Ms. Wasana Srikanjana, president of Hua Hin-Cha-am Tourism Business Association (TBA) announced that the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Prachuab Khiri Khan and Hua Hin Municipality had recently organized the project “Khao Tao Street Arts”. It is aimed to boost local tourism as well as passing down the history of Khao Tao to the young children of ​​Khao Tao Village and Khao the Tao Reservoir area.

In commemorating the royal kindness of HM King Maha Bhumibol Adulyadej and the 60th year anniversary of TAT, this project was also created to attract visitors and further generate revenues of the small communities in B aan Khao Tao. The community itself boasts of its beautiful nature sceneries, mountainous forests and stunning beaches.

The allocated budget for the “Khao Tao Street Arts” was set at 90,000 Baht and has designated 8 spots to display the 8 different

paintings and artworks. The paintings were drawn by 5 artists including an apprentice of Professor Thawan Duchanee who was a wellknown national artist.

Thawan was a contemporary painter, architect and sculptor with an international reputation. He was once recognized as the National Thai Artist in Fine Arts and Visual Arts by the National Culture Commission of Thailand in 2001.

Nararat Thawinanan (Thawan’s apprentice), nicknamed Abi, and the other artists painted the 8 artworks on the walls surrounding the Khao Tao village. His artwork features important assets of the community such as the old fishing village, sea creatures, floral gardens, etc.

One of the historical incidents painted on a wall is an image of the royal jeep of King Rama 9, which the King himself drove to visit the village in Khao Tao in 1958 where his jeep got stuck in

a mud hole somewhere in the Thung Takat area.

Phanom Chorjan, a 4th year primary school boy at the time,saw the jeep couldn’t move so he ran out to find more people to help push the jeep out of the mud hole. Back then Phanom had no idea that the driver of the jeep was King Bhumibol Adulyadej himself.

HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej and HRH Queen Sirikit returned to Klai Kangwon Palace after their royal wedding. During their stay, the King had set up numerous projects in and around Baan Khao Tao. Most of the King’s projects were seen painted on the front walls of coffee shops around the village.

The paintings of the “Khao Tao Street Arts” took the artists 4 days to complete from January 8th to the 11th. The official opening ceremony was inaugurated on January 12.

In this issue, I would like to point out two important matters that took place or is about to take place in and around Hua Hin. Firstly, it’s the temporary road closure in the Bon Kai intersection (Soi 88). In about a week or two, construction of the double railway tracks will resume at the intersection and the accessible 4 lanes will be closed temporarily (approx. 2 – 3 months). Traffic will only be allowed 1 to 2 lanes at a time. So expect that congestions will heighten especially during the rush hours.

Fortunately, it will be school holidays by then.

I advise motorists passing through that area to be extra careful, observant and patient.

Nevertheless, alternative routes will be directed during the peaking hours. Or you could simply leave your house earlier than usual in order to get to your destination on time.

Secondly, it’s about the ‘Hua Hin Street Arts’ (so called the ‘local graffiti’) that is now becoming popular in our town. The recently opened Street Arts at Samor Riang Village (near Soi 57 area) boasts the artworks of local artists painted on vacant walls. The painting features the different lifestyles of the fishing village and historical landmarks of Hua Hin. But the highlight of it all is the newly inaugurated ‘Khao Tao Street Arts’ in the Baan Khao Tao Village which is very near to the reservoir.

There, the natural surroundings are impeccable. The paintings on the walls were also done by local artists.

One of the historical incidents was the painting of the royal jeep drove by King Rama 9 that got stuck in a mud hole during his visit to Khao Tao Village circa 1958.

I would like to invite Hua Hin residents to visit this magnificent landmark whilst enjoying the beauty of its nature.

How Do You Get Around Cha-Am? A regular songthaew route seems to be an ideal solution for the public transport issue in Cha-Am.

Restricted local public transport around Cha-Am is a hot topic. Visitors question how can groups; including families, commute from one end of the beach to the other, get to the main market or Wednesday Night Market and travel to and from main bus routes on Petchakasem Road or the Railway Station.

One suggestion is a route commencing at the railway station, diverting to the main market area and then resuming down Narathip Road to the beach. Then travelling to both ends of the beach road before returning to Narathip Road and retracing the trip back to the Railway Station.

Motorbike taxis, private and unmarked private ‘taxis’ and mini-vans are available. However not a tuk tuk, songthaew or any form of regular public transport is in sight. Motorbike taxis have their own waiting areas, but make some nervous and are impractical for many; especially Mum, Dad and the kids.

This situation is a real disincentive for tourists considering a return visit.

Songthaew are shared taxis plying a designated route.

They feature in almost every tourist-oriented location in Thailand and are also used by school children, but not Cha— Am! There are three main routes in Hua Hin; songthaews are an inexpensive and convenient way to get around that town.

Songthaews are a great way of meeting the local people and getting free advice. Prices are fixed and vary from 10-20 Baht, depending on the route and time of day.

To flag down one of these distinctively marked vehicles, you just wave your hand when you see one approaching.

Climb in the rear and take a seat. When you approach your destination, ring the buzzer or tap on the window of the cab so that the driver hears you. When he stops, disembark and go to the driver’s door to pay.

So what’s the problem?

This proposal is not good news for motorbike taxi operators. There would be real issues for their livelihood; they like things the way they are. However the alternative tuk-tuk or other light multi-passenger vehicles are also off the radar unless you are a resort or hotel guest.

Mum, Dad and the kids and even couples are missing out. And what about luggages, helmets for passengers, those on a budget or if it’s raining?

