stumped for a gift with a twist for the next birthday party for someone with a gourmet taste, this could be the answer! During our visit to Golden Place, it was apparent that the patronage is largely well informed Thai people with only a smattering of other nationalities. There is no advertising or ways of accidentally discovering this gourmet’s paradise. Many ex-pats have been driving by for years without knowing what lies beyond the façade of the building. If your knowledge of Thai language script is absent, there will be some items which will test your imagination. However knowing that you will not be exposed to health risks which may be an issue at less quality controlled or regulated street markets should give your confidence a boost. Our host Khun Mingkhvan Seedat, has been the Manager of Golden Place since the beginning. He is obviously passionate about this Project and takes a personal interest in what is on offer. We hope his wife isn’t too interested in ‘Forget Your Husband Rice’! If you are interested in discovering new flavours just want to be reassured about the issues of health, food safety or want to see more of what produce Thailand can provide, this is the place! You’ll also be supporting small producers and Thai sustainable industry.

Self-Sufficienct Economic Principles Seminar at Stamford International University Hua Hin/Cha-Am Col. Dr. Worasit Charoenphut.

Stamford International University Hua Hin/ Cha-Am invited a Royal Academy Member Dr. Likit Theerawethin and an independent academic Dr. Somkiat Onwimol to conduct a seminar on the philosophy of self-sufficiency economic principles. The event was open for students, public officers and general audience. This seminar was attended by 500 students and public officers including the Director of Public Administration Course at Stamford

According to the invited academics, ASEAN will present challenges for the Member countries as each country its own unique identity and history. Nevertheless, they share together a local tradition and culture. Thailand has to adjust by learning and understanding the identity of all country members as much as possible. A self-sufficient economy is considered necessary for national development in Thailand, especially during any economic crisis. Besides inviting academics to give special lectures to students, Stamford International University encourages its lecturers to meet local administrators and conduct seminars on politics, business management and public administration. This will help serve the needs of local people and business entrepreneurs concluded Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bunmak.

OUTBREAK : 16,000 THAIS Have the ‘Pink Eye’

Raise your head and look around. See those red, watery eyes with crusted lids? Too late, you’ve probably got pink eye already. So far this year, an outbreak of conjunctivitis has struck 15,964 people, according to the last count said Dr. Sopon Mekthon of the Department of Disease Control.

Usually associated with children, the disease’s hardest hit group has been adults 35 to 44 years old, he said. The disease seems to resurface and spread widely every two to three years, he added. Pink eye is rarely life-threatening, especially if people mind their hygiene.

Yamsaard Hua Hin President Ms. Duangchai Trakulchang is very impressed with the benefits for both her pupils and her accountant with the installation of the ‘Economix’ with ‘Coolnomix’ airconditioning system. In fact she is eager to see the system introduced at the school’s other branches in Bangkok at Lad Prao and Rangsit. Ms. Trakulchang commented that her students have appreciated a more consistent temperature in the classrooms. Since the system was introduced some 3 months ago the school’s power bill has been reduced by around 30%. She is confident that within a very short period of time the system will have paid for itself and then with the money saved the school can provide even more facilities for the benefit of the students. Wasting money on power bills is something we are very eager to avoid, she says. ‘Coolnomix’ is an advanced energy control system for commercial and domestic air conditioning systems.

HUA HIN TODAY, March 2014

To avoid it, officials suggest frequently washing hands, not sharing makeup or towels with others and making sure pools are clean and chlorinated.

Thai Post to launch delivery service in some 7-Elevens

Starting today, Thai Post has launched a pilot program at several dozen 7-Eleven stores in Bangkok allowing customers to send packages at the ubiquitous convenience store. The “Easy Pak” service will allow customers to ship packages just as they would at the post office, but at more locations and around the clock. Available at THB109, THB139 and THB199, three types of packages are available for flat-rate shipping, meaning they won’t need to be weighed.

The service will be expanded to more 7-Eleven locations in coming months.

HYPOLIPIDAEMIC AGENTS & RHABDOMYOLSIS Please note that the information contained in this article belongs to ‘Doctor Sant Chaiyodsilp’s blog which I have been following and studying for a long time.

There is one article which he wrote as a response to a patient who is having problems with the symptoms of Rhabdomyolysis from taking Hypolipidemic agents. For anyone taking Hypolipidemic agents, I would like to give you some suggestions about how to avoid kidney problems as a symptom of Rhabdomyolysis: 1. Do not take the medicine without a prescription. There is only four groups of people who may need Hypolipidemic agents. 1) people who have the symptoms of cardiovascular disease such as paralysis, paresis, or chest pain; 2) people who suffer from type 2 diabetes; 3) people who have low levels of Lipoprotein (LDL) and 4) people a high

HUA HIN TODAY, March 2014

risk score for cardiovascular disease. Such risk is calculated by using a new measure called ‘Pooled Cohort Equations’. 2. Do not increase the recommended dose for Hypolipidemic agents. The incidence of Rhabdomyolysis has a direct relationship to the dosage, any increase in the dosage must be prescribed by doctors with extreme care. 3. Patient must frequently drink water. One of the major concerns is myositis or rhabdomyolysis when kidney failure occurs before other symptoms appear. The only way to address this problem is to frequently drink a lot of water. You should drink water for almost every hour that you stay awake. 4. When you are taking the Hypolipidemic agents you have to monitor muscles ache symptoms and inform the doctor immediately if such symptoms occur, don’t wait until next doctor’s appointment.

5. When the doctor performs venepuncture ask him about the enzyme level of your muscles. If this is not performed, in a private hospital you can request for it at least 3 times per month. If it is a government hospital you might need request this from the doctor. You may need to mention muscle aches and ask about rhabdomyolysis. This suggestion is for you to track the enzyme of your liver and muscle every 3 months. It is a good safety measure and can do you no harm; actually it is very good for you. The above content is copied from a part of ‘Doctor Sant Chaiyodsilp’s blog. I’m confident that this would be useful for every reader that takes Hypolipidemic agents. Should you have any query, please contact us at “Healthlab Medical Laboratory”.