Perhaps this is an issue that the local municipality could tackle head-on. The ongoing debate amongst visitors carries little weight without those in authority recognising this is an important issue.

4 Burning Rubbish in the Open; It’s Illegal and Causing Pollution

Burning in an open area has long been illegal and you may be fined and imprisoned Burning grass, garbage or any unwanted things in the open air is known to be one of the causes of PM 2.5 dust, which today is an increasing problem seen in Hua Hin using this fuel because it is quick and cost-effective.

Waste incineration is one of the main causes of small dust particles and also causing a nuisance to others in the area because of smoke and dust from the ash.

The Hua Hin Municipality is now very strict with burning waste and grass in the open which is illegal with a penalty according to the level of the seriousness of such actions as follows: Burning grass or garbage or anything on a person’s own land that does not cause direct injury but may be harmful to a person or another property because of odour, light, sound, radiation, heat, poisonous substances and soot, ash which are harmful to the health of others in the vicinity. Local authority can send a warning letter to the landowner to stop and can also specify methods to prevent nuisances that may occur in the future.

Ignoring a warning is a crime with penalties of imprisonment not exceeding 1 month or a fine not exceeding 2,000 baht or both available.

But if the burning is causes injury to other persons or is likely to be dangerous to the person or property may be guilty under Section 220 of the Penal Code. This offence is punishable by imprisonment not exceeding 7 years and a fine not more than fourteen thousand baht.

If the fire has actually caused danger to other property or person, the offender will be punished with a heavier punishment under Section 218 or Section 224, as the case

may be, with the maximum penalty of death available. If the burning on your own property but the results in a fire on another person’s property and conditions of strong wind made the conditions dangerous, the offender would be guilty a more serious offence and penalty.

The Hua Hin Municipality is requesting cooperation from the public to refrain from burning outside and to be aware of the pollution impacts.

Air pollution is becoming a hot issue for locals who have noticed a recent deterioration in air quality. Our readers have made some comments and are hoping that these circumstances are only temporary.

“Something is wrong in Hua Hin; I don’t remember seeing this in previous years. You can’t tell me this is just from burning a few fields? When I was up at immigration the other day I literally was choking from smoke but that seemed to definitely be from a fire

as there was ash flying about too. Might be time to try and see if there are any Thai environmentalists working in Hua Hin. I am suffering tremendously, previously air quality was just unhealthy for sensitive groups, but now it’s making me really sick.”

Wild Elephants Problems Again at the Pala-U Forrest Maj. Gen. Thakat Lordsiri, military commander of Surasi along with military units and committee discussed the problems of raging wild elephants in the Pa-la-u Forest, Huay Sat Yai, Hua Hin District at the Wildlife Conservation Society Thailand Centre (WCS Thailand).

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant had instructed the Hua Hin Elephant Correction Commission to relocate

the wild elephants that were destroying properties and agricultural crops for more than 3 months now but no action has been taken yet so far.

The committee representing the forest animals in Hua Hin said that the wild elephants in Huay Sat Yai area have been continuously damaging the properties and agricultural crops of the villagers in the past.

One of the notorious wild elephants was named “Plai Boonchuay” by the villagers.

The committee had advised the Kaeng Krachan National Park to relocate the aggressive elephant to Huay Kom Krit but the park was still unable to do so.

Wild elephants were the main concern of the villagers and it has been affecting their livelihood ever since.

The committee agreed to resolve the problem by planning to construct a semipermanent fence by planting tamarind trees, digging canals along the borders of the forest in order to prevent elephants from crossing into the villager’s properties and creating food and water sources inside the forest for the elephants to feed rather than the agricultural crops.

Maj. Gen. Thakat and the WCS Thailand visited the affected areas caused by wild elephants and inspected how much work had already been done. “In the past, HUA HIN TODAY, 16 - 31 January 2020

many agencies, including government, administrative groups, conservation groups and local government organisations including the border patrol police have continuously integrated in solving various problem related to wild elephants. Other remedies to the problem must be processed with proper planning and will have to wait for the allocated budget from the government,” Thakat said.

Later in the day, Thakat and other officials visit the Huai Sat Yai Yai OTOP Center and distributed 40 blankets to the elderly, children, and less fortunate families in order to relieve the cold that occurred along the border. The people were thankful to the major general and the military.

Thakat also visited a number of public service points in Huay Sat Yai and distributed souvenirs as a New Year’s gift to various agencies in the area.

6 The Cha-Am Wednesday Night Market; Complete With Husband Minding Centre!

If you go to the Cha-Am Wednesday Night Market you may choose to enter on the left where a lane takes you past a variety of food stalls. About 100 metres on the left side and you will come across one of the features of the Market. This is an innovative ‘extra’ to the usual market scene, the ‘Falang Husband Minding Centre’.

This free service provides for the care, protection and safety of many falang husbands who are not ‘browsers’ while their wives go about their shopping without concerns. Husbands will then be out from under your feet, not complaining (“when are we going home”) and wives shopping can proceed undisturbed! All the wives need to do is pay for drinks (usually beer!) then collect them and take them home.

The Wednesday Night Market is a Cha-Am institution and a must visit see for every visitor. As soon as the sun goes down a usually quiet part of town comes alive with a huge range of stalls with vendors offering everything imaginable.

For Kids: From stuffed animals to train rides and from bouncy castles to balloons. Kids just wonder around with wide eyes unable to decide on which special treat to take home.

For Adults: From electronics to cosmetics, from tools to trophies, from shoes to shoulder bags and as many varieties of t-shirts as could ever be imagined. Clothing of all sorts some new, some second hand, some original and some may have ‘fallen of the back of a truck’. Videos, CDs and all the machines to play them.

Animals: Puppies, kittens, fish, rabbits and birds. Even some ‘look alikes’ that you eventually realise are really battery powered.

When Is It Open?

Every Wednesday from sunset (about 5.30pm) until about 10.00pm. Early means better choices as some stall holders may sell out and choose to go home early.

Our Tips?

Parking may be difficult for vehicles with more than two wheels, better to leave your car either at home or outside the area and take a motor bike taxi.

Transport away from the Market is limited to motor bike taxis, so other arrangements may need to be made if you have a family group.

Don’t eat before you visit or plan to eat later. There is plenty of choice (with drinks) and you can find seating for a very casual (no flash restaurants), entertaining (watch the passing parade) and delicious (try cooked grasshoppers?)

Thai style dining experience.

Come prepared with suitable footwear. If there is rain about it may be muddy underfoot so no high heels!

Take your time. No need to rush around, just enjoy mingling with the locals.

Where is it?

The Market entrance is on Narathip Road starting at the roundabout about 500 metres before the Cha-Am Railway Station. From the intersection of Narathip and Phetchakasem Road (traffic lights) if you are coming from Hua Hin turn left, go straight on and you can’t miss it. The Market sprawls through a network of lanes alongside the Railway Lines, the Government offices and permanent shops.

The Market is not really set up as a tourist attraction and the vast majority of the shoppers are local Thai people, many of whom are there every week. However it’s a great Thai experience for travellers and you can see many of the local produce and products in one venue.

The Market is HUGE! It would probably take you an hour just to walk down each ‘shopping lane’ even without actually stopping to buy.

What Will You Find?

Food: from donuts to dumplings, from bugs to biscuits, from chicken to chilies, from cockles to cakes, from seafood to sausages and from pasta to popcorn. And of course Thai delicacies too many to mention.

7 Hua Hin Makes Merit on New Year’s Day

Locals and tourists joined together to make merit and offering alms to ninety nine monks on New Year’s Day at Dechanuchit Road, in the town center. Mr. Thanon Pornpipas, Hua Hin sheriff along with Mr. Nopporn Wuttikul, Hua Hin mayor and the head of government departments also attended the event and offered alms to the monks from various temples in the Hua Hin Municipality area.

During the speech, Hua Hin sheriff and the mayor wishes luck, good health and Godspeed to everyone who attended the event. The monks poured holy water to those who were present at the ceremony whilst the people brought in food, water and offerings to the monks.

Hua Hin Municipality organizes this yearly activity for the public in welcoming the New Year on every 1st of January whilst most of the Thais joined in together to pray in temples on the eve of December 31.

Offering alms to the monks is considered as one of the most significant aspect in the Buddhist tradition. Monks hold alms-bowls to place food or other alms from the people doing offering in the morning of a Buddha day. Alms and food offered to the monks consists mainly rice, fruits, dried food and sometimes flowers believing that the merit will bring them good fortune and prosperity to their family in return.

Hua Hin Encouraged to Join “Everyday Say No to Plastic Bags” 43 retailers and convenience stores in Hua Hin have pledged to refrain from using plastic bags under the campaign “Everyday Say No to Plastic Bags” from Jan, 1 2020.

On 24th December, Mr. Jeerawat Prammanee, permanent secretary of Hua Hin municipality, together with Ms. Jirat Pranprasit, Provincial Natural Resources and Environment Director discussed on announcing the campaign to significantly reduce plastic bag usage in the city and how to motivate the residents to join such campaign.

By so, the city will post the information about the campaign--stop handing out single-use plastic bags on social network services such as Facebook, Line, and Instagram with the hashtag “Everyday Say No to Plastic Bags.”

Thus far, more than 43 retailers and stores have agreed to stop distributing plastic bags and encourage their customers to say no to plastic bags and bring their own bags.

The campaign will run from 1 January 2020 onwards, with an aim to ban single-use plastic bags throughout Thailand within 2021.

8 “Smart Kids” Activity Will be

Hua Hin mayor Mr. Nopporn Wuttikul has presided over the Opening Ceremony of “Smart Kids” activity at Tesaban Hua Hin School Open House 2019. School director Boontawee Boonhai, teachers, students, and parents attended the activity.

One of the important elements in the development of Thailand 4.0 Platform is the educational system. Tesaban Hua Hin School has taught their elementary students how to become part of the ‘Children 4.0’ generation

through the teaching strategy ‘project approach’ which helps students to develop their ideas, creativity, critical thinking, and responsibility through hands-on experience.

This approach encourages students to do their research in things that interests them by integrating different subjects such as mathematics, science, and languages; therefore, students can help each other, share what they have learned with others, and meet their learning needs.

Hua Hin Mayor and Officials Follow-Up on Road Construction

Mr. Nopporn Wuttikul, Hua Hin mayor, along with Mr. Boontian Chansuk, head of division of public work and officials did a follow-up on the reinforced concrete road and drainage system in the front of Sethavidhya school Nongkae community, Hua Hin.

They also kept the track of the reinforced concrete road progress and the sewers at Soi Charoen Pattana I (Bonkai community), and ordered the construction company to fix the road fault before handing over such project to Hua Hin district.

Ministry Warns Against Eating Half-cooked Pork

The ministry of public health has warned people to refrain from eating halfcooked pork dishes such as spicy minced pork and spicy blood pork soup since those may be improperly and insufficiently cooked and could lead to the infection or sudden ‘hearing loss’ (also known as “Streptococcus suis”) or even death.

Streptococcus suis infection can be contracted in two ways. First, a person who has an open wound can easily be contracted when exposed to infected pork. Secondly, consuming half-cooked pork that still has

Hua Hin City Warns Against Fake Bill Collector The Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) warns Hua Hin residents both Thai and foreigners to beware of fraudsters showing up at people’s houses impersonating as bill collectors.

Thus, PEA advises people to always ask for employee’s ID card or documents from PEA before allowing them to check their home electric meter.

The only reference to Chocolate Day on the Internet is from E-card and calendar websites. This might lead you to conclude that this as a day for (and by) the E-card companies.

But, we know better. This day is for you, and all chocolate lovers. There are three objectives of Chocolate Cake Day: To bake a chocolate cake, decorate it and, of course… eat the chocolate cake.

Of course, if you are too busy to bake or decorate a cake, then just eating a chocolate cake will certainly do!

Majestic Creek Boxing Day Texas Scramble During the last 2 weeks of December many more players have been playing in Majestic Creek Weekly Competition. We have many interesting events coming up in January and February and on 26th December we held a “BOXING DAY TEXAS SCRAMBLE”, results shown below. For those of you who not about Boxing Day. The name comes from a time when the rich used to box up gifts to give to the poor. Boxing Day was traditionally a day off for servants and the day when they received a special Christmas Box from their Masters.

The Servants would also go home on Boxing Day to give Christmas Boxes to their Families.

Any Non member wishing to take part in our Weekly Competition can register to play with us. All you have to do is email to; mjccompetition @gmail.com by Tuesday evening of any week and your Tee Time will be sent to you on Wednesday morning. Sponsorship For Youth Football Tournaments in Hua Hin Spencers Property Services has signed up to sponsor ten youth football tournaments in Hua Hin. The deal will see ten competitions for children held over the course of the next 12 months.

The first ever SPS Mini League took place in June and featured ten Under 10 matches between five different local academies. So far there have been six of these tournaments featuring age groups from Under 10 up to Under 15.

Spener Wray, the General Manager of Spencers Property Services, said, “The atmosphere at these tournaments is always fun and friendly and it’s great to see local children getting the opportunity to play competitive football in this type of environment. 13 So You Really Want to Win at Texas Scramble?

Texas Scramble season has hit Hua Hin as one of the most fun team golf games to play.

Each team member plays a shot, and then it is up to the team to decide which shot is in the best position.

Once the best position is decided each player then plays their next shot from that position. You need to make sure the position is marked before the first player hits, and then each person drops their ball to play. This process is continued until one of the players holes out with the stroke score being recorded.

Texas Scramble is a common format for social golf events; including charity days. Many golfers would never admit they have serious winning ambitions, especially when the threat of sandbagged handicaps is considered.

However golfers also tend to have that ingrained competitive streak and deep down they would love to feature at the top end of the leader board. But to achieve that desire, a considered strategy comes into play to lower the odds. But few golfers give strategy any thought until it’s too late! Here are some tips for doing well in Texas Scramble.

There are important team roles to consider. The first is getting a long hitter off the tee and the next is putting. You’re also looking for someone with the ability to consistently hit the ball on the fairway. He or she doesn’t have to be long, only accurate. This frees up your power hitter. If it gets to the power hitter and nobody is on the fairway, they can’t exactly free wheel it.

An important team member may be a lady or senior player. Driving from the forward tees can be a huge advantage. Finally in an ideal world at least one team member needs to be a really strong iron player; just getting it somewhere on the green isn’t going to cut it.

Appointing a team captain is always a good idea but choose carefully. A captain should be able to nurture the team spirit; be convivial but decisive (not dictatorial) and with one eye on the shot clock to avoid slow play.

Always mark those short putts!

No matter how short the final putt is to finish the hole, make sure you mark it. You do not want to be the one who costs your team the trophy because you missed a two foot putt and didn’t mark it! Remember if you do not mark the place of your ball before you play it, then your playing partners miss their turns once the ball has been hit.

Play Aggressively

Let the first member of the group lay up and get his shot safe, then the other players can really go for it. With one ball in play on a par 5 rather than laying up, get out the 3 woods and give it a wack. You need to get birdies to win so you might as well have a go at it!

Order of Play

Choosing the right playing order is extremely important; your “A” player may not best at all phases of the game so set up the playing order with that in mind.

The Most Accurate Player Tees Off First

In Texas Scramble there is usually a minimum number of tee shots needed from each player. It puts less pressure on the high handicap players if you let them tee off early but after the most accurate player.

They seem to take a much more relaxed swing at the ball as they know that if it’s a bad shot there are still low handicap players to come who’ll probably save the day. If the low handicap players all go first and hit bad shots, the pressure on higher handicapped players builds.

Making Up the Team

A team that is mostly made up with lower handicap players is often the winner. The handicap allowance that a team gets isn’t very much. A low handicap team is quite likely to have a birdie opportunity at every hole as they have better prospects of hitting fairways and greens in regulation. If you have the choice, always go for a team with lower handicap players.

Always go with the least difficult shot that the majority of the team members are comfortable with. You may give up thirty yards because no one was comfortable with a downhill lie. The same is true for putting. A fifteen or twenty footer slightly uphill with only a little break may be a lot easier than an eight or ten footer downhill with three feet of break.

Remind the team to always be aggressive. Your best chance of making the putt is if everybody gets it to the hole.

Let the best putter putt last

It’s quite likely that low handicap players are better putters, but not always. By letting the less skilled golfers putt first you are giving the better putters more information about the line and pace.

Get Those Mandatory Drives Out Of The Way.

Sure his/her drive was 40 yards shorter than everyone else’s, but, if you can advance it, play it. Nothing kills a good scramble score than having to use the high handicapper’s drives on the last two holes.

The Tour’s Not Calling

Texas Scramble is often the only tournament that the weekend warrior will play with any frequency. Resist the urge to take yourself or the event too seriously and remember your handicap cannot be adjusted after playing this format. Even if you are in a competitive frame of mind, it’s meant to be fun so loosen up; especially if the aim is to support a charity.

Remember that drinks are likely to be flowing around the course and especially at the 19th Hole!

Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee Earns Full Exempt Status on PGA Tour Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee shot a brilliant final round 9-under 62 to earn full exempt status for the 2020 PGA Tour Champions after he finished second in the Qualifying Tournament Final Stage.

The three-time Asian Tour No. 1 and eight-time European Tour winner entered the last day outside the top-five which rewards players with full playing rights on the Champions and Thongchai, the first Thai player to play in the Presidents Cup in 2015, made the biggest final-round jump as he improved from T11 overnight to second with a 16-under total.

He carded five birdies and two eagles on the ninth and 17th holes in his final 18 holes. He had carded earlier scores of 67, 71 and 68.

Shane Bertsch made a six-foot par putt on the 18th hole to complete

a final-round 65 and pip Thongchai by one stroke with a 17-under total. Apart from Bertsch and Thongchai, the next three players on the leader board are Sweden’s Robert Karlsson, Robin Byrd and Australia’s Stephen Leaney.

Thongchai, the leading career money earner on the Asian Tour, won First Stage in California by three shots with a four-day score of 13-under. He turned in rounds of 61-73-71-66, making eight birdies and an eagle to turn in the opening round 61.

He has been a staple on the Asian Tour for a long time, collecting 13 wins, second most all-time behind countryman Thaworn Wiratchant. He also has eight career wins on the European Tour. The Thai legend turned 50 in November.

14 Entering the Great Property Debate: To Buy or Rent?

After many enjoyable holidays in Thailand and exploring the countryside many foreigners come to the conclusion that they want to establish a new ‘home base’ abroad at their favourite location. That’s Thailand and Hua Hin for many of us!

A suitable home is not hard to find.

After all Hua Hin offers so many choices from high rise condos to luxurious pool villas to more modest townhouses or perhaps a rural location with a house and land. There are also ‘gated’ communities, village settings or golf course apartments. The choices are almost unlimited.

But perhaps the most important first step in finding your new ‘home away from home’ is to answer a fundamental question; are you going to rent or buy?

That decision has both financial and lifestyle implications. For some the financial or investment factors are primary, others are guided more by emotional choices.

The internet provides many lengthy debates on the pros and cons of renting vs purchasing. However the advice offered varies as different countries have different property markets, financial rules and regulations as well as different safeguards for both purchasers and tenants.

Pros of Renting

More flexibility: When renting a home you can more easily pack up and move when you’re faced with sudden changes; including health issues.

Live in a better area: When renting you may be able to afford to live in a better area or complex than you would if you were purchasing a home.

Lower monthly payments: The payment you make towards your rent would likely be lower than paying off a home loan, leaving you more spending money each month.

The only insurance required by a tenant will be to cover the contents of the home, while all maintenance work on the property is for the homeowner’s account, as is the building insurance.

More disposable money in the short term.

Cons of Renting

You cannot make many changes: The changes you can make to a rental; property tend to more here than in many other countries, depending on the whims of the owner. Don’t expect any reimbursement for improvements made.

No return on investment

Homeownership rates vary country by country based on economic, political and historical circumstance. It may come as a surprise that Romania is rated as the country with the highest percentage of home ownership (around 96%) as people consider renting to be a short-term solution and the rental housing market is not well developed or regulated.

Countries such as South Korea (56%), Austria (48%), Germany (49%) and Hong Kong (50%) have relatively low rates.

Switzerland, with an ownership rate of 37%, is amongst the lowest and Thailand is somewhere in between at 80%. (Ref: snbchf. com – 2017)

The point is that it may be hard to leave behind well entrenched expectations and experiences from your country of origin when considering the choices that Thailand offers.

Of course it’s not just a black and white decision. Other options relate to renting or leasing with a purchasing option, purchasing the property but not the land and lifetime leasing options. These may be just a few of the options that a reputable and experienced property agent must be able to discuss to your satisfaction.

Looking at a typical Thailand home maker who is likely to be retired and may not be here for the full year; here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of renting Vs. buying a property in Thailand:

If there is a change in ownership or the owner simply decides they don’t want to give you the option to renew your lease, you’re left looking for a new place to live.

When renting a property, you have no control over rental fluctuations.

There is no guarantee that a lease will be renewed when it expires.

Pros of Buying

Value appreciation: Over time the value of your home should increase, depending on the wisdom of your investment. When you finally decide to sell your home you expect a growth in personal wealth.

Control over the property: Whatever you want to do with your home (legally), you can do it! Change the décor the way you’d like it, purchase the appliances you prefer without having to gain approval.

Large financial responsibility: Even though the cost of purchasing in Thailand is far lower than many other countries, it is still an investment that you must be prepared to pay for.

16 Thai Woman Winemaker Gaining Renown Throughout France working with Cabidos, which was purchased by the Alday family a year later. At Château Cabidos, Sakorn-Seriés mastered the Petit Manseng grape. She considers it noble for sweet and dry wines, and appreciates its hardy character within a fickle and wet subalpine climate. The grape is thick skinned, not susceptible to rot, and thrives on clay soils at high densities (5,500 and 6,500 vines/hectare or more) that provide small yields with concentrated flavors.

The Hachette Wine Guide, or ‘Guide Hachette Des Vins 2020,’ is a hefty tome—almost two and a half inches (six centimeters) thick—and includes 1,403 pages that list descriptions of more than 10,000 wines. It also includes three pages listing 21 ‘winemakers of the year’ from different regions of France.

This year’s awardee from the ‘southwest region’—which includes Jurançon, Irouléguy, Gaillac, Cahors and Bergerac— is an energetic Thai woman named Méo Sakorn-Seriès.

She is also featured in this month’s edition of the French magazine La Revue Du Vin De France.

There, her story shines out amongst articles about biodynamic techniques, new U.S. wine taxes and vintage loving NBA basketball players.

In 1997 Méo Sakorn-Seriès and her French husband moved from Thailand to France. She was rapidly impressed at how wine is such a powerful symbol of France, and decided to learn more. After studying viticulture she interned at Château Gazin Rocquencourt and Château Pape Clément, then worked with a wine cooperative in Génissac. In 2006 Sakorn-Seriès was introduced to Château Cabidos below the Pyrenees peaks in southern France. She soon began

TAT joins forces with THAI to promote 60th anniversary promotions

Two of Thailand’s key hospitality and tourism industry drivers are gearing up to mark their 60th anniversaries in 2020.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is joining forces with Thai Airways International (THAI) to mark their 60th anniversaries in 2020 with a range of tourism promotions aimed at strengthening the kingdom’s positioning as a preferred tourist destination whilst promoting responsible tourism, in line with the global sustainable development goals.

M r. Yu t h a s a k S u p a s o r n , TAT Governor, said, “TAT is delighted to form another collaboration with THAI to celebrate our 60th anniversaries together. Indeed, we share similar goals in attracting international travellers to Thailand for memorable Thai travel experiences and promoting domestic tourism to stimulate the local economy.”

In 2020, TAT aims to maintain Thailand’s position among the world’s top 6 in terms of global tourism revenue. The country’s overall tourism revenue is expected to increase by

10%, or about 3.71 trillion Baht, comprising 2.431 trillion Baht from international tourism and 1.28 trillion Baht from domestic tourism.

18 Thailand’s Premier Coastal Bird Watching Site; the Petchaburi Wetlands

Laem Pak Bia and Pak Thale is a large area of salt pans, mudflats and mangrove remnants in Petchaburi Province. This is without doubt the premier bird watching site for shorebirds in Thailand, with large numbers of birds and many rare species appearing annually.

The stretch from Hat Chao Samran to Pak Thale consists of a variety of salt pans, scrub and mangroves. Stopping anywhere to scan the surrounds will reveal birdlife. A maze of roads inland can be explored with additional habitats which include rice fields, fresh water canals and sedge filled pools.

This region is very open and exposed which allows for good bird viewing conditions. In addition to a sand spit, mudflats and salt pans there are many ditches, brine shrimp pools as well as smaller areas of freshwater wetlands and scrubland meaning that a very wide variety of species can be found here. The site has far more than just shorebird watching to offer.

In the dry season, between late September and April large numbers of waders, gulls and terns escape the northern winter by coming here. The critically endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper is by far the most sought-after by bird watchers and is regularly seen on the salt farms at Pak Thale between late October and late March. Nordmann’s Greenshank is also an annual winter visitor as well as large numbers of Great Knot and small groups of Asian Dowitchers.

These globally endangered/threatened species are just a few of the exciting birds to be found. Other highlights are the small population of resident Malaysian Plovers on Laem Pak Bia sandspit along with the Chinese Egret and White-faced Plover, although wintering large gulls have become scarce in recent years probably due to increased human disturbances.

This area is of international importance for migratory shorebirds. It is part of the Pak Thale – Laem Phak Bia Flyway Site, recognised as a priority site on the East AsianAustralasian Flyway as a regular wintering site and migration passage of several globally threatened species.

The area is recognised by BirdLife International as the most important area in Thailand for coastal shorebirds in terms of abundance and diversity. The area of the Pak Thale site is about (300 rai) 50 ha and hosts over 7,000 water

birds during the northern hemisphere winter, comprising 50 species, including several globally threatened migratory birds.

Aside from coastal mudflats and remnants of mangrove forest, the land is largely given over to human productive uses and dominated by salt pans. The salt pans also play an important ecological role in that with the loss of natural habitat, the less saline pans are used by shorebirds for roosting and feeding during high tide. Aquaculture is the other major livelihood activity in the area and shellfish collection takes place on the coastal mudflats.

The biodiversity of the site and local traditions have been threatened by gradual land conversion, especially to intensive aquaculture. This is a trend occurring throughout the Inner Gulf of Thailand, alongside urban development as another source of land use change.

Conversion to aquaculture is mainly driven by shortterm profits and low aquaculture labour requirements with additional benefits from the sale of extracted soil from creating ponds. A recent slump in salt prices is further encouraging land use change. Most land at Pak Thale is owned by a few major landowners, not the salt farmers. Locally, there is another risk of pollution from local industries, which may damage aquaculture and salt pans. A low, but significant, level of netting of birds is also a threat.

Habitat at Pak Thale is protected and recognised for its international importance for shorebirds and as a tourism destination aiming to achieve a sustainable co-existence between nature and local livelihoods.

ABOUT THE SPOON-BILLED SANDPIPER The Spoon-billed Sandpiper (Calidris pygmaea)is the most threatened shorebird on the flyway, with perhaps as few as 200 breeding pairs remaining, having undergone a dramatic decline during the past two decades, partly as a result of loss of habitat. Spoon-billed Sandpipers sightings have been recorded in the Inner Gulf of Thailand each year with Pak Thale-Laem Phak Bia having the highest annual number.

Bird watchers may be surprised to find that this species’ defining feature, its bill shape, is not always obvious in the field until viewed head on. However, it is reasonably easy to pick out of a flock of other birds due to its surprisingly white appearance (in winter) making it possible to locate with just binoculars at fairly long range; although such a bird needs to be viewed through a telescope to fully appreciate.

With the isolated location of its breeding grounds in northeast Russia, Thailand, along with Saemangeum in South Korea, offers birdwatchers the best chance of finding a Spoon-billed Sandpiper.

The species has also been observed at Khao Sam Roi Yot and other salt pans in Samut Songkram province, indicating that it could be found in a number of other locations in the Gulf of Thailand, or perhaps other parts of the country.

The Inner Gulf of Thailand is a must for anyone wishing to see this bird as a highlight on many birdwatchers’ trips to Thailand.

TRAVEL: By road from Hua Hin visitors to the area may drive on the main highway to Bangkok then turn towards the coast from Phetchaburi City. Alternatively a scenic route can be followed north from Cha-Am past Puek Tian Beach before reaching Had Chao Samran as the southern gateway to the area. Had Chao Samran is around 60 kilometres from Hua Hin. The Bird Conservation Society of Thailand (BCST) is one of the oldest organisations conserving birds and nature in Thailand as the partner of BirdLife International. According to the report, Thailand and South Korea were among the best-performing countries in Asia Researchers from Johns Hopkins University have ranked Thailand sixth among a total of 195 countries for the world’s strongest health security.

Thailand is also Asia’s No. 1 and the only developing country on the world’s Top 10 list.

South Korea is the only other Asian country to reach the top 10 with Thailand.

Thailand scored 73.2 out of 100 points, despite being the only top 10 country to be in the upper middle income range.

Thailand has been recognized as having the highest level of preparedness to cope with epidemics among 13 countries.

The conference focused on the strategic role of a working committee in the steering of the world’s health security between 2019 and 2024. The meeting resolved to have Thailand host the ministerial-level Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) in 2020 and to chair a working committee on the steering of GHSA in 2021. GHSA has operated since 2014, to upgrade measures for alert responses to epidemics, and currently consists of 60 member countries.

How to Get Around Hua Hin There are many choices of transportation for getting around Hua Hin, and we cover them all in our map. If you stay near the centre it’s possible to walk to most places.

If you stay a bit further from the town centre, you may want to choose from the various public transportation options available including songthaews, tuk tuks, motorcycle taxis, tricycles, bicycles or minivans. You can check them all here in our Hua Hin Today Map for your guide.

These are more reasonably priced, starting at 20 Baht per person. From the train station to the night market costs 30 Baht, as does a trip from the night market to the beach. You’ll see motorcycle taxis on many street corners, with the drivers wearing mainly orange or orange jackets with numbers at the back and front. Negotiate the price beforehand.

Motorcycle Rental

A tuk tuk is rather an expensive means of transportation in Hua Hin. For a very short journey of 1 km we were charged 100 Baht, which the driver claimed is the minimum fare; but it’s a fun ride at a reasonable price if you travel in groups of 4 – 6 people and share the fare. You will find tuk tuks parked all around the city. Most people used them when they needed to transport goods or luggage.

Tricycle

This is a 3-wheeled rickshaw. These tricycles travel much slower as the driver has to ‘pedal’ you around town, which is good if you want to travel in a slower pace and see the town’s surroundings more up-close and personal. Again, negotiate the price beforehand.

Please be aware that an approved driver’s license is required to avoid a financial penalty or perhaps to invalidate an insurance policy. It is also illegal for both the driver and passenger not to wear a helmet apart from safety issues. Many a visitor has been injured or worse after a motorcycle accident; be very wary and never drink and ride!

If you want more flexibility or want to travel to lots of places, you can rent a motorcycle for around 150-200 Baht per day. You’ll see rental shops around the city, or just ask your hotel staff.

Renting a motorcycle, gives you more freedom and you can travel longer distances.

A trip from Hua Hin to Cha Am (around 25 km away), will only cost you around 60 Baht worth of petrol.

The Cha-Am ATV Park

is situated on Bor Khaem Road of Km. 198 Phetchakasem Road, Tambon Cha-Am, (about 8 KM. from Cha-Am beach / 22 KM. from Hua-Hin market) covering a total area of 43 rai. Our park has received the Award of Outstanding Performance in the category of Recreation Tourist Sites at the Thailand Tourism Awards 2008 and 2010. It is a soft-adventure attraction with various activities available; including, ATV riding at different levels of difficulty, paintball games, gun shooting and archery.

Phra Ratchaniwet Mrigadayavan

With a breezy seaside location 12km north of Hua Hin, this summer palace – Phra Ratchaniwet Mrigadayavan – was built in 1924 during the reign of Rama VI. Set in a beautiful garden with statuesque trees and stunning sea views, it’s a series of 18 interlinked teak buildings with tall, shuttered windows and patterned fretwork built upon stilts.

The functional but elegant style of the palace was a result of Rama VI suffering from rheumatoid arthritis; the court’s Italian architect designed it to maximise air circulation and make the most of the seaside location. A renovation means there will be no interior access for many years (access may not resume even after the renovation is finished, but this is still uncertain), which is unfortunate, but it’s lovely on the outside too and still worth a visit. There’s also a nature trail here.

The palace is within the grounds of Camp Rama VI, a military base. It’s easiest to get here with private transport but you can also catch a Hua Hin–Cha-am bus and ask to be dropped off at the camp’s front gate. As this is a royal palace, legs and arms must be covered, otherwise you’ll have to pay 20B to wear a sarong.

Cicada Market- The Arts Market

A night market not to be missed is Cicada market in Kao Takiab Hua Hin. The Market is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday night only. The market has many unusual stalls selling items made locally, so you will find less mass-produced items in this contemporary art market.

The location is based in park with beautiful fairy lights dotting the trees and small stalls selling goods and food.

Most evenings there is musician and art performances in the Amphitheatre at the park. Also do not miss to detour to Tamarind Market that is just next door but with a heavier focus on food. Sirindhorn International Environmental Park

On the 13th of November 2000, HRH Princess Sirindhorn granted a royal permission to name the institute after herself as ‘The Sirindhorn International Environmental Park’. The park was then officially opened on July 19, 2008. This area was originally an abundant mangrove forest, full of various types of plants, trees and habitat of animals. However, the destruction of forests in the area was degraded to almost a devastated forest. Presently, mangrove forest areas in the park has an increasingly abundance of ecosystem both in trees and animals. They become habitats of various animals including migratory birds. They also become a natural center for studying the ecology and biodiversity of the mangroves forest and help raise awareness to the enormous benefits of mangroves forest which deserves preservation.

Pala U waterfall is located in the southern end of the massive Kaeng Krachan National Park - the largest National Park in Thailand. Established in 1981, Kaeng Krachan covers 2,915 square kilometres and straddles two Provinces – Petchaburi and Prachuab Khiri Khan. Seemingly for tourists and residents alike, the falls are located just 64 kilometres west of Hua Hin city.

Pala U waterfall is actually a series of waterfalls, or steps comprising of 15 levels, the trek becomes more arduous the higher one climbs. The first 3 stages are pretty manageable for most people, but beyond that the trail becomes much more challenging.

As one enters the Kaeng Krachan National Park near the falls, there are warnings of elephants in the vicinity, and for a good reason. The area surrounding the waterfalls has high levels of wild elephant activity.

It is easier to spot wild elephants along the road here than in the central parts of the park. In fact, elephants are seen on the roads every day. If you are not lucky enough to see an elephant, you are guaranteed to see piles of dung along the road.

Wat Huay Mongkol Hua Hin Wat Huay Mongkol Hua Hin--this Buddhist temple is home to the world’s largest statue of Luang Phor Thuad, a legendary southern Thai monk revered for his enlightenment and ability to perform miracles. Many believe that the amulets created in his image guarantee safety in times of distress. The statue, set within a park-like setting that attracts many visitors each weekend, was commissioned by HM Queen Sirikit and is the first thing you see when approaching Hua Hin from Highway 4 (heading to Prachuab Kirikhand).

Hua Hin’s Station Monsoon Valley Monsoon Valley was founded in 2001

by Chalerm Yoovidhya, a wine-loving entrepreneur with a vision to create a Thai wine culture. Upon returning from his studies abroad, Chalerm saw potential in growing grapes in his beloved native Thailand and set out to show the world that great wines can be crafted even at the 13th latitude of the northern hemisphere.

His first vineyard was at Tab Kwang, in beautiful Khao Yai, a region known as the ‘traditional’ grape-growing region of Thailand.

Surrounded by national parks and jungle, the choice for this area was perfect as the fertile red soil and convenient climate conditions created the best platform for making opulent and rich Shiraz. After initial success in Tab Kwang, he explored other areas of Thailand that would give birth to great wines.

Rajabhakti Park

Rajabhakti Park, located in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan province, is a historically themed park honouring past Thai seven kings from the Sukhothai period to the current royal house of Chakri. The seven kings made great contributions to the country in each period of Thai history.

They are King Ram Khamhaeng (reigned 1279-1298) of the Sukhothai period, King Naresuan (1590-1605) and King Narai (1656-1688) of the Ayutthaya period, King Taksin (17671782) of the Thonburi period, and King Rama I (1782-1809), King Mongkut (1851-1868), and King Chulalongkorn (18681910) of the Rattanakosin period. They were designed by Thailand’s Fine Arts Department. His Majesty the King (King Rama IX) granted royal permission for the Royal Thai Army to build this park. He also gave this historical park the name “Rajabhakti Park,” which means the park built with the people’s loyalty to the institution of the monarchy.

Rajabhakti Park is open to visitors every day, between 8:00 and 18.00 hours. No entrance free. You must follow cover your shoulders and knees – clothes are available to borrow.

Hua Hin’s popularity began to increase in the 1920’s as the railway line from Bangkok was constructed and King Rama VI built Klai Kangwon Palace as a summer retreat.

Hua Hin’s station is one of the oldest in Thailand and its main feature is The Royal Waiting Room that used to welcome King and his court when they were visiting the town. Originally, it was situated at Sanamchan Palace in Nakom Pathom and was known as Plub Pla Sanamchan. Eventually, the room was tranported to Hua Hin. It is designed in the same style as Maruekkhathayawan Palace and is an attraction not to be missed if you are staying in Hua Hin. The train station is located at the top (west end) of Damnoern Kasem Road.
